No scan ever run but yet they state you have 2 threats..

Its definitely SPAM, and using pressure/scare tactics to get people to buy into their product. I would also weigh in on stating that its also a SCAM, because even if they have a product that might clean up SOMETHING, the 2 threats are a lie, its about as bad as a car dealership using sales pitches to get you to buy into whatever they are trying to sell you that is not factual, but if they can sell you on that it is then they got you.

I see junk e-mail like this all the time. I also use Thunderbird. You can teach it what is junk from what is not. I have been teaching mine for about 3 years now and its pretty GOOD at sorting good from bad. Sometimes good stuff still gets placed as bad and some new problems show up due to evolved subject lines etc that get around the prior rules I set. But I flag it as junk and it knows if others match to that structure of words again or similar to place into the junk folder. I also set up my rash cleanup to dump my trash bin when closing out. *This can be dangerous if something important finds its way to the trash bin of Thunderbird, but I have yet to have this become a problem, so it empties the trash bins to the e-mail accounts that are configured in it.

I think the only problem i have since using Thunderbird is that I actually forgot my passwords for some of my e-mail accounts because it has them stored. Luckily I can drop a backup of the Thunderbird files/folders to a computer after clean install of Thunderbird and able to then have it ready to roll. However now that I think of it, I would perform a new backup as for Thunderbird likely updated itself between now and last time that I made a complete copy of it, and mixing new install of Thunderbird with old Thunderbird guts could break Thunderbird or just not work someday.

Other issue other than forgetting passwords is that I used alias name and address and so I could lose access to some of these e-mail accounts someday if I am forced to change password with Yahoo for example and dont know the old password, dont know my alias, and dont know my security questions.    Its a TICKING time bomb to someday no longer having access to these e-mail accounts.    However I can still OPEN Thunderbird and see offline e-mail, and who i am in contact with that need to remain in contact with and notify them of a new e-mail account and that the old one is no longer active.

Take the new all-black Chromecast Ultra streaming dongle. Specs-wise, it has exactly the improvements you’d think it would: It now supports 4K content in both Dolby Vision and HDR10 formats. It’s designed to stream Ultra HD content from Netflix, Vudu, YouTube, and the new tack-sharp COFFERS of Google Play Movies, which will start bulking up its 4K offerings in November.
I am sure I don't NEED it.  I never believe Wired after its articles that were made up for the sake of people's attention. Or it could be pr or just sponsored news. Is there any Chromecast gadget review here? I just need to have at least one from the forum. Had to ask for college homework help on Programming. Many forum users have Chromecast.  Most say its alright. Some prefer Roku.

Solve : eMachine - Never Obsolete Sticker - eMONSTER?

Answer»

Was watching YOUTUBE video and this sticker caught my attention, so I went on the hunt for the WEBPAGE that they referenced this from and found this.

eMachines - "This computer is NEVER OBSOLETE"

In FINE print though you need to pay a fee to keep the non obsolescence from happening.  $19.99 per month to be part of the network program and $99 every 2 years is how they worked this one.

https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/728660-the-emachines-emonster-500a-restoration-and-modernization/

Never knew that this eMonster existed. I wonder how it worked out for the people upgrading every 2 years if they were in fact given the worlds best gaming system every 2 years. And who determined what was the worlds best?

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]They preyed on the 89% of the buyers that never followed thru....I think that might be one that actually got upgraded? The original was from 1999 was based around an original (P2 Era) 500Mhz Celeron, so perhaps this is the "upgrade" from 2001?

Solve : Never insert a RAM stick without being able to see what your doing?

Answer»

So for years I have installed RAM into computers... No serious mishaps, key notch always saves from wrong insertion etc. What could go wrong with inserting a RAM stick into a computer with its side cover off that is facing the WALL and to lazy to completely unplug all cables other than power cord unplugged so that no power anywhere on motherboard when inserting RAM stick blindly.

Well I felt for the ejection wings and knew the orientation of the key notch and so many times before I felt for that END slot to the RAM socket as a guide down to the socket and then feel the ejection wings then want to close in to lock the RAM stick into the RAM bank socket.

So I thought I found this guide and the RAM stick slid down and then I felt resistance, so I pressed without seeing what i was doing and working on feel only. First indicator that something was wrong was RAM stick all the way down and level with other stick, but the ejection wings didnt close in on the sides of the RAM stick. So I carefully remove the 2GB DDR2 800Mhz RAM stick and it ejects easily falling into my hand.

What in the world connected with this RAM stick to feel like it was in the slot?

Well the space between RAM slot sockets is the perfect distance to wedge a RAM stick into.

On top of that I heard something small fall and land on the bottom of the computer case. Yup you probably guessed right... the tall surface mount capacitors I sheered those right off as I was pressing the RAM stick in between RAM slots vs in the actual slot. Grrrrrrrr

Below is a picture of a Good 2GB Stick of RAM with capacitors on it where they belong... and then there is below that the sheered off capacitors circled in orange.

Well it looks like my wifes Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4Ghz system that was going to be upgraded from 4GB to 8GB of DDR2 800Mhz for free, is going to be instead upgraded to 3 sticks now for 6GB of DDR2 800Mhz and single channel vs dual-channel. * I pulled the RAM which is good from a DOA system that had 4GB RAM in it, and it would have made a sweet free upgrade to 8GB, but I had a major mishap.

I have to say thats the last time I blindly reach in and feel for slots and install RAM. I have done that so many times in the past, especially back in the day of IDE cable and power to motherboard cables in the way draped over the RAM slots.

So word of warning.... Dont be like me and destroy RAM or even possibly motherboard installing RAM without an actual view of what your doing and surprise surprise a RAM stick can be wedged between the plastic RAM slot connection. In the picture below I also added a picture from one of my bench boards to show the spacing between RAM slot memory banks is just about exact to the actual correct connection that if you feel for this blindly your going to destroy something thinking the RAM stick is in the slot and its pinched between the RAM Bank socket bodies.

So well designed to allow for a RAM stick to fit snug between this space and sheer off tall surface mount components in the process!

[ATTACHMENT deleted by ADMIN to conserve space]Here is how the RAM stick can fit perfect right between both RAM Slots...

Hey a 2 RAM Slot Bank Motherboard can Hold THREE STICKS!!!!

    DONT TRY THIS AT HOME

Notice how those Tall Surface Mount Capacitors are so ready to get sheered off if this stick is pressed down!

And it doesnt take much pressure to sheer off small lead solder joints......

* I might desolder one of these larger and smaller caps and see what values they are and solder on new ones to save this 2GB stick from recycle.

Solve : Save Windows apps to SD with phone???

Answer»

Anyone know if I can SAVE an xp pro or any Windows app to my SD card using my phone. EVERY time I try it, it says it's not compatible. I was hoping that I didn't have to root my phone because every time I do that it seems I end up with another problem. Pleeeeeeez any help would be rad. Thanx I deleted your duplicate post. Please don't ask the same question more than once.
If your phone is Android then its not x86 compatible and so it wont run the Windows App. If there is an app that allows a x86 Windows environment within Android then you might be able to MAKE the windows app into a portable app and run it through an x86 emulator.

Might be able to do it through this:

www.cameyo.com/Okay I understand possibly running with you and any later if I was trying to run the program on my phone but I'm actually just trying to save app to my SD card so that I can remove my SD card from my phone then put it in my computer to install whatever it is I'm trying to install onto my PC because I'm having TROUBLE getting on the internet with my PCOh ok, so download through phone a program and save it to SD and then insert SD into PC and install off of SD ... "a sneaker network" as they call it.  Ive never tried to download a MSI or EXE to my phone before, and website rules may actually block you from ever seeing link to the EXE or MSI if they have OS/Browser detection and then it passes a webpage formatted for android for example to show up as only able to download whatever it is for android.

Do you have access to another computer that isnt an android. Download it using that computer to a USB thumb drive, and then avoid the route of using your phone or is the phone the only option you have?

Are you able to navigate using phone to even start the download process or can you never get there thru the phone because of OS/Browser detection in which the web server of the website is detecting android and hiding ability to download for Windows a ZIP, EXE, or MSI?

Solve : AOL sign in box position on screen changed?

Answer»

A couple of days ago, for no apparent reason, the sign-in box for my AOL email changed position on screen - NORMALLY in the top right quarter, it is now somewhat below the bottom of the screen (only about a third of the box showing) - I can scroll up to GET whole form - just, so it's not serious - just irritating.  The scroll bar on the right MOVES correctly. I can't figure out how to correct and any suggestion will be appreciated.  I have Vista and Firefox browser.Here I have Windows 7 and Firefox and it is on the left side the third item down.  It is very hard to control, it will dance around with the mouse. But it dos work.
Thanks for response, Geek - I have just booted up after a DAY's non use and, again for no reason, things are back to normal with the sign in screen.  It beats me why these odd blips occur - perhaps it was the rest that put things right.

Solve : Privacy today, gone tomorrow. Thanks senators!:(?

Answer»

Guys its official.  Our privacy rights have been spat on. The house has voted for the bill that allows ISP to sell our data to marketers and do whatever they want with it. Any suggestions for measures that can help protect my privacy against this ridiculous bill.

https://www.itbnews.info/2017/03/house-of-representatives-strikes-down-internet-privacy-rules/

You can find more information on self-protection here.Nothing has changed, as far as I can tell. In late 2016, The FCC enacted a new set of rules late last year that would override exemptions in 18 U.S. Code § 2511 and prevent U.S ISPs from gathering or selling data they would have otherwise been legally ABLE to gather and sell. These privacy rules were set to come into effect later this year (2017).

SJ Res 34 was a congressional review of that rule. The result if which is that the FCC rule that was proposed late last year- that is, 2016 - will never go into effect.

Part of that US Code effectively exempts from wiretap law packets and data addressed to you- that is, it's not a violation of wiretap laws if you record and gather data that is directly addressed to your server. The new Rule was set to effectively prevent ISPS from using that exemption going forward to gather or sell any information.

The exemption only really covers DNS lookups. Intercepting and recording actual web traffic is still illegal under the wiretap laws, and for the most part always has been. (Not that it matters quite so much with the push for https everywhere)

Well done BC...

I don't entertain politics here but people need to do more research...instead of freakin out on an obvious media red herring...

I was curious when this started to hit the news a while ago and looked into it. It is somewhat concerning how the entire thing has been misrepresented by pretty much every article I can find, including those LINKED here; it rather neatly highlights Media sensationalism and in an incredible irony, illustrated how many different entities and organizations will willfully misrepresent information to support their own interests. There are websites claiming that this allows ISPs to track your web activity, or saying that this is the creation of a new law which allows such. I've seen posts on other forums calling for Americans to use Tor and other encrypted technologies to "prevent your ISPs from tracking your browsing"; All of which is completely ridiculous in the face of what has actually changed, which is absolutely nothing.

Which is not to suggest that the Privacy Rule the FCC wanted implemented would have been a bad idea or that one should not question why that rule ended up rejected in review. Now, I'm no legal expert but personally I think the rule was overridden in review largely because it was an FCC Rule set to override established U.S Wiretapping Laws. It is my understanding that changing a Law requires a bill to amend those laws- that is, FCC Rules themselves cannot overreach U.S Law, and skip representative review. That seems like a sensible reason to override it, considering even if it had passed ISPs could likely have simply CHALLENGED the ruling on that basis and gotten it thrown out anyway. This certainly hasn't stopped the articles flowing in attaching dollar figures to "paid off" senators, however.Guys it's official. Trump has signed this ridiculous bill

Solve : Neat way of knowing where PING as a timer is in its time delay with color?

Answer»

Sharing a neat way to know how close a PING time delay is to triggering event by Color.

I use one of my computers for browser based games and the part of the games where they expect people to sit at their computer and wait for:

5 minutes
15 minutes
1 hour
4 hours
8 hours
24 hours
or
48 hours

For a process (timer) to complete before you can gather whatever it is that you are farming/making etc is more boring than watching paint dry. So I have created keyboard/mouse macros and added them to simple batch files to run in time delay loops.

Prior to last night, I had to quickly close the batch execution of a PING to 127.0.0.1 as a time delay before triggering a EXE to run the keyboard/mouse macro, when wanting to use the computer for other than the automated process, and  sometimes right as I go to close it it triggers the EXE because I wasnt aware that it was about to trigger before using keyboard and mouse, and then when the macro starts I have to wait for the macro to do its thing as for keyboard and mouse are no longer in control until it ends.

I was thinking there has to be a way to know how close to triggering the PING time delay is in my batch, then had the idea of changing background color at 3 intervals. One color GREEN to be for the longer time delay, then YELLOW for the time delay that is shorter duration but I know I have time if I want to do something quick with computer without the macro triggering when I am using the system, and RED for warning that there is very little time left in the time delay sequence before the batch triggers the Macro and then loops back to beginning back to first time delay.

So I have the following

Code: [Select]:loop
color 3f
ping 127.0.0.1 -n 520
color e0
ping 127.0.0.1 -n 300
color 4f
ping 127.0.0.1 -n 120
trigger.exe
goto loop
This gives me a little beyond 15 minutes of time delay before triggering a macro that gathers a virtual product and then starts the new creation of virtual product. So that I can just play the fun part of the game strategy and combat and all that and not have to deal with the material creation and gathering grind, and now I can look at the window and know how close to triggering the batch is to triggering the macro.

Figured I'd share this in case others even needed a creative way of knowing how close a time delay by use of PING was before triggering by use of the color xx instruction before each time delay of tiered delays that make up a whole delay.

Its nice being able to do other stuff that is more important and have the game played automated while at work, sleeping, or doing basically anything else other then the boring farming process. I use my electron sipper computer that runs on about 40 watts of power to do this too and this way electric bill is small for a computer that runs 24 hours a day to perform mostly automated redundant processes.  I find that when I need these sorts of things I'll usually write a C# program for the task. I also use it to resolve Annoyances i have with Windows, such as how they made the network foldout rather silly in Windows 10.

That said, for stuff like this I usually just write a program for the learning experience and because it gives me a problem to program a solution to, rather than because I really need that solution. (in that case it's ping all the way).

