Solve : Is the PC better that the Apple?? |
Answer» Here we go again.. But there have been many new developments both in the Max world and the Windows world. So are PCs now better? Has the Mac been dragging? How I miss the old days ... I knew where I stood. For everything Windows, and against everything Mac. Of course the world has changed and things these days are much more nuanced. In a world with iPhones, iPads and all the other smartphones and tablets, our reliance on Macs and Windows PCs has reduced. And this makes the differences seem less key. ...Really? That was a poor video. What do you think? Why are you even giving this the time of day? It's sad to see a good resource like PC Advisor sharing such junk. People just need to learn that there is no correct answer to this question - It all comes down to what the individual needs and prefers. For example, I would generally use Linux or Mac OS as I find that I can be more productive on a Linux/UNIX system than I am on a Windows machine. Does that mean that Linux or Mac OS is better than Windows? NO! It means that I prefer it or that it works best for me. People seem to just pick sides based on what their friends say. I have heard so many people saying "Macs suck" yet when I ask why they either say that "My friend said they suck" or make up some nonsense argument such as them not being upgradeable or the famous "Macs are more expensive than PCs". People just need to drop this topic and let people use what they want - There is no "best" platform. Quote from: camerongray on May 13, 2014, 11:35:34 AM Why are you even giving this the time of day?You are right. I regret now posting that video. Review all your news sources before you HIT Post... Quote from: patio on May 13, 2014, 12:05:15 PM Review all your news sources before you hit Post...The first time I thought it was just the British accent That made kt hard to understand. . So I thought that Mac Wworld UK would be a good source and it was only a case of my weakness to understand what they were saying. So I posted it. But After the third time, I realized they were talking gibberish. Was it a spoof? Accurate Being serious though, the only gripe I have against Apple is the pricing. I game a lot so running Mac OSX is not a viable option for me. With Adobe suites now holding a large market stake in design work there is no real need for one or the other as both Windows and OSX share the same suite. With the implementation of SteamOS, Linux gaming is starting to take a huge leap forward and gain some considerable traction. The main downside for PC to me is the range of hardware available. For Mac machines, consoles, etc it is easier for the developers to create an application or game knowing that it will run because the hardware is very similar or identical ACROSS machines. Imho Apple has created a state of 'eliteness' with their products that is undeserved, and has simply been a result of very aggressive marketing. That image explains it perfectly! Quote from: Kurtiskain on May 13, 2014, 08:06:50 PM Imho Apple has created a state of 'eliteness' with their products that is undeserved, and has simply been a result of very aggressive marketing. That's exactly my issue - People see using/owning Apple products as some sort of special club. Back when I was in school I used to use a Lenovo ThinkPad L512 - People never really took notice other thank thinking it was some ancient machine from the '90s. I then replaced that with a 13" MacBook Pro and straight away I would get people who I never really spoke to coming up saying "wow, you have a Mac, that's so cool" and wanting to use it - It was mental. Of course I wasn't one of those people that embraced this, I found it more annoying than anything else. The machine itself is nice, but nothing special IMO - Later got another ThinkPad (T440s) to use as my primary laptop due to severely missing my beloved TRACKPOINT . Quote from: camerongray on May 13, 2014, 08:39:36 PM Back when I was in school I used to use a Lenovo ThinkPad L512 - People never really took notice other thank thinking it was some ancient machine from the '90s. The word "fanboi" sums up the juvenile nature of this kind of stupid brand enthusiasm. Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 13, 2014, 02:21:36 PM The first time I thought it was just the British accent That made kt hard to understand. There is no single "British accent". They are both speaking with noticeable south east English "estuary" accents; this is something that many Brits themselves dislike. It's a hybrid of middle-class and Cockney. Jamie Oliver uses it. Solve : Cpu lag every 10 - 30 seconds?? |
Answer» Hi guys im hoping you can help me with my problem, Just recently as in the last week ive been getting fps drops when ever i play GAMES, (online and offline). Ive seen other people running the same cpu and having the same problems. So im ASSUMING its my cpu. I dont think its a overhearing problem because my cpu rare goes over 55 degrees Celsius. Please Help me with this problem,You problem could be is a number of areas. Here are random ideas. First random thought is that your hard drive has an issue and you have indexing turned on. The two conditions could result it periodic slow downs. But more likely is Internet tragic congestion. So try and find a way to duplicate the problem offline. If it happens offline and becomes predictable, you need to look into what services are running in the background. Why do you think it has anything to do with the specific CPU that you have? When and where ere did you recently see any such remarks on other forums? There were, a long time ago, documented flaws in some AMD CPUs. But that was back when. Have you checked the motherboard makers site for possible BIOS updates that would fix this problem? Do you have another graphics card you can try? Does your AV run in the background all the time? Still a novice, What is indexing lol? As for internet traffic congestion i redid my entire firewall setting for what is allowed and unallowed through so i dont see how it could be that. I have been able to replicate the results in offline games yes. This is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c49p55OI2vY like the problem i am having It is most noticeable in bf4 but it does do it in everygame. I will try updating the bios tomorrow to see if that resolves it and i have tried the GPU in another pc with no problems. Wait. Flashing the BIOS is a last ditch thing. Only if the maker says it is very important update. Indexing is the way Windows PREPARES your hard drive fro better access. It also means creating a method to find text in files quickly. Here is an article about how to turn off indexing in Windows 7. disable indexing in Windows 7 Quote Don't bother for the checkbox "Allow files on this drive...". Even if it's checked, if the service is disabled, Windows won't index anything at all. But I do not think that will solve your issues. Indexing can oily cause a periodic lag if something is wrong. First check to see what other services are running in the background. I say you read this first: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/optimize-windows-better-performance#optimize-windows-better-performance=windows-vista Yes, it says Vista, but the rules also apply to Windows 7. Another link: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/best-performance-for-programs-or-background-services Be wary about doing edits to the registry. Skip this if you are unsure. This looks better: http://www.askvg.com/windows-7-services-that-can-be-safely-set-to-manual/ Hope that helps. Depending on what games your running you may want to try setting the CPU Core Affinity to a specific core or cores for a game. You have 8 cores and if you take a game that is rated to run fine on a dual-core and set affinity to 2 cores, does it run any better? I have to use this with some older games I have with my quadcore AMD Athlon II x4 620 2600Mhz. Without Affinity set to a single core for Unreal Tournament 99 for example the game has FPS lags and spikes and its very annoying. After I set the CPU affinity to a single core of the 4 available cores it runs awesomely perfect!!! http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/how-to-set-processor-affinity-to-an-application-in-windows/ |

Solve : Issue with Telnet Server? |
Answer» I have a telnet server setup on WINDOWS 8 that i'd like to use to host a chat room and various text based games. I have all that already setup and when you login to the server it automatically loads the main Python script. The problem is that when users press ctrl + C they are able to "terminate the batch job" and ACCESS a regular command prompt. The cmd does not have admin privileges, however i still do not want users accessing it. CTRL +C is hard coded in the command shell. Each users systems command shell would have to be altered to disable it at their end. This is not likely going to happen. Not sure about Windows systems, but in Unix you can add a handler for the SIGINT signal (sent when CTRL+C is pressed) and override the DEFAULT behaviour. This is usually done in C - not sure how you'd accomplish it in Python. |

Solve : Live Sports Feeds? |
Answer» I didn't whether to put this topic here or in the "Virus and Malware" area. I am trying not to get a virus or malware on my computer by installing one of the video downloaders or the like that they say I need to watch sports (hockey) live on my computer. It seems like every site I go to wants me to install some thing. I was wondering if any one knows of a site that doesn't require this or a safe video downloader/player to use. I keep SEEING "FLP" and have used one of them but that was a long time ago and can't remember which one I had. I have seen this a lot with people who have severed the connection to Cable or Satellite TV and want to view that same content over the internet. The networks/sites that host these feeds have interests involved and that interest is to make money. Some are better than others and just give you frequent commercials that sometimes can be blocked by ad-block plus in firefox browser etc and others fail to operate if the ad's have been killed off. While others need a player to join into the live feed and if you want to view them you need to install the player. |

