When using IE 6.0 in Windows XP, I try to access my own FTP site by writing:

Now I should be prompted for my password but I am not! Instead a flashlight appears and I wait and wait until IE eventually crashes.

However if I try to logon anonymously, like this:

it works fine!

So why won't it LET me connect as a user with a password?

Ok... so the problem is, i was making  a BAT to SHUT down my computer.. that i would schedual every night at 10:30 or so.. but anyway.. i made the bad file with

and when it executes.. it just shows a cmd window repeatedly doing that. endlessly.

i have had a few viruses torjans for a while and so i downloaded all these anti virus and removed all but a few. So i got Panda Titanium when i installed it, it froze.
when i start up my computer it loads my personal settings and loads only my desktop picture and i cant do anything, few minutes later it automaticly restarts and goes to Log in and so i Click my account and i enter and same thing i see my desktop picture and a few minutes it restarts and goes to the windows xp log in again, it just KEEPS doing that.

Next it almost sounds like you may still have a virus.
I would remove all the anti virus programs you have installed . then I would use another computer and D/l
Stinger ....put it on a disk and then run it on the possibly infected machine .....if you are able to .
Have you tried to BOOT up in safe mode?  At reboot repaetedly press the F8 key

dl65   ???it does the same when i go safe mode, i go safe mode and it asks me to log in as adminstrator or my account, ive tried both, they log in right when it logs in it logs out.  like loading personal settings and then boom saving personal settings   and also ive tried the option that runs windows the previous time it worked fine and same thing happens

Never ... have more than ONE anti-virus program running on a computer.

You can always do on-line scans for free.

If you don't have any data whch must be saved, then I would say that it might be better to start over, partition and format your drive and make a clean install after you order and receive your free MS XP SP2 update CD.

i have a dell laptop, and the keys are messed up.  some work properly, but others type the wrong letter.  my letter a types j......hitting h i get gh.  a couple of keys bring up my start box.  i watched a cdr slide show last night, then this happened this morning when i logged on.  i don't know if that did SOMETHING or not......please help if you know what's wrong, or if you know how i can fix this.  i'm typing on an old keyboard plugged into my mouse port right now.  thanks.

justinsince i posted that message, my keys are working differently.  before most of them typed the wrong letter, sometimes two wrong letters.  now they all type the correct letter, except the keys e, d, c.  those keys do nothing when pushed now.  if anyone has any ideas on what's going on, i'd appreciate it.  i hope my computer isn't going bad on me.  seems weird that they all work now with exception of those three keys.  check your setting in control panel....keyboard icon....what operating sytem are you using..My keys work fine now, and they did yesterday for a little while too...then the c, d, e, and 1, 2 WOULD not work.  a beep sounded when i pressed them, but that's it.  the internet explorer set up screen would then start popping up.  that would get worse and worse until i would have to reboot because every key i hit would bring it back up.

I just use the PC for backing up a few files so I dont have to keep all my important files on one PC ( my main PC) my thought is that if the main PC goes down I have a back up on a secondary PC as well as copies on a PC at work.

If this secondary back PC that I SPEAK of is toast its no big deal. I just wondered if there is a fix as I like to learn new repair/try new repair remedies, just in case anybody should happen to be in the same BOAT!!

Are you doing backup to a USB device?
Are you doing backup over a network?

What kind of backup method are you TRYING?
If using XP, you would use the backup tool in XP and select a directory to backup to an external device or network  drive. 

Or possibly use some other tool suitable for backup.


