Solve : FYI U.S. Won't Cede Control of Net Computers?

Answer»

U.S. Won't Cede Control of Net Computers
Jun 30, 6:51 PM (ET)

By ANICK JESDANUN

"NEW YORK (AP) - The U.S. government will indefinitely retain oversight of the main
computers that control traffic on the Internet, ignoring calls by some countries
to turn the function over to an international body, a senior official said Thursday.

The announcement marked a departure from previously stated U.S. policy.

Michael D. Gallagher, assistant secretary for communications and information at the
Commerce Department, shied away from terming the declaration a reversal, calling
it instead "the foundation of U.S. policy going forward."

"The signals and words and intentions and policies need to be clear so all of us
benefiting in the world from the Internet and in the U.S. economy can have confidence
there will be continued stewardship," Gallagher said in an interview with The Associated
Press.

He said the declaration, officially made in a four-paragraph statement posted online,
was in response to growing security threats and increased reliance on the Internet
globally for communications and commerce.

The computers in question serve as the Internet's master directories and tell Web
browsers and e-mail programs how to direct traffic. Internet users around the world
interact with them every day, likely without knowing it. Policy decisions could at
a stroke make all Web sites ending in a specific suffix essentially unreachable.

Though the computers themselves - 13 in all, KNOWN as "root" servers - are
in private hands, they contain government-approved lists of the 260 or so Internet
suffixes, such as ".com."

In 1998, the Commerce Department selected a private organization with international
board members, the Internet Corporation for ASSIGNED Names and Numbers, to decide
what goes on those lists. Commerce kept veto power, but indicated it would let go
once ICANN met a number of conditions.

Thursday's declaration means Commerce would keep that control, regardless of whether
and when those conditions are met.

"It's completely an about-face if you consider the original commitment made when
ICANN was created," said Milton Mueller, a Syracuse University professor who has
written about policies surrounding the Internet's root servers.

ICANN officials said they were still reviewing Commerce's statement, which also expressed
continued support of ICANN for day-to-day operations.

The declaration won't immediately affect Internet users, but it could have political
ramifications by putting in writing what some critics had already feared.

Michael Froomkin, a University of Miami professor who helps run an independent ICANN
watchdog site, said the date for relinquishing control has continually slipped.

Some countries, he said, might withdraw support they had for ICANN on the premise
it would one day take over the root servers.

In a worst-case scenario, countries refusing to accept U.S. control could establish
their own separate Domain Name System and thus fracture the Internet into more than
one network. That means two users typing the same domain name could reach entirely
different Web sites, depending on where they are.

The announcement comes just weeks before a U.N. panel is to release a report on Internet
governance, addressing such issues as oversight of the root servers, ahead of November's
U.N. World Summit on the Information Society in Tunisia.

Some countries have pressed to move oversight to an international body, such as the
U.N. International Telecommunication Union, although the U.S. government has historically
had that role because it funded much of the Internet's early development.

Ambassador David Gross, the U.S. coordinator for international communications and
information policy at the State Department, insisted that Thursday's announcement
was unrelated to those discussions.

But he said other countries should see the move as POSITIVE because "uncertainty
is not something that we think is in the UNITED States' interest or the world's interest."

Gallagher noted that Commerce endorses having foreign governments manage their own
country-code suffixes, such as ".fr" for FRANCE."

A little bit more Remote Control, or RC, and what is with the 'foreign governments'
shouldn't that read other State Governments? Each to his or her own I say.

America would do well to dismantle the Federal government and cede Federal Government
to State Governors in my opinion.

Each State would then be independant and have it's own flag.

America is too much like Rome with its House of Representatives and its Senate.

Local State and County Government where Friends can meet is a much better proposition.

Each State would then have its own Bank and its own Church, instead of relying on
the Federal Bank and just the one man.

With a system of Church by State the over-generalised catholic system would cease
to exist.

Solve : Transferring Audio files from tape to hard drive?

Answer»

I'm trying to transfer sudio from tape to hard drive. can someone help.Maybe wmp......will do it.....portable DEVICE?I used the freebie Audacity to record tapes to drive but I don't know of a freebie which will record mp3 format if you want that. Lame will convert wav to mp3. Note that you will LOSE some recording QUALITY & will probably not get full stereo from standard cassette tapes. Use the line-out (or earphone out) from your tape player to the line-in on your pc, EXPERIMENT with recording levels before committing.

There are lots of audio recorders on the net.

