Solve : Fixing Corrupt Winsock Files??

Answer»

I recently lost the ability to connect to the internet via my desktop.  I called my internet provider and after a few diagnostics they concluded that I had corrupted Winsock files, and they would offer no further assistance.

I guess I have two questions.  First, does this diagnosis sound reasonable?  Second, if so, how do I fix it?

I searched on the internet and found a program called winsock xp fix but that didn't work.

Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Thanks,
AaronWhat happened prior to this event? What type of ISP do you have? Is the computer networked in ANYWAY? Could anyone have done something mischievous to it?Nothing significant prior to shutdown, just stopped working one day.  ISP is Time Warner Cable.  I have a wireless network to connect on my laptop, but even when I bypass the router and connect straight from my cable modem to the desktop I get the same problem.

Thanks,
AaronTry this:

http://www.wedoc.com/tcpip.htm

or this:

http://compnetworking.about.com/b/a/193505.htmI had this same problem present itself on a client's Win98 (on dialup) machine that I finally resolved yesterday.

Initially, the problem started as a runtime error EVERY time she attempted to use IE. I went over, resolved the runtime error, installed updated versions of Spybot and Ad-aware, ran them, and when I left internet appeared to be working. I also installed AVG, and removed NortonAV as her Norton was outdated and she didn't want to pay them for further service. She's on dialup.

I get an email the next day saying that she could use her email, but she couldn't access the net at all. (this turned out not to be entirely true, but based on her description, I mistakenly assumed it was a DNS server problem).

I returned for a second visit after CONFERRING with her ISP technician, who assured me there should be nothing wrong with her DNS resolution, that it must be a faulty phone line. True, regardless of whether I pinged her ISP with the IP address or the name, the ping showed good results. (no lost packets, no timed out errors). Browsing the web produced intermittent results, regardless of what browser I used. If I rebooted the machine it would connect and browse, but after clicking a few links it would stop responding. I also installed and ran RegCleaner and Stinger. No viruses found, and only some minor stuff picked up by RegCleaner, which I removed.

While at the client's residence, I contacted her ISP tech again, who proceeded to tell me she could hear static on the phone line, and she was pretty adament that it was the client's phone line causing the problem. About this time the client informs me they have a dental appointment and that we have to leave in a couple minutes. No further extensive testing was possible, so I had to return yesterday to finalize everything.

On my last visit I ran some further ping tests by running

ping www.(her_isp).net -n 50

which sends 50 pings instead of the usual 4. I tried changing phone cords and outlets and found as much as 16% loss of signal in one result. I settled on the most stable connection, which wasn't the original connection, and continued. This is what else I did:.

- backed up her registry and .ini files by using .bat files
- installed a fresh version of her  vbrun .dll files
- installed and ran winsock fix to reset her TCP/IP protocol and dial-up networking
- removed some old program POINTERS that RegCleaner had left behind (Norton and Zonealarm even though neither was being used or loading on startup)
- installed/ran HijackThis, and deleted an unecessary browser helper object that it found
- tested Internet Explorer and Firefox browsers by visiting numerous websites
- ran a speed test (www.toast.net) which showed her connection was very slow (not surprising)

After all that, the internet connection worked very well, and I was ABLE to consistently open new webpages with no undue freezing (except when loading pages with large images).

That's probably a whole lotta info you don't need to know, but it got the issue resolved, and part of that resolution included using the program winsockfix located at:
http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257

Client's machine is working fine now.

Could u plz guide me where i should go and make changes?BIOS's version and date is "4.15 PG, 3/15/1999"

does this mean BIOS is out of date?No most BIOS versions can commonly be a few years older than the system.

Hey arti,  I don't know if you ever got this problem resolved, but i was living with having to power off my PC by hitting the power switch on my power supply for a few weeks after upgrading to XP.  Windows shut down as it should but the PC wouldn't power off, although it used to with 98 2nd edit.  I found a topic called "computer does not shut down" in the 'computer hardware' FORUM that had a link to a site where I found a solution.  Link is

http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm

Look under "Powerdown Issues" on that page.  There I found the solution that worked for me.  I quote it below:

"When Windows XP won’t powerdown automatically, the APM/NT Legacy Power Node may not be enabled. To enable this, right-click on the My Computer icon, click Properties | Hardware | Device Manager | View. Check the BOX labeled “Show Hidden Devices.” If it’s available on your computer, there will be a red X on the APM/NT Legacy Node. TRY enabling it and SEE if this resolves the powerdown problem (Tip from Terri Stratton). Or, to check the other side of the APM/ACPI coin, open the Power Options applet in Control Panel. If there is an APM tab, make sure the “Enable Advanced Power Management Support” box is checked. (MSKB 313290)"

Maybe this will help.

