Solve : windows 98 first edition? |
Answer» I am running Windows 98 first edition. I installed a Belkin F5D5000 network card and attempted to load the drivers. I received the message this device would only be compatible with Windows 98 second edition. I removed the network card and anything associated with it. I did use the device manager to remove the card before I PHYSICALLY removed the card from the motherboard. I purchased a SMC1244TX-1 which is compatible with windows 98 first edition. I installed the card and booted up the computer and the hardware wizard detected the belkin card. I called Belkin and they had me remove anything associated with belkin from the registry. They assured me this would TAKE care of the problem, it did not. |

Solve : Windows 98 issues when adding RAM? |
Answer» This Dell Dimension 8100 had Windows XP Home version. I made it dual boot with Windows 98 because one application that runs only in Windows 98 is needed. Machind worked OK as dual boot but Windows XP had issues , like runs slow, etc. I added 1 GB of Ram and Windows XP greatly improved. BUT, Windows 98 now won't start. Just continues saying "insufficient memory", and "remove utilities", etc., as another posting on this forum. I tried starting over, removed the 1 GB RAM, went back to the original 512M RAM. But now it occasionally won't display on the screen, or when it does, it still won't boot in Windows 98. So now it's just a Windows XP MACHINE. I hope there are some SUGGESTIONS to get this fixed as a dual boot machine again with the additional RAM. ThanksWindows 98 often has a brain fart when it has more than 512 MB of RAM to work with. You can find a potential fix and other relevant INFO here: http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=333688 |

Solve : Floppy drive problem after Win98 reinstall? |
Answer» I just reinstalled Win98 on a formatted disk. All WENT well except my "A" floppy drive does not work. "My Computer" SHOWS an A and B drive. I found that the B floppy works. My BIOS shows only an A drive installed. Did you do something inside the case? It looks like power cord is not connected to your floppy. If the power cord to it wasn't connected the machine wouldn't freeze when trying to use it... Let's wait for more info. |

Solve : upgrade from 98 to xp? |
Answer» Quick question, how long should it take for SP2 to download and install? I an upgrading a teacher's laptop and SP2 seems to be stuck at "performing cleanup". I started it at approx 1pm and now it is almost 3:30. The TASK manager shows that the setup wizard and the updates are still running, but this seems a bit long. How much room was on the drive and how fast of a machine is it? It's POSSIBLE you are DOWNLOADING not just SP.2 but all updates since SP.2 was released. If you are on a dial-up connection 2.5 hours could be just about half of what is REQUIRED, or even less. |

Solve : Win98 explorer bar? |
Answer» Hi. I'd like to KNOW how to have all folders open with the folders explorer bar in Win98 f.e. without having to set them manually each TIME. locking the toolbars doesn't work for that. I know Win98 is a sinking ship, but like a rat on a sinking ship, I'm trying to keep my head above water since I lack the ability to swim to another BOAT I don't quiet understand. Can you rephrase?maybe tell us without all the other stuff at the end if that is ok???I just saw this and i think you want to enable folders in a window to open without reusing the window. Go to Tools at the top of any folder, and HIT Folder Options and under the General tab select Open each folder in it's own [NOT the same] window. Then CLICK Apply on the bottom right. That should do it. |

Solve : cannot open upgraded Hotmail site with Win 98...can you help me?? |
Answer» Just got a used Compaq computer with Windows 98. Recently Hotmail.com has upgraded the homepage so that it has a rotating "loading" thingy -- and when I try to go to that page with this new computer, it brings the page up for about 2 seconds, and then the page blanks out COMPLETELY. I can STILL see the taskbar at the top, but cannot open my mail. I am looking...don't see where to find that information... Internet EXPLORER Click on Help->About Internet Explorer And don't lose hope. Using Win98SE here. Just tried www.hotmail.com and I could view mail just fine. Using IE ver 6. I normally don't use it - USUALLY use Firefox for web stuff, and it works fine too with hotmail.com. I doubt the problem is your Win98. By the way, is it Win98 or Win98SE? In IE, go Help>About Internet ExplorerI've got Version 6. Can you think what else the problem might be?? I am frustrated that I can't get my email from there. I'll close out that acct. once I can get it...so it won't matter then!I think it's just Win98.Try Firefox. Thank you!! I used Firefox and it works. Had a message that it was an encrypted page...maybe that's why I couldn't open it? I had checked security settings, but didn't know which one to try changing. Thanks, anyway...everyone...for your suggestions! BrooksNow, you can forget about IE, like many people did. |

