Installing windows 7 RC (7100) 32-Bit on a blank HDD Toshiba Satellite M40 (Intel Centrino, NVIDIA Graphics) laptop is not going well.

First part of the install runs fine, then it RESTARTS, then it says "completing installation", which is fine, then it restarts again, then it hangs at "Starting Windows". Booting in safe mode it stops at "CLASSPNP.SYS"

Any ideas? I did some googling and it says Classpnp is something to do with video drivers? I don't really understand what i've found.

Thanks for any suggestions.It is possible that during the automatic harwdare detection, it mis-detected the GPU ( Video CPU ) of your system and the driver it is trying to run is not compatible.

For DESKTOP systems this can be fixed by placing a video card in place of the integrated GPU, but on a laptop there is no alternative usually. Only other suggestion i can think of is that at the initial install where it gives you the short prompt to press I think its F6 to install drivers, you might be able to use that for installing video support, however I have only used that for installing RAID drivers for adaptec cards and never used that as a way to change any other drivers.Hooray!
I found a fix for this on Sevenforums.

Use setup disk/repair computer/go through all the rubbish as it says that it doesn't know what to do/advanced options/command prompt/navigate to windows|system32|Drivers/ type "Ren pcmcia.sys pcmcia.bak"

You, Sir are my personal hero. When installing Windows 7 Pro on an old Toshiba Satellite M40-129 (PSM40E), it alsways hung at classpnp.sys.

When finally renaming the PCMCIA.sys so it COULD not be loaded any more, the laptop finally started Windows 7 Pro for the first time ever.

To check the display, I have win xp home (with poor display) and installed win xp pro (good display)
This was to check the hardware. To check the display drivers in system 32 (wiavideo.dll) and system (vga device driver)
I copied the drivers from win xp pro (good display) and replaced the drivers in win xp home (bad display) with them. No change.

Win xp home seems to have a common display problem because I searched it in Google (mv4_disp) but I am unable to find a fix.

falcon  There should not be any difference in the way two versions of XP handles the display. Some more information is needed.
What do you call a 'poor display'? Fuzzy? Poor color?
What make of computer do you have?
Do you have original install CD of both XP home and XP pro?
Are both SP-3? Have you done updates on both?
Have you compared Safe Mode display for both versions?
It ought to bee the same.

The drivers should actually come from Dell.
Dell's are finicky like that.

I am running Windows ME on ANOTHER computer which was given to me - without the CDS that originally came with it.

I defragmented and ran virus and spyware scans.  But when I tried to connect to the internet to download the updates (which had never been done), it worked for awhile.  Then the computer DISCONNECTED itself from the internet.  When I tried to reconnect, I received the message that the msvcp60.dll file was missing.  I downloaded it from three different files to my CD drive, then copied it to computer #2.

Now I receive the message that the file appears to be corrupt, to reinstall and try again.  As mentioned, I did this three times.

Does anyone have any idea how I may fix this problem without the ME cd? in the msdos prompt type scanreg/restore and chose the last good cab file......so the command looks like this c:\windows  scanreg/restoreThank you Merlin_2 -

Being unfamiliar with Windows ME, I can't get the system to start in DOS mode (tried F8, F10, F12, etc)

I have been doing some troubleshooting on an XP computer for a friend. I ran Norton AV but it was unable to fix a problem 1 problem with a file named ~511247.tmp. I ran Task Manager to try and find anything that looked like it would be using it. I ran msconfig and deselected all. I started in Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Command Prompt. But I have been unable to delete or change the attributes from read only. Any ideas on how to get rid of this file.

LarryTake a look at the sticky in Viruses for LINKS to download spyware/adware apps.Not all temporary files can be deleted when the computer is operating.. They are usually deleted on resetting from my experience.

I think it was Norton that found it, but could not delete it.

I have also tried to close as many running programs as I could with Task Manager.
I have tried deleting it in Safe Mode
I have tried deleting it in Safe Mode Command Prompt
And now I have tried Merlin_2s link
It is still denying me access

Any more ideas?