Good LUCK

Solve : Unable to reach some addresses?

Answer»

I have no idea where this goes, so ...

Over the past few weeks, I've been GRADUALLY discovering more and more ADDRESSES that I can't get to from my home PC. I'm using IE and it attempts to go out to the address, but just tries and tries and tries and never actually gets there. The main one I've noticed is Google, but I've also had issues with EBAY, the Onion and many other smaller ones. The same problem is occurring on another computer on the same system at my house, so I'm assuming it's a network problem, connection problem or some virus of some nature. Does anyone have any ideas of what this could be and how to fix it? Quote

... The same problem is occurring on another computer on the same system at my house, so I'm assuming it's a network problem, connection problem or some virus of some nature...

Your assumption is probably correct.
DSL or cable?
Wired or wireless router?
FIREWALL?
Antivirus?
Spyware CLEANER?

Earthlink cable
wired router
we have a firewall and a spyware cleaner, but no anti-virus program.
We've scanned with a few different programs and come up with nothing each time. Quite the myster. Thanks!I suspect you may be infected with a trojan of some kind. Immediately download and install an Anti-Virus Program. A good, free one is AVG.
http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5Your MTU (Max. Transmission Unit) may be set too high. Some routers have a default MTU that is too high, or it may have been changed by some rubbish Internet connection "optmising" software. Are you connecting to the Internet via a router?

If your MTU is over 1452, try setting it to that. If the same problem occurs, reduce the MTU setting by a small amount each time until the problem goes away. Any qns, post again.

Solve : Recovering an AOL Instant Messenger Buddy List?

Answer»

I recently accidently deleted all of my buddies off of my Instant Messenger Buddy List. I cannot find them in the recycle bin and I was wondering if there is anyway I can recover them by other means. If you have an idea on what needs to be done to recover my buddy list let me know. Any help WOULD be greatly appreciated! You can try this site:

http://www.dark-e.com/des/software/chat/index.shtml

Read the requirements carefully and UNDERSTAND that chat recovery is a beta program. Proceed at your own risk.

Good luck.Read the requirements carefully and understand that chat recovery is a beta program. Proceed at your own risk.

Can you TELL me how to use it?I've seen a lot of beta programs in my life, but this one hit an all time low. Program was totally unusable with more greyed out AREAS than a battleship

On the other hand, it was the only SOLUTION I could find. Try contacting the program publisher. In the future you may want to export the list to a file for safekeeping.

Good luck.

Solve : Lost network Connection?

Answer»

As regular BROWSERS know I`ve had a liitle bit of trouble, probably caused by viruses.
I need to network my laptop to my PC.
Some is WORKING,i.e. I can connect to the internet, but I can`t use the printer or transfer shared files.
Please HELP again.
Regards,
MartynYou may need to re-tag the option to share printers and share files.

However, it is not recommended when connecting to the Internet.I don`t know how to do that, perhaps you could help.

The message I am getting is "a runtime ERROR has occured" abnormal programme termination.
Does this help?

Thanks,
MartynI am not quite certain where you share Printers and Files as I have DISABLED it quite a while ago.

When does the Runtime error occur? It can mean many things. The runtime error messages shows as soon as the "print" button is pressed.
Hope this helps,
MartynYou may need to reinstall printer drivers.

check for spy/mal/ware..etc..and what mouse is this..Does the mouse JUMP around the screen like mad at random intervals
Hi

As your machine is a laptop, I would guess that you have a problem with the built-in mouse, which has most likely got a mechanical problem. Is this one of the tiny joystick-like pointers?

As for fixing the problem, the first thing you need to know is (as suggested by ZCA):

1) Does this problem occur all the time, or just sometimes?
2) When the pointer moves on its own, does it move around all over the place, or does it steadily move in one direction?Old post!

Solve : Hard drive problems of no access?

Answer»

I have several hard drives that won't boot or be accessed.

The drives were initially formatted as bootable; the drives were never disk compressed; the drives worked perfectly when I used them before.

1 is Fugitsu 10GB
1 is Maxtor 20GB
1 is Western Digital 420 Megabyte

I don't think I can hear the Fugitsu or the Maxtor spin.
I can hear the Western Digital drive spin constantly, but it is inaccessible.

They do have IMPORTANT documents on the drives.

Does anyone KNOW if drives LIKE these with similar problems are reparable / fixable?