Solve : Win 98SE usb drivers 4 flash drives? |
Answer» does anyone know how to get flash drives and usb external drives to work in win98SE if you don't know the driver maker or version? 5.16 is the USB driver version not the 98se version It is what Dusty said.Okay then I am Lost because that still does not RECOGNIZE it... I thought there was a version difference. the HDD does work on another computer so I know it is functional. When I installed the driver it did not register when I put the usb in. is there a special way I don't know about to install the driver? I mean I understand how computers work and have had lot's of experience installing drivers. I really want to thank you for your help!1. File System. Is it possible the external hard drive was "formatted" with a file system that is not native (foreign) to Windows 98 SE? Quote from: kristennjason on February 06, 2008, 02:51:15 AM I have an Acom Data usb 2.0 100gig Hard Drives (external) that shows up on my mac... but I need it on my win98SE computer. this is extremely important. Quote from: kristennjason on February 09, 2008, 01:45:49 PM the HDD does work on another computer so I know it is functional. Was it formatted on a Mac system? Do you know which file system it was formatted with? Have you successfully accessed the drive from any other Windows system after it was last formatted with a file system? Windows 98 SE has native support for the FAT (FAT16) and FAT32 file systems. If your external hard drive was formatted with a different file system you'll need third party software to access it directly. 2. What is your "immediate" goal here? Do you just want to transfer (read-only) some files to the Windows 98 SE computer from the Mac or external hard drive (one time deal)? Or do you want the ability to use your external hard drive (with its files) on any personal computer at any time (Mac, Windows, Linux)? 3. Does not recognize it. Can you provide exact text of any message indicating the external hard drive is not recognized? What are the symptoms? Does device manager list it anywhere (possibly as an unknown device)? |

Solve : Win98/Vista networking? |
Answer» I'm trying to GET a windows 98 machine to ACCESS shared DRIVES on my new Vista machine on my home network but am having no luck. I got the XP machine to access Vista by creating and ID/pwd the same on Vista and XP. I did the same on Win98 but even with the ID having the same password as it does on Vista, when I click on the Vista machine in Network Neighbourhood, it only asks for a password (doesn't let me enter an ID), and no matter what password I TYPE in for the IDs I have on the Vista machine it says invalid. |

Solve : I need help loading a cdrom on windows 98,disk not displaying images!? |
Answer» A friend, who SOLD you that CD, might have used incorrect option while burning the CD, and made it unreadable on other computer.Well technically, the disc was produced by a company, that produce these images, they have sold several discs before and have never had a problem, until mine. ... I wonder if your PARTICULAR drive just doesn't like that particular CD. If you have family and/or friends that have computers that will read the CD, could you have one of them simply copy all the .jpgs from the CD to their hard drive, then burn them back to another CD for you? Just to see if that works in your computer. It might be a work-around solution. Bright idea!!!Thats already been done, but its not workingQuote from: WillyW on February 13, 2008, 05:59:32 PM Quote from: XdramakingX on February 13, 2008, 03:10:18 PMI need to changle the volume labelQuote from: XdramakingX on February 14, 2008, 07:03:46 AM... I need to changle the volume label This is not neccessary to make a CD READABLE...and can only be done on a re-writable. Actually it can only be done when it is originally burned so i think you're barking up the wrong TREE and need to contact whoever made that CD for you. You have stated it works on another machine.......this means it's probably NOT the CD. However if it does not work on your machine it's not worth the hassle. The suggestions posted are all valid ways of solving this dilemna...what you choose to do with the suggestions is up to you.;-(.* |

Solve : how to transfer music/photo/video files from windows 98 to vista?? |
Answer» i bought a hard drive that was SUPPOSEDLY compatible with both windows 98 and vista from BJ's but couldn't use it as company bankrupt and could not download the extra program for windows 98 compatibility. i have a bunch of pics and video and music files (PROBABLY only about 500 TOTAL) on my old windows 98 dell that i would like to access separately so i can recycle the old computer and only use the new one i have. i would be fine having the old files on a portable player, but most of the new ones are not compatible with windows 98. i am not sure if the new zune would be compatible with 98 and vista which would be ideal for me. does anyone have any advice/recommendations? thank youMost MEMORY sticks will work with WIN 98. They just need a driver. |

