Solve : Boot from CD/DVD not working?

Answer»

I want to install a fresh copy of Windows XP over my current XP. In my BIOs, I've set the BOOT priority to CD/DVD then Hard DISK (I don't have a floppy drive). Upon rebooting, it will initialize that it's booting from the CD/DVD drive by saying "Boot from CD/DVD". After 5 - 10 seconds or so, it will just go STRAIGHT into launching my current XP. If I remember correctly, LAST time I did this it brought me to a screen where I have to accept a EULA in order to proceed with the installation. Any way to make it boot from CD/DVD correctly?

My CD/DVD drive is functioning correctly, my Windows XP DVD is clean and readable, and my system is about a year old. When you exit the BIOS are you saving changes?Of course I saved the changes. Thus "Upon rebooting, it will initialize that it's "Boot from CD/DVD" statement".Are you pressing any random key? If your aren't it will just boot into xp. When it says "Boot from CD/DVD" you need to press Enter within a certain time, or it will boot from the next device on the list.
Thank you guys. Without your help, I would've never had figured it out. It seems that I was using a USB keyboard and my computer did not recognize it. So I went and got a PS2 keyboard. That's why whenever I pushed my keys on the USB keyboard, it wasn't working!

Problem Solved. Thanks guys.

Solve : Laptop Will Not Enter Standby Mode?

Answer»

I have a GATEWAY Notebook Model No. MX3228, Intel Celeron M Processor and Windows XP - Home Edition SP2. When I close the display screen to put it in standby mode I get the following message:

"The device driver for the 'Agere SYSTEMS AC'97 Modem' device is preventing the machine from ENTERING standby. Please close all applications and TRY again. If the problem persists, you may need to update this driver.

The driver date is 10/14/2005. The driver version is 2.1.60.5

I CLOSED all apps and tried again to no avail. I used the Windows driver update wizard and it said that I had the lastest version. If anyone has had a similar problem and knows a fix I would appreciate your advice.

Thanks.Re-install your MBoard drivers from the driver CD that shipped with the notebook...

Solve : Windows won't boot?

Answer»

A few days ago, laptop (Medion Akoya EX) was dropped from about 2 feet while on, though not running any specific programs. It worked fine for about 5 minutes afterwards and then froze when I tried to open the My Documents folder. After a forced restart, it entered a boot cycle where it would show the Windows startup SCREEN for about 7 seconds, then flashes a blue error screen and reboots. The same goes for starting with last known good config. When trying to start in safe mode, it lists SEVERAL drivers, freezes on the MUP one, and after 7 seconds again flashes the blue screen and reboots.

The problem is not the RAM jogged loose, and when taken to IT a linux boot disk started fine and was able to read the hard drive. I have no such disk however, and would really like to back up my system before trying to reinstall windows, especially if it turns out SOMETHING is irrevocably DAMAGED. Is there a way I can back up my system when I cannot get into any operating system?

Also, does anyone have any suggestions for exactly what may be wrong, and how to fix it?Grab one of these for about 5 or 10 bucks...

This will allow you to hook up the laptop drive to your desktop and retrieve/burn any data you need.

Re-seating the drive may cure the condition you have with the laptop...i've seen it before,

They are called 2.5" to IDE CONNECTORS available at any reputable computer store...

Solve : How to remove XP Pro from XP Pro/XP Home Edition Dual Boot System?

Answer»

I have accidentally loaded XP Pro onto a computer running an XP Home Edition operating system. Now the system is less efficient and freezes on some GAMES that used to RUN fine.
The hard disk is C:\ and it used to have C:\WINDOWS which contains the Home Edition and now there is also C:\WINDOWS.0 which presumably contains the unwanted XP Pro.
When I try to DELETE the WINDOWS.0 directory, even in "Safe Mode", I get a MESSAGE saying that it cannot delete the file "flash... (something)" file because it is in use and it FAILS to delete the WINDOWS.0 directory.
I want the XP Pro installation to disappear. Can anyone help me please?Double Post

Solve : Windows cannot start-corrupt file?

Answer»

I have a Dell desktop with Windows XP on it and for some reason I tried turning it on today and as it's loading I get a message that says:
"Windows could not start because the FOLLOWING file is MISSING or CORRUPT: /Windows/System32/Config/System"
Then it says I can try repairing it by STARTING windows from the set up CD-ROM. I tried that and nothing different happens I get the same message. I am at college and this is my home computer so I hadn't used it for some months and it was fine last time I used it so no idea what went wrong. Any type of help would be really appreciated.

If I need to give any more info. please let me know.Check here: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307545Thing is, the computer originally had WIndows ME and I put XP on it later on. And now I only have the original Windows ME set up CD-ROM and it won't recognize it or at least it doesn't load it up when I start the computer. I can't even get to the first step they describe in the article.

THanks thoughYou'll need XP CD. I can't see any other way around.Well what do you know I got my hands on an XP CD but again, the computer won't load it up. I keep getting the same error message. Nothing differently happens when the CD is in the computer than when it isn't. I really don't know what to do now.

Edit: Do I have to do something myself when booting up the comp? Safe Mode or something I'm missing somewhere?Ok so I pressed F12 and it gives me options to boot from and I select the IDE CD-ROM device but it just tells me strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility. Does it not recognize that there is a CD in there or am I doing it wrong. Sorry I am so clueless about this. You need to enter BIOS, and make sure CD drive is listed first in boot order.

Solve : WINDOWS XP "Not valid Windows image, check against installation" error?

