Solve : Too many USB options?

Answer»

Ok, I'm trying to CONNECT my new external harddrive to my PC.  It's USB 2.0 and, apparantly, so are at least some of my USB ports (ie. my device manager labels 1 as 'USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller ' and 3 others as simply 'USB Universal Host Controller').  To complicate matters, I have 4 USB ports on the back and 2 on the front.

Ok, the question...which one is USB 2.0?  I've tried connecting to 4 of them (other 2 currently in use) and transfering a LARGE file.  Instead of seconds, it's taking 20 minutes.

What am I doing wrong?  Or are my expectations simply UNEDUCATED?

Thanks,List all..........computer o/s and specs.....don't know what 'spec's you need/want...

it's a 2 year old basic Dell machine running Windows XP.  I'm trying to utilize a MAXTOR external drive.

Does that help?Load the drivers for external drive........re-boot pc....and plug-in the drive.USB (Universal Serial Bus) - shouldn't make any difference which port you plug the device into. As the name suggests it's universal so as long as you install the drivers BEFORE plugging the device in it should function from the start.

What size of file are you transfering?
Your system specs will have an impact on that speed - 4GB can take a little while to transfer where as 1MB should be really quick! Quote

Solve : HELP  Windows Wont Start?

When I first turn my computer on I SEE this on the first screen:

Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows Application.
The windows REGISTRY or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists.
If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program.
If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.

Looks LIKE you're using Quicken. (?)

Missing MrtRate.vxd Error Message When You Start the Computer

First of all you should run MemTest86 overnight to see if your RAM is producing any errors leading to data corruption.

Make a MemTest86 bootdisk up on another computer. Take a look at the link below and make the other bootdisks up as well as they could come in handy. You just need ten floppy diskettes. (One pack.)

If MemTest reports errors try re-seating the RAM module(s) and run the test again.

If the test comes up error-free then boot to your XP CD and load the Recovery Console.

Then type - chkdsk /r - and see if that improves matters.

How are you doing on anti-virus and anti-Trojan protection?
What operating system and do you have a legal CD of Windows to do a reinstall? That is probably your best bet for a lot of reasons.

Solve : Computer Has Mind of Its Own!!?

Answer»

Help!  I used my computer last night (for the first time in about 4 months) and it worked fine.  I turned my computer off last night only to awake to it being on again!

It won't stop booting/rebooting!

I've gone into BIOS and it still reboots (so I think that means windows XP isn't the problem).

I've unchecked the 'automatically reboot when error occurs' box for software, so I think that software isn't the problem.

I've checked the device MANAGER and saw no significant notifications.

I opened the case and made sure all fans were running and checked for loose chords/cables, everything looked fine (although I could have been mistaken, since I'm not great with computer repair/building).

Anything else I've forgotten to do?  What else could be the problem?

I built this computer about 2.5years ago and haven't had trouble w/ it untill now.  The local computer shop says they will diagnose it for $50.00....is this a good deal? (seems mildy expensive).  I'd rather try to fix it myself, but after visiting this site and all the help they've offered me, none of it seems to work.

Thanks for any comments and suggestions, it's much appreciated!

NickOh, and ONE more thing.  It cannot be an issue of memory since my memory is fine (I haven't checked it, but I have lots of RAM and little software) and it was running perfectly last night... This is the author.  Sorry I have one more piece of information to add.

I installed warcraft iii+the expansion set last night, and deleted unused programs.  This computer has had wc3/xpac on it before and done fine.  But just in case, I thought it might be important to include this info.

I'm gonna keep searching for possible solutions, if anyone needs any more info please don't hesitate to ask.Another site has suggested this:  "Try unplugging and re-plugging each card into its respective slot. Make sure the slot and card interface are free of any dust, and then proceed to seat the card into the slot again (ensure there is nothing OBSTRUCTING the card and never force it to go in)."

Which I hate to do, simply b/c reconnecting the cables I once connected scares me, but if worse comes to worse I will.  I think this could be a probable solution to my problem b/c the computer has gone through about 4 hours on the road (seems like all that bumping and jostling could eventually loosen something up...it just seems odd that it started up fine, then when I went to shut it down it started having problems).
Resources to help troubleshoot shutdown problems in Windows XPIs it booting from the 'off' state or re-booting from the 'on' state? Thanks Mac I will check those out.

Fred, I believe it is rebooting from the off state--but possibly both?

I originally turned it off and went to bed...it did turn off, but I woke up and noticed that it was on (no one messed with it or anything, so it had to have booted by itself).

Hope that answers your question, if not, please clarify and I'll try to elaborate.

