Microsoft VS. GM

At a recent computer expo (1996 COMDEX), Bill Gates compared the computer industry
to the automotive industry by stating: "If GM had kept up with technology like the
computer industry has, we would all be driving cars that cost $25.00 and get 1,000
miles to the gallon."

In response to Bill's comment, General Motors issued a press release making the following
statement: "If we (GM) had kept up with technology like the computer industry has,
we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:

1) For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice per day.

2) Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.

3) Your car would occasionally stop on the freeway without reason. In order to get
started again, you would have to pull off to the side of the road, close all the
windows, shut off the car, restart it and open all the windows again. For some unknown
reason, you would simply do this without question.

4) Occasionally, executing a manoeuvre, such as a left turn, would cause your car
to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the
engine.

5) Only one person could use the car at one time unless you bought "Car95" or "CarNT",
but then you would also have to buy more seats.

6) The new seats you would need would force everyone to have the same size *censored*.

7) You would press the "start" button to shut off the engine.

The oil warning light, water warning light, and alternator warning light would
all be replaced by a single "Unidentified System Error" light.

9) The air bag would ask your freshly mangled body "are you sure?" before going off.

10) Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse
to let you back in until you simultaneously lifted the driver-side door handle, turned
the key, and grabbed the radio antenna.

11) The radio antenna would be internally mounted on the passenger side of the car.

12) Buying a new car would force you to also purchase a new set of Deluxe Rand McNally
road MAPS, despite the fact that you neither need nor want them. Attempting to delete
this option would immediately cause your car's performance to diminish by 50% or
more.

13) Every time GM INTRODUCED a new car, people would have to learn to drive all over
again because none of the old controls would function in the new car.

14) Macintosh would make a car that was five times faster, ten times more reliable
and easier to mantain, twice as easy to drive, but would only run on five percent
of the roads." The oil warning light, water warning light, and alternator warning light would all be replaced by a single "Unidentified System Error" light.

I accidently powered my gateway notebook with a cisco AC adpater. (greater OUTPUT than the appropriate adapter) My computor was off at the time and the battery was out of juice. The charge light went on then off. Now I can't turn on the pc at all. No lights, no nothing. I fear the worst.  Any advice? -mtmanTry the correct adapter you may be lucky........no such LUCK! You could give this  a go it may work.........there should a reset hole on the laptop.....on the side of the case somewhere......plug the proper adapter in and .....stick a pen in the re-set....hole.....GOT nothing to loose.....but time....taken the battery out and just use the adapter....suggestions to try if you wish to? i already download directX9.0c but i STILL cannot play the games that use directX9.0c. can someone tell me whats wrong?    Does your computer MEET the game requirements?

Have you checked the game site for FIXES and patches?The VIDEOCARD may need updated drivers or it may not support DirectX 9.0C at all.

When I save my pictures onto my computer and try to upload them on photobucket I can't find the pictures there. I know I look in the right folder because I've checked over and over. It's just happened over the last week. I am able to find them when I use MSN but when I try to upload them it's like they don't exist. They don't even show up on 'My Computer' either. ???I need help with an HP color Laserjet 4500 N. After replacing the transfer kit, I followed the instructions on how to reset the counter. But I find out that there's no "New transfer kit reset if completed" in the reset menu of the PRINTER. If there is another way, please tell me. I like to use Irfanview when editing photos. I do not do any professional work, only resizing, renaming and occasionally adjusting quality.

I have a problem trying to configure PhoenixBios 4.06.04 on a HP LC-2000-U3 NetServer. There are no options for booting after AC back event, after a power supply failure.
The OS is SUSE Linux. Should I UPGRADE the BIOS? Is there any other WAY of configuring power MANAGEMENT options ?
Go to the bios setup.....depending on the make/model and look for the apm......or go to the control panel/ click the  power options icon it should READ never in all the boxes......or its up to to set it as you wish...hth...

