Solve : Transferring Hard Drive Data?

Answer»

I wish to transfer all the accumulated DATA on a hard drive from an older computer to my NEWER one. Can this be handled proficiently by someone who "knows what they're doing', . . or am I asking for trouble. Obviously I don't want to lose/destroy anything . . .and want everything in the same place (?). Is this an operation that generally ' can be done / goes smoothly ' ?
I have about 25 G's of info to transfer ( from pics to Outlook Express files) to the newer 160G HD. What should I pay to have this done. ? Again, am I asking for trouble ? Thx. B.Applications will need to be REINSTALLED, and the operating system can not be transferred in this fashion successfully. Data files can be done in a variety of ways and without problem. Outlook Express has it's own methods.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q270670Please give me some examples of "Applications". Don't need to transfer the Operating System. Went to the LINK provided, but mostly Over My HEAD. Are you saying Outlook Express can be transferred, but in a different fashion, by someone adept at following specific Microsoft procedures ??Quote

Applications are ANY programs. They need to be run from the install program so they can scatter the files in the appropriate place (Windows subfolder, etc.) and ake the appropriate registry entries. That is why you can't just copy the the folder within Program Files.

Outlook Express has Address books (.wab files) and the actual e-mail folders and these need to be done in a certain manner. Besides the above link read here:

Solve : Dell laptop will not complete start-up?

Answer»

My Dell laptop will not boot. It begins as normal but about 3/4 of the way through the start-up process, it shuts back down. I heard that it could be a fan problem, has anyone heard of this before or had this type of problem? It could be a lot of things but none of them good. Is it still under warranty? If so, call them at once. How about some details on the machine, it's age, and what preceeded this? Will get info on the machine tonight, it is at HOME. Nothing preceeded this it was working fine until I tried ONE day and nothing but partial start and then shut down. It seems to make it to the same point EVERY time and I'm guessing about 3/4 of the way through the start process then everything just shuts down like I never hit start.
The reason I asked about the fan is because a friend of mine said he heard on a television forum today a person called in with the same problem and he was TOLD it was the fan. Hard to believe isnt it, no way it gets HOT that fast is there? Or does it look for a fan run status, I wouldnt think so?
It is not a new machine so no warranty.Laptops do heat up and there are fans in there. Unfortunately Dell has no way to monitor system temps in a laptop, but you can run Everest Home (if it will run) and find out all that and a lot more:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

If it won't run at all, you should probably take it to the shop to have it looked at. Laptops should not be monkeyed with by the inexperienced. If the fan IS out an Intel CPU will shut down to save itself. (Since that is a Dell it is an Intel chip!) There are other things that could cause this as well.can you tell so i can i that for my knowlegde...

thanks,

Solve : Using older printer "Star 4 Laser Jet"?

Answer»

I am trying to use older printer with my newer Dell Windows XP. I keep getting an alarm saying "call service 03" Does anyone know what this means. thanksI'm betting that printer is a rebranded HP. The alarm usually indicates that maintenance is required - a fuser UNIT needs replacement or whatever. Are you up to taking the printer apart and replacing components? If not, you probably need to get it looked at by a printer service engineer. But given that printers are so cheap nowadays, if the unit no longer prints, it might be as well just to replace it.Thanks, I have come to that opinion after working on it for hours. Thanks for your input. Frustrated in Kentucky.Speaking of that I went to get some ink cartridges for an older HP that certainly had a lot more life in it, but lacked eith a color or Black cartridge. My local Office Depot would sell me both for $62 + tax. Next to the cartridges were brand new HP's, with better resolution and the ink (full size cartridges) INCLUDED for $50. That says a lot about our society. I knew that most printer companies sold the low end ones for next to nothing just to get you hooked on the ink (The first one is always free!) but that was just ridiculous. At my office I have newer color printer, copier and scanner. It uses HP cartridges, and have to replace them very, very frequently. They cost in the $40's and $50's.

This old Star 4 laser printer was a lot cheaper to buy for. I have this one at home. My town does not have a store that refills ink cartridriges, but when I was in Colorada, my friend took her's by and had them refilled for only $18.

That I can affordI had two printers ruined by refilled ink cartridges. That was the only variable, so I'm sure about it. I avoid using them even though they are cheaper.I am a risk taker and I would use the refill method and hope for the BEST. Just don't have a store here. I bought some off of EBAY and the color cartridrige was bad. So I guess that is not a good idea either. You have any other suggestions to buy cartridges cheaper. If only we all had plenty of money!!!!!

Solve : Two different OS?

Answer»

I have Win 2000 installed on my 2 hard drives. I would like to install Win ME on my D drive. How do I do this?