ThanksOk!! I appreciate any and all who help me fix my problem.  I tried simply reinstalling windows XP, and the first thing I noticed during the installation, was that my computer wasn't whimsically rebooting!

So after the installation, it appears everything is okay.

Something that does bother me is this:  I ran BIOS and yet the computer still rebooted w/o my warrant.  Isn't BIOS completely separated from XP.  And if so, wouldn't it not have restarted?A good reformat fixes most Windows problems, for a while anyway.

Is your power switch partially stuck? I can't imagine how it could turn itself on from a power off without being possessed.Argh!!! I was mistaken.  Reinstalling windows did help, now it only turns off (but won't turn back on).  Also, I can turn the power switch off and that stops the computer from doing anything, but I would like to use it .

Sigh...maybe it's time to categorize it as furniture .

Guess I'll try and reformat =P.If you just reformatted and reinstalled, no need to go through that again. The problem seems to be only the power button? Windows will not fix malfunctioning hardware. How bout leaving it on and then using a power bar with an on/off switch on that? A computer would have to be REALLY shot for me to give up on it.Well UNFORTUNATELY when I reinstalled windows, I did just that, I didn't format.  Now I want to try reformatting but it's not giving me the option; I'm back to square one.

The problem isn't the power button; it isn't stuck or anything.  It's more like...the power mechanism just keeps going on and off randomly, but I think something is telling it to do that, I don't think it's the mechanism.  It is being coerced by some sort of internal error I would imagine.I had a computer & the default bios setting was to 'turn itself on' by an incoming modem signal.
(It was on a dialup modem)
The short story is, if someone tried to ring in the computer would switch itself on from a dead state. Quote

Maybe it's time to categorize it as furniture.

How old is it? Have you ever changed the CMOS battery?

Can you see a wake-up setting in the BIOS?
what type of internet connection do you have, dial-up, dsl, or cable?  i would make sure your modem and/or nic isn't set to wake the computer.  once you get the computer up and running, i'd run a virus scan if you haven't done so already as well as scan the system for spyware.  if both of those scan don't detect anything, definitly a hardware problem.  i'd first swap out the power supply, if that doesn't work, cmos battery, and if that doesn't work, you MAY have a problem with your mother board.  good luck, let me know how you make out.

Solve : adware & trojan hunters?

Most of these programs will allow a free scan of your computer and will show that there are a lot of problems on your hd. I've run a couple of these programs and one showed 187 problems and another showed 160. I went to look for some of these problems and they don't seem to exist; at least, I can't find them in the directories that they show. My question is: do these programs just show imaginary problems to entice a person to buy the SOFTWARE? I ran my antivirus last week and I'm quite sure that my computer is clean. In a lot of cases , these trial programs which aren't fully functional report false positives......
Trojans can be very elusive and even your anti virus app may not find them .

dl65  I have always found Panda pretty good, it won't clean everything but I wouldn't expect it to as it's free.

A good starting point for beginners as it's updated daily and it only takes a click or TWO to try.

Far easier than trying to explain how to download, install, update, configure & run say AVG.

I bet 95% of users don't even have AVG configured properly.

The program is not free, only the scan.I was thinking of AdAware, Spybot, AVG Free. et al. Quote

First of all you need to unhide all files and folders and also look in the registry.

Secondly some rogue programs do have one or two false items to make you think that they have found something.

With AdAware SE and SpyBot SD, especially where these programs are being used for the first time, it is not uncommon to find a hundred or more things which shouldn't be there.

I have seen 992 and 1174 before now.

I would also use SpywareBlaster which aims at prevention.
I'm using Spywareguard for prevention and I run spy bot every few days. I made a list of all the infections/adware and I haven't been able to find one. I haven't looked in the registry yet.Use the safeguards that came with this the pc........like hide this folder........>if you clicked on the c drive......the legend to left tells you of this option.Download & run ccleaner then scan it again.

So what's the secret?Advanced settings

<-------- Do you like my dog?"• All antivirus programs, including AVG, by default have their settings to only scan executable files in an attempt to speed up looking for infections. While most of the time this is just fine, the newest threats that can infect your computer have started getting sneaky on how they hide their files making it easier for them to reinfect your system if your antivirus program detected and removed their executable file. To help also detect these "backup" files that the infection leaves on your system, you should in my OPINION, make a couple of changes to what your AVG scans from just executable files to all files.

• To change AVG's settings, open AVG's Test Center.
Click the Tests menu then in both of the tests labeled Complete Test Settings and Selected Area Test Settings select Scan all Files and click the Ok button.

