Solve : Finding the Best Way to Present Data/Selecting Interesting Graphs? |
Answer» I don't need HELP on how to make graphs so much as I always struggle, when going through lots of data, how to tease out the key pieces of info and put together just the right graph(ic) to make it obvious to everyone who isn't a data geek. (I think the New York Times does a great job of this, and Business Week often does, as well. I would say USA Today does NOT - they just make fancy bar charts and pie graphs, for the most part). |

Solve : An Amazon Prime Price Rise would help Netflix? |
Answer» Not exactly earth shaking news. An Amazon Prime price bump means fist pumps at NetflixYeah, a bit complicated. Quote Online video subscribers are a price-sensitive bunch. Although the average cost for a pay-TV subscription like cable in the US floats around $100 and gets tapped higher by a few percentage points every year, services like Netflix have a difficult time NUDGING their relatively low prices higher.http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57618118-93/an-amazon-prime-price-bump-means-fist-pumps-at-netflix/ Maybe I should buy an antenna and go back to watching local TV. Quote Maybe I should buy an antenna and go back to watching local TV In my area there use to be 3 channels on the airwaves 1 x VHF Channel 3 and 2 x UHF 31, and 41 in New Hampshire. Now its down to 1 channel. If your in an area that still has VHF or UHF stations that havent gone 100% digital, your good, but if I were to hook up a TV back to antenna i'd be lucky to pick up the 1 and only channel left in my area which use to have some snow to its quality even with a good antenna. When I moved out on my own in 1994 I went about a year with just 3 channels and the VCR was used heavily to record shows that were on either when I was sleeping or working, as for with just 3 channels there is not much choice in CONTENT to watch, so the VCR was a ways to compress all the content I wanted to watch to a tape, but still the same content even though different episodes got old. In 1995 I landed a good job to have extra money vs living paycheck to paycheck and got cable TV. Last year I severed the tie with cable TV and went to streaming only to save money due to no more extra income to burn and I'd go weeks without turning the TV on, and my family also were no longer watching cable TV, but instead streaming everything. So here we are in 2014 streaming everything to the TV or Computers now unless playing a DVD or BluRay or dusting off the ancient VCR to play older movies. My biggest annoyance with the streaming was that it soon had many commercials like cable TV, but soon I found ad-block plus and was able to avoid wasted time watching ( or not so much watching, but listening for the audio to change back to the show to look back to the display ) with the 8th same commercial cutting in every 6 minutes of a show. For the paid netflix streaming service we are happy with, however netflix sometimes gets hammered with traffic and even though we have plenty of bandwidth one show you want to watch streaming will buffer every 30 seconds while if you switch to a less popular show or movie to watch you can watch it with no buffering interruptions. Ad-Block Plus doesnt seem to block the free hulu, but it does block ads on youtube and crackle which is nice. As far as Amazon goes, I buy products through their site, but I dont use their streaming services. I checked them out a ways back and didnt see anything good that was worth paying to watch. Maybe they have added more shows and movies to make it worth paying money, but... if you pay for Amazon, Hulu Plus, Netflix, and others soon your bills add up to the price of cable TV and there is no more savings. The worst that can become of this price increase on Amazons part would be if there was a cooperation between all the online streaming identities to all raise their prices to pry more cash from everyones pockets. Generally its a good thing to have competition to avoid a monopoly, since one will be cheaper than the other to fight for customer base, but if they all strategically raised their prices then there is no longer a cheap way out to watch streaming content. Crackle.com is my favorite free streaming site out there. I havent found any others that are as good as crackle that are free. |