With that in mind I thought I'd tackle your "problem" in that way. A fairly short thrown-together program that you give a timeout like 00:00:20 for 20 seconds, and it reports every 10th of the way through. Though in the interest of making things interesting I'll write it in Visual Basic .NET. It can change colors but with 10 offset reports I don't know how useful colour coding could be, so I left that out:

Code: [Select]Module ConWaiter

    Sub Main(Arguments As String())
        'ConWaiter program waits a specified amount of time.
        'it displays messages showing progress at certain times as well.
        'arguments: ConWaiter <time>
        If Arguments.Length>0 Then

            Dim TimeWait As TimeSpan
            TimeSpan.TryParse(Arguments(0),TimeWait)
            Dim ReportOffsets As New Queue(Of TimeSpan)
            ' report every 10th increment.
            'obviously this will be really odd and strange for rather small increments. Nevermind that.
            'Dim Offset As Double

            For Offset As Double = 0.10# to 0.9# Step 0.1#
                ReportOffsets.Enqueue(new TimeSpan(TimeWait.Ticks*Offset))
            Next

            Dim sw As New Stopwatch
            sw.Start()
            Console.WriteLine("Waiting for " + TimeWait.ToString())
            Do while sw.Elapsed < TimeWait

                If ReportOffsets.Any() Then
                    'check for an offset.
                    Dim nextOffset = ReportOffsets.Peek()
                    If sw.Elapsed > nextOffset Then
                        Console.WriteLine((TimeWait-sw.Elapsed).ToString() + " Remaining.")
                        ReportOffsets.Dequeue()
                    End If
                End If

            Loop
            Console.WriteLine(TimeWait.ToString() + " Has elapsed.")
        Else
            Console.WriteLine("Time to wait not specified.")
        End If

    End Sub

End Module

Ideally it would be a GUI program, tbh- maybe showing the "Time to Execute" all the time for example, like a countdown.Just got back and saw what you posted here. Thanks for taking the time to code this up. Going to check it out when I get home from work tonight.

I was thinking about a timer that would display a count down to give BETTER representation of actual time left etc. The batch method with the color command was a down and dirty approach just to have some sort of indication as to if its safe to start using the keyboard/mouse and know its green so I have plenty of time to check on something or its yellow so I have greater than 2 minutes to check on email etc, or red in which I should leave it be for up to 2 minutes and let it perform its automated instruction.

Quick look at your code .. it looks like your not triggering an EXE from within the timer or maybe im blind  ... so calling to an EXE to run from within your code... would then go with a "system call"? or would you go with this countdown program in batch loop so when count down is up it simply ends the count down program and the next line is to run the macro EXE and when the macro ends its sent back via GOTO into a batch loop to start the count down timer again and repeat until the batch is terminated?, or is there a better method than nesting this into a batch loop (or) system call within the code to run the macro EXE before starting the count down timer again all within the program itself and no batch and no system calls?

I have always used "system calls" in languages i work with within my code to trigger to run other programs, so curious how this might be done without a system call if there is a way. Or if Its one of the 2 other methods in which its a system call within the count down timer or the count down timer is only a count down timer and placed within a batch script loop you can have it loop back to timer, macro, loop back to timer and so on....  The idea would be to use it in a batch file as a way of showing a indicator of the time lefty at intervals, then it returns and the batch file would execute the program and start over.Cool thanks for clarifying  and your help with this.  Got bored ... down with the flu and decided to make a count down from scratch with color in C++.

One annoyance was that the timer would get below 10 seconds and show 9,8,7 ... vs 09, 08, 07 and so I put in a conditional output to add the leading 0

Initially I did this with a char zero; and then IF, Then logic to have <
Looking back I suppose I could have called to the ascii character for space by calling to hex of 0x20 with unsigned char. But I went the easy route on this to just have an alternate output based on if the seconds were less than 10.

Additionally the more that is happening in the program the more latent the timer would be  since while sleep is set to 1000ms, everything else that is going on in the loop makes it very slightly latent to getting back to the sleep condition so I wanted to keep it as small and uncomplex as possible to reduce latency in the timer as a result of everything that goes on per iteration.

I havent set a stop watch side by side this yet to see if the latency builds to any noticeable offset, but depending on the processor that runs this, the weaker the CPU, the more noticeable the latency would build vs a faster CPU that would plow through the logic and wait at the 1000ms timer with less latency. I suppose if I saw a difference and wanted greater precision I could ADJUST the sleep to say 990ms if the rest of the program takes 10 ms etc to be as close as I can to 1000ms.

I was going to call to the macro from within the program, but macro naming would change, and I dont want to recompile for each different macro name or have to stick with specific macro names, so I will use this within a batch loop.

I went with 6 minutes on this timer because the process takes 5 minutes to complete and I wanted to add an extra minute of time before it carries out the macro process. In the past I have run into problems with race conditions when setting a timer to close to how long a process actually takes and so a minute of idle time every 5 minutes is fine and only amounts to the difference of this running 10 times an hour vs 12 times an hour, but at 10 times per hour I know that I wont have a malfunction from a race condition between timer of this automated process and timer of the game.

Code: [Select]#include <iostream>
#include <conio.h>
#include <windows.h>
using namespace std;

int main()
{

    // 6 minute Time Delay with count down
    long long int time=360;
    int minutes;
    int seconds;
    cout<<"6 Minute Timer ... Count Down = [ 6 : 00 ]"<<'\r'<<flush;
    while(time>0)
    {
              if (time>=360){
                            system("Color A");
                            }
                            else if (time<180 && time>60){
                                        system("Color E");
                                        }
                                        else if(time<60){
                                               system("Color C");
                                               }
        Sleep(1000);
        time--;
        system("CLS");
        seconds=time % 60;
        minutes=time/60;
        if (seconds<10){
        cout<<"6 Minute Timer ... Count Down = [ "<<minutes<<" : 0"<<seconds<<" ] "<<'\r'<<flush;
                        }
                        else {
        cout<<"6 Minute Timer ... Count Down = [ "<<minutes<<" : "<<seconds<<" ] "<<'\r'<<flush;
                             }
    }
    cout<<"End Timer"<<endl;

    return 0;
}

Since you are importing conio.h, you may as well use the clrscr() function instead of system("cls")

of course conio.h is iirc Windows only- and it's "C" rather than the "C++ way" . Realistically you shouldn't be clearing a console window anyway, to be fair. At "worst" programs like chkdsk for example will set the position and overwrite text (eg chkdsk's progress display). I thiink the idea is to preserve the console buffer, rather than "take control" of it if that makes sense. Of course in a program for your own use it's not going to matter, I suppose.

for your leading zero formatting issue, you can use iomanip which is part of the standard C++ library. Something like this:

Code: [Select]include <iomanip>
using namespace std;
...

for(int i=10;i>0;i--)
    cout << setfill('0') << setw(2) << i

For timing my example records a start time and waits until the difference between the current time and that start time reaches the desired amount, eg. somethiing like this should wait 5 minutes:

Code: [Select]startclock = std::clock();
while( (60*5) > (duration=(clock() - startclock ) / (double) CLOCKS_PER_SEC))
{

//do stuff, can check duration to see the current time that has elapsed for example and show counters

}

Of course it could still "overlap" and not be precisely on time due to the last iteration taking longer- for example if you add a sleep(500) into the loop it could be as much as 499ms "late" but you wouldn't usually add a sleep with a tiime offset. usually you'd use sleep(0) to yield control to other threads while waiting.

I actually started a program to do something like this because it is an interesting concept and I couldn't really find a program for the purpose; Task scheduler is similar but designed for a more hands-off use, and you can't really see tasks it runs as it runs them, how long until the next one is run, etc. updated in real-time. My thinking is rather than a console program it would be a standard desktop application controlled via a GUI. You would create a series of... Tasks? DelayItems? Repeaters? Not sure a good name for them that isn't confusing, with the appropriate information- the command line and arguments, the time delay between invokations, etc. And then when it is all configured you could start, pause, reset, etc the items in the list, all of which would show a nice little progress bar to their next invocation. Something like this:

This is the Update program I created for our (my companies) software deployments... (well it's based on a program I wrote about 7 years ago) My thinking is something like the progress bars it uses, but showing the "progress" to the next invoke, with a drop down to pause, stop, reset, or edit (command line, arguments, the time delay, etc)  each item when right clicked. The progress bar would say say "10% 9:00 left" and count down for each one, then when it got to 100% it would change to "Running Task" and the Task it was set to run would be invoked, and when it returned control the program would reset everything for another cycle. Paired with minimizing to the Notification Area and (optionally) showing balloons/notifications when it runs a task, it could be a useful general purpose program for when you want to run stuff at an interval and want to be able to see easily when things will be run next and how long until the next one runs.
Hey BC... very cool and yes... its a mix of C and C++ now that I look back at it.    Back in the days of Qbasic I use to mix Basic with QBasic too as it had legacy Basic support.

Thanks for pointing out Quote

clrscr() function instead of system("cls")

I got lazy trying to remember the clear screen function and said ok just use a system call to cls

Very cool use of iomanip for the leading zero correction. I forgot about iomanip's ability to format this way. Back in college I used it mainly for dealing with money where I'd be programming up point of sale type of programs and the get_money and put_money was used with iomanip. Going to add your correction to my program to get rid of the alternate IF logic for alt output when value less than 10.

As far as use of std::clock(); ... I actually avoided use of it because I thought it might be more difficult to get the precision for time delay and it looks like it taxes the CPU whereas sleep is less on the CPU. I read up on this article below on troubles with its use in which mainly depending on how powerful or weak of a CPU your running, the results will vary in how fast or slow the time delay is. So I figured a safer approach might be to just go with sleep() and set that to 1000ms and this way I am right in the ballpark at the get go and might just need to reduce from 1000ms to another lesser value after running it along side a clock or stop watch to see if the second intervals are somewhat sync. Running it today I see that its out of sync and might be as far out of whack as 1.2 seconds per 1 second. With this count down timer being slower (taking longer) to count down from 6 minutes.

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/35439992/stdclock-and-clocks-per-sec

To have an idea of how long it takes for time delay and the macro process, in the batch file I had added appending of date/time stamp into a log file so i see when the timer starts, when the timer ended, and when the macro ended before the timer starts again.

The system that I have running this is a weak electron sipper Intel Atom N280 single-core with Hyperthreading 1.66Ghz running Windows XP SP3 on 2GB RAM which runs consuming just 13 watts of power. Its barely able to run the flash game and is so laggy that no one in their right mind would ever have the patience to game with it, but the automated process is not painful for a human to endure and so i gave this otherwise modern flash game crippled netbook a purpose and its holding up well to it.

Other system I am running for the automated farming with a keyboard/mouse macro is the Sempron 3850 1.3Ghz Quadcore 4GB DDR3 running Windows 7 64-bit which runs on about 43 watts of power.

So the programming methods have to be as CPU FRIENDLY as I can make them. The 1.3Ghz Quadcore holds up really well, but the clock of 1.3Ghz for single-threaded program means that while this system is generally better than the Intel Atom, the Intel Atom might actually be faster at the single-threaded C++ program execution due to the 1.66Ghz clock.

Thats really cool that you found a purpose for the program you made 7 years ago for your work. If I had a bunch of different macros triggering at different times, then something like that would be cool to see what was last to run and whats next to run etc.

Hopefully when I share code its not painful as nails to a chalk board to see abstract or blended coding methods.  My college professor told me once that they should have a Rube Goldberg award to issue once a year to the most oddest of programming programmers, because he would have given it to me. Compiled the program runs as intended and without flaws and most wouldnt know how strangely constructed it was. But another programmer looking at the source code they generally are like  and  ha ha ha ... I do try to better my programming methods though and so I welcome all feedback. Thank you for your help and suggestions.  I think some of my problems with coding is that I have dabbled in so many different languages as programming as a hobby and at times there becomes a blend. Such as the C within the C++ etc. Since if it compiles without any issues... And runs as intended, then all is good

Yes, I see I was mistaken on what Clock() actually does. It records actual CPU time used by the process and isn't the equivalent of the more common "number of milliseconds since midnight". So timing it would probably need something like time.h.

If you use an "idle loop" where you call sleep(0) to yield control within a tight loop waiting for a time to elapse, CPU usage is fairly low. It can be lowered still by using larger sleep() times as well.

As  far as Code style/good practices are concerned, I'd be lying if I said I didn't put my hands up and say "whyyyy" once or twice with some of your samplings . Though I've done the same with my own code as well. It's  mostly a thing for future maintainability, so maybe doesn't affect small programs quite as much. The Program I used in that picture is about 20K lines of code across 48 files- which is certainly approaching "non-trivial". In addition to having to pop it open a few months later when we want to add some new feature or capability, or investigate an issue that was reported, it might not always be me doing so. maybe I'm on vacation or unavailable- like maybe during a deployment late at night there is some issue and I'm not around, or maybe I took time off or whatever. Which means that sometimes one of my co-workers needs to pop it open and take a look see, so it has to be fairly readable and understandable. That applies to all our software and I try to apply it to my own programs as well- Even if nobody else is really going to look at or modify it, I am, and looking at it a year later I may as well be somebody else entirely. a simple program could easily evolve into something much larger so writing it "clean" from the start is usually a good idea.

  So I am not alone in sometimes looking at own source code from the past at times ... and " I may as well be somebody else entirely"... I have had some projects of the past that I am like ok I need to print the source out and take colored pencils to it and notate what is going on... especially if I didnt put in comment lines to make future readability easy.  Lots of times I program and its just a direct brain dump of what needs to be coded up without adding comments as to why. And most programs they compile and run and I never revisit them, but on the rare occasion that I revisit a program from say 2 or more years ago, I have also said "Whyyyyy" to myself as to why I went with a specific way of doing it when reading it years later once I am able to follow it again, I sometimes realize that I over thought the code and really should have K.I.S.S method ( Keep It Simple Stupid )  Such as multiple lines that do the same thing and I really should have coded in reuse of functions vs making so many functions that function the same, so remove all those redundant functions an instead call to the function making for better code, and if say that function needed to be revised, its just that one function and not having to track down the 6 functions that do the same thing that all would need the change with the chance that I could miss one and now have a program that compiles and under certain conditions there is a legacy function triggering vs the most up to date instructions.

Thanks for your help with this BC and cool and well skilled approach to all of this.

