Solve : need internet explorer restored?

Answer»

Hi  -
I down loaded Google Chrome and deleted Internet Explorer 11.  I do not like Google Chrome but now I can not get Internet Explorer  11 back. Can someone give me some instructions?  Thanks for any help.       Bob

PS  -  Can you believe111  I got it back.  I don't know what I did but I just kept trying things till some thing worked.      BobGood Evening (or whatever time it may be for you)

In order to solve your problem we will need a few more details.
what do you mean exactly by this? can't you redownload? or can't you run the installer? or does the installed version not show up?

ShadyYou didn't uninstall IE. Go to START - RUN and type: iexplore.exe (then press ENTER). What happens?Allan  -
I did as  you instructed and my home page appeared.   OK  more details:   This may take some time but I will keep it as short as I can.  I get one of these at random times but it is usually when I am looking at my home page.  (1)   A problem with this webpage caused IE to close and reopen the tab. (2) IE has stopped working.  (3) Suddenlink is not responding.  Suddenlink connects me to the internet.
I concluded that the problem was in the IE.  Now if I deleted the IE and got another BROWSER and later I could download a good IE and my problem would be solved.  I all ready have Google Chrome in my list of programs so I called it up and from my list of programs I deleted IE. When I downloaded a new IE the download said it was successful.  However IE never showed in my list of programs or any place else.  I then went to Internet options and set my home page address to what it was days ago. Now I am back where I was.   Thanks for your response.        Bob
  SHADY Cat  -
Notice my response to Allan. Let us WAIT for more infro.  Thanks for your time.    BobSounds like a connection...travel to speedtest . net to check your connection speed...patio  -
I ran several SPEEDTESTS and the download was 51.63 while the upload was 4.53.  The only connection I saw was grade  B.  The speed was in agreement with what I am paying for.  Does this tell you anything?       Thanks   BobYes...it means the connection isn't the issue...so that's ruled out.

Solve : Smartphones are now free. If yuou are broke.?

Answer»

This hardly news, so I put it here. But it is news for menu.
Get a Free Smartphone With Your Food Stamps.

True, if you are on a social program for the poor in the USA, you can get a free Smartphone from DOZENS of carriers who are now in the free phone program in the USA. Sometimes called 'Obama Phones'.

Or, if a adult family  member in your household  no longer pays up,  he/she can qualify for a free phone after leaving home.
So if they don't work, kick them out so they can get a free phone.
Alright, now the serious side.

Or, just search for Free gov phones

I have one with METRO pcs.
It allows me to watch Netflix without going over the data limit.
Because watching movies is so important to us poor folk

I was the beneficiary of food banks in the past, but no longer need their services and have a bit of extra, when I go shopping I will sometimes buy two of some of my non-perishable items, and put them in the donation bin at the front of the grocery store. On one such occasion, A rather distasteful woman accosted me for putting spaghetti sauce in said donation bin. She said, and I quote, "Poor people don't deserve to eat things that taste good".

I mention this because the way you've presented this information is very much the same. I get a strong impression that you fall into the camp of "Poor people don't deserve nice things"; In this case, Smartphones. Realistically, smartphones are quite affordable, but having them subsidized by government social programs makes a lot of sense since choosing a good contract can be very difficult, with a lot of hidden costs, interest, etc. that can be associated with them and which can drive a lot of people who can't afford them into unexpected debt. This doesn't mean merely the unemployed, but those who operate on a shoestring budget through a minimum wage job that pays a quarter but involves 10 times the actual work of more 'cushy' jobs, and, of course, as you are surely aware, those operating on a pension.

BC, I admit you are right. You point is well made.
Some family  MEMBERS told me today when anybody goes to a  social agency they will ASK for a phone number and an email. If you don't have it, they can not contact you.  So yes , a phone is now needed even just to be poor.  Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 20, 2016, 10:24:33 PM

Or to get out of being poor. If you are unemployed you can be told of a vacancy and called to interview the same DAY. I'm sure there is a net payback for the government, when you add up the improvements in re-employment rates (more tax being paid, goods being bought) and savings in postage and administration.

Solve : Smart Phones Down, but Dumb Phones Up!?

Answer»

An NBC TV station gave this report.
iPhone sales down, 'Dumb' phone sales go up
Link:WRCB
Quote

"People are tired of having the same smartphone as everyone else," said Maxime Chanson of Lekki, a website that sells vintage mobile phones to a high-end clientele. "Some people have had enough of the ultra-connectivity of the 21st century and are looking for a phone that gives them some space for their private life, without being constantly interrupted."
Hey! I did not put this in News. I put it here  in other. The fact that many people hate smartphones is not news.
But my question are:
Why can't Smartphones make friends?
Why are they so hated?

The argument could be made that the incursion of more general-purpose capabilities onto smartphone devices has changed their capabilities and featuresets enough that they no longer fit the bill for those who are looking for a mobile phone.

That is, they aren't looking for a device that let's them send tweets or VIEW INSTAGRAM or comment on FACEBOOK or play games, or browse the Internet, but rather something that is a phone that is mobile. The Nokia 6110, for example, is an older phone which fits that requirement.

Another useful advantage is that with their more restricted featuresets their batteries last longer. For some consumers who work in remote areas, the 150+ Hour sleep time of a 6110 for example wins out over any features of a modern Smartphone where the battery life is relatively low even in sleep mode. ADDITIONALLY,  because of it's simplicity there is no concern about whether there are background apps or other apps consuming battery power unnecessarily.Never even thought about it, but the Nokia 6110 is a bit of modern history.
It had different styles.
Image from a Google search.

[attachment deleted by ADMIN to conserve space]I saw an article a few days ago saying that the current iPhone sales spell disaster for Android. I didn't read the article...

It's always the same thing for mobile phone news. iPhone sales drop and it spells disaster for everyone. iPhone sales peak and it spells disaster for everyone but Apple.

Solve : Transferring "Selected" Files Renders Them "Invisible"?

Answer»

Okay.  So I have an older HP Pavilion dv6, and I got a newer HP for Christmas.  I have all of my important documents (word documents are the most important, but also pictures) still on my Pavilion, but I also have them backed on a WD My Passport Ultra external hard drive.

Back when I first got the Pavilion (this was a while ago, so my memory is a little fuzzy) a lot of my files and folders ended up looking weird.  They opened just fine, but the icons were translucent like when you select or CUT them.  A GOOD portion of my files/folders had the strange icons.  I can't really remember if it was just the files/folders transferred from my even older Toshiba or my previous external drive, or if it was RANDOM, or what.  But the files opened fine, so it was more of an annoyance than a problem.

So when I got my WD My Passport, I copied all my important files from HP Pavilion, including the weird looking ones.  No problem, they showed up weird on the WD (still translucent, looking "selected") but they opened just fine.

Now, when I plug my WD into my NEW HP, all of those "selected" looking files are invisible, including my entire "Documents" folder.  They are definitely on the drive.  If I search for a particular document title, it shows up in the search results and opens just fine, but I can't just browse around and find it.

Now I was able to fix the "invisible" folder situation easily by creating a new folder and just transferring all the files from the weird folder to the new normal one.  However, with individual files that are weird-looking, I'm just not sure what to do.  They don't even show up when I search them by title.

For example in one subfolder of My Documents on the WD drive, there are 11 documents visible when viewed from my old HP Pavilion, 4 of which are weird looking.  When viewed from my new laptop, those 4 weird files don't show up, leaving only the 7 normal looking files.

The only way I can even conceive to fix this is to open the word documents on my Pavilion and copy their contents into a new document.  That sounds like a pain in the *censored*.  Even worse would be to take all of my pictures, open them in Paint and resave them.  Please tell me there's something else I can do.This is an attempt to give you some suggestions.
First of all, you should MAKE it clear that you are using Windows 7 and not Windows XP. I think your computer was made around 2010, which means it would've had Windows 7 on it and not Windows XP.
In any case, we you TRANSFER files from one computer to another you lose some of the associations or attributes associated with the files. This occurs when you're using the fat 32 structure, and which is often used in backup methods.
It is not clear what you mean by translucent. The icons associated with files are either found in the file itself or somewhere else in a icon library. The icon library is not transferred from one computer to another. Most likely some of the files you have had unusual icons that were found somewhere else and not part of the file itself.
Bear in mind I'm trying to give you a quick answer. Without some more details and explanations it's hard for me to guess what you mean by an invisible file. Sometimes files are hidden for a specific reason. If that is the case, you can override that particular behavior by setting up your new computer so that it shows all files even files that are supposed to be hidden.
Please provide some more detail about what you mean by a file being invisible.
of allMy HP Pavilion originally had Windows 7, but now both laptops are operating on Windows 10.  And by "invisible" I mean "unable to be seen with the eye".  The files exist on the WD hard drive, they take up space, but they can only be viewed when the drive is plugged into my older Pavilion.  They are not viewable from my new laptop.Doesn't make sense if it's Win7 or 10 that shouldn't make a difference...
Find them on the older PC and write down the diretories/folders they are in...
Then on the new PC find those folders...Some more info needed about:
WD My Passport Ultra external hard drive.
How did you use it? It is often used to save and restore to the same computer. Did you use it to transfer files?

