Solve : A crashing / self rebooting new computer..LONG?

Answer»

Greetings all!

I, last weekend, purchased some new parts to upgrade my computer.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4600+ 2.4 GHz

Corsair Value Select Dual Channel 1024MB PC4200 DDR2 Memory (2 x 512MB)

Asus M2N-SLI-Deluxe NVIDIA Socket AM2 ATX Motherboard / Audio / PCI Express / SLI Ready / Dual Gigabit LAN / S/PDIF / USB 2.0 & Firewire / Serial ATA / RAID

Western Digital / Caviar SE / 160GB / 7200 / 8MB / SATA-300 / OEM / Hard Drive

PNY Verto GeForce 7600 GS / 256MB GDDR2 / SLI / PCI Express / DVI / VGA / HDTV / Video Card

I installed everything, loaded windows onto the HD.  Everything was going great.  I created my PPPoE connection to my DSL provider, dragged it to the Startup option so it would launch when windows started.  Rebooted the machine after installing some drivers.  The DSL dialed automatically, but took forever and a day to launch.  I removed the shortcut from the start up.  I updated windows including IE7  and reboot.  When windows starts up it launches my DSL dialer, even after removing it, IE7 isi installed and launches....crash and comp reboots itself.

The computer rebooted got to the windows xp splash screen and rebooted again....this happened about 3 times in a row.

Then I got the missing or corrupt file C:\Windows\...config message.  I tried to go into safe mode, and was unsuccesful, when it went to load the splash screen it rebooted.

Finally, I decided to just wipe it and reinstall, as there wasnt too much time invested.

I go into the windows setup and delete the partition and set it to format and install.

It goes through the cycle and returns an error saying it cannot format the partition.

I reboot.

format and install again.  This time it hangs at the 100% complete when formatting and never progresses past that point.

Shut down and go to sleep.

Next day:  boot up the machine and perform windows instal succesfully, no problems.

Do updates and IE7 again.  Launch the internet.......comp reboots itself.

I figure its gotta be IE7 so I go into safe mode and remove it.

restart machine, log in normally.  Everything is working fine.  I load up a game, go to download the update....comp reboots.

Loads normally

I look in the Even viewer and find....Hanging application iexplore.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I decide to wipe and RINSE and repeat installation.

The comp continually and randomly reboots itself.  I have COPIED the error log:

Solve : svchost.exe CPU Spike!?

Answer»

I have four Dell Latitidue D610s that are all exhibiting the same problem. At startup a svchost.exe is spiking the CPU at 100% for 10+ minutes. Occassionally, it will spike the CPU at random intervals. I've used Process Explorer to determine the following services are running under this svchost.exe:

Automatic Updates
Background Intelligent Transfer Service
COM+ Event System
Computer Browser
Cryptographic Services
DHCP Client
Distributed Link Tracking Client
Help and Support
Logical Disk Manager
Network Connections
Network Location Awareness (NLA)
Remote Access Connection Manager
Secondary Logon
Seucurity Center
Server
Shell Hardware Detection
System Event Notification
System Restore Service
Task Scheduler
Telephony
Themes
Windows Audio
Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
Windos Management Instrumentation
Windows Time
Wireless Zero Configuration
Workstation

Any help to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.By the way, I have run virus software and spy ware detection software already to no avail. I even defragged the hard drive with no luck.

- Schwim3x6As you seem to be aware, you are seeing the multitude of Services running under scvhost.
On my Latitude I get multiple INSTANCES of svchost each running a few services.  If you've
played with Services (a great temptation, I KNOW) you may wish to reset them to XP default:
   http://www.tweakhound.com/xp/xptweaks/supertweaks6.htm

After that, begin by stopping them one at a time to discover what changes (if any) result.
For openers it is unlikely that you need the Indexing Service, for example.  If you are not using
a wireless system, that one can go too.  Some of these Services with relatively arcane names ARE
necessary to proper function of XP as we know it, so just go step by step.
When in doubt, set the Service to "Manual."  That way XP can start it if it needs it, but it won't
start automatically at boot.

Search out "Black Viper"  for indepth Services information.

Sysinternals offers a very useful Process Explorer that will display the running services of each svchost with a mouse over.

Good Luck--1101docThe Black Viper reference list for services is hosted at majorgeeks site if you need it... Quote

...
Fantastic post from a newb.  Thumbs up!It certainly shows that a Poster's designation (newbie) is no reflection of his knowledge.

Black Viper has almost disappeared from the net so Patio's advice should be heeded, Googling may be disappointing for this one.Problem solved!!!

I was using Process Explorer and was able to edit the Difference Highlight Duration which allowed me to see the file names that were highlighting in red. I noticed a particular file that was REPEATEDLY red. It was corp_sdis.pbk located in

\Profiles\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Connections\Pbk

I have no idea what this file was for so I deleted the entire Pbk FOLDER (I backed it up first). After restart, the Pbk folder is back, but the file is gone and so is my problem!

My situation may be very unique, but perhaps someone else may find my SOLUTION useful. Thanks for everyone's 2¢.

Solve : Weird question: de-magnetize a harddrive.?

