Solve : Strange characters etc at install?

Answer»

I am trying to reinstall windows onto a 6gb hard drive and it goes through the normal processes until reaching the first screen where hundreds of strange characters appear all over the screen. ie ALPHA and numeric characters and lots of symbols I've never seen. The HDD is not corrupt.

Does this mean the motherboard is faulty ?

Any suggestions would be APPRECIATED. I cannot duplicate most of the symbols here for you to see.A virus? Also, I do not know how much SPACE on your hard disk that Windows take up, but your hard disk might be too small...

[glb]Flame[/glb]windows uses less than 300mb so space not an issue. tried hard drive in another pc and it installed windows fine.
thats why I think the MAINBOARD is faulty. or is it the videocard ?

3.

Solve : Avoiding breaking links when folder moves?

Answer»

This may be a common question, but I have a need to maintain a set of folders for CLIENTS' files, and to reference files within these folders as "links" in e-mail, Outlook and other programs.  Problem is, I often need to move or rename these folders as the client relationship changes, therefore breaking the link.

I have TRIED setting up file shortcuts to these folders, because the shortcut reference automatically updates when the folder name is changed or it is moved.  But a link using this shortcut translates back to the full folder sequence, putting me back right were I started.

Do you have any recommended way to do this?

In summary, to set up links to files that survive if the folder is moved or renamed.

Thanks,
Paul   Not a common question in this context, however it is a bit of a problem when it comes down to web design. Now since I'm not familiar with this sort of situation, I'll try and give you and understanding of the web design point of view and it might help.

You get two types of links, absolute and relative. You have what are called absolute links, which only go to the one specific filepath. In HTML, you can use relative links. These assume that the first part of the link is the same as where the file the link contains is.

Erm, I think an example will help. Let's say we have a file "C:\Website\index.htm", in which we have a link to a picture at "C:\Website\Pictures\pic.jpg".

If you were to use an absolute link to get the picture, you would need to type in the whole path (ie "C:\Website\Pictures\pic.jpg"). However, with an absolute link, you simply use "Pictures\pic.jpg".

The advantage of having a relative link is that you can move some files around and the links will remain. However, the directory structure must be maintained, so you cannot get AWAY with changing the path to "C:\My Site\Pics\pic.jpg".

Whether this will help or not depends upon exactly how you have the system arranged. If this does not help then I'm afraid that it'll be quite a task to change it.

The only way you might get around this is to use a bit of scripting. If this is like an intranet with information for your clients, you could give each document a unique ID, and put this UID into a link to a blank page which searches the directory structure for the file and redirects to it. Something like this would be very kludgy and slow, but it might work.Thank you for your thorough DESCRIPTION.  While I don't need this link structure in web design, I believe the problem is the same.  I need the links to be stored e-mail and Outlook messages, and not be broken when the folders move.  But I guess it just can't be done.

Do you hear me Bill Gates??  C'mon, there must be some way you can support this.

Paul
Well technically it can be done with sharing and/or active directory on a network.

Instead of linking to c:\myfiles\myfile.txt, you would create a share on the folder myfiles, maybe mysharedfiles.  Then you link as \\mycomputername\myfiles\myfile.txt.

When you move the files to another folder say myfiles2, then your remove the share from myfiles and add a share to myfiles2 with the same name as the previous share.

If you want to do this across computers then you manage the share in active directory.

Now if you are doing this on a web server like IIS that you can control you repoint your virtual directory to the new folder and leave the virtual directory name the same.  If you are doing this on a web server that you do not control then I suggest coming up with a better plan that INCLUDES not moving the files.

Too much information???

GaryNo, not too much information.  I'll see what I can do with this.

Thanks!

Solve : Internet Connection Sharing?

Answer»

I finally got everything I needed for internet connection sharing for a 98SE and 95. Installed new network card for the 95 computer PCI Bus 10/100 Mbps and added new drivers for it and set up ICS for both and configured one as host and the other as client. Using a Ethernet Switch and cat5 cable and still can't get the 95 to dail up. Does anyone know what may be wrong ?
Thanks RondaWhich computer is the gateway/host computer and which computer is the client?
What software are you using for ICS?
Are you RUNNING firewall software on either/both computer(s)/
Is the firewall software configured to allow local network connections?

Did you CONFIGURE the computers to use the network adapter (did you install it in the network preferences)? SHUT off your dial-up adapter. Configure a connection. The host is using windows 98SE and the client is windows 95. Software would be microsoft  windows.  I really don't know how to CHECK and see if there is any firewall software, wouldn't know what to look for, but it would most likely be on the windows 95 computer.  I just checked and didn't see anything that looks like it might be a firewall program.
Thanks COULD you tell me how to configure the computers to use the network adapter. I did install a network card in the 95 and installed drivers for it. How do I shut off the dial up adapter and configure a connection?
Thanks Both computers are accessing the internet just not at the same time.

