Solve : Windows XP Home Startup Problem? |
Answer» I have Windows XP Home Edition on a computer, without the CD (didn't come with one) It relies on Windows System Restore stored on a partition of the harddrive. I made a copy from another XP disk, but when I try to repair it or reinstall it, a blue screen comes up with an error in the registry...There was a problem with hal.dll in the system32 file, but I replaced it. Something is still wrong, and it let me logon to the MiniNT portion of the CD which lets me view the contents of the Harddrive...but I'm at a loss from here. I cannot repair, restore or reinstall windows, I need some SERIOUS help.first you say this>I have Windows XP Home Edition on a computer, without the CD (didn't come with one then you say this >, but I replaced it.....what with? you need the proper cdinstall disk...or do you have a ebd floppy disk...can you obtain safe mode....you may have to edit the boot init file..>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/Q289/0/22.asp&NoWebContent=1I can't get into safemode, it won't even let me log into the Windows on my HD. The drive that I logged onto is the HP_RECOVERY, but I've scanned around on that drive, and can't find how to boot from the drive or how to recover. I don't have a boot floppy either.jake> you will have to excuse the last post..it seems you learn something new every day...hp have a different way to restore their systems>http://www.windowsreinstall.com/install/oem/hppavilion/hp_pavilion_xppc.htm and good luck...i would make a emergency boot disk and keep it safe you never noOkay, now I'm more confused then before. There is no menu that pops up, I can only access the recovery drive if I go through the WinXP install CD and use the repair option and logon to the recovery drive (it has windows NT) When I do this, though, I can only do a few things as it is not full DOS and will not run applications, only expand and change a few things. I'm fully lost now.Cross that last post, I have good news. I've figured the bad boy out, now maybe I can get it running. Wish me luck...hopefully I won't delete all of the files on it. go for jake what the *censored*...if you have FUN with hal...you can also do this ...if need to edit the boot ini file |

Answer» I was not sure if I should put this in browsers, but since I'm on an XP thought I would go that route....
I attached the log, wasn't sure if you wanted me to post it all just here.... Solve : time and date issues? |
Answer» The time and date clock has been ACTING up LATELY in Windows XP home edition. It has been speeding up considerably. It can gain as much as 6 or more hours over the course of a day. Then it will go back to NORMAL for a while after I reset it, before it takes off again. Could this be some type of virus or just a low battery on the motherboard? I am running a current updated Norton Antivirus software. Is there something I can check for? |

Solve : new problems follow mb change? |
Answer» Hello, Let me tell you something...I grew up a scientist, did cancer research, and then spent 10 years in the computer field (1979-88). I have always been a hard-headed rational, logical person. Since I've been in computers however, I've come to believe more and more in magic. Could not have stated it better myself... Was it supposed to be a new MBoard replacement ? ?...they may have sent a refurbished one instead. At any rate part of the issue has been swapping different HDD's in and out that have an OS installed to them...it' doesn't always work that way. If you continue to have issues i wouldn't hesitate to contact ASUS and make a little noise... BTW is the same PSU in play thru this whole dilemna ? ?Ha ha...glad that you agree! It was a used mb that I subbed in for the old one. Of course I was assured that the board had no problems, but a board this old is suspect anyway. I don't know what I could say to ASUS since it was a used board. What mystified me was the fact that the first C drive refused to boot (operating system not found) and then the next day, it worked fine. Nothing was done to it. Yes it is the same PSU...750 watts, more than enough for this rig and only 2-3 years old. What BRAND ? ? "Operating System Not Found" or "Missing operating system" error message when you start your Windows XP-based computerCorsair TXW 750 watt PSU I'm still getting the four beep error every time I boot, but if I just hit F1, it boots up fine.1 long and 3 short ? ? Or 2 long and 2 short ? ? Listen to the beeps next time and post back with the results...how they sound makes a difference as to what it is...and there is no plain 4 beep code on that particular MBoard.four short beeps...none are long. I looked it up on this site and it said System Timer Failure.I didn't see that at all on the site...but if that's the error message replace the CMOS battery...Part # CR2032,,,available anywhere,,, Make sure all