Solve : Question about copyright date on CPU mismatched to release date by 3 years? |
Answer» Anyone know why a CPU released on April 28, 2008 would have a copyright of 2005? although that was when AMD and iNtel were spending all their time in a court of law... What were they fighting about? I must have missed this case Year 2005 was the lawsuit. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMD_v._Intel Quote AMD launched the lawsuit against its rival Intel, the WORLD's leading microprocessor manufacturer. AMD has claimed that Intel engaged in unfair competition by offering rebates to Japanese PC manufacturers who AGREED to eliminate or LIMIT purchases of MICROPROCESSORS made by AMD or a smaller manufacturer, Transmeta.[1]Thanks for link geek. Didnt think it would have its own wiki of AMD vs INTEL..LOL Quote from: DaveLembke on February 27, 2014, 06:36:48 PM Anyone know why a CPU released on April 28, 2008 would have a copyright of 2005?Because it wasn't released in 2008. That CPU looks to be an Athlon 64, based on googling the first set of numbers. They were released in 2005. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athlon_64_X2 Not sure why it's not listed in the list of Processors. I think it is showing the release date of the final stepping. Hmm ... interesting with conflicting info between 2 links here. I also own a system with the AMD 4850e 2.5Ghz that I bought brand new in the spring of 2008 and it shows a release date on the wiki of March 5, 2008 and I built this system up with tax refund money that year in late April 2008. Was pretty sure it was a newly released CPU when I bought that dual-core and not just a new in box but 3 year old CPU. This system was put on the wayside as an alt box when I was given the quadcore Athlon II x4 620 2.6Ghz for free from a friend which I immediately swapped out the weaker Sempron x2 2200 ( 2.0Ghz ) on my prior alt slower box to this quadcore to become my primary gaming box, since why run on less for gaming when you have a more powerful system to use. But anyways not really that important I guess, its just a date on a CPU that is site unseen anyways when heatsink applied and no computer problems. I guess the date is in reference to the AMD 64 x2 program that started in 2005/2006 from your link, although time frames are mismatched between the 2 links both at wiki. Thanks for everyones input on this question. |

Solve : Dell Inspiron 3847? |
Answer» My father bought me this computer from dell last weekend. I got it on friday. A friend who knows more about computers then I do. moved my power supply (500W) and my graphics card (Nividia geforce gts 250) from my four year old E-machine to the dell computer. He TURNED on the computer and the screen went to sleep and would not operate. When he plugged the screen into the built in VGA connection the screen came on and there was a message about the intergrated card being disabled and saying to plug it into the graphics card. We put the power supply and card back into the E-machine and the same thing happened. So I THOUGHT it happened cause the card got broken sometime after taking it out of the E-machine. So I went and bought a brand new card (Radeon R7 250 core edition), When we put it in the dell computer once again the monitor went to sleep and would not respond. We put the power supply back into the E-machine and put the card into it hooked up the monitor and the monitor WORKED. I called Dell Tech Support twice the next day, The second time the Tech ended up hanging up on me. I told them the computer was defective they told me only certain cards are compatible with it. I asked which ones, They ended up EVENTUALLY telling me Nividia geforce gt 625 and 635 are two that were tested by dell and worked with the computer. Both are OEM and not sold in any computer store near me and going by the specs on them they would not do me any good. I play the sims 3 and need a card that will handle the graphics of the game. |