Answer»

I'm running Windows XP Home Ed.,Ver.5.1(Build 2600.xpsp-sp2_rtm.040803-2158:Service Pack 2), here's what's happening :
1. I get an error message C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls_6595b64144ccf1bf_6.0/2600/2982_x-ww_ac3f9c03\comctl32.dll
Not a valid Windows image. Please check against installation CD.
This happens when I click on the time of day, try to install Windows XP components from the installation CD like "games" or "Explorer", etc.

2. After this happens the previously loaded games that were working have deteriorated to image boxes on the desktop and do not execute wanting me to search for the path to them in the hard disk program files. Sometimes Internet Explorer disappears as well.

Help, Help, does anyone have suggestions. I'm running Kaspersky Anti-Virus as well. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE! Go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...
Have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it.
Let it run to completion, remove the XP CD and re-boot.Glad to hear from someone, but I already did run sfc /scannow and did a restart or reboot not a total shutdown. I'm trying it again hoping to get rid of that nasty image. If this doesn't WORK, should I delete the "comctl32.dll" FILE from my hard drive (C:)?Did the sfc /scannow, but still get error message. Patio, what do you think of deleting the file?SEE Here FirstGot it fixed!!!!! I had to remove a password from a file that had been invaded by a Trojan virus.Good News indeed ! !
And Welcome to CH !

Solve : Hyperactive mouse or hypersensitive system??

Answer»

My machine reacts to everything that I mouse over, such as the shut down COMMAND on the start menu. Also, If I click once to open a program, such as Internet Explorer, it will open a bazillion windows and I'll be unable to close them or do anything else. I am able to use key commands, HOWEVER.

I've swapped out the mouse and I'm still having problems, I know it's nothing to do with the input jack b/c one mouse is USB and the other is multi-pin.

Any recommendations?

Many thanks,
MMHave you gone into the mouse settings in control panel and tried changing the sensitivity settings and whether things are opened by single/double click?

If yes, tell me and I've ANOTHER SUGGESTION, but that would be my first bet in your situation.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Solve : XP Pro not fully functional after system recovery?

Answer»

My original problem was after booting the following error message appeared:

Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

I searched the error message and found an article on Microsoft's Knowledge base (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545) about how to fix a corrupted registry. I went through each step and achieved a point where I am able to logon to Widows and the majority of my settings seem to be correct.

The current problem is that the computer is now running slower than slow. Boot time is very slow. When I start IE it shows in the task manager but the actual window does not open for >2 Min. Other symptoms are funky things with the USB ports. I've got a wireless keyboard and mouse and they both work perfectly. When I plug in my USB wireless network adapter or USB external hard drive the computer again takes >3 min. to recognize they are even there and then attempts to install software (SOMETHING I've never had to do before). Certain applications open with no problem (MS-Word, Ad-Aware, Minesweeper). Applications that are running do not show as running in the taskbar (but they do show as running in task manager).

There is no error message anywhere so I am unsure where to go NEXT. The only other thing I've tried is running an (admittedly outdated) Ad-Aware full scan from safe mode.

After what I thought was a moment of clarity, I might have made the problem a little worse. While looking over some of my files, I saw that I backed up my registry about a year before I had this problem. Thinking I was smart, I exported my current registry, and attempted to import this backup. I got an error:

"Cannot Import C:\......\example.reg: Not all data was successfully written to the registry. Some keys are open by the system or other processes:"

So after I REBOOT with my backed up registry (which I thought was working), XP still takes forever to boot. This time when I boot I get two choices for logon: Administrator (which I don't know the password to, and my standard user). I log into my standard user account and get only a command prompt. Explorer DOES NOT start until I run explorer from the command prompt. Once this is done I am basically back to where I was before (IE taking forever to load, most other programs working fine, nothing showing on the taskbar when something is up and running, etc.). The main difference is that hardware that interfaces using USB (i.e. wireless network adapter and external hard drive) is seen by the computer (on the taskbar I get the option to "Safely remove X"), but they are not really seen by the computer. The external hard drive is not seen in My Computer and the wireless network adapter does not show up in network connections.

Whew! That was a lot. Any HELP would be appreciated, I am basically at a loss as to where to go next. Some more details about my computer: XP Pro SP2 (I do not have the original disk). Thanks for whatever information you can give me.

Solve : I am new?

Answer»

I am new to this and I hope it's helpfull to me and tell me some thing about hardwearsHello hargene and welcome to the CH forum.

First of all, it is nicer for everyone if you POST your topic in the appropriate section. If you have question about hardware you should post in the Computer Hardware section for EXAMPLE. This helps keeping the forum organized and makes sure the right PEOPLE sees your topic.
I suggest you read this post. By FOLLOWING those guidelines you help us help you.

Second of all, I can't figure out if you're asking a question or just introducing yourself. If you're asking a question you will need to be more specific. Asking us to tell you about hardware is too broad a topic for anyone to give a meaningful answer.

Solve : Messed up?

Answer»

I searched for this question but I could not find anything. However if the is a thread about this alerady, I apologise.

I am running Windows Xp Proffesional.
My computer has been seriously messed up. Grapichs LOOK wierd, takes age just to open a new window and so on. I tried to reboot the system but it didint work. Everything works in safe mode however, if that helps. And thats pretty much where my computer knowledge stops. So I would REALLY appreciate if anyone could help me. If safe mode works good i would suggest running a virus scan.

Also may i ask how old the computer is?Around 4 yearsRemove a side panel and see how many dust bunnies you have...
Carefully inspect the fans and heatsinks.
If it looks bad buy a can of compressed air to blow things out.
Use a QTip to hold the fans in place while blasting them to prevent damage to the fans.
When done power up and make sure all fans are OPERATING correctly.