Answer»

Hi Neil,

A. Why are you worried about him getting the data?

B. Why does he want it back?

I am not worrying about it but my new boss is. The old boss was fired under a very bad term. Even tho the hd is electronically demaged, the data are still intact and RECOVERABLE, if the old boss takes it to a cleanroom facility.  The harddrive contains sensitive client data of the law firm, he's concern the guy may do something bad with the data.

B.   Quote

The old boss was fired under a very bad term.
That, in itself, is reason enough to make certain the drive is totally destroyed. Don't give it to him under any circumstances.Magnet, then water OR delete all the partitions and install Linux on it with a different files system.why not go for the jonny neumonic and give up PART of your brain for your own hdd... then they got to cut your HEAD off to even get acess to it... well, that's one solution, if he doesn't mind doing ctrl-F manually every daywell I haven't got it yet, is the information the same everyday or is it different, what kind of data is it, it could be any data there is. So I guess whit the information he gave is the CTRL+F would be the best as far I know, without any more information on what exactly he want.  for one thing, he did say "How could a make a search automaticaly every day ". Code: [Select]echo off
TYPE "%1" | find "70034" >> .\newtext.txt

drag the text file over the batch file. each text file you drag over it will add the line with "70034" to the end. well, any lines, actually.

(other posters: I used type and stdin piping instead of explicitly giving find a filename so that find doesn't show the filename as the first line of it's output)use findstr and put a "^" to be more specific about where you want to find "70034".
Code: [Select]C:\test>findstr "^70034" file > newfile
tnx all of you

Solve : I need to clean install my XP?

Answer»

My stupid friend put a virus on my step dads computer. Upon running a bad virus clean and a bunch of other stuff, everything useful is gone, including network settings. They are COMPLETELY dumb for not coming to me. But anyway, he got a new computer and he's giving this one away. He wants this formatted I guess but the HP Recover data is gone. Is there anyway to get it back, or what? I would prefer not to burn a CD but if its the only option I will get on the new computer to do it.

Thanx.

And I would like advice very quickly please, I have a christmas party in a couple hours and the computer is my cousins christmas gift for tomorrow.Clean Install of XP...It keeps mentioning XP CD... Is this the actual CD to install XP? I'm relatively sure we don't have one of those. The computers came with it preloaded and all the recovery stuff comes on a seperate partition anymore...You need to borrow an XP CD if the Recovery partition is gone...
It has to match the installed version.

Or order 1 from HP...obviously this won't happen in time for Christmas.Yeah this probably isn't GOING to work then is what you're saying. Because there's no way ANYONE around here has a XP Professional disc just laying around, and even if they did I live too far away to pick it up and they wouldn't know what it is anyway. And everyone around here probably has HP so their recovery stuff is on a partition as well... Quote from: GAMERX365 on December 24, 2009, 10:11:55 AM

He wants this formatted I guess but the HP Recover data is gone. Is there anyway to get it back, or what? I would prefer not to burn a CD but if its the only option I will get on the new computer to do it.

The proper restore/recovery procedures for that computer model should be on the HP website support pages.

Not sure what "HP Recover data is gone" means.  Normally it is on a separate (possibly hidden) partition.  If deleted, has the space been reallocated to a new partition?

If the partition was deleted, but the space has not been reallocated to a new partition, you might try partition recovery software.  You'd be pretty much on your own, but with some luck and a heavy investment of time; you might pull it off.  There's a learning curve, so we're talking days or weeks here.

See http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk.

The practical solution would be to either order the restore/recovery discs from HP or find a suitable Windows XP SETUP CD.

It seems that you do have access to the Internet, or you are using another computer to COMMUNICATE with US here. Just in case you're not sure how the F8 function works, here is a video below that to makes it super easy:
http://www.videojug.com/film/how-to-boot-your-pc-into-safe-mode
On the the Microsoft website:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315222
do you understand how to get into your computer's basic setup? This is called the BIOS.
By the way, we STILL need to know the MODEL or type of computer you have and which Windows operating system you are using.

Note to moderator. This is not a poll, it should be sent to the hardware or software area as a problem to be solved

Hint:  Always post the "exact" error message text and/or numbers you're referring to.  You haven't communicated until the other party understands what you meant.  Words matter.  --dahlarbear

Solve : Put XP on Vista Laptop?

Answer»

Why all Vista users should upgrade to Windows XP
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13506_3-9837180-17.html

The link above is now two years old
. So for the PAST two years people been trying to do this. Myself, I think it's a bunch of bunk. Many laptops were designed by the manufacturer to run only with Vista. They did not have a downgrade plan to Windows XP. Yes, some did. Some did not. Now then, if you were in the latter category, it is a real uphill climb to try to find a WAY to go down to Windows XP.
Well, that's my opinion anyway.

So, here's a question.
What really is the right way to put Windows XP...
on a laptop that came with Vista?

first of all, does XP support all the hardware that Vista laptops come with?

I would think most hardware would work with XP but do manufacturers make XP compatible drivers for them when it's a vista laptop you're talking about....I had no problem with mine, but there weren't any XP drivers on the toshiba site. I had to go to the individual manufacturers sites.

