Solve : computer stuck in standby mode?

Answer»

Hi everyone. Ihave a computer stuck in standby mode and have had absolutely no success with bringing it out of this mode. I have tried everything that I have learned and ASKED several computer techs about this with no solution. Basically, it started with the cleaning of the key board and the sleep, power and wake keys being pressed almost at the same time and the screen indicating that the computer was going into standby mode. Thats been it from there onwards.
No matter what I have tried the computer will not reboot. On power up I have the fans, both the CD player and burner with power. I can open the trays and place a cd into them and it seems the drives are trying to access the disk but that's it. I think it might be in the Bios from what I have gleaned off the internet from a couple of sites, but I can not even get to that at the moment. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated at this point. Thanks.

Opeating system is Win XP Home
A Open Desk top PC
P4 2.0 ghz AX45-V motherboard
Is it a laptop or a dektop? How about some clues as to the hardware, operating system, etc. involved. Miss Cleo is off on Thursday. Thanks, I realized that afterward Hence the newbee tag. cant u just reset the bios by moving the blue jumper thing over one thing....

and taking the watch battery out waiting a lil bit then putting it back then moving the jumper back...

i hope one of the experts knows what im talking about...

if not ill look up the names and exact steps..

unlovedwarriorAs he has yet to return for 5 days hold off on those instructions just yet UL...

patio. 8-)ok but would that work just for my knowlegdeLook at the problem from this perspective:
You probably leave the computer in standby all the time, don't you?
Over night, when you leave, during the day when its not being used....
It may be that you use standby too often.

Anyways, I had the same problem for a while. Then, my computer got a virus, forcing my to loose all my data, reformat, and reinstall EVERYTHING. Amazingly, that fixed it all. Try disabling Virus Scanner, or other software that is running at the time.

Do you have a COMPAQ Presario computer?

Quiet, he's hibernating. Zzzzzzz. Quote

LOL
I am not sure, but who here thinks that reinstalling the OS would clear the problem? It won't run. That's the problem.

I would favor removing the CMOS battery for 10 minutes, or RESETTING thte BIOS with jumperes (if necessary) to get to default values. Then he MAY have to reinstall tthe OS, or it might be just fine.

If he ever returns maybe he will try this and post back. Quote
