|
Answer» so... i was really bored and i started playing with my computer and i left clicked on my wall paper and there was this thing that SAID stard color, or high color. So i didn't KNOW what high color was so i clicked on one of them. Suddenly, my monitor TURNED to black and is not turning back to my desktop, even though i restrated mycomputer. i feel really dumb. Will someone please help me and tell me whats going on? lol no need to make two threads Boot into SAFE mode and change it back to what it was. Normally, when that happens, if you press the escape (ESC) key, windows returns to the original setting. To get to Safe Mode, press the F8 key after the BIOS or computer manufacturer display and before the Windows splash screen. |

Solve : Computer Safe Boot Freeze on Mup.sys? |
|
Answer» Hello all, Hello all, When you see the system freeze on mup.sys it is usually the - next - driver that is the cause of the problem. Disconnect ALL peripherals except the KEYBOARD monitor and mouse. If you are using non-PS/2 keyboard and mouse and have PS/2 keyboard and mouse, use them instead. If you have an XP CD with the - same - servicepack level as is installed on your hard drive you can boot to the Recovery Console and run - chkdsk /r Run a drive diagnostic diskette from the drive manufacturer's site and aso run MemTest86 overnight to eliminate their being any problem with read/write errors. I only have a laptop... I ran the chkdsk off the recovery console, but the problem is still there. What does -next- driver mean? What does -same-servicepack level mean? Where WOULD I find the drive manufacter's site? How do I run the MemTest86?What, if anything, do you have plugged into the Laptop? The mup.sys problem is a big issue for many users and can involved any driver following on from mup.sys. You are seeing mup.sys LOADED but the next step of the start-up seems to be responsible for the actual problem.I only have a network card attached -- Dell Truemobile 1300 802.11 b/g PC Card.Have you tried with the card unattached?Stop playing and ......if you have a TRUE problem.......list the operating system and the laptop specs/model....and what you have done to it......end.....I have an Inspiron 1100, Celeron 2.4 GHz and run Windows XP Home on it. I first tried running it in safe mode with the card (Dell Truemobile 1300 802.11 b/g PC Card) unattached (and then I deleted the software for it), but the safe boot still did not get past mup.sys. Quote edemire... No, I've never updated to service pack 2. What's in it? I've heard bad things about it -- like it can cause one's PC to crash. Utter rubbish. Best to make a slipstreamed XPSP2 CD and do a clean install. Then when everything is OK make a drive image to restore with. I burn bootable DVDs with Image for Windows. (See link below.) |

Solve : Random computer lock ups in XP? |
|
Answer» I was wondering if anyone might have a suggestion as to what maybe causing the following problem on an Intel 3G, ATI 800XL AGP, Asrock mobo, 1 Gig DDR dual channel. Thanks for any thoughts on the matter. I have no idea what to really look at.... I guess, I'll start stripping parts and trying to run just with video, hard drive, mobo, ram, and processor only. You might want to test the RAM with memtest86 (free download at www.memtest86.com) and let that run for a few hours. The hard drive maker should have a diagnostics tool for checking that. CI am guessing all the fans are operational. Could you try with a vanilla PCI video card and see if that works OK as well? Bad power supply and overheating are 2 other possibilities. You have stated this quote;>Loaded SP2 and did a reboot. System does not come up all the way into Windows. It hangs on the splash screen that has the scrolling "working" bar. I did a hard reboot. It would not load all the way into Safe Mode, it hung on the scrolling drivers being loaded. I went ahead and started to reload XP again from CD... while loading the XP install GUI, the computer locks up again. Finally, got a fresh clean XP Pro installed with NO drivers and no service packs. COmputer seemed to be running fine and then it froze up again. Rebooted it, however, it would not load into XP. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ What are you assumptions........to this.^^^ |

