I have run into an ISSUE that I havn't seen before and am unsure as how to tackle it, When out look starts there is an error message and it SEEMS the emails are not being sent but they are, the recipient is recieveing them, also some downloaded music is being deleted, that is all I know for now, I have tried running spysweeper, panda anti and rolling BACK the system restore but it hasn't worked. Does anyone know if there is a VIRUS out there that causes these issues or if there is something else wrong. If its downloaded from KaZaa, it may have a string of programming in it.
Therefor, the piece of music is recognized as Spyware/Adware since it is from KaZaa. Running your antispyware/adware and possible your AV scanner may be the cause of the disappearances.

This is my first post and I'm glad I found yall. I have an older computer that has worked fine for the past couple of years, till I started having problems recently. I've researched and com to the conclusion that my PSU is going out. Now for my question. My computer is labeled as a compaq presario 4090us but when I use Belarc I'm told it's a 5108us. If you download and RUN Everest Home it should correctly identify it. If it is the same as Belarc I would go with that.

The replacement power supply must be able to physically fit appropriately in the case. Compaq's are average and usually of barely sufficient wattage. Can you see from the power supply in there the make, wattage and perhaps model number?

I recently got a HARDRIVE from a friend and when its boots up its like for some school computers called connections academy. anyways since its a school computer it has alor of restrictions so i need to reset my hardrive and wipe it so its just a normal operating systemsOkay, if I understand correctly, you got a HARD drive that was a school's computer... and now it's just yours? Bizarre, I wonder why the school would do that; in fact, you might want to consider that before you PUT crucial data on it.

Now, as for the technical details. If you have a Windows install DISK (a full install, not an upgrade), you can boot from the CD and use the tool in the install disk to format your ex-school hard drive, then install Windows. (This also works with Mac, Linux, and anything else.)

If you don't have a full install disk of your choice OS, but do have a full install of an older OS, you can STILL install from the Upgrade CD, but you'll be prompted to insert a full install disk from a previous OS. It'll still install the OS of your choice.

Tried changing fonts from within desktop/properties but it not accomplish this TASK. I did get some relief using the “larger icon” feature.

Quite a while ago I did accomplish this task but of course, I was smart enough NOT to write down exactly how I did it and so I am lost now. I do believe that this has something to do with a Registry value but HONESTLY cannot remember.

Ok. Here's another way to change most of the fonts...

Right click on your desktop, click properties, the appearance, then you have two options:
Choose between LARGE and SMALL font (in the "Font Size" box), or click ADVANCED.

In Advanced:
Choose the ITEM you want to change the font size of
(Some items have uneditable fonts!)
And then (if your still with these directions) choose the font size, then click OK at the bottom, the click APPLY.
Your changes will be seen immediately.
Please don't select a particularly large font size (like 72) that will take up WAY too much space.

Hello. My printer's (Lexmark Z45) ink cartridges don't move into place when I turn it on, even when I open the door to it. A blue light on the right side flashes instead of staying on, not flashing. What wrong and what can I do, if anything? Thanks in ADVANCE.
For the meaning of the error lights, check the troubleshooting section of your printer's manual. If you don't have a printed manual, it'll be on the CD. Report back if you don't know what to do about the error. When I try to print, I get a message that says the computer isn't communicating with the printer. The USB cable is inserted properly at both ends. I also tried to delete the printer program and reinstall it. When I tried to delete it, it said I can't because the printer driver is STILL working. I tried turning the printer on and off with the USB cable out and the other suggestions above, except I couldn't get to the cartridges to take them out. I couldn't find out what the flashing light means. What now? Thanks.The driver problem stopped and I was able to uninstall the printer program. Now, I keep getting a window that says that my computer can't detect my printer. I tried another USB cable that I'm sure works and I get the same message; that the computer doesn't detect the printer. The local electric authority was working nearby a few days ago, with the power going off and on a few times a DAY for two days. My printer problem started after that. Could there be a connection? I couldn't find out what the flashing light means. What now?