Alright then, I'm familiar with the concept of port FORWARDING with NAT, i.e. to direct traffic to a web server within an NAT environment. What I want to know is: Is it possible to set up a machine to redirect traffic on a specific port to an external server on a different port. For example, I'm at WORK, with a HORRIBLY restrictive firewall with only ports 21 & 80 open. I want to hit the IRC channel here running on port 6667, and I have a Mac OS X box sitting at home which *should* be more than capable of doing the job. so the connection should look like this:

(me at work) -> TCP connection to port 80 ->  (My home machine) -> TCP connection to IRC server on port 6667 ->  (IRC server)

Is this possible & what is this type of connection called?

The computer worked FINE yesterday, shut it down normally.
Today computer will go to "DELL Logo" screen and hang up. Light on drive D: (CD) is on, TRAY will not slide out upon pressing button.
Inserted system disk, restarted, goes to DELL Logo sceen and stops.
Inserted Windows CD, restarted, same as above.
Held down CTRL key, will not go into Safe Mode.
Any suggestions WOULD be appreciated, thanks, norbt.First, do you have virus protection? Rescue disks made? Second, I don't think you press the CTRL key for safe mode, I think it's F8... Third, have you made any changes to your system recently?

I tried it once more in the evening and it it worked fine!! My computer is working fine again.

Leave the cdrom/dvd drive drawers out. to increase airflow FROR the hard drive etc....just mind the knees/legs.dont BANG them.........and dont use it a coffee/drinks holder.


Load of cash some made .....because they use it as such....and burnt their legs......and sued the cdrom drive makers!!That would increase dust INTAKE. It would be better to have a fan sucking hot air out. That way, no large pieces of dirt can get into the fans and case.

merlin_2, if you leave your cd/dvd drive open, you will fill it with dust. Not much, but enough to create problems when using properly the unit. And how much air will flow through an closed case, on which you just open a side? (I am reffering to cd/dvd drive)Well any airflow contains particles of dust/grime/pollen/*censored* ash etc.....but any air flow is better to aid   the COOLING PROCESS..of course newtons law does come in play>....but as yet no one can beat water-cooling....?

First time here, completely clueless about anything technical and in desperate need of help, of course...

I got my first computer last year, a new Toshiba Sattellite laptop. It came with everything built-in and a manual; pretty much a plug it in and go sort of thing... therefore, I managed, after much trial & error, to get it up and running, including an internet connection using SBC DSL.

Last week I bought a Gateway EV700 destop at a garage sale (for what I thought was a great price) because I wanted my husband and I to both be able to be connected to the internet at the same time.

The guy I bought it from had it connected to the internet. So, I could see that it worked OK and he assured me that it would be simple to connect it when I got it home.

Hum...simple for him I'm sure. For me, I'm totally lost.

I got it all set up and it is working, other than I don't know how to get the internet connection to happen.

Can someone PLEASE give me an idea of what I need to do? I think I might need a ROUTER or to set up a network, or some such equally scary thing.

Also, if I have to set up a network anyway (just the thought of it is mind boggling...), can it be a wireless network so that my laptop can be used anywhere in the house?

Anyone think they can explain this to me in "simple, baby, this chick obviously doesn't have a clue" terms?

You didn't say the model of your Toshiba Satellite. You didn't say the operating system for Gateway EV700. Are you sure that the computer is a Gateway EV700? Because I FOUND on net it is just the monitor... And not the computer with those other very important parts... Processor, motherboard, network card etc. I'm most interested in what type of network card it has.
You didn't say how many ports the modem has on it... (how many places on which you can insert the network jack for your computers).
If you want to connect two computers to internet, yes, you will need a router. If you want a wireless network you will need an access point ; I suppose that your laptop already has a wireless network adapter integrated.

Don't feel overwhelmed by what I said. Just say what you know, answer our questions, ask where you don't know something, ask something else  and we will TRY to solve. Ok?  How Home Networking Works

OLD computer parts are in very low demand.. Do not think that you'll make huge profits by buying and selling old computer parts as people can now more easily afford high-end hardware. Try your local paper that people can pick it up from your house. If it's all old stuff itwould prob cost more for shipping then it's worth.

