Solve : Encrypting links when sending them? Opinions ??

Answer»

Hi all, recently I needed to do that so that I can send my drawings (mainly for approval) more secured. I’ve come across and used that site: http://urlcrypt.to/
Please give my your opinion about if it is any good because i honestly have no knowledge in that field.
I’ll appreciate your feedback.
Why not send drawings by e-mail attachment? Why have an active link out there for people and web crawlers to connect to to farm info?

I havent used any services like this but would advise the setting password OPTION if this must be used, but I would not go this route of using this service and I explain below why:

Quote

You can add one more layer of security by enabling the captcha option or by setting a password. This way only people who successfully pass the captcha test or enter the password can see the links, while all the bots being rejected.

Thing is that I dont quite get is that if you have a web server with this info at a url path, and your using this service to mask the actual path. I would think that you would need to use a hosting service that provides this type of masking otherwise your actual domain is still out there to be CRAWLED and so your still exposed.

Example being say you have www . mybusiness . com

You use their service and they give you www. encryptedurl . com

Now your information is exposed in 2 locations at your domain as well as at the encryptedurl that is password protected but your domain where it originated from is not protected the same.

This site states:

Quote
What is URL Crypt?

URL Crypt is a free service that lets you encrypt your links. There are hundreds of bots and servers that crawl the web for URLs and access them, copy the content or try to find who created them. By using URL Crypt, you are now safe from these risks.

Our mission is to protect you and all the other users of your URLs.

How URL Crypt can help?

Internet is not a safe place. URL Crypt is meant to help you protect your links by encrypting them in a safe way.

You can add one more layer of security by enabling the captcha option or by setting a password. This way only people who successfully pass the captcha test or enter the password can see the links, while all the bots being rejected.

All I see is a drop box for an already existing URL which is an exposed URL that is still out there to be crawled and information gathered from and they just give a means to bounce off of them like a proxy to hide the origin of the URL under a dynamic URL mask.

Looking at this website, I wouldnt trust it with protecting drawings from being STOLEN etc. Your actual website and web server needs to have authentication and be patched for all security attack types to protect your data, and then a 1 time use password given to a trusted individual by phone or e-mail. This way it allows a single individual a one time use of access to these FILES and hopefully they themselves are not a crook or have a security issue at their end for the info to become stolen such as they download it to their laptop and the laptop has a data leak hack on it or laptop stolen and information now in the wrong hands if the laptop itself is not encrypted to prevent someone from spinning up the drive with Linux and accessing the files getting around the OS password of the laptop.
Here's something I just found via a Google search: Encrypt Gmail and Google Drive with the Flip of a Switch  Looks like it could be an option for you.I don't send by email because the files i send are often more than 100-200mb so you know more more mail's have much less  limit. As for example i had to send file that was around 50mb and the receiver jest couldn't get it. So i decided to upload it somewhere and get link. There are sites about that, but than again i didn't know if it's safe so i wanted to giva that link more security and that's how i did it."Now your information is exposed in 2 locations at your domain as well as at the encryptedurl that is password protected but your domain where it originated from is not protected the same."

So you say that even like that the site where i upload the file the chain breaks ?I think I'd use a cloud storage service for this and then allow your intended recipient access to the file through the service's file sharing feature.  I'll suggest www.adrive.com.  Agree with Soybean with 1 caveat'....
On that online storage account i would create a seperate folder for the user who will access it and keep the shared files in there...
Therefore the password if set properly will only allow access to the files you choose...not the full contents of your online storage. Quote from: patio on January 25, 2017, 09:19:54 AM

Yes, that's what I had in mind.  I should have been more clear on that point.  How come the cloud storage will be safer ? Would it be easy for the recipient to download files ?If you are giving them access to files of course they can DLoad them...
But without specifics to what you want to do it's extremely hard to DEFINE your goals on our end...

More details would be helpful... Quote from: JordanMihailov on January 25, 2017, 09:29:51 AM

Upon logging on to the site, http changes to https, which indicates the browser is in a secure, encrypted mode.    Quote from: JordanMihailov on January 25, 2017, 09:29:51 AM

Yes.  As the primary holder of the account with the cloud service, you need to specifically authorize access by the intended recipient.   The cloud service website will have info on doing this. Quote

I wanted that process to be as simple as it can be without any attachments as getting cloud storage( i don't understand it) and free. I don't see my boss agreeing on spending money on that kind of service:) i don't send so many files that often. It happens no more than few times a month the best. As i said before the upload site from which i get the download link expires after 24 hours i thing( not completely sure). It's suppose to be one time operation. I give access only to the recipient ( i think ).Then a Free Cloud service would be fine for your needs with no cost to the Boss...

However i highly suggest that he takes those savings and gives you a raise...

Solve : How Many Cell Phones Ever Made?

Answer»

My guess is that there must be at least a million different BRANDS and models of cell phones. Trying to think of purpose for such a statistic...

FCC might have this info of how many different models since they would have to be registered, however multiple models might work under the same FCC license/permit based on multiple models with the same approved by FCC RF Transmission circuitry. Additionally I am SURE there are cell phone knock OFFS created in china for example that might be their own model and might not have been FCC approved as well so knowing the exact number of brands and models will have a certain level of error to the statistics.

If wanting to know how many were ever made vs how many different models I am unsure where you would amass such information because its pretty useless. Thinking the only information that might be helpful would be statistics of how many people are subscribed to a service vs the population to know for MARKETING whether a region or location is saturated with phones or there is a potential market to push the sales of phone to an AREA. Smart phones are able to report back what OS they are running so you could even know if people are already running the newest phones or if many of them are stretching the life of older phones to know if there is a market to target with newer phones to get people to upgrade.Patent Office...Patent Office might be better than FCC. I was thinking FCC would be stricter with getting approval per model whereas a patent could be blanketed more across a range of models because FCC would require testing of each model, whereas the patent might be more flexible to span across models.

Well he has 2 places to try for that information Patent Office and FCC

Other issue is that during research you get statistics from a manufacturer today, and the information may be different tomorrow so there is no perfect count that i can think of. As for phones are being made daily and lots of them.We probably won't see him for 8 - 9 months...I doubt if there are a million brands and models. Wikipedia lists 161 cell phone makers world wide. I don't think each of these has at least 6,211 separate models currently, or has had during their past.

If it showing up as bad in a PC as well as the phone, it's probably kaput. I have had 2 sd cards go bad in phones, one in a ZTE Blade 3, one in a Motorola Moto G 3rd gen, they do sometimes die. One was from Currys DIGITAL and one from Maplin. Because I had kept the receipts, I took them BACK and GOT my money back.

You could try formatting it in a digital camera.

Too late...Sorry I threw it away

Solve : Need help with IRS form?

Answer»

Hi  --
I am using  Windows 7 and Google Chrome.  I can get form 1040 on my screen and fill it out. I want to save it and reclaim it later with the infor that I have entered.   No matter what I do I cannot reclaim the form with my  infor.  With such a brief explanation  can somebody  give me any help.     Thank you.      BobHi  --
No need to reply.  I finely figured out that I had to download the page.  Excused me for taking up your time.    BobHope your gettin a refund Bob...good to seeya again...PATIO  -
I guess you REMEMBER me because I have so much trouble.  Thank you.  I am still having trouble with my IRS forms  but maybe I will work it out.  I got it right yesterday but today I can't remember how I did it.  Old age is catching up with me.  I will not get a refund BUT I will not pay any taxes!!!Good on you...patio  -
Go back to my first post on this problem and see if you can offer a suggestion.   Thanks     BobIf the info in the file is still there what happens if you RITE clik it and select Save As ? ?Bob, go back to your second post where you said " I finely figured out that I had to download the page."  Yes, you have to download the form and save it on your computer.   Then you should be able to open it your PDF reader and type entries in the boxes and save it with those entries retained and view-able the next the you open the form.

By the way, did you download your form from irs.gov or SOMEWHERE else?  I suggest you get it from irs.gov.  soybean  -
Thanks for your reply.  Yes I get the form from gov.  I get the form on my monitor and enter infor.  I then  click on "download".  Another page comes up with "save" on it.  There is a space that has "1040"  in it.  I think I am supposed to delete that and give a name.    I do that and go to "download" and it is there but I open it it is a lot of printing that means nothing to me.  From then on I am lost. You said to save it on your computer. Where?  you said I should be able  to open it your PDF reader.  Where is that?   Be easy I'm not to smart.   Thanks for your time  Bob.Bob, if you know someone who knows more about using computers than you that you could ask to show you how to download, save, and open that IRS form, that would be much easier than trying to get help online.  I mean no offense, but your computer knowledge is so limited that trying to explain to you how to do things via a forum discussion is very cumbersome.  soybean  -
You are right.  I don't have any help so i just try things and once in a while I get lucky!!  My problem is when you use terms I don't know what it means I am lost.   I am not offended and I understand.  Thanks for the help I have gotten over the years.     Bob Last I heard IRS laying off people may be going out of business soon. Solve : AI - Anyone try making their own AI Program before??

Answer»

Was talking with a coworker about AI ( Artificial Intelligence )  and he was asking how it works. My answer to him was that its like a feedback loop and SENSORY and depending on what is SENSED there are laws in the code on what to do if certain conditions are met, but that additionally there is code out there that allows for the program to learn from cause an effect as well and build on itself so the programmer doesnt need to WRITE code from then on, it can dynamically create its logic possibly as well based on the environment around it.

Then I got the question of well you program on the side have you ever attempted it. My answer was that long ago I did try to make a program that was more of a Q&A. It had no sensory and REALLY wasnt AI because it was more of a to do list of if this is the input then this is the output. I TRIED to make it unpredictable though with seeded random generators such as if you asked it how are you feeling it would be a wide variety of feeling outputs but it really was not by any means what i would consider today an AI, but back when i was 12 years old I was determined and I spent about 3 weeks programming up an AI type of program in GW-Basic.

The problem I ran into was that I only had 64k of memory for my program and my program didnt store information in a file because while I knew enough about programming in GW-Basic, the code I wrote was lacking advanced programming techniques such as reading and writing to a disk which would have allowed for my program to deal with more information than that of what was nested within the program itself. All the data was contained in the code, so the program got bigger and bigger to the point that I hit the 64k limit of GW-Basic and that was the end of my attempt at an AI project when I was 12 in 1987.

Curious if anyone else here attempted at making their own AI or something similar before and any problems they ran into with it?

Later on when I found an adult DOS game that I cant share the title of here, it was funny that a lot of the way the program interacted with you was similar with the Q&A logic of if you enter this then do that as an output to the user of the adult game etc. In this game certain personalities were difficult to try to get to the goal of the game which I can also not discuss here. And this also was not AI but was entertaining trying to get yourself through a hurdle of chat to try to get what you wanted when the code was written as such that it acted like a real female that wasnt easy and you had to work for it etc. Of course one could play these types of games and write down a flow chart and then know how to answer each question to get from A to Z without going backwards or stuck in a loop of failed progression. The game was a game a friend gave me on a floppy disk and we all took our tries at getting lucky to get from A to Z to beat the game I guess you could call it by getting to the final goal of the game for the fake personality female that you were interacting with.

Solve : Confused Cell Phone Buyer?

Answer»

I am looking at all the smartphones and flip phones it seems what I need is a $10 GSM that is unlocked that can accept a sim card what I am wondering is when it says SAMSUNG SPRINT or LG Verizon if this is a different phone than just a Samsung without a CARRIER name on it? I bough a  LG Optimus Zone 3 for $10 NEW and this is a nice phone but is locked and on CDMA so if it was unlocked it still would not work. Here is a list:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_telephone_operating_companies
The list  includes America, Europe and Asia.
To find  WO is who inside of a country, you have to dig deeper.
Sad to say this list does not tell you that some companies are not compatible.

Here is a personal experience. My  flip phone no longer works. I buy another phone. My  SIM card does not work. Well, after two weeks I learn that not all unlocked phones are unlocked. Too hard to  explain. I had to buy another SIM card or else another phone. So I got another SIM card.

Your changes of getting the right phone and the right SIM card and the right carries are poor. This is by design.

You will need the help of a technician that knows what's working in your area.

Solve : in need of some old data info?

Answer»

yes i have a question i am wanting to find out every single website i have ever signed up on since i started getting on a COMPUTER and this has been like since 2000
and i am wanting to find out also every email i have ever signed up since then because i dont like the idea of me having accounts out there and not KNOWING or remembering how to get in them and close them
i have contacted various private i's and they say they can recover some and i even HIRED one and she did a *censored* job
so does anyone have any ideas of what i can do Strange request, and not knowing what you had for e-mail accounts is an interesting one.... almost an inverse to yourself as if your looking for someone elses e-mail accounts other than your own because that is a greater probability of unknown.

