Solve : Windows 7 Hangs? |
Answer» Installing windows 7 RC (7100) 32-Bit on a blank HDD Toshiba Satellite M40 (Intel Centrino, NVIDIA Graphics) laptop is not going well. type "Ren pcmcia.sys pcmcia.bak" WOW! Finally, the ONLY permanent solution to this annoying classpnp.sys problem that has plagued Microsoft Windows since Windows Vista! Thank you so very much.Remember that renaming classpnp will prevent access to SCSI-based devices on that machine in the future, and the issues preventing it from working properly are more than likely not something that will just "go away" by renaming a file.Hi from Greece, I found the solution MOST helpfull, after spending an entire workday searching for what could be wrong. It worked like a charm, BUT the problem returned as soon as I installed updates! I had to rerun the cure and then use AutoRuns from Sysinternals Suite to disable the specific driver. So far, after two more update sets, all work well! Thank you all for your help! |

Solve : Win XP Home poor display? |
Answer» To check the display, I have win xp home (with poor display) and installed win xp pro (good display) Is the "vga device driver" in the "system folder" the Nvidia Adapter driver ??No. I don't even know what you are referring to. you don't Install drivers by randomly copying files to system folders. What is your graphics adapter? Is this a laptop? Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 26, 2014, 09:58:39 PM What do you call a 'poor display'? Fuzzy? Poor color?I'm almost positive that the effect they are seeing is that the XP Home machine does not have proper drivers installed. Though it could be as simple as changing the resolution, now that I think of it. Item 1. The OS (both) are on a Dell Dimension 2350. Item 2. The OS for both was installed with the original MS disk Item 3. The Video controller is Nvidia GeForce 4000 Item 4. Both OS have the drivers wiavideo.dll (sys32) and vga device driver (sys folder) - - I agree with you. I think it is a driver, but which one ?? - - - thank you for your time and help any addition help will be appreciated falcon Quote from: navyfalcon on April 26, 2014, 11:11:35 PM Item 3. The Video controller is Nvidia GeForce 4000Than the Driver SOFTWARE is available here Quote Item 4. Both OS have the drivers wiavideo.dll (sys32) and vga device driver (sys folder) wiavideo is not a video Driver. it is used for acquiring video data from a digital camcorder (Windows Image Acquisition for Video). vga.drv is the default driver that Windows will use if no other driver is installed. I downloaded drivers from this site http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_182.65 I hope it is the correct site and drivers - - - falconI copied and pasted the driver into the system folder (not system32) No joy. No change in the display. Is there a procedure to set up the driver for the display or did I GET the wrong driver ?? - - - Thank you again for the help falconThe driver you installed is not the correct driver. The driver you downloaded is for Quadro Cards, which are high-end Workstation Display Cards. You want the one that I linked (NVidia Forceware). You don't copy files into system32. You run the downloaded program. it is an Installer. The drivers should actually come from Dell. Dell's are finicky like that. Quote from: patio on April 27, 2014, 09:25:27 PM The drivers should actually come from Dell. The Nvidia is added-on after purchase and was not stock with the machine. The Dell support page doesn't list any NVidia drivers for that model. That said, it actually BRINGS up a good question, which is whether the Geforce 4000 is in both machines, and if not, which machine it is in. Though I'm also curious how they managed to get from the link I provided for Forceware 90 to a download for NVidia Quadro drivers. That must have been some adventure. Easy trip: To do the automatic search requires java and I have difficulty downloading a java version for win xp home. So I went to Nvidia site and tried for a match. This is an old video card and the system is old. I think my best bet is to somehow get the drivers from win xp pro and put them in win xp home. - - - How can I perform this operation so the drivers will install - - - again, thank you for your patience and help - - - falcon |

