Please helpp! I'm trying to change my Jpg file icon but it says "you have customized files with extension'Jpg." To restore these files to their DEFAULT type (ACDsee 9.0 JPEg Image), CLICK restore. I downloaded a pro acdsee and want to make that my default then change the icon for it but i cant.!!!Did you try right-clicking - Properties - Opens with (General tab) - Change then choose with the specified programs already? Why is this important to the OP?
 You can always open a file with your favorite editor or viewer regardless of the association or icon. Icons are visual aids. That's all.

I was running WindowsXP Professional on my Compaq DeskproPIII 733 Mhz computer. A few days back the system was unable to start. I formatted the hard disk. I'm not familiar with this one (I'm running Win2K), but found in some searching that this can be caused by defective RAM, either the system RAM or Video RAM. ALSO found this was an issue with some nVidia cards, and even a bad network card. I'd try changing some of these ITEMS if an extra video card is available. You can remove any unnecessary cards from the system. If you have multiple sticks of RAM, try reloading XP with just one stick, then the other if that doesn't work, to determine if it is a bad stick of the stuff.

There's also a troubleshooting page in the Microsoft Knowledgebase for this. It's listed for Windows 2000, and MS says somewhere that this is usually only a Windows 2000 error, but there's plenty of XP users with posts on this one in other forums.

I'm having trouble TRYING to work out a formula on Microsoft excel.

In column two, row 3 I need to know:

If figure in column one, row 3 Is less than 1.00 = 2, if more than 1.00 but less than 2.00 = 3, if        more than 2.00 but less than 3.00 = 4 and if more than 3.00 = 13.

Does this make sense to anyone?

I just joined.  I am a senior lady, and self taught [such as it is], on the computer.  I would call myself familiar with computer, but certainly needing to know more. 
I do almost everything on my museum piece computer [runs windows xp prof], while my new one with windows 7 sits IDLE.  I totally prefer my old guy. 
This morning when I went to run my defrag program it informed me that I only have 10% of real space left.  Had no idea.  In past years I ran Malware bytes antimalware, but when they updated it it wouldn't load properly on my machine and I tried everything.  Tried over and over to work with their terribly bad customer service, which is by email only, to no avail.  Downloaded Avast and have been happy and VIRUS free with it for a good while.  However have been concerned with the large amount of updates it puts on my computer daily, as I watch my space getting smaller and smaller.  Will have to do something for sure.  Can anyone suggest a good anti-virus/spyware program that is low on bytes, I guess you'd say?

Tap the F8 key as the computer is starting. This will open the advanced startup options. At that screen choose Disable Automatic RESTART on System Failure.

See if that will stop it from rebooting and give you an error message. If you can get an error message, post it in your next reply. Post the entire error message.the error message was

As far as updates i've done a few in the last week including a directX upgrade from DX9.0a to DX9.0b. but the most recent was today when I installed the drivers for my keyboard to make the upper programable buttons work. as for when the problem started I'm not quite sure, it's been i'd say at least a week since I tried to create a new folder.

but seeing i can't create a new folder in windows explorer either and do not even have the option to add a folder creating button in the customize section, i'd say it a windows problem? i was hoping it was just a setting i accidently turned off somewhere.

as for m$ updates i'm with you there lol but i had to upgrade DX for Everquest (an online game I PLAY) which is more of a benchmarking progam then a game sometimes lolvaxure.....I have been trying to recreate your issue here ....with no luck....How about uninstalling the keyboard updates you made today ( temporarily ) and see if you can right click on the desktop and see the new folder option.
The other THING ...you say you cant create a new folder in Internet explorer....( I cant do that either ...unless I save it to say desktop and then click on the icon and I have the option of making a new folder.....Can you not click on my computer .....pick say C drive ...click on it and when the exporer window opens to display the conents
right click in any CLEAR space and see the option to make a new folder ?

but from what I see in there it looks Nvidia related.

That is something else i've had issues with this week trying to get my game to work.  I was refering to older driver versions that didn't help so went back to the latest drivers. all done through safe mode of course but i'll try dropping back a version and see what happens.

Also in answer to your question dl65 no i can't get a new folder from an empty area off the C drive like your asking but i will go ahead and uninstall the keyboard drivers as well

ok added the new registry entry but it didn't help, also removed the keyboard drivers but it didn't work. Then I rebooted in safemode and I still don't get the "new" menu there either?