Solve : How do you identify product types from barcode? |
Answer» Dear all, The Universal Product Code (UPC) is a barcode symbology (i.e., a SPECIFIC type of barcode) that is widely used in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and in other countries for tracking trade items in stores. Its most common form, the UPC-A, consists of 12 numerical digits, which are uniquely assigned to each trade item. Along with the related EAN barcode, the UPC is the barcode mainly used for scanning of trade items at the point of sale, per GS1 specifications.[1] UPC data structures are a component of GTINs (Global Trade Item Numbers). All of these data structures follow the global GS1 specification which bases on international standards. What kind of product you want to inventory? EDIT: Rather that trying to write your own software, you may want to consider buying a new up-ti-date scanner with its own software. This is a helpful reference from UNEXPECTED source: http://www.ebay.com/gds/Barcode-Scanner-Buying-Guide-/10000000177627177/g.html Really. It has some good ideas. Quote Evidenced by the ubiquity of barcodes, barcode scanners are an integral part of the modern retail, commercial, and industrial environments. Scanners are used to manage information for checkout, inventory management, and a large number of specialized applications from assembly lines to medical patient management. For these reasons, scanners come in many forms and technologies. Laser scanners are the most common, while image - based scanners and 2D imagers add special functionality. Handheld scanners are used in a wide variety of applications, while POS terminals benefit from dedicated stationary scanners. Buyers can find scanners with special features such as wireless connectivity, ruggedization, and more. With a wide range of options and price points, a little research can help buyers find a scanner that matches their needs exactly.Hope this was of some help for you. UPCs don't encode "categories" or departments. They basically have manufacturer and product codes. UPCs are designed to be used with an inventory system that can track UPCs and assign items to certain categories. YOu scan a barcode and you get a number. that number would be a unique lookup in a product database that can store further information not coded in the UPC on that product, such as managers DISCOUNTS on the item, promotions, what department it belongs too, etc. This should be part of any standard software for inventory management.Dear Geek and BC_Programmer, Thank you for your explanation to the topic, it was very helpful indeed. I now know that UPC/EAN does not contain any unique product identifier for the different categories. I was hoping they do have it, for example, 1 would denote grocery items, 2- Electronics etc. The reason i asked was not to design a new software to read bar-codes. Rather i was actually interested in doing inventory management for my store products. I have different types of products in store, from grocery items, electronics, clothings etc. And i was hoping, by just scanning them, my scanner can read the barcode and automatically categorize it according to their different types. Looks like the only way to do that is by imputing the codes for the different categories by myself, pretty much like imputing price, so when the POS detects it, it will automatically sort it out. |

Solve : where are my pictures HELP? |
Answer» Please forgive my computer illiteracy. I am a senior so am not familiar with a lot of computer terms. But I have Windows 7 on my PC Last night I was uploading pictures to my computer. USUALLY an icon flashes at the BOTTOM of the screen and I follow the instrucions. (It says import pictures and videos etc). It did not flash so I unplugged the USB port to my camera and plugged it back in again. A different kind of icon flashed so I clicked on it and it gave me the same instructions only in a very unfamiliar format. It always gives me options to erase (after uploading) the pictures on my camera and I also see all the pictures that were just uploaded. I saw the pictures . They were uploaded. I just assumed they were uploaded to my Pictures file as usual. I have looked everywhere..there are no pictures from yesterday anywhere. I looked in every single picture file I have ever taken and there are no pictures from yesterday and of course now the computer has erased the pictures on my camera so I cannot re upload them. Any idea where m y pictures might be?Sounds like the pics are still on the phone...and not on the PC yet... |

Solve : Routers - Performance Question? |
Answer» I was looking at a router online for sale that claims to give optimum performance for gamers. other times you may just have a bad router. Unfortunately, routers often don't fail by completely dying. Rather, they'll stop working well and you won't notice immediately. If your router turns into a declining dud, you'll probably want to get a new one. Here is another Life Hacker thing you might like: http://lifehacker.com/5920709/five-best-home-wi-fi-routers I think they are more honest that CNET or PCMAG. What I like about the Life Hacker article is they mention a Buffalo router ships with DD-WRT already on-board. DD-WRT, as you know, gives you more ways to tweak the performance. Router's are effectively barebones Linux MACHINES, but they do have the same speed considerations for processing and MEMORY and other things. So faster components could REDUCE the routing overhead. Enough to require silly coloured lights and can-shaped cases? Not even close. Let alone the added price tag. Quote Router's are effectively barebones Linux machines, but they do have the same speed considerations for processing and memory and other things. So faster components could reduce the routing overhead. I assumed pretty much just as you stated. However figured I would check since sometimes assumptions are far off. Even though I used the Linksys BEFSR41 as a reference, I am currently using a D-Link DIR-601 which has a: Architecture:MIPS Vendor: Atheros Bootloader: U-Boot System-On-Chip: AR7240 CPU Speed: 350MHz Processor, and I flashed it with DD-WRT to make use of far more options for configuration than that of what D-Link originally had offered. I have no complaints with my internet connection and traffic through this device. Personally after upgrading to DD-WRT from the original flash it seems to operate BETTER for how fast systems connect and authenticate to the secured WPA2 wifi. But as far as regular wired network/internet connectivity goes, there is no difference noticed between this D-Link DIR601 and the Linksys BEFSR41 that I had prior, and to me there was nothing to gain anyways since they are both 100mbps hardwired. Latency for both with direct local devices is like 3ms and latency with the internet fluctuates on a cycle with my ISP Comcast where when monitoring latency it fluctuates between 30 and 60ms when logging pings around the clock and looking back at the data. Day after day the latency doubles to around 60ms from like 9am to 11pm and then the internet gets quiet with people sleeping and then the latency drops to around 30ms until the East Coast wakes up again. I pretty much upgraded to the D-Link #1 to have wifi, but #2 to have a more modern router since the longer security devices are out there in the field, the more linkely they are to have a vulnerability come to surface and be outside of their support timeframe for flash updates to correct for exploits etc. |

