Solve : Video CD problems? |
Answer» I made a video CD using Window Movie maker 5.1 complete with images/slides and music. I used a Windows XP computer. I play the Video CD on my TVs DVD player and all is fine however when I play the same Video CD on the PC that I made it on using Windows Media Player the the VCD plays about halfway through then all images/pictures go blank but I hear the audio/music just fine till the end. Ok. I just started using Movie Maker, so I dont know how to do that ?/I meant does the movie play ok in Movie Maker? Quote and since we are here what is the difference between, " Save as" and " Save Project as" ??Save as means you can save the movie as an WMV file for example. Save Project as means you can save the project and re-open it to do some editing before publishing the movie.Ok get the Save Project as feature now, Thanks ! ! ! ! ! ! Bakc to the first issue. I had originally saved the Movie(?) that would eventually become the VCD to the hard drive so when I play the Movie from through Media Player all is good !! But still now quite sure how to play the actual VCD though Window Movie Maker. Ive looked for feature of some kind that indicated "Play" but found nothing. There is a feature that says "Play" but to my knowledge ( and my knowledge is limted in this respect) but it will only play whats in the timeline/storyline. So i am confused ? Please help ?!?!?!?!!? Quote But still now quite sure how to play the actual VCD though Window Movie Maker. You would open the project and run the movie but you said it plays okay as a WMV file so the problem is elsewhere. How are you saving the movie in Movie Maker? This could be the key.I used the "Save to my Computer...." option, then saved the file to My Doc/My Video folders. Then I used Nero to burn it to a CD... Thanks Quote I play the Video CD on my TVs DVD player and all is fine however when I play the same Video CD on the PC that I made it on using Windows Media Player the the VCD plays about halfway through then all images/pictures go blank but I hear the audio/music just fine till the end.Did you play the full video on your DVD player? What happens when you play the video from your My videos folder? My thoughts exactly... I'm thinking it's something wrong in the Nero burn process...but the saved project probably works fine. The video runs well on his DVD player so I'm thinking there may be a problem with Windows Media Player.Yes the saved process runs fine on the PC and the VCD runs fine on the TV but the VCD acts kind of screwy with Windows Media Player any sugestions ? Thank You When you play the saved file what media plays it?Windows Media Player.I can't figure what is wrong with the RECORDING. When I make a DVD I use DVD Flick. I just open DVD Flick, add the video file and set the program to burn to a DVD. You can also play around with to add a title and a special opening screen. Now you have a DVD that will play automatically on any machine. |

Solve : My keyboard stops working when my computer memory is taxed? |
Answer» When i first got this issue I thought, a virus maybe? But it can't be, because it isn't always here. A registery issue? maybe but I've reinstalled the drivers 5 time now, and I've cleaned the registry dozens of times at this point. the only thing i can think of is a signal interruption but that doesn't make sense as the keyboard (which is wireless) works fine until i have a lot of programs open. The keyboard stops recognising key presses, that's all, but i can't do anything about it. My mouse (wired) is fine but my keyboard just stops. From the start of the symptoms it will register any key press intermittently, i occasionally get lucky and it might work for all of 3 letters before it again stops registering key presses. For example
Do I need a Registry Cleaner?: http://www.whatthetech.com/2007/11/25/do-i-need-a-registry-cleaner/Repair Install: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operatingsystems/ss/instxprepair1.htm Oh wow. Thank you, i did thoroughly check this one but that's terrifying. Again, Thanks for the help. |

Solve : Extract computer alias in batch file? |
Answer» I am trying to use the hostname as a conditional in a batch file. I would like to use the alias (not %COMPUTERNAME% mind you) I added to the hosts file and have to make no other changes (i.e. set an env var at startup). This would be equivalent to doing a "hostname -a" in Unix and greping for the alias name. I haven't found any EVIDENCE that PARSING exists using batch so I guess I just NEED a command that will return that alias. Is it out there or any nifty work arounds? |