• Now AVG will scan all of the files when you scan your computer. This will TAKE longer to complete, but I feel it is a small price to pay for the added security it provides."

Solve : Windows ME - USB Hubs Not Working?

Answer»

Hello there,

I have four USB hubs on my PC two on the FRONT and two on the BACK.  The two on the front of my PC work perfectly, but the other two on the rear do not work so well.

For example, if I plug anything (ie keyboard, printer, scanner) into the rear two USB hubs, it just states that an unknown device has been installed as OPPOSED to stating what the device is, and then in the device manager, there is a yellow exclaimation mark and needless to say whatever device I do plug into the rear does not work at all.

I know there is nothing wrong with my devices as if I plug them into the front USB hubs the computer detects the device and installs the appropriate software, yet the same doesn't work for the rear.

Can anyone please help me?

DaveDid you do anything to break them does it give you a yellow ! on USB hub , generic USB etc... As far as im concern if the USB has the Yellow ! it is broken.Has this ever worked as you envision? Did something happen that could make it stop working? Hav eyou checked the owner's manual or motherboard manufacturer site? What make and model are we talking?

They used to work, not sure why now they don't, and no there is no yellow ! mark. Quote

If you unplug the front usb devices do the rear ones work then?

When you say 'hub' do you mean the PORTS or an actual additional external hub?
Do the ports look damaged - is the internal plastic divider still there?Yes system restore does not restore them.  All the correct software for my USB devices is also  installed correctly as when I plug whichever component into one of the front USB slots, the device works perfectly.

Even if I unplug the front two USB's, the back two still don't really work.irq.........windows allocates irq for usb devices/pnp......type msinfo32 in the run box......and post the list........what usb devices do you have ?you have to strike a balance.....of what your pc can/or cant do? list pc specs.....are all the usb devices enabled in the bios set-up screen?

Hello all, first post here so my apologies if this has been asked before. My processor is an amd 1700, i UNDERSTAND it runs at 1.47 mhz, correct? The reason i ask is when i go to my control PANEL, then system, it says its only a 1.10 ghz, but the ram is correct at 768. I didnt realize this untill i installed a game and it said my computer didnt meet the minnimum requirements. Any ideas as to whats going on? Thanks in advance, Cdog. Can you overclock an AMD processor? Has it been 1.10ghz? Is your BIOS upgraded? Are the jumpers SET correctly on the motherboard (133 vs 166?)Its an msi motherboard, and yes this happened after i tried to update the bios. but it SUPPOSEDLY reset to original defaults. Its an msi kt3 ultra 2 (ms-6380e), anyone know where to get a good update?? Thanks again, Cdog.So you did back up your old BIOS setting or no? It is hard to get an old version.. the original version they don't seem to have them anymore. So you did back it up and know how to set it back right?NO, i didnt back it up, and no i do not really have a clue what im doing!!Did your computer ever show it as 1.47ghz?Yes, it did, and when i tried to fix this, the very next screen that came up showed it as 1.47, but it would not let me continue, so i had to back out. Thanks for your quick responses and patience, it is greatly appreciated!! Is there anywhere on the web where i could find an updated bios? Thanks again, Cdog.Well what I read so far people are overclocking there AMD processors to 1.47ghz. Maybe you don;t have to but let me go reasearch your motherboard... what BIOS you are using? Award or does it come with another one?

http://www.overclockersclub.com/overclockingfaq.phpI didnt think this was overclocked at 1.47, it was supposed to be built that way??? I do not know what bios i am running, how can I find out??http://www.esupport.com/global/upgradesteps.cfm
don't hit buy from them use this little softwear to find your BIOS infomation and CPU speed. Also helps you to find Max CPU speed. The program said 1100mhz, I MUST be wrong in thinking a 1700xp runs at 1.47??? Im very confused, but thanks for all your help!! Cdog.Did you at least get your Bios Info? Post it here so I can do some reasearch for you62-0224-009999-00101111-040201-VIA_K7-1AARK204
American megatrends Date 02/24/03 Thats the bios id, do you need more info?? It also says a max of 3000 mhz, i dont understand this either, thanks again!!!Ok now I know the year of the BIOS the 3000mhz means your computer can take CPU up to 3.0ghz Can I have the motherboard model?

Ex. BIOSTAR M6TWG v1.1

Solve : XP Pro Repair Installation and loss of update.inf?

Answer»

As these are service updates which were on the drive, if you then USE an XP CD which does not have them integrated into the CD you will undo whatever is already installed on the drive.

You could try using NLite and see if it will not only slipstream SP2 but also add the SP3 files as well.

