Solve : Window Instant Messenger query?

Answer»

Hi Everyone,

Before downloading SP2, when my Windows Messenger logged in, ( please understand I am speaking about the Windows Instant messenger that comes with Windows XP and looks like a little green man on my task bar) a tab would come up and tell me if there was any new mail in my default email inbox. A tab would also come up and tell me if any new mail had arrived while I was CHATTING on Windows Instant Messenger.

Now none of these things happen. Instead when I right click to go to my default email inbox, I now have to sign in with my password to get there. I have no pre-information to tell me if there is actually any mail in my Inbox to know if its worth going there. I have no tab come up to tell me if new mail has arrived either.
I Hate it this way.

Someone suggested that SP2 does not support  the Add-in that I was used to and sent me to this site:

http://www.mvps.org/marksxp/WindowsXP/SP2/common.php#msn

Where it states this:

Windows Messenger 4.7 included in SP2 does not support the MSN Add-in

This change is by design, Windows Messenger 4.7.3000 no longer supports the MSN Add-in. In order to use this you must DOWNGRADE to Windows Messenger 4.7.2009 from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/messenger/download.asp   OR   use MSN Messenger. Windows Messenger 4.7.2009 does not support the attachment excution security feature of Windows XP SP2.

Okay so I go to this site to downgrade back to Windows Messenger 4.7.2009 only to find that the site is as clear as Mud.   I cannot find a downgrade on that site at all.  I even used there search facility and nothing.

I don't want to have both Windows Messenger and MSN Instant Messenger on my task bar either.

A friend of mine had the exact same problem and ENDED up removing SP2 just so he could have the Windows Instant Messenger back to how it used to be.  I FELT that was a bit drastic and now that SP2 is installed should probably keep it.

But what can I do?  Does anyone know anything about this and have any suggestions?

Thank you in Advance for any help on this,

Katzkatz.....Here's what I would do ....
Close out messenger 4.7 and remove it from you start menu......
( In fact I would remove it completely ) but thats up to you .
Then I would D/L MSN messenger 6.2.....
http://messenger.msn.com/
Now you have the latest messenger , I believe .
It will notify you when new E mails arrive .......
When you boot up , it will be in your start menu .......so just sign in and minimize it and forget about it until you want to use it. It will also notify you when any of your contacts signed on .

Hope this helps you .

dl65  You can disable Windows Messenger (Which is a known source for causing spam) using a program like Shoot The Messenger.

I suggest you INSTALL MSN Messenger once you have disabeled Messenger. (It wil no longer show in your systray) you can SIMPLY re-enable it using the same program.re-configure the firewall in sp2?

Solve : Bbdaniha.exe?

Answer»

Almost everyday I have a problem shutting down my computer because of this Bbdaniha executable.   Instead of shutting down normally, Bbdaniha has a problem and I always have to click the "end now" button.

This executable resides in my C:\windows\system32 directory, and BBDANIHA.EXE-0AAC6A4D.pf is in my C:\windows\prefetch directory.

I have no idea what this stuff is!?  I've searched in Google, MICROSOFT, etc.  Any ideas??right click on this file...properties...does it tell you anything....Just that the type of file is an Application. The BBDANIHA.EXE-0AAC6A4D.pf says that it opens with "Unknown Application"if the file in question does not ring any bells ....that you have downloaded or loaded via  a cdrom is odds on that this maybe a trojan run this >http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/Scan for viruses, spyware and trojans.I've run antivirus software & spyware software.  Doesn't appear to be a virus or spyware.

Could it be a lost executable that wasn't properly uninstalled during a software UNINSTALL?type regedit in the run box then type the file name in the search windows of the reg editor under view option....is it listed as an application or program...The search didn't find anything in the regedit.type msconfig in the run box and in the start up folder disable it..are  there any listings in your add/remove programs? about it >if you not SURE about the exe..delete it..i dont think its belongs to windows? Can you not simply remove it? Files in your prefetch folder can be safely removed. Emptying your prefetch folder on a regular basis prevents that folder from taking up too MUCH diskspace. There's nothing in the startup folder (under msconfig) and there's no listings in the add/remove programs.

I'll try removing it from the prefetch folder (what is a prefetch folder?). And I'm sure I can move the .exe file.windows  uses prefetch to speed booting times....leave the exe in there ...if after 3 days has passed windows will dump it...Thanks, I'll give it a try!!

Solve : my computer won't open any program?

Answer»

I have this really big problem with my computer. I had two anti virus programs installed (AVG and Norman) and about a week ago AVG detected some Trojan horses and worm called agebot or something like that. As far as I know, both of them were removed successfully. But after that, when I turned on my computer again, the problems began. Since that, I haven't been able to start several programs like Musicmatch jukebox, Windows Media Player or a program that connects my computer to the internet. But Word, Explorer, Outlook and all anti virus programs work.
I looked at processes in task manager and I found out, that whenever I tried to open i.e. Musicmatch jukebox, a PROCESS called mmjb.exe started, but after few seconds it disappeared. Also my CPU ussage is often 100% even if I don't have any programs running.
When I have i.e. three aplications open(explorer and anti virus programs), they only show in task manager applications but not on taskbar. Whenever I want to switch the programs I have to run Task manager by pressing ctrl alt delete and switch them from there.
I also noticed, that copy-paste function and links in explorer don't work. Whenever I want to start Windows media player, I get the message: "can't perform operation, low memory."
I tried to solve a problem by using system tools like Windows back up, but the application doesn't open. When I try to open system restore, a window appears, but it is all white. I tried to update my comuter by visting microsoft.com, but all links on that page work normally expect Windows Update.
I really don't know what to do, please help me. Thanks!  what operating system have you got it helps..scan for trojans ....svchost exe?>http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/Windows XPyes, many of svchost.exe processes are running...some of them maybe genuine? run the scan...and what was the worm called?and run an online scan as well>http://housecall.trendmicro.com/   also disable system restore ...and then run the scans...I ran the scan and 3 viruses were found - html mh tredir.g, DOS agobot.gen and troj ntserv.a ... I also used antivirus program Nod32 and it found a trojan called noclose.gen... All of the viruses were removed, but nothing has changegd...
how can I disable system restore?http://www.theeldergeek.com/system_restore.htmI can't open system restore application... When I click on system restore, a new window opens, but it is blank...Depending on how effective the virus has been you might be looking at a reinstall.

Do you have a rescue disk or virus scan disk that can boot indepentdent of the OS?

Running this might eliminate the viruses and allow you to REPAIR the system.

I'd also advise running a single AV program rather than two at once.I'm thinking about formatting disk. I have two disks - can I format only one i.e. "C" and keep all my documents and other files on disk "D"? And will I be able to read files after reinstalling windows xp?Yes.I've just realised I can't move my files from one disk to another, because copy-paste doesn't work and neither does "move to" function.  I really don't want to lose all my data. Do you have any IDEA what to do? I guess I have to reinstall OS... Do I lose all my data when I do that? Are there any other chances to keep these files? I can't copy them to CD...Have you tried dragging and dropping your files onto the other HDD?

Why can you not copy files? Does it give you an error? How big are the files you are trying to save?

what do you mean by dragging and dropping them to HDD? How can I do it?
there are no error messages. It just doesn't work - i can't even copy TEXT in Word... It looks like a whole copy-paste function doesn't work. The files are quite big - about 70 Mb each...Select the file, keep the LMB (Left Mouse Button) pressed and drag the files to the other HDD (Using Windows Explorer or My Computer) and then release the mouse button to copy.

I am assuming that both HDD's are connected and they are both being detected by Windows.

Solve : Desktop, XP is slow to boot??

Answer»

Hello and thank you for taking a look at my problem.

My desktop has XP Pro SP3 & it became slow to boot. It was taking longer and longer to boot over time.
Each time I turned it on, the startup screen would show the Windows logo with a blue bar at the bottom and just before it does the keyboard check, the blue bar freezes for up to a minute.

From there, the procedure continues to the blue screen and hangs again sometimes for several minutes. (up to about 30 minutes I've tested before I switch off the power and try again.)
Sometimes it takes several attempts to get to the desktop.
Other times when I start up, the boot sequence is reasonably OK and skips through the keyboard check quickly, continuing on to the desktop and operating normally.

Is there a WAY I can test for conflicts that might be causing this please?

Thank you InmoGuru. How long does it take to boot to safe mode? If the boot is normal to safe mode, let's try a selective startup:

Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.

