Solve : Video file format?

Answer»

Well, I've partially DOWNLOADED a VIDEO file before the link broken. I rename the downloaded part from *.dat to *.mpg but when I try to open it with Windows Media Player, it gives me this message:
Quote

"The file you are attempting to play has an extension that does not MATCH the file FORMAT. Playing the file may result in unexpected behavior"

The video plays as usual anyway, the only "unexpected behavior" is that I cannot FAST forward it.

How can I know the file format so that I can put on a correct extension? If it's only a partial download I doubt it will work anyway. It can be played as usual and normal up to where the download stopped, except the fast forward problem.
Just try to figure out the file type and extension problem.Anyone has any idea?