Solve : frozen computer....NEED HELP?

I have a HP with Windows 95 and the screen has a message that reads " Invalid system disk replace the disk and then press any key. After doing this it just repeats the message. I've tried CTRL+ALT+DEL and it shows a different screen for a few seconds and then goes back to the Invalid system screen. I've also tried to reboot and hold the F8 key to get to safe mode , but that doesn't work either. Any IDEAS?
Thanks
Zeeman49try the f5 key on BOOT......for safe mode.

do you a floppy disk stuck in the floppy DRIVE? check it.No disks anywhere but that's what it's acting likeIf there is no floppy in there, then I suspect you will find that the hard drive has bit the dust. Did anything happen to this BEFOREHAND? How old is the machine (and trhe hard drive)?Another thing that will create this condition is a weak/failing CMOS battery...part # CR2032, available just about anywhere they sell batteries.
It is EASY to replace, just take your time, make sure you are grounded and unplug the machine from all power sources.

Solve : Low Connectivity?

Answer»

I can't seem to connect to 'anything' upon pressing Internet Explorer icon after logging on to my laptop.  Used to notice 'low connectivity' message on icon on bottom right and X through computer icon.  Checked modem with my carrier and they say it is fine.  Dell thinks it is mother board.  Please help.Hi Nancy,

Dell (support) are CRAP....sorry but they are!
You are getting the same message as thousands of other people.

It's a fault in XP that sometimes loses the connection, I take it you are wireless...not personally obviously!

Try doing a hard reboot on your router if you have one.
There is a hack for this fault somewhere but I haven't found it yet.
Also just try right clicking the network icon in your notification area by the clock and selecting repair. Should keep things moving long for you.

I will post when I have.

Jim
I am not wireless.  Yes, I was having some trouble with Dell support and the person did mention that it might be XP.  So what is the point of the Dell repairman coming to replace the mother board (or whatever it is  called)? If you have a wired connection the ethernet port (where you plug the network cable into) on the rear of the computer usually has an LED to show it is functioning.

Try right clicking this icon with the cross and selecting repair.
If that doesnt help, remove the cable, re-start your pc and then plug it back in.
Go into Control Panel> Network Connections> and make sure your Local Area Connection is enabled - if not right click and choose 'enable'.

Oy!  I think I am really confused.  The woman at Dell was trying to find something called TCP or whatever in the protocol screen.  I told her that I did not have those letters.  She insisted it must  be there.  I'm sure it is supposed to be there but it was not.  Sorry if I sound like an idiot but I am kind of new to all this.  I'm learning.Nancy S.......

Abbreviation of Transmission Control Protocol, and pronounced as separate letters. TCP is one of the main protocols in TCP/IP networks. Whereas the IP protocol deals only with packets, TCP enables two hosts to establish a connection and exchange streams of data. TCP guarantees delivery of data and also guarantees that packets will be delivered in the same order in which they were sent.

dl65  My gosh!  You should work for Dell support.  I could not understand a single thing this woman at Dell was telling me.  All I can say is that I hope the new Mother Board or whatever it is will fix the problem.  (Highly doubtful, though)Was that Dell woman from Calcutta perhaps?

Those were my thoughts, as well.  Just pathetic.Hi Nancy,

Your problem can be attriubted to a flaw in SP2 in XP. Follow this link for a patch to fix it, it's a Microsoft KB update.

Oh no, not another one !!!!!I tried downloading that patch but it did not seem to help.  (Unless I did it wrong)  I am so frustrated by now.  Dell technician came yesterday and replaced the motherboard, all to no avail.  Then Dell support had me reconfigure everything and reinstall.  What a pain.  They then told me to CONTACT my ISP to re-establish the connection, which I did but still nothing.  Now my ISP will be coming by tomorrow to give me a new cable box, etc.  If that does not work, I don't know what else to do.  Could it be the network card or port on the laptop?  HELP!Are there any yellow exclamation points on Control Panel/System/Device MANAGER?Yes.  All the time. Each of those exclamation marks SHOWS a problem that needs to be addressed.  If one of them is by your ethernet, then that alone will keep you off the internet. You will have to reload the drivers for those DEVICES, or fix the problems as indoicated.

What specific devices? Did you reload the drivers after installation? Do you have a Dell driver CD?

What model of machine again?

Solve : Erase network settings?

Answer»

The computer I'm using at work used to be part of a network and now when I log in I get 3 error messages  telling me that there is no DOMAIN found.  I just click OK to get through them but it gets very annoying.  Where do I find the route that it's following to erase all mention of the old network?  I've looked in CMOS and BIOS but didn't recognize anything as looking foreign.what does this command do.......in the msdos/cmd PROMPT

                                    netJewel:

1. Right-click My Network Places (Network Neighborhood in Windows 98) and select Properties from the menu

2. In the My Network Places Properties window, right-click on the network connection you are no longer using and choose the Delete menu item.