Thanks
JohnWith Windows its always best to install the Older OS First,

Install ME onto Partition 2 "D:\", Standard Windows Install

Then Install 2000 on partition 1 "C:\" Also a standard Install

Windows 200 will take care of setting up the boot loader to handle both OS's if you install ME second , its going to be messy

Also try not installing ME ever and you will be forever happy Quote

I would like to install Win ME on my D drive.
Please pick up the sharpest object on your desk and shove it firmly into your left eye. It'll be less painful than living with ME!For best results the oldest Windows OS should be installed first. 98 and ME insist on being on the first partition of the first hard drive to WORK correctly. well, the millinium bug didnt happen, but we did end up with windows ME (wait, ME is the bug of the millenium..)In terms of where it should be installed, it is no different that Windows 95 or 98 or DOS of any variety for that matter. As I said, many people had NO problems with ME. It had a lot of shortcomings, but it was the beginning of one of the things many of you use a lot - System Restore, and if tweaked right and not abused it WORKED OK. If you want to talk a bizarre and worthless product you folks under 16 might want to research Microsoft Bob.If you can run 2000 then you should be able to run xp, ME = Mistake edition, It is a good os but had a lot of problems and could be quite unstable, Great for an I.T guy though!, You get to check and fix the faults!

Also you could run a stripped down version of xp which would be similar to ME but better.Quote

B) Because they could make more money

C) They were trying to APPEAL to the absolute newbies that were wanting to get their own PC, but knew nothing about how to operate them

D) All of the above

The correct answer is D of course. It didn't sell well, but I got the same reaction when I saw XP for the first time as when I saw BOB. I want Bob!!

Solve : electrical problems?

Answer»

hey dead_reckon. here are a couple SOLUTIONS and pointers. the air conditioner is whats causing the overload.

Solutions

-place the air conditioner on a seperate circuit.
-run a new home-run to the plug being used by the air conditioner so that the plug is on its own dedicated circuit. (recommended to be done professionally)

Pointers

-don't touch the electrical panel, ur suggestions are liable to burn down the house.
-as what dl65 said, double pole breakers are MEANT for 230V while single pole breakers are meant for 120V. if u would like to make ur bedroom circuit 230V, say goodbye to most of ur electronics. Quote

i have wired many things for my self
I think the point you may be missing is that there's a big difference between wiring a component and wiring a house. The bits of dl65's posts that you didn't understand or which were news to you should tell you that.

There is no shame in admitting the limits of your knowledge. People train to be domestic/industrial electricians for years. You aren't there yet, nor does anyone expect you to be. You do not know the regulations, and you do not have access to the (very expensive) TESTING equipment that electricians use. The regulations and equipment exist for people's safety. This is not an area in which people should compromise, cut corners or do things on the cheap. That is how people get killed.

When you're dead, you don't get the opportunity to say, "or maybe it should be a FIFTEEN amp fuse in that circuit..."If your dads a certified electrician then surely he'd know what to do?

Don't UPGRADE the breaker, I'd add another ring like somebody else said.Quote

Solve : multi photo resizing?

Answer»

Can you resize multiple photos at once, without having to do it to each one individually? Or does any one know of a program that will do it?(preferably freeware )

Thanks,

ViperI think Irfanview might be able to do this? Do you have any programming knowledge? If so you could write a script to do this USING ImageMagick. I think also that The Gimp can be scripted to do such things. If you USE The Gimp (free) you could then google for a module that does batch resizing.I'm not the best programmer in the world, But I am GOING to take two programming classes next year (hopefuly anyway) but for now, I'll look into the pre-made programs. To the Bat Mobile Google!

Thanks,

Viper

P.s. you'll be seeing me in the programming board in the comming futrue Okay, I put a bit more effort into your problem. I'd forgotten that amongst the >XP Powertoys<, there is a batch image resizer. Picassa can also do this (follow the software link in my sig for that one).I have a Fujifilm digital camera. The software that came with it, FinePix Viewer, will do batch resizing. I really was not aware of it until I read your post and then decided to see whether I have any software that has that capability. It was a pleasant surprise to learn this. When I select multiple photos and start the menu SEQUENCE to resize, FinePix Viewer asks me whether I want to modify the original or save to another folder.

Solve : Windows ME problem?

Answer»

Glad you are all fixed up and thanks for posting back. Just think how much easier this will be for you next time. Just come here and ask??? LOL No that Windows ME was alike ENOUGH to the Windows 98 but from what I read doesn't use DOS. The F1 key was the trick so I could actually get there. Hopefully there won't be a next time...