Thank you for your helpTim Turner..... What operating system are you using ?
Do these drives have o/s on them or were they just storage ?
Why did you cease using then originally ?

let us know

dl65
I am using Windows XP.

The hard drives have an OS loaded on them, along with file storage.

The Fugitsu 10GB has Win ME
The Maxtor 20GB has Win ME
The Western Digital 420 Megabyte has Win 95

I stopped using the drives last year after buying a larger hard drive )160 GB Maxtor. I disconnected the drives and put them in an anti-static bag for storage.
I didn't think I would need them, but last week I found out my files are on those disks.

Thank you for any help.

TimTim Turner.....Do you mount the drives in your pc as the slave with your 160 maxtor set as the master ?

let us know

dl65 I have used all THREE ways:

-One drive with jumper set to Solo

-Maxtor 160 Drive as master and one of the non-working drives as slave with the jumpers configured correctly for the master / slave settings (one drive master / other drive is slave)

-I tried the Cable select setting for both drives, and I have disconnected one of the drives while leaving the attached drive as Cable select

-I still don't hear or feel the Maxtor 20 or the Fugitsu 10 spin up once the power is turned on (the drives are connected to the power cable and the data cable), but the Western Digital 420 MB definately is spinning, but the computer cannot access or see the attached WD 420 drive.

Is there a simple way to determine if the heads of the Fugitsu 10 and Maxtor 20 has crashed into the disk platters and/or the disk rotation mechanism has quit spinning the platters?

Thank you for your suggestions and help,Tim Turner...... ok ...the 420 mb drive with win 95 on it is formatted FAT and I dont think win xp will READ that ......Does the drive show up in bios or in my computer when its installed ......

If you go to the maxtor site http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/Maxtor/menuitem.3c67e325e0a6b1f6294198b091346068/?channelpath=%2Fen_us%2FSupport%2FSoftware%20Downloads%2FATA%20Hard%20Drives&downloadID=22
D/L powermax .......

dl65
Are they set in the bios........options......detect hard-drives..They are set in the BIOS as auto-detect.

What spec have you got??how many drives have you got in your pc......are any of them external......more info..Only 2 internal hard drives installed,
Athlon 2800,
Win XP,
512 MB Ram
can you see the drives in the disk management///////control panel admin tools....the drives you have indicated have been f.a.t formated.......you will find a ntfs fat reader.....like this>>.http://www.ntfs.com/products.htm.. you also could do this>>>>>.http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/deploy/mgrtfset.mspxBy the way, Windows XP will read FAT

Solve : tCanon S200?

Answer»

My Canon S200 printer all of a sudden is not printing correctly. The printer seems to be only printing Some partial words. In an attempt to find out what could be wrong with it I have printed a Print Head Alignment page and get the same results each TIME. On this particular page I should be SEEING 5 columns (and then you direct the computer as to which one is the BEST for head alignment). I see the first two columns ok (however, the numbers that go with the columns can only be partially seen)..........the next two columns to the right I cannot see (only the part of each number shows) and the FIFTH column is printed (but the numbers to go along with that column are only partially shown). I've also tried doing a Deep CLEANING and this does nothing to correct this problem either. I do not know of any other options to correct this printing problem. Can you make any suggestions?? Thank you very much. BCPerhaps the Inkt cartridge simply requires replacing?

Solve : Blogging?

Answer»

Do anybody do it..........you should .......you could.....I don't .. I shouldn't .. .I wouldn't ..why not......how does anyone learn.......anything on the NET.....Too many people with nothing to say. Too much prose rarely rising above a third grade primer. Too many people who can't write or spell. Too many opinions built on illogical ideas. Too many "facts" not based on evidence. But hey, it's freedom in action. Blogging is much like all those worthless personal websites that tell you that karin from Wisconsin has recently graduated and has met her 10th boyfriend and accidently got pregnant [again] and now spends the rest of her life in damnation for her wicked and immoral crime.

Helping people solve their computer problems is not the same as reading reports of a completely unknown individual whom I have never spoken to.

This is a forum. Not a web log. Therefore, your comment is rendered obsolete. If this were a weblog, we would have no interaction with the people we assist. They would merely read what we have to say. And perhaps be able to post their comment. Not that we'd ever read the comment because we would have definite fixes where the only comment applicable would be thank you since no other input would be accepted.

Great. I'll go back to my 80's videogames thank you very much.

Solve : Highest measured CPU temperature??