Solve : Writing or scrolling mice?

Answer»

Windows Xp and OTHERS have pretty good writing to text
programs, like Writing Pad. For someone like me who has always had horrid penmanship and writes many NOTES a day it could be great. Problem is writing with reg style mouse somewhat difficult. I can't help but THINK that there has got to be some pen mouse, stylus, ETC that can be used on a reg. mousepad to satisfy this need. I really don't wish to spend big $$ on one of those lap top writing pads. If you can help please do.

Solve : Windows for Workgroups 3.11 - error loading progma?

Answer»

I am an oldie - continuing to use Windows for Wokgroups 3.1.1 on an (10 years) old PENTIUM 100/160 pc with 128 MB RAM   despite having two othe systems - a PIII and a P4 - both working well on Windows XP! Old habits die hard,eh?! Recently, when CALLED, Win311 WG just displays the sign in logo and then exits with the error MESSAGE "Error Loading progman.exe". Re-expanding progman.ex_ from a source floppy has not helped. How to rectify this problem and keep my old man win 311 WG going? I still use an old '486 notebook with 16MB RAM.  Windows 3.1 with Windows for Pen Computing (has a touch screen).

Something in System.ini file has changed.

What were you doing just PRIOR to this problem?  I can't find anything that WOULD cause this error.

Solve : SP2 is ssssssssssssslllllllllllllllooooooooowwwwww?

Answer»

Ever since installing SP2, my startup is very very slow.

I have TRIED unchecking a few things - like AOL and Office - from the startup items in MSConfig, but to no avail.

I don't preload a whole LOT of stuff - Palm HotSync and Norton are about the only non-required stuff.

Any thoughts?try uninstalling sp2 and RECHECK,if that does it then order the free cd version of sp2 and INSTALL from thereStrange.... How much RAM do you have installed?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Also, tell me about your processor...

[glb]Flame[/glb]P4, 2.4GHz.

512M RAMHave you ran a check for viruses, etc.?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Oh, yeah. SpyBot, Spyware blaster, Ad-Aware, Norton...Have you run a registry cleaner to fix any errors in your registry?

[glb]Flame[/glb]SP2 is Rubbish

I play on the ZONE alot and when i had SP2 installed it slowed my internet connection and PC down alot.

It does more damage than good.
If you have Norton installed on your pc you dont REALLY need SP2.

Solve : error 623 (?

Answer»

While Web pages are loadiing I often (usually) have a window pop up with a Windows error message:

Cannot load dialog.
Error 623: The system could not FINE the PHONE book entry for this connection.

I've Googled it, and most references are to VPN issues (I don't have a VPN configured) or to phone book files needing to be PRESENT in Windows/system32/ras (I tried moving the .pbk file there--no luck) or to EMAIL accounts needing to be set to connect through my LAN (they are, but Outlook isn't involved at this point anyway, is it?).

Some sites load without triggering the error, most trigger it repeatedly. Macfixit.com PROBABLY resulted in 10+ such occurrences in Firefox, and failed to download in IE. Pages will not finish loading until the errors are all dismissed (if an error notification is in the background, it appears the browser has hung).

It occurs with Firefox and IE on Windows XP. Unticking Firefox's "Enable JavaScript" button eliminates the problem; the error occurs regardless of the actual JavaScript options that are set. Disabling Java in IE doesn't appear to make a difference, but I'm not sure yet.

For all I can tell, it has NOTHING to do with phone books.

Others have had this problem, according to what I see on Google, but I can't find any solutions posted. Anyone?

Solve : winoldap?

Answer»

Please HELP! my IT team have as yet been unable to!

Each time I boot up my laptop, my system tries to run something called WINOLDAP. It does this over and over again until I get a message that says "SMBIOS DOS DRIVER - There are not enough resources available to run this PROGRAM"

I get round this at the moment by entering the task manager and spending 10 minutes "ending tasks".

What is it that is causing this program ro continually try and run and how do I stop it?

I am running Windows 98 on an IBM business laptop.

Well.... It sounds like a virus to me... Did you have antivirus protection?

Solve : startup problems - asked to select boot device...?

Answer»

Hello!

My problem is with my laptop, running Windows ME.