Google is the only means I know of for searching this info for free, and very interesting the need to snuff out these accounts going back to 2000. Data just doesnt go away if thats your hopes. Its on backups with companies that can be restored to the web and dumped there was well as part of an archive for legal REASONS if there were a court order for example to look into an investigation, its still out there unable to be deleted. Deletion would be illegal of deleting information related to wrong doing etc.Your memory and record keeping are your primary options. If you are paying people to do this you will run out of money waay before the task is even 1/2 way done...If you have habits with regard to note keeping, yu can find the information on our computer or on your backups.
Example:
One user has the habit always make  a TXT file with his user name and password for every e-mail  and other account ever made at any time. He always made a note in a TXT file. Sad to say, he does not remember how he named the text files he created. He only recalls that he always used the TXT type and never the DOC type for the files
Solution? He TURNED on the indexing service for his PC and started to look for text  files with  the character. He found a lot. He had to read each one. some

Of course, if one tends to have bad habits,  one can pay other people a lot of money to arrange the disorder.

Side Bar:
In the USA that are a number of wrongful convictions due to improper use of forensic evidence. This could possibly happen with data gathered from e-mail.

Solve : How to set password on the mp4 file in Android Smartphone?

Answer»

Please advise how to make a password on the video mp4 file in the LGK3 Smartphone so that the fille cannot be opened without password. Thank you.
JohnYou'll need some sort of app to do that.  Here's one that claims to do it.  I've never used it so can't remark how well it works.  https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.newsoftwares.folderlock_v1&hl=enYou can lock the file with filelocker app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mwgo.filelocker

You can also hide the file altogether with leo privacy guard. where the file will go in to leo guard app and can only be accessed by entering a password : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.leo.appmaster&hl=enQuestion I have is .... why isnt the phone itself in a locked state GOOD ENOUGH?

The file would not be accessed when the phone is locked. I have a number pad lock on my phone and it can take up to 10 digits. It would take a long time to try them to get into my phone if my phone was ever lost. Including 0000000000 through 9999999999 I have 10 Billion different up to 10 digit pin codes that I can use.

Hopefully the MP4 is not anything illegal. As for only purpose to go beyond complexity of 10 billion different pin codes would be if its SOMETHING so secret that 10 billion is not enough of a wall to keep law enforcement or government from someday up to 10 billion tries later from getting access to.  Sometime friends borrow phone (for whatever reason) and invade your privacy by checking photos and videos. Maybe he is asking this to protect himself from thatI never loan my phone out...I don't LEND my phone to ANYONE either. My rule is If you have an emergency, I will call for you. If you need to text someone, I will send the text. But no one puts their hands on my phone but me. Call me paranoid, but I don't trust anyone with it.

Solve : Best Gaming Laptop!?

Answer»

Having $3,000 to spend i'm trying to see the best laptop I can get for up to that price or under. SSD would be required along with a high end graphics card of course, thank you. Do you care about battery life or are you going to be plugged into an outlet when gaming?

My experience with gaming laptops are that their batteries dont last that LONG gaming and they require an outlet. Friend of mine has a gaming laptop and its like a space heater when playing games and the battery runs dead in about an hour of gaming if not plugged in. If your going to be plugged into an outlet and laptop is just preference as a space saver there are many power hungry laptops out there.

What screen size?
Do you want a number pad?
Any other features you want it to have?If you wanna a good laptop to use for years, I suggest Toshiba. Quote

If you wanna a good laptop to use for years, I suggest Toshiba.

While I like Toshiba, but what you shared is like saying go with Dodge .... but not specific model which can lead a person to buy a wimpy Dart vs a powerful and fun Hellcat, and  the information shared so far suggests high performance with a large budget.

Toshiba does have some that are spec'd for gaming such as this one, but with a budget of $3000 more info is needed from Kidryanpz to know that what is suggested is the perfect match to their needs. Here is an example of a gaming spec laptop that Toshiba has. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA6R44334981

Years ago I was given a Qosmio and that was one solid and well built quality Toshiba. It was heavy and bulky and intended for being moved around at gaming parties etc. It was a very expensive laptop when it first came out around 2006 with TV Tuner and everything + dual hard drives and option for RAID 0 or RAID 1 for adding speed to load times of games - or- safety of data, and I was given it in 2011 when the DISPLAY got lines through it from it getting sat on and it was 5 years old and the prior owner wanted newer and the Geforce Go 7300 GPU was no longer what it once was for performance with ever more demanding games. The Satellite that is linked above has good gaming specs, BUT, I have yet to see a Satellite that is a quality build. Its usually good guts but in a low cost lower quality laptop body. I have bought Toshiba's for myself such as the satellite and Tecra for business use/quality. I have only cooked and killed one Tecra years ago a Pentium M 1.6Ghz with GeForce Go 6600 when playing World of Warcraft on my company laptop and it was running VERY HOT, to where the fan was blowing out hot air and bottom of laptop was roasting hot as well. It blue screened on me and then it NEVER turned on after that. 2 days old, i shipped it back as a DOA and was issued another of the same model, I didnt install World of Warcraft on the other one and only used it for work and it ran well when just used for work. I have had satellites such as one with a Athlon II M300 2.0Ghz and 3GB RAM Windows 7 320GB HDD which I used for 4 years for gaming and it played World of Warcraft and while it pumped heat out the side the bottom wasnt roasting hot and while I still have it the Radeon GPU in it just doesnt perform well anymore for what I play and so I have replaced it as my main gaming laptop. * Its a shame that the GPU falls behind in performance faster than the CPU as for the CPU had plenty of performance and if there was an ability to upgrade to a BETTER mobile GPU i could have gotten another2 or 3 years out of it. **This is one reason why I prefer Desktop Computers for gaming,  its easy to upgrade CPU and GPU if needed or pair up an OLDER CPU with a newer GPU and be able to get by with what you have if needed. As well as Desktop Computer Hardware performs better than Laptops because desktop computers can be power hungry, while laptops they have to be power conservative and this detracts from performance. Better performance is had in investing in a Desktop gaming computer vs a Laptop gaming computer.

More info is needed before we can point out an exact model to suggest and maybe they want more than what Toshiba has for performance.

Solve : Help with videos playing in black and white.?

So I'm unsure which sub forum to put this in because I'm not sure what is causing this problem. Basically some videos I watch are played not in color, but in some weird almost completely black and white. The video STILL may have some very faint color like a very faint yellow or blue. This happens on various websites such as youtube or others, and it happens on all browsers.

It actually does occur with non-web videos which I didn't realize till you asked. It just started. I'm not sure WHATS different. The only thing I can see that happened recently is that I uninstalled and then re-installed origin. I currently am running Windows 7 from my HDD, I was Informed that I would get better speed if i used Easeus partition master to migrate the OS to ssd but beyond that i also would like to add windows 10 and Ubuntu to triboot this computer, i am also running steam games from my ssd on a separate partition, my question is how do i migrate the windows 7 PROPERLY, do i need to manually align the partition or does easeus do this good enough automatically, do i PUT windows 10 and Linux on the ssd with it or on the HDD, which drive should my swap and paging file go, and which drive should i be running my steam games from. Also if there is any expert info that you would like to add to help that i have not covered that  would be appreciated.

Solve : playing 1080 movies via usb cable?

Answer»

hello my friends, i have a very basic "yes or no" question, hopefully...
i download 1080 resolution dvds onto my portable HARD drive which connects to my 1080 HD TV via USB type A, so NOT HDMI. My question is am in fact outputting the movies from my tv in 1080, or is it downscaled to 720?
As ive noticed that whether i play 1080 or 720 movies from my portable hard drive on my tv, the quality is exactly the same

Or do i need to use somethng else to plug and play my movies that involves a hdmi cable to get maximum qualityWhat vid card ? ?

HDMI cable or display port should be used at any rate...

Where are these DLoads from ? ?Have you CHECKED the video files themselves to see what resolution they are?

"1080 resolution dvd" doesn't make sense. DVDs are not 1080p, that's Blu Ray.

Solve : Webpage is twice its normal size?

Hello,

I have Windows 7 on my laptop. I was just on the Post OFFICE webpage, USPS.COM. I was moving the cursor with my finger when the webpage suddenly enlarges to twice its normal size. I do not KNOW what I did, but how can I get the webpage to go back to its normal size?

Thank you.
Try pressing Ctrl-0 (zero).  You should be able to enlarge and shrink the web page using Ctrl-+ (PLUS) and Ctrl-- (minus).  Ctrl-0 (zero) puts it back to the default size. Quote

Not really news. So it goes here. Not YET a separate site, a landing page.
You may already know that Intel has been saying the Optane Memory technology will shake the earth and ROLL over everything in its path.

It may be missing it's driver if Belarc don't show it...do you know which card it is and how old ? ?

Don't know the card name it was got by a friend who built the pc and it's about 3 years old.

I have never cleaned the tower would that have anything to do with it.Is it just the one game that has the issue and sound otherwise works?

I had this happen with some 20 year old games that were intended for DOS/Windows3.11/95 where it requires direct access to a sound card like an old sound blaster 16 at IRQ 5 or IRQ 7 and its unable to work hand in hand with MODERN Windows OS to use the sound that is working completely fine otherwise with other programs and NEWER games. It's with anything that needs sound. What does Windows Device Manager show for Sound Card?Nothing see below

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]If you have a sound card installed you are going to have to open the case and inspect the sound card. If its unknown when looking at it as to what card it is if it has a FCC ID tag on it you can cross reference that on google and find the card make/model and get the correct driver.

If its onboard sound integrated with motherboard then you will need to figure out Make/Model/ and sometimes REV of the motherboard to chase down a driver.

The ( ! ) multimedia audio controller - "unknown" is probably your sound card.Your sound card is listed in Device Manager as "High Definition Audio Device" under Sound, video and game controllers and is shown to be working correctly.

Do you have the speaker icon in your system tray on the far right side of the Task Bar?  If so, right click on it and select Playback devices.  What does it show there as the default audio device? Quote
What does it show there as the default audio device?

Good question strollin.

ALSO, I was THINKING the High Definition Audio Device that is listed could be HDMI audio if he has a video card with HDMI. Thats why I was thinking the ( ! ) for multimedia audio controller is to be targeted to correct for the problem, however if the default audio device is incorrect then there would be no sound.  It could also be for an audio app he installed and hasn't setup proper - like...Like Dave, My understanding is that "High Definition Audio Device" is the Sound device used for HDMI. From what I understand, it is specific to AMD's Implementation; One of my systems is AMD-based and disabling the "High Definition Audio Device" doesn't affect audio output from the on-board sound, nor from the Xonar DG Card installed in it. It does prevent Audio from going through HDMI. Nvidia's version is "NVidia High Definition Audio" And Intel uses "Intel(r) Display Audio" which are far more clear in their naming.

The uninstalled "Unknown Device" would seem to be a sound card. THOUGH Drivers don't tend to uninstall themselves, either.
Sorry I took so long.

Dave, I tried to up-date sound card, will not work

Strollin, see below for Playback devices

Thanks BCP, I tried to up-date unknown but after 1/2 hour nothingLooks like I was incorrect about the audio device and that the multimedia audio controller is your sound card.  Sorry for that.  The fact that you don't show any Playback devices on the Playback tab confirms that.

As bc_programmer pointed out, drivers don't usually uninstall themselves so I would try re-seating the sound card (power off, remove and re-insert sound card from it's slot).  It's possible that the card's terminals are corroded or that the card "backed" out of it's slot to to thermal expansion/contraction.  It may also be possible that your sound card failed and needs to be replaced.

Solve : Want to change my TLD from .COM to .CLUB soon.?

Answer»

The .COM is the most popular TLD for web site names. But after giving it some thought, almost TEN minutes, I want to make it now .CLUB instead.
The are two forceful reasons.
1. Club is a word and represents a social group off people.
2. It costs less.

So,  very soon my geek9pm site will not have the dot COM.
It will have the dot CLUB at the end.

(TLD = Top Level Domain)
How much price difference between .com and .club? And are you doing this through godaddy or some other place? What you should really do is get the .club domain long before the .com EXPIRES then set it up so the .com will redirect to the .club domain.  This means that search engines.etc will properly understand that the domain has changed and will update their listings accordingly.I now have the CLUB WORKING and it is on the same server as the COM
In fact, it is the same start page.
 Both are with Godaddy.
The renewal of the COM would be about $15 us. The CLUB goes for $1.
My domain  is not a money maker of any kind, so there is not way it can pay for itself.
I was ready to just give it up, and then saw that the CLUB goes for $1 and thought to myself for a $1 I will do it.

What is the best way to redirect a domain?
You would usually set-up forwarding within the admin panel for wherever you registered the domain.

Flashing Yellow Arrows...
Will this work?

I can't find any flashing yellow arrows...
Update.
I now have my domain name changed. But there is a problem. The server is showing a subdomain,k not a top level domain. This might be due to delay in the DNS PROPAGATION. Sometimes it takes p to three days to resolve.

I should have used an alias rather than build a new directory for my word press blog. In hindsight an alias would have been a  painless transition. I should have known better.
Instead, I made a backup of the content of my blog and then created a new instance of Word Press in a new directory and imported the saved content. Something went wrong, so I tried another directory. I had in the end three copies of my blog. Fortunately, my host does no change me for using a bit more storage space.

