Solve : Buddy's PC Won't Recognise System Disk? |
Answer» Hi, I am attempting to reboot Windows ME onto my friend's crashed PC that was running Win 98 (90% sure it was win 98). The method of installation was through CD-Rom. The computer was searching the floppy drive for system files, but not the CD ROM drive. The Boot Sequence would only display this one prompt, and nothing else: I am attempting to reboot Windows ME onto my friend's crashed PC that was running Win 98. (90% sure it was '98). Download a '98se bootdisk image file and make up a new bootdisk, then go to www.burzurq.com and add Delindex to it and then boot to that. Choose Minimal boot and, at the prompt, type: A:\>dir /p What do you see? Are there any files on the drive? |

Solve : removing something that doesn't want to be removed? |
Answer» I had a ?? installed called Christmas Glow, it was a screensaver from Cloudeight, which I thought I had removed. Several sessions - 20 or 30 times each - a thing pops up on my screen, saying Christmas Glow data field does not exist and it has an OK button, it takes dozens of clicks to make them all go away. I have tried the install/uninstall program, and followed several help tips but ##**. Yes, I am stupid but that doesn't mean I can't follow directions, any help would be ssoooo appreciated. GwenDownload & run 'AUTORUNS' from http://www.sysinternals.com it will allow you to disable or delete any UNWANTED startup programs. Thanks for the info - I tried ... it asks which program I want to use - I picked Outlook - it wouldn't do it. So I picked Save and it's on my desktop but it won't work - it keeps asking me what I want to use to open it and nothing I try works. Remember I'm dumb - treat me that way. Since I first wrote this note I've had about 40 more of the "data file does not exist" things ... help..Autoruns downloads as a zip file so you will need to UNZIP it with winzip. |

Solve : Disk occupancy? |
Answer» I have two hard discs in my PC. one 20GB and the other 200GB. The 20GB capacity Disc is ‘C’ and is TOTALLY devoted to Windows XP Professional and all installed programs. I have two hard discs in my PC. one 20GB and the other 200GB. The 20GB capacity Disc is ‘C’ and is totally devoted to Windows XP Professional and all installed programs. First of all there is a difference between the manufacturer's Metric sizing and the binary size after formatting. The 20 GB drive is actually 18.6264514923 GB (18·63 GB) giving an initial 'difference' of 1.37 GB 11·30 + 7·28 = 18·58 , and , 20 - 18·58 = 1·42 System Restore hidden files probably. The 200 GB drive will be 186.26 GB binary. The industry standard for 1GB is 1024MB. Some manufacturers use a shortened specification of 1000MB so you would lose a chunk of size. Also your hard drive is 200GB from new, but when you format it you use a portion of the space for the Master Boot Record, Drive Mapping and recording of where the data is stored. A bit like an indices of where your data is when you save it. If you take a floppy 3.5". From the factory it is 2.12..ish MB but when formatted for use it's 1.44MB. Your hard drive is larger and so loses, in relation to it's size, that same amount of space.Yes, my calculations are based on an available of 18.58GB for the "supposed" 20GB Disk 'C'. Before making those calculations I selected the option for displaying ALLfiles INCLUDING the hidden ones and I added up all them. It's for me hard to believe that could be Sytem Restore hidden files TAKING over 4.2GB of useful space. If this were the case, is it possible to move them to other disk or to delete at least some of them? What are the makes and models, or are they both the same? It might have a hidden recovery partition. Is the difference the same at 4.2 GB ? |

Solve : XP reinstall failure.? |
Answer» I was hoping somebody could perhaps give me some help. My mom's Dell Dimension 2400 was experiencing extreme lag, so she decided to try reformatting it. However, she ran into some complications and couldn't complete the process. I tried taking a look, but I can't FIGURE out what the problem is. The computer is stuck in the middle of trying to reinstall Windows XP because it always fails. When I start it up, it prompts me to insert the Microsoft Windows XP: Home EDITION disc. After doing so, the computer starts installing, but it stops about halfway through and displays a message on a blue screen... A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If anyone can offer any suggestions, I would really appreciate it. I'd hate to have to take the computer in somewhere. Thanks.Have you disconnected all the peripherals so that their drivers are not trying to install? If not then do so and install the peripherals one at a time. Just for sake of elimination (and good practise) run MemTest86 on the RAM to look for errors, run the drive manufacturer's drive diagnostic diskette over the drive and make sure that the XP SP2 CD which you are using to do the install is scrupulously clean, unscratched and not cracked. If there are any doubts about the CD then make a working copy on a good quality CDR.BAD_POOL_CALLER Maybe one of these will help http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;314492 http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=309155 |

Solve : exe works outside batch file, not inside.? |
Answer» I have a fairly large FORTRAN 77/90 & C program, compiled using Compaq Visual Fortran 6 & MICROSOFT Visual C++ 6 under Win XP. On a particular test case it generally executes ok when invoked outside a batch FILE, but always fails when invoked from a particular batch file. It stops on a Fortran 90 Allocate statement, but does not return the STAT result coded into that statement. Seems to relate more to how much storage has been allocated rather than to the particular array being allocated, because I can reorder the allocation of different arrays and the stop does not occur on the same array. |