Solve : Insert a file into a folder by running a Batch Fil? |
Answer» I am trying to find out the easyest way of running a batch file that will save a .XLT template into the template FOLDER, so I dont have to go round every machine and do it manually. I want to mail the Batch file and the UPDATED template to the masses and ask them to run the batch file. This will load the .XLT file into the correct foilder and allow the user to carry on with the day to day use of the file. Can anyone help ??If all of these computers are on a local network, then the easiest thing to do would be to copy the template out to a network share. Solve : Not loading some webpages completely? |
Answer» Lately I have had problems with some webpages not loading completely and in a few cases not at all. I use firefox 29.0.1. But the same issue is on IE8. I tried using Adwcleaner but never again because it somehow interferes with Lenovo's security system on the laptop. What's a Lenovo Security System? Quote You may say Spybot is not recommended, but I've been using it a long time and it's changed a lot over the years. And so do Windows and antiviruses which seems spybot has been more of a conflict, false positive detection and slows down the system. Quote Spywareblaster I also use. But lately all it finds is a couple of cookies.Spybot and Spywareblaster has a 50/50 chance of usage and recommendations nowadays but I would prefer the feature of Spywareblaster over Spybot protection. I was able to install Java. My Java security setting level is Medium (recommended). I tried to edit the Exception site list, to allow one of the sites that is (401) blocked, but I cannot see what the list contains, and when I thought I had added the exception, I could not see it on the page. Maybe Java is blocking their own form! Some pages that do not load, completely, such as reddit.com, are missing something that would allow me to comment on a topic, for example. I can sometimes type in the comment box, sometimes not. If I can type in the box, then when I finish the comment and hit post, or save, or the enter KEY, nothing happens. But I can see in the lower right corner of my PC screen, "javascript:void(0)". What does this mean? Searching online for this I get lots of results that I cannot understand, in code. Other times the save button appears to work because another page opens, but it says something like "Oops! there seems to be nothing here", or "page not found the page you requested does not exist." And because of this problem I cannot send a message to reddit to ask for a solution. |

Solve : Desktop and screensaver problem? |
Answer» I need some help. My brother asked me to do some work on his friend's computer. He's not computer savvy and wanted to get off the internet. It's an XP with the codes on the box but he doesn't have the disks because it was given to him by his daughter. I proceeded to remove a lot of junk that he had downloaded and ran some scans to make sure it was clean. My problem is that it will not hold the desktop picture and the screensaver will not work even though the preview works. The desktop picture STAYS for about 5 mins. after booting then it flashes a few TIMES and reverts to a blue screen. I figured I will just re-install the OS using my old XP Home Edition disk with SP1 which is the same as what he has on the computer. The only difference is that he has SP3 which I cannot uninstall. This is probably why I can't do a re-install. Any IDEAS how I can get around this problem. If I could fix the desktop and screensaver, I would just leave it as is. If you go the Repair Install route...and then do the SP updates it should work... You could create a SP3 slipstream of XP Home + all updates pretty easily, so that upon install or repair install, its fully patched to the very last patch. The repair install off of this SP3 slipstream option is best if you have programs etc that you dont want to lose etc. Otherwise for clean install, install XP Home SP1 and then perform service pack updates to SP3 for any picky programs that require XP SP2+ to function correctly. For the fact that this computer wont be USED online, the biggest concern would be for it to be SP2 minimum for certain software that require SP2 such as some games and drivers etc, mainly due to the .net framework updates that are part of it. So if going the clean install route, you might as well make it SP3.Worth a Look, just in case. Quote If you go the Repair Install route...and then do the SP updates it should work...I don't receive the Repair option. It's just install or NOTHING. Quote You could create a SP3 slipstream of XP Home + all updates pretty easily, so that upon install or repair install, its fully patched to the very last patch. The repair install off of this SP3 slipstream option is best if you have programs etc that you dont want to lose etc.I have an ISO of SP3 but it really doesn't matter if SP3 is installed since he doesn't want to access the internet. Quote Otherwise for clean install, install XP Home SP1 and then perform service pack updates to SP3 for any picky programs that require XP SP2+ to function correctly. It won't let me install because it says my version is too old. I'm suspecting that it's because of SP3. If I can find a way to install the OS, I will add SP3. I suppose I could slave the drive to one of my desktops and wipe the drive. That should allow a clean install. The Repair Option should come up after the Install is chosen... It's in the guide above.Just an update. I managed to install XP by booting with the CD. Since this computer won't be going on the internet, should I install SP3? Quote Since this computer won't be going on the internet, should I install SP3? I would install SP3 for many offline reasons. As well as some software to operate state in minimum requirements Windows XP Service Pack 2 required, which is really SP2+ Here is a list of problems cured with SP1 and 1a : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324720 Here is a list of problems cured with SP2 : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811113 Here is a list of problems cured with SP3 : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946480I still can't get the screensaver to work even though it does it in preview. Of course, I need the drivers for the on-board sound card and the PCI card.Where's the screensaver from ? ? That may be the issue right there. The drivers will be at the MBoard manuf. site...The screensavers are the regular ones that come with Windows. It wouldn't work before I re-install the OS and they still won't work. What's the procedure to install the drivers?Just following up if everything is resolved? It was nothing that a re-install didn't cure. ThanksCool |

