Solve : You know how Windows Error Reporting was introduced in Windows XP??

Answer» LOOK at the attached .png file.

I'm scared...

EDIT: Yes, I sent the error report, and got sent to this page: Error Report Page

[attachment deleted by admin]part of Internet EXPLORER, that dialog.

(Notice the "restart" option, this isn't present on an XP dialog)I just now came up with the idea that something like ClamWin (you can see it in the taskbar) might have intercepted the problem. The strange thing is that Norton CrashGuard remained quiet.

Oh, and BTW, I had to restart Explorer before taking the screenshot.

EDIT: The report page recommends Windows Update but they dropped Win98SE SUPPORT ages agoGrab a scrn shot of the "click here" MESSAGE the next time the error occurs.....usually a problem with a dll file...the information there may help....This may be relevant to your mouse problem in another thread.....some form of conflict happening.No, the 'problem' was that I was WONDERING how come I actually got the dialog; it's in Windows XP and later...I'm used to IE6 crashing sometimes.

I need to know the steps on how to install a logitech quickcam chat webcam on windows ME. Is this the webcam you're LOOKING for drivers for?
http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/SCANNER-Digital-CAMERA-WEBCAM/LOGITECH/Logitech-QuickCam-Chat-848-build-1034A.shtmlThanks. I did recently download that software and other different ONES. I do believe that 8.4.8 is the right one. I was not sure of the driver to use for the camera but I setup the driver CALLED logitech quickcam chat in the control panels "find new hardware". The new problem is that when I tried to use quick capture it had a screen that said something like the camera is being used by another application, but I don't know what to do about that. Can you help me out?do you use any other software besides the logitech software for your cam? And is it USB or Parallel PortI did not use any other software and it is USB.A bit off topic but I'm wondering why your still using ME?
It was supposed the worst Windows OS.It is my girlfriend's COMPUTER which uses Windows Me. So I finally got to upgrade to XP and the webcam works. Thanks to those that helped me.

Solve : Win 98 fresh Install cant run in DOS mode?

Answer»

"This program cannot run in DOS mode" I get this when I type SETUP to install win98.. Help!!!!!!!! I think maybe the setup.exe you are using is for running from within Windows, which is why you are getting the error message that it can't be run from DOS.

You could try the setup.exe in the \win98\ folder.

I completly formatted my hard drive and ran the BOOT disk and put windows starts here cd in and when I type SETUP at the e: it GIVES me that error.See my above post.

I completly formatted my hard drive and ran the boot disk and put windows starts here cd in and when I type SETUP at the e: it gives me that error.

I'm assuming that drive D: is a secondary hard drive / partition. You could still try typing 'D:SETUP'. Or you could try setting your CMOS to allow booting from the CD-ROM, and only have the CD inserted on boot. I think the Windows CD has boot disc capability.try install not setupThe drive is not formatted properly then...
Provide more info on the history of this machine what steps you have taken so far and info on the hardware involved...Nobody took any notice of my post.

..but I have another computer that I put together from miscellaneous parts and is fully functional... I'll stick that win 95 on there and see how it goes..

Cricket_Lover why did you censor out your volume name and serial number
you cannot find out any info with thatI can't work on this right this second, my wireless adapter crashed the computer, a re-install of Windows failed (it lost it's hardware profile), and now I can't get the old install to go to anything above 640x480x4. If any of you could help, I believe I have the correct video card drivers installed, and the monitor is set to Plug-n-play, it being a model not listed on the monitors list. But the computer is sure the BIOS video card is of the specified model, I'll have to look at my backup of the Dell Documentation I have on this computer (a Windows XP)

Oh, and with the serial number and volume name, I have my last name in the volume name, and the serial number is a serial number. I don't want people claiming my HDD.

EDIT: I just remembered I had this problem at one other point, after I accidentially discovered the Windows installer, which inheriently erased my hardware profile, and locked the computer at 640x480x4. It had just about the same hardware as it does now; the only real difference for now is a 5 port USB 2.0 PCI card. Once I get this working again, I'll see about getting a system set up which will allow me access to my 300GB External HDD through DOS. I will then back up the ENTIRE hard drive to it. And USE MS Backup or some other thing which will allow me to update the backup. I guess I'll also set up Norton Rescue Disk.Quote from: Cricket_Lover on August 24, 2009, 04:22:08 PM

the volume name makes sense, but I think the serial number causes some confusion- it isn't, literally, the serial number of the drive itself- but rather a random number generated when the drive is formatted. Each partition, in fact, gets it's own serial number.

I'm not even sure what it's for... a lot of anti-piracy techniques make use of it, though.

I'm guessing that the anti-pirated software, when installed, makes an encrypted backup of the serial number into one of it's files (or the registry), which would forbid you from making a copy of the program directory and moving it to another computer. At least, there is a 1/100000000 (?) chance of it working, but it is an interesting alternative to severe rootkit-based softwares like SecuROM (ReClaimYourGame.com for very technical information about it).something like that. Too bad you can change the serial number... although it takes direct disk editing to do so.

Editpad Pro actually uses the serial number somehow, since when I replaced my HD it stopped running... and then I Norton Disk Edited the old Serial number into the Volume headers, and it WORKED again.

At least it's less invasive, and it's not really circumventable by the average joe.Just got the video card working correctly again, the computer is very strange...

The video card is an Intel something, and it had it's drivers loaded. I
told it to use new drivers, selecting the EXACT SAME DRIVER, closed the Display Properties dialog box (I used it's Advanced button), restarted the computer, got notified of the case having been opened (I was looking for the model number, which I found in my DxDiag), typed 'win', and at the login screen, I noticed it was using the 3D mouse cursor. I logged in, and my wallpaper was the full 16/24 bit, instead of the ugly 4 bit...

Well, I STILL need cursor help. In the mean time, I'll get the wireless adapter put back on that computer.did the mouse cursor flicker in the terriable 640x480 res?Quote from: smeezekitty on August 24, 2009, 10:45:25 PM

Solve : Re-installing Windows 95 and can't get cd-rom drive to work.?

Answer»

I am a newbie to this forum and am hoping someone out there much more knowledgeable out there can help me. I'm am pretty un-informed when it comes to this stuff. My old computer is being pressed into service for the kids, and something went so wrong I decided to re-install windows 95 in an effort to fix it. The other option is to give the computer to the E-cycle station, but I have three kids and could really use another computer. Anyway, here is the thing. I have created a Windows 95 startup disk when I started this, and I have the Windows 95 CD-rom Setup Boot Disk and the Windows 95 CD. I am trying to rebuild the computer, but cannot get it to recognize or use the CD-rom to complete the install. I have copied down some info that I see on the dos screens and hope it will give some clues. I have tried several things that are on the forum but don't seem to be getting further.