But a new question on an even older laptop IBM that has been not in use for a couple of years...

When I start it it asks for a PASSWORD??? It has Windows 95 on it and I believe it doesn't get past DOS. Is that one toast or can I bring it around???It depends if it is a BIOS password or a Windows password. A WIndows password can usually be avoided by pressingEscape.

A BIOS password is much different and more secure on a laptop than in a desktop. If that is the case, the only REAL cure is a motherboard replacement. Not cost effective at all, even if you can find one. If that is the case, there is no hope realistically. A desktop is east to get around, not so a laptop.

Let me know which it is. Pressing the F1 key at boot should let you know soon enough.I am afraid it must be a goner then. There is a little picture of what appears to be a disc with a padlock after it. You have 3 times to try and after the 3rd time control alt del doesn't even work. Oh well, thanks again for the help. Have a great rest of the weekend.Yep, sorry but those things are meant to be secure.Quote

you must like optimizing images...Well, when you THINK about the hundreds or thousands of times a day some of these avatars are transmitted to someone's web browser, why waste the bandwidth? Why take an image like this one, which is actual image being used by ROSS, to display a tiny avatar?

It really doesn't require special web graphics optimizing software, although that can result in the best optimized graphics for web use. MS Paint or any photo editing software can be used to simply resize the image to the actual size needed for the avatar. Merely resizing greatly reduces the size of the underlying file. It's that simple.ah, im too lazy to care enough to fix EM... lolIts truly amazing.
One picture could have originally been 3-40MB, but sick PhotoShop or Fireworks on it and it will be 18.2KBQuote
Its truly amazing.
One picture could have originally been 3-40MB, but sick PhotoShop or Fireworks on it and it will be 18.2KB

or paint, lolSome forums have limits on the dimensions and file size of avatars. It really can be a money issue, since web host services generally price their hosting plans based on hard drive space allowed on the server and the amount of data transfer. Data transfer refers to the volume of data that must be transmitted from web server to web visitors computer; of course, it includes all images included the web files comprising what the website visitor sees on their computer.

Graphics optimization is kind of a balancing act, or striking a balance between image quality and file size. Now, I'm not advocating that EVERYONE go buy Optimizing Web Graphics software, which is specifically designed to optimize images for web use.

Again, merely resizing an image to the actual size of the avatar or intended signature block image instead of taking a larger image and forcing the web browser to reduce the size is major step in avoiding bloated graphics. Also, digital photos straight from the camera can be huge files. The comment, "One picture could have originally been 3-40MB, but sick PhotoShop or Fireworks on it and it will be 18.2KB" was right on point.

R0SSOops! I figured you had moved it somewhere else for hosting. I put it back in photobucket but please do copy it to wherever your former avatar image was being hosted or another roosting place.

Photobucket probably has a limit on data traffic. So, if I get too many images out there that are actively being used, I may exceed the limit.

Solve : computer stuck in standby mode?

Answer»

Hi everyone. Ihave a computer stuck in standby mode and have had absolutely no success with bringing it out of this mode. I have tried everything that I have learned and ASKED several computer techs about this with no solution. Basically, it started with the cleaning of the key board and the sleep, power and wake keys being pressed almost at the same time and the screen indicating that the computer was going into standby mode. Thats been it from there onwards.
No matter what I have tried the computer will not reboot. On power up I have the fans, both the CD player and burner with power. I can open the trays and place a cd into them and it seems the drives are trying to access the disk but that's it. I think it might be in the Bios from what I have gleaned off the internet from a couple of sites, but I can not even get to that at the moment. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated at this point. Thanks.

You probably leave the computer in standby all the time, don't you?
Over night, when you leave, during the day when its not being used....
It may be that you use standby too often.

Anyways, I had the same problem for a while. Then, my computer got a virus, forcing my to loose all my data, reformat, and reinstall EVERYTHING. Amazingly, that fixed it all. Try disabling Virus Scanner, or other software that is running at the time.

Solve : Checkin' out a 'new to me' computer.?

OK. I just bought a 'new to me' home built computer, about 2 yrs old.

CPU: Intel Pent 4 HT 3200 Mhz (16 X 200)

Mobo: Abit IC&-MAX3 ( on Crucial this runs at PC2700 & PC3200 with 4 Gig MAX Mb.

System Mem: 1536Mb. of PC3200 DDR SDRAM (400 Mhtz ?)

I've Downloaded EVEREST. to check a few things out. It says:

Under FSB Properties: Real Clock is 200Mhz Effective Clock is 800Mhz.
Under Memory Bus Properties: Real Clock 200Mhz Effective Clock 400Mhz.