Solve : The Risk of Running Windows XP Forever.? |
Answer» The Risk of Running Windows XP Forever. ... after April 8, 2014, organizations that continue to run Windows XP won’t have this advantage over attackers any longer. The very first month that Microsoft releases security updates for supported versions of Windows, attackers will reverse engineer those updates, find the vulnerabilities and test Windows XP to see if it shares those vulnerabilities. If it does, attackers will attempt to develop exploit code that can take advantage of those vulnerabilities on Windows XP. Since a security update will never become available for Windows XP to address these vulnerabilities, Windows XP will essentially have a “zero day” vulnerability forever. How often could this scenario occur? Between July 2012 and July 2013 Windows XP was an affected product in 45 Microsoft security bulletins, of which 30 also affected Windows 7 and Windows 8.Source: http://blogs.technet.com/b/security/archive/2013/08/15/the-risk-of-running-windows-xp-after-support-ends.aspx Now the problem here is that other people are using the same kind of logic. It is as if only Microsoft can stop virus attacks, therefore all must update on the path MS says we must follow. Did it sever occur to any that other organizations c an offer XP users some reasonable level of security? What do you say? For me it's not even the fact that XP is full of security holes - XP is 12 years old, why people still insist on using it is beyond me! All that will happen to those people is that software developers will just drop support for XP. For example, IE8 is the newest version of IE to run on XP, web application developers LIKE me have a dreadful job trying to make our stuff work in IE8 - Nowadays my rule is that my stuff must work in IE8, but I don't care how it looks as it's simply not worth supporting XP users. This will be the same down the line when Firefox and Google Chrome/Chromium drop support for XP. Continuing to support XP holds development back massively, software developers struggle to take advantage of all of the new features of Windows Vista/7/8 if they have to support XP. Quote It is as if only Microsoft can stop virus attacks, therefore all must update on the path MS says we must follow.Sure antivirus can still work on XP, but it's only Microsoft that can patch underlying vulnerabilities in the core operating system, with this not happening, people will be open to security issues no matter what antivirus they are running. Quote Did it sever occur to any that other organizations c an offer XP users some reasonable level of security?Doubt this will continue for long, I can see antivirus companies also dropping support for XP in their products- Why should they spend time and money supporting users who are simply too stubborn to move to something up-to-date?XP is still ok to use online, but depending on its use though!!! I wouldnt be using XP or any older Windows OS for anything (high risk) such as paying bills, checking banking info, making online PURCHASES with credit cards, or checking primary e-mail etc. I have a Toshiba Netbook with an Intel Atom 1.66Ghz and 2GB 667Mhz DDR2 RAM with 60GB OCZ SSD that is running Windows XP Home SP3. While I once used this netbook for more important (higher risk) online communications such as all listed above. I have since replaced the (higher risk) data communications with a trusted Windows 7 system that is only used for that purpose. I don't use my gaming system or other system that I download games and try all sorts of software on etc as for this system is running with the risk that something could slip into it under the radar of AV and Malwarebytes scans, and so its best to be over protective and lower your risk then use the same system that others use as well as yourself use for installing and playing new games or trying new free utilities etc in which one could be a future data security threat. Since I have multiple systems, I can do this. However if its SOMEONE who has just 1 computer and cant afford another to designate it for the sole purpose of only extremely confidential data communications, if they were running XP now and cant buy a new system and want to have a better sense of security they can either switch to Linux OS for free or buy a copy of Windows 7 ( probably 32-bit for systems with "1GB to 3GB RAM" unless they have "4GB or more RAM" to go with 64-bit and make 64-bit worth while) and be covered with security updates. I have gotten Windows 7 32-bit to run on a computer that was a 2002 year model eMachine with Pentium 4 2.00Ghz with 1GB DDR 266Mhz RAM and 60GB IDE HDD, however it was not a smooth upgrade. Intel did not make newer drivers for older Intel 845 GL chipset and so the integrated graphics were stuck at 640x480 with 256 color with Windows 7 32-bit after install. I ended up forcing Windows 7 32-bit Home Premium to take the Intel 845 GL chipset driver which was an XP driver to get the integrated graphics to top out at 1024x768 with 16-bit color. BUT with only 1GB of RAM and the fact that this was an early Pentium 4 which was not HT and not as much cache as the later Pentium 4 CPU's as well as only 2.00 Ghz, it was running Windows 7 32-bit slowly, and there was no such thing as multitasking. BUT... if I had activated this installation ( which I didnt, it was just a test ), I could have fully patched this computer that was 12 years old and been able to go online to higher risk websites and been protected under latest *Reactive Security Threats. ( * Most MS Updates are reactive, and so even if your running Windows 7 or 8 / 8.1 you can still get hit with a newly found vulnerability that has yet to be patched ) Based on my experience of Windows 7 on older hardware, my suggestion is to run it on a system with at least 2GB RAM even though it can run on 1GB. The eMachine computer made in 2002 might have run Windows 7 32-bit better on 2GB of RAM, but the motherboard only supported 1GB RAM maximum 512MB per slot with 2 memory slots. Also the CPU should be 2.66Ghz or faster for the Pentium 4 series CPU's for best results. I haven't tested Windows 7 32-bit on a Celeron CPU from the Pentium 4 era socket 478 or 775 CPU's, but performance would be lesser than a Pentium 4. Ideally I'd suggest an INTEL Core 2 Duo CPU or AMD Athlon64 x2 CPU or better depending on if your running INTEL or AMD. RAM I would suggest at least 2GB for Windows 7 32-bit and at least 4GB for Windows 7 64-bit. I have 2 older systems at are running this era CPU with Windows 7 and they run it very well. Below is the CPU, RAM, and OS of each one. The INTEL is my wifes: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4Ghz with 4MB Cache ( 2 cores ) 3GB DDR2 667Mhz RAM ( 2 x 1GB sticks and 2 x 512MB sticks ) Windows 7 32-bit Home Premium The AMD is my older gaming system: AMD Athlon64 x2 4450B 2.3Ghz with 10% O.C. to 2.53Ghz with 1MB Cache shared between both cores ( 2 cores ) 4GB DDR2 800Mhz RAM ( 2 x 2GB sticks * Maximum supported for motherboard ) Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium ***Also for anyone wanting Windows 7 and has a really old Windows XP machine that would crawl with Windows 7 because it doesnt match up well to the specs I shared.... There are many refurb computers out there for sale for as cheap as $129.99 with free shipping that come preinstalled with Windows 7 32-bit and usually come with 2GB RAM. But these systems are usually Pentium D's or early Core 2 Duo systems and are not rated well for modern heavy graphics games. However some have PCI Express slots so you can add a better GPU via Video Card. So for just about the cost of Windows 7 itself you can get it + the hardware included that may be an upgrade to what you already have which the hardware can be looked at as free with the Windows 7 upgrade at this price tag. I took advantage of a refurb deal like this through Tiger Direct back in 2007 to buy 40 qty HP SFF Desktop Computers loaded with XP Professional on Pentium 4 2.66Ghz CPU's, 512MB RAM, 80GB IDE HDD's, with CD-ROM's for only $109.99 per refurb computer. This was wen XP Pro was still $130 per license. So I upgraded 40 computers for this business to XP Pro and got rid of older Pentium 1, 2, and 3 systems that were running NT4 SP6 and Windows 2000 Pro SP4 and we now had faster systems for free plus bought 40 copies of XP Pro at $20 off per computer. This was easy to sell to the GM of the business. These systems also ran well up until I left the company in July 2009. Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 13, 2014, 03:51:03 PM Now the problem here is that other people are using the same kind of logic. It is as if only Microsoft can stop virus attacks, therefore all must update on the path MS says we must follow. Did it sever occur to any that other organizations c an offer XP users some reasonable level of security? There is a massive confusion about what the lack of security updates will really mean. Some people seem to think it means that XP simply won't get security updates. And, of course- that is correct. What people fail to realize is that once XP stops receiving updates, it will not be necessary for malware authors to look very hard to try to find exploits in XP they can take advantage of- because Microsoft will be delivering exploits right to their doorstep for examination in the form of Vista, 7, and 8 security patches. Once XP is no longer receiving security updates, every single Vista, 7, and 8 security patch is going to be reverse ENGINEERED (as usual) and that information can be used to attack XP. Remember that Vista,7, and 8 are all based on the same codebase as XP and as a result a good number of low-level security issues that turn up in later versions can also affect XP. Therefore every security patch for later versions becomes a likely security exploit for Windows XP, because XP will not be receiving a relevant patch. My favourite part is that there are people that use this as an example of Microsoft's "forced upgrade path". Often this comes from those in the Open Source community. They of course fail to recognize that the equivalent versions of Linux from 2001 have not been supported since 2006 at the latest for Long-term support versions... |