LarryI've had this happen before - .tmp files that won't delete. It is usually the result of a recently deleted program that has left remnants in the registry. When these remnants load Windows thinks the file is in use and so you get "access denied". Editing the registry and removing any keys that reference the program will allow them to be deleted. You might also have to remove a read only attribute (if you haven't tried that already, do that first).I have tried changing the attributes in Windows and DOS. No luck. I'll take a look in the registry too.

dl65  If you are running XP from FAT32, boot on a Win98SE floppy and go to the Windows\Temp directory in DOS, and delete the file.

If that or (if you have a decent custom disk, not just the minimal EBD) DELTREE c:\windows\temp followed by MD Windows\Temp doesn't do it, or if you have mounted XP on NTFS, you can do it with a Knoppix LiveCD bootable Linux CD...Reply to dl65.
Well, I passed the DD along to my friend. I had high hopes but she says that she still received and access error on the DOS delete. So she tried the delete on restart, still no luck.

for some reason recently when i click on a link on any website, it will not load up!  
i've deleted any virus' and spyware but it still hasn't solved the problem...

for instance if i go onto a sports website and click on the latest scores tab and it supposed to open up in a seperate window but it will not load up, the new window POPS up but nothing appears and this happens on every website! so i cannot click on links.

does anyone know what the problem is?

Since I found out that Windows tries several paths to load DLL's when any application is loaded (tool used: process explorer from www.sysinternals.com), I'm going to move most of the system DLL's to a pcmcia flash drive. The system should boot FASTER and also run faster.

After having started first experiments, I'm not successful until now. There seems to be no possibility to explicitly specify a "first seek" path, in this case e:\windows\system.
When windows does perform automatic path seeking, it seeks (e.g) first in the application directory, then the DESKTOP directory and then the system directory.

Anybody having an idea? Probably I should use a sort of technique of mapping a directory from the flash drive into a corresponding C:\drive directory (when such is possible), or even specify the flash drive as a sort of cache extension.
(Note: target is Windows 98 )you may also have to take in account as well the ram and cpu...to make it run faster and load faster.

...i should have imagined that m$oft thought of this when it produced windows?RAM, CPU? To my opinion these factors are not crucial in today's computer performance. Most standard apps and business apps run smoothly when the CPU is quite "old" (in this case 266 MHz/96 MB RAM). Only games and image apps need more capacity today.

But startup times of apps is quite slow. Here state of the art computers have an advantage. But alas, not so dramatically, since the hard disk must move increasingly frequently forth and back from SECTOR to sector. This permanent moving is gone worse as programs got bigger. Program startups require a mix of resources, e.g. own dll's and windows dll's from the system directory. Having only the most frequent windows resources copied to flash would help substantially.
Of course, a big disk cache (i.e. RAM) would help, however not as good as a permanent fast access resource.

all the programs on my computer STOPPED opening.  whenver i try to open simply programs such as paint or even the calculator a sign that says

"Windows cannot open this file."

and i have two choices to 1. use the WEB to find the appropriate program
2. SELECT program from a list.

I'm launching an executable in a batch file using

START /WAIT

The /WAIT option is necesary, as I have to wait for the executable to write some data before continuing. HOWEVER, sometimes the executable gets stranded, so the REST of my batch file never gets executed, they keep on waiting for ever for the stranded executable.

How do I build in a time out for this???

(Something like a maximum execution time and if this time is passed then break and close the program)

Using PAUSE is an option of course, but that will give the same long (maximum) executable time for EVERY run of the executable. With this I'll lose a lot of time, 'cause the time it takes for the executable to do the calculations differs quite a lot for every run, it's a last resoure to USE PAUSE.

Are there really no other options?
Search one of the freeware utility sites for DOS tools, you want a 'pause' utility you can set to time out and resume the program/batch string. It will 'wait' for a specified amount of time before allowing the host program to resume...Yes, in fact my previous answer to PAUSE option doesn't hold really. I thought that PAUSE was for a certain given time, but it's just a function to wait until you press a key. This will never do, 'cause it has to be automatic, if I have to wait and to press a key, I could do every run by hand :-(

I have several documents scanned into my machine,just under 1gb's worth.