Here is some of the screen info:

HDD Primary Master :Maxtor 84000A6
HDD Secondary Slave :Matshita CR-585

Pentium - MMX CPU 166 MHZ
Memory 32768K OK
ATC-5000 BIOS VER: 1.0 002
Award Modular BIOS V 4.51 PG

Secondary Slave Disk : CDRom Mode 3

I get to the point in the install where it gives the A:\ prompt and I am to put in the Windows 95 CD to complete the install, however it doesn't recognize the CDROM drive, so of course this doesn't work.

I have checked and the computer seems to be recognizing the installed CD-rom as it lists it as the Secondary Slave Disk as above. I have also checked the autoexec.bat and config.sys and don't see any rem statements and the device name matches up between the two. The C drive has the following files:

command.com
autoexec.bat
config.sys
\DEV which contains
atapi_cd.sys
mscdex.exe

The autoexec.bat file contains the following line:

C:\dev\mscdex.exe /D:mscd000 /V /M:12

The config.sys file contains the following line:

Device = C:\Dev\Atapi_cd.sys /D:mscd000 /i:0

Don't know if upper/lower case are an issue but I think they are the same even if I didn't type them as such.

I have also got a disk for CD-ROM Device Drivers Version 97.03.17 and Monster 3D Windows 95 Drivers Version 1.00 but don't know if these drivers are for this computer as it seems we get a new computer every couple years and I don't really keep track of what goes with what. Usually we don't need this stuff as everything is already installed and I don't really have the first clue of what to do. Also my DOS commands are pretty much all forgotten and getting this far has been a challenge, so if there is anything I should try in dos, please send the command and how to use it.

I know I'm asking alot, and hopefully there is someone out there who can give me a clue, and perhaps some of this info will be useful.After reading your post, I think the problem you are having is with the locations of the called driver.

If you are looking to reinstall Windows:
go to http://www.bootdisk.com/
Put the created boot disk in the 95' computer
also put the CD in the 95' computer
Restart it

Then once the boot disk loads, type:
R:\setup.exe

This should do it. (CD ROM drive turns into R:\ with a http://www.bootdisk.com/ bootdisk) Or better yet use a Win98SE bootdisk as more CD drives are supported with it. Format c:\u, then use the setup routine as mentioned by Zylstra.

Hey, you guys are great! I downloaded the boot file from the website you mentioned and things went better after that. The install wizard did get a little confused about halfway through as it couldn't find the path using the R drive and so I had it skip some files as I didn't realize it had re-mapped the drive to E somewhere along the process. Makes you wonder why Microsoft's install wizard is capable of correctly finding 95% of the stuff but can't find the rest. I didn't even think of downloading another boot disk because I had the original microsoft stuff, but really i should know better. Anyway, I remember the DIRECTORY it had problems with so I am going to take a look and see if I can manually copy the missing files, otherwise I will re-do the install. At least I have confidence it will work now!

I really appreciate the help. I just couldn't see spending $100 to get someone else to install this stuff when this computer isn't really worth that much. Now I need to figure out my display stuff. I noticed that it installed with 16 bit color and I think changing that was what got me into trouble last time. I don't know if it is the chip that is limiting the color or if the monitor is so old it only allows it. I need to do some looking I guess. I have two older monitors, one older than the other, and frankly alot of the reader rabbit software I want for my 3 and 5 yr olds are from the oldest who is now 12, so perhaps this isn't a problem. Reader Rabbit Learn to Read taught my son to read by himself when he was 5 and he loved it, so I am hoping for the same success with the girls. Unfortunately being home the last 5 years with them has perhaps caused some dry-rot to settle in and the old gears aren't turning as fast as they used to be! (Perhaps I am just looking for an excuse not to get the taxes done!)

Cat In order for the graphics to work properly you need to install the correct drivers....
Did you re-install the MBoard drivers after installing Win98 ? ?
Is it ONBOARD grapiics or a video card ? ? Okay, so I am back to where I start. Here is the deal. I should really just turn off my computers so that I don't break anything else. I got the cd-rom working and all, but I WANTED to make things better. I have two old computers, both pentiums, one our old one and one an old work put together one with an old monitor. Ours is about 8 years old now, but it was decent at the time, and the monitor is an Acer 54E. I got ours working with the ancient monitor and it only had 16 bit color, so I wanted to get it going with our newer monitor. I changed the display to 256 color because I am pretty sure the VGA card allows it, and then it needed to re-boot. When it came back it was just a black screen with green lines. I tried changing to the Acer monitor because I thought it might handle it, but it just gives me the black screen. So now I can't see anything to change back to 16 bit color, so I did a re-install again and customized it to use Acer 55 as the monitor as I couldn't find 54E on the list. I needed to hook up to the old monitor while doing this as I still get a black screen with the occaisional flicker on the Acer. Still nothing when I hook up the Acer, and when it re-boots at the end of the re-install I still get the black screen with green lines on the old monitor as well, presumable because the color display hasn't changed. I don't know how to change the display so it seems I am back to square one and need to re-install after formating the hard-drive again to wipe everything out. I know the Acer monitor works as I have been using it with the older computer just fine, but I don't know if the older computer's VGA card is good enough to handle more than 16 bit display, so I wanted to swap monitors.

Here is the real question! Does anyone know how I can find out what Video cards I am using and what monitors are setup on my computer, preferably in dos? Then perhaps I could change the settings. Also, anyone know how one undoes changes like this to display when you can't see anything because you buggered your display?

I hope I am not too confusing!! My best advice, never have more kids than computers in your house, or you will be spending your Saturdays trying to bring old things back to life!!!

CatPatio:

I know you are trying to ask me something but I have no idea what. I have disks for drivers, but it doesn't tell you in the read-me files what the drivers are for ie. what particular piece of hardware. I have some Monster 3D drivers, plug and play drivers etc, but I don't know what I need. I don't know what Mboard drivers are, and I also don't know if it is onboard graphics or a video card or what the difference is. Sorry to be so clueless.

Here is one hint that may help. On the back of this computer there is a little jumper cord from the monitor plug that goes down to the next slot and plugs in there and you plug the monitor in beside it. We think it means there is a Video card that you take the display through? Does that sound right? As you can see I am way out of my league here.

Cat Try booting to safe mode and change the display back to its original setting. DLoad and install Everest Home and save a log of what it shows for video components....post it here and we can continue...You should obtain Windows 98SE, it's a lot more versatile and reliable than Windows 95. Not to mention its still a wee-bit compatible with nowadays hardware/fads. First question...what is Everest Home?