Solve : Video editor for cell phone videos?

Answer»

I need to make a one MINUTE video clip using a CELL phone is there any free programs that are fairly easy to use to edit out parts of the video?Personally I've USED Adobe Premiere Clip on Android which is free.  Nothing special but I had no problem JOINING a few clips together and trimming them to make a video to SHARE on Twitter.

Of course if you want to do any real complex editing or a lot of it you would be better off copying the files onto a PC and editing them there.

Solve : Video Picture upside down then will not play after editing?

Answer»

I took a landscape picture not PORTRAIT with a cell phone evidently it makes a difference which WAY you hold the cell phone was using the camera on the screen side when I tried to play on my XP computer it would not play MP4 file so I got real player 10 now it played except the picture is upside down I WANTED to turn the picture AROUND and chop off a LITTLE on both ends of the video so went online changed my MP4 file to WMV now it plays right side up did not have to flip over next I got an editor Video Pad v 5.03 this allowed me to edit the ends of the video I saved it in WMV format it works perfect on XP using windows media player 11 I then copied this file to cell phone with android operating system tried to play it says can not play so I had to get a player for my cell phone that plays WMV files now it plays on my cell phone. If you try to play on a computer with real player 10 it does not play the video I changed WMV back to MP4 using the editor it plays the audio but not the video what did I do wrong? I was wondering if you post a WMV file online can anyone see it or is WMV files obsolete?

Solve : 720 verus 1080 hdtv?

Answer»

I was watching the Price is Right using an antenna it came in on two different channels at the same time one channel was 720 and the other was 1080 is this the WAY it is broadcast or is the signal going thru the air causing the loss? Actual you could not see any difference in picture quality from 720 to 1080.  If a channel is received in 720p it was transmitted in 720p. Likewise for 1080p. Unless you have a large SCREEN and good eyes you may not see any difference. Also 1080p TRANSMISSIONS may be so COMPRESSED that it looks no better than 720p.

Also bear in MIND that just because a channel broadcasts in 1080p or even 720p doesn't mean the show they are broadcasting was filmed at that resolution.

Solve : Computer Speaker Questioin....?

Answer»

I just GOT another computer, a Dell Optiplex 780 with Windows 7 professional on it. The problem is that my set of pc speakers won't WORK on this pc because the computer has a built-in SPEAKER. It is like listening to a transistor radio back in the 70's! What can i do to get my speakers to work on this pc? They worked fine with my last pc just a few weeks ago.
Thanks!What HAPPENS when you plug your speakers in to the rear audio out jack?  It should automatically switch off the INTERNAL speaker.  If not, go into the sound control panel and see if you need to set the external speakers as default.Thank you!

Solve : Spring Cleaning for free disposal of computers and scrap - Earth Day?

Answer»

Reduced my computer count from 18 to 9 computers through a local annual FREE recycle event through a computer repair shop. They advertised free disposal of computers and with participating in this event you get entered into a drawing to win $50 grocery store card and get a $50 coupon for $50 off a new computer through them. I filled out to try my luck at $50 in free groceries as well as brought the coupon to work in case anyone here could use $50 off of a new Apple computer or something.

Last year I missed out on this opportunity to get rid of computers and computer scrap for free.

Filled trunk of my car with 5 desktop computers and in one of the larger gaming cases that is like 12 years old i stuffed some old single-core laptops in there. Got rid of a boat anchor HP Server that weighed a ton and back in the day it was a powerful server, but the double dual-core server just isnt worth powering anymore plus its main board has the capacitor plague with blown, swollen and leaking capacitors so it wasnt very stable.

I pulled all the hard drives from these systems which I will retain and TAKE a sledge hammer to them when getting rid of them some day. The DVD Drives, Video Cards, RAM, and some of the CPUs that could be used in future or sold onto Ebay and dont take up much space to retain in case I can use them, I saved. Got rid of so many used keyboards and corded mice that saw better days and I have plenty of space brand new keyboards in original boxes still after buying 10 for $50 off of ebay of HP Business Class Keyboards 7 years ago. Still have 6 of those still in the original box and I like the feel of them.

I have a rats nest of power adapters, supplies for laptops, and other various cables that i need to dig through 3 boxes of and get rid of most of that. Almost all my IDE and Floppy cables went to this free disposal as well.

The people there accepting the free recycling of computers I dont think they expected a full trunk of obsolete and under powered junk systems.

So its officially Spring, and did my much needed Spring Cleaning to drop my computer count in half and get rid of unneeded computer scrap for free.

Anyone looking to get rid of computers for free can check with their computer shops in their area and see if they have any annual events for free disposal or what they charge for getting rid of it for you. At one time someone said that Bestbuy was disposing of computers and TVs. I brought a TV to Bestbuy and they greeted me with sorry we changed policy and no longer take CRT TV sets. The good thing is that it was a small 13 inch color TV and I didnt break my back to bring in a 200 lb 32" CRT, so I just propped it up onto my shoulder and brought it back out to my car and paid $5 for disposal of it at local dump.

Here is the event I took advantage of: http://spci.com/earth-day-2017-free-computer-recycling/Good on you...Good deal. It costs $15 per monitor, $5 for tower, and $5 for a keyboard here. My guess is they forgot about the mouse or there would be another $5 charge.In addition to lead and mercury, there are a number of other metals and other elementally materials that are toxic. As for plastics, some compounds are very dangerous and do not break down in a landfill. Quote

Good deal. It costs $15 per monitor, $5 for tower, and $5 for a keyboard here. My guess is they forgot about the mouse or there would be another $5 charge.

If wanting to avoid costs of disposal you can either take advantage of like I did for the Earth Day Recycle Program where they take STUFF for free or lower cost to get rid of it, or get rid of your computer for free to someone who wants it that might be able to use it. For 30 years I have gotten computers and pieces and parts and software and cables and extra keyboards and mice for free. I got even more stuff when people found out about my business. With my business many people liked being able to cut corners and fix their computer with that power supply that I got for free that I would charge $5 for plus installation. The little amount of money charged on the good parts I figured would cover the cost of disposal for the pieces and parts that are misfits ( unwanted ) or bad. At one point I had 27 computers most of them good but OLDER and so while that computer doesnt really have a market for sale to someone, power supply replacements were the most needed component as well as inexpensive RAM upgrades and optical drive replacements. The motherboards and CPUs were not really needed much, but one guy back 10 years ago had his computer die and I assisted in migrating his data over to a healthy computer. Gave him the entire healthy computer for $5 and just charged for the data migration from his old computer that had a partially blown motherboard ( leaky capacitors ) which would freeze up to a healthy computer that didnt have the capacitor plague also RUNNING Windows XP Home. He was VERY HAPPY to get a computer replacement for $5 and I took his old computer in as trade. Tossed out the motherboard to recycle after grabbing all USEFUL parts off of it. I had a reputation as a computer shop that was like a used car dealership trade in the old clunker that has issues and drive on out with the other used one that is healthy .... but the good analogy used car dealership that doesnt sell lemons.

If you pull your hard drive from this computer and retain this so no one else gets your personal data, and then offer the rest of the computer for free.... I am sure if advertised for free, must take all, you will find someone who grabs it up for free.

Out my way there is a Weekly Flea Market newspaper that only costs to list items for sale that are $100 or more.... Lots of people use it as a means to unload stuff for free onto others who can use it.

Additionally there are websites like Freecycle that you can list stuff for free and people locally can contact you to pick it up and problem solved with no cost at all. I use freecycle to get things as well as get rid of things that are still good to someone who can use them. https://www.freecycle.org/

Solve : Is DVI-I Dead/Obsolete??

Answer»

Bought a Geforce GTX 1050 the other day for $119.99 and went to install it and found out that my DVI-I to VGA adapter wouldn't fit the video CARDS DVI connection. Looked at the DVI port and saw it was a DVI-D ( digital connection) and didnt have the DVI-I ( analog legacy option ) so that wasnt going to work unless I also upgraded to a brand new monitor. Not planning on spending more than the $119.99, I brought the video card back and got a refund. Then looked to see if there was a newer GTX card that had legacy monitor support so that i could use my VGA type monitor with a newer card. Looking at Newegg it looks like the GTX1050 only comes in DVI-D. So I guess I might stick it out with my older video card a little longer, but it got me thinking did DVI-I all of a sudden disappear from video cards for legacy display support?

I prefer my older square 19" display vs modern widescreen displays and so i have been using my 10 year old VGA Samsung syncmaster 19" flat screen display at 1600 x 1200 resolution. Currently I get ok frame rates with the video card in this system a GT 730 2GB, but a newer GTX would perform way better for some games that the GT 730 you can see struggles slightly with.

I have another newer computer with the EVGA GeForce GTX 780 Ti, 3GB, 3072MB,GDDR5 384bit, Dual-Link DVI-I, DVI-D, HDMI,DP, SLI Ready Graphics Card (03G-P4-2881-KR) Graphics Cards 03G-P4-2881-KR  https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-Dual-Link-Graphics-03G-P4-2881-KR/dp/B00GDIIIPW and it has the DVI-I to support my legacy VGA connection. With the GTX 1050 that I picked up, it wasnt a power hungry card like most GTX cards and so I was hoping to use it in my older Athlon II x4 620 2600Mhz quadcore as a better video card than the GT 730 and at $120 it seemed like a good deal if it would work, but for the fact that it doesnt support DVI-I, I dont want to have to get a newer monitor and also have to change my setup which uses a 2-port KVM which is VGA based when switching between computers using the older square flat screen displays.

My setup I have two 19" displays and the display on the right is KVM switchable and the one of the left is connected to the 2nd display connection so that one of the 2 computers can use 2 displays while one of them shares the right display with the other computer. I use this setup to have info up on the left display or play a video and be able to work on the right display environment between 2 computers.

The power supply in the older gaming system doesnt have the 12V molex connector for high end video card power, so I am sticking it out for now with whatever video cards that will run powered directly from PCI 2.0 Express 16x slot in the Biostar MCP6PB-M2+ motherboard. If that GTX 1050 card had a DVI-I port all would be golden, better performance and powered direct from the PCI Express slot like the GT 730. * Seen some people get those P-connector to Molex adapters to power high end video cards on power supplies not intended for that application and not sure if that would be a good idea with this power supply that came out of a HP computer that is rated 400 watts.DVI and VGA are being phased out, not overnight exactly. In December 2010, Intel, AMD, and several computer and display manufacturers announced they would stop supporting DVI-I, VGA and LVDS-technologies from 2013/2015, and instead speed up adoption of DisplayPort and HDMI. By May 2016, Nvidia had joined the TREND and left DVI-I off the GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card.
Yes, it's been dropped over the last few years. For the DVI-I/DVI-A, It stopped making sense since the "transition" from Analog signalling to Digital was largely completed and there were only a few holdouts who wouldn't typically buy the latest graphics cards anyway (we know of one exception to that I suppose )

And as Salmon noted DVI connector in general is largely intended to be removed as well, in preference for more Display Port or HDMI CONNECTIONS (or Mini versions). Possibly due to the increasing popularity of multiple monitors in "higher end" setups. DVI connectors do take up an awful lot of real-estate, and some monitors have already started to remove it. For example my current monitor doesn't have a DVI port of any sort- it only has HDMI and DVI (Though it's USB-C port might work for display via thunderbolt with a properly equipped system)Reference:
https://www.engadget.com/2016/09/01/get-ready-for-simple-usb-c-to-hdmi-cables/
Quote

More devices are starting to ship with USB-C connectors built-in, and today groups behind HDMI and USB announced another way to take advantage of it. That method is HDMI Alt Mode, which means cable manufacturers can build a connector that plugs directly from the port on your phone, laptop or other device into the HDMI port on a TV or monitor. With this spec, there's no additional dongle or adapter needed in the middle.
Cool thanks for the info  =)

Solve : AD HOC Voice Communication for Android Devices that are offline??

Answer»

Checking to see if anyone knows of an AD HOC Wireless Voice Communication app that would work on android devices?

Was hiking the other day with friends in woods and was thinking it would be nice to not have to yell back and forth to each other and we didnt have radios with us, but we did have our smart phones with us, BUT there was no cell tower in range so the phones were worthless other than for knowing what time it was and offline apps.

I was then thinking these have wireless network adapters in them.... if there was an AD HOC app made then 2 devices in range of each other you could communicate over a P2P wireless network between 2 smart phones as if you had walkie talkies within whatever range the wireless works for the phones.

So I figured I'd ask to see if anyone knows if there is an app or not that works offline in AD HOC mode so that the phones can talk P2P and over their own wireless in an area that has no wireless network to hop onto?

Might be a fun project for someone if they are looking at making a android app. I wouldnt know where to begin with it. Biggest thing is that range of wifi between 2 phones wouldnt be that far so a set of walkie talkies would be better.

To me it seems as though this could be done. App would have a AD HOC discovery feature to discover another smart phone to pair to for P2P and know the pairing by hardware address of the wireless. Both smart phones or android devices agree to connect and then the session stays active for 2 way communication until app is closed or muted etc. Then you could walk through woods with a friend such as if hunting and 100ft apart without having to make hand gestures that the other doesnt see or even worse yelling back and forth to each other which scares the game away that your hunting.  YES. Look on Google Play for:

With the RELEASE of Two Way Walkie Talkie for Android, it is now a cross platform application. Talk to your friends using Android devices or other types of smart phones.
But I have not used it.
"Bluetooth Walkie Talkie" seems to be the only app that fits the bill. All the others appear to use wifi or wireless service to communicate between endpoints, which of course isn't going to work without either. "Two-Way:Walkie Talkie" would be useless without Internet via Wifi or a cell signal for example. It looks like BlueTooth Walkie Talkie can work locally via Bluetooth.Unfortunately, Bluetooth would not be a good option due it's short range. Quote

Yah, I was thinking wifi is short range anyways. If the app is free I can try the bluetooth version between 2 android phones and have my daughter on one and myself on other and see what kind of distance we get before it acts up as well as walk into woods with trees between us and see as well..

Thanks for everyones help on this  Just for reference, Bluetooth does not have to be short range.

Bluetooth technology is not limited to short-range connections however, offering three ranges of standard range connectivity, as shown in figure 1. With class 1 Bluetooth devices transmitting at 100mW, which have a standard range of approximately 100 meters or 328 feet, range is comparable to that of an 802.11b WLAN device.

