Hi, I am attempting to reboot Windows ME onto my friend's crashed PC that was running Win 98 (90% sure it was win 98).  The method of installation was through CD-Rom.  The computer was searching the floppy drive for system files, but not the CD ROM drive.  The Boot Sequence would only display this one prompt, and nothing else:

{Non-System Disk or Disk Error.  Replace and strike any key when ready.}

I  can't get past this screen on that computer. The computer that i'm using RIGHT NOW is my friend's only working computer, and it has no floppy drive to load the Windows AutoRun Files or Boot-Up Files. I tried forcing the non-working computer to read CD Rom only, by disconnecting the Floppy Disk Drive, and I have no clue if it read the CD Rom or if it was just making a loud noise. - I PULLED UP THE CD ROM CONTENTS ON THIS [WORKING] COMPUTER AND I NOTICED AN AUTO-RUN FILE .TXT FORMAT FOR NOTEPAD FILE AND ALSO AN AUTORUN FOLDER, WHICH CONTAINS TWO FILES, ONE WAS DESCRIBED AS AN AUTO-RUN PROGRAM IN PROPERTIES, BUT I DON"T EVEN KNOW IF THESE FILES ARE CAPAPABLE OF AUTOMATICALLY INSTALLING THE NEW OS FROM THE BOOT SEQUENCE THAT IT WON'T LET ME GET PAST!!!- If that makes sense.  Do I need a DIFFERENT auto-run file from the internet, is it a hardware issue, is there a way to (while in this boot sequence) switch to the cd rom drive as the boot-up disk for OS installation, and last but not least- is there a way to enter safe mode without any OS???? (I'm assuming the OS is non-existent, and further assuming that it has crashed)  I can't even be sure if the OS crashed or not, because the boot sequence will only display that one prompt about a disk reading error (mentioned earlier).  And the disk should be fine, it's just a backup i made of the original ME Os Startup Disk I have (but unfortunately misplaced).  I need some expertise please- and if possible, a list of different troubleshooting methods that would work for multiple different scenarios (SINCE I can't diagnose the problem for sure.)  Could it have to do with hardware, software, or maybe both?  I have so many questions, and would appreciate any sort of bone that could be thrown my way.

I pulled up the CD-ROM contents on this, working, computer and I noticed an auto-run .txt file and also an auto-run folder which contains two files. Do I need a different auto-run file from the internet? Is it a hardware issue? Is there a way to, while in this boot sequence, switch to the CD-ROM drive as the boot-up disk for OS installation?

And, last but not least, is there a way to enter safe mode without any OS?

(I am assuming the OS is non-existent, and further assuming that it has crashed)

I had a ?? installed called Christmas Glow, it was a screensaver from Cloudeight, which I thought I had removed.  Several sessions - 20 or 30 times each - a thing pops up on my screen, saying Christmas Glow data field does not exist and it has an OK button, it takes dozens of clicks to make them all go away.  I have tried the install/uninstall program, and followed several help tips but ##**.  Yes, I am stupid but that doesn't mean I can't follow directions, any help would be ssoooo appreciated.  GwenDownload & run 'AUTORUNS' from http://www.sysinternals.com it will allow you to disable or delete any UNWANTED startup programs.Thanks for the info - I tried ... it asks which program I want to use - I picked Outlook - it wouldn't do it.  So I picked Save and it's on my desktop but it won't work - it keeps asking me what I want to use to open it and nothing I try works.  Remember I'm dumb - treat me that way.  Since I first wrote this note I've had about 40 more of the "data file does not exist" things ... help..Autoruns downloads as a zip file so you will need to UNZIP it with winzip.
Put it in it's own directory of your choosing.Gwen Drew......It's quite possible that you still have some bits and pieces of "Christmas Glow" left on your machine ......
I would try this .......
First ........using the search feature ............search your pc for Christmas Glow ........ and delete anything that is found ........
Then , I would D/L ....CCleaner...... http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html.....
Run the cleaner ....first ....and then click on and run issues...... ( this will SCAN your REGISTRY and perhaps find and fix any entries refering to Christmas Glow )

I just did a clean install of WINDOWS ME, and it INSTALLED OK, but I can't get out of Safe Mode, and open up my monitor to full screen.  What can I do?SEE your first post above.