Anyway, the update. I formated the harddrive and re-installed windows 95 (I have the disks and don't want to buy new). I did some digging and found references to ATI VGA Wonder and ATI Graphics Pro Turbo PCI (mach 64 Rage/GT) I went to ATI's website and found my hardware too old to download drivers, and that is when I twigged. I remembered seeing an ATI disk for something in the disk bin and pulled it out and installed drivers. I re-booted and now have 256 bit color. yeah.

Anyway, I tried to swap monitors again, still have a blank screen on the Acer, but at this point don't really care as both oldies are now running 256 bit color. I have selected the Acer Monitor in the system, but still nothing so I think I will leave well enough alone.

Thanks for everyone's help and suggestions. I couldn't have done it without you!!! (but none-the-less I am still proud of myself for perservering. ) Would I be dating myself too badly if I admitted that I started my CAREER working on computers that filled rooms bigger than alot of city blocks?

Cat Those were the days when we actually spent in the computer instead of using it. But don't worry, I won't spill the beans. You worked on Univac ? ? ?

Solve : How to reboot w 95 or w98 using a floppy bootdisk?

Answer»

Hi everyone:
I am new in IT, so I would LIKE to know how to REBOOT a system using a floppy bootdisk. I am using some equipment with windows 95 and 98 operating system.
I made a bootdisk several times and tried to reboot, but unfortunately I found no result to my procedure. It is very possible that I do not follow the appropiate steps.
Please tell me how?

Thank you all You need to set the FDD as the first boot device in your BIOS. Possibly F2 or Del when you turn on the PC. Navigate with arrow keys.

If you haven't got a clue what I'm on about, it's time to introduce you to the first rule of us IT'ers: Read the (mainboard) manual. And travel to bootdisk.com for all your bootable floppy needs...you can even make CD's.It sounds as if he is trying to run windows from a boot floppy. It won't work. At best he can boot to DOS, with or without CDrom support. If he boots from a floppy, he would have to CHANGE to the C: drive, cd\windows, and start win.com from there.

Solve : Colour with FORTRAN g95 in Windows XP??

Answer»

Can you have background and foreground text colours in executable programs, compiled with the free FORTRAN compiler g95, to run in Windows XP?

I have old FORTRAN 77 source CODE that when compiled produces a 16 bit executable that can run c/o ntvdm.exe with SIMPLE colours USING ANSI.sys escape sequences with the simple addition of an ansi.sys entry in my \System32\CONFIG.NT file.

I have been given to believe that this technique is not available for the 32 bit executables produced by g95.

This is born out by the fact that screen output from these executables is not in colour.

Is there away to bring colour back to my newly compiled 32 bit executables?In the absence of any expert advice I have tried my approach of try it and see!

So since the 77 code used write(6,'(''escape cope")') to output the ansi escape sequences I tried the following with gfortran but unfortunately with no success.

My FORTRAN program:

program coltest
c Version abc170607
write(6,'(''color 09'')')
write(6,'(''color '',i1,i1)')0,9
10 write(6,*)
write(6,*)
write(6,'('' Some text'')')
write(6,'('' *********'')')
write(6,*)
end

and what you get:

C:\FORTRAN\SourceCode>gfortran -o coltest coltest.for

C:\FORTRAN\SourceCode>coltest
color 09
color 09

Some text
*********

I guess this is no surprise really.

color 09 works at the command prompt but seemingly does not when output with a write statement more's the pity!
As my 90 year old uncle said to me recently, "HOPE springs eternal".
Yes I have had one of those Eureka moments!

So just to complete the picture after some digging and delving I came up with what just may be the obvious and it works!

program coltest
c Version Les200607
character(8 ) command
command(1:8 )='color 08'
CALL SYSTEM(COMMAND)
end program coltest

Compiled with both the g95 and gfortran compilers this LITTLE routine changes the screen background and text colours in accordance with this:

C:\My FORTRAN>color /?
Sets the default console foreground and background colors.

COLOR [attr]

attr Specifies color attribute of console output

Color attributes are specified by TWO hex digits -- the first
corresponds to the background; the second the foreground. Each digit
can be any of the following values:

0 = Black 8 = Gray
1 = Blue 9 = Light Blue
2 = Green A = Light Green
3 = Aqua B = Light Aqua
4 = Red C = Light Red
5 = Purple D = Light Purple
6 = Yellow E = Light Yellow
7 = White F = Bright White

If no argument is given, this command restores the color to what it was
when CMD.EXE started. This value either comes from the current console
window, the /T command line switch or from the DefaultColor registry
value.

The COLOR command sets ERRORLEVEL to 1 if an attempt is made to execute
the COLOR command with a foreground and background color that are the
same.

Example: "COLOR fc" produces light red on bright white

C:\My FORTRAN>

Les.

Solve : Safe Mode in Windows 98?

Answer»

I have an 8 YEAR old Compaq running on WINDOWS 98. I have difficulty logging onto the system and when I do, the text is magnified so large that I cannot perform any functions. Must be a virus? My question is, what functions can I perform while in SAFE Mode? I have no problems with Safe Mode. I have a new state-of-the-art system and ultimately I'd like to be able to retrieve my important documents from the old computer and somehow transfer them to my new system. Any ideas? Thanks for any assistance.It sounds like you are booting with a low resolution. Have you tried changing to higher resolution (in normal mode). Safe mode always uses 640/480 and it can't be changed in safe mode. RIGHT click the desktop, select properties, click the settings TAB, move the slider to the right, click apply. If the current resolution does not allow you to see the apply button, press A on the keyboard.

What's up with the giant tooth?It MYSTERIOUSLY appears when a thread gets to the point of pulling teeth to get the info required to solve an issue..."like pulling teeth" is an idiom: http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/like+pulling+teethSorry Soybean, I installed the latest version of DirectX and it didnt HELP, im guessing theres no way to increase my video memory.Have you accessed your BIOS to see whether it will let you allocate more memory to your video/display adapter?

If you have an expansion slot (AGP or PCI) in which you could install an add-on video card, WOULD purchase of a card be an option? What spending LIMIT would you like to put on this? It could less than $50, or more, depending on the specs of the card.

Solve : windows 98 help?

ok im not very informed on specific PART. the IDE ribbon is the flat cord connect to the HD correct? and i follow the intructions. but if there is no current os i STILL need to do the whole bootable floppy ordeal?and it has a password on the setup screen is there anyway to bypass this?come on guys. any help?You need the BOOT floppy to see if you can log the hard drive to see what's on it...
A password in the setup routine was not mentioned earlier...
If this is a laptop Good Luck.
If not remove the CMOS battery about the size of a dime located on the motherboard.
Do this with the power cord unplugged and hit the power switch a few times to DISCHARGE stored energy.
Be careful removing the battery...you don't want to break it's holder.