Perhaps you are not used to how it works. I do not mean to question lour intellect, but if you are new to using that device,  it  can confuse  even experienced users. Have you used it before to transfer files from one PC to another? If so, ignore what I said.

EDIT: I found this:
 http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/UM/ENG/4779-705099.pdf
I will look it over r and see if there is some trick to use it for transfer.

They sound like Hidden files. The new system is set to hide hidden files. Your previous system is not.

On the Windows 10 system in File Explorer, go to the "View" tab on the ribbon, and check off "Hidden Items".

If there is no reason for them to be hidden you can right-click the affected files and select properties and then adjust the file attributes.Did you use the software that came with the WD backup device? It is intended for doing backup and restore on one computer. Using it to transfer files to another PC requires  some attention to detail. You would not transfer the files using Windows explorer, but instead use the WD software to extract the files off of om the image.

Solve : Recent PR about Low-Cost and Free Internet Service.?

Answer»

On the COMPUTER News I already posted some information about this topic. In doing more research it seems tmany firms do have low-cost plans, but do not spend a lot of effort advertising. There have been a number pf PR announcements for the big guys about how they are going to cut the PRICE of low-speed Internet service.
The principal players are:
AT&T           https://consumerist.com/2016/04/22/att-launches-its-own-10-internet-access-program-for-low-income-households/
Comcast       http://www.cheapinternet.com/low-income-internet/internet-essentials
Cox            https://www.cox.com/aboutus/cox-in-the-community/connect2compete.html
Sprint         https://www.sprint.com/apps/switch-save/?ECID=SEM:Google:p:2016_Q2_Brand:Brand_Core_BMM:Core_Sprint:sprint:Broad:tfn95037/&gclid=CI7Z6IOCn80CFZFcfgodtCkEUA&gclsrc=aw.ds#!/save-50-percent
T-Mobile     http://www.t-mobile.com/cell-phone-plans.html
Verizon        http://www.verizon.com/home/highspeedinternet/

For more... look at this:   http://www.cheapinternet.com/low-income-internet

Some odd web site seem to be tied to the big guys. Read carefully.  Also, some ISP are y different sub services. Example Metro PCS is PART of T-Mobile

Notice that many plans are only for 3G and 4G phone service with data. Not many offer hard wire to your house.
If thou see errors in this list or see better information, please post.

Solve : Two G-MAIL Accountgs with Two Tablets?

Answer»

My dear WIFE got a Android tablet from here sister. So I went to PUT here gmail account on it. Something went wrong. G-mail  insists that I have to use my account.

What I want:
My g-mail on my android 10 inch tablet
Her g-mail on her 7 inch android.

Why is this so hard? What am I missing?
Shall I forget g-mail and try another service?

Quote

G-mail  insists that I have to use my account.
Are you talking about the Gmail app for Android, or using a web browser?
No, I don't mean G-mail in my browser. I mean on Android Tablest
I want to have G-mail on one  Android tablet.
And, I want another G-mail account on another Android tablet.
Somehow, g-mail thinks I need just one account on both tablets. I am not sure how that happened. Possibly I signed into the Paley Store with the wrong account.

I am stuck with one account on both Android tablets.

I need two accounts, each on a different Android. Then I will be happy.
Then just review and MAKE neccessary account changes on the one you are unhappy with...
You may have to contact the vendor for them to make changes. Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 11, 2016, 10:05:33 AM
No, I don't mean G-mail in my browser. I mean on Android Tablest
Android tablets and phones have a web browser. Usually Chrome is built in. You can go to Gmail in the web browser. There is also a Gmail Android app which goes directly to Gmail and does nothing else. It has an icon which is a red and white envelope. Which are you asking about?

Solve : International CyberAttack. USA will lose.?

Answer»

This was re-rum on some PBS stations in the USA.
The is not recent news, but is the most important thing this year and last year.
Massive Cyber Attacks are no only possible, it is happening.  Here is a disturbing report for PBS.
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/next/military/snowden-transcript/
The title is:
Exclusive: Edward Snowden on Cyber Warfare
By James Bamford and Tim De Chant on Thu, 08 Jan 2015

The fact that the report is-from last year does not reduce the import of this subject. lease read it and think about it.

If you can find the PBS video, it shows how an attack was sent against a  high security nuclear facility that has no Internet. In a cyber attack, i dont see there being any winners just a bunch of losers. If one were to happen it would likely just CHOKE up the internet with nonsense to bring it to its knees. Thing is that with DDoS attacks they can generally be located and blocked with the right hardware that is able to associate packet origin being that from a DDoS attacker.

The big online game companies out there frequently get attacked and are able to put a stop to the outages.

Biggest concern is with automation being taken over through a hack such as power grid controls, but this is quite a stretch to pull off if its even possible. Years ago I read about a short outage that was the result of some hackers. Hopefully the system has been hardened since to block this problem.

Without electricity just about everything comes to a halt. Gas stations cant pump gas without it etc unless they have a generator etc. But fact is that manual overrides I am sure are still in PLACE for power grids to in an emergency adapt quickly and bringing it back online. Nuke power plants also while automated are very offline for the most part from what I have read as well and so its not as if a hacker would be able to force one to operate outside of its safe operating conditions as well. Many fail safes.

The stock market being down for a bit might cause a slump but everything would be back to NORMAL once the DDoS attack is snuffed out etc.

Zero-Day attacks additionally while bad if one was discovered and exploited; due to a very diverse range of systems out there running many different operating systems, the exploit would only be able to target a specific group or family of systems but not all. The best attack would be one that targets all systems connected to the internet no matter of hardware and operating system. Currently only DDoS attacks work in such a way to target all hardware no matter of make etc.

I personally am not worried about this. There are very good tools and configurations in place to prevent issues or minimize the problems.

The only CyberAttack the US has to worry about is from a huge solar flare...from which there is absolutely no defense stopping it...

So why worry.OK. Don't worry.  Anyhow, worry would not help.
In the interview Edward Snowden on Cyber Warfare the point was made that international cyber attacks have taken place and can not be be fully documented.

These attacks are not for a few individuals wanting  to make a point. Rather, they are international secret government fabricated asphalts on specific targets. Some details did get to the media, but the evidence was not the kind of proof that most people would find conclusive. It looked liked something unlikely had happened and nobody was at fault.

To get the point, one has to watch the PBS documentary and pay attention.

Of course if you don't believe it, it makes no difference.  Nothing you or I do will stop it.  Someday in the near future some important thing will fail, blow up of otherwise put a  heavy load on some nation or state. And it will look like an unlikely happenstance. And thee will be almost no trace of the cyber attack.

The alternative is to have nothing run by any kind of electronic controller. And that will never happen until it no longer matters.

Here is yet another site that talks about the overall idea.
https://home.kpmg.com/si/en/home/insights/2016/05/how-vulnerable-are-governments-to-cyber-crime.html
But it only  looks at  the organized crime aspect. The big danger is from government organizations. Here is a more specific document.
http://www.infosecurity-magazine.com/opinions/how-can-you-fend-off-a-nation/
Title:  How Can You Fend Off a Nation?
by Gavin Millard Technical DIRECTOR at Tenable Network Security.
Rather giving a short quote, I recommend you u spend three minutes reading his article. He is real serious.

But why stop there? Since we're talking about things for which there is going to be zero evidence for a less simple explanation then, say, hardware failure or poor maintenance, why don't we just go ahead and say the U.S will perform a false flag cyber attack against itself? You've already thrown logic and critical thinking out the window to suggest that "Oh, sure, it MIGHT be simple, easy explanations for weird behaviour in our infrastructure, but, no, it was a cyber-attack". Before suggesting the improbable you have to eliminate the probable. You can't just jump right to some ridiculous explanation when much more simple explanations exist for something. Once you start doing that you may as well start applying it everywhere. You lost your important projects in a hard drive failure, and subsequently couldn't recover 10 year old data you needed from an ancient DVD you burned? Sure, you COULD attribute it to a standard hard disk failure and your own poor backup procedure, but that's what the IMMIGRANTS who are sabotaging you to take your job want you to think!

Somebody working in Network Security who profits off of others fear, uncertainty, and doubt, spreading fear, uncertainty and doubt? Who would have expected that?

I agree! And one ought not to disregard facts because they are grim. Sometimes things that are less probable do really happen. In truth,  it falls inside the laws of probability. So one ought to y gatherer as much data as possible.

So how would one evaluate this report?
http://nsarchive.gwu.edu/NSAEBB/NSAEBB424/docs/Cyber-027.pdf
Well, it is from the Army, and all know that  no thinning allowed in the Army.
So the whole report must be a hallucination.
It says, in part
Quote

government in any cyber attacks. The circumstantial evidence does lead to
the perception that the Russian government was behind or supported
recent cyber attacks. When countries or organizations stand in opposition to Russia they are likely to receive a cyber attack in order to influence their position.
The high likelihood of future cyber attacks, the ease of conducting cyber attacks,
and the amount of networks to conduct the attacks make this monograph relevant for study.
Government and organizational leaders need to ensure that their cyber defenses are ready to  protect private information, ...