Solve : Laptop partition? |
Answer» Hi Group, Hi group, 40 GB (Metric size) = 37.25 GB (Binary size) System as 3? Do you mean that there is 3 GB used on the System volume C: or is there only 3 GB free-space on C: ? If you look carefully you will see if D: is sitting inside an Extended Partition shown by a green outline. You would need to delete D: and then delete the Extended partition first of all and then use a reliable partition re-sizer to extend C: the full size of the drive. If it was me I would move the My Documents and Email folders to the D: drive and see what space is left on C: then shrink the C: drive down to a reasonable size, make the Extended partition larger and then increase the size of the D: drive and make a drive image of the C: drive. Say... [10 GB C:]{[27 GigaByte Logical drive D:]} Where 10 GB = 10240 MB, and { & } is the extent of the Extended partition. As it is... [20 GigaByte drive C:]{[20 GigaByte drive D:]} Delete drive D: [20 GigaByte drive C:]{---------------------} Delete the Extended partition... [20 GigaByte drive C:] And make drive C: bigger... [ 37.25 GigaByte Primary C: as one partition] Hi Mac, Thanks for trhe comprehensive reply. Don't know how to make an image of the C which is what we are afraid of. Could we do it on the 40gig portable hard drive I have bought him. We are at the momentg putting anyrthing large and important on to it. Photos etc.Don't know how to make C drive larger after deleting the unwanted D. It would seem the best answer. Will the windows XP system stay ok on the C drive whilst this is going on or will i be with the image The Empty D is green surrounded. I thought it best to at least keep that free of anything and transfer anything important to the portable drive. Thanks for helping. Best wishes DaveHi Mac again, Is the last bit of your letter an alternative way of dealing with the situation. I know how to delete the D drive which is empty. How do I delete the extended partition ? How do I increase the size of the C drive to 37.? Would be an ideal way of getting what we want Best wishes DaveRight-click on the D: drive and choose 'Delete Logical drive' then right-click on the Extended partition and choose 'Delete Extended partition'. You will need a partition re-sizer such as is incorporated in BootIT NG (See links below) to increase the size of the C: drive or, if you make a drive image using Image For Windows first, you can delete the C: drive in the same way as above and make a new one using the full size of the hard-disk. But you - cannot - do that from Windows, you would have to use the XP CD to make the new partition and FULL format the drive, and when the install starts stop the install and commence restoring the drive image. Drive imaging is a whole subject on its own and you can download the manuals from the TeraByte Unlimited site, if I remember. If not then download the trial version, unzip them, and you'll find a .pdf Instruction Manual. If you make an image first with IFW or IFD so that your install is safe and then use BootIT NG's resizer you may be pleasantly surprised if it works for you. It should be alright (no guarantees) as you only have the single primary. Disconnect from the internet and uninstall the anti-virus program before re-sizing. You do NOT need to install BootIT NG so skip the install screens and go to the Partition Work button. For US$ I PAID for BootIT NG, with its Partition Resizer, Image for Windows (IFW) and Image for DOS (IFD). Very good value for money with excellent support and frequent updates. BootIT NG and IFD both run from a bootdisk. Note the time limitation for use of the trial version. |

Solve : ip address problems? |
Answer» i RECENTLY purchased qwest high speed dsl service and have been unable to connect with the service with my laptop. I am USING an ethernet cable to connect and my modem is in working order. Having gone through the help phone number with qwest, they have figured that the problem is in my computer. The dsl modem is unable to find my computer, it cannot find my ip address. I also have this problem when trying to use a wireless card, my card can pick up a wireless signal but my computer cannot connect to the network. After using msdos and running ipconfig, my ip address shows up as zeros across the board, I have also TRIED to manualy type an ip address into the network properties page and it continues to show zeros, i have also tried to repair the ip address. Any help would be greatly appreciatedDoner: ...After using msdos and running ipconfig, my ip address shows up as zeros across the board, I have also tried to manualy type an ip address into the network properties page and it continues to show zeros, i have also tried to repair the ip address. ... OK, that rules out this fix for a problem caused by SP2: HTTP://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;884020 When you say you have all zeros for an IP address, do you mean that when you type IPCONFIG /ALL at the command line you see an IP address of 0.0.0.0 and a subnet mask of 0.0.0.0? Also, please type this at the command line and tell me what you get: PING 127.0.0.1 Let me know, Doc You need to assign a SUBNET mask as well. Contact your ISP provider and have them tell you exactly what settings need to be filled out in the TCP/IP section of Windows XP and ask them what kind of software might need to be installed for your ADSL modem.Hey, Raptor, good to see your avatar again! I agree MICHAEL needs a subnet mask. What i'm thinking is that his NIC is bad, or his IP configuration needs to be changed. From what he wrote, i'm thinking his DSL modem is also a router/DHCP server and should be automatically assigning an IP address to the laptop. Doc |

Solve : Windows ME--serious problem? |
Answer» I can no longer get windows ME to load. Here is what happens: I TURN on the computer and wait for it to boot. Then I come to a screen where I can choose between RedHat 9.0 or "DOS," which is really windows. If I choose windows, it starts to load normally--the screen with the windows logo comes up and then my current wallpaper is displayed. After that, SCANDISK starts to run. Whether I let scandisk run or close it before it starts, this is as far as I get. Windows stops loading, and no icons or start button APPEARS. If I TRY Ctrl-Alt-Del, I am able to close the tasks (about four) that are running, all of which are not responding.Would turning the auto scan disk off do anything?1st Windows isn't DOS...2 different things. |

Solve : Video file format? |
Answer» Well, I've partially DOWNLOADED a VIDEO file before the link broken. I rename the downloaded part from *.dat to *.mpg but when I try to open it with Windows Media Player, it gives me this message: "The file you are attempting to play has an extension that does not MATCH the file FORMAT. Playing the file may result in unexpected behavior" The video plays as usual anyway, the only "unexpected behavior" is that I cannot FAST forward it. How can I know the file format so that I can put on a correct extension? If it's only a partial download I doubt it will work anyway. It can be played as usual and normal up to where the download stopped, except the fast forward problem. Just try to figure out the file type and extension problem.Anyone has any idea? |