Answer»

What would be the type of CPU you have and its highest measured temperature plus the ambient temperature at that moment?

Recently, I MANAGED to create a new personal record.

Cooler Master Aero 7 Lite with ARCTIC Silver thermal compound
AMD XP Athlon 2800 at 2.08Ghz
71 degrees Celcius 85.2 degrees Fahrenheit (Ambient temperature)

That can be considered a good thing? Yes and no... That could be a future problem right? What made the temperature jump up so much?

[glb]Flame[/glb]The LOWER the temperature of your CPU, the better. A high CPU temperature is never good, since it will cause performance to degrade and also SHORTEN the life span of the CPU.

However, AMD is known for higher temperatures and according to AMD TECHNICAL support I should not have to start worrying unless it reaches 80 degrees Celcius

Solve : Pictures Keep Copying themselves?

Answer»

Hello,
I know this sounds strange, but here it goes. I took a few pics today with my disk camera, loaded them into my pictures file after cropping, ETC. I deleted the originals (I thought), but everytime I look in the picture file there are more of them. I have tried deleting them one at a time, as a group, I've run my Norton Anti Virus, Spy Sweeper. I cannot get rid of them. Anyone know what's up with this? by the way, there are now about 40 copies.
Marilynwhat software is used?for this camera.....The camera is an Olympus Camedia and my photo software is Serif Photo Plus.ok boot in safe MODE hold down the F8 key and delete the pic fils from there.....its late so i will ponder on this ok.....night.. For what it's worth.....I booted in Safe Mode and tried deleting the pics, but as I am deleting them a box pops up and says it is copying pictures as I am deleting. I tested other pics and it is copying all of them as I try to move them to another file or delete them.

Thanks for your help.

I have used this camera for over a year with no problems until yesterday. I have Camedia 4.2. I have tried everything that I know of, but each time I try to delete anything from My Pictures file, it makes more copies. I don't suppose it would work to copy the original pictures to another file and then delete the current My Pictures file with all the copies. (?)reboot pc and now try to delete pics.......you could open a new folder drag the pics in and then dump it.....possiblitys are reg corupted with a trojan worm/// scan for any >>internet explorer shell damaged......is this the only problem you have .......are this saved as bmp/gifs/ etc.......does your camera have any duplicate SETTINGS in the menu??or does the software program have one?? have you tried the safemode option >>the last good config.....option....maybe a windows update has caused it..Will the following steps work for you?

1. Disconnect camera
2. Format memory media
3. Shut down computer
4. Start computer
5. Connect camera.

Does it attempt to keep copying files from your camera or another location?I've seen this problem before & I'm 'almost SURE' it was a virus.
Sorry my memory ain't so good, too many computer problems to remember them all.

Solve : CD-ROM digital extraction?

Answer»

I have two DVD/CD player/recorders in my computer. Both are set for 'enable digital audio' in properties. Yet, I can't get any software (with one exception) to either play a CD or rip files if digital audio is checked (it will play through standard or analogue, but still won't allow ripping). The exception is Windows Media Player, which works perfectly. Even so, I can't burn CDS with any program. Any ideas? Thanks.Lewsha...... So we have 2 cd/dvd r/w drives ......

Are you able to play cds on both ok ?
Are you able to play dvds on both ok ?

What burning software are you using ?
When you look at them in the hardware device manager .....do they both say they are working ok ?

Which software are you trying to use to listen to ( or watch ) the cds or dvds ...other than WMP?

let us know
dl65

I can play cds on either, but only when digital audio is not enabled through the software.

All is fine according to the device manager.

Software - it doesn't seem to matter; WinAmp, Foobar, QCD (my current CHOICE) -- none will play unless I disable digital audio in the software. Yet, why would WMP WORK, and allow me to burn and rip?

Weird: The dvd sides to my dual disks play fine (video and/or music) through any dvd software player, including the music.

Thanks. LewLewsha.....Thats really odd , I just checked two of my pcs that I use regularly to burn both audio and video cds and dvds and they are all set to Enable digital Audio.
There is a note to say ........
You can have Windows use digital instead of Analog Playback of cd audio . This feature MAY NOT WORK with all cd-Roms , disable if you are having problems with CD Audio.
Have you tried using NERO to burn ?
Are you trying to burn copy protected audio cd's ?

let us know

dl65
Yes, very odd, but there just has to be some simple solution. I have indeed used Nero, and I know that the drives can, in principle, allow digital extraction because it works fine through WMP. I guess one question is: What is it about Windows Media that lets me play CDs, and rip them, while other software doesn't?