Solve : Almost bitten by a fake adobe flash update?

Answer»

Almost bitten by a fake adobe flash update. This came through a link from facebook about a guy who made a underground bunker hidden by a shed outdoors. I decided to check it out at a website called Answers dot com and about the 3rd page in I was given what looked like authentic flash update in which it wasnt totally unexpected. So I clicked to save file and BAM AVG Antivirus detected it as BAD BAD BAD... I then looked up and saw URL was NOT ADOBE!

Screenshot of it attached. Be careful with Flash updates that look to be real, that are FAKE !!!

Also I am surprised that whoever set this bogus adobe spoof with malware site set up encryption to get the green lock but didnt try to hide the URL better by spoofing that in some way as is seen in 2nd screenshot where I go to the website directly and get a blank page. Its only when following a specific path that you are given the bad webpage with the download trigger.

[ATTACHMENT DELETED by admin to conserve space]Thanks for the warning. I thought that sort of thing was past. But sit is still going on. Maybe Adobe should change the update message with way to verify the message. If that is possible. If they had a protected update method that would be COOL. Similar to how Microsoft Updates work, that as far as I know, no one has been able to spoof that yet to my knowledge to force malware to systems through a patch tuesday etc.

Surprisingly even video games out there that require frequent updates are somehow able to WARD off rampant virus distributions too where they have updates over a customer base torrent etc such as World of Warcraft where anyone could be a seed for an update for another to download and they are able to keep this clean through checksums I am guessing. Here is the click bait that grabbed my attention at facebook which lead to attempted infection:

seems unexpected to me. I've only ever seen that particular page setup when explicitly visiting Adobe. I've certainly never seen it show up arbitrarily while browsing. Most sites which for whatever reason need Flash Player will provide a download link, which makes it easy for me to go back and never visit that site again.

I too thought that, however not sure if they constantly monitor after approval to make sure a site doesnt go rogue. Oddly this websites home page is blank and the only form of entry to a hit of a page is through the deep dynamic name looking path. I havent attempted to crawl on their site to test for other points of entry to other hidden paths/pages mainly because its a waste of time and I dont WANT to find any hidden payloads at them.Awww...c'mon...where's your sense of adventure gone to ? ?
Authentication certificates are primarily used to allow SSL and encrypted connections that prevent Man-in-the-middle attacks; they aren't a declaration by the certificate authority that the site itself is legitimate, just that you can connect to it securely without being "overheard".

Solve : Unknown icon?

Answer» HELLO, everyone!

I have got Nokia 2700 Classic since yesterday and I enjoy using it. I need an answer to two QUESTIONS. A photo named "nokia_icon.jpg" is attached to the first question and "nokia_number.jpg" file is connected with the SECOND question.

One: what's the icon showing an upward arrow indicating on the screen? I guess that it appeared first, when I TRIED to send a SMS message but failed first time. I was using Bluetooth but not Internet today and the icon stays the same, so what does the icon mean?

The next question: is there any use of the number "5" in the corner? It is the ordinal number of the messages icon in this menu, but I don't understand what is it for. I have been using a mobile phone before which has the function to choose items from list using the number pad instead of navigation buttons. That kind of thing does not work on my Nokia 2700C-2, it was Samsung E1200, a really crude phone C: which had that ability.

Sincerely,
SlawekPL

Solve : Update, Pop-up and Notification overload. I am sick of it.?

Answer»

All these pop ups. updates, with  mystification make  anger me..Really. I am,getting headache, earache and *censored*-ace. Plus my computer tells me I no longer have permission to do something I did a month ago. While typing this, my tablet burped to tell me the battery was fully charged. Oh My!

Note to mention that messy thing that I don't even understand that was in the lower right corner. I has soft blue tiny type. I guess the soft blue is to APPEASE me. How sweet!

Somebody should make an answering machine for dubious notifications. The PC would only allow a voice message to be STORED in a place  out of sight and the USER can check it later. If ll he wants to.

Now if the message has a place where is says 'check here to never SEE this again', I do click. But some of the most ANNOYING and brazen reminders just will not let you brush off in a polite manner.

This might be a factor in drug abuse. I am going to take something.....

Solve : Where and How to Buy a New Windows 7. Yes, 7, not 10.?

Answer»

I want to recommend to my friends and others to buy Windows  7  if possible.
So, do PC makers offer Windows 7 as an notion?
How about buying an old junk PC that has a product key?
Or just do not buy a new PC, get a good refurbished model with y installed?
No, I do not want to recommend a private version. But how does one know it is a pirate?
What about LEGIT users who want to dump Windows    7 for a few dollars?

This is not a bash on 10. M

How about buying an old junk PC that has a product key?

While people have done this, its against the Microsoft EULA. I had a run in with Microsoft years ago with XP on a HP DC5000 tower that the motherboard got fried. Yet the RAM and CPU were still good. I replaced the motherboard and moved the CPU and RAM into the new cheap MSI socket 478 motherboard to get the 2.8Ghz Pentium 4 back up and running. Well the computer was fine until I went to install Windows XP Pro and use the key that was on the side of the box. I was directed to contact microsoft as for there was a key activation issue. I CALLED microsoft and talked with a guy in india and he asked questions. I answered them and he refused to give me an activation claiming that the motherboard was what the license was valid for and swapping motherboards meant that I would have to buy a new copy of Windows XP Pro. I got off the phone with him and tried again and got this other guy. I was asked same questions and i answered them and the other guy also was not going to activate it, but I got talking with him that the CPU which is what the EULA is licensed to is still the same, so shouldnt i be ok. He then PUT me on hold in which i thought i was going to get disconnected, and he came back asking a few more questions. He granted me an activation over the phone given that the only thing swapped was the motherboard and that the CPU and computer case was the same.

Additionally a person I knew went to use a dead computer from the local dump and use that key for their new build and found out that others must have used the key on the system the same way before dumping it. So if someone buys a dead computer thinking they will use the key. There is no guarantee that someone else hasnt done the same with the key figuring the system is dead and the key is free for the taking, and then not be able to activate the Windows installation and have a paperweight junk computer with a junk key that microsoft will not activate.

If buying a PC for Windows 7, I would buy a used working computer with Windows 7 and verified that the system has been activated and key is genuine with microsoft or buy it from a known good seller of refurb computers in which its GUARANTEED to have a good key and maybe even a warranty on the HARDWARE.Some time back, Microsoft had a program to allow others to fix up old computers and load Windows 7 and get a product key for that PC. Some vendors did have warranties for up to one year. The machine I have now is one of them. Severasl times I have swapped out the hard drive and have not had any problems with Microsoft about the COA. Ut is a 64 bit CPU, but just happens to be one that can not run Windows 10 64 bit.
Th Microsoft program is well documented and seems to be still active.

Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher program

Quote
There are several options for refurbishers to become a member of a Microsoft Refurbisher program. Members of the following programs are able to supply computers with genuine Microsoft software preinstalled to businesses, consumers, and nonprofits.
Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher program
If you are a large refurbisher who can commit to a minimum average of 1,000 PCs shipped through our program per month, this is the program for you.
The program makes available Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 7, Office trial Single image, and Skype for refurbished devices. Microsoft Authorized Refurbishers are listed in our global directory, and they get a Microsoft account manager, engineering support, and their own marketing incentive programs.

The above would suggest that Windows 7 is still available. This was confimed by another reference. But f MS does not want people to get Windows  7, you would think they would edit the information published.

Best Buy is well known. Here is a link:
Refurbished Desktops with Windows 7
This is not an endorsement, just some helpful info for those that want Windows 7 and are willing to use older hardware. The COA is not transferable. Even so, most of these can take more RAM and upgrade to a bigger Hard Drive. If you get one with a standard case, you can upgrade the power supply.

Wow, that is moving a LOT of old systems... There is a place locally to me    http://wincycle.org/   that sells refurb computers and has a store front, and I doubt they are selling 1000 or more computers a month as for a friend works there and tells me about the computers. Somehow they are able to be in this program and I have been told that relicensing systems with Windows 7 costs only about $10 per refurb computer to make a XP or Vista system have Windows 7 for the license fee. And thats how they are able to sell Core 2 Duo computers with Windows 7 that never came originally with 7 for under $100 each.

By the way... I havent bought any used/refurb computers through them because i feel the price tags are a bit high for what they are offering. Additionally I have no problem getting computers cheaply or free from people after they upgrade and are looking for a way to dispose of their old computer safely. If I am given a dead computer I will fix it or strip it of good parts and toss out the junk parts. Last count, I had 15 working computers ( 3 pentium 4's, 7 dual cores, 2 intel atoms, 1 Athlon quadcore, and 2 AMD FX 8 Core systems ) ... I only bought 5 of them, the other 10 were acquired cheaply or free.
Have downgrade rights gone away? I bought a new machine exactly 1 year ago from a large UK retailer that was advertised as "Windows 8.1 Professional downgraded to Windows 7 Professional", (I took the Windows 10 upgrade 1 month later) and i see that Microsoft still shows downgrade options.