Solve : ms-dos program display works under 98 but not xp? |
Answer» I have an old ms-dos program that runs fine under windows 98. But under xp, the color screen is covered by equally spaced with dots and the color type face is spotty. With the black and white setting, everything is fine. Thanks for your reply, but I don't think it applies. The program is running in MS-DOS under XP from a .bat file. So there are no icons or anything else to right click on. Just a shortcut to the bat file, which starts the program. Then right click the batch file and choose properties. Also right click the program and do the same. Or the .exe for the program. Create a shortcut to the .exe on the DESKTOP temporarily to enforce the changes...Thanks, that worked. But to get full screen, I had to right click on the dos window and then select full screen. I did not have to use the 256 colors or the smaller screen size or the other options, just run under 98. Thanks againI have got a new problem. The program is a bookkeeping program that has an interior section that is supposed to scroll and show each line item as you enter it. In the normal window (not full screen) it works. But in the full screen, it only shows the last line entered. In full screen mode, if you leave the posting screen, go to another info window, and then come back, the line items are all there. I have changed all the setting I could find, but nothing seems to make it work. I have tried 95 compatiblity, 256 colors, supsending themes and advanced text services - same problem. Under the 98 system, no problem. The only other difference is that the colors are different. What program is this ? ?The program is BBX2, a bookkeeping program from 1998.windows 98 has the original dos files on it while windows xp does not really run the original dos OS you would have to make another partion with dos 6.X installed to it. I recently learned this but windows 98 has the actually windows dos os in the system files. windows xp has dos but it's a confined version to do special task that windows xp os cannot do otherwise such as pinging ping just being a network command that can only be done through the ms dos command prompt. so either back to windows 98 or create new partion on hdd and install ms dos Thanks. I have two hard disks; one with 98 and one with XP. I have to reboot each time to switch operating SYSTEMS. Is there a shortcut to switch between the two? Also, since this is an old machine, it uses a old Bios. I was told never to update a bios unless absolutely necessary. The problem is that it only allows 8 gig drives. And last, On the 8 gig XP drive, XP is taking up 4 gig of space. When I installed, I chose not to delete the installation files. Is that what is taking up all the space? The only other thing I have installed is windows office which says it is taking only .6 gig. thanks again |

Solve : Windows 98SE won't boot from floppy? |
Answer» Rebooted my aging computer - Win 98SE Pentium III 450 256Mb - and it froze at Verifying DMI Pool. Tried rebooting with floppy but though the drive light flashes on start up it doesn't attempt to boot from it. In the BIOS the sequence is set to A C SCSI (OLD drive no longer in existance), but I've also tried A C CDrom etc.. I've switched the floppy drive to another, but same result - just won't boot from the floppy. I've checked all the connections to the hard drive, floppy etc.. Has my MOTHERBOARD or hard drive packed up? Any suggestions gratefully received...You write "the" floppy. Just a thought... if the floppy is as antiquated as the computer and OS, maybe it is corrupted or (partially or completely) erased? |

I may have accidently blown out one of the updates, downloaded at a time we still had the internet. If I can get access to the internet with another WinXP unit, could I download Win98 updates? or doe I need a Win 98SE unit? Equally important, how do you INSTAL them. Windows has a subdirectory in \windows called \updates. Do you just overwrite those and reboot? |

Solve : Your favorite Windows OS: 98 - XP(Vista not included)? |
Answer» Makes sense to me. Didn't you vote for Win 2K several times, already? no i only voted once.My comment was for patio...LOLAlthough I despise Windows, and am glad to have it off my computer, I would say 2000. It's up to date, doesn't have the WGA virus, or Windoze update, or Palladium AKA Treacherous Computing, and doesn't use your entire RAM+swap, and has less (though still QUITE a few) security problems. 98 is just plain too old, not to mention constant BSODs.Quote from: linuxlover on March 24, 2008, 05:27:33 PM 98 is just plain too old, not to mention constant BSODs.You are correct Mr DATA, Not to mention the lockups due to 'illegal operation'.Can you explain what (still quite a few ) security issues may exist ? ?Quote from: Broni on March 20, 2008, 07:33:24 PM Windows ME must be the worst OS ever. I've used Windows ME before and the only problem I've got with it is a virus that McAfee doesn't want to get rid of. I do want to install AVG Free Edition, but it has no internet connection. I most people hate Windows ME so much. Then again, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, right?i agree fully i mean who would load XP onto a 486 Computer, so personally here how i determine wat os should be loaded onto the sys depending upon the amount of ram and the speed & type of proccesor. If you want to run Win 98 or Win 98SE i personally would want to run it on a comp with these specs: Pentium 2 with 64MB of RAM for Win 2000 and XP, i pesonally would want to run it on a comp with these specs: Pentium 3 or higher(Win 2000), Pentium 4 or higher(Win XP) with 256MB(For Win 2000), 512MB(For Win XP) llmeyer do you agree with this as well? |

