Hi can you explain what a workstream is in the context of the sentence 'managing workstreams..' ?

At first I thought it was my chair, but of course not. The sound does not happin all the time and when it does it has a "ting" sound like a blade just barely touching a piece of "heating coil" The "ting" COULD come from a multitude of places such as expansion/contraction in the monitor or box or even the noise of a head HITTING a disk in your hard drive (in the good old days his was called a head crash - a major disaster)

Can you be more specific as to where the "ting" thing comes from?Thanks Dusty,
  I removed a wood box that raised the PC up closer to HAND reach. After that I have not heard the tinging. the move would of created more cool air FLOW so i THINK you were on to something with the heat expansion, the intel active monitor was going off way to often. If the problem continues I;m going to set it on the desk top and stair.

well my torrent downloads are pretty slow and i am using bit torrent (i don't know of anything better) and the downloads are slow it going to TAKE 2 days to download 5gb's and right now the speed is average 35kb's and i am running 4.6mbs cable

i was looking around at ways to speed it up and i read about port-forwarding(it says it will speed it up) and so i read how to do it and there's a part where u got to access your router and i don't know how to do that so i looked it up on the linksys website and they tell me that i need to change to a static ip address

#1 should i change my ip address to a static one?

then when i finally log into my router i see a menu that says "application and gaming" and when i click on it it has port forwarding so i fill in the info and the category's are start, end, type, ip address(here's another problem do i have to fill it in) anyway i hit change settings and it pop's up "change successful"i say OK and it logs me back in then i got back to where i just filled in the info and it blank so i reed on the linksys website that i need to restart my computer so i did.

and

i log back in and nothing in the "application and gaming" section did anything

*things i noticed*

1, the log in is for a 192. 168. ... and my ip address is a 68 . ...

2, when i go to set my ip address something goes wrong and it not work(so i set it back)

it's hard to EXPLAIN and i hope i did a good job need any more info let me know and I'll be happy to post it

The slow download you are experiencing may be the RESULT of the site you are D/L from .......... they are not all fast ...... It sounds like you are trying to D/L a movie ...

Let us know what you real D/L speed is based on the test .

i got comcast cable which is 4.8 mbs normally and i didn't see a upload test

and i am still wonderin about the my other questionsscan for trojans/malware/scumware/worms......try pest control/spsysweeper..i did that with norton, spybot, ad-aware, spy doctor,thats_not_ME....  Well based on the speed test , I would say that the problem isnt with your configuration .

Are you using a download manager of some sort ?  It may not be configured correctly . Or it could be the site your D/L from ....some are bad .

dl65  There is nothing wrong with your connection. Bit Torrent has never been very fast.

The more upload you give Bit Torrent, the more download speed you will be given in return. Also routing the Bit Torrent ports through both Firewall and Router will have a positive effect.

If you are connected through a router, you do not need to change your IP ADRESS as it is most likely assigned to your computer by the DHCP service that often comes with the Router.

If you are not connected through a router, changing your IP adress will have little effect as it is most likely assigned to you by your ISP.

I suggest you go to http://www.howstuffworks.com and read the articles on Networking.

You have no problems with your network, you need to understand how it all works.

Hi, very INTERESTING site.  
PROBLEM #1.  Within the 1st 1/2 hour my computer is turned on, the picture slides to the left, and looks like a piece of film caught inbetween clips......how do you stop that?
And when deleting all the tmp files for Windows 98, in Find Files and folders at Look In C drive, your site says to delet all *.tmp  file that end in  .tmp.  
WOULD this be considered a file that describes the above:  ffff07b63,,,,:9....    TMP File
      Now, that's a file that ends in .TMP, correct.

