Solve : long distance wireless network?

Answer»

Hi, I am wanting to set up a WIRELESS home network and I need it to extend through 1 EXTERIOR wall, aprox 500ft and through another exterior wall. There are a few trees between the two structures but not too thick. Any ideas on what I could use. I'm sorta STUPID on this subject as I know nothing on wireless network. I will be connecting using satellite internet to 2 desktops. Thanks for any help you can give me.Run a long cable to another wireless hub. How about a range expander?Microwave Transmitters!Sounds expensive. Maybe the neighbors just need to get their own or stick with dial-up. I measured it out and its RIGHT at 300' so maybe there is a chance.300 + feet is about the limit before signal degradation i believe...Rob would know alot more about this.

Spot on for cat5 (you'd have to use a repeater to go further than this) but you can double that for cat6. Up to 200 metres (660-ish feet) is possible.

Obviously your mileage may vary, and over that kind of length of cable run, you'd really have to use top quality cable for the best results. If the network can't go that far, make solutions with the adapters. Buy outdoor antennaes which can go up to a kilometer or so (that's what they say).

Or.....PLUG a bare metal wire in the antannae slot of the wireless router and wrap it around the roof of ur house 2-3 times. You'll broadcast signals for miles. ( I wonder if that really works. Someone once told me that worked with an adapter).