3. When the message box asks if you are sure you want to delete, click Yes.

Let us know how it goes,
DocDoc:

Thank you so much.  It did work although, like the blonde I am, I just got RID of EVERYTHING in the network properties so the computer did a bunch of work moving some of the files to my profile.  Then, when I rebooted, it still asks for a domain name so I filled in a few letters that I'd seen before and it says that the domain was not found.  Scared me for a moment or two because I thought I couldn't get back in at all.
I sure appreciate the help!

Solve : Booting up- problem?

Answer»

Hello.... I'm a newbie here so be gentle. My name is Julie and I am a computer addict.

Okay... got any free advice?

Day before yesterday I installed a new hard drive WDC, 80 GB, partitioned C & D) on my PC and then installed the old one as a slave in order to get all my data off of it, SINCE I think it's going bad. It would not boot up past the Dell splash screen. After some dithering around I figured out that I had neglected to change the new WD HD from "cable select" to "master"- once I did that it was okay. Booted up fine; WinXP okay, etc.

And now it is doing it again. I don't even have all my programs & things installed yet; I was SAVING that job for the weekend.

I turned it on this MORNING. And it went to the Dell splash screen… and once again hung there. And hung there, and hung there.

Maybe it’s just taking awhile, I thought, so I l putzed around doing other stuff for about 5-7 minutes. But when I came back in, it was still at the Dell screen. Aw, %$#&!!!

I did a manual REBOOT- or, I should say, a turn-off and back on, since the tower does not have a reset button- and it did the same thing… hung there at the Dell screen. It hung there again for over 5 minutes. I finally gave up. I was getting mad and I have high blood pressure.

I went to the back of the computer and peered at it, seeing nothing amiss.
I finally thought Well, I’ll try and get into the system setup or BIOS or whatever, and more out of desperation than anything else, turned off the power at my APC battery backup thingie. I waited a minute and let the dang thing stew, then turned it back on. It went up to the Dell screen and I was going to hit the Del key, but it got out of the Dell screen and then booted the rest of the way up normally.

After that I left it on. I had to leave for work. I have no idea why it’s doing this, if it will do it again, or what I can do about it.

Do you think it would help if I took the old HDD back out? Could it be the motherboard (shuddering)?

I'm totally out of ideas.

---------------------------
System Info:
Dell Dimension 4400 1.7 GHz, 384 MB RAM
WinXP Home, SP-2

Thanks!

Julie Dell's are really particular about having BOTH hard drives jumpered to cable select (CS). The primary drive should then be on the connector farthest from the motherboard. I think this will cure all of the problems. (Except the dying drive MAY continue to wither)I'll give that a shot as soon as I get home!
Thanks a lot!I pronounce you cured.

Solve : Right-click problem in Windows Explorer?

Answer»

Hello Folks,

I am running Windows XP Home with SP2 on a family PC with several users.
I have a problem with Windows Explorer that affects only some users.  If I right-click a file (for example to rename) the explorer window locks.  The only way to close the window after that is from the Task Manager.

If I create a new user from a normal account with administrator privilages.  The problem is evident from the start.  However, if I create a new user from the Admistrator account the problem is not there.

Any ideas? It looks like that the profiles of some of the users have got corrupted.

Try deleting it.
On relogging they will be automatically recreated. Thanks vibhor_agarwalin,

I understand when you say that some of the user profiles may be corrupted, but that doesn't explain why the new user I created from a working account came up with the same problem.

When you say "Try deleteing it", I assume that you mean the user profile and not the whole user account.  I have never deleted a user profile.  Can someone explain how I GO about this.

Thanks.

Just go to "Documents and Settings"

There you will find a folder corresponding to each User.

Regarding your creating of new users, if the profile of hte user from which you are creating new users is corrupted, hten you don't konw what could happen.

I am just guessing here.
Lets SEE what happens. Quote

Hey, that was scary!

So I deleted the said folder, without first checking that "My Documents" was sitting in there.
It's just as well that I'm a backup freak and was also running Roxio GoBack.

Everything is back to how it was now.

By the way, the re-created user profile (before I ran GoBack) still had the right-click problem.

Anyone ELSE go any ideas? My Documents was a thing you should backup.

Sorry i forgot to point it out, anyway but you had the backup.

So after recreating the profiles you still have the problem, lets see what can be done.

Mmmmm

No idea

Solve : Wireless Network Adapter?

Answer»

I got a question...

I'm getting a new PC and this time its going to be away from the router so I need a Wireless Network Adapter.