Hi all.
I wasn't sure where this should go so I put it under Other, feel free to move it if it's not in the right section.
When I'm using my DVD-RW drive whilst playing games from a CD or DVD or WATCHING a DVD, if I leave it for more than a minute or so whilst, for example, the game or movie is paused, then it spins down and then has to spin back up when I unpause.
This is quite annoying, because the movie then skips frames for maybe 20 seconds when I play again whilst the drive gets back up to speed, and it's the same with games.
I've looked in the options of the program I use to play DVDs (Cineplayer or PowerDVD), and the properties of the DVD drive, and in Control Panel, and I haven't found anything relating to this.
Is this just a built in POWER saving feature (it's a laptop) or can I change this? It happens when running on battery and when plugged in with or WITHOUT the battery.
It's quite a slow drive so I'm buying a faster EXTERNAL drive soon, but until then I'l have to use the built in one.

Careful in there...There are in fact very few options in the BIOS - date/time, password protection, legacy USB support and AMD PowerNow is about it

Do you use a wireless modem and router set up to connect to the interent?

NWell, as FAR as I know, I don't think you can make it into a "hub", but you could BUY a separate hub.
(A hub splits an Internet connection using a relay signal to repeat it over and over to each ethernet connection or wireless connection to allow several computers to connect at once)
You could make it into your networks central station. And yes, that can be wireless.

I noticed this in the corner at the bottom, and was wondering if a scale was associated with the tags. Like 1000 postings = one label, and 2500 = another label, etc .... or if the Admin of the Forum has CODE that monitors your posting history to fit you into a category and then color code you to the label or tag of HACKER, Genius, or what??? Kind of surprised that there is no mouse-over function to describe this.

My Dell Inspiron 1150 wont turn on. Its power LIGHT fan and disk drive turn on, and a light flashes by a lock with and "A" in it. I don't know anything whatsoever about the internet, but I was wondering if there is a way to block all the web sites on the internet except a few no matter what web browser i am using.

I want to show my dad that i can use the internet without getting into trouble so that he will at least let me have internet access.

Also, is there really such thing as a free ISP? I did a google search and it came up with a search engine to search by zip code for a free isp.
I'd suggest something like CyberPatrol's Internet safety software. Or you might like to refer your dad to >K9 Web Protection< (free).Read up on how to use a hosts file and then PRESENT your findings to him...this should impress him somewhat.I thought about mentioning the hosts file, but thought some approach that ALLOWS password control by his dad might be best. If using the hosts file for this purpose, how can junior be prohibited from editing it? Could he be restricted by dad using a passworded ADMIN account to edit the hosts file and child using a limited account when using the computer?Depending on the setup there are a few methods for locking down a host file...and yes i agree dad should ultimately have the final say.Also, you might want to just go with a web filter (I think that cyber patrol will do)

See i am asking cause there is stuff on there, I know I haven't done or been to. A little concerned either maybe soon to be ex hubby or young son. It is in the ClassRoot. Zone map. Domains. Sorry for asking something whichtryinghere..... the registry is one part of the computer you don't want to play around in unless you know what your doing or you might do serious damage to your machine .
So what you really want to know is where have the others using that machine been?
If they have covered there tracks it will be difficult to see where they have been ...but you might try looking in the history folder and ALSO the temp internet folder .

What exactly have you found? It could be just harmless, before you start making DECISIONS like those...Ok if I look in reg edit. under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT then I scroll to HKEY_CURRENT_USER
scroll to MICROSOFT click on it to open and then I see Zonemap (open it) see Domains (open it next) and then a whole lot comes up. search assistants, 1800's, keno, xxx and more xxx under lots of different NAMES and , all kinds of stuff
I haven't done anything to the reg.

Microsoft is probably the greenest company in all of high tech. Not green in the environmental sense — green with envy.

Microsoft is so jealous of the iPod’s success that TUESDAY it will unveil a new music system — pocket player, jukebox software and online music store — that’s an unabashed copy of Apple’s. It’s called Zune.