Solve : Bluetooth download? |
Answer» Has anyone got a download for BLUETOOTH for the pc so that I can connect with a phone, thanks for any help.If your computer and phone both have Bluetooth capability then you should have everything you need. You will need to pair the 2 but once paired, you should be able to transfer files between them. In Win 7, look for a Bluetooth icon in the system tray, right-click on it and select "Add a device...". You will also need to turn your phone's Bluetooth on, set the phone to "discoverable". More info... I tried a Bluetooth dongle and that did not work, so I think i'll give it up as a bad job. What HAPPENED when you plugged in the Bluetooth dongle? I have used quite a few LOW cost BT dongles on DIFFERENT computers and have not encountered one that did not work. Win 7 should recognize that you plugged the dongle in and install drivers for it.It downloaded the driver etc and I seen it in the files, but would not pick up the phoneDid you TELL the computer to search for Bluetooth devices? Did you set the phone's Bluetooth to "Discoverable"? I'm not sure of your Bluetooth knowledge. In order to "pair" Bluetooth devices, one device needs to be set to "discoverable" so that when another device searches for it, it will be found. The Bluetooth devices do not normally automatically search nor are they automatically discoverable. Solve : Chromecast?? |
Answer» So I have been thinking about getting the Google Chromecast since it was first announced but wasn't sure it really had anything more to offer compare to my current setup. I have had my HDTV as a second monitor for years. First through the External monitor port and now using the HDMI port. Needless to say I don't have a problem playing content from the internet on my TV. ANY content, not just the limited Chromecast apps. I was thinking about getting one, just for the *censored* of it really. True. It's cheap enough that I'm not upset at myself for buying it. Quote from: Salmon Trout on April 13, 2014, 01:45:20 AM Given that I have a Samsung smart HDTV I thought I could talk myself out of buying a Smart TV by having the Chromecast but I still want the Smart TV. My dad has one so I know that you won't find anything in the Chromecast to replace the Smart TV features. My mom has my niece STAY over usually a few nights every week and my niece has a Netflix account on her iPad. The TV they use is nice but has no internet connection or apps. I figure they could use the Chromecast with Netflix and save a few bucks on DVD rentals. I streamed YouTube for a while from my tablet (Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1) and it seemed like it was on the verge of rebuffering the the YouTube videos whole time. I am glad I got it. A gadget is a gadget and now I know all about this one. Quote from: evilfantasy on April 13, 2014, 02:27:31 AM you won't find anything in the Chromecast to replace the Smart TV features. There is one thing my 2012 model Samsung smart TV cannot do, that I wish it could. My girlfriend and I are very interested in Spanish culture and language, and the main Spanish TV channels have web streaming of catchup/on-demand material, all the main shows, available for up to 1 month. The Samsung store has apps for these, where you can browse past shows and watch them but there is another service "en directo" where they stream the channels live 24/7. You can watch them in a Flash equipped browser. The Samsung TV web browser has no Flash, and the Samsung app store has not got any en directo apps for the main RTVE channels. but there is an Android one in Google Play, so I can watch them live on my phone via mobile internet or wi-fi. If I got an Android box with video/audio out connection I could add RTVE to my TV without buying a dish and paying a subscription. I do not know if the Chromecast will run the Android app I want, so I may look at other products like this one which runs Jelly Bean and costs 80 UK pounds (Point Of View HDMI dongle) The trouble is, it's too much money if that one app does not work on it. The Chromecast app library is very limited. http://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/devices/chromecast/apps.html It does mirror the desktop screen with the Windows software. I'm not sure if that will be any help. I'm still figuring this thing out too. There are features that are either missing or I haven't found yet.Well I just turned it on and I'm back to 'Chromecast not found'. I don't feel like messing with it right now and that doesn't help my feelings for this thing. It's working again. I didn't do anything but turn it back on. You can cast individual Chrome tabs from PC to Chromecast so it's not exactly screen mirroring. Now I'm having issues casting my phone. One minute this thing is flawless and the next it's frustrating.I returned the Chromecast. I don't know if it was defective or what but it only connected about half of the time and that got old, fast. Plus when it did connect it was choppy or the video just didn't seem to be 100%. I found a Roku LT on sale ($12.00 off) at Amazon. It came in the mail today and so far I am very happy. The Roku Android app is pretty cool too. I also found AllCast in the app store and I can share music from my tablet to Roku. It's supposed to cast video and images also but that is a little buggy. I didn't realize it at first but there are dozens of cast apps for Android and other devices. So. In my opinion. If you are looking to get stuff like Netflix or the thousands of other video content options available then I suggest Roku over Chromecast by a long shot. The remote is a pretty big bonus also. Worth a look > http://www.roku.comI have a Chromecast and used it for a short time when it was new but have since replaced it with a Roku 3 and I am very happy with that. I ESPECIALLY like that the remote has a headphone jack so I can plug in a headphone for late night listening. Quote from: strollin on May 21, 2014, 06:19:42 PM I have a Chromecast and used it for a short time when it was new but have since replaced it with a Roku 3 and I am very happy with that. I have already decided to keep an eye out for a good sale on a Roku 3. I usually support Google but the Chromecast is sort of a novelty item compared to the Roku.I ended up using my Sony Blu-Ray player that has a long LIST of free streaming sources as well as subscription service like netflix and hulu. Got my blu-ray with this smart tv player like feature for just $129. So if you are looking for a blu-ray player _ this streaming player Sony has some for affordable price. My television next upgrade will be either Sony or Samsung. I have always had good luck with Sony products. My main complaint with Sony is the totalitarian DRM restrictions they build into everything. They take DRM to a whole new level.Haven't had any DRM issues with my Sony player. Maybe its just some Sony products but not mine. I have been able to play movies/videos through Wild Media Server that the player see's on my network which is a software service run at a PC.I can't remember exactly what it was now but it was a flash drive on a Sony TV. I could view the contents of the flash drive on a Magnavox TV but the Sony wouldn't open the folder. It may have been a fluke but I chalked it up to DRM.hmm only thing I know about my TV in regards to the USB port is that the flash drive has to be formatted as Fat32 as for it wont find NTFS. Same goes for my blu-ray player and its 2 USB ports at front and back. I am limited to 32GB of data on a Fat32 partition with no other partition types SUPPORTED. Also my TV doesnt support playback of any videos, the USB port only can be used to show pictures which is sort of a waste since how many people will plug a thumb drive into their TV and go , hey look at the vacation pictures. The fact that my TV didnt come with video player support for digital videos on its USB port was kind of stupid, but the Sony Blu-Ray player makes up for the feature limitations of the TV. Also I also own a Chromecast, but havent used it much actually. I plugged it into the HDMI and used this otherwise worthless USB port on the TV to plug the USB portion of the Chromecast into the TV, so that the USB port that is otherwise worthless is able to power the chromecast for the chromecast to play videos through HDMI connection. My complaint with Chromecast is that: #1, you need a computer with Chrome browser running side by side the TV to play videos, its not a stand alone player. ( If I already have a laptop with HDMI port on it, and its required to run side by side the TV to play videos.... I might as well just plug HDMI cable directly between laptop and TV and not bother with Chromecast and forced to use Chrome browser which I dont care for with Firefox as my preference. ) #2, you are limited to what it can actually play. Not all web sites that have videos are supported. ( You cant use it to send a clone copy of your display to the TV when playing games with a wireless keyboard and mouse .... so I might as well connect a HDMI cable directly vs use Chromecast ) Pretty much Chromecast is a cheap way for people to make their TV into a Smart TV, BUT if you already have a laptop with HDMI port, its kind of pointless because you can quickly turn your laptop into a HTPC with HDMI cable between PC and TV to play the movie or video game on the larger TV screen. I have been tempted to sell my used less than 4 hours Chromecast, but after all it was only $30 and cant be worth much used anyways. |