Is there a Hotkey for creating a new folder? maybe i can try and see if that worksvaxure.....I just came across this .....it seems to be related.....
I've seen the same thing in ME - in fact, it just happened again. From my recollection, it's from a corrupt registry key... PROBABLY from an improperly installed video card.


You can either do it manually using regedit, or use a patch - one can be found at:

Procedure:

1) Go to the start menu, run 'regedit' (minus quote marks), then go to 'file', 'export', and find a place to put the backup. Always a good idea.

2) Download the patch above, unzip, and double-click the registry file inside, and it'll be patched. Try creating a new folder then.

I run my computer off of windows xp and anytime I try to install a program it succeeds in saving the file to my desktop, but when I click on the file to install it, it gives me this error MESSAGE: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item."

When I click START > PROGRAMS, I used to have 30 to 40 folders and programs listed; now I only have 8.  All the programs are still available, I just have create shortcuts for my desktop, or go to Program Files and select the appropriate .EXE file.

Also, I've noticed that when I go to the Control Panel and click on Administrative Tools, the Administrative Tools window pops up, but it is empty.  I think the two problems are related.

What kind of viruses were you infected with?  I have XP Pro.  I had several viruses and worms.  Korgo was the main one.You MAY be able to repair your Windows XP by using the Window XP Pro CD as a bootdisk.

I donot know how else you would be able to replace the files.

The OS and computer work fine.  The symptoms described in my original post seem to be the only problems.
You will most likely not get your Start Folders back. They were created by the programs and are not NATIVE to Windows.

As for your Administrator functions, I donot see these in Xp Home. So I cannot quite help you with that.

But are you certain they have not been empty before?No, they have not always been empty.  I can still get to the tools, I just have to right click on My Computer, and all the functions are still available.if I were you I'd take a look at the repair option on your Windows XP Pro CD. Use it as a bootdisk by setting the CD-ROM as your first boot device in  the BIOS.

I'm Running XP on a Toshiba Qosmio G20-139 laptop. System was stable. Installed a HP C4480 3-in-1 PRINTER using original HP Installation disc for XP. The Install seemed to RUN OK with no error messages. After the required Reboot I noticed the computer was running unbelievably slow. Looking at Task Manager I saw the CPU at 100% useage and 85 (yes 85) running processes. A test on a similar Toshiba/XP laptop (without HP) showed a CPU usage of 5 to 20% and about 20 running processes. What on earth has happened? Although not technically crashed, the Toshiba is running so slow I doubt if I will be able to move any files to a safe harbour, such a USB Memory Stick. Can anybody suggest a way forward? I couldn't locate a HP un-install so I deleted the contents of the HP folder --but that didn't reduce the running processes one bit. What created and started up 85 processes?In task manager I'd identify what the process names are that are using up the CPU resources and list them here if you are unsure as to what they are. You should be able to kill the processes 1 by 1 for the ones that are unnecessary and eventually get your system back to a state where its not crippled.

Once you identify which process it is that is using the most resources of them all you can SET that service to manual vs automatic and this way the system doesnt run crippled, and then eventually remove the troubled service.

I'd suggest using the latest drivers available from HP instead of the original disk as for there may be a bug fix that prevents this issue from happening etc. Quote

Hey peeps. this is not a problem but i WOULD like to know how to remove something that is in My Computer. The part with all the DRIVES and everything.  i recently got this thing that i didnt have b4, its Nero Fast CD-Burning Plug-In and since My Computer is arranged in groups, its under Audio Devices. If you uninstall Nero, the Plug-in will most likely be removed as well. I believe you are asked to install the Plug-in on Nero install as well.

Problem is WinXP won’t boot. Here’s the specs:
Dell Inspiron 2200, WinXP Pro Sp2, Celeron M 1.4 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 200 GB HD, BIOS version A03 (03/31/2005)

I have a bootable WinXP CD.

What happened: Logged onto PC and desktop loaded normally but browser (Firefox) was not opening so I clicked Restart. The boot-up got to the WinXP logo then the screen went dark except for the backlight and there was a dash with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner, LIKE a DOS prompt. The PC tried to boot twice more and then froze at the dark screen. There was no error message. Oddly the num lock status light was on. I tried ESC, Enter, F2, F8, F12, space, typing—nothing changed. I tried restarting and pressing F8 at the Win logo, but that didn’t work.