After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.
Thanks Allan.

I'll run through that procedure and get back to you to let you know what happens.

If I go quiet for a while you'll understand why.

The last few additions to programs were "Samsung Kies", "HJT", "CCleaner","Coreldraw 14 suite", "Password finder" and "XNView"

Personally I'm thinking Samsung Kies as the highest possibility in that list.

It was happening before I added COREL so I don't suspect that one in particular.
StartupLite

Download StartupLite by MalwareBytes to your Desktop.
Doubleclick StartupLite.exe to launch the program.
Ensure the Disable box is checked.
Click Continue.
A pop up message will tell you the unecessary startup items in your list have been disabled and ask you to restart your computer.
Re-start your computer.
With all possible respect, I'd rather the individual chooses what startup programs to enable and disable than a piece of software. We are also trying to troubleshoot the startup problem Thanks Allan for your help.

This computer starts in safe mode and takes about 2 minutes to the desktop screen.
I tried it a few times to see if there was any changes in the safe mode startup.  Not so.
I don't know if that's a good thing or not. I have rarely started in safe mode.

At least it was consistent.

One thing did occur though on a restart in ordinary mode, that was, the computer cycled through the restart 3 to 4 times before settling down to useable/desktop.
However there after, the computer has started in one cycle since. So I don't know what that was about?

I picked up another 1 gig of ram and inserted it, so now this computer is running with 3 Gig of ram. Although that doesn't seem to have improved its speed or useability at all.

Another thing that I have tried, is to clean all the dust from inside the case, the fans, the THERMAL sink & any other area of interest, added a 1 gig ram stick, (after reseating the others one by one & testing the performance and stalling issues).
I removed the chip, cleaned it & re-administered a new cover or thermal grease, replaced all and while I was at it added a second CD, Dual layer burner. (Because it was there). ( I don't know if that was a smart thing to do or not yet, but the case was fully disassembled at the time & that's the best time to instal a burner).

All in all, there has now been an IMPROVEMENT in the startup procedure and it doesnt seem to be hanging any more, but the computer still takes a long time to open windows of different sorts, web browser, programs, windows media player, office/word. I would have thought the addition of an extra 1 Gig of ram would have improved it overall.

Allan, I will try the msconfig procedure you suggested and follow through with that next.

I appreciate too Superdave's suggestion and it may just speed up the process of going through things one by one. Perhaps even GIVE me a bit of an idea where to look for any conflicts but I'll do it all by the numbers so I have a clear understanding of what I am doing. After all I have the time on my hands now that I'm not working for a while. Save for the fact that its nearly Christmas & everyone will be busy stimulating their respective economies for a while.Well that was easy SuperDave.
I ran the program and this desktop now loads very quickly without hanging at all.

Maybe there was some kind of issue in one of the programs at startup.

Thanks for your help SuperDave.

Allan, as the computer seems to have settled in nicely now, I dont see the need to continue with your suggestion, however I will keep in mind if there are any detrimental effects in the future for me to try if required.

I hope everyone has/had a great Thanksgiving.  Cheers.

Solve : Setting up a Kiosk style workstation?

Answer»

Hey All,

So I have 2 computers that I need to have open to public use. Obviously I want the user accounts to have extremely limited functionality, but there are also a few other things that I would like to add into it.

First, I'd like a message at log in that would inform the user that they have 5 minutes (or whatever) before they are automatically logged off.

Second, I'd like to have the browser highly limited on domains that it can access. In fact, I'd like to make it like 3-5 domains that it will allow.

It's kinda like a kiosk setup, but without any custom program/shell... like a library computer with a few more limits.

Anyway, if anyone knows of either a free software that can do this for me, or how to set it all up (or a reference list of how to do it), I'd be fantastically grateful.

-KyleActually if you are using XP, then Microsoft actually offers a program called Steady State. Install on an admin account and you can control the other accounts on the PC. Disable software install, create opening messages, set time limits, disable usb and way, way more.

Just do a search for Steady State and you will find it available for download and the manual is still on Microsoft's website. Although if you are decent with PC's you can figure it out pretty easy. You can also o a quick search for Steady State Alternative for other options.Question.
You said about 5 web sites. But Web sites link to other web sites. Do you want that?

Also, do you really want dynamic content? Could you not just download the pages you want and nerve them to people?

How you talked to a Librarian to learn how they do it?
Chrisxs5 - Thanks. I'll have a look at that. I'm definitely not bad with computers... so yeah. I was thinking about writing an autohotkey script or something but figured I'd check to see if there was a less intensive way of doing it. So thanks.

Geek-9pm - Honestly, linking would have to be fairly limited. Most of the links would be reference links. So I could probably say enable the links on the first window, but not any subsequent windows. Also though, I will probably cache/download most of the content so that other domains don't become an issue. Some schools, public libraries and internet cafes use special software filters to prevent people from going to unwelcome web sites.
The GENERAL term is called "Content Control"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Content-control_software
You have to buy it from someone who has already done the work. It is not easy. The software has to have a database of places that are allowed.
Quote

Content-control software, content filtering software, secure web gateways, censorware, web filtering software, content-censoring software, and content-blocking software are terms describing software designed to restrict or control the content a READER is authorised to access, especially when UTILISED to restrict material delivered over the Internet via the Web, e-mail, or other means. Content-control software determines what content will be available or perhaps more often what content will be blocked

I thought hosts was for just redirection of a few items.
Please elaborate. Can you use a hosts file so that only a few sites will be shown. If so, how?  Curious minds need to know.

This might work for the casual or inexperienced user. Disable DNS and DHCP and set up the Hosts file thus:

# sites you want to allow
212.58.246.91 bbc.co.uk
212.140.180.162 tesco.co.uk

#Attempt to block all the rest by blacklisting all the TLDs you can think of
127.0.0.1 .com
127.0.0.1 .org
127.0.0.1 .net
127.0.0.1 .edu
(etc)

However, someone could type an IP address in a browser address bar if it was available, whereas using a firewall you can explicitly block all IPs except the ONES you wish to allow.

Chrisxs5 - looks like steady state is going to be the ticket. Just testing it now, but it look's like it's got exactly what's needed!

Geek-9pm - I'm not looking for ANYTHING filter/censor related. Basically just whitelisting for the internet.

Salmon Trout & patio - HOSTS will work if needed, however SteadyState also has built-in features for exactly what I need. The drawback is that it leaves me stuck with using IE when I personally prefer FF. Anyway, I think I'll try hosts if I end up really wanting more than what I can get from SS/IE.

Anyway, gotta restart now. BBL!So after toying around with SteadyState a bit, it looks like exactly what I need. Can limit all sorts of stuff and even has Disk/OS protection features so that the OS can't be corrupted/damaged. Lock command prompt, disable r-clicking and basically all the easy tricks that someone could use to get around it!

I'm having a few issues getting the internet to work while limited to sites... :/ for some reason or another it won't connect to any sites, including the ones specified in the exceptions. So I'm gonna read the guide and see if I can't figure it out.

I'll probably post back in a day or two to let you all know if I got it figured out or not.

Thanks again!

Glad I could help. They did excellent with Steady State, I wish they would have carried it forward to other versions of Windows. Quote from: patio on November 09, 2013, 02:39:59 PM
I wasn't aware it didn't like FireFox...

I'm not 100% sure that it doesn't like FF, I just say that because all of the SS settings for this are under the heading of IE features... so we'll see.

Anyway, I'm gonna go grab the actual workstation that will be setup this way so I can tinker with it there. It's getting a little annoying to try to mess with it on the workstation that I actually use all the time. lol!

So yeah... I'll let you guys know how it goes.

- kyle_engineerIt might not like anything but IE, it is a Microsoft product. I used it in a training room environment and all I had on it was IE. I prefer Chrome myself but also prefer not to have a users screw up pcs. That doesn't mean anything at all why it wouldn't work properly on another browser however...
As you said ...you only tried it on IE.

Solve : Prevent multiple opening of the same program in Windows??

Answer»

Hello

Sometimes it happens that I double-click on an icon of a (any) program and - nothing happens.
Then I double-click on it again, and (in a couple of seconds, or more) - to my surprise - that program then opens twice!

This usually happens when the computer's CPU is high, and it needs a couple of seconds (or more) to launch the first instance of the application.

