Also try running a Windows Update on http://www.microsoft.com ... They sometimes have drivers for these things...

Please SOMEONE HELP me. I am so dumb at computers so please no ONE laugh at me. All I need to know is if it is POSSIBLE for me to move one program to one pc to another. I have Limewire with about 500 sogs on it and I want to put the whole program or ATLEAST my songs to my new laptop.Can someone please tell me how. What program is it? The only P2P way that actually works is Bit TorrentI'm using LimeWire. I made sure to reinstall it after changing my connection, so that shouldn't be a problem.

As for Bit Torrents...I tried downloading a 1.5 gig program, the torrent says it will take 200 hours to finish. There were 32 seeders and a lot of them were DSL'ers. So yeah, I'd rather download faster than 5kbps. Quote

Your local computer store will also have cleaning kits.  Whether or not these methods will remove pen, you'll have to see.A word of ADVICE... I don't know if this is the area to be posting this but...

While I was using windows my monitor and sound kept turning off (the monitor went into power save) the computer would still be running though. The only way to remedy would be to turn the computer off and on again. But now, when I turn the computer on, the monitor won't turn on at all! What can I do? I can't even GET into safe mode or anything like that. I don't think its a monitor or GRAPHICS card problem because the sound would go off as well. I don't know if it can be a virus because windows hasn't even booted up before the monitor doesn't come on. Help! What can I do?Begin by testing your monitor in the following manner:

unplug monitor from computer. get another monitor (borrow one if you have to) and another computer (borrow one if you have to) and follow these steps:

1) plug your monitor into the other computer.
2) plug the other monitor into your computer.
3) turn on both computers and both monitors.
4) Does your monitor work on the other machine? Does the other monitor work on your machine?

What do you mean about the power grid? It's just...plugged in...Can you please supply system info......monitor is....PC is a laptop/desktop/tower.make model..self built or shop puchase...operating system is?What ELSE is plugged in and how.

The tower is an Advent 3412 and the monitor is an LG 570LS.

The monitor, SPEAKERS and tower were all plugged into the same extension splitter thing but i moved the tower to a separate socket of its own and it still doesn't work...

Hello Everyone.       When i bought a new computer i sent  all my folders & files from my  old computer to a yahoo account , hoping  not to lose any information, so i could send  the folders & files back to my new computer, as it turn out  the  folders will not open, i can open the files but  not the folders.  Have i lost all the information in my folders  or is there a way  to open the folders either in my new  computer or at my yahoo account.

Scan for VIRUSES, Trojan Horses and Spyware. Clean your keyboard.No RAPTOR. Had it been me, I would have just used the on-screen keyboard, so it would make the message easier to read    Plus I have protection from such viruses, etc.

2. But it did find some registry keys (not sure if they are the correct words, but their icon was a turquoise colour) two days ago.  I wasn't happy about this and knew that was due to my son.  Spybot always says Congratulations, everything is ok (words to that effect).

A person using a PC sends me an e-mail (using Outlook) with an animated GIF (GIF89a) that is opened on my Mac (using Macintosh Mail). The GIF animation works as designed.

If the animated GIF is dragged and dropped onto the DESKTOP or into another Mail window, it does not animate. If it is dropped into a browser window THEN the animation does work as designed.

How are the HTML instructions to loop the series of GIF-stills to act as a "flip book animation" ACTUALLY working in a "mail DOCUMENT" ? [The nature of a browser is to follow HTML instructions. An e-mail document does not have that nature.]I THINK the Outlook default is to read html.
I set mine to plain text only for security reasons.
I'm unsure of MACS though.The Preferences has a "ON or OFF" selection that says:

"Display remote images in HTML messages.
Remote images require additional network access to display."

The "selection box" is checked ON.

What does the second line mean. Maybe that is the key.....

I'm using Outlook Express so things may well be different for you.  I can make animated GIFs with Photoshop (and Imageready) but I want to mail them to others like someone did to me. ("They" actually forwarded the GIF so "they" don't know how it works either.)