I put in the WinXP CD and RESTARTED to the Win logo and pressed F12 to get into the start-up. I opened the Recovery Console and did chkdsk /r and chdsk /p and it said some ERRORS were found and fixed but STILL no boot-up. I tried fixboot and fixmbr, still nothing. I checked the boot.ini using  type c:\boot.ini  and it looks ok.

I have checked DOZENS of posts on many different forums about how to fix boot problems on the Inspiron 2200 and have about exhausted my ideas. Can anyone please suggest something else to troubleshoot before I give up and reload the OS? Thanks for reading this.


I'd swap out the HDD which is likely damaged, some damages can not be corrected through chkdsk.

I have tried to format a partition with WINDOWS 7 on the C: DRIVE ,( I

am trying to install XP on the Laptop which does not have a CD drive so

I have to use an external one)  and I am told that I cannot format a

partition with an O/S on it. Can you help,. I am getting the  errors

that are posted.
    I loaded Win XP and it started to install, during installation I was

told that these where missing

 ipcfg.xml
 osinfo.xml                            Also i386:  Which I think is the
 potscfg.xml                           main part of the O/S 
 pppcfg.xml

     So in the end I got a Fatal error notice.   I cannot get back to

the old partition to manage it because the XP install deleted the WIN7

O/S. so I am unable to shrink the partition with the old Win 7 on it.

Way more INFO is needed...PS...why does the laptop not have a CD drive ? ?I'm going to lock this thread. You've posted the same question at at least one other forum and are receiving help there. Your situation is very confusing and keeping active threads at multiple sites will only serve to confuse the issue (and us).

So this is new to me... I've had a lot of problems with XP over the years, but here is something that I've never encountered.

Due to Avast moving a number of system files (from the SYSTEM32 folder which cause a log in/out loop among other problems) I had to do a system repair using the XP install boot disk. After completing this I was able to get users going again. After a brief period of happiness, the User discovered that a commonly used program wasn't working. When I checked this out I found that the .BAT launcher was getting a "cannot find file '....exe'" error. I looked into this more and recently discovered that NONE of the .EXE files located in this particular directory can be used. Every one of them returns a "cannot find file" error even when double clicking. This is NOT the case in any other folder so far. The other files (.BAT and a number of custom extensions) work fine, but the .EXEs don't... :/

I've tried looking all over the registry and have not been able to find any problems. I ran "sfc /scannow" just to make sure that the system was still stable, and it checked out fine...

Another thing that I noticed, one of the programs' directories "dlc" is supposed to be located on C:\ root... (which it is) in doing a file search I discovered that there is ALSO a copy in the system32 folder!? This doesn't belong here at all, and it's not just a shared file name - it has(d) all the same files too...

If anyone can THINK of anything that might be helpful I'd really appreciate it. I'm at a LOSS of ideas, so anything is appreciated!

In Windows XP the norm is to put program EXE files in the Programs directory. Additional files would be place in  some place like Winndowsd32.
When you say BAT do you mean the LNK file?  That is the shortcut that resides in some place e start menu directory.

It started when i reinstalled system.I installed windows xp sp3,installed all drivers correctly.Then when i installed all the drivers i downloaded game called "League of Legends".It was UPDATING and at 1 moment pc restarted.When pc was on after that everytime i try to update it i get BSOD and pc restart after that,then i tried extracting something with winrar i got BSOD and restart again,i tried with 2 more games,same problem,installation starts and after few minutes BSOD POPS out.I got it only when i update,install,extract things,i am so confused i never got this kind of problem.

I've been trying to configure this digit ' (elision mark) into one of my keyboard keys because I cant input it using other methods in the program I'm wanting to use it.

I've tried using 3 different software that I've found on the net, but none would allow me to PASTE it into the program. And they wouldn't include the character in there "digit lists".

Anyway, any help would be great. Also, if its complicated to do, please explain in laymans terms lol. I'm really no good with this kind of stuff.

The original document I had copied the mark from came from the programs instruction .nfo file.

I need to use that mark in the program, not as typing it in, but using it to open a MENU. The program doesn't support text.

And the only way I can think of getting it to work is to assign the character to an unused key on my keyboard....... unless there are other ways to do it?You can use Alt + numpad (That you can lock with Numlock) to create icons such as ¿ and other  markings you donot use often.

