Solve : Finding the Best Way to Present Data/Selecting Interesting Graphs?

Answer»

I don't need HELP on how to make graphs so much as I always struggle, when going through lots of data, how to tease out the key pieces of info and put together just the right graph(ic) to make it obvious to everyone who isn't a data geek. (I think the New York Times does a great job of this, and Business Week often does, as well. I would say USA Today does NOT - they just make fancy bar charts and pie graphs, for the most part).

So my question is, is there a forum or board or something that anyone knows of, where folks can post sample data or sample graphs, etc., and get suggestions, feedback, and the like?

The only other place I've SEEN is Tableau's forums, but that's more how-to-put-the-graph-together-once-you-know-what-it-should-look-like. I want help figuring out what it should look like, first.

There ought to be a "CocktailNapkin" application!

    THANKS for suggestions.

What software are you using or what software, if any, do you have for creating graphs?  Do you have Microsoft Excel?  If so, have you used it to creates graphs/charts?  If you are using, or could use, Excel, then look at some online tutorials, such as http://spreadsheets.about.com/od/excelcharts/ss/Chart_wiz_step.htm, or visit one or more Excel forums.  I DO use Excel - that's what feeds Tableau - but I'm not asking about software. In fact, this is largely due to the fact that I am so far beyond bored with Excel's standard graphing packages.

I'm more interested in... "If this is the data, what does the 'picture' look like?" In other words, if you can draw it on a cocktail napkin, I can figure out (at least I can find resources who can do it, so same thing, really) how to make the data graph it.

I've been looking at Tufte's stuff, and how places like the New York Times presents info, and it's really clever.

I'd like to appear to be clever.

So, in short, is there a place "like this" but instead of offering advice and counsel, re: computer issues, I can find counsel and advice re: how to present the garbage that comes out of the computer?

Just thought someone here might know of something...

For instance, I have a behavioral survey I've done - where people PICK where they are on a spectrum - and I'd really like some way to present that in a way that tells a compelling story.

So, here's an example of the type of question asked:

Attached is sample data.

And then in Tableau, I can do a sort of "heat map" that shows how prevalant each answer is. Averages aren't the right statistic to use for this type of measure, but I include it because everyone asks, anyway.

Solve : An Amazon Prime Price Rise would help Netflix?

Answer»

Not exactly earth shaking news.
Quote

An Amazon Prime price bump means fist pumps at Netflix
Amazon is considering a Prime rate increase, and it would push the COST higher than Netflix for the first time. That's good news for Netflix, but -- like Prime's combo of services -- it's a LITTLE complicated
Yeah, a bit complicated.

Online video subscribers are a price-sensitive bunch. Although the average cost for a pay-TV subscription like cable in the US floats around $100 and gets tapped higher by a few percentage points every year, services like Netflix have a difficult time NUDGING their relatively low prices higher.

Maybe I should buy an antenna and go back to watching local TV. Quote
Maybe I should buy an antenna and go back to watching local TV

In my area there use to be 3 channels on the airwaves 1 x VHF Channel 3 and 2 x UHF 31, and 41 in New Hampshire. Now its down to 1 channel. If your in an area that still has VHF or UHF stations that havent gone 100% digital, your good, but if I were to hook up a TV back to antenna i'd be lucky to pick up the 1 and only channel left in my area which use to have some snow to its quality even with a good antenna.

When I moved out on my own in 1994 I went about a year with just 3 channels and the VCR was used heavily to record shows that were on either when I was sleeping or working, as for with just 3 channels there is not much choice in CONTENT to watch, so the VCR was a ways to compress all the content I wanted to watch to a tape, but still the same content even though different episodes got old. In 1995 I landed a good job to have extra money vs living paycheck to paycheck and got cable TV. Last year I severed the tie with cable TV and went to streaming only to save money due to no more extra income to burn and  I'd go weeks without turning the TV on, and my family also were no longer watching cable TV, but instead streaming everything. So here we are in 2014 streaming everything to the TV or Computers now unless playing a DVD or BluRay or dusting off the ancient VCR to play older movies.

My biggest annoyance with the streaming was that it soon had many commercials like cable TV, but soon I found ad-block plus and was able to avoid wasted time watching ( or not so much watching, but listening for the audio to change back to the show to look back to the display ) with the 8th same commercial cutting in every 6 minutes of a show.

For the paid netflix streaming service we are happy with, however netflix sometimes gets hammered with traffic and even though we have plenty of bandwidth one show you want to watch streaming will buffer every 30 seconds while if you switch to a less popular show or movie to watch you can watch it with no buffering interruptions.

Ad-Block Plus doesnt seem to block the free hulu, but it does block ads on youtube and crackle which is nice.

As far as Amazon goes, I buy products through their site, but I dont use their streaming services. I checked them out a ways back and didnt see anything good that was worth paying to watch. Maybe they have added more shows and movies to make it worth paying money, but... if you pay for Amazon, Hulu Plus, Netflix, and others soon your bills add up to the price of cable TV and there is no more savings.

The worst that can become of this price increase on Amazons part would be if there was a cooperation between all the online streaming identities to all raise their prices to pry more cash from everyones pockets. Generally its a good thing to have competition to avoid a monopoly, since one will be cheaper than the other to fight for customer base, but if they all strategically raised their prices then there is no longer a cheap way out to watch streaming content.

Crackle.com is my favorite free streaming site out there. I havent found any others that are as good as crackle that are free.

Solve : Questions / Advice on ( Home Versions of Windows )?

Answer»

So 6 months ago I became a union steward and was introduced to the systems that are used to process and store data and its a "BIG MESS" and I was asked to make it better by the new union PRESIDENT given my IT background.

The people before me were not very IT savy, and ran these systems like careless home users would, and there was no concern for data redundancy and backups etc, and both systems were run as admin and infected multiple times, and of which they had like 3 different antivirus's running on each system as a result of mismanaged systems. Also deleted about 250 GB of other software and questionable sources of data which may have been illegally downloaded etc by the prior president who thought he was king and also found out he was involved in illegal gambling in the work place, but was dethroned by the members in the recent landslide election after 12 years of his rule.

Locks changed immediately on the door to the union office upon election day when everyone knew he was getting kicked out before the vote so he couldnt do like one president did in the past which was grab a trash bag and throw folders of important documents into the trash bag from filing cabinet and shake the bag to mix it all up and walk out with a grin and they couldnt do anything but pick up the pieces by hours of sorting it all back together.

I have since COMPLETELY rebuilt both systems clean and locked out everyone but myself from admin privileges, so that no one can install junk on the systems etc, so everyone is running under a single 'User' profile for now. I also performed a hard reset on the wireless router and wiped out any crap that he may have had port forwarding or remote admin access to router etc to lock that down tight.

I also took my admin credentials and split them up into 3 slips of paper in which all 3 slips of paper are needed to construct the password. * I decided to implement this in case at some point in the future I am not available  3 responsible people can join the 3 pieces together and form the admin password and gain access to the systems to do whatever is needed in my absence. The new president, the Vice President, and the Treasurer each were given a slip each to keep hidden from everyone as 1 of 3 keys to gaining admin access. This way its secure and yet trusted among 3 people that the access would be of good intent and not a single person with that password can go in and destroy data like the prior president did before he left.

I also have a scheduled task that copies the important data from the 500GB NAS to the 500GB C: drive of the Windows 7 machine as a critically needed backup source so that if the 500GB NAS dies we still have most of the data excluding data altered or created that day on the C: drive of the workstation.

I also found out from another union member of good standing who doesnt spread rumors, but only truth, that this former union presidents brother who is now passed on was also an IT leak in the pentagon years ago and he was close to his brother. So this guys shadyness could have been secretly savy in hacking, remote access etc, which would now be illegal hacking if he did try to access the data that he should not have access to, and so I had to immediately reinitialize everything back to factory and build it all back up clean just to make sure he doesnt have any back doors in.

And the worthless idiot I didnt know still had access to the ISP e-Mail account and so from home in retaliation for his dethroning he went in and destroyed years of e-mail some of which were very important and we have yet to gain control of this e-Mail account which he has password to and refuses to give it up, and the ISP will not reset the password without the correct security questions answered of which the prior president has and so I told the new president to cancel this ISP Account and open a new account and that will sever the prior presidents access to data that he should not have access to messing with. And the biggest problem there is that the thousands of contacts are now GOING to need to know to contact us through a different e-mail so we will likely not get 100% of the mail we use to.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok enough with the background of this problem that was given to me and on with the uncertainty

( Items in BOLD are the questions to make them stand out, others are just listing stuff to do )
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I am attempting now something that I have never done before and looking for advice because I am not sure if it would work or not. Figured I'd check here basically before hitting a roadblock when trying to attempt this!

In the past I have used the PROFESSIONAL Editions of XP and 7 and  Server or Servers and everything works seamlessly as intended with the Professional Edition of these OS and Windows Server OS integration, but in this setup there is no server and just a NAS that is shared between the 2 systems for central data access between the 2 systems.

Here is the list of stuff I'd like to make work with the HOME Versions of XP and 7 and a 500GB NAS:

#1 - User Profiles Roaming for each of the 30 users so that no matter what system they log on to, their desktop is the same and everything stored locally to desktop is stored in the profile...... This profile will read/write from the NAS at Z:  ( I have never done this before and not sure if it can be redirected from C:\Documents and Settings\   ( and ) C:\Users\ to point to Z:\Users\  with the HOME Edition of these OS?

#2 - MS Office default save location to Z:\UserData\    and of which each user has a storage folder here, so to make it easy lets say user1, user2, user3 etc in which there are 30 people who will store data on Z:   (* This I have done before manually in MS Office to change the default save location, so I know that can be done.

#3 - Home Versions of XP and 7 only have ( Admin or User ) privileges. No Power User etc, and it would be NICE to give the president privileges above that of a normal user, but not admin privileges as for I am the IT Guru for this setup now and responsible to keep infections out and keeping it all working 24/7. I am not sure if this can be done somehow or if they really need to upgrade to Professional Edition OS to have more privilege tiers?

#4 - For 30 users with Windows XP and 7 Home editions the logon shows tabs for all user accounts, is there an easy way to make the logon screen like Professional has with just a USER / PASSWORD box instead of a clutter of accounts and having to find the right one to select from the pile?