Meanwhile, I am goring to edit the ink here so it jumps to the new place on the server.  I should not have waited until the last minute.

All you stated in hindsight is true... Quote from: Geek-9pm on February 05, 2017, 07:00:04 PM

Out of interest, were most of the new TLDs you looked at this cheap? Now about the price of TLD.
Often the registrar may offer a deal of a very low price the first year and the price goes way up the next year.
Some web builders can make money ROM new doin sites by using cleaver tricks to get people to spend money on a novel flashy web site. For those kind of commercial operators the cost of the TLD is of little concern. So they can afford to pay almost any price.
Now for myself, and many individuals like me who have a domain as a hobby, the cost of renewal of the domain becomes important.

To date the cost of the CLUB is about one dollar per year. But the COM is now at about $15 per year. Some registrars change even more.
Fro me, the choice was either give  up or reduce the cost of my hobby.Kemp in mind a number of people live on  on  a fixed income and do not have a pension.

Also of relevant interest....

Solve : The best PC upgrdes money can buy??

Answer»

This is not a problem, but question.
If you had a bit of money from some unexpected source, but not enough to buy a whole new PC, what would you buy  to improve what you have?
I was reading this article from last year and saw some ideas  taht did not sound right to me. Why am I so sceptical?
http://www.pcworld.com/article/3112726/hardware/the-15-highest-performing-pc-components-you-can-buy-today.html
He says:
Get a new i7 CPU from Intel. The Intel Core i7-6950X Processor Extreme Edition
Get a new motherboard. Like a Asus X99 Deluxe-II .
Then he really gets wild and suggest you get the best 12 GB RAM out there.
Finally he gets to graphics. This is what annoys me. Why did he not start with graphics? Graphics is something you can actually see, not just believe.
Then he does display. Boy does he have it backwards. Most of us would do more for our PC pleasure if we start wit ha better display and then spend money on the other stuff. Then he puts Power Supply near the bottom of his list HUH? How do you power all that tRAM with the old PSU?
Here's a link for a article with another LOOK at upgrades.
http://www.zdnet.com/article/pc-upgrades-getting-the-biggest-bang-for-your-buck/
Do you agree? Am I wrong? Should you put more money in CPU and RAM  instead of the graphics and display?
What do you think?
Well it DEPENDS.. If you already have a great power supply why would you start with that? The point of an upgrade is to take the weakest link and make it stronger so you should put more money in whatever your weakest link is.What should (or rather, could) be upgraded in a system is going to be dependent on current system's configuration.

if it has a weak graphics card or is using on-board graphics, and the intention is to run games, then that's an obvious starting place- unless the PSU isn't good enough for a reasonable budget graphics card, in which CASE that would be a starting place. and if a system has 4GB of RAM an upgrade to 8GB or 16GB can be helpful; but again, that goes back to the system configuration. If the PC has 4 slots of RAM, and you've got 8GB in 2 slots, then you can upgrade by buying two more 4GB sticks; but if your 8GB is in 4 2GB sticks, you have to buy four new 4GB sticks to get the same upgrade, which isn't going to be nearly as economical (not to mention now you've got RAM you aren't using as well, the old sticks)

Maybe the motherboard doesn't even have a PCI-E slot to use for a graphics card, in which case maybe a motherboard upgrade would be in order; but then you likely need new memory, and if the case you have is OEM, a new motherboard might not connect up properly with all the case connectors as well.

Sometimes an "upgrade" can be achieved by merely buying a good CPU cooler; if you've already got an unlocked processor and a motherboard capable of overclocking, you can overclock, which could improve performance. Or at least make numbers bigger, anyway. Cooler's tend to be fairly affordable. (Sometimes they are considered a necessary component of a build, though I usually start out with a stock cooler myself.)

And, if the system is old enough, "upgrades" are throwing money down a hole. It's ONE thing to do this knowingly (eg upgrading older systems just because you can) it's another to do so expecting to bring new life into the system. You aren't going to be playing The latest Doom game on your ZX Spectrum just because you bought the 16kB RAM Expansion, for example. Quote

Do you agree? Am I wrong? Should you put more money in CPU and RAM  instead of the graphics and display?
What do you think?

Money spent and where would all depend on what the computer is going to be used for. There are many categories for computer users.

- GAMERS
- Web Surfers,  e-Mail, Streaming Video Content
- Business Use, MS Office etc
- Scientific and Engineering Computation and Simulators
- Programmers
- Graphic Design / Artists
- Video Editing

and many more

Additionally, what life cycle will this system have... that is how many years of use before its to be retired and a better system purchased?

Solve : Tape recorder then now what?

Answer»

I used a tape recorder 40+ years ago computers were starting no cd do they make any device that can do what a cassette recorder or reel to reel recorder does? You could use a computer but kinda big smartphone has no input jack. I guess what I need is a digital recorder with input and output jack same price range as a cassette recorder. Are you trying to use an old computer with CLOAD for example to do a cassette load, and looking for a modern recorder that is low cost to interface with old computer? Also what is your budget?

Back in the early 1990S I still had my TRS-80 Model 1 with 16k RAM and was able to CLOAD using a small boom box tape player/recorder to load and save Basic programs to cassette.

Biggest issue your going to face with modern digital recorders is that they have a sample rate to them and so if your using a modern digital voice recorder with say an older computer that loaded originally from cassette tapes as an option, your going to run into troubles because the sample rate of modern recorders are probably going to cause data loss/corruption since the cassette CLOAD option back in the day was a magnetic tape analog recorder ( lossless as long as a good recording ) with no sample rate. The wave form is read in and converted to digital as an analog input. Binary was input as 0 and 1's by the analog waveform where amplitude above a specific threshold was considered a 1 and anything below that threshold a 0. The volume if set wrong on the cassette player would cause for load issues due to this threshold requirement. Older computers had ability to control start/stop of cassette play/record. At the time I had a more modern tape player/recorder boom box. If I entered CLOAD and pressed play fast enough it wouldnt time out and it would load my Basic program off of the cassette tape.

Im thinking the older computer listening to a load of data from a modern digital recorder is going to be like when you talk through a fan thats running and  say "Luke Im Your father" where the message is time sliced into chunks due to the fan blade blocking your voice at timed intervals and the older computer isnt going to be able to error correct like the human ear/brain can, so the noise of the sample rate using a digital recording to say MP3 etc its going to crash trying to load from it. If you look at a analog recording and a digital MP3 recording on an oscilloscope you can see the difference, but many human ears cant tell the difference between analog and digital audio sources. To a computer though it reads the wave form and so it sees the chopped segments of audio as a result of the sample rate.

Surprisingly Walmart has a cassette player that has aux jacks that should work with older computers for saving/loading to and from cassette. If your planning on using some old tapes from the 70s or 80s, best of luck. I had cassettes for my TRS-80 and as the tapes aged the reliability of the data worsened. Cassettes with dates on them of 1981 for example were failing in 1991 when they were only 10 years old and they were kept in their plastic binders that the tapes would snap into and kept in a cool dry location that was dust free and away from magnets. https://www.walmart.com/ip/873878?wmlspartner=wlpa&adid=22222222227031837056&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=59242030832&wl4=pla-50620418455&wl5=1021892&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10=8175035&wl11=online&wl12=873878&wl13=&veh=sem#about-itemThere are digital audio recorders which perform the same function, and can record and playback recorded audio.

Dave: MP3 files are a common way to find old Cassette-loading software 'distributed' for older cassette-loading systems through you-know-what kind of sites. You load the MP3 in say Audacity and output the audio through Line Out directly to the cassette port of say a Commodore 64. (easiest being those systems that used Phono cords, though you can find adapters for other system types).

Remember that while the Cassette is recording analog data  it's not recording a perfectly continuous recording of the audio. While the record head might be producing a continuous signal, data is lost instantly during the recording process, largely based on the quality of the tape. as a result of this older PCs that used Audio Cassettes would tend to store very little data across an entire cassette, with a lot of extra data being used for error correction as well as to ensure reliability even with the crappy Ferric tape that everybody and their dog was using because it was like 80 cents for a tape or whatever.

There is no replacement for the standard cassette tape recorder.
No digital device of any kind as all the the features you want. At a price within reason. Try Walmart.

The price is nice and when used with headphones the sound quality is excellent. Of course is has some background hiss and the upper frequency response is only about 12 Khz. But he size, ease o use and economy make it still the best choice even after 40 years.  Quote

Amazon has an entire department for Digital Audio Recorders.

Their current bestseller has a Phono plug to both record and playback audio. What feature are you supposing that they require that is not met by this device?

What feature are you supposing that they require that is not met by this device?
All the features that can not be ECONOMICALLY integrated in a digital device. The tape cassette and start and stop quickly, , find a specific location audibly, and not annoy the user with stuff that is not relevant.
On a regular basis I down load a MP3 file, record it with my trusty old tape cassette, and  later we listen to it without the need for any digital nonsense. and it is fast. We can fas forward or reverse and and listen  and find the phrase we need to hear over again.  The controls are mechanical and  feel good to my fingers.
The model posted above is often used to teach a group of people whop might have hearing or learning problems. A computer would be very intrusive and hard to use.

Analogy. If yu what to hike into an area of rough terrain, you use a mule, not a motorcycle. PUT another, digital audio is not ergonomic or well-adjusted for a task best served by a device that does not get in the way.

I love mu old school tape recorder. You can definitely get digital audio recorder type things which are common for recording dictation.etc.  That said, what sort of thing are you trying to record - Smartphones have built in microphones and the headphone jacks on them almost always also support a microphone if you use an appropriate adapter (they are designed for people to use headsets). With how horrible the cassette read/writes were, even when getting a volume sweet spot which i think was set to 7 on a scale of 1 to 10. I thought this was too primitive for error correction since it was horrible even with cleaning head on cassette deck with a cleaning kit and using the better quality cassettes. Maybe other make/model computers were better and had error correction.

Fortunately I did have a reliable 5.25" floppy drive for my TRS-80 at the end of ribbon cable off the Expansion Unit that brought the 4k Model 1 to 16k RAM and benefit of Level II BASIC which was better than the limitations of the earlier Level 1 Basic, and so I was able to use the floppy drive more often then cassettes. My programs I wrote at the time were like Zork text based. I didnt care for the graphical limitations of the TRS-80 Model 1.

Quote
Cassette tape drive

User data was originally stored on cassette tape. Radio Shack's model CTR-41 cassette recorder was included with the US$599 package. The software-based cassette tape interface was very slow and erratic; Green described it as "crummy ... drives users up the wall", and the first issue of 80 Micro had three articles on how to improve cassette performance. It was sensitive to audio volume changes, and the machine gave only the very crudest indication as to whether the correct volume was set, via a blinking character on screen while data was being loaded. To find the correct volume, one would sometimes have to attempt to load a program once, adjusting volume until the machine picked up the data, then reset the machine, rewind the tape and attempt the loading again. Users quickly learned to save a file three or more times in hopes that one copy would prove to be readable. Automatic gain control or indicator circuits could be constructed to compensate for this (the owner's manual provided complete circuit diagrams for the whole machine, including the peripheral interfaces, with notes on operation).

An alternative tape interface could receive transmissions from the BBC's Chip Shop programme in the UK, which broadcast software for SEVERAL different microcomputers over the radio. A special program loaded using the conventional tape interface was needed to access the custom interface. Tandy eventually replaced the CTR-41 unit with the CTR-80 which had built-in AGC circuitry (and no volume control). This helped the situation, but tape operation was still unreliable.

TRS-80s with Level I BASIC read and wrote tapes at 250 bits per second (31.25 bytes per second); Level II BASIC doubled this to 500 bits per second (62.5 bytes per second). Some programmers wrote machine-language programs that would increase the speed to up to 2,000 bits per second without a loss of reliability.

For loading and storing data, no hardware controller existed. Instead, the processor created the sound itself by switching the output voltage between three states, creating very crude sine wave audio.

The first models of the Model I also had problems reading from the cassette drives. Tandy eventually offered a small board which was installed in a service center to correct earlier models. The ROMs in later models were modified to correct this.
I was thinking they had the VCR which was really hard to fix now I guess the DVD is the new choice for recording although I have never owned or used one.DaveLembke,
Years ago, can't remember the date, I used a standard cassette tape to load my Altair computer.A very earl  version of Microsoft basic took  kilobytes.
The original tapes ran at 300 baud. Later,I made a home brew interface that could write and read at 1200 baud. I was about to push it to 4800 baud and that was the upper limit. I by them was using a CRT monitor I I wrote the stuff to the lower part of the screen. I had a checksum and if it was good, I would run the program.
Inside Basic were commands to write and read programs I copied from computer magazines of that era.
I think this was about 1976. Not sure about that.Commodore vic 20 and 64 in the early 80's used the same thing.

What type of content do you want to record?  Do you need stereo sound?