What does it MEAN when you get an error message that says "LSA Shell (EXPORT Version) encountered a problem and needed to close."When does this error occur? What operating system are you USING? Can you tell what you have done in order to encounter this error?XP. I'm actually at work so it is not my pc. I suggest you scan for Spyware as well.

Does this error show during boot up? Or does it show once you ACCESS Windows? Does everything continue to function normally?

I suggest you update Windows XP.

I used to be able, in web page view, see a thumbnail
of an image file, (bmp and tif ANYWAY), in the left hand
panel just under the file info section.

Now, for some reason, that feature has gone away.
I can still pick thumbnail view and see thumbnails for
the icons for bmps, but what I had was the ability to have the file names
in a list, but when I clicked on one, it's image would pop
up in that left hand pane.

I can't remember how I got it to work that WAY; does anyone
know how to get that feature back?

 I have a window xp with the visual studio 05 installer but when I run it, the install goes fine until it get half way and stops and an error pops up. SAYING that I need a dll could not run. I have downlaod this same program with the same installer on a different computer, same version of windows. But these windows xp have the sp 1. I wander if that is the problem?

I had been having blue screen problems with my old Dell XP. The programs WhoCrashed and BlueScreenView implicated a few drivers of non-essential software as the culprits. I examined the drivers module in AutoRuns (by Sysinternals) and carefully selected non-essential software drivers for disabling of their autostart status by unchecking the box in AutoRuns. (I avoided hardware drivers, Microsoft drivers, and drivers for actual autostart programs.) Three times when I restarted after this limited driver-autostart disabling I got the STOP: 0X0000007B blue screen. I was in effect forced to use Last Known Good Configuration on the subsequent startups, and this restored all the autostarts I had disabled. To test what was going on, I shut down my system without disabling any driver autostarts, and the system started normally.

    I tried disabling via AutoRuns only two files in the system32\drivers folders that were implicated in previous blue screens : wrkrn.sys (associated with Webroot, which after expiration had continued on my system as an on-demand scanner) and vvbackd5.sys (associated with a FarStone program which I had not yet chosen to utilize). I got the STOP: 0X0000007B blue screen again. After this in my frustration I shredded wrkrn.sys and vvbackd5.sys.

    Really bad move. After this I continually get the STOP: 0X0000007B blue screen when I try to start the computer. On the next try I will get the menu that offers "Safe Mode" and "Last Known Good Configuration", etc., but those options lead only to more STOP: 0X0000007B blue screens. I had deleted those two drivers previously without problems, but it had been after moving them out of system32\drivers. (And of course, the drivers had been recreated.)

    I know it's academic at this point, but what do you think I could have done with those drivers without creating the mess I created? Maybe I should have just uninstalled the programs although I PREFERRED not to.

    I took my computer to one repairman, and he said it couldn't be fixed. I want more opinions.

    I have a new computer I will be setting up SOON, but I had really wanted to keep this one as a second computer to use for limited purposes, including substituting if the new one has to go to the repair shop.

    I also want to recover everything off the old Dell. The repairman said he didn't think I would be able to recover my Outlook Express emails. What do you think? I could set up a virtual XP on my new computer and possibly get my Outlook Express emails that way, I think.

    The repairman said I could use an IDE to USB adaptor to drag and drop files and folders from the old Dell XP to my new computer, although he doesn't think that will work for restoring Outlook Express emails. A good adaptor of this sort can be had for as little as $20 (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0063JN3WE/...p;linkCode=asn). Any advice about this procedure?

    I have Laplink PC Mover Ultimate. I called Laplink support late at night. The technician said he that in order to use Laplink PC Mover Ultimate in this situation I would have to fix my old computer first. He said he could help me do that, interestingly ENOUGH. But he said I would have to sign up for a year of iYogi support for my two computers at $299. Ouch! And that's more than double the subscription price at http://www.iyogi.net/.

    So do you think my old computer can be fixed? Any advice on any points raised here would be welcome.

Accessibility WIZARD hates me. 

Sometime in the past few months it stopped working. Some effort on my part indicates it is because of the updates. I installed a fresh copy of XP on another drive and did the unofficial SP4 updates, After that, the Wizard again stalls and it doer snot run. No error message. It lets me make a selection and then it just stalls. Have to use task manager to close it and it eigenstates some error report.
No BIG deal. I already had set the options I WANTED. Bu I just wanted totweak something. Can't run the Wizard again.
So, I give up.
But does this MATTER to anyone else but me?
DOERS anybody here use the XP Accessibility Wizard?