Solve : Movie's Part 2?

Answer»

What are your thoughts about the movie ExMachina?

While watching a show last night about auto's that drive them self I wondered if self driving cars might not help human beings to re-think how they think about  building AI robot's.

It's interesting to look at the process from a new angle once someone thinks about the whole thing from a not so usual way to assembling differently than what once was a common way of building them.Havent seen this movie yet, but watched the trailer..

Biggest concern with AI is it will eliminate jobs. I started off in electronics in the early 1990s and got into automation and control systems. These all were based on repetition for manufacturing mostly which no problem there, manufacturing has been this way of using machinery to reduce manufacturing costs for a long time.

However my job was outsourced outside the USA to cheaper employment after being there for almost 7 years and doing very well at your job. Reason we were all told was for the company to become more competitive and to increase the profits which will in turn make the stock holders happy.

Well if AI comes along to handle tasks that normally humans are required for, now you can work towards even lesser dependency on humans to work and they can work around the clock, and not have a constant heavy cost on the shoulders of a company to pay wages, instead there would be a heavy initial cost which is the same with any manufacturing plant with automation and then quickly if successful products are manufactured the cost of the machinery and AI automation pays itself off. Now you have even lesser humans working for the company, yet human population is ever increasing.

Jobs that are the easiest to automate are the first to go... so Truck Drivers, Bus Drivers, Cab Drivers, and the such. Food stores already have self checkouts, but an AI monitors for theft instead of a human to oversee it, or even better the cost of RFID drops to pennies and you go in, grab items off the shelf and load up your cart and as you walk down an check out lane, every RFID within a small perimeter crys out its ID and a fast AI register system works with you to tell you how much and any coupons and you pay and then your cart goes to an automatic bagger. In one side loose items and out the other side bagged items ( hopefully the eggs and bread not on the bottom )

As AI gets better more and more of the easier duty jobs are replaced and unemployment rises. People go back to college to try to better themselves but the market is flooded for dentists and doctors. And forget being a lawyer, lawyers have been replaced with Watsons that can piece together which ever is best for a client for whichever defense or claim there is and very little margin for error. The judges also replaced by AI in which whatever is deemed fair rides ( as long as there is no corruption )

It becomes an endless cycle of elimination until you end up with what is best shown on the movie Wall-E. A bunch of lazy people dependent on AI and Automation. The captain on the ship is even pointless in that movie as for the AI could do without him but that wouldnt make for a good movie watching a pile of lazy people being served by technology almost completely dependent on it for their own survival because of lazyness and greed.

And then the danger of skynet if the AI turns. Elimination of the human race and creation of a technological electromechanical race which is better fit for LEAVING the planet and working without air and environmental extremes. It can take forever to get from point A to point B for a ship of AI robots but it doesnt matter. When they get to their destination they take ownership of whatever land it is and like ants build a colony and replicate and move boulders etc over and over again not caring.

An AI race should also have the ability to adapt fast and creatively make changes to its racial existance as needed, more durable, faster, stronger, etc.

It comes down to the fact that if we are ever able to make a human like AI that can make decisions and be creative and its not regulated to minimize the negative impact it would have. Then the human race will force itself into self inflicted obsolescence.

Would the AI robot race be intelligent enough to not create something that creates self inflicted obsolescence for itself. Well what does it matter for us, we wouldnt CARE, we would all be long gone the way of the dinosaurs as part of the planetary evolution of life. At what point does AI and robotics become life? In college I had a professor that SAID that even fire is a living thing, while it exists that is. Given food ( fuel ) air (oxygen to turn fuel into energy output) it works changing the food/fuel into something else, it replicates itself to get bigger which both makes it stronger but also leads to its extinction when it uses up all the fuel or oxygen and burns out.Now taking that to the far, far side....
Imagine that more humans are out of work....
Imagine that more humans go hungry....
Imagine Humans can not afford to raise children..
Imagine the Human Population dwindles down to a few thousand...

Now imagine millions of Auto Trons with nothing to do!
ha ha ha geek that was good.  I think the idea that AI will eliminate jobs is ridiculous on the one hand, and irrelevant on the other.

When it comes to AI being involved, we're talking about jobs that cannot be automated- we're not talking about, say, assembly line robots, who perform the same repetitive task, replacing a human and doing the work faster, and more efficiently. We're talking about trying to replace the decision making process of a human with an AI.

That seems reasonable, until we remember that the most advanced AI systems we have today have the decision making ability and comprehension of a 4-year-old.

Let's take some examples here.

Loss prevention officer. They usually watch security cameras and look for people shoplifting, and detain them.

I don't think any of these decisions can be made by an AI. First, the task of actually seeing when a customer is taking something from the store is not an easy one to process. The AI would have to keep track of countless variables. That person is going into the changing room- when they come out their shoes are different, or they are wearing a different shirt. Or they are wearing the same clothes but don't have the ones they took into the fitting room. How can it come to the decision? It can't. It could say that it suspects that customer of shoplifting, but additional information is needed and honestly a lot of what is involved in that sort of job requires a fair bit of SOCIAL awareness and the ability to recognize social behaviour patterns that can vary from individual to individual. Such an effort to replace it with Artificial intelligence would likely hit many roadblocks, not the least of which would be the enforcement Roomba tazing a pregnant woman for stealing a medicine ball from the sporting goods section, or maybe it breaks a toddlers arm "detaining" her because it saw the child put a candy bar in her pocket when her mother wasn't looking. I don't know about anybody else but I would argue that glorified Roomba's going around breaking the arms of small children is not something we should be working towards even temporarily. I don't want to read news articles about such an even going "Well, I know this is tragic, but as you can see, we've come a long way. It's no longer breaking their necks! Let's have a moment of silence for the 2078 Preschool AI massacre"

Not that those sorts of things don't happen with people. But the important factor there is that somebody can be held responsible. You can't sentence an AI to community service. It's an AI. It's not going to understand anything except that which it was programmed for. It won't understand that it was bad. It won't "feel" ashamed. it won't feel anything. For any normal person breaking a toddler's arm for any reason is going to be a critical turning point in their life. For an AI, it will just be Tuesday.

AI can replace very simple decisions- we've had AI for years in tasks such as deciding whether a Tomato is ripe, or grading eggs. But we're nowhere near the level of having an AI replace real, human decisions involving people.

Also, regarding the depiction of AI in movies. Hollywood cannot even get today's technology right. an Artificial Intelligence turning on it's creators makes a great plotline. That's really all that matters. At this point most of the "AI will destroy us all" talk seems about equivalent to Y2K. Back them people attributed computers with a level of intelligence they didn't have. There were articles explaining that aircraft's on-board computers would see it was 1900 because the date switched wrong, and then the plane would intentionally take control from the pilot and crash the plane because it would know it isn't supposed to exist. That's pretty much what happens when laypeople who barely understand how to save a word processor document start theorizing about neural nets.Wow, that went to places I didn't expect, very interesting. That said I wonder if AI'S aren't thought about in the eye of the creator; "human like" would probably be the starting point, to do human like activities and to work seems like a given. But is that all there is?
One way to consider CREATING a human like AI is to go about it from the subractive side of the creation meaning there are aspects that we do not want the creation to posess so we start by thinking of what it will not be.
That said when reading religious accounts of creation, man is spposidly created in the image of god. It seems to me that our ego would more than likely start there so like God we would more than likely start with the additive side and there in lies the problem. It's, like knowing all that is wrong with human beings we would still start with creating it like we are now. Not so sure that would be such a good thing.

There's another movie I just watched called " Lucy ". In this movie a girl is abducted and cut open to smuggle drugs across international borders. The drug is a " nootropic " aka a  " smart drug ". Long story short, the bag breaks inside of her and she gets real smart very quickly. She figures out how human thinking holds humanity back which made a lot of sense to me and in an obscure way applies to this discussion. If we start out with erroneous data then the end product will have errors.
Humans need to get their head on straight before they create a Frankenstein monster in the dorm of an AI

IMO, "We were created in the image of the most powerful entity to exist" is an expression of ego, not the origin.

Solve : Storing SD Cards?

Answer»

I have a growing collection of SD cards and a couple of MicroSD adaptors. Some came with a basic plastic case, but OTHERS have not, just the retail packaging. I am concerned theese will in time get lost andd/or damaged without a better storage method. I have seen cases on Amazon but many get very mixed reviews and i am uncertain what sort to go for. I was wondering how others stored their SD cards and what was best to use for storage. Thanks.Just put them in sandwich bags or anything you like - it really doesn't matter. They're not going to go bad.I have all mine in something like this which cost less than 1 US dollar in a supermarket. It's not really to "protect" them, they don't need it, more to stop them getting lost. Mostly they are in equipment such as phones, cameras, etc. but when I swap them they go in my LITTLE box with a lid.