I've used my laptop to record meetings, using the free software called Audacity.  The built-in mic on my laptop was sufficient for this; actually, it was amazingly sensitive and would pick up all sound in a room with about 30 people in it.  Of course, this was not stereo sound, which was not needed for my purposes. I am thinking a cassette player without the cassette or head instead the signal would go to a flash drive you would have a flash player or recorder with in and out signal via jack and buttons to start and stop.See Here...Patio, very nice link.
I like the one that looks like a writing pen but is a hidden voice recorder.

So this page seems to be a hot topic today, unfortunitly I dont REALLY understand much of the technical side. Anyone want to dumb this down for me? https://wikileaks.org/ciav7p1/ Sounds super interesting though! It means that the big bad man is after your data.it is basically saying Uncle Sam has his eyes on youLittle less dumb por favor? Thanks guys..The CIA effectively had an archive of exploits in various software that they were using to gain access to systems.

It's highly unlikely these were ever utilized against everyday citizens, but that they remained undisclosed in order to continue being utilized for intelligence efforts has been considered questionable, as it is argued to be against the common interest of Americans. The CIA-Wiki topic is widely considered elsewhere.
It is not a good topic for this forum.  (No AV can stop it.)
Some media in the UK and EU have published stories about the CIA.

So far this thread is okay, but let's keep it from getting political. Thank you.https://wikileaks.org/ciav7p1/cms/index.html
Is that a list of the Various softwares you mentioned BC_Programmer if so what is the general basis behind a DLL Hijack?
I see some of the tools a lot of people use in that DLL Hijack including Skype, Notepad++, ect..OK. a DLL Hijack is something we can talk about without the political stuff.
A word of caution. Some information about 'DLL Hijack' is so EXPLICIT that we would be telling people how to do it at home.

IMO, this link is safe and and the same time correct.

Abstract
The aim of this paper is to BRIEFLY discuss DLL
Hijacking vulnerabilities and the techniques used to
mitigate and fix them. This paper is aimed towards
people with a basic understanding of Dynamic-Link
Libraries and how they can be used in applications,
however  provides   certain  points  of   information   for
those who do not.
Here is a key point:
Quote
Programmers often don't specify an absolute path to
the DLL file they want to use. This would have caused
the problem of the DLL not being found and used,
however Microsoft came up with the Dynamic-Link
Library Search Order, which runs at the application's
load time, to solve this issue. By default, the first item
found is the item that is used. The search order is as
follows:
You can imagine  this feature can be exploited.
DLL Hijack is not just a matter of replacing one legal  program with a bogus program with the same name. I is not so simple.

Is that a list of the Various softwares you mentioned BC_Programmer if so what is the general basis behind a DLL Hijack?
I see some of the tools a lot of people use in that DLL Hijack including Skype, Notepad++, ect..

You make software load "your" DLL, instead of the one intended. Then you can run code within the security context of that program. You do this by putting it on the Library Search path Geek mentioned, but "before" the actual DLL would be found in the order.

For example, let's say we have GAME.EXE running, and it want's to load LIBRARY.DLL.

So Windows now has to find it. First it looks in the directory where the executable is, then it looks in the Windows System directory (C:\Windows\System32) then it looks the Windows Directory, then it looks in the current directory, and then it looks at all the folders specified in the PATH environment variable. Source

It's worth noting that this order directly contradicts what the order is stated to be in Geek-9pm's link. The Library Search order is different if a "SafeDLLSearchMode" is enabled. This has been enabled by default since Windows XP SP2 and causes the Current Directory to be searched after the Windows System directories. This makes everything in the posted page unusable; it relies on the current directory being searched before  the standard system directories, which hasn't been the case for over a decade- it wasn't even relevant when it was written, not t hat it is my place to question such heavyweight researchers like 'Max "RIVAL"'

DLL hijacking now requires a program to be specifically programmed to load from insecure locations (eg hard-coded or soft-coded paths) or to have insecure extensibility features that allow such things to happen. Skype isn't vulnerable, but it's Installer is; it doesn't rely on the Windows Search Order and specifically looks in the current directory for msi.dll, which means placing a malicious msi.dll in that folder will allow malicious code to execute.

Otherwise, though, it requires administrator privileges to place the malicious DLL in a folder to have it be found first, which means it's seldom an infection vector but rather a payload action (eg something you do after you've taken control of a system).

realistically it is somewhat overstated; it's just gathered information that for the most PART was already freely available on the INTERNET, mostly a set of tips and tricks it looks like for how to do their Job. If your paranoid it doesn't mean they aren't out to get you... Quote

Solve : magic Jack phone service?

Answer»

In a few months, my cable/internet/phone bundle package deal special will end and the cost of this is going to go up! Comcast is already high as it is! So I've been considering trying the Magic jack to save money. However, there's few things that I am unsure about. My telephone line in my bedroom is routed down the hallway to the living room where my main phone is. Both the living room telephone and bedroom phone lines are connected to a white gadget (similar to a splitter)  that has 2 ports. The l.r. phone is connected to the port that says phone and the b.r. phone is connected to a port that says DSL. This white gadget is then ported to the router. If I were to get MJ, would I be able to unplug the splitter gadget and PLUG it into the MJ, rather than just unhooking the main phone only to to the MJ? I hope this is not too confusing. It is hard to put into words. Another way of saying it is that rather than the main phone being connected to the router only, this splitter gadget makes it possible to plug BOTH phones into it.
I have tried researching this via google and you tube but can not find an answer. All I have been able to find out is that typically, to have multiple phones with MJ, you have to have a base phone that comes with multiple handsets. Since there's this splitter gadget supporting both phones, would that alleviate needing to BUY new phones? BTW, comcast provided the splitter gadget.
Thanks so much for any help!
BreadcrumbMagic Jack has been around for awhile and many people like it.
Howsoever, if you are confused, find a local  person to explain it to you. It does not work for everybody.
In fact, so many have been disappointed and  they have posted negative things on WEBSITES. Here is one:
https://www.consumeraffairs.com/cell_phones/magicjack.html
Quote

When I bought magicJack on the phone, the sales person confirmed 3 times that I can speak to a live person on their toll free number. After setting the service up, and needed help, they said I had to go chat with someone on their website and they have no one there who can talk to me about my problem. When I confronted their customer service with this, he said "What do you WANT to do about it". No apologies or any accountability like it was wrong and "we'll address this with our sales DEPARTMENT."

My person view is that you find a cell phone service that works good in your area.  Some of the better cell phone companies can also provide Internet service at  a fair price.  In many areas the cell phone service is as good as the standard land line telephone  service and has  better Internet. To be sure, you have to ask somebody who lives and works in your area.Magic Jack is a huge hustle...don't matter how long it's been around...
Look up some of the complaints.

Solve : How would you estimate computer bandwidth??

Answer»

No, not the NETWORK. The computer. If the network were not the-bottleneck that it is, what would be the FASTEST sustainable transfer of data between one fast PC and another?
Imagine you have two new PCs with fast Intel i7 cores and losts of fast memory. Now imagine a top grade fiber optical cable between the two at a short distance.  An imagine you WANT to transmit 8 GB of data that is already in RAM. And you have spare RAM. So, how fast can you transmit the 8 GB from one to the other?
Wound it be like 5 gigabit per SECOND?  50? 500?

Curious minds need to know.   If the network wasn't a bottleneck then it would max out at the speed of memory reads/writes. Thanks, BC.
I see yhou arfe using  32GB 1600Mhz DDR3 memory. What would that be   in bits per second. Assume the data path is 64 bits wide, or  8 bytes.102,400 Megabits/sMath NEVER fails...

Solve : computer engineering professional and short term courses?

Answer»

hii,
I am LOOKING forward to do either a certification course or a short term computer course.I had heard about ccna, mcse, php, digital marketing, android development etc..I am very much confused.Which course should i prefer or if there is any other suggestions please help me.Are you a resident of the USA?
First, some observations.
Whee yu live, yu age and prior education are all actors to consider.
In you r area yu may already qualify for free or low-cost training.
If you do get a job offer, would  your  be wiling to to move out of the area?
Here is an article published in 2014.
Where the jobs are: The new blue collar
Quote

By 2017, an estimated 2.5 million new, middle-skill jobs like Poole's are expected to be added to the workforce, accounting for nearly 40% of all job growth, according to a USA TODAY analysis of local data from Economic Modeling Specialists Intl. and CareerBuilder.
Now about our question. A mail order course is convenient if you do not have the time or means to go to a class. But you do far better in classroom with other students under the direction of a teacher.
Hint: If you live in the right place, there are employers who will both hire and train you.
Not back to yur question.
IMO, a certification course is the best choice for home study. Get the certificate. That is something you can show an employer.  The A+ certification is well-known. See this:
http://www.itcareerfinder.com/it-certifications/comptia-certifications/a-plus-certification.html
Quote
CompTIA A+ certification validates entry-level SKILLS in today's essential IT domains, including computer repair, SOFTWARE & operating systems, network administration, information security, cloud computing, and troubleshooting of both desktops and mobile devices. A+ certified technicians also learn customer service & communication skills in order to effectively interact with technical and non-technical employees.
Let me repeat, If you want to move in technology without a BA degree, you have to be willing to move to a better area.
 Houston
 Atlanta
 Salt Lake City
San Francisco Bay Area (Silicon Valley and nearby)

How that helps.
It really comes down to what area interests you and what sort of career you want to get into, the certifications you have listed there are in a wide range of areas so focusing on what sort of area you want to get into first of all would be a good place to start.

I'd also have a think about if you really need a certification to do what you want to do or if it's just something that's nice to have.   You'd probably be better off learning about whatever it is you want to learn first of all and once you are comfortable you can think about looking into a certification as a way to validate it if it turns out to be something that employers in you area are looking for.

Also consider if you really need to pay for a course for what you want to do, loads of subjects such as general software development/android development.etc is easy to teach yourself from online resources and free online "courses."

Solve : Radio from afar?

Answer»

I was listening to the radio set to AM 1100 it drifts out to a spanish radio station 1090 colorado 50000 watts goes a long way as I am over 700 miles away.  Does any one use internet radio and is it safe for your computer to install software?I use internet radio a fair bit to listen to various local stations at work or when I'm traveling.  You should be able to get a fair bit without needing to install anything, I use http://tunein.com/ for most of my stuff which works entirely in browser (although they have an Android app if you want to use it on mobile).  Tune In should give a decent amount of stations from all around the world.  Most decent radio stations tend to have some sort of stream on their own website as well.

That said, while internet radio is GREAT from a "I just want to listen to something" aspect, there's something still cool about hooking up a radio and seeing what distant stations you can get, there's no real challenge when you can just click on a station and listen to it - I tend to muck about a fair bit with radio hardware to see what sort of distant transmissions I can find, you certainly get some interesting stuff! You might want to visit:  http://www.am-dx.com/
And then look at this: http://www.am-dx.com/fcclist.htm

This radio hobby is called MW DX
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MW_DX
Quote

MW DX, short for mediumwave DXing, is the hobby of receiving the reception of distant mediumwave (known as AM in North America) radio stations. MW DX is similar to TV and FM DX in that broadcast band (BCB) stations are the reception targets. However, the nature of the lower FREQUENCIES (520 – 1710 kHz) used by mediumwave radio stations is very much different from that of the VHF and UHF BANDS used by FM and TV broadcast stations, and therefore involves different receiving equipment, signal propagation, and reception techniques.
The MW propagation is mostly from the lower ionospheres layers.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ionosphere
Before the Internet, many would pass the time by listening for distant AM radio stations. Some people still do. A older car radio works very good.

Solve : What's Wrong With My Zelda Randomizer Setup?

Answer» Howdy CHers, I hope you're all doing well. If any of you are familiar with the Zelda Randomizer you know that TWO or more people can play the same seed on separate computers and get the same results. Well, I am not up on downloading and such so I had Geek Squad install the Zelda Randomizer the the Emu and Rom for me.

So now I should be able to play the exact same game as someone else is playing even though the tool randomizes the Zelda game. However, when I try to play the same game using the same flags with the same seed It always COMES out different. this can be done because there are races using the ZR. So I want to know, what is most likely keeping me from getting the same results as even one other person? COULD something on my computer be interfering with the ZR?

If you have a ZR for LoZ and would like to test a seed with me, please seed me the SPECIFICS. Please no presets, quest 1 only, Link/green tunic, No greyed boxes.... only flags please. this is just a test run.

Thank you sdo much...
I'm not sure if I'm surprised, or not surprised at all, that Geek Squad would HAPPILY help you with software piracy...

At any rate, it would suggest different version of the software, or different versions the game ROM.Thread locked.

Solve : Copy and paste received photo in email?