On monday I installed an xp security udpate. Starting that day, I have not been able to open files without the computer freezing. I can also not delete files, EVEN pics. Oh and I cant move them in other folders. I THOUGHT perhaps it was a virus, but the AVG scan comes up clean. Im not sure how to solve the problem.

Was it a update for SP2 or SP1 ( do you have SP2 installed yet ) ?

I posted about this a month or so ago and am still having problems so I thought I'd try again.

Because of pop-up problems, I downloaded Spybot.  After running the program for the first time and destroying the "contaminated" files, I turned my computer off.

When I turned it on again the next day and tried to run the programs on my desktop the following warning came up:



This happens with EVERY program, including Spybot.  The same warning comes up when I tried to remove the program and I cannot add any programs at all now.

I cannot go in and run the disk defrag or anything.  I can run Internet Explorer.  And other programs like Photoshop or Microsoft Word will work if I open files already saved on my computer using those programs.

Today I decided I would just reinstall Windows XP to see if that worked.  However my computer will not let me run the XP CD-Rom at all.  Is there another way to do this?  I tried uninstalling XP in SAFE Mode but the same warning comes up there too.

BUT.......Spybot creates a backup so if you remove something you shouldnt have........have you tried opening spybot and use the recover option ?

dl65  If you wish to format your computer you will have to set your CD-ROM drive as your first boot device. From there, you enter the Windows XP CD and press a key on start up. (It will notify you when to press the key)

Once you are there, you can install Windows XP. Before it allows you to, it will notify you that there are partitions/hard disks present that are not formatted. It will allow you to format using NTFS.

But before you do that,

Read through the help file that came with Spybot S&D (Assuming it still FUNCTIONS) and find a way to restore the files it deleted. (If it created backups.)

Did you TAMPER with the configuration before scanning? I donot believe Spybot S&D would remove important files.

I recommend that you scan for viruses and trojans as well.

This virus scanner is web based; Trend Micro - Free online virus scan and may work on your system.I can't do either of those things because that same warning comes up.  It won't let me Add/Remove in Safe Mode either.   :-/Raptor-

And nothing of Spybot's works now, unfortunately.Did you attempt to scan for viruses first using Micro Trend? It does not have to be installed.

You can set your CD-ROM as the first boot device by going into the BIOS during bootup.

I ran the scan and it came up with some Trojans.  The site said to "delete" them, so I did that.

I went into BIOS and then repaired Windows XP but only to reboot and come up with the exact same problems.

As I was repairing, the following message kept popping up:

Not with that exact program, but with a LOT of the ones running on my computer.  I'm assuming this has to do with the File Options problem as well.

I just canceled all of the warnings because it wouldn't allow me to open them in any program.  It went ahead and repaired XP though, even through all of these warnings.  Obviously it didn't repair it though or I wouldn't be having the same problems.

Is there anyway just to wipe out XP?  Like go back to how it was when I got the computer.  XP was loaded on it, of course.

I almost REINSTALLED it but I couldn't remember what partition I needed to use.  It's been a loooong time since I've done anything with installing operating systems.

I was wondering if general database text easy to read USING Diskedit? No. A database file has a  specific structure. Often not the same as a TXT file.
What database manager do you want to use?

if not when you turn on your computer the should be able to boot it from there.1) What is new or different since the last time everything WORKED properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?
2) Can you boot to safe mode?If your lucky you can fix this BIOS password issue by removing the CMOS battery and waiting a few minutes and reinstalling it or using the CMOS reset button or jumper on the main board.

The older systems could be reset through the CMOS battery trick, but if a new system the BIOS chip needs to be replaced with an unlocked chip or a circuitry hack has to be used shorting specific PINS to bypass it such as what my BROTHER had to do with a certain laptop model that he bought off of ebay and paid some guy $10 for the bios hack instructions on which specific pins to short intermittently during boot up in which timing of the short condition was critical to success of it.

Hi, I just had a QUESTION about my computer. Everytime I start it up, as soon as windows loads, i get an error message saying that explorer has crashed, even before anything on the desktop appears on the screen. So when i click close, the computer just sits there because there is nothing loaded. When I press ctrl+alt+del, there are no tasks running. So the only options i have are to CANCEL and let the computer sit there and do nothing, or shutdown or restart, and then it does the same thing over again everytime. I don't know if theres anything I can do about it since the computers getting PRETTY old, but i can't download any patches or anything like that, I mean it doesn't let me do anything at all even after explorer crashes. I had a program crash and shut off my computer. Now when I turn it on it looks like it's booting up and going to start windows XP then it goes to a message that tells me because of some type of failure the computer needs to be restarted. I then get the options of STARTING in safe mode, last configuration that worked or start windows NORMALLY, then it counts to 30 sec, then looks like it's going to start but then loops back to the message?  