power is removed when doing so...you may have to re-set the system time settings in the BIOS afterwards. That's exactly what I did after I swapped in the new (used) mb and the clock was wrong. I used the battery from the old mb and the clock is working fine. But it was right after I put in the battery that this error code appeared.Update: Today when I booted up, the screen stuck on the Windows XP screen with the blue moving bar, so I rebooted. The second time I got a black and white MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION screen warning me about newly installed hardware. There is no newly installed hardware. The third time I rebooted it came up normally. I'm thinking that it's time to reinstall Windows. Anyone agree?Does anyone disagree? |

Solve : Windows, I think? |

Answer» I really don't know what to do here. Whenever I START up my computer, everything seems to be working except that the taskbar does not show up. I can press "cntrl alt delete" and the task manager will pop up, and can even "start new task" to bring up command prompt or msconfig, but playing around with it I can't seem to get the taskbar or any icons working. Basically, the whole desktop is just blank, besides my background and mouse pointer. Any ideas? I'm clueless on the subject. Solve : How to boot XP from a SATA disk with an IDE adapter?? |
Answer» I have XP SP3 and my system disk was giving trouble, so I cloned it to a new disk (using Casper) and REPLACED the old disk with the new one. The computer only has IDE, not SATA; but I didn't anticipate a problem when I bought a SATA disk with an IDE adapter as the new disk — it was advertised as just the thing for replacing a faulty IDE disk in an oldish machine. But the machine won't boot from the new disk; with only that disk available, it won't boot at all. When booted from another medium, the new disk is perfectly usable. But I need to be able to boot from it. Is there a way to do this? Thanks for any ideas. (I've always found clones made with Casper to be bootable; I've made clones to IDE disks before and booted from them. The difference this time is that it's a SATA disk in an IDE adapter.)Did they tell you the adapter was compatible at the BIOS level? What actually happens is strange. With only this new disk attached, Windows begins to load, but on reaching the point when you would expect the invite to login, no such invite appears but the process stops and the machine has to be switched off. Based on the fact that the OS loads, but does not fully initialize, I'd say that it did not properly "ghost" the original disk. Since your computer will begin the boot sequence from that HDD, then it doesn't seem like an issue with detecting the drive (though there could be some issue like that since it is an older machine), but rather that the OS is broken. Personally I've never used Casper for ghosting, just Paragon. However there are some good tools included for free in Hiren's BCD which you could try. Try ghosting the original disk using another software such as the above listed. You could also try running a repair via the XP disk, but that also may not solve the problem... OH! And did you try booting to safe-mode? There's my $0.02! - kyle_engineerThis is just an interim update. Those of you who suspected that the cloning wasn't 100% successful may be proved right. The people at Casper are looking into it at present anyway. On a couple of other points raised: • my old IDE system disk was 250GB, so it's not the "LBA thing" • trying to boot in safe mode hangs in the same way • the vendor of the IDE adapter suggested the XP repair disk too, but I can't verify this as I never had such a disk, or an XP CD either • a new motherboard would be too complicated for me, plus it wouldn't outlive the machine Thanks again, all responses are appreciated.Well, I repeated the cloning operation, and this time it worked! That is, the target disk is bootable. There were differences in the circumstances, however. In the first attempt to clone, when the target disk was left unbootable, the target disk had been completely unused prior to the cloning operation. This would be a common enough circumstance. In the second attempt, the target disk was already formatted and contained data, as a result of the first attempt. Also, in the first attempt, the source disk was primary master, and the target disk, via the SATA-to-IDE adapter, was in the secondary IDE slot. In the second attempt, the source disk was secondary master, and the target disk, via the SATA-to-IDE adapter, was in the primary IDE slot. Both times, of course, the source disk was functioning as system disk. I don't feel this difference was significant. Both attempts had in common that the target disk was attached via the SATA-to-IDE adapter. In this, they differed from all my previous uses of Casper, which used IDE disks as both source and target. Casper