Lately when I try to boot it up, before it gets to the "Windows ME" loading screen, a screen comes up asking me to choose my boot device.  "Hard drive" is AUTOMATICALLY selected, but if I just hit enter, the same screen pops up again.  The only way I've managed to get around it was to pop out the battery and try turning it on again, however this can get pretty maddening, since sometimes I have to try re-starting it a dozen times before I get lucky and it loads.  Once he comp loads up, I have no PROBLEMS with it.

I used to think this problem only happened when the laptop was very cold (i.e. if I had been walking outside with it for a while,) but now it does this pretty much all the time.  Any ideas?

Thanks very much!Oh boy.... Here we GO with good ol' Windows ME.... LET's start fresh... Have you scanned for viruses?

[glb]FLAME[/glb]Yup - scanned for viruses and spyware...any other ideas?

Thanks!

Solve : Kill Explorer?

Answer»

Death to the foul Windows Process! Death I Say!

oh wait,no I'm just wondering if there's any button or key or way to instantly "kill" the process of explorer

as well as if there's a way to unkill it

so far I've only figured out how by opening a program up after I restart that shows all the processes of the computer (SpyBot Search & Destroy and the Process List menu to name one example)

but I don't want to waste resources as well as RAM opening up a whole nother program just to close the another one

I'm on Windows ME,and have around 100megs or so of RAM,so things barely run smoothly...that and without a video card it's really only 94MB of RAM....nonetheless is there a APP that I can find and download that loads on startup and unloads the explorer process...or maybe a dos command to "kill explorer, but keep windows open"

I wouldn't mind navigating through a c prompt as long as it was IN windows...and not say....like through a boot disk

any help or ideas would be more then welcome...now I'm off to slay explorer again.

[glb]IvAnAwFuLiTcH[/glb]Nope... change your mind, you can't do that so easy. Windows is built "around" explorer, it is one of its most importants components. If you don't want explorer, then you don't want windows and that means DOS. DOS 6.22, without Windows.
You will have to live with explorer further It's not Linux, man  if thy cannot run without it,can't there be a way to disable it then? Besides running Spybot Search & Destroy Each and every time...indeed it is not The System of The nx's...but I still say there must be a easier(and maybe less-resource hogging...ok resourceful) application that can be run and "end" explorer's task of running in windows

all The Process screen tries to do is shut me down!

I return to search for them thenWhy do you say that windows explorer hogs ressources? What windows do you use? What computer do you have? (processor, memory, free hard disk space). Quote

Why do you say that windows explorer hogs ressources? What windows do you use? What computer do you have? (processor, memory, free hard disk space).

Win ME,500MHz Intel 2,~96MB RAM (it's suppose to be 100,but on the side of the cpu says 96...on screen says 92.0...so I guess it's near 96),9gig hdd with about 2.62gb free

The reason I'm picky about explorer is simply if I open nearly any other program (be it spybot search & Destroy to scan for baddies...which makes the pc the most sluggish...or be it a small program like notepad for writing...explorer seems to be a useless spare wheel in the way of crashing me

now before you say "go run out and get a different os or download linux or format or buy a new computer" let me just say I'm happy with what I got...EXCEPT for the nasty part of windows known as explorer, also I've found Spybot to work 46% smoother after going in to it,and the process list, and "killing" explorer

so viking...in answer to my original question...and/or last two posts,is there any way to kill explorer...perhaps druging it so it dies until I reboot the next time or something?PS: forgot to mention it's a HP PavilionI know no way to work with Windows without Explorer. I maintain my affirmation that Explorer is very IMPORTANT to Windows and any application you use in Windows (it offers services). Maybe I am wrong, but I never heard of a computer with Windows without Explorer (from Windows 95). And... No way to "kill" him and after that expect Windows to work (or any application).
I would use Windows 98 on your computer... But you already have Windows Me. I'm sorry, I don't know to help you The only way you "kill" processes in Windows is with the classic three-finger-salute: [CTRL]+[Alt]+[Del]

As has been correctly and aptly mentioned by viking, Explorer is the vital part of Windows (as is SysTray). Specifically, Explorer is the shell, the part of an Operating System that defines the way it looks (amongst other things). It is, in effect, Windows itself. Nearly all applications also rely on the shell for their looks (which is why many Windows apps look very similar - it's by design rather than accident).

So no, you cannot kill this and still expect Windows to work properly. You'll find that if you try to close Explorer you'll get the Shutdown dialog box appearing. Quote

LIAR! Thoust CAN Kill Explorer as I had noted above.

The Main Purpose of this was if there was a hotkey way (such as Alt+E+3 = kill explorer,Ctrl+E+R=revive explorer),or perhaps another program that could do the job of killing explorer and remaning open (OTHER then ye ole ms deprocessor of [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Delete].