The amazing part is that it’s Microsoft’s second attempt to kill the iPod. The first was PlaysForSure — a gigantic multiyear operation involving dozens of manufacturers and online music stores. Microsoft went with its trusted Windows strategy: If you code it, the hardware makers will come (and pay licensing fees).

And sure enough, companies like Dell, Samsung and Creative made the players; companies like Yahoo, Rhapsody, Napster and MTV built the music stores.

But PlaysForSure bombed. All of them put together stole only market-share crumbs from Apple. The interaction among player, software and store was balky and complex — something of a drawback when the system is called PlaysForSure.

“Yahoo might change the address of its D.R.M. server, and we can’t control that,” said Scott Erickson, a Zune product manager. (Never mind what a D.R.M. server is; the point is that Microsoft blames its partners for the technical glitches.)

Is Microsoft admitting, then, that PlaysForSure was a dud? All Mr. Erickson will say is, “PlaysForSure works for some people, but it’s not as easy as the Zune.”

So now Microsoft is starting over. Never mind all the poor slobs who bought big PlaysForSure music collections. Never mind the PlaysForSure companies who now find themselves competing with their former leader. Their reward for buying into Microsoft’s original vision? A great big “So long, suckas!”

It was bad enough when there were two incompatible copy-protection standards: iTunes and PlaysForSure. Now there will be three.

(Although Microsoft is shutting its own PlaysForSure music store next week, it insists that the PlaysForSure program itself will live on.)

Microsoft’s proprietary closed system abandons one potential audience: those who would have chosen an iPod competitor just to show their resentment for Apple’s proprietary closed system.

To make matters worse, you can’t use Windows Media Player to load the Zune with music; you have to install a similar but less powerful Windows program just for the Zune. It’s a ridiculous duplication of effort by Microsoft, and a double learning curve for you.

So how is the Zune? It had better be pretty incredible to justify all of this hassle.

As it turns out, the player is excellent. It can’t touch the iPod’s looks or coolness, but it’s certainly more practical. It’s coated in slightly rubberized plastic, available in white, black or brown — yes, brown. It won’t turn heads, but it won’t get fingerprinty and scratched, either. It sounds just as good as the iPod.

The Zune matches the price ($250) and capacity of the 30-gigabyte iPod. But it’s noticeably thicker (0.6 inch vs. 0.4), taller (4.4 inches vs. 4.1) and heavier (5.6 ounces vs. 4.. Battery life is the same for music playback (14 hours), slightly better for video (4 hours vs. 3.5). The three-inch screen has the same 320-by-240-pixel resolution, but it’s larger (3 inches vs. 2.5), so movies and slide shows feel more expansive.

What looks like an iPod scroll wheel, THOUGH, is a fakeout. It doesn’t turn, and it’s not touch-sensitive. Instead, it’s just four buttons hidden under the compass points of a plastic ring.

Scrolling accelerates as you press the top or bottom button, but the iPod’s wheel is much more efficient. On the other hand, the Zune’s left and right buttons jump between menus (for example, Album, Artist, Genre) with less backtracking. The software design is beautiful, simple and graced by brief, classy ANIMATIONS.

The Zune’s screen is taller than it is wide — unlike the iPod’s — so you can see more of your lists without scrolling. But it’s all wrong for photos and videos. So when videos or photos play, the screen image rotates, meaning you have to turn the player 90 degrees. And just as on the iPod, portrait-oriented photos are now shrunken, crammed the wrong way on the horizontal screen.

The Zune has a built-in FM radio receiver, and even shows the name of the current song, if the station broadcasts it. Reception is fairly weak, the headphones must be plugged in to serve as an antenna, and you can’t make recordings.

The big, whomping Zune news, though, is wireless sharing. The Zune has a built-in Wi-Fi antenna. (Turning it on costs you one hour of battery life.)

During the playback of any photo or song, you can view a list of Zunes within 30 feet. Sending a song takes about 15 seconds, a photo 2 seconds; you can’t send videos at all.

Your lucky recipient can accept or decline your offering — and, if you have really terrible taste, can block your Zune permanently.