So, I wonder, is there any utility program that will perhaps:
- Detect the memory proces of already started application, and
- prevent, or pop-out a warning-message when initiated twice (or more!)

Is there something of this kind already available?

Best regards

This sounds very similar to a problem that I am having with my Dell desktop.

Both Allan and Superdave have made suggestions to me about how to tell what processes are consuming all the CPU and or memory use and making it slow to get into WINDOWS and programs thereafter.

Perhaps there might be some useful information here

Alternately you can use the Ctrl Alt Del ( press all THREE at the same time, you need two hands to do this unless you have very long fingers) to bring up a "Windows Security' screen. Select the "Task manager" icon. It will bring up the Task Manager box.

Then select in the top row "Processes", from there you can see what processes are running on your computer. There is also a selection for "Performance". This will give you an idea of how hard your computer is working.
It sounds like there is a program running in the background that is stealing all the memory available.

If you go to "Control panel" and open "System" click on that and select "Hardware" in the system properties box that comes up. You will see in the top AREA "Device Manager", click on that. This will open another box that shows all your computers components. Check in the left hand column whether you see any yellow warning icons.
You can also click on the plus signs to open each of the titles to see if there is a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in it. These warning signs mean there is a problem with this item.To answer your question directly - No. I don't know of any existing software that does that.

You could write a script fairly EASILY (in any number of languages), but I'm assuming that you'd probably not want to do that. Also, while it is quite simple to make a taskkilling script (even with a .bat FILE), it will require a bit of good logic to filter what is user error and what is system necessity. For example "svchost.exe" is supposed to run multiple times. Killing all svchost instances results in a forced system shutdown. That's just one example of things needing multiple instances. The other thing to consider is that if you have a script or program running that is cross-checking the task list it's going to then hog more resources and delay the launch of the app even more! So yeah...

Honestly, the simplest and best solution - upgrade your hardware (or do some software debugging if needed) or just wait the 10-20 seconds to launch.

Making sure that you primary HDD is less than 50% full is a good place to start. Cleaning our un-needed programs (and especially toolbars and stuff) is a good place too.

Solve : SLLOOOWWW XP...Repair??

Answer»

My Windows XP Pro is running very slowly.  Have defragged, deleted unnecessary files, run virus, spyware scan, tried a system restore but it would not restore.  It is VERY slow to print and keeps giving send error reports when working on programs such as Word.  I removed the printer software and Office and reinstalled.  Still having problems.
Would a repair via the reinstallation CD help?  Any tips on doing this correctly?Which file system are you using, FAT32 or NTFS ?

Have you converted from FAT32 to NTFS at any stage, and if you did did you ensure that the Allocation units have 4096 byte clusters?

Open a DOS window and type: chkdsk

You should see a reading pertaining to: 4096 bytes in each allocation unit.

Another reason for slowing down is spyware and Trojans, so you should use SpyBot SD, AdAware SE and SpywareBlaster to keep your system clean.

If you are using the NTFS file system then a fragmented Master File Table will also slow down the system.

Download the evaluation copy of Diskeeper 8 PROFESSIONAL (Not the Home version) and run a boot-time defragmentation to correct this problem.

It does NOT matter if you are using XP Home or Professional, but only Diskeepr Pro has the ability to defragment the MFT.

XP uses a slimmed down version of Diskeeper so INSTALLING this program will REPLACE your EXISTING defrag.

When you uninstall Diskeeper 8 your old defrag will be restored to use.

I consider that Diskeeper 8 Professional is well worth the money as it can be SET to defragment all of your drives automatically.

Really Microsoft should have integrated the FULL version of Diskeeper because of its labour saving attributes and technical ability.Another thing you can do is to unhide files and folders and run a search for the normal.dot template. If it is corrupted in any way then Word wil not WORK properly. Uninstalling Word makes no difference as the template remains on the system, so delete normal.dot and reboot.

Then try using Word again.

Is your keyboard functioning properly? Is it USB or PS/2?HI and thanks for the replies. Resolved!! The F Lock on my MS natural keyboard wasn't on and that DISABLES F8 (at least in this instance).
Regards, GNA  I hope you used AUTOSTREAMER 1·0 to add SP2 to your XP CD and burn a new XP CD from the .iso image, before installing.

You GET a nice clean install that way. FASTER too.

You can add the recovery console and Fax software too, if you want to.

Did you partition the DRIVE so that you can image the installation more easily?

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]1) Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next reply

2) Have you recently updated any drivers?

3) Please open Device Manager - are there any yellow or red symbols?

4) Do you get these bsod's at random or when you are performing a specific task or running a specific program?Hi Allan,

First of all thanks for your reply.

Well the above data provided was from Blue screen view itself which you have suggested. Though i did i once again and the below data is done how you recommended.

No Drivers have been updated.

Though i have had similar crashes earlier too. I have data of that too. Let me know if posting that would be helpful to find the error.

Yes i get these crashes randomly. Not on running a specific program.

Thanks Again. Okay thanks. I asked you to repost because only the first entry in each report is complete. I'll go AHEAD and delete the ones you just posted just to shorten the length of this thread.

Are there any yellow or red symbols in Device Manager?

And when you say you had similar crashes, were they the same error code as above?Well there are a couple of yellow symbols in device manager. They are under Modem Section where Softv92 Data fax modem # 3 to #32 . Thats where all the yellow symbols are.

Crash Data below from earlier crashes that have occurred. One common driver that i have observed which is part of the crash is ntoskrnl.exe

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Okay, the fact that the bsod's occur only intermittently is going to make it more difficult to troubleshoot, but let's give it a go.

1) Please check for and install the following if they are available: update for your bios, chipset driver, modem driver, and display adapter driver. If you are running a desktop system, go to the websites of the hardware manufacturers for the updates. If you are running a laptop, get the drivers ONLY from the website of your laptop manufacturer.

2) Download and run Autoruns (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx). Click on the LOGON tab. Then click on the "save as" icon at the top and save the report in TXT (text) format. Then cut and paste that report in your next post.Finished Checking Bios, chipset driver, modem and display adapters..they are all up to date at the moment.

As you had asked for the autoruns data. You can find it below.

deleted by Allan - wrong infoSorry, that's not what I asked for and I've deleted it for the sake of brevity in this thread. I want the LOGON tab, not the Explorer Tab. Thank you.My apologies on sending in the wrong data. But even when i try to just take the data from the logon tab it gives me data of the entire thing on the .txt

So here am attaching a screenshot of the logon tab. I hope that helps.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Uncheck the "Update USB" item and reboot. Let's see what happens.Would you want me to restart the computer and check if it happens again or not.Yes, that's what "reboot" means On restart got another blue screen. *censored*. Have attached a snapshot.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]No need to post pictures of your display. I'd like to do a few things. First, if you have anything PLUGGED into a usb port please unplug it.

1) To check the ram, download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility. Let the test run for several hours. If you see any errors, that's the problem. If you don't, proceed to the next step

2) To run checkdisk, open a command prompt window and type: chkdsk /r  (then press ENTER). You'll be told the disk is in use and asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes, exit the command prompt window, and reboot.

If you get another blue screen error after doing the above, we will try a selective startup.

Solve : How can I transfer my Favorites & Program Fold?

Answer»

Would anyone know how I can transfer my Favorites & Programs Folders/Files from one computer to another? I bought a new comp. I would like to transfer them all at once, as I have too many to do, The old one Does Not have a CD Burner. It only has a Floppy Drive. Is there a way I can e-mail them?

Would appreciate anyone's help!

Thank You,
GeorgeSmokie.....I think the easiest way to do that would be to remove the cd burner from your new pc and install it in the old one then.....copy what you want to a cd or CDS and then remove the burner from the old one and re-install it in the new one.
And yes you could also Email from one pc to the other ....you will have to zip the folders you wish to E mail. But it will work ......or you could network the two pc and do it that way.

Hope this answers your questions.

dl65 I donot think that copying your Program Files folder will do you much good. The programs will require to be installed on the other PC using the installer, they may not function PROPERLY otherwise.

And if the files are not very big (Your favourites SURE can't be)  use the Floppy Disk Drive.I believe Raptor is right about the program files; they will have to be re-installed. The INSTALLATION often scatters files throughout several folders (i.e., exe in one[Program Files], dlls in another [system32 I think], etc.) However, you should backup your data files to a CD(.docs, xls, jpegs, etc.)