Properties>Settings>Advanced
and scratch around in there looking for things that don't look right.

my comuter just started to have really bad quality in displaying images. everything looks too dark, and it definitely is not my monitor settings, because on my dell plasma screen if i press the on monitor control menu, there is bright hues of red and blue and green, like it should be, then what im seeing on the computer is very dark. i tried just turning up all the colors, CONTRAST, brightness, and i just got grey instead of black. i was trying to watch a star wars 3 clip and all i could really make out was the lightsabers, i couldnt seet anything in detail, and those clips are the BEST ones on the net.

Recently, my computer is automatically scrolling down a lot of the time.  It starts as soon as my laptop is loading and I get beeps as if I am holding down a key, which I seem to be able to STOP by pressing the up key a few times (I think I'm stopping it that way, it might be on its own).  In Windows, when I click an icon, the CURSOR will SCROLL down to the items below.  In my browser, the page will scroll down or the options in the address bar.  Actually, today I had the same problem but it was scrolling up instead!  Can someone please help me, this problem is driving me out of my mind!Have you scanned for viruses? Have you tried reinstalling your pointing device drivers?

I have an older 486 desktop with 256m ram and a Maxtor 80G hard drive.  RECENTLY, I tried to upgrade to xp from 98 and it froze in the middle of it all.  When I REBOOTED, it wouldn't load past the first screen.  The cd-rom and floppy drives spin, but stop and won't load anything.  What could it be, and what can I do to get my system to work again?  Please help...You have a 486 computer with 256MB RAM and an 80GB Maxtor? I seriously doubt any mainboard that supports a 486 processor also supports more than 64MB RAM and a Hard Disk over 1GB..

Trying to pull a leg, are we?I'm just looking for answers to my problem, but yes, it is.  I installed the 80G and higher memory myself, and it all worked fine until now.  My mainboard is generic, and I'd tell you more about it myself if I could GO further, but my bios won't save my hard drive size anyway.  It all worked fine with 98, but xp just stopped it in its tracks.  If nobody can help me, I'll just go through library books myself, but I'm hoping someone out there will be kind enough to take me serious.  thank you. When she attempts to speak via microphone, her AUDIO is reproduced as a low 'demonic' growling noise...the audio signal seems to be running very, very slowly!

:-/Now this I am puzzled because I never had this problem before.

The second time to degrag in a two month period since I had the HD formated.

It seems to go as far as only 10% complete and will not go in fater then that.

The first time I set it up at night and went to bed to do its work I woke up at 2 in the morning to shut the computer off and noticed it only went up to 10% and the defrag program was still going.  So, I let it keep going and by 6 a.m. still the same.  So I shut it down.

Today the same just up to 10%. Though it was working up to 25% and then screen went white and then the dots went up to 10%.  so I shut it down.

Over all the computer is still slow even after formating with Gateway.  I scanned for any "you know whats" and nothing.  Search and Destroy "Congratulated me on northin found"

Well, I don't know anymore, if it's not one thing wrong it's another.  It is old from 1998 vintage.  I am about ready to dig a hole in the back yard and get rid of it and pray for financing for another.

I never want to format again it is too time consuming etc.

What to do with this defrag.?

I delete any unnessary files all the time.  This other program says that I have mucho duplicate files on this computer but I don't do anything about that because I don't know what is the real file and the dup.

I always delete temp files and temporary internet files to hopefully get the computer to run faster.

I know I need more RAM, only have 192 and they say it is cheap to buy more well yes if you have the money to buy more.

Now I am not trying to be negative and all that but I am 60 had tripple bypass surgery and I am on a small VA Disability which basically PAYS all but a new computer.

I listen to a radio station weekly from a University teacher of computers and he says that these people who develope all these virises, worms, and trojans etc. can now at times FOOL Norton and the others.

What can we do, they are getting smarter and smarter.  I wish they were on our side, we could really advance computer systems.  It's like a war, a battle that has casualities on both sides.

Anyway what about my defrag problem.

HarryWindows 98?Test the Hard Disk Drive integrity. Obtain diagnostic software from the Hard Disk Drive's manufacturer.Defrag in safe mode with all other programs shut down including antivirus stuff & screensaver.