Solve : DreamSpark XP? |
Answer» Is it possible any more to get XP (or XP SP...) via DreamSpark? It's disappeared off Dreamspark for me. Probably since it's now totally unsupported. You'll still get Vista, 7 and 8 though so I can't think of a reason to use XP.General Reference: Access SOFTWARE through a DreamSpark subscriptionQuote I can't think of a reason to use XP.How about a lot of one's software and hardware won't work on Windows 8?Cameron is the upgrade enforcer extrodinaire'... Or did you notice it before ? ? Personally i think it's a dis-service to those that want the choice...but that's just me. After all it's a Help Forum...not an opinion Forum. Quote from: solap9 on August 10, 2014, 01:43:41 PM Is it possible any more to get XP ...Simple answer, Yes! It is still possible to get XP from a wide variety of sources. Many legal, some gray market. A grey market is a legal market that is not approved by the 'official' people do to some trade restrictions or concerns. You can buy the CD only if you have a COA with product key already. Or you can by a CD with the COA and Key for a higher price. Of course Microsoft does not support it. Ostensibly, any sale of XP is to be used for maintenance of an older system. Or upgrade for a n very old system that can not be upgraded to a current Windows OS. Windows XP has lower requirements for clock, RAM and drive space. So it will continue to be available on the grey market for as long as there are old PCs at yard sales and swap meets. So, is it impossible to order a new PC with Windows XP? No, you can't. Quote from: SuperDave on August 10, 2014, 04:44:11 PM How about a lot of one's software and hardware won't work on Windows 8? Dreamspark is "all about giving students Microsoft professional-level developer and designer tools at no cost so that students can chase their dreams and create the next big breakthrough in technology - or just get a head start on their career." Providing XP would be pointless and provide no purpose towards that goal. Also forgot to mention, if the OP has already ordered XP from Dreamspark in the past, it will still be available to download from their historical PURCHASES section, it just doesn't allow new orders to be placed. Quote from: SuperDave on August 10, 2014, 04:44:11 PM How about a lot of one's software and hardware won't work on Windows 8?Then you can order Windows 7 Pro through Dreamspark then use XP Mode to get the best of both worlds. Quote from: Geek-9pm on August 10, 2014, 05:32:38 PM It is still possible to get XP from a wide variety of sources. Many legal, some gray market. A grey market is a legal market that is not approved by the 'official' people do to some trade restrictions or concerns. The only way you could legally buy a copy of XP now would be a retail boxed set on eBay that someone may have found lying around. I presume those "grey market" things you are talking about are the multitude of people on eBay selling COAs from old machines - These are not legal licences and are directly violating the licence if you install it on a different PC.My intent was not to start a rant about Grey Market. It is a reality of the world we live in. One can do a Google of the phrase "Grey Market" and find the pros and cons of it. In some scenarios it is legal but hose in power do not LIKE it because it undermines their control of the market. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey_market Quote A grey market, or parallel market[citation needed],[1] is the trade of a commodity through distribution channels which, while legal, are unofficial, unauthorized, or unintended by the original manufacturer. The most common type of grey market is the sale of imported goods (brought by small import companies or individuals not authorized by the manufacturerMicrosoft does indeed monitor eBay and other auction sites an d stops sales that are blatant non-legal sales of its products. Therefore, if you find a vendor that has been selling Windows XP discs for some time, he likely got a legal box of real original discs before MS stopped sales of XP. The OEM CDs will work on the specified equipment and are legal and are allowed by MS. My point was if someone arrives here asking assistance on using XP then they should get assistance on using XP... Simple concept. Quote from: patio on August 11, 2014, 11:49:31 AM My point was if someone arrives here asking assistance on using XP then they should get assistance on using XP...My thought was that he wanted XP, not DreamSpark, If he has a DreamSpark account he ought to get of copy of Windows 7. Unless he really wants Windows XP. If he has a PC that came with Windows XP and he lost the CD, he can get the OEM CD at a fraction of the cost of the retail version. Such are legal on eBay with some limitations IMPOSED by Microsoft and the OEM. Perhaps the OP will respond again, if need be.Dreamspark likely doesn't offer XP because it conflicts with the goals of the program. Offering XP and expecting technological innovation is sort of like offering some balsa wood and elastic and expecting people to come up with innovative Jet ENGINE designs. Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 11, 2014, 01:11:14 PM Dreamspark likely doesn't offer XP because it conflicts with the goals of the program. Solve : Italian windows xp? |