I CONSIDER 300 feet to be short range...Well, Dave Mentioned ~100ft in the original post.

That said, 300 feet is only for Class 1 Bluetooth, which is not something found on smartphones.Without a nearby wireless router  as a relay, the AD- HOC range will be short. Maybe 300 feet, or less.

Solve : What is New with USB 3??

Answer»

This is a review of my favorite article about the new things in USB version 3. You can find many articles on the topic, this is my review of one of the best easy to read things out there.
USB 3.1 have you confused? Here’s everything you need to know about the standard
Author  Michael Crider has updated the article on April 11, 2017. So it now includes some new things you need to know.
He says:

...and the faster Gen 2 standard is appearing on portable HARD drives, enclosures, and adapters. As the Type-C port gains popularity with laptop and phone manufacturers, USB 3.1 Gen 1 and Gen 2 will likely spread through the consumer electronics INDUSTRY much faster.
He includes some nice PHOTOS of new USB drives with dual connectors. Yeah, the new standard is not pin compatible.  Read carefully the details.
Of course, he does not really cover everything,  still, he does cover a lot of material in a SHORT easy read. I recommend you look it over, unless you already know almost everything.

Solve : ReadyBoost on USB 1.1 with Windows XP Pro SP3 and 512MB RAM??

Answer»

Has anyone tried out ReadyBoost on a USB 1.1 port, and if so, was it at all beneficial?

Playing around with my Dell Laptop that is maxed out with 512MB Ram running Windows XP Pro SP3 on a Pentium III 600Mhz, I was thinking maybe it can see a performance gain using ReadyBoost. The CPU idles around 5% and when launching PROGRAMS it sometimes hits 100% utilization, but usually around 70% with lots of Hard Drive activity on 80GB IDE HDD.

I played around with ReadyBoost on a Pentium 4 2.8Ghz HT system with 1GB RAM running Windows XP Pro a few years back and saw a small performance gain with the 2GB stick in a USB 2.0 slot.

Given that information ONLINE SUGGESTS that the advantage of ReadyBoost shows up better with systems with say 512MB system RAM with a 1.5GB ReadyBoost allocation on a thumb drive. I was wondering if it would help out this Pentium III 600Mhz, which also is bottlenecked with USB 1.1.

I am going to try this out probably sometime tomorrow since it wont cost me anything to try it out since I have a small pile of thumb drives and can free up a 1GB or 2GB stick.

I was wondering if I should go with a smaller Readyboost allocation such as even just 512MB since the bottleneck of the 1.1 communications with a larger cache allocation might slow the system down waiting for RESPONSE from the readyboost cache, while if it were USB 2.0 the system might not have to wait for the response from the cache with a larger cache allocation.Just found this 3rd page in on google. I guess it wont work out well.

I'm inclined to agree.  I briefly experimented with it a few years ago with my laptop running Windows Vista and could not really notice any gains from it. Quote
If you opt to use ReadyBoost, bear in mind that the speed of your USB drive also determines how much improved performance you’ll get. If you have an old, slow USB stick, you may not see a noticeable increase in performance, even with a small amount of RAM. Windows won’t allow ReadyBoost to be used on PARTICULARLY slow USB flash drives, but some drives are faster than others.

Solve : Why, Really, Does Micosft Want The ARM chip??

Answer»

Cost? Low power? Maybe. Maybe not.
As most already know, Microsoft says soon they will have a Surface Pro that does not use a chip from  Intel. Nor from AMD, the only other choice for a x86 device.

[MS claims they have an x86 emulator running at almost at native speed.]

Cost? Power? Already some makers have low-cost low-power tablets with features like the Surface pro. They use an Intel Atom CPU. So maybe cost and power are not the big reasons. What do you think?

Maybe Microsoft wants to divorce Intel?
It has been a long marriage.

Solve : Was Microsoft to blame? No - the NSA.?

This story is still developing and is not yet hard  news.
Here is a today you tube interview based on a blog  by  Brad Smith  from  Microsoft.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUnSTnTxQJY
The man in the interview is Paul HURROTT.
Notre what he said about XP.

An interview with Brad Smith is found on CNN tech.

I do sort of wonder if they actually did fix it in March. Microsoft issued KB4013389 as part of Security Bulletin MS17-010, which fixes a critical security issue with SMB. Now, the claim is often that "Microsoft fixed this problem in March" based in this. That would seem completely reasonable. But I'm not entirely sure; Because after the ransomware attack they issued KB4019472 which lists "Security updates to Windows COM, Windows SMB Server, Windows server, Internet Explorer, and Microsoft Edge." if they already fixed it, what are these fixes for and why were they provided shortly after the ransomware appeared as a threat?I don't follow the logic that the NSA is at fault...all they did was discover the weak spot...What is SMB?  There  are over 40 definitions.
Must be one of these:.

Interesting.I'd think we'd all agree with what Paul said, it is really the users fault. If someone or a company is still running Windows XP, a 16-year old OPERATING system that had its support ended over three years ago they are the ones that should be at fault. Updates should always be done as soon as possible.To add to my point...it ain't the NSA's software...

Personally, I can see an argument for the NSA to "hoard" exploits to use for their intelligence purposes. However I think there can be agreement that once that if that information is leaked, there is a duty of care to responsibly disclose vulnerabilities to the affected software vendors. I think that is what they did here siince Microsoft patched the affected Operating Systems that were still supported in March.

Interestingly, a lot of information online regarding this issue is demonstrably inaccurate. I've seem posts saying it doesn't affect Windows 10, or only affected XP, for example.

Fact of the matter is that Windows 10 was vulnerable to the exploit, unless users had taken steps to remove SMBv1/CIFS support from the "Add/Remove Windows Features" control panel. The Security Bulletin released in March lists Windows 10 as an affected system and lists it as a Critical Remote Execution Exploit. Any Windows 10 system that does not have that patch or the May 9th Security Rollup (KB4019472)  is vulnerable to this exploit, and Windows Vista through 10 are all affected similarly.

The misconception that Windows 10 isn't affected can be blamed on Microsoft, since Microsoft said that the issue does not affect Windows 10, even though it does, which was a PR Spin because they consider Windows 10 a service.

In the case of businesses still using XP,  it's really a case of "Play stupid games, win stupid prizes". Quote

Is Windows 10 a subscription service or a product you buy and never update?

If it is a service, did the Windows 10 service fail?

If you buy Windows 10 and never want to update it, never connect to anything. Don't even conned to a modern coffee maker.
https://www.cnet.com/news/internet-connected-coffee-maker-has-security-holes/
Those two options are not in any way JOINTLY exhaustive.

Despite Microsoft's claims otherwise Windows does not operate as a service, it is a software product which runs on personal computers which can receive updates from their server which is not the same. And even if we could argue that it was a service, their blog post regarding this ransomware saying that "Windows 10 is not vulnerable" is misleading and even dangerous, and all because they want to push Windows 10 as more secure. Aside from the more obvious case where users may adjust Update functionality via things like Group Policy editor, it also misleads users who may have Windows 10 on systems that are isolated from the Internet, and thus unable to receive updates. If they have not updated since the patch was released than those systems are no less vulnerable than other affected versions of Windows and can be infected over the network. Basically, Systems running Windows 10 could be affected by the ransomware.

When they say "Windows 10 is not vulnerable" Microsoft is effectively pretending previous versions of Windows 10 don't exist and that every single version of Windows 10 is magically the latest version, as one would do in a "Software as a Service" environment, even though it's not true and is idiotic PR spin. They should keep their PR spin in their marketing, they shouldn't be putting it in posts that are effectively security advisories and are being used as a SOURCE of information regarding how Windows versions are affected.

There are plenty of users that could have been negatively affected by this use of a SERIOUS security issue as a chance to spin some positive Windows 10 PR. a concerned administrator might be looking into it to see if they should move their LAN-only file server and connect it to the Internet so it can update. But Microsoft says Windows 10 isn't vulnerable, so it doesn't need to update, so they don't. That system remains vulnerable.
According to Kaspersky Labs 98% of infected PC's were runnin Win7...I wonder how that information was gathered? I'd guess perhaps it's based on their own customer base?

Solve : Laptop similar to PC specs.?

So, I've been LOOKING for a laptop that is similar to my PC, as I want to be able to do all the same stuff I do on my PC currently, like a little bit of gaming, movies, programming, e.t.c, but I want to be able to do it while I'm on the go as well. I don't want to pay like 800 dollars for a Dell Inspiron 15 7000, but rather I would like to keep it close to what I already have.

CPU: FX 4200 (Intel would be fine as well  )
GPU: GTX 660
Hard Drive: 1 TB - Forgot the brand (500ish GB would be fine as well)
Memory: 8 GB

Some of the finer details such as battery life and such of said laptop aren't of super high importance to me as I'll probably be around a wall outlet most of the time, but I would like to find a laptop that is similar to those specs listed.

(Wasn't sure if this was the RIGHT forum or not, but it didn't seem to fit elsewhere.)
This is the right place. But you COULD have used the hardware area.
The general consensus is that laptops are seldom good gamers.

If battery life is an issue,  another battery and keep it in your pack.

Currently makers of laptops want them to be almost as good as desktops. They can make more profit on a laptop. Most new stuff now is abut mobile (low power) computing. Bother Intel and AMD want to sell you a new laptop.

Have you thought about a used laptop?  I'm not specifically wanting it for gaming, I just want it to be about as good as the hardware I mentioned, I don't want to buy a 1000 dollar laptop with a 1050 and all of that in it, Just a relatively cheap laptop that can still do stuff. Quote

What is the most complex game you would run on it, so we can figure out a good pairing? As well as what is your actual budget... You said you dont want to spend $800 or more and want cheap? The syringe slides in between the thumb and index finger.
Then, with a click, a microchip is injected in the employee's hand. Another 'cyborg' is created.
What could pass for a dystopian vision of the WORKPLACE is almost routine at the Swedish startup hub Epicenter.

Next, please...

Go ahead, ask me about he dentist. Back when I was a kid I remember hearing of this done, ((but similar but different way)). This is from back in 1985. They call it a chip, but its micro film really.

http://people.com/archive/a-dentist-and-a-detective-chip-in-to-develop-a-micro-tooth-i-d-vol-23-no-23/

Today I suppose they could hide it better embedded WITHIN the tooth and use RFID VS a film strip of up to 1000 characters of the past. But if the teeth are destroyed or removed etc it wont help much. DNA is pretty much the best method for identity.

Quote
A Dentist and a Detective Chip in to Develop a Micro Tooth I.d.

By People Staff

Posted on June 10, 1985

Dentist Jeffrey Maxwell, 35, and Detective Jim Conover, 34, have devised a different kind of “chipped” tooth. Their innovation, a 2.5 millimeter plastic disc, bonded to any back molar, can contain 1,000 characters that may be read with an ordinary 15-20 power magnifying glass. The Micro I.D. can carry the owner’s name, address and phone number, next of kin and medical data about organ donations, allergies and prescriptions. Maxwell and Con-over, both of Pekin, Ill., hope that their disc will REVOLUTIONIZE the field of forensic identification, filling the present gap in identifying missing children, emergency room patients and disaster victims.

Desperation was their motivation. Conover, a Pekin police detective for 11 years, has come across the remains of many child victims who are never identified. Maxwell, a forensic dental consultant, has often been stumped by the fact that “dentistry has improved so much that many children no longer require tooth restorations. So their dental charts are often identical to each other, and one of every two people never goes to a dentist.”

The secret behind the I.D. chip, Maxwell says, is “the new plastics that have come out of NASA research that make it possible to rebuild the teeth.” (The bonding agent was developed by NASA to attach tiles to the space shuttle.) The tooth I.D., which has been affixed to more than 5,000 patients in all 50 states, has the support of the American Dental Association, which editorialized, “Everybody wins.”

Adds Maxwell, “The main reason I did this is because I’m a father. My son at age 5 looks nothing like he did at age 2. Had he disappeared then, there’s no way he could have been identified.”
Nice catch. The use of Rfid chips is much more widespread that I thought. A study wazs made tagt led to the conclusion that many Americans already have some kind of chip embeded whether the know it or not.

So many dentisits do it. Now this is not the kind of thing where you can track somebody down the street. Rather, a device taht cn be detected at a very close range only. A probe has to be very close to the chip. It is on the order of two iinches, about 5 cm

This means that if people want it, we couldget rid of plastice credit cards, never catty case and we don;t have to sigh in to our computers and never use passwords again.

Yes, DNa testing would be better.

Hey! How about you and I go together and patent a impl;ant chip that will read the DNA of cells in contact with the thing. We could bwe rich!

No, wait... somebody already did that.
Has not been fully developed yet. We are too late.
The groundwork was sstudied back in 2000.

Abstract

Wide-scale DNA testing requires the development of small, fast and easy-to-use devices. This article describes the preparation, operation and applications of biosensors and gene chips, which provide fast, sensitive and selective detection of DNA hybridization. Various new strategies for DNA biosensors and gene chips are examined, ALONG with recent trends and future directions. The integration of hybridization detection schemes with the sample preparation process in a ‘Lab-on-a-Chip’ format is also covered. While the use of DNA biosensors and gene chips is at an early stage, such devices are expected to have an enormous effect on future DNA diagnostics.

Clearly this is an old IBM computer but I can't figure out exactly what model it is.  I'm wondering if someone might recognize it.   I believe the gentleman in the photo is Jules Schwartz of JOVIAL fame.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Its too bad you didnt attach the image as an image here so that a download of a zip file isnt required and the image would just open safely. From where I am at now, I am restricted from downloading stuff, but if the image was attached using the sharing of an image file, it would safely open by the browser without download required. Maybe this is because of its size of the attachment, but an image can be resized easily and still be under 700kb. I personally avoid download of zip files from questionable origin, so I wont be able to assist unless the image is linked as a jpg or some other image format that is safe.  I re-hosted the jpeg.

here

Looks like an IBM 704 Mainframe, based on finding images of IBM's mainframe models, but I'm far from an expert. It's the only one I found that seems to also have the flipping switch panel as part of it's peripherals. The actual "Computer" is in the background to the left, and what can be seen there is consistent with other images I found of the 704.