Of course I then never really used the XP 32-bit or x64 installations, because it appeared they had some issues with power management, namely, returning from sleep the CPU remained running at 16-mhz, rather then 2.00Ghz, which caused a "bit" a slow-down (you know, standard STUFF, takes half an hour to SHOW start menu, etc...). I could probably fix this by simply disabling ALL power management options, but that wouldn't be good for battery life, now would it?

from the site
Quote

Now, as you may be aware, Vista is, well, crap. Sure, SP1 is on the way early next year and the hope is still there that Microsoft may be able to turn it around, but let's face it -- the chances of Vista BECOMING a wanted OS are dwindling by the minute.

This has never been true. Again, I doubt the author had even used Vista before making this claim. I'm not even defending Microsoft, I'm just saying that big handwavy generalizations made from a position of deep ignorance is one of the biggest wastes of time on the net today.

Windows Vista is definitely not crap. When working, it's fine and all....

How well does Windows 7 perform over Windows Vista? well, that's what my laptop is running now, personally, I don't see a huge difference, aside from the neat UI features regarding window management; definitely no worse then Vista, though; and it could easily be faster, I just don't reboot my machines very often. I think the main factor is the Vista Install I had on my laptop was an actual clean install, not the crapware infested install Manufacturers seem to think everybody should have.

Solve : Malware/Virus/Trojan? Issues...?

Answer»

I tried the FAQ and the search engine, found similar problems, but unfortunately no resolutions. I'm using a Acer Aspire One  w/ 1gb of ram and an Intel Atom 1.6ghz RUNNING Windows XP.

It started yesterday when my desktop background was changed with a box that said "Your system is infected". In my taskbar tray their is now a red circle with a white x that I'm unable to interact with, every few minutes a balloon appears from the icon WANTING me to purchase an Internet Security program to fix the problem. I've tried using Avast and McAfee, but I have very little knowledge regarding such issues. Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Solve : image previews of files inside of folders?

Answer»

On my COMPUTER which runs Windows 2000 I can see image previews of HTML files that are inside of folders both when the items in the folder are displayed in thumbnail view and also if I click on any individual file it will display an image preview of the document on the left SIDE of the folder.

However, I don't have this on my computer which runs Windows XP. That feature was a helpful feature to me. Is there any way I can GET the computer to display image previews of HTML files inside of the folders on Windows XP? It already will display previews of image files (ie: JPG, GIF etc) but not for other types of files.

Thanks!try this  do steps 1, 3 and 5

Solve : Slow Startup due to Firewall not Running Message?

Answer»

Every TIME l boot ye olde system up and it gets to the desktop display, the AVAST AV icon whirrs away (as it should) and then it stops for what seems like ages (but not REALLY in computing terms). Then a box is displayed to say that there is no FIREWALL running.
I seem to recall a previous thread from way back saying that this isn't a problem, but for me, it is really *censored* annoying as l know the Windows Firewall is totally ok.
Is there a way of getting rid of this message as it holds up the startup, or do l just have to live with it?
Thanks can u get into safe mode if so try this

press the windows key and R and enter chkdsk /r /f and press enter then press y for yes if asked to run on reboot

then defragment your computer in safe mode and restart and let chkdsk run then try it1) Why boot to safe mode?
2) I doubt that checkdisk has anything to do with anything
3) The CORRECT way to run checkdisk with XP is to boot to the Recovery Console and run chkdsk /r

4) In unlovedwarrior's signature there are a number of programs listed which either are essentially obsolete or useless (spybot, adaware) or have nothing to do with spyware (ccleaner). And AVG is certainly not the best free av to suggest.

5) OP - I'd suggest uninstalling and reinstalling the latest version of Avast.Hey, thank you both for taking the trouble to answer, and sorry for the delay in replying.
Followed your instructions unlovedwarrior, but it still came up with the box on the taskbar, upon startup, saying that "your computer may be at risk" there is no firewall active etc.etc.
At least l've done a defrag and a chkdsk which has cleaned up the odd item! As l said before, l usually just ignore this message, but it's just annoying.
Allan, that's interesting (5). Now, normally Avast automatically updates itself. I seem to recall that although it's a free program you have to update the login key each year. I've never had to do this yet, but l'm sure l've had this for over a year now. So l'll take your advice and uninstall/reinstall and see what happens. Will keep you posted.
Again, thank you both. What a blimmin' great site this is. I'm certainly getting to know more about the ins and outs of computers and it's good to know that you can post any kind of question and get a response from someone in the know!
Regards

Well Allan,
Deleted Avast and upon reboot the same box appeared, this time saying that there was no AV installed (so that pretty was obvious).
Reinstalled Avast, rebooted, and DIDN'T get the message regarding Firewall not operative.
Touch wood, all is now ok.
Thanks for your help.
RegardsYou're welcome. GLAD it's all sorted out.

Solve : Strange XP/IE 8 problem?

Answer»

I RECENTLY had an update a few weeks ago for IE 8 and some other updates. Ever since then, my computer ACTS LIKE (at start up) the this IE8 update just occurred. I see it loading some dll. files before going to my desktop and my start page is IE8 Welcome screen. Also, I use Windows LIVE Mail with MSN messenger. They both now WILL NOT remember my user or passwords, even after I check the save password boxes.. Also, any changes I make in Internet Explorer never saves, such as making folders, deleted a favorite. My wife says she thinks that this problem was before the update, but I noticed it then.

My system is a Dell Dimesion 9150, Windows XP, 8500GT Nvidia, 3 MG Ram.