Simply, what I am doing now is loading up the computer with the least amount of things needed (done in Start>Run>MSCONFIG>Startup Vars) OR The Startup Selections in the Spybot Search & Destroy Menus.

This Post Brought to you by...
Spybot Search & Destroy
~Spybot Search & Destroy, one heck of a spyware scanner and nice all around helper app too! Get Your Copy Today!~

Now then, there's also the Process List-list in the SAME program,NORMALLY what I do is load up only the most needed things (HidServ,Systray, and My AntiVirus and/or Firewall...which like to run all the time anyhow...or disable it if I have offline plans such as running compression tests, archiving, doing something that takes up alot of resources...or isn't done online) anyhow after my selective startup starts up,I have spybot s&d open,I goto process list>I click on explorer.exe,I hit Kill,I use Alt+Tab and select a program I'm using instead (such as those compression tests I mentioned above,7-zip runs alot better without explorer then with),I've even found in some cases this adds aprox. 20% in the system resources free (I have a shortcut set so I can check system properties WITH or Without explorer)

So guys, you still think Windows can run without explorer.exe? That te Microsoft turtle can shed and still have skin? Or did you think I simply wanted to do say ">del explorer, run windows" (as much I wish,I can't exactly do that...but make best with my alternative methoid)

Thy answer me or face an awful itch!!!(no that's not a threat just a bit of humor on my name to get some replies,k?)

PS: as noted above I had said I normally had 20% less resources free in some cases...and here are the stats: Last Time I Posted,EXPLORER remained alive, went online and posted 2 reply msgs and stated myself: Resources Free 64%

Now: 78%

[/color]have you tried the run command "msconfig"? it will let you check off any statup programs, including systray AND explorer if you like. SO there you go M8
So you've found a way to run without Explorer. Good for you, have a biscuit.

Now, let me clarify. You are simply using [Alt]+[Tab] to switch between programs, without any of the shell on screen, right? Wow, useful. Even DOS has more functionality.

I'm not going to bother posting again, simply because I know you are trying to wind people up into starting a flame war - there are very few people frequenting this forum stupid enough to fall for this. I will give one piece of ADVICE though: the Name Which Sounds Funny When You Say It Fast gag isn't funny anymore, simply because we've heard them. You can tell it isn't funny when you've got to push your audience for a reaction...

Solve : is the power supply to small??

Answer»

Ok one more time about this gateway, that your tired of hearing me cry about, ,lol.
To recap ,its a two year old gateway, orignal config was 1.1ghz amd athlon ,20 gb WD,hard drive,128 mb ram.
Problem?,i have to turn it on and off until it starts up,it wont show any display on the monitor,i dont know if the hd is starting or not ,but i can hear the A :\FLOPPY boot, now after about seven or eight times of turning on and off ,the monitor will come on,some times it will lock on the windows start screen, sometimes it will boot to windows,it locks in normal mode and safe mode the only time it doesnt lock up is in DOS.
So now i replaced the HD with an WD/80 GB/8MB buffer,i up the ram with a 256 pc133,which is the same type as the old one, reinstalled Windows ME,(Which took me for ever because it locked up every ten minutes or so,i reinstalled ALL hardware drivers, reset cmos, reinstalled all drivers and UPDATES for Microstar(the maker of the motherboard),that i could get from them, and you GUESSED it nothing worked ,still the same o'l piece of pooooooooop!!!.
So i call a repair SHOP ask about a new motherboard, told the man the same thing ive just told you ,and his reply, your power supply is to small
So what do you guys think?yes no maybe?
Hard to tell !

What size is your Power Supply Unit ? 150W ? 100W ?

the power supply is 250w Try to see if there are any problems with a 300-400 W source.just put in a 350w power supply ,and guess what? :'(nothing the same ol thing The only original components left are the M'board and one of the ram sticks ?

Try it with the original memory stick removed to see if this is causing the problem

If the same problem still occurs then the only original component left is the Mobo - so by a process of elimination this is the likely problem.

(If you have any other things installed like network CARDS, they are best removed to eliminate them from as well)

Solve : Windows Boot Menu?

Answer»

Hello all. Just a QUICK, fairly unimportant question, but one that is puzzling me a bit.

God only knows what I've done, but for some reason the boot menu (when you hold down [Ctrl] during the POST, where you select the SAFE Mode, DOS prompt etc) doesn't allow me enough time to do anything.

Normally, there is a set time LIMIT for you to select something. When you press anything the TIMER disappears and you have all the time in the world to gander at the options. Mine automatically goes to zero and just selects "Normal".