It all works well enough, but it’s just so weird that Zunes can connect only to each other. Who’d build a Wi-Fi device that can’t connect to a wireless network — to sync with your PC, for example? Nor to an Internet hot spot, to download music directly?

Microsoft's already making a move to make the device unusable as a mass storage device (and only implementing "Media Transfer Protocol", which means you'll need Windows Media Player to transfer songs onto your Zune, or some hacked together client that supports the same protocol. The only problem is, with as much DRM is already on Zune, it would make no sense for them not to encrypt the protocol too, since it could be used to strip songs from the Zune and all). This would cut the device off from Linux and from Macs, until a hack got around it.

It also would make the Zune unusable for backing up your computer, which one of the convenient features of the iPod as it STANDS (both my iBook and my Lifebook can be backed up on my iPod and I've still got plenty of room for music and movies that I'll never actually watch on a screen smaller than my palm).

Do you know what DRM is? It is software attached to media files that limits your rights to copy and use the file; giving you a time limit of a year (or two if they're feeling generous), usually no permission to copy the file at all, and limiting the ways it can be used. If you had a Zune, you could only play music downloaded from Zune (Or iTunes or Napster) which you can keep for a year apiece. If you send it to a friend, they can have it for three days before it dies and they have to buy it themselves for a year. OH, and did I mention that Microsoft can revoke your license rights without any lawful reason, causing you to buy all of your music all over again? And if your Zune breaks, you may (Only because the Zune service is incomplete) have to repurchase your entire music library?First off i would like to say anything is better then an iPod.
Secondly from what GX1 said im under the impression that on the Zune you can only play music that you have paied for, and after a year the song dies on you? Is this true?!

Just added this to the list of things i won't buy...A big "no" from me as well.Yup, thats a definetly a big NO on my list. In Canada downloading music is legal (im pretty sure )yes its really legal to download music up here.

Have you tried reinstalling/updating your graphics drivers?I REALLY appreciate all the help I have tried all of the above suggestions except CHANGING my video card. Another PROBLEM that I failed to mention was at the same time my HP printer stopped working. I can get it working for a while but sometimes it quits & I UNPLUG it & it will go back to working until I reboot again.

This isnt a huge problem, but i would LIKE to get it fixed.

When i click File, Edit, View, Tools ect on the INTERNET TOOL bar.. the shadow of the frame shows up (barely) but the text doesnt. to be able to see the menu when i click file, I have to run my mouse over where the menu SHOULD be, then they show up one by one... This happens for most windows I open, Internet explorer, computer background (right click menu)..

Ive scanned my computer several times for virus and spyware with Spyware doctor, the free versions of AVG Anti-spyware and Anti-virus, didnt fix it.

I hope someone has a solution. Thanks in advance.

Computer SPECS: processor, amount of RAM, onboard video or add-in video card, hard drive (size and amount of free space)?Right click desktop/properties. Click APPEARANCE tab. You can set colors to get more contrast or click the "scheme" tab and select one of those.

Lately I've been having a lot of problems; computer crashes. burned out mother boards and HD's going South. So I BOUGHT a new lap TOP hoping to repair the desk top. Now my HP 1350 all in one will not scan. When you press the scan button the on/resume button flashes and nothing happens. Am I on the way to the local computer store for another x-mas present from me or is there an easy fix? Have you got the drivers installed PROPERLY?

Is it your own personal file? Rapidshare recently change and many accounts have changed. Just verify if its yours that your account is still there.

As for the code, it is the 3 digits at the bottom you type in before submit. If ,I was a betting man , I would think that you either are (or have been ) using proxies to attempt to get around the waiting time .
Rapideshare allows you to d/l only so much per hour "FREE" ..... So for example , If you enter the rapideshare link in the address bar of IE , click go or enter , you will be taken to the rapideshare page ........ scroll down to the bottom of that page and click on the "FREE" button ....... you are sent to another rapideshare page ......and you will see the time counting down ....and when it gets to Zero ........ scroll down a bit and you will see the box , which will prompt you to enter the characters shown......... ( if the clock hasn't timed out , no characters will be offered .) If you have exceeded the FREE hourly amount , you will see the message that you have exceeded your allowable D/L so either wait for (............. time will be shown ) or apply for a premium account .
Follow the rules and you won't have any problems ........