BTW, a 1998 model computer should be more than enough unless you are trying to run some pretty HI end programs, internet surfing should be fine.Test the Hard Disk Drive integrity. Obtain diagnostic software from the Hard Disk Drive's manufacturer

I would have to probably take out both HD's because the name (manufacturer) is not noticable, I know because I put them in and if the software costs $$$ that would not be in my budget.

This morning I did bring up safe mode and then discovered I could not disable AVG (like Norton) and my blocker.  Had a very difficult time getting out of save mode to the regular mode to disable all running programs.  After an hour + I did get out.

After getting back to safe mode and starting defrag I soon found out that it a STILL was going only up to 10 minutes.  So, enough of that.  Got out of safe mode and back to enabling my AVG program of which I had to start all over with it.  I thought "Windows Patrol" would let me just disable it and add it back later but I guess not.

I wager to bet that "IF I HAD THE FINANCING" TO BUY A P4 FASTER ALL THE WAY AROUND" after 6 months to a year the same problems would persist with the new computer.

We will just run this computer w/o defraging until the end of this year and defrag it by way of cremation.

Possibly when my grandchildren or older or grown our programers, inventors, designers will come up with a computer that is reliable.  Then again I suppose I just had the computer too long.

I do as a hoby to keep me just going is design slide presentations for a few clients.  Should have just stayed of the internet though.

I have unpartioned my hard drive (not using a programme, by deleting it from computer maintence) and i was told that it would automatically reallocate the memory from the drive i deleted into the other drive.
 
But it is now listed as 'unallocated' and i need to know how i can move that free space into my main drive.

if anyone could tell me how- in as simple and detailed a way as possible...that would be great!

another option is to SAVE data/drivers to disk and re-format the c:\ drive...............or use powerquest or another third party software......easy options.....i dont have any disks for xp etc, so i cant reformat.

some things ive read have said that if the disks are 'dynamic' (mine is basic) then the size of them can be changed. would that mean i could then bring the 'unallocated' space into my C drive?

Is this risky? do you know? also, how do i change from 'basic' to 'dynamic'? any idea..?

i did it! thanks for all the help, im totally grateful. I managed to find something in the help pages in computer management- to move space in 'command prompt'- it was kinda SCARY, i tested it with 10mb first, and then chose the option not to specify an amount- and have it automatically include all unallocated space...phew!

can somebody help!! my printer wont feed paper, its a little old hp 610cl Does it even try? What does it do when you try to print? Have you made any changes to your SYSTEM recently?

[glb]Flame[/glb]no i've taken it apart and throughly cleaned and checked for anything that could be blocking it, should the wheels move if the printer is off and i turn them, do the wheels go counter clockwise, or clock wise if i should be able to turn them manually, when i try nothing no movement, do you know were the mechanism  is that turns the rollers,Well, I would have to SEE the printer to make such details confirmed... Why don't you just get a new printer? They are cheap... Maybe this one's just too old... Nothing lasts forever...

the computer came ;up with a blue screen said something about an error there was no time to read it before it shut down know when i turn it on the monitor gose to standby like its not on an the keyboard dose not light up it just beebs three times and then it dose nothing but sit there. it sounds like its running and the disk drive will open and if you put a disk in it trys to read it.

[glb]FLAME[/glb]it will not come on all that happens is you can here the fan start up. then it BEEPS three times and just sits there with the fan going. the moniter reacts as if the computer is not on and it gose into stand by, there is no sound from the speakers and the keyboard dose not come on....So now, your computer will not startup at all? Possibly hard disk failure... Maybe the heat sink has gone dead...

[glb]Flame[/glb]The RAM came with the PC when i bought it not even two years ago it is 256 DDR RAM 266Have dislodge the graphics card.....recheck if able to do so!!..........i  also assume you have opened the case!Ok... Lets have a look at that error message... Right-click on the My Computer icon, and click on Properties... Click on the Advanced Tab... Next, look at the bottm where it says Startup and recovery... You should see a button next to it that says settings.. Click on that... Look for the check box that says automatically restart... Click on that check box, and make sure that it is UNCHECKED... After, click ok, and ok again. Now... Find a way to get that error message, and tell us what it says...