Solve : Why The Microsoft Surface Just Died - Forbes? |
Answer» The full title is: Would I purchase the Microsoft Surface? Not anymore. And I’m not sure that you should either. From TFA (the next sentence in fact) - the reason in the TFA author's opinion: Microsoft released Office for the iPad. Quite how the Surface "died" because of that, for people who have one, I don't know. Quite how that affects people who don't have an iPad and/or don't want one, I don't see that either. But heigh-ho. Another Geek "news" story. I was in Fayetteville, NC last week and I needed something that is normally only found in office supply stores like Staples or Office Depot. Out of 4 different stores the only tablets they had out on display were Microsoft Surface tablets. Not one Apple tablet or Android OS was on display. Kind of strange? Well I look at it from a loss prevention stand point. To me it says that they can not display iPads or Galaxy tablets because people are stealing them as fast as they can display them so they GAVE up and removed them from display. The Microsoft Surface tablets are safe on display because they aren't even worth stealing. NOBODY wants them, not even thieves. BTW I never found what I was looking for... Quote from: evilfantasy on June 10, 2014, 11:33:09 AM ... The Microsoft Surface tablets are safe on display because they aren't even worth stealing. NOBODY wants them, not even thieves.May I have permission to quote you out of context? My purpose is to show that the new Windows 8 devices have Anti-Theft features built into the hardware and software. Store demos don't have all of the security features activated. It's an unregistered device. They take it out of the box and put it in Demo Mode or it arrives as a stripped down demo model. Thieves don't know that though and still steal them thinking they are fully functional. Cars have OnStar and Lojack but are still stolen by the millions each year. Thieves don't care about security features as long as the product can be sold. Apple devices have good built in security but you still see morons being tracked down and arrested soon after the theft occurs. Apple and Android products are in high demand on the black market. Windows phones/tablets, not so much. Thanks for your response, evil fantasy Awhile back Intel introduced an Anti-Theft Technology. I have not seen any mention of it here. The technology does not really give physical protection, but reduces the liability with stolen data. Under US law it is illegal to have your corporate laptop stolen, unless you have a way of dealing with the problem to protect customers privacy. Part of that is related to the new secure boot feature of Windows 8. And I understand the Intel has no plans to MAKE it work on Android devices. About the MS Surface. I wish I had on e. If any thief out there can not sell one, he can donate it to me and get a tax write off. I don't mean you , evilfantasy. You would never steal a MS Surface. I wouldn't mind seeing Microsoft Surface begin to seriously compete with Apple and Samsung. Competition breeds innovation. The CH News Editor position is still accepting applications...Just to be clear here, Geek-9pm seems to think that UEFI Secure Boot, which is designed to prevent unauthorized modifications to the boot executable on the UEFI partition is a anti-theft device. This seems to be a result of trying to imagine what the feature does based entirely on the name (Secure Boot) Rather than taking the rather unorthodox approach of actually looking up what it does. Secure Boot does not perform any form of user authentication. The authentication and code signing certificates are for the boot executable. UEFI does cover 'user-authentication' things in the same way as BIOS passwords, and works similarly to EFI. However it's notable that: UEFI is managed and specified by the Unified EFI forum, created in 2005. Intel's involvement was the creation of the original EFI, which started in 1998 with the "Intel Boot Initiative". The UEFI forum is led by representatives from AMD, AMI, Apple, Dell, HP, IBM, Insyde, Intel, Lenovo, Microsoft, and Phoenix technologies. Neither EFI/IBI nor UEFI appear to provide any "anti-theft" capabilities. At least nothing beyond standard BIOS passwords. UEFI systems can be setup with pre-boot applications that support things like biometrics if desired. Quote but reduces the liability with stolen data. Under US law it is illegal to have your corporate laptop stolen, unless you have a way of dealing with the problem to protect customers privacy.UEFI nor secure boot do either of these things. They do not provide any data protection on the system. It is, of course, possible for Pre-boot applications to be installed on the UEFI partition to support features such as encryption and/or biometrics. For the Surface for example, Windows 8 supports a Preboot "bitlocker". It needs to be enabled and used, though. It is also not in any way related to Secure Boot. It is a good example of the use of Pre-boot applications added over top of the standard Boot logic. Quote And I understand the Intel has no plans to make it work on Android devices.Android has had full-device encryption for a while . At any rate I do not like any of these mobile devices or tablets. The reason is because people think they are easy to program. This could be the case, but I've found their programming capabilities to be complete, hacked-together garbage, bogged down with red-tape, restrictions, and "developer licenses". Consider, for example, a simple case. a mobile receipt printer being used by somebody with a tablet. This is something I have had to look into myself and the fact is that the entire mobile ecosystem is a gigantic ball of garbage when it actually comes down to doing things that matter. This is partly the blame of the manufacturer in that the device doesn't seem to have any support for any OS other than Windows and Linux. Which seems fine until we notice that the Windows support is x86 only and the Linux support is only by patching the kernel and basically re-building android yourself to add the appropriate device support. However as far as I can tell no similar mobile printers support mobile systems- so I'm not even really sure what they are doing. They may be designed for use with "Full PC" laptops, rather than tablets. Which is fine until we come to the problem where Tablets are the cool way to do business now and everybody wants to be able to handwrite values into their tablet and have it be sent to the database and then have a receipt be printed on the spot. Another issue is that moving from a desktop environment to a tablet requires that- despite the hardware being similar- so many things be re-written that it completely defeats the purpose. A "App" designed to run on a Tablet cannot reference ANY external libraries at all except those that are themselves designed specifically for use on mobile. Which seems reasonable except when we are talking about things that have nothing to do with the user-interface; additionally it prevents any such "App" from ever interacting directly with any database at all. The only method of communication actually supported is HTTP. In our specific case this means that in order to support a tablet device, we would need to setup a third server, specifically for SERVING only on-site tablets. a server for the ancient system, a server of the new postgres database, and one for a web server (or of course they could be on one machine that was powerful enough, but it's still more crap that would need to be written and maintained. And that doesn't even go into the DETAILS about apps requiring signing. The way I understand it is that Secure Boot has to do with security against malware and/or OS corruption, not theft. The mobile version(s) of the Windows OS are actually a very secure virtual environment. That's why you don't find antivirus apps in the Windows Phone Store. They aren't needed because of Secure Boot. Quote from: evilfantasy on June 11, 2014, 10:31:27 AM That's why you don't find antivirus apps in the Windows Phone Store. They aren't needed because of Secure Boot. Well Secure boot wouldn't stop some of the more droll forms of adware/malware, just rootkits and low-level stuff. Drivers need to be signed also which prevents a lot of malware but they can still do damage (eg. copying files or sending them to a remote system, etc). I think another reason why malicious software would be less common is because releasing stuff to the app store requires the author to provide a lot of information about themselves to create a Developer account,(and it's not free either) meaning that it is almost impossible to upload software anonymously. Pretty similar to Android/iOS in that regard, I would expect. And for RT of course x86/x64 malware can't run. Not sure how such malware would interact/work or not on a Windows 8 Pro/x86 system. |

Solve : AT&T DSL Internet...YOU GOTTA HEAR THIS!!!? |
Answer» ok! Ok! Ok! Live with it.I don't even.... Why do you feel it is acceptable to treat someone like that on here? How do you think that that will at all help them? Quote from: breadcrumb on June 08, 2014, 10:44:08 PM Wow. I couldn't agree more. I apologize for Geek's comment and assure you that's not how we treat people on this site.Thank you both very much! Especially you Cameron! I was looking for guidance. I admit that I am a lot "clueless" about all things relating to pcs. Mom and I are on a tight budget. And so if I make a wrong decision about combining phone, tv, internet, I will be left feeling terrible. That's another reason why I am asking so very many questions before I do anything. Most of what I've learned about my pc and the internet I've had to teach myself. I have no one to show me the way. Computers did not become the "norm" until many years after I graduated HIGH school. Now my pc is about my only form of recreation, outside of tv (I am on disability). Anyway, I do plan to check with comcast about the pricing. It doesn't hurt to ask and I will also talk to AT&T like you suggested. any thanks and I'm sorry if my questions seem dumb. breadcrumbThere are no "dumb" questions, only dumb response, as Geek displayed above.OK. I will apologize. I also have DSL from the same big company and craps about twice a day and I call them about once a week. This neighborhood is in the south of town and is considered the "low-rent " area. The line noise level quality varies from near perfect to a Star Wars SOUND track. When I call for help, sometimes I get very sharp and polite service representatives that try the best that can. But the problems persist. Other times I get people who have strange accent. It varies. I have learned to just accept it. I can not change the world. But I still hope. So yes, I understand the frustration. The troubleshooting tips they provide do not bring a lasting solution. And it is the same thing over again. Unplug the modem. Check the filter. Is a phone off the hook? Some routine. I have three computers. It can happen on any one of them. Geek, I am sorry that AT&T are treating you badly! I will DEFINITELY be calling them and seeing what I can do! If I have to threaten to change over to Comcast, I will! If I can't go any faster than what I am, why am I paying for DSL? My old dial-up was about as fast as this is and definitely cheaper! Comcast is a crappy company, I know and they are expensive too! But I am going to explore every option I have before I give up! I have even considered the idea of getting cable and internet via Comcast and use one of those "Magic Jack" or "Basic Talk"land line phones that you can have for real cheap each month as long as you have broadband internet. Yes, I'm checking ALL my options out! When I run out of options, then, if I MUST, I'll throw in the towel! But NOT until then! I hope that you can get something worked out too! BreadcrumbIf you live near an airport, see if you can get a job inside. The have free Wi-Fi. If you think you're being funny, you're not. You're simply being sarcastic and I for one have had enough. Knock it off immediately.Sigh. Thanks, Allan. I tried. I really really did. BreadcrumbI got on the phone with another ATT tech yesterday. Long story short: my DSL filter/splitter was bad. I went to Radio Shack and bought another one ($21.49 plus tax!!!!...almost fainted!!!!!) and it has helped a lot. Nonetheless, the acceptable speeds under ATT's "Fast Access Lite internet" is pathetic! They only promise .22-.76 on DL and .06-higher on UL., so they said I am in the perimeters of the plan I pay for when I had plugged the DSL line directly into the phone jack. The speed then was download .58 mbps and the upload was .11 mbps. It looks like I'm off to Comcast. If I go with them, I can return the splitter to Radio Shack (according to RS...I'm not cheating them, guys!) Comcast has a plan where I can get phone (wireless...not thrilled about that), internet, and 120 channels cable tv for $100 a month for a year then it goes up to $125 for second year. However, that includes the DVR which we are currently paying $18 a month for! Most of you have been really nice to me and so I wanted to let you know what happened. i will also let you know when I find out about the Comcast for 100% sure! Thanks! BreadcrumbShame you had to do that...AT&T gives those filters out like candy... You shold have 1 on all lines...wether they are connected or not for best results. Return the 1 you bought and ask them to stop by and grab a handful...it's part of the Service Contract. |