actually gave a warning, during the first attempt, that it "could not write to backup boot record" on the target disk, but this message was hidden in the (HTML) report of the operation, and only visible on examining the source of the report. The Casper people also pointed out to me a number of errors in the machine's system log, but I am unconvinced that these had any bearing on the failure of the program to write the boot record first time. Since the same combination of circumstances is unlikely to arise again, I suppose we will never know for sure whether the problem would recur, or whether it was a one-off. At all events, everything is WORKING now, and it has been proven that using a disk through a SATA-to-IDE adapter does not prevent that disk from functioning as the system disk. giomach, thank your for sharing this. Glad to hear that you got it to work. So, one might reason, the solution is 'Try, try again.' The Casper the OP referees to is a product of Future Systems Solutions. They coffer a free version of the disk clone software. http://www.fssdev.com/products/casper/trial/ PS. It is not uncommon for a drive clone to fail the first time.It was never the adapter...it was the cloning app and restore process... Very common with any imaging app unfortunately. Quote from: patio on February 26, 2014, 03:54:28 PM It was never the adapter...it was the cloning app and restore process...You are right, Patio It might be said this could happen with other clone software. It does...with all of them. Quote from: patio on February 26, 2014, 03:54:28 PM It was never the adapter...it was the cloning app and restore process... Even Macrium Reflect? Solve : creating and exporting a text file of account names? |
Answer» Is there a way to CREATE a TEXT file of the accounts on an XP machine? We are doing a hard drive retention for the legal department and ONE of the steps is to PUT the accounts from a hard drive into a spreadsheet. It is one drive to a line, the accounts into one cell in that line, number of accounts can range from 1 to almost 200 depending on the use of the computer. Having to type all of those accounts is REALLY annoying and time consuming, so ANYTHING at all that makes the process easier is very much appreciated. |

Solve : BIOS Security tab missing !!? |
Answer» HI All, I'm still running Windows XP but plan on changing to Windows 8.1 It appears that to do so my PC must have NX capability. Currently that is not the case but I've been told that the NX capability may well be there but it hasn't been enabled and that this can be DONE by accessing the security tab in the BIOS. Well, I can't find a security tab in the BIOS !! What am I missing? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Art Windows 8.1 requires PAE, NX, as well as SSE2. Essentially you'd need a Pentium 4 or Later or an equivalent AMD chip (Athlon 64, I believe) or later. If you can provide any details about your System it could be helpful. It may be that your System would not gain much from a Windows 8.1 upgrade. Thanks for your reply. I think you are right. My system has Pentium Dual core processor E5200 252GHz. Looks like a change is due. Regards Art Quote from: Artpayne on March 23, 2014, 08:28:10 PM Thanks for your reply. The Dual Core is quite a bit newer than the Pentium 4 and supports all those requirements. How are you determining that No-Execute is not supported currently? Some information that may help: System requirements - Windows 8.1 Quote If you want to RUN Windows 8 on your PC, here's what it takes: Again, thanks for your help. I ran the "coreinfo" program and it indicated that NX was not enabled. Apparently it sometimes exists but has not been enabled and this can be checked by accessing the Security tab in the BIOS. This was my original query - that no Security tab shows up in the BIOS. If, as you SAY, my processor is later than Pentium 4 then presumably I should be able to install Windows 8 but it appears I can only establish this by getting into the Security section of the BIOS. Do you have any suggestions? Regards Art Quote from: Artpayne on March 24, 2014, 04:33:29 AM Apparently it sometimes exists but has not been enabled and this can be checked by accessing the Security tab in the BIOS. This was my original query - that no Security tab shows up in the BIOS.BIOS screens differ, so it was foolish of them to give you instructions that were so specific. You will have to look through the various BIOS screens available and look for an option such as "No-Execute Memory Protect" or "Execute-disable bit capability", or "Execute disable" etc. |

Solve : Fate of XP? |