Requests from all the users are the following in which some would be a lot of work to pull off:

#1 - Allow both systems to be able to use FileMaker 5.5 on both systems at the same time both working in the same database file at the same time..... *This to me is an issue where this is not a transactional database, and the only way I could see this POTENTIALLY working is if both systems were running stand alone copies of this database and then at timed intervals throughout the day both databases update a central database that is located on the Z: drive NAS ... But this is not a perfect solution as for if 2 people were working in the same tables and one person saved one piece of info and another saved a different piece of info, its my understanding that the last to save would overwrite the first to save. So there would have to be communication between the users to avoid working on the same case on that same day from 2 different computers or withing that timeframe that the merge hasnt happened yet. ** Personally it would be way better if a new transactional database was implemented based around like mySQL with a user interface to a mySQL server so that it would work flawless, but the problem is that there is 15 years of FileMaker database info that would need to migrate to the new database etc and that is something I am not looking forward to tackling, as well as the time I have to work on this is minimal, so I dont have time to construct a new database for this with a user interface.

#2 - They also are upset that the wifi was shut off intentionally. I told them that this was a security protocol that had to happen to keep certain people out ( vs stating the prior president out ). I may add 2 older routers in a Y configuration if its really necessary to give people the wifi. This way if anyone leaks the credentials and their mac address to the old president who is still here unfortunately, he has no way in through router firewall. To do this 1 router would be the primary to the modem and the 2 other routers would be the 2 isolated networks that share this single broadband connection. *Adds some latency, but the only cheap way to have 2 (isolated) secure networks sharing a single internet connection.

#3 - They also requested that the older Pentium 4 get replaced with a faster machine, but the prior union president was extremely wasteful with money and he was burning through his $300 a week without a vote required and who knows what it was spent on since slips are conveniently missing to account for money. So the new president took over with an account balance close to $0.00 and bills to pay that month in which they had to break into CD's to pay bills. So there will not be a new computer for some time.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Other stuff on my to do list is to add Battery Backups to the systems to protect them and keep them up during power disruptions. As well as to get a scanner to scan important documents to have electronic copies of them in PDF form so that if we are doing research into a case/problem we can search through text in documents for key words and find information vs fumbling through file cabinets packed with records.

Others with important roles in the union have also gone and changed bank account info and required signatures etc, and so once we get that e-mail account issue taken care of we should be done with locking out this idiot.

Well thats that.... and the reason why we cant upgrade to XP and 7 Pro and am attemtping to do this with the Home editions that I have never done before to know if it could be pulled off or not.

Thanks for input on this project that was thrown my way

Solve : Nasty Computer?

Answer»

Found this nasty computer when looking at this site linked from Facebook. Whoever lived in this apartment had issues. BUT the pictures of the computer reminded me of a client I had to visit back around 2001 who was an employee at the same job I had and she heard that I was good with computers and she asked if I could check her computer out because its broken.

I knew that she smoked, but I didnt expect the house to reek like an ash tray with walls that use to be white that were yellowed and when I was walked over to the computer desk, it was covered in ash and used up cigarette butts were everywhere on the desk top, overflowing out of the ash trays in which they ( husband and her ) had 3 ash trays one on top of the computer, one on top of the CRT monitor, and one just off to the right hand side in front of the mouse pad. And they had marks on the desktop case where they used the metal surface to tap the butts to put them out vs the ash tray.

I turned the computer on and it started to boot and then it WOULD shut down after about 20 seconds or so. So  pulled out my combination screwdriver that has the different bits for torx, flat head, or philips, and removed the cover to the desktop. The inside of the computer was just as bad as the outside although it was just a blanket of cigarette ash in there no butts like on the outside.

I then said... do you have a vacuum we can use to suck up all the ash and butts and she was then embarrassed to that statement and started going into a cleaning mode of the overfilled ash trays, and i said that the reason why its shutting down is because the ash inside has clogged up and locked up the CPU Fan.

So she got a trash bag and cleaned up the mess and took the vacuum to the keyboard, monitor, inside of the computer carefully not to suck jumpers off the board, and the desktop. The fan to the CPU was fouled up still and not spinning very freely. I had another Pentium 3 computer in the trunk of my car that was given to me dead that had a socket 370 fan that was good and thermal paste in my toolbox so i was able to replace that heatsink and then the system ran without shutting down.

In the end the bill for my services was $50 for 2 hours of my time + good used heatsink/fan. I then had to go home and take a shower right away because my clothes and self smelled like an ash tray.

Hopefully no one else who services computers ever has to deal with anything that nasty or worse. This is still nastier than the laptop that was brought to me though back in 2006 that had milk spill into it. The milk was still inside and was rotten, and so almost 2 weeks went by before the laptop was brought to me in which it was starting to fester inside. When that person brought the laptop to me, I wasnt told what happened to it over the phone, but when they brought it to me and took it out of the laptop case, I said wow, what is that smell? ...  and they said oh, yeah it took a spill and a bowl of cereal spilled into it and its been about 10 days any every place we bring the laptop to refuses to service it claiming that its a total loss and you need to buy a new laptop. But I am hoping you can fix it for us since your one of the best in fixing computers. I then said, well... thank you for bringing it to me because I am good with fixing computers, but I have bad news as well. Its going to cost more to fix that laptop than its worth. But in addition to that fact, I also didnt want the smell of rotten milk and cereal in my office as well, so i wanted it to go back where it came from. And they took the laptop back home and likely threw it away. I did offer data recovery service if they wanted the files recovered, but they didn't have any important data on it.

Pictures at this site of this apartment are filthy as sin. Glad I never had to service a computer in an environment this bad!!!

http://www.mandatory.com/2014/02/10/this-is-the-most-disgusting-apartment-ever/

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Computers used in a smoking environment are the worst - I've had machines I've had to store in the garage due to the smell!

Issue is that the smoke makes the inside of the PC sticky so dust sticks to it, then this layer of dust also gets sticky, so more sticks to it and so on making it extremely difficult to clean (you practically have to wipe it out, compressed air won't do it).

I have attached a photo of one of the worst PCs I've had - The photo was already after some cleaning.  What it doesn't get across is how HARD it was to actually get the dirt out of the case - It literally needed scraped out with kitchen roll.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Whew, that is one extremely nasty computer, DaveLembke.  I've seen some nasty keyboards, mice, and computers that are quite dirty on the inside, but I've never seen anything as bad as what you found there.  I once had to use a computer that belonged to some folks I was doing some accounting work for and they must have had a habit of eating while using the computer.  The keyboard and mouse were the dirtiest, nastiest ones I've ever encountered.  Their printer was also very dirty.  These people had a recently built home and I believe they must have had their printer sitting around while the house was under construction.  The printer was coated with a very thick layer of dust; it looked like it had been exposed to a construction site where the air would get saturated with dust from construction activity.  Not good for a printer. yeah seen some systems in industrial environments that were dusty as well as damp environments in a large food prep kitchen that is cleaned with a pressure washer that leads to problems.

The industrial environment was with automation and PLC controls etc for Procter & Gamble back when I worked for Allen-Bradley / Rockwell Automation and the systems and controllers would form deposits of diaper dust as we called it, because it was a white powder and smelled like clean diapers and baby powder. The good thing was that with compressed air and careful to avoid blowing jumpers off, with 90psi at the nozzle you could strip the dust away and make it like new.

However at the food store that I use to work at that had computers in large food prep kitchen, the problems were worse. On a daily basis to keep to food safe compliance they had to pressure wash and clean everything with a bleach/water mixture. The computers were not in direct fire of a pressure washer, but the air would smell strong of bleach and was humid at times. They had a higher than normal computer failure rate of a system lasting about 12 to 18 months before it would start to act up or completely die. Before I got hired there they would simply just replace the systems without trying to eliminate the cause. I got hired there and discovered a stack of computers that were dead or had issues. My boss told me that they all failed at this one location and he wasnt sure why. He thought maybe there was dirty power over there and added a UPS, but didnt correct the problem. He asked me to check into it. I started by looking at the prior failed systems and I found surface rust inside the computer case, and component legs to IC's were growing a green and white fuzz ( COPPER and lead oxide crystals ). In addition to this some spider webs inside the computers were not just dry webs, but were a brown oily filmy COATING to them which was either oils in the air that condensed to the webs or possibly bacteria that was living on the spider webs I then told my boss that the problem appears to be caused by too much humidity. He asked how we can fix this since they have to have a computer over there. I ended up TELLING them to build an office with a door that can be shut, and add a dehumidifier into the office and this should fix the problem. Met with the gritting of teeth at the cost of having to do that, I finally got the approval to spend $5000 to make a small office within the building to have some environmental control for the 2  computers. I told him and the accountant of the company that its either spend up to $5000 to fix this problem or spend $600-$1000 a year for a new business class desktop + the IT hours to prep the system for use. They saw it my way and realized that they really needed to cure the problem than throw costly disposable computers at it.

In addition to this the food store also owned a gas station as part of their coopertive food chain and I had to build a cabinet for the computer to be placed in that filtered air and vented out the warm air from the computer inside. With some ply wood, 2x4's, screws, tools, and a air filter used for a small furnace, and some 120VAC muffin fans,  I was able to make a small clean air box for the system to operate in. The problem they had with the system at the garage was the metal dust from grinding, cutting, and hammering on brake drums and rotors etc was getting sucked into the computer and causing a build up of iron dust which was causing the computer to act up with BSOD or as in 1 case blew a PSU when somehow a drill filing fell into the case and landed on the tower that was on its side with the air holes facing up for small bits to fall into from gravity and short the sytem. I also added a new keyboard and optical mouse vs the ball type that was acting up, and bought a keyboard model that had a thin formed to the keyboard model peel and stick vinyl covering that could be placed on top and keep junk out of getting under the keys etc and the mouse now could just be blown out at the optic eye in the bottom vs a ball that collects junk and dust covers encoder wheel eyes etc.

BTW posting this I found out that " kitchen with an s following it " has been added to the *spam* filter, so I had to use kitchen instead.  Just have a peek in the SPAM section...you'll understand right away.... Oh that's really nasty, never seen anything like that. I worked somewhere once where I tipped the keyboard upside down to clean it and a load of crumbs and fingernails fell out, gross. Quote

Because it wasn't released in 2008.