Here is my problem I am looking for a particular phrase (the phrase is "Brand Awareness") contained within the text of the DOCUMENT, the things is I can't remember if it is a Word or pdf. document.
I do remember when I saw that phrase I typed it into a word document ( just the two words ) now when I do a search all it throws up is this particular word document.

I can't even remember anything else in the document or even what the document was about, but I know realise that I should have saved this document in a special place.

I expect everybody to jump on me and shout what an idiot, yeah, yeah, OK I admit it.

What I am asking for does anybody know how I can extract this information from my HDD, before I go to B & Q and buy a BIG hammer ? First of all, the document, most likely using your documents folder for just one t user. That narrows it down. Try this:look at the my documents folder. you will see the search option. Ask it to look for all documents, sometime in the last year. The size is probably less than the megabyte. That then just the phrase you want. Just a single phrase. The built-in search features not very sophisticated. Expected to take quite a while to look through all your documents that were created in the past year of the size less than 1 MB and have that phrase found inside. It will do it, but it just takes a while.
Now than, this is the KIND of thing you don't to very often, so there's no point in investing in some expensive software to resolve just one issue. If you have another folder available somewhere or another storage device. You can late you can later copy all of the files found to another location outside of the my documents folder.
Then using the newly created folder. You can now search for other phrases you think would've been in the document. That should narrow it down to just a few.
Clumsy? YES. Does it work? Yes.
This is based on my personal experience and my distaste for writing a program to solve one little problem. Just use resources you have.

Trying to run it from the CLI emulator will make no difference unless you use a command PARAMETER. It will still call for the PC to be shut down and restarted before running on the boot partition.have a look in the events viewer LOG>admin TOOLS...it should be listed under winlog?

I have 2 "not new" pcs (A & B) running WIN XP PRO SP3.  I have been running Outlook Express (OE) for years.

Running Outlook Express (OE) on pcB for email ADDR Cat does a "move" of the Cat emails from the server to my OE folders of pcB.

Subsequently, running OE on PCA for Cat shows there are no new emails to download from the server.

Usually, I do all my email work on pcA and the emails reside in the various OE folders of pcA's HDD.

How can I move the downloaded emails stored in pcB folders to pcA folders so they are all together on one pc?

I have identified the OE folder with the Inbox.dbx and all the .dbx files in both pcs. Each pc stores the .dbx files in it's own OE folder and the location of the OE folder is different in each pc.

How can I merge the two Inbox.dbx files (one from pcA and the other from pcB) into one Input.dbx on pc A?
Here is a google hit with INFO on this ... you will want to backup each systems dbx file and save them on say a thumb drive so that you dont destroy your data by accident and can restore from EXPORT if need be. Be sure to place one of the dbx files into a folder such as PC1 and the other in PC2 to keep the one system from overwriting the other systems dbx file on the thumb drive etc.

Environ:

35 identical Windows XP systems without SP2 but with all other UPDATES loggin into Windows 2003.  The systems are re-imaged on a bi-weekly basis.

Problem:

Occasionally random systems will lose thier SID or be unable to log into the domain.   The only fix so far has been to remove the system from the domain (both client and SERVER side) and re-add it.  This FIXES the problem until the system is re-imaged.  Someitmes imaging the system again will fix the problem too.

I have a problem - i have a pc with cd-ROM unit  (but comuter bios doesn't support booting from cd rom). I would like to boot a linux program with a dos startup discette so the stuff goes like this:

- Start computer with MSDOS startup discette in floppy
- Computer starts MS-DOS normaly
- Then some ???program??? starts CD-ROM program like it was started from the startup (but this cdrom has Linux CD)

The question i have is about our home network,  i have 2 xp machines that will log on to the  server but if i want to use any resourse on the the network from these machines they insist on having me putting in another password.

little bit of background, server running win2000, 1 CLIENT running win 2000 prof wkstn, 2 clients running xp prof, lappy running winnt 4.0 workstn.