My parents have a brand new HP computer with windows XP on it and have a high speed cable modem.  They are constantly  getting adware and viruses even though I have installed a firewall and they use Macfee Virus PROTECTION provided by AOL.  I am not too familiar with what AOL provides. Can anyone give me some insight on the type of upkeep my parents should be doing in terms of patches and virus protection updates outside of scanning?  I feel like they are helpless and are always calling me at work to answer their computer problems when owning a computer shouldn't be this hard.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide. Tell them to keep their virus definitions up to date! Also, defrag regularly.I'm going to recommend three PIECES of software for your parents. There are many more out there, but if your parents are at all like mine then we want to keep things as simple as possible for them.

AVG Free is a virus guard, and should keep them safe. Once installed, it runs in the background at all times your PC is on.

Microsoft AntiSpyware guards against Spyware. No single program will catch all of it, but you can at least expect to keep the annoyances to a minimum. This program is the best going.

AdAware lets you quickly and easily san your PC for anything that gets through, and safely removes it for you. Have them run this at least once a week, and they should notice their problems decrease greatly.

Squirrel's comment can't be OVERSTATED: all of these programs must be updated regularly to remain relevant. Doing so is easy; they all give you the ability to connect to their sites anytime you want to download the most recent definitions. They can also be set to update automatically. Generally, once a week is all it takes.

I don't find any viruses but I do have to delete spyware from time to time.

I have a problem which may or may not have a computer based solution.  I hope this is the appropriate venue to raise it.

My home was constructed (or I should say re-constructed after a recent Hurricane) pre wired for computer, telephone and cable.  Speaker wires for a stereo system were run from the living room to all rooms for in-ceiling speakers.  HOWEVER, the rooms were not pre-wired for in room controls, which I would now like to add.

What I am LOOKING for is some type of control in each room that can operate through the existing wires to CONTOL the volume of speakers operated by speaker wire originating in the living room.  The home has a built in control panel from which Cat. 5e, Cat 6 and co axle wires run to each room.  Each room has available and unused for any current purpose at least 1 Cat 5e, 1 Cat 6, and 2 or 3 co axle wires.  From the control panel to the place in the living room where the stereo is located and where the speaker wire pairs run there is available and unused 2 Cat 5e, 2 Cat 6 and 3 co axle wires.

After I "surf" the net a few pages deep, it seems to hit the brakes. If I dump the TIFs & Cache, restart the net runs fine again for a few minutes. I have already expanded the memory what I could but the problem seems to persist only allowing me to surf further. Is there a "always clear the cache memory switch I am missing"? Already have checked the "empty TIF when browser closes" which I really doubt it does. Using XP & sadly AOL but occurs with explorer also...

I believe she said it started after AOL 9 was loaded. (Had other major problem I took CARE of but this one is a head scratcher errr hair puller outer).ok, well... Although 256 MB should cut it, you shoudl know that 256 MB is the recommended amount of RAm that you shuould have... That's not supposed to be too fast... I guess it's possible for it to happen with that much RAM... Also, does this only happen while using AOL? What was the problem before this?

My computer has been making a strange "bleep" sound (edit: since I posted this I found out that the name of the sound is windows xp information bar.wav) every FOUR to five
minutes for the past several days. It makes the sound whether or not I
am connected to the Internet, although I noticed while I was on dial up
connection that the NOISE did not start until after I had signed online
that DAY. Even after I signed off, however, the noise CONTINUED. Now I
am on a cable Internet connection, and it makes the noise every four to
five minutes after I turn the computer on. The screen saver will run
for approximately two minutes while I'm not using the computer, and then
when the computer makes the "bleep" sound, it returns to the regular
screen. My computer is set to go on standby after about 20 minutes or so,
and it will sometimes go to standby. The times it goes to standby are
the only time the "bleep" noise stops. I have run Adaware, run McAfee
virus scans, run AOL spyware detector, defragmented the computer, and
performed disk clean up multiple times since the noise started, and they
have not helped. What can I do???

Tell us more about this bleep sound. Tell us more about your SYSTEM specs.I'm really not much of a computer expert, so I don't know what "system specs" means, but I looked up in the control panel under the list of sounds, and it's the one called

windows xp information bar.wavOS? Processor type and speed? make and model of computer? RAM?