Thanks for any help.Try This:
http://blogs.msdn.com/ieinternals/archive/2009/09/11/Troubleshooting-Stored-Login-Problems-in-IE.aspxI did all of the things he suggested, but to no avail. Uninstall IE8 and see if that helps. You can always reinstall it.

Solve : Entries in the Control Panel Listings?

Answer»

Sorry, me again with yet another query.
Think it comes under this XP forum and not software. (sorry if l'm wrong).
Anyway, every now and again l go into control panel to see if there are any entries that shouldn't be there, to basically tidy THINGS up and save some more precious space. Trouble with the the automatic MS updates is they put things in whether you want them or not.
At the moment, l've got three entries in there, NAMELY :-
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 185mb
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2 179mb
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1  28.04mb
Do l need all of these or can l clear any of them out?
Thanks

Yes, because different programs may ask for different .NET versions. You mean Control Panel/Add Remove programs...correct ? ?
Those should not be LISTED in Control Panel. Thanks Broni and Patio
Just a thought Broni as l might have saved another 180mb. Will leave them be.
Yes sorry Patio, l meant control panel/add remove programs. Windows update automatically downloaded these programs, l know not where, and it just so happens that these show up in the add/remove programs list.
Anyway, that's answered my original questions.
Thank you both. If you want to remove items from Control Panel the easiest way is with tweakuiYou're welcome

Solve : XP resets, wont boot to any mode, wont display bsod or failure statement?

Answer»

Tried "Do not reset " from F8..but still as above. New P4M900-M4 Biostar MoBo.
Hard drive is a clone of XP from my laptop, from 80Gig to Toshiba 1Tbyte.
Possible hint :my 12V is only ~11.16,all others are much closer to spec.
Can't get to any diagnostic, can't get CD to play a XP boot disk to try for Chdisk etc.
Bios is accessable but no change I've tried has cleared the problem. 1. 12V outside spec.  I agree that 11.16V is outside specs, but don't know what effect this will have on system.  You probably should resolve this before continuing...

2.  Windows XP.  Windows XP was designed to be installed (BUILT) on the system it is to run on.  It doesn't transfer well between different COMPUTERSReinstall it on the system it is to run on.

3.  Windows Advanced Options Menu.  Does F8 bring up the Windows Advanced Options menu?  If so, have you tried the following options:
     a.  Disable automatic restart on system FAILURE
     b.  Safe Mode
     c.  Enable VGA mode

4.  "...can't get CD to play a XP boot disk...".  You need a functional computer before attempting to install the Windows XP operating system.might be a driver problem if ur tring to use a clone hhd on a computer that doesnt have the same hardware Quote from: DWFComm on December 29, 2009, 08:59:31 PM

Hard drive is a clone of XP from my laptop, from 80Gig to Toshiba 1Tbyte.
You can't do that. You cannot clone a hd on one system and expect it to work on a different system unless they are 100% identical.

Solve : Have to double click everything!?

Hi i have a problem my computer makes me double or triple click everything or it wont open.  Even links and this text box i had to click 2 or more times for it to work.  My computer never used to do this and i have no IDEA how to get it back to normal i've restarted it many times.  Any help would be appreciated thank you!Try a different mouse & report back

Try a different mouse & report back

I second that. My old mouse started double clicking when I only single clicked. got a new mouse and everything was fine. (well, first I tried cleaning inside the old mouse, but when I found that even clicking on the button inside the mouse caused a erroneous double click, I just replaced it.There is a mechanical phenomenon called "contact bounce": essentially a bit of SPRINGY metal has loses its tension or got cracked. However, if the OP's problem is with a laptop mousepad, well, an external mouse may be an interim option pending repair.
Sorry i forgot to mention its a laptop.  I dont think its a mouse problem because some things are always still ONE click like the minimize or EXIT button but now all of the SUDDEN things that were only one click take several to work. Quote from: SkoalMan on January 01, 2010, 06:24:47 PM
but now all of the sudden things that were only one click take several to work.
Why don't you give some specific examples of these "things"?

I also like the idea of trying an "external" mouse, to see if the problem follows it...

Solve : Issue with "Language Bar" !?

Answer»

Hi Guys!

I don know for what REASON the "LANGUAGE Bar" button within the respective Screen is showing up Inactive?

Please access the "Language Bar" through:::

Control Panel>>Regional & Language options>>Language Tab>>Details>>TEXT & Input SERVICES.

& Refer to the attached screenshot.

Help will be sincerely appreciated....

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]try typing the following in the run box and clicking ok (then reboot)
Regsvr32.exe msutb.dll

If That doesn't work open up Word , CLICK on help, and select detect and repair.Disregard the previous post, that's not the issue.

It is showing as inactive because you only have one language installed. It won't activate until you add another language. Click the "Add..." button, then choose the language and keyboard layout you want. Once you add a second language, those buttons will activate.

Solve : Running Winzip for extraction from batch file?

Answer»

Hi,
I need to unzip one .zip file using a batch file in such a way that it should not prompt me to do anything. For WinRAR, we use some options like
WinRAR X -y -ibck
Same options are not working for Winzip too.