With your Favorites, go to the file menu in your browser, select import/export and the wizard should step you through the process. Then save it to a floppy if it fits, if not then to a CD.

Good luck!

Solve : scandsik hangs @ 85%, then seems 2 loop over time?

Answer»

Win98 won't come up. Scandisk hangs at 85% completion, then after (hours) will SHOW corss-linked clusters ; I then request 'fix' option.. next it goes into 'checking for cross linked files'.. and repeats the last two steps over and over..long time , little progress.
1)Is there a way to get around this auto-invoked scandisk?
2)  I would like to avoid re-install if possible (CD drive is down too !).
3) If I have (windows) CAB files on C drive, can I install from there? ..
Thanks
Hal (not the computer)
You can normally stop scandisk at start-up by pressing the key it says on the screen ('Esc' or 'X', I can;'t remember off-hand).  If it won't let you then you have more serious problems.

Start by downloading the specific hard-drive analysing tool from the manufacturer's web-site - they all have them & they are best for checking for physical problems which you may have.  If you have the option, slave the drive to another machine and run scandisk from there.

If the .cab files are all in the same folder with the rest of the setup files for Windows (I usually put them in a folder called Win98) then you can install from there.  It's a standard method of installing Windows from scratch to a) speed things up & b) avoid having to re-insert the Windows CD when hardware/software is changedinfo >http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q287914   or locate the pws folder and you should find an icon called setup click this this should re-install win98 without losing any files...Thanks for the replies.
Of course, without windows I doub't I
'll be seeing icons, but perhaps I can get the setup.exe to run.
THanks again
HalCan you not cancel Scandisk? Hold F8 on boot and attempt to start from Safe Mode.Thanks.
 I have no problems going into safe mode;
'Win' command automatically forces a scandisk.
Manually invoked scandisk , of course, has same result.

If I could tell the windows command not to do a scandisk, (by hook or by crook), I would try that to see what errors MIGHT occur.
Hscandisk info>http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=273017 Merlin,
Thanks for the references -
I learned a bit from them..
Like how to indicate 'no auto scandisk' and a couple of things about hidden , read-only files and the attrib command, along the way.
Probably, the cache did not get written, leaving the file system on the C drive quite a mess (although I can access files via DOS) .
I shall preserve files on peripherals as I am able, and
will have to re-install windows, after I have installed a new CD-rom.

Regards,
Harold
in msdos a:\prompt   type

cd windows enter

c:\prompt type  scanreg/restore
and chose the last good cab file...and if you do this..it should take you back to windows...Tried the scanreg /restore.
It worked, but windows only goes as far as the windows logo screen (i..e. no change).
Scandisk /checkonly mentions long file names, then in checking the  filesys, shows error 'directory entry had an invalid FAT chain..did not correct'.
for c:progra~1\online~1\compus~1\L1keyF.02L  -
The WHOLE directory is junk, but when I try to erase (replying Y to the prompt) the whole thing, it fails with message'file not found'.
Further more, the DIR /s command can't find the file, either.

Ideas ae appreciated.
TheL1keyf file looks like some kind of registry data.

Solve : Plug and play configuration error, dell dimension 8200?

Answer»

I have a cranky old dell dimension 8200 that I have 3 external hdd connected to. While cleaning behind the computer I simply brushed against the USB cables and now am getting 3 lines of "Plug & Play Configuration Error" with the command to strike f1 to CONTINUE or f2 to run setup. Striking f1 has the system boot but the DISPLAY is all out of whack and no programs want to load. Help please. Thanks.Do you have the Windows Disc to perform a repair installation of XP?If you do not...another thing you can try is via Device Manager remove ALL instances of USB roots and HUBS...you will recieve an error warning...ignore it.
Re-boot and see if it fixes the issue. Quote

Striking f1 has the system boot but the display is all out of whack and no programs want to load.

Patio's suggestion might fix this if out of whack display means that you can still navigate, but resolution is messed up etc. But if its beyond NAVIGATIONAL means then a repair install may be needed to correct this. I assumed that out of whack is = beyond navigational means with mouse and visual GUI.

Also, have you tried restarting with the ext HDDs disconnected?

It kinda sounds to me like the HDDs are creating P&P errors that are then affecting your monitor. I say that since it renders 3 errors and you have the 3 drives. You don't have 3 monitors on a P&P config... So I'd lean toward it being an issues like that. Also - it's a really quick test!

1) Ensure PC is off.
2) Unplug ALL 3 external HDDs.
3) Power PC back on.

If it starts then you can reconnect the HDDs and they usually work fine.

Anyway, it may not work, but many of my older Dells THROW errors when booting with large USB storage attached. And it's possible that josteling the USB ports confused something.

If this doesn't work, then I'd go with the other suggestions. But this is a quick thing to try.Good points...

Solve : My computer can't start a program?

Answer»

I have had this problem for several months.

My computer is Dell Dimension 3000, WinXP, Pentium 4 (I plan to get a Win7 or WIN8 soon!)

Whenever I click an icon to start a program, I get nothing! I try to restart the computer, but I don't get a restart button. I have to yank the cord from my computer.

Do any of you have a solution?

  Brian
Just hold your start button until it shuts down.Did you try right-clicking on the icon and selecting Run?

Please download  SREng

  •   Extract it to Desktop and double click SREngLdr.EXE to run it
  •   Select SYSTEM Repair from the left PANE.
  • Click on File  Association
  • Select all entries that has an Error  status click [Repair]
  • Refer to this image for an  example:

  •   In your case, it would be .EXE
  • Close SREng now.
.  I tried to OPEN it from your link, and all I got was a Page Load Error message.

I tried to download it from CNET, but upon loading the computer froze up twice.

  Any help?

BrianYou should be redirect to a new page in 15 seconds. Click on the download button and select System Repair Engineer, second on from the TOP. You may have to download it on another computer. I did, and everything was normal. I hope that this remains the case until I get my Win7/8 computer.

Solve : Desperately Need Help Deleting EMPTY Folder!?

Answer»

I have included 2 pictures so you can see what I'm dealing with (don't judge my choice in music lol). Anyways, I always make backups of all of my music and movies and EVERYTHING else that's important.... Now I'm trying to delete my music folder that is on my WD portable hard drive and it won't let me because of that ONE folder... I can delete everything else within the music folder, but not that one, I can't even open it. In the pics you see below, those are the warnings I get when I try to delete both folders and the warning I get when trying to open the folder in question within my Music folder....

Are you guys with me? I just need to figure out how the heck to delete that ONE folder. I am the admin on this computer. I have 100% rights and whatnot, so what gives? It's driving me nuts because I have a folder with that exact same name that actually contains music!

Someone PLEASE help me delete this folder!! I'm going CRAZY!

If it is empty, there is not need to delete it!
This behavior is documented ELSEWHERE. It means the folder was not created by you inside the user space of your account. You are trying to delete a folder that belongs to somebody else without their permission. Talk to the other people that share your computer. We do not get into family fights.

If your and your family wish to share documents and pictures, put them in the area labeled 'Shared Documents' and you will have no trouble.

If you think the drive has a file defect, run the check disk utility.

Hey MAN, this is MY computer.. I am the ONLY person that uses the computer. I live by myself and I am the one that created the folder. What I did was put that cd on my portable HD and for some reason the copying process screwed up and now that folder (which is completely empty) is on my portable HD and I can't do anything about it. I WANT it gone so I can put the actual folder that contains the music onto my portable HD... Something went wrong while I was copying it to my portable HD and now it won't let me open it or move it or do anything!

There has GOT to be a way to delete this folder!! I can't believe no one knows how, or that Microsoft would make it impossible to delete.Oh and I went to "Tools" and ran a disc check and it acted as if nothing was wrong! *censored*? Clearly something is wrong if I can't delete an empty folder!http://www.filehippo.com/download_unlocker/Wow.. I ran the disc check on it and went through the whole 2hr process and when it was done... BLAM-O! I was able to delete the folder!

Thanks guys!I guess you shouldn't have gotten bombastic prematurely 2 posts ago then...

Solve : factory reset XP home ed without disk?