Answer» Just curious about the latest thinking. I know some here think XP will be largely unaffected by MS's imminent cessation of support while others predict major security issues. Because I do not have nearly enough knowledge to form an independent conclusion, I took the safe way out and upgraded to Win7. I am so happy I did but still wonder and am very interested to see what, if anything, will happen to those individual XP users who do not buy support from MS. They will just open themselves up to glaring security holes - XP already gets attacked 6 times more than Windows 7 (1), this number will only go up once XP stops getting patched. Windows Vista, 7 and 8 still share large amounts of code with XP so updates to Windows that patch these old bits of code may expose weakness that lie in XP ready to be EXPLOITED. I wouldn't say that MS are retiring XP to sell more software - They are retiring it as it's costing time and money to release updates and patches for an ancient OS. It's exactly the same as websites dropping support for older browsers, why go out of your way to support something ancient? Are these not part of t the same end goal? Sell more. Reduce costs. What I meant was that MS has found a business model that works. At least for now. But the mobile market r so split into different sectors, if is not feasible to become number one in a short term. In a FIGURATIVE sense. XP does live on as part of the foundation for the success of Microsoft. BTW: Embedded Windows XP still is alive. Here is a recent news blip . TAKE a took. Quote Less than 40% of U.S.'s 425,000 ATM systems will have migrated off Windows XPhttp://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9247072/Most_ATMs_will_remain_on_Windows_XP_after_Microsoft_pulls_plug_on_OS_support_ Arte they going to Windows 7 soon? No way! Read the story carefully. Quote from: SuperDave on March 21, 2014, 12:32:10 PM XP is getting hit 6 times more than any other OS. Could this be because more people are using XP than the other OS's? Where did you get that from? Everywhere I can find says that Windows 7 significantly more popular than XP. Patio - That report was from Avast, The PCWorld report on it just happened to be the first link I found. Quote these infections are getting in regardless of how many security patches are installed. But surely once XP stops getting patched, this will leave open a lot more holes to be exploited. Then eventually once support is dropped, companies will stop releasing software for XP meaning people will start using old versions of things like their web browser - This will then cause even more security vulnerabilities. In the end, it's the user's fault that they are too stubborn to move to something newer, they can blame Microsoft all they want but it's hardly Microsoft being horrible by stopping support for something that is completely uneconomical for them to continue supporting. I don't understand why people are so religious about running XP, I mean, it's almost like they see it as 'cool' to use an old OS. If people have such a problem with a company deciding the fate of the software they are using, then they shouldn't be using commercial software.Just wanted to state that XP will still be good for Offline or Private LAN use where there is isolation from the internet but it can still serve a purpose. I own 6 copies of XP ( 2 x Home and 4 x Professional ) and have no plans to throw the towel in on them for use Offline or Private LAN communications where these are still usefull. In past years I continued to run prior versions of Windows Desktop and Server OS beyond the supported life placed on them by Microsoft. Windows 2000 Pro SP4 I used for many years beyond security support for Offline or Private Lan use mainly with Pentium 166Mhz & 200Mhz MMX and Pentium II based CPU systems that were not ready to be thrown into a landfill, and it didnt make much sense to install XP to with just 192MB RAM etc, yet Windows 2000 Pro SP4 with 128MB RAM or more worked well for the needed purpose at the time vs spending money. However Linux made vast improvements in hardware and software support and so I was able to do away with some that I was using as file servers etc and replace the older Windows OS without further security updates with Linux which was free and had security updates available. Since there are still some applications where XP will be needed vs Linux Offline or Private LAN, I will continue to use my licensed copies of them for years to come as I did in the past with the other OS's that phased out. I think one thing that people should consider is to try out a Linux Desktop OS which is free such as MINT, Fedora, or Ubuntu, etc if they have an older system that isnt worth putting money into and they dont want to spend money but still want to be secure from security problems. One example of a system I have that is older and works well with Linux is a 2002 model eMachine that is running a Pentium 4 2.0Ghz with 1GB of RAM. I am running Linux MINT 16 ( 32-bit ) on this system and it runs well and it is secure. I use this system for surfing the web on one display while I am doing something else