They're only about two years old.  The processor is a Pentium 4 3.2 Gigahertz.  Video card is 128 Megabyte Geforce FX 5200, it's got a gig of ram, 4 PCI slots, a functional sound card, etc.  It's a Dell Dimension 8300.  I live in the Chicago area, soon to be in the Ann Arbor, Michigan area.You'll definitely find a buyer for that.

Try resources that don't cost money - word of mouth is surprisingly effective. Mention it to people at work, put a flyer up in the local supermarket, tell your kids to tell their friends. I have been wanting to upgrade my computer,but I am a little confused on what REALLY makes the computer run quicker. Is it memory or the cpu, amount of hd space?

It may look like it does, because multi-tasking becomes easier as your computer is able to work with more PROGRAMS at the same time. Also, loading will go faster as your computer can store more data in the RAM, which is faster than having to store it on the HDD.

The CPU would most likely play the largest role in computer speed. 2.2GHz is fast enough for modern applications. In gameplay, speed is largely determined by your videocard.

The amount of Hard Disk Drive space you have is in no major way relevant, it is the way you handle the HDD space. Keep it defragmented and spyware free. There are different types of HDD's, but the most common in modern PC's are 7200RPM/8MB cache HDD's. Size ranging from somewhere between and over 20GB and 200GB.

Ofcourse, if you have the best raphic card but you only have a bad to mediocre processor, you will not notice any great improvements and your system will become a serious bottleneck for your GPU. Then you would have to look into upgrading all the other parts until finally, your mainboard becomes outdated and you would have to replace that. Then you notice that the mainboard is capable of more than your RAM/CPU can deliver and you look into upgrading that again.. Never ending cycle.Well Raptor, while I agree with your facts... The main things I use the computer for are Photoshop , music ,slideshows. I will be using it for editing home movies to put on disc. I assumed it would use a lot of my hard drive and memory.

Also I have another 40 GB hard drive should I install that as slave or just buy onthat is bigger? I'm not  sure how 2 hdd work, as one or seperate?

Someone my husband knows gave us a Sony CCD-TRV21 video camera. It USES the small 8 mm tapes...I have no clue what I need  to transfer the video to my computer.  The only thing it has with it is the battery charger and this square thing attatched to the charger...I don't know what this square thing is for.  The videocamera WORKS great but I don't know what to do with the footage. All you can do is view it on the lcd monitor. I have been using my digital camera for videos for the past 6 months but I would rather use the film. I would love to transfer this onto the computer to edit and put on cd but I can't seem to find an answer to exactly what hardware and names of cords that I will need. I am guessing I will need some type of card to install on the computer and a cord to plug in...but I have done searches on the internet and have came up with no answers. I also have vhs tapes I would like to do the same thing with. We have already lost footage of my oldest son's first birthday party.  I would really appreciate any help.

The square box you mention is a knockdown transformer.and part of the ...What is a Belkin data bus, Merlin?He didn't have the manual anymore and he didn't have any cables. All we have is the camera and charger and the knockdown transformer. I have a cd burner and I was going to make vcds with the movies. I would like to get a dvd burner in the near future. Here I am with another totally newbie question.  For many  years I  have an email address through my ISP provider.  I read this mail through OUtlook express.  As a backup for the TIMES that the :server is out" (I dont know what that means, i just know that it means that my mail for two or three days is eaten  up by the big email EATER in the sky), I have a hotmail address, which I can access through an "internet card."  This connects me to the internet through a different ISP server.
 Now, my problem is, because I do online teaching, I spend a lot of time reading the mail.  And hotmail means that I have to stay online to go through my mail, read and reread it. The fonts aren't so nice and I use graphics in my emails which sometimes come through as attachments in hotmail which of course doesn't convey the original meaning of the graphic placement. Obviously hotmail doesn't have the ease and capability of Outlook Express, and you can't send from hotmail to OE; even if I wanted to , there is the probem that my server has now more and more  having "server PROBLEMS,' like once or twice a week. So that OE address has become unreliable.
 BOTTOM line and question: I want to get a new email address, one that is free, that I can access from an email card, and that i could use through something like say Eudora (does this allow me to read and write and play with my mail offline?).  Can someone tell me what email services are good and AVAILABLE for free; and, should I be thinking about downloading Eudora or some other service, or should I try and use Outlook (not OE) or what for this new address?  Remember,  I can't buy anything, and I have only 200 or so MB free space on my entire computer. ugh!