If the symptoms persist then remove the video card , clean the contacts with rubbing alcohol and re-seat it.

As always when working inside the case remove all power sources and take anti-static precautions.

If it's STILL the same after this you will NEED to swap the vid card into another machine to see if the card has gone south.
You may want to hook up a different monitor to your machine as well to make sure it's not the monitor at fault.Get a registry cleaner to clean up your computer. RegSeeker is good. They said that some computer freezing or apps taking long to load may be related to registry errors.

And how much ram are you using? More ram would help if you're sort of low on memory with a lot of resource hungry applications you want to run.

And for your graphics issue. Get a new card and try it out and see if your computer likes it. If not, something's wrong with your computer's innards and you need to check.Cleaning out the registry is actually not good advice at this point...it's a common misnomer that registry issues cause a machine to run poorly.

The best approach is hardware first...then software issues. The registry is way down on the flowchart most instances...

A Good Read...Yes but it's a thing you can do. Maybe not at this step but it's still something that helps. Quote from: elxr06 on March 16, 2008, 11:29:09 PM

Yes but it's a thing you can do. Maybe not at this step but it's still something that helps.

At this point i beg to differ...spend some time reading the article.
But i'm not here to argue...rather find a solution.
It's not in the registry.I would also recommend running a defrag on your disk and run ccleaner.

You just about answered your own question. When you do a restore back to ex-factory CONDITION that's what you get. In ex-factory condition none of your files existed. If you saved files in a folder which was created when your original system was installed then RECREATING that folder during the restore would wipe your files.

Good LUCK.

Solve : Dell Inspiron 3200 Restore Help?

Answer»

I picked up a good working Dell Inspiron 3200. I WANTED to change the OS. It had Win 98 on it. I now know that the 3200 cannot support a newer version of Win so I wanted to restore to how I received it. I deleted Win 98 through the add/delete program. It removed my drivers for cd rom drive. I don't have any disks that may have come with the computer originally. I do have a Win98 disk but cannot reload since the cd rom drive is not reading. Can this be fixed at all even if I can BRING it in to someone to do it? I just need to know if there is any help. ThanksWelcome to the CH forums.

Reset the Bios boot sequence to boot from the cdrom first, insert your Win.98 cd and it should start the Setup program.

Good luck

Solve : [SOLVED with Dial-a-fix] Microsoft Windows Update Fails?

Answer»

Hi,

I recently fixed some trouble with my computer with your help - and I think my drive might be failing - seatools does not detect it, but it boots into windows and I am not having any trouble with it.

Here's what I did to fix a critical error I was receiving, upon Patio's recommendation I think - Used the Windows CD to repair Windows to fix a critical error with the Login services.

So:

1. Repaired Windows with the Windows CD.
2. Windows Update now fails to update anything.

When I tried a manual update of one of them, Windows Installer 3.1, I get an "Access Denied Error"

Any suggestions on fixing windows update?

Yes I did.

I was not able to install the ones mentioned, however I was able to install Windows Update Installer 3.1, which I couldn't before.

Solve : Windows, ProgramFiles, and Documents an Settings locked on network?

Answer»

Hi I have a small problem,
I have a 10 mbps Ethernet home network with 3 computers on it 2 Windows XP and
1 Windows 98. I can get into the windows folder on the Windows 98 though the XP's
but not vise versa.
Both the XP's are Windows XP Home Edition The other is Windows 98 Se.
Any clue as to how I can get in to those folders on the Windows XP from the Windows 98?If the XP machine is running on the NTFS file system Win98 cannot see it...
To check this right click the PARTITION / drive with XP and select properties in Disk Management.no, its ntfs and I can see the files and access every thing but Windows, Program Files, and Documents and Settings. When I click on them It says "The folder is not accessible Access is denied" how can I get rid of that message?
Re-read my post...Win98 cannot read from an NTFS partition...it will not be able to see anything on the XP drive/partition.
The only solution to this is to convert the XP partition/drive to FAT32 and you may not be able to do this without wiping the XP install...converting the drive/partition and re-installing XP and all your programs.
On top of that you will take a performance hit in doing so...But the drive is not directly HOOKED up to the win98 its in a different computer and hooked up though a network and when I go to Network Neighborhood on the win98 desktop I click on the XP
computer then Drive C: (witch is shared on the XP computer and allows full access) all the files and folders come up exactly the same as it is on My Computer on the XP, I can open some folders I even installed some programs from the XP to the win98 through the network I PROMES . Its only 3 folders that when I click on them it says Access Denied. Now my real question is how can I let the win98 OR the other XP in to those 3 folders?? Any Ideas Back up the XP install.
Format the XP drive and FDisk it as FAT32.
Re-install.

I'm not sure what part of Win98 won't read an NTFS partition you don't understand.
It has nothing to do with PRIVILEDGES...OK! srry forget I even said theres a win98, BUT there is 2 XP's and when one of them try's to access the other's Windows and Program Files folders It said "Access Denied" But every thing else works fine sounds just like the win98 doesn't it?? Is there a way to let the computers access those folders, is this info CLASSIFIED so you wont tell me, or is it simply impossible?? Now that the circumstances have changed and it's XP to XP the dilemna is CLEAR as mud...
What folder is this ?
Is it on a Network shared drive ?
If so is there any security settings on this network setup ?

If no to the above questions See Here...

P.S. Being snippy when asking for assistance won't get you far. Nothing we do here is "classified"...srry...

Solve : I need some help from my new firends?