on the other through a KVM to share keyboard/mouse, but each system has its video connection direct to monitor. *Some may say why dont you just use a single system with dual video displays, but the reason for this is because some older games I have have issues with dual display mode systems, and also I like being able to switch between Linux MINT 16 32-bit and Windows 7 64-bit on the fly with the KVM. So anyone who isnt ready to send their older computer to the landfill should consider burning a DVD of Linux and installing it to an older machine if they want to stretch the secure life of the computer further without spending money. *The only users this wouldnt work out for is gamers since Linux can be tricky getting games to run and some will not run on it. But if you are a gamer then you will want up to date hardware anyways. And if you like playing older games, chances are they can be played offline and so this XP system can be retained as a system to play the older games etc and with a KVM you can switch between this older Offline system running XP and your newer system with Windows 7 or 8 / 8.1. Lastly it is beneficial to retain that older system if you have older 16-bit software or programs that you dont want to stop using because 64-bit versions of Windows have no 16-bit support. The 32-bit versions of Windows support the 16-bit software or programs, but you would not want to buy into a modern 32-bit OS and then be locked down to a maximum of 4GB of system RAM to use for the OS. So because I have lots of older games that some work ok with DOS Box etc and others dont, its best to play them on the older hardware offline when there is that need to play a 16-bit version of Tetris etc without buying a newer version. Although this is probably a weak example since there is probably a free to play web based version of Tetris out there with a different name to avoid legal issues.DaveLembke, Thank you. Point well made. So are we talking about Question A.) What will Microsoft do with Windows XP? OR Question B.) What will computer users do with Windows XP? Answer A. MS will do nothing, other than enforce their copyrights. Answer B. Users will either buy new software or freeze in the universal cooling of computer software from heat seeking malware.camerongray; Allyou have to do is look up how many XP PC's are still in service... As far as Win7 goes you can't compare sales #'s to the # of machines running XP... Quote from: patio on March 21, 2014, 03:51:13 PM camerongray; I'm not looking at sales, I'm looking at statistics from OSs used to visit websites, while this isn't completely accurate it's a pretty good prediction: http://www.netmarketshare.com/operating-system-market-share.aspx?qprid=10&qpcustomd=0. I can't find anything recent that states that it is still the most popular. That said, it's pretty worrying that so many people are still using it. Quote Everywhere I can find says that Windows 7 significantly more popular than XP.It may be leading in popularity but not in usage. Quote this will leave open a lot more holes to be exploited. If they're not finding holes now how will they find them in the future? It's not like XP will still be undergoing changes. Quote This will then cause even more security vulnerabilities. Most of the infections I'm finding since over a year are not getting in through security vulnerabilities. It's been quite a while since I've found any viruses. The third-party security companies are not leaving XP. Security software ... for XP machine. UISA Today Quote ... |

Solve : files with no extension tied to wmplayer.exe? |
Answer» Inadvertantly, files with no extension are now set to automatically and always open with wmplayer.exe. How can this be reset to automatically go to the "Open With" window of choices? I'm running WindowsME.just reclick the open with box to power dvd notepad or what program you are trying to use..and it it just wav files..more info...or go to wmp tools/format and untick the boxes you do not want wmp to open.?..Merlin_2...thanks for the response. I can get to the "Open With" window and can select another program without any problem. What I want to do is fix the setting. I can't find it anywhere and thus cannot reset it back to "nothing" instead of wmplayer.exe.you could try this for example in my documents folder/tools/folder options/file types tab...options are available i think you may find it hard to have nothing...if you right CLICK on the file....open with box appears and choices..if you dont want wmp to do this chose another progam..Yes, that function works fine. Of course, there is no "file type" that = "nothing" to enable a permanent automatic change. I've been into the registry looking for an "OpenWithList" folder for files without an extension but can't find one. I do find a "." file but the programs listed are not wmplayer.exe. Do you have a clue where Windows ME has hidden this link? There's a setting for that in XTeq XSetup (actually a registry setting, XSetup is a handy registry hack tool) to (re)assign 'extensionless' files to 'Open with' dialogue. As Calrissian said "This deal is getting worse all the time." MalikTous - Thanks for the info. So the drill you are suggesting is to go download this "XSetup Pro" and somehow figure out how to get it to find the link between extensionless files and wmplayer.exe in my registry(?) |