Solve : System Recovery Hangs -Dammm SP2? |
Answer» HI! My present problem - I ran a System Recovery both from the disk and from the partition and in both cases all goes well, I get to restart into user partition, windows boots and when it comes to the screen where I click finish the comp hangs. Sometimes it continued working other times just froze there. Is there something I am not doing or can do different? I tried f8 during boot up and tried to start in safe mode. I got the message that the Windows\system32\config\system was corrupt or missing and to run setup again. My last backup was in June and I would like to know how to get my data off the hard drive before I do a complete wipe. Are there any programs that I could download that could bypass bootup and read the hard drive directly or exaclty how does one get data off a drive that is not working? How did this all start you ask? Installed SP2 - changed security settings in OE and IE, turned off firewall and AU. Links not working in OE, Windows Media and IE shortcuts to desktop Checked regserv dlls and registry entries and tried numerous other fixes Decided to do a System Restore back to just after installing SP2 to make sure that was indeed the problem System Restore froze up and had to do a manual reboot. System would not start Used Backup Cd to do a system recovery and that brings me to the above problem. Give me your best shot, I have nothing to loose now as I am heading for a complete reinstal anyway. :-/Beamuse Computer Info: HOME network and behind a Dlink DI624 router with an advanced firewall. Solve : Whirring in a Cycle...? |

Answer» So my wife's computer is now no LONGER opening anything or if it does, it takes forever. Instead after it boots up it, you try to open a file, etc. and instead of doing it, it will "whir" in a cycle over and over like it is trying to do something but nothiing ever happens. Is it beyond repair? or should I go to the expense of paying for an "EXPERT" to look at it? She is very frustrated (understandable). What is make/model of computer and do you still have SYSTEM recovery disc's for it?May I offer a suggestion? |

Solve : Win XP not Booting Up? |
Answer» HI, Since yesterday I have been facing issues with my desktop of not booting up. It remains stuck at Windows XP boot up screen. The day before I had shut down the PC normally. What I have tried; 1) Have tried booting up in the Safe Mode & Last Known Good Configuration as well but no luck. On selecting Safe Mode, it loads some of the files up till WINDOWS/System32/Drivers/aswRvrt.sys & then again shows up the same message again giving options of Safe Mode/ Last Known Good Configuration & Start Windows Normally. 2) Removed both the RAM modules one by one & boot up, but STILL the same error. Pls assist resolving the issue. Desktop Confirguration: OS: Windows XP Pro SP3 CPU: AMD Athlon II X4 635 MB: Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H RAM: 2 x 2GB Kingston DDR3 1333MHz HDD: Western Digital Caviar Green 1TBDo you have your XP CD ? ?Yes, I have. Have googled around & Avast AV seems to be cause of aswRvrt.sys GETTING stuck at boot up.Uninstall Avast and see what happens... XP Repair Install... I suggest reading it thru and printing out a reference copy before starting... Done properly all your data and apps will be intact...1 mistake and all will be gone ...but you'll have a FRESH XP install.Booted with XP CD & used FIXBOOT from Recovery Console and was able to boot back. Uninstalled Avast on startup. Tried a reboot & the PC rebooted. Now which AV should I install? AVG or re-install Avast?Re-install Avast... Also add MalwareBytes and SuperAnti-Spyware to your arsenal. Only run 1 scan at a time... |

Solve : Will XP Pro fix an XP Home Edition Problem?? |
Answer» Hi Guys. Great forum. My daughter bought one those $1000 machines that are sold at Best Buy (I know, mistake #1) and has somehow LOST a part of her operating system while removing/deleting programs. The computer will not boot up now. She also has lost her XP Home Edition CD (Aren't KIDS great?). If I make a system disk can I use my XP Pro cd to replace her missing files? I'm not very good at this sort of thing, but I remember once getting into a Boot menu and running some DOS commands like Fixboot and/or fixmbr. Any help would be greatly appreciated.I think that will cause more problems. Windows XP Pro has some (system) functions that XP Home does not have. |