Any SUGGESTIONS would be greatly welcomed

Solve : Sheepish questions?

Answer»

First off Im not a complete computer noob but I do have some very basic questions....
When I click on a link Id like it if it opened up a new window every time instead of STAYING in one and switching it. This gets very annoying especially when looking at pictures or just checking somthing out real quick, how would I change this? Secondly MANY links dont work and give me that "The page cannot be displayed" error. This could be a problem with some of the websites but IVE had friends look at the same page and it worked for them but not me. I do have several programs running in the background that serve as protection (LISTED below) but whenever a link dosent work I systematicly turn each one off to see if its the source of the problem and usually its not. Im almost sure its a configuration issue but I dont like fooling with things and perfer someone who knows what their doing to TELL me what to do, thanks alot.

EDIT: I would go to CNET help ok, but the link dosent work lol and I know you can open up a new window by right clicking on a link then selecting "open in new window" but I want it to do it without having to do that.

Solve : Alternative key for left mouse??

Answer»

I THINK this is a windows question.  I have a Compaq Armada E500 which, with a bit of luck, will have upgraded to XP in about an HOUR. It's taking  forever.

Anyway the left mouse key on this computer doesn't work well, have to hit it hard. Mostly it doesn't matter cause I can tap the pad, but for drag and drop and some other tasks it would help.

I'd like to nominate the key with the Windows icon because it's in the right place and I've never used it for anything.

Is it possible?  Is there an idiots way to do it.

Thanks
JJAre you using a laptop? Also, I'm not sure that this operation is possible...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Yes, it's a Compaq Armada E500 P3, 128 + 11GB.  I don't often travel with it now as Internet cafes are EVERYWHERE so I save the weight, but still it's a NICE back-up and occasionally useful.

Solve : How to use newer Windows versions with 3.1 version?

Answer»

Please help if you can.  Is it possible, or is there a special software that can allow for the Windows 3.1 programs to operate using a newer computer with a current operating system?  I have older software programs and data on 3.1 version platforms and wish to use them on newer Microsoft versions.  Is this possible?  TIAIt very MUCH depends upon the program you WANT to run.  Windows XP has a compatability mode that you can set for each program.  There may even be newer programs bundled with newer Windows that already know how to run your older programs.

Just for fun, what programs are you wanting to run?

Its actually my father in laws computer problem and will have to ask him exactly what he is looking to do.  He FELT there was a ACTUAL software available to do this.  I will repost shortly when I find out.

Hey does anyone know where I can get an XP home key bc my friend gave me his xp home cd but didn't know where his activation key was.  someone please help me! I would suggest that you BUY one from a reputable Microsoft dealer.  Windows XP is now licensed to the computer not the person, so if your friend gave you the disk he was supposed to give you the computer it was installed on too.

From the XP End User License Agreement.......

Solve : FireWire 800 argh!?

Answer»

Hello everyone hope you can help me!,

The problem i am having is with a external firewire 800 harddrive. My computer is a high spec, SONY Vaio K215M Laptop running windows XP service pack 2 with a GIG of ram. I dont have any firewire ports on the laptop so i use a 1394 3-port cardbus. Everything has been working perfectly, and i formatted the drive after i bought it and used it.

I turned it off one day and now, For no apparent reason now my computer wont pick up that the device is turned on, it just wont recognise it at all. The problem wasnt CAUSED by installing XP service pack 2, it has never been used with SP1. I havent installed any new drivers or any new programs the problem occured over night. Because my cardbus has 2 firewire 800 slots, when the hardrive first didnt work i used the second slot. The computer picked up the device, and this worked....for a day. And now neither of them work. The problem seems to be with plugging it in and out... I have checked for yellow exclamation marks to do with the drivers and there are none.

What can i do??

I tried MICROSOFT help and that was useless

Please help me!!

Thank you,

MichaelTry plugging your device in someone elses computer to see if it works, and try plugging another device you know works in your computer firewire port to see if that works.

This will FIND out wether it is the device or the computer that is the problemit works on another person computer no hope for me then i take it?  remove it from the device manager and re-plug it in...

Solve : Pleeeeease Help Me!?

Answer» SOMEONE please help me. I have been up all night trying to find out the characteristic associated with Windows 98 & OS/400. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it. I need a web site or anything. Please point me in the right direction. What exactly do you mean by "characteristic"?

Windows 98 is for personal computers.  OS/400 is an operating system for an AS/400 (midrange computer).  They don't talk to each other without some AS/400 emulation software and hooks on both ends.