Answer» Hey EVERYONE I'm new here. I've been having this problem with my computer. My screen is fine until I start up a game, any game at all, then the screen either gets out of position (getting cut off on ONE side and black stripes on the other) or really zoomed in. Solve : restore RAM???? |
|
Answer» how do i RESTORE my RAM? I have 248mb of RAM and im supposed to have 256mb of RAM. And would RAM be added if i conect an external harddrive?btw i have a sony vaio WINDOWS XP home editionRAM is RAM, it doesn't go anywhere unless it is being shared with a video adapter. What graphics chip are you using? What model of Sony Vaio is this?then how do i stop my RAM from being shared, sony PCV-RS310First we have to know the video adapter to see if it is sharing system memory. If it is, there is nothing you can do about it. Sometimes it can be adjusted throught the BIOS, but there is no separate memory on graphics adapter in these cases. No videovemory=can't see the screen. and would an external harddrive solve this problem??? Memory and Hard drive space are two different things. The amount of RAM could be increased depending on what is in there and the number of available slots. The biggest hard drive in the world would not affect it an iota. That model has an integrated Intel 845GV graphics chip, so you will need to buy more RAM to increase the TOTAL. Here is a link to that model: http://yahoo.pcworld.com/yahoo/article/0,aid,112291,00.asp You apparently have 1 stick of DDR-266 SDRAM and 1 open memory slot to add more. How do i see if my video adapter is sharing memory? How would i go about adjusting it?By knowing the Intel model # that has been confirmed. They all do.how do i find the intel #?I already told you in a previous POST - Intel 845GV graphics. k bro, now how do I adjust it? |

Solve : CPU Tweaking Killed Me!? |
|
Answer» DEAR smart PEOPLE, I recently messed around in my BIOS to find my CPU Speed and make it faster. I was stupid and sped it up and now, when i turn on my computer, my monitor doesnt even come on. My monitor says it can't find a signal. HOW DO I FIX THIS?!?!? I just payed to get it reformatted and now its all messed up again because i tryed tweaking my cpu speed! Please computer wizes, help me! I really need help! Please and thankyou for reading! This is what i Did I got a my computer reformatted 8 days ago. Last night I wanted to make it FASTER. I restarted my PC Went into BIOS by pressing "DEL" Then I selected "CPU" I went in Highlighted my CPU speed that said "DEFAULT" Pressed the "+" sign to make my CPU faster. Exited the BIOS Program Restarted my PC And now my monitor doesn't turn on. I am thinking because my other computer parts can't comply with the cpu speed and same with my Monitor. How do i fix it?Put it BACK like it was and leave it? If you have to pay to get the operating system loaded, you are not competent enough to SAFELY mess with ANY settings at any time.Jack T Green........ Quote I just payed to get it reformatted and now its all messed up again because i tryed tweaking my cpu speed! My advice to you is to take it back to whomever fixed it for you the last time .........Tell them what you did .........Have them repair it ....... AND THEN........... Remember .....If it ain't broke don't fix it ........particularly when you dont understand what it is your doing . If your lucky you haven't damaged anything . dl65 If you don't know what you're doing, you shouldn't mess around in the BIOS. Remove the CMOS battery for 10 seconds to reset the CMOS to default values. It's quite possible you have managed to fry that CPU and or the MBoard itself. Take the good advice given above and best of luck to you. Without you guys, i dont know what to do. I want to thank the one person who didnt yell at me. Im just a little kid trying to get the best of my pc. All of you guys that supported one another to fix this problem, i truly thank you. It works and im back on my precious computer. For the ones that flamed, think maybe some people aren't so good with computers or are illiterate like me. You might just find Karmha will go around to you.If you call what we posted 'flaming' You're going to have one *censored* of a time in high school. Welcome to the real world, kid.hold down the del on boot .......bios........then chose the default option..from the on-screen list....you may be lucky.....I saw no flaming... patio. Quote
Now your post is signature hahah merlin_2. Your funny! I said SPECIFICALLY i didn't have my monitor availible as in, because of the CPU Tweaking, IT DOESNT TURN ON THE MONITOR but still, thanks anyways. The solution was the battery "trick" in the motherbaord. Thanks whoever that suggested that |