You could then burn an XP SP3 CD from the resulting .ISO IMAGE and see if that does the job properly for you.

That might save you having to install them one at a time.Almost correct, er, Mac.

The grammatically correct phrase would be "That might save your having to...".

But then who's here to critique the quality of another's habitual prose, eh?

For my purposes the technical ISSUE is resolved by the apparent wisdom of doing a clean install.

It was a pleasure however to return long enough to feed you a SLICE of your own favorite pie.

Get a life.

Check your memory with memtest. It is free and thorough.

www.memtest86.com

Let's start there.
You may need to re-seat the RAM module and you should certainly add some more RAM

Click the link below for more info.why does the mem test take a long time.  I went for lunch came back and its still RUNNING.  I'm about to go home now from work and it is still running. Its been over 2-3 hours.  How long should it take??I run them overnight sometimes. If there are no errors showing then your RAM is OK.GoBack Causes a Stop Error C000021aI got some errors showing in the errors column as it is running now.    Errors = 95633     Ecc Errs= 0

Does this mean I have BAD memory??

YES it does. Have you tried a different RAM module?

Are all your fans running properly? If you have more than one stick of ram you can play musical ram chairs with them.

Solve : drive C is full?

Answer»

I have a 3GB hard drive and it's almost full.  I'm not sure how to find out if I can get rid of some files.  I cleaned out the temp internet files and a few others but that didn't help much.  I have created some new files during my project to TRANSFER music from tape to CD's.  This is probably the main cause, however, now I don't have enough room to use the Nero CD burner to transfer the files.  Please help this NOVICE.  Thanks go to the control panel then Add/remove programs.

uninstall the things in there that you don't need.

R0SSWhen I Open C drive and SEE that the MEMORY is almost full, how do I find out what makes up the 2.86GB of space?  And if I remove a program I may need later? With Windows Explorer, right click on the directrories, choose 'properties and it will show you the size.
If you uninstall something you need later, it won't work anymore.
Maybe time for a new HDD?a new hard drive is probably the best way to go, with three gig minus the space of the OS you don't have alot of space anymore, especially for music files.Win98 needs less than 1GB.
Clean house with this. There is a software Cclearner.

It requires very less space to install.
Install it, it will clean many things that you won't be able to do yourself.

After that you can uninstall it.Which operating system are you using Janey?

RAM is memory. Drive space is a DIFFERENT matter.

A 3GB drive has 2.79 GB of binary space or 2861 MB.

You mention drive C: , is this a partitioned drive and do you have any other - physical - drives in the same computer?

Solve : Having a lot of problems!?

Answer»

Ok so FIRST of all, my computer decided it didn't like Paint, Calculator, Sound Recorder, the recycle bin, etc. and deleted all of them. They're just gone. Also, my search doesn't work properly. Ctrl Alt Delete doesn't work. All Programs won't load from the start menu. I can't shut off or log off or switch users from the start menu. And it doesn't tell me how much battery power I have left. And the sound icon is gone from the bottom right too. Also, I can't change the desktop wallpaper or screensaver.

Help! It's having issues!Virus/spyware/adware most likely. Use free scanners readily available before proceding further.

Jusst by chance do you use AIM, Messenger, Kazaaa or some other P2P client?Yeah sounds like its Riddled with a virus.

Run a scanner

R0SSI've run McAfee virus scanner about 3 different times since things started happening and nothings gotten picked up. I don't know of any free virus scanners that work well.

As far as adware and the like, I have Ad-Aware.

I used to use Kazaa but I use Limewire now. I have AIM that I use very RARELY, but I do use MSN messenger a lot.
your P2Ps are fine i USES them and nothings happened.

Try running Microsoft Anti-Spyware it seems a good program and might get some stuff the rest cant FIND.

If you have XP that is.

R0SS

Looks like you need to do a clean install to a freshly partitioned and full formatted drive, and then make a drive image to restore with in future.

AVG is a good freeware Anti-Virus program and you also have a choice of freeware anti-Trojan programs, AdAware SE, SpyBot SD & SpywareBlaster are the ones I use.

If you LOOK at the Freeware section on the link below you'll find these and more.

Calc '98 is far superior to the Windows offering.

Audacity is better than Sound Recorder and Xine is a free DVD player.

Solve : Windows XP Pro Repair Installation Gone Bad...?

Answer»

First off, I would like to thank in advance anyone who can possibly help me.