Ok , here's what I mean ......... when you go to rapideshare and want to D/L say a movie ........ you have 2 options , either the free download or a premium account ( which you pay for).
Rapideshare also knows that there is and always will be people out there trying to find a WAY around not being able to get more than the ALLOTTED amount per hour FREE...... unless the user has a premium account. So their system sees and records your ip address. Users have attempted to hide their ip address's but as far as I know this practise doesn't work.
If you are talking about something differant please let me know.

Don't get an "off-brand" whatever the price.I'm planning on doing internet, email, photoshop, flash, and some programming languages. I don't plan on using it for gaming. I can only spend upto $750 for it.

You are technically correct.

However, ChinaNetCom do not provide an SMTP service. I spent a long time talking to their customer support line with my wife translating for me, and also talked to several competent Chinese computer users, only to discover that everyone uses 163.com or hotmail via HTTP.

Nearly all well designed SMTP servers from ISP's will reject any outgoing email that doesn't originate from their own broadband or dialup connections.

I've configured my own UK SMTP server to reject any outgoing email that doesn't originate from my internal LAN, and so as I havn't configured VPN on my LAN I can't use that from my laptop on China.

I think the issue here is China's highly restrictive country-wide firewall/censorship policy, rather than unavailability of a particular protocol.

It is a trivial matter for a spammer to trick many SMTP servers into thinking that an email originates within the ISP's circuits though.

Which server software are you using? When not set up a restrictive relay (accessible only by you)? Or a web interface (e.g. Squirrelmail) that enables email to originate from your own server?

I was making a point about how easy it is to use gmail as an outgoing SMTP server, to circumvent all of these issues.

FYI, I'm using Sendmail 8.11.7 on Solaris 7 with procmailsanitiser on an old SPARCstation-1 which I borrowed from work 6 years ago. Other than editting the /etc/aliases file occasionally and adding new user accounts, I've not had to do anything to maintain this antique for atleast 3 years

I am TRYING to figure out a problem my parents are having on their computer. They are having problems logging on to the internet. They have a comcast broadband connection, and whenever they try and connect, instead of the homepage (www.comcast.net), the get an HTML page stating the the web page cannot be displayed, cannot find server or DNS error. It's a page that I'm sure everyone has seen at least once. Nothing has been changed since the last time they were able to connect. It suddenly started happening. Comcast is saying that everything is fine on their end, and that this must be a computer problem. I don't know much about their computer other than that it is an older Dell running Windows 98. Any help with this problem would be appreciated.

Have they made any changes to thier system recently? Also, I trust you have a DSL MODEM. This sounds strange, but it usually helps. Turn off the computer. Once it is off, unplug the power cord going into the DSL modem for 15-30 seconds. After waiting, restore power to the DSL modem, and give it about a minute to warm-up. You may now turn on the computer. Tell us if this changes anything.

They do have plenty of security software installed. Nothing has been changed on the computer since the last time they were able to connect. This problem just happened suddenly. Has anyone else heard of Microsoft SharePoint Services? I only heard about it a few days ago and I am in need of more information on using it. I have tried the almighty google, but to no avail. VNC (Virtual Network Computing) software makes it possible to fully interact with any computer from any other computer or mobile device anywhere on the Internet. The software is cross-platform, allowing remote control between different types of computer. There is even a Java viewer, which allows any desktop to be controlled remotely from within a browser without the necessity of installing extra software.

The DNS server will be assigned to you by your internet service provider. You'll need to ask them. The details may be on their web SITE. Normally I would expect the DNS to be AUTO-detected and configured so you shouldn't have to do it manually. What hardware are you USING to connect to the internet?Of course, these are all LANside statistics and if DNS is set to auto but no connection is established...........