What's the difference betweem 54Mbps one and a 108Mbps one?

I was told that that would not affect online gaming, is that true?

(My router is a turbo US Robotics router, 108Mpbs I think.)

ALSO, what's more reliable? A USB dongle, a PCI internal or one of the stand alone ones?
If you are going wireless and want the 108 speed, you are best to stick with the same manufacturer and capability as the route. 54 will work with ANYONE's equipment (some easier than other's) as it is a COMMON standard. The faster speeds are proprietary. US Robotics is more likely to offer help if you buy two of their products, rather than a PCI NIC from someone else.

You will not see a speed BOOST in gaming. Your signal can only carry so much data from the net.

PCI internals are the least conspicuous, but there is some pointing capability that is lost. The USB ones are limited by the USB speeds as well.

I would go for a PCI card, but it's your call. A cheap one may work as well as a $100 one. Just remember that.use a wireless adapter card for you laptop....plus a wireless router.........Currently a wireless router and a desktop...

What is the significance of the 54/108 speed? What's the speed for?

I'm thinking about picking up the 54mpbs D-Link or Netgear USB dongle for $20.
The more mbps for the buck is better? what isp connection have you got? adsl/sat/cable/dial up........I would go for the card but that will work.  Cable.
In a wireless network, mixing different speed devices will usually result in the network running at the speed of the slowest device. This will only affect your internal network and will not change the internet speed. With the PCI card, you will have (or should have) the option of connecting an external antenna if necessary to improve connection speed. Literally everything in the transmission path between devices has an effect on wireless. Do not place the computer under a desk, in a cubby hole, or on the floor. It should be on the desktop and the wireless router should be placed as high as is practible.Nice one 2k?

If that is some sort of recovery partition you may need that to restore from a CD. I am assuming they didn't give you a "real" Windows CD. How about calling them and asking what that partition is for?

Fujitsu MHH2048AT 4.5 gb
Windows XP Home (upgraded from 98 I suspect because all the compaq stuff is still on the hard disk)

I use sysprep images to cut down the time it takes to INSTALL windows. I do this often without problems. So I have a 12gb drive I am trying to use in the compaq, it's specs are:

Hitachi DK23AA-12 12 gb (from a IBM thinkpad A20m)

I copied over my sysprep partition using Acronis disk director to the 12gb drive and put it in the compaq. After post I get a blank screen with a blinking cursor. I put the 12gb in another compaq laptop (persario 3000) and it booted into win xp fine. Next I balnked the 12gb drive, thinking something might be left over from the thinkpad, and STARTED over. This time I checked the bios first. After post but before going into bios I GOT this message:

Save to disk file not found ... etc.

I found out this was refering to a way compaq used to do hibernation before it became part of XP. So I copied the "SYSTEM_SAV" partition from the old 4.5gb disk to the 12gb disk thinking the machine was looking for someting there. Still only getting blinking cursor. Next I blanked the 12gb again then copied both original partitions from the 4.5gb drive to the 12gb. This time, booting from the 12gb, I get this message:

NTLDR is missing ...

So I downloaded fixntldr from here (this site rocks!) and got the original win xp home partition to boot running on the new disk. So what I'm trying to figure out is what is missing from my sysprep image that is keeping it from booting on the 1800t and yet boot on another laptop. It should work, both laptops use the same hal and the  boot.ini is correct. Anyone have any knowledge about EARLY compaq bios, I suspect it is looking for something not part of my sysprep image.

Solve : Directory Listing.?

Answer»

Okay,

Suppose i have a directory structure

A/B/C/D
Inside it i have more directories.

Now i have to take a listing:
I do
dir /b/s

Now comes the problem:
This listing is like
A/B/C/D/a.txt
A/B/C/D/E/a.txt
A/B/C/D/E/F/a.txt
A/B/C/D/E/F/G/a.txt

I want the output like
a.txt
E/a.txt
E/F/a.txt
E/F/G/a.txt

How can i do it.You would have to parse each directory entry USING the FOR statement and using the backslash as a delimiter. Should be fun when the paths contain various levels of nesting:D I'm not SURE where you're going with this but file names include the drive, path,  filename and extension. Partial paths are only practical when using relative path addressing. (. and ..)

Happy Computing. The thing is that:

I have a huge directory structure and i have to prepare a listing of that.

If i do that with the help of simple dir /b/s then the entries scroll down to next line and on copying to a text editor they are not in same line.

With for loop also i don't THINK this can be achieved.
Because how do you set the delimitor if you don't know how many backslashes you will get.Using the backslash as the delimiter is the easy part. You could either run a massive directory list and count the largest number of backslashes or just take an educated guess and see what results. You can always account for more or less tokens.