Answer»

I downloaded some security UPDATES, from Microsoft Download Center, last night. I left the computer on and went to bed. This morning I tried to boot it up and it gets into the Windows XP Screen and then shuts down for a second, reboots wit the HO Invent window, onto the Windows XP Xcreen and then keeps doing it.

I tried starting it up in safe-mode and at one point I got the following message:

STOP: c0000139 entry point GdiGetBitmapBitsSize could not be located in the dynamic Link Library GDI32.dll.

This is an older HP Computer that I had CONVERTED to run Windows XP after it died with Windows ME. I had the hard-drive replaced when this was done. It was running fine prior to me DOWNLOADING the security patches, etc.

Hope you can help.

Thanks to all.....BUCKEYE (Jim)You may have corrupt, or incorrect VERSION of GDI32.dll
Find GDI32.dll on your computer, right click on it, click Properties, then Version tab, and post back.
Do you have SP2 installed?

Solve : Word Pad?

Answer»

No it doesn't work. In FACT Idon't want to open the file just the folder to extract the file. I tried going into the CONTROL Panel-Folder Options-File Types-SGN-Change but the only change I can make is to open the file by another means. I tried to change it to WinZip to open but it reverts back to WordPad. I also tried to do the shiftkey/right click - properties-change and that didn't work either for the same reason.Dload or have someone SEND you a zip file.
Locate that file and change it's association to Open With WinZip and see if this corrects things...

By the way are any of your other file associations screwed up that you know of ? ?

The other option would be to DLoad and install 7Zip and see if it handles the file PROPERLY...it's Free and if it does the same thing that means the file you are dealing with is corrupt and or UNREADABLE...At the moment I do not seem to be having any problem with any other files. I wondered about downloading the WinRar program to try it.WinRar may not be Free...7Zip is.Thanks. I will give it a try

Solve : Can't boot Windows XP, locks up, can't safe mode?

Answer»

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have desktop pc with windows XP sp2 and I'm having trouble getting to the login screen. First let me say that I have rudementary knowledge, and by saying that I mean that you will really need to explain things like you are talking to a child. I have just enough tech know-how to really get myself into trouble.

SO I tried to login today and my pc locked up. I did a power down and upon restart it stayed on the Windows XP screen endlessly, so I powered down again. This time I got to the screen where it said that something WENT wrong and I needed to choose to either enter safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, start form last working config or start windows as normal.

None of these work. If I do as normal, I'm back at the endless Windows XP screen. If I try any of the others I get a full screen of this:

multi(6)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\windows32\drivers..... After the .... there's many different options on the screen, lots of different things but all have that text proceeding it.

I can't get to a command prompt to type in some of the things I've seen I need to try from various searches. I can't get to a safe mode to anything that way. I can't get to a login in any way shape or form.

So...my next step was booting from the windows disc. I tried this, and nothing happens at all. It's not reading the disc at all, so it's not sending me to a screen where I have a choice to reinstall windows or REPAIR, etc.

I'm not sure what other info you might need but PLEASE be detailed and handle me with kid gloves. Alot of things you might SUGGEST I might not fully understand so please be plain and specific and give me step by step directions.

MUCH Appreciated!!!!!All that text is Windows loading it's files in safemode...you have to be patient and let it finish loading.
On some machines if it hasn't been run in awhile it can take up to 7 or 8 minutes.I let it run for 30 min though, no CHANGES, same when I tried the other options and it sent me to the WIndowsXP logo screen and it just hung there. I've gone into safe mode before, never saw that text, nor the delay.

Here are my specs btw (this is a gaming rig, custom built, and runnign XP SP2 Home).

AMD Athlon 64 FX-62 Windsor 2.8GHz Socket AM2 125W Dual-Core Processor Model ADAFX62CSBOX
ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard
SAMSUNG SpinPoint T Series HD400LJ 400GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
SONY 16X DVD±R DVD Burner With 5X DVD-RAM Write Black IDE Model DRU120C
EVGA 640-P2-N821-AR GeForce 8800GTS 640MB 320-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP
CORSAIR XMS2 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 675 (PC2 5400) Desktop Memory Model CM2X1024-5400C4 When loading safe mode, what is the last line of text displayed before XP stops loading?I'll check as soon as I get back to work and try the various options and give specifics. I don't remember though anything other than the full screen of text that I noted in my original post. The only other method I saw was it went to the WindowsXP loading screen (with the scrolling lines, that appears right before the login screen) and that just stays there endlessly too. I have NOT seen any error messages or a blue screen of any kind. The only thing I see now is initially it goes to the screen that tells me that something went wrong last time, and it gives the safe mode options, launch from last working config and as normal, so if that's what you are referring to, that's all I see. Otherwise, no blue screen or error codes, save the text I posted.

THX againI got into the BIOS, changed the order of the boot to optical first instead of HDD, and then tried to do a recovery with the disc. I typed R for repair and it sent me to a the recovery screen but ONLY gave me an option to type exit and restart, at which point I loaded to the screen that had safe mode and last working config options. I tried the config and now I'm on the eternal windows xp screen again. What did I do wrong. ?Ok tried this again and got to the point when I'm supposed to click Repair but instead there's a step ahead of it. It gives me the option to choose between 2 partitions I have. One is very tiny, only 8 mb. The other is huge. The only option from here is the install and I'm worried that this will overwrite and do a real install. I don't get a repair option like the steps suggest. What do do???

I tried to click enter for install but I got a warning that it will kill anything on that partition. I've never done a partition of any kind, so I'm baffled here anyway, but the next step for repairing isn't here, it takes me right to choosing a partition and then install, no repair
Choose the larger of the 2.
Using the repair option should bring up what's called the Recovery Console...which is a command prompt type window.
Type in fixboot and hit Enter.
Remove the XP CD and re-boot.
If it boots properly you have fixed your problem.