COMP:
AMD Athlon XP 2700+ Special (Thoroughbred core)
1.5 GB DDR333
nVidia Geforce 4 4600 Ti
111 GB WESTERN Digital JB (Main DRIVE)
72 GB Western Digital
40 GB Western Digital
Soyo KT400 Via Motherboard
C-Media (On-Board) Sound
500 Watt PS
TDK 42x24x42
DVD-ROM

I had a corrupt installation of WINDOWS up and running, brought back form the dead. I could and couldn't do certain things, (WMP was dead, could play HL2, etc...)

So I tried to repair the installation, failed while finalizing stating that the productcatalog could not be install and that tabsrv would not work.

Then I did an install of a second Windows, under C:\Windows2, which was installed with the wrong disk. (It wasn't my day...) So now my OEM Pro CD-Key is not recognized by that installation.

After which I installed XP on a different HDD, the 72 GB one, which works fine, and was able to look at the C: drive. Basically how it stands now is that there are two installations, one being a repair, stuck halfway. AND, it gets better..., it seems that in my quite frustrated state I entered my same username as before, which now shows that my Desktop, My Documents, etc... all of my stuff is gone. It says access to the folder is not allowed. The properties show that the folder contains no files. HOWEVER there was no change regarding amount of space used on the drive. So in essence, I think, the files are still there, although they are not being recognized.

ANY TIPS, HINTS, OR HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED, FOR 6 YEARS OF WORK (70 GB) IS AT STAKE.

Thanks.

CollinI apologize fo the duel post, I had an error the first time and it never loaded. Yeah, my computer skills are 1337 right now.  Hi Collin,

Biggest tip? Back up your data on a weekly basis.

When you tried to repair the installation did you have any USB devices ATTACHED to your pc? Mouse and keyboard are ok, but it's the modems, printers, PDA's etc that can cause problems.

Was the original drive encrypted? If so you would need the key to access it again.

Solve : No Green Color component problem??

Answer»

Does this mean my monitor needs replacing, or is it a different PROBLEM?  In Windows 98, after working fine, the color quality just changed while I was away from my desk & though I am ABLE to manipulate the color spline in the Display Properties/Settings/Advanced/Color, I notice that the color control curve for Green affects no changes.

This has left me with annoying neon colors, especially red/yellow tones (at least I think that's the reason), so now I am only left with the red & blue factors as colors.  Any SUGGESTIONS?  I did try reloading an earlier working registry, as that worked for someone with font trouble, but that didn't help here.  Hopefully someone can help, because I've got mega eyeball burnout! :-/!
Thank you!!It's EITHER your video card or your monitor. Try DOWNLOADING current drivers, and try another monitor on there. And maybe even try that monitor on another computer. Let's see where the variable is.

What graphics adapter and computer make/model?Thanks so much - I'll try switching the monitors, then try the driver downloads (the device manager said I didn't need to, but it's all suspect now! haha) - We've got another PC in the house, so that won't be hard.

The problem PC is an ETower 333c with ATI 3D Rage IIc AGP Graphics with 4MB SDRAM - is that what you needed to know?  I'm not so hot on that end of the computer spectrum, so let me know if you need more info or I gave you the wrong answers - Thanks again!Should be EXTREMELY easy to get drivers for that card. It's compatible with everything (except today's gaming) and a very good chipset.Make sure your video cable is plugged in properly.Br33.....Given that you still have the reds and blues ....I would guess its your monitor that is the problem ......the green emitter isnt working.

dl65  Thanks to all - the monitor was indeed the culprit - all is well & my eyes are on the road to recovery.  Thanks again!

Solve : Boot WindowsXP problems!?

Answer»

A computer system starts over and over (WindowsXP professional), not recognize WindowsXP installation CD (after adding the CD-ROM like first bootable device), can not be started in any of F8 options (Safe Mode, Last Good Known Configuration and so on). As reason msg is shown: "Memory overflow error, please insert another disk"! (the CD is not the PROBLEM because the same CD is used to install WinXP in other PC). So, can MS-DOS startup disk be a solution? Formating C: using MS-DOS startup! If yes, the command "format C: /s"  is accepted like Bad command! Does anyone know's other way of formating C: and installing fresh copy of WindowsXP!Windows XP Professional starts over and over and is not recognising the Windows XP installation CD, after changing the CD-ROM to first bootable device.

It can not be started in any of the F8 options, Safe Mode, Last Good Known Configuration, and so on.

As the reason a MESSAGE is shown: "Memory overflow error, please insert another disk." The CD is not the problem because the same CD is used to install WinXP in other PC.

Can an MS-DOS startup disk be used to format?
The command "format C: /s"  gives a bad command message.  Does anyone know other ways of formatting C: and installing fresh copy of Windows XP!

