Computer / Internet connection type / operating system
When did it start happening?
Alan <>< You could do the environment (and your bill) a favour by turning your computer off if you're not using it
If you are using a dial-up connection you may need to redial. My computer is an emachines. I use windows XP I have internet explorer and bellsouth webmail. I do not know what an operating system is and this just started happening a few days ago after a friend checked my computer to see if anyone had remote access to it. Thanks for the response. NewbegNice NAME newbeg. Sorry, I can't help, I just stopped for a nice chat!
/meI'd have my 'friend' stop by and undo what he/she did. Take note of what's going on.
An operating system is what you use to run programs. Yours is XP.
Are you dial-up / DSL / cable?
Alan <>< HI Alan, I am DSL. Use to have RoadRunner but recently moved and it is not available here. I read on the internet today and found info on turning off my zone alarm. I did that earlier today and have not had to reboot all day. Maybe my problem is solved. Thank you Alan, for helping me. Newbegno one ever make fun of me again !!! Y, Hoo made fun of you??As is typical, newbeg, members have turned your thread into their own personal conversations. Are you accessing the WEB without a firewall now? You DO NOT want to be doing that! "I read on the internet today and found info on turning off my zone alarm. I did that earlier today and have not had to reboot all day."
rlprlp is correct. Unless you have a firewall (either 3rd party like Zonealarm) or the built-in Windows firewall, you should not be on the internet.
Check to see if your Windows firewall is on. (Start/Control Panel/Firewall) You'll only see this if you have SP2 on your computer. To check that go to Control Panel again and double-click the "System" icon. The opening page will show you if you have SP1 or SP2.
If you don't have SP2 go here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx
Download and install
The other thing you can do is learn how to configure Zonealarm and permit it to let you on the Internet. It takes a little doing but you'll be oh-so-grateful once you're behind it. Alan <><