I am sorry I wasnt clear. I just copy my files to a USB drive from my main PC and walk the USB drive over to the other PC and upload the files through the USb port. I dont have network or use the back up tool and yes I am sure the message was "Kernal Stack input Error "

You need to make a backup using the standard procedure.
rather than just copying files from one computer to to another, you make a backup set that is used to restore a computer to an earlier state.
Trying to copy all files from one computer over to another computer is going to create some serious problems. One can not simply overwrite system files, running computer. So you have to have some way to distinguish between files that are just data files and those files that are system files and cannot be overwritten. While the computer is running.
if you use a backup utility that's built into Windows XP, it will go something like this:
First,the backup program or I ask if you want to or a specific set of folders. Next, it will ask where you want to put the backup image. You will put the backup image into a folder, partition or device that has enough room to store the image file. A backup image file is a collection of all the files and folders that you have specified, but they are not in their original form. That means they do not take the place of any system files that are on another computer. INSTEAD, the files you copy only become part of the backup set that is inside of an image file. Think of the image file as being a wrapper or container that holds the data in a special compressed format.
From what you describe. It sounds like you are just simply copying files from one computer to another. That won't work. When you do a backup, you are making a backup set of data that exists as data, but not executable objects.
I don't mean to doubletalk, you. tried to copy a system file directly over to another PC. There is a conflict when the system file tries to occupy the same space as a system file that is in use. Think of the rule that you can't have two distinct objects occupy the same space at the same time. So that means that executable files on your system have to be stored in some form or they will not been mistaken for executable files of the other computer. Does that make sense?
Also, the backup utility can deal with some of the issues that arise that have to do with some storing a lot of names into a compressed directory. The backup program usually is faster than a straight copy operation. The backup program resolves such issues as to permissions, file locking and some other things associated with I file.
When you do a restore from a backup, the backup program of how do you copy the system file to the system file that already exists. Also, when you do a restore from backup. You can manually select which directories you want to restore which files you want restored.
In general, you want to make frequent backups of the data files that you create yourself. That means your photos, videos and documents, and anything that you have created yourself. Your downloads are not so important because you could probably download them again off of the websites.
As to your programs, programs normally have to be installed by an installer. That means that just copying the program from one computer to another doesn't really work right. Most Windows programs which choir installation; just having the program present on the computer doesn't make it work.
What I do is choose a backup program to write my stuff onto an external USB drive. I usually avoid using my network because the network is not fast enough. The USB drive is usually faster than my network.
What I do about once every three or four months is to make a complete backup the whole system. Then more frequently. I make backups of just the things I have created myself. So that means I make a backup of the my documents folder and also any other folders. I have used for my notes and projects.
The only time I would copy these to another computer is only in the event that my main computer sales and I had to use my secondary computer. I would install the programs I need on the secondary computer and after that restore my personal things from the the backup image of my documents.
I suggest you try making backups using the XP backup utility and try selecting just a few folders and back up to your USB device. Then you might PRACTICE restoring those folders onto your secondary computer as a test to see how accurately it works. But remember, don't attempt to restore any program or system files. That don't work. Only your data and your projects. Can you move from one computer to another. You don't copy programs and systems stuff from one computer to another. Except as part of a backup set for the purpose of having a backup.
Sorry haven't made this post to long, but I don't have any idea what you're past experiences with doing backups so I just kind of rambled on and on.

I made a video CD using Window Movie maker 5.1 complete with images/slides and music. I used a Windows XP computer. I play the Video CD on my TVs DVD player and all is fine however when I play the same Video CD on the PC that I made it on using Windows Media Player the the VCD plays about halfway through then all images/pictures go blank but I hear the audio/music just fine till the end.

Side NOTE: If it makes a difference, I saved the VCD from Windows Movie Maker to My Doc/Video FOLDER on the hard drive then used Nero to burn it to a CD-R.

What could be the ISSUE ?

