I shut down the computer and a few hours later I tried to get back on but it wont let me get past the sing in screen. I put the password in and it seems like it'll load but all it does is show our background picture. You can move the mouse but nothing else works. All it ever shows is the background picture everytime.  Any guesses?Can you start in safe mode?My mother has tried that. I don't believe it workedIt doesn't matter if it works or not, it's only a way of finding out if the problem is caused by windows or by another program/virus/driver/etc.

btw Kadra, safe mode will take some time to load and shutdown, be patient.Great, thanks for the INFO, I'll try it again tomorrow.Moms and computers.. You had best see yourself to verify that you can not enter safe mode.A bit more background on this. The last function done was a windows update.  It hasn't started since.  I can get it to the beginning window on the safe mode, but it never loads programs after that.  When you do the Alt>Contrl>Delete  there are no programs running.  It will do a scan disk (because of the shut off) but after that, nothing.Safe mode can take a very long time to load so give it plenty before you decide it's done.
Can you hit Ctrl+Alt+Del in safe mode and perhaps start a new task... explorer.exe?
I'll be interested to hear the result.

ROFL  if I KNEW how to do a new task while I'm still waiting for it to load anything, I probably wouldn't be here.  Oh, btw, how much time is concidered enough?  It's been roughly an hour now, the screen saver doesn't even come on. I guess I haven't explained what it happening clearly enough.  SO  here's the progression:  Push the on button, 'puter runs thru checking for the mouse, etc., Screen for Windows ME pops up, more computer check, Password screen pop up, enter password............ then nothing. It just sits.  I can do this in either the safe mode, or regular.  There is no task manager to access, no icons to click on.. nothing.  If I do the control/alt/delete  the window pops up, and there are no programs to shut down, the box is empty.  thanks for all the helpful suggestions, keep them coming.Yes, The last thing we did before it crashed was do a Windows Update.