Solve : Upload Leak - Akamai Technologies? |
Answer» Trying to plug an upload leak on my one system that I detected through watching my network GADGET on my desktop of Windows 7 64-bit. *Yes I know I shouldnt be using gadgets, but i have had this one for years with no problems and the gadget exploit is only a problem when using dirty ones. I'm not sure why you would use Wireshark though. seems pretty wasteful. Resource Monitor can let you see all the active TCP/IP Connections and the read/write on them. You could use that to find out what process is actually doing the transferring. I am KIND of wondering what you mean by wasteful? As for it has logging capabilities so if a packet is transferred to a destination with a few packets or a short burst of packets to an IP such as what I was seeing, using Resource Monitor its always changing and so you have to be quick at writing down the info, unless there us a text dump log available to look at later? I have always liked Wireshark in that if something was strange and infrequent, I could set it and walk away and come back and stop the capture and then sort or search for a strange activity and then sometimes see clear text info that was in the packets if not encrypted etc such as long ago with a video game that I found was sending all chat info in the game clear text across the web. I was tipped off on this clear text issue when a problematic for nicer terms co-worker mysteriously mentioned something later in the afternoon after my lunch break that no body would ever have known about. I was playing World of Warcraft on my lunch break which was allowed off the clock. There was a RP fake marriage in the game event at the park in Stormwind which is now gone since Cataclysm, but I was playing along with this in character and there was a girl IRL who was good friends with me and we PLAYED RP roles that would have appeared as though we were together even though we are not with no relationship outside the game etc and both married happily etc," its just a game ", but this nosey problematic co-worker asked me if I was happily married less than an hour after there was text messaging in game for this event that to an onlooker may have appeared more serious than it was. This onlooker was this nosey co-worker who was sniffing the LAN traffic and was watching the clear text chat and everything else of the World of Warcraft chat channel, and he was no where's near my computer in my office on my break to look over my shoulder etc.... he clearly was sniffing packets in a nosey way and extremely stupid to come to me about an hour later that same day and make a question statement of "Are you happily married?" .... which points directly back to the RP event that went on during my lunch break. Initially I thought he planted a keylogger on my system, but there were no keyloggers running as well as no hardware keylogger hack/data theft tools used on the back of the computer. I later found out that he was watching peoples traffic on his lunch break since he was a "Rogue Employee", he ended up getting fired when problems started to occur in ACCOUNTING for this business about 2 years after I gave my notice and moved on. The tool he was using to sniff packets was Wireshark as well as a few other tools that probably should not have been in the work place which were hacker tools. So he is the one who pointed me to Wireshark not personally, but because on a late night as systems admin I performed an audit on his system and it listed all these tools that didnt really belong in the workplace some like Wireshark which are GREAT tools but could be used for wrong as well as others that I will not mention here because I dont want to promote any hack tools. The scarry part of this is that while he was fired for accounting problems that were related to theft within the company similar to an Office Space Movie type of theft, I caught word through some individuals that he is now working at a credit union as an IT person there and who would ever have thought that a person fired for theft by one company that didnt press charges but should have, would end up working in a place where there is LOTS of money. This guy is an extreme idiot. I can only hope that he is thrown in prison if he does again what he did at the prior employer. Quote from: DaveLembke on June 13, 2014, 03:07:36 PM I caught word through some individuals that he is now working at a credit union as an IT person there and who would ever have thought that a person fired for theft by one company that didnt press charges but should have, would end up working in a place where there is LOTS of money. I work in financial governance. You should tip off the credit union about him, anonymously if need be, but giving enough detail about his "expertise" that they know where to look. I don't like to think of a snake like that ripping off a credit union. Chances are he lied to get the job. I have always liked Wireshark in that if something was strange and infrequent, I could set it and walk away and come back and stop the capture and then sort or search for a strange activity and then sometimes see clear text info I use ngrep for this; it's available for unix/Linux/Windows - you run it from the command line and it outputs to the console or you can dump to a file e.g. ngrep [-bla -bla -bla] > packetsniff.txt and later on hit ctrl-c to stop the dump and then you can open the text file in an editor or copy it somwhere. It has options to make reading the text easier.e.g. -W byline and as the 'grep' part of name suggests you can supply a grep type pattern to filter on or you can use findstr. Solve : Wireless headphopnes? |

Answer» I am looking at getting a pair of WIRELESS headphones what would I like for in them when buying and that will hook into HEADPHONE jack(not RCA or bluetooth)? I just want to know what to look for on the package. Right now I do not care about reviews or if you think I should buy them or comfort. I am going to be using them on a tv that does not have RCA outputs and the headphones is between the HDMI and component in. I have tried an adpator and it will not work. Here is the tv http://www.insigniaproducts.com/products/televisions/NS-19E310A13.html?supportTab=openAlso the RCA adapter like http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103709 is too BIG to fit into the small spaceYou might be looking or referring to a Headphone with a 3.5mm jack for the Audio PORT. The 360 angle on the Insignia TV is too vague or no zoom options with regard to the Audio in question but it looks like its the top right(?) with headphone icon when in back view or you can correct me if I was WRONG though.yes |

Solve : Interesting 2003 article on P4 3Ghz socket 478? |
Answer» Found this kind of funny: The Pentium 4 3.0C uses the same FC-PGA2 form factor as previous Socket 478 processors, and while I love the IHS (Integrated Heat Spreader) the pins on the bottom are fragile and tend to get bent pretty easily. If possible, it would be very interesting to see chip manufacturers add a protective skirt around the outside edge to shield the pins from damage.... but maybe I'm just daydreaming here. At this link below from Jun 11 2003 I bet the author did not expect INTEL to bring out the LGA socket 775 3 years later after this article was written!!! http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1403 I like to read old articles SOMETIMES to find stuff like this. I was looking up old info on a Pentium 4 3.0Ghz socket 478 to see how hard they could be overclocked since a friend of mine has one and asked the question of overclocking. Overclocking this CPU to us who have modern computers, we look down at from our powerful beast computers as a waste of time for a very small processing power gain since most of our systems benchmark these days 5x to 36x or greater in processing power to that of a Pentium 4 3Ghz. But to a user who has been happy sticking with their old trusty beast, an overclock to them has its pros even THOUGH to us with much faster systems we pretty much state its time to get a newer system that you dont need to overclock and even a low end processing power modern Celeron would beat the pants off of this CPU. Fact of the matter is that my friend doesnt need to overclock, but he wants to just to EXPERIENCE it and learn how to do it, and if the Pentium 4 lets out its secret smoke in the process it will FORCE him to have to get a newer computer anyways. |