When i first got this issue I thought, a virus maybe? But it can't be, because it isn't always here. A registery issue? maybe but I've reinstalled the drivers 5 time now, and   I've cleaned the registry dozens of times at this point. the only thing i can think of is a signal interruption but that doesn't make sense as the keyboard (which is wireless) works fine until i have a lot of programs open. The keyboard stops recognising key presses, that's all, but i can't do anything about it. My mouse (wired) is fine but my keyboard just stops. From the start of the symptoms it will register any key press intermittently, i occasionally get lucky and it might work for all of 3 letters before it again stops registering key presses. For example
if i were to type this line right now with only notepad open it will type almost completely normally
BUT once I open a few memory intensive programs like skype and chrome (i have maybe 4 tabs open) the same line looks like this

PLEASE HELPI don't doubt that "cleaning the registry" has contributed to your problem. Registry cleaners cause problems, they do not cure them. The "best" registry cleaners are benign and do absolutely nothing, but the worst of them can cause major damage.

For starters, I would suggest a repair install of XP. If the issue continues you might just want to switch to a wired keyboard.Actually the cleaner helped increase the amount of programs I could have open for a while... not that that was what i was hopping for, I also defragged my drives.

Could you give a basic run through of a repair install (as jn do i get out the disk and reinstall or is it an in computer option).

Getting a wired keyboard would LIKELY annoy the other users so I'm trying everything ELSE I can first. ThanksLet me SAY it again - registry cleaners are useless at best and can cause serious harm to your Windows INSTALLATION. I strongly urge you to uninstall any registry cleaners you have on your system. Here, read this:

The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system INOPERABLE. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.
• Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. I'd contact Dell, or swap the hard drive out with a different unprotected HDD. My computer crashed last night.  It froze up when trying to get online, and I couldn't ctrl-alt-delete to restart it, so I had to reboot it.  When it rebooted, all kinds of files needed to run Windows were not there including turbovbf.vxd, nwredir.vxd, nwlink.vxd, nscl.vxd, vgartd.vxd, c:/windows/system/gxpmw.vxd, wpsrcom.386, wpssem.386, wpsrbnd.386, turbovcd.vxd, and also "error loading mouse.drv you must reinstall windows"

So, I need to reinstall Windows to get my computer to boot up.  I could not start the computer in safe mode.  ANOTHER major problem, is that my FLOPPY drive (drive A:) does not work.  So, I can't use a boot disk in the floppy drive to get the computer booted up.

How can I reinstall Windows 98 WITHOUT a floppy disk drive or boot disk?  Is it possible.  I can get MS DOS prompts, and I do have the Windows 98 CD, but I can't figure out how to boot up the computer or reinstall windows 98 from the CD in MS DOS mode.  I do have a functioning Zip drive.  Can I use the Zip drive as a boot up disk?

Any help would be appreciated!You would save your self a lot of trouble by installing a new floppy drive. ($12 locally.)

If you can get to another computer then you could make a bootable CD on an 80mm MiniCD to use in your CD-ROM and if your BIOS will support booting from the CD-ROM you could change the BIOS boot sequence and then boot to to the bootcd.

Once booted, and having typed in the install command, you then just have to SWAP the CD for your Windows '98 CD and hit the Enter key.

I hope you have your ProductKey code handy!

If your Cabinet files are on your HDD you can do a re-install from there.

X:\Windows\Options\Cabs\install , or,

X:\Windows\Options\Install\install , (or setup)

Where X is the CD-ROM drive letter. (Usually D or E, but then mine is H or Q , so it doesn't always follow.)

I have a PROBLEM when COLD-starting XP. It always restarts after the post and first Windows screen, then gives me the option to start in safe mode or last known GOOD configuration or to start windows normally. It will start normally from that point on. I have no PROBLEMS on a restart, just a cold start.

When did the problem first occur?

I am trying to use the hostname as a conditional in a batch file.  I would like to use the alias (not %COMPUTERNAME% mind you) I added to the hosts file and have to make no other changes (i.e. set an env var at startup).  This would be equivalent to doing a "hostname -a" in Unix and greping for the alias name.  I haven't found any EVIDENCE that PARSING exists using batch so I guess I just NEED a command that will return that alias.  Is it out there or any nifty work arounds?

