I have windows XP. When I start up or reboot, my desktop appears as it should but then the screen goes black & the desktop reappears with the colors all wrong. I have to reset to "true color" & to 800 x600 & then the screen COME back to normal.

i was reinstalling the sound drivers on my EMACHINES t4165 with windows xp .
because i was in the middle of surfing the net and my whole computer shut down and
when it CAME up, it had a black screen with the WORDS opperating system not found,that has happend a few times so far but this time i had no sound? so i tried to download the drivers from emachines web site but it did not work.
then i got my restore cd and tried it that way, but it said no drivers found on my computer and i had to restart my computer, so i did and i left the restore cd in the DRIVE.
when it came back up it said new hardware found and my sound was working fine.
eMachines strikes again.

Be sure and keep your important data backed up. You may wantto test the hard drive with the free diagnostics from the hard drive maker's site.

If you don't SEE anything on "DA SCREEEN" It MAY WELL be that da power supply is shot.

..when i put everything back together and was plugging everything back. When i plugged the power it started making a noise and after a while a funky smell came about. I havent turned it on yet and inside the computer ive plugged everything back in to where it was before. Please Help!!!What... did you use... to clean it?

I need some help with something. Last Tuesday was a very bad day for me and it was made worse by the following issue with my computer. First, it is old very old, I know, I need a new one, but I hate buying new when old still works (well up until now anyway). Example, the TV in my bedroom I have had since I as 14, I am almost 30 now. Although now it permanently has these programming type numbers on the bottom of the screen I can’t get rid of…

I have a PC that was built for me by a guy that my Mom’s Ex BF knew for my Birthday in 1999 I think or was it 2001…. It has a P3, and hardly any RAM. The operating system is Millennium Edition. When built it was supposed to be top of the line… blah blah blah….

The PC’s performance has been slowing little by little over time, I had downloaded AOL 9.0 security edition for example to get the free virus and spyware stuff… and running AOL 9.0 takes a lot of memory from the RAM. So much so that I was having trouble using Party Poker

Last Tuesday I really needed an outlet for some emotions and turned on the PC. Opened and logged into AOL, then opened an Internet Explorer window to go to a website I like, and I got an error message that flashed too quickly to explain and the PC froze. So I “Control-Alt-Deleted” to the Task Manager and got rid of the Internet Explorer window and also AOL, because whenever this happens re-booting seems to clear the issue.

I powered down the correct way, and when powering back up before booting the PC was going through the “BIOS” screens were you can see what kind of hardware you have and stuff, and it gets to the part just before the ME screens pop up and the PC Makes a funny noise and it says: “INVALID system disk, hit any key to continue.“

Hitting keys just prompts it to make the noise again and the same message displays. “invalid system disk, hit any key to continue.“

I don’t want to get ripped off again like I did when I paid to have my cd burner installed.

Friends think that my operating software got hit by a virus or something that isn’t afraid of dialup modems, and my OS needs to be re-installed or updated.

Does it sound like that to you?
Or does it sound like an equipment issue with the floppy drive, if so I got $30 to buy a new one?
What are your thoughts on what happened?

General Questions that are rolling AROUND in my mind:

Can my "my documents" be retrieved by getting new operating software?
Can another pc or a flash drive retrieve the docs without me doing anything to the current pc?

I know I need a new pc I have for some time, because I really like online poker, and want to be able to use my MP3 player for more than a radio that I have had for over a YEAR.

I am of course able to get onto this wonderful looking site from work.

Thoughts?

NicIt sounds to me like a bad/failing hard drive.

You need to download the bootable software
to test the hard drive from the hard drive
manufacturer.One at the below site should work.

Looks like I will need to wait to do that HDD trick until I have a replacement PC, My Mom's PC has a bad vidio card but, I could put MINE in hers... hmmmm .... Wish this had happened before my ExBF left on Tuesday and he could have taken the HDD home. Not sure when I will see him again. I think I will try cleaning the inside of the PC too and ensuring that it is connected properly. Maybe the cat bumped into the tower too many times and it is dirty I am sure....... Make sure to remove all power to the case and don't use a vaccuum in there...compressed air works well.