Under Bus TYPE it says : Dual DDR SDRAM (NOT DDR2) ??

I just wanted an opinion as to whether all these NUMBERS seemed Normal. Since I was taking what I bought at face value, is there any other specs on Everest that are critical for me to look at. ? The machine is much more than I need , I'm not a gamer, I just thought it was a good deal for the price and would have some resale value later on.

So, if your computer offers you more than you need, why do you worry about those numbers? It's important for you to be happy with your computer. Numbers don't make me happy, for me it's important to see the problem solved at the right price. Have you pay too much?
My "2 cents" questions: usb ports work? Do you observe any glitch? The computer is noisy? Something you don't like and you want to change?
I don't 'worry' about the numbers, but I would like to know for sure that I GOT what I paid for. . . . and to know exactly what I have for eventual resale. It is very quiet, everything works fine, even both monitors are acting like they should. There is one thing I need to do if you are so inclined. I want to make Yahoo Mail my default mail browser. The instructions on-line from Yahoo simply do not work. They have a DOWNLOAD that doesn't DL.... and from previous experience, they don't repond to e-mails for at least a week. If you can be of help . . . .Thx.How much you paid is irrelevant if it runs well and serves your needs...as far as resale PC's are kinda like cars in that they drop in value by about 40% as soon as you drive them off the lot.

Be happy with your new machine i'm sure it'll treat you right if you treat it right.

As far as the Yahoo issue which browser are you running ? ?

Solve : MS Virtual PC now Free?

Answer»

I am not a big MS fan, but they are offering their Virtual PC 2004 software for free. Might be fun for an experiment.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtualpc/default.mspx

Here is what it works with:

http://vpc.visualwin.com/Whats a Virtual PC, i am going to look at it and find out but Still Huh?!

Too The Google Mobile!! And Away!!

I found Out...

If it works it Pretty Sweet , it lets you Run all your Old OS's on top of Windows, so where a lot of People are using Thing like DOS box to emulate Dos,(not all that well tho) now you can just Run Real MS-DOS on top of windows, id SAY that would work better than Dos Box, ... I'm going to have to give this a Go

now where did i put that Win95-A disk, It has to Be Version A *censored* IT!!I look Trough That LIST , there are a lot more Yes's than no's , one thing tho , the NO next to MAC OS says Because macs are not I386's they wont work... That has Changed Right?I don't know how up to date that is. The switch to x86 architecture was fairly RECENT.

ok, topic being death of a sony VAIO, so, cut the VAIOS power cord, wire the box to it, then turn it on witht the switch on 115, and watch the sparks fly And that's a plan?plan? who needs a plan? but, if you want one, you can always DEVISE a way to "stratigically" destroy the computer with a sledge hammer We're taking the parts to a computer PART recycling shop, EXCEPT for the hard drive, which I'm keeping. )Quote

if you can get money off of them, go for itProper disposal is even better than a few pennies. not really, a few pennies earned now, means more later...But improper disposal can be hazardous. That's more important. i just drop them in the trash can and forget about it, the trash man doesnt notice, they have the arm things on the side of the truck that they pick them up with, they dont notice (until they compact it)Well, that's one definition of being a responsible citizen.

No need to touch my avvy. It's only 8.44 KB, not too bad a stress on PC's.
That's true. And, you downsized the file to the actual dimensions of your avatar before inserting it in the forum. That's the best technique.

Anyway, I grabbed your avatar and ran it through my sofware to see whether resulting file size WOULD be significantly different. It is significantly smaller, at only 2,556 bytes. Here it is if you want it:

Well, the reason I downsized it was for two reasons. One, like you said, it's good to shrink it to actual size. The other was the fact that when I first used my colored avatar, it was just a tad over the limit, and Dilbert's glasses got "squished" in the process of the YaBB code making it look a uniform size. (It's still just a tiny bit squished, but it looks fine in my profile. Go figure.)

I've downloaded the avatar and re-uploaded it to Imageshack. You can remove the Photobucket one if you want.