When all systems are on and LOGGED in as administrator user i get the following results

win2000 server can network browse all other computers and look into all shared directories on all computers on the network. ok

win 2000 client can network browse all other computers and look into all shared directories on all computers on the network. ok

win xp client 1 can network browse win 2000 server and itself, if try to browse win2000 workstn or the other xp client, after a short timeout it asks for user name and password, (it has to be a different user account to what originally logged on as) once this is done i can browse all shared directories on all computers.

win xp client 2 can only browse itself, until i put in username and password then i can network browse, but i have to put in password for each pc.

All pc's are in the same domain and ip's are all in the same range. I think the problem is a user name authentication problem on the xp machines but im not sure where to start in the process to sort. i have tried and then re-tried the JOIN domain wizzard which appears to work but doesnt .

You're logging into domain as administrator, or are you accessing the system with local accounts?

If you're logging in as the DOMAIN administrator and are unable to browse the other systems then you've got a domain setup problem.  Likely the other systems don't have COMPUTER accounts or aren't members of the domain.

If you're logging onto the accounts locally then you have to use the local administrator account of the other machine to attach.  Kind of confusing sounding, so let me try with an example.

System one, not in domain, has the following password:  PASSWORD

System two, not in domain, has the following password: WORDPASS

You log in as administrator in system one, then try to access the C-drive on system two.  Windows will send your current authentication information to system two, and you are denied access because you password is incorrect.

Try this:  Log into system two as [email protected] with the System 2 password.

Or, change all of your account local admin passwords to the same thing (not really smart).  Or, ensure they're members of the domain, and log in with the DOMAIN admin account.thanks 4 reply welby

all accounts on my domain have been generated on server none are local (except admin account u have to do when u install)

when i say ive logged on to all machines as admin it is an account i have created that is a member of the admin group on the server.

i have just created a "new" account on the server and just made a user, all the shares have been setup for all users. i have logged on to all machines and it appears to be similar to above.

win2000 server can SEE all
win2000 pro client can see all
win xp clients can see server  but not each other until i put in another user name /password

1- I always receive the message "machine debug manager" has encountered a problem and needs to close", but without a shutdown countdown.
I had previously had problems with WORMS, but downloaded all removal tools and it finds nothing now. i still got two shutdown countdowns at times. Any idea?

2- When i try to shut down, it always says "Blnaho32.exe didnt end and i have to click end now and wait for it. What is this program and how do i cure that?

Sorry about the other thread i opened, it gave me an invalid name page so i reposted not knowing the 1st had been posted.
I did run the blaster and other romval tools, gave nothing. I had run stinger and it detected the dumaru worm, but problems continued even when stinger later didnt DETECT anything.
As for the Blnaho32.exe, its in the windows system32 folder, i clicked properties and it says it was created july31 2004 and its an application, nothing more.
Plus now when im surfing the web i often get redirected to search engines even when i post valid pages, a friend of mine had the same problem and just formatted.
Should i do the same?Not unless you are going to take precautions. As in immediatly install the latest security updates, virus scanner, firewall and whatever else may help you secure your privacy and computer. (Refer to the Viruses  & Spyware section)

If you decide not to do so, but still format, you can start over again in a few months. Or weeks.

You can also try to fix your system, but if you have no files you want saved and donot mind reinstalling Windows, formatting is usually a very good option.I had the same problem.   I went to system restore and disabled it.   I shutdown my computer.   When I restarted it, I went back and it was gone.  I have found a lot of trojans, worms, etc. attach to system restore.  By disabling system restore, then  shutting down, all restore is gone.  Just be sure to enable your system restore when it re-boots.  If all systems seem to be corrected then enable your system restore and set a restore point.  I have ridded systems this way.  

This is one reason I use McAfee online virus protection.  It is just 2.95 per month and an update comes in about every other day.  I dont' have to go look for updates or patches.  

What I have suggested you do is not a major technical computer deal, so it won't hurt to try.

ThissleI understand Microsoft will not automatically down load SP 2 now until sometime in April 05.  Wouldn't make sense to wait as the bugs should be out by then?DJannone....Re the auto updates .....what I have read is that because of the huge demand put on MicroSofts update servers that they have suspended the auto update feature and are controlling the release.......But you can still go to the update site and let the system scan finish and then select the express download and you can still get it ........Where did you read that it wouldnt be available until April of 2005 ?

dl65  Can't remember where I SAW the information as I read so much each day, but I saw it somewhere.  IF I remember the article I'll pass it on.  Have a current copy of your system partition on cd's or on another paritition using Image For Dos. That way you can quickly do a restore with a know good system and be on your way...