There really isn't an exact science, SD cards are generally tough so the main risk is losing them, not them getting damaged.  I just have a pile of them on my desk.  That said, you really shouldn't be trusting an SD card to store important data, you should always back it up to a PC - SD cards can fail and when they do it is basically impossible to recover the data.I just store mine in zip lock baggies with thumb drives. I started labeling them Letters on Backups and Numbers on others so like the 3 backup sticks are A B and C ( rotational backup ABCABCABC so oldest backup gets overwritten with newest data but the 3rd is there so I can go back even further than 1 week etc, and others with data on them are 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 etc and so if I need a file I can look at my XCOPY output file and search for a file in this text file and when i find a match I know which thumb drive or SD Card has that file I need etc.thanks for the replies

As i mentioned in my original post i have some cards with cases which are mostly fine, its just i dont have enough of them! I looked at purpose made wallets with POCKETS for storing just the cards but wasnt totaly happy with this idea, i felt like it would be easy for cards to either fall out of the pockets and get lost of muddled up or get stuck and risk being damaged getting them out to use. There was also no real way to label the cards satisfactorily. Did though like the idea of keeping them together, as i am often misplacing them in the individual cases.

I have now found and bought a pack of empty individual cases and plan to store them in a sealable plastic box to keep them together. I can label each case as i have done before.Pill bottles.

Solve : recovering my DCIM folder?

Answer»

i deleted all the pics from my phone after i COPIED them to my computer, through my computer( as in when they were connected via usb).

now i found out not all the pictures were copied.

is there any way i can RECOVER those files? in my phone or computer?

thanks alot in advance  Maybe your phone does not have a way to recovery deleted pictures. But if it does, the following might help. It is for Android and Apple phones.

How to recover deleted photos from your iPhone or Android
Quote

One thing to keep in mind, though, is that once you've deleted the pictures or other files, it is safe to not use your device until the data is recovered. When a picture is deleted it is not deleted permanently, but rather it just opens up space for more data. Any OPERATION on your device then—including taking photos—can generate new data and overwrite that space, which would make lost data unrecoverable.
Read the full article for details.
That is the best I know about.

You should be able to use a program like Recuva - https://www.piriform.com/recuva to try to recover the files.  Use this as soon as possible and avoid using the phone until this is done, the more you use the phone the lower the CHANCE of getting the data back.

Is this an Android phone?  Is it signed into a Google account?  If so it may back up photos to your online account.  iPhones can do similar stuff with iCloud if you have set this up.

Solve : New Scam is Slick, Clever and Dirty.?

Answer»

One word. Saferweb

It is a grade AA SCAM.

If you Google it, the first 10 or more hits will look good.  It is not a new breakthrough technology. It is not a needed service. In is not honest.

One user says...
Quote

The initial page advertised two years for $4.95. AFTER I was charged the confirmation informed me I was charged $130. I emailed BILLING, but after reading multiple reviews saying that won't work I just called my credit card to report the unauthorized charge. Total scam.
There are many more like that. And it is not really new. Just new to me.
SAD to say, the App is still on the Google Play Store.

Speaking of SCAMS, there are many out there. Many use Internet advertising.
https://www.scamguard.com/list-of-scams
Top 10 Scams of 2016

My question is: Why did Saferweb not make the top ten?  The Tech Support cold calling I have had people ask me about. Still waiting for them to call me and play with them in a honey pot.

As far as scammers so, I have seen them in online games a few times. They hit you up pretending to be the game company. And  fact is that the game company would never ask personal or credit card info. I played along on a female character I was playing once that was targeted. I guess the scammer thought that all female avitars in games have a female at the other end of them. I was told that my account would be locked if I dont confirm my account with them.

So I played the innocent female pretending not to know any better and was like ... "ohhhh really oh no ... I dont want get locked out of this game" and then I would sidetrack the subject and ask about in game content questions to be annoying...

They would bring me back on subject and I would be scatter minded and SIDE track them again in text chat in game.

Over and over they asked for info and I would be scatter minded but no so scatter minded that they would know that I was playing them, but just enough to be annoying and waste their time. I eventually shared a fake name ( Anita Honeypot ), and address, and told them I dont have a phone number yet because I need to buy a trackphone still. I dont have much money. In which when i said I dont have much money I was asked do you own a credit card and I said yes with a $10,000 limit... why? And that baited the scammer along to want to not hang up on me but go for the gold, that $10,000 limit credit card I was waving in front of his face but he didnt know the numbers yet.

So instantly he went to the credit card bait subject and was like ok I need you to share with me your name on the card.. in which I played him and said well dont you have my name already, I gave it to you earlier?

He said oh yes yes... thank you.

But can you please confirm the name on the card. I said oh ok.

Anita Honeypot  (* I was wondering if he was going to pick up on the Honeypot as the last name as to that he is getting played and Anita like ... I Need A HoneyPot, but he didnt pick up on this. )

And waited and then he was like ok I need the credit card number next. I was like ohhh ok well hold on I need to go get my purse. Meanwhile I made myself a sandwich and placed him on hold for 5 minutes.

I then actually went and got my wallet so I could start off the credit card with the correct leading 4 digits so it would look real to him. So I said it was a Discover Card and he was like ok.. now the number please.

So I said 6077 ... and hit enter key for first block... Note 77 is wrong and it should be 11. He instantly picked up on this as wrong and asked if its really 6011. I was like OHHH sorry I am looking at it without my glasses on.

He was like thats ok, ok the next digits please

so I said 97B0

he is like 9780. I said no its a B I know for sure, im squinting my eyes and I see a flat side to it so it must be a B. He then said its an 8. I was like oh... wow I need to get my eyes checked out I guess. So you have any suggestions of a good place to go for that that is cheap?

He didnt answer that and INSTEAD asked for the next group of numbers. I said ok its 8675309 ( *Jenny ... but didnt tell him the Jenny reference.)

He was like so its 8675 309 your missing a digit

Oh I am let me see

Nope I think thats all digits

He said the next group of digits should be 8 digits and not 7

I said oh well there is an 8 in it see 8675309. It starts with 8?

He then got frustrated and started saying give me a break woman, its not that hard ... ok give me the next 4 digits

So I said 8675

He said ok good now the next 4

I said 309

He then was like there must be another digit woman

I was like ohhhhh my credit card was run over in the parking lot once and its slightly damaged... Looking more closely I do se a digit there

He said finally ok what is it. I said well it might be a 0 or a B, the plastic is squashed.

He said thats fine an that he will test at his end whether its a 0 or a 8 for me, and he reminded me again that there are no letters in credit card numbers. I said oh thank you so much for checking on that and can you tell me what it is when you find out and he said yes.

So next came expiration date.

He must have figured he was that much closer to scamming me out of $10,000

But another road block. I said ok it says

05/14

He said its 05/14 and I said yes.

He said mam your card is expired

I was like oh... well i havent used it in a while hmmm

He was like do you have another credit card. I said no. I dont use my card much and the last time I used my card I bought myself a bunch of different colored glittery nail polish and it gave me a headache.

The guy then said Woman, Your Giving me a headache... Give me a valid credit card number NOW!

So I said ohhh I could use my boyfriends card i guess right?

And he was like yes that would work.

So I said ok one minute I need to go find his wallet.

I then ate my lunch keeping him on hold in the game.

I then decided 7 minutes was long enough and got back to him...

I said ok I have it

He said Thank You

He said ok I need his name please.

I said his name is Ben Dover

He at first didnt pick up on this and then like 20 seconds later it clicked and out came the rage in the text to me with lots of bad words. He finally figured out that I was telling him to Bend Over.

I then laughed at him and said thank you for making my day and he after all mad at me was asking me why i wasted his time. He still thought i was a girl by the way so he was spamming the text chat with Woman this and Woman that.

I said why not? ....... By me wasting your time... I made you upset which put a huge smile on my face by the way and kept you from scamming other people! ( Playing along with in character as a female even though i am a male, )I said your in a game after all and well LIL OL ME PLAYED YOU !!!

He raged out and left and i ate the rest of my lunch and kept LAUGHING and then I copy pasted the chat to clipboard and contacted the game support to report him and told them that I toyed with him.

By the way there are some really great scammers getting played on youtube, ... This guy set up a sweet honeypot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnDFVS0VVNo

I have a list of companies  and I'm seeking employment I have a cover LETTER and a RESUME that I want to fax to them I can look up every company to get every fax number or is there a easier way with software  also I need to put ceo,s name on cover letter of each company any idea'sNot sure why you would use fax for that nowadays, surely email is more appropriate.faxs goes straight to co it will be fax att ceo but finding a easy way to get fax numbers to the companies and ceo's without doing every single one by one is there a software or somthing Sending Resumes/CVs/Cover Letters directly to a company's CEO is the best way to make sure it is ignored. Even it does come to the attention of the CEO that attention is likely to be only long enough to try a 3 pointer in the bin.