Something like this would account for up to 10 levels of nesting:

Code: [Select]
for /f "tokens=1-10 delims=^\" %%a in ('dir * /s /b') do (
  echo whatever
)

Starting backwards from the last defined variable (%%j in this example), you would have to check each variable for blanks, and echo back the last three (or whatever) variables that are not blank.

Question: Why are you using so many NESTED levels in your structure?

Good luck. I have already explained the problem.

I think its a practical situation in real life.
Wouldn't you be having a directory structure with about 10 levels of nesting.

And you want to prepare a list of it. But want only a certain hierachy of it.

Solve : Impedimemt MSN Search Toolbar Installation?

Answer»

Downloaded routinely the 8+mb Search Task Bar program, but unable to Install. Box
says ASVAP32.dll is linked to ConnectStringSecurityDescriptor TO SecurityDescriptorW.

I hope one of you geniuses understands this because its far beyond me.

The MSN Search icon is on my Desktop, but unusable:   Error creating process c:\windows\temp\IXP000.TMP\setup.exe.
Reason, a device attached to the system is not functioning.

Went to FIND, Searched MSN Toolbar. Result: 561 files Found.
At Open  MSN Toolbarsetup en_us,   Result: Newer version already installed.

I'm looking for a means to make searching my emails easier, and this certainly seems
to be it. Will appreciate specific info/path to get rid of the IMPEDIMENT to the
Installation. Please bear in mind my inexperience. Put at its best, I'm a computer
novice.

I don't recommend any kind of accessory such as this. Can you uninstall it in Control Panel, download it again and reinstall? (If you must)Thank you. Two Questions:

1. Basis of reco not to use it? (I'll certainly follow your advice if need be.)

2. What do you reco that will enable me to find specific email beyond the date/type/etc. at top of email form? All of those add ons, toolsbars are just BEGGING for spyware/adware/virii. As a general rule I do not. Those are "enhancements" I can live without, ALTHOUGH some here like the google toolbar.

How about a dedicated e-mail program, or are you all web-based e-mail?What is a dedicated email?
I suppose I have an all web based, etc.
I've simply used Hotmail since I started using the internet.
(Must signoff now but will check again first THING tomorrow -- here in France it's 6pm)
Thank you.

Solve : Glitchy Screen?

Answer»

Hi I just got a somewhat new computer, very nice and all new hardware but one problem, when the computer is doing nothing it is using about 20% of the processor and the SCREEN is somewhat glitchy.  It's hard to explain but about every second the screen freezes for a split second and then goes back to normal.  I have no idea what's going on so I tried to run it in safe mode, and that helped get rid of the glitchyness but it STILL took a minuit or two to start programs and such.  Please help or give a suggestion of what I can do to fix this, it never used to be this way and then just STARTED acting strage.

PS I also have the newset version of Norton's and there are no known viruses on the machine. Is the glitchy monitor new? Did it ever work right? If so, then what happened?

Are your video drivers up to date? Does this monitorr work OK on other computer's? Do other monitors look OK on your computer?

More info, please,  especially for "glitchiness", which is open to definition.

20% when it's idle?

Is your computer clean?

Free online virus scan

Free online spyware scan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/spyxposer/com/spyxposer_principal.htmYes, this monitor works fine with other computers and other monitors work the same on this glitchy machine, all the drivers are up to date.

It just seems like SOMETHING is running in the BACKGROUND using so much of the processor that it cant even display the pointer on the desktop without the computer getting what looks like 2 fps.And what did you find when you followed Fed's advice?

Solve : can you leave computer turned on and connected to?

Answer»

for some reason myy computer takes forever to log on to INTERNET.  is it ok to leave computer turned on and logged on to internet at all times.  after awhile the computer goes to SLEEP.  will this hurt the computer to be left onDo you have a dialup connection? your provider may cut you off.

Do you have cable//dsl? That does not require any kind of wait to connect.  It is always on.The longer your computer is CONNECTED to the internet the longer a hacker has to get into it. The FBI advise that you should never leave your computer running when you are not using it.

That is the official advice.

Solve : Clean Slate?

Answer»

I need to wipe a drive clean so I can reformat it (don't ask)
Windows XP SP2 will not load, so I made it a slave drive on another computer and want to reformat it before putting it back in the other PC
any freeware out there that will help?
Thanks guys! :-/If it's jumpered correctly and recognized in machine #2 then you can right click on it and format it in MyComputer (whichever drive letter it shows up as). If you try to load Windows on it there and then TRANSFER to a new computer you will probably have no joy.

If you copy over the i386 files to the freshly formatted drive, you can probably load it from there but why can it not load Windows normally is the question.