Answer» Seagates is also ACRONIS... Quote from: DaveLembke on April 08, 2014, 02:14:20 PM Good to know the work around for Windows 7 with sectors aligned to 4k boundaries. I have a Buffalo brand NAS, but its not NTFS its XFS so i cant use this at the get go, but if I ever use freenas etc to make ONE out of an old box, that is NTFS its good to know of this 128GB .vhd file mount work around. However use on an external USB NTFS formatted drive is probably the path I would take. If you use an NTFS formatted VHD on the NAS, when you need to restore from the image using a Windows Recovery Disk or a Windows install disk, you will need to get the VHD mounted so the image restorer can see it, this would consist of 1. Opening a console, seeing what drive letters are spare 2. Typing STARTNET to get network access 3. Using NET USE to give the NAS share a drive letter (you will be asked for a NAS password) 4. After that using Diskpart to mount the disk. You could roll this up into a .cmd or .bat script and have it somewhere the recovery disk can see it I found my notebook... 1. Boot from recovery disk 2. Select "System Recovery Options" 3. Select "Use recovery tools" radio button 4. Next > 5. Command Prompt 6. Startnet [Enter] 7. Type Diskpart [Enter] 8. You are in the Diskpart environment. Type LIST VOLUME to get a list of mounted volumes Type EXIT [ENTER] to quit Diskpart Select a spare drive letter, here I use R: Your NAS name and path will be different... Use QUOTES if the share path has spaces... 9. NET USE R: "\\GOFLEX_HOME\Goflex Home Backup" 10. You will be asked for a NAS password 11. Check share is mounted e.g. DIR R: 12. Diskpart again... SELECT VDISK FILE=R:\imagefolder\image.vhd [Enter] ATTACH VDISK [Enter] LIST VOLUME [Enter] Now you should see your virtual disk mounted as another drive letter EXIT [Enter] and you can use the Windows Recovery Environment image restore feature which will see the backup on the VHD on the the drive whose letter you saw in step 12 Thanks for clarification and sharing exact steps from notebook. Saving this all as a pdf to revisit later without having to dig for it in search. Also Quote Seagates is also Acronis..., I didnt know this. I thought seagate had made their own drive clone utility. But I guess why do that when you can PAY Acronis to put the Seagate name on their limited version product. I haven't used this Seagate Drive Clone utility since like 2005 when I bought a brand new 160GB IDE HDD and the CD came in the box with the drive. In 2005 it was someone else's...i have it in my notes somewhere...i believe it was around 2009/10 they made the Acronis deal.Hi all. I haven't read the entire thread on this post, but gather people are having difficulty with using Ghost 2003 with SATA drives, Vista and Windows 7. Just to put my two-pence in, it isn't really a problem. The first thing you need is the final version of 2003 "ghost.exe" which is 'build 793'. That will give you SATA support. (I managed to find it by looking through Norton's archives) Secondly, having obtained that version and created your boot disk, in order to use Ghost 2003 with XP (SATA), Vista or Windows 7, you should first boot up and when you have the main screen of Ghost.... select "QUIT" to get to an "A/:" prompt. Then type in the following (disregarding the quote marks, but recognising there is a 'space' between the switches you need).... "ghost -fdsp -noide" (ghost[space]-fdsp[space]-noide)... then hit 'Enter' This will bring you back to the main Ghost interface and will allow you to take images, or restore as required, having made the necessary adjustments to Ghost to allow for SATA or, indeed, Vista/7. I am CURRENTLY running XP, Vista and 7 on seperate PC's and using Ghost 2003 without any problem at all! You may also like to have the mouse facility for this program to make life easier. Check out 'http://nightowl.radified.com/bootcd/bootcdintro.html#P1' for instruction. Hope this helps in some way. Reckless .... very interesting info shared.. I will try this out with a laptop I have running Windows 7 that I need to create a image of. Will be a neat test. DaveLembke...... If you run into any problems in obtaining the 793 build of Ghost.exe 2003, I could perhaps email you a copy of my 'bootcdp1.IMA' file (1,440 KB) which you will simply need to burn to a bootable CD (I used Nero). This image is already setup to support mouse use within the Ghost interface. Let me know if I can help. PS... It should be said that I have no idea if this will work when creating an image on a USB drive. I do not know if Ghost 2003 has USB support. I use a combination of extra internal HDD's and/or partitions on which to store images. |

Solve : Looking for Basic IT Training? |
Answer» HI, I want to set up a small IT business which will offer help in anything from setting up a laptop/desktop through to creating accounts on social media and such like. It's basically something I've been thinking about for some time because I believe there are many people (particularly the over 50s and retirement age) who simply don't know the basics, especially with Social media like facebook, Twitter, etc but desperately want to be able to COMMUNICATE, make friends, stay in touch or simply keep themselves occupied. What I'd like to know is, are there any courses or websites I could look at that would help me get some grounding and help put a plan together. I have a reasonable IT knowledge but I just wanted to see if there was anything specific out there that could help me build something professionally with structure. Any ideas would be grateful, no matter how trivial. Thanks DavidIf there are any community colleges in your area you could always propose a workshop or a course to instruct. I have run a few workshops before where people pay as little as $25 per seat for a 1 day event for 4 hours of instruction and hands on, or $125 per seat for a 4 week ( 4 course day ) workshop which is more involved with homework and a final at the end for a certificate of completion. Your are able to use the resources of the community college so you only need to bring the content to them, and the community college gets a portion of the take and you get the difference. Best of all is that you do not need a teaching degree to run a workshop. You simply just have to put together a well structured presentation and then submit that to the community college to see if its something that they may be interested in allowing you to instruct there. As as in my case for my first workshop there, there was a mock demonstration which I performed with an overhead projector, and dry erase board and gave hand outs and had them follow along with it. This then sold them on it as a well structured workshop and so they agreed to promote this and I got 60% of the take and they got 40%. Following this workshop I also instructed others and it was a nice setup. Workshops that I offered in the past were: - Computer Basics ( 1 day, 4 hour workshop ) - Introduction to HTML ( 4 days, 1 day per week workshop 16 hours total ) - Introduction to Microsoft Office 2000 ( 8 days, 2 days per week, 4 hours per day, for a month workshop.. with MS Word, MS Excel, MS Power Point, and MS Access with 1 week for each as a bare minimum basic introduction ) The Computer Basics was a good one which wasnt too bad. Some people were totally lost sitting in front of a computer which was running Windows 98 at the time back in 1999. And it was mainly a follow along and questions answered as given. The Introduction to HTML was the course I had the most fun with. While it did not cover Java Script, I allowed people to add it into their work if they wanted to go beyond just HTML. This course was the best flow I guess I could say to content to cover per period of time given to cover it. The Introduction to Microsoft Office 2000 was really really tight to pull off all the content in that given period of time, and it assumed that the student would work on lab projects at home and bring them back with them on the 2nd day of each MS Office product week in which we went over it all, answered questions, and gave them a quick open book quiz. MS Word was easy as cake. MS Excel had its difficulties at times with either a student who worked with Lotus 123 all their life and is now working with MS Excel in which there are differences some of them cross supported and some not as well as anyone who stuggled with simple algebra it was apparent were going to really struggle and so I had to stay over once to explain simple algebra for them to understand the formulas. Power Point was a fun course that was pretty easy to instruct and very little problems here once they were familiar with how to work in the WYSIWYG environment. MS Access though was for about 90% of the students well beyond their grasp of knowledge but it had to be covered. It made them familiar with what MS Access was, and how to make the most simplest of databases, control the content that can be entered, and generate a simple report. The most simplest database I used was an Inventory where each item had a Stock Number, Description, Count on Hand, and Price etc. The other issue with this course was that only about 10% of the students owned MS Office 2000, and so some of them had to come to the community college throughout the week and work in their homework using the college computers because they couldnt afford or didnt want to buy the software that they were learning. Of the 10% that had outside use of MS Office 2000, most of them used their computers at work to do their homework. Then there was the issue of some people still using Office 97 and learning 2000 and working on projects and running into issues due to the changes as well as EXPLAINING to them that if they wish to work on this project at home that they will need to save their files as 97 format instead of 2000 to their 3.5" floppy disks. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ So my suggestion is possibly to get workshops going either at a community college or somewhere else that you can host them, and then if they are successful and you have the money to invest in creating a training facility, invest it then, however it may be better to tap into another facilities already existing resource for computers, software, and place/space to hold the trainings than it is to host them yourself. Lastly, I did have some students that asked me if I was available to tutor them 1 on 1. And while this may work out for some, I found this more difficult than training many at the same time. The biggest problem with 1 on 1 training is that you have to be paid for what you are worth, and many of the people who need 1 on 1 training cant afford to pay you say $20 an hour to train them which is what I charged 13 years ago. For some individuals it worked out well and they ran with the information and eventually got to a point that they didnt feel the need for me to guide them, while for others such as one woman who claimed took a promotion at her job, it was a bad situation. The bad situation started off with that she was promoted to a secretary job and this job required her to use MS Office, and prior to this she was an assembler for a manufacturing plant. While she knew how to turn a computer on and know how to check her AOL mail at home on her Windows 95 computer, the work computer she had was running Windows 2000 Professional and MS Office 2000, so she felt lost. To get the position the employer asked her if she had computer experience and she said YES because she had an Acer computer at her home that was on the internet with dial-up, and they asked her if she had worked with MS Office before and she said YES, when she told me that she said that because she wanted to land this job so badly for the $5 more per hour at $14 per hour from $9 an hour job, that she had to LIE to them to impress them and get the job. And now she is trying to cover up the lie by getting trained as fast as she could on this all and this way the lie disappears. I was shocked at what she was telling me since, most positions like this are ones that are awarded and then they drop stacks of paperwork on you do enter/file etc as a secretary position holds. She was hoping to master it within a week for Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point. I had to explain to her that unless she is one of those people who see's something once and never forgets it and can speed read through books and retain the info, that she is not going to master it in a week. Long story way shortened, I instructed her for a week, 4 hours a NIGHT, by bringing over my laptop that I had Office 2000 on it since she didnt have Office 2000 and I gave her a crash course on mostly Word and Excel. She said that she understood it all and we agreed that at the end of the week when she was paid she would pay me for my time in which I gave her a discounted rate of $15 per hour $60 per night of 4 hrs of hands on training for the 5 nights I helped her. So she owed me $300 for my time. She said oh, I forgot this week is rent week, I will pay you next week instead if thats ok, and I being the nice guy that I am said ok, but I really need to be paid next friday. That next friday came and went and so I placed a phone call and her phone was disconnected now. I then knew where she worked and went to pay her a visit about the $300 bill and she wasnt there. She never worked for this place ever and they dont know who she is. I then go to visit her appartment and she is not there, and a neighbor heard me knocking and said that her and her room mate skipped out the one night and left the appartment with all their posessions and they dont know where she went. I said did she ever happen to state where she worked, and they said oh yeah she worked at this one company, and that one company was the same one that she told me that is a lie. So be sure your paid daily for 1 on 1 lessons vs allowing it to go a week before paid in which you could be out like $300 for your time. For workshops everyone had to pay up front, so it was a good deal, but for 1 on 1 tutoring its paid after the instruction and you have some risk in getting stiffed. While this is probably a rare situation, it happens. Quote from: dgreen on June 27, 2014, 07:18:33 AM I believe there are many people (particularly the over 50s and retirement age) who simply don't know the basics I am way over 50 and it really tees me off when younger people express surprise that I know anything about IT. Even when they are being nice and say things like "Hey, you know a lot for a guy your age!". Quote from: DaveLembke on June 27, 2014, 04:40:20 PM So be sure your paid daily for 1 on 1 lessonsWhile this is probably a rare situation, it happens. Quote The ones who burned me like that were always the pretty ones... Yes, she acted nice and was pretty, but "Every Rose has its Thorn"... That's excellent advice Dave. I'm going to take all that on board. I've certainly experienced the scam merchants before when I was looking for a telesales person to make calls for my business, being the nice guy I am I let this 'older gentleman' do his own thing, use his own pitch and choose his own ours. What a mug I was. I came back to him a week later and he submitted his hours saying he did 70 hours of work. However he had not made any appointments and when I did a couple of spot check calls to see if he'd actually called these people he hadn't. I refused to pay him for 70 hours and compromised to 35 but he insisted on the 70. It got quite messy and when I went to his flat to collect my equipment etc he started whacking me with his walking stick because I only paid him for 35 hours which was actually 34 hours more than I should have paid for. He quite clearly hadn't done anything and was looking to rip me off. looking back on it I suppose it was my fault for letting him get on with it himself and for not being firmer in the structure he followed. I'm still too nice in business and I'm still chasing clients for payment. The one thing I do find useful now Is to always let everyone know that I'm half Sicilian on my father's side which seems to always help in collecting the cash ;-) |