I have no idea what happened with my system.  when i start the system it stops with the black screen and i cannot do anything .  windows will not boot.  I went to the hp page and found the exact topic and thought it would be an easy fix but nothing helped.  hp says to uplug any other devices from the unit except the KEYBORD mouse and monitor.  these are not new units either.  Please help give me some insight on this. thanksCheck your HARD DRIVE cabels. I brought MSworks files from my old pc(WIN2000)
and I am unable to open them in XP.  I ALSO can't open documents WRITTEN in XP but saved into a folder brought over with the old files.
 The only way I am able to open them is to open works-  click file- find the document and open.  I want to be able to just click on it and open it.  
These documents are not marked hidden.
Error message reads- file may be corrupted or PATH and file name may be invalid.superhol.....if you have the files on your XP machine ...you should be able to go to that folder .....open the folder and go to any of the docs....and right click on it and choose "open with " then select the app you want to open them with .......

That's what I thought.   I open the file and click the doc-
   Works unable to open the project you selected. The    
   file may be corrupted.... is the error message.
I right click- ask it to open with MS works and I get the same message.
Any other ideas?
Try opening it with WORDPAD instead.

How do I EDIT the send to  dialog to include another LOCATION?Open up the "c:\documents and settings\%username%\SENDTO folder and add whatever location you need.

SendTo usually consists of some standard WINDOWS locations and all your REMOVABLE drives.

When I TYPE quotation marks, (") they don't appear on the screen until I type SOMETHING else. This happens in all programs. On my other COMPUTER I can type them normally.

So WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE OF 4.199GB DEVOTED TO?

I was hoping somebody could perhaps give me some help.  My mom's Dell Dimension 2400 was experiencing extreme lag, so she decided to try reformatting it.  However, she ran into some complications and couldn't complete the process.  I tried taking a look, but I can't FIGURE out what the problem is.  The computer is stuck in the middle of trying to reinstall Windows XP because it always fails.  When I start it up, it prompts me to insert the Microsoft Windows XP: Home EDITION disc.  After doing so, the computer starts installing, but it stops about halfway through and displays a message on a blue screen...

I have a fairly large FORTRAN 77/90 & C program, compiled using Compaq Visual Fortran 6 & MICROSOFT Visual C++ 6 under Win XP.  On a particular test case it generally executes ok when invoked outside a batch FILE, but always fails when invoked from a particular batch file.  It stops on a Fortran 90 Allocate statement, but does not return the STAT result coded into that statement.  Seems to relate more to how much storage has been allocated rather than to the particular array being allocated, because I can reorder the allocation of different arrays and the stop does not occur on the same array.

Although this is a large body of code, the test case is small and should not be requiring a large amount of allocated storage.

I have tryed cutting the batch file down to just the STATEMENTS that occur before INVOKING the EXE file (which are SET /P, ECHO, COPY, DEL, IF EXIST), then running the truncated batch file, then executing the EXE outside the batch file.  The EXE also fails in that usage.

Any ideas on what I should be looking for to fix this?

Recently we installed the light scribe HP hardware and software on one of the machines at work( Dell Dimension(winXP ) and for a week it was fine but yesterday started displaying  unmountable_boot_volume error. We tooke the HP Light scribe hardware out as recommended on the message and restarted the COMPUTER but winxp will not start at all, gives message sorry for the inconvenience-...start win. NORMALLY, load previous config...etc but nothing works.
Tried doing the boot with winxp cd and win.repair , then chkdsk, chkdsk/r and /p but none of it seem to work, they either get stuck at 0% and stay like that for hours or simply display that there is an error in the command.. I know there is a solution to install the hard drive on a different machine but I am kind of worried that the other one doesn't get screw up as well. The computer with the error message has a lot of data that is very important so can not be re-installed(winxp) at this time. Oh, also the computer makes funny ticking noise, like a clock. -i know it is weird but 4 people HEARD it as well

Does anyone have any solutions?