Answer»

I was given a PAVILION zd8000 17" laptop, need to reset back to the factory SETTING without CD's.  System restore only restores to a certain point.  I want a new and clean installation. If you don't have a recovery partition (usually you'll get a prompt before Windows starts loading alon the lines of "press F12 to enter system recovery") you'll need the original install media.  If you don't have that, you'll probably need to contact HP, or failing that buy a new copy of Windows. If you can borrow an exact copy of the version of Windows that you have on that computer, you can do a re-install using the codes that should be on a STICKER on your computer. The OP may wish to contact the HP forum and ask that question.
http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Welcome-to-the-Forum/ct-p/about
But if they do not help much, come bask here. I have owned two to three HP or Compaq computers and have found how to install XP without the exact CD.
But try them first. The issue is GETTING the right drivers. If it has a COA, you do not have to buy a retail CD.

Solve : switcing back to media player?

Answer»

HI, I am helping a friend out with some computer questions.  All her music files play automatically in Real player, she would like them to play in media player.  Is there a away to have all music files open with media right off the start?  I can do this on XP.. but she has 98... and I CANT figure it out.  Sad THING is.... I swore I had that problem before... just totally forgot the solution....

There should have been something like a PREFERENCES menu in Windows Media Player..... but you NEED to tell us what version of WM you are using.....
My version of WMP is old and I never use it, so this may not apply to newer versions. Open WMP, click view, options, formats and select all. This should allow WMP to reclaim all formats that it is capable of in file associations. Real Player is fairly agressive and will probaby still open for .ra and and other Real Player formats.Win98 supports Windows Media 9 and I stopped using it before 9 EVEN came out.... I go for Winamp....... Mainly because my Winamp skin looks nice on my desktop. Try looking n the propertys of the file and see if there is an associate command.  If ther is you can associate that file extension with the programme.

I think that somewhere in Real Player, you can uncheck certain programme types that you don't want to open with Real Player.

Then after all drivers etc. are re-installed re-introduce the 2nd drive.Thank you, patio, I'll crack on with that tomorrow.OK, that particular route has ground to a halt.  I've got ' No VGA signal '  so I can't proceed.  I've swapped out the graphics card-  no result.  Same for the monitor.  Is my mobo finished ?   I hope not, it's a socket 939. At what point in the procedures is this happening ? ?
Do you have video booting to the XP CD ? ?
How did you wipe the drives ? ?
Is the 2nd drive dis-connected yet ? ?I haven't booted the machine for many months.
The last time I used it I was attempting to address the ' NTLDR is missing ' message-  which of course was DISPLAYED on the monitor.
I put the machine aside and returned to the task yesterday.
That's when the ' No VGA signal ' appeared , on first boot, and I posted here.
I've swapped out the monitor.
I've swapped out the graphics card-  both of which are good.
Message is ' No VGA signal '
Any ideas ?

I've disconnected each of the drives in turn but can't proceed with no VGA signal.
There is no VGA signal when attempting to boot from CD.Boot to the XP CD...you can delete the partition on the 1st HDD...format and then continue with Setup which will install XP.There is no VGA signal when attempting to boot from the XP CD.  Try another monitor...then try the onboard video...Yes, I've already swapped monitors-  no change.
I'm glad you mentioned the onboard video.  I would have tried that already but it's a nine pin male VGA and I've got nothing with which to connect a fifteen pin VGA monitor.  It's an aging Gigabyte board, a GA- K8NXP-9.    I'd never noticed the 9 pin connection before as I've always used a PCI-e card. All i can suggest then is borrow a vid card to test and swap it in there...
At that point you can decide if it's worth putting any money in to it...or not.As I said, I've already installed a spare video card-  to no effect.

Where can I get a cable which is 9 pin female AVG on one end and 15 pin male on the other ?   What would such a cable be called ? Nope, this board doesn't have a video port.  The 9 pin is a seriaL.    I'll check the PSU NEXT.

Solve : Corrupt Registry Hive?

Answer»

Thanks in advance for your help.

This is my work computer, which has been on all morning, when suddenly it's a blue screen.  I try to reboot and get "windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt"  \windows\system32\config\system

I've been researching this for the last couple hours and I do see where people have been successful by getting into the "recovery console" by selecting f8 when booting.  Although, every instance says to use your "start-up" disc.  I have no idea where mine is.

Is there any way around this?

Thanks guys, really, really, appreciate it.You need an XP CD. Once you get one, boot to it and select R (Recovery Console)

At the command prompt type:

ren c:\windows\system32\config\system system.old
copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config

RebootI don't know where my XP cd is.  Can I call a friend with one and use theirs? As long as it's the same version as yours (Home/Pro), yes. And it's even legal to do so.

I've also renamed this thread to something more relevant.Thank you.

I assume "last known good configuration" won't work?  That would be too easy right, lol.

Is there any way I tell whether I have the XP "Pro" or "Home" addition? You have a corrupt registry hive. There are only two ways to fix it and both require an XP cd:

1) Replace it with a backup created by your system and stored in c:\windows\repair
or
2) Do a repair install

Unless you had the foresight to install the recovery console as a boot option (and you didn't), those are your choices. Go ahead and borrow a copy of XP - it's been so long since I've done this I'm not sure it won't work even with the incorrect version. Worst case, it won't work and you'll know you need the other version.

This assumes you don't have a recovery partition on your system which would allow you to return to "system shipped" state - that would be your only other possibility.
By the way, in the future you should really consider creating a regular backup (image) of your drive. It will provide a safe haven to which you can return in the event of a major failure such as you are currently experiencing. Thanks Allan.

Well, for the moment, it appears I got very lucky (knock on wood).  I went and got an XP Pro disc to boot from.  Went to "R", let her run a bit, then it asked for "Admin" password, I hit enter, and got "wrong password".  So I started entering "exit", kept getting wrong password.  On the third try it said I had entered the wrong password too many times, and asked if I wanted to restart.  So I hit "enter" to restart, and she fired up as normal, lol.

I'm backing up the entire system right now.  This might be a lame question, it's backing up to a folder I created on my desktop, can I back it up to a disk, or thumbdrive?Backing up to the same drive serves no purpose. You MUST backup to a separate drive or off-disc medium. Here's something I put together a while ago - you might want to use disc imaging - I think everyone should:

Disk Imaging software takes a "snapshot" of your drive as it exists at the time you create the image. You can then restore the entire image or any file(s) or folder(s) you choose. It is a virtually foolproof way of backing up your system and providing a safe haven in the event of a catastrophe that requires you to blow away your system partition and restore it to a previous state. It also allows you to "test" various software and be confident that you have a the ability to return to the prior state any time you choose.

I use Acronis True Image. It is the best of BREED, but it isn't free. The best free alternative is Macrium Reflect.

1) I create an image of my system partition once a week to a second hard drive and keep the 2 or 3 most RECENT images. I also image my other partitions about once a month. I always enable "verify image" in the options. It takes a little longer, but insures a valid image.

2) I also create an image before performing any drive level function (ie, changing the size of a partition) or making any significant change to the OS (installing a SERVICE pack, upgrading IE, etc). Also sometimes before installing new software.

3) Images may be created on any medium (cd, dvd, external drive, etc). For obvious reasons they should not be stored on the same drive you are imaging. The best option is a second internal hd if you have one.

4) Images may be created "in the background" within the OS. If you need to restore the system partition, that will need to be done before the OS loads. You can start the process within the application in the OS and it will then tell you it needs to reboot to FINISH the process. Alternatively, you can boot to a "recovery disk" which you can create when you first install the software (or to the application disk itself if you have one). Other partitions can be restored without a reboot.

Solve : Computer Reverting?

Answer»

I don't really know what is the problem, but whenever I turn my COMPUTER off completly, the next time I start it up, it will be reverted to a certain point.

And when I mean reverted, it will be like anything i did between the point of the REVERT point and whenever I shut the computer down didn't even happen. It's getting a little annoying because I can't save anything, can't download anything, because it won't be there the next time i start it up. I just started leaving my computer on all the time, but I know this isn't good for my computer.

If anyone has any idea what is causing this, please post. I pretty much don't have a computer anymore. I'll provide more info if anyone needs. I just don't know what more to include.Tyson Lee.......When did this issue start ? What operating system are you using ? What Virus scanning app are you using ? What spyware app are you using?
Are you ABLE to send and receive Email ?
Are you able to surf ok ?
What were you doing just prior to all this starting?
"I just started leaving my computer on all the time, but I know this isn't good for my computer."  How do you know leaving your pc on is bad? My p/cs RUN 24 /7S and have never had any problems in 7 years .........

Solve : How to have cd startup?