Answer» I work for a company that has a very old computer with Windows 98 on it. The only thing it has on it is a floppy disk drive. No USB, nothing. So what I NEED is a walk down of how to do this. Understand the old MACHINE is very old and very very SLOW! Solve : HELP, with WIN 98? |
Answer» Hello, Someone please help me. I decided to take a Compaq ArmadaE500 from a relative for my young daughter so she can play games and not ruin my computer. Except, I think I ruined hers! I have been trying to load a printer (HPv40) but it locked up mid download. Now I can't start it. I can start it but I always have to turn it off and then on, I get the check system disk error because I wasn't able to shut down properly. Then I get to enter network password and it won't let me bypass this step. This is where it locks up. I try safe mode and it still asks for the network password, I lock up and then I force a shut down. Can someone help me. I'm trying to get to safe mode so that I can get rid of the printer drivers. Then I get to enter network passwordWhat happens when you click Cancel? The same thing happens when I click cancel, ok or escape. It just locks up and freezes. I then force a boot and try to get it into safe mode but nothing.Do you have Windows 98 CD? Since you don't have anything personal on that computer, I'd just reformat it, and reinstall Windows.1. Operating System. Windows 98 Original or Second Edition? 2. The Plan. You should be able to boot to "Command Prompt" from startup menu. Then you can and should verify the integrity of the file system. You can also reload an older VERSION of the registry (one dated before your problems occured). You should be able to recover from this problem. If you are able to successfully boot into Windows (safe mode), I would recommend you defrag the file system since it probably hasn't been done in a while. 3. Startup Menu. Hold down the F8 function key (or tap it about once per second or faster) as you power on the system. If F8 doesn't work for you, restart your computer and hold down the CTRL key during the Power On Self Test (POST). Holding down CTRL may interfere with some POST chores, such as setting up the keyboard or initializing a SCSI controller. If this happens just release CTRL until the POST resumes, and then hold it down again. Once the POST is complete, the Startup menu should appear: Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu ============================ 1. Normal 2. Logged (\BOOTLOG.TXT) 3. Safe mode 4. Step-by-step confirmation 5. Command prompt only 6. Safe mode command prompt only 7. Previous version of MS-DOS Select the "Command prompt only" option and hit "Enter". 4. Scandisk. At a command prompt enter "scandisk /all" and hit "Enter". It will scan and attempt to correct the file system integrity on "all" of your hard disk drives. This will frequently fix many "startup" problems. You can try to restart your Windows 98 system in "normal" or "safe mode" or you can continue to checking and possibly restoring the Windows registry to an older version. 5. Scanreg. At a command prompt enter "scanreg" and hit "Enter". It will check the Windows registry for corruption and load a backup version if problems found. If registry scans Ok, you have option to view backups. You can "View" the backups and select backup with date before your problems BEGAN. If you then select the "Restore" option this will rollback your registry to that date. By default, your system saves the last "five" backup copies of the registry. It automatically makes a backup every day the computer is on. Other useful variations of the "scanreg" command are: > scanreg /opt > scanreg /fix Google them for details. 6. Defrag File System. Boot into Windows Safe Mode. Left click "Start", left click "Run", enter "defrag /all", hit enter. Sit back and watch the "cluster" movements.Hello, SOrry I forgot to mention it is WIn98SE. As said before though, it locks up before I can get past the network password in order to go into safe mode. I would try dos mode but I don't know what to look for or do when I get there. If anyone knows please help. Thanks DonnaQuote from: dahlarbear on April 08, 2008, 05:25:37 PM 2. Have you TRIED booting into the "Command Prompt only" mode yet? Once you've successfully booted into "Command Prompt only" mode, you can execute the "scandisk" and "scanreg" commands mentioned in my earlier post. To the best of my knowledge there isn't a "network password" requested when booting into "Command Prompt only" mode. |

