Answer» After using the shut down in TASK manager,my computer will not turn on. I seemed to be getting power to the monitor, but power light is blinking from amber to green. Nothing is happening in the "tower". I have a IBM Aptiva 2142 Win 98 Thanks for any suggestions that might help! :-?I don't THINK this is caused by the way you shut it down. It sounds like a power source problem.
It everything plugged in? Did you flip a switch on the back of your computer that looks like something with a "1" or a "0" [ 1 | 0 ]
(it should be switched to the "1" side)
Lets WAIT and see what others have to say.How old is that machine? Perhaps the power supply is feeling it's age.Computer is a 1999 IBM I could not find the buttons (1) (2) I hear the monitor make a distinctive"click " then the lights start flashing. When I unplug the tower and plug it back in the fans run for a second or two then everything just "pauses". It was all working beautifully until I shut it down.I really appreciate your help! Please don't grade me on spelling or grammar!! LOL! Based on what you have said, a 7 year old power supply is the most likely source of the problem.
Here is a cheap replacement possibility if you want to continue using that machine:

Does your power supply look like that? They are fairly easy to change out, and for a solution for $20.....Yes it does! I followed your Ebay link and purchased the power supply! Figured it wouldn"t hurt to try! Thanks for your help! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]Let us know how it WORKS out or if any problems. I recieved the "new"power supply this A.M. installed it,didn't work!! Any other suggestions. Monitor is still blinking and the tower just "stands" there with a blank expression! lol! [smiley=lolk.gif]Hardware problem? Perhaps the RAM?are you sure that the power button is hooked up to the mommyboard all the way / correctly? if that's not it, it MAY be a CPU issue