Funny thing happened. I tried to save it as a PNG (because, after all, my PNGs tend to be much smaller than JPGs -- exponentially, in fact) to reduce the file size further, but that made it go back to almost 9 KB. Weird. So I'll keep the JPG as my avatar. speaking of frozen dogs; when our dog died in 96 i think it was, it was the middle of winter, we couldnt bury him, so, my dad got a couple large clear trash bags, and stuck him in the freezer, that spring, we buried him... we have quite a pet cemetary FORMING at my house... a dog (blacky), 3 gold fish, a parikeet (ozzy), a lizard, a cat (dutchess), one of dutchess's kittens... i think thats all, not sure though...did u bury them in an old haunted indain burial ground?? :-? i hope not cuz ull be sorry..... booQuote

Based on some experimenting, I find PNG files to be much larger than JPG. Perhaps it depends on the file you start with. My NetGraphics Optimizer software only saves files in either GIF or JPG format. If I copy a JPG file into Paint and start to save it as GIF, Paint usually shows a warning that "Saving in this format may cause loss of color informatiion" and, indeed, it usually does. So, JPG seems to be the best format in most cases.Quote
(because, after all, my PNGs tend to be much smaller than JPGs -- exponentially, in fact)
There might be a slight misconception here. The PNG format uses a lossless compression method called "DEFLATE". JPEGs use a lossy compression method which, particularly with large complex images such as photos, can produce much better compression ratios (but with a loss of data that is not always detectable by the human eye). JPEG compression is variable - that is you have a trade-off between quality of results and file size. If you are finding that your JPEGs tend to come out larger than your PNGs, then there are two possibilities - either you're working on an image that doesn't really lend itself to JPEG compression (such as simple cartoons...) or your JPEG compression settings are turned up too high. Aim for a setting of around 15, using standard rather than progressive encoding.

Solve : Daughter changed default ISP - Lost All Emails?

Answer»

We have both Netscape and Internet Explorer on our computer. Netscape is normally the default and that is where my husband accesses his fuse.net email. My daughter prefers to work on Internet Explorer. She changes the default frequently. This usually does not cause a problem, however this time my husband lost all email that was saved. Is there anyway to retrieve the lost emails? I'm Sorry but i have no idea what you mean.

The Browser you use on the Internet has no bearing on your Emails

How do you check your Emails?..

Do you use the Email Client that Comes with Netscape?

Or is it a Website you visit to See them? This is where my lack of knowledge of the actual workings of the internet/computer etc.. Unfortunately, I don't know the terminology well. I will describe our situation.

We have Fuse.net for our email. I believe it is also through Outlook. We do not use the outlook icon on the desktop to access our email at home as I do at work. We would log on to Netscape and click the ENVELOPE icon at the bottom of the screen and it would take us to our outlook/fuse (whatever) email.

My husband usually loads all that INFORMATION and he UNDERSTANDS the workings, but refuses to ask for help anywhere. I think the fuse.net is the actual server we access when we log on, would the emails also be on their server? I know at work we use roadrunner and our email comes through an outside group and is saved on their server.

I am trying to get a hold of him to get specifics and to give him this web address so he can carry on the conversation (if he will). Please forgive me for being so dumb in this area.ok , so from what you just Said,

I don't Think you Use Web based MAIL. you might be able to tho.

You use outlook in the Office , dose this still work?
You use The Netscape Mail Client at home.

When you Try to Check you Mail from Netscape what happens?
does it not open?
or does it open and show you your old mail but no new mail?
or dose it open and its empty?

You may try going on to the fuse.net webpage and look for a check mail area, (their is one i just looked) this should work for now.
They might still have your mail if outlook and Netscape don't DELETE on Retrieval

The info you need to Set it all up again is

the Pop3 Server
the SMTP Server
Your Username
And Your Password

And any port settings that might be nonstandard

We open the mail and it is empty after we reset Netscape as a default.

Its not bad for the computer, but its not always good for you.
Its not a good idea to spend 24/7 in front of the computer.
(like I do)
And there's always the mental effect on your brain.

Just remember:
Your parents own the house you LIVE in
they pay the electrical bill
and they probably own your computer.
So if they say no, its probably unfair and time to get your own computer!
(GAME ON !As for some of the tearys on video games increseing violence , some studys show it actualy acts as an out let for violence and is not in FACT the instagator.
Its a prety gray area

As for the social elements , i my self game too much and have no social life , but im pretty sure i wouldent have had one anyway. im not buildt for being accepted in the norms....

Also i was a very voilent child, i beet up .. people before i ever had a computer or a tv for that matter.. we were poor

"Again im sorry iv no spell checker " im on my Mam's Brand new XPS ... im not sure why she has an XPS but mehYes! Exactly!
People need to maintain a good mental health, good physical health, and good social health.
If you remove and of the listed above, you would no longer be a fully functioning person, and you would probably fall into a state of depression, or worse.

Game on all you want, just be sure to go and talk to your friends and family, maintain relationships, and keep healthy.

(Make a deal with your parents: If you eat healthy, and be sure to keep friends, and do your daily chores, and get OUTSIDE once in a while, then you can continue to play all the games you want. )reita...... Some answers for you .

