Answer» Hello to all. However have been concerned with the large amount of updates it puts on my computer daily, as I watch my space getting smaller and smaller. This would also DEPEND on what is the actual total storage capacity of your hard DRIVE including unwanted programs installed and or media files that may be needing to be moved externally. Most users would complain of protection software system resources usage instead of the updates provided to protect your computer from new variants of virus or malware. |

Solve : HP Printer disaster? |
Answer» I'm Running XP on a Toshiba Qosmio G20-139 laptop. System was stable. Installed a HP C4480 3-in-1 PRINTER using original HP Installation disc for XP. The Install seemed to RUN OK with no error messages. After the required Reboot I noticed the computer was running unbelievably slow. Looking at Task Manager I saw the CPU at 100% useage and 85 (yes 85) running processes. A test on a similar Toshiba/XP laptop (without HP) showed a CPU usage of 5 to 20% and about 20 running processes. What on earth has happened? Although not technically crashed, the Toshiba is running so slow I doubt if I will be able to move any files to a safe harbour, such a USB Memory Stick. Can anybody suggest a way forward? I couldn't locate a HP un-install so I deleted the contents of the HP folder --but that didn't reduce the running processes one bit. What created and started up 85 processes? In task manager I'd identify what the process names are that are using up the CPU resources and list them here if you are unsure as to what they are. You should be able to kill the processes 1 by 1 for the ones that are unnecessary and eventually get your system back to a state where its not crippled. I couldn't locate a HP un-install so I deleted the contents of the HP folder --but that didn't reduce the running processes one bit. Not a good way to do it at all...HP should be listed in Control Panel/Add Remove... To re-install properly if this is a USB printer :: Do the above... Delete the printer from device Manager... Power down and dis-connect the printer... Re-boot. Re-install the HP software either from the original CD that shipped with the unit or a fresh DLoad from HP's site... At the prompt you will RECIEVE connect the printer to the USB port... Make sure the software is installed completely...do the print test page and you should be good to go...Thanks Forum for your detailed comments. How right that I should have got more recent software from HP but unfortunately the laptop in question is, by design, off-internet. Bother!DLoad it on a PC that has web access...transfer it via USB stik... It's the printer software you need ...not the laptop software. Thanks Dave and others. I didn't KNOW about changing a service from auto to manual. I have all the info now to mend my problem. Thanks. |

Solve : Some .EXE files "cannot be found"? |
Answer» So this is new to me... I've had a lot of problems with XP over the years, but here is something that I've never encountered. LNKI have never heard of a AV program changing LNK files of legit programs. The below reference is for Windows 7. It might apply to XP. Read down and find a reference to WINXP. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-system/shortcuts-lnk-default-is-changed/55bdb6b9-4ba4-46a7-8044-4c29852a3b86 Does that help any? Hey Geek, sorry for the delayed response (crazy Holiday times). So the ".BAT" that I'm referring to is a batch launcher that I wrote personally. The ".EXE"s that it has targeting errors with are all part of an old DOS program. Normally when one would double-click or otherwise launch one of these .EXEs it would flash a command window very briefly (I suppose that the EXEs want to have parameters passed which don't get passed when launched manually), however none of them would function right. When double-clicked, targeted from the RUN dialog or launched from the command-line, any of the EXEs in this 1 directory would report "cannot find file" as an error dialog. I checked all the file associations and they were correct, and no other errors with other software was found... Anyway, this isn't so much of a problem now because I just started using a different computer, but it is quite a curious problem... So if anyone has any ideas what could have caused this, please feel free to speak. P.S. There are also other files types ".BAT and .COM mostly" in this directory and they responded properly to calls... just NONE of the executables would respond... Can you verify the ACL on that folder still has the proper permissions? I tried to reproduce it by fudging with a folder's security settings and denying access in specific ways, but the only issue I got launching a 16-bit program via a batch file was "Access Denied". So I'm uncertain if this can cause it- it only AFFECTING the one folder could be a result if ACLs though. It's possible the ACLs on the individual files are corrupted too, I suppose. If the error appears in the command window, It may also be the case that the program has other files it needs that would go in the same folder, but the working directory of the file was unset or lost during the repair PROCESS, which might cause the program to launch, but look for said file in the desktop folder (or whatever the batch file is) not find what it wants and tersely say it couldn't find the file. I'll check that when I get a chance. I found a work-around solution (putting the person on another workstation) so it's a lower priority problem now. LOL! I'll post an update when I have checked it tho. Thanks BC. |