Solve : WAMP Ver 2.5 - No More XP compatibility ='(? |
Answer» Just was looking into the latest WAMP server download and this detail caught my eye. From: http://www.wampserver.com/en/#download-wrapper WampServer is available for free (under GPML license) in two distinct versions : 32 and 64 bits. Wampserver 2.5 is not compatible with Windows XP, neither with SP3, nor Windows Server 2003. OLDER WampServer versions are available on SourceForge. I guess I wont be updating WAMP on my Windows XP SP3 SYSTEM to newest version and will continue to use the old version on the XP system. For n ow WINAMP might not be available on the official site. But softronic and others have the older versions of WinAmp. Another place is OldApps site. Try here: http://www.oldapps.com/winamp.php?system=Windows_XP I am happy with the older version of WinAmp on my Windows XP SP-3 and see no need to change the OS for a newer version of the best media player ever. Hello Geek-9pm ... its actually WAMP not WinAmp.. WAMP is a Windows based Apache, MySQL, and php server that is useful in building and testing web page based transactional DATABASE with php as the logic for the dynamic html. WinAmp is a media player that I haven't used in quite some time.My bad. I thought you meant the media player. |

Solve : Home Electrics / RCD Protection / Fusebox? |
Answer» I have a device that needs to run 24/7. It takes two power supplies in case one fails - then it continues running from the other power supply, uninterrupted. What is a RCD? Residual Current Device - (RCD) the name in Britspeak countries. In the USA & Canada, Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI), Ground Fault Interrupter (GFI) or an Appliance Leakage Current Interrupter (ALCI). Often combined with overload protection in one device. The poster's use of British spellings on other posts and here, the "live, neutral, earth" names, suggests a British or British Commonwealth location. Geek's point about legal/wiring code issues is a good one, and here: Quote Another solution would be to run a new circuit directly to the fuse box ...of course you meant "pay for a qualified electrician to run a new circuit..." and issue the relevant paperwork, to avoid legal issues and possible insurance cover problems. If you are in Britain, this applies in a home, let alone a workplace. I'd add a UPS dedicated to each power supply of the redundant power supply server setup. Also would have an electrician come in and give you a non-RCD power feed for this server setup according to code. Generally they can install a special outlet such as a orange colored outlet that is for non-RCD power going back to breaker box with a standard breaker in the panel that wont trip unless there is an overload condition. With other outlets white or beige, this orange one would stand out as the special outlet for the setup that must stay live with just overload protection.Whats the device that needs on 24/7 ? ?Thanks for the replies. Yes this is a UK installation. In addition to what Salmon Trout correctly pointed out, RCD = Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI), the following terms might also help (if not please ignore): Earth = ground Power supply = AC/DC Adapter I think DaveLembke's suggestion is the closest, but twin UPS systems would be a large expensive compared to the RCD devices I originally wanted to use (search for eBay item #130909849440 if you want to see this simple and cheap type of RCD device). Twin UPS would also be a work-around to a problem which should really have a simpler solution. We rarely have power outages here, so I don't need UPS for the purpose of power outages. By the way, any electrical work I would do myself. It's legal here in the UK (I already rewired the whole building, DESIGNED and installed a gas central heating system and installed the gas boiler, I only needed a qualified plumber to test and connect the last pipe from boiler to gas supply). But I've SINCE renovated all the rooms and really don't want to install a new circuit just to solve this technical problem. I've seen something called an RCBO which is similar to an RCD but also includes overcurrent protection (for example, eBay item #261537206838). If I bought two RCBO switches, and connected each power supply unit to one of them, then when there is a fault - what item would trip first, the RCBO or the RCD at the main fuse box? I think I just need to understand why the RCD furthest away tripped first. Is it something to do with that RCD being closest to the earth rod (this is the metal rod that GOES into the ground next to the main fuse box)? Or is there a millisecond rating for such devices, and the fastest device trips first? On further investigation, it seems to be a matter of timing. I FOUND an article where a similar problem was discussed, with RCD units used in series. All RCD units were rated 30ma (like mine are) and the most popular solution was to replace the 30ma RCD at the main fusebox with a 100ma time-delayed RCD, and then have each circuit protected by its own 30ma RCD or RCBO device. This ensures discrimination and prevents the whole installation being knocked out. In my fusebox I actually have 2 x 30ma RCD units. So I plan to replace these with 2 x 100ma rated RCD units. I can build a small sub-fusebox locally next to my device, reuse the 2 x 30ma RCD units by installing them inside it, to feed the two power supplies. So this should be a very cheap fix, just the cost of 2 x 100ma RCD units and a small bare fusebox enclosure, all of which I can get pretty cheaply 'used' off the Bay. Well again, this is all theory. Once I've installed and tested it, I will post an update to confirm if it actually worked |

Answer» This is relevant to technology advancement. This means privates companies can PUT telecom satellites into orbit and reduce the cost of global digital data transfer. Hopefully, it may reduce the cost of Internet service over time. By Brian Berger | Jul. 22, 2014Full Story and Video. Private companies have been launching satelites for years... Quote from: patio on July 22, 2014, 08:22:51 PM Private companies have been launching satellites for years...... and bring the cost down each year. Quote SpaceX and another private launch company, Orbital Sciences, are the beneficiaries of a recent shift in the American space program toward privatizing more routine missions – such as the transport of supplies and eventually people to and from the ISS. While this upcoming mission is only a preliminary test, SpaceX eventually hopes to dramatically reduce the cost of launching cargo and people into space by eventually making both the first and second stages of its rockets reusable. Last year, the company estimated that once its rockets are ABLE to land back on earth and, after re-fueling, quickly be re-launched, the cost for a trip to the ISS could drop to as low as from $5 million to $7 million. |