Is gaming bad for the computer?
No ..... however some games utilize all of the CPUs capacity and will create additional heat to be generated .

Quote
Will gaming spoil a computer
perhaps you should define gaming , in the context you are refering to.

Quote
Why do parents always think that playing of games will spoil a computer
Perhaps , it's not the computer your parents are concerned about , but rather you .
On the other hand , some of the gamming download sites seem to be riddled with nasties , which could potentially do damage to the machine.

Hello,
My computer does not have a AGP slot. Only 3 PCI's :-/
I have a really crapy grafix card, some intel intgraded 8485G.

Or a ATI 700 or better?Ok, I found this,

There are a lot of cards available, some better than others. none are as fast as AGP but some are quite usable for all but the most demanding games. CHECK the system requirements for the games. 256 may only marginally better than 128 meg. RAM

Sounds like you've got a HP Compaq Presario, like me.
Contact HP support online at www.compaq.com .
They have GREAT support, and will even help you FIND a graphics card that's right for you.
(Just give them the specs of the program/game you are trying to run, and you will be helped IMMEDIATELY!)I don't have that, I have a HP pavilion a350w.
There are two problems with running high end games, besides no AGP slot:

1) HP

2) Celeron

Check for the power supply specifications. HP use adequate but small, and sometimes proprietary units.

It may be easier and better to GET another machine for gaming before sinking too much in this trying to achieve the impossible.

Pick a few games you are interested in and post back what the specs are for graphics card and processor.
When i got this I did'nt know anything about PC's.
I'll just buy a better PC.

Solve : external hard drive. how to make it primary.?

Answer»

Have connected an external hard drive to my OLDER model computer via usb port. . Operating on windows xp home edition. works just fine. have copied all files and programs to the external drive successfully. I want to boot up and operate on the external drive and use the original hard drive only for backup file storage. How can I set up to accomplish this?

:-?PLEASE clarify. Have you installed Windows on the USB drive? Can you boot from it?

As far as I know, this can be done, but why do it? I don't see the point of using a USB drive as the primary boot drive. If the hard drive you put in the external enclosure is the drive you want to use as your primary/OS hard drive, then why not install it as an internal drive and put your old/current internal drive in the external enclosure and use the external drive for backup?Sorry for the delay in reply.

Thank you for your response.

I have installed windows on the external drive.

Your idea of swapping drives is a good one except that I am uncomfortable with opening the thing up and messing with the wiring.

How can I direct the computer to boot on the external drive. It always boots on the internal one?Access your BIOS and see WHETHER it gives you the option of selecting a USB drive as the first boot device.Quote

:-?

Any particular reason to want to do this backwards? This does not seem like a good plan from the start even IF it can be done.the internal hard drive is 10 gig and fully loaded. The external is 250 gig. That is why I want to use it as primary. Why is ity a bad idea? We're not saying using the new drive as primary is bad. Indeed, you should use it for your OS. We're saying it should be installed as an internal drive, not used as a USB drive.

Anyway, if you've never accessed your BIOS, here's a reference which may be helpful: Access/Enter Motherboard BIOS

Installing a hard drive (internally) is not very difficult. You should have received some instructions with the drive, and can find more info on their website. Might be time to get immersed in what's inside that computer case. Be aware of the risks, to computer components, of static electricity. Here's a good reference: Installing A Hard Drive - Step by StepAfter reading about the dire consequences of making an error in editing the bios I think Ill take your advice and install the new drive internally, just to be safer. It looks a lot less risky. Thanks for your help.

Just for my info why to you object to using the usb buss for primatu drive operation? I would like to understand why you object. Not that I disagree with you. just want TOP know what is the disadvantage.?s,This is a USB drive?
You might not want to use a USB hard drive. Instead, if you can, and if the external hard drive has it, use firewire as it allows more signal at once, therefor, faster response.
You should be able to disable the main drive in your BIOS if you cannot set up a boot order...

(Like Soybean said: If you disable your main drive, then you need to enable boot from USB)
I had never heard of this being done. I did visit some Google hits on boot from external hard drive and the only references I saw talk about bootable USB flash drive, but they do not mean booting Windows; they are referring to an alternative to a bootable floppy disk, and this involves merely loading some DOS commands into the computer's memory.

So, I believe it simply will not work.Quote

Oh, it will work.
And external hard drive works just like a flash drive.
If you put DOS and an Autoexec.bat file with the right system files, it will load.
So, if you put Windows with the right system files, it will work as well.
If so, there's surely some info on it. I'd be interested in any references you can cite.Quote

Also, there was a mod that Dead_Reckon posted once that used an external drive to boot Windows XP.
Not really MUCH of a reference though, is it? Quote
Not really much of a reference though, is it?
That's what I was thinking. LOL.