Post back with your progress...

Solve : Windows 98 Frustration?

Answer»

My older Gateway 2000 runs on Windows 98 and it has a new problem that frustrates the h... out of me. When I turn the computer on, it goes through the initial boot phase then flashes a DOS message "Windows protection error. Your need to restart your computer." When I restart, it wants me to start in safe mode, which I do. It boots up okay, so I do a shut down - restart, which then opens Windows 98 in its regular mode and works fine thereafter.

However, whenever I shut down that computer -- even in standby -- it flashes the protection error message, and I have to go through the whole procedure again. I wouldn't worry about it, except that my elderly HP ScanJet 5100C is hooked up to that computer, and that item isn't supported for Windows XP, which is what I have on my laptop. I know I should be updating some of this old equipment, but it still works fine (except the Gateway, which operates okay once Windows settles in).

I went to Microsoft Support and read a couple of articles about protection errors, but they didn't cover my specific problem. Can somebody out there help me figure out what to do?Are you just getting "Windows protection error" or is it stating any other additional information such as issues initializing vkd.

Have you also tried using a different mouse and keyboard on the computer? Often this issue is caused by a faulty keyboard.Are you just getting "Windows protection error" < NATHAN's first response* this gave me an idea_

With all that older hardware ( mobo ) I am gonna guess you are having this ..............

Windows GENUINE Advantage (WGA) is an anti-piracy system enacted by Microsoft that enforces Microsoft Windows online validation of the authenticity of several RECENT Microsoft operating systems when accessing several Microsoft Windows services, such as Windows Update, and downloading from the Microsoft Download Center.

It also advertises Service Pack 2 of Windows XP, which requires manual intervention to disable. Previously voluntary, it became mandatory for use of these services in July 2005..

These automatic Updates / security features can sometimes WREAK havoc on certain ahhh illegal Windows Products] just guessing...............I don't believe WGA applies to Windows 98 machines. Microsoft does not release any updates for this operating system any more unless it's an absolute security to all versions of Windows.for Windows XP, which is what I have on my laptop just guessing here Quote from: keithmacsd on August 29, 2007, 08:34:41 PM

Solve : Windows 98 Compaq quickrestore problem?

Answer»

After my original (yes, original) hard drive quit, I used the second drive I had installed and did a quick restore. After the restore, I installed the ethernet drive and it seems to be OK. Now I can't access the internet. One note, the OEM reminder pop-up comes on at every start-up and will not finish the auditing session when the BUTTON is pushed."I installed the ethernet drive and it seems to be OK" Do you mean "ethernet driver"?
Did you check device manager to see if it is REALLY "OK"?

Solve : Program crashes (16 bit in win98)?

Answer»

Hello, I use Solway´s Clean system directory to move unused dlls to a BACKUP folder. http://www.theabsolute.net/sware/#clnsys

Now I have the problem that it crashes after a time it starts scanning (it used to work). I get the ERROR I paste below. I searched and it seems could be a problem related to a 16 bit program running in windows 32 bit (I have windows 98 SE). From the program files: For use with Windows 3.1 and Windows 95.

I don´t know how to fix it.

I have in config.sys (I think these lines allow DOS programs to run):
DEVICEHIGH = C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\setver.exe
DEVICEHIGH = C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS
DOS = HIGH,UMB

Solve : 98se - XP compatability?

Answer»

Hi guys
Hopefully you can help me I’m running WINDOWS 98SE and thinking of upgrading.
The main problem I have is a program called TIMES FAMILY TREE this program was designed for windows 95/98 and IVE tried to install it on my laptop which runs XP but it won’t work.
It’s taken me 10 years to gather all the information and compile it on my desktop pc and ive been told that I would “simple” have to install a newer version and input all 10 years of data again, surely this cant be the case??.
Can you tell me if there is a patch or SOMETHING that I could use so that I could make my 95/98 copy of “times family tree” work with XP.

Regards
Keiron
have you tried running the program with the compatibility options?
Right click on the link and choose properties. Then go to the compatibility tab. From there it should be pretty self explanatory.
Good luck.

my javascript seems to be disabled (ive checked everything and it SAYS its on), smilies dont work exept for manually typing out, certain websites dont work(hotmail.com comes on w/blank screen), when you incorrectly SHUT it down and it automatically runs a self-diagnostic test, it says to run scan disk for windows because of an invalid long filename. I believe the problem is called jre-1_5_0_12-windows-i586-p-s.exewhen i run the scan disk program, it keeps getting interupted by another program editing the computer. I then shut down every system possible(i cant shut down all of them, then my computer will shut down). It sounds like a virus, but i really dont know. Thanks in advance for helping me!Try updating your Java program.

What PROTECTION do you have on your comp?Zone Alarm, Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D v.4, and an out dater Dr. Solomons program that uses javascript to update it. I cant update my java, everywhere i go it uses javaI believe this is an updated version of Java: (click here). Some other good free antivirus programs to try are SUPERAntiSpyware and AVG.I clicked the top right Java install link? is this right? When i click on Windows Platform - Java Application Platform SDK Update 2 No JDK it takes me to the top of the pageJavascript and Java is not the same thing. Your browser handles Javascript, you don't need to have Java installed in order for JavaScript to function.

What browser are you using?
What version of windows is this?
Did you install or remove anything around the time this problem STARTED?

It is although a good idea to keep Java up to date for security reasons. Go here to get the latest version.

Solve : defrag win98 with ME defrag??

Answer»

WillyW:

I have TRIED all three; Win98, WinME, and Diskeeper Lite 7.0 (DKLite) defrag; and I am reporting from personal experience. I installed DKLite defrag on my WinME system and used it for many months. In the standard installation it coexists with the standard WinME defrag. If you access the defrag utility from the "tools" tab of the "properties" dialog of a logical disk, it serves up the DKLite utility. If you access the defrag utility from the Windows Start Menu, as in Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter, it serves up the standard WinME defrag.

I use a small 512 MB USB Flash Drive to port files back and forth. I also use floppy disks for diagnostic tools. I like to KEEP them defragged for performance purposes. Since my flash drive is pretty full, I prefer to keep whatever space is available in a contiguous block at the end. DKLite did not do this for me and it does not support floppy drives (at least that's my recollection). Since I could never remember to defrag these from the "System Tools" submenu, I would always end up accessing the defrag utility twice before I got the right one. Because of the inconvenience to me I finally uninstalled DKLite.

