Solve : Purchasing ram from Crucial com in the USA?

Answer»

Don't know anyones' views on the subject about customs duty, but it would be nice if someone could answer if not by the board then by pm.
The last time l bought ram from Crucial in America, l got clobbered for a somewhat enormous Customs and Excise duty from the French government. It still, just, pays me to do it this way rather than order from the UK.
Can l order and pay for the ram using a UK credit card and have it sent to my cousins' address in Florida? They can then send it on to me by letter post. It would save me a lot of money. What are the comebacks, if any?
Thanks
As far as Crucial accepting a UK credit card, unfortunately only Crucial would know the answer to that unless someone here has actually done this. However, I don't believe they would have any issues sending it to your cousins' house in Florida. However, if you're going to have your cousin ship it to you across the border, it's still going to have to go through customs. All packages going across the border, regardless of who is sending them has to go through customs. Thanks very much CHA (and for not blocking the post as l suppose it's basically fraud).
An interesting answer, and l don't really want to GET anyone in trouble.
Thanks again.

it's basically fraud

Yes. Why should you get help breaking French law?
"l suppose it's basically fraud" --not necessarily so. For instance my experience (quite extensive) in purchasing on line from U.S. sources is the following.
1.If the article purchased has a certain value (i don't know what the upper limit is) it does not attract customs fees of any kind. Nor does it require being shipped through a "broker" (which again would RESULT in high fees --as they usually have a minimum flat fee to handle merchandise). This has also been the case with items purchased from the far east (IE Hong Kong).
2. When i am purchasing items that are of high value i have them shipped to a U.S. courier LOCATION (privately operated commercial entity that accepts shipments on your behalf). They email me when it arrives and i go and get it and declare it at the Canada customs and pay any fees that are required (usually only the HST).This eliminates the "broker" involvement. Usually there is no State of FEDERAL U.S. taxes applied if it originates outside the State where it is delivered -unless they operate a "bricks and mortar" retail store in that State. Therefore the HST becomes the sole tax on the purchase.
3. It may be that France has a situation that exists in Canada. If you are in the "other purchasing country" you can send yourself "gifts" up to a certain value -can't remember what that is as i have never done it. Or some one else can also send you "gifts" up to a certain value and not attract fees.
Bottom line i do not know what your Customs laws are in your country or if your geographic proximity to an international border is an option to lessen your fee impact. I give you these observations in the hope that more investigation of your applicable laws will allow you to perhaps INVOLVE other options.truenorthWouldn't it be easier to use Crucial's scan to figure out what kind of memory you need, then just buy it locally? Is memory that much more expensive in France?Quote from: truenorth on November 22, 2010, 09:54:38 AM
lessen your fee impact

... avoid paying the lawfully due taxes and import duties laid down by your government and thereby avoid taking your fair share of contributing to the costs of running your country?