Solve : Can't Boot: "Operating System Not Found"? |
|
Answer» I've got a nasty problem. When I restart my computer, all I get is a black screen with the message "Unable to Find Operating System." No, I don't think the hard drive's dead. As I state above You can somehow sense if the HDD has given up the ghost? That's cool. Where do you learn that? Before you re-image take a look at your boot.ini file using Notepad...something might be awry in there. patio. Quote
No, I'm no expert, but since my OS is on my C drive and it boots into windows normally once I use my XP boot diskette, the drive appears to be in working order. Also, Partition Magic lists it as "healthy." But thanks for your your help, Raptor. Ok, Patio, here's something odd: a search of my C: drive turned up no boot.ini file, only a boot.ini.backup file in C:/Windows/pss/ In Notepad it reads as follows: Quote [boot loader] Could it be that my boot.ini file is missing? How would I fix it? Quote
If you have a bootdiskette with your original ntldr, ntdetect.com and boot.ini files in the A: drive then it should boot you to the hard drive. Just make sure that your ntldr and ntdetect.com files are there on the root directory [C:] I SUGGEST that what you should have done from the Recovery Console was to type - fixboot - and a new boot.ini file would have been placed on the root directory [C:] having been produced from the boot.ini.backup file. You could also change the file extension removing the - .backup - part and try re-booting as long as the ntldr and ntdetect.com files are present. See the bootdisks section on the link below for the - bootiniedit - bootdisk, and others, which may come in handy one day. Quote You could also change the file extension removing the - .backup - part and try re-booting as long as the ntldr and ntdetect.com files are present. If I try this, where (in which directory) should I put the boot.ini file? And where should the ntldr and ntdetect.com files be?Open My Computer and CLICK on the C: drive ICON. Go to Tools, Folder Options, View, and unhide hidden files and folders and hidden system files. Click Apply and OK. The three files in question should show on the root of C: I.E. C:\boot.ini , etc. Thanks for your help. Right now, none of those three files shows up in just C: I did a search and found ntldr and ntdetect.com in C:\WINDOWS\SevicePackFiles\i386 As I mentioned earlier, I found boot.ini.backup in C:\WINDOWS\pss Just to get this straight, should I: Copy those three files to C: and then rename boot.ini.backup to boot.ini? Quote Thanks for your help. Sounds good to me. I just looked at my own C:\WINDOWS\pss\boot.ini.backup file and it is just as it was before I installed a second copy of XP on the D: drive partition. I would copy those three files to a floppy as well. Also, those three files are on my XP boot diskette in A: Could those also simply be copied to C: ? If so, which would be better to use, those files on my XP boot diskette, or the ones in the locations I mention just above?I would say either. You know that the ones on the floppy work OK, as long as the floppy is VIRUS free. :)OK, thanks, I'll try that now. Wish me luck...Good luck. We're all counting on you. |

Solve : My computer is dieing? |
|
Answer» I am having major problems with my computer. It is running very slowly, it can take a few minutes just to open up a browser or other program. It is always freezing up, so I have to turn off the system manualy, which cant be good for it. I purchased my comp about 5 months ago and it ran fine, even better when I upgraded my ram and video card. I recently got a dsl connection and have filled my hard drive almost completly full. I have 500 mb left. I dont know if that could be affecting it or not. I scan for VIRSUS every week using both norton and ad-aware, and norton is my firewall as well. I dont belive its a virus. Other than that I havent did any thing to my comp. I am having major problems with my computer running very slowly. It can take a few minutes just to open up a browser or other program. Click on the link below and scroll down to Disk Cleanup. Your computer won't start if you leave it much longer with insufficient space for the paging file. Ok I did all the things listed, and it helped a little. I deleted about 15 gigs worth of stuff too. But it was still running real slow, so I decided to reinstall windows. This did fix my problem, my comp is running great now.... exept I lost everything that was in My Document I dont understand what happened, when I look at my hard drive it tells me I have 16 gigs of free space, close to what I had before I renstalled. But I had ATLEAST 20 gig worth of video files in My Documen/My videos. But Its no longer there, and when I run a search I cant find it either!! If it deleted it I would think it would show me with 40+ free HD space. So whats going on? what on earth did I do? Im realy confused, and getting very frustrated I would bury it with all pc honours.......and have a pc priest to speak over the grave.......or send it to india.....where they screw up the world and themselves....by trying to extract the gold from the parts. Thanks for not helping... Sorry, Im not good with computers... What does the events log report......admin tools...... Do you use psp......bearshare/limewire/kazza.... What ram sticks are they......Sorry, dont know what events log report is. I use BearShare, Ram is Super Talent DDR 184 Pin Dimm dont know if thats what you need or not :-/something or some body ......may have taken over your pc.....the events log.......can be found in the control panel admin tools.......it list most things...... download TREND ONLINE and scan for bugs.......or spysweeper........or advanced system optimizer........use a search engine........download.com......is one of many.....Do a clean install, check your partitions as you do it.if you use p2p programs like bear share and yourt hard drive is almost full (meaning you use it a lot) you have an excellent chance of having spyware/adware/trojans. have you scanned for all of these? AVG alone is not enough. The full hard drive is a problem, and you must delete some of these warez or Windows will not work right. |