Also it sounds like your cover letter is GENERIC and form-lettered. If you are going to have a Cover Letter, it should be written specifically for that company and demonstrate a genuine interest beyond "I like money" as why you want to work there.Yes, you need to make a good impression from the start.
Do some research and find what the company expects of applicants. They may have a policy of getting applications by conventional mail. f so, create a new letter for each company you want. Better yet, find out which companies are now hiring. Unless the company has a very small number of personnel, the CEO does not look at the incoming FAXES. Believe me. Aside from anything else, the first thing I would do if I were you is make sure the grammar in the resume is significantly better than that in your posts.

Solve : WHERE TO GET LAPTOP?

Answer»

does anyone knows any site to purchase or place other fairly used UK laptops guaranteedI tend to just buy used hardware through eBay.  You can filter to only show business sellers which will give you a bit more protection than buying from an individual - There are loads of professional companies selling refurbished laptops on eBay.  You can filter this by making a search, selecting "More refinements" on the left hand side then go to the "Seller" tab and check "Seller Type" and select "Business".  You would need to check the item for information about warranties but most professional sellers will offer something and if the machine is new ENOUGH it may still even be covered by the original manufacturers warranty.Tiger Direct and Newegg last I KNEW sold INTERNATIONALLY for GOOD used computers most with a warranty of some kind and not bad prices. They do but the international shipping and import tax would make it not worth it.  Not to mention that you would END up with a US keyboard layout. Quote

Solve : Suggestions for a good value TKL/87 keyboard??

Answer»

Hey CH!

Looking for some advice here on keyboards

I have tried a mechanical keyboard but never owned one, I'm quite happy with my current cheap RD keyboard but it's on it's last legs and is due for a replacement or upgrade, plus, I keep hearing praise for mechanical everywhere I go, so I'm very intrigued
However a cheap RD would be a ideal as then I can buy other peripherals I've been meaning to buy also.

Every SHOP I have gone to that I know of in my area (PC World, Maplins) offer either very low profile scissor switches which i personally dislike or gaming keyboards by razor with 'clicky' switches that I'm not really interested in. I like the feel of them although they are VERY different.  These are all I have been able to test

All I ask for is a keyboard that is TKL and not low profile/laptop style that is not too loud. I'd much prefer a minimal design also and tactile non-clicky keys (or just RD)

The dilemma is have is that even online all I can really find is mechanical keyboards of over £120 in TKL,  MAYBE this is just how the market is now? but I thought I would ask people that know about keyboards first.
Although I have seen mechanicals for sale for very cheap on ebay £30-40 I figure these are the ones I should stay clear of as they are probably very noisey and unreliable? I figure if I'm buying something new and fancy I may as well go all the way

If I can't find a RD here are are the options I have found so far that i feel I'm left with:

Max Keyboard Blackbird TKL
code clear TKL
cooler master rapid-i
ducky shine range
not sure which

Again, i just want something that is TKL and not EXCESSIVELY loud
Thanks guys   The acronym had we confused.

80% / TKL Keyboards (Tenkeyless)
80% / TKL Keyboards (Tenkeyless)
As the name suggests, tenkeyless mechanical keyboards are essentially STANDARD full-sized keyboards without a tenkey / numberpad.  TKL keyboards are great for small work areas or USERS who don't rely on a tenkey. Many also prefer TKL and 60% keyboards for the shorter 'throw' distance to the mouse.
Maybe somebody should make a keyboard whee you can just snap off  the number pad t you don't wan tit!
Wait! They already did that!

Solve : Windows 10 Countdown. Who Cares??

Answer»

This MONTH the free windows 7 or 8 upgrade to Windows 10 expires. Is that really important to you? Maybe not.
If you just now just now decide to do the upgrade, here is an important tip.
Have in  place a Backup Plan.
It can be another hard drive, a stack of DVDs, a big USB thumbscrew or even another PC. with extra drive space.  After you have installed Windows 10, you can use your backup to revert back to Windows  7, if need be.

Here is an article explaining how to backup before you do Windows 10.

How to backup your PC before upgrading to Windows 10
Quote

By Graham Barlow September 16, 2015
While it's highly unlikely that anything will go wrong in the course of an upgrade, we'd still recommend being safe – a new install is a good excuse for a backup! If you're heading for a clean install or an upgrade, you'll want to make sure you don't lose anything valuable in the process
Also, some free cloud storage services will GIVE you enough space to backup a stripped down version of your current OS.

This month the free windows 7 or 8 upgrade to Windows 10 expires. Is that really important to you? Maybe not.
Well, if you want to upgrade for free, you gotta do it by July 29.  I have upgraded my laptop from Win 8.1 to Win 10; I had no doubt about doing that upgrade.  I also updated a Win 7 Pro system to Win 10; I debated over whether to do that upgrade.  I still have Win 7 OS disc I can legally install on another computer; I do not intend to install it on a computer and upgrade to Win 10 during the free upgrade period; I still want to have AVAILABLE a working Win 7 system. I have upgraded two computers using the ISO image instead of the on-line update. By using the custom install option I end up with both a copy of Win7 and Win 10 on  each machine. (I have two Microsoft  DVDs of Windows 7 with product keys.)
So based on my personal experience, MS will let you have a dual boot 7 and 10 on a computer.  Somebody said that is not legal.

But here is a new link that says it is legal to dual boot.

Solve : Removing A Partition?

Answer»

I partitioned my 1T hard drive into two 500 gig partitions and now I want to remove the one partition because I want the space. I don't want to reformat the hard drive. I was looking on line to see how to do this and I found some free software CALLED "Partition Wizard MINI Tool", https://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html. Is this safe to use or should I use something else?

ThanksIt is a good program. But use it with care. It does what you tell it to do. The best free partition software is Easeus (http://www.easeus.com/partition-manager/epm-free.html). Two things:

1) Be sure to create an image of your drive(s) (or at the very least, backup critical data) before performing any drive LEVEL activities such as repartitioning.

2) You are not going to gain any space as such. You are simply going to eliminate one partition and combine the space from that partition with the other.
Well I got it to work. I deleted the "Recovery" partition between the two MAIN partitions, http://www.howtogeek.com/139710/remove-your-pc’s-recovery-partition-and-take-control-of-your-hdd/, then with AOMEI Partition Assistant Lite, http://www.disk-partition.com/partition-assistant-lite.html, I resized my C partition to as big as it would go, 931.41gb. Now my drive shows the larger partition.

Solve : Windows 7 Update Problem?

Answer»

Is Windows 7 Update not working or is it just my computer? I have been trying for a couple of days to use it but it just sits there in the "search" mode. I just tried my old Windows 7 install on the old hard drive and its not updating either. I tried the Microsoft "Fix It" on line scan and it said it didn't fix my Update problem.Well, I don't THINK is is very important.

But.. here is what you need to know...

Windows Update: FAQ

View a list of updates installed on your computer

Does taht help any?  I ran the Microsoft "Fix It" on-line program and it I had this that it couldn't fix, "Windows® 7 Update Error Code 0x8024402C". So I looked that up and am in the process of researching it. I found these, https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/883821 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzZaRVqKHfo. It's progress I think.   Well the issue is solved. I let the computer run all night with the Windows Update on searching for updates. It sure found them. This morning when I got up it said it couldn't install the updates, progress, at least if found them. So I selected all but one, agree to two license agreements and went off to WORK. When I got home it had paused at installing the second update because it needed me to make some selections, I did and on it went. I looked at the list of installed updates when it was done and there were between 30 and 40 successful updates, only two failed which I will look into later. So it's all good.  Good NEWS sloan...sometimes it is best to simply walk AWAY from the PC for awhile...
Glad yer fixed up.

Solve : question about wifi?

Answer»

I have TWC and to get wifi at home you have to get one of their pricier packages. If I got a router could I get wifi at home without buying their biggest package. Or would I need a wireles modem or both? Someone was debating me that TWC can not stop you from getting wifi service just because they give you a basic modem. If you got your own router that does NOT mean your service would be cheaper...except for the  monthly charges...

And whoever told you what you stated is full of bunk...

BTW we don't assist here with circumventing ISP protocols...You can get a wireless router and connect it to the basic modem, ALLOWING wireless access to the same connection. Your connection would not be faster, of course, but if they only offer wireless at a higher tier then you would be able to save a bit of money if you don't need the other features of the higher tier by using a wireless router of your own. What is your current internet speed in mbps?? I just got internet service through Atlantic broadband, small CABLE company in western Pa, and the speed is 60 mbps. 30 a month for 1st year and then it goes up to 50 second year. I know other cable company's offer slower service for more and twc may be one. I bought my own modem and was planning on using the internet through a wired connection. But then I realized I had an old wireless modem lying around my house. I hooked it up and to my surprise the speed is not bad considering I am only getting 60 mbps and my wireless router was old. I did not try a wired connection since the wifi worked good. Meanwhile the cable company wanted to rent me a modem and router for 20 a month. So I SAY get all your own equipment and see how your wireless internet works using the cheaper PLAN. If your current speed is around 60 mbps you should be fine. Quote from: anthonyb5615 on July 29, 2016, 09:43:43 PM

So, a 60 Mbps speed is necessary to be "fine"?     My DSL service is 10Mbps and I'm fine.   My wireless modem came from my ISP (CenturyLink).