That CPU  looks to be an Athlon 64, based on googling the first set of numbers. They were released in 2005.

Not sure why it's not listed in the list of Processors. I think it is showing the release date of the final stepping.

Hmm ... interesting with conflicting info between 2 links here.

I also own a system with the AMD 4850e 2.5Ghz that I bought brand new in the spring of 2008 and it shows a release date on the wiki of March 5, 2008 and I built this system up with tax refund money that year in late April 2008. Was pretty sure it was a newly released CPU when I bought that dual-core and not just a new in box but 3 year old CPU.

This system was put on the wayside as an alt box when I was given the quadcore Athlon II x4 620 2.6Ghz for free from a friend which I immediately swapped out the weaker Sempron x2 2200 ( 2.0Ghz ) on my prior alt slower box to this quadcore to become my primary gaming box, since why run on less for gaming when you have a more powerful system to use.

But anyways not really that important I guess, its just a date on a CPU that is site unseen anyways when heatsink applied and no computer problems. I guess the date is in reference to the AMD 64 x2 program that started in 2005/2006 from your link, although time frames are mismatched between the 2 links both at wiki.

Thanks for everyones input on this question.

Solve : Dell Inspiron 3847?

Answer»

My father bought me this computer from dell last weekend. I got it on friday. A friend who knows more about computers then I do. moved my power supply (500W) and my graphics card (Nividia geforce gts 250) from my four year old E-machine to the dell computer. He TURNED on the computer and the screen went to sleep and would not operate. When he plugged the screen into the built in VGA connection the screen came on and there was a message about the intergrated card being disabled and saying to plug it into the graphics card. We put the power supply and card back into the E-machine and the same thing happened. So I THOUGHT it happened cause the card got broken sometime after taking it out of the E-machine. So I went and bought a brand new card (Radeon R7 250 core edition), When we put it in the dell computer once again the monitor went to sleep and would not respond. We put the power supply back into the E-machine and put the card into it hooked up the monitor and the monitor WORKED. I called Dell Tech Support twice the next day, The second time the Tech ended up hanging up on me. I told them the computer was defective they told me only certain cards are compatible with it. I asked which ones, They ended up EVENTUALLY telling me Nividia geforce gt 625 and 635 are two that were tested by dell and worked with the computer. Both are OEM and not sold in any computer store near me and going by the specs on them they would not do me any good. I play the sims 3 and need a card that will handle the graphics of the game.

Does ANYBODY know anything about the Dell Inspiron 3847? I am trying to find out what card will work in it that I would be able to go to a computer store and get.

Thanks for any info that can be given The R7 250 should certainly work with your machine.  What make/model is this power supply as there are massive variations between them?  It would also be useful to know the model and/or specs of your old E-machines system.Right now I am at my dads. Tomorrow when I go home I will check for the info. I know the name of the Power supply starts with the word Earth and that my E-machines was supposed to have 2.4 for the processor but ended up with 2.7 instead. I guess it was a mistake they made when putting the computer together or when they were packing the computers. I have 4gb of Ram in it. I do not remember what the original power supply was. I'd stay far away from any eMachines PSU as they used the cheapest they could find in all their PC's...

This is from personal experience.  I got it fixed. I found out that Radeon cards and Intel processors sometimes do not like to work with each other. I got a Nividia GeForce gt 640 card and now my Inspiron 3847 works.

Solve : SSD Upgrade I decided to buy Crucial M500 240GB SSD for $130?

Answer»

Was looking to swap out the slower HDD with a SSD on my newest ASUS laptop that I use for gaming and ended up buying the Crucial M500 240GB SSD for $130. Almost bought a Kingston 240GB SSD for $5 cheaper until I did some research and it had some BAD warning signs!!!

Here is the Crucial M500 240GB SSD drive I got for $130: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148694

Here is the Kingston SSDnow V300 240GB SSD drive that I almost bought for $125 until the reviews scared me off: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820721108

Here are the warning signs I saw at the Kingston SSD Drive that were INDICATORS that it might be a bad choice:

( 4 of 5 egg/star review )
Got 5.05 Good Version and NOT a 5.06 BAD Version
Performs as advertised
Running 5.05 FIRMWARE, not the 506/521 version
Quiet, cool like a ssd should

( 2 of 5 egg/star review )
NAND switch confirmed - SHADY

***The reviews at Newegg for this device are mixed between 120GB and 240GB reviews so the 4 of 5 egg rating was skewed, so this drive may not be 4 of 5 but much worse, but covered up by the 120GB drive reviews.

The biggest concern was looking into this 5.05 and 5.06 firmware ISSUE, which it appears that its not just a firmware difference but that Kingston also decided to cut costs of manufacturing by deciding through part of the products manufacturing cycle to also replace the better flash with lower quality flash and so if you have a 5.05 firmware drive you knew you had the better flash, but if you had the newer 5.06 version, you are almost certain that you have the lower quality and high failure rate flash chips contained in this SSD.

Cant wait for this Crucial M500 240GB SSD to be delivered. Going to end up voiding my warranty on my laptop was confirmed with ASUS. The HDD is burried in it and so its going to require quite a lot of dismantling to install. Prior to installation I am going to test this SSD with a SATA 2.5/3.5" USB HDD/SSD dock that I have. This way I know that the drive was tested good going into this laptop. Really not sure why so many laptops these days are being built without panels to gain easy access to HDD's to swap them out. More and more are becoming dismantle projects to upgrade or replace drives and unfortunately I am going to be destroying my warranty as a result of this SSD upgrade which otherwise would not be void if there was a HDD door/panel to remove and gain safer access to the drive.

Here is some more info on the M500 drive SERIES: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/crucial-m500-1tb-ssd,3551.html

*** This drive is not the fastest out there, but at this price tag to me it seemed like the best cost to quality and storage capacity I could locate that I also trusted the brand name and of which the reviews were promising that the SSD PURCHASED should be a good solid device.

Solve : The Risk of Running Windows XP Forever.?

The Risk of Running Windows XP Forever.
Does that scare you?  Do you loose sleep at night barbecue you still have a XP computer in your home or office?
Hey! -That is not coming from me...
Tim Rains - Microsoft , posited this on 15 Aug 2013
Of course, after that MS said they would extend the security updates.
Here is part of the wild rant Tim Rains s wrote:
Quote

... after April 8, 2014, organizations that continue to run Windows XP won’t have this advantage over attackers any longer.  The very first month that Microsoft releases security updates for supported versions of Windows, attackers will reverse engineer those updates, find the vulnerabilities and test Windows XP to see if it shares those vulnerabilities.  If it does, attackers will attempt to develop exploit code that can take advantage of those vulnerabilities on Windows XP.  Since a security update will never become available for Windows XP to address these vulnerabilities, Windows XP will essentially have a “zero day” vulnerability forever.  How often could this scenario occur?  Between July 2012 and July 2013 Windows XP was an affected product in 45 Microsoft security bulletins, of which 30 also affected Windows 7 and Windows 8.

Now the problem here is that other people are using the same kind of logic. It is as if only Microsoft can stop virus attacks, therefore all must update on the path MS says we must follow. Did it sever occur to any  that other organizations c an offer XP users some reasonable level of security?

What do you say?
For me it's not even the fact that XP is full of security holes - XP is 12 years old, why people still insist on using it is beyond me!  All that will happen to those people is that software developers will just drop support for XP.  For example, IE8 is the newest version of IE to run on XP, web application developers LIKE me have a dreadful job trying to make our stuff work in IE8 - Nowadays my rule is that my stuff must work in IE8, but I don't care how it looks as it's simply not worth supporting XP users.  This will be the same down the line when Firefox and Google Chrome/Chromium drop support for XP.

Continuing to support XP holds development back massively, software developers struggle to take advantage of all of the new features of Windows Vista/7/8 if they have to support XP.

Sure antivirus can still work on XP, but it's only Microsoft that can patch underlying vulnerabilities in the core operating system, with this not happening, people will be open to security issues no matter what antivirus they are running.

Doubt this will continue for long, I can see antivirus companies also dropping support for XP in their products- Why should they spend time and money supporting users who are simply too stubborn to move to something up-to-date?XP is still ok to use online, but depending on its use though!!!

I wouldnt be using XP or any older Windows OS for anything (high risk) such as paying bills, checking banking info, making online PURCHASES with credit cards, or checking primary e-mail etc.

I have a Toshiba Netbook with an Intel Atom 1.66Ghz and 2GB 667Mhz DDR2 RAM with 60GB OCZ SSD that is running Windows XP Home SP3. While I once used this netbook for more important (higher risk) online communications such as all listed above. I have since replaced the (higher risk) data communications with a trusted Windows 7 system that is only used for that purpose. I don't use my gaming system or other system that I download games and try all sorts of software on etc as for this system is running with the risk that something could slip into it under the radar of AV and Malwarebytes scans, and so its best to be over protective and lower your risk then use the same system that others use as well as yourself use for installing and playing new games or trying new free utilities etc in which one could be a future data security threat. Since I have multiple systems, I can do this.

However if its SOMEONE who has just 1 computer and cant afford another to designate it for the sole purpose of only extremely confidential data communications, if they were running XP now and cant buy a new system and want to have a better sense of security they can either switch to Linux OS for free or buy a copy of Windows 7 ( probably 32-bit for systems with "1GB to 3GB RAM" unless they have "4GB or more RAM" to go with 64-bit  and make 64-bit worth while) and be covered with security updates.