Format c: /s - is a Windows '98 command and should not be used for XP. Only the XP CD should be used to format an XP installation whether you choose to format to FAT32 or NTFS.

This sounds like a hardware problem.

Have you tried running a memory test on your RAM or re-seating the modules? How are the FANS? Is the processor getting enough cooling? Any loose wiring or connectors?

Click on the link below for more info.
hey im not very good with computers but i had the same problem and it turnd out being my hardriveIt will turn out to be hardware. But it is only legal to have 1 copy of XP on ONE machine. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Cheers.

Newdot is notorious spyware which tracks your activities under the guise of market research, as most of this junk does.

Download these three freeware programs, AdAware SE, SpyBot SD and SpywareBlaster, UPDATE them all, MAKE a System Restore point, and then run a full scan with the first two.

SpywareBlaster is a preventative PROGRAM which doesn't need to scan.

This module is one you don't want, but you need to remove all trace of it from your system.Mac, thanks for your help. I have DL those 3 & done all the scans but that error box is still there when I turn putor on & also as I'm turning it off now a error box comes up failure to initialise & thats all I get to read as it shuts done, any thoughts.

Solve : Olympiad: Best practices for your system?

Answer» HI,

Lets start a Olympiad question.

What should one do to keep his system work the most efficiently.Besides the most COMMON ones like

Scanning
Restores
Backups
DefragmentingScanning  Real time protection ---> Tick
Restores Why?
Backups Why?
Defragmenting ---> Tick
Cleanup ---> Ccleaner ---> Tick
Firewall ---> Tick
Disable unused/uneeded services or set to manual ---> Tick
Turn off Wallpaper ---> Tick
Turn off Power saving settings ---> Tick
Turn off all unessential startup programs ---> Tick
Turn down browser cache size ---> Tick
Turn down browser history time ---> Tick

LET me think about it.  I was talking a bit general that's why i included Backups and restores.

Leave it.

You have got some interesting points:
Lemme see ...

Won't Ccleaner come in Scanning ( provided it includes virus, spywares, etc ).
Turn off Wallpaper, Power saving settings    Why
What are Browser Cache size and History time

From the wordings Browser Cache size the amount that it caches, then isn't it good as it will perform faster.
No idea about History time.Aww, OK...

Restores ---> Tick
Backups ---> Tick
Ccleaner...You need to run it & see what it does.
Wallpaper uses memory as do unecessary screen icons.
Power saving, I've noticed that turning off monitor, HARD DRIVE and putting the computer into stand by seems to create a lot of problems for people.
Cache & History, not much point in your browser seaching these when the page I'm going to load has changed anyway. Like every screen in the forums.
It's OK for when you use the 'Back' button.
I set mine on 10Mbs cache & 1 day History.
People would be well advised to set commonly frequented sites into their hosts file file for faster access.

I nearly forgot one!  Registry Cleaner---> Tick  Checked the Ccleaner.

So it does all by itself. It also includes the registry cleaner. ( he he ).

From where do you set the Cache and History option.Control Panel > Internet Options.Oops,

That thing.

I just got confused with something else.

Any other suggestions.

Solve : Re: display properties not responding?

Answer»

Knowing what happened prior to all of this may help fix the problem.

As a a first step reinstall your drivers for your video card. AS you didn't state what that was or your computer make/model we are just GUESSING after that.

Information begets information.Which operating system are you using? Have you scanned for viruses and Spyware? Are you the administrator of this computer? Did this used to work? Have you made any changes to your system recently?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Not laughing at you, just TRYING to help. go to www.lavalys.com and download Everest Home edition. Load that and tell us what info you can get about display or graphics adapter. Then we can advise.I wouldn't assume that it needs to be replaced at all yet. Just a fresh COPY of WIndows solves most problems, for a while. Has Windows ever been reloaded on this machine throughout it's years of service?Well if it were here I would have that PUPPY HUMMING along well in under 2 hours, but we can probably walk you through it IF that turns out to be what's needed.

My own take is that you can waste hours trying to find solutions that could be resolved with much less time and effort with a simple reinstallation. After 6 years of use, "why" doesn't really enter into it.

I'm sure that is still a viable machine.

We can get you there. There's lots of online experts here.

As I told another poster, I'm just in one of those moods, so if you want to pay postage both ways, I'll get it fixed for you. It's a shame it won't go in e-mail!

I really like those older machines. Easy to work on and problem solve. Too many are discarded because they're not the latest and great and don't run the new games, but they are fine for what most humans need.Printing Problem

How about a proper post in a new thread in an appropriate spot and not hijacking this thread. You are more likely to get what you want and not confuse other issues.