Solve : Windows 98 on SATA? |
Answer» Here is a question for everybody here. I wanted to INSTALL windows 98 on a second hard drive that I will be puchasing in the near future. but not sure if 98 can install on a SATA hard drive. If not, what is the earliest windows OS that can? Thanks! This ARTICLE may help, for starters.O man this is gonna be a lot more difficult than I thought lol. I read this "Beware that changing this configuration on a working system will probably kill an installation of Windows XP." My problem is, I have XP on the computer sounds like I will lose it? Or is that if i partition on the same hard drive? I was thinking of buying a second hard drive and doing it that way. Will that save me from losing XP?I didn't read a lot last night, but from what I saw, you should be able to install Windows 98 Second Edition on a SATA drive.Hmmmmm idk if its possible with a second hard drive. Would windows 2000 be better? like was 2000 BUILT for SATA, or at least better than 98?I would go with Win2K if it is available to you. I don't know if it's being actively supported by Microsoft at this point, but I know there's more drivers available for it, since it is a more recent operating system, and should SUPPORT SATA. |

Solve : Problems booting up!! Windows 98? |
Answer» I'm having big problems starting up. I've serched and tried to start up in safe mode but as it starts in safe mode it says YOUR PROGRAM IS MAKING AN ILLIGAL LINK CALL TO A DLL FILE. Does it identify which "program" or "DLL" file is involved? Can you provide the exact error message (so we can do "exact" SUBSTRING searches thru google)? I'm assuming it doesn't start in "Normal" mode. What are the symptoms when you try to boot to "Normal" mode? 3. Command Prompt Mode. I'm not sure if it's part of "Safe Mode", but you should be able to boot to "Command Prompt Only" via the "Startup Menu. Quote Startup Menu. Hold down the F8 function key (or tap it about once per second or faster) as you power on the system. In normal mode it loads the clouds background but no icons, the screen dosn't seem to be frozen (the mouse still moves the arrow). I did the F8 thing to get safe mode, i'll try again to get the exact error code. It's windows 98, not SE. Pentiun II 233mhz. the machine dosen't hold that much value to me,( it is 10 years old now), but i would like to retreive some files, photos and such. is there another way to do this? mabye swap the hard drive to another machine. many thanks, shane.1. Is there a "task bar" at the bottom with the "Start" button on left. If there is, can you get to "Run" dialog box via "Start" -> "Run"? 2. Startup Menu. Quote from: shane1708 on April 09, 2008, 04:06:26 PM I did the F8 thing to get safe mode, i'll try again to get the exact error code. If you can do the F8 thing to get to safe mode, I'm assuming you have access to the "Command Prompt Only" mode which should successfully boot you into MS-DOS. From MS-DOS you can execute "scandisk" to verify/fix the integrity of the file system (and optionally scan the disk surface for errors/bad spots). You can also execute "scanreg" to optimize, fix, or verify the integrity of the current registry file. It can also be used to display list of registry backups and/or restore from registry backup file. By default, the system saves the last five registry backups, which are automatically created each day Windows is running (one per day). For example: > scandisk /? - to display command syntax and help info > scanreg /? - to display command syntax and help info > scandisk /all - to scan all disk file systems for errors > scanreg - verify integrity of current registry file > scanreg /opt - optimize registry by removing deleted entries > scanreg /fix - correct structural errors within registry > scanreg /restore - restore registry from a backup version. The "Logged" and "Step-by-Step Confirmation" Startup Menu options may also be used to troubleshoot the Normal Mode boot process. You'd want to check your current BIOS first to determine whether the hard drive parameters were SET "manually" or being auto detected because you'd want it configured same way in the other machine. If you mess with the sector address translation algorithm (the hard drive BIOS parameters), you would probably corrupt the data on the hard drive (because you'd be reading and/or writing to the wrong sector addresses).Hi, after trying again in normal mode where i get the clouds (but no task bar) i've tried Alt + F4 and Alt, Ctrl + Delete, after a while i get this message, Fatal exeption OE has occurred at 023F : BFF9DBA7. Solve : 98fe driver wanted? |

Answer» I want to save photos from my old unconnected 98fe pc but can't find a driver to put in a cd burner.I want to get rid of the 98 pc to make room for my new laptop station.Would like HELP PLEASE or suggest another method that won't cost the earth.Thanks.Quote can't find a driver to put in a cd burnerWhat do you mean by this? Can you turn the Windows 98 on at all?Simply hook it up as a slave drive and retrieve the data you need.... Do this on any desktop machine...not the laptop. If you can turn on the computer, you should be able to either burn the data to a cd or put it on a flash drive. What Patio suggested is to take the Hard Drive out of the Windows 98 and hook it up to the working computer as a slave. If you have never used this flash drive with the Windows 98 before, you will have to install it's driver. If you can connect to the Internet, it should be fairly easy. Just go to the manufacturers website and download the driver.98fe driver wanted ...why do you need a driverQuote from: merlin on August 16, 2008, 05:14:01 PM 98fe driver wanted ...why do you need a driver Because it's a USB device that had little or no SUPPORT with WIN98... |