I have gotten Windows 7 32-bit to run on a computer that was a 2002 year model eMachine with Pentium 4  2.00Ghz with 1GB DDR 266Mhz RAM and 60GB IDE HDD, however it was not a smooth upgrade. Intel did not make newer drivers for older Intel 845 GL chipset and so the integrated graphics were stuck at 640x480 with 256 color with Windows 7 32-bit after install. I ended up forcing Windows 7 32-bit Home Premium to take the Intel 845 GL chipset driver which was an XP driver to get the integrated graphics to top out at 1024x768 with 16-bit color. BUT with only 1GB of RAM and the fact that this was an early Pentium 4 which was not HT and not as much cache as the later Pentium 4 CPU's as well as only 2.00 Ghz, it was running Windows 7 32-bit slowly, and there was no such thing as multitasking. BUT... if I had activated this installation ( which I didnt, it was just a test ), I could have fully patched this computer that was 12 years old and been able to go online to higher risk websites and been protected under latest *Reactive Security Threats. ( * Most MS Updates are reactive, and so even if your running Windows 7 or 8 / 8.1 you can still get hit with a newly found vulnerability that has yet to be patched )

Based on my experience of Windows 7 on older hardware, my suggestion is to run it on a system with at least 2GB RAM even though it can run on 1GB. The eMachine computer made in 2002 might have run Windows 7 32-bit better on 2GB of RAM, but the motherboard only supported 1GB RAM maximum 512MB per slot with 2 memory slots. Also the CPU should be 2.66Ghz or faster for the Pentium 4 series CPU's for best results. I haven't tested Windows 7 32-bit on a Celeron CPU from the Pentium 4 era socket 478 or 775 CPU's, but performance would be lesser than a Pentium 4.

Ideally I'd suggest an INTEL Core 2 Duo CPU or AMD Athlon64 x2 CPU or better depending on if your running INTEL or AMD. RAM I would suggest at least 2GB for Windows 7 32-bit and at least 4GB for Windows 7 64-bit.

I have 2 older systems at are running this era CPU with Windows 7 and they run it very well. Below is the CPU, RAM, and OS of each one.

The INTEL is my wifes:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600  2.4Ghz with 4MB Cache ( 2 cores )
3GB DDR2 667Mhz RAM ( 2 x 1GB sticks and 2 x 512MB sticks )
Windows 7 32-bit Home Premium

The AMD is my older gaming system:

AMD Athlon64 x2 4450B 2.3Ghz with 10% O.C. to 2.53Ghz with 1MB Cache shared between both cores ( 2 cores )
4GB DDR2 800Mhz RAM ( 2 x 2GB sticks * Maximum supported for motherboard )
Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium

***Also for anyone wanting Windows 7 and has a really old Windows XP machine that would crawl with Windows 7 because it doesnt match up well to the specs I shared.... There are many refurb computers out there for sale for as cheap as $129.99 with free shipping that come preinstalled with Windows 7 32-bit and usually come with 2GB RAM. But these systems are usually Pentium D's or early Core 2 Duo systems and are not rated well for modern heavy graphics games. However some have PCI Express slots so you can add a better GPU via Video Card. So for just about the cost of Windows 7 itself you can get it + the hardware included that may be an upgrade to what you already have which the hardware can be looked at as free with the Windows 7 upgrade at this price tag.

I took advantage of a refurb deal like this through Tiger Direct back in 2007 to buy 40 qty HP SFF Desktop Computers loaded with XP Professional on Pentium 4 2.66Ghz CPU's, 512MB RAM, 80GB IDE HDD's, with CD-ROM's for only $109.99 per refurb computer. This was wen XP Pro was still $130 per license. So I upgraded 40 computers for this business to XP Pro and got rid of older Pentium 1, 2, and 3 systems that were running NT4 SP6 and Windows 2000 Pro SP4 and we now had faster systems for free plus bought 40 copies of XP Pro at $20 off per computer. This was easy to sell to the GM of the business. These systems also ran well up until I left the company in July 2009. Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 13, 2014, 03:51:03 PM

What do you say?

There is a massive confusion about what the lack of security updates will really mean.

Some people seem to think it means that XP simply won't get security updates. And, of course- that is correct. What people fail to realize is that once XP stops receiving updates, it will not be necessary for malware authors to look very hard to try to find exploits in XP they can take advantage of- because Microsoft will be delivering exploits right to their doorstep for examination in the form of Vista, 7, and 8 security patches.

Once XP is no longer receiving security updates, every single Vista, 7, and 8 security patch is going to be reverse ENGINEERED (as usual) and that information can be used to attack XP. Remember that Vista,7, and 8 are all based on the same codebase as XP and as a result a good number of low-level security issues that turn up in later versions can also affect XP. Therefore every security patch for later versions becomes a likely security exploit for Windows XP, because XP will not be receiving a relevant patch.

My favourite part is that there are people that use this as an example of Microsoft's "forced upgrade path". Often this comes from those in the Open Source community. They of course fail to recognize that the equivalent versions of Linux from 2001 have not been supported since 2006 at the latest for Long-term support versions...

I am a website builder and several of my websites as well as my customers that are having trouble viewing their websites through any AT&T network. They work perfectly FINE on other networks and all other technical issues have been checked. After spending an hour on the phone with still no answer I found several posts here stating the same problems that I am experiencing.

Please tell me what I have to do to allow the sites that I build to be accessible through the AT&T networks.

Thank you.
The link  above GIVES other posts related to this. It is not an isolated case.  However, some  times it may be the security settings of your browser and not AT&T. To TEST, use another computer with another browser.
Personally I had had something that feels like this, but  said thing has not been resolved yet. My only guess is that some sites have problems with SSL certification or something like that.

As Camerongray said, it's a lot of speculation.

"It seems like they won't be doing that for much longer because they are going to be going to windows 9"

Absolutely baseless. I can say with some certainty that this guy is making this up. I like how he ends that part with "Possible" as if to basically admit AFTER that everything he had said was basically made up.

He has no basis for that which he is saying. Thankfully he covered his *censored* by adding "possibly" and "may have" to pretty much everything- which is about what you would expect when they are making things up in the interest of attracting views.

If it works, buy me a beer.  It's no different to all the other videos that come out before a new release of Windows SHOWING "concepts" which are basically mockups made by the person making the video or found scattered around online, nothing official.  For example this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_0FiZeXkMw while you would say that this is a preview of Windows 9, it's merely a SLIGHTLY interactive concept that looks to have been made in something like powerpoint or flash.  This is completely non-news.

I mean, look at the photos of all the "new" iPhone models coming out and see how they look nothing like the final product.  Same deal with all those "leaks" that have come before every other Windows release that end up looking nothing like the final version.

All rumours are based on the shaky premise that Windows 9 is going to be announced at the BUILD CONFERENCE this April.

The rumours are of course possible particularly given Microsoft's recent INCREASED cadence and release cycle.

However, it is still all speculation, as there has been no announcement, leak, or other information provided from a Microsoft source that confirms any of this information.

List of Free Anti-Virus Software

This is only a list. It is neither complete nor is it the best. It is startling point.
No links given   Find them yourself. (Often I find links that are contaminated.)
I believe these are are real. But I want your help for MAKING the best choice.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.70

360 INTERNET Security 2013

Avira Free AntiVirus (2014)

avast! Free Antivirus 8

Microsoft Security Essentials 4.0

Ad-Aware Free Antivirus+ 10.5

Want I want is a good free AV for one year.
Please add to the list and give comments.
Thank you.    All I use (And ever feel the need for) is either MSE or Avast and then run regular scans with Malwarebytes.  You don't need to WRAP your machine up in layer upon layer of protection - Just be SENSIBLE with what you download and run!Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is not an anti-virus PROGRAM.  It is a very good tool to use in conjunction with an anti-virus program.

As far as choice of an anti-virus program, I don't think we want to declare a "best" one. Everybody forms an opinion based on personal experience.  So, questions about which one is best will get differing opinions.

My personal choice is avast! Free Antivirus.  I especially like the Web Shield feature; it has stopped me from viewing numerous malicious websites.

Solve : Sempron 140 to Athlon II x2 4400e CPU Unlock?

Answer»

Was reading into unlocking AMD CPU's and found an interesting article that got me thinking about the Sempron 140 CPU that I have in 2 systems which is included in the test list.

I bought these cheap CPU's ($35 USD each ) a few years ago  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103698   for 3 loaner desktop computers that I built with cheap name brand parts. I built these up to offer to loan to clients if I needed to have their system for a length of time and this way they were not stuck without a computer to use. This was popular for a while and people really liked not being without a computer. However when you build computers to not be vulnerable and break, your work eventually slows as it has. So these loaners are not loaned out as much anymore as they were when I had lots of people needing repairs and they are collecting dust and rarely powered up anymore. Also 1 of the 3 computers a client liked so much that they wanted to keep it and so I sold it to them for $220 which was my cost in parts and Windows OS. They weren't a gamer and they just needed a good fast system for e-mail, web content, playing music, and the occasional youtube video. This Sempron 140 single-core 2.7Ghz 45watt CPU is not a bad Cold Blooded CPU for placement with a user with those limited processing power needs and it benchmarks slightly better than a Hot Blooded Pentium D 3.2Ghz dual-core.

However I was looking online to see if an Athlon II X2 215 2.7Ghz CPU that was given to me from a friend who upgraded to a Phenom x3 for $27 and 25% performance gain thru amazon had any info on the web for Over Clocking and Core/Cache Unlocks. I found the article below in which a number of CPUs were tested for Unlock's and surprise surprise the Sempron 140 is in this list as possibly unlocking to a Athlon II x2 4400e.

So I am going to attempt to unlock this Sempron 140 2.7Ghz when I get home from work in the 2 systems I have and if it unlocks, then test it for problems. It would be neat if it unlocks to healthy dual-cores. Yes, its still not as powerful as a modern higher end CPU, but the benchmarks show a good performance gain in getting the other core to fire up..... Hopefully no pun intended with the Fire Up     But if it did destroy the CPU thru this process no big loss. The Athlon II x2 215 will be going into one of them as an upgrade though even if they both unlock.

Anyone else here ever unlock a CPU and if so which CPU and what did it unlock to and what performance gain, as well as if you had any NEGATIVE experiences with unlocking also share those too?

http://www.overclock.net/t/1126390/how-to-identify-potentially-unlockable-amd-chipsUnable to unlock my Sempron 140 with the Zotac ITX motherboard as seen here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813500045 .

The only ability for a performance boost is to overclock. So I guess you need a better motherboard that has the feature that this board is lacking to try to unlock CPU's.