More tomorrow, perhaps...

Thanks. What if you untag enable digital audioI've tried everything (well, everything that I've thought of...) and only WMP works. I can now make an image of a CD through media player, and burn that image to ANOTHER CD, but it won't play through all venues, and its a bit cumbersome.

When I use Nero to burn, it hangs up both of my drives so I have to use the old paper clip to remove the disks. I also get some weird "unknown SCSI error". Perhaps this is part of the problem. In the hardware properties, both of the drives say "SCSI" but I'm pretty sure that they are IDE drives. I'll go back into my box and check them out again, but if I remember correctly they appear to cable directly to the ASUS A8V motherboard's IDE interface (I also have a RAID 0 configuration for my hard drives).

Sorry for being redundant, but all this may not matter, since WMP works for playing & ripping, nothing else does, and it will at least make an image of an audio or any disk I put in, which can then secondarily be burned to another disk.

Thanks.update codecs......have you tried power dvd to play them? are you trying to copy dvds??if so your need an encoder.. i would disconnect one of the drives and test it out.the newer one?....it maybe a firmware issue...

our computer couldn't start properly, one of the options offered was to start from the last known restore point. we chose that option and the pc came back to life, but sort of in a previous life, meaning it is now functioning with a windows 98 look. how do we go back to XP? Your better off just Fdisking the drive... Trying to get the the bottom of this wil be complicated...

[glb]Flame[/glb]I am not sure what you mean by fdisking the drive...Flame is suggesting a FRESH install.
Open Windows Explorer>Tools>Options and look in there.explorer/tools.internet options, that's what's there and explorer sure is not where my problem will be fixed. any other ideas?Windows Explorer>Tools>FOLDER Options
Sorry.THANK you for the correction.
now I have been in there but i am not quite sure what i need to change. can you elaborate on your suggestion? like explain what you think it happened and what the remedy would be? thank you Restore does exactly what it says, it restores your computer to a previous point in time.
The problem is that it can also screw things up for you so I never use it.
Your computer has gone back in time like a tardis.
I was hopefull you would change the settings in there back to how it was before. You can revert back to the Windows XP look if you wish.somehow what fed suggested WORKED, a day later.
eventhough I restarted the pc after making the changes it wasn't until this am that they took effect. so far so good.

How many Megabytes all up?i dont know they are all in windows media player
I guess your choices are.
1. Burn them to disk.
2. Upload to the net then download to new computer.
3. Copy via usb memory stick to new computer.
4. Network or link the 2 computers & copy across.

My choice would be investing in a 1GB usb memory stick even if it meant installing a usb card into the old computer, they are very handy things.k thanks how much would a memory stick coust me?
and will it work from my sony lab top to my dell desk top?Unless you live in AUSTRALIA like me, the $ figure wouldn't mean much.

Solve : Regarding MP3's?

Answer»

I have a Sony Walkman that is supposed to play MP3's...but...DUH!

How do I get the tunes for the MP3? Do I have to have a CD burner? Or? Please advise, as I am a "babe in the WOODS" here and DON'T have a CD BURNER...

Appreciate any assistance...
Thanks
You will have to copy MP3 music songs onto a CD. MP3 files can be obtained by using a PROGRAM such as Napster. Which is now DEEMED legal, I believe.

If you do not have a CD-Reader/Writer you may be able to find MP3 CDs or DVDs for sale in stores. HOWEVER, I only know of one being sold so far, and that is in Europe.

The Sony Walkman is a CD reader, correct? If it is a simple USB stick, you can connect it to any USB PORT and copy data onto it.

Solve : Just for Fun Question?

Answer»

RAM is an important item in computer preformance. What do you think is better?

32+32 =64
64+64=128

or
64
128

n you opinion does adding 1 slot of RAM is better then adding 2 slots of RAM to equal one?

Do you think there is a preformace diffrence and what would you recomend:

*Personal Note* I own old computers so When I do the PLAYING around with Rams I don't see a diffrence so I want to hear from all of you =)

oops! =) fixed itWith elderly pc's maybe it's not the amount of RAM AVAILABLE in any form but the speed of the processor. Check how the processors are doing with each RAM configuration, then if possible change the processors and have another look.