GaryOk What you just said is greek to me. We are doing a Matrix on 6 Operating systems. They are Windows 98, OS/400, Windows XP, Linux, Unix, and OS2. We have to answer yes or no to these questions and give adequate documentation to support our answers. These are our questions.
1. Allows real-time High-Volume Transactions
2. Graphical User Interface
3. COMMAND Line Interface
4. Menu DRIVEN Interface
5. Mainframe Environment
6. Windows Environment
7. Can allow Web User Interface
8. Boot disk capabilities/issues
9. Migration across platforms
10. Supports Client/Server access
11. Format capabilities/issues

15. CISC Architecture
16. RISC Architecture
17. Memory Intensive
18. Supports Multiple Processors
19. Partitioning available
20. Back/Restore capabilities/issues

Maybe this will give you more insight into what I have been looking for. I've found GUI on some of them. I've also found some of the 16, 32, & 64 Bit Processing. I'm so sorry for putting any of you through any  TROUBLE!
Thank you so much for helping me.
OS/400 is a proprietary operating system for the IBM AS/400 midrange computer.  An AS/400 is not a pc or a server in the standard definition of the term.  BTW (OS = operation system, AS = Advanced System).  "Back in the day" just before PCs the System36 and AS/400 were the main company computer systems for smaller and mid-level businesses as well as some large ONES.  The AS/400 still has a large presence in many many companies and IBM still produces and sells them.  It is a great machine and very very very reliable.  It doesn't do graphics, gui, etc. but for pure reliable data processing you can hardly beat it.  For more information on AS/400, OS/400 etc. you might want to start at www.ibm.com.

Solve : Multiple Saves??

Answer»

Sorry, don't know if I'm posting this in the right spot.

Not my computer, but a friend's.

She has lotssss of pictures on her computer; they need to be high resolution for modeling reasons so they are all huge. She only has a 10 gig hard drive and she can't do anything because there's not enough disk space available.

She says she thinks the pictures are savign in more than one place, some that she doesn't even know of? It's been doing it for 3 months. "Sometimes when it starts dropping, I can actually watch it drop from 70MB free to kb's in minutes. Then over a day or two, it might build back to 70MB free."

Okay, so basically, as soon as she frees up space (EVERYTHING on her comp is DELETED except these pictures.... tons of them), the free space disappears immediately. Anyone have a comment on that?

Also, is there a reason why these pictures may be saving in multiple spots at once rather than just the one spot? Is there a setting we can put it to only save it at that one spot? What windows version? (question no. 1)
Does she use Internet? Antivirus? Firewall? Anti-SpyWare? (question no. 2)
How many programs start when the computer boots? (question no. x... let's give away the count )
What program does she use to work with images?
70 MB is her empty space on hdd now? That is sooooooooo small...
Does she has a CD-Writer? Or DVD-writer?
Can she make a computer upgrade? (that is a little too much for that problem, all she has to do in fact is to free some space, let's say 3-4 Gigabytes on harddisk).
Yes, when she works with images, the program she uses makes temporary files, which use also enough space.
Did you (two) delete the content from Windows/temp directory?
Did you delete the content from the directory where the programs that she works with makes backups and temporary files?
Did you emptied the Recycle Bin?

I sent her the questions you asked and had her answer them. Here are her answers, don't mind her spelling, she types like a teen  :-/