However since I was in the bios, I did test to see how much of an overclock I could push the Sempron 140 2.7Ghz. And the fastest I could push it was an extra 108 mhz to 2808Mhz via 208Mhz vs 200Mhz FSB x 13.5 (locked) multiplier at 2700Mhz. At 209Mhz FSB the motherboard would fail at POST and state that the setting is bad. At 208Mhz it would boot without any problems. The temp of the CPU also ran very cool at this setting at idle of 36C and when crunching numbers in benchmark after 10 minutes it levelled off at 46C. At native clock of 2.7Ghz the idle was 33C and benchmark after 10 minutes crunching levelled off to 43C.

The slight 3.85% performance gain on this CPU is only noticed when running a benchmark, and the gain is only noticed there in a difference of how fast it was able to calculate to PI before and after etc. * I wouldnt bother OVERCLOCKING a single-core Sempron.

I ended up SWAPPING out this Sempron 140 2.7Ghz with the Athlon II x2 215 2.7Ghz that was given to me and drastic performance improvement by using this dual-core instead of the single-core.

If I was able to unlock this Sempron 140 to a healthy Athlon II x2 4400e dual-core it would have been nice, but I didnt have the right board to perform this.

Solve : Windows XP Support Expiration Warning?

Just did a reboot of a Windows XP Home SP3 system after some UPDATES and FOUND this pop up MESSAGE center screen. Interesting that MS decided to add this warning in with the recent updates.

I'd use the word responsible. This way Users at LEAST know about the situation. It was installed as a stand-alone update. The update is actually named "End of support notification".

Interestingly, MSE also now contains warnings that XP support will end next month.  It also always indicates your machine's status as: "Potentially Unprotected".

At least the popup message has the checkbox for "Don't show this again", MSE pops up a warning on every boot and I haven't found a way to disable it.

Solve : Hiding Yourself from being online?

Answer»

So here is the situation:

You want to check/view facebook or play an online game and not be bothered by friends who want to chat or game with you.

On Facebook the only method I have found is to run a Live Linux Distro of Linux Mint 9 LTS which allows you to view Facebook as well as you can post or reply to posts, but the Facebook scripting feature to show that I am online seems to malfunction so I can be on without disruptions and be a ghostly figure that slips in posts..LOL

On World of Warcraft when the RealID feature came out I openly accepted almost all invites. Problem I have now is that I have a few people who want me to play with them every time I am on, and they are not accepting the fact that i want to just do my own thing every once in a while. Problem is that I am good friends with these people and so I dont want to remove them as RealID friends, but I want to be able to slip on and game without getting bothered when on a different realm and on an alt that they are not aware of that the RealID feature points me out no matter where I am either Diablo III, World of Warcraft, or Hearthstone.

I found a possible solution by blocking traffic to blizzards server at 12.129.206.130 port 1119 for USA. However Windows XP Firewall stinks for trying to block traffic to this IP for inbound/outbound for port 1119.

So I am going to try using Zonealarm for the first time in many years which I have been able to use in the past for better than Windows firewall however is there a better way to block traffic to remain hidden and enable/disable to show that I am online and willing to accept requests to communicate or disabled because I just want to be left alone.  In general, the forum does not help people hide their on-line pretense.
However, there are security reasons an individual may have the makes it necessary to hide his or her presence on a web site.

For example, you might be a famous sports HERO and you just want to get on a friendly site without other people knowing who you are. So you would like to have some means to prevent personal information about you from leaving  your computer.  Hey, that is what a lot of people want!

On way is to go over to your Grandma's house and use her old Windows 95 PC.  Nobody would guess that it is you. Especially with that 33K dial up modem.

Another idea. Just search BING for the French phrase:
Hyde Mi Äss

LOL at Geeks response and using dial-up at 33k

Found a way to block it using a command with my router that is flashed with DD-WRT

Was able to block battlenet Real ID by the following command run from the web interface to the router in advanced commands section in which you can run scripts or process a single line like I did:

iptables -I FORWARD -p tcp --dport 1119 -j DROP

This kills Battlenet communications but i can still log onto the game and play and chat in guild chat .... YAY!!!

Yet another Geek Classic...Just wanted to share that this port block command instruction method in DD-WRT is not persistent, but can be, and I chose not to make it persistent so that to unblock the port block / cancel the instruction that was added to block port 1119 for all IP's, I simply just need reset the power to the router and it goes back to its original configuration prior to the command that I told the router to run for iptables.

*Also for World of Warcraft, you need to log onto the game first before implementing this, since the authentication service of the game client uses port 1119 at the get go to authenticate with battle.net . Once you logon and are at your character screen, then you can implement the port block to 1119, and then select the realm or character you want to play on and you are hidden from view to others who would normally track/see you on battle.net's realID service.

The realm you are on however if its the same realm as the other person playing that you are trying to hide from, and they have you on their friends list, they will still see you!

So if they are on the same realm as you and you want to hide, you need to play on a different realm on a different character that they are unaware of.

The traffic for chat communications / general and trade channels etc and tagging you as active in guild list and friends list may be using port 3724, but you cant kill this port and have the game run. This port seems to be shared with other data which is key to keeping the handshake between the game client and the server.

I messed around with shutting off other ports that WoW uses to see what the impact was and the game wont function with the others blocked. So I guess I am fortunate that port 1119 was only used for RealID and Authentication, and that the Authentication is a 1 time handshake requirement, since once you are authenticated, you can sever this port, and your connection thread is handed over to another process that allows for you to navigate between realms and characters of multiple blade servers in data centers hosting the realms around the world.

The same way it would get into a computer. Or, as the very article you linked explains:

Methods used to infect a mobile device include compromising legitimate sites and distributing malware via alternative app STORES and bots (the bots usually self-proliferate by sending out text messages with a malicious link to addresses in the victim’s address book).

Who would  trust their fiances to a gadget?
What engaged couples do in the bedroom is none of our concern!Viruses on mobile devices have been around a while but they are pretty limited as (at least in the case of Android as that's what I'm familiar with) they can only be installed by the user if they EXPLICIT allow apps that aren't from the official store to be installed and then install a dodgy version, usually through trying to pirate an app.  On iOS this is even more difficult as the device would need to be jailbroken.

Quote
The people in the UK do banking on the mobile phone?

Short answer: Yes, Yes, Me.

I find it extremely useful being able to do bank related things on my phone LIKE send money to people, check my balance and get money out of ATMs if I don't have my card for some reason.  Even if the phone was lost/stolen, the app for my bank still requires codes to enter as well as the lock on the phone and of course I can disable the app/phone online.

I don't SEE using this any different to using online banking from my PC?  I can't think of the last time I actually phoned or went into a bank other than to pay in physical cash, why?  Because doing it online is convenient and saves a lot of time.

Besides, I'd trust a computer to do something a lot more than someone in a bank branch - Humans make mistakes, computers don't.  All the person in the branch does anyway is enter the data into a computer, and errors can occur at this stage.  If I had been able to use online banking several years ago, I doubt I'd have had the issue of where my account had been set up in my middle name instead of my first name which was obviously human error.

Solve : Omegle,chatroulette.?

Answer»

Im thinking of registering on these web sites. I have heard there is a lot of VIRUS's on these sites? Can anyone advise me if, in there opinion these sites are ok to register on, and use. I have Kaspersky Pure 3.0 for protection on my Windows 8, laptop.Any insite would be helpful. I live alone and thought it would be cool to talk to others in the same boat, and around the world. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.Yes. That SITE is considered safe.
Quote

Omegle is a free online chat website that allows users to communicate with strangers without registering. The service randomly pairs users in one-on-one chat sessions where they chat anonymously using the handles "You" and "Stranger". The site was created by 18-year-old Leif K-Brooks of Brattleboro, Vermont, and was launched on March 25, 2008.[2][3] Less than a month after its March 2008 launch, Omegle garnered around 150,000 page VIEWS a day,[4] and in March 2009 the site introduced a video conferencing feature. The site now provides a mobile application that lets users chat with strangers from mobile devices.

Comparisons have been made to early-1990s AOL.[5] Other websites that provide similar services include Zumbl, Chatroulette and Tinychat.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omegle

Also, Chatroulette is an online chat website that pairs random people from around the world together for webcam-based conversations.
IMHO neither is  something g I would recommend.
But others say both  safe. (WOT gives both  a green light)Both of those sites are safe from a virus perspective, the issue with them lies with CHILD protection as there is no moderation on the site.Thank you Camerongray and Geek for the fast reply. I'm not sure if I will register, but it would be cool to talk with someone from around the world.

Solve : Secure Connection Failed?

This screen shot was made today, April  13.

As you can see, it was while trying g to get on Google.

This has been happening very often. No explanation.

I have talked to the ISP and got no explanation. My connection will often work for hours without this error.

Any ideas?
There is a Mozilla Support article on this.

Buggy add-on?
Do you remember installing any add-ons around the time this FIRST HAPPENED?

I would probably start with the 'Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems'

Or for advanced users there is the option to disable that error message. Thanks for the reply.
It will take me time to read  the Mozilla articles.

Yes,  I do have add-ons. I will disable  them and see if that helps.
BTW. I have had a similar message on CHROME.
Also, the message happens when I get a DSL error on my modem. But how can I know if ones is the cause of the other?
I have Alvira free version, full scan shows nothing. Today Malwarebytes showed nothing.

If Firefox the newest stable version?

The only time this ever happens to me is on websites with INVALID security CERTIFICATES but I don't think it has ever happened on a Google website.

Solve : Old IDE HD Thunderbird Profile?

Answer»

I have a unique problem, I think. made a NEW build and now comes the tedious work of getting things to work as they did on the old pc. I installed a new VERSION of Thunderbird. On my old HD, I would like to copy my profile to the new one...lots of important emails still on it. naturally, the HD is not bootable and I can't get on the internet with it, so i can't do the ususal search in RUN: %applic...etc."  I do see the FOLDER though and I did copy the entire folder, but i do not see the Profile folder...is it in that long name with the Default extension? If so, I thought just copying the profile folder would be sufficient and  would give u all that u need...I don't want to have duplications... ANYhow  is there a way that I can do this? When you install and start thunderbird it will create a default profile, and that is randomly generated. If you copy the profile from elsewhere, the installed version of Thunderbird doesn't know about it, because it uses a different randomly generated name. You need to edit profiles.ini and add the name of the profile. It should be relatively straightforward- just PASTE in the name of the copied folder into the "default" profile section. eg. if the folder you copied is "ze0x03d9.default" you would change the profiles.ini:
Code: [Select][Profile0]
Name=default
IsRelative=1
Path=Profiles/ze0x03d9.default
Default=1
Thanks..I did just that and when I RESTARTED TB, only my recent accounts are shown. I copied the default file into the TB main folder too.  Years ago it was simple to do as u said...but now it seems it has gotten more difficult. Wondering if I should copy the old TB folder and do it that way.