If it does not repeat the above procedure and once in the Recovery Console type in fixmbr and hit Enter....again remove the XP CD and re-boot.I was able to boot up and get to the repair with the XP cd inserted. I went through that process and then upon reboot, it tried to chkdsk, and kept getting hung up (which I imagine isn't good).

I then tried to bypass this phase and it did get me to a login. However, I locked up after some sluggish time trying to get SP2 back. I couldn't get to windows update and when I tried to run my virus scan, I saw it picked up some suspicious detections (I really don't think that is a major flag, I'm thinking actualy something to do with my HDD is the issue, but you never know). It locked up and I couldn't do anything. At this point I'm thinking of trying to retrieve the data from the HDD and just doing a clean install.

My problem here is, I don't know HOW to slave this drive to my alt pc (my wife's), never done it, and additionally, even if I did and I got the data transfered, if there ARE any viruses, won't I then corrupt her pc?

If you have access to the drive through ANOTHER means, you may be able to just REPLACE the missing file, you can download it here.

http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?halHow can hal.dll be a download since it is unique to each machine ? ?
Someone please clue me in if i'm WRONG here...MotherShip KB here..

Good luck.I UNDERSTAND...but it says nothing about DLoading a hal.dll...Lots of download sites here..

My understanding is that once a 'fresh' Hal.dll is copied to System32 and the system rebooted some drivers will have to be reinstalled.

Also understand that Hal can be extracted from an install cd and, believe it or not, copied from one system disk to another. See the link in Soybean's reply #3.

Solve : motherboard driver installation problem?

Answer»

after formatting my window XP SP2, when i want to install my motherboard driver, a massage poped up "D:\ is not a valid 32 application". my motherboard is MSI865PE NEO2, my prosser is P4 2.66G with 2 pieces of 512MB kingston DDR RAM. PLEASE help. How are you trying to install these drivers and where are they from ? ?After installing OS, I inserted the Motherboard CD-Rom which came with the product. It did not auto-run and the message popped up. This has never happened before. Then I went to the MSI website to download the bios live update program. When I ran the PROGRAMME, a message "this program is not a valid 32 application" popped up again. Please help, thanks!I'm at my other machine right now and don't have my MSI MBoard CD here...
I'll get back to you as soon as i can.
Is there a setup.exe on the CD ? ?

I would hold off on running the Live Update for now as 1) you may not need it and 2) it has had some issues lately...Hi, this is the message i got when i inserted the CD to see if there is a setup.exe on the CD:
"vsmon.exe- Application error
The instruction at "0x7c901010" referenced memory at "0x0176f60c". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program"

thanks!OK this is starting to sound like more of a Windows issue here...
Is your XP SP2 CD legit ? ?
Is EVERYTHING else running properly ? ?

I just called a Customer who i did a build for with the same MBoard. He looked at the CD and provided the info i needed.
You should be able to open Windows Explorer and navigate to the CD.
There will be a setup.exe LISTED at the bottom...just double clik it and the CD will load.
There will be a driver button on the screen ALONG with MSI Ifo; Browse the CD; Options etc.....click on the Driver button and it should run the setup process for the MBoard drivers.
If this procedure does not work for you i'm afraid there is a problem with your XP install...

Let us know...

P.S. You may want to check the MBoard manual...if i remember correctly that board takes DDR2 RAM and you may have the wrong RAM installed.I have been busy these few days and is not free to visit this forum. My windows is legit and one of my sata HD is not functioning in this motherboard and I had tried all of the comments, and it did not work. So i have changed the motherboard and it is working now. Thanks for all your help.Good to hear you got it working...so both SATA drives are up and running now ? ?Hi there, yup they are finally working now! thanks loads for all your help! You're more than Welcome...stop by anytime !

Solve : Temporary Internet Files folder size?

Answer»

I need to free space on my drive. Temporary Internet Files (located at Documents & Settings/Username/LOCAL Settings, when I right click and view properties, states that it is 497MB, containing 4548 files and 9 folders. However, when I open the folder, it is empty. I already chose Delete Temp Internet Files in Internet Explorer and FIREFOX. I can view hidden files and folders (obviously otherwise I wouldn't see Local Settings). Why is temporary internet files telling my it is 497MB big when there is nothing in it? I am in an ADMIN account. It is the same under my username and default user. How do I get this 497mb back into free space?Run diskclean and DEFRAG from Start/Accessories/System Tools.

Solve : CPU Usage 2?

Answer»

Yes, GOOD JOB of discovery there. Perhaps heat was affecting your processor.

BTW, did you look at the fins on the heatsink under the processor fan? They can also get clogged with dust. You can loosen it with a TOOTHPICK or paper clip. A can of compressed air can also be used to blow out loosened debris from the heatsink. Depending on your specific hardware, you may able to remove the fan without removing the heatsink from the processor; this would be done be removing four screws holding the fan to the heatsink. That would make cleaning the heatsink much easier.

If you actually remove the heatsink, you'll need to remove the old thermal gel/paste between the heatsink (the bottom of it) and the processor and APPLY new thermal paste before reinstalling the heatsink and fan.To add to SOYBEANS excellent instructions i also use a QTip to hold any fan blades in place when blasting with compressed air to prevent damaging the fans.

Solve : Microsoft updates will not install?

I have Windows XP on my system and I can't GET Microsoft updates to install. They download, but will not install. I would also like to know how to remove downloaded updates that will not install. They are not listed in add/remove on the control panel. Quote from: dacetwin2 on April 05, 2008, 07:21:59 AM

They download, but will not install.