Please let me know what command should be given to achive the above result. You can just use WinZip Self-Extractor, which has the ability to create self-extracting Zip files that automatically extract files to a specified folder. This option has the same effect as clicking the Unzip BUTTON when the main dialog box is displayed, and, if the unzip operation is SUCCESSFUL, clicking the CLOSE button.

The latest version of WinZip Self-Extractor can be downloaded from the WinZip web site.
http://www.winzip.com/prodpagese.htm

To use this option, check the Unzip automatically box in the Options section of the WinZip Self-Extractor Wizard.

Both the Unzip automatically and Default to overwrite files without prompting options can be used together.

Note: If you wish to run a self-extracting Zip file that was not created with the Unzip automatically feature from another program, you can pass the /AUTO parameter to unzip the files without user interaction and specify a DESTINATION folder for the unzipped files. For example, if hello.exe is a self-extracting file, the command

hello.exe /auto c:\hello

will automatically extract files into the c:\hello folder. If you know how to do it with winrar why not just use winrar? It can open winzip files.

when i start my netbook i have to type in some CODES into GRUB to boot XP

Solve : Blue screen error message; cannot open in safe mode?

Answer»

Help. I am trying to get to the safe mode on my computer to see if I can figure out what is wrong.  I keep getting a blue screen that says:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevnt damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears agin follow these steps:

Check to make sure you have adequate disk space.  If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates.  Try changing video adapters.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical Information:

*** STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC0000005, 0x82F1DBCB, 0xF8A4169C, 0xF8A41398)

I tried several times to shut down and restart in safe mode but I get a black screen with a list that begins with :
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windowsAppPatch\drvmain.sdb
and a whole list of similar messages, then goes back to the blue screen with the error message.  What can I do?  Any help is appreciated.

I have a desktop Dell computer with Windows XP.

Any suggestions are welcome.  Where might I look for help?

Thanks,
PatThe moral of the story:

Always install the oldest Windows operating system first.  The newest OS's bootloader will autodetect your old OS and give you a choice.

Then again, the horses escaped the stable, so there's no point locking it...

With that being said, you have a few options:

1) Go into the BIOS and put the hard drive you want to boot from first in the boot order.  Change this when you want to boot into the other OS.  Major pain in the rear...

2) Edit Windows 7's BCD database.  Another major pain in the rear, but you might be able to use EasyBCD to help out...

3) If you are using Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate, install "Windows XP Mode" and forget about using a separate hard drive for XP:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx

Now copy all the stuff from your XP hard drive into your XP Mode virtual environment.

4) Use a third-party boot loader like GRUB.0.  Backup Data.  If there's "data" you can't afford to lose, STANDARD operating procedure (SOP) is to slave the hard drive to a working computer system to recover the data.  If you're workking with IDE hard drives, you must ensure they are jumpered correct (single, master, slave, or cable select).  See http://www.dtidata.com/resourcecenter/2007/04/23/how-to-slave-hard-drive/.

1.  Which Computer.  Your recovery options may depend UPON which computer you have.  If you can provide the model name/number, or better YET, the service tag number; we may be able to FIND some documentation on the Dell support website.

This information should be on a plate/sticker on the back of the computer.

2.  Resource(s).  What recovery resources do you have?
     a.  Windows XP Installation CD (Dell or Microsoft)
     b.  Dell restore/recovery discs
     c.  Dell restore/recovery partition on hard drive

3.  Recovery Console.  If you have an "installation" CD (not restore/recovery discs), you should check the integrity of the file system.

Boot to "Recovery Console" from the Windows XP Install CD.  When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press <R> key to start the Recovery Console.

You'll be asked to enter the "number" of the Windows installation you wish to repair (usually "1"), then the "Administrator" password, if one was set.  If you never assigned a password, just hit key.

Use the "chkdsk" command to verify the integrity of your file system and automatically attempt to fix errors found.  Use the following syntax: "chkdsk /p /r".    If you've followed the instructions, you don't need to enter a drive letter because you should be on the correct volume.

Depending upon the size of your partition, these checks could take a long time.  Let them run to completion without interruption.  The chkdsk utility was not designed to be interrupted - so don't.  Doing so might corrupt the file system.

The "exit" command is used to quit Recovery Console and restart the computer.

See:  Recovery Console Commands. How do you go poast 1 in the solution. GO into BIOS.Wanda, if you have a computer "issue" you'd like help with, you need to start your own "thread".  That being said, see How to enter the BIOS or CMOS setup.

no new software installed recently. I'm not sure when this problem actually started as its mostly used in the office where its muted. Just realised when i brought it home recently after i turned on the volume. I'm not sure why one would post a hijack this log for a sound problem - or do it in this forum, but okay.

yanbros - do a clean boot (reboot and as soon as you see the blue Welcome screen depress the LEFT CTRL key and hold it down until Windows finishes loading - when the curser changes from an hour glass to an arrow and remains an arrow for at least 10 seconds). Does the problems still occur? Quote from: ALLAN on January 03, 2010, 07:49:27 AM

Tried it twice. Problem persist. Okay. Then it's likely a hardware error or you do indeed have some malware, though it's unlikely malware would manifest itself in just this one way. I'd suggest checking for an update for your sound card as a first step. Of course you can also do a full scan with Trend Micro and MalwareByte (both, not just one). Hi , i've already updated my sound drivers to its latest. Scan also did not detect any malwares. Will hardware errors be shown on the device error? No. Sorry, at this point really not sure what the cause of your problem might be.Have you tried external speakers? Quote from: cruisin702 on January 04, 2010, 04:15:57 AM

I do not have external speakers at my disposal right now. I'm guessing it is a hardware issue? That would be my guess.