Solve : Windows98 SE? |
Answer» Hi everyone, I've been given an old notebook computer a really old one it's running Windows98SE, the guy who gave it to me said it had not been used for 18 months. the fist time i turned it on i got a the message Invalid Hibernation Partition/File...Run HDPREP did that NOTHING happened HDPREP doesn't exist. I put a music CD in, it didn't work,i went into device manager nothing wrong there went into the properties of the CD everythings OK there to, so i restarted the computer i then noticed the error message this driver is provided by Oak Technology Inc..OTI-91X ATAPI CD-ROM Device Driver, Rev D91XV352 (C) COPYRIGHT Oak Technology Inc 1987-1997-Device Name MSCD001 No Drives found aborting Installation..C:\ LH C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\MSCDEX.EXE/D:MSCD001 DEVICE DRIVER NOT FOUND MSCD001 NO VALID CDROM DEVICE DRIVERS SELECTED, i get this message even when i use the Windows98 boot disk, now it's been years since I've used DOS I've had to relearn it all over again i think I've tried everything, I've been in the Config & Autoexec this week more times than I've had hot dinners all year it still won't work I'm beginning to think it might be the CD-ROM itself but i have no way of testing it. Next i tried the USBs,the USB pendrive i have needs drivers to work in Windows98 I've got the drivers but guess where they are on the CD that came with the pendrive,my CD-ROM won't work! i downloaded some drivers for the USB supposed to work with 99.9 of USBs installed them put the pendrive in and hey presto it got recognised trouble is i can't copy from or to it it won't even play the music files that's on it,one error message tells me to see the administrator the other one tells me to put the original disk in I'm getting really fed up now. So now to the hard part the next time i start the notebook apart from the error messages about HDPREP and no CD-ROM drivers the last error message i get now is Error: An I/O subsystem driver failed to load Either a file in the .\iosubsys subdirectory is corrupt or the system is low on memory. I think you might be able to guess what i said when i saw that, well I've tried this - The maximum cache size is set by adding a "maxfilecache" line to the vcache section of System.ini. The following example shows what an entry in System.ini would look like to set the maximum cache size to 6MB: [vcache] Hello again, thanks for the quick response. My Config.sys is as follows Rem out the two lines I underlined then reboot. If this works you might boot into Win.98 but without cdrom support. The 'no drive' error message means that the driver is not detecting the drive, it might just be a matter of replugging the drive (always awkward on a notebook) or that the drive is unserviceable. Good luckI do not know of any workaround for that error. Here is a discussion on the subject. Replacing the cdrom will improve your chances of installing W.98 |