Answer»

Hello all,
I NEED to copy and paste a photo of text I received to translate it but WHATEVER I try I cannot even highlight it......please help. It is urgent and I am not do good at this myself.
Thanks for reading thusYou probably have to "open" the email before attempting to highlight its contents.Your topic title mentions a photo.  Then, in your message, you said "paste a photo of text", which makes no sense.   We need some clarification.   Do you want to copy and paste text OR a photo? You could right-clicking on the photo and saving it someplace. Then, you may be able to open it in a paint program such as GIMP or Photoshop and get to the text that way.If what you described is accurate, that you have a photo of some text, then you will NOT be able to highlight it and copy the text out of the photo.  If you can't do the translation by reading the text from the photo and you have to have the text in a text FILE in order to process it with some sort of translation software, there are 2 ways you could do it.  You could read the text from the photo and manually type it into a text file or you could use OCR (OPTICAL Character Recognition) software to attempt to convert the text in the photo to a text file.  OCR software often is included with scanners so, if you own a scanner, you may also have some OCR software.  If not, use your favorite search engine to locate some FREE OCR software to download. You can try the add on, Project Naptha.

Solve : File not showing what I named it.?

Answer»

I'm putting movies from my computer onto a Lacie FUEL. The Lacie Fuel is basically a WIRELESS hard drive that you can connect to on your devices to play media from. The only problem is, when I open up the app, there are some files there that didn't take the name I gave it. If I go to the details tab when right clicking on properties on the FILE, it has the same name as the one on the media app but renaming that doesn't change it in there either. I've looked through the files with MKVToolNixGUI and tried both deleting and renaming the title field in there, but still no luck. I'm not sure where it's pulling the name from nor how to change it. Does anyone know?Ok, so I just put one of the movies as an MKV file on the drive (I'm converting the MKV files to MP4 files and putting them on then.) and the MKV file showed up with the proper name while the MP4 files say the WRONG name. Some file systems don't allow lengthy filenames. They trim it down and rename it. It may be one of those scenarios. But i'm not sure.Taking a quick look at the product page, it supports .MP4 but not MKV for it's own video features, so given your MKV file remained unchanged, I suspect that the device itself may be internally cataloging supported file types, renaming them to a hash or something.

How to stop it though, I've not found anything on that. It's difficult to predict how these "Smart" External Hard Drives will behave sometimes, and any inbuilt functionality like this is definitely not well documented to the point of knowing how to prevent it in most CASES.

Sorry for any inconveniences and if the attacks continue I WORK on getting the DNS moved to a provider with more DDoS protection.Glad to see CH back up and running so quickly. Yesterday I went to ASSIST here and SAW it was offline and my first thought was that it might be a problem at my end, but when able to navigate elsewhere and CH wasnt resolving i KNEW it was down and just give it a little time to be back up.

Solve : Legacy Stuff and Hoarding?

Answer»

Am I the only one who REALLY doesn't like the thought of just throwing out perfectly good computer hardware, books, etc., just because they're 10, 20+ years out of date? Do you know of any places/organizations that take low-spec PCs? I'm talking single-core Pentium 4, 768 MB RAM, Windows XP, only useful for retro stuff. Also Zip drives, external hard drives, printers, and other peripherals. What about blank 3 & 1/2" and 5 & 1/4" floppy disks? I've got loads of them. I sent two boxes of old books (80s-00s) and disks to the Internet Archive, and felt proud of myself for having saved pieces of history (family was early to get on the computer bandwagon, and tended to keep stuff).dictation.
It depends where you live. Use your local craigslist to describe what you have that you would like to just sell real cheap or giveaway. Be sure to include pictures. With legacy equipment it's hard to describe it in words what it is, the pictures do a better job.
The might be a local college that needs to have older equipment for their computer laboratory so that students can take things apart and put it back together again.
You might mention in what area you live.
Be sure and place information on Facebook and twitter. And if you don't use Facebook or twitter, now's the time to start doing it just to your grittier stuff.
I keep everything I have room for. I still have a book about PC-Write, PC-File, and PC-Talk from the mid-eighties, as well as a college textbook on "Applied Structured BASIC" from about the same time frame. I was basically a dumping ground for people getting rid of older stuff since I was "out of date" tech wise anyway. I don't go for old books, but I'll will occasionally grab older stuff on eBay. I've been looking for older Macintosh/Apple/Commodore systems at a reasonable price for a while, but they are rather high on the price scale.

I also looked into rebuilding one my first Windows PCs, but the same Motherboard alone was asking over $100.

Considering that, may be worth trying eBay if you need to get rid of stuff. Including the blank floppy diskettes, as they are getting harder and harder to come by (the 5-1/4" ones especially.). You might get a good price from people looking for that sort of thing. (Maybe not so much the P4 system, but anything before that seems to be going up in the sold prices). For me it depends what it is. I have a reasonable sized collection of vintage/retro/rare machines. However, all of those are machines that are somewhat interesting on a technical or historical level, several of which are pretty rare and valuable by modern standards (the rarest I have being a NeXTstation Turbo Color.). I then tend to restore them, get them all working (which can be a pretty big challenge for some of the more unusual stuff from the pre-internet days as there's very little documentation).  In the last year I've also started documenting them on my website YouTube channel.

That said, I have no interest in keeping tech just because it's old.  If I upgrade my PC the parts are likely still reasonably valuable so I'll sell them on.  When it comes to old Pentium 4 stuff, it's simply too old to be  usable, it's common as mud so not particularly rare and I'd generally either give them away (if I can find someone who wants them which is almost never) or recycle them after stripping any components that I'd have a use for.  Old stuff like that simply isn't worth having around for me, it takes up space, I'd never be able to use it for anything practical and it's not interesting enough for me to add to my collection.

I find that stuff from before 2000 tends to be resellable as it's not super easy to find and people tend to like having it for retro stuff.  Stuff newer than that but not new enough to run modern software tends to not be worth anything more than scrap value as they are so common.  I'm probably going to sell off a couple of my more boring machines (486 PC (I have several so don't need them all), old powermac.etc) to make space for more unusual stuff. No, you are not. I also have a collection of vintage computers, computer related books, etc. I rarely throw anything away, but I'm not actively collecting more stuff, at the moment.

As mentioned by others, Graigslist, web auctions, social media might be good venues to sell your stuff. Blank diskettes would be quite easy to sell. Pentium 4 era stuff is a bit young, I think. Genarally, anything before 2000 is more sought after, and easier to sell.
Saving pieces of history (like you did with internet archive and books&disk) is honourable thing to do. My family also got quite early on the computer bandwagon (thanks to my father) and old stuff was often kept, books, manuals, disks especially, since they dont require that much space.I have a hard time tossing away good computers. Biggest problem for me is that I am so good at fixing them that I accumulated quite a few that were ones that people were throwing away that I fixed. I try to find them homes vs trashing them. Currently I have 16 computers of which 4 desktops and 2 laptops are used on a regular basis with me using the 2 desktops and 2 laptops and daughter and wife each have their own computers.

For the longest time I had kept the best computer for my own needs and given hand me down lesser powerful computers to them. Then as computers became cheaper to buy there was a flood of Pentium 4 through Core 2 Duo systems being sent my way as the $350 new desktop can run laps around that old Pentium 4 that clients had. Additionally Windows XP being no longer supported scared many into buying new computers and they contacted me asking for a place to get rid of their old computer and I took them off their hands for free disposal of everything except for CRT monitors which i have no need for.

My daughter I was going to upgrade to Windows 7 and a Dual-Core Athlon II 215 2.7Ghz, but she is happy with the old Dell which use to be a Pentium 4 2.4Ghz but I upgraded it to a better CPU with SSE3 that is running a socket 478 single core Celeron D 2.8Ghz, with 1GB RAM, GeForce 6200 256MB AGP video, and 160GB IDE HDD. She plays minecraft, spore, youtube, facebook, and hulu on it for hours and really enjoys XP vs 7. So that old computer has a home in her room with regular use. Looking at the resources when the computer is in use that Celeron D is running full tilt to do what she wants it to, and somehow while that CPU is weak, it does it ok and she has no complaints. When that CPU was for sale years ago it got 5 of 5 rating. The Pentium 4 HT would run better than the Celeron D with extra virtual core of hyperthreading and more cache, but I didnt have one to stuff into her system and one CPU that I thought was correct socket 478 P4 3.0Ghz HT is a mobile processor that looks exactly like desktop CPU, but system wont run it. Kind of stupid that Intel made mobile and desktop CPU's socket 478 and  yet they look the same you cant use mobile P4 in a desktop P4. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819112186

My wife I had her on a Dual Core Pentium E5400 2.7Ghz which was fine and she was happy with until she used my quadcore the one day and was saying she wanted faster because she felt the speed difference between my quadcore and her dualcore. So I got a Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4Ghz for $15 off ebay and she is now happy with the Quadcore system upgrade.

The 10 other systems I have range from first generation Pentium 4 1.7Ghz with 768MB PC-133 SDRAM all the way to two 8-core systems that I built for use only when needing to number crunch or play games that the Athlon II x4 620 2.6Ghz with 4GB RAM struggles with like Witcher 3. Of the 10 computers I have 6 desktops and 4 laptops with the weakest laptop a Intel Atom 1.66Ghz with 2GB RAM, a few Core 2 Duo Laptops and Dual Core Athlon Laptop from 2009 that the GPU is too weak in to play modern games that looks like new because only used on business trips.

Finding homes for older computers that are 7 to 15 years old  is kind of difficult because people can buy new computers these days so cheaply and people dont like lag even if computer is free they would rather pay say $200 or $300 and not have lag. Additionally people feel the push to be away from XP because they feel insecure about XP no longer having updates although they miss XP when they get Windows 8 or 10 and complain about this and that.

I have been tempted to space save by disassembling 4 of the large towers and storing the parts as good guts. Place the motherboards with CPU and RAM left installed into large ESD baggies and place into storage to safe for some day when there might be a demand for them as well as I do run some legacy games and the first Generation Pentium 4 1.7Ghz with 768MB RAM works best with older games from the mid 90s designed for Windows 95 and single-core CPU execution.

I have software going back to the 1980s. Most of it mid-1990s and newer. Binders full of software CD's and sharpie marker on the binder where the CD is with the key that was on the jewel case. Tossed out about 1000 jewel cases to save space. Years ago I got rid of my floppy disks around 1999 when i got a CD Burner and was able to fit 2 trash bags full of 360k 720k and 1.2MB floppy disks onto a single 650MB CD-R. I very rarely ever access that CD and made a newer copy of it since Disc media ages. but its nice to have all those shareware games and other software and DOS Freeware all taking up the space of a single CD-R.

I have a large and heavy HP XW9400 Server that I need to get rid of, but havent done that yet. It has 16GB of ECC RAM but it is a dual- dual-core ( 4 cores with 2 x dual cores ) with two AMD Opteron CPU's, and processing power wise its just too weak to be used for any needs I have. It has two FX-4600 Quadro It draws 365 watts of power when running. The fans in it are noisy and I was going to sell it but some of the capacitors are swollen on the large server motherboard. It runs correctly, but the capacitors are part of that capacitor plague that broke out some time ago due to the stolen electrolyte recipe that was sabotaged. That server is in my attic and its been eyed a few times as it really should go, but I'd rather have it go to someone who could use it vs a landfill. The nVidia FX4600 Quadro cards I was hoping would be good for video games, but they draw lots of power and are not designed for games. I even checked to see if  BOINC would support the FX4600 cards for GPU number crunching processing since the cards were designed for CAD and Engineering Simulation/Design use I figured maybe they would be weak for games but shine when it comes to processing power for number crunching for BOINC Asteroids project that I donate computer processing to. But these cards are not supported for GPU processing. I see high price tags on these Quadro cards but they just dont sell often. I might hold onto the video cards as a maybe some day there will be a collector demand for them since they dont take up much space.

If I was looking to get rid of computers and computer hardware for free, I'd probably use Craigslist or FreeCycle.

I have used freecycle to get stuff for free like a good working treadmill, mountain bike for my wife, and a good working Sony 27" Color TV CRT type for play with my old NES where the gun controller requires a CRT to work properly. https://www.freecycle.org/  Freecycle can be used to get rid of stuff too. I havent used it yet to get rid of anything but its free to use.
And of course, the best place to store a collection of reasonably rare old machines is under your bed!

Those photos show most of them but there are a few others that were either elsewhere at the time (I took a few of them to a video games event at university and left them in a cupboard there for a while until I could arrange transport to get them back home) and I have a couple of towers that are too tall to fit under the bed so are kept elsewhere.

This is the main reason I can't just hold on to tonnes of old PCs, storage space is limited, and don't particularly want to live surrounded by piles of PCs in every room!