I'm making the DynaComm/Elite software into an MSI.  I don't believe the package is missing any files.  But after I install the MSI and launch the APPLICATION, I only get a flash of it for 1-2 seconds; it will not stay open!  Please help!

Hi, I'm having trouble with the rich text editing system. WHENEVER I go to update my xanga a message pops us that says Rich text (WYSIWYG) editing unable to run on your CURRENT system. And then it switches me to plain text. I'd really like to know why this happens and how to FIX it because without rich text I can't bolc, underline, italicize or add pictures to my entry. I have IE 6 Windows 2000. Pleas help Bold**

Uh, does any1 know how i can get screencaptures off a DVD, cause when i do it, i just get a BLANK screen. I know how to do it off mpeg and AVI videos, just dont know how to do it off DVD's.You can use a PROGRAM such as Fraps.ty, i'll have to try that out

THANKSYOU need to check the manufacturer's website for compatibility http://www.albatron.com.tw/.  Although I didn't see anything, I noticed they use the Nvidia Geforce chipset for their video CARDS, so I don't think you'd have a problem.  It's your call though.  If you need additional help, you can reach me at ResourcePC.

I realise that this has little to do with computers, but I would not know where else to ask and knowing that this forum is frequently VISITED by people who seem to have taken an interest in electro-engineering...

1. Why and how do batteries start leaking when they are inserted into a device that has not been on for a certain amount of time?

2. What would this time period be and by what is it affected?

3. Once a battery starts leaking, is the device considered useless?

4. Once a battery starts leaking, is it wise to simply remove the battery and insert a NEW one?

5. What do you use to clean the substance that battery leaks? What is the name of the substance?This is going off of what I heave HEARD, but...

(1) The acid just sits in the battery, and eventually eats away at the metal covering.

(2) Anywhere from 1/2 a year  (for cheapies) and after (for the better ones).

(3) The battery is, but all you have to do to the device, is clean it up.

(4) Yes and just toss the old one away.

I fdisk"ed" my computer yesterday and installed my os - windows 98se -  and my cable INTERNET, and a router.

Now my screen will only accept 2 or 16 colors... I cant find the drivers or whatever i need to fix it to a 256...

cakki It sounds like you have no drivers installed for your video card, check in your device manager and see what it says.device manager has a lot of places to go ... and i've been to almost all of them... under other devices it shows 2 with yellow exclamaition points. i also WENT to monitors and i have 4 plug and play and one mx50 ....

cakkiIn your device manager, look under display adapters for an entry, right click on it & select properties.Have you got the CD driver disk for video card?  Open the box and find out the make of your card then download the driver from the net on another computer if yours is not ready for the net
Without knowing more about your computer, try start, settings, control panel, add new hardware and look for video adaptor to add in.You could also download 'belarc advisor', run it & you may find out what your video card is.i want to thank all of you...i got my video back and now i cant find my sound

You should be able to fix it the same way you fixed your video drivers.
The HP thing is probably splashed up from the bios, I'd guess you could turn it off if it bothers you. Quote

I have a detailed listing of persons and i need copy it into word however when I do a slect all and a copy and paste it all comes out as gobbly goo.  Can anyone help? THANKING you in anticipation. Looks like i'll be searching for an Information Technology employment opportunity sooner than EXPECTED. My employer has informed me that everyone with my JOB classification will be out of a job before the end of July (there are more than 100 of us).

Working in IT will be a career change for me, however, i have a B.A. degree in communications and have been taking IT classes nights and weekends and online for about five years.  I'm A+ and Network+ certified and am working TOWARD my first MCP.

Question: Does anyone who is working in IT have any advice on how to make myself more marketable?  I'm not CONSIDERING relocating from Indiana and already have some leads, but any opinions will be appreciated.