I was just wondering what to type in command PROMPT to find out when someone is connected to me...to get there ip adresses?Well, netstat.exe run from the command prompt will show you what open connections you have, and the machine names or IPs associated.  If you only get a machine name you can TRY tracert to determine the IP.

I am certain the videocard drivers will resolve your resolution and colour problem. However, I am not too certain if reinstalling mouse drivers will help fix the mouse problem.

What scanners have you USED? What program were you opening?i used mcafee virus scan and i was updating my aol instant MESSANGER....
how much of a problem would it be to reinstall both of those?I heard many bad things about AOL... You may wish to switch providers if that is possible.

As for reinstalling mouse or videocard drivers. Not very hard, but having a mouse to install either of them does make life easier. For a moment. You may manage by using only the keyboard, though.

Did you see if safe-mode works? Perhaps you are able to use your mouse there.i have been using aol for a long time now (not the service... just instant messanger).. i was going to try to run it in safe mode, but i forgot how to do it and it slipped my mind... I have the 3 system recovery CDs to do this with, but can't find my instructions anywhere! I have done it before, but can't remember how I did it!

PS-Hope this is in the right FORUM...! If the computer is still working well why not just clean off all the stuff you had on it and give it to her? It seems like a lot less trouble. As it turned out, I managed to do it! YAY! Not bad for someone so crummy with a pc!
I wanted her to have a pc with no left over junk at all on it. No old file bits etc.
Now all she needs is a monitor and some speakers.
She just got married last Saturday and she and her hubby gave their laptop to her parents (my sister & bro-in-law) b/c of everything her folks had done for them and gave them. So they have no pc at all. My old one is nothing to brag about, but it can still be USED to surf the web and if they add a printer, do some stuff like print coupons, etc.

If it is XP, it must be a very old computer. If it is not a laptop, you can use the monitor, keyboard and mouse over again with a refurbished computer of a similar model and make. The cost is possibly less than having a technician diagnosis and repair a major component. Plus you would GET a certified version of a newer Operating System. Perhaps Windows 7 Home version.
Just an idea.

Hi Guys.  Great forum. My daughter bought one those $1000 machines that are sold at Best Buy (I know, mistake #1) and has somehow LOST a part of her operating system while removing/deleting programs. The computer will not boot up now.  She also has lost her XP Home Edition CD (Aren't KIDS great?).  If I make a system disk can I use my XP Pro cd to replace her missing files?  I'm not very good at this sort of thing, but I remember once getting into a Boot menu and running some DOS commands like Fixboot and/or fixmbr.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.I think that will cause more problems. Windows XP Pro has some (system) functions that XP Home does not have.

Well today when typing up an invoice the cat decided to jump up and land on my keyboard as I was in that program.    The windows key I believe got bumped because it brought me out of program to desktop but didnt end the program, and then "My Computer" was added as a side bar to the left side of the SCREEN with drives etc. I quickly got the cat off the keyboard, but was trying to figure out how to remove/disable this.

I thought maybe it was a bug or something and so I rebooted, but upon reboot its back 

The only option I see is to autohide with a check box or not. Well this hides it off to the left but when the mouse goes to the far left it pops back out.

Also found out how the cat did this. My computer must have been selected after the cat closed out the invoice program and mouse left click was held down maybe by me, and my computer moved slightly to the left which enabled this to appear like it did.

I have searched and searched on that web site you gave me to find out how to change the email client from Microsoft outlook to my Hotmail inbox when I right click on Windows Messenger.  I found exactly nothing to explain that to me.  
Until I downloaded SP2, when I right clicked on Windows Messenger it would take me to my Hotmail Inbox, since the DOWNLOAD it takes me to Microsoft Outlook of which I have no account and don't want an account.  I need to learn how to change Windows Messenger to log into my Hotmail Inbox again and have SEARCH like everywhere for the information to no avail.