Thank youIf windows repair, chkdsk & chkdsk /r /p don't work - add to that the ticking, I would say your hard drive has FAILED.

Attach the hard drive to another system and you might be able to access the data that way if it hasn't failed completely.thank you,
The ticking USUALLY means the reading arm is knocking against something.

My EMAIL CALENDAR reads like STANDARD email, it isn't in a calendar format. I can't figure out why not or how to fix it. I've tried to fix it, but don't even have options to adjust it. Maybe its something in the orginal set up of the system? I really need a calendar to keep my appointments. Can anyone help me?

D is empty and C is nearly full.
How do we get the 2 seperate drives to be just 1 as is normal.
He has bought a 40 gig portable hard drive (USB)
It is an XP system and the supplier says they don't even open the boxes. Why would Acer sell laptops like this ?

Have you considered moving the My Documents folder and email folder to the D: drive so that your data and operating system are separated?

It is more usual to partition a drive, when you have sufficient experience.Dave:

DavePersonally I always make two partitions on a Windows box. The second is great for data storage, etc. for when you format and have to reinstall Windows on the C drive. (And you will have to reinstall Windows eventually!)I'm sure I can hear a Pengiun singing....

I have an external harddrive with alot of files on it, but I dont take it everwhere I go, especaially to school.  Is there a way I can set it up so that I can VIEW the files on the drive, as if it were acutally connected.  I know i wont beable to use, or to EDIT any of the files, I would just like to view them, to keep track of what I have.  Thanks for your time.
Andre WabrikFor you to ACCESS them you need to have the system setup and running with the drive attached. Then use something like Remote Desktop, in XP, where you can log into your system over the internet from another location.
You'll need to enable this function in system properties- Remote tab, tick the 'Allow users to connect remotely to this desktop'. Make sure your firewall is set up to allow this connection - using port 3389.

Also making sure the system you are using allows you to connect outwards over the internet.
You'll need to setup user names (Main admin user already has access) who can use this function and you have to set the account up with a password too.Thanks for you advise, but thats not what I was asking for.  I dont think I made my SELF clear.  I only have once computer.  I use the external at home for LISTENING to music, and watching movies, and playing games etc.  When I come to school, I bring my laptop with me, but not the exteral harddrive.  I would like to know if it is possible to view the drive as if it were installed, but just to view, not to use the files.

PC-A and PC-B both running XP HOME, Sp2.

PC-A CAT 5 connected to Westell wireless DSL MODEM, and PC-B connecting with USB wireless NIC.


PC-B can see PC-A, and open all files.
PC-A can see PC-B (View Workgroup Computers) but when PC-B is clicked on, error: User does not have permission to open this SERVER (or something like that).

I’ve recreated the workgroup, directly connected PC-B with CAT 5 to the modem, repaired network connections, checked sharing permissions...
Any ideas?

Make sure the shared folder on PC-B has your user name as a member of one of the groups that has full CONTROL access to the folder.  Make sure you LOG on with the same password and user name on both computers. Make sure both computers are members of the same workgroup with the same network IP address and subnet mask.

Did you try to ping PC-B?

I have formatted data in Access, Word and Excel ie: a date field to print in long date format and currency to print with £ and 2 decimal places.
After checking all the obvious settings the data is printing in American style format.

Trying to clean up my neighbor's PC which runs under WINDOWS XP Professional, I openened Windows Explorer and found under Windows a lot of files printed in blue with the name "$NtUninstallXxxxxxx$',being X ONE or two letters (Q or KB) and XXXXXX a six digit number like 890923, 329834, and so on.

What files are those?  Where did they com from?  May I delete them without further problem?They are no mystery

They are compressed(so blue) windows UPDATE or service pack uninstallation files. They must be hidden why do you see them?

You better not to touch them. But not so serious ones I think.

If you insist on deleting, it's up to you   They enable you to un-install any hotfixes and or Service Packs you have installed...if your machine is running fine then it is completely safe to delete them. I usually keep them for about 3 weeks to make sure the latest fixes are running fine then i TRASH em.

When I specify a graphics file to use as wallpaper, it takes effect for every user - not just the one that selects the file.  