Be forewarned also if that HDD is having problems the more you use it the less chance you have for data recovery.Not sure if it makes a difference but I played on PP too up until last week...I had two nics with over 200 mil in them and they will not let me sign in to either of them...I think that site is spending so much time trying to stop chippers that it's messing with our computers. :-/

I'm about to burn a CD from a record. I've got two different pressings which sound slightly different in terms of sound quality, and am putting up a small part of the first track from each record for this question. Which should I USE? I had to raise the amplitude of the first one listed by 2.7 to make the beginning about equal in volume to that of the second one listed. There is also no clipping from either recording. I'll be removing them once I get an answer about which one I should use. The last one or two words in each file is a reference to the label. Both records were on the Erato label. The first one is from an older pressing.

dl65 It may seem that way, but what I'm trying to aim for is better dynamics. You're probably hinting that the harpsichord is higher in volume? I can hardly tell any difference with the bass line.

dl65, there's one thing I do want to mention. When comparing the full first track from the blue/white label, compared to the black label, if the bass line starts at the same volume on the blue/white label as on the black label, later on in the song, the highest peak is closer to 0db on the blue/white than on the black label recording. (Yet, the middle section is slightly QUIETER.)Yes , ....... But without doing a full analysis and overlaying one over the other ..... thats what I heard.

I have a BrotherMFC-210C and it works just fine if I only want to print documents on regular paper. But if I want to print business cards it JAMS and most recently I want to make my own greeting card and it would not pick the paper up!!!!!! I cant find anything in my manual about making adjustments for different thickness'.

Nancy A lot of printers have difficulty with card - especially those that have tight bends on the paper feed path. Your printer manual will probably tell you the heaviest grade of paper it can take (e.g. 200gsm) and anything heavier/thicker is going to be a problem. You MAY have some success, gently nudging the card towards the printer during pick-up, but overthick stock WILL jam any printer not designed to take it. Be warned.Oh thanks so much! I live in an old home without ground (three prong) receptacles. How important is this to be using an adapter that operates a pc without the ground of the POWER PLUG connected?I think VERY important, but Fed and Homer are the electricians. It's up to you to decide whether or not you think this is of any benefit... what rob said is correct. the point of a grounding prong is to avoid electrocution. if there ever is a problem in your power supply, and the hot wire TOUCHES your computer case, the whole case will become energized. without the grounding wire, the circuit breaker will not turn off and therefore presents a shock hazard.

grounding is not necessarily crucial, but it is a lot safer.

P.S. there are ways to ground old recepticles if you really feel the need for the plug to be grounded.Thank you for that. Hi I'm thinking of passing my CURRENT PC down to a minor (12) and I'd just like to know that any objectionable material that used to be on it is gone for good.

Is it enough to do a restore point that overwrites the C and D drives ? Or will things linger. Do I have to worry about viruses/spyware in my recovery partition ? I'm even a little worried that she might try to recover deleted data (I dont know how or if that WOULD be possible) as she has a MAJOR intrest in all forms of forensics.

also I'm sorry if these types of questions are beneath you, I didn't know where or who to ask.best thing to do would be a complete reformat. And a clean install of your OS, that is if you have your original boot CDs.

If you don't have your boot CDs from when you got your PC, next best thing to do would be is running some anti-spyware, anti-trojan programs and doing a restore point. You can get a good list from anywhere for good programs, but I recommend AVG free, for a quick search a destroy. Go to microsoft.com for a decent list.

Hope this HELPS!Mine didn't come with a boot CD but thanks for the rest !Download CCleaner, and use it to clean out everything. That'll get rid of most stuff.

I will boot the computer, and nothing comes up on the monitor. It gave me two post code errors and I TRIED to research them, but found barely anything of use. The two post CODES were 2A, and 25. I also am unsure on the motherboard manufacturer, I looked on the mobo, found a name, researched that and got absolutely nothing.


Unsure what to do to troubleshoot the problem. My guess is to check the video card and other cables with another PC, but I don't have access to another PC with the same pins for the video card.