I found a reference which talks about installing Windows on an external firewire drive. See http://www.windowsusers.org/externaldr.html. Here's a significant point from it: "The down side to Firewire is the same as USB—Windows must be working in order for the drive to be recognized. So if you lose your boot drive, you would have to install Windows and the Firewire drivers before you can restore everything else. Norton Ghost does have USB support but I haven’t been able to verify that it works ..."

Later, he says, "I also tried a USB 2.0 based kit that included the hard drive. My experience was not as smooth. I’ll write another article about that." I don't know whether he actually wrote such an article.

I have 5-6 email addresses.
They all have a different purpose.

That's just plain weird email.

Some of them have links in them. I click one once, and got a virus.

I was just hoping that someone would be able to know what the message meant.

LOL! Well, I know its not!
I've been getting these for a LONG time.
They put that nonsense at the Bottom of junk mail to confuse SPAM Filters, after all they not make any money from an Advert that gets AUTO Bin'edThe JUMBLED letters and digits you see are >uuencoded< content. In fact this is contained within any email that includes binary attachments (images, programs, zip files, etc). Email can only contain ASCII/Unicode characters, so binary stuff has to be uuencoded into ASCII/Unicode before transmission and then uudecoded at the other end. Most modern email programs do this automatically, transparent to the end user.

In the case of this particular message, it probably has malformed headers, due to a defect in the way the email was constucted by the spammers' software. A common problem, since spammers are always morons. The malformation prevents your email program from decoding the content, for which you should be grateful, actually!!! I was talking about the Nonsense that was legible.

I had no Idea the That the other nonsense was code.

It is not always that thousands of links are needed for a boost in Site rating,
a single link from a PR 6 site (which often sells like $100 or more per month) can instantly get your site indexed.

Google really give more importance to off page optimisation (i.e. link popularity) than on page optimisation (i.e keyword settings in webpages).

from what i heard, its not a special material, its merely the DIFFERENT ANGLES of all the panels on the outside. apparently the angles make the radar bounce off the plane in such a way that the radar does not recieve the signal it sent out.Quote

radar bounces waves off of objects, the material on the plane absorbes the radar waves, and yes, the design of the plane does helpwhat is this material then? because i saw a stealth jet up close and all i saw was black painted metal...It doesn't absorb radar.

The radar bounces off it but yes its angled so it doesn't make that big a jump if u like so the radar doesn't think its anything bigger than a bird.

there is only 6 F-117s in the world and only 6 people trained to fly them.

thy aren't making ANYMORE because they dont need to Technology is more advanced now. the F-35 and the F-22 Raptor ( i think its the 22) are all stealth planes.

the F-117 was created i think in the cold WAR so it could go behind Russian Air defences and Nuke them if that was needed.

Solve : "No boot devices were found - system halted"?

"No BOOT devices were found - system halted" is the message that came up after my eight year-old told me "the COMPUTER is making funny sounds and won't turn on."

I know enough about computers to be dangerous but still need elf supervision. Did my computer go to pc heaven or is there anything I can do before I THROW myself onthe mercy of LOCAL IT help (which is iffy at best)?

Scuse if this is already out there... I'm really new on the site.

Thanks for any help!!!

try hearing where the sound is coming from. from what you described, it sounds like a fried hard drive. replacing it before thowing away the whole computer might be a GOOD idea. Is the hard drive seen in the BIOS? If so, try downloading free diagnostics from the hard drive maker's site.

That message usually comes from a dead or damaged hard drive, so the system cannot boot up.

Solve : Do you get any digital magazines??

Answer»

Well, do you? If so, what software do you use to read them? The two applications for reading digital magazines that I'm aware are Zinio Reader and Adobe Reader. I had a subscription to the digital edition of US News & World Report. And, I still have some older digital editions of PC Magazine. These are viewed with Zinio Reader, and they are identical to the print version, but offer some digital features such as active hyperlinks. In other words, if an article contains a hyperlink, as it would be printed in the print edition, it is a live hyperlink in the digital version. And, if you click on the title of an article in Table of Contents, the display jumps to that page. You can also highlight text with a yellow marker and make notes, called annotations, on a page. These stick; they will be there during future viewings. If you'd like to see what's available, visit www.zinio.com.