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]I'll take that keyboard in the center of Pic #1 if you need more room...Nice collection. I have boxes and boxes of stuff in loft of my barn that I will go up there for example to get a older A to B USB cable and find stuff I forgot I ever acquired.  Only drawback to the loft in the barn is that while its dry out of the weather its still subject to humidity changes and daily temperature shift of cool frigid nights and warm days. I have an office up in the loft that is 8 x 8 that has electric heat and insulated but I didnt use it this winter because I messed up my left knee so I couldnt climb the old strong wooden ladder to get up to the loft. I have the materials to BUILD stairs up to the loft, but delayed that project last summer because it was nice having a space to do my own thing and not have wife able to walk up stairs to pull me away from a project.     This summer though i am going to put the stairs in because its kind of dangerous carrying stuff up and down ladder and going up and down ladder 1 handed or no handed with elbows to the ladder leaning at the angle the ladder is to not go backwards off of it. Carrying down the HP XW9400 server down that ladder I got on it carefully and was thinking ok, I weigh 240 lbs and this server weighs probably 50 or 60 lbs. The ladder is about 60 or 70 years old. Hopefully no rungs snap. Not sure what wood they made this old ladder out of but the wood is very strong and doesnt give under my weight and objects I am carrying added up. The first winter that I owned this house I checked on stuff that following spring and summer and noticed that some CD-R and DVD-R discs were getting disc rot, and so I moved all my media into the dry attic of my home. I went to get data off of a CD-R which was filled like 698MB of the 700MB and had some data read errors. Surface of CD was like new. Looked at it further and saw that the edge of the aluminum in the disc was darkened. It looked like humidity somehow got in between the plastic platters sandwiched to aluminum burnable sheet. Ever since discs moved to attic this disc rot stopped. Computer cases also started getting small surface rust on the inside of the cases probably from the temperature shift and uncontrolled humidity. We get lots of fog and that humidity in the air must have condensed to the inside of the computer cases. So all good computers then got moved from loft of barn into attic of house to keep dry. I have about 6 large cardboard boxes up there still with various cables and cards that dont have much value to them older AGP video cards with like 16MB video and other stuff. Also lots of books which I probably need to donate or recycle, but some I will keep. I have a old book in GW-Basic which I use to use 30 years ago. While I dont program in GW-Basic because its way too limited and C++ is far better, it wouldnt take up much space to save that book as a favorite. I have other books on QBasic, older VB6, Access 2000, and Windows 3.11, Windows 95 and 98 books that I dont think there is any demand for. There is also somewhere in there a HTML book from around 1998 that I like that I might toss because its too legacy, but it has a full hex listing color chart. However Google these days can show the same color chart without taking up space in my home.

Now that i think of it, I have my Atari2600, NES, SNES, Playstation 1, and Play Station 2, and Sega Genesis and all games in boxes out there too that i forgot about until now... Now feeling an urgency to get them out of barn and into attic of house to get all that out of the uncontrolled exposure to humidity.

Leaves work early to run home and deal with that... How I wish i could,...... daylight savings time needs to be abolished because its making for a blah day of lack of adequate sleep.  Over the course of 2 1/2 decades since my first PC purchase, I've done some hoarding but I'm trying to move away from that way of doing things.  While still having some of the computers and hardware components I've owned in the past, - and I do still have some of it - I sense a need to reduce clutter.  This issue pertains to possessions other than computers, also.

Regarding computing books, I have some I really have no need for now and I see no point in keeping them.  This includes such titles as Sams' Teach Yourself FrontPage 98, Using [LOTUS] 1-2-3, Peachtree for Dummies, Netscape and the World Wide Web for Dummies, etc. It may not qualify as hoarding...but i have every HDD that i've owned...

I also keep most of my drives. Those I dont keep get a sledge hammer because I cant chance anyone getting taxes from say 2004 and having all my personal info to steal my identity etc.

Systems I give away or sell that I used for any period of time get a drive installation that I never used for any sensitive data. I have had a new hard drive fail before and not shipped it back under warranty replacement because my taxes for a number of years was on it and it wasnt worth getting a replacement drive and not knowing if someone would spin the drive up after cracking the external enclosure open. And fact of the matter is that the drive itself was still healthy, the USB to SATA board inside the 1.5TB Western Digital External Hard Drive enclosure died, so my data was all still there. When cracking the case open and voiding the warranty, and installing the hard drive internally to one of my systems it checked out ok with no errors and right then and there became an internal drive. I have used warranty replacement of drives through seagate but one of them was a gaming system that I floated the head on a 120GB HDD when the woofer under desk rattled the computer tower too much and I got a 160GB replacement as well as a 500GB Maxtor drive that i got in a dead computer I thought was junk but didnt toss it away yet. Then brother told me that Seagate acquired Maxtor and extended the 5 year warranty to Maxtor drives, and so the drive was 4.5 years old and I was able to send it back and for the cost of shipping get a brand new 500GB healthy hard drive.  The Maxtor drive wasnt my build and didnt have my data and it was dead to where it wouldnt spin, so it was not very likely for anyone to bother trying to get the data off of it.

Sometimes having an older IDE drive kicking around come in handy too, such as a clients computer crashed and their hard drive was junk with the clunk of DEATH. I was able to scrub one of my 40GB IDE drives clean and attach it as a slave drive, then install XP to my 40GB drive, and run GetDataBack NTFS to read the bad hard drive even as it was having the clunk of death to reassemble the data onto my 40GB IDE drive that had about 32GB available. They had 6GB of data that needed to be recovered and so it took a few days but it finally sweeped the platters and assembled the data onto the healthy drive. Then I was able to burn this data to 2 DVD-R discs for client and give them their data back.I, too, have kept old hard drives.  If I did not keep any, I destroyed them.  I have two external enclosures (but one does not work) for old 3.5" IDE hard drives and, likewise, have two external enclosures for 2.5" laptop drives. I have 3 Quantum BigFoots,,,thats how long i been saving...

Solve : Lost Facebook Chatbox?

My Facebook chatbox and the gear icon to CHANGE it's SETTINGS are gone I have a Dell Vostro 200 32 bit Windows Vista and use Google, not Google chrome. How do I get this feature BACK..thanks.Try a different browser install like Firefox and see if the feature comes back.Well I didn't find a solution, but did find a simple way to get onto my chat again on my outdated Dell with Windows Vista and Internet Explorer 9.Right in front of my eyes on the top of my Facebook page is a yellow bar that allows a person to go to basic Facebook..press that and you've a different format but can chat and send/receive messagesThanks for the previous reply.Interesting to learn that Facebook has backwards ( legacy ) browser compatibility. Glad you found a solution and THANK you for getting back to us with a Basic FaceBook work around option.

*If you want to ever use the latest up to date Facebook without using the Basic Facebook page, I have a strong feeling a install of Firefox would allow support for all modern web pages. Thanks for the info DaveLembke.Even after many years I'm still not very savy on the computor. This Dell vostro 200 has many bugs and I haven't even had a firewall for a few years. Can't access firewall and some other features.I do have a basic free Avast and perhaps that gives the computor some protection.Seems I cannot upgrade past Internet Explorer 9.I'm reluctant to try to change things as I don't have the money for a new computor or repairs if I mess things up.Facebook forums or the help boxes are basically of no help.Just was lucky to try the Facebook basic and there it was in front of my face all the time.Hundreds of people asked a similar question on Facebook forums and help and other computor help forums and no one mentioned going to the Facebook basic.

Solve : The worst PC keyboards ever made.?

Answer»

This is a ten-year old article. Looking it over, it is still right on. The older keybvoards were really, really bad.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/139100/the_10_worst_pc_keyboards_of_all_time.html

Look at this:

It even gets worse! Click on link above for a visit to the crazy keyboard history.

I couldn't get the site to work. Stays on the intro page, next doesn't work, trying to click the arrows doesn't do anything, etc.

Anyway, my vote is for the Atari 400:

Here is the link again.

Yeah, the Atari was bad. An three was a Tandy colour computer that was horrible.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Neither link WORKS for me, I think MAYBE it only works for those with a subscription to the site?

My vote is for any of those so called ergonomic keyboards, they are terrible.Sorry about the links. When  that kind of thing happens,  one could try a proxy to see if another route works better.

In that list the IBM jr was  listed as the worst ever.
From the article:
PCWorld Worst Keyboards
10. Commodore 64 (1982)
9. Timex Sinclair 2068 (1983)
8. Commodore PET 2001-32-N (1978)
7. Texas Instruments TI-99/4 (1979)
6. Tandy TRS-80 Micro Color Computer MC-10 (1983)
5. Atari 400 (1979)
4. Timex Sinclair 1000 (1982)
3. Mattel Aquarius (1983)
2. Commodore PET 2001 (1977)
1. IBM PCjr (1984)

I had a Sinclair. Gave it away.  Those rubbery, calculator type keyboards in several early computers at 80's were really bad. But I dont understand at all, how Commodore 64 is on the list (10th worst) I strongly DISAGREE!
And I have typed many, many program listings, used wordprocessor and spreadsheet with my C64.

I would say, any relatively new el-cheapo keyboard that has a 'spongy feel' when pressing the key is worse, and what's also annoying, is that nowadays the manufacturers are making the keyboards smaller (people dont have space on their desks anymore?) so the keys are too close to each other.
At work I have a HP keyboard from circa -08, that is clearly 'downsized', and many times after I've once again hit two keys at the same time, at the end of the day I've been very close to yanking that keyboard off, and to bring next day some older, real sized keyboard from home to replace it.

Oh, and yes, those 'ergonomic keyboards', as mentioned before, they are really awful.I disagree with the comments on ergonomic keyboards.  I have a Microsoft Comfort Curve Keyboard 2000 that I've used for several YEARS now and I like it.  But, I guess this keyboard is only slightly ergonomically shaped, compared to other ergonomic keyboards.

Solve : Caller claiming to be Microsoft trying to obtain access to my PC.?

Answer»

My phone caller ID displays 202-547-8574. If you get a call from this number it is a scam.Yes, it's a very old scam. Microsoft never calls you.I kept them on the line 25 minutes 1 nite about a Month ago.....fun.I don't have the patience to keep them on the line that long, there's other things I'd rather be doing than talking on the phone with a worthless scammer. These scammers, in India or the Phillipines usually, have been calling just about everyone in the Western world for the last 7 years at least. This is really well known, but it still gets people, usually elderly or GULLIBLE folk.

Maybe so...but it was 2AM...and i was bored...and i accomplished both my GOALS...he couldn't call anyone else for that time period...And they have never called back...I once had one of these callers, and I let him say the whole "I'm calling from Windows Security and we've found a problem with your computer! There is a test we can do... " and I acted scared and said "Oh fine!" and I asked him a lot of dumb type questions about viruses which he said he could cure. He said "I'll prove you have a virus. Go to the run box and type CMD and hit Enter." I made him tell me how to do that. I typed CND first. Eventually I said, "OK I did that, I got a black box with white writing in it." Up to here took about 15 minutes because I spun it out. He said "Type A-S-S-O-C and hit Enter." I said "Are you going to tell me to look for ZFSendToTarget and then read me the CLSID, and then get my credit card number?". He said "F**k you! You had sex with your FATHER! And your mother! And your sister! And your brother!" and cut the connection.Scam. The only thing that may have some truth to it was that leakage conspiracy back in 2013-2014. Other than that, i think with antiviruses, security suites, firewalls and vpns, you're pretty much safe... provided you don't panic or fall for the bait.Windows called me even tho i use a mac As strange as this might sound, these scammers have also been targeting people on IMVU. I go to IMVU to chat with other adults there and listen in to chat in a virtual space and get my laughs. And on IMVU there is the ability to invite people to private chat sessions. I had an invite and figured I'd check to see what this was all about. To my surprise it was a guy who claimed that he is from Microsoft Support and he noticed that my computer was running slowly.

The scammer thought I was a female and I pretended to be a female and not very computer savy. I said its my boyfriends computer and that its so cool that Microsoft has teamed up with IMVU to give this free help. He then said the help is not free mam. I said oh its not? And he said no. Its $49.95. I said ok... um how do I PAY for this service. he said I need a credit card. I said hmmmm... oh my boyfriend has one in his wallet. He said very good. I said be right back and wasted about 10 minutes of this scammers time. Then I came back and said ok I finally found his wallet. So he said very good. please give me the credit card number, so I started off the number with the first 4 digits of a real credit card so it looked like a legit number and then gave him other numbers and said B instead of 8 and  E instead of 3. He said mam credit cards do not have letters. I was like well Im looking at his card and it has a B and an E in the number. He was like is the B and 8? I was like hmmmm maybe. he then is like what is the E it has to be a number. I then said oh sorry I am dyslexic and its a 3. He said very good. He then asked for the expiration date in which I told him an expired date of like 03/14. He was like mam that card is not good. I was like why? He said that card is expired mam. i was like oh... it is? Hmmm... he said does your boyfriend have another credit card. I said oh.. hmmm looking through his wallet. Then said oh I have one of those prepaid cards that i got for my birthday with $200 on it, could I use one of those? He said yes mam.. I said ok brb I need to go get it. So had him on hold again but not too long that he would leave, I let about 7 minutes pass. I then came back with a prepaid card that I had that was already used up that I got from a newegg rebate. I gave him that number and expiration date and code on the back of the card. He than said ok mam please wait while I process this transaction. he came back about 2 minutes later and said the card doesnt work. I said oh it doesnt. He said it isnt working. I then said OHHHHHHHHH... I forgot I BOUGHT makeup and a new dress with it and some other clothes pretending to be a stereotypical american female to an foreigner. He said mam. I am losing my patience with you. I said why? He said you gave me 2 cards that are no good. How am I to help you if your not paying for this service. I said um... do you take a check. He paused and said yes I can take a check. He said ok I need the account name so I started off with a name like Anita Money ... I thought he was going to pick up on this name right away but he didnt, he had me verify the spelling A N I T A   M O N E Y ... Then he asked for the address and I said 6 6 6 ... then Lucifer Way and he still didnt pick up on this, and then the town and state i said Dallas, New York and still no problems and then zip code 8675309 and he said mam thats too many numbers. I said oh it is then I said your now losing my patience and I then cursed him out and he then said all sorts of nasty stuff back to me about what he is going to do to me as a female which i cant not share here. But like others who have wasted these scam artists time, I also did it to keep them from praying on others and also because I got my kicks out of ruining this scammers day.    Not all females online are females

Solve : Computer Repairs -- Going the way of the TV Repair Guy?