Solve : AT&T Networks Blocking Websites? |
Answer» The title above is from a POST on AT&T Community Forums and one would think that it is real and not just somebody wanting to make trouble. I have copied one post quoted below. AT&T Networks Blocking Websites IP AddressesThe link above GIVES other posts related to this. It is not an isolated case. However, some times it may be the security settings of your browser and not AT&T. To TEST, use another computer with another browser. Personally I had had something that feels like this, but said thing has not been resolved yet. My only guess is that some sites have problems with SSL certification or something like that. Here is something recent that seems like that.Re: [...] massive increase in SSL handshake failures after … It was dismissed as just a troll wanting attention. Solve : Windows 9 and the Future of Windows? |
Answer» The title is from a YouTube video done early this year. The title is from a YouTube video done early this year. As Camerongray said, it's a lot of speculation. "It seems like they won't be doing that for much longer because they are going to be going to windows 9" Absolutely baseless. I can say with some certainty that this guy is making this up. I like how he ends that part with "Possible" as if to basically admit AFTER that everything he had said was basically made up. He has no basis for that which he is saying. Thankfully he covered his *censored* by adding "possibly" and "may have" to pretty much everything- which is about what you would expect when they are making things up in the interest of attracting views. BC, Here is a business idea you might like The is no web site named www.windows9fables.com So, go buy tat name and make money from selling ads on it. If it works, buy me a beer. It's no different to all the other videos that come out before a new release of Windows SHOWING "concepts" which are basically mockups made by the person making the video or found scattered around online, nothing official. For example this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_0FiZeXkMw while you would say that this is a preview of Windows 9, it's merely a SLIGHTLY interactive concept that looks to have been made in something like powerpoint or flash. This is completely non-news. I mean, look at the photos of all the "new" iPhone models coming out and see how they look nothing like the final product. Same deal with all those "leaks" that have come before every other Windows release that end up looking nothing like the final version. Quote BC, Here is a business idea you might like I'm really confused now, what does that have do do with anything? Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 15, 2014, 04:53:00 PM BC, Here is a business idea you might likeI'm not sure what you are trying to say.Me either...Never mind. It was an attempt at humor. If you Google "windows 8 rumors" you find a lot of people saying a lot of nothing. I think one could say that Windows 9 will come after Windows 8. But one can never be sure. Google conspiracy theories then...if you have that much time on your hands... Quote from: patio on March 15, 2014, 07:54:59 PM Google conspiracy theories then...if you have that much time on your hands...Google conspiracy theories ? OK, I am going to find that right now. Maybe Google is doing hard to windows 8. EDIT: Oh No! No good rumors found. Quote From the rumor mill: Windows 9 to hit Beta in May of this year, Release Candidate close to SeptemberAll rumours are based on the shaky premise that Windows 9 is going to be announced at the BUILD CONFERENCE this April. The rumours are of course possible particularly given Microsoft's recent INCREASED cadence and release cycle. However, it is still all speculation, as there has been no announcement, leak, or other information provided from a Microsoft source that confirms any of this information. |