The following error OCCURRED on a Windows 2000 machine that was currently working quite well  --

Help please
1.   When the machine is switched it GOES on to start Windows but then it just displays a black screen and the cursor and nothing else! I can start Windows in Safe Mode and all seems OK.
2.   What I have tried before the above occurred is to uninstall Comodo Free Firewall but there is no uninstall button in Control Panel > ADD/Remove Programs! Comodo Firewall is now corrupted and cannot reinstall as it says it is already installed
3.   I have run Malwarebytes which only found 3 PUP which were quarantined.
4.   I have run Vipre Rescue, which found and cleaned one Trojan “Win32.Generic!BT”, remnants of Babylon and Conduit tool bar remnants.
Any ideas on how to uninstall Comodo Free Firewall?
I’m puzzled why when Windows XP runs in normal mode it only displays a black screen and cursor but in Safe mode I can see the desktop?   
When booted to safe mode check in Device Manager...any Yellow !!'s ? ?Boot to safe mode. Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem REAPPEARS and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.

After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a SERVICE go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/startup_cpl.html) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.Thanks guys for your help.

Allan, I have run XP in Safe Mode "selective startup" (unchecked all items) and rebooted but the problem still occurs  Well, the fact that you can boot to safe mode and not to regular mode would indicate a faulty driver or process, but if a selective startup (which disables all 3rd party drivers & processes) doesn't work the only other thing I can think of is a repair install. Perhaps someone else will have another thought, but if you want to run a repair install here are the instructions:

cheers davieShould you decide to alter partitions, all information will be erased.It certainly is. Just take all of your data off drives D, E & F and then delete all three.

You KEEP the Extended Partition and make just the One drive D: within it and then you can re-boot and FORMAT it from the C: drive.

Your C: drive seems to be a bit BIG do you really need more than 8Gb?

If not, then use Partition Magic and let it do all of the changes for you.

With PM, and provided you have enough free-space you could MOVE data from drive E: to drive D: delete drive E: and make drive D: bigger. (60Gb)

Drive F: will now change its drive letter to E:

You should then be able to move data from drive E: (again, because of the drive letter change) to drive D: and make drive D: bigger again. (90Gb)

You should then be able to shrink drive C: down to a reasonable size to suite your OS and the need to update. (Say 8Gb) and then increase the size of drive D: by a further 22Gb to 112Gb.

When you have shrunk the C: drive I would take the precaution of making a drive image of your installation on several CDRs (NOT CD-RWs!!!) so you can do a quick restore if you ever have to.

I used to be able to "view THUMBNAILS" in Windows explorer through the "view" tab and or by right clicking in the folder.
Now the only options I have are: Large Icons, Small Icons, List and Details.

I experimented with Bsafe online and found out it was just a popup BLOCKER gone beserk! hehheh but its fixed now!I recommend either Sygate Personal Firewall or Free ZoneAlarm as a firewall. I never heard of 'Bsafe' and I have never seen it either. You can turn off the SP2 Firewall unless you have no problem with it.

As for a pop-up blocker.. Why not use
Mozilla Firefox a browser with a built-in pop-up blocker.

I believe SP2 also provides Internet EXPLORER with a pop-up blocker.

I recently had a STOP (bsod 0*7b) error I couldn't fix so a friend installed another XP operating system on my computer(a vintage 2000 model with on board Intel 740 graphics-5.1.2001.0 driver). Now my resolution won't go above minimum (740*480) with 4 bit color. Monitor is an AOpen A70PF. Slide control and color change but they go right back after hitting apply. Device MANAGER shows no PROBLEMS (except AVC device which has a yellow !) No changes except OS. One other weird thing -I can only get the let half (from top to bottom) of a page on Google+! Please help! You need XP drivers re-installed for that PC...chipset drivers 1st...re-boot...then install all others.
In your case it's the Video driver...not a driver monitor...THANKS but I'm still not 100% clear. Chipset drivers for the Intel 740? How many "other" drivers do I need? Can I get them from Intel-how do I identify them all-how can I be sure I have everything I need? Why aren't they a part of the OS? Will I need any other drivers for other functions? Enough QUESTIONS?As PATIO said, get the specific set of drivers fro that motherboard. Don't think about the monitor. Windows will install a generic driver for the monitor. You must have the full set of drivers for that motherboard. Just getting some drivers from Intel is not enough. Even motherboards that  are almost the same are not.