That said, DKLite worked fine and is MUCH faster than the standard Win9x/ME defrag utilities. The defrag tools for WinXP (obviously not for Win9x/ME systems) also leave "available" cluster gaps in the file system. They defrag files and do a pretty good job of packing them tight, but they won't sacrifice performance (total defrag time) to do it. Nor should they.

I, like you, wondered whether a first pass by DKLite could quickly defrag files while a second pass by the standard Windows defrag (WinME in my case) would finish the job. The answer is yes, it does. But not that fast. Window defrag spends a lot of time sliding file cluster blocks up to close gaps. I should also add that since I defrag regularly, I didn't have a lot of tiny defragged file pieces to put TOGETHER, so not the best test. But for me it wasn't worth the effort.

Enough already... Try it you'll like it... It works as advertised... dahlarbearThank you for an update DKLite leaves gaps ...i'm not sure what this is supposed to mean...Quote from: dahlarbear on October 21, 2007, 05:41:25 PM

Ah. Ok. Understand now.

And thanks for commenting from your experience. That's very intesting.Patio:

I have re-installed Diskeeper Lite 7.0 BUILD 418 (DKLite) on my HP Pavilion 6736 computer running Windows ME. DKLite works as designed and is an excellent product. I again used it to defrag several of the logical drives (FAT32) on my hard disk and a 512MB Lexar USB Jump Drive (formatted Fat16). I did not benchmark this, but I believe it is faster than WinME defrag.exe. DKLite successfully defragged all of my drives except for the floppy drive which it apparently doesn't support. While I believe it defragged all of the files, the result was not one contiguous block of allocated clusters followed by one contiguous block of free clusters. There were a handful of free cluster "gaps" (six or less) within the range of allocated clusters. Not a big deal, but Win98 and WinME tightly pack all allocated clusters into what appears to be a single contiguous block of allocated clusters followed by the remaining free clusters in a single contiguous block. Again not a big deal. DKLite is an excellent product and I will probably leave it on my system to maintain option of using it. It was removed earlier during a "spring cleaning" of my hard drive.

Any chance this thread could "... go softly into the night".

Solve : qwerty -> azerty win 98(can't use CD)?

Answer»

I want to recover an OLD computer.
just for fun but still.
it works with a pcmcia card to connect to the Internet.
But at the end it was broken and never fixed.
I was able to restore the Internet connection but somehow that also resetted the keyboard back to QWERTY.
Now when I want to change that back to azerty I need the CD.
That wouldn't be a problem if the cd-ROM would still work.
But it doesn't.
Now here is my question:
Can I change it back to azerty without the cd?

Thanks in advance

Jonas Try this

From Start menu, select Settings then Control Panel.

Start Keyboard and select Input Locales tab sheet.

Click Add... button.

Select desired Input locale, Keyboard layout/IME.

Make sure Enable indicator on TASKBAR is checked and click OK.I only have a tap:

It is win 98 second edition
When I try to change the laguage EN then click the OK button it promps to put in the CD with label: Win 98 second edition

Solve : 95?

Answer»

i am currently (was lol) running windows xp pro on my computer.....i put an old hard drive in my computer to pull off some files, and when i took it out and tried to reboot my computer all that happens is a black screen comes up with a flashing white line....anyone know of a fix to get back to how it was before? F8 doesnt work.....That black screen with flashing white cursor usually means that no hard drive was found. I think maybe you need to go into the BIOS and get the hard disk recognised - it looks like something got reset when you added or removed the old hard drive. You did turn the power off when you did all the connecting and disconnecting?

So reboot and try to access the BIOS with, DEL or ESC or F2 or F1. At this point you might be able to discern whether the BIOS has lost the hard drive settings and simply can not see the drive or if there is another issue. If there is a "Load Default Settings" item then you COULD try that.

I'd just double check the jumpers on the HDD, and make sure the connection is ok (unplug and re-plug it).

Then if it doesn't boot automatically, have a look in your BIOS (Press __ to enter Setup), and have a look at the boot sequence...or if the Press __ for boot menu, is available, try to find it on the list.

If you're still having problems, come back.the hard drive is showing up in bios and yes i turned it off and unplugged it before i messed around inside.....i did the load default settings and it did nothing.....XP isnot the original os on the computer it originally had Milenium.....so noones got anything? This other hard drive when you put it in did you start an operating system that was on it?? like you left the xp drive plugged in to copy files to it and the ONE you put in, did you start up whatever operating system was on it?? If so that's probably why. I've had that happen to me a few times myself.. XP is RELALY weird like that.. if you have xp and STICK another drive in with say 95, 98, or ME on it and boot it, it does something to your xp drive.. If that's exactly what you did, then you probably need to reinstall xp. You can probably just do a REPAIR. I don't remember the codes to do it but if you feel like doing some googling, look up how to use the recovery console to reinstall all the boot files. I don't remember what they are. :-( sorry but that'll save you from losing anything and anything getting messed up/apps not working, and drivers missing things like that. Give it a shot! it can't hurt since you won't lose anything doing it that way.. IF YOU DO do the repair, it will still do what I said but you'll have to redo your drivers most likely and reinstall some programs like antiviruses becase they wil be corrupt. Good luck. :-)

Jay

Boot to your XP CD and at the first prompt hit R for repair...this will take you to the Recovery Console.
At the command prompt type fixmbr and hit Enter.
Remove the CD and re-boot.
If it does not take you into Windows REPEAT the above procedure and at the command prompt type fixboot and hit Enter and do the same...

Let us know.ummmm.......i kinda sorta lost my xp disk......hahaha....uhhhh.....anyway to work around it?We've actually heard this before...
DLoad the emergency XP boot disks...6 i think from the MS website and create the floppies...boot to them and you can run the Recovery Console from there...

would appreciate any suggestions...I must have screwed it up royally somehow...last time I had it running RIGHT must have been in 2006 or maybe 2005??? Why are you still using Windows 98?http://www.easydesksoftware.com/news/news10.htm

reinstall windows 98 will be the best solution for meYou must have your w98 CD and the product key. If there is no valuable data on it, a format and reinstallation is the best way to go. If there is any data you want to keep, there are other ways. The reason for reinstalling is that VMM32.vxd is a file created by windows during installation. It is a compiled file consisting of many .vxd's.no I NEVER had a windows 98 CD...the only thing that came with it was a system / application recovery CD's...the system does not recognize that I have a cdrom either...so anything that requires the CDrom to install something won't help me...the
best I can do is work in DOS...which is not much. I would start checking with friends/co-workers etc. to see if anyone has a CD you could borrow. The repairs needed will require a CD as 2KD suggested.
There is a non-destructive re-install method for Win98 if yoj have basic DOS skills...
Let us know.even if I could find a 98CD, I could not install it as my system doesn't "see" the cdrom
on my computer...and yes I have basic DOS skills...sure would be great if I could do a fix through DOS...cause thats all I get when I start it up.Quote from: shmokey on November 05, 2007, 08:20:23 PM

Still only 16 colors.In Device Manager do you have "Other devices" entry?In Device Manager, I do not see an Other devices entry.