Solve : Keyboard Key Assigning? |
Answer» I've been trying to configure this digit ' (elision mark) into one of my keyboard keys because I cant input it using other methods in the program I'm wanting to use it. If a font can show the mark, does that mean it contains it? I donot quite understand your question, but I think this is what you want to know; Not all fonts have the same icons. They simply are not added. You can see what markings and types of letters a font has by using.. Yes, you guessed it, Windows Special Mark tool Located In Start -> Programs -> 'Bureau accessoires' (Donot know the correct English term) -> System work tools (Again, donot know the correct term) This may differ for Pre-Windows XP operating systems.I think I understand now, thanks I'm not sure which option to choose when I enter System Tools in Windows XP pro. I GOTO Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools..... Then I am left with these options; Backup Disk Cleanup Disk Defragmenter Files and Settings TRANSFER Wizard Scheduled Tasks Security Center System Information System Restore Is it one of these? There is another option Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Accessibility Magnifier Narrator On-screen keyboard Utility Manager I'm not sure if any of these are the english version of "Windows Special Mark" but I dont want to mess around with anything incase I destroy my computer or something I have taken the liberty to put my creative skills to use. I have Windows XP Upgrade. I did not upgrade, I only used the Windows 98 CD-ROM as proper authorization. Perhaps it is not installed by default on Windows XP Pro. You can install additional Windows components by using the Add/remove Software menu and selecting the corresponding tab.http://www.starr.net/is/type/kbh.html and this link>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;Q310417&ID=KB;EN-US;Q310417On XP go..... Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools> Character Map.....The english equivalent of special marks and follow raptors instructions from there....Character map in windows only shows to use the keystroke for the character specified. alt+039 will yield the character. XP uses the unicode character set and windows versions prior to XP (except NT*) use the ANSI character set. In both ANSI and unicode the decimal value is 39. The ANSI hex value is 0x27 and the unicode hex value is U+0027. *NT uses a combination of ANSI and ascii but should not be a problem for the specified character. Quote Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools> Character Map I dont have the Character Map option in my system tools...... I am using Windows XP pro, you think its just for XP Home version? I checked the link posted by merlin_2 and it says you can do a search for 'charmap' in run, but it doesn't find anything...... Does anyone here have Windows XP Pro and do tehy have the Character Map option? Quote Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools..... Then I am left with these options; Thats all I get. No other options By the way, thanks for your help everyone, I really appreciate it As I said, see if you can install it by going to the Add/remove software function and look for the 'add extra Windows components' tab on the left. Perhaps you can add it from there. I use Windows XP Home and Charmap does work here. You may have to install it first.OK I installed it from my Windows XP CD and can use it now. But I'm having trouble getting the character to show using the NUMPAD. The code to type is Alt+0027 right? Each time I hold alt and press the number then release Alt, it is supposed to show the character correct? I have set the character and copied it. But I cant get it working. My numlock is ON, I type the code while holding Alt, and the cursor moves across as if I was using the space key. I tried typing in other codes and it works fine........ but not with U+0027.......... even U+0028 works *censored*... I thought it would be easier than this I'm determined to get it working, but I always miss the small THINGS. There must be something I'm doing wrong. Could you perhaps explain again what it exactly is you're trying to do? I understand that you somehow require one of the special marks to be copied into a program in order to have it run?You don't need character map to do it. If had paid attention to my post above, you would have seen tha alt+039 is what you need. If you insist on doing things the hard way, thats OK too. |