I also have some digital magazines from Qmags. These are viewed with Adobe Reader. They have some free stuff. Foxit Reader. Small and fast.

http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.phpSo, GX1_MAN, you're using foxy Foxit Reader for a digital magazine, right? What's the SOURCE of the magazine? I find Adobe Reader fast for viewing digital magazine. But, I'm curious as to whether Foxit can be used with the digital magazines from Qmags. When viewing a magazine with Adobe Reader, Adobe Reader looks quite different than when viewing PDF documents. The magazine display covers the whole screen/monitor. There's no Adobe Reader border around it.

Zinio has more functionality but is slower than Adobe Reader.I use it for TUX, a linux monthly. digital magazines? whats the world coming to??Kind of clumsy to carry to the bathroom.....

Hey now, a total of 4 votes so far. I'm overwhelmed! LOL

I would agree digital magazines can never truly take the place of print publications. You can not lay them on a coffee table for guests to ponder. And, yes, "Kind of clumsy to carry to the bathroom.....".

On the other hand, they may have some positive points. A frequent traveler could take the digital version to save space, assuming they would normally be taking a laptop computer anyway. And, I see them as a WAY of keeping older magazines without the clutter problem that seems to arise, for me at least, with print publications. I tend to keep magazines along time; so, the digital versions provide a way to keep many editions of a publication without CONTRIBUTING to household clutter.I wish more were available, and the cost of "printing" is minimal, so I can subscribe to many;)

Solve : Buying a New Computer?

Answer»

Greetings
After many years we are finally buying a new computer I currently work on a Compaq Pentium 3!

I use a computer at home for surfing, writing letters (glorified typewriter), scanning photos and printing. I don't play games, I don't download music. However, I want the capability of burning CDs for backup and data storage.

We like HP and have been looking at the A1510N and A1520N with a Viewsonic VA912B monitor, an HP 5440 printer and a Canon scanner. I can't find any online reviews for either of these two HP models. Has anyone read any reviews or have any experience with these? Thank you!Personally I would SUGGEST not buying an HP system, which is just a personal preference I know but I have never had anything but problems with them.

If you want a name brand, I would go with a DELL XPS system or a Sony VAIO. If you like VERY good systems, go to GLOBAL Computer (www.globalcomputer.com) and look at their Systemax systems. We have used these at my place of business for 8 years and have NEVER had one problem with them. Plus, they are anywhere from 200 to 500 dollars cheaper.

Global Computer is the same as TigerDirect (www.tigerdirect.com) BTW.

As your needs do not seem excessive, you could probably get by just fine with adding a d CDRW to your existing system. Cost about $30.

Nonetheless, if you want to buy a system new, and are not a gamer, then any of the major players should do fine for you. The name BRANDS offer less possibilities for expansion, but if you are hearing this for the first time, it probably doesn't matter. Those HP models are bought by many.

HOW can people upload files to your site? Are you saying they may be able to crack your FTP access? Then change your password frequently and make it a strong one.
No no no. I have upload forms. (Not yet available to public)
People don't know the upload directory, but what if they just went anonymous FTP and found it?
They could upload a PHP file that could potentially take over...

And there are many other ways.

How about this:
How would I force an upload form to deny a PHP file?Quote
People don't know the upload directory, but what if they just went anonymous FTP and found it?
Disable anonymous FTP access, or point it a a directory that prevents them viewing any other directories.

Quote
They could upload a PHP file that could potentially take over...
Only if anonymous uploading is permitting AND such uploads can be accessed via the web server.

Please tell me you're not that silly? That is pretty much the most insecure setup you could create for any web site.

Quote
How would I force an upload form to deny a PHP file?
Wrong question. You NEVER trust anything uploaded by a user. So you NEVER let a user upload to a folder that can then be accessed through the web server. The reasons for that should be obvious... If an OUTSIDE user can force the web server to parse a file he uploaded, he can do pretty much anything he likes with your server.

Therefore, whatever form processes the upload should check the file first, and enforce requirements (such as determining the file name and final location).

NEVER EVER put your web server in a position where it can be FORCED to run a file (of ANY TYPE) uploaded by a user.

Have I said that enough times yet? Quote

The form is what would allow any file to be uploaded. Not FTP.
Re-write: "How would I make a form only allow images to be uploaded"
(as the form is for images. And I would like images to be uploaded there. )
 • Do not store the incoming file in a folder that is within your webroot
 • You will need to rename the file, or at least check the filename, to prevent any existing files from being overwritten
 • Check the the file has an acceptable extension - .jpg, .gif, etc.
 • Use a PHP script to enable the image to be downloaded, but never run
 • Consider using the PHP image functions to test whether the file is an image (by checking its size, for example)
 • Consider emailing to you a copy of all uploaded files