Jules Schwartz worked on the PACT compiler for the IBM 704, so I suppose that's consistent too.Thanks BC for re-hosting that image.

 Very Cool Picture. Unfortunately its older than my computer knowledge goes back to. If it were a computer from the 70s or 80s I'd probably be able to tell. Looked on Google images to the model 704 and I dont quite see a match. Maybe BC found a image that pairs up to yours.Yes ... I checked as well.  Seems to be close to the 704 but I'm guessing not quite it.  Seems similar to its cousin the 709 as well ... but again I don't see anything really quite like it.

Its interesting how customized (boutique?) these early computers seem to have been despite their 'mass-produced' characterization.

Why not ask IBM and include the pic ? ? Quote

Why not ask IBM and include the pic ? ?

Awesome idea.... They might be interested in that picture if they dont have one of it.

Also to mention that... some systems back then deviated from standard build. They would be build to order, so it might be a variant of 704 or 709 etc. Whatever a company or organization with LOTS OF MONEY needed, a system could be specially engineered and built for it since money talks. Computers and Mainframes were not mass produced back then. They were great big monsters with lots of relays and tubes and a very hungry electrical power need. I havent looked into population reports of systems back in the 50s, but if I was to make an educated GUESS, i would think that there might be only a few hundred of these monster computers tops. The US Government for Defense having greater portion of them. And only the giant banks and engineering firms being the rest of the population + the larger colleges that had the funding or donation of such great monster computer/mainframes.

I read in a BOOK once that one computer used so much electricity and due to relay logic, ( de-energized relays dont consume power but energigized relays do ), and so it caused an unusually heavy power demand at times if more relays were energized than de-energized and so it made peoples lights flicker as the line voltage would dip from excessive current needs.

When I worked for Allen-Bradley / Rockwell Automation there were some customers that wanted their own specific product and so they had a variant of a standard Intel i960 micro controller with specific firmware for their needs as well as board mods to make the controller to their spec needs. Money Talks and odd builds become of it. Part Numbers would be almost the same as the standard product but have a DIFFERENT number or letter in part number to identify it as what it is. These were low production for specific customer. Where as the IMC S-Class CONTROLLERS they made tens of thousands of them with other flavors that were standard options and some options quickly implemented by swapping firmware and installing or removing such as an Axis-Link or RIO Card.

May 1995 to October 2001 as an ET for Service Department and Production Test & Repair for mostly IMC S-Class & 1394 Crusader ... smaller production boards were PWM A3, PWM C, PWM D, MAX Boards, SAM Boards, Resolvers, Transducers, Picopath CNC Plasma Cutter controls, Micrologix PLC.

IMC S-Class Controllers  = http://literature.rockwellautomation.com/idc/groups/literature/documents/td/4100-td023_-en-p.pdf

The PWM C and PWM D's were the most fun I think to service because when they failed on 48VDC or 90VDC when switching a large motor from clockwise to counter clockwise at 100% speed it made a load pop and shower of sparks like a roman candle blowing a hole the diameter of a 22 bullet through the heavy duty power MOSFETs like the one pictured in which there were I think 6 of them mounted to the board and angle aluminum heatsink and the analog components like 1/4 watt resistors and diodes catch fire, and the lovely smell too. We had to run the boards hard after repairing them and sometimes a borderline analog component from the prior failure made its way to the repair and BOOM when full reversal. If you could switch direction of the large DC motor and not blow it then it was good to go. I brought in a piece of plexyglass from home and stood back when testing these. Very rarely did they blow because I was good at fixing them, but when they did you didnt want to get showered with sparks and slag from the MOSFET failure.

DC motors. Fun. Lots of unruly energy. My dad was an electrical engineer. he told me about the old days, he qualified after WW2 but he saw plenty of old industrial installations from the early days still around. Big open frame motors, 100 HP upwards, 500 V DC, controlled by open starter gear and bare knife switches mounted HIGH on the wall on slate panels operated by a long pole with a hook on the end (so a brief arc wouldn't trouble the operator too much. That was your Health and Safety). Switch men were men in those days! If a switch was opened and an arc persisted they had wooden paddles also on poles and the idea was to try to interrupt the arc with the wooden (non-conductive) blade. This could be tricky because as welders know you don't want to look at an arc if you value your eyesight. The canny guys kept a pair of smoked glass googles handy. Also they would have a lot of incandescent melted copper and brass dripping down while they were fooling around with the paddles which might well catch fire. Sometimes the only thing to do was vacate the switch room and get the main incoming supply breaker opened. Then you might have to wait for the AC-DC rotary converter to run down before the arcing would finally stop.

A flashover in a big motor could be dramatic too. He showed me a report on the death of a guy who was walking past the open doorway of a building at the exact moment a flashover occurred in a big motor inside. All his clothes were blown off, he didn't have a mark on him, and the postmortem showed he died of blast injuries to his lungs like a high explosive bomb had detonated.

Solve : Need help with uninstalled update for my smartphone?

Answer»

I purchased this Moto g4 plus smartphone recently.  A message came up saying that there was an update that was needed to be installed from Motorola.  I downloaded the update and after it was completed I hit the icon that said "install" on it.  After 10 minutes a message came back saying: Start up Failed. Your device didn't start up successfully. Use the Software Repair Assistant on computer to repair your device.  Connect your device to your computer to get the Software Repair Assistant.Below that it says: AP Fastboot Flash Mode (secure)failed to validate recovery image.  ERROR Failed to pass validation.backup to fastboot.  Fastboot
reason:   I tried to find a software repair assistant on my computer:however, there was none.  Is there someone out there that might be able to give me a clue as to what to do?  I am real new to smartphones and other related WI fi devices. Any suggestions out there would be appreciated.  Thank you in advance.You have had a bad smartphone experience.
It is odd taht a new phone would need an update. Have yu made contact with the vendor? Is there some KIND of warrenty? In the USA  some  electronic devices have a 90 day warrenty. If you are in the Usa, ask the vendor for a refund or replacement.

My own experience with smartphnes has been limited, but often the failure rate of smartphones is ,in my opinion, much too high. Best thing to do is to find a local dealer taht offers direct help at the time of sale.

You may have to buy a new phone.
HI,

Thanks for the reply.  I just got a hold of Motorola and had a online CHAT with them.  They finally decided that MAYBE it would be best to send it back and have a new one sent back in exchange.  It really seems odd that downloading an update from Motorola would cause this mess.  The phone does'nt turn off when it is supposed to even though I hold down the off button for an extended amount of time.  Turning it on is a problem as well.  It didn't do this before the update was downloaded.

Thanks again.

Solve : If I change passwords on gmail can someone access on laptop w/prev pwds??

Answer»

Working with a nightmare client. Had injured my back prior and so she said leave your laptop here and save your back. So, I said um ok. I left it there and the next morning I was puzzled to get an EMAIL from her from my own email account! She said blithely (as I hadn't completely twigged that she had done that, I had just gotten an email from 'me' from her!) 'oh your email was still open and I am paranoid now about my email so I used yours'. How mindboggling is that? Anyway, because I am easygoing and because I DONT have anything embarrassing on there , I didn't say anything. Anyway, so now she is threatening not to pay my invoice and still my laptop is there. So, I think I already know answer to this, as laptop will go to sleep, and gmail doesnt stay open indefinitely right ?, it needs to be relogged in. So, I went and changed all my passwords on all my accounts and just wanted to know unequivocally whether she will have ACCESS to my accounts now that i have changed the passwords off site?

Like what if she says "I forgot my password?" If you go to your Google account you can review the connected devices and remove the laptop. The "Forgot password" APPROACH would SEND an E-mail to whatever e-mail you have as a backup with a security code, or, it would send it to your smartphone.

You can also set up two-factor authentication.

Also I would like to hire you. Please bring your most expensive laptop.  Haha, that's funny. I think I have learned some lessons!

Thank you for your help!! Another question, is there a way to see all the info about devices? Not just 'recent'? Also, does Google get the location wrong? It seems they shouldn't having google maps and all. I don't want to accuse her of taking my laptop out of her home when they just got the location wrong.Sounds like you need to settle these issues with her...not here.

Just sayin... Quote from: dahling on June 16, 2017, 06:46:23 AM

Solve : Microsoft Clean Windows 7 Install - After update Microsoft Support Scare Tactic?

Answer»

So I installed Windows 7 Home 64-bit clean to my one system that needed a clean install after 3 years of use in which it started to have some issues after games installed and uninstalled etc. Upon install after activating Windows 7 online, it performed a few updates and then I was greeted with this screen attached after reboot of first batch of updates. The way that it is worded it can be misinterpreted as Windows 7 no longer supported and its best to upgrade to Windows 10 with a line as strong as "You are no longer receiving Windows Update security fixes that can help protect your PC from harmful viruses, spyware, and other malicious software." with the message stating as quoted below in full. To the lower left you can see the option to tell it to manually update to Service Pack 1 in which Windows 7 would not be out of date and a 190 updates await you after going this route vs venturing on to upgrading to Windows 10 through pressure/scare tactics. They are bending the english here with "Your PC is running an outdated version of Windows 7". As for YES its outdated because its SP 0, but by which after installing SP1 it is still supported until 2020 as per. Microsoft ended mainstream support for Windows 7 on January 13, 2015, but extended support won't end until January 14, 2020. And after fully patched its secure still.

Quote

SORRY to Interrupt, but this is important.

Your PC is running an outdated version of Windows 7.

You are no longer receiving Windows Update security fixes that can help protect your PC from harmful viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 10 for the latest security features and protection against malware.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]The supposition is probably that somebody still running a version of Windows 7 that hasn't received security updates since 2013 is probably easier to encourage to switch to Windows 10 because they probably aren't particularly Computer Savvy.

I don't think it's a problem myself as it does still allow you to install SP1. If there was no way to install SP1 or saying "remind me later" meant that it automatically installed Windows 10 later, well, that would be another story but that isn't how it works as far as I'm aware.

Hi Dave

Recently had a new Windows 7 installed. I did not get the message you did, but when I turned the machine off, it told me I have 198 updates to be installed.
Can I assume I will not have an issue at least until 2020?
Other than that, I also have an issue with my e-mail account. Where would be the right place to post a question about that?

Thanks

More info would be helpful on this MATTER. Who is the e-mail service through and what problems are you having? Does this problem only happen on this one computer or on others as well to where its an account issue?  For what it s worth... A number of credible web sites are saying, in effect, Microsoft wants to ditch Windows 7 for the wrong reasons. It is not because of some flaw in the Windows 7 design. It is about what Microsoft wants to do.

Here are  some links that, IMO, imply that idea.

This problem has been bugging a lot of Windows 7 users for a very long time, and users are still complaining about Microsoft not solving it today: users cannot go pass the Checking for updates window and go into the Downloading updates part. In this case, it becomes impossible for Windows 7 users to update the newly released update packs or patches from Windows, which could be a severe risk if the released pack is vital to certain BUGS.

A patch, sometimes just called a FIX, is a small piece of software that's used to correct a problem, usually called a bug, within an operating system or software program.

No software program is perfect and so patches are common, even years after a program has been released. The more popular a program is, the more likely rare problems occur, and so some of the most popular programs in existence are some of the most-patched.
A collection of usually already-released patches is often called a service pack.

Solve : Leaving Computer ON 24/7?

Answer»

I read some years ago that it is actually better to leave your pc on rather than turn it off daily. I do not know if that's really true and thought I better get the info from you experts! I don't want to harm my pc! Thanks!There are pros and cons for both options. Whatever works best for you is fine. Personally, I've always shut down my systems at the end of the day.I think deciding WHETHER to run a PC 24/7 can depend on whether you have householder responsibilities like paying insurance premiums and power bills. My home fire insurance specifies unplugging non-essential electrical devices when on I'm away for more than 7 days. I don't think I could show, in the event of a fire caused by an unattended PC, that having it running was "essential".

More important, perhaps, is the cost of the power. My power company charges 0.12 UK pounds for one kilowatt-hour. My PC uses on average about 150 Watts. A powerful gaming PC might use 200 plus. If I keep it running 24/7 for a year, it will cost 157 pounds (assuming the price does not INCREASE!). I am away at work 5 days a week for 10 hours a day, I sleep about 8 hours a night, and I have the PC on about 12 hours a day at weekends. I am away on vacation about 15 days a year. If I turn the PC off when I don't need it, I have calculated I save 113.62 pounds each year by not having it on 24/7. I would save the cost of my PC in 5.27 years. I have been running PCs like this for more than 20 years, and none of them have FAILED (as far as I know) because of not being left on 24/7. In fact after around 5.27 years, I genrally want to get a new one. Also, I think it's important to think about the planet.

I have seen that the average cost of one kWh is around 12 cents in the US, so those figures of mine work there too, using dollars instead of pounds.

I've never really seen a convincing argument for or against leaving it on in terms of life expectancy, I imagine if there is a benefit, the PC would have to be so old for it to be significant that I doubt you'd still be using it!

I personally switch all my PCs off when I'm not using them with the exception of things like SERVERS that have to be running 24/7.  That said, I have no problem leaving them on if they are doing something like performing a long running task.  That said, I don't shut it down every time I'm finished using it, I tend to switch it on the first time I use it in the day then leave it on during the day if I pop out to the shops or something for an hour or so then turn it off when I'm finished with it for the day.  For me the main factor is power consumption, my power prices are very similar to Salmon Trout's, it's simply not worth the extra power bill.

My overall opinion on the matter is that if you have a reason to leave it on 24/7 then by all means do it, but otherwise I see little point based on the extra power consumption.Supposedly computers last longer with less stress from being turned on and off, but I don't think that actually matters; that same logic applies to pretty much anything that runs on electricity and few people argue that for example light bulbs should be left on all the time. So I think it should be left up to other concerns, like those Salmon stated.

I leave my Main desktop computer on all the time usually- I usually turn off the monitors at night though. I usually have a lot of stuff I'm doing- database query windows, different projects open, etc. and I prefer to keep that state for when I use it next, rather than start all the software up again and figure out what I was doing. Outlook and Skype notification noises usually get me up in the morning if my Phone alarm doesn't do the job too. self-centered perhaps but in my defense my electricity comes almost entirely from clean power sources (Hydroelectricity). So I'd expect the damage to mostly be in my wallet.