What windows version? (question no. 1)XP
Does she use Internet? Antivirus? Firewall? Anti-SpyWare? (question no. 2) YES TO ALL, FIREWALL THAT CAME WITH XP, VARIOUS SPYWARE ADAWARES ANTIVIRUSES, REGUALARYL, AND WORM AND TROJAN DETECOTORS
How many programs start when the computer boots? YAHOO, REGISTRY REPAIR, NORTON DISC DR, BUT IT STOPPED WORKIN BOUT WHEN THIS STARTED, SED ANTOHER PROGRAM HAS ACCESS TO URE COMPUTER, CANT RUN WITH IT LIKE THAT, SO NEVER WILL RUN DISC DR (question no. x... let's give away the count  )
What program does she use to work with images? KODAK EXCLUSIVELY FOR MY MODELING PHOTOS CAME WITH KODAK EASY SHARE DIGITAL CAMERA ( i think its like double saving sumtimes, somewhere)
70 MB is her empty space on hdd now? That is sooooooooo small... NOOOO JOKE, USED TO B WAYYYY MORE THEN SUDDENLY AND I MEAN SUDDENLY THE SPACE JUST STARTED EVAPORATING ON ITS OWN WHEN I WUZNT SAVING OR LOADING PIX, NOW RARELY OVER 125, THEN WILL JUST START RANDOMLY DROPPING IN FRONT OF MY EYES FOR NO REASON AND IF I CLEAR SPACE BY REMOVING PROGRAMS AND PIX, IT JUST SUCKS IT UP EITHER IN MINUTES OR SUMTIMES WILL WAIT DAYZ STABLE,THEN ZOOOM IT ALL GOES AT ONCE ON ITS OWN, NO REGULAR TIME OF DAY EITHER
Does she has a CD-Writer? Or DVD-writer? CD
IM AFRAID TO BECAUSE IM AFRAID ILL DELETE SOMETHING IMPORTANT AND REMOVE PORTFOLIO OR LOCATION SHOOT PICTURES PERMANENTLY, DONT HAVE ENUFF FREE DISC SPACE TO BURN THEM OFF ONTO  A DISC AND WHEN I DO, IT NEVER FREES SPACE, ACTUALLY LOSE SPACE AFTER THE BURN LIKE  ITS HIDING THEM SUMWHERE ELSE ON MY COMPUTER, SO I CAN ONLY BURN A FEW AT A TIME
Did you delete the content from the directory where the programs that she works with makes backups and temporary files? I DONT KNOW WEHRE IT IS MAKING THE BACK UP FILES OR WHAT THEY ARE CALLED I JUST SUSPECT THAT IT IS
Did you emptied the Recycle Bin? EVERY HOURSooooooooooo.... how much free space does she has? 2 Gigabytes? 3 Gygabytes? It should be enough to make a cd with some images for free some space. I suppose she makes a folder where she copy the images to put on cd, makes the cd and then deletes the folder with the images from harddisk. And the images she burned on cd also has to delete from harddisk, unless she has to use them again soon.
How to find where your windows temp folder is:
click on the Start button, choose Run... and type cmd
Press the enter key. It opens a command window. Type:
set tmp
and note the answer (tmp= something)
then type
set temp
and note the answer (temp=something).
Usually, these are the temp folders:
c:\winnt\temp   (you can delete everything in that folder)
c:\documents and settings\your user name\local settings
where you have 2 folders in which you should delete everything: temp and temporary internet files.
Then check your Event Viewer (start->control pannel->administrative tools->event viewer) and see what errors are listed there --> if you don't know too much about computers, better ask a friend to help you with these.
OK. Start your picture optimization program and look for the "tools" or "options" menu. You should find there the settings for temporary folders, if the program makes a copy of the image (a backup copy) when you work with the image. What dimensions do the pictures have? If they have large dimensions (I mean 2000x2000 pixels, 32 bits colour or more and so on), also will be large dimensions used by those pictures on harddisk. I suppose that after you work with the image you save it under another name, so, quickly, if you don't delete the "original" and the backup (to keep only the "result" image) you take 3 times the space used by 1 image (1 space: the original; 2xspace: original+backup; 3xspace: original+backup+final image and possibly 4xspace if you open the final again -- it creates a backup file for the final image).
How large is a ordinary image?
When she installed windows? When was the last time she reinstalled windows? Windows XP is a stable system, but sometimes the best option is to reinstall it. How much space Windows occupies? (right click on WINNT directory, Properties and see the space/dimension used).
Don't rely too much on free space reported by windows. You have to check what applications are running (press CTRL+ALT+DELETE on the same time-- in fact press CTRL+ALT, keep them down and press one time DELETE, and choose Task Manager.
Also seek for the options of the cd recording application and find the temporary directory (after you finish burning it should be empty).
It is a lot to talk about.her response

"Free space? lmao...i cant burn or defrag or restore (which ive donea few times ) because i only have 50 MB of disc space) so i cant move themoff.  When I burn, it does NOT relieve disc space or free any up, actually seems to take more even when the files on computer seem to b deleted.  Old XP program, used computer, dont have a new one."bump, hopefully you can continue to help us vikingIf she has only 50 MB free on harddisk, she has to free a lot. Is she connected to a computer network? Tell her to ask a friend to move 650 MB from her harddisk (from her images) on his harddisk or more (but in chunks of 650 MB, for easing the cd creation) for a little while. She needs 800MB - 1 GB free to create a cd. After she creates the cd, she must delete the files she had put on cd.  And so on, untill she has 2-3 GB free.

Windows also grows in size after updates. And in that moment, a harddisk of 40 GB or 80 GB (the smallest capacity harddisks) it is very cheap. She might consider upgrading her computer with a new harddisk. If she works a lot with images, also she can consider the option of buying a dvd writer and writing dvds. But a bigger harddisk is strictly necessary.
The problem appeared only for 3 months. Virus updates are up to date (antivirus program updated regurarly)?
I really have no other idea... And I don't know also where you live right now, to pay  a visit (which is near to impossible) because I live far away in Romania, in Iasi
What free space had she when she observed the free space was dissapearing?
When she is using the program for images it is ok for free space to dissapear in very large quantities (I mean hundreds of Mega or more).
I don't know what to say more... I have no other idea than to free space and make a windows reinstall, upgrade harddisk capacity...