Answer»

Was curious what others felt on this. I have been working on fixing computers since the late 1980s. And from the mid 1990s through up until about 5 years ago, I had been pretty busy fixing computers and making ok money on the side doing so. It seems that ever since the price for new computers dropped below the $500 price tag for new laptop and desktop computers my help with fixing computers has dropped off and instead I am getting inquiries from past clients asking what they should buy next in a list of computers with price tags of $249.99 through $399.99 that they were eyeballing as the replacement to their prior computer.

The Windows XP no longer being supported created a scare that many felt forced to have to buy new computers, and I ended up getting many free computers when people were looking for a means of getting rid of their old computers and they didnt want to have to pay to get rid of their old computers. This WORKED out for me because it gave me free guts to fix other computers with as well as it worked out in that I was able to take 2 of the systems and give them to my wife and DAUGHTER for them to have computers and they were free.

It may be more than just computers being cheaper which has caused a drastic drop off in computer repair needs. Today mobile devices are also more common and there is a market for fixing shattered touch screens on Smart Phones and iPhones but computers I just feel have turned into throw aways. People buy them new and when they have a problem, they just buy another low cost computer or in some cases I have some clients that have done away with their home computer and instead went to a large tablet instead.

I sort of feel like the TV Repair Guy did when TV's became so cheap that when they died, people just bought new TVs. I am glad I didnt invest a lot of money into the computer repair business. I still have many helpful tools, but back 8 years ago business was booming and I almost set up a shop locally for people to bring their computers to to have them serviced. I instead decided that the boom in business may be just a flash in the pan and not to pursue this business, but instead just remain on call as clients need me.

I still get some business, but the business is no longer can you fix my computer, but instead its, can you recover my data and place the data onto my new computer. For the fact that many people feel upset but can live without the gigs of data that they lost and just start over again, and only business owners mainly having a monetary value to their data the money making is only in those businesses that have critical info and the computer dead is holding the data hostage to them, so they pay to recover it. I additionally help my clients that are business owners to protect their data from loss, and so I suppose I shoot myself in the foot for setting up their data to be protected and so the odds of me having to help to get data back for them is far lesser than the first time that they came to me and had all their data on that one computer or server with no backups.

Looking forward with my services that I provide to people, hardware repair and data recovery is my strengths, and programming is a weakness of mine. To stay up with the times and remain diverse in IT, I am almost thinking that I will need to change away from hardware support which is going the way of the TV Repair Guy and that i should crack open a book and strengthen my programming skills and instead of trying to be a jack of all trades and master of none,... that i should stick with one language and try to master it and instead of using older IDE's like Bloodshed Dev C++ and VC 6.0, I should work with newer Visual Studio C++ as for there will be a future in people that require programmers, but computer repair techs are going the way of the dodo. This is dictation. (You might see some funny things.    )
DaveLembke,
Your post got my attention. A few years ago I was in a situation very similar to what you describe. But now I am too old to do much work at all. But during the last two years I did get some extra income by selling some of my stuff on eBay. And I don't mean just computer stuff, I had a number of things I'd collected over the years that I was able to and recover some of my losses.
I also learned that it is possible to buy computers off of eBay and fix them up and make them work. In fact, most of the stuff I have bought off of eBay I was able to get to work and in some cases I was able to resell some of the items I purchased and reworked.
It seems there may still be an opportunity for knocker printer like yourself to take advantage of some of the things that are available through auction sites such as eBay or others.
Yes, I know, there are some swindlers and scams on eBay. But I believe that the refurbished computer business on eBay is very legitimate. Microsoft has certified these dealers to reload their computers with Microsoft operating systems. In some cases the computers came with Windows 7 and it seems that the people that are doing the refurbishing are reloading these systems with the OEM version of Windows 7 that was sold with the machine. Apparently that is perfectly legal. The machine came with an OEM Windows 7 license and after being repaired they reload it with the same OEM operating system. So the not breaking any rules.

Now here's what I think a person could do. Many people want to get a low cost computer that has the features they want and something they can be repaired or maintained for number of years. These refurbished computers that are available on eBay arm most often some type of Dell OptiPlex system. The later models of the optic Plex series were pretty good designs for general business use. They were never intended to be high-performance gaming computers. There are meant to be no-nonsense reliable business machines that could do the kind of work that has to be done in an office or small business. There must of been thousands upon thousands of these machines that were pulled off of leases and put onto the used computer market by either Dell or whoever was doing the leasing.
Here's what I think a person could do. By a few of these refurbished Dell computers that might have something a little bit lacking. The usually lack a keyboard and a mouse and no monitor. And in some cases they have a very small hard drive or not enough memory. Most of these come with  a dual core processor running about 2 GHz. So they are capable of doing fairly impressive things other than real fast gaining. Most of these can be upgraded to dedicated graphics and they would be more appealing to some individuals that one a better computer for playing games.
The price is right on these refurbished Dell computers. With the operating system installed and in working condition these sell for under $100 and come with a guarantee or warranty. For little bit less money you can get one that doesn't have a hard drive in it but still has the certificate of authenticity that would allow you to install the OEM version of Windows 7 on a new hard drive.
So there is a possibility of working with some people in your community that are looking for a good computer but would like to get it from somebody that will offer local support and six something in the goes wrong. Some of these people have already had bad experiences with store-bought computers and they end up with a box that doesn't work but they still have the monitor, keyboard and mouse. So these individuals might be willing to buy our reconditioned computer from you on the understanding that if something goes wrong with it your there to help them out and fix it.

Many users become frustrated when they find that the salesman at a local Best Buy or Walmart cannot explain to them how something works nor can they give them the assurance that the warranty will really help them out is something goes wrong. I still think there are many people that want some responsible individual in their community that they can rely on for their computer maintenance.
So that's my idea, I would do that myself except that I am getting so old and my recent sources are very, very slim. I just want to say that I have bought about three or four reconditioned Dell computers and I was satisfied that they all were in usable condition and I was able to derive some benefit from them. Unfortunately, I had a nice Dell desktop here that I was going to try to upgrade myself and I made some kind of a mistake and I must've damage the motherboard. So I'm going to quit trying to do this myself.
Now if you still have your skills and you don't make the stained stupid mistakes that I do, you could probably pick up a few of these refurbished computers or even one that is not completely working right, and resell it to some local customers and make a small but significant gain on the transaction. No, you not only get rich. But it would be one way to supplement your income if you are a senior citizen. Just a thought that I wanted to share with you.

And by the way, the computer that I'm actually using right now is one of these ultra small desktops made by Dell. It is a model 745, but it's the real tiny small form factor that has no way to expand it with PCI cards. I would stay away from these unless you are sure that your customers never want to expand or improve the computer experience. No expansion slots.
However, the medium-size Dell computer case is perfectly fine. It requires half height cards, but there's no problem finding half I cards nowadays. Typically the medium-size case has at least one slot that suitable for a dedicated graphics card plus the other PCI slots for the more ordinary things.

Years ago I studied real hard to become a TV repair technician. I worked at that for a while and I would study at home to learn computer programming. Months later I did travel back to California and got a job in Silicon Valley during those years when the personal computer industry was booming in that area. So I was able to use my background in electronic technology to get a decent job there in the Valley during the time when there was a lot of interest in personal computing and manufacturing stuff for use in personal computers.
Of course, nowadays most of the actual manufacturing is done elsewhere and the Silicon Valley nowadays is mostly a place for start up companies and for firms that are doing deep research into new ideas. Anyway, I am too old for any of that now.
Just thought I would share some of these ideas with you.

End of dictation.
Thanx to Win 10 i'm actually up from this point last 2 years...I used to be a TV repair man in the 1970s and early 80s. It started when I was about 14, being interested in electronics, I used to be given stuff that people didn't want, radios, record players, TVs, etc. Mostly vacuum tubes then, even in the earlier 80s a lot of colour TVs that were in use by customers had them. I went from fixing stuff at home for people, mainly for beer money, to working in a repair workshop for a company that rented out TVs. It was a culture shock. No more studying the circuit diagram and trying to work out the fault scientifically. There wasn't time for that. The firm had a range of 5 or 6 sets out on rental, and they were all by the same manufacturer. You would get a set in with reduced picture height, and old Jack would say "change V14, and if that doesn't fix it, change R251, it's gone high". You had lists of stock faults, and really, a monkey could have done the job, as long as it could use a soldering iron. A lot of problems were really due to reliability issues.    Yeah I remember TV Repair Techs on call and some shops here and there that serviced TV's and Vacuum cleaners etc in Northern New Jersey where I grew up 15 minutes from NYC. In the 1970s and early 1980s they thrived. I remember going into them to get vacuum cleaner belts for my mom when she would get something snagged in the auger and burn up the belt. This one guy in view behind counter had a TV open and while smoking a cigar off and on be soldering something with one of those old black sears craftsman soldering iron guns that had the light that came on with 1/2 trigger and loop of metal that heated at the tip when full trigger pulled. By about 1989 most of them went out of business.

Next door neighbor was a TV repair man since the 1950s and I use to invite myself as little kids do into his garage when he was working in it to see what he was up to and he had old tube TV's and Radios that he worked on. The glow of the tubes and him working on it to me was mesmerizing. It felt like I had a mad scientist working in his shop right next door to my home and Mr Delner was really cool that he wasnt mean and telling me to go back home, he let me stick around and watch what he was doing even though I had absolutely no clue what he was doing but it was entertaining since I wanted to know how it worked and how he knew what was what. When he passed away in 1983. His wife was in her late 70s and the stuff in the garage was no longer touched. It was his clutter that no one else in the family knew what to do with. I use to sneak into their garage that was offset along side my property which had a side door that wasnt locked and go in there quietly and snoop around and check out what stuff he had in there. He had all sorts of books and manuals and tubes and large metal block capacitors and resistors and all. I was about 10 years old and "borrowed" stuff from their garage without asking. I figured that well he is dead and no one else is using this stuff and he probably would be ok with me messing with his stuff since he is gone and cant use it anymore. That was my mindset at age 10. Of what I "borrowed" from his garage, I couldnt make any of the circuits do much other than I learned that the tubes with a 6 in their part number would glow with a 6 volt lantern battery. I would trial and error testing what pins on the tube were the power pins, and when i found the power pins for the element inside it would glow orange.

I brought this to school for show and tell and the teacher and classmates were like WOW COOOL, what does it do... and I said it only does as you see, it glows orange. Then they were like ohhhh... Thats boring then.  Teachers though knowing my interest in electronics would bring in broken things for me to see if I can fix them. Most stuff I couldnt but a few things I was able to fix. I fixed a TOASTER and an electric pencil sharpener. The toaster had a break in the element that glowed orange. I fixed that by fixing the mechanical switch inside that wasnt making contact when lever pushed down, and the electric pencil sharpener was somehow a pencil point made its way into the motor and gearbox section and was pinched between the motor sprocket and the sharpener sprocket mechanically binding it. I just needed to turn the sprocket like counter clockwise to free the piece of graphite and then the sprocket teeth meshed without binding. The teachers were very thankful for this and so both teachers were cool and extended my help into everyone benefitting such as thanks to Dave fixing the pencil sharpener I will bring in cookies for everyone tomorrow etc. Only draw back to this was that each time a teacher brought in something to be fixed I now had people saying Fix it so we can get the treat reward. There was a TV brought in in 5th grade and this teacher heard about me from prior grade teachers and she opened her mouth and said well if Dave fixes this TV then I promise to the class that we will watch the next New York Mets game that is on during the day on it. I looked at the teacher like... GREATTTT. Thank You for putting me on the spot here. Fixing a TV is a bit more challenging than a Toaster and electric pencil sharpener. Well kids in class were like can you fix it, and I opened it up and the circuit board was smoked around the high voltage for the electron gun and the picture with brightness control all the way up in a dark room you could barely see a picture and it didnt fit to the entire picture tube. I said this cant be fixed by me. It needs a new circuit board and I knew at that time that the boards were model specific. One thing I was tempted to do, but realized that its just crazy nonsense was that I was going to take my 13" TV and move my working TV guts to her 13" TV's case and make it look like I fixed it. It would have been my TV BASICALLY in the case of her TV so to her and everyone else it would look like I fixed it. But I didnt want to give away my TV set and have to rewire to the switches of the other TV to make it look legit. So I let the class down. We didnt get to watch the Mets and some classmates were angry with me. I really wish the teacher didnt put me on the spot like that. It would have been one thing to offer whatever reward after its fixed, but not a reward offered before fixing that would turn the class ugly on me when it wasnt able to be fixed.