Solve : Need To Boot Up Window XP Computer?

Answer»

I have an AMD Sepron with Windows XP. before I TURNED it off and went to bed last night it was working. However, this morning when I turned it on, Windows apologized for not being able to LOAD successfully. It said that it was a change to my hardware or software.

Well, I tried the F8 key solution for Safe Mode and that did not work.i tried Last Configuration and that was unsuccessful.I turned off the computer hoping Windows would start in Safe Mode or with Last best Configuration.None of these have worked.
What can I do to load Windows and get my computer working again? What exactly happens when you try to BOOT (how far does it get, what do you see on the screen)? Was there ANYTHING UNUSUAL before this happened (new hw, SW virus, error, etc)?

Solve : Setting File Permissions in XP Home?

Answer»

My XP Home box has two users: an administrator and a limited user.  The guest account is disabled.  I have no local AREA network configured (I have only one machine).  I want both users to have read/write access to the folder C:\ThisFolder.  Both accounts have read access, but only the administrator account has write access.

I've tried using the "shrpubw" utility while in administrator mode, but this only tries to set the folder up for sharing on a network (which I don't have).  The limited user still can't write to this folder.  Is there a way to force XP Home to allow write access to this folder to the limited user account?I guess the most basic question would come first.

Have you tried Right clicking the folder>Properties>Security?EXACTLY. If you choose to share the file and make sure it has read/write then it works. Quote from: prosportal on January 02, 2010, 11:30:00 AM

Have you tried Right clicking the folder>Properties>Security?
The security tab isn't available in XP Home.  That's an XP Pro feature.

Quote from: Helpmeh

That's just it.  It won't let me share the folder unless I put it into the

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Shared Documents

directory.  The directory I want to share is required by an application, and it cannot be moved to the Shared Documents folder.shrpubw should work even if not on a network. When you get to the basic share permissions screen, SELECT "Customize share and folder permissions". In the permissions window, delete "Everyone" then add "administrators" and "users"(limited account) or whatever group you wish. You may also add specific users. You should then be able to set your file permissions accordingly.

You can also create your own groups in home edition by using the command PROMPT (Start>Run>CMD)

NET LOCALGROUP groupname /add - adds a new group

Net LOCALGROUP groupname username /add - adds user to the group

Hope this helps.

Solve : installing a device driver for an old video card?

Answer»

Running XP Media Center edition, service packs up to date, on a four year old Dell E510.

Got an error message saying "your system has recovered from a serious problem," which appears to have been a CRASH of the video card.  The error message says "Address a problem with ATI graphics driver."  Automatic updates don't come up with a more recent driver than I've got.

Control panel reveals that the driver is "ATI Radeon X300 SE 128MB Hypermemory."  ATI's WEBSITE shows that this driver has been dumped into the "legacy" category and is no longer supported.  It does, however, offer me - without any explanation - the opportunity to download software.  I've copied this below.

Here's the question: I'm in over my head here, and am concerned that I may make a bad situation worse if I try installing the wrong software.  So, if anyone can provide me guidance on whether to go ahead with this - and if so which software option to try - I'd be very grateful.  And, if this is the wrong approach altogether, I'd appreciate any other suggestions.  Thanks very much.

Firstly, never update any non-Microsoft driver through Windows updates. MS has a history of screwing things up.
Then, go to Dell site, enter your computer service tag number and download video driver from there. You always go to computer manufacturer first.
Uninstall current driver before installing new one.

Solve : Registry Error problems?

Answer»

I have Win XP pro sp1.

When booting up, I get the Windows Is Starting screen and then it turns into the Blue Screen Of Death.  Registry Error is the reason, along with a series of suggestions involving putting the system into Safe Mode and then the address where the error occurred.

When booting up in Safe Mode, I get the same Blue Screen and the same error address.

So I booted up from the XP CD and attempted a repair.  Sure enough, I got the same Blue Screen during the repair.  The error address was similar, but not exactly the same.

Is there any hope or do I have to do a complete reinstall?  And if I do a complete reinstall do I have to then have to reinstall all the programs?  (I THINK I do)  If so, I might as well reformat the drive as well, true?

Finally, I if I have to do this, I'd LIKE to do it on another hard drive so that I can access some of the information on the current C drive.  Is that possible if the registry is mucked up?

Thanks for your help.Hi, i dont know if tis help. But certainly most of the case of "Blue Screen error that suddenly pop up" come from the hardware configuration. First of all, try this first:

1) Check your RAM. If you have 2 or more, check its compatibility. Whether you using dual channel or not, each RAM must be same. For example, if you have 1 RAM 333mhz and another of 400Mhz, it will have hardware conflict later. The best possibility is to use only 1 RAM of your choice instead of using it together. Unless you are using value RAM or any RAM that comes in pair, you have to do this.

if everything goes well, try this:

2) Try checking your computer component. First you have to take out all your drive, network card or any add on component. Leave only motherboard, processor, heatsink and fans, and also RAM remain intact. Then test to boot your BIOS. If everything goes well, add your Hard disk and test boot.