My hubby and I just had this argument tonight.  He used to be a strickly pc man until he thought he made a  valid point about our present computer.  We have WINDOWS ME, which I've learned recently, it sucks!  He suggested perhaps we should consider switching to a MAC - the odasity!   I said that we should GET a new operating system (Windows XP) or a new computer but his response was "you're always trying to reach for that Golden Goose that will make our computer problems disappear".  I've always strongly believed in the PC.  Please, somebody convince me that I'm right!I sit here in awe at the speed & stability of my work computer , it's nothing flash.

The last BSoD I saw was on a 486 with Win98.Windows ME is a piece of crap.  Tell me something... how old is your hardware that you're running ME on?  You may get away with just buying the XP OS and installing it.  Post your CPU, Video card, and RAM info for us.My CPU is Pentium III, video card is Creative SB Live!, & Ram is 256MB of Ram.  The hardware is 5 years old.  I hope I got all the specs right, SINCE I'm sort of new to this. You haven't a lot of Ram , but if its that age its probably SD pc133 ram and it's fairly inexpensive.

Win2000 is far less demanding than xp.  Your PIII w/256MB RAM will operate with no problem with WinXP.  I've been using WinXP-Pro on a PIII-500 w/160MB RAM with no problems at all and it's actually faster than Win2k-Pro.  It boots up in half the time.

dl65  The problem with buying PCs from the store or directly from Dell is that they don't ship you the stand-alone OS on a cd.  They usually give you a restore disc.  Plus, you're not going to be able to have XP on your new machine, and install the same XP license on a different machine because both will need to be activated with M$.  I recommend just buying the full XP version, not the upgrade version, and install that on your current machine.  Your hardware is fine, I was running XP on a PII 400 with 256 mb RAM and it ran fine.  Also, I find that Windows 2000 takes too long to boot, and that the OS slows down after being on for awhile.  XP is much better!  Of course if you have the money, might as well buy a new computer

I think you deserve another star.  I had forgotten that the CD provided is only a restore disc.  Now, I've seen XP home edition (?) and XP pro.  The difference is the pro is ~$100 more (~$300). Not sure which to get.

Recently my computer has been attacked at least 10-15 times daily.  I checked the IP address for the attacker and found that it's my ISP's home office.

Why WOULD this be happening?

dl65  I'm getting port scanned 10-15 times a day too and it's coming from my own server as well.  
My firewall shows...

Somebody is scanning your computer.
Your computer's TCP ports:
3410, 139, 445,  and 135 have been scanned from 202.172.109.16

... and I've just received 3 scans in the last 15 minutes.
Tha actual ports being scanned varies but it's normally about 8-10 different ports. Weird My Norton firewall shows statistics in three area.  Personal firewall, Content blocking & and Parental Control.

Under personal firewall there are three catagories of statistics.  These are labeled: Last attacked on(date & time of attack); recent intrusion attempts(How many); most frequent attacker(IP Address for attacker).  

This is where I'm getting the information I posted earlier.  

Please advise.

Port scan alerts

Most folks on the Internet since April 2004 have been seeing constant port scan alerts on their SPF.

These are some of the CURRENT Virus / Worms infecting machines and then trying to communicate out to others. They tend to look for similar IP NUMBERS within their own ISP ranges, that’s why it looks to folks as if their ISP is scanning them. These are just other ISP customer machines that are infected. A number of folks have reported getting DoS (Denial of Service) alerts from SPF – DoS is when multiple machines are firing packets at your machine, and trying to ‘overload’ the system’s resources. Because so many folks have reported excessive port scans, it looks like some ISPs are very highly infected with these worms, and so SPF is seeing what would normally amount to a DoS attack.

I came home last night to find a blown fuse had shut off my computer and on restart the screen repeatedly WENT to black.  The only way I could get it to restart was by going into the BIOS Power Settings and setting "After Power Failure" to "STAY off."  This is a recurring problem that I thought I had somehow fixed a couple of months ago.  