Do "they" say anything? Please include the "exact" text and/or numbers of any ERROR messages that result from the install failure?I'm really thinking I'm having registry problems and I think I will get me some software and try that. The only error message I get is when I try to get into the control panel and it says "windows\system32\netsetup\cpl." I get all my other updates, except Windows. What is the item that won't install from Windows Update?Quote
The only error message I get is when I try to get into the control panel and it says "windows\system32\netsetup\cpl."
I'll bet you $5, it says more, then that.I'll kick in another $5.00....I'll bet more than $5 that the only error message I get is the one I mentioned. Nothing installs from Microsoft. Quote

1. I'm going to assume (going out on a limb...) there are two SEPARATE problems:
o windows\system32\netsetup\cpl
o Windows Update

2. Windows XP (Edition and Service Pack Level). Home Edition or Professional? Original, Service Pack1 (SP1), SP2, or SP3?

To find out:
Left click on "Start"; hunt for "My Computer"- it's somewhere close; right click on "My Computer"; left click on "General" tab. Should be listed on that tab window somewhere.

3. windows\system32\netsetup\cpl.

If Windows XP SP2, then see here for 'You receive an "Error occurred while Windows was working with the Control Panel file" error message when you open Control Panel in Windows XP SP2'.

4. Windows Update Failure. Is it possible your system is configured to automatically download but not install the updates? See How to configure and use Automatic Updates in Windows XP.

Or the user friendly version:
Automatic Update for Windows XP

5. Remove Downloaded Updates. This is uncharted territory for me, so you probably should do some READING or get some confirmation that this is what you want to do before you start operating on your system. A working system is probably better than a broken one.
How to delete downloaded but uninstalled update.
can't stop an update download, please helpThanks, dahlarbear, you helped me out. You gave me the information I was looking for. My error message was only one line that stated windows\system32\netsetup\cpl. I'm sorry they lost their $10.

Solve : PC Won't Boot Up...?

Answer»

I have a problem with my Dell Latitude CPt laptop Windows 2000 Pro on docking station and Ehernet LAN.

While trying to get my laptop to talk to my host Dell Dimension 4500 Windows XP Home Edition via my home Ethernet LAN I inadvertently did something that caused the laptop to reboot, but it didn't reboot normally or back to Windows. It booted to a black DOS screen with the following information: "Primary hard disk drive 0 (zero) not found. No boot device available. No bootable devices-Strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility."

F1 only brings the same information back up and F2 brings basic setup information. When I tried to exit (ESC) from the F2 screen nothing happens. My key board letters are not working. I can't type in escape or C:, or anything else.

How can I get back to a point that I can boot up to Windows?

Thanks in advance...

Al @ [emailprotected]

EMail addy removed to prevent Spam. You can try powering down and disconnecting from the docking station temporarily.
Plug in the laptop through it's normal power AC cord and try to boot it.
If it boots normally than something just got dislodged with the docking station.
If this works then power down the laptop and re-connect to the dock to see if it works. Thanks for replying!

I shut it down several times. I then shut it down and dedocked it and pulled the battery. When I started it it stopped at the same DOS screen.

Anything else I can try?

Thanks,
Al

F2 brings you your setup information.

Have you reviewed your setup just to make sure everything is all right? Thanks Aegis!

I hadn't gone over the detail with an eagle eye, but your are CORRECT the Primary Hard Drive reads None.

What should I put in there for a Dell Latitude CPt w/Windows 2000 Professional?

When I try to move the CURSOR down beyond the date I can't seem to get it to go down using the instructions at the bottom of the page. What gives or do I change the 'None' someplace else?

Thanks,

It is still a BETA...

Also, forum policy. SP3 has not been released, therefore you have a pirated copy of it. Please don't ask for assistance on it here. You're JUMPING the gun here quaxo...there are BETA releases out there....this doesn't mean pirated.Hi guys mine was beta and it actually took me a long time to get back on because I had to find all of my install CDs from storage.

SP3 is now on my new machine and all of my old ones it is faster and better and I can tell because I actually get better frame rates in GTA than before used to be 18-22 and now on the same machine with SP3 is getting 22-24 and it spends most of the time at 24.

For the machine that wasn’t working that I can play GTA on; I simply found the install CDs and did a recovery I uninstalled the update and tried again and it worked fine. Honestly I just barreled through and am not quite sure what I did exactly.

One machine was never recovered (too old to mess with). I just went out and got new to me computer. It turned out to be a HEAVILY used store model from COMPUSA that recently went out of business>>> Let me tell I got RIPPED OFF BIG TIME

Don’t read on if you don’t care about the PC I got it has SP3 on it but I don’t know how it ran before, so the following adds nothing to the original content:

This PC has been on 24/7 except power outages from 2002 until early March 2008 at which time it was taken out of service to be sold as store furniture but before it was sold the employees took all of the goodies.

The P4 was switched from 3.4 gHz to a 2.4 gHz. Memory was exchanged for some that didn’t EVEN work.

I think the HD was original it was amazing I was able to turn on this computer because the HD literally bounced when running; while changing cases I set it on the table to see it jump at times as high as an inch!!!

And it only gets better the MSI (I think to be good) is detecting problems while running it will say my voltage which is supposed to be a 12V is at 1.94V sometimes mostly around 11.98~~~V I don’t know anything about it but it looks bad! LOL

All is good though don’t worry.

Thanks guys

Solve : Only works on Safe Mode?

Answer»

Hi

My computer has just randomly stop working.