Solve : Trying to remove a my computer sidebar? |
Answer» Well today when typing up an invoice the cat decided to jump up and land on my keyboard as I was in that program. The windows key I believe got bumped because it brought me out of program to desktop but didnt end the program, and then "My Computer" was added as a side bar to the left side of the SCREEN with drives etc. I quickly got the cat off the keyboard, but was trying to figure out how to remove/disable this. They should have listed it as the "My Cat" toolbar from Day One... LOL So I decided to post the fix in case anyone else ever has this happen, either due to a cat or accidental dragging of the My Computer to the left side like what appeared to happen here through the assistance of a cat. Fix = Right-Click on white area in the ToolBar , then select Toolbars, and then uncheck My Computer from the list. [recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Interestingly the ability to dock folders to the side of the desktop was a rogue feature. Thanks for the interesting read BC ... I found this the most interesting.. Quote We strongly suspect that it was another rogue feature added by a specific developer who had a history of slipping in rogue features. With how many people work on the code, you would think that there would be not just a single developer who slipped in a feature, but that the feature would be a small group that worked on code. With all the OVERLAP you would think that slipping anything in unnoticed etc would be next to impossible, so I would think that it would be not exactly slipped in with so many people working on an OS at Microsoft unless they have loose content control. Also a list of all the rogue features that this "developer" slipped in would be interesting. Quote from: DaveLembke on May 13, 2014, 08:16:15 PM With how many people work on the code, you would think that there would be not just a single developer who slipped in a feature, but that the feature would be a small group that worked on code. Not really. Most big source codebases are managed at multiple levels. Eg, there will be one group working on some high-level new feature, another working on another, etc. But they don't commit to the same source code repository, rather they commit to branches. So, say there is group A and Group B working on adding their own new addition with Windows 7. When Group A starts, they basically take a copy of the current Master Branch of the Source code- in whatever state it happens to be in- and then make their changes. Group B does the same when they start. Changes made by Group A will not be visible in the source control repository that Group B works in, nor vice versa. When the features are in an appropriate shape to be added into the main trunk build, they merge their branch; eg. when Group A's feature is READY to be integrated they Merge their Branched repository with the new feature into the main one. This usually involves resolving conflicts where other changes have changes files that the branch has that cannot be resolved automatically. It would be trivial to slip in a rogue feature when working in one of those groups, because it will only be visible code-wise to those working in that smaller group. It's also not like Programmers make a habit of randomy perusing commit logs unless it happens to be relevant to what they are doing. |

Solve : dual boot or just use accounts?? |
Answer» Hi, I have been experimenting with having a dual boot xp HOME on the same hard drive to see if I can separate the two but apparently MICROSOFT does not want this. What is the difference between having a dual boot with two xp's verses just using accounts? Dual boot: Two operating systems with different accounts per OS Accounts: You use different accounts to access the same Operating System you seem to having loads of PROBLEMS with dual booting for some reason....maybe another option is to buy another hard drive and use it has a slave....Hi, The main reason I am experiementing with dual booting is basically economic. I could of course buy two pc's and it would be a done DEAL. I could ALSO get two HD's. I know that user accounts are on the same os. It seems that there is, in terms of ms xp, no difference between user accounts and dual booting two xp systems on the same hd. Dual booting joins the two xp systems at the hip and you cannot separate them and have the setup live. Any other insight into this issue will be greatly appreciated. |

If they are compressed files, you will need a UTILITY to decompress them. Using IE won't make ONE iota of difference.Winrar and WINZIP are the most commonly used compressing tools. |

Solve : OEM xp question? |
Answer» I made an iso from my dell xp pro sp1a cd. was wondering is it also that oem are also deadDo not expect a company like Asus, Dell Gateway or HP to continue to help you with older versions of software. But companies like IBM and Oracle may make exceptions. As for Windows XP, drives for XP can still be FOUND on the web sites of the major makers. But trying to buy an OEM copy of Windows XP may be hard to do. The EULA from Microsoft extends to OEM versions also. Microsoft allows Windows XP to be sold with used hardware. This allows users to recover their investment in hardware that is not longer wanted. But the user can not have unbundled the Windows XP OEM CD from the hardware. It has to be sold with at least part of the used hardware. Here is a picture: Note to moderator. This is not an offer to sell anything. This is legitimate. However, the Dell CD will only work on a Dell PC that was licensed for XP. It will not work on ANOTHER PC. And no, it is not one of my listings. I will never sell my old Dell OEM CDs. On that note...Topic Closed. |