Answer» Hi everyone. • To open Regional and Language Options, click Start, click Control Panel, click Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options, and then click Regional and Language Options.https://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/int_pr_mui.mspx?mfr=trueI tried that, it doesn't work :/Dictation. Here on this forum members are forbidden to discuss any kind of hacking or patching that would encourage people to violate the copyrights of Microsoft or any other software publisher. Basically, the problem here is you are dealing with an operating system that Microsoft no longer wishes to actively support, but they still claim their copyright. They have good reason to do that. Their business plan is to have people buy new software that the company can readily support. Just think about it, if they had the support every piece of software that ever produced. The workload would be unbearable. At the present time, Microsoft is supporting about four or five operating systems. If you include the systems that are USED on servers. If you really WANT to continue using Windows XP, you need to obtain an English version that will work on the computer, and you need to have a product key that will validate the Windows XP with Microsoft validation service. One method would be to go to garage sales and thrift shops and use stores and look for an old computer that has the Windows XP certificate of authority on the underside or backside of the case. Sometimes you can pick up very old computers for slowest $25 and received with it. The certificate of authority. That might be a possible solution to pick up a cheap, legal copy in English. If the copy you have is not the multi-language version sold in Europe, it will be near impossible to change it over to the English. Instead, you have to obtain an English version and install it on the computer you have. Now if you wish to buy a real legal Windows XP CD made by Microsoft, expect to pay around $60 up to $80 for the CD with the product key number. You need both. The other ALTERNATIVE would be to contact a friend who works in IT organization or a service organization and ask them for help. Was some individual might be able to do for you , individually, would be something that would not be considered legal here on this forum. That this is much as I can SAY about the matter Moderator, cut or edit this as you wish. |

Solve : Signal is excellent and speed is 1 mbps to 8 mbps?? |
Answer» I'm fairly ignorant to how COMPUTERS work. My computer is about 10 years old, it's a Dell, was $1,100 at that time, it's a desktop. I use "Broadstripe" cable/internet company (Not my choice, live with my mom) Not sure of the internet speed she purchased. (Probably the cheapest knowing her). I did purchase a SOMEWHAT expensive router. It's a "N600 wireless dual band router" (Model WNDR3400v2). I'm using a USB wireless netgear connector. The signal strength is very good to excellent. But the speed is very slow. Between 1 mbps to 54 mbps (during a good minute). And the internet connection goes out frequently. About 5 times since I Started this question. Does anybody KNOW whats wrong or if there is any thing I can do to help speed up the computer? Changing cable/internet company is out of the question as it is not my house. Would a different type of wireless connector help? What about a Ad Hoc connection? My son has a wireless ready laptop that runs just fine on the internet as well as all the other wireless ready laptops in the house. My desktop is about about 30 feet from the router. Any help is appreciated. From a quick look at you post, I THINK you are not using the right driver for the USB adapter. Also, XP has to be up to date to work with wireless. |