I currently have a domain w/in a domain. The main domain is already running ACTIVE Directory and is pretty much the master of everything. The smaller domain is running NT4 and is used for "in-house" TESTING and stuff.

My problem is in the NT domain I have a W2K server that I want to promote to domain controller, I pretty much want to get rid of the old NT4 box. What I want to know is once the W2k Server is promoted to domain controller and I turn on Active Directory will it AUTOMATICALLY get assimalated into the main domain that is already running Active Directory?

I want to get rid of NT4 but I still want the segregation that I currently have between the two domains. I hope this MADE sense.cant your test your theroy? but taking away the the nt4?Are they completely seperate domains now?
As long as you keep the NT4 domain (once you upgrade it to the 2K domain) name different from the 2K domain they will remain seperate.

You might look into making them both members of the same forest in the future, if you want them to communicate, yet remain seperate. However, if you want to keep them totally seperated, they can co-exist in the same LAN with different domains. 2000 is actually fairly picky about who gets promoted to Domain Controller (by requiring Domain Admin rights for your user account) and wont assimilate without you specifying that you want them to be.Yes, both are on two different domains but they can still see each other through network neighborhood.

I just want to be sure when I promote my current W2K server to a DC that it still will be its own domain. I never ran AD so I have no idea what I'm in for. I am trying to find out the easyest way of running a batch file that will save a .XLT template into the template FOLDER, so I dont have to go round every machine and do it manually.  I want to mail the Batch file and the UPDATED template to the masses and ask them to run the batch file.  This will load the .XLT file into the correct foilder and allow the user to carry on with the day to day use of the file.  Can anyone help ??If all of these computers are on a local network, then the easiest thing to do would be to copy the template out to a network share.  Then create a logon script to copy the file from the share \\computername\share\filename.xlt to the local machine in the correct place.

Also, another thing that could be done is to create a batch file that will copy it from your machine to all the other MACHINES.  If they are all NT/2000/XP machines and you have admin access to each machine then you should be able to write a batch file that says:

copy c:\file.xlt \\machine\c$\program files\location

The problem with emailing out a batch file is that most of not all current email clients will not allow the RECIPIENTS to view and attached .bat file.  you would probably have to zip it or rename it and then have them unzip or rename the file before running it.  Without knowing more about your situation, its HARD to give you an exact answer.

I have Noscript on FF but disabling it makes no difference.
I disabled Avast, also no difference.
I disabled Spybot S&D, also no difference.
I have a router, no websites blocked on it.
I use Adblock and have sent them a report. But disabling made no difference.

I check connection speeds once in a while. I tried to use Speedtest, but when i tried installing Flash player (required to run Speedtest), I got the error message from Adobe "Unable to load metafile". Yet another problem. Then you certainly have connection issues...I searched for a solution to the Adobe "Unable to load metafile". I found another download link for it. Apparently it's a common issue.
But after installing flash player, the Speedtest did not work because I was required to INSTALL flash again, and got the same error message.
But the pingtest did, except for the packet loss section.

All of a sudden, "A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart".
It restarts but the same error COMES up.

I had no way of knowing you got the message at boot. When you ask for help on a support forum you need to provide as much information as possible in your initial post.

First, if you have a cd or dvd in the optical drive, remove it and reboot. Do you still get the same error? If so, go to the website of your hard drive manufacturer, download their diagnostic utility, burn it to disc, boot to it and run the diagnostic.Sorry I didn't give enough info.

I need some help. My brother asked me to do some work on his friend's computer. He's not computer savvy and wanted to get off the internet. It's an XP with the codes on the box but he doesn't have the disks because it was given to him by his daughter. I proceeded to remove a lot of junk that he had downloaded and ran some scans to make sure it was clean. My problem is that it will not hold the desktop picture and the screensaver will not work even though the preview works. The desktop picture STAYS for about 5 mins. after booting then it flashes a few TIMES and reverts to a blue screen. I figured I will just re-install the OS using my old XP Home Edition disk with SP1 which is the same as what he has on the computer. The only difference is that he has SP3 which I cannot uninstall. This is probably why I can't do a re-install. Any IDEAS how I can get around this problem. If I could fix the desktop and screensaver, I would just leave it as is.  If you go the Repair Install route...and then do the SP updates it should work...
And done properly all apps and data will be intact...