Yes, I would not pay a $20/month rental fee.  I haven't looked at modems on the market for a long time but I believe most Internet users would recover the cost of a purchased modem is a rather short time, compared to a $20/mo rental fee, which would equate to $240/yr. First to be clear, TWC is not giving you a modem. Check your bill. You are paying a monthly fee. It would be cheaper to buy your own.
http://www.timewarnercable.com/en/support/internet/topics/lease-or-buy-modem.html

I've always bought my own modems. (Comcast since 2004) The first modem in 2004 was free - Comcast gave some sort of rebate. I bought the 2nd modem because Comcast said my dropped signals was the modem going bad. It was not because the new modem did the same thing. So I now had 2 working modems. I bought a 3rd modem last year but haven't hooked it up yet. This new modem is DOCSIS 3 and the old modems are DOCSIS 2.

Next you purchase a wifi router and attach it to the modem where your computer is currently plugged in. You plug the computer into one of the 4 ports. (The single port is for attaching the router to the modem).I have always bought or used my own modems or routers until now.
My congruent provider is Xfinity with Comcast.
I pay a very modest fee Under $10 per month, which included the modem and a technician came out to revise the installation. (A broken drop cable.)

The market place is in a state of change. Consumers in many areas now have better choices that before.

And one does not have to resort to a "unlawful" trick to get get internet speed. In my case I now have one company for TV and another for Internet and another for  Cell phone service. Now you would think that the Telecom companies would have a package deal that works best. Well, not yet. Maybe SOMEDAY
Here is a relevant report:
https://www.consumeraffairs.com/cable_tv/cable.htm#
I have a combination modem/router provided by my ISP.  I've had it for a year or so.   It has worked well.  It is made by ZyXel.

Solve : Avoid Smartphone to Call 911 Emergency?

Answer»

When you use a smartphone to call in an 911 emergency , you could make things worse. ABC news has criticized the 911 system last year, but this story is new and very moving. It Isa the report of the widow was wanted to save here husband.
Quote

Widow has urgent message about calling 911
Like most anyone, Alison Vroome expected her 911 call to go smoothly.
By Diane Wilson and Lindsey Brunson
Tuesday, May 03, 2016 05:27PM
CARY, NC --
The night of her husband's death, Alison Vroome did EVERYTHING she thought she was SUPPOSED to. She grabbed her phone, called 911, told the operator her address.
Then she told it to her again and again.
Almost everything seemed to go wrong. The call went to a different county; the operator couldn't understand her address. It was more than 10 minutes into the 911 call before the paramedics arrived, 10 minutes of panic that dragged on for Vroome and her family, her two girls crying, the neighbors trying to resuscitate her husband, Kevin, collapsed on the bathroom floor upstairs.
How could this happen? Smartphones now are now small computers tath can track your moves almost anywhere. What went  wrong?
The core of the problem is that most 911 services can not lock into a APP onm the smartphone that gives the exact location. Instead, the cell tower can only give an proximate location that can be off by a half mile. Or even more.

A report says it would take three years to re-work the emergency system to work well with Smartphones. And people make fun of me for having a landlineI don't see why the operator had a problem understanding the address. Should be fired, even with technology, operator should understand address and know how to locate it without any technology. I will bet and say this happen in a rural area and involved a hard to find address. Either way sad story.. Quote
The call went to a different county; the operator couldn't understand her address.

I can see this happening for people that move or buy a cell phone plan that is in one area and dont LIVE in that area. Brother in law bought a cell plan in Florida through some market america promo and he says he is saving so much money using that plan, meanwhile for everyone else its a long distance call to Florida even though he lives just 15 miles away in New Hampshire. I can see a mix up like that happening with his phone. The worse part of this is that he is probably only saving like $3 a month and for his mother to call him she had to have a long distance carrier and so he may be saving $3 and forcing his own mother to pay more than $3 to talk with him. A very stupid situation. His mother and SISTER told him to get a local number, he refuses and doesnt care that it will cost others an additional expense to contact him locally but through a florida phone number. Well if there is ever a 911 call he will likely have it going through a Florida dispatch which has no clue about the New England area, however they should be able to triangulate from towers to place it or use the phones internal gps maybe to locate it, however just like the call that geek shared it took over 10 minutes, is it worth saving $3 a month to not know if 911 will work properly and force other family members to call long distance even though he is just 15 miles away.   A few observations.
•  There are some real cheap cell phones available in most metropolitan areas. One could put one of these in the truck of your car as an emergency phone.
• Some medium price tablet phones have two SIM cards. The second card could be for an area you often visit.
• in addition to 911, there are other X11 numbers that can bring up a live operator. In a frantic emergency you could try one of these to get help.

Quote
211 - Public, health.
311 - Non-emergency police, fire.
511 - Road and traffic conditions.
711 - Telecommunications Relay Service.
These may a vary.  Many phone commies use 611 for customer support.

Solve : Is there a simple way to make a playlist on my ipod clone??

Answer» Not really an Apple question, but maybe  the best place

I have some non-Apple devices that just play MP3 from an internal flash drive. These are cheap clones of the early Apple iPod device.

My question is: is there a simple way to organize the songs to play in a preferred order? Examples, a list of songs that alternated between male and females singers. Or a list that alternates between cuts from two of my favorite albums?

These cheap clones LACK any meaningful documentation.

I own two SanDisk Clip+ mp3 players and an Office Max/Depot store brand Ativa.

Perhaps you will see some program mentioned that does what you want. I don't USE any program.
I generally just have favorites, about 35 out of the over 400 songs on the device, in a folder and turn on shuffle. When I tire of a song or two, I move some songs out and put others in.

Solve : My PC will not stay running and I don't know why...?

Answer»

Hello this is my first time here and I figured this would be a good place to ask for help.

Anyways, as I stated in the title, my pc decided that it will keep shutting down on me no MATTER what I do. Every time I run an application (such as my web browser, steam, or any game) it will shut off almost immediately. If I'm not running anything and just let it idle on my home screen, it will stay running for a good 15 to 20 minutes before it shuts down. I noticed that if I restart the pc and log back into my home screen, then the date and time ALWAYS reverts back to nearly 10 years ago on October 1st. I don't really know if this has anything to do with it though. It is a pretty old machine SINCE I've had it since 2008. The only changes I have done with was swapping out both the video card and power supply. The old power supply had burnt up on me like 3 months ago. Since I made those changes it ran just fine up until now.

I've already AIR blasted EVERYTHING inside, since it was kinda dusty. I checked all the fans, made sure everything was plugged in. Everything seemed ok hardware wise. I also updated my video drivers and deleted the old ones. So far... nothing has changed. It continues to shut off the same way.

Here are my current specs:

Vista 64 bit
Radeon HD7850
I7 920
3gb ram

I've never really encountered this problem before, so any help would be greatly appreciated.the date going back to October 1st is almost certainly due to a dead motherboard battery, and at only $AUD3 (approx) to replace, well worth the expense and effort.

but your shutting down issue could be many things.

dust was my first guess, but you seem to have done the necessary blow out of the chassis components.
did you also remove the CPU and replace the thermal paste? (another quick and cheap exercise)

another possibility may be when the PSU blew, it took out other components on the motherboard.
and on a nearly 10yo rig, now you start getting into the 'is it worth it' category. Quote

...and on a nearly 10yo rig, now you start getting
into the 'is it worth it' category.
However, there are some  things to check out.

You system can run with 2 GB of RAM, Try it and see. One RAM might be overheating. Try substitution.
Thinking about it, even a 64 bit system will run on 1 GB. Try RAM one at a time.

What is your room temperature?
Is your PC in a well0ventilated area?
Are you sure all fans are running?
Maybe the heat-sink on the CPU is loose.

Just maybe the heat sink thermal paste dry up and blew away.
I have never seen that happen, but others claim it does somehow go away.
Aside from replacing the battery, and possibly trying with less RAM, you might try seeing if you get the same behaviour when you just have the system sit at the BIOS/CMOS setup screens. That would eliminate any possible software or driver being involved (well, altogether, as you've already handled some driver/software possibilities). You could also knock out two birds with one stone by running Memtest from a bootable disc. If it hangs it is probably hardware, if memtest finds errors then it could be a RAM issue (I don't think that's likely to cause reboots but who knows)

Depending on the history of the system, it might not have thermal paste; some manufacturers use a Thermal "Pad" instead of Thermal paste material. The problem with Thermal Pads is that over time they turn to dust and stop being any good at actually transferring heat. I experienced this myself with a rather old K6-2 based system reaching temperatures in excess of 100 Centigrade under load.

Solve : How much do you think this computer would sell for???