It doesn't matter which I do choose, my system then loops and then takes me back to the same message.

Good ole tech support has the same ANSWER as always, use the restart disc WIPING everything out on the computer. :-/

I noticed this mysterious object on my desktop the other day. It was LOCATED down in the lower right hand corner. I can double-click it with no response and right-click but nothing happens. I can move it anywhere on my desktop. As you can see by the pictures it looks like a part of the C in Comodo but the colours don't match.

That's the strangest thing. Double-clicking doesn't do ANYTHING. Right-click doesn't show any drop-down menu but I can move it around like a shortcut. I'm going to try google images.Tried hitting Refresh desktop already or changing SCREENSAVER temporarily?You might be able to determine at least what program owns the Window. Spy++ is a program that can be used for that but APPARENTLY it needs a full Windows SDK install which is hardly worth it in this case.

However, I found WinSpy++ which is an Open Source alternative. That can be had from here. It comes in a zip and requires no install.

You can drag the little finder icon on the left over any other window or control on the screen and get information about it. You be able to drag it over this goofy weird window thing and determine the process.

One caveat I found is that it only appears to be able to determine the process if the program is a 32-bit executable, so if you are using a 64-bit system and the program creating it is actually 64-bit it won't find it. I can't seem to find a 64-bit alternative besides the aforementioned Spy++ but I don't think it can be redistributed as-is.

I think I figured out what that icon was. I must have been part of Comodo AV. I uninstalled and re-installed Comodo and it has appeared again.

I have an old Accer laptop with XP Pro/SP 3installed, don't laugh. I use it mostly just for word-processing/ spreadsheets lite internet. Lately it does not want to play any DVD's.  It used too. It plays CDs just fine but not any DVDs. I am using a version of Cyberlink-PowerDVD and its a combo drive by Toshiba CDRW/DVD TS-L462D. Help


Thank YouA simple hardware TEST is to try another OS to see if it is a driver issue.
You can download a free copy of Windows 8.1 Enterprise edition. The open up some space on your hard drive and do a small install. Then see if it can read the DVD combo correctly. Windows 8.1 has its  its own set of drivers or gets it from the Internet.  Now if  that works, then it must be some kind of software or driver PROBLEM.

I'm not sure that replacing the laser is going to solve the problem, or that you'll end up with a working DVD drive after installing and aligning it.

I have a copy of Windows 98 SE lying around doing nothing because I dont have the CD KEY to be able to install it, I tried over 20 different keys I found on the net but they didnt WORK so I phoned Microsoft and they gave me a generic key which also didnt work, which means the only key that will work is the one that came with the cd.

Is there anyway of getting the key off the CD?

The reason I ask is because I format my hard drive once a year but installing the operating system back on the hard drive is a real pain. I have to take the hard drive out of my parents IBM computer and replace it with mine, once thats done I just use the IBM recovery DISK and install an IBM version of Win98 onto my hard drive then I have to put EVERYTHING back where it came from

I recently reformated my hard drive and reinstalled Win 98, I updated IE 6 SP1 to get my software CURRENT. I apparently have a confilct with my Solitare and FreeCell programs with IE 6, every time I try to run those programs I get an error message for a illegal operation - general protection fault then I have to close the programs. I tried uninstalling IE 6 and that took care of the problem, but I would very much LIKE to have IE 6 and run those card programs run correctly. Is there a patch to take care of this conflict?

The error message is ... caused a general protection fault in module USER.EXE AT 0004:00005ff0.
and so on there are a bunch of NUMERS after Registers and Stack Dump headings.

I have a new ISP and one of my laptops will not accept the password key.  My other 2 computers are connecting without issue.  The laptop connected without fail to the PREVIOUS ISP.  I am able to input the characters, then hit "ok", then restart, but the computer will put the old key back in.  How do I get the new password key to "STICK"?  I'm running XP on the laptop in question.  Thanks.As a diagnostic aid, TRY  this:
Create another user with ADMINISTRATOR level. Log in to the new user.
Do the Network Wizard again.
Now STILL on the on the new user,  Sign in to your ISP.