If you go the Repair Install route...and then do the SP updates it should work...

You could create a SP3 slipstream of XP Home + all updates pretty easily, so that upon install or repair install, its fully patched to the very last patch. The repair install off of this SP3 slipstream option is best if you have programs etc that you dont want to lose etc.

Otherwise for clean install, install XP Home SP1 and then perform service pack updates to SP3 for any picky programs that require XP SP2+ to function correctly.

I have Windows 98...
I am trying to play some videos from a CDR my friend gave me, the video will only play 3 seconds. Then my computer freezes up, but the CD Rom still spins the CDR around inside. Windows Media Player stops resonding and usually my computer freezes.  It continues spinning the CDR around, even if I close all programs. If I open the CDRom my computer gives me the blue screen that it can't recognize the CDR and crashes.  The CDR works fine on her computer but not mine...toby eder.....Do you have the proper drivers for the cd rom or is it a dvd player ?
Are you able to play a audio cd in the player ...without things CRASHING ? What format is the media that you are to play ?

Windows says I have the right drivers... The video is in .avi format.what version of windows media player are you using?have you tried windows movie maker...do you get the same results...i'm using Windows Media Player 9... My friend just told me that the CDRs are actually CDRW, could that be the reason why they are not playing? dl65Yes, it does make a difference. CDRW's can be very problematic when played on a different drive. CDR will normally work but CDRW will normally not work well if it works at all.2k dummy.......Interesting COMMENT ......I use cdrw often and use them to move info from one pc to the other and I have never had any PROBLEMS doing so ......but I suppose anything is possible ..

dl65  We have to 'finalize' any time we burn a CD or it likely won't work on a 98 machine.  Figured this out when we sent out 150 CDs to clients and about 10 didn't work.

i have a CLONED computer with no floppy drive only a cdrw. my windows 2000 professional nt got screwed up because someone told me that spyware was in my registry keys so i deleted them. so now nothing works on that os. i have since then installed windows xp home

I think you are CREATING problems that aren't there; An integrrated soundcard means it is installed on the MOTHERBOARD, you have to install your motherboard drivers on the Windows XP partition before you can use it's integrated periphals.

As for Fdisk, you can obtain a bootdisk at http://www.bootdisk.de. However, Windows XP has it's own bootdisk and can be used to Format other partitions and harddrives as well.

Is there any data on your hard drive that you want to retain?

Do you have a FULL version of XP Home on CD?

If it is an UPGRADE CD then do you have your 2000 CD?

I guess that you do as XP is installed and running.

If so, and providing that your system supports booting direct from the XP CD you need to know which key (or keys) to press to get into your BIOS and to change the boot sequence to boot directly from the CD-RW as first boot device so you can use the XP CD, which is bootable in itself. So you don't need a floppy drive.

You will need to change the boot sequence back again after completing the installation.

The XP CD has all the means of partitioning and formatting the hard drive built into it.

I use NoteTab Lite TEXT editor.  If I ASSOCIATE it with .reg files, "Merge" & "Edit with Registrar" are removed from the context menu.  Also, "Print", which I have tried to remove from all context menus, is added back on.

I want to edit/open reg files with a double click, and import them into the registry with "Merge" only

I want to remove "Print", as I mentioned, but having TROUBLE doing it with word/excel docs, .log, .html, .txt, etc

Tried to use the attached file (changed to .txt for attachment).  Thought it worked at first but no. 

If I can get this done, I would like to remove "Edit" from all context menus as well.