What do malware scans show?Ok, I don't know what all of that stuff is. I have a Dell Desktop Computer with a Pentium Processor--I think it's Pentium 3 or 4. I have no extra sound cards or video cards or AV Cards. The malware scans don't show much of anything--I have no viruses, and the spyware that is found is just the occasional low threat level stuff that normally appears.

Ok here's the deal, from the very first time i got my laptop, the screen will every so often decide to start flashing, usually in the colors of the background. However, lately, this will happen for quite SOMETIME. So i try shutting it down for a bit, and once i turn it back on, right after the windows sign in screen, it starts up again.  I have noticed though that if i push the screen all the way down it'll STOP.   This HAPPENS even when i'm not connected to the internet so i know it's within the computer and not because of a network.  Any ideas? I insert a blank CD into my E drive and then send jpeg and/or mpeg files to the E drive.  The "CD Wizard" appears and asks if I want to add said files to the disc.  I then click to start the recording process.  The process begins and will appear to be recording.  However, I get an error message saying that a "problem" was encountered and that the CD may no longer be USABLE.  Fine.  I restart the computer and make another attempt to record the files and it will then work.  Once that session is done, I will attempt to record additional files only to get the same message.

I have used Maxell and Hewlitt-Packard CD-Rs during this time.

I have also tried using Roxio CD Creator with no luck.  Each time I try, I get 2 error messages.  VERY frustrating, gang.  

Any ideas on THINGS to check?  I'm using a Gateway desktop with Windows XP.

tasky tasky........ "My newest problem has to do with CD burning" .....This suggests to me that possibly something else may be causing this ...........  Did your cd burner work ok prior to this issue ?   Which burning software are you using ?
What are the errors you get when ATTEMPTING to use ...... Roxio CD Creator ?

dl65  Hello dl65 - Yes, my CD burner has worked fine up until recently.  My computer came with Roxio CD Creator 5 installed.

I have done most of my CD burning throug the following procedure:  I would highlight the files I want to save and send them to my E drive.  At this point, I have the option of naming the CD and then starting the recording process.  This method has worked well up until now.  It seems as if the recording process begins, but then reaches a point where it stops and tells me that "An error has occured during the recording process.  Your CD may no longer be usable".  Occasionally, I'll restart my computer and retry using the same CD.  Sometimes I'm able to record some files and sometimes I 'll get the same error message.  I'm sure that the CD is not finalized.

The other method I can use is working thru the Roxio program.  When I try this, I get the following two messages:  "CD Error - Power Calibration Error" and "Track Writer Error - Command Retry Failed".

This has happened with CD media from Maxell, Hewlitt-Packard, and Imation.  I don't think that the blank CDs are the problem.

Any ideas?

My system is about 5 years old (Gateway).My latest efforts to figure out how to get my CD recorder going again has also failed.  I downloaded a patch from the Roxio website (or a link there of) that was SUPPOSED to fix CD Creator 5 Basic.  It didn't work.

Any others out there have any further ideas?

I have a compaq presario S3200NX, and am planning to do a full system recovery(restore the computer to the way it was at purchase). When i start the recovery process(i don't have discs, it is a F10 restore) it says a registry file is missing, in some system 32 folder. so, i guess there is nothing i can do about the F8 Restore now working? And I am just cleaning up, by the way. Basically  I will try and get my hands on an external CD burner so i can burn recovery discs, which would be an option but my internal is broke. What I am trying to do is password PROTECT a Files on USB FLASH drive.  

I have a program that comes with the device that can set a password on the device but requires SOFTWARE on ever computer I want to use the device on to unlock the USB drive.  

Does any one know of a program that can set a password for a usb key or a folder but not require any software to be INSTALLED to be able to unlock the drive or folder?
You could compress the contents to a password protected .ZIP file, then delete the originals.
Space would have to be a consideration.

