Windows XP cannot be booted from an external Optical Drive because it will reinitialize the USB Host Bus while starting and lose access to it, as I recall. BSOD's display bugcheck codes, not standard Windows Error Codes.

So while 0x7b indicates ERROR_INVALID_NAME as a Windows Error Code, for the BSOD the code is a BugCheck code and indicates INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE.