I am running windows XP with all the latest updates.

Can anyone tell me how to make sure that every user gets his/her own desktop BACKGROUND?

Thanks but everyone already has their own user name and  password.  Change wallpaper for one user and it changes for all the others too.

I should probably mention that this has not always happened .  At one point we had unique wallpapers but something changed and since then setting wallpaper for any user sets it for everyone.

Does this happen when other users change the wallpaper, or only when you change it?Happens regardless of who changes it.  Created a new user and as new user set wallpaper.   All others got the wallpaper selected by the new user.Dave:

Haven't heard of this one before.  Have you installed Windows XP service pack 2?  If not, use Windows Update to do so.  If this is a bug, the SP may fix it.

If you CLICK on the link at the foot of this post you can try using the HOUSECALL on-line scanner.Windows XP
I found it listed under my startup after I used CCleaner on my computer (advised from a previous forum)
I also use Symantec, AVG, Ad Aware, and Spybot.

The weird thing is that none of these programs pick it up as a problem.  

I will try the housecall as well.

I'm a complete idiot. While trying to get a secondary monitor to work off of my laptop, I accidentally disabled the DEFAULT - now neither monitor is displaying anything after the Windows loading screen. It GOES blank at log-in.

How do I get in there to switch it back?

*smacks forehead*Have you tried the - Last Known Good CONFIGURATION - from safe mode?alternatively try Enable VGA Mode from the same F8 option screen. this will ALLOW you to change display settings whilst in a Safe Mode environment.

Nearly all laptops have a Fn+F key combination function to SWAP between external and laptop display. Check and see what F key your uses.

Unable to get into secured sites . . unable to ping system . .SAYS I am not connected to Internet.  I am no longer able to connect to Norton . . Norton does not acknowledge that I have administrator rights .   Do not know if Norton is SCREWING up the secured sites issue or what???  Please advise.Either try a system restore to a point before this or uninstall Norton and see if everything works.

If you have Norton Internet Security, its FIREWALL may not be configured correctly.  Check the documentation that came with the program.  You may be able to temporarily disable the firewall (like i can disable my Norton antivirus program) and see if you are able to connect.  If you are, the firewall settings need to be changed.

Have you tried pinging the NIC to see if it is working?  At the command prompt, type PING 127.0.0.1.  If you get four replies, the network interface card is OK.

hey everyone i got a weird PROBLEM here...

my PC recently started actin weird when i try to launch world of warcraft my PC reboots...i try to launch some exe files AKA driver updates and other app executables and they automaticly close or reboot the PC....

its a dell 8400 intel 3 gig duel HDD 80 gig a piece ati radeon x800se SB audigy2 1 gig RAM DDR 533 mhz

ive done virus scans and spyware scans and registry scans to no avail hardware tests  all pass i have no idea what else to look for....any help would be greatly appriciated... thanks a lot

You didn't mention what you use for spyware/adware/virus protection on a REGULAR basis.

You should also have the following tools to keep your puter RUNNING smoothly .....

Some decent Anti -Virus ( updated of course)

Ad-Aware SE personel....... http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html

SpyBot 1.4 ......  http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

CCleaner ..... http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html

Make sure you get the latest updates for the last 3 once you have them D/L .

You can do a defrag ......using XP ....click on start/all programs / accessories / system tools / then select Disk defragmentor .

Once you have all the tools D/L ...updated and ready to run...... do the following .

Disconnect from internet .
Reboot into SAFE mode .
Turn off system restore .
Now run the scans ......starting with your AV , then Ad-aware SE , then Spybot  and finally CCleaner .

Remove anything it finds and then reboot back into normal mode and see how things are .
Running these scans will take a while ....so be patient .

When the scanning is complete .......turn the system restore back on .

Let us know how things are .

i RECENTLY purchased qwest high speed dsl service and have been unable to connect with the service with my laptop. I am USING an ethernet cable to connect and my modem is in working order. Having gone through the help phone number with qwest, they have figured that the problem is in my computer. The dsl modem is unable to find my computer, it cannot find my ip address. Hi all thanks for taking the time to read my problem.