Answer»

Hi,

I downloaded Xp pro and burned it onto a cd. Now what? I tried to just boot off of it and it just did a normal boot. I used the 6 xp setup floppies and it says it's only for xp home.

Thanks very much for your help today. You don't give a lot of info.  What have you actually downloaded - an .iso? a full zipped version or what?. When you say you can only get a 'normal boot' - are you trying to upgrade an existing version of 'home' or are you trying to install to a clean drive - have you got the boot priority set to boot from CD first? If you are installing Pro you don't need the floppies - they are boot disks for a system already installed. If you do manage to install it, you will still need to activate it - a previous version of home will LOSE its own activation status, & if you use a 'crack' you'll have problems downloading necessary updates.Set your first boot device to CD-ROM in the BIOS and insert the WINDOWS XP CD-ROM.

I suggest you obtain a legal copy of Windows..Hi, it is an ISO file. It is xp pro. I want it to run multi boot with xp home.

Its supposed to boot from the cd. It is an image file.

Thanks for the help!Hi I don't think I need to set the Bios to boot from the cd, I have other cd's that automatically boot from the cd.
I am waiting a reply from their tech support.
Thank you!info>http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/multiboot.mspxIf it is an image file, you will have to use a copying program such as Nero or Alcahol 120% to burn it to a CD first. Donot copy the image, use the option that allows you to use the image to create a proper disk.Hi, I used Nero (the site I got xp pro from gave it to you for FREE). From Nero I choose "disc image or saved project" (record a disc from disc image previously burned
onto the hard drive).
It burned it ok.
I changed the rom bios to have the cd RW be the first to boot from.
When I boot it reads the cd and then just continues on with a normal boot to windows...
Is this supposed to boot up on its own or go into a startup mode to install xp pro? Ive never done this before and all help is much appreciated.
It is supposed to enter the setup, yes.

You may require Windows XP bootdisks. Obtain these from http://www.bootdisk.deHi, Thanks Raptor. I downloaded a bootdisk for xp pro and it gave me 4 files, each too big to put on  a floppy.
I suppose I COULD put it on a cd, is that what I should do?You should place them on floppies in case your BIOS does not support your CD-drive to boot from.

I noticed that you are posting in two topics. I understand that you did not properly copy the .ISO. You will have to do so in order for it to work. Burning the .ISO on a CD will not work, you sort of have to 'unpack' it so you can see each of the folders rathern than only having the .ISO file on a CD..info>http://www.nu2.nu/bootcd/   and is this iso an upgrade?>http://www.windowsreinstall.com/winxppro/installxpmsdos/part1.htm  and more info>http://www.undisker.com/disk-images.html  it may have been easier in the long run to buy it from a store.. Quote

it may have been easier in the long run to buy it from a store..

Especially when it comes to something as important as an Operating System.see other post...scammed ....get you dough back of your credit card company pronto...Yes I hear you, it probably would have been better to buy it at a store but the difference in price ($200) seem to make it a worthwhile venture.

This is not an upgrade, but simply an Xp pro o/s.
Thanks for your great help!

Solve : How do you undo outlook mail settings on a computer that is not accessible?

Answer»

I had a DESKTOP computer that broke and I am not longer able to use it. I had outlook mail installed on it through aol mail. It seems aol is sending the mail to that computer. I am unable to get mail in my aol account unless I am logged in. How do you undo outlook setting without being able to access computer the settings are installed on so my mail can be accessed from aol. I tryed to find a way by checking setting in aol, but could not figure it out.   If you go to www.aol.com and logon with your credentials you can VIEW your e-mail on the WEB. The only way I can think of being locked out of your e-mail on a REMOTE computer for AOL is if you dont know the password to your aol account in which we CANT HELP you and you will need to contact AOL Support and go through the security reset to change your password and regain access to your e-mail. But you pretty much need to contact AOL Support at this point, we cant help here with that. Sorry  The password is not the issue.  I don't have the computer where the email is being sent? I don't know if that matters or not, but when I log into aol, my mail is not there. I only receive messages if I am logged in. I want to undo the remote mail so it goes to aol, and not to the old computer. The mail isn't being sent to a computer...the mail is being sent to your e-mail account...it doesn't matter which computer you are on...if you are missing mail or some other issue has arrived contact your e-mail provider to sort it out.

Solve : Final and combined number of Windows XP units sold worldwide??

Answer»

Greetings, Forgive me for asking what I felt I would be able to find on my own. I'm having some difficulty with finding a grand and combined total figure for the total number of Windows XP OS units ISSUED (sold) worldwide. A combined figure that includes all TYPES. OEM, HOME, and PRO, versions. The best I can find is a vaugue figure of 400 million, but I' for some reason believe it's higher than that. I believed they ceased production in 2008. If anyone might have a clue, I would be most greatful for your answers and input. This is for an essay I'm writing. Sincere regards- CharlesI'd contact Microsoft and see if they could give you an answer. If you MENTION to them that you are a college student working on a project they might give you the time of day to give you factual information for your project.

MS sells licenses and so they have the best accountability for "legally licensed units" running it. There was a problem about mid life of XP though where someone created bootlegs and a key activation script and distributed this through the black market making even more systems run it with illegal unlicensed OS. This was one of the reasons why they created the Genuine Advantage Tool ... more info here on that: https://support.microsoft.com/kb/892130

Best of luck on your HUNT for info, and if Microsoft gets back to you with real numbers, please report that info back here so someone else may find it on a google search.

Solve : Saying no audio device, drivers are working properly??

Answer»

I have Winxp, all service packs, and Sound Blaster Audigy. I have tried what I am assuming is every solution I have found in short of reinstalling XP. Making sure the right devices are started in services, re-installing/updating drivers, and so on. One thing it probably could be is that there are three ! issues in services, Microsoft kernels (audio splitter, DLS Synth and GS Wavtable) that are duplicates and even though I remove them they still come back. My husband tried to a repair install on windows but could not remove service packs 1 and 2 to do so. Here is my info.

If there is any other info needed I'll try and find it! One oddity I'd like to mention, well two rather. One is that the sound only works when my son played Monkey Quest (?) so I don't know what that is about (I did uninstall it btw for now).  The other is that the only thing that is not greyed out is MIDI music play back devices in that I can open up that list but that is it. anyone home?? Usually if you get the no audio device warning, it means that there are no speakers or headphones attached to the computer.Largest Post of the Month semi-finalist... If you want just delete everything.

Yes there are speakers attached, powered on plugged in the right spot etc.....Did you check your Device manager?  There could be something malfunctioning with the sound card.I'm sure that your audio device run on Windows 7, try to upgrade your operating systemThe Microsoft sound kernals are showing up and I can't uninstall them. Might get window 7 when this one blows up. I need to do a repair install but it won't let me with the service packs which I can not uninstall. When clicking on the sound tray in the bottom right, open the mixer. Make sure all levels are the same. Also click on the device thats outputting sound and check properties to make sure everything is where it should be. I've had this problem before, its gotta be something STUPID.

Solve : Option to take file-ownership missing?

Answer»

In a WinXp/SP3 system that I inherited, I have done my utmost to eradicate all trace of the previous owner - and that

MAY be why I now have a situation where I am denied access to TXT files stored close to the root [two subfolders down

from C:\]. So I cannot READ them, but oddly enough I can run EXE files stored in those same locations. TRYING to take

ownership of them results in needing to take a step I can not take, because the option is missing, NAMELY "Replace

owner on subcontainers and OBJECTS" is MISSING from the Owner's tab of Advanced Security Settings of such an access-

denied file. How can I GET access to reading those text files ?http://www.askvg.com/add-take-ownership-option-in-file-folder-context-menu-in-windows-vista/

Solve : WMPlayer sound distorted.?