Solve : HOW TO INSTALL WINDOWS 98 INSIDE A WINDOWS XP OS? |
Answer» hi everyone... Im just trying to figure out if a windows 98 os can be installed inside a windows xp os without doing a PARTITION.. what I mean is that I can have a dual boot (windows 98 and windows xp ) but the hard drive is not partitoned.. If it is possible.. can anyone give me the instructions....thank you Your best bet is to use free M$ Virtual PC: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=04D26402-3199-48A3-AFA2-2DC0B40A73B6&displaylang=en if I can install directly the windows 98 inside windows xpThe only way, I'm aware of is virtual PC.Quote from: Broni on April 12, 2008, 07:17:38 PM Quoteif I can install directly the windows 98 inside windows xpThe only way, I'm aware of is virtual PC. you can also use vmware, which is just another virtual PC type program. An excellent program, which I use myself. It's not free, though.I don't know of anyone who would recommend installing both to the same partition and I've never TRIED it myself (but I'm guessing it's possible). If you try it, you'd better back everything up first. The default installation directory for both OPERATING systems is "c:\Windows". You can specify a different installation directory, but it would be confusing. What file system is the Windows XP operating system using (FAT32 or NTFS)? Windows 98 installs to FAT32 file system (and possibly FAT16). Installing Windows 98 after Windows XP would overwrite the boot record. You'd have to run Windows XP Recovery Console (from CD) to restore the Windows XP boot loader. (Hope it works!)Quote Installing Windows 98 after Windows XP would overwrite the boot record. Solve : 16-bit app on Windows 98 HELP!? |
Answer» I NEED to run a 16-bit WINDOWS program on Windows 98. I have been using it before on this computer until recently. Every time I run it it says "out of memory" but I have about 50 MB free (I know thats not much it is an old computer). This program that I am using uses only about 2 MB of memory. Why won't it work? Quote I have about 50 MB freeI'm assuming, this is free space on your hard drive? What is the whole hard drive size? Some details would be helpful... What Program ? Did it work previously ? Post a copy of your autoexec.bat and config.sys and we'll have a looksee... P.S. I believe you're confusing free space with memory...they are different. Some 16 bit programs needed tweaking to recognise extended memory in Windows which is another reason details would be good...When I say I have 50 MB free memory, I mean RAM. The hard drive space is not the problem. And Yes, it has worked previously. The program I am trying to run is something I made, but I am SURE that the problem is not with my code because I have used it a lot of times before this happened. Here is the config.sys: Code: [Select]DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS DOS=HIGH,UMB,AUTO FILESHIGH=80 BUFFERSHIGH=40,4 DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CPQIDECD.SYS /D:IDECD001 SHELL=C:\COMMAND.COM /P /E:2048 And here is the autoexec.bat: Code: [Select]@IF ERRORLEVEL 1 PAUSE C:\ESSAUDIO.COM -BLASTER @ECHO OFFIf it's something you made there's no way we could offer help or guess at what it is without seeing it. What is this thing you made...or how about some info. You could have 1 eror in one line of code and well you get the idea...Here is some info about the program: The program was made in Visual Basic 3.0. It is a program manager and has ICONS that will launch a specified program. I USE it instead of windows explorer. The program paths and the icon names are stored in an .ini FILE on drive C. I have used this for about 3 months with no problems and have not changed any of the code since then. Here is what might have caused the problem: I installed printer drivers for two new printers an HP LaserJet 1020 and a Epson photo RX620. I then installed firefox. The computer crashed wile using firefox so I turned it off manually. After all of this has been uninstalled my program still gives an out of memory error. I have used some tools to monitor the memory but they all say there is about 50 MB free. That doesn't make sense because my program doesn't use that much. |

Solve : Win 98SE Printer Driver For HP Deskjet 990c? |
Answer» The subject DRIVER has a file name: hp_990-enu-win9x_ME.zip . It is no longer available from hp's website as of June 2007 for download. Every website that I've tried to get the driver from apparently takes me to hp's website, which is then a dead end. Is there any other way that I MAY TRY to obtain this driver? Is your printer one of these: Software & Driver downloads? The website that you gave me is HP's and they will no longer make that driver available. (What I understand is that once Microsoft no longer supported WIN 98SE, Hewlett-Packer (hp) destroyed all of there copies of WIN 98SE drivers.) What I need is for somebody who still has a copy of that driver and could send it to me. This is because it appears that all the websites that I found that claim to be able to get you a copy of that driver link you back to hp's. And that is a dead end.Try here... Try here...I just joined (elected the free membership) and confirmed they have win9x_me.zip for hp deskjet 990c series. If you haven't joined yet, be aware that you'll be bombarded with commercial offers during the sign-up procedure, but you can decline them and still get the free membership, which apparently gives you access to part of their drivers database. |

Solve : Windows 98 installation? |
Answer» Hi there, When i boot the PC with the W98-cd rom, for some dark reason, the computer sees the internal memory as drive a:\ and the 3,5"" - drive as drive b:\. Many floppy drive ribbon cables have connectors for two floppy DRIVES. The end connector (with twist in cable?) is drive "A:", the middle connector is drive "B:". Is it possible the floppy drive is on the middle connector? You aren't required to make the bootable disk during installation. You can make it later: o Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs o Add/Remove Programs PROPERTIES windows appears o Select "Startup Disk" tab, PRESS "Create Disk..." button. Not sure if it will allow you to write to drive "B:", however. So you should RESOLVE this issue before you need the startup disk (boot floppy that you don't have yet). |