Yellow circle exclamation POINT next to Intel 82845G/GL/etc Graphics Controller.
Then you have to download a new driver from a link provided by Calum:

after Windows restarted, still same PROBLEM. I get a popup that says there is a problem with graphics and prompts me to start Add New Hardware part of Control Panel. In that case, it looks to me, that your on-board graphic chip is damaged.
You may NEED to get video card (not that expensive).

I tried a bunch of other variations and got the same message or "File not found"

So, I'm not sure I'm following 2k_dummy and Willy W's responses. I guess I'm in over my head.

I noticed there's been ALOT of other posts since this one, so you may not get back to read this...but if you do, I think I'm giving up for the moment. I'm trying to get a copy of the installation disk and if I do will post back with that...

You have to add "cd" command in front of them:

cd c:\windows\command

for instanceDo you have a floppy drive? Do you have an EBD (EMERGENCY boot disk)? An EBD can be made from inside windows or downloaded from bootdisk.com. You will need to know the names of the missing or corrupted files and their proper locations. Boot from the floppy and select the option command prompt only. At the command prompt type sys c:. Afterwards type ext. Answer the questions about the file name and location. This should allow you to extract practically any file that is contained in the CAB files. Don't forget to press after each command. This should get you up and running in a matter of a few minutes.

I think that's your problem.

Perhaps somebody else will be along and post here, to explain the proper way to determine the right settings. There PROBABLY is a right way to go about it, based on the specs of your monitor and video card.

I too have and use Win98. Its an older computer.

Me... I'd make note of those current settings.
Then I'd experiment.
When I got it where I liked it, I'd note that too.

For what it is worth, I use High Color 16 bit and 800x600 .

If there have been no modifications made to the computer - in other words, it uses the same video card that it was manufactured with - and you post the model number to identify your computer, then perhaps someone here might be able to help you find the proper settings.

If you decide to experiment with those settings, post back and let us know your results.

Sounds like you just need to adjust your screen resolution and colors now.

I can't say for sure what you should use, because I don't know how old your computer is or what the video card is capable of. You can try 800x600 or 1024x768, and 16-bit or 32-bit color. That should get you back to the way it looked before. If you can't choose any of these options in the video settings, then your video driver needs to be reinstalled or you're still in safe mode for some reason.First, try the resolution and color depth settings. If the screen is to large to see or access the apply button, simply press the A key. If this doesn't work, Boot to command prompt only (depress and hold the ctrl button while booting). At command prompt, type scanreg/fix and press enter. Afterward, a reboot will be required, but try to boot into normal mode. Sometimes it will try to stay at the low resolution but it should change easily in normal mode. There are a couple of things more that can be tried, but this should get you started.The next two settings in Win98 are High color and True color...
Try True color first. If your vid card is strong enough it will look fine...if it doesn't back it off to High color.

P>S> Remember in Win98 you have to reboot each time for the changes to take effect...Howdy. i've tried everything suggested above and i still have the ugly safe mode look. new settings do not hold after a reboot. i think that FILE backup windows had me do, did me in. In Win98, there's a "Apply changes without restarting" option. In most cases, applying resolution or color changes in Win98 does not require a restart."In Win98, there's a "Apply changes without restarting" option."

Good to hear, glad to help.

Keep that in mind, too. One of the most common causes of hardware not acting as it should are drivers. While it isn't necessary to update drivers unless something acts up, it's always a good idea to check for updated ones and see what changes they may have made to the driver. It's also the first place you should look should something that was working normally before stop functioning properly.

I'm sorry I didn't reply back sooner, year end is approaching and I've been working overtime. I TRIED running the scanreg/restore from DOS but that didn't work. After Thanksgiving, the other thing that was odd was my LG monitor, which is only about a year old, won't work on my old Dell or my newer HP. It won't power up at all. Might that have something to do with it? I'm at a loss...1. Check Disk. Typographic error - It's not "chkdks", it's "chkdsk".

2. Scan Disk. The best utility to verify the integrity of a FAT32 file system (supporting long file names, not just "8.3" name format) as well as the disk surface it occupies under MS-DOS or a Win9x/ME operating system is "scandisk" not "chkdsk". You might have to check its command options to determine how you want to run it. Access "help" via "scandisk /?".

3. From the following unauthoritative link:

http://www.jpsdomain.org/windows/winvoodoo.html

Quote
Run ScanDisk and/or Chkdsk

Do this after using the boot disk.

ScanDisk and Chkdsk (Check Disk) perform more or less the same function. The difference is that Chkdsk is the old, DOS, command line tool, which does not really know about long file names. ScanDisk is the more modern graphical tool that can deal with a few more problems than Chkdsk. There is also command line (non GUI) version of ScanDisk.
Non-GUI

1. Boot to "DOS".
2. Type "scandisk" and let it run.
3. Reboot when finished.

GUI

1. Double-Click on "My Computer".
2. Right-Click on the C: drive.
3. Choose "Properties".
4. Find the "Tools" tab and choose it.
5. Click on the "Check Now" button.
When I type in scandisk I get a new window saying "Scandisk is unable to check drive because there is no extended memory driver loaded on your computer" Plus a whole bunch of other error message. Is this what you meant by saying I may have to check its command options? Do you need the rest of the error message?1. Error Message. No, I don't need the rest of the error messages at this time. That error message has nothing to do with the scandisk command options. At any rate it's not NORMAL. This error message as well as your previous references to "bad command" or "bad filename" indicate missing system files or a "bad" environment after boot. If you're starting from a "working" Windows 98SE boot disk (floppy or CD), you shouldn't have any of these problems. They setup a "working" environment and you should be able to EXECUTE the basic programs from the boot floppy or CD.

2. Boot Device and Media. What I need to know is, what operating system and media are you booting from?

a. Are you starting from a Windows 98SE boot disk (floppy)?

b. Are you starting from a Windows 98SE boot disk (CD)?

c. Are you starting from the Windows 98SE setup CD? Not really the same thing as the "boot CD". I know, it's confusing.

d. Are you starting from suspect hard drive containing your Windows 98SE operating system (with missing files)?

3. Goal. What is your immediate goal? If saving your data files is the most important thing, you shouldn't be using the hard drive in the current environment. If your startup problems have been caused by a hardware problem, you could damage the file system and/or data files within it. As "patio" and "WillyW" have asserted, it would be best to recover the hard drive's data from a "working" computer system first, then fix the problem child.