Now it is saying that the drive is not formatted (it is calling it Drive E, the slave drive) I clicked OK to format it and it went all the way through the procedure and then said it could not be formatted. WHat now? What happened when you originally tried to load XP normally?

I am interested in what has happened to this poor drive.

You can boot with a Win98SE boot disk (free at www.bootdisk.com) and run FDISK to delete the partition(s) and then create one (You will need to make it a primary partition and make it active)It is my wifes computer (we live in Rio de JAneiro) This machine was bought from someone who builds computers from scratch and sells them We have had problems and recently it was REBOOTING every half hour or so for no reason. I had this problem awhile back and changed the ram and cooler and fixed it. Well it came back, now I can't be sure if it is a bug in the hard drive or what. I, Myself have an Emachine, a bit old, but decent computer for the price. The only working copy of Windows XP I have was the Emachine software. I hooked up the HD from her's to mine as a slave and reformatted it using this CD. WHen I went to put the HD back in her machine, it gave e the blue screen of death and would not boot up. Now I put the HD back in mine as a slave and tried to use a Win XP version that I had downloaded off Limewire and it is giving me this CORRUPTION MESSAGE, I know, I know... I am crazy, but I live in Brazil, what can I say, it is not the civilized world and we SOMETIMES have to mke due with what we have. I will try what yo said, I am not desperate, yet. Sorry, but we cannot help with pirated versions of Windows.

If you really want a clean slate buy a legitimate version.

Remember that there are free versions of Linux all over the place.

Click the link below for more info.Yep, if it was made for an eMachines restore it most likely will not work (reads from the bIOS, etc.) and even if you got it working it would not be a legal copy and would not work after 40 days anyway with the Microsoft Activation. I think the previous advice was good.

how about some free linux???

Solve : Unistalling Napster?

Answer» http://I used Napster for a few days until I was hipped that .99 a song was a burn. I tried to uninstall via Control Panel and it starts  but then shoots up a message that " I am attempting to INSTALL a newer version over a old version, please go to the control panel and delete the OLDER version"
I have deleted the files that refer to napster thru a search in EXPLORER, but that damned reference is still in my program list! Any suggestions?? :-/System restore to a pre-napster date, if it has just been a few days?nO, ITS BEEN LIKE A MONTH.Hace you installed other software since then? You may have to reinstall that.

Are you free of adware/spyware/virii?I believe I am. I run spybot and EZTrust AV & Firewall. I scan routinely also. I am afraid that if I go back too far for a restore I'll get SOMETHING messed up. Plus, I did a search on my drive for "napster*.*" and found nothing, but control panel still lists Napster as being there. Its no big deal, just an annoyance. If you want it gone, you will have to EDIT the registry and remove any references to Napster. If you just deleted the files without a proper uninstall, it doesn't know what to do. There is now no uninstall program.

Hi everyone
I hope that anyone or someone can help me?
I am using windows 98 second edition and my problem is this, when I am in a window session my application frezzes up and a hour glass appears right next to the cursor pointer and at the same time the led in my floppy drive lights up and stays on for almost a minute TOGETHER with the hour glass that appear next to the cursor pointer.
when this is happening I do not have any disk inserted in the floppy drive, it is empty. this is a repeated thing everytime I am using  an application or PERFORMING a task or using my d: drive this thing starts up right in the middle of my work.  I check for spyware using system mechanic profession 5 and virus scan and it FOUND NOTHING. I am in need of serious help :oThe most probable cause is your AV checking the floppy every time there is a disk read or write. Disable this FEATURE.

Use proper media, DVD+R/W is not the same as DVD-R/W.DVD+rw is the media required for my system.  It has worked when I saved movie files.  The "My Pictures" file will allow only a CD save to on the drop down box.Joe1970park.....WELL , typically one wouldnt save jpgs to a dvd ......movie files yes ......but jpgs should be on a cd .

Solve : usb port not connected?

Answer»

All hubs working and CLEAR but when i check the printer ports one comes up as usb port not connected i am trying to print off photos with an epsom papermate Hi Derek,

Best check on usb ports is when you connect or disconnect. If you are on XP then TURN your speakers up, you should hear a 'bing bong' NOISE when plugging or removing any usb device.
If you dont then the system is not recognising any device attached.

either try another another port to check or reinstall printer software with your printer disconnected first.

Solve : Applications not Closing?

Answer»

For some reason, EVEN after trying to CTRL+ALT+DEL an application closed, it just remains open on the desktop. If I X out of the window, the END NOW window comes up and even after CLICK YES it still remains open. I tried END PROCESS in CTRL+ALT+DEL PROCESSES tab but that does nothing. It won't close out. Any IDEAS? Do I have a virus or something? I have no ANTIVIRUS software unforunately. Is there any free software out there COMPARABLE or better than McAfee or Norton also? Thanks. Is it with every application you use?