Have your XP disk and application disks ready, and back up your DATA completely before starting. That way, even if XP SP2 hangs on restart, you'll lose no more than time as you wipe your drive and reinstall XP with SP1 clean, then your A/V and firewall, then install SP2, then all your apps and data... If it works, you just got PROMPTED to make a DECENT backup, so you benefit anyway. |

Solve : SSL connection does not work on Windows XP? |
Answer» http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314864It WORKS on my XP PC.I have gotten SSL error several times a day for the past week. I have talked the local pohoine company and the ISP and they claim to have fixed my DLS issues. But I keep getting SSL errors and the modem does a hard reset. I am waiting for MS to send me the PATCH. I have not been able to get it yet, because the SSL error stops my mail client from working. The kb ARTICLE only applies when the server is a self-signed certificate, and you are using Internet Explorer. Do these "SSL Errors" have text? maybe descriptions? Error Codes? Also check your system clock - If it has for some reason jumped far into the future on back into the past you will find the machine treating SSL certificates as though they have expired. This is especially true at the moment with the Heartbleed issue as servers are having their SSL keys replaced to ones that would have only first become valid within this week. The issue here Geek is you are having issues with SSL errors...then you post something saying SSL doesn't WORK in XP... Because you have issues does not mean all XP PC's have issues.Thank you for your replies. I am now using Chrome instead of Firefox and have yet to see the error again. I will post back if I get a screen shot of the error. What makes it hard to understand is that I get a modem reset along with the SSL error. Hard to KNOW if they are related. |

Solve : WRITE PROTECTED MEMORY STICK? |
Answer» I have been using a memory STICK for a while to COPY files for offsite storage. Yesterday for whatever reason the stick became write protected which took me by surprise to say the least....I can't seem to locate a procedure to change it back to allowing writes to it. I am logging as a member of Windows wont just do that on it's own...who else had access to it ? ? Windows and other operating systems can mark a drive as read-only if errors are detected. This could be because a drive has become defective - the flash memory or memory controller chips, or even a faulty contact on the USB connector or an internal problem. if the data is valuable, copy it all off the drive to somewhere else. You could try formatting it, if it now becomes read-write then maybe you could use it again, but they are so cheap now why bother? I would never trust it again. Throw it away. |

Solve : Windows OS loading trouble? |
Answer» Hey everyone,, i came across a problem i have never seen before,, hopefully you can help. Use fdisk to del partiontion and then recreate it and format from dos not from windows xp? You can more easily use the Windows XP CD-ROM as a bootdisk to format, remove and creation partitions.I did remove and then create the partition. It will create the partition then do a quick format then it will reboot,, the blue screen comes up with the mouse arrow then just hangs there..You are using Bootmagic, yes? Where I study they have bootmagic installed and as soon as you move the mouse it crashes. What if you disconnect the mouse? No I am not using Bootmagic,, I am using a full version of Windows XP Home and im booting off of that disc.Nevermind - That must have been another Rick. Are you using a legal copy of Windows XP? Did you completely format the HDD and then try to install Windows XP again?read more>http://whitepapers.zdnet.co.uk/0,39025945,60083008p-39000645q,00.htm and there is this >http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxphome/installxpcdnewhdd/indexemu.htmI legally own three OEM versions of XP and i have installed them over and over again and never had this problem before,, I looked at that emulation program and i really dont know how it helps unless its on the system im trying to use,, running a simulation on an already working system seems futile to me,, ive taken it to a computer guy and he is working on it,, if i get it fixed i will let you all know what it was,,that emulation website explained how to do a parallel install?to