 My old computer, an eMachines T1440 finally finished it's death throes after we moved. About a week before the move it started shutting off at random moments. Just tired, I guess. I just received a much needed replacement machine (Dell Dim. 9100, Pent 4, 3.0 gHz) this week.
 I connected my old harddrive (SEAGATE 40 GB, IDE connector) to the new machine. I was able to transfer most of what I wanted, but could not access any of the files that were in my 'documents and settings' folder, including all of my music. I know I can get it again through downloads, etc, but it represents about 48 hours of time I don't have. Also, I threw out many of my older cds before the move since I had the music in the computer. I'm also unable to retrieve any of my document files. What can I do? Quote

Also be CERTAIN that you have the correct drivers at hand.remove all you have installed for this Multi, I am fairly SURE that the drivers cd etc should  have ab uninstallation tool on it but if not USE the windows "add remove hardware" and "add remove software" go into the control panel/system/hardware/ and remove any items refering to the Multi.
disconnect the Multi
then reinstall before connecting the Multi to the computer

A neighbor asked me to reload Win95 on their CTX EZBook 700 nodebook.  
I was able to reformat the harddrive but had to purchase a floppy SINCE the notebook did not come one (found one on eBay).  
Using the floppy I was able to reload DOS but I'm having problems with the harddrive being lost from the configurations.  
The notebook is using a PhoenixBIOS 4.05.C19.  By changing the BIOS settings and removing the floppy from the BIOS, I can get the harddrive located again.  Same appears to happen when I try to add the CD ROM.  

Does anyone have any notes as to how the BIOS works or does anyone have a similar notebook and can relay their settings.  Once the HARD Disk Drive is reformatted, you will have to insert the boot diskette to use the CD-ROM drive.

Set the FIRST boot device to A:Thanks for the reply.  I guess I misstated.  The PROBLEM that I'm having is setting to BIOS to consistently read the harddrive and CDROM.   If I tell the BIOS that a harddrive and CDROM is present, upon reboot, the harddrive fails.  If I disable the CDROM in BIOS and reboot, the notebook comes up but I cannot select the CDROM.  
I've like to know how this BIOS works, or get the BIOS configuration of a similar computer.

Note - originally, the notebook did not come with a floppy.  Once I BOUGHT one, I had to configure it in the BIOS before it could be used.   The problem may have started then.

hi... i have a problem to enter my pc  BIOS.
my spec:

Acer
Pentium 3 450 mhz
Motherboard acer V66m (98121-2) ( 48.38A 01.021)
OS win98

system asking me to push Ctrl+Alt+Esc to enter bios setup, but it not working when i did this. It CONTINUES running win98. I also try F10, F2 button but fail too. I try to change the motherboard batery (pc technician's idea), its still not working.
anyone can help me please.....any idea???

Try pressing the keys all at once and rapidly repeat the handling. It will only work when the message it displayed, so as soon as your turn on the computer, keep tapping these BUTTONS.

The Windows 98SE CD is a bootable CD as well. So you have two good chances.Iam realy new about pc. I only know one way to make clean install is enter bios setup bootable priority restart pc and bla...bla....

I shut down the computer and a few hours later I tried to get back on but it wont let me get past the sing in screen. I put the password in and it seems like it'll load but all it does is show our background picture. You can move the mouse but nothing else works. All it ever shows is the background picture everytime.  Any guesses?Can you start in safe mode?My mother has tried that. I don't believe it workedIt doesn't matter if it works or not, it's only a way of finding out if the problem is caused by windows or by another program/virus/driver/etc.

You had best see yourself to verify that you can not enter safe mode.A bit more background on this. The last function done was a windows update.  It hasn't started since.  I can get it to the beginning window on the safe mode, but it never loads programs after that.  When you do the Alt&GT;Contrl>Delete  there are no programs running.  It will do a scan disk (because of the shut off) but after that, nothing.Safe mode can take a very long time to load so give it plenty before you decide it's done.
Can you hit Ctrl+Alt+Del in safe mode and perhaps start a new task... explorer.exe?

It just sits.  I can do this in either the safe mode, or regular.  There is no task manager to access, no icons to click on.. nothing.  If I do the control/alt/delete  the window pops up, and there are no programs to shut down, the box is empty.  thanks for all the helpful suggestions, keep them coming.Yes, The last thing we did before it crashed was do a Windows Update.