** From your post, i believe at this stage, that blue screen will occured at which possibility is you need to change you hard disk as it is already damaged.

you might want to make your drive a slave so that you can backup all your data before using new drive. ^^Thank you.

The memory is fine.  In fact this PC has been operating A-Ok for 2 years.

I will disconnect the HDs and see if I can boot from the XP CD.  There is no network card, only 2 graphic cards. You don't need to unplug the hard drives to boot to a CD.
Why do you think that your registry is corrupt?
Did you make any hardware or software changes before you got the BSOD?i believe you didnt mean your registry editor corrupted right? i read some of "Blue screen" error and most of it mention about registry. But usually i didnt even use registry editor to solve the problem. It maybe mention about some clue for advanced users.
Try using another hard drive and test installing(format/repair) windows on it. If it success , most probably your hard drive lifespan expired My registry has been "on th edge" for days now since I did another repair a couple weeks back.  e.g. it wouldn't load a graphics driver and I had to reinstall Nero - even then it would freeze during a CD creation.  Plus it took all day to boot up.

I didn't make any changes to anything before the Blue Screen.

My current C drive is relatively new - barely a year old.  If I go to another drive it is considerably older, 3-4 years.

I wish there was some way of deciphering the STOP address.  Perhaps it would make more sense...e.g. whether it was  a memory problem or a registry problem.  Although the Blue Screen does say Registry Erroe.

It's not working now.  Test the system RAM.  See www.memtest86.com

How long is "all day"?  You might want to test the hard drive using diagnostics software available from the manufacturer's web site.  How about heat?  Do you have any temperature sensors that you can monitor?

Perhaps you could post the exact message text and NUMBERS of the STOP code from the BSOD? Quote
I wish there was some way of deciphering the STOP address.

There is...but you have yet to Post it here...Been away for the weekend.

I can't run any programs because I'm not even able to get to the command prompt.  In fact it bombs whenever I select an option from the Safe screen.

By "forever" I mean 3-4 minutes.

The STOP error address is:

0X00000051 (0X00000004, 0X00000001, 0XE1034830, 0X00000270)

I hope this helps.

If there is a way to execute memtest or any other program from the HD, I don' t know how to do it since I can't get to the HD.  They would have to be on CD IMO.

Thanks for taking the time on this.I too had this problem just last week. What I did is restart in dos command prompt, and entered "regscan". Then it informed me that my reg was corrupt and gave a list of backup dates to chose from. I chose the earliest one, and then I rebooted, and my operation system booted fine.

But you said you couldn't boot into dos. I don't why you couldn't. Are you sure you know the correct METHOD to get into dos?

I'm running a win 98 on an HP.

Hope this helps.
I can get into the command prompt through the Safe Mode.  I'll give it a try now...

No luck.  When booting from the disk it never gets past the PCI Device Listing screen.

It just hangs there.I'm not aware of any "regscan" command... Quote

You said earlier, that you're getting BSOD in Safe Mode, too....??I used to be able to get into Safe Mode.  Not any more.

Now it sticks on PCI Device Listing. Quote

Solve : Installing extra fan?

Answer»

For reasons I won't go into, I had to take apart the various parts of my tower, and just reassembled it. This is the first time I did this; the computer is also my source of income, so I'm very, very CAUTIOUS about it all. I have an extra fan, and need to know where to plug it in. The wires from the fan end in a white plastic plug, enclosing 4 female and 4 male pins. The bundle of wires from the power supplier (not sure if that's the correct TERM) have TWO sets of wires ending in the same type of white plastic plug, with female pins. The fan can obviously be ATTACHED to either of these plugs, i.e. male on the fan to female on the wires from the power supplier. Is that, in fact, where I plug it in? Does it matter which SET of wires it's plugged into, and if so, how can one tell which is the correct one?

Many, many thanks in advance to anyone who can guide me on this.

Marsha The white plastic plugs you describe here are called Molex plugs...
You can safely plug that fan into any free one you have coming from your power supply...

I'm assuming the reason the fan has both male and female is so it could be piggybacked to another fan connector if needed.

PS: All the Molex plugs from the PSU carry the same voltages so there is no right or wrong one...any empty one will do.Patio,

Many many thanks for the help and terminology. It's much appreciated.

Marsh Welcome Aboard ! !  Stop by anytime...

Solve : re:formating c drive to NTFS?

Answer»

Hi, I am trying to install windows 7 onto windows xp computer and I am running into problems because it says my drive doesn't exist (c drive) I have figured out that I need to re:format it to NTFS but now I can't seem to do the steps required.  In my normal login I am DENIED access (even though I have administrator capabilities) and when I do it in safe MODE I can type in the commands that I need in the command prompt, but it asks me for my volume label for the c drive and I have no idea what that is.  I just want to GET this program on my computer.. any ideas?  THANKSBoot to the Win7 DVD...
Delete the xisting partition then re-create it.
Then select format and choose NTFS...I tried that, but it doesn't give me an option to delete.  I tried booting the computer up from the disk and then it gives me the option to delete and re:format.. but there are no partitions showing at all.