Solve : Inserting USB key - Open Options...?

Answer»

Hello,

Quick question... usually when you INSERT a USB key into your computer windows opens a dialogue box asking how you would like to open it.  Maybe i turned off this option, but now when i insert my key it never asks me(i usually want to open it as a folder).  Is there a WAY to get windows to ask me how I want to open it?

Thanks

MH88Hi

If you plug your usb pen in and then go into My Computer and 'right' click on the drive letter of that pen and left click properties you should be able to click on the autoplay TAB at the top.

There's a SELECTION box at the bottom that enables 'Prompt me each time to choose an option' or you can set it to automatically open folder to view files by the 'Select an action to perform' option.

Solve : Unable to start XP after 1hr shutdown?

Answer»

I'm unable to restart WinXP after about 1hr shutdown I get an error(mutiple) or I have to USE last known good config. to restart. It will restart just fine if I restart within approx. an hour of the last shutdown. It's like it lost my setting to restart. Please help!

Davedbrown39..... What error mesage do you get ?
When did this start .......?
When you do a normal shutdown ....do you see the meesage ....your settings are being saved ?
Is there anything else unusual about the way the computer is working ?

dl65  Maybe you could give us a little info about the machine, make/model, drives, RAM, video setup, operating system, etc. and what HAPPENED prior to this problem. I assume it has not always been this way.How old is the computer? Have you ever changed the CMOS battery?Little response to post/and what was it a LAPTOP?Maybe he'll be back.......Maybe he won't.Wait....i hear footsteps.....

patio. Do you here the foot steps.
My system is a ECS board for my tualatin CPU 1.2GHz
512mb ram, new P4 power supply, new CMOS battery,
GEFORCE 3 Ti450 vid card, 20gig WD HD.

It is very strange what it does I only get error messages once in a while. When I do they SEEM to be driver related but I have never been able to narrow it down. I have tried driver verifier but no help and yes at shutdown it does state my settings are being saved. I'm lost as to what to do. Any help would be great.

Dave dbrown39.......  Could you please provide answers to these questions ?

Remember , the more info you can provide the better the chances of a resolution .

dl65

If the error messages are driver related there is a conflict somewhere. My first guess would be the video card.
Visit the manuf. site and type in the model# in their search bar and see if you have the correct driver installed or if there is an updated version.

patio. The last error I got was
Bad System Config Info.
STop 0X74 (0X03, 0X02, 0X80087,0XC14C)
I had to use last known good config. to get it to restart.

I was just now reviewing my device manager and noticed that there is no driver for my system clock is that normal?

Solve : Black screen after new harddrive?

Answer»

I just put a new hardrive in one of my computers now the computer turns on with a blank screen and a blinking cursor...keyboard doesnt even work...i have had it with this computer please help before i go nutsLet start with basics. Are the jumpers set correctly? Is this a second hard drive? If it is the only hard drive did you install an operating system? What KIND of computer - make/model? What kind of hard drive - IDE or SATA?  Can you see it is the BIOS/Setup?

Details in the questions get details in the answers. What have you done? Have you any experience with installing hard drives?

eh lol im a complete noob the jumpers were wrong...it was set to be a slave instead of master glad to hear everything is OK now. Come back and visit anytime.

GX1_Man strikes again

oh what do you know yet another problem...i have gotton tot he point where im a running the software cd for the new hardrive however the software cd is only recognizing the old hardrive that is in the computer...why is this...

It says it sees my old drive installed as a primary slave

Why would it do this if that drive has been REMOVED from my computer and a new one put in?It was formatted as a primary partition, rather than a logical drive in an extrended partition, perhaps.l

so are there now two drives in this machine, and how do you want them to end up?No there is only the new drive in the machine...the old drive is a lousy 30 gig that is messed up...this new one is 80gig.  i have the 80 gig all hooked up just like the directions say and all this wizard can see is the old one THATS laying on my bed...if thats not weird i dont know what isWhat wizard? If it was a blank hard drive what is on there? How does it register in the BIOS? Have you reinstalled WIndows on this drive? If so, what version.I put the new harddrive in the computer i put the cdrom that came with the new harddrive in the computer...it brings me to a wizard that is supposed to setup the new hardrive to run with the computer.  the harddrive was just purchased from the store nothing has been done to it.I would forgo all of that and just use Windows to partition and format the drive, unless this is a VERY old machine that cannot see a drive this big. Again, what size drive shows in the BIOS. It is important that your computer is seeing it properly.  What computer make and model.

We're close to a solution.

The computer is fairly new its a Dell Dimension 2350 with a pentium 4 and it used to have win xp home on it...See whats strange is...

