Hi,
I'm having trouble with windows closing everytime i follow a different link. For example, from YAHOO Mail I click on a link that shows me a real estate listing. The Yahoo window closes & there is no back button to get to it. HOPE SOMEONE can help. I'm also having problems when there is an active back button available, but it won't respond when clicked on.

patio.  Many thanks.  Vsmon is ONE of the processes of the Zone Alarm Security Suite.  By the way, I've used the ZA PRODUCTS for years and have migrated from their FREE firewall to ZA Pro to the full Suite, and found them very satisfactory.  It eliminates nighmares that result from trying to RUN anti-virus from one vendor, firewall from another vendor, and anti-spyware from yet another.  Yes, it takes a lot of resources, but at least it runs smoothly.

What is the procedure of registering a new extenstion say for example  "*.SNL".

I want to use a file with this extension for a COMMERCIAL application, so I want to know if I can use it WITHOUT any restriction or do I have to check for copyright. Also on the other hand if I have to copyright this extension where can I register this and what is the procedure.

The computer that I am working on would only START up in start mode. I installed drivers for the NIC. Device MANAGERS looked good, Drivers there. Restarted, tried last KNOWN good config. That didn't help, I restarted, clicked system restore, that didn't help, swapped out NIC cards, (thought hardware issue) NOPE, reinstalled original NIC and drivers, restarted NOw I don't even see the start up or post beeps...just black screen

DocIt wouldn't start properly, then drivers, then after acouple of RESTARTS it was all black.The Video card died. Replaced it and all is well.

i have had my COMPUTER for a while, and I used to be able to FIX the problems by doing a system restore... now i get this pop-up whenever i log on, about EVERY 30 minutes, and if i leave my computer, they build up and freeze it, the pop-up is C:\WINDOWS\System32\WINCTR-1.EXEDisable system restore.....and re-scan pc for virus/trojans worm etc...... When finished I defragged the drive.
Tried to load Final Fantasy 11 for my son on the "G" drive.

Neither CD drives would work.  Went to device manager.  The drives have yellow circle with exclamation.

The D drive was a mitsumi CD-ROM FX 4824!B
The E drive was a sony CD-RW X210E1

We are CURRENTLY running Windows XP Pro.
You can try to system restore the computer. The Yellow ! indicates a driver Issue.Actually in XPPro you can just RITE clik those devices and choose remove...when you reboot it will auto-detect them and re-install the drivers.
I would suggest doing them one at a time.

Continuing from earlier post. . .

When I boot up and get the desk top ICONS on screen and attempt to access anything, Windows keeps popping up the windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to shut down.

I havent at this stage even accessed explorer.  When I click on the box to cancel it keeps popping back up and then GOES in a loop.  I have to manually shut down and try again.

Is there some way to access the startup string before the system boots up??   Is this information providing another clue as to what is going on here? oh, and I couldn't get AVG free before everything crashed again.This is what I originally posted, about a page back.

I'm RUNNING xp pro.  I need help.  Two days ago when I started up the computer, the desktop icons didn't load up. I rebooted and after 5 or 6 tries they APPEARED but didn't work.  I went to system restore and that didn't activate either.  All my documents and pictures appear to be gone.

allright so Ive had my xp for about a year and a half, and until now Ive taken pretty good care of it. Ive removed spyware, defragmented it, deleted unused files and RUBBISH programs the whole nine yards, But about two days AGO I noticed that everytime I checked the harddrive Its memory had lessened a little, on saturday all I had used was 10GB of memory, but today It says that Ive used 14GB of memory, I havent downloaded anything, so why this great increase of space used?

I think this may have happened while I was looking for porn on limewire (get over yourselfs, you do it to.) Anyway these zip files starting popping up all over the place so I deleted lime wire and the shared files. But this didnt help, my memory is still being slowly eaten.

Go into control panel and click on folder options. select the view tab ...and make sure you have show hidden files ticked .........then apply and ok ......
Next reboot into safe mode ......once in safe mode ......
Run a full SYSTEM scan with your anti virus , then run a full scan with SpyBot  , then run Adaware SE and then run M/S antispyware Beta .......
Delete anything that is found .......
Next go ito Internet options and delete all temp internet files  , delete all cookies and delete history .