I have a P4 3, 2 GIG ram, 2x120gig hd, Raid, running 2 x 180 GIG drives, TV card, Radon 9600 Video card, on board sound, Netgear wireless card, etc. Running XP Media edition.

I use this computer as a Multi Media PC and it serves Movies & Music to my lounge using Neuston MC500 media player. All worked well.

One of my HD failed and of cause it was the one with the OS on, so I put a new drive in and reloaded my software. All appeared to be running well.

I bought 2x SC101 Netgear storage centres and put in 2x250GIG and in the other unit 2x180gig drives, formatted and are also working fine.

For some reason ever so often when I am using my MC500 I can be watching a movie and my computer will restart and I don’t know why. It does a memory dump and I have attached it here for your help.

It does not happen if I am listening to Music and only happens when I am watching a movie.

I don’t know if it an issue with the SC101, Video drives, but the MC500 is inderpended to the video card, and the pc just serves the data to the box, or if it is a Memory issue.

I get the following on the blue screen.

Please check the Event Viewer for the event ID numbers linked to the problem:

1. Right-Click My Computer and select Manage.
2. In Computer Management, click Event Viewer and then double click System.
3. Write down the event ID and description for any errors (those with a white X inside a RED circle).

Thanks for you quick reply, I have looked where you suggested, but there is no report at all.  A few seconds before the computer crashes, I hear a bonk, bonk, like windows has a problem and if I have my computer open showing the drives from the storage center I hear the noise and then they disapear then the memory dump starts.  I am sure that it is not a problem with my MC500 Neuston music center, and the problem has only started sice installing the Netgear SC101.  BTW I have contact Netgear, and I am on a 10 day wait before they look at at.  I did manage to found out that the file that could be causing the crash is made by dataplow, incorporate and that it is a SAN File SYSTEM (SfS)  what ever that is and the File version is 3.41, so I have sent an email off to them and they have asked for a memory dump which I have supplied, so i am waiting to hear from them.  So i really dont know where to go from here.

Any kind soul ADVISE the command prompt script for this, please.Back in the old days, there was a command line utility called TOUCH that would work. The new and improved version runs under windows and is interactive. If you have an old copy of TOUCH you could incorporate it into a script.

The fact that you need to RECOVER the original DateModified field only adds to the complexity. SCRIPTS can only see DateModified as a read-only property.

I wondered if using PERL or another language might work, there must be a script which can redate the file. I used to use Kermit et al in Unix, so might this be a way.

I can no longer get windows ME to load. Here is what happens: I TURN on the computer and wait for it to boot. Then I come to a screen where I can choose between RedHat 9.0 or "DOS," which is really windows. If I choose windows, it starts to load normally--the screen with the windows logo comes up and then my current wallpaper is displayed. After that, SCANDISK starts to run. Whether I let scandisk run or close it before it starts, this is as far as I get. Windows stops loading, and no icons or start button APPEARS. If I TRY Ctrl-Alt-Del, I am able to close the tasks (about four) that are running, all of which are not responding.Would turning the auto scan disk off do anything?1st Windows isn't DOS...2 different things.
When did you install RedHat ? ?

I am running Windows XP home edition on my PC. I started to update Windows by installing service pack 2 for Windows. Partly through installation I received an error message that said the installation had to quit because of errors. I then kept receiving an error dialogue box that said "APPLICATION ERROR SMSPAINT.exe the instruction at "0x77e7650d" referenced memory at "0xc670ffbc". The memory COULD not be read. I rebooted in safe mode but I continue to receive this error message or a dialogue box that reads an error message  "APPLICATION ERROR DSUOEX32.EXE".

Is there any way to remove these files? I have run a search for file but NOTHING comes up.Try this fix from MS for the Windows installer...