Solve : Wndows Media Player problem?

Answer»

I have an audio book comprising 22 discs that I want to rip to transfer to my MP3 PLAYER. Using Windows Media Player I loaded them in sequence and all seemed to be going well ("ripped to library" and normal ejection after each disc. etc.).  After several discs had been ripped I checked the library and found that only 4 was listed.  I persevered and after the 12th disc I checked again - no change.  I thought that maybe the missing ones had been sent to some other folder, but I can't find them anywhere.  I find it odd that they seem to have disappeared -  I have ripped books of more that a dozen discs several times with no trouble. I tried "search" with no success - that just brings up the 4 discs that were ok.  Advice appreciated about what to check or do next.
I have Vista and plenty of hard disk spaceOne problem you might be running into is if the naming convention is the same between the discs that are ripped, the LAST disc to run overwrites a prior ripped file. You may need to rip them 1 at a time and then manually move the mp3 file to a safe location separate from the drop location of the ripped mp3 file. And doing them 1 by 1 and manually moving you should have all 22.

I had a similar issue happen before with some GREATEST hits albums etc where they overwrite each other with a multi disc greatest hits album when making MP3 for MP3 player.

Having only disc 2 and disc 1 missing was a dead give away when it HAPPENED between 2 multi disc greatest hits albums which would rip a file like Artist Greatest Hits.mp3 instead of Artist Greatest Hits 1.mp3 and Artist Greatest Hits 2.mp3Thanks for reply, DaveL - I think you are probably right about overwriting - I hadn't thought of that, but it would explain another anomaly in my procedure.   When I rip a disc I usually edit the title (---- disc 1, 2, etc.).  I started to do this with disc 1 and found that the title included the disc number, so I didn't bother with the other discs, but during the operation I did find that the other discs showed the wrong number (assorted 1 to 4!).  I'll delete all that I've done and start again with correct disc numbers edited in and see if that works ok.
Thanks again.Just for info - I started from SCRATCH and edited the discs, before the rip: "Title disc 1" then disc 2,3 etc and it has worked - the all transferred to library in correct order.Cool to hear that the added procedure to avoid overwriting prior rips worked.

No fair cheating. But you can fin d the right answers by doing a search on:
The 25 most common passwords
The  results my surprise you.
The old dirty words are not in the list. Too short.
Note that 'Spider_Man' is not on the TOP 25.
Nor is 'Scooby-Doo'  nor 'Graviaty' no other thongs like that. Not EVEN 'Avitar-2' is there. People are just not using their IMAGINATION anymore to make passwords!

Solve : Creative Labs Sound Blaster 128 CT5801 PCI Card lives on?

Answer»

So I finally got rid of the last daily used Pentium 4 computer in my home. I did some work for a client migrating his data from a Dell Inspiron 530 with Core 2 Duo E4500 2.2Ghz with 2GB RAM running XP to a brand new Core i7 system with Windows 7 64-bit.

After the data was migrated to the new system, all he wanted was his original hard drive from this system and the rest of the computer could be DISPOSED of.

This made for a sweet upgrade for my daughter who had been running a Pentium 4 2.8Ghz HT for about 3 years now that was showing its age when she was playing web based games etc with its Geforce 6200 video card in AGP 8x slot.

I was hoping to move her hard drive from her Pentium 4 to this newer Core 2 Duo Dell, but I only saw SATA ports and a floppy port on the motherboard with no IDE ports. So I had a Qosmio laptop that I gutted 2 hard drives out of that were SATA and one of them went to my system, and the other I used to install XP Pro SP3 clean to her new Core 2 Duo system.

This Core 2 Duo Dell also had either a PCIE 16x 1.0 or 2.0 slot and so I placed a GeForce GT 430 video card in that slot so that it wouldnt struggle with integrated video.

Then when the system was all BUILT up and running I realized that she didnt have sound yet all drivers were installed. I raised the volume to the max and could barely hear the sound. Looked over at the 15 year old HP Speakers that use to connect to the sides of a big CRT and sure enough they were so old that they did not have a amplifier for the speakers.

So I was faced with either buying her a new set of amplified speakers for like $30-$50 or take the Creative Labs CT5801 Sound Blaster out of the old Pentium 4 and place that into this Core 2 Duo and hopefully there are still drivers out there for this 15 year old sound card with XP support.

Swapped this sound card which came from an old HP Pavilion Celeron 500Mhz originally from the late 90s and placed it from the Pentium 4 that was running it prior into this newer Core 2 Duo system and sure enough there are still drivers out there for this card. Driver installed and configuring Windows to make the integrated sound secondary with this Sound Blaster 128 as the primary, and tested the sound and it made me jump because I forgot to lower the volume.... After jumping out of seat when the Sound Blaster literally "Sound Blasted me " from youtube music video, I lowered the volume and was good to go.

I really never thought that I'd still be using this old Sound Blaster years later when I yanked it out of the Celeron 500Mhz many years ago. But this Sound Blaster is the older type of sound card with an amplifier built in to drive speakers, when just about all of them today require the set of speakers or audio system itself to amplify a weaker signal from the PC Audio Jack or assume that a low draw headset is plugged in which isnt driving a 10 watt speaker set etc.

So the Sound Blaster 128 lives on until PCI slots become obsolete or the sound card or speakers fail. I have my bet on the fact that the card and speakers will probably RUN FLAWLESS until the end of PCI supported motherboards...LOL

Also was nice to pull off this upgrade for my daughter and not have to spend any money in the process. She is loving gaming on it with no lag. Minecraft use to be jumpy with frame rate with the GeForce 6200 video card and its extremely smooth with the GeForce 430GT. World of Warcraft also runs very well with the normal graphics settings with 40 to 60 fps, whereas before with the Pentium 4 2.8Ghz and GeForce 6200 at lowest graphics settings she was getting 15-25 fps and so it was laggy. Lag is all gone now

Here is the Sound Card that lives on that has built in amplifier to drive speakers directly and WORKS with XP : http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/bph06255.pdf

In the many years dealing with Creative Labs products I have only seen 1 sound card die and I have a strong belief that it was caused by a stupid user that hooked the output of the sound card up to the output of an amplifier and not the input blowing the sound card that way vs the card just getting up and quitting on use. The person who had me check out this problem years ago was known to make poor decisions such as try to turn a CD ROM for a PC into a CD Player for their car and smoked that when they applied 12VDC to the 5VDC pin of the P connector. Had it been an older CD Rom with the play button and they used a 5 volt regulator to feed the 5VDC off a 12VDC source, they might have been successful. More info on that here: http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/fef31ab6-d2bf-4b30-a0d6-28331b850ac2/transform-a-cdrom-drive-into-a-car-cd-player?forum=studentrockstar

I remember having to write bat files for each game so the game would load proper drivers for the card...fun stuff

Surprised you needed to change it up between games like that. I ended up finding a good configuration to get maximum base memory of around 608k free and everything else loaded into high memory. At one point the system ( 80486 DX4 100Mhz with 8MB RAM) was running with only 590k free and this caused some problems with games that wouldnt run. But once I got the configuration worked out and 608k base memory free with 32k of base memory in use for other features everything was good. There were some games that had to be configured before playing them, but they maintained this info in a data file associated with the EXE file.

I think the only time I ran into an issue with my Sound Blaster 16 ISA Card and the config was when I added a 10 megabit 3Com ISA Network Adapter and the IRQ of my Sound Card was conflicting with the NIC at IRQ 10. This was resolved by moving Sound Card to IRQ 11. And the reason why the sound card as not at IRQ 5 is because my 14.4k modem was set to IRQ 5 because I was using COM 1 for Mouse at IRQ 4, and COM 2 for Scientific Calculator tether ( serial link ) at IRQ 3, Trident 2MB Video Card was using IRQ 9,  and so I was using all the IRQ's I had available. * I then had to reconfigure these games for IRQ 11 vs 10 for sound.

Had I not been in college at the time requiring the Scientific Calculator Serial Tether to COM 2, I could have had my 14.4k modem at COM 2 and IRQ 3, and had my sound card at IRQ 5 which was suggested in the Sound Blaster 16 manual for jumper position, but the 14.4k modem which was also not Plug n Play could not be jumpered any higher than IRQ 5.

It all worked, but with no more free IRQ's there was no adding anything else to that 486 computer. I suppose I could have placed the internal modem onto COM 2 or COM 4 for IRQ 3 to share the IRQ 3 with the serial tether, but it would be one device at a time and not both and there were times when I would be working through AOL 2.5 dial-up over 14.4k and need to check my college black board system which was more like a HTML bulletin board and work at the same time printing out plotted graphs with my wide Epson LQ 1050+ Dot Matrix Printer with tractor feed paper etc.

Carmaggedon was about the maximum game that system could run back then, and this game had its own setup feature to detect or manually configure the sound card to run with the game. I had to upgrade to a Pentium and more memory to play Quake etc. The 486DX4 100Mhz was a good CPU 20 years ago, but the Pentium's had it beat in performance. I got the 486DX4 100Mhz with a motherboard and 8MB RAM for just $40 off of a friend who upgraded and it was far better than the 386SX 40Mhz I was running prior which was given to me from another person who also upgraded and was looking to give the working motherboard a good home vs tossing it away. And that beat the pants off of the 286 12Mhz I was running prior that I bought in 1993 for $120 used with 40MB Hard Drive..LOL

Just curious as to what games were picky requiring special batch files for them?

Solve : Using cell as hotspot?

Answer»

I live in the country and my internet reception has been getting patchy at best. I'm thinking of getting a cell signal booster and using my cell as a hotspot for my internet. Does anyone have any suggestions about a signal booster. I'm trying to KEEP costs down but want something that will do the job. I've been looking at an  Uniden U60 2000 Sq.Ft Cellular Signal Booster on Amazon. Any thoughts about it? Our house is a 2 story and about 1000 sg ft and I only need the internet on the main floor. I would also like to know if I can use my router if I use my cell as a hotspot? THANKS for any suggestions. Some questions.
Where do you live?
How do you now get internet?
Who is your cell provider?