Now have a look and see if you have recoved what was lost .

dl65  I did a virus scan on my computer and it found one virys, it was called bloodhound.w32.EP

I tried to delete it but it did not work, so what do I do take care of this virus?What Anti Virus software are you running?Did you run your virus scanner in safe mode with system restore turned off?

Just wondering if anyone knows how to repair the CMD interface on an xp home OS. My PING and tracert commands WONT work and i can only get into the COMMAND by using

cmd.exe
command.com

cmd will not work.

Any ideas on how to FIX this.

when i TRY to DOWNLOAD i get a MESSAGE that the compressed zip folder is corrupt or invalid. all of these files can't be bad, it must be a problem with my computer. please, please help.I would run MemTest86 overnight to see if there are any errors in the RAM modules causing DATA corruption.

Which operating system are you using?

Looks like a virus problem.I've been running Trend micro and its been in a holding pattern for 30 minutes at 99 percent finished scanning for spyware and waiting to start the virus scan.  

It GOT up to 99 percent in about 7 minutes, and sits at 99 percent finished.

I reloaded ms anti spyware and it found lots and now that seems handled.So is everything fine now.   Heck no, it seems to be getting worse.

I finally cancelled Trend Micros scan as it just sat there at 99 percent.  I TRIED to go back and just scan for viruses and not for spyware and then Explorer just froze up and then shut down completely.  I got back up and went back to Trend Micro and Now it wont even start the scan process, it just sits idle after I click on "start scan".

I feel very fortunate that I can still get here.

And something else new, the links posted here to get to other sites now don't work.  I have to type in the address and go there that way.

Explorer is shutting down more frequently too.

rudykDo the item in word........then save it to my docs........then reopen it in word .........now edit the file.....to whatever you chose to do.Change the date on your computer to an earlier time, then write the document & save it.
(Then change back to the RIGHT time)If you already have the document.

hey im having trouble with my computer. When i switch the power on the computer starts making this long buzzing sound and the fan goes off,  nothing appears on the screen. The monitor is on but it remains black. I have to keep switching it off, removing plug and reinserting it and try to get it working, Tonight it took me four attempts to start my computer! If it is an electric crackle can you smell burning? Can you see if the fans are running properly.

Check to see if the power connecting plugs are pushed fully home. (They should really have retaining clips.)

Either way be careful to avoid electric SHOCK to yourself  or static damage to the computer! Quote

Okay I have a COMPAQ that I only paid 595.00 for and it's  a year and a half old. Since I didn't give all that much for it I don't want to sink alot in it getting it repaired.

On Thursday night I tried to download music from WalMart.com. It prompted me to download a newer version of Media Player. I did and then my computer starting shutting down on it's own in the middle of stuff. I tried running spybot and adaware and it didn't find anything. I tried to run Norton AntiVirus but the computer wouldn't stay on long enough to let it run. I did system RESTORE and now I can't reinstall my Norton Antivirus..it says there is files missing. I also can't download updates from Microsoft because I keep getting error message and my internet won't work right. Alot of times I have to go to a webpage 3-4 times before the page comes up. The rest of the time I get a message that says page not found.

What is going on?? I have Windows XP by the way. The Microsoft site did let me run the Malicious software tool but it didn't find anything wrong either.

AmandaAlso, I just realized it's still freezing up for no reason. I mean it permanently freezes and I have to cut it off at the tower.So do you have a Windows CD or a restore CD? It may be so screwed up that is what is necessary. After a year and a half it might be a good idea anyway. Any important data that needs to be backed up?Have you tried getting into safe mode to test the system?
Does the system shut off and stay off or reboot itself?
Try leaving the systemin the BIOS for an hour to test it. If it doesnt reboot then it's most likely software related.

If you want to remove norton then download the symnrt removal tool: http://search.symantec.com/custom/us/query.html

It's norton's tool to remove itself. Then reinstall norton after a reboot.After it freezes up it will turn off and then restart on it's own. As far as I can remember it didn't come with a restore cd. There is just a program built into the computer that restores it.

AmandaBack up your data. It might be time.....I'll go by that Safe Mode option.

You can also try running a scan in safe mode if it allows you to.Can you get into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key as you start up to remove the Norton Anti-Virus and then re-install it, if the computer will boot back to the desktop?

What is the drive size?

How much RAM is fitted?

Which Processor does it have?

Have you used the Recovery system before?