I  install a Dvd DRIVE in my computer . I put the dvd drive as master on the second IDE and the cd-rom drive as SLAVE. The computer sees only the DVD- drive , not the cd-rom. then I switch the DVD- drive as slave and the CD-rom as master on the second IDE. Now the computer sees only  the CD-rom and not the DVD - drive.
I t does the same on the primary IDE .My computer is an IBM APTIVA, the operating system is WinXP.Did you CHANGE anything in the BIOS/setup? F1 on boot I believe. What does it show?How are the drives cabled ? ?
The dvd being master should be at the end of the ribbon cable with the cd as slave in the MIDDLE connector of the ribbon cable.
If this doesn't work replace that ribbon cable with a new one.
If this also doesn't work change the jumper on the CD drive to CS leaving the DVD jumpered as master.

Yes. If you RUN a b adapter on a g network that machine will REVERT to the b speed ...same with each progressive protocol.

This will not affect the ENTIRE network, only that particular machine.

Can a floppy have been written on if it was never formatted?  It may have been formatted when it was NEW. Most of them are. CHECK in ANOTHER machine.

Yes, i'd like to install the Fedora linux onto my Fujitsu laptop that has 60G MEMORY, 1.6GHz, 512M RAMs. It's got the windows XP already so i guess i need to create a new partition for Fedora. I need what's called dual boot system. However, my concern is that this is going to be my very first time to do any partition on a hard disk. Not sure if Fedora is smart enough to find itself some room in the hard disk without affecting windows.

My other concern is that say the fedora is already installed, then i need to reboot the computer. Can i get to choose which OS i want it to run on? or is it automatically boot up linux? Just to be careful about this(of course i'll make a backup COPY of my important files before getting down into this business).

If your hard disk is all one big partition as it usually is, then you will either need to reload windows after making the hard drive into a smaller partition, leaving room for Linux in the empty space OR you need to use some kind of partition management software such as Partition Magic, etc. I don't remember if Fedora has this built in (QTPartEd o womething SIMILAR).

How did you decide on Fedora? Some of those distributions have LIVE CD so that you can take it for a test spin first and see if everything is compatible. As manufacturer's are honed in to the Windows audience sometimes that CAN be a problem.

Have you ever run Linux before? You may want to try the Linspire 5.0 Live CD a try. It is the most Windows like. You may also want to look at Knoppix. They just boot from your CDROM without writing anything to the hard drive.

Try using the Boot redirector bootdisk which you'll find on the LINK below, if you have a floppy drive.

But, when you say that it is a copy, are you sure that it is strictly legal?  well, if it work on other computers, I suggest you check the bios settings. Enable boot from cdrom.

I recieved a IBM NetVista computer TODAY as a gift, it has Winnt 4.0 on it, I am unable to login to PC. I called the GUY and he told me that the PC was a change out from a local hotel, so I called them with the login information and the two passwords and user ID's they gave me don't work, and they have no IDEA what could be if not the two they gave me. This is only a slight problem but interrupts my gameplay.

Basically, the BLUE bars (upper and lower) appear while I'm playing one game in particular. Only this game, none of the others.

This has only started happening since last night and hasn't happened before (been playing this game six months now). As far as I know no one else has this problem.

I CAN GET rid of the lower bar (unlock TASKBAR) but results in changing the way my character moves in the game and makes "steering" very difficult.

I've submitted support requests but have not been contacted (they're notoriously difficult in contacting when things go bad).

I'm USING Windows XP and the game is City of Heroes.

Let me know if there is any other information you MAY need.

We’ve bought the program IGI 2 from Codemasters. When we start the program the following error message APPEARS:

DirectX error message: D3DERR_NOTAVAILABLE

We run Windows XP.

Can anybody tell me what to do? I’ve tried to reinstall the version directX 8.1 (as supplied with the game CD), tried downloading version 9 from microsoft , but this didn’t help either.