However, when I went into my tv program folder, most of the shows had disappeared.  My collection of Deadwood, Sopranos and Oz were all gone but Carnivale REMAINED, THOUGH they are all the same file types.  Videos in other folders haven't been affected.  What's more, no memory has been freed up, and a search can't find the missing files.  Norton has found no virus.  

I have Pentium IV, Windows XP.  The files are all on a secondary hard drive (which occasionally is not recognized by Windows on start up).  Other files on the HD are available.  "Check Disk for Errors," reports "Windows was unable ...".  

So what gives?  Anybody have ideas?  Theories? Advice?

The same problem with the blown fuse occurred and I couldn't get Windows running, not even after changing power settings.  Had to restart using 6 diskettes.  Any suggestions on what to do about that also WOULD be greatly appreciated.  Word

You might not like what I have to say, but... You need to have your heat sink inspected... Probably by a professional at an electronics store... My guess is that the heat sink is not working properly, and your computer is OVERHEATING, thus making it shut down... My second guess here, is that your power SUPPLY might be dying... However... Try the heat sink first...

I am using two pc at HOME, ONE is running Win XP and one is running Win 98.  I use  SMC 7004VBR  router to collect two of them on the Win XP there is no problem to collect to internet but I can't collect on Win 98, so please help me how to set it up.

I think there is a file on XP that you need to put onto the win98 machine & run it.student004....try this on the win 98 pc ......click start ...then Run .....when the run BOX opens ...type in "CMD" and press enter ......then when the new window opens type in "ipconfig/all"   and enter  tell us exactly what is displayed .
It may well be that you must give your router the MAC address of the win 98 pc ......... do you have the router manual , it will tell you how to do that .

Can anyone help me?  When I start my computer it immediately says "Can't FIND primary drive 0."  Then it tells me to hit F2 and go to the set-up.  I did that and restored all the defaults but it still won't boot.  Then I tried going back and tweaking the drives (enabling one, auto the other, BLAH blah blah, I don't understand what I'm doing) and it still won't boot.  I'm so frustrated I'm about ready to throw it out the window.  Does anyone have any ideas?

The computer that was given my daughter seems to be working good now, after the re-install of XP Home except for this error message that keeps popping up.

("C:\ProgramFiles\BackWeb\BackWeb Client\6.2.3.66\Program\frcom.dll",error code 126).

It developed this after running Adaware and Spybot throught it after the re-load of XP. It seems I remember seeing "backweb" something when I ran Adaware. I just QUARANTINED the "critical issues" after the first running, did not delete them.

And BTW it is virus free now. It showed nothing after running the AV through it after the re-install. And that was with the "restore" function turned off.

I really appreciate the help I have gotten from this web-site. It has brought this computer, that had just sat for MONTHS totally unusable, back to life.

Any ideas on this one?

I can CHECK the next time I am at her house to see if backweb is in the add and remove programs.

As I mentioned, it seems I seen "backweb" in the issues found in the Adaware scan. It did not flash this error message until after the Adaware and Spybot scan.

Sorry that you have this problem I would get the power supply checked out and then try the new one. If fitting a new power supply doesn't fix things then you may have a really serious problem.

If you are really lucky it might be covered under household insurance if you have comprehensive cover.

I have been having probLems running scandisk and defrag... I figured out that if I shut down programs running in the background I can sucessfuLLy do it but I have found a coupLe of programs running that I do not know what they are ( by HITTING CTRL..ALT..DEL ) they are : WTOOLSA and WSUP they ALso wont shut down right away, I have to hit "end task" a few times to get it done !! can anyone heLp ?..........ALso...as you can see ....this is reaLLy bizzar... DuaneWSUP and WTOOLSA are hijacking software.  You need to get and RUN an anti-spyware program even though these are know to stop you from accessing anti-spyware sites.

You could start with Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta but you will need to be on Windows 2000 or XP.  You can get it here....