If you double click on the reminder it will ask if you want that OCCASION or the series if you set one.
There's a tick BOX to the left of the minutes OPTION that will disable the reminders, if you haven't selected the series then it only disables that occasion.

You might look in the recycle bin to see if there's 9000 there, but if you find 'em you better leave 'em alone!

So I deleted them all from Ares. Well this morning I went on and everything in our computer is gone.

I restored the computer to yesterday and it didn't work.  Everything stayed the same.

I think I am in trouble and I need all the help I can get because it is just me at home, my whole family is in Las Vegas, and I need to fix this before they get home tomùorrow.

Could you please help me otherwise I'll never do ANYTHING ever again because we had very important documents in there as my MOTHER works from this computer.

Thanks.

Let your Mother deal with it. Just say what you have done and she will probably show you how to put it right. If you make another WRONG move you could make the drive unrecoverable.

If she wants to ask advice we could possibly help her or she may have a Forum which she uses already.

(Spam? I thought we were dealing with Corned Beef )
Just for future reference: deleting files from a file-sharing program like that more often than not that deletes them from your hard drive too. Sometimes, depending on what program you use there might be a check box that says "delete from hard drive also" (or something similar), so make sure you always take the check mark out first.Hey, if you want to learn something, here is what ro do.

First of all, please learn to write more clearly in normal English so that everyone can understand you. The more people understand you the more they can help you.

Secondly, if I understand correctly, you have deleted the files, but it is not hopeless yet. Just DONT install anything at this point except a data/file recovery program.  You can go online at CNET and downlod it, some of them are free.

Solve : a problem I'm having, please help if you can?

Answer»

I'm so confused by this, because it's like nothing I've ever seen happen before. I don't know how to explain really, but I have a screenshot so maybe that will help. All I know is when I go to Search from the Start menu, this is all that shows up, just the dog, Search Companion, and the exit button.

none...... Very discriptive user name .........What operating system are you using ?
Has the Search feature on your machine ever worked ?
Please don't double post .
Let us know

dl65  Where do you want to go today?   Is that Microsoft Bob's dog on there?

Don't ever click on that icon again!!!! Quote

Has the Search feature on your machine ever worked ?

Yes, a little more info, please. Any other symptoms? Have you checked for viruses?

Don't ever click on that icon again!!!!

(I ENJOY your sense of humor, GX !   )You inspire me Hopester!dl65: lol, I couldn't think of a better name so this is just what I went with. I use Windows XP. Yes, the search companion has worked before.
I don't know what double posting is, how did I do it? Just tell me so I can avoid it in the future.

Hopester Doofus: I'm checking for viruses now (with AVG Anti Virus), I never thought of doing that. I'll see what happens though. No one knows what I should do about this? Well, now I'm having the same problem with Yahoo Messenger, whenever someone TRIES to talk to me I can't see what they are saying.

I've tried windows update since that's what yahoo SAID to do, the only problem is the windows update website won't load for me!!! All that shows up is a blank white page (very similar to my problem with yahoo messenger). I hate internet explorer. Of course, I can't use Mozilla because you HAVE to use internet explorer for windows update they say, or it won't work...

I've also run virus and spyware scans, there were some of both found, but all of them were successfully deleted. And I'm still having the same problem I originally posted about.none.......

No one knows what I should do about this?

..... Well given all the useful diagnostic info you have provided .......

I would do the following :
1......Turn off your system restore .
2......Run another full system scan with AVG in "SAFE " mode
3......Run .......Antispyware Beta ...... ( you do have that don't you ?) If not get it at .......
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=321cd7a2-6a57-4c57-a8bd-dbf62eda9671&displaylang=en

4.....Then go to MS updates page and get the latest updates .......

BTW ......what else isn't working properly ?

dl65
System restore is already off, I haven't run a virus scan in safe mode yet but I'm about to, I use Spybot S&D to help with spyware...do you think AntiSpyware Beta would be a better program to use?

I would go to Microsoft updates website but as I said, the page doesn't even load for me. I'm all out of ideas on why it won't, unless you think I should try it in safe mode also?

A virus scan takes a long time so...I'll be back later...

Oh, and Windows search program and Yahoo Messenger are the only two programs not working right... none........
Antispyware is a very good tool ...one of the better ONES , however you should be using both antispyware and spybot as they each find different things.
And yes I would definately be running the scans in the safe mode .
Exactly what is the message when you go to the M/S update site ?

dl65  Trying to install antispyware but it won't work, this is what happens:

Begin genuine Windows validation

1. Run the validation tool.

Let's try validating a different way:

Click Validate Now to run the genuine Windows validation application.