What brand of cell phone do you have?
And have you used it as a 'hot spot' before?

As for you router, chances are it will not help a bit.

In many parts of the USA Verizon is the best choice for Internet via Cell towers. This is not an endorsement. And it may not even APPLY to you.
http://www.verizonwireless.com/accessories/signal-boosters/
Notice t they recommend external antennas as well as powered boosters. What they show represents the sort of things you  can also find from other companies.

In my expert opinion , you ought to try the antenna options first.

I live in Saskatchewan, Canada. I get my Internet from a company called Your link  and it's from a line of sight tower.  They have upgraded their hardware to be faster but the signal doesn't go through trees as well as the old hardware.   I get my cell service from Sask tel and I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 2. I have used it as a hot spot a couple of times when my Internet was down with good results.
Why do you suggest the antenna options over the hot spot?  I only have one other satellite option that is quite pricy.

The booster I'm looking at has an antenna on the roof with the booster in the house and the cell signal is strong on the roof.
Thanks for any advice Quote

If your local Cell provider says it is OK, go for it.

The OP is in an area outside of the dense urban areas where boosters are can cause possible problems with  other services.
Others READING this should not assume that a Cell Booster is the best choice for general use.

Here are some links I found meaningful.
http://www.tessco.com/yts/knowledge_center/su/fcc-rules-for-cellular-signal-booster-use.html

Now the kicker:
FCC orders 2M people to power down cell phone signal boosters (Updated)
Quote
The Federal Communications Commission today enacted a set of rules governing the sale and deployment of wireless signal boosters, devices consumers use to improve cell phone signals. More than 2 million of these devices are in use across the country, and until now consumers who bought them could just turn them on and let them WORK their magic.
Not anymore. Anyone who buys one of these devices from now on must seek the permission of carriers. Even the 2 million devices already in use must be turned off immediately unless their owners register them. The FCC states in an FAQ:
Did the FCC recently adopt new rules for signal boosters?
Yes. The FCC recently adopted new rules to improve signal booster design so these devices won’t cause interference to wireless networks. The FCC also adopted new rules about what cell phone users need to do before using a signal booster.
...
That is why I recommend the antenna for users in metropolitan areas.
Small passive antennas do not require registration. Thanks so much for all the info. As far as I know we don't have to register boosters yet but I will look into it. My cell provider never mentioned anything when I talked to them last week. It's just coming into effect for you guys so we will have a couple of years before it gets here lol. I don't think it would be an issue even if I had to register it because of where we live(in the boonies lol).

I just bought a new router last month and was hoping to be able to use it if I do go with the cell hot spot. I have a very limited amount of knowledge on this subject but could I connect my cell to the router with the USB and have wifi?

Thanks again for all the help

To my knowledge, there is not easy way to tie your cell phone to a router. Unlike Ethernet, USB has its own protocol and usage.
Normally a cell phone as a hot spot has a range of about 10 meters, more or less. Of course, you can carry  the cell phone around inside your house. Ok thanks for all your help.  After learning about hot spots I now find out I can only get 10 gb a month with it. Sometimes living Iin the country has its drawbacks!
Thanks again

Solve : Troubleshooting a slimline PS3?

Answer»

Is this the proper forum for a little help troubleshooting a slimline PS3 unit? Its my daughters, will be 2 years old this Christmas. It has started randomly shutting down. I have cleaned it out, quite dusty. The fan I see in TOP of the (cooling fan, I'm assuming) seems to be a little noisy. How does a person check the hard drive or a failing power supply?

I saw the other forum for games, wasn't SURE which SPOT to put this, so just started it here. And I also see there is no actual discussion forum marked for gaming console issues. So I realize I may get no where. But I know there are some brains here too, I am thinking someone on here knows something about them.

thanksIt appears from my research on your behalf that this is a fairly common problem with that model. Certainly cleaning (as you say you have done) can help. However have you considered buying a cooler pad (like those used with laptops)? That seems to have worked for some. When you say the fan is noisy is that a change in sound or is it just because the fan is running a top speed trying to cool the unit?truenorthFordtruckmaniac...

Solve : Sony BDP-470 with Media Server & USB External Hard Drive?

Answer»

Posting this here because not much info on google on this. Someone might find it helpful.

I wanted to connect my Sony Blu-ray player to my computer to be able to remove a HTPC that was being used to free up an HDMI port, and found a work around, BUT not without complications.

Ok first off the player I have is linked below: Sony BDP-470

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882105427

Ok next I will mention the USB ports on this player. There is a Front and a Rear USB port and you can play movies through these ports such as MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 movies as tested. However it will not play AVI videos.

Secondly the USB port can only address FAT32 partitioned Flash Drives or Hard Drives, so there is a limitation of 32GB per port. This is a sad limitation and I haven't found a work around, as for I have about 260GB of videos, which means that I would have to create either 9 USB sticks with videos or find another solution.

Ok, now for the solution to get past the 64GB BARRIER ( 32GB per USB port x 2 )

The player can (see) address (DLNA) devices on the LAN and access to play or view music, movies, and photos. There are free DLNA server options out there both Windows and Linux based, BUT, this Sony player does not handshake with them.

I then moved onto testing DLNA server software that was trialware and came up with a match that worked well and the trial period was very generous. 14-days to test before you have to buy to continue using it. This is Wild Media Server.

http://www.wildmediaserver.com/

This software can run on computers that run Windows OS as old as Windows 2000 all the way forward to Windows 8, as well as it claims to work on Linux thru Wine. My test box for this software is the following:

Athlon II X2 215 2700Mhz Dual-Core
2GB DDR3 1333Mhz
500GB SATA II HDD
Windows XP Pro SP3

Installation was easy, however not without complications getting it to work.

Started the service and then walked to the livingroom to see if it works.

While the Blu-ray player found it right off displaying the MAC address as well as the system name of the computer with a logo for the Wild Media Server that was hosting this DLNA Server Service, when selecting this private DLNA server there were menu options to select from such as listing movies alphabetically, but when selecting this, there were no files to be found.

Going back to the server to see why its not displaying videos from the HDD of this server I noticed that the share location that my movies were located at was shadowed out by default. So I moved my mouse pointer over this and it gave an option to unhide. So I unhid this and then stopped the service and restarted the service and went back out to livingroom and now there was an option in the menu to select for my movies. Selecting this, I saw that it only listed MPEG-2 movies, but did not list the AVI or MPEG-4 movies.

So since it listed the MPEG-2 movies, I figured lets see if it will play a movie and so I selected it and then it played it.

Now for some strangeness. While I know that my player supports MPEG-4 movies since they will play off of the flash drive in the USB port, they are not listed as an option through this DLNA server. Digging deep into this Wild Media Server I see that it has a transcoding feature, so I figure maybe I need to transcode the MPEG-4 movies to MPEG-2 on the fly, so I go and configure this setting a buffer space for the transcoding to happen in which this computer acting as the DLNA server for this player would be able to upon selection of a MPEG-4 movie be able to transcode it to MPEG-2 on the fly to view this movie without swelling a 900MB file to 4GB permanently through the bloat that MPEG-4 to MPEG-2 files swell to. Problem is that this did not SOLVE the problem where you can not see the MPEG-4 movies to select them for the system to know to transcode them to MPEG-2 on the fly in this buffer area of dynamic transcoding in which videos are transcoded upon request and the bloated MPEG-2 is deleted to free up this space for the next transcode request.

One other interesting feature I noticed with this DLNA server software is that when the service starts it searches for ALL network CONNECTIONS. So since I have 2 NICs in this system one with a cross over cable to my gaming system and the other on the dynamic LAN it mounts this DLNA service to both NICs by default. While this is not a problem for my setup, I just figured I'd mention this in case anyone else with more than a single network connection runs into any network problems.

There is also a forum for this software and I created an account and posted some requests for solutions to the hidden MPEG-4 videos which should be listed and I cant figure out why only MPEG-2 files are displayed as playable.

So while its still a work in progress, I figured I'd post here what I have found so far and what works and what doesn't, and will post back when I get more useful info to share with anyone out there that decides that they want to use this feature of their players.I have a Samsung networked TV on my home LAN that has a DLNA client and I have had good results with 2 free products: Plex Media Server, and Serviio Media Server. They both run on PCs. Plex is a double package, it has its own Plex Media Server (PMS) which works similar to DLNA but requires its own client app to be run on a supported smart TV, BR player, or media box. PMS bristles with features including a better GUI than plain vanilla DLNA clients. If your player does not support the Plex PMS client app, the Plex package also has its own optional DLNA server which can run independently of PMS. Both offer transcode and direct play options. I use it for mp4, mpeg2, mkv, avi material. Serviio is a pure DLNA server, and offers transcoding and direct play options too. There are threads on the Plex and Serviio users forums about the Sony BDP-S370/470 series.

Unlike Wild, they are both free, as is XMBC which Plex is a fork of. I have found Plex to be the slickest but as with a lot of this sort of thing, you may have to do some digging in the (extensive) forums.

https://forums.plex.tv/index.php/topic/52625-sony-bdp-blu-ray-profile/

http://forum.serviio.org/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=13006

Plex Media Server
https://plex.tv/

Serviio Media Server
http://www.serviio.org/

I see Wild uses the open source Ffmpeg transcoder, as do Plex, Serviio, and XMBC, so why pay for what you can get free?

Thanks for the info Salmon ... will try those free ones out on my sun/mon weekend in 2 days when i have time to play.  Found some interesting info on my media player the Sony BDP-S470. Info at Sony states why MPEG4 movies wont play through DLNA server. It seems as though there is far more media format support via USB direct than over a DLNA server service.

http://esupport.sony.com/US/p/support-info.pl?info_id=959&mdl=BDPS470

Also interesting that they have this claim:

Quote

Notes:

Not all files are guaranteed to play.
A part of a file type may not play back.
Wi-Fi® built-in players require an 802.11 home network and content stored on a DLNA compliant PC or server.
Wi-Fi ready players require a UWA-BR100 USB adapter (sold separately), 802.11 home network, and content stored on a DLNA compliant PC or server.
Player that do not support wireless or the claim does not mention wireless require a home network and content stored on a DLNA compliant PC or server.