Solve : Windows XP Support Expiration Warning? |
Answer» Just did a reboot of a Windows XP Home SP3 system after some UPDATES and FOUND this pop up MESSAGE center screen. Interesting that MS decided to add this warning in with the recent updates. Interesting that MS decided to add this warning in with the recent updates.I'd use the word responsible. This way Users at LEAST know about the situation. It was installed as a stand-alone update. The update is actually named "End of support notification". Interestingly, MSE also now contains warnings that XP support will end next month. It also always indicates your machine's status as: "Potentially Unprotected". At least the popup message has the checkbox for "Don't show this again", MSE pops up a warning on every boot and I haven't found a way to disable it. |

Solve : Hiding Yourself from being online? |

Cacher mon âne {end sardonic} just a little humor. Quote In general, the forum does not help people hide their on-line pretense. Yet another Geek Classic...Just wanted to share that this port block command instruction method in DD-WRT is not persistent, but can be, and I chose not to make it persistent so that to unblock the port block / cancel the instruction that was added to block port 1119 for all IP's, I simply just need reset the power to the router and it goes back to its original configuration prior to the command that I told the router to run for iptables. *Also for World of Warcraft, you need to log onto the game first before implementing this, since the authentication service of the game client uses port 1119 at the get go to authenticate with battle.net . Once you logon and are at your character screen, then you can implement the port block to 1119, and then select the realm or character you want to play on and you are hidden from view to others who would normally track/see you on battle.net's realID service. The realm you are on however if its the same realm as the other person playing that you are trying to hide from, and they have you on their friends list, they will still see you! So if they are on the same realm as you and you want to hide, you need to play on a different realm on a different character that they are unaware of. The traffic for chat communications / general and trade channels etc and tagging you as active in guild list and friends list may be using port 3724, but you cant kill this port and have the game run. This port seems to be shared with other data which is key to keeping the handshake between the game client and the server. I messed around with shutting off other ports that WoW uses to see what the impact was and the game wont function with the others blocked. So I guess I am fortunate that port 1119 was only used for RealID and Authentication, and that the Authentication is a 1 time handshake requirement, since once you are authenticated, you can sever this port, and your connection thread is handed over to another process that allows for you to navigate between realms and characters of multiple blade servers in data centers hosting the realms around the world. |