Solve : Visual 05 install issue? |
Answer» Hello, Microsoft Visual Studio is a complete set of development tools for building ASP.NET Web applications, XML Web services, desktop applications, and mobile applications. Visual Basic, Visual C++, Visual C#, and Visual J# all use the same integrated development environment (IDE), which ALLOWS them to share tools and facilitates in the creation of mixed-language solutions. From this above one can see there is potential of difficulty in installing Visual 2005 on some older systems. Or Vice Versa. The J# language has some issues that can not be resolved. Specifically, Microsoft can not support it. I wold suggest you only install the components you need and do not include the J# package. Here is another idea that can work for you. Shrink the hard drive with a suitabler tool and create a new PARTITION. If the drive is near full., you u may have to off load some stuff you not longer user, like old movies you downloaded. Then do a clean install of Windows XP on the new partition. Do not update it. Then install Visual Studio 2005. It should work. Some programs require the .NET framework. This can cause a conflict with installation of Visual Studio 2005 in some cases. So don't in stall those programs. This computer is not connected to the Internet and probably never will, I have a laptop right next to it where I post and download and transfer thing via flash drive. So therefor I can't get so 2 or 3. I did some messing around and found a visual c++ 05, so j# is not the problem. It did the same error message. Could I possibly update the windows installer I have? The shrinking the hard drive idea, I have no Idea how to do it. And I don't think it I can do it with out Internet. Thanks.Where are you getting these installers?2005 requires XP SP2 Quote System Requirements As seen here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3387 This link is for the redist package for running software that requires 2005 support for VC etc, which is likely the same as the requirement for the Visual Studio 2005 product.... ALSO is this the real Visual Studio 2005 ( Purchased - Hopefully Legally Licensed ) version - OR - Visual Studio Express 2005 which is free? You need to install the XP Service Packs...Okay, yes I know they need the sp2 and up. I have done this before, and it worked. On sp1 And I am getting these installs from Microsoft. The visual studio 2005 support from xp sp2 and more as mentioned but xp sp1 not possible.HuHH ? ? |

Solve : May have killed my OS by shredding 2 software drivers, could use advice? |
Answer» I had been having blue screen problems with my old Dell XP. The programs WhoCrashed and BlueScreenView implicated a few drivers of non-essential software as the culprits. I examined the drivers module in AutoRuns (by Sysinternals) and carefully selected non-essential software drivers for disabling of their autostart status by unchecking the box in AutoRuns. (I avoided hardware drivers, Microsoft drivers, and drivers for actual autostart programs.) Three times when I restarted after this limited driver-autostart disabling I got the STOP: 0X0000007B blue screen. I was in effect forced to use Last Known Good Configuration on the subsequent startups, and this restored all the autostarts I had disabled. To test what was going on, I shut down my system without disabling any driver autostarts, and the system started normally. |

Solve : File options folder? Reinstalling Windows XP? |

Answer» I posted about this a month or so ago and am still having problems so I thought I'd try again. I went into BIOS and then repaired Windows XP but only to reboot and come up with the exact same problems. You cannot repair your operating system from your BIOS. Quote Is there anyway just to wipe out XP? Like go back to how it was when I got the computer. XP was loaded on it, of course. Set your CD-ROM to the first boot device (Do that in the BIOS) then use the Windows XP CD-ROM as boot CD and say you wish to install it, from there it will prompt you there are harddrives with data on them that can be formatted before continuing |

Solve : help ? Is generic database text easy to read using Diskedit or a text editor? |
Answer» I was wondering if general database text easy to read USING Diskedit? No. A database file has a specific structure. Often not the same as a TXT file. Microsoft Access stores data in its own format based on the Access Jet Database Engine. It can also import or link directly to data stored in other applications and databases.[1]Trying to text edit a file from Microsoft Access can result in bad errors. Other data apse programs have their own structure for data. It is needed for fast recall and reliability. In fact, the structure is often optimized for a placation. ISAM databases are likely the only database files that you'll find readable (and editable) using a text editor. ANYTHING else is unlikely to be very readable, let alone editable. |