solve your problem...or maybe i should have posted this site instead>http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmHey, i came across a problem similar, yet different. I have put a new hard drive in a hewlett packard thinking the other 1 was dead. When i partition and format it it goes okay. When it copies setup files it goes slow, and then when it installs windows it kind of hangs between 37 minutes and 32 minutes. It takes a LONG time on 37 to get down to 36 minutes. Any ideas whats causing it to hang on installing? I'm installing WINXP prof. Also once the OS is on the computer it doesnt boot up quickly and everything is sluggish. Do i need a new battery, or just to clear the cmos? If so, how do i clear the cmos? How to replace the CMOS battery Did you format the HDD before installing files on it?OK i figured it out,, heres the answer the Asus Motherboard specs indicated that the video card i was using,, ( ATI Radeon 9600 XT 8X 256Mb DDR video card ) was wrong in regard to the mobo. It is an 8 X agp card and the mobo APPARENTLY is set up for a 4 x agp card,, This is something i didnt know,, so now i know to always check my mobo for the CORRECT card,, So now i have a brand new card to sell, if anyone is interested,, lemme know,, im going to put it on ebay for auction,,yes i formatted the hard drive. I just installed a 160gb hd on another computer HP, no problem. windoes xp automatically formats the hard drive and partitions too. |

Answer» Anyone hear any reports about bad things happening with XP? I am glad I invested in my Win 7 upgrade, but clearly I was unduly concerned about XP security problems, especially those that would happen soon after 4/8. Quote from: artbuc on May 04, 2014, 02:02:30 AM Anyone hear any reports about bad things happening with XP? I am glad I invested in my Win 7 upgrade, but clearly I was unduly concerned about XP security problems, especially those that would happen soon after 4/8. The doomsaying was exaggerative. While it's true (as I've said) that the dropping of support means free exploits for every round of patches for Vista/7/8, The REALITY is more that those exploits aren't needed. The most useful are privilege escalation exploits and the fact is that those are redundant on XP since XP runs everything with full permissions. So while MS provides free exploits with every patch to Vista and 7 it's possible that malware authors simply don't need it- at this stage XP was already an open book when it came to trojans which are the most common entry wound. All my own XP PC's have been running with Updates turned OFF for over two years. I got tired of the funky updates disabling my PC's. After turning off the MS Updates, I've had NO MORE problems with Windows XP. It just runs great, day after day, without ever a whimper. I DO keep all my Security SOFTWARE up to date at least weekly. AVG runs a DAILY update and scan. |

Solve : re: changing the xp log off background screen? |
Answer» I just about have my PROJECT done. All I need to do is change the look of only the log off background screen. Everything else is done. Boot and log on screen are set and running fine. I have been hunting on the internet for instructions for changing only the log off background screen and so far I have found many instructions for changing boot and log on screens with only a vague reference to changing the log off background screen. But no hard and fast instructions. It would be much appreciated if someone could point me to a set of instructions for Xp. 98SE was easy to change the log off screen without effecting the log on screen. If you just want to get rid of it and see what's going on behind it, this time add a "/sos" switch to the applicable line in boot.ini. Going to have to try this out on an old laptop when I get home that is running XP to see what is displayed. Quote I just about have my project done. All I need to do is change the look of only the log off background screen. Everything else is done. Boot and log on screen are set and running fine. This is hard to understand. What kind of project? What is the log off background supposed to be? How is it part of the project? Anyway, changeling g the registry should not be ever a part of a regular program that does something useful. Unless changing the registry was the objective. The project is to put an operational LCARS shell on top of the XP desktop. The shell is in place and running. But the shell has no meens built into the shell installer to change the look of the startup boot, logon window and logoff window. Startup boot/logon is complete and runs fine, complete with sounds. Logoff sound is in place and working. I need to change the logoff background. I have the logoff bmp picture ready. Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 19, 2014, 05:26:02 PM This is hard to understand. What kind of project? What is the log off background supposed to be? How is it part of the project? Now I see. The keyword is: kiosk For years companies have used off-the-shelf- OS to run a stand-alone system for retails POS and travel guides and that kind of thing. Yeah, it looks tacky when p[people see the windows logo at start and end of a session. One workaround is to leave the system on all the time and use hibernation mode. Or, you can contact whoever sold you the kiosk. Or did you do the whole design yourself? I do NOT work for these people. Here is a phone # Call at 1-888-569-5467 Be coy and maybe they will tell you if it is easy or noit. Where did he mention "kiosk" ? ? Quote from: patio on April 20, 2014, 09:48:16 AM Where did he mention "kiosk" ? ?He did't. But that word leads to what he wants. Why else would he want to hide the logo off screen? I'm befuddled honestly...OP, please look at this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interactive_kiosk Is this the kind of thing the project will do? Quote An interactive kiosk is a computer terminal featuring specialized hardware and software designed within a public exhibit that provides access to information and applications for communication, commerce, entertainment, and education. A kiosk is way far off the subject. This lcars shell on this laptop is just 1 part of a large Star Trek bridge display that my club is putting together for the next local Star Trek convention. Once this laptop is completed and working right. I will be duplicating this setup on the other laptops for the other bridge computer stations. With a few minor changes for like the communications and engineering stations and so on. It won't be 100% looking like the bridge set that was used in the tng tv prog's and movies. But this is the best we can do with funds and materials available. My part of this deal is the computers and electrical wiring because I have an AA degree in electronics, 2 way radio, tv and vcr repair. And there is a prize for the best looking display. We have 2 carpenters in the group that are over seeing the construction of the set. That is in a nut shell the overall picture. Steve A ps the lcars shell prog i am using I found online along with the sounds to replace XP's normal sounds. The boot up, logon background screen and the logoff screen I made up by copy and past of pictures I found on the internet. This link is an early look of the logon screen https://www.dropbox.com/s/wifvkf7pplkrl5g/sf%20logon%20logo.bmp It is now complete and working. Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 20, 2014, 11:08:59 AM OP, please look at this:Did you try wizmo? https://www.grc.com/wizmo/wizmo.htm Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 20, 2014, 05:02:07 PM Did you try wizmo? That has absolutely nothing to do with what they are dealing with.BC_Programmer, What is he trying to do? Do have the answer? Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 20, 2014, 07:33:27 PM BC_Programmer, What he wants is pretty clear based on his posts. They are customizing the Windows UI to appear like the terminals that are found in Star Trek TNG/Voyager/DS9. I'd almost understand the confusion since they didn't SPECIFY the Star Trek connection, but in the first Post they do mention LCARS and a Google of the same would given any curious onlooker plenty of information to understand what they wanted to do. As to whether I have the answer, I do not know how he can change the logoff background screen. However based on the fact that the linked program does not provide that capability I'm quite certain that it will not serve that purpose. It is not easy to change the shutdowns screen. I read somewhere there is a registry key for that. But I have never tried it . http://support.microsoft.com/kb/291559 How to change the logon window and the shutdown preferences in Windows XP I don't see how the above works. |

Answer» Hi 0x0000007b (0xf7a9263c,0x0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000Here's what that error means. Did you do something to it before it stopped booting? The filename, directory name,or volume label syntax is incorrect Quote from: SuperDave on May 03, 2014, 11:37:09 AM Here's what that error means. Did you do something to it before it stopped booting? BSOD's display bugcheck codes, not standard Windows Error Codes. So while 0x7b indicates ERROR_INVALID_NAME as a Windows Error Code, for the BSOD the code is a BugCheck code and indicates INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE. This makes SENSE. Windows XP cannot be booted from an external Optical Drive because it will reinitialize the USB Host Bus while starting and lose access to it, as I recall. It would probably be useful to know what the error messages from the failed, normal boot up are though, rather than simply the BSOD trying to boot from the disc."error missing file message"'s usually indicate the file that is missing. |