If on the other hand, you're trying to recover the data in-place, you should be starting from a "working" boot disk. It doesn't sound like you are.Be very careful running scanreg/restore - in my probably screwed up system it doesn't matter what date you pick it restores to the original w98se install - in other words all settings, all drivers and most of the installed programs are lost.
Why not download Seagate's hd test program for DOS and find out what, if anything, is wrong with the hd - just be careful not to run the portion that wipes out info - it won't let you unless you type in a definite request.
If the system will not read the downloaded zip floppy this can be done on another computer with the hd attached as a slave - with the hd slaved should it not be possible to access the files on the drive by-passing windows?Oh yeah, forgot - you have to find the zip file on the downloaded Seagate floppy and unzip it and then go into the BIOS and change the boot sequence to 'floppy' from ID before it will run!You are all going down the wrong road, except Patio. Fixing Windows is not the most important thing at this point. Backing up the important data is. Slaving that hard drive to a functional one is the FIRST step, not the second or third. Thank you GX1_Man. So if I slave my C: drive into my newer HP and the HP doesn't have Microsoft Word, but some other "pseudo" Word type program, can I still drag all of my legal documents over to the HP? Or will it make a difference if I just drag all of it over to my external drive? That's where I would like to store them. My parents had a situation similar to this where they couldn't open Word docs because they had Microsoft Works or something like that. Input please ?I would definitely just copy the files over to the external then for now. If that machine has a CD or DVD burner I would also put the entire collection on an optical disk as well. It does not matter what version of word is on a machine. A file is a file.

Be sure and use the Copy command and NOT the Move command. If something bad happens in the transfer you will not have deleted the originals in the process.

Make sure your hard drive jumper settings are correct and that the drive is seen correctly in the BIOS screen before you start trying this. If this is not the case, let us know. Make sure your hard drive jumper settings are correct and that the drive is seen correctly in the BIOS screen before you start trying this. If this is not the case, let us know.

I don't know what it means when you said, "...make sure that the drive is seen correctly in the BIOS screen before you start trying this." My HP is less than a year old, I'd prefer to have at least one computer running, so I'm sorry if this is a dumb question. Also, in looking at some other forums about slaving a drive, some comments said to have to power off and some said you can leave it connected. Why would you want the power connected? Always UNPLUG the computer from the wall BEFORE doing any work inside.

After you set the jumpers to slave on the old drive and connect it (You do not have to mount it in the chassis. Just connect the power and data cable.)

Plug in the computer and restart the machine, but press the key to enter the BIOS. I think HP uses F2. You will see a screen you have never seen before which will show you how much memory is installed, what hard drives, etc. Do not change anything but see if 2 hard drives are listed. If so, press escape and exit out and loet your machine restart normally.

If any problems, post back. As a matter of fact, post back in any case. We like success stories.

Solve : Win 98 help(cleaned HD and cannot re-install)?

Answer»

I can only get to the prompt screen. It stops @ A:\ I don`t know where to go from here.
I`ve tried just about everything I know, which isn`t much really. I rebooted pc w/floppy disk for win 98 and thats as far as I can get. I wanted to wipe the pc clean and start over. I don`t need any of the OLD programs I had on it and there were some other things I couldn`t get rid of. I first tried E-Z Recovery and it pretty much messed it up. I was ABLE to get to an illegal thing and couldn`t go anymore so I decided to wipe the pc clean. Now I`m stuck. Any help is greatly appreciated. I want to give my niece the pc since her old one crapped out. It is basically going to be used for school and games and NO INTERNET. Just want to see if I can get the pc back to a regular state with nothing on it. I can add programs later.Welcome to the CH forums.

1. Boot from a Windows 98 boot floppy. If you do not have one, see http://www.bootdisk.com
2. Run fdisk. Using fdisk, remove all partitions from the drive, and create new ones as needed.
3. At the A:\> prompt type Format C: and hit Enter. The hdd will now be formatted.
4. On completion of Step 3. insert the Win 98 cd into the drive and at the A:\> prompt type R:\setup (where R: is the drive letter of your cdrom, you will have to DETERMINE which it is) and hit Enter. FOLLOW the on-screen prompts to install Win 98.

Step 2. can be omitted if you do not want to alter the partitions.

You will need your Win 98 Product Code, drivers as necessary and other software.

Good luck

Solve : Win95 installed, trouble booting up?

Answer»

I installed Windows 95 alongside Vista on my 2 GB RAM laptop, and am having a bit of trouble getting it to start. I'll start with the most basic problems:

1. Right now when I choose Win95 from the Vista bootloader (I've set it up, it works OK with MS-DOS), I get an error "Non-system disk or disk error". Only I don't have a floppy drive, and I don't have anything in the CD drive. I would think it's my mouse or headphones, but DOS 6.22 and MS-WIN 3.11 started fine with them connected, and this still occurs with no peripherals connected.

Probably on a SIMILAR problem, when I tried to install Windows 98, I got to 61% of the second step when it said "Please insert a diskette into drive B:" along the top of the screen and wouldn't let me CONTINUE. Not only do I not have a diskette drive, I don't have a "B:" drive, either.

2. Before the above error, I kept getting "Insufficient memory to initialize Windows" errors. I added

Code: [Select]MinFileCache=32768
MaxFileCache=32768
to SYSTEM.INI, after reading Win95 sometimes has trouble with more than 48 MB of memory, but b/c of problem #1 am not yet sure this has fixed it. I'll need about 384 MB eventually as well, hopefully I'll be able to get that.

3. Windows Protection Errors. But I think I need to solve #2 before this one.

The aforementioned "Please insert a diskette into drive B:" is keeping me from upgrading to Windows 98. I think it wants to make a Win98 boot disk when it says this, but I don't really know.

Windows 3.11 was working fine, except in Standard Mode instead of 386 Enhanced Mode. When I tried to setup the Internet, TRUMPET Windsock said I was using 75-80% of my memory - I definitely think it had memory issues, but perhaps was able to fit in 2 MB or 640KB.

Yeah, lots of problems. Had Win3.11 working, maybe I can get back to there and start from square 3 again.