Solve : Suggestions for Good Internet Blocker/Parental Controls?? |
Answer» Hi, ...Techniques involving a proxy server are also used. A web browser is set to send requests for web CONTENT to the proxy server rather than directly to the web server intended. The proxy server then fetches the web page from the web server on the web browser's behalf and passes on the content to the browser. Proxy servers can inspect the data being sent and received and intervene depending on various criteria relating to content of the page or the URL being requested...A lot can be said about this topic. But I will wait for your response. IMHO software solutions are not effective unless the get down to a lower level of control; such a s pricy server redirect in the HOME network router. Otherwise, a precocious child can boot the PC with a "Live Linux" CD and bypass your windows software. Hi, I can't thank you enough for your thoughtful reply. I wish I had children, but I don't. My issue is for myself. I'm not a criminal (fortunately), but I need to find a way to restrict my Internet activity on my computer for my sanity! Sadly, this is the only way for me, I don't seem to have the discipline most people do to avoid going to those places on the Internet I have no business going. My interest is in having a productive life, and that goes out the window when I am going to all those X-rated sites. Any other ideas? Thanks a bunch for your time. LarryYou could try to contact your ISP and ask them to filter from their side ... they might (and PROBABLY would) charge you a bit extra for that service rendered. Another option is to try using OpenDNS ... This is, however, far from fool-proof given your situation. Solve : Explorer Crashes on startup? |
Answer» Hi, I just had a QUESTION about my computer. Everytime I start it up, as soon as windows loads, i get an error message saying that explorer has crashed, even before anything on the desktop appears on the screen. So when i click close, the computer just sits there because there is nothing loaded. When I press ctrl+alt+del, there are no tasks running. So the only options i have are to CANCEL and let the computer sit there and do nothing, or shutdown or restart, and then it does the same thing over again everytime. I don't know if theres anything I can do about it since the computers getting PRETTY old, but i can't download any patches or anything like that, I mean it doesn't let me do anything at all even after explorer crashes. Thanks for helping me, I really appreciate it.can u load it in SAFE mode??What operating system are you using? |

I apparently have a confilct with my Solitare and FreeCell programs with IE 6, every time I try to run those programs I get an error message for a illegal operation - general protection fault then I have to close the programs. I tried uninstalling IE 6 and that took care of the problem, but I would very much LIKE to have IE 6 and run those card programs run correctly. Is there a patch to take care of this conflict? |

Solve : File is missing? |
Answer» I recently spent a day removing adware and spyware from my home office computer running on windows xp pro. I went to internet explorer and found that my search option wouldnt let me use msn search. i searched on google and found a way to remove the search files but i made a mistake and deleted a vital file. When i start the computer it TELLS me that a file is missing that windows cannot run with out and it says to insert the setup cd rom and press r to try to repair on the first screen. I tried INSERTING the windows xp pro disc in but that did nothing. i need to know what the setup disc is, or what i am doing wrong. Any help WOULD be greatly appriciated.k_yurkiw......why dont you use the system restore feature of XP it's great .........click .....start/allprograms/accessories/system tools......then choose the system restore ......select the date of the day before you made the changes.....let it do its thing......when its finished your system will be RESTORED the way it was ......but you will have to remove the Adware again ..... |

Solve : Trouble reinstalling windows XP after reformat.? |
Answer» Today I reformatted my hard drive after experiencing very SLOW conditions and when trying to reinstall windows XP I received the error message NTLDR missing press ctrl+alt+delete to restart. I then read that to access the windows cd i need to press a key immediately to prevent the NTLDR error message from appearing. However once I have accessed the cd and try to install windows it DISPLAYS the message "Setup could not read the CD you inserted, or the CD is not a valid Windows CD". I am completely stumped as to how to reinstall windows and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! No, the cd I'm using is the full version of windows XP as far as I know. I own both a copy of windows XP Home and Professional and it can't read either of them. How did you do the formatting, with a bootdiskette or with the XP CD? Which format command did you use? (format c: /FS:NTFS) Have you tried the official Microsoft XP Home & Professional bootdisk sets? Click the first link below. You will need six formatted floppy diskettes for each set. |