I turn it on and i can get up to the bit were it ''should'' say 'Windows is staring up'

but it doesn't say 'windows is starting up' its just black

The computer still makes the sounds it makes when it turns on but the screen is just black

By sounds i mean the fans and the weird staring up sound u get on computers not the windows chimes sound from the speakers

However i can get my computer to work fine in Safe Mode, but not the one with the command panel option (that one just gets stuck on the 'windows is starting up' screen)

I've restored my computer to a week ago, when it was working fine, and I've done a virus and anti-spy ware scan with zone ALARMS internet suite. no viruses.

I can't connect to the internet because safe mode doesn't let my wireless network USB thing be on.

I have a recently (about 3 weeks) installed Motherboard 'Bio Star PT890 775 SE'
Intel core 2 duo e6600 (installed with the motherboard same day) and I'm currently running a NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT graphics card. 1gb of ram

I had a professional install my motherboard + processor, so i don't think its the installing.

Can anyone help me.

I also have this external Hard drive, which doesn't work any more, I put it on another computer and the computer installs it but.. it won't open it (My Computer crashes). When ever the external hard drive is in on The broken computer it slows the computer down and nothing OPENS (only now that its broken it worked fine before the computer broke)

The only problem is that I need that external hard drive because i have installed some programmes to it

But i managed to get zone alarm to scan the external hard drive, and there weren't any viruses.

Can anyone help please thanksIf it helps

I have Windows XP Home edition Did you reinstall Windows after you installed the hardware?
If not, that's the reason your computer isn't booting.
Windows is not designed to handle major hardware changes.Yep, i did

the computer has been working fine for the LAST couple of weeks

Only stop working Yesterday (7th APRIL)

I just remembered, on the day it all worked fine, the computer loaded, but was being slow so I pressed 'ctrl alt delete' and the task manger crash, so i moved it around, and it duplicated it's self and took over the screen.

I couldn't turn it of normally so i held the button down, until it turned off. Counted to 10 and then my computer hasn't worked since

PS, all safe modes work now so IGNORE "but not the one with the command panel option"(And its not command panel it should say 'command Prompt')Woooohoooo's

I installed Registry Mechanic, and ran it.
http://www.pctools.com/registry-mechanic/
I had to restart my computer, and just like that it worked

I fixed my computer

You should backup your system right now if everything is running correctly...
This is the first time i've heard that RM actually worked.

There are 4 parameter values associated with this STOP code, and these
can provide further information about the CAUSE of the error.

If, for example, the second parameter value is C000017D then the cause
is STATUS_NO_LOG_SPACE INDICATING a full or perhaps corrupted hard
drive. If the parameter 2 value is different then there is a
different cause.

MS KB is here.

I have looked everywhere and asked everyone I know and I can't get any answers.

I have Windows XP and when I open a file with anything I get a bunch of jibberish. I have some files I need to use but when I open I see no words just weird symbols and squares. I was told it is encryption or unicode. How do I get it back to English. I didn't do this. What I had at first was something I could read now it is "all Greek to me".Do you share this machine with someone else? How long has this been like that?

What are they..? They have never been on my computer before. Ive never seen anything like this. They are under local disc. The folders name is CONTACTS, when I double click it my email address is in it many times, which I have never seen before in the computer. There are files WITHIN it and I don't understand. When I try to open it to see what it is I can't read it. I did a virus scan on the file and it is clear.

I didn't want to open in notepad, I chose that because I thought it would open so I can read it.It sounds like something to do with your email. It might be normal. Perhaps if you gave us the proper folder name we could decide.

Solve : Windows date is wrong and cannot use System Restore Virus??

Answer»

I recently downloaded a copy of MagicISO and before I installed I created a restore point. I also downloaded a Dell Driver Update at the same time. The Dell update apparently ACTIVATED my Microsoft Office free trial that I have never used and so I decided to use System Restore. Well, my computer clock and date has now started over at JAN. 1 2009 and I have no restore points previously. They are all gone! In fact I can't get System Restore to even look BACK beyond Jan. 1 2009! I changed the windows date to April 2 ( the install was done on March 31 and April 1) and now System restore will load up as April 2, 2008 but will not GO back in time any further. If I try to change the date system restore automatically goes to Jan. 1, 2009.

Dell Dimension C521 A64 3200 512mb XPTry using your right hand key on the time shown in the lower right corner of the screen and from the popup select adjust "date & time"Thanks for your reply. That is how I changed the date so that System restore would think it was the correct date and not Jan of 2009. However, there are no restore points. Thay are all missing and if I try to look at ANOTHER date in system restore it automatically goes Jan. 2009, even if I am looking at April 2008 and want to look at March 2008.
Any ideas?See, if your clock is set correctly in BIOS.

Solve : question about Broadcom Windows driver exploit?

Answer»

I have a WIRELESS B adapter for my laptop but I was thinking of getting a wireless G card since my router is wireless G and I wanted to use the upgraded security features that were not compatible with the wireless B card.

However, I then found this article:
http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/?p=365

that talked about some problem that would affect some of the wireless cards.
http://kernelfun.blogspot.com/2006/11/mokb-11-11-2006-broadcom-wireless.html

I found out about it when checking out the page for the model I was thinking of buying (Linksys model WPC54G) and someone said this problem affected that model card.

I was also considering Linksys model WPC54GX4. How could I tell if this issue would affect that model card? If that model is not affected then I would rather get that one instead.

Thanks!