Answer»

Hi there.  I'm running XP Pro. Intel Core 2 Quad 2.67 GHz CPU. 3 GB RAM.  ATI 6850 Graphics card. Motherboard is an EVGA 790SL.  I use the Realtek High Definition Digital Audio OUTPUT. When I play .wmv files in Windows Media Player, the sound is distorted.  This doesn't happen with any other media player or any other file format - just that combination.  I can't remember exactly when this started, but I can't shake it.  Any help?  Thank you!You could try downloading and installing VLC from here and give it a try. If it is still distorted then we'll know the problem is not with WMP but something else. Some, or many, users have reported unhappy things with the Windows Media Player on Windows XP. That is why download sites offer older versions of Windows Media Player. There does not seem to be a 'FIX' for the WMP problems, except to use another version or another player.
This link has relevant information.
http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-windows-media-player-replacement.htm
Many like the classic Win Amp.
As I mentioned - I have tried many players... VLC Player is one of them.  It worked FINE.  WMP plays the sound from the .wmv files louder than other formats and louder than the other media players, but even when I take its volume down, the distortion stays the same.  The only reason I make a big DEAL of this is because I'm so used to watching videos on this player.  I just wish I could fix this issue and get on with things.  Thanks again, guys.is it your sound card? It may be when your volume goes down the sound may be damaged so it sounds distorted. No sound card; it's motherboard sound.

Windows Media Player playing .wmv files = distorted.

Windows Media Player playing other fomats= good.

Other media players playing .wmv files = good.

Other media players playing other formats = good.is the sound in your motherboard loose   If it were "loose", it would be "loose" for all players and all formats.Ignore conah 10...You could give this a try.

Please download and run MS Fix-it from here.  I tried the fix.  A few different things were done, but it didn't affect the problem.  Bummer.  Thanks you for your time and effort.Last resort. Un install ALL media players you have ever had.
Then load a recent or current version of  MS WMP.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/download-windows-media-playerI thought about something drastic like that... I'll have to pass. I have uPlayer and it plays the .wmv files faithfully, so I think I'm just going to have to get used to it.

Again - thanks guys.  You have been most helpful and I appreciate your time & effort. Quote from: XtremeD63 on March 08, 2014, 03:43:34 PM

Here is the reason why.  Some players take over a file type and will not let go. So you have two players wanting to open the same file at the same  time. A test for THINS is to either use 'open with' or remove the other player.

I am RUNNING windows xp pro *no idea which SP* About a week ago, I noticed my computer was running super slow, so I ran CCcleaner on it saved the changes to the registry *just encase something went wrong* and went to restart my computer. Windows demands to do an update  I restart the computer to see if that helped fix my lag issue. Now I am locked out of my computer it keeps asking for an admin password which I don't have one. I have always just clicked enter when the empty log in box poped up. Now it is saying that my password and user name are INCORRECT. I have tried everything I can think of to do *a side from BACKING up my hard drive and re-installing the OS* I have tried the hidden backdoor admin account in safe mood *it's gone*, I have tried common factory passwords such as admin, Admin, 1234, and so on, I have even used an xp password reset software. It scans my computer and it says I have no password set      So now I am locked out of my computer by a password that does not exist. I have even tried to do the recovery console on a CD and it to says my password is incorrect. I have tried Last known good config, Also I have no option to do a rollback it seems either. What else can I try to do? A side from backing up and re-installing? Please help I have been needing to access and use the programs *some of which I will not be able to ever use again if I have to re-install* and files on my computer for days now.

Note I am not asking for the password I am asking for what I can do to access my computer againI think that the only thing you can do is to re-install the OS. It's quite possible that the computer is infected. Please follow the directions below and run the scan. You can also use this to access the computer and RECOVER your important files and documents. Don't try to save any programs. Those will have to be re-installed afterwards.

We are going to be using a Windows Recovery Environment to help disinfect the system so it may boot again.

Download the OTLPE Standard REATOGO Windows Recovery Environment.

  • Place a blank CD-R disc in to your CD burning drive.
  • Download OTLPEStd.exe and double-click on it to burn to a CD using an ISO Burner. One can be found here.
  • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.
  • Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
  • Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.
  • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
  • When asked "Do you wish to load the remote registry", select Yes
  • When asked "Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning", select Yes
  • Ensure the box "Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
  • OTL should now start. Change the following settings
  • Change Drivers to Non-Microsoft
  • Press Run Scan to start the scan.
  • When finished, the file will be saved  in drive C:\_OTL\MovedFiles
  • Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet CONNECTION on this system
  • Please post the contents of the OTL.txt file in your reply.

Solve : Icons, words and programs disappear?

Answer»

Hey everyone,

I have had this problem for a few months now.  Basically, after 10+ hours or after leaving my computer in standby mode for an extended period, the words below icons disappear, the start MENU gets smaller and I have to RESTART it to get it back to a functional computer.  Here are a few screen shots as to what I am talking about.
1 - http://i59.tinypic.com/2vrs951.jpg
2 - http://i59.tinypic.com/jsgehe.jpg

I am running Windows XP and this is a WORK computer.  IT will not be able to get to it for a while.  I need this fix ASAP, it is the most annoying problem I have ever had.  Thanks in advance for your help!Have you already read about this?
It is a documented behavior of Windows XP.
Taskbar and Icons disappearing on XP
The article does not explain how this happens.

Here is a video that looks like something similar.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyFaQVhJVkM
Unfortunately, they don't explain why it happens.

Hint. Create a new user account. Copy your settings into the new account, or just set up the new account with your preferences.  Contents of 'My Documents' can be copied over.
You may have a damaged user account profile. The quick fix is a new user account and copy over documents and settings.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151     <= Windows XP

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/fix-corrupted-user-profile#1TC=windows-7

That is my recommendation

 How does this happen? Forest Gump would say;
  'Things Happen.'

Apparently, a damaged user profile is at the binary, machine code level. Windows does not have a automatic feature to correct this. Or, if it did, it failed to catch it. The solution is to make a new account and copy over the vital settings and documents. This is descried by Microsoft, which implies it is common and their is no easier solution.

This may also be time to check your hardware.  Clean out the dust. Check the temps. Replace the battery. Do a disc check. Do a memory test. Run non-destructive drive TESTS.

Solve : Wierdest XP problem?

Answer»

When I try to install XP on any of my 4 computers the same thing happens, it loops after reset into the "gathering system information" as if I had just started the process. It never goes any further than the red Reboot screen??? Anyone  please help.Ahhh... I love these kind of problems.
Somewhere this was documented... but I lost it.
Amway, one solution  is to take a hard drive and initialize it with another kind of program or system.  Like running GPART of a CD. It runs under Linux and can do more things to the hard drive flags.
Or use almost any Linux that runs live off of a CD. They have either GPART or some other drive format program that can make the drive ready for XP.

Sorry I forgot the reason for this. Something about the installer can initialize the hard drive the way it ants for XP.

The drive flag (s)  has to be set to MSDOS, active, boot. The partition has to be primary. Linux can format it in NTFS. But I prefer to format it again with the XP installer. I think the XP installer does  a better format job. Like locking bad sectors. Hard to prove, one can spend hours on a task that never know  why it went right after being wrong n times.

If it is any CONSOLATION. this kind of PROBLEM has been widely reported.

Please stop responding within the quoted text - it's difficult to figure out what you're posting. In fact, it would be easier if you don't quote the previous thread - just type your response in the quick reply box at the bottom of the page. Thank you.Ok, makes sense.
Time Out ....this is happening on 4 different PC's ? ?

No doubt it's the CD.Yeah, I thought the same thing except he said he tried a backup cd too - unless the original was corrupt and the backup was a copy of the corrupt files. It's corruption of the corrupt corruptness....
The OP should provide some more  detail.
Does this happen at the 34 min mark?

Failure of XP to install after 34 min is documented.
The links above suggest an esoteric hardware issue.
It comes from:
 - corrupt HDD or CD-rom drive.
 - install chose wrong hardware drivers.
 - some unknown hardware error.
If the failure comes before 34 min, the CD is bad.

Solve : Windows XP Start Problem?

Answer»
When I turn on my computer it loads the welcome screen and I click the user symbol to log on. It says 'Loading Personal Settings' as usual. Unfortunately, once the settings have LOADED it immediately says 'Saving Settings' and automatically logs off and back onto the Welcome screen. It doesn't allow me to see the desktop so I cannot change any files.

I tried opening windows in Safe Mode, but its the same, so I can't use System Restore. I have also tried loading the Last Know Config. and it is the same thing.

I had recently run my anti-virus then spyware s&d. The S&D
picked up some adware which it removed then prompted for a reboot, which I did, then I hit my problem.

I do have a boot floppys, but not the product CD and key.

