Solve : Kill Explorer? |
|
Answer» Death to the foul Windows Process! Death I Say! Why do you say that windows explorer hogs ressources? What windows do you use? What computer do you have? (processor, memory, free hard disk space). Win ME,500MHz Intel 2,~96MB RAM (it's suppose to be 100,but on the side of the cpu says 96...on screen says 92.0...so I guess it's near 96),9gig hdd with about 2.62gb free The reason I'm picky about explorer is simply if I open nearly any other program (be it spybot search & Destroy to scan for baddies...which makes the pc the most sluggish...or be it a small program like notepad for writing...explorer seems to be a useless spare wheel in the way of crashing me now before you say "go run out and get a different os or download linux or format or buy a new computer" let me just say I'm happy with what I got...EXCEPT for the nasty part of windows known as explorer, also I've found Spybot to work 46% smoother after going in to it,and the process list, and "killing" explorer so viking...in answer to my original question...and/or last two posts,is there any way to kill explorer...perhaps druging it so it dies until I reboot the next time or something?PS: forgot to mention it's a HP PavilionI know no way to work with Windows without Explorer. I maintain my affirmation that Explorer is very IMPORTANT to Windows and any application you use in Windows (it offers services). Maybe I am wrong, but I never heard of a computer with Windows without Explorer (from Windows 95). And... No way to "kill" him and after that expect Windows to work (or any application). I would use Windows 98 on your computer... But you already have Windows Me. I'm sorry, I don't know to help you The only way you "kill" processes in Windows is with the classic three-finger-salute: [CTRL]+[Alt]+[Del] As has been correctly and aptly mentioned by viking, Explorer is the vital part of Windows (as is SysTray). Specifically, Explorer is the shell, the part of an Operating System that defines the way it looks (amongst other things). It is, in effect, Windows itself. Nearly all applications also rely on the shell for their looks (which is why many Windows apps look very similar - it's by design rather than accident). So no, you cannot kill this and still expect Windows to work properly. You'll find that if you try to close Explorer you'll get the Shutdown dialog box appearing. Quote The only way you "kill" processes in Windows is with the classic three-finger-salute: [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Del] LIAR! Thoust CAN Kill Explorer as I had noted above. The Main Purpose of this was if there was a hotkey way (such as Alt+E+3 = kill explorer,Ctrl+E+R=revive explorer),or perhaps another program that could do the job of killing explorer and remaning open (OTHER then ye ole ms deprocessor of [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Delete]. Simply, what I am doing now is loading up the computer with the least amount of things needed (done in Start>Run>MSCONFIG>Startup Vars) OR The Startup Selections in the Spybot Search & Destroy Menus. This Post Brought to you by... Spybot Search & Destroy ~Spybot Search & Destroy, one heck of a spyware scanner and nice all around helper app too! Get Your Copy Today!~ Now then, there's also the Process List-list in the SAME program,NORMALLY what I do is load up only the most needed things (HidServ,Systray, and My AntiVirus and/or Firewall...which like to run all the time anyhow...or disable it if I have offline plans such as running compression tests, archiving, doing something that takes up alot of resources...or isn't done online) anyhow after my selective startup starts up,I have spybot s&d open,I goto process list>I click on explorer.exe,I hit Kill,I use Alt+Tab and select a program I'm using instead (such as those compression tests I mentioned above,7-zip runs alot better without explorer then with),I've even found in some cases this adds aprox. 20% in the system resources free (I have a shortcut set so I can check system properties WITH or Without explorer) So guys, you still think Windows can run without explorer.exe? That te Microsoft turtle can shed and still have skin? Or did you think I simply wanted to do say ">del explorer, run windows" (as much I wish,I can't exactly do that...but make best with my alternative methoid) Thy answer me or face an awful itch!!!(no that's not a threat just a bit of humor on my name to get some replies,k?) PS: as noted above I had said I normally had 20% less resources free in some cases...and here are the stats: Last Time I Posted,EXPLORER remained alive, went online and posted 2 reply msgs and stated myself: Resources Free 64% Now: 78% [/color]have you tried the run command "msconfig"? it will let you check off any statup programs, including systray AND explorer if you like. SO there you go M8 So you've found a way to run without Explorer. Good for you, have a biscuit. Now, let me clarify. You are simply using [Alt]+[Tab] to switch between programs, without any of the shell on screen, right? Wow, useful. Even DOS has more functionality. I'm not going to bother posting again, simply because I know you are trying to wind people up into starting a flame war - there are very few people frequenting this forum stupid enough to fall for this. I will give one piece of ADVICE though: the Name Which Sounds Funny When You Say It Fast gag isn't funny anymore, simply because we've heard them. You can tell it isn't funny when you've got to push your audience for a reaction... |

Solve : How to use newer Windows versions with 3.1 version? |
|
Answer» Please help if you can. Is it possible, or is there a special software that can allow for the Windows 3.1 programs to operate using a newer computer with a current operating system? I have older software programs and data on 3.1 version platforms and wish to use them on newer Microsoft versions. Is this possible? TIAIt very MUCH depends upon the program you WANT to run. Windows XP has a compatability mode that you can set for each program. There may even be newer programs bundled with newer Windows that already know how to run your older programs. |

Solve : FireWire 800 argh!? |

Answer» Hello everyone hope you can help me!, |

Solve : Pleeeeease Help Me!? |
|
Answer» SOMEONE please help me. I have been up all night trying to find out the characteristic associated with Windows 98 & OS/400. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it. I need a web site or anything. Please point me in the right direction. What exactly do you mean by "characteristic"? Windows 98 is for personal computers. OS/400 is an operating system for an AS/400 (midrange computer). They don't talk to each other without some AS/400 emulation software and hooks on both ends. GaryOk What you just said is greek to me. We are doing a Matrix on 6 Operating systems. They are Windows 98, OS/400, Windows XP, Linux, Unix, and OS2. We have to answer yes or no to these questions and give adequate documentation to support our answers. These are our questions. 1. Allows real-time High-Volume Transactions 2. Graphical User Interface 3. COMMAND Line Interface 4. Menu DRIVEN Interface 5. Mainframe Environment 6. Windows Environment 7. Can allow Web User Interface 8. Boot disk capabilities/issues 9. Migration across platforms 10. Supports Client/Server access 11. Format capabilities/issues 12. 16 Bit Processing 13. 32 Bit Processing 14. 64 Bit Processing 15. CISC Architecture 16. RISC Architecture 17. Memory Intensive 18. Supports Multiple Processors 19. Partitioning available 20. Back/Restore capabilities/issues Maybe this will give you more insight into what I have been looking for. I've found GUI on some of them. I've also found some of the 16, 32, & 64 Bit Processing. I'm so sorry for putting any of you through any TROUBLE! Thank you so much for helping me. OS/400 is a proprietary operating system for the IBM AS/400 midrange computer. An AS/400 is not a pc or a server in the standard definition of the term. BTW (OS = operation system, AS = Advanced System). "Back in the day" just before PCs the System36 and AS/400 were the main company computer systems for smaller and mid-level businesses as well as some large ONES. The AS/400 still has a large presence in many many companies and IBM still produces and sells them. It is a great machine and very very very reliable. It doesn't do graphics, gui, etc. but for pure reliable data processing you can hardly beat it. For more information on AS/400, OS/400 etc. you might want to start at www.ibm.com. GaryThank You So Much |