How about doing a clean install to a partitioned drive and then making a drive image before adding any programs?

That way you can restore easily without having to rely on the Compaq recovery system.

The same can be said for all OEM installs.When was the last time you ran defrag?The file you downloaded may be taking up more space than necessary. If you defrag, (Clean up your storage) then it will free up space you obviously need. Then go into your CONTROL panel and try to install Norton again.
Good luck!!Well, you comp sounds so messed up I THINK you need a clean installation!!! But before you do that, are you able to back up your important files to a a disk such as a CD or another computer?

The other thing is always use a generic OS from Microsoft, not the one that comes wit your comp.

      my outlook express has gone funny , i use to RIGHT click on photo and then send , but now if i right click on photo NOTHING HAPPENS , i use to get the email box pop up so i could put recipients name in but that no longer happens so i can send ANYTHING , can anyone please help.

 i can actually send mail if i go into outlook express , its just that if i want to send any photo,s that i have taken i usually just right click and then click on send to , but now it wont do it. even if i do a shortcut.

also I have to power off the computer to restart. soft boot doesnt workMaybe you can TRY this, when you get to the BIOS, TURN anythinks that related to power manger off. Then when your PC boots up, GO to the Windows power manger(not the same as the BIOS power manger) and then turn everything off as well. Then reboot your PC.

BTW, does your video card  came with you PC pre-installed or is it a third party video card you installed youself?everything in this pc I bought and installed.

OK, im a bit of an NT newbie, but I have a small problem.  A customer has a server with NT4.0 and 8 other pc's with os ranging from 98 to xp hooked up to the server via a hub. Now they just had high speed internet connected to the server. The server uses a static ip and is connected straight to the router/modem combo. Now in order to connect to the network hub too a 2nd nic had to be installed. After the install of the 2nd nic the internet does not work. The ip, subnet MASK, and gateway are all correct. It is trying to use the proper nic as well. The 2nd nic installed for the hub is working FINE all pc's have access to the server's files. So any thought on why all of a sudden the internet is flaking out on me? I have tried all that i know how to do. ALSO once internet is restored any ideas on the easiest way to ALLOW the other 8 pc's internet access through the server? THANKS a TON for any thought or input here.

I had been having some problems with my Dell Inspiron Laptop lately. It would shut down on its own without my own doing. I figured I could have a virus or something so I tried to download the latest updates from Microsoft for Xp. I downloaded about 9 of them and the last one I was tryin to get was the SERVICE pack 2.  Since my computer turned off by its own, it didnt complete the download. I tried to turn it back on.. Through safe mode and I was told to unistall it.. Once I did this I was not able to connect to the internet through my cable modem as I usually do.. I called the Dell people and they ran through some solutions while none of them worked.. Right now I'm in safe mode. I have a feeling the reason why the internet wasnt workin in regular mode was b/c when I unistalled the Service Pack it messed with my configurations. If anyone has any ADVICE it would be GREATLY appreciated!  Thanks so much..

HOOAH!! Well a Service Pack from Microsoft will not help a "virus or something". Try a system restore, and if that doesn't work it's time for a reinstall of Windows.The laptop came with a CD containing all the system drivers. Did you try REINSTALLING them? Quote

Hello, i have an old compaq, i don't know what it is but it has windows xp home edition, everytime it boots up it says SETUP is being restarted, then it goes to this screen where it says safe mode in each corner and a box pops up and says windows xp cannot run under SAFEMODE, setup will restart now. i tried to f8 and go to run windows normally a few other ones i don't know what the *censored* is wrong with it but it is pissing me off. any help would be greatly appreciated. you could e-mail me too if you want. thank you
"old Compaq" doesn't mean much. What model/processor/RAM amount, etc. are we talking? Did it ever work right? What adware/spyware/virus solutions are in place, updated and being used? What happened just prior to all of this, etc.it is a compaq presario 7594 or something, i don't know the ram or the specs, i have the compaq QUICK restore disk, and the xp disk if you need anymore info just askDo you have any critical info on there you need to backup before we begin?no but if this helps when i try to put in the windows disk it comes up and says couldn't open drive multi0disk0rdisk0partition1, then ntldr: couldn't open drive and the same st of stuff at the end

Try the Last Known Good Configuration option of the Windows startup menu:

1. Press F8 after the power on SELF test (where the computer checks the memory, etc.) and before the Windows splash screen.
2. When the boot menu appears, choose the option to boot to the Last Known Good Configuration.
3. Windows will restore its registry to the state it was in the last time you were able to successfully log on.