Solve : Locked BIOS?

Answer» Purchased "as is" laptop on eBay and the BIOS requests a password to ENTER setup. Also requests password to continue bootup. Will not boot from floppy and will not boot from CD-ROM. It is a DELL Inspiron 3200.

Any expert advice out there for a NOVICE?

THANK you!
Hello MillerLarry.

Suggest you contact Dell but don't hold out too much hope that they will come to your rescue, as you are not the original purchaser, without filling their coffers with your hard-earned.

Any chance of getting help from the seller? tho' the seller might have bought it in the same condition and on-sold it for the same reason you are having problems with.

Try a spcialised Dell forum, someone there might have more info.

Sorry not to be of much help.

Good luckHere's a LINK to the User Guide. Sometimes you get lucky. With a system BIOS password, sometimes not.

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ptwist/

Heres a link to the Inspiron Forum AREA. Registration is free, just ask your question.

http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums?category.id=inspironI knowingly purchased this unit but this is the first time with such a purchase that I have not been able to boot with a floppy or a CD drive......

Thanks muchly for the tips - I will try the Dell forum!
Be sure and let us know the outcome!

Laptops aren't my thing but can't you just pull it's cmos battery so it goes back to the bios defaults?

Solve : Postmordem Debugger?

Answer»

What on Earth is Postmodem Debbugger? It frequently crashes my PC by FREEZING the whole computer cept Ctrl+Alt+Delete I have to restare everytime that happens. Is there a way to DISABLE it? I haven't done anything to the computer It just started happening for about a month now.

Hi

Try downloading and installing 'AdAware SE Personal' and 'HIJACK This'. Both are available on www.download.com and free to use.

Adaware will get RID of any spyware and if you run Hijack this and save a log file and then post it on here we can see what 'spurious' applications may be lurking underneath somewhere.

Solve : PLEASE HELP me to get out of this JAM !!?

Answer»

Ok...Heres the problem,

I have a HP Pavilion, Celeron Proc computer Windows 98  I am trying to fix...I attempted to ReFormat then it stalled DUING the First CD being read...I can do  NOTHING On it...now
All I get is a Black SCREEN thats says..Invalid Disk..

I went in to the BIOS  set the Floppy as the 1st Boot...Popped in an Emergency Win 98 Start up Disk...
All I get now is... DISK I/O ERROR  Replace the Disk then press any key...

I also attempted to have it Boot from the CDROM by placing that as the 1st Boot device but it said it couldn't read Drive M?? HUH?
So I reset the BIOS to read the Floppy first, but no Luck...

ANY SUGGESTIONS??
PLEASE HELP on this Rainy Afternoon!!   :-/[glb][/glb]

THANK you!     Drive M is how it is set to boot off the recovery CD. It obviously can't read it. Is it dirty? Are all the connectors to the drive snug?Connections to the CDROM seem Ok...The light is coming on etc too...

Why wouldn't the Win 98 Rescue Floppy not be reading??

If the BIOs is set to read the Floppy 1st, then the CD ROM, then wouldn't at least One of them take the startup /recovery data??

What does Disk I/O ERROR mean??

Thanks!!You may not need the floppy at all. What if you just boot with the CD recovery disc in and set to boot from CD first?

Solve : xcopy & CD burning?

Answer»

When using the batch command xcopy under XP & writing to a burner, the /D (newer than date) parameter does not work.  The identical code WORKS if writing to a hard drive.

Anyone else with info on this?Is packet writing enabled? Did this ever work for you? What SOFTWARE do you have on MACHINE for burning? I am assuming these are CDRW's?Packet enabled.  Have not seen it work on any XP system.  Have tried several.  All other xcopy parameters SEEM to work correctly.

Solve : Mouse - left click acting lick right click?

Answer»

I have a mouse problem that I have never come across.  When on the DESKTOP or in some applications such as Microsoft Outlook 2003, the left click acts like a right click and the right click is dead.  When in other applications like Internet Explorer it's fine.  In other windows (like pop-ups - TASK manager) the mouse doesn't work at all.  I have rebooted several times and even SWITCHED the mouse to one that I use on another PC that definitely works.  I am running Windows XP Professional.  Any advice?  Does this sound like a setting one of my children might have changed or some sort spyware/virus?  Any help would be very appreciated.Either of those are possibilities. Can you go to Control Panel/Mouse settings and check there? How about ASKING kids?