Solve : Big rise in Mobile Banking Trojans.? |
Answer» Is that true? That title is based on a report from Kaspersky, a company that sells security software. ... according to the latest study of the mobile malware environment by antivirus major Kaspersky Lab. The security solutions provider's research has revealed that last year there were almost 100,000 new malicious programs targeting mobile gadgets globally, a massive increase from the 40,059 detected in 2012, with the UK among the top-five...The people in the UK do banking on the mobile phone? Don't they know how to write? Who would trust their fiances to a gadget? http://usa.kaspersky.com/about-us/press-center/press-releases/kaspersky-lab-reports-mobile-malware-2013-more-doubles-previous Is that true? Really? Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 03, 2014, 04:56:39 PM How does a Trojan get into a smart phone? The same way it would get into a computer. Or, as the very article you linked explains: Quote Methods used to infect a mobile device include compromising legitimate sites and distributing malware via alternative app STORES and bots (the bots usually self-proliferate by sending out text messages with a malicious link to addresses in the victim’s address book). Quote The people in the UK do banking on the mobile phone?Being able to use smartphones for banking tasks has been possible for several YEARS, and is not UK specific. Quote Don't they know how to write?I'm confused as to what writing has to do with it. Quote Who would trust their fiances to a gadget? What engaged couples do in the bedroom is none of our concern!Viruses on mobile devices have been around a while but they are pretty limited as (at least in the case of Android as that's what I'm familiar with) they can only be installed by the user if they EXPLICIT allow apps that aren't from the official store to be installed and then install a dodgy version, usually through trying to pirate an app. On iOS this is even more difficult as the device would need to be jailbroken. Quote The people in the UK do banking on the mobile phone?Short answer: Yes, Yes, Me. I find it extremely useful being able to do bank related things on my phone LIKE send money to people, check my balance and get money out of ATMs if I don't have my card for some reason. Even if the phone was lost/stolen, the app for my bank still requires codes to enter as well as the lock on the phone and of course I can disable the app/phone online. I don't SEE using this any different to using online banking from my PC? I can't think of the last time I actually phoned or went into a bank other than to pay in physical cash, why? Because doing it online is convenient and saves a lot of time. Besides, I'd trust a computer to do something a lot more than someone in a bank branch - Humans make mistakes, computers don't. All the person in the branch does anyway is enter the data into a computer, and errors can occur at this stage. If I had been able to use online banking several years ago, I doubt I'd have had the issue of where my account had been set up in my middle name instead of my first name which was obviously human error. |

Solve : Omegle,chatroulette.? |
Answer» Im thinking of registering on these web sites. I have heard there is a lot of VIRUS's on these sites? Can anyone advise me if, in there opinion these sites are ok to register on, and use. I have Kaspersky Pure 3.0 for protection on my Windows 8, laptop.Any insite would be helpful. I live alone and thought it would be cool to talk to others in the same boat, and around the world. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.Yes. That SITE is considered safe. Omegle is a free online chat website that allows users to communicate with strangers without registering. The service randomly pairs users in one-on-one chat sessions where they chat anonymously using the handles "You" and "Stranger". The site was created by 18-year-old Leif K-Brooks of Brattleboro, Vermont, and was launched on March 25, 2008.[2][3] Less than a month after its March 2008 launch, Omegle garnered around 150,000 page VIEWS a day,[4] and in March 2009 the site introduced a video conferencing feature. The site now provides a mobile application that lets users chat with strangers from mobile devices.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omegle Also, Chatroulette is an online chat website that pairs random people from around the world together for webcam-based conversations. IMHO neither is something g I would recommend. But others say both safe. (WOT gives both a green light)Both of those sites are safe from a virus perspective, the issue with them lies with CHILD protection as there is no moderation on the site.Thank you Camerongray and Geek for the fast reply. I'm not sure if I will register, but it would be cool to talk with someone from around the world. |

Solve : Old IDE HD Thunderbird Profile? |
Answer» I have a unique problem, I think. made a NEW build and now comes the tedious work of getting things to work as they did on the old pc. I installed a new VERSION of Thunderbird. On my old HD, I would like to copy my profile to the new one...lots of important emails still on it. naturally, the HD is not bootable and I can't get on the internet with it, so i can't do the ususal search in RUN: %applic...etc." I do see the FOLDER though and I did copy the entire folder, but i do not see the Profile folder...is it in that long name with the Default extension? If so, I thought just copying the profile folder would be sufficient and would give u all that u need...I don't want to have duplications... ANYhow is there a way that I can do this? When you install and start thunderbird it will create a default profile, and that is randomly generated. If you copy the profile from elsewhere, the installed version of Thunderbird doesn't know about it, because it uses a different randomly generated name. You need to edit profiles.ini and add the name of the profile. It should be relatively straightforward- just PASTE in the name of the copied folder into the "default" profile section. eg. if the folder you copied is "ze0x03d9.default" you would change the profiles.ini: |