If that doesn't work, let us know.  There are a few other things we may try to fix it.

Doci tried every thing on the boot disk menu it just KEEPS coming back to that windows xp cannot run under safemide. setup will restart now, screen,  and it won't read the compaq quick restart disk or the windows xp program?

I have Windows XP, Home Edition.  I have noticed that I no longer have Character Map, Calculator, the Solitaire games that comes with Windows.  These APPLICATIONS are the ones I've noticed gone, there may be more.  All my other applications are running great, no other problems.  The tech from my computer manufacturer told me I needed to do a "Repair Installation(Windows XP Already Installed)", and then pointed me to a support page that instructed me how to do it.  I looked at the INSTRUCTIONS and it looks like something that should only be done by a person with a computer programing degree!  Is a "Repair Installation" NECESSARY for this issue?  I don't want to screw everything else up just to get these applications back that I really don't need, but would like.  Thanks for any help you can give me!If you open Control Panel, Add or Remove programs, Add /Remove Windows Components...

All of the applications that are shown in the final "Window" of your post are present and checked, but are still not showing up in my Start/Programs/Accesories.  Could it be that they are still there, just the short cuts missing?  Thank you.

I need help!!  My computer monitor is READING Phoneix Files and won't let me do anything using the mouse.  Does anyone know what I should do?  Or what I need to do?  I thought maybe it was in safe mode...I don't understand Phoenix Files, unless you are referring to the BIOS. If you are in the BIOS as GX1_Man suggests then your mouse has no function - you have to USE the four arrow keys on your keyboard and the F# keys to navigate.Hello!  I LOOKED up a few things.  I was able to get into CMOS during Setup and hit F5 which is setup and then saved and exited CMOS.  The computer rebooted and loaded Windows, so I thought it was fine.  Then when I tried to defrag it LOCKED up on me again.  It's freezing up.  So, I went through the process again and now the monitor only stays on for a second and then keeps going off.  Someone said it might be a video card.  What do you think?Does it beep on boot..........

Your autoexec.nt file MAY be corrupt. You can retrieve a copy from the repair directory.

Well, put my cpu to standby last NIGHT and went to bed. I wake up this morning and there's a voice saying "System Failure (and another word I can't make out)", and my cpu is on. I turn it off for about an hour, turn it on, and it doesn't make the noise, but there's something wrong. It starts up and (I think the fan) starts making a noise like a bee. If anyone has any idea what the problem is, please give me some advice on how to solve it. If you need any more info, please ask.

Tell us more....If you put your system back into standby does the noise STOP?
If you go into BIOS does the noise stop?

These steps turn off certain fans in your system.
Fan's making a noise either means the bearings are going and its running slightly off BALANCE or a CABLE inside is catching the fan.
Could be system fan, cpu fan or vga fan if it has one.

Try tilting the system..carefully and not full TILT!..if the noise stops then its probably a cable catching.What language is this voice speaking?

hi im having some problems with xp when i installed a game recently it asked me to change my display SETTINGS to true color (32 bit)  this i would have THOUGHT was relitivly simple to do  but on my settings true colour (32 bit) just doset appear is there a way to get this setting or can i change my settings to show it  Update your video card drivers and check to make sure that your monitor refresh RATE is GOOD enough. Or just adjust the monitor COLORS.

Hello all, does anyone know how if it's possible to install device drivers from a batch file in WinXP?
I know services uses aprogram called sc.exe that's easily configured in a command window/batch file.
(example = sc config MESSENGER start= disabled>nul will TURN off that little messenger that pops adds up on the computer).
Is there an exe that device manager uses to install hardware, & is it configurable?I think you're barking up the wrong tree here. That's not how the Windows sytem works.o.k. It's for an unattended install. Trying to do a silent install of my network card  but the normal WAYS like $oem$ folders & winnt.sif don't work for me, don't know why. Both winnt.sif & %oem$ work great for everything else, just not installing drivers. So for now, the only drivers installed silently are the ones with their own installers. I was hoping that device manager could be controlled with a batch file. Maybe just telling it to automatically search for drivers.Device Manager is more for managing devices. The Add Hardware Wizard has more to do with installing software and drivers for new hardware.cool, can it be USED with batch files?

