Solve : can't set resolution higher than 480/640 & 8 b?

???I have windows xp and i can not set my screen resolution higher than 640-480 and my bits won't go higher than 8 bits. I can't  run alot of my programs
can you helpDid this just start happening?  If you right-click on your desktop and click on properties, then the settings tab, what does is say as your video card?  If you need additional assistance, you can reach me at ResourcePC.

1. Is the videocard detected by Windows?
2. Have you INSTALLED the correct DRIVERS?type dxdiag in the run box.........   or if applicable type msinfo32  in the runbox or  GOTO control panel/click  the system information icon......error codes should be listed.......in hardware.....o