Here's my Autoexec.bat:

Code: [Select]C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE /X
@ECHO OFF
PROMPT $p$g
set mouse=C:\Mouse2
C:\Mouse2\mouse.exe /Q
PATH C:\MOUSE2;C:\DOS;
SET TEMP=C:\DOS
LOADHIGH=C:\DOS\MSCDEX.exe /D:MSCD001

and Config.sys:

Code: [Select]DEVICE=C:\DOS\SETVER.EXE
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICEHIGH=C:\Dos\oakcdrom.sys /D:MSCD001
DOS=HIGH
FILES=30

MS-DOS was working before I tried the Win95/98 upgrade - somehow it now thinks I have a non-system disk in a floppy drive when I TRY to start it up

I found another problem.At "Device MANAGER" under "Display adapters" i see only "Standard PCI Graphics Adapters (VGA).When i click the properties options i see this notice : "This device is not working properly because IRQ Holder for PCI Steering is not working properly (Code 37) "
What does it mean ?Every ISSUE here points to the lack of motherboard drivers...do you have them for that laptop by chance ? ?No, i don't have any drivers. Do you know where i can find drivers for "Standard PCI Graphics Adapters (VGA)" ?You need the whole package of MBoard drivers for that MACHINE...visit the manufacturers site and check the Support section.
Make sure you specify Win98.I THING the problem is this IRQ Holder because i succeed to install some video drivers but always i get this massage in the properties window:"This device is not working properly because IRQ Holder for PCI Steering is not working properly (Code 31)".May be i must change some settings in BIOS but what exactly i don't know. All these symptoms are related to the lack of correct MBoard drivers.Just in case if i'm getting some IRQ conflict what can i do about that ?One more question because i think i made some basic mistake.The name of the laptop motherboard is Matsushita Electric Industrial Co.,Ltd. CF-27-2 and the mother board chipset is Intel 82440BX/ZX(that is from "everest") .To fix my display problems i must find drivers for this chipset Intel 82440BX/ZX. Am i right or wrong ?Correct.How to install correctly the chipset drivers because the chipset is not listed in Device Manager?
It's a an .exe file.Double clik it...are you confident it's the right one ? ?I tried this drivers http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=129&OSFullName=Windows*+98+SE⟨=eng&strOSs=18&submit=Go%21
(the second end third) but noting changed and i couldn't find any other drivers for 440 chipset family at Intel site. Is that a this drivers what i needed or i must look for some others ?If i loaded the correct chipset drivers what can be the other problems for the display problems.
This is the devices in Device Manager to which i have yellow mark:

for Windows video - Standard PCI Graphics Adaptor (VGA) and for PCI/AGP Video - NeoMagic NM2200 Magic Media256. I had downloaded this driver http://www.video-drivers.com/drivers/88/88088.htm
It was a an .rar file. I just uncompressed it but there was no .exe or setup file.I just COPY the folder to my hard disk and restart the computer but nothing happened.
How can i fix the problem with the 16 bit colors an this low resolution ?

I have to ask why the down-grade?

Hi,

The problem might be directly related with the fact that your system is out of date.
Hopefully, another member will be able to tell you an older codecs pack, but it might be impossible to find a codecs pack compatible with your operating system.

Patio:
He/She already has VLCI understand that Zylstra...the link is for Win98 users.Btw Zylstra, VLC doesn't use system codecs at all. It only uses its own internal codecs. That's why VLC is great for troubleshooting media player ISSUES. If it works in VLC but not in [insert name here] it's most LIKELY a codec issue.

I tried to do a Win 95 B upgrade to a Win 95 A computer and we had a popwer failure when it stated checking the system, now when I turn the computer on it goes to the 95 splash screen then goes to a C prompt. Then i can type win at the c prompt and it will boot. How do i correct this?Add 'win' to the end of the autoexec.bat

That... or upgrade to something newer Could you explain the how to in adding the WIN a little more. This comp has some programs on it that will only run on 95 and they have been LOST several moves ago.
ThanksIt's been a while, but I believe the Autoexec.bat file was located in C:\ for Windows 95.

Anyway, when you get to the prompt 'C:\>' type:

Code: [Select]edit autoexec.bat
In the file that opens, scroll down to the bottom of it and on a new line type:

Code: [Select]win
Save the file, RESTART your computer. Windows should now start automatically.I do that and I get a blue screen box that SAYS MS DOS PROMPT EDIT at the top,
and file, edit, search, view, options and help BELOW THAT AND A FLASHING CURSER in the blue screen. nothing else in it.95 and 98 didn't always create these files. When you go into Windows 95, search for the file. Chances are it doesn't exist.

If you create a new autoexec.bat in C:\ and just type 'win' in it, that should still fix your problem.a search in windows shows a autoexec.bat, I went back to the dos edit of autoexec.bat and clicked on the file tab and it comes up with the files, but not sure how to add the win to the end of the list, when i type it in it wants to go under the WELCOME.EXE INSTEAD of at the last of the pageWhile in Windows open autoexec.bat with Notepad, and add "win" (no quotes) line. Save, exit. Restart

I have an old Toshiba Satellite Pro 4300 running Win 98 and I would like to upgrade to Win 2000. On the laptop is a sticker saying "designed for win 2000 Pro".

I would like to format the hard drive and do a clean install. Is this a good move?

Also, apart from drivers is there any other (toshiba) software required? I know that some laptops come with all kinds of utilities pre-installed.

And any other words of ADVICE...yup, clean install are the best start but i hope you know when you state "FORMAT" you will lost everything so MAKE your backup, if you have any important data such as mp3's or else.

you can download the driver here
http://www.toshiba-europe.com/bv/computers/sns/index.aspOk Thanks.

So just because it is a laptop it doesn't NEED any special treatment?...upgrade PROCESS is the same as for a desktop?

Thanks for the driver siteQuote

Solve : Windows 98 computer?

Answer»

My old windows 98 computer cant run any programs. it says sumting bout it cant find winbg.exe (windows debugger) some one plz help me its anoying I DONT CARE IF I LOSE ALL MY SAVED FILES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

note dont have CDWith your computer, a disc should have been included for reinstalling the operating system, insert the disc and restart your computer. Run through the setup. You will loose any saved data on your hard drive. Without a CD this is near impossible to fix.

You could dload a Win98SE BOOTDISK with CDRom support from bootdisk.com and run chkdsk on that drive...
Use the file named above to create a bootable floppy.
Boot up with the floppy in.
At the A: prompt type chkdsk /r and hit Enter.

DO NOT interrupt it.
When it finishes remove the floppy and re-boot...you may get Lucky.From what i read, Windbg.exe is a Windows Debugger file, often downloaded by worms and TROJANS. It should not be needed to load Windows 98.

You might try restoring the registry, by getting to a command prompt. Try holding down the F8 key from the beginning of the boot process and choose command prompt, and then type scanreg /restore (notice the space before /) and then hit enter. Choose a date that preceded your problem. If you need a Windows 98 OS DISK, you could buy one on ebay for about $50.-, but make sure it has not been installed before and is sealed/legal. The Win debugger file is a system file created because there is a hardware/software conflict...