Please help?Use the Windows XP CD-ROM as a boot disc and use the Repair console.Ah - but there is the problem. I do not have the XP CD Rom.You will have to obtain one in case you have to format and reinstall an operating system.maybe your trial time have run out...if you dont register with m$oft....30 days after loaded winxp? No. It been running fine for 1yr+. The PC was given to me as-is. Kind of a hand me down. XP was pre-installed by Dell. Will anyones XP Rom work if I can get the key off of the PC?you need the recovery disks that came with the pc really..have you got something at home like norton go back...or any floppys RELATING to your system at all?< an ebd disk>to try to use another disk can be a nightmare...as your pc is looking for the recovery disks...what happens is most makers of pc writes an image to the hard drive...your hard drive reconizes these and read them....if you use another winxp disk...you will have to format your harddrive and then go though the process of getting a product key from msoft to activate it..You most likely had an OEM version of Windows XP installed. I donot think your activation key (should there have been any) will work on another version of Windows XP.info that may or may not help you>http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winntas/maintain/optimize/erd.mspxSo I tracked down the install CD and product key. I ran the Restore and now I get this ERROR.

the following value in the .SIF file used by Setup is corrupted or missing. value 0 on the line in section (source *censored* file). setup can not continue (press F3 to exit set-up)
How to Repair Windows NT System Files Without a CD-ROM Attached

That is what came up when I searched for your problem..Thanks for the info. I actually do have the CD ROM now and am getting a new set of errors when I try doing the restore (see above).

I might just bite the bullet and try a fresh install.

Any feedback?

Might this be an SP2 issue? installed that Service Pack about 2 weeks before the problem.http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Solve : HNow to move large fikles?

Answer»

My main hard drive is getting fuller. What is needed is away to move large files to the external USB hard drive. However, the folder and path name is important. So the external drive must relieve the path name along with the file.
Perhaps XCOPY is the right tool.
But WOULD another tool work better?
Any ideas?

EDIT: None are system files or files in USE. It is from a partition used only for documents, downloads, pictures and videos. You're moving the files. Why is the file path so important? Quote from: SuperDave on February 25, 2014, 03:57:32 PM

You're moving the files. Why is the file path so important?
Well, they maybe duplicate names. Hmmm??
Maybe that should bee move or delete if duplicate.
Is that a way of moving g all files over 200 MB?
Or just files that would be large, like:
.AV, . BAK,  .BMP,  .DAT,  .GIF,  .MP3,  MP4, etc.

Can ROBOCOPY that?

Solve : reboot my pc?

Answer»

Dear SIR. how to reboot my pc please help me
Which "Sir" are you addressing?

On most PC's and with most OS's, when you GO to the normal Shutdown menu, "Restart" is one of the options on that menu.

Or, you can just make a desktop shortcut using this text:

%WINDIR%\System32\shutdown.exe -R -t 00 -f

copy and PASTE that line to a desktop shortcut, because every space is important.

Good Luck,

Solve : XP installation CD doesn't boot?

Answer»

I am trying to reinstall Windows XP on my Dell Optiplex 360. I enter the boot menu and when I choose CD-ROM Drive I get this message:

SELECTED boot device not available. Strike F1 to reboot, F2 for setup UTILITY. Press F5 for onboard diagnostics.

The CD works because it can auto-play when I open it in My Computer.
I don't know if this is relevant but in My Computer the drive is shown as DVD/CD-RW Drive, whereas in the boot menu or boot sequence in System Setup it is shown as Onboard or USB CD-ROM Drive.
What do I do?Which port is the drive plugged into if it is SATA?

If its IDE, I'd try a different CD ROM or DVD Drive if you have one available. Make sure the jumper is set correctly also if its the older IDE type. IDE is easy to identify by the wide ribbon cable if you dont know the difference, while SATA has a cable that is usually about 3/8" wide.

If its a Mixed configuration of both IDE and SATA such as an IDE Optical Drive and SATA HDD you will want the Optical Drive to be the Master in the chain if there is a 2nd drive on it and it is not set to Cable Select. Also in the BIOS set the Boot Order to this IDE Optical Drive first before the SATA or IDE HDD.For reference...
http://www.dell.com/downloads/emea/products/optix/optiplex_brochure_360_en_new.pdf

The OP needs to look at the BIOS options.  But the question becomes 'why did it change?'  Maybe the C MOS battery died. Both the CD drive and the hard disk are SATA. The hard disk is plugged into SATA 0 and the CD drive into SATA 1. Should I still set the CD first in the boot sequence?Yes...
When you set it then press "F10 to save changes and exit"...

The PC will re-boot by itself.
Then you will see a prompt upper screen STATING press any key to boot from CD...
Press any key.

Make sure you have backed up anything important as everything will be gone...That's the normal way to do it. But that doesn't work. It just starts from hard disk normally. What exactly does it say on this XP CD ? ?
Autoplay does NOT mean it's bootable...Just like this but there's one more option: Learn more about the setup process between Install Windows XP and Install Optional Windows Components

What exactly does it say on this XP CD ? ?
Autoplay does NOT mean it's bootable...
So it's not bootable? Do I just click Install Windows XP and it'll do the same thing? Please answer the question above...I already posted the screenshot. Isn't that what you where looking for?NO...

What exactly does it say on the CD itself ? ?
Did someone make this for you ? ?Sorry.
It's blank. A friend of mine gave it to me with a piece of paper with the product code written there. First time I'm using this CD and first time I'm trying to reinstall on this PC.Then it's not bootable...and likely not Legal.

Solve : Installing xp pro?

Answer»

Hi, I searched Google for Xp pro, clicked on a site, gave them my cc# and downloaded it, burned it to a cd and now what? Windows setup wants a key and they did not give me one. Help!

Thanks alotricky1me.....Are you sure its not included in the file you D/l ?   Is the site you purchased XP pro from a reputable site? Can you either Email or phone the company you bought it from and find out where the key is ?
Is it a upgrade or the full version? Have a good look at the files you burned onto the disk ....look to see if there is a wordpad or notepad file there it may contain the product code. Check your Email....they may have emailed it to you. The other question is .......is it a legal copy of XP pro.......

Let us know

dl65  ricky1me....Can you please post the link of where you D/L the program from ........

let us know

dl65 Hi Thank you for your help. Yes the site has a tech support email system and I have emailed them and awaiting a reply.

It is an ISO file. They also give you "nero" burning cd prgm. I am WAITING instructions to get this to work properly.

Thanks for the support. This site you download winxp pro from...did it have the padlock icon?this is a new one on me  and...for msoft to allow such a thing and risky if your connection is lost?..most people go to amazon or a shop to  buy the cdrom install disk? When you burn an ISO file to CD and the software presents a warning about the disk not being closed, ignore the warning and DO NOT allow it to close the disk. An ISO file is a disk image and should work "as is" after being burned.http://www.qualityoemsoft.biz/?campaign_id=21012

This is one just like the one I bought it at.  I now can't find it on google and they are using a tech support url for the questions. Yea, I know it looks like I got taken, but I believe they are legitimate. I have gotten a reply from them and am waiting another. If I copy this ISO file to a partition and choose it to boot from it should just boot? (Using Image for Dos)ricky1me.....Hummmmm , something doesn't smell right with your transaction.

All the software is OEM- Meaning that you don't get the box and the manual with your software. All you will receive is the actual software and your unique registration code.
PLEASE NOTE! YOU'RE NOT BUYING ANY KIND OF SUBSCRIPTION. YOU'RE PURCHASING TANGIBLE GOODS (SOFTWARE) THAT WILL BE DELIVERED TO YOUR DOOR.

If I were you I think I would contact your credit card company.....and let them know that you did not receive what you paid for ...and perhaps get your money back.....
If all you want is a link to D/L the app. there are many available and they include product keys as well .

Let us know how you make out.

Not EXACTLY. You need to burn the .iso image in such a way that the Burning program burns FOLDERS & FILES to the CDR. So you do NOT just copy the .iso image to the CD.

Just choose to burn an ISO image and the Burning program will do that for you.

Then you can look if there is a text file or somesuch on the CD itself OR it might have been made to install WITHOUT entering the Product key as some OEM installations do.

XP CDs are bootable so you just need to change the first boot device to CD-ROM in your BIOS.

If ANYONE want s to check out another site here is one to try http://buyoemsoftware.com/

I just wonder if all of this really IS legitimate.

I don't suppose the site would be on the Internet if it was cheating. No is it a scam...no padlock and the source code...no listing of who wrote it?....: ricky1me follow dl65 advice...and sorry to say you are not alone on this it seems>http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=oemcd%2C+Inc+&btnG=Google+Search&meta=