It's just the one PC I leave on- I have a few others and tend to turn them off when not using them, or at least I leave their sleep features on to reduce their power usage if I forget to do so. Quote from: BC_Programmer on June 02, 2017, 04:20:53 PM

Supposedly computers last longer with less stress from being turned on and off
I think I have heard tales of old server hard drives that might not survive a power cycle... better not to risk it... Also I read about an early computer (the Whirlwind? I'm not sure) that had thousands of vacuum tubes and a certain percentage would fail on power up (like filament bulbs - remember them? - used to) anyhow it was the property of the US Navy and was guarded by the Navy equivalent of MPs who told the civilian computer scientists that regulations for electrical plant said it had to be powered down each night when left unattended... they got so tired of the work this caused they got a special dispensation.

Everybody is right.
There is no real good reason to leave you PC on on turn it off. Except one.
If yo want it off, turn it off.

Solve : Battery failure...battery replaced. Still says fail?

So my laptop battery failed. No big deal. Bought  a new one and popped it in. Turned my laptop on after days of it being DEAD and it still says the battery has failed and even though the batter says it's fully charged, my laptop will shut off when I unplug it. It's a dell with windows 10. I don't know what to do. First off ... Is the laptop new enough to be covered by any warranty?

Next is this replacement battery a DELL part or a generic brand MADE to fit in a Dell?

Additionally this could be caused by a connection ISSUE with the battery and laptop.... was this laptop ever exposed to any liquids or taken any falls to where the battery connection to main board could be damaged?

Have your new battery checked under warranty if it is not defective. If not, there might be a PROBLEM with your laptop's charging system.

Solve : Google: Pay Attention to Older People.?

Answer»

This rank is directed to Google and the others who ignore the needs of older people.

Among older people, some 7 % or more have some kind of vision problem. that can not be correlated with eye-glasses.  It is hard for use to use the internet when the text is no big and clear. Yet advertisers continue to use techniques  tantamount to fraud by making it hard for normal people to understand something. With a vision problem, it is very hard to see an advertiser is trying to trick you.

I do not know if this all comes from Google or the whole industry. More and more it is becoming harder to read web pages. My doctor says my vision is the same. I go to a page to read something and the page stops loading and a big video plops over the headline I am trying to read. Is I scroll down, it follows me down the page.

Other tricks are  the Google ads that insert themselves in a text I need tread. My only defense is to use a feature in Firefox that purgers the ads.

Bu the way, Why can't Chrome run in XP? Other lessor companies have no trouble using XP. What is wrong with Google Chrome? Are you too busy to address the needs  of a small group of us that need XP  because it is easier  to use?

I put this here because trying to communicate with you is frustrating. So I vent my frustration here, on a public forum. Please do not ignore older people. Everybody grows old. You will too.  Does increasing text size/scaling in a browser window not work? I'd expect that if image-based ads remained the same size, that would make them easier to ignore, wouldn't it?

As far as the web is concerned, it becoming harder to use is not limited to those with poor vision. I'd argue that it's a larger-scale issue where web designs have moved from serving the interest of the browser/viewer to serving the interests of advertisers and what makes the site the most money.

You mentioned videos, for example.  There are a few sites where I've found articles and tried to read them. And an automatically playing video appears in the lower-right.

Worse still, while you can pause the video, it will automatically start playing again in 30 seconds. Who thought of that crap? I don't want it to autoplay and I don't want it to start playing again in 30 seconds when I stop it. That doesn't even make sense. It's clearly geared not towards giving a pleasant user EXPERIENCE but making sure to crank up the number of views on the video to make advertisers happy.

Windows XP is currently twice as old as Windows 3.1 was when Windows XP was released. Current versions of Firefox don't support Windows XP either. Supporting Windows XP means more testing, certain features either cannot be used or must be conditional. Every new feature, update, or even bugfix ideally needs to be tested on all supported platforms.

More trivial applications are easy to have support older platforms. There is far less conditional logic, and adding older platforms doesn't add much time when testing. But for larger applications (And browsers definitely qualify) verification and testing is a time-sink, one which must be repeated (or at least should be repeated) on all supported platforms, and on various supported configurations- for example it's arguable that iit's not enough to test on Windows 7 and Windows 8 for Windows 7 and 8 support- it has to be tested on both platforms on a number of different DPI settings, with multiple monitors, lower and higher resolutions, and so on and so forth.

Supporting a platform without good reason is throwing time and money down a hole. It just doesn't make sense to reach back to Windows XP for that testing unless there is a very, very, very good reason. Chrome and Firefox running on Windows XP would be like MS Office 2000 supporting MS-DOS!Your arguments are sound.

Allow a metaphor.
Not really a good metaphor.
Think about automobiles and Older people. Many older people prefer a newer car if it is comfortable, safe and easy to drive. The steering wheel is in the same place. The  instrument panel is about the same.  Often still analog, or looks like analog.
In fact, many will admit that the older car they left was not as easy and safe.

Windows XP started  August 24, 2001. So it is over 16 years old.
The average age of Automobiles is about 11 or 12 years.
Why does software age faster than [automobile] hardware?

Microsoft wants older versions of Windows dragged and dropped into the recycle bin, with relatively-recent iterations like Windows 7 not exempt from the drive.
Microsoft has told Windows Vista users that the operating system will reach its end of support on 11 April 2017, and will no longer receive security and other updates.

The above link goes on to state that Windows 7  has a 48 % market share and Windows 10 has about 25%. But Windows  XP at about  t 8.5% is above Windows 8.1 at just under 7%.

So if market share means anything,  just imagine Microsoft  dropping Windows 8.1 because of its poor market share. Now if I were a developer, but I am not, I would think more about giving support to the XP users rather than the Windows 8.1 users.

Going further with that kind of thinking, Microsoft should cut back on Windows 10 development until more people show an interest in it. Windows 7 is the current leader.

As for Vista, yeah, they had to drop it. Hasta la vista, Vista.

After almost two years, I still have a hard time with Windows 10 and I get an upset stomach trhying to tolerate its unfriendly desktop.

Then it goes on to say:

Thankfully, Microsoft's now ancient operating system, Windows XP, has faced a decline in market share for the second consecutive month; it currently sits at 7.44%. On the other hand, Windows 8.1's market share has also decreased to 6.66%.
Why does she think that is good? It could mean 7% of the marker just can not use Windows 10 and never will.

I didn't actually mention this from the OP because it wasn't really your main point.

What about Windows XP makes it easier to use? Later versions of Windows do not lack any of the accessibility features, so I am left to conclude that it is easier to use simply because you don't have to learn to use it. I certainly hope the suggestion is not that those of an advanced age are incapable of learning! Otherwise it seems like using XP is a choice rather than a need. I don't know if counts as "coming out" about my age, but I am now 65, and it really pisses me off when people assume that because I am at retirement age I am an IT nincompoop. I call it "youngsplaining" (by analogy with mansplaining) e.g. when they tell me what Python or Linux are (and get it wrong). By the way, if text is too small, perhaps because I am too idle to clean my eyeglasses, I just hold down Ctrl and tap the + key on the numeric keypad (works for most browsers and all my favourite editors).

I've found a lot of younger people who are completely incompetent when it comes to tech. At least with older less young people who weren't interested or exposed to technology, they generally say as much; meanwhile some younger people who grew up with the tech seem to think they are experts because of that. I'm sorry but no I don't think you should start a PC repair BUSINESS because you are "good at installing apps". Nor can I "put in a good word for you" because you learned how to use "Fill Down" in Excel.

I can only imagine some of the results of the new generation of the non-technically inclined thinking they are IT experts. However I would not be surprised to see them pull out a Woodwind Recorder during a C# Interview. Quote from: BC_Programmer on June 09, 2017, 09:42:50 PM

Really? Are you sure? Many vision impaired people have to fin-tune colors and font and contrast personally. The is no on-size-fits-all or anything even close. It looks like Microsoft  got rid of the people  that did accessibility for Windows XP.
Where are these features now?

2. How do I find the find the mouse pointer?  Hold the ctrl key? No.
3. How to I adjust font ans size of icon  titles?

If there is a page where Microsoft or anybody explains all the visibility options, pleas tell me.

Really? Are you sure? Many vision impaired people have to fin-tune colors and font and contrast personally. The is no on-size-fits-all or anything even close. It looks like Microsoft  got rid of the people  that did accessibility for Windows XP.

I'd guess you are referring to the "Visual Effects" dialog? That was for customization, and wasn't intended to be used for ease-of-access. Win10 has several High Contrast Themes.

By changing the Mouse Pointer Scheme.... Same way as you do on Windows XP:

Windows 8 and Later also adjust the size of the Mouse Pointer based on the current DPI Setting.

2. How do I find the find the mouse pointer?  Hold the ctrl key? No.

"Show Location of Pointer when I PRESS the CTRL Key". Again, setting is in the same place as it was on Windows XP. With Win10 you have to click the "Additional Settings" Option on the new Control Panel Interface to access the property pages.

3. How to I adjust font ans size of icon  titles?
You can change your System DPI.

You could also use the built in capability to change Title Bar Text Sizes. From Windows Settings, System, Display, then "Advanced Display Settings" on the right pane. "Advanced Sizing of Text and other Items" is present in the "Related Settings" at the bottom:

Font sizes can go to 24 here, and that also scales with the system DPI.

4. How do I choose any color I want for the desktop.
I'm not sure what you mean by this. If you mean the background you can do that in the expected location- same area which allows you to set the background wallpaper, or in the Theme Settings.

Now, it looks like they reworked some of this area of Control Panel, so perhaps fully custom options aren't available anymore (I can't seem to find them), though you get a not-wholly awful selection of colours. Custom colors definitely are possible, as I have custom options set for both.

There are a few High Contrast options in the themes. These change the Title Bar appearance.

You can change the Accent Color as well, which can be set to change the title bar colour. (This used to have a fully custom option but seems they removed it- I'm set as a custom colour and yet can't find where I did so!)

It's certainly no harbinger of good design,  with it's mishmash of old and new control panels, having to hop between them, and updates often shuffling things around; And the lack of the full Visual Effects dialog capabilities to customize pretty much everything down to specific fonts, colours, sizes, etc. is hardly great- We should be able to change things like the title bars font face or the font of Menus or whatever without resorting to registry hacks. Nonetheless, many of the things you were looking for were actually in the same place as they were in Windows XP; all that changes is the method of getting to those options. It's possible that many of these capabilities in Win10 were added SINCE you last used it, as I remember the earlier releases being rather scant on many of the customization options. Thank you very much BC. I have looked for those things for a year and never found them. In Windows XP the ENTRY point was in accessibility.  Windows 10 did not let me know there were other places I could go to make visual adjustments, so I thought they were not there.

My greater criticism is  with Google, not micros ft.
Google does not have, IMO, any good reason to ignore or threaten millions of Windows XP users. It almost seems like Microsoft and Google are in a secret collusion** to wean users to Windows 10. Would that benefit Google?

On the other hand, Kudos to Adobe for keeping a version of Flash that can be used on Windows XP. So I can watch Netflix on my Windows XP without the need to reboot into Widows 7 or Windows 10.

Could you perhaps explain this further? I don't see how no longer supporting Windows XP in Version 50 and later is in any way encouraging users to use Windows 10. Seems that it is rather trying to encourage people not to use an 16-year old Operating System and which no longer receive security updates, and washing their hands of attempting to keep Google Chrome from functioning on that OS due to the additional support, development, and testing effort required. There are three other Windows releases that are not Windows 10 that are fully supported for now.

When Firefox dropped support for Windows 98SE in 2008, did it "almost seem" like a secret collusion to push people towards Windows Vista?

The message in Google Chrome is advising that they stopped releasing any updates to Google Chrome on Windows XP in April 2016, and thus your use of the browser is at your own risk.

Dropping support for Windows XP is in no way brushing you off because of your age, it's avoiding supporting an older Operating System, not older people.
You logic is sound.

 Sometimes I do use Chrome.
When  I want to Chrome cast, I boot up Windows 10 and start up chrome.
That  is one important area where XP is just behind the current stuff.

The  PC use profile is changing. It is now a part of a larger communications, entertainment and personal digital assistant world whit interactive visual effects that will go way beyond what  you can do with just a monitor. Older operating systems will not hold up in the new cyber  frontier.

Meanwhile, I am in a rut trying to get up to speed with Windows 10.

I've worked in software development for the past 31 years and the reason software companies push people to move to newer versions of their software is because it is expensive to support those previous versions.  A company would much rather use their highly paid developers to create and maintain newer versions than have them maintain older versions THAT PRODUCE NO INCOME.   Excellent point  !

Solve : The Freedom to Cheat and Steal.?

Answer»

Hey,  this is  off TOPIC.
The Internet makes it easy to Cheat and Steal. Some of these even claim they have the Freedom to do just that.
Here is a link I believe is credible. It tells of one man's ex[experience with a company that offers Internet 4G service st a fraction of the normal cost. And the even give ;you a phone number.
https://www.engadget.com/2014/01/23/a-year-with-freedompop-how-did-it-go/

About a year ago, I WROTE about FreedomPop's new data service and shortly thereafter signed up for an account. I opted into the Free 500 MB plan, which offers half a gig of data per month, with additional data available at US$20/gigabyte billed in $2 increments.
Scam? FRAUD? Hard to say. He kept the service for a year and reports that it did work. However, the claims made in the advertising are rather extreme.  Please read over the link above and tell me what your opinion about the marketing methods use by that company.           In what way is Freedom Pop cheating or Stealing?  Seems to me, they deliver EXACTLY what they claim to deliver. Thank you, strollin
Granted the service Freedom pop offers is very low cost compared to almost anything else.

The advertising uses the word Free a lot. This leads some simple fold to think it is free. I am that way. When I see the word 'free' I think it must be free.

From the article, one has to pay a deposit of about $28 on the device and thne opt out of the premium plan. The you get a 'free' plan will cost about $8 per month over a time span of one year. Put another way, you pay at the start and ten after taht it will be free if you stay below the 'free' use level.