Solve : Rotate display no lomger works.? |
Answer» A few weeks ago I could rotate my display in XP. Just using the arrows with ctrl+alt would made the display shift 90 or 180 DEGREES. But it stopped working. That's a function of your video card, not Windows. See if your video card mfr supplied a Hotkeys utility that would control that and see that it gets loaded at startup. Not the issue...it was working prior to now. Quote from: patio on August 29, 2014, 09:52:16 AM Not the issue...it was working prior to now.Windows Updates often INCLUDE unnecessary driver updates for some reason, an update to the Graphics Driver could cause this. Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 29, 2014, 10:40:47 AM Windows Updates often include unnecessary driver updates for some reason, an update to the Graphics Driver could cause this.I thin k you are right. It is a Intel chip in a stock Dell desktop, a 745. A few weeks ago it was working. There is no rollback. It is possible to go into the display settings and force it in the other position, but that is awkward. You can not just flip it aback with hot key. Oh WELL, another reason to finish my transition to Windows 7. By the time I get there, Windows 7 will be at end of life! To determine...instead of assume it was a Win update do a system restore point.... |

Solve : Updating Google Chrome Browser? |
Answer» I dusted off an old Windows XP laptop despite its no longer being supported and tried to update the Google CHROME Browser, which would fail each time it tried to update automatically. I uninstalled it thinking I would REINSTALL it with the latest version. I was unaware of the system requirements and my anemic Celeron CPU does not meet the Pentium 4 standards, so my attempts fail. I have tried their alternate installer unsuccessfully and have also tried older versions of Chrome, which Filehippo offers, to no avail. I do have other browsers which I can use, but my PREFERENCE is Chrome. Any ideas? You COULD try a System Restore if there are any Restore points before you uninstalled it.Thanks SuperDave. Unfortunately I have no restore points prior to the UNINSTALL. I think I will go with Safari.Try checking oldapps download website for Google Chrome http://www.oldapps.com/google_chrome.phpThanks Jason 2074. Google no longer supports the old app site. |

Solve : Switching computer back on? |
Answer» This evening I added a new programme to my WIFE's computer. I had to turn off then turn back on and it is asking for my Microsoft Key numbers. The problem is I do not have them. The computer was set up in a local shop who are no longer operational. It is an older type programme ie XP. The computer is totally legal and has always worked completely ok, but there does not seem to be any way of getting in to the system without the Microsoft prompt that KEEPS coming up. |

Solve : Can I not install a Fresh cokpy of XP amd get updates?? |
Answer» What I have read on this is not very good. .. I am not happy with that kind of answer. How do you ever get the updates. You read too much...yet not enough... All XP updates are out there and available up until they shut it down... Much ado 'bout nothing.Read This! Microsoft has shut down support for Windows XP. That means NO More updates, NO More customer support and no more copies of the OS on store shelves. We can RUN what we've got and that's it. Don't expect anything more from MS pertaining to XP. But do we really need anything more from MS? Well, I don't! Never really did! :cool:TheShadow, Thanks for the reply. I wish MS has done a SP4 before they dumped XP. The number of updates after SP3 is a very large number. I do see that some places claim to have 'Windows XP SP4 Unofficial Final' for download. Maybe I will download n it into my sandbox. Likely has malware. Quote Microsoft has shut down support for Windows XP. That means NO More updates,I repaired a friend's compter last WEEK that couldn't connect to the internet for quite some time. It DOWNLOADED SP3 and more than 60 updates when I repaired it.As i said... Quote I wish MS has done a SP4 before they dumped XP. The number of updates after SP3 is a very large number. You can make a slipstream of XP SP3 that has all these updates, so you can perform a clean install and not have any more patching to do, just the Windows activation which is a requirement to avoid it locking you out after 30 days. The SP4 unofficial is just a roll up, the same as SP3 fully patched into a slipstream. |

Solve : No desktop icons, task bar, network connection, all programs not responding? |
Answer» When I log into my user, the screen shows just the blank background... No icons or task bar. Nothing. I have tried explorer.exe but that doesn't help and now no INTERNET connection related stuff works either. And NOW task MANAGER and any programs i DO manage to open stop responding and cannot be ended because task manager is the thing not responding... The computer is incredibly slow taking 10+ minutes to do almost anything. I have no idea what to to as I have no knowledge of this subject. Any help for any of these problems would be greatly appreciated1) What is NEW or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?