I also run elderly pc's.the key to ram is to have them in pairs of the same size and make.. ..info>>http://www.kingston.com/tools/assessor/win98.aspThe more the merrier.
Quote

...I own old computers so When I do the playing around with Rams I don't see a diffrence so I want to hear from all of you...

All my PC's are "old". RAM configuration is not important. Total amount of RAM is important. "Faster" RAM is not faster, RAM only operates at the fastest speed allowed by the Front SIDE Bus. PC133 memory will operate at PC100 speed in a 100MHz FSB, and will operate at PC66 speed in a 66MHz FSB. Not all PC133 memory MODULES are able to operate at 133, 100, and 66MHz.

Win98 - 64MB is more than adequate. With any more, you will notice very little difference.
Win2k - requires at least 128MB, more is noticeably faster. Any less, computer is very slow.
WinXP - 160MB works quite well, but, more is better.

If any of the main memory is shared by the video, that must be accounted for in the totals.

Several mths ago,I was hacked, and this person deleted my winfiles. I am RATHER pc illiterate,so did not feel the effects of that for sometime, I just thought it was my pc playing up. On my pc at the time, I had a particular file, with rather personal information in it, and the person who gained access to my pc, now has that file. He had said to me sometime after, in a conversation we had, something about 'net bios' and that he could see and retrieve anything from my pc at the time. Is this possible?? Is it possible for someone to gain access to your pc, retieve personal files etc..and then save it to thier own pc?? This is my first time using this forum, and if I have put this question in the wrong place, or something, my appologies. Solve : Mozilla Firefox keeps installing itself?

Answer»

Why is it doing this? I don't want it and it messes up my internet connection. I KEEP having to use System Restore to go back to a point before it appeared. Can anyone tell me how to stop it please?!Nicky, have you uninstalled Mozilla Firefox through the Software MENU?

If you go back to a restore point where Mozilla Firefox has been INSTALLED, it seems logical to me that it would attempt to reinstall it self as the restore point included Mozilla Firefox.

Answer these questions so that we can better help you:

1. When has your problem first started?
2. Have you SCANNED for Viruses, Trojan Horses and Spyware?
3. If yes, what scanners have you used?
-- If no, I advise you to do so immediatly
The first time it appeared I tried uninstalling it but then my internet connection wouldn't work. I've scanned for viruses using EZAntivirus. I don't know what Trojan Horses are - what scan would you recommend?Mozilla Firefox should not change your Internet connection settings when being uninstalled. What type of connection do you have?

And have you installed Mozilla Firefox yourself, has another user done this or has it simply appeared?

As for scanners, I recommend the following:

AVG Free
-- Anti Virus
Spybot S&D
-- Anti spyware
Microsoft Antispyware
-- Anti spyware. Windows XP Home & Professional only.

I did not install it - I don't know where its come from1. What type of connection do you have?

2. Mozilla Firefox does not APPEAR out of thin air, are there other users that you share the computer with?

3. Have you scanned for spyware?

Solve : Computer won't start!!?

Answer»

Hi
When I turn my other computer on it doesn't load anything, I just get a message SAYING 'System Operator not found'

Does anyone know why this has started to happen as it was fine last night? The computer does not have access to the INTERNET so it could't b e a bug.

It used to have windows 98 but recently had xp put on.

Thanks
Do you mean operating system not found?

If YES; Has this happened after installing Windows XP?

Yes thats the one!
I had xp put on about 6 months ago by a friend but recently had a new computer and stopped using the old one. Have now decided to put old one in another room and when I checked to see it was still working last night it was fine, then when I tried tom use it this morning, it came up with that message! What actions have you taken before you shut down the computer and turned it on the next morning?I put it on standby last night then pressed the button on the FRONT of the machine to wake it up and nothing was happening just a blank screen so I ctrl + ALT + del and restarted and it starts to load then comes up with the message operating system not found.
I have got a reboot disk but it will clear all the data I have saved on there and will put and earlier version of windows on (98 I think). Is this the only solution? What kind of reboot disk?

I advise you to power down your computer rather than keeping it on stand-by.

Solve : re demonic computer audio?

Answer»

Well, thanks Mr Merlin, but no joy Im afraid! I followed instructions via the internet and got my girl to do what you SUGGESTED......no good im afraid!..BUT she did recieve an error message when trying to REINSTALL audio.

0x80004005.......I promptly went to Microsofts user pages and got a whole list of variations on a theme!!
Now Im totally lost!...her audio still SOUNDS like a cross between a demon with belly ache and a pig grunting!!