I recently spent a day removing adware and spyware from my home office computer running on windows xp pro.  I went to internet explorer and found that my search option wouldnt let me use msn search. i searched on google and found a way to remove the search files but i made a mistake and deleted a vital file. When i start the computer it TELLS me that a file is missing that windows cannot run with out and it says to insert the setup cd rom and press r to try to repair on the first screen. I tried INSERTING the windows xp pro disc in but that did nothing.  i need to know what the setup disc is, or what i am doing wrong.  Any help WOULD be greatly appriciated.k_yurkiw......why dont you use the system restore feature of XP it's great .........click .....start/allprograms/accessories/system tools......then choose the system restore ......select the date of the day before you made the changes.....let it do its thing......when its finished your system will be RESTORED the way it was ......but you will have to remove the Adware again .....

I changed my monitor resolution to 1024 by 768 from 800 by 600 in Win ME. I had no luck using control panel so I tried changing it in regedit. I did make a backup of regedit before I made the change.

When I bootup, the screen is black after the WinME splash screen. I have  bootdisk. Any ideas how I change my resolution back?

f8 key on BOOT safe mode chose the command prompt SCANREG/fix or scanreg/restore......if you wish to change your video modes...right click on desktop video modes..i prefer 800x600 by having a different display ...i would need a magnifying glass like 1280x1024..?all it does it make the screen look SMALLER on a nineteen inch monitor...and therefore i would have to expand the monitor screen to compensate?Use your bootdisk to get to the 1st screen and choose "Minimum boot" and wait for the prompt to load then type:

A:\>scanreg /restore

Choose a date/time before you made the change and highlight the entry. Click OK and scanreg should restore a previous good copy of your registry.

If you right-click the desktop and click on Properties then Settings ... with ALL other windows closed ... can you then set the resolution to 1024 x 768 pixels?

That is what I use on this 19" monitor, btw, and I found it all to be more legible by increasing the font sizes.

Today I reformatted my hard drive after experiencing very SLOW conditions and when trying to reinstall windows XP I received the error message NTLDR missing press ctrl+alt+delete to restart. I then read that to access the windows cd i need to press a key immediately to prevent the NTLDR error message from appearing. However once I have accessed the cd and try to install windows it DISPLAYS the message "Setup could not read the CD you inserted, or the CD is not a valid Windows CD". I am completely stumped as to how to reinstall windows and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

By some method , you formatted your hard drive .....
so I assume you removed any partitions and then formatted. Now the hard drive is empty.....so we shut down......insert our Win 98 bootdisk in floppy drive A: and start up .......after the cd DRIVERS load and the A: prompt appears you typed D: ( or whatever your cd drive is ) then when it gave you the D: prompt you inserted the win xp or xp pro disk into the cd drive and typed .....either setup or install ( forget which one ) and windows will load ..........pour yourself a coffee and sit back and wait for it to load.........it will partition the drive as NTFS and load up .    Once its loaded reinstall your anti virus......go on line and go to Windows update and get them or d/l and install SP2 and your done .

While working on my PC today..I ended up doing a restart.  When windows loaded I got a box that says "System Configuration" at the top and "You are using the selective startup for troubleshooting your system".  I didn't change anything on my pc.  Why is it saying this at every restart now and how can I make it GO back to the way it was??  Thank u! Do you have a more tech-savvy user on your machine?  
The box that poped up is because someone used the MSCONFIG utility to change the was windows starts.  This utility is a favorite of PC repair Technicians, to prevent troubling applications from starting when Windows starts.  Normally, chosing "NO" to show this message when windows starts is okay, but if you don't remember using the msconfig utility to investigate a problem, OR ANY OTHER USER ON THAT MACHINE, then you might want to double check that all is well.  You can access the utility, by clicking the start button, and then the run command.  type "msconfig" and a window will appear.  You will want to click the "startup" tab to make sure that only the programs that you use are starting with windows.  Be CAREFULL, as you can fubar you machine with this utility too!  IF, under the startup tab, you see items for example, that arent named, you will want to make sure these processes don't start with windows, thereby, preventing them from doing their maliciousness, and freeing up valuable system resources.  It is also important to make sure that you Anti-virus and firewall software are starting with windows, make sure these are CHECKED.  After applying your new startup configuration, you will be prompted to reboot, and upon RETURNING to windows, you will get that screen you saw.  Clicking NO once for each user, will allow you to start your modified startup configuration everytime without that screen coming up.