Solve : Wndows Media Player problem? |
Answer» I have an audio book comprising 22 discs that I want to rip to transfer to my MP3 PLAYER. Using Windows Media Player I loaded them in sequence and all seemed to be going well ("ripped to library" and normal ejection after each disc. etc.). After several discs had been ripped I checked the library and found that only 4 was listed. I persevered and after the 12th disc I checked again - no change. I thought that maybe the missing ones had been sent to some other folder, but I can't find them anywhere. I find it odd that they seem to have disappeared - I have ripped books of more that a dozen discs several times with no trouble. I tried "search" with no success - that just brings up the 4 discs that were ok. Advice appreciated about what to check or do next. |

Solve : Creative Labs Sound Blaster 128 CT5801 PCI Card lives on? |
Answer» So I finally got rid of the last daily used Pentium 4 computer in my home. I did some work for a client migrating his data from a Dell Inspiron 530 with Core 2 Duo E4500 2.2Ghz with 2GB RAM running XP to a brand new Core i7 system with Windows 7 64-bit. I remember having to write bat files for each game so the game would load proper drivers for the card...fun stuff Surprised you needed to change it up between games like that. I ended up finding a good configuration to get maximum base memory of around 608k free and everything else loaded into high memory. At one point the system ( 80486 DX4 100Mhz with 8MB RAM) was running with only 590k free and this caused some problems with games that wouldnt run. But once I got the configuration worked out and 608k base memory free with 32k of base memory in use for other features everything was good. There were some games that had to be configured before playing them, but they maintained this info in a data file associated with the EXE file. I think the only time I ran into an issue with my Sound Blaster 16 ISA Card and the config was when I added a 10 megabit 3Com ISA Network Adapter and the IRQ of my Sound Card was conflicting with the NIC at IRQ 10. This was resolved by moving Sound Card to IRQ 11. And the reason why the sound card as not at IRQ 5 is because my 14.4k modem was set to IRQ 5 because I was using COM 1 for Mouse at IRQ 4, and COM 2 for Scientific Calculator tether ( serial link ) at IRQ 3, Trident 2MB Video Card was using IRQ 9, and so I was using all the IRQ's I had available. * I then had to reconfigure these games for IRQ 11 vs 10 for sound. Had I not been in college at the time requiring the Scientific Calculator Serial Tether to COM 2, I could have had my 14.4k modem at COM 2 and IRQ 3, and had my sound card at IRQ 5 which was suggested in the Sound Blaster 16 manual for jumper position, but the 14.4k modem which was also not Plug n Play could not be jumpered any higher than IRQ 5. It all worked, but with no more free IRQ's there was no adding anything else to that 486 computer. I suppose I could have placed the internal modem onto COM 2 or COM 4 for IRQ 3 to share the IRQ 3 with the serial tether, but it would be one device at a time and not both and there were times when I would be working through AOL 2.5 dial-up over 14.4k and need to check my college black board system which was more like a HTML bulletin board and work at the same time printing out plotted graphs with my wide Epson LQ 1050+ Dot Matrix Printer with tractor feed paper etc. Carmaggedon was about the maximum game that system could run back then, and this game had its own setup feature to detect or manually configure the sound card to run with the game. I had to upgrade to a Pentium and more memory to play Quake etc. The 486DX4 100Mhz was a good CPU 20 years ago, but the Pentium's had it beat in performance. I got the 486DX4 100Mhz with a motherboard and 8MB RAM for just $40 off of a friend who upgraded and it was far better than the 386SX 40Mhz I was running prior which was given to me from another person who also upgraded and was looking to give the working motherboard a good home vs tossing it away. And that beat the pants off of the 286 12Mhz I was running prior that I bought in 1993 for $120 used with 40MB Hard Drive..LOL Just curious as to what games were picky requiring special batch files for them? |