There is a LCD SCREEN on the front of the chassis that is displaying the errors*(UPDATE)

How do I remove the case from a Packard Bell Multimedia S607?What type of case is it? TOWER? Flat box? Have you looked for screws that fasten the cover to the chasis? The usual method is simply to remove such screws and then remove the cover. However, many major brands (Sony, Dell, etc.) may have snap-shut LOCKING MECHANISMS and may have hinged panels.

Without seeing your actual computer, I can only speculate on how it opens. Can you post a photo of it? Have you carefully examined the case to look for removable screws or some type of latch that can be pressed down with the thumb?Soybean: I was able to remove the case by removing all four screws of the bottom of the case,plus four screws on the back of the computer around the power SUPPLY. The bottom and SIDE are all one piece and slid off toward the bottom of the computer while it was lying on its side. I'd say this borders on hacking, zylstra555. I believe the information at http://www.yabbsupport.com/Backing_Up_and_Restoring is intended for forum admins, not forum members. I've never seen in any other forum - and I've seen a lot of them - such a suggestion by a forum member.

I believe one must logged on as admin to do this. If any member can actually do this, would you care to post the details of the procedure? How does a regular member to this?

I have an Dell Dimension 8100. It originally had windows ME on it, and now has an XP upgrade. It seems to have become quite unstable and I would like to wipe it clean and do a full XP install. I do not need any of the data or other programs on it. Basically I just want to start from scratch, or as close as I can get.

So, I have attempted to do this, but once in the recovery counsel I don't have the administrator password (which I never set). I have tried entering "password" or leaving it blank. No luck.

Acording to the Dell Dimension 8100 manual (online) I have to remove the password jumper and all should be well. I have tried this and had no luck as well. I have also tried rebooting without it, shutting down, and then rebooting with it intalled again. Still no luck.

It is a 2 pin jumper...if that helps?

Try using a spell checker and using proper English instead of text messaging. Sentence structure and punctuation with the rare capital letter is also helpful. It is easier to respond to coherent questions.

Using Windows XP I have MUSIC stored with mp3 file extentions in windows media player. I have written these FILES out to an audio rw-cd (CD-RW 650MB) with a cda file extention. Used the CD writing Wizard that came installed. Inserted into car stereo and comes up with ERR-------.
What do I need to do to have this useable in the car? Works fine using computer. If I need to change file extentions how do I accomplish it?

I have a Canon S400 printer. I replaced the black cartridge. Now the black isn't printing. I checked to nozzel and all the colors but black printed. Can any one help? THANKS1what happens when you print a test page?

Did you replace the cartridge with another empty cartridge? :-? It is a full cartridge - ink on my hands. When I GO to Maintaince it has CHECK nozzel and align cartridges. Align cartridges prints a totally blank page. No colored bars to align. I couldn't FIND printing a test page. petemily..... Well , have you tried removing the problematic cartridge and reseating it ? .
Have you tried checking to be 100% sure you removed the tape covering the end of the cartridge ? You wouldn't be the first person to forget that ......

DL65 And also try running the cleaning cycle. It MIGHT be a blob of dried up ink that needs clearing.

This is a computer forum, so there should be computer discussions.
Yet as an Other section, it grants freedom to "Other Topics" unless rules say otherwise such as the description of the forum.

I agree entirely with Rob and you others who voted for both.

With all due respect dl65, lighten up a bit. The thread in question was an intelligent conversation. There was no malice, ranting or disrespect of the beliefs of others. You moderators will always have the authority, and rightly so, to end a thread that ends up that way. What is wrong with getting to know how other CH members think about topics other than computers without having to go to another forum?

Anyway, you need some sort of mod chip to play copied/imported games, and you run a HIGH risk of damaging your PS2 whilst fitting it - your PS2 may not work, or it may not lay DVDs ... all sorts of strange things can happen.Thanks for the input Callum, and to set your mind at rest I'm only making a backup copy as the original is SERIOUSLY scratched (teenage SON syndrome) Thanks once again