Only after reading the article above did that become apparent. And it took the author  year to find out. In my way of thinking, you should not have to wait a year to understand what  kind of contract our have.

Must be that my way of thinking is out-of-date. Yet in other areas government regulators come down hard on advertisers that make claims the confuse or do not clearly represent the true cost of a product or service. So maybe the Internet is an exception. On the Internet is is normal to mislead people. Especially if you have a service that is REMARKABLE.  If you  service is outstanding,  go ahead and cheat and steal a little bit. Come to think of it, is that not the the same kind of thinking Microsoft uses?

The Deposit only applies if you get their equipment. If you switch your existing smartphone/device to their service there is no direct cost as far as I can tell.

There are a lot of things I've already found that seem to address the authors problems. It is possible to have access simply cut off when you reach the limit of the free plan, for example.

The service is largely "Freemium". Saying it is false advertising is like saying it's false advertising when a grocery store has a promotion where any customer can get one free steak- saying "it's not really free" because you can't take two steaks seems to miss the point.Geek has had a bee in his bonnet about that Freedom Pop OUTFIT for some time, I think?

Solve : Best routine for backing up multiple machines??

Answer»

Right now I'm manually removing the hard drives and copying the files for backups. This seems like maybe it's not the best solution. We have several licenses for Acronis , but I don't think we want to buy the license for every PC we have here. So I'm looking for opinions on a better way to backup multiple machines.
   Best regards,
      Mike WilsonMacrium Reflect...and Easus to Do both have Free versions...

I've used both and they work well.I second Macrium Reflect. The free edition works awesome with my Windows 7 systems for saving images and cloning drives.

Not sure if the free editions are not suppose to be used for commercial use though. From what you shared it sounds like it might be commercial use vs home use. So to be legal you might have to buy licenses.

In my builds at home I have 2 hard drives in each desktop system, and Macrium Reflect on them. After the build is done, I clone the drives and then DISCONNECT the master drive of power. Then later when I need to make the system like new again i will connect the master drive and copy that image to the non-master working drive. With SATA 2 and SATA 3 drives and controllers in my systems its fast for drives that only have about 100GB to clone on a pair of 500GB HDDs etc. Less than 45 minutes, but a manual process.

Years ago I use to have Enterprise Norton GHOST which allowed you to tell an image to go to multiple systems at the same time over a network and that worked great, but slammed the network with image data TRANSFER for a few hours back when I maintained a computer lab for a company that did internal training and wanted the systems wiped clean to clean build after each group of students passed through the training. Here is more info on the Ghost Option I used that my employer purchased that allowed you to image multiple systems at the same time. They have newer software these days that does this from Symantec. This article is 17 years old, but this is what I used. http://windowsitpro.com/systems-management/norton-ghost-60-enterprise-edition

More info here on Norton Ghost Multicasting Image Server: https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.TECH106806.html

Clonezilla is a free method of cloning, where you dont have to worry about LICENSING, BUT.... I havent had the best of luck with it. I have run into problems with its use to where images created are junk. Yet others have had success with it. Its been a few years since I messed with Clonezilla and maybe its gotten better. But its a free alternative if you want to clone drive to drive, but its a manual process and not as easy as Macrium Reflect etc. As well as when using it, verify that the image clone is a success and not a partial clone etc. Set the freshly imaged to drive as the active drive and see if it will run properly the same as the master drive that it was imaged from vs assuming that the process was a success. I ran into drives that after clonezilla either didnt boot or if they did boot it was as if there was corruption or data missing required by Windows to operate. Clonezilla should really be reworked it it hasnt already been to make it more user friendly and less prone to failure in the cloning process.

Lastly to mention is use of a physical stand alone hard drive duplicator. I picked one up for $40 that you can place master drive with data on it into slot A and another drive into slot B. You press and hold a button and then it starts the process of copying all of A to B. When done it shows a LED complete light. Simply power it off take the drive and install it into laptop or desktop PC and boot and run off that drive without any problems. However if hardware cloning mismatches capacity drives you might want to go in and expand the partition for C: etc to use all available space if say the master drive is 500GB and the drive taking the image is 1TB, otherwise 500GB of the drive will be unpartitioned unused space. I use this device mainly for cloning SATA Laptop 2.5" drives as for laptops I have dont support 2 hard drives installed at the same time to clone direct drive to drive, and over USB I had troubles cloning drive to drive, yet over USB I can restore a system from image file.

This Hard Drive Duplicator doesnt require software licensing, however you do have to worry about Windows Keys as for you dont want 10 of the same make/model computer running from same clone process all on the same Windows Key.  Seen it done and while each system does have its unique key for same version of Windows as running from clone with same key. Its kind of a grey area with licensing and systems can get flagged as having a pirated key etc if microsoft detects multiples of same key in use.  Clonezilla gave me nightmares...but that's just my personal experience...

Also to your point...no matter which app is used if you get impatient and don't wanna waste time verifying images created yer in for a nightmare...just sayin.  We have Clonezilla ans Easus at work on an old laptop the engineer left. I will get them and start messing around with them. I think I need to mess around with Norton Ghost too because we have tons of machines that are on MSDOS. I'm gonna get Macrium Reflect as well. Thanks for the replies. I haven't really messed around with backups much especially on a large scale for a manufacturing plant. I'm learning as I go , and I appreciate you guys taking the time to lend advice!

Patio - I can't be impatient and make mistakes with this stuff. If I screw one of these up and a machine goes down and I don't have a valid backup I'm in deep *&^(. Haha...

Speaking of which... I have two old pcs set up to run these hard drives once backed up. I have one for a IDE and one for a SATA setup. I'm also trying to figure out how to setup dosbox to run dos programs and setting up virtual machines to test. Anyone think having two different computers setup is wasting time?

Solve : Act now to save net neutrality and stop widespread throttling, blocking, censors?

Answer»

Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, Medium all raised to support “Day of action to Save Net Neutrality”. We should ALSO support the idea and become the part of the bigger picture.

As a user, you want complete access to every sort of applications and websites on the Internet. You want to use your rights of freedom of speech on the Internet without fearing any abrupt shutdown by your ISP. You also want a fast, yet consistent Internet experience.

Without Net Neutrality, ISPs would be able to block content and speech they don’t like, reject apps that COMPETE with their own offerings, and prioritize Web traffic (reserving the fastest loading speeds for the highest BIDDERS and sticking everyone ELSE with the slowest).

All of us needs to raise our VOICE against FCC, we need to have our voice and thoughts raised online. Why there should be an online restriction as all need to stand with the concept of Net Neutrality.

Solve : Gmail Hacked any solution?

Answer»

So, one of my friend's gmail account was hacked. Dont know how that hacker did it but that good for nothing chickenwuss has now added the security layer like phone verification as well.

What can i do to recover that account. Is there some gmail support number so that I can talk to. I have few infos like the activities that my friend performed through his account. Like where he signed up and send mails and what was his previous recover email and phone numbers.

Any help or suggestion is highly appreciated...I cant go there from here because I dont want to mess up my gmail account, but I'd start with making contact with google and go from there. I would check any and all systems and devices that the gmail was accessed from for keyloggers and malware/virus's as well as the most common way that ACCOUNTS are stolen are by WEAK security reset info.

Such as whats your favorite color and what is your mothers maiden name is probably 2 of the worst security reset questions out there. The color one being the absolute worse due to dictionary attack methods and a short list of the most basic of colors.

On security reset questions I find it best to use answers that have ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the QUESTION. Such as ...

Q.  What is your favorite musical instrument?

A.   FriedClams

No hacker in the WORLD would ever come up with that because they are too busy hitting it with a dictionary attack of different instruments.

https://accounts.google.com/signin/recoveryContact GMail...

I take all these "hacked" stories with a grain of salt...
If it indeed it was "hacked" it's someone who knows her well and knows personal data so i'd advise her to change all her personal accounts...

PS...that ain't "hackin".

Solve : Replacing capacitors?

Answer»

Hello
Is it healthy to replace a 100uf400v capacitor with 68uf400v capacitor?Simple answer, No.
Do you hae a reson to make such a change?
If this is part of a critical assembly you must use the same value.
If this is only a classroomexperiment,  then you might be able to do it.
First of all 400V Caps have quite a bite to them if you touch one that is charged with more than about 90 volts... Anything above 48 volts you might feel depending on how moist your fingers are.

Secondly you want to stick with the same value capacitor and same type. *Removed info on ways to make values with multiples of CAPACITORS* Avoid doing that at all costs its too dangerous especially with the circuit your messing with which is probably a power supply or a flash for a camera which uses capacitors like this.

Whenever I work around high voltage capacitors, I avoid touching the PCB and any traces, and I take a digital multimeter to them. If a multimeter isnt available, with power unplugged I have shorted them with a screw driver before after the device hasnt been plugged into a battery source or outlet for about 10 minutes to give it time to drain. Not all capacitors drain out quickly and so I short them with a insulated screw driver between their 2 legs only and not to anything else, and usually get a small spark where it might still have a charge and sometimes nothing so it drained safely. You reintroduce the screw driver to short the capacitor until sparking stops and its drained out as for your reaction might be to jump back if it sparks and that might be only a partial drain time from momentary short.

BE VERY CAREFUL WITH THIS CIRCUIT IF YOU MUST FIX IT

The correct component with Radio Shack gone can be acquired online through Mouser, Digikey, or another source. You also want to look for the temperature rating on that capacitor such as 85C and match that too.

Quote

The typical temperature range for aluminum electrolytic capacitors is –40 ºC to 85 ºC or 105 ºC. Capacitance varies about +5% –40% over the range with the capacitance loss all at cold temperatures. Capacitors rated –55 ºC generally only have –10% to –20% capacitance loss at –40 ºC.

One suggestion I have is ..... Its likely safer to just buy a new of whatever this capacitor goes to as for the risk of injury or death by electrocution or fire is present.  -Some circuits have a drain resistor which will effectively drain the capacitor when there is no input power. Others don't. Shorting the two connections before fiddling with it is a reasonable PRACTICE either way.

-When replacing capacitors you can use a capacitor of a higher capacitance, but you'll want the same voltage and a temperature range that is either the same or wider than the original part.

-400V is pretty much only found in Switched Mode Power Supplies. Are you trying to repair a power supply? Don't. Even if the cap has failed, it's unlikely that it is the only FAILURE point. replacing it would likely just blow the replacement as the original was likely to have failed due to another component failing first; which may be from another component, and so on. Repairing components like that requires either a lot of trial and error (and a lot of busted replacements) or a level of expertise that would mean diagnosing the circuit via circuit diagrams; and frankly somebody with that ability wouldn't be asking if you can replace one cap with another of lower capacitance. Quote from: DaveLembke on June 29, 2017, 03:59:30 PM
I short them with a insulated screw driver between their 2 legs only and not to anything else, and usually get a small spark where it might still have a charge and sometimes nothing so it drained safely.
Use eye protection when discharging capacitors STORING large amounts of energy. Better stil, make a probe with a 1 megohm resistor. I made one for colour TV CRTs.  I once shorted the capacitor in a small, consumer-grade electronic flash meant to fit on the hot shoe of an SLR camera. It was a 400 uF 350 V electrolytic. It hadn't been been used for weeks. There was a bright flash, and a sound like a pistol shot. A fair amount of smoke. The blade tip of the screwdriver was half melted away. Looked like it had been bitten off. Vapourised and melted steel had flown a foot or so on the bench, shown by burn marks.

If anyone is interested, the amount of energy in Joules (or Watt-seconds if you prefer) stored in a fully charged capacitor is GIVEN by 0.5 x (CV squared). In the brackets that's C in farads multiplied by the square of the voltage!!! So as the voltage gets higher the stored power increases exponentially. Around 10 to 50 Joules in a typical flash capacitor*. If you discharge it in a few millseconds that's a lot of Watts in the flesh of your hand or across your heart. Even more at the tip of my screwdriver!

*Tasers deliver around half a Joule per pulse, Most of those used by law enforcement are slightly less, around 0.3 J.

Also, capacitors can 'recover' after being discharged a first time, so do it again after a few minutes.

Solve : Cpu fan error. Need help?

Answer»

Hi may I ask how do I resolve this?

I checked the cpu fan is running properly. Even remove it to clean and install back.

Normal web surfing WORKS ok.

But when I run games like D3 or sc2, system will hang adter sometime. (I assume is due to overheat)

Thanks in advance!Sounds like the fan speed might not be up to PAR. Something like a dragging bearing might be slowing it down. I'd replace it with new.

BTW ... where do you see this FAN error as for only servers that have FAN Fault indicators will keep running with a fan that is not up to par. On most systems a fan failure is indicated by the system shutting itself off unexpectedly or after so many seconds of INITIAL power on in which the tach SIGNAL isnt detected and it protects itself by a hard shutdown.

A slow moving CPU fan might be just fast enough to keep the watchdog circuit satisfied that a fan is present and working to keep a system running without a hard shutdown, ... but fall behind in cooling due to lack of AIRFLOW from slow moving fan.

Solve : Suggestion for a weather website without clickbait that loads fast??

Answer»

Was wondering if anyone knew of any good weather websites for looking at radar and other info quickly as for I have had it with www.weather.com which has become a bloated mess of lag and click bait. Looking online to see if the problem was at my END, the problem seems to be clearly an issue with the website.

I have 20mbps / 5mbps bandwidth and between a AMD Athlon II x4 620 2.6Ghz and a AMD FX-8350 4.0Ghz systems the lag is about the same. On a older Core Duo 1.6Ghz Laptop with 2GB RAM, the site is even slower to load so they have script bloat going on too.

Ran www.speedtest.net and thats where I verified my internet connection speed. YEARS ago it never use to be this bad but its gotten worse ever since they added click bait to the site.

I watched my CPU monitor on all 3 systems and I didnt see any unusual CPU use such as a single core of many getting pegged to 100% etc, so I dont believe its at my end. Online complaints for the same thing the only suggestions I see is instead of going to www.weather.com to install an app for weather. I dont want to install any apps. They already have the annoying weather bug which I installed years ago and uninstalled it because it was acting like spyware.

Here is a site with many like myself not happy with the weather website. https://www.sitejabber.com/reviews/www.weather.comWeatherUnderground...simply the best.cool will check that out thanks  Minimal ads...once they are unchecked they are gone...