So due to this media file type limitation, I may be forced to batch process a bunch of files from one type to a supported type, although I am going to see what format I can go with that is supported for DLNA service play that doesnt kill quality and doesnt cause them to swell up from 800MB to 3.5GB files which the conversion from MPEG4 to MPEG2 would create. I see that Xvid format AVI is claimed to be supported, so i am going to test a few with that. That only doubles their size vs greater than a 4x size increase.

Once I get the files set up for the player then I will move forward with testing the free private DLNA servers that Salmon suggested.

Solve : cc'ing emails to myself.?

Answer»

I have 4 computers with 4 email addresses all with the same ISP   I would like copies of my sent emails to be cc'd to all computers but windows live mail WONT let me do this. is there a way of doing it.
So, you have the 4 email accounts set up in all 4 computers as POP/POP3 accounts. Am I correct?  If so, are the email accounts in all computers set to "leave a copy (of the message) on the server"?  I suspect not; I suspect the setting in them is to delete the message from the server.  We need to know the settings in your email clients to advise further

If all the email CLIENT in all computers is set to delete the message from the server, meaning delete it after it has been downloaded to *a* computer,  then a CC of an outgoing message should be received by one of the computers.  SINCE a retrieval by any of the computers would cause the message to be deleted from the server, then the message is no longer on the server to be retrieved by any other computer.  You see what's happening here?

If WLM is, indeed, not allowing you to put any of your own email addresses in the CC: box, I suspect that is because it is an illogical situation, especially for POP accounts.  Exactly what happens when you try to put one of your own email addresses in the CC: box?

Another type of email account, an IMAP account, is what you should have to accomplish what you want to do.  IMAP is designed to synchronize email accounts among multiple computers.  However, some, or perhaps many, ISPs do not support IMAP.  If this is the case, a non-ISP account, i.e. from an email service that offers IMAP accounts, can be the solution.

Do you want to use all 4 computers to both send and receive, or do you normally use one computer to send and you merely want the messages on the computers for viewing purposes?

Another option, in addition to the IMAP mentioned above, is to access your email accounts via web browser.  This way, the same email folders and messages would appear on screen regardless of what computer was used, including computers besides the ones you own as long as login by username/email ADDRESS and password are entered.
I have them set at various retentions. up to 50 days  (from 5 to 50 days)

when I send an email  I often have information in the sent email that I want to refer to  but often I am MILES away so if I could cc to myself I could retrieve the emails and store them indefinitely.

each computer downloads the same sets of emails.  so sending a cc to myself solves the problem.

but windows live mail says I am sending it to one of my own email addresses so brings up an error.

You don't have to use live mail.
If you have an account with another provider, you can send with that and do cc to you live.com account.
This article has some issues, but gives you an idea of what is out there.

Look for a good provider that lets you leave mail on the server until you delete it.

He did not say he has a live.com email account.  He said he is using Windows Live Mail (WLM), an email client from Microsoft.  WLM, like other email clients, can be used with any POP or IMAP email account.

I have WLM installed on my Win 7 system but have been using Microsoft Outlook 2007 for email.  So, I have not tested WLM to see whether I get the same result as topsy99.  However, I have tried this with Outlook 2007 and it lets me send, i.e. CC, messages to me.

when I send an email  I often have information in the sent email that I want to refer to  but often I am miles away so if I could cc to myself I could retrieve the emails and store them indefinitely.
You have not responded to my comment about accessing your email accounts via web browser.  Why not do that when you are away from the office? I created a gmail account and I cc to that and it forwards to my email . thanks for your solution

Well its more than just browsers... it depends on the users web activity and if they know how to safely operate a computer. For years I have heard people in IT frustrated claiming that they should make a drivers license for computers and people are unable to use a computer at a business or at home until they pass the computer drivers test.

But instead computers are more like a child wants a computer and so the parent buys him one and he crashes it and then the parent pays for the damages and frustrated that little bobby filled the tank of fuel from the questionable shady side of town where fuel is free and the fuel has something bad that chokes up the engine.

The teenager wants a computer and the parent or kid buys it, and same ISSUE. Hey there is free fuel over in the shady part of town, fills it up and wham same problem or even better while he was filling up he didnt see the masked hijacker who slipped into the back seat. The kid drives off and down the road the man jumped out from the back seat and throws the kid into the back seat while he is screaming no no no no as pop ups are happening and the hijacker is having his way with the computer car driving it eratically.

A woman who has to use a computer for her new job. She has one at home but doesnt use it much as for her husband is the main driver. She is given a Manual Transmission Porche to drive at the business and is use to an Automatic Escort. The business is sink or swim, and she luckily learns the stick shift and picks up speed and soon she is racing on the autobahn and the company is happy with her driving. She then needs to check to see where she needs to drive to next, and the boss states that she needs to ignore the GPS as for there is a problem with it and in exactly 2 miles drive as fast as you can to get there and make a hard left because you won $1,000,000 and need to collect it within the next 5 minutes or else its going to be given to some other lucky individual. She fails to notice that the message was not sent by her boss, but actually from [email protected] and so she watches the odometer and hey its the 2 mile mark and she veers a hard left and crashes. When she gets out of the computer car she then looks at the message from her boss in total confusion and then realizes that it was a spoofed message and now she needs to walk the walk of shame and tell the boss what happened.

And in all fairness I must also include a guy making a similar mistake. Since I am not singling anyone TYPE of person out.

So the guy gets a job and he wants to  get paid, but doesnt want to drive the company truck. He finds that there are these illegal apps that he can run that allows him to sit back and listen to music or watch a movie while the computer car does his job. Everything is great, boss is happy that he is getting his work and every day at work is a party with food and drinks and also the occasional video game that also comes with these apps that drive his computercar. Well the shady area of town where he was getting these neat tools from to do his job for him are hacks and the data that he is getting with them are illegal music, movies, and video games and hey who is going to find out as long as the work is done, hey I was working. Well he stops and picks up another bunch of free work hacks and other free illegal data and goes for another ride. This time surprise surprise the computer car stops and every electronic component on it is turning on and off like its the exorcist and in addition to that inappropriate content is playing on the display and there is no way to stop it. He frantically in a sweat decides to pull the battery and reset the computer car and the minute it boots back up its back doing the same thing with more inappropriate content playing and flashing and adult noises etc. He brakes down and starts to cry because he realizes that this is going to cost him his job as well as he may go to prison for all the illegal data that is on the company computer car.

In the end its always the phone call to the boss who calls the computer mechanics to fix the problem or the people coming directly to the mechanic to help.

And many IT professionals feel that with a computer drivers license it may be SOMEWHAT presentable. However we can not prevent intentional or people from making mistakes when driving the computers. And no matter how many air bags, autopilot, GPS, and other features to try to prevent crashes, people either always find a flaw in the safety or a security flaw comes to surface and its all reactive to try to prevent getting hit with it.

Those in IT are faced with the frustration also of limiting users abilities and also allowing them to do their jobs and yet, the users and or managers involved will demand to be able to do something even if it comes at a level of risk. But whenever that warning has gone unheard and the people crash, its never the users faults, its always IT's fault for allowing it to happen.

You touched on- though mostly as an analogy- the idea that people should be "licensed" in order to use a computer- in the same way as a car.

Personally I find there to be a large difference in terms of the possible damage that can be caused. People like to pretend that data loss is huge and catastrophic- and it certainly can be. But I would say that there is never a time or place where any amount of data loss can do more damage than a hurtling hunk of metal moving at high speeds. Poor driving skills can and do kill, maim, and have catastrophic after-effects to the people involved. That is why the operation of a Motor-vehicle requires some assurance that you know what you are doing.

A Home user using their PC at home, however- while they could in a way affect others- say by becoming a botnet zombie- I think any sort of idea to require computer use to be "licensed" is over-exaggerating. Under no circumstances will a person making poor computing decisions kill or injure anybody, except in very specific circumstances. This is in contrast to VEHICLES, where a poor driving decision can easily result in deaths, injuries, and extensive damage.

Computers may be central to many businesses, but files are not people. They don't have families.

More to the point- requiring a license to use a Computer doesn't seem any different than having similar requirements for ovens or Toasters, and I think we can agree that the idea of requiring a license to be able to heat bread might be a bit silly.

Your list is behind on Chrome and Opera, too, and, therefore, I suspect it is behind on others also.

Solve : Best stores/supliers of computer parts?

Answer»

Hi, I'm looking for some computer parts for my laptop and was wondering if you guys knew of any good suppliers, who sell spare parts. I'm specifically looking for Lenovo laptop parts. ThanksHere's a source found via a GOOGLE search; http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/accessories/accessories-parts/Good used parts I have used Amazon as well as eBay. With Amazon more often than eBay. For some special OEM parts like daughter BOARDS etc, I bought direct through a Certified local computer shop that handles IBM, Toshiba, HP/Compaq, and Apple.

I went with a brand new daughter board for $40 through local computer shop because the used daughter boards were $30 and I didnt want to cut corners and chance installing a board with worn or damaged USB connections, and the customer had no problem playing the $40 for the part + 1.5 hours labor to replace it properly.

Solve : Where to Buy Old (Used) Computers.?

Answer»

Where to Buy Old (Used) Computers.

This may not be the time to buy a new computer. It you just need to CHECK the NEWS  and your e-mail, old PCs are an economical way to add a second computer to your household.

This is a short list.  Not in  any order. These companies do a lot of business and should make some effort to protect their own future. You have to investigate.

These SITES sell other products, so you have to search for 'used desktop PC' and find what they offer.

Amazon

e-Bay

Best Buy

Dell

Overstock

Powersource

Geeks

Buy a PC with a new OS. No point in buying one with XP installed. WINDOWS 7 is a very good choice. And look for a warranty. Some come with a one year warranty.

Buying a used item as parts only is not a good idea. Unless  you are really very sure of yourself.

I would find a place place that repairs them and also sells used. You would have a better chance of finding one that WORKS well and a place of recourse if what you bought quits working.