Solve : Microsoft crash analysis? |

Answer» My operating system is windows 2000xp and is now crashing on a regular basis. I forwarded the fault on to microsoft who reply with possible fault with ATI graphics driver. I have checked my system information and find that i have a RADEON 9200 SE with the following driver ati2dvag.dll version 5.2.3790.2 Do i have to update the driver or should i contact the pc. manufacturer for guidance. I have not installed service pack 2 patch as the first time I tried i finished up having to completely re-install my operating system. And now only download 'critical' windows updates. I run a firewall/reliable anti-virus software and a spyware package. I am as I'm sure you will recognise still pretty much a novice so would appreciate an easy to UNDERSTAND solution if possible. Regards, Mike. Follow you own advise M_2>Do i have to update the driver or should i contact the pc. manufacturer for guidance. What does the events log reveal......c/panel admin tools. Quote My operating system is Windows XP and is now crashing on a regular basis. I forwarded the fault on to Microsoft who reply with possible fault with ATI graphics driver. Hello Mike, and welcome to the crazy forum. If you open the Control Panel and click on System, Hardware and Device manager look for your driver in the list. Click on the + sign then right-click on the entry and click on Update driver... Do you know if the card is properly seated in the motherboard? Sometimes re-seating the card helps as the action of pulling it out and pushing it back in again cleans up the contact surfaces. If you click on the link below and look for the .pdf file on re-seating RAM modules you'll see how to get in to the case and how to take PROPER anti-static precautions. I pull out all power cables, disconnect all peripherals and lay the case on its side to make it easier to WORK on, then, whilst holding the bare metal casing with my right hand I press the power button in for ten seconds to equalise any residual charge across the mainboard. You still need to be gentle but firm when re-seating the cards. Never be brutal or you can DAMAGE the mainboard. If you want to make a good job of installing SP2 and you have an XP CD it is best to slipstream SP2 together with your CD and do a clean install. I can hear - the scream - from here. \ö/Blame winxp sp updates for the problems.......many more to follow!........i always stick with things that work.? Quote i always stick with things that work.? Solve : Will a Boot CD solve my problem?? |
|
Answer» Please bear with me! My knowledge of computers is limited, but I'm working on that! I have a Gateway 834GM with Windows XP Media Edition. Yesterday morning it started inadvertently restarting. Click the link below and then on the first link and run a full system scan and see what that does.STOP 0X00000024If it has a diskette drive as per the illustration... FORMAT DRIVE AND PERFORM FULL SYSTEM RECOVERY USING GATEWAY SYSTEM RECOVERY WINDOWS XP RECOVERY CDsQuite often the CDs just need to be carefully cleaned to prevent read errors. Are the Recovery CDs which were made CDRs or are they CD-RW? If they are CD-RW I would use a good computer to copy them to CDR as CD-RWs are notoriously unreliable. It is just as well to scan the CDs for virii because if they were made when a virus was present they might be unuseable and need to be treated before copying to new CD media. With the method outlined by Gateway you should first press 'R' and then press 'F' to Format and perform a Full recovery.Even with a new computer you may have transit problems caused by carriage. My own computer had a loose sound card and the RAM modules needed to be re-seated. There were also some plugs which had not been fully pushed home until they - click. Just as well to check and then run MemTest86 on the RAM modules to see if there are any errors and also obtain the drive manufacturer's drive diagnostic diskette and run a drive test. (You will need a floppy diskette drive for those.) If you don't have a floppy drive you should ask someone to burn a bootable CD called UBCD to a CDR and run the appropriate tests from the CD. If any hardware components are faulty you should be covered by your warranty.Hi. Thanks so much for your replies. I used the instructions you linked from the Gateway site, and did the system recovery. Everything worked perfectly and I was able to follow each step until I got to #12. I hit "restart" and it began. But then it said "Press F11 to start recovery" and a timer that counted 3, 2, 1 then the screen goes blank. Nothing but black. Did you press F11 ? Does your computer come with a floppy drive? Just how big is the drive, and can you get hold of an XP CD to use for partitioning and formatting? No, I didn't press F11 this time, but I did do the F11 Recovery last night, if that makes a difference. No floppy drive. "Just how big is the drive, and can you get hold of an XP CD to use for partitioning and formatting?" I don't know?!? Sorry! I realized that I still have the internet connection plugged in the computer when I did the recovery. So, I disconnected the internet and tried again. In the middle of disc 5 it suddenly shut down. Now it's back to the "HTLDR is missing" and it won't start Windows at all. I'm about ready to throw this thing out of the window! If all else fails, would I need to take it to a professional? Or buy a new hard drive or something? Thanks again. Quote No, I didn't press F11 this time, but I did do the F11 Recovery last night, if that makes a difference. No floppy drive. Gateway 834GM Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz (HT) / 1GB DDR / 250GB SATA HDD / DVD±RW Dual-Layer / Media Reader / Windows XP Media Center 2005 How old is yours? Is it still under warranty? The way to start is to run a memory check and test the hard-drive. If opening up the casing is not your thing then I would take it to a professional. Is there someone local? It sounds new enough that it should be under warranty. I would contact Gateway in any event. They have your money. Let them prove why you should (or should not) be a repeat customer. You need the disks........ |