Solve : Using cell as hotspot? |
Answer» I live in the country and my internet reception has been getting patchy at best. I'm thinking of getting a cell signal booster and using my cell as a hotspot for my internet. Does anyone have any suggestions about a signal booster. I'm trying to KEEP costs down but want something that will do the job. I've been looking at an Uniden U60 2000 Sq.Ft Cellular Signal Booster on Amazon. Any thoughts about it? Our house is a 2 story and about 1000 sg ft and I only need the internet on the main floor. I would also like to know if I can use my router if I use my cell as a hotspot? THANKS for any suggestions. Some questions. The booster I'm looking at has an antenna on the roof with the booster in the house and the cell signal is strong on the roof.If your local Cell provider says it is OK, go for it. The OP is in an area outside of the dense urban areas where boosters are can cause possible problems with other services. Others READING this should not assume that a Cell Booster is the best choice for general use. Here are some links I found meaningful. http://www.tessco.com/yts/knowledge_center/su/fcc-rules-for-cellular-signal-booster-use.html http://wireless.fcc.gov/signal-boosters/faq.html http://www.ubersignal.com/blog/cell-phone-antenna-booster-guide/ Now the kicker: FCC orders 2M people to power down cell phone signal boosters (Updated) Quote The Federal Communications Commission today enacted a set of rules governing the sale and deployment of wireless signal boosters, devices consumers use to improve cell phone signals. More than 2 million of these devices are in use across the country, and until now consumers who bought them could just turn them on and let them WORK their magic. That is why I recommend the antenna for users in metropolitan areas. Small passive antennas do not require registration. Thanks so much for all the info. As far as I know we don't have to register boosters yet but I will look into it. My cell provider never mentioned anything when I talked to them last week. It's just coming into effect for you guys so we will have a couple of years before it gets here lol. I don't think it would be an issue even if I had to register it because of where we live(in the boonies lol). I just bought a new router last month and was hoping to be able to use it if I do go with the cell hot spot. I have a very limited amount of knowledge on this subject but could I connect my cell to the router with the USB and have wifi? Thanks again for all the help To my knowledge, there is not easy way to tie your cell phone to a router. Unlike Ethernet, USB has its own protocol and usage. Normally a cell phone as a hot spot has a range of about 10 meters, more or less. Of course, you can carry the cell phone around inside your house. Ok thanks for all your help. After learning about hot spots I now find out I can only get 10 gb a month with it. Sometimes living Iin the country has its drawbacks! Thanks again |

Solve : Sony BDP-470 with Media Server & USB External Hard Drive? |
Answer» Posting this here because not much info on google on this. Someone might find it helpful. Notes: So due to this media file type limitation, I may be forced to batch process a bunch of files from one type to a supported type, although I am going to see what format I can go with that is supported for DLNA service play that doesnt kill quality and doesnt cause them to swell up from 800MB to 3.5GB files which the conversion from MPEG4 to MPEG2 would create. I see that Xvid format AVI is claimed to be supported, so i am going to test a few with that. That only doubles their size vs greater than a 4x size increase. Once I get the files set up for the player then I will move forward with testing the free private DLNA servers that Salmon suggested. [recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin] |

Solve : cc'ing emails to myself.? |
Answer» I have 4 computers with 4 email addresses all with the same ISP I would like copies of my sent emails to be cc'd to all computers but windows live mail WONT let me do this. is there a way of doing it. You don't have to use live mail.He did not say he has a live.com email account. He said he is using Windows Live Mail (WLM), an email client from Microsoft. WLM, like other email clients, can be used with any POP or IMAP email account. I have WLM installed on my Win 7 system but have been using Microsoft Outlook 2007 for email. So, I have not tested WLM to see whether I get the same result as topsy99. However, I have tried this with Outlook 2007 and it lets me send, i.e. CC, messages to me. Quote from: topsy99 on February 08, 2014, 07:26:04 PM when I send an email I often have information in the sent email that I want to refer to but often I am miles away so if I could cc to myself I could retrieve the emails and store them indefinitely. You have not responded to my comment about accessing your email accounts via web browser. Why not do that when you are away from the office? I created a gmail account and I cc to that and it forwards to my email . thanks for your solution |
