Answer» Hi; Just picked up an IBM thinkpad (760ED), with windows 98. It will only boot in safe mode. If I try normal start up it will go to a dos screen and freeze. I have proper windows 98SE ,and windows 98 upgrade discs, but the unit will not run them. Any ideas on what I need to get it up and running .?. Thanks sam311Do you have a floppy and a CDROM drive? Is the machine set to boot fromCD ROM first? What happens when you INSTALL a "proper" disk? What is the history of this machine? Details are needed as to what we are working with.HI; As to the history, as far as I know it was used in a business, and was leased. There is a cd drive, but no floppy. ( I do have an external floppy drive.) When a disc is put in the drive the indicator light flashes and the drive starts, after a few seconds the drive stops. I've TRIED starting the unit with the disc in, but had no luck. When in safe mode I am able to open and run the programs that are on it, (a few games, word, ETC.) The clock and date are functioning properly. It is safe mode, as the words appear in the four corners. This machine is too old to support booting from an external floppy drive...as GX1_Man said set the machine to boot to CD_Rom, insert your Win98SE CD and it should start the setup process...
patio. 8-)F1 at boot should get you into the BIOS to make sure that CDROM is set to boot first. If you cannot get into the BIOS, then you have other MAJOR problems.