You NEED to download DirectX 9c. Install that then from the command prompt after reboot type in dxdiag and let us know what is displayed.Hi,
thanks for the advice. Download done and tried installing from command prompt. did not succeed becasue of Windows Logo-test.
So, did no reboot, but checked dxdiag. Following findings:
directx version 8.1 (4.09.00.0904)
- vga.dll has no signature
- nvapu.sys has no signature
- registerinfo: directplay8 TCP/IP, IPX, Modem, Serial Services Provider mssing or damaged

Any suggestions?

ok. i turn on my COMPUTER and all of a sudden a black screen appears with white letters saying that a program wasn't installed right. It gives me a list of options on either putting in on normal or safe mode. I tried both but a blue screen appears saying that SOMETHING happened to my computer and it has to restart. Then it's like the computer FROZE or something. I tried this so many times. PLEASE HELP!OK, here's the deal. Umm.. I don't know much about computers. I know that I have windows microsoft. I use internet explorer off comcast. I have Macafee Firewall, Spyware Protector, and VIRUS Scan. It's been like this since today, and the last time i used it was yesterday. I do have legal windows cd to reinstall but my computer wont go to it's normal page.You probably have a LOT of spyware and adware, perhaps a virus AND your browser has been hijacked. The first thing you will need to do is download Hijack This. Do a google search for it.

Since you cannot get on the Internet. Have someone copy these to a CD for you to install.

Run all of these and let us know what is happening. You can post the Hijack This file here. It will probably take several posts.

If you want you can try system restore to an earlier point when your computer was working fine. Then you will need to clean things up.

XP Home SP 2, 5 user accounts, 4 of those are limited accounts, 1 is admin.
Load an app under the admin ACCOUNT for all users to run. The admin account can run the app fine.
Unfortunately, none of the users are able to run the app. The error states:
"User UNABLE to WRITE file E:\pmwpmuser.dat"
The folder properties has Read Only checked. Tried to uncheck read only and it will not stay unchecked.

Does any one KNOW what I have to do to allow limited users to run these apps?
(other than giving them admin rights)

hi guys! ive read quite a few post here in cpomuterhope and i think this is a very friendly and helpful site. thats why i decided to come here and ask for your assistance. this is my first TIME to register and make a post to ask help from the helpful guys here due to a problem that occured in my computer.

heres the thing while im doing my routine maintainance for my computer, after running some anti-spyware programs i ran SPYBOT S&D 1.4 and after it scans i closed it. i noticed that my pc slowed down. so i checked my pc performance in the task manager and it showed a lot of spikes! from 2% to 50% to 100% and back again to 0% and so on. it keeps fluctuating every 1 second or so. i restarted my computer and it still doing the spikes.

i dont know what to do! SOMEBODY pls help me!!

im pretty sure that i dont have any virus or spyware that slow my pc bcoz i didnt installed anything prior to the spikes. and i regularly ran antivirus, anti trojan and diff anti spyware programs to make sure i woudnt have any problems but here it goes i had a problem on spikes and i dont have any idea whats causing this. can somebody pls help me? i cant use my computer properly!

ok here i got some more info. here are the list of the security softwares im running, kaspersky antivirus ver 5 (realtime protection), outpost firewall, trojan hunter (trojan hunter GUARD enabled), ad-aware, spyguard,spyware blaster and spybot S&D and counter spy ver 1.5 (active protection enabled). ive been running this programs for quite a while now and in the past they have been consistent,giving me no problems at all.

oh..isnt this problem a common one? i dunno..im getting a bit worried now.

as i noticed the spikes turned relatively low now, but then when i opened the counterspy 1.5 it the cpu usage went crazy again flying up and down the screen! but this is the 1st time this HAPPENED, im using the CS 1.5 for 5 days now and for the past 4 days everythings normal. im not sure if its the CS of the Spybot. i really havent got a clue.

(i havnt used that yet but maybe il figure it out if i needed to use that). thanks again for your help.CPU usage only spikes when there are background applications running. Ex. The windows you see Windows Task Manager uses alot of CPU well I have a 466mhz so it is alot for me. When you run an application or have applications that are providing real time protection it can cause the CPU on the screen to go up. THe refresh rate on it MUST be on normal so that is why you see the sudden jump so high. Also note while doing anything when you have task manger running can cause it to spike. As long as you are not opening and running applications and it does not stay at 100 % CPU for more then a minute everything should be fine.

i found whats causing it, its a bug in the CS ver1.5. and everything is cool now. thanks windows 98. i didnt know how to look at the taskmanager properly the 1st time thats why i cant find whats causing the spikes from *censored*, now i know. thanks again. and im sorry i known that earlier i shouldnt bothered you. thanks again.