Solve : Video Conversion Tape to Digital Questions? |
Answer» I am using a Audio/Video Capture device to convert old family videos from 8mm and VHS to Digital and have some questions ( mainly how to preserve quality and also have the size as small as possible ) Analog Video Capture to Computer The DV option makes for insanely large videos almost as if the data is RAW like fraps type of videos. MPEG-2 is probably the best option from what is available. Ok.. now for questions: 1.) Should I try to find a different data sample rate which I am guessing the 6Meg setting is for the MPEG-2 preference or should I be recording in a different format? 2.) Should I create these videos with DV instead of MPEG-2 and then use VirtualDub to compress them to h264 or some other better sized and hopefully minimally lossless format? 3.) Should I take the 5.5GB MPEG-2 videos and compress/encode them with VirtualDub to a better smaller and hopefully minimally lossless format, if so what is the best to work with for the format and settings? 4.) Should I save these as DV or another format and then use some other toolto make them smaller other than VirtualDub? 5.) Is 6Meg datarate for MPEG-2 format of VHS and 8mm tapes overkill since its far from High Def, and if so what data rate do you feel is best to go with before I start to notice a loss of quality? (*Obviously I could just record samples at different settings and compare, but figured I'd post this in case anyone knows the setting is which anything greater than a certain datarate just makes for wasted HDD space? ) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Also just wanted to state that if anyone has or is thinking about BUYING one of these, the CPU processing power is important!!! This device works way better than the prior EasyCap device I had. The EasyCap I wasnt very impressed with the quality of it since there was loss in quality from VHS to Digital etc, so it got set to the side. But I found this device with better feedback for capture quality and bought this a few months ago and finally have time to use it. I tested this on a spare system I had with a comewhat modern Sempron 140 2.7Ghz single-core with 2GB RAM running XP Pro SP3 and while it did operate and run this software and capture device over USB 2.0, I was finding that there was at the bottom of the video capture software a frame COUNT that was climbing. It stated that the affected frame is placed behind the other or something like that and I was like ok, maybe its a buffer for frames and it will assemble it all in the end. Well in the end of recording 2 hrs of video I played the digital video file and the family video started off ok and then within about 3 minutes I saw that there was a timing offset between video and audio where the mouths of kids and family members at events were mis-timed. So I then went and installed the software/drivers to my better AMD Athlon 4450B dual-core system with 4GB RAM running Windows 7 64-bit and ran this video capture and there was 0 frames added to this frame misplacement counter I guess it is, and at the end of 2 hours the video was perfect with audio/video timing. I jumped ahead to the end of the video vs watching the whole 2 hrs of it, but on the weaker CPU system it was a problem that started small and was more obvious later in the video. So I assume that the content in between is perfectly timed as well. Thanks Did some testing and right now it seems like 3mbit's for MPEG-2 is where a quality of picture for video is noticed from the original and 4mbit's for MPEG-2 audio/video capture does not appear to show a degradaition between original video and the VHS ot 8mm tape. So I DROPPED it to 4mbits and it made for smaller video files. It would be nicer if I could get them down to around 1.5GB per video without loss, but right now it looks like 4mbit MPEG-2 videos are like 4.3GB in size for 2 hours of video. I guess I will be capturing these at 4mbits for the VHS and 8mm tapes. Maybe the higher setting is needed when working with better quality recordings to avoid loss. If anyone has any suggestions on how to get the file size down further without loss I'd be interested in which format and/or tool to use to do so. Quote from: nico1992 on August 05, 2014, 03:03:48 AM You can try some online convertersAn online converter to convert a physical video tape? How on earth would that work? |

So i question him on some things, then i give him a little flack, and accused him of being some kind of scammer. Then i said goodbye and hung up. These are very very common in Great Britain and other English speaking first world countries. They operate out of countries like India, Phillipines, etc. The large call center has a computerised calling system with your country's phone books loaded. The system dials numbers at random, and when a called number picks up, the connection is routed to the next waiting operator, who sees the number, name and ADDRESS of the listed subscriber on his screen. He then asks to speak to the subscriber and whatever the REPLY, begins his speech about detecting some kind of scary security problem with "your computer". They operate on a number of assumptions: most people in Western countries have a computer running Windows; most of these are not computer savvy; many of them will have had some kind of issue or problem recently. They don't actually KNOW if you have a PC or if you do, anything about it. (How could they?) They sometimes say they are from the "Microsoft security department" or else from "your ISP". If you challenge them to name the ISP they will guess. If they still have your attention by this point they may try to win your belief that they know something by making you open a command prompt and type something that will produce a long list of stuff, and tell you to look for something on the last line of the list, something that they know is always there on a Windows machine. They will say this "proves" you have a problem. The aim is to get your credit card details to pay for a fake "service" that cures nothing and may even introduce spyware. You may find regular payments for a "subscription" coming from your account. A side effect of reaching this stage is that you are now identified as a gullible person, a "mark", and you can expect all sorts of further calls. I lived in the UK for some time and calls like this were an issue. To be honest, getting scammed or conned in general was an issue. There were always warning about things like this in the news. Good you went with your gut and aren't gullible like lots of people are. My rule of thumb is, if I didn't pay for it, then it's probably not good for me (at least when it comes to tech stuff). This will be locked I want it deleted It'll stay. You have a history of not liking your responses and wanting deletes.I would like it deleted please. I was forced to make a post that I did not want to make so I would like it gone |

Solve : Unable to access my gmail after moving to another country? |
Answer» Hello I am completely fed up with google's useless security policy for emails. I hope there is any method to solve this. Keep in mind those protections are in place for you... I seriously doubt if you contacted them with enough info that this couldn't be resolved... I smell something fishy. Thanks Dave, I ACTUALLY contacted someone there who has my laptop as well and hopefully we will make it work. I am just sad that at the time I created that email, all this nonsense was not required. I will update if the issue was resolved. Patio: Please next time, respect members here and do not throw accusations by smelling and sensing and guessing fishy things without solid basis. I know google are trying to increase security duhhhhhhhh...but I darn know my password then why on earth the other stupid complications. Or they just want people to live in one place!!!1st off...i respect all Members here... 2nd...here's what i stated:: Quote I seriously doubt if you contacted them with enough info that this couldn't be resolved... So maybe you can respect the fact of my doubts... Quote from: patio on August 23, 2014, 02:54:07 PM Keep in mind those protections are in place for you... I think i only said it once... Your issue is with the mail PROVIDER but it seems you have made it an issue with us because you didn't care for the responses you recieved. My apologies for that...i guess... and i wish you Luck. Quote from: patio on August 23, 2014, 07:09:35 PM I think i only said it once... Whether you said it once or twice, it still was an implicit accusation against me. Secondly, I replied to Dave's suggestions which meant that I listened. Thirdly, if you ever noticed, am not a new member here and I know CH forum long time ago and I know it is not the kind of forum that helps with 'fishy' matters. I was only asking here cuz I tot someone might know something 'legal' that could be done and my acceptance to Dave's statement that I could be out of luck proves that I am not looking for fishy mishy sushi ways that you immediately accused me of....I hope I made myself clear now and good luck to you too.Update: Well..it seems i locked myself out for good lool. I contacted someone there in turkey who used my laptop and we were asked to change password which we did. I sent a password but apparently they failed to enter it as sent... Bottome line is: do not change your password when your family are noobs at computers :-D. Over and outttt.Update #2: Somehow it WORKED! I was just trying to enter the password I sent to Turkey which they made a mess of and gmail kept saying incorrevt password until I tried the old pass and google for the first time allows me to change the password from here which I did. One setting I did change though on my phone is not to let google locate me using wi fi source location...maybe that is why i was not asked to verify this time...do you think this is why it worked?Since you are in ... congrats by the way!!! I would go to your account info and write down whatever alias/name you used and write down your security questions and answers or reset them and write them down. This way next time you have this issue you will be able to verify that its you and have no problems regaining access. |