Answer»

I'm trying to sell my computer and build another one that will work good for CS:GO but I'm having trouble about how much I should sell it for. Here are the specifications: http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/product-support/servicetag/JK97X12/configuration Any ideas?Ebay have one priced 180 UK pounds ($225), Core i3-4150 3.50GHz HDMI USB 3.0 8Gb Ram 1Tb Hdd

Looks like his has the weaker Pentium processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) CPU G3240 3.10GHz as well as only 4GB RAM

*Are you interested in possibly upgrading this system or are you looking to start fresh?

To me a system like this I could see selling in the $125-150 range. Shipping is going to be costly unless you can find someone local to buy it. Its too bad its not a i3 VS a Pentium. Do you know of any friends that might need a computer that you can sell to and help them out and get some money back from this without having to charge upwards of $30 for shipping and then hope its not drop kicked in transit.

You might want to see if you can get someone on craigslist to buy it maybe LOCALLY. Most are probably going to offer $100 for it, so $125 to $150 is if you hold out for the right person. Thing is that some of the Core i3 systems can be obtained around the $150+ range and so I dont see you getting much out of this system in a sale.

If interested in sticking with system you have now and performing a upgrade to video card for starters, you could get better performance and not take a loss on this system. The CPU is on the weaker side but I dont believe it to be the bottleneck in game performance for CS:GO, i think the performance issue your having is likely the integrated graphics.

Here are the CS:GO specs: http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/requirements/counter-strike-global-offensive/11422

I use to buy and sell used computers and its a hard market out there for selling used computers as for the cost of the lower end computers has gone down so much that someone could walk into a Walmart for example and pick up a newer Pentium CPU computer in the $250-$300 range. Here is one for $269.99 for example. And used computers usually sell for about half what they cost unless something that holds its value with a better i5 or i7 CPU etc in which you might be able to get 60-70% of the cost of new for used. Additionally age of computer is a factor and their worth drops off pretty quickly each year and then come to rest in the $50-$100 range as demand is lesser and lesser and more of them then wanted etc. http://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/productdetails/inspiron-3252-small-desktop/ddcwst7102b?s=dhs&oc=ddcwst7102b&ST=pla&dgc=ST&cid=298726&lid=5704714&acd=1230980731501410&ven1=DDCWST7102B:51916301508:901pdb6671:c&ven2=:&ven3=812303017338117219 Quote from: DaveLembke on January 29, 2017, 09:06:18 AM

Thanks. Do you know a graphics card that would work for this build, is cheap, and would run CSGO at 60fps medium graphics?
Wait your selling this PC ? ?

And you wanna buy a vid card to sell it ? ?
Im confused. Quote

I suggested that the weak spot in their specs is mainly the GPU on this system and that CS:GO would run much better if they werent using Intel HD Graphics which is the integrated video. And so they could save money vs giving away this computer for next to nothing and having to build one from scratch. I unfortunately only have the original Counter Strike and not CS:GO so unable to test to give results on my hardware.

Knowing what they have for a budget would better pair them up with a video card for this. A nVidia GTX card would be best but that would come at a cost of a power supply upgrade + the video card. A GT card I am not sure if they would get 60fps with medium graphics setting. I have a GeForce GT 730 2GB 128-bit 700Mhz card and games similar to CS:GO I get 40-45 fps with 1280x1024 resolution on medium settings. The Benefit of a GT card is that they would probably not need a power supply upgrade with that computer so it would be the cheaper way to go.

The games MINIMUM specs for GPU suggest a lower end card spec and a GT 730 would be above and beyond the minimum specs, but not having this actual game to test with a similar Pentium processor, I am unable to verify if 60 fps could be achieved with the GT card. Maybe someone here has CS:GO and a GT 730 or weaker GT card to say whether 60fps at medium settings is achievable.

Quote
Video card must be 256 MB or more and should be a DirectX 9-compatible with support for Pixel Shader 3.0

A GTX card would be much better performance, but its then the price of the video card in the $120 range for starters and then add another $50 or so for a 500 to 600 watt power supply to handle the cards load with the 12 volt molex connections. For $200 or less this computer they already have could be upgraded to a GTX card and 60fps at medium settings very likely achievable although with a GTX video card, now you have to account for the bottleneck of the Pentium processor.

Its unfortunate that I dont have CS:GO to test with because I have a GT 730, a GTX 260, and a GTX 780 to test with and a Pentium class system of similar processing power and 4GB DDR3.Just found a GTX 750 ti that appears to (maybe) not require a power supply upgrade. No 12 Volt Molex requirement so its POWERED off the PCI-E slot alone. They could install this small GTX card and be off to the races with performance assuming the DELL computer has a 300 watt minimum power supply in it. The spec listing that is at Dell doesnt specify the power supply wattage. If its a 250 watt power supply then they would need a better power supply, but this video card calls for 300 watts minimum and you could get a 400 watt for around $40.

Here is a test with the GTX 750 ti and current hardware... Looks pretty good but they dont share the frame rate at medium settings on the free account, premium service required to see some stats. Here is your system with the GeForce GTX 750 ti upgrade: http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=2323&game=Counter-Strike%3A+Global+Offensive&popSysReqRAM=4&p_make=Intel&p_deriv=Pentium+G3240+3.1GHz&gc_make=Nvidia&gc_deriv=GeForce+GTX+750+Ti&ram=4&checkSubmit=#systemRequirementsGotcha Dave...now i understand...thanx.

Solve : Does any one own a Samsung UN40J6200AFXZA 40-Inch Display 1080p Smart HDTV LED?

Answer»

I have opportunity to get Smart TV from Samsung should be a good brand is the internet part of any use is what I am wondering?Smart TV means you can stream content. I myself have a Dumb TV Flatscreen and I use a ROKU to give it some smart features.  I have a Samsung smart TV (not that model) and it has apps like Youtube, and many others available. Even without paying for internet streaming there is a lot you can do. If it has a DLNA client (they usually do) you can stream stuff from your home network. If I was choosing a new TV now I would always go for a smart one.I also have a Samsung (and a Sony) Smart TV (again, not the exact same model) - They are pretty good for what they are - Provides an easy way to access various online streaming services such as YouTube, Netflix along with various "catch up" TV services from various TV channels and networks.  That said, I tend to not use the smart features that often as I have a PC plugged into my TV for that sort of stuff (there's a couple of services that the TV does not support).  Personally I wouldn't pay a fortune more for a Smart one, but at the time I bought mine the price difference was like £50 so that seemed worth it.

The only real issue I can see with Smart TVs is that you are at the mercy of Samsung to continue to support the various "apps" - If a provider (e.g. Netflix) CHANGES their systems several years down the line and Samsung don't release a software update to your TV then Netflix will no longer work.  On the plus side, except for the removal of Skype and some Samsung Social thing (neither of which I've ever used), this hasn't happened to anything on my TV yet.

My Samsung one is also pretty good in the sense that the "smart" stuff doesn't get in the way, unless you press the button to launch it you barely even see any of the smart functionality.  This is a contrast to my Sony TV (which was a fairly early Smart TV, circa 2011) which could be a bit of a PAIN where you would turn on the TV and have to wait for 5 mins for it to do a software update.I also recently got a Panasonic hard disk PVR with Freeview Play (which won't MEAN a lot to non-UK members) which can access a bunch of catchup services via wi-fi from my ISP's router, and has apps too, and it would turn any dumb TV into a smart one. My Samsung TV is a 2012 model and it is pretty unobtrusive, you would hardly know it was smart unless you press the Smart Hub button on the REMOTE.

Solve : News Website suggestions ... looking for something better than Yahoo or AOL news?

Answer»

For years I have been using Yahoo and sometimes AOL for news. But it seems like more and more articles are hidden ad articles lately. Click on something that FOLLOWS the same NAVIGATION as the news thread and next you know your sent to a website with TONS of advertising and tricky navigation that tries to get you to click on stuff other than article. Its not a malware web hijacker etc its an actual ad hidden under news articles and its frustrating.

Throwing in the towel on Yahoo and AOL News, and looking for suggestions on better news sources that dont try to get you to click on ads dark patterns and redirect you.Not a news recommendation...but i use IGHome as my Homepage....and then customise all the widgets for my news WEATHER sports and daily puzzle feeds...kinda handy.

P.S. Good Luck finding a reputable news source this day and age....Maybe I'm missing something Dave, but why not CNN, NBC, NY Times, etc? Quote

Maybe I'm missing something Dave, but why not CNN, NBC, NY Times, etc?

Nothing missed    Its just that I figured I would throw this up on here to see what people suggest and maybe get multiples SHOWING that one source is better than another as well as pros and cons of others etc vs poking around to find one that is better than the others.Okay . Well, when I want to look at news stories (several times a day) I click on cnn.com and nbcnews.com. I'm sure others like foxnews.com, nytimes.com, usatoday.com, etc I usually use MSNGoogle News: news.google.com. Yeah, I don't know how Yahoo and AOL are still in business, either! Relics from the 90s!With Windows 10, I sometimes use the News app.