Solve : Nero burning / msvcrt.dll?

Answer»

Hi there

I recently removed Nero CD burner from my PC as it wasn't working properly. When I rebooted, I got the message msvcrt.dll missing and that I must reinstall WINDOWS 98.

Having had this problem before and not having been able to reinstall windows, I thought I would try and get the .dll file from my other computer (also WIN 98 ) and use DOS to move the file back into place in WNIDOWS/SYSTEM. The problem now is that DOS will not let me move the .dll from a floppy disk to the system folder.

I have tried moving files around in DOS on the other computer and it's been fine so I know it's not my knowledge of DOS syntax that's the problem!

Can anybody help me?
It would have been helpful if you had mentioned the error message(s) you were getting.

DOS syntax: copy a:\msvcrt.dll c:\windows\system

If that doesn't work you can always use windows explorer and do the move/copy that way.

Good luck.  Hi zzyzx!

Thanks for the advice. That's the problem, that's the syntax i used and the error message i'm getting is "bad command or filename."

Re your other advice - Do I not have to be able to get into Windows to use Windows Explorer? that's the thing I can't do unfortunately...

cheers

DanDan,

A couple of things come to mind. Can you boot into safe mode. If you can, you should be able to do your copy and then you're good to go.

If you can't get into safe mode, boot your Win98 CD. Before you get to the actual install, there should be a few screens that will allow you to bail out with F3. Bailing out will take you to a screen with a prompt; you might be able to run your copy from there (DOS will be loaded at this point). Only problem I see here is that your loaded OS will not see FAT32 drives.

If neither of these work, use your other PC to download a bootdisk from:

http://www.bootdisk.com

Boot the problem PC with your new bootdisk. This should GIVE you enough of an OS to do your copy.

Good luck.

Hey zz

Good of you to offer the advice again. thanks very much

But I have surprised myself by sorting it out!!

Instead of using the MOVE command in DOS I used COPY and it worked like a dream!

Solve : runtime error, urgent help needed?

Answer»

I have windows xp, and in the last COUPLE of weeks, every time i go into Microsot word it randomly comes up with a 'runtime error abnormal program termination error'

I have seen messages which are alot like the message i get, but the root problem of these other ones is the internet, but although i do have broadband is is not ever connected when the message comes up.

It is vital that i get this sorted out, as i am doing my English exam in school and i really NEED to be able to redraft my essays but this is impossible, as when it termanates the emergancy document recovery is not working either

if you know what the cause of this proble is then please reply, the message i get is a bit like this, although the location of the drive (in itallics) may not be exactly as i have written, as, as i have said above the message comes up randomly and i don't know the next time it will appear!

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error! Program: C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFTWORKSAbnormal program termination

please reply is you have an idea on how to fix this problem
Kaytee......Which program are you using ?  You mention M/S Word ( which is part of the M/S office package ) ....but at the end of your post you mention the error as refering to M/S works .......
Perhaps you could CLARIFY this for us .

dl65  Hi, Please go to:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbhowto
and paste the exact error message in the search screen and see what you come up with...i meant M/S word, OOPS  *CENSORED* i can't edit the post but the works bit was a mistake sorryCan you reinstall the Office suite? (or just Microsoft Word?)
Do you have the cds with Word?If you do install the entire Office suite or just Word, also go to:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/default.aspx

and get the latest updates for your version. Microsoft updates Office frequently but rarely tells users where/how to get the updates.

Solve : Startup stops for random time then finishes?

Answer»

I am working on a friends computer(WINDOWSXP) and when I reboot it starts to boot and then sits at a black screen for 10 to 15 minutes not doing anything.  I can tell that the HARD DRIVE or floppy are doing NOTHING and after a random time, it starts to boot again just fine. This does not happen everytime, very random.  Is this a hardware ISSUE?I think so, probably the power source...

Solve : Return of the deleted files?

Answer»

I USE a networked W2K PC. When I DELETE FILES, they GO. When I reboot, they have returned. Why is this, and how do I prevent it?Do you have antivirus protection? Are the files in use by the other computer(s) on your network?

[GLB]Flame[/glb]Yes, I use mantec Corporate AV. No, I share no files. What are the files you are deleting ?

If they are system files such as "temp" that are needed they will set themselves up every time you re-boot