Last night, my computer was fine.
I fell asleep with it on, and WOKE up around 5 AM and shut it down. I started it back up a few hours LATER, and my icons were all lined up on the side of the screen. I tried moving them back, but when I do... It just puts the icons I tried to move in another's spot and sends one down to the BOTTOM of the line. If that makes sense. I can't get them to go anywhere but in the line they are already in down the side of the screen. I can move them around within that line... But yeah... nowhere else...

I'm so confused. Help?Heather C......TRY this......right click on a open area on your desktop......choose "arrange icons by" ..........then put a tick in front of ...."Align to grid"   .......now you should be able to move your icons around as you wish......

Keep about 50 gb for the operating system and the rest for saving your important documents and files. By doing that, if you ever have to do a repair or re-install, your important documents and files are still secure.

I'm fairly ignorant to how COMPUTERS work. My computer is about 10 years old, it's a Dell, was $1,100 at that time, it's a desktop. I use "Broadstripe" cable/internet company (Not my choice, live with my mom) Not sure of the internet speed she purchased. (Probably the cheapest knowing her). I did purchase a SOMEWHAT expensive router. It's a "N600 wireless dual band router" (Model WNDR3400v2). I'm using a USB wireless netgear connector. The signal strength is very good to excellent. But the speed is very slow. Between 1 mbps to 54 mbps (during a good minute). And the internet connection goes out frequently. About 5 times since I Started this question. Does anybody KNOW whats wrong or if there is any thing I can do to help speed up the computer? Changing cable/internet company is out of the question as it is not my house. Would a different type of wireless connector help? What about a Ad Hoc connection? My son has a wireless ready laptop that runs just fine on the internet as well as all the other wireless ready laptops in the house. My desktop is about about 30 feet from the router. Any help is appreciated. From a quick look at you post, I THINK you are not using the right driver for the USB adapter. Also, XP has to be up to date to work with wireless.
Does the computer have an Ethernet card?
Can you possibly get an Ethernet cable and run it directly from the tourer to you old XP computer? If you can do that, you will have to do the Internet Wizard again so that it includes the Ethernet card in the network.

Older versions of XP that are not up to date only work with Ethernet. Unless you disable wireless security. Which is a bad idea. Windows XP has a hard time with wireless security.

However, I am not sure that would fix lour problem. Sometimes you have to do the XP Network wizard three times before it COMES out right.

A few weeks ago I could rotate my display in XP. Just using the arrows with ctrl+alt would made the display shift 90 or 180 DEGREES. But it stopped working.

BTW, in Windows  7 it works as advertised. CTRL+Right arrow turns  90 degrees  to the Right.

Not the issue...it was working prior to now.

Windows Updates often include unnecessary driver updates for some reason, an update to the Graphics Driver could cause this.

I dusted off an old Windows XP laptop despite its no longer being supported and tried to update the Google CHROME Browser, which would fail each time it tried to update automatically. I have tried their alternate installer unsuccessfully and have also tried older versions of Chrome, which Filehippo offers, to no avail. I do have other browsers which I can use, but my PREFERENCE is Chrome. Any ideas?You COULD try a System Restore if there are any Restore points before you uninstalled it.Thanks SuperDave. This evening I added a new programme to my WIFE's computer.  I had to turn off then turn back on and it is asking for my Microsoft Key numbers.  The problem is I do not have them.  The computer was set up in a local shop who are no longer operational.  It is an older type programme ie XP.  The computer is totally legal and has always worked completely ok, but there does not seem to be any way of getting in to the system without the Microsoft prompt that KEEPS coming up.

Can anyone please help to suggest how I can get round this.  My wife is making my life *censored* and as quickly as POSSIBLE please before she kills me

IanI'd suggest you contact Microsoft directly. Alternatively, if you have backup IMAGES you can restore to a prior date.Not sure what App would ask/prompt you for your Win key...SOUNDS a bit Phishy to me....