She does NOT sound like this normally, in case you were wondering! What the *censored* is the problem?? Hardware failure? Software/driver failure? Exasperated boyfriend !Railman can you refresh this post......has to what you have tried........thanks m_2Merlin, thanks for your reply.
To REITERATE, I got my g/f to check her audio as per your instructions. She tells me her machine has only 1 audio device installed, so she could not change it. I got her to go into 'advanced' and run a 'diagnostic' but all it reurned was a fault report which was : 0x80004005. I checked MICROSOFT's own site for a solution to this fault, but there are many variations. The only thing I can think, is that her driver/s are somehow kapput. She tried deleting and re installing, but no sucess. try updating the sound......driver......type dxdiag in the run box.......this will tell you what sound device is used.....have you re-installed the system lately??Merlin, Thanks once again. In answer to your question about re installing, I cannot give you a definitive answer on that. She lives in Detroit, I live in Dorset UK, so I don't honestly know. She is a bigger dunce than even me when it comes to the 'technical' side of these things, and I know she would forgive me for saying that!
Her audio on incoming is fine, its her microphone side of things that require a lump hammer!

Her mic has been changed repeatedly, and the last time she replaced it, her audio voice signal worked just fine .....for a few hours! Then back to the 'growling' !!!
Do you suppose she may be were wolf? It maybe the cars.....that are may there causing it

did she try another mic? did she try control panel click the sound icon.....voice test......??is the win9x or winxp....

another thing .....are you doing voip>>.http://www.fcc.gov/voip/.....via a webcam/mic....what program are you using...msn ..you could tell you g/f to download this >http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0a9b6820-bfbb-4799-9908-d418cdeac197&displaylang=en it may work..Merlin, My apologies for not responding sooner.
Your latest information and link will, I feel, probably 'do the trick' You asked about her (g/f) system. She is using XP, with a yahoo chat client server. More than that I cannot say, I have yet to 'meet' her 'puter!

I have to be very patient with her as she is NOT au feit with the inner workings.
But I think she will be able to install and download th nessesary file from Microsoft that you kindly recommended.
I will of course, avail you of the outcome, and thank you personally and on behalf of Jodi, for your help. ok give my reguards to .......poole.....

Hello-

Anyone know where I can get a boilerplate of a SIMPLE computer maintenance agreement? Should include info about monthly, bi-monthly and bi-yearly computer service such as physical PC cleaning, quick tune-ups, data backups, system recovery/restore...

Any help much appreciated!http://www.contractedge.com/softwaremaintenanceagreement.html

or make your own in msword///or office/ etc....THANKS for the info... a place to start! There is also this>>http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/default.aspxOnce again... thank you!For what kind of tasks WOULD you use such an agreement? For providing simple computer services and repair on a monthly basis. Thanks for any help.I could do with one of those. Why do these contracts cost money? Can you not simply fabricate one yourself or is that CONSIDERED counterfeit?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Hi Flame,
yes I have virus protection. If I try to run it, the computer turns off. It does the same with the adware program and the disc clean up.

Solve : downloading .exe.files?

Answer»

When I download a file (like the new version of a browser for example) to my desktop, it saves as a .exe file
however when I run it to install it It shows as a LWP file and I get a message telling me that it can't read it.
What to do? What if you simply rename the extension?Ok, can you give me an example?
Thankshttp://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=LWPYes, omne initium est difficile, but this is not an initium. I have been doing this stuff for some years now.
Thank you for the link to the definition of the file. I have been there too.
I think I haven't been exact enough in describing my challenge, so here I go.
The problem starts when I decide to download the file and I get the popup window asking me where and how to save it.
Good enough I get the desktop as the location, but the option of "save as TYPE" is limited to " *.lwp " or " all files "
now, choosing " all files " does not solve the problem.
I guess my questions are:
1. how do I change the " save as type " setting
2. If I right click on the downloaded icon and go to " open with " choice and then " browse " which program should I chose to run it with?
I hope this clarifies my dilemma.
Thank you http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q307859/ Quote

Ok, can you give me an example?
Thanks

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Folder Options
5. Display
6. Untag hide EXTENSIONS for KNOWN filesthank you for the advice. I did add "exe" as an extension. For some reason it still does the same THINGS as before (it adds lwp after exe) but I can now saved it to disk(I couldn't before) and remove the additional "lwp" from it and it saves as an exe file now.
When has your problem first OCCURED?