It all started yesterday when I sought help for a problem I was having on occassion with connecting through my cable modem.. Even though my modem was in working ORDER when I would click onto internet explorer I would get "detecting proxy settings" and then an error message.  I was told to virus scan which I did and get ad-aware.. Which I did.  I ran ad-aware which came across a few items but I never deleted any of those items for fear of messing something else up!    I was then told to go to Internet Explorer..Options..advanced tab and set to default which I did.  And well..  what I described about the new  system config box is what started happening.

Ok..so I see that I can change the startup by using msconfig and changing it to normal setup...  I checked my "startup" in msconfig and see that there is a ton of things apparently running..perhaps this is why my system resources are constantly running low.  I am not that experienced at this and am not sure which are safe to TURN off?  Here is a list of what comes on at startup..  which items are safe to turn off??

so you want winme to run properly no crashes viriuses/scumware/trojans...etc...here what to do...go into c:\windows\cabs\options folder setup icon...next to scanreg icon.....click the setup icon this will re-install winme...next untick all the themes in the add/remove box and anything else that you will not use while in the control panel untick m$oft updates do it manually if you have to?>untick searching for floppy drives next untick scanreg/restore box all are found in the device manager and deleted other bits like gifs/bmps and alter the recycle bin folder to min...you should end up with about 1gig of hard drive space used thats including sygate firewall anvir personal edition spysweeper and stinger secretmaker word etc.and one complete crash free pc...cheap as well....defrag/disk cleanup after use and back to msconfig disable programs that you dont use on startup??Hello Trish, I have been running ME for four years and I would advise that you use a Firewall as well as an anti-virus.

I use Zone Alarm Free firewall and AVG Free edition anti-virus and both work very well to date. Norton can slow ME down considerably.

You should delete all that AdAware finds, I do, and also install SpyBot S&D & SpywareBlaster. Make backups just in case.

You can clean up your system too by using delindex.bat on your Windows ME Start-Disk (bootdiskette).

Keep your hidden C:\_RESTORE Folder down to 500Mb in size.

In relation to the msconfig message, did you check the box "Don't show this message again." if not, then you should do so.

In IE, Tools, IE Options, Advanced, Uncheck:

"Activate install on demand" (Other) , and, "Activate install on demand" (Internet Explorer)

Ok I have a problem, I downloaded a spyware program off the net and have nothing but trouble ever since, It was spybot, some how it removed some important FILES and I ended up reloaded my Windows XP, Now my problem is my computer has trouble connecting to the net and the email, I WORKED with my internet provider last night and he said it stars to ping ok but then just drops off. He thinks that maybe that spybot has control over my computer, Now what do I do, Do I have to format my HARD drive, hope someone can help me.

People should use SpyBot & AdAware, and they should be aware that it is the spyware on the SYSTEM which EITHER of these programs remove that cause the damage to the connection, and they should also be aware of the availablity of repairs, as listed above.

In fact after installing XP with a firewall and anti-virus program the next theree programs to add are:

SpyBot, AdAware & SpywareBlaster, even before updating to SP2.

I had no problems after updating an XP machine to SP2 as the computer was free of spyware and virus-free.

I'm in the process of fixing a laptop for my friend. It's a Sony Vaio Model VGN-FJ370. I formatted the HD and installed Windows XP SP2 32 bit. Of course I ended up with a bunch of missing drivers. Went through them one by one and got them all installed.

The Local Area Connection says connected and the Internet Gateway also says connected. I'm hooked up through an Ethernet to a portable router. The TCIP settings are set to obtain the IP address and DNS address automatically.

I've already done a bunch of troubleshooting. Wondering what else I can do that I haven't done already. I've tried messing with the network settings, I've done the netsh winsock reset. If there's any info you need that I haven't provided just let me know. Any other ideas or suggested would be great. Thank you. Where did all these drivers come from ? ?

I don't use windows updateWhen you type IPCONFIG/ALL at COMMAND shell does it show that this system is getting an IP Address lease from DHCP? Also does it should that there is a correct gateway such as router is 192.168.1.1, the gateway is then 192.168.1.1? Or are you getting a 169.x.x.x  or 0.0.0.0 type address as the systems IP Address etc?Please download MiniToolBox to Desktop and run it.