The articles are almost 1.5 years old.
Linksys has most likely released a NEWER driver by now.
Best way to find out is to go to Linksys webpage and check how old the current driver is for the card in question.
If you can find a change log you may also be able to see when the bug was fixed.Linksys makes some of the best wireless cards.
As stated you're READING info that's almost 2 years old...YES, I know it was an older article. I was wanting to buy the adapter as second-hand (used) on eBay so I assumed that the software driver included with it would have been one from that time period in which the article was written.
I wouldn't buy anything to do with networking from eBay especially wireless...
Others may have some success with this but that's just my opinion.
Too fragile to not have a warranty to fall back on.

Solve : Swap file?

Answer»

I have gone from Win 3.1 to Win95 to Win98 to WinXP .

In my Win95 days when one defragged, it was considered good practice to copy one's 386 swap file to ANOTHER hard drive (if one had one), defrag the C: drive, and then move the swapfile back. Is there any point at all in considering how to defrag a swap file in Win XP, since swapfiles are probably much LARGER than they used to be?

benhar

The only way to defrag the swap (aka page) file in XP is to do it before XP loads in what is called offline mode. Making a copy of it on another drive will do nothing, since the original will still be PRESENT and locked (and therefore impossible to defrag) in its original location.
The standard XP defragmentation TOOL can't do an offline defrag.
But Sysinternals/Microsoft have made a free tool available that can.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897426.aspx

Or try a 3rd party defraging tool like UltraDefrag.

EDIT:
Btw. another good (as in a lot better than XPs own defragger), free and often recommended 3rd party defragger is JKdefrag. It just doesn't have an off-line mode. But you can USE it and PageDefrag as a pair for online/offline defragging. Thanks very much, Deerpark, I'll have a look at the sites you posted. I knew there must be a way.

benhar

You're very welcome and happy defragging.

Solve : "REGVAC" Caused all drivers and programs to become unaccessible. Please help!?

Answer»

I used the PROGRAM Regvac to CLEAN my computer earlier today.
After using it I found that I couldn't access anything on my computer. If I tried to use a program such as paint, or even if I tried to use the system restore, it said that the file could not be found.
If i tried to redownload any of the files, it would say that "exe" is not a recognized file type.
How can I fix this problem? What operating system, please?Windows XP Professional Edition
I've tried reinstalling it, but it won't run.I can't even access the volume control.
Whenever I try to open a program, it opens as a NOTEPAD file.
The only thing that PHYSICALLY will run without a problem is the internet. It 's always good idea to ask around before using some programs, especially, if they deal with system files.
Try XP Repair install: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm#RINot familiar with this app so i visited their website... you can't judge a product from a webpage however.....
At least it is not listed as a rogue app.

A good reg program will create backups before changing anything.
Have you checked the RegVac help file to see if this is the case ? ?

Solve : Ugh Deleted usb enhanced host controller--can't use mouse/keyboard?

Answer»

The "usb enhanced host controller" was deleted from the Device Manager in Windows XP.

Now, the computer will boot up normally, but I can't use my keyboard or mouse once Windows opens. I use a USB keyboard and mouse because my old PS/2 slot quit working.

I can enter BIOS by hitting the F8 before Windows opens, but beyond that I don't know what to do.

I have a copy of the Windows XP disk that was given to me from the shop that sold me the computer. It is not "genuine".

I suspect there is a simple way to undo what I've done, but I don't know what it is.

Any help is appreciated?

THANKS,

JNull1. Computer Specs. If a brand name computer, please supply "Make" and "Model Number", otherwise the make and model number of the motherboard (if possible). Also desktop or mobile (notebook, laptop)?

2. Operating System. Windows XP what? Home Edition, PROFESSIONAL? Original, Service Pack 1 (SP1), SP2, SP3?

3. Can you use the keyboard while in CMOS setup (to configure the BIOS)?

4. How many PS/2 ports are on the computer case?Hi. I'm travelling, so I can only give you some of the details. I'll tell you what I can for now.

It is a generic desktop computer with Windows XP Professional, SP2 and I do run automatic updates.

I do not know the make or model of the motherboard.

I was able to use the keyboard in BIOS.

There are 2 SP/2 ports on the back, but neither seem to work. (I've tried with 2 different SP/2 keyboards.) I have been using a PS/2 to USB adaptor to run my keyboard for the last year or so.

Thank you.Even if that controller was accidentally deleted it is automatically reinstalled on a re-boot of Windows...
However some generic Windows drivers don't fit the bill always so re-install your MBoard drivers and re-boot...Will do.

Is there any risk of losing data on the computer when I reload MBoard drivers?

(BETTER safe than sorry, which is why I'm asking.)

Thanks.Shouldn't be...but it's a good reason to examine what backup strategy you currently have in place.

Solve : Booting From CD Fails?

Answer»

I have a hard time installing these things :

Win98 SE

WinXP Pro

They are both bootable as I KNOW and I got this system :

ASUS A7N8X MicroATX
AMD Athlon XP 2800+
Sapphire x1650 PRO 512 MB
Maxtor 80 GB
Western Digital 320 GB
Creative SoundBlaster X-fi eXtreme Gamer Low Profile

Startup :

1. Show some info and a HP logo

2. Check: CD 1/2, Floppy, HDD 1/2

3. Loading XP

4. Loading DESKTOP (here it fails to go further)

Only way to get the PC to read from CD is to force it by pressing ESC when the HP logo shows or make the Maxtor drive not bootable in BIOS

When I force it to read from CD it says:

Insert PROPER Boot Device Or Revome Portable Medias

I have also tryed with the CD Drive as 1:st Media to boot from

But nothing i have done seems to help

What can I do ?

I will also try this :

1. Install XP on the 320 GB Drive with another PC
2. Move the 320 GB Drive back to my REGULAR PC