Thinking back now, Im lucky that none of the capacitors hit me with a shock as for the old capacitors could hold a charge for a while. My dad saw a pile of parts I had in my room the one day and warned me that I could get a bad shock from them and to run a screw driver across them to made sure they are drained first before handling them. Sometimes one would spark from a stored charge. My dad just said dont kill yourself and I was free to do whatever as long as I didnt burn the house down doing whatever it was. I had lots of mishaps but never burned the house down. I would buy parts at radio shack to build circuits from books and kits and once I bought a package of small NEON bulbs for like 59 cents and held it and spread the legs out to go into an outlet and it exploded in my fingers and scared the **** out of me. I then learned how important that resistor in series with the Neon Bulb was on a 120VAC circuit. Adding resistor the Neon worked as it should when I was about 11 years old. Played with making stuff like wire wrapped around coat hangers to make an electromagnet, but it didnt work as intended because I failed to notice that the power supply that was 14 volts and 5 amps was AC and not DC. This instead caused a lot of RF Noise and upset my mother trying to watch TV downstairs because we didnt have cable TV we just had the VHF and UHF channels. Additionally my use of a DC motor and wire run through a coil made for RF Noise as well which also upset my mom trying to watch afternoon soaps.

Long story short... I bought kits and read lots of books and figured out ohms law etc and self taught myself analog electronics, and later in college learned digital electronics getting half a degree in microcomputer digital electronics.

Getting into Electronics out of High School I was very lucky in 1994 that a double date, the girls were friends and me and the guy named Earl didnt know each other and so I said so what do you do for work and he said he worked with electronics. i said ohhhh really? And next thing we knew we were talking more than the girls and drawing circuits on the napkins. I was then offered a job starting that Monday, went in and hired immediately. Was there until paychecks started to bounce and learned that when a paycheck bounces that banks dont go after your employer who is in the wrong for writing bad checks but that the bank wants you the stiffed employee to pay the bank back.  Left there to work at a bowling alley for a short stint to make ends meet as an assistant manager and then landed a job with Rockwell Automation in 1995 as an assembler. And in 1996 I was working on my home project at work and an engineer working on a prototype asked me what i was doing. I explained to him the circuit and he said why arent you an ET. I said well they only had assembly positions. He talked to my boss and I was moved up to production tester and light troubleshooting which was entry level ET. I then went over to help this woman named Carol with electronics in the service department wandering there on my own, and my boss saw me helping her and I fixed a problem with use of oscilloscope and prints and I had no clue he was looking over the wall of the cubicle. I was kind of startled when I heard my name called out where the hairs on my back stood on end for a second because I was where i wasnt really suppose to be. I was praised for helping which is cool and I was then awarded an ET position in service department fixing automation controls for Rockwell Automation / Allen -Bradley company in Lebanon, NH. This lasted until 2001 when they were downsizing and following 9/11 they chose to close down our plant completely and move the assembly and service to mexico and move engineering to other plants. Electronics was drying up. All of it was going outside the USA by just about all companies that were making electronic devices. In 2000 I was forced to leave electronics degree because local college did away with it saying there is no demand for it and there is more jobs in nursing, so how would you like to be a nurse. I said I like fixing electronics but not people. So I left that college and switched to a computer science degree MIS/IT which i took from 2000 to 2004 and completed that degree. In 2003 I was lucky to land a job in MIS/IT with a small local food store chain and did that for 6 years until economy tanked and sales dropped and they were forcing people out of the company by pressure tactics which they gave me threatening that I cost them too much and I would have to get a $5 an hour pay cut from $18 an hour to $13 an hour or firing people. I chose to leave on my own. And then got a great job with the USPS as an ET working with electronics and computers and automation. So I have strengths all around here that benefit me and the USPS.

While my job with the USPS is a great job. I have learned from my grandfather that its good to be good at a number of things instead of master of one thing and unable to do much of anything else, so because of that i try to take in and master everything i get to mess with, but with computers, mainly programming and taking on all languages that I can get exposed to, its made me a jack of all languages but a master of none.  So that is i can look at code and know what it is for the most part, but anyone looking at code I make might be like ... why are you doing it this way when there is a better way or point out other oddities in my code where its clearly not of professional coder quality and shows the gaps in skills with that language etc.

Getting back to Geeks idea of selling refurbs. My youngest brother was doing that for a few years buying up core i3 and i5 laptops and fixing them up and selling them, but even he has seen a decline in the need for a refurb computer to buy. He was making like $50 on each laptop and they were good solid laptops of the business class of laptops where they are good work horse computers meant to last vs cheap laptops of lesser quality. he too has said that he has seen his clients going for these low cost new computers instead of a refurb and with the Core i3's brand new in the $300 range its killed off his refurb sales and so he stopped buying them to fix and flip them because he now has 3 laptops that he cant sell at a profit and will have to sell at a loss after putting more RAM in them or new keyboard etc.

As far as buying and fixing for a profit there is some risk there, you could buy a brick of a computer and have to eat the cost or try to find a twin to it to mix and match guts to make a good computer to sell and maybe make a small profit.

Years ago I use to buy classic legacy mini battery operated hand held games up cheap that were dead. For example mini arcade Donkey Kong Jr. which ran on 4 x C batteries and lit up with colors on a VFD display and had button and joystick controls. I was at one point able to pick these up dead for under $20 and fix them cheaply and when fixed sell them for $75 or more. But then the supply of dead ones cheaply dried up. I only bought them if the VFD displays werent shattered. 99% of the time it was a problem with the controls or the batteries were left in the battery compartment and the acid ate away the wires or made for a poor connection. The boards with VFD attached to them were very reliable. I only had one Galaxian mini arcade that has scrambled brains and its the ROM chip corrupt somehow. Game starts and the score freaks out and collision detection is messed up. So it became a parts donor for another.

There is definitely money to be made on ebay if you find the right stuff to fix and flip. But there isnt a steady flow of it. Opportunities come and go and you either get in on it and make some money or no longer can go it because supply chain of stuff to fix dries up or you get too aggressive into it and dont realize that the door to opportunity shut and now, your going to take a loss on the products that were fixed that the demand dried up on.

The electrolytic capacitors in electronic flash guns that photographers use can be very nasty. I burned half the tip off a screwdriver discharging one. Noise like a pistol shot. Used a probe with a resistor after that.  Also the CRT holds a charge - the glass of the tube has an interior and an exterior coating which together form the two plates of a capacitor which helps smooth the 25,000 volts EHT. My probe was a wooden stick and taped to one end was about an inch of thick stiff copper wire soldered via a 1 megohm resistor to a flexible insulated lead with a croc clip on the end. I would attach the croc clip to the chassis and then whip off the EHT connector cap and prod the copper tip into the socket on the CRT. I once got 300 V DC on the back of my hand because I brushed a live connection on a vertical PCB as I was adjusting a potentiometer deep in a working set. Too lazy to unhinge the chassis, done it plenty of times before, etc. The point I contacted was where a bad quality repair had been made (two resistors in series to replace one, with the solder at the join drawn to a sharp point). I whipped my hand out quick, and the sharp (live!) point cut a furrow in my hand as it went by. The mark is still there 30+ years later. HURT like *censored*. The worst thing was the "live chassis" design that most TVs adopted to save on the weight and cost of transformers. One side of the house AC went to the metal chassis, which was the negative of the HT supply, and the other side went to a half wave rectifier or later some kind of thyristor setup. All the tube heaters were in series. This were fine and you had a neutral chassis if the plug was wired right (UK plugs are polarized) but later sets in the 80s used bridge rectifier schemes so that the chassis was always at half mains voltage whichever way around the plug was wired. Full voltage here is 240 V!. Best practice in a workshop was to feed the set through a 1:1 isolating transformer. Sometimes at the first try bringing the voltage up slowly with a variac to see what gives. I follow a Vintage TV forum where people discuss restoring old British TVs and other stuff.

Great stories.... Thanks for sharing the stories salmon.

Also going to check out that link you shared. I had an old tube Norelco shortwave radio set until my wife deemed it a junky old radio and tossed it out on me without me knowing until i went to go use it and it was GONE .

I use to fix some tube radios and I fixed an old RCA for a guy and was talking about short wave radio with him and he said he didnt need two short wave radios and so he gave me the Norelco for free and it worked perfect after a few seconds for the tubes to warm up. Many fun nights slowly adjusting the band to see what far stretches across the earth I could listen to if the ionosphere was just right and it bounce and fade in and out. These days i just have a battery operated Radio Shack brand AM/FM/Weather/Shortwave. But I still miss that old baby blue and white plastic body with metal chassis tube set. I'd love to get another like it but havent located the model number yet for it and it might cost me a mint to get an exact model of it. What caught my attention with it was Norelco which makes shavers. I never knew they made radios way back.

Here is a similar radio to the one I had, but mine was a Norelco and in the back it said made in Holland. This is a different brand but very similar style here: http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/rincan_unknown_all_wave_super_het_2_hifi_speaker.html

Solve : Create an Anonymous Email Account??

Already I have several Emil accounts. But they soon get full of junk I do not need.
Now the USA government says companies can share e-mail data.

So now I want an account that has very little ion about who I and and what I like.

First,  I am not GOING g to give my real birthday.
Nor will I my real name, but an alias I remember. My friends won't care.
Now comes the hard part. No phone number. No way.I refuse.

Not long ago, the sharing economy seemed to take over. Privacy was dead, and no one cared. But that was a pre-Snowden era. Now, for some, the need to go truly anonymous is more important than ever.

Have you done this?  Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 31, 2017, 06:35:08 PM

Many Yankees are now in hiding.
Congress did no such thing...why don't you do some research ? ?...instead of believing/posting everything you read ? ?Congress reviewed an FCC rule which was set to come into effect later this year. This rule, which has never been in effect, would require additional consumer protections from ISPs in regards to Subscriber data.

Section 706 of the telecommunications Act already requires consumer protections of that data and privacy thereof.

As is, U.S ISPs still cannot track or sell your E-mail, search history, or even anything beyond the domain names you lookup. Doing so would violate U.S wiretapping law (18 U.S. Code § 2511).

Thank you for the correction, BC.
I did  a little research,  there has been laws already in place laws limiting the information Telecoms can share with others. (As you stated.) Some laws date back to 1998 and earlier.

A question. Why di the Washington Post make such a big deal about there scent thing?

That rag said; "Congress’s vote to eviscerate** Internet privacy could give the FBI massive power.."

Washington Post - March 30.

** I do not know what that means.   ISP's cannot do anything the Media is stating legally...it's all political party nonsense...

I didnt know what this word was myself until I was Playing WORLD of Warcraft as a Rogue around 2006 ... decided to look it up after seeing the deadly moves my rogue would unleash on the monster or PvP other player and damage numbers.

World of Warcraft also exposed me to all sorts of mineral names I had never heard of before like Moss Agate and Malachite when I was in Engineering profession as well as Thorium etc which I seen the periodic table so many times and never knew it was in it until looking back and looking for it specifically in which there it was [ 90 TH Thorium 232.03806 ]

And some people said years ago to me that Video Games will rot your brain...       I've actually learned a lot playing video games including history and names such as Wolfenstein Enemy Territory Platinum Edition which while it has the fake STORY lines, they actually used real Nazi names in it for Nazi's that were a part of World War 2 that I had otherwise never knew before, so I then google searched to read up on what was real from what was game story line etc. Quote from: DaveLembke on April 02, 2017, 12:57:45 PM

It is mostly used in its figurative sense these days, that it to take the insides or important parts out of something leaving only the shell or skin or exterior, as politicians do to something they wish to kill off but can't be seen to actually do that.

This should actually be the new definition in Webster's if you ask me...

Solve : Enter unicode in Windows Word.?

Answer»

Some codes you can enter by using the ALT key and typing three digists on the number  keypad.
However, Unicode goes beyond.
Here is a good link I found:
Three ways to enter Unicode characters in Windows
Quote

Alt – x

In MICROSOFT Word you can insert Unicode characters by typing the hex value of the character then typing Alt-x. You can also see the Unicode value of a character by placing the cursor immediately after the character and pressing Alt-x. This also works in applications that use the Windows rich edit control such as WordPad and Outlook.

Still find it interesting that Notepad by DEFAULT doesnt save in unicode, I have to specify to TELL it to save copy/pasted content as unicode or it complains. Never tried it with MS Word yet to see if it doesnt CARE or not. The last version of MS Word I had was 2003, and since then I moved on to Open Office and then Libre Office because it is FREE and does everything i need.I think WordPad will let you do Unicode.