Example. I had a Dell 745. I go  to the Dell web site and find the list of drivers for that model. I might see there is also a list for a 755 model. But that will not do. The two models are very similar, but I can not interchange the drivers. Furthermore, that earlier model requires five downloads for Windows XP.

You have to get drives specific to the motherboard.

All the necessary drivers will be at the MBoard manuf. site...

Hi, I have been experimenting with having a dual boot xp HOME on the same hard drive to see if I can separate the two but apparently MICROSOFT does not want this.
If you have two xp systems on the same hd they are joined at the hip by microsoft.

I have a problem with trying to INSTALL software - when I click on the "setup.exe" file i get an error message:

I am not sure what the problem is. The applications I am trying to install all run ok on XP HOME, but not on my new laptop running XP pro. They are fairly recent programs (IE not OLD software).

Check all audio applications; Win Media Player, Roxio, Nero, etc. One can sometimes affect others, it has on my xp machine.   Oh yeah, see if you can check the settings in his games, another possibility. BTW, it was roxio that over-rode the destop settings.

Am facing a doozie here. Am comfortably PC literate. OK. SYSTEM: Winxp Pro SP3 IE8; install disc Winxp Pro SP1 version 2002. Was simply setting up network connection through network wizard; text BOX advises reboot for changes to take effect, rebooted, and Good Grief, the system has mysteriously materialized a boot password box with my USERNAME and a password from another world. TRIED OPHCrack, OFFLINE NT Pass/Reg, to no avail. There is no hidden administrator; at password box screen, will not recognize CNTRL+ALT+DEL (2). Can access DOS through install disc repair feature. DOS does not recognize CMD (not in list 'help'). Finally cleared CMOS (jumper), but the boot password box is as alive as ever. Bill's boondoggle is now my nightmare. Am locked out of my computer, clueless. *censored*?

Is this a locked out system due to the Windows Logon Credentials or are you met with this right at boot of the system in which its a BIOS System Lock Password?

Big Story cut way short >>>  in the past I had a similar problem computer if this is a Windows Authentication Problem after clean build.

Thinking I did something wrong somehow, I blew away Windows XP and installed clean again. Same exact problem came back. In the end, the problem was the Hard Drive was messed up causing Windows XP to act up. I ran the HDD test utility from seagate on this system and the drive had problems. I replaced the 12GB HDD with a 20GB HDD and the problem was fixed.

Things I tried prior to HDD diagnostic was:

Different Windows XP install Disc = No Change
Different CD ROM = No Change

Swapping out the damaged 12GB HDD was the fix for me.Perhaps something here will help.

I made an iso from my dell xp pro sp1a cd.

They are all running the Dell OEM XP SP-1 and to my knowledge, all of the material on the Dell CD was needed for the installation. There is a holder labeled Dell, which contains the drivers and the setup files for hardware commonly used on Dell machines. In addition to that, it was necessary to download more updated drivers from the Dell website to get each machine working properly.
So, based on my personal experience I would say there is no point in trying to remove any of the Dell software from the OEM CD provided by Dell.
As you already know, support of Windows XP is over. With the exception of some security updates, Microsoft has abandoned Windows XP. This already has had an impact on both users and developers who use any other Microsoft products. For example, the Microsoft .NET libraries continue to be updated and are leaving XP behind. This means that some programs that were developed with the.NET libraries and runtime packages will not update correctly on an XP machine at some time in the future.
What I am trying to say is that I have to use Windows XP because of my difficulty in adapting to the numerous versions of Windows. OTHERWISE, I am firmly convinced that XP is virtually dead and has no future.

I'm brand new to this forum, so heres my FIRST problem.
I have downloaded several updates and such, and they have been saved as >exe>pzp files. So far I haven't FIGURED out what OPENS them.   . Thanks.If you wish to help us in the future, you will have to be more SPECIFIC. What kind of updates are you referring to? Windows updates? They should be installed automatically whilst downloading.