Solve : Essential folders/files to run Windows 98? |
Answer» I am running a Pentium I 133 MHz machine with a 300 GB HDD partitioned into C, D, E, F. It has been running fine, Internet access O.K., etc. but I CONTINUE getting this message: Your C; drive is running out of space." I would delete or move many files to correct this issue BUT I don't know what files/folders to move/delete. Is there somewhere a list of essential files need by Windows 98? Thanks for any HELP.For Windows to run properly, I would stay out of C:\Windows and to keep all your programs, stay out of C:\Program Files Your C; drive is running out of space. Just to be clear... Have you verified the C: drive is running out of space? What is total size of "C:" and how much free space is left? In MegaBytes or GigaBytes not percentage(s).Win98 pretty much needs all of them to run...this isn't the place to be trimming things out for hard drive space. You can configure Windows 98 to place "swap" file on another partition, reboot, then delete the old one on the "C:" drive. o Right click on "My Computer", System Properties window appears. o Left click on "Performance" tab, it's page comes to foreground. o Left click on "Virtual Memory" button, Virtual Memory windows appears. o Left click on "Let me specify my own virtual memory settings". o Left click on pull down list for "Hard disk" entry. o Select a logical drive for file and specify "Minimum", "Maximum" size for swap file. o Select "OK", "OK" again to exit and reboot.Somehow i don't think the swapfile is creating the issue...but without more info on what's on C: we'll never know. |

Solve : Windows 98se usb fix? |

Answer» My usb doesn't see my new external cd burner. I downloaded the fix for this but it doesn't do anything. It recommends doing something with BIOS. What is that? My digital camera works on usb, but my webcam quit working years ago, but I don't use it so I never tried to fix it. Is it all related?? On registry repair it comes up with several missing files and one is "Wondows\INF\catalog\usb.cat" Does that mean anything? I'm not sure what it means, but I'd leave the registry alone for now.Have you tried NUSB ? Iomega CD-RW USB (52x32x52) Windows 98/98SE Driver(s) Drive Specifications User's Manual QUICK Install Guide 3. For most USB devices you install any needed USB drivers before the hardware is connected to the computer. That way, when the device is connected, the computer is able to find the "correct" driver. o From Device Manager within Windows (with the USB CD Drive connected and powered on), "uninstall" any USB drivers currently loaded for the external USB CD Drive. o From Device Manager within Windows (with the USB CD Drive connected and powered on), "remove" the USB CD device if it's still there. o Disconnect the external CD Drive from the computer. o Reboot Windows 98 SE. o Download and install the Windows 98/98SE Driver(s) on your computer. o Reboot Windows 98 SE o With the external CD drive disconnected, ensure it's powered on (and connected to power source if self-powered). o Connect the drive to the computer. Best bet is USB port on back of computer (USB 2.0 port if possible). o Computer should recognize USB device has been connected, interrogate it for "type", and load the appropriate driver (which has been previously installed). o Take a look within Device Manager and see if it looks OK. No items flagged with yellow or red symbols and no error codes such as (code 10). This should load the USB drivers that Windows 98SE needs. If everything goes well, you can then load the application software provided on the IOMega CD (from your new external CD drive). Thanks for the help I reloaded windows 98 on the computer from my recovery disc and then downloaded and loaded a free autopatch for 98. The CD burner loaded itself and is working OK.I came across the following website today: Advanced USB Trouble Shooting. As it's WRITTEN for Windows 9x/ME, it should come in handy for future troubleshooting. Another good site (that you could disappear in for days) is: USBMan. Since you successfully resolved your current USB issue, I'm sure you can handle it.Was the autopatcher from MSFN Forums ? ? Otherwise known as the "Unofficial Win98 Service Pack" I don't remember right off where I found this patch. I did see the unofficial version but I was afraid to use it. The Auto-Patch showed the 5 windows updates that I downloaded over the years from MS, so I used it. The CD burner works but now I have many other problems. I started a new software question about twunk 16 and vwin 32 errors. This thing is driving me crazy. |

Solve : Still using Windows 98? |
Answer» I am a holdout Windows 98 user (800 MHz Pentium III processor, 256 MB RAM). After every new RELEASE of a Microsoft OS since then, I've heard each one has significant problems which kept me from getting a new system. My computer will be 8 years old in June, but now I'm having problems with the sound not functioning unless I re-boot several times - sometimes when I go to shut down I get blue screens saying I have fatal exception errors OE & OD and when I go to any Web sites that require Shockwave, that really upsets my system. windows xp pro version has more advanced features, such as better networking. If you can get XP professional over XP home, then go for it. i have personally have always used XP pro Assuming you can find a copy. Note that the difference between Professional and Home are about $100 USD. In Australia, Microsoft have cut all sales of all Windows OP's except Vista. I needed to borrow a friends Windows XP installation disk to re-format my compXP Pro is the better os, but in your case...XP Home Edition will suffice...It's not that difficult to find XP Pro.And the differences in the OS aren't HUGE. |