1. Right-click on an icon
2. Choose Properties from the context menu
3. In the SHORTCUT's properties dialog box, select the Shortcut tab
4. In the Run list box, click the down arrow and choose Maximized from the list
5. Click Apply and OK

From now on, the program will open maximized (i.e., full-screen sized).

Hope that answers your question.

So here I go:
USB drivers are inbuilt in Win XP and above, so we just have to plugin our USB devices and it works.
For 98, we have to install the drivers.
Not compatible with NT.

Am i right?

I have a phone, etc with Bluetooth which will fit with Usb on the other side. The instructions says only for XP and up. ( Not for 98 and NT - stated ).

So why are they giving the drivers CD with it?
I am unable to comprehend this.

I was confusing between connection and communication.

Usb is a way to connect and not to communicate. Righto.

Basic things like disk drives do well without driver but others require.

They can however be corrupted along with other aspects of your OS. It may be just a symptom. Things just don't mysteriously vanish and quit working. Then you may in fact need to reinstall Windows. Duh-Duh   The OS comes with a data base of drivers supplied by Microsoft at time of release.

Manufacturers have updated these drivers or released their own software since the release of XP (other OS' have drivers just not necessarily USB), hence the need to install the drivers still.

If it wont work without the manufacturers software it just means the OS hasn't got those necessary to run it.

No the LED should go off as it only comes on when detecting a connection, but if you are still GETTING downloads then the connection seems to be ok.

Have you changed/added any firewall settings?Not necessarily. It might be a power LED which means if there is stillpower to the modem/router.

I re-installed Windows XP Pro on my dads machine and I have the modem hooked up to his computer but No internet. I'm sure I'm missing important steps, but like I said, networking is not my thing. Please help me.

Did you setup on the Home Network using the Wizard First? Second did you check the firewalls to allow connection and 3rd are all the protocolls setup with your device?You say networking - how many pc's do you have CONNECTED?
Is it your dad's system that wont connect to the internet?
What error message does IE GIVE you when you try and connect?
Does the modem GET the adsl light lit ok?
Did you install the internet connection from the ISP's disc?
You mention in your list Gateway - are you using a broadband modem or router?

I think i have a pretty big problem atm. (running Win XP Pro)

Everytime i boot my computer i get the:

'We appologise for the inconvenience but windows did not start succeccfully" with the 'safe mode OPTIONS' 'last known good config' and 'start windows normally'.

WELL when i select either 'start windows normally' or 'last known good config' options it comes on to a blue screen quick and goes of STRAIGHT away soi carnty see what it says and the computer restarts everytime!:( if i try any of the safe modes. I just get masses of code saying stuff like 'Multi(0)Rdisk'.

So i tryed reinstalling windows on that computer. But it wouldnt let me even successfully format it, when it got so far i got a blue screen appearing windows error one.

So i then tryed reinstalling windows on it from another computer and it worked no errors. and the it booted fine from the other pc.

When i took it back to my pc nothings changed having the same problems.

So does any one know what they think it could be. Motherboard? Bios? HD?

I carnt see how it could be the HD though as it works on the other computer. But i ALWAYS thought it was windows that made the blue screen errors.

Please help me.

Bad idea since the computer hardware from one computer is diffrent from another computer. Btw what does the error say on the blue screen? You only get that one error? 
Well man, I think I hade the same problems with my PC, I did not know what to do! I've done all those what you've said, I was also sure the CD is good but i lied myself. Try with other CD ! that is my opinion. I have checked all the RAM is in place properly etc.

When you post please give much more info - like what laptop you are using, the operating system, how much ram and , in this case, which game is being installed.

The error message you give could be generated for a great number of reasons, like the hard-disk failing, insufficient space on the hard-disk, an attempt to write to a non-existent address etc...   There's a ton of info on the WWW - please Google it.

What OS are you running ?
Is C: the only Hard drive/partition you have?
You cannot format C: from C:

Grab a WinME bootdisk from bootdisk.com.
Extract the file to a clean floppy.
Then BOOT with the floppy in the machine.
At the A: prompt type format C: /u and hit enter.

You do realise you will lose all your data on C: by doing this ?