You can SET multi weather locations to check...which is alo a NICE travel feature...

Tell 'em patio sent ya...WU is a perfect replacement. Thanks Man!

Much faster load times, less clutter, better features.  Not a website, but for quite some time I used an add-in for Firefox, ForecastFox, which effectively showed weather information in the status bar/toolbar. It uses Accuweather.com via an API I believe.

There are also ways to do it with [ulr=https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/heyscriptingguy/2010/11/07/use-powershell-to-retrieve-a-weather-forecast/]Powershell[/URL].

of course as I mentioned these aren't websites, but I think they also sidestep the issue with ads and such, as well as loading fast, since they use the APIs which only really give weather information, rather than stylesheets and formatting and images and such as with the standard websites.

Solve : This is about Moore's law.?

Answer»

In the electronics industry people sometime quote Moore's law as if it was a solid principle of atomic physics. Well it's not really about atomic physics, rather it is about the growing rate of electronic micro chip technology.

Actually, all areas of technology are growing at a rate faster than what you might imagine. Certain parts of modern technology have not developed as fast as they should have for various reasons. One factor being the marketplace and the presence of large commercial interests who do not want radical change in technology.

Any kind of rapid sequential growth might be termed a form of exponential or geometric growth. This is similar to having a bank account where the interest you receive goes back into the account and added to the principal. Doing so, it's possible to double your original investment within a number of years. Depending on the interest rate, you might double your investment in a period of about 15 years or so. Most people understand how that works.

Now what made Moore's law so noteworthy is that he proposed the doubling would OCCUR in just 18 months. Of course, that kind of growth does catch your attention and it tends to disrupt whatever technology already existed. Often times the idea is applied to lithography as used to produce computer chips. In this case lithography means a photographic process where a silicon wafer can be etched and exposed to different materials to build transistors on the basic silicon chip. This is a form of photography where an intense light shines through a negative image that is focused down to the silicon wafer. Thus it is possible to make transistors and interconnections that are extremely small.

Electronic logic does not require any specific size, at least at the moment. Even transistors made extremely small are still functional and perform logic. So the whole idea was to reduce everything in size to reduce the costs and reduce power consumption.

A benefit from smaller feature size is higher-speed. So as to improve the yield from the silicon foundry, you also increase the speed of the chips and reduce the overall cost.

Now then, why are some saying that Moore's law is coming to its end? Well, there is a principle called diminishing returns. This is usually cited in economic articles. But the idea could apply to almost any area where there is rapid growth followed by a LEVELING off.

Another example is an oil well. Somebody drills an l oil well and goes through a lot of effort to try to get the oil well to yield. Then one day the oil will starts improving its yield, more and more oil comes out faster and faster. It is on a geometric expansion. Sad to say, oil wells to eventually dry up and the period of expansion terminates and then the oil well produces less and less until eventually it is not profitable.

Now back to the subject of electronic chips and silicon foundries and lithography. There is a limit as to how small you can make  an etching  on a silicon chip using conventional photographic techniques. You get to a point where the light wave used must be extremely short and becomes difficult to focus. When you get to that point you start running out of tricks and techniques to make the etchings smaller and smaller.

So what about going to x-ray technology and the use of electron technology to make etchings? Well, it's not really the same as optical light. Try to control and electron beam and focusing it into a small area and etch something on a silicon surface is not quite as easy as it is with photographic techniques. In fact, the electron voltages can be so high that they become destructive and that's not really what you want. So it would seem that there is an up word limit as to how far you can go with electronic technology as far as making computer chips smaller and smaller.

Not necessarily so. There are other ways to make things smaller and smaller that have not been fully exploited. For one thing, there is the concept of building things in a three-dimensional array instead of using a two-dimensional surface to etch electronic circuits. True 3-D technology is not yet with this when it comes to making computer chips. But if some new breakthrough should come that makes it possible to build computer chips in three dimensions, then Moore's law may continue.

So what is the actual limit of how small you can make a transistor ? Some researchers believe it's possible to make an effective transistor gate down at the molecular level. Thus a transistor might actually be a few molecules tied together. As for me, that's beyond my ability to comprehend. So I am not qualified to say that it's impossible.

Anyhow, I don't believe that Moore's law has it come to its limit if you take a broader view of what it means. The broader view is it means we can keep on expanding our technology in the foreseeable future.

What do you think?

Thanks for the compliment.
Dictation,  patio.
Red carefully and find my TELLTALE grimmer grammar kinks,
 - which is my proof of authorship.   I've seen tons of your dictation...this is not 1 of those...So I am getting better! That makes me feel good.

I have been spending almost a week or so going over some of the stuff out there about the slowdown of the industry. Because of market things, the industry might slow down, but raw research and development are still very healthy.

I did not copy and paste anything. It was from what I remember and and from my own musings. After the dictation, I still had to do some proof reading and still there are a few things that did not come out the way I was thinking at the time.

Here is a link that gives a mature look at the whole idea of how chip technology keeps on growing despite some limitations that Intel has recently found. I found this article after I did my dictation.

https://www.burrus.com/2017/03/new-moores-law-put-chips-whats-possible/

The author is Daniel Burrus, who has been in the Silicon Valley for a long time. Here is part of what he says:

But to my mind, the purported phoenix like rise from the ashes of one of technology’s best-known principles really misses the mark so far as anticipatory thinking is concerned. We NEED to be asking more pertinent questions and looking at bigger issues that COMMAND greater attention.

Wish I could have said that.  Then you are in fact improving...keep it up.

Solve : Nixie Tube Creation - Pretty Cool. More work than I ever expected?

Answer»

Found a cool video of this guy who created a MODERN nixie TUBE business. And he shows all the STEPS INVOLVED in making the tubes and testing in the end.

I never knew how involved it was to make these.

Solve : Motion Triggered Camera Security software?

Answer»

I got some IP Security/webcams as well as USB webcams and was thinking about setting them up around my home, but instead of recording hours and hours of nonsense, I want to only record when motion is detected.

I am trying to avoid buying an all in one system because they are pricey and looking on google search there are all sorts of free software options out there, however some of them I am unsure if I want to use them or not because I dont want broadcasting out over the web. I really want the network traffic to only reside on my local LAN and not bounce off some server somewhere that hosts a service. So these IP cameras would be running on their own dedicated network isolated from the internet is my preference! And I already have all the hardware to make that happen.

I dont need to look remotely to check on things, so offline local isolated network is what i am interested in.

So I figured I'd check here to see if anyone has any suggestions on FREE or Low Cost software that will work with either USB or IP based web cams to take one of my older laptops for example and tuck it away hidden somewhere and have it always on the look out for motion at multiple cameras. But to not record anything until motion is detected and then stop recording. Also if it has a date/time stamp in lower corner of window that would help too.

One that I checked up on is https://www.ispyconnect.com/   ... BUT ... I dont want to have to authenticate over the internet to a provider to make this work. I dont want to have to worry about my security system being used inversely by people wanting to spy on my home etc, so thats why I want to have it isolated from the internet.

Burglaries are on the rise in my area and I dont want to be a victim that has no clue who they were and when they hit. I cant stop from a break in, but maybe I can get pictures or video footage of them which can be used to bust them and get my stuff back. I have had stuff stolen from my barn and one of the cameras will be going out there. Someone stole a pricey LIGHT weight mountain bike and a set of TOOLS disappeared taking a loss of about $400.  Meth and Heroin addicts are on the rise in my area and its getting worse and not any better. Out in the main town there are pan handlers that are taking shifts begging for money. My wife felt bad for one guy and bought him Mc Donalds, he told her "I dont need Mc Donalds... I need Money!!! And he tossed the bag of food on the ground" And that upset her pretty badly because all he had to do is say thank you and toss it into the trash after she drove off if he only needed money for drugs or whatever and not make her heart sink that she was being nice and was nice to a bad person.  Across the river there is a place called Shady Lawn Motel and its constantly busted for drugs and prostitution and other crimes. The people cross the river from VT to NH and beg for money and its their career to beg for drug money. They moved into the area a few years ago and its getting worse. I made a statement to the guy the one day that there are all sorts of jobs available other than standing on a corner preying on people who feel bad for you. I said your capable of standing for 8 hours in the heat on a corner, then go get a real job!.  There was a law passed to put a stop to it and the local cops haven't enforced it. But they have been tracking these people back to the motel in VT and busting the people on drug charges etc.  Quote

Is this the resewn for your project?
What is your problem with "ecording hours and hours of nonsense" as compared to a hard to solve puzzle.
You can process the video files later to compress the files to reduce redundant  frames in the video stream. You can get reduction in file size by a ration over100.
Also, you may wish to destroy all video after 20 days.

Well ... the reason why i dont want to record a room or outdoor setting that nothing happens in it for hours and hours, is because it seems kind of lazy and why make more work for myself when something does happen I now then have to endure fast forwarding and staring at the screen waiting for the moment that something happens to stop it and play it at normal speed to then observe. Lazy as in there are ways to have software detect when movement happens when pixels change a certain way to trigger to record then and only then. Additionally, by only recording when motion is detected by the cameras sending the info back to a computer, I could make use of laptops that arent up to par for gaming anymore that are in storage that are otherwise good healthy laptops and that 160GB or 320GB hard drive with the majority of the drive empty other than the OS, wont overflow with video data when only recording when there is activity. So I wont have to buy a 3TB hard drive for example because I wont be wastefully recording nonsense, but only recording when something actually happens.

Years ago a friend of mine in IT had some software that came with his webcam that was USB and he had it set up on his desk to only record when motion was detected to then record until the pixels went back to solid background with nothing happening in view. He was able to figure out who was stealing his chocolates from his desk. It was a cleaning company contracted worker that cleaned nights. They were snooping in desks and taking stuff such as pocket change, stationary post it note pads, and candy. He didnt have to endure hours and hours of watching nothing happening to then stop the video to play at normal speed when the action did happen. The days of recording non stop to me just seems like past practice habit. Back before motion detection was affordable when it was set the camera to record non stop among a bunch of magnetic tape VHS etc, that either required a person to swap VHS tapes at timed intervals or was an automatic switch over with a unit that handled multiple tapes and those tapes would then overwrite or be saved for a period of time with new tapes loaded by someone. They might have even had some that were a constant loop in which the length of the tape large enough to record say 12 to 24 hours and not end in a spool type that is the same as the path that 8-track tapes had inside where the take up is the same as the feed reel in an endless loop until the tape is eaten.

Lastly... I can check the security footage quickly if only motion events are recorded and not have to fast forward each time I want to take a look at what happened outside the home while we were away, such as,.... did any strange vehicles visit and are they scoping out the home to come back at a later point and rob us. People have been reporting strange vehicle activity as these druggy burglars are sort of smart in that they dont just blindly target a residence but they are driving around and making observations and likely WRITING down in a notebook easy targets that are spotted. One home that was cleaned out with a U-haul, the neighbors thought the people were moving. Their home was on the market with a sign. And a crew of crooks came in knowing that the owners were away because they did their homework, and cleaned the home out and drove off and the neighbors didnt call police and thought the home sold and they were moving out. Another home a neighbor spotted a car with out of state plates parked unusually with some people inside a few nights but didnt think anything of it, then 2 days later a few homes of people who worked nights were robbed a few towns over. This winter a jeep was going around with a plow and PULLED into peoples driveways and looked like it was a HIRED plow truck at night, another occupant would get out and sneak up to the house and with the noise of the plow scraping on the driveway the breaking of the window of a door to gain entry was hidden among the noise.  The jeep would leave and come back after 15 minutes and the other guy would get back in and they would drive off with stuff the guy grabbed while the other guy was driving around for 15 minutes. Which was a very unusual team of burglars. They got busted and it was found out that they both were drug addicts and needed to steal to pay for it, and they came up with this plan to go out nights that an inch or so of snow fell and plow and let passenger out and then come back later to pick up the passenger and only tire marks and the small pile of snow from the plow left behind. They also did their homework and knew which residents to hit that didnt have dogs and weren't there nights because they all worked graveyard shift. The way they got busted is that they hit too many houses doing the same thing, and so neighbors sharing with cops that the night of the burglary and unusual jeep plowed the driveway, lead to the police being able to narrow it down pretty quickly because few jeeps have plows to plow, if it was a truck with a plow on it it would have been just about anyone, so many people in New England have plows on their trucks... but very very few have them on jeeps, but the police knew to look for a jeep with a plow on it and so they stopped a jeep with a plow and searched the vehicle and found a boat load of drugs and a few stolen items in glove compartment which pieced these idiots back to the crimes.

Solve : Scrubbing Used Drives Clean - HP Restore Partitions dont allow removal?

Answer» GOT a pile of hard drives given to me from a friend who did a bunch of HDD to SSD conversions for people and had no use for 80GB to 320GB in capacity HDD's and a couple of the drives have a HP Recovery Partition that I cant delete with Windows. Windows 7 64-bit is what I am using with a SATA external to USB docking unit. Most of the drives are healthy according to crystaldiskinfo and I was able to wipe out peoples data and windows etc off of them, dump the partitions and create one new partition and format them, however there are 2 drives that came out of HP laptops that have a HP Restore Partition and in Disk Management of Windows 7 64-bit where you can normally delete partitions it only gives an option for HELP when right-clicking on the partition.

Was wondering how these partitions are protected from being deleted, and if I need to use a tool to wipe the partitions or if I should just use a Linux system to try to delete these protected system recovery partitions with that?Linux should do it...Easus Partition Manager will as well.Cool Thanks

Any idea what tool or software HP is using to protect a partition from being wiped?Partitions can be marked protected via EFI. Windows sometimes creates some of these partitions during installation, and of course recovery/restore partitions almost ALWAYS get marked as protected as well. Disk Management won't allow those volumes to be interacted with. GNU Partition Tool probably wouldn't care.

Within windows you can also use the command line equivalent to Disk Management, Diskpart, and use the "CLEAN" command (with the correct drive selected! For the love lf all things!) to completely wipe all partitions from a drive, including any protected partitions. Quote

    Yeah I will be VERY CAREFUL ... but good to share in case someone else runs with this info shared to double or triple check before running it. Nuking data isnt a good thing if unintentional.  Thanks for the ADDITIONAL info BC