What I have read on this is not very good.
It APPEARS that the number if updates is just short of infinity.

Hello, whenever i CLICK on the add or remove programs on the LEFT side of a window under system tasks and then i click on Add/Remove Windows Components, a window comes up saying "Another copy of this setup program is running. please wait until the other setup is completed before attempting to run this program again" Except i DONT have anything else running and i'm sure of that. I could access it before but now i can't. My O/S is Windows XP Service Pack 2. Anything to do with that maybe? Help please.JKO.....Try this ....click control panel / then select add/remove programs / list should appear then choose the one to remove and click "remove"

dl65  which program are you trying to add/remove?Wait wait wait. I'm not talking about the REMOVE/ADD PROGRAMS thing, i'm talking about the ADD/REMOVE WINDOWS COMPONENTS where u can delete or add things that came with windows when u installed it. i cant even get into it anymore. a message comes up sayin dat another setup like dat is already running, but theres nuthin running.JKO.....exactly what is it your trying to remove ?

dl65  i'm not TRYIN to get rid of any program in particular, its just that i can't get into the part where i can get rid of the program, the Add/Remove Windows Components Wizard. The one where it says "Please Wait" when u enter it and again where u exit it. i might take out Windows messenger, but i dont want to take it out any other way.JKO......If you go into control panel and look over on the left side ,you will see add/remove windows components.
single left click on it and a window will open and you can view windows components available to be removed.....
If you happen to double click on the link you will open two wizard windows ........just single click and it will work fine

dl65  I think the quest is trying to point out that he/she cannot open the entire add/remove Windows Menu menu at all.Raptor.....Hi ..I read it that when he clicked on add/remove window components he got the message that there was another copy of the program running.....in XP2 if you double click there thats what happens........( at least it does on both my machines)
I guess we'll have to wait for him / her to clarify .

dl65  Quite a few people make the mistake of double clicking where they only have to click once.Like ME!! My scroll WHEEL is set for double clicking. I tend to forget and click on that one, instead of the left click. You just have to be carefull, but, we all forget sometimes.   My Bad, at times!

PS: I can't spell either.Oh, i didnt double click, just once. and there were no other things running.Does it still happen? What if you install additional components from the Windows CD?Yea, i put in the XP cd and when i click on the Add Additional Components or somethin like dat, da window still appears sayin that there is already another window of this setup open. but if that is so, then the other setup window would have been up already if i double clicked, which it isnt.

     I've been trying to download some music off a reputable free music site. It downloads it ok but as html document, not mp3. They won't play.
     Is there a way to change it from html to mp3? Some1 help me out. It's driving me crazy. I'm on an ASUS netbook, Windows XP.
     I have tried going on different sites but everytime it'll download it but not in the form i want it in. I'd b GRATEFUL 4 any help offered me.

Nita If the music was free download and reputable, then they should be offering them as MP3 downloads. If your ending up with HTML files you must be right-clicking to try to save the music, but the music is not really for download but instead its there for online play only and your simply downloading the links that are in html format.

What music site btw?All your doin is SAVING the links to the MP3's...
Thats why they don't run.You either right click on the specific music file you're interested in and chose: save file as or CHECK if there is perhaps another download button to get mp3. Whatever you do do not go into browser preferences and just save site as - this will create htm instead of mp3.I've encountered QUITE a few sites that have free music (video too) for streaming on-line only.  Legally, they can allow you to listen to the music but can't distribute it so it's not available to download and save on your computer.

I'll use Netflix as an example.  They have licensed many movies and when you subscribe to their service you can watch movies on-line from their website but there is no ability to save a movie to your computer since their licensing prohibits that.

When I log into my user, the screen shows just the blank background... No icons or task bar. Nothing. I have tried explorer.exe but that doesn't help and now no INTERNET connection related stuff works either. And NOW task MANAGER and any programs i DO manage to open stop responding and cannot be ended because task manager is the thing not responding...