I have been looking at the diagnostic tools that are on the cdrom that came with this new harddrive...and it shows Motherboard Primary/Secondary IDE Controller...and right below that is my 80gig drive.   Unfortunatly the list i see this on is only a disc drive diagnostic PROGRAM...

What do you THINK it means Motherboard Primary/Secondary IDE Controller?Primary controller is where hard drives should go, and secondary is for cD/DVD drives. It's best to keep it this way.

Since I now know you have a Dell, press F2 when the machine restarts and you will get to the BIOS screen. How big does it show the hard drive to be?
ok i see it...it does see the 80 gig drive

and its set as the ide primary master

so when i try to boot fromt he newly installed harddrive i get stuck at that black screen with a blinking underscore...  _

When I get to this screen i have no functions...ctrl alt delete doesnt even workSInce you have a Dell, set the jumpers as cable select, none of that master slave stuff for the jumpers. THIS IS NOT AN OPTION! Make sure the hard drive is pluggged into the connector farthest from the motherboard on that flat IDE cable (it probably is) Boot the machine with the WIndows CD or the Dell recovery cD in the drive.

You shoulod be good to go. I expect no more problems. And do NOT use that software that came with the hard drive. No need for that stuff.

So basically take the jumper out of the drive...as for the ide its in the same spot as it always ways...and also dont the harddrives come with a copy of windows installed on them?  I know a western digital drive i got before did...

Solve : Cookie Problem?

Answer»

Hi,

I am facing this problem with Yahoo mail at the time.

Whenever i open my inbox it SHOWS the page cannot be displayed.
But if i delete the cookies it works pretty well.

It isn't a login or machine related problem as many of the users are facing the same thing and all do the same thing.

What can be the reason.Nothing special about Yahoo Mail.  This issue is mostly likely related to your other problems. No its related to Yahoo Mail only.

Otherwise how can it be that all users of Yahoo mail only are facing the same problem.

ALSO it happens on all machines, not a specific one. Quote

Solve : Stupid but useful?

I was wondering if there is a WAY to send a MESSAGE another user on a local network using a batch file?

I have been messing around with this but have had no luck thus far.Well,

I figured out what the problem is:

computers with XP XP2 will not allow this function. We have spammers and people who have used the messenger service as an exploit to thank for this. Now I can no longer message users simple directions and other simple convenient features. Now i have to walk my *censored* all the way up and down 24 sets of stairs to tell someone to reboot. I WOULD LIKE TO GLOBALLY THANK SPAMMERS AND SPYWARE WRITERS FOR THIS! YOU ALL MAKE EVERYONES LIVES "GREAT" (ACTUALLY you make me want to jam a red hot metal spike in my eye) WITH YOUR OH SO USER FRIENDLY EXPLOITS! keep on making honest people's lives *censored*!  Have you tried using netsend from the command prompt? You can enable the messenger service in 'Services', I think SP2 disables it for security reasons.I don't think so.

Otherwise it gives a WARNING messenger service is disabled ...Wrong winxp will allow...........remote access or radmin to do what it wishes/or EVEN email attachments.

If the above statement was corrrect.........no more worms/trojans >>>>>unless the users choses otherwise.

Solve : Fragmented Files on WindowsXP?

Answer»

Hi. My computer is running very slowly and I frequently receive Error messages from Internet Explorer ("Internet Explorer has encounterd a problem and needs to close").  I tried to free up space on my hardrive by removing programs and I have also deleted temporary files.  This does not help.  I have a huge amount of fragmented files that won't defrag with the PROGRAM. I only have 5% free space and I have no idea what I have in my computer that could taking up so much space.  Any ideas on what I could do to fix this?
In Folder Option, choose "Show hidden files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and you shall see what you really  have in your drives. If re-installing IE won't help, then perhaps you may try re-install Windows?where is folder options?Control Panel -> Folder Option -> "View"ok once I have unchecked it, where do I go to view the files and how do I know which ones I don't WANT or need?  (im sorry, I am very computer illiterate)I think 15% free space is suggested for swap file, and also to defrag as things are geting moved around. This may cause the SLOWNESS, but it may indicate spyware/adware/trojans/virii. Are you up to date on all of these things?

Click on the link below and head to Disk Cleanup.

It is probably System Restore that is taking up a lot of room.

You should have 15% free-space to be able to run defrag.if system restore is taking up  a lot of space, what do i do to fix that?

i kinda need detailed instruction bc i am very much computer illiterate! Well I did a Google search for "disable system restore" and look what I got as the first pick!

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001111912274039?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam

Google is your friend and you can do it too!

ok thanks..but are there any CONSEQUENCES ? is it safe to do this? Quote