Have you made changes to your hardware?I'd be interested in a solution too. I have a 5 year old Dell XPS 1000. This 'press DEL to resume' at the end of the POST first appeared 3 years ago. I thought when I flashed the BIOS for XP it would disappear...it didn't. Then 2 months ago it suddenly disappeared...for exactly 1 week and has now returned.

ive recently had trouble doing anything internet RELATED on my computer. it shows up as if im on the internet, but when i go to USE my browser i get nothing. i tried internet explorer and i got 'shdoclc.dll/dnserror '. the other day me and my mom were tampering with files we shouldnt have been tampering with, which is what more than likely caused the problem. i have no idea what to do next??

HELP anyone?shdoclc.dll is a Windows System FILE and should be in the system directory.

First search for it and see that it still exists. If not you can run sfc /scannow and get it restored. You need the OS install disk for this.

Exactly how did you tamper with the files?

this is so frustrating You didn't exactly mention how you tampered with the files.

Run the System File Checker (sfc), if shdoclc.dll has been changed Windows will replace it.

This would be a good time to check for viruses, spyware, and the like.

I'm LOOKING at buying a laptop for college, i want to KNOW which brand will give me the most for my money.  I want a computer that is easily manuevered, USED, and that will give me plenty of GOOD usage.  I just don't know what to look for or at what brand either.  I have an i pod so i thought apple would be the best, but i don't like the format of the apple computers. Not to upset pc  users whatever their system they may have.But in this year 2005 ad is not that good, By now the system should tell you what is wrong with you pc,and not throwing up silly codes, messages that only the software script writers etc can understand,and the fob of issue of troubleshooting  help is a fisaco so we are in NOWHERE land, and its strange that thirty-party software  SORTS it out.....so my POINT is....why do people buy ......microsoft...why  not .apple/mac software.....i bet you have quicktime/ipod.......is it software or hardware

We have an old computer that we were going to give to a family member as we upgraded to a new system running Windows XP.

My husband cleaned out all the games and information on the old computer.  It was running on Windows ME.  Now when we originally purchased this older computer, it came with no disc's for backup or restore.  I didn't think much about that then other than this must be a way for MICROSOFT to control piracy.

Since the major delete, the computer will not start up and we just get a blue screen.  Is there anywhere where we can download a system restore for this computer or is it junk now?  Any information is greatly appreciated.

Not quite related. - it is not a form of piracy control, you perhaps simply did not pay enough for an OS/restore cd to be included. However, this is rather strange as every [new] PC that comes with an operating system should also come with a serial number.

You may wish to inspect the computer CASE for a serial number. With this serial number, you can simply obtain any Windows ME disk and enter the serial number to install the contents.

Have you reformatted the HDD or did you simply REMOVE too many files?

TRY the following:

1. Before Windows ME loads, press F8
2. Select safe mode

Can you still access safe mode?Just went digging in a PLACE that my husband suggested and bingo, found a restore disc.  Thanks anyway.Arh it would have still loaded winme.......without the disk and it would have been legal......

I have this BUG on my Windows 2000 proffesional partition...and it's like this...
First on the window tab apeard "System Shutdown"
Then further on the MESSAGE it's like: "The sistem is shutting down. Please save all work in progres and LOGOFF. Any unsaved changes will be LOST. This shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM"
Then is a countdown starting from 1:00 min
And finaly still on this window is:
"Message: - The system process 'C:\WINNT\sistem32\lsass.exe' terminated unexpectedly with status code 128. The system will now shut down and restart"

I MENTION that if I disable the network connection this message stops to apears but if I enable the network connection after aprox. 30 min this message apears and exactly how he promise is shutting down my computer and restarts it.