Solve : I have tried Windows XP Batch File Help? |
|
Answer» I'm trying to create a BATCH file in Windows XP that I can put in my startup folder that will start a program after a certain time delay after Windows starts. I NEED this for a messaging program we use at work that I always forget to start but it NEEDS to wait until I get connected to the work network. This would require about a 5 minute delay to give me time to get connected then automatically start. |

Solve : Wierd slow right click? |
|
Answer» Yesterday the computer worked fine, Today, when I right-click the mouse, it takes a second for the screen to appear - ghostly at first, then comes on. Then I noticed the problem with other stuff - even my hearts card game's slow, and that's scary because it came with Windows. I ran virus check, negative. I have plenty of free memory. I tried system restore, no luck. Even when I click on All Programs and try it, it takes a couple of seconds - and the ghostly screen. I use a Dell Dimension XPS, WIN XP and it worked fine. Any help would be great. Thanks. Quote I ran virus check, negative. Tell us what you USED for this? Quote Tell us what you used for this? Norton, just updated. By elimination, I think my problem is with the graphics accelerator, where would I post the question? - Thanks Quote Norton, just updated Not conclusive. Quote By elimination, I think my problem is with the graphics accelerator So you have diagnosed the problem (This will be fun) Leave this thread going, everyone checks in this forum and it gives people an insight into your problem. Quote
Please I still don't know how to fix it.Download and install EVEREST Home. This will tell you all the components in that machine. Once you've determined which vid card you have visit the manufacturers site and see if there are updated video drivers available. I'm still not quite sure why you suspect the vid card though. Is this a wireless mouse ? ? patio. If Norton is all you are using you may have other problems now, and certainly will later. Quote
I got a message saying something about that when I put in Stand By. It says that it'll go into software mode because it can't do it in hardware mode - or something like it. :-/ I didn't write down hoping it'd solve the problem. I'll check with your recommendation and if it works, I'll post it - and write down what the error message says. Thanks.Give a scan for spywares also.Status: I BOUGHT and ran spyware, removed all supposed trojan and adware (193 of them). No change. By the way, [glb]a curse on all these people who write the viruses, trojans, spywares and adwares, may their lives be full of unhappiness and frustration![/glb] I downloaded Everest (very helpful), ran it and tried to contact ati - see following. The original error messages said: "SMARTSAVE has reset your graphics accelerator as it was no longer responding to graphics driver commands. Please tell ATI Tech" "SMARTSAVE was unable to fully recover from a hardware deadlock, and has swichted to software rendering. To restore hardware rendering you must restart your computer." - It didn't So I went to Microsoft (after trying to e-mail ati for 5 hours of navigating their site) to download the most recent driver. Then the fun started I got a blue screen saying that I have a problem with my ativga2 or something (my driver, I know), that I should return to a previous setting - which I did - since the driver is in an infinite loop. Then I get a new error message: "VPU Recover was unable to..." you get the drift. The original problem's still there - all POP up windows slooowly come up. But it looks more and more like my card has failed - a hardware problem. I have a "ticket" sent to ati to see if they can come up with a solution. Meanwhile, if anyone has an idea, I'm willing to give it thought. Thanks for ALL your help - I always willing learn more stuff.By the time you solve this, if you solve it, you could have formatted the drive and reinstalled Windows. I would try a Linux Live CD to see if it works OK with that. Then you know if it was hardware or software you have to resolve. What did you buy? Thanks for ALL your help - I always willing learn more stuff. Starting with English. I bought Spyware Doctor. My brother is a Linux guy, and maybe one day I'll do it. All I can say is, I'm tired of technical difficulties when all I'm trying to do is play a game... Of course, it got worse. Now everytime I turn on the computer I get the blue screen with the message that the program is on an endless loop. I'll try ATI again. Their "solution" made things worse, maybe they'll have something else. What is the stop error messageOn the blue screen it says the computer stopped loading to PROTECT from damage due to problems with ati2dvag and that the software is in an endless loop, that I should contact the vendor (I did) and upgrade the software (I did, that's what got me here!). It has the stop #, but I didn't copy it down. Now I'm afraid of turning off the computer, I depend on it too much. The speed response of the mouse is BACK, so the original problem is gone Now if I can keep my computer from freezing... I've been trying to catch up with some work, maybe tomorrow I'll e-mail ATI again and see what they say. Any other ideas are welcome . |