I think I need to be able to do this from the command prompt, before I even try the upgrade?!  Is there some way to find out the volume label for a drive so I can try to get past that question on my command prompt and hopefully work my way through the rest of the instructions I have (force a dismount, and schedule a drive)

Thanks!if your wanting to wipe your system and start again use this.....
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/dban/dban-beta.2007042900_i386.zip?download

its dban (darviks boot and nuke) open it extract it burn to a cd or install to a jump drive adn wipe then you can clean install.
win 7 will ask you how you want to divide the DRIVES adn select NTFS and select a SIZE for the drive Quote

because it says my drive doesn't exist (c drive)
What does that mean?
When installing Windows 7 it wants to be the called that is called C: even if it is the second partition on the drive.
Unforgettably, Windows may call a partition a drive. And the first partition is not always given the letter C by Windows.Very confusing.
In any case, the proper way to install Windows 7 is by booting off the DVD and read the instructions.
If Windows 7 does not find any drive in the system, it we tell you.According to my understanding Windows 7 can use FAT32 formated drives as well as NTFS ones. Maybe the problem lies elsewhere. Quote
I tried that, but it doesn't give me an option to delete.  I tried booting the computer up from the disk and then it gives me the option to delete and re:format.. but there are no partitions showing at all.

This doesn't make sense...where is this Win7 DVD from ? ?I just re-read your post and it seems you were mounted to a virtual drive...somehow had problems...and had to re-boot,

It would have been nice if this part of the issue was mentioned.

Solve : How to view files on a hard drive with a bootable OS??

Answer»

Hi

I had a laptop that died. I would like to access those files and copy them to my desktop. I boght an external housing for the hard drive and  hooked it up through the usb on my desktop but my desktop did not recognize the hard drive.

How can I view those files on my desktop?

The desktop is xinwos xp sp3, the hard drive was VISTA. Not sure if the hard drive was fat 32 or ntsf. The laptop hard drive had two partitions, C with its OS, and D was a recovery partition.

Thanks,Does the drive show up in Disk Management ? ?
Right Clik My Computer...select Manage ...then Disk Management.
Right clik the drive ...select Properties and report back...

You may have to try This as well...
No, it does not show up. I am wondering if having the windows OS on it is confusing the XP machine? No. The drive would still show up as would its contents. Are you certain it was the laptop that "died" and not the hd? Quote from: keano0166 on JANUARY 05, 2010, 08:19:45 AM

It would not. This suggests that the drive may be dead.

Would the OS file system (fat 32 vs ntsf) impede on the files and drive being visible?

No, the drive is 100% working. The hdd that I am trying to view is actually the original hdd to the laptop that I imaged back to a new hdd about a MONTH ago. So that drive was working and has been sitting in one spot since then. I could pop out the new hdd that is in the laptop, but I pretty sure the hdd is working.

Would some acronis tool help with the viewing of files? Should the laptop hdd be conected prior to the os booting? Should I try to maybe  PLAY with the pins and MAKE him a slave? Quote from: keano0166 on January 05, 2010, 09:24:07 AM

Does not mean it has not failed. Also external enclosure could be faulty. ok, so I will pop out the other hdd and see if I can see that one.

Should the laptop hdd be conected prior to the os booting?

Shouldn't matter if it's USB but no harm in trying both ways

Solve : Avast antivirus did't load properly, can't remove it or get it to open?

Answer»

I have been going round and round with the Avast support team to no avail. I have the shortcut on the left but no icon on the BOTTOM right. Avast told me to try opening all hidden icons, which I did.Didn't work. I can get it to bring up all the folders for the program but cannot get it to bring up the screen that lets you scan or adjust settings. Going thru their installation manual I noticed that I did not get thru the ENTIRE installation. The screen that says "welcome to Avast home edition" never came up. I have tried some of their suggestions. I restarted the computer, tried the 'safe mode' option to get it up. I right CLICKED on it and hit run as and got an error ' A device attached to system is not functioning'. I cannot even REMOVE it from the programs now because in order to I have to bring up the options screed first which I cannot do! HELP!Try REVO uninstaller to uninstall Avast completely, then reinstall it.Have you tried RUNNING it from the Start menu instead of the shortcut ? ?

Solve : 137 GB Limitation?

Answer»

We installed XP Pro on a new Seagate 640 GB Sata drive and we are limited to 137 GB.  How can we get the full drive recognized wo/ a new reinstall of XP Pro.  After the install we installed SP2.well you can go to start>right click on my computer>manage>storage>disk managment and you can take the unollocated space and maeke a new partition Excuse my failure to mention in the opening that we would rather not partition.  We're looking for one partition of 640 GB. http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic36678.html
I have an original XP Pro installation wo/ SP1 on a 640 GB Seagate Sata Drive. Can I use Partition Manager to create one partition. Is there a limit to the size of a partition using Partition Manager? Or would I have to make one very large partition and one smaller partition? I am trying to avoid reformatting the hard drive and creating a slipstream XP installation disc. This is not a BIOS problem, it's an XP Pro early edition problem. Here you go....

http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=c9fec8fcbe4c9110VgnVCM100000f5ee0a0aRCRD&locale=en-US

go to the downloads and get the software. It will let your machine see the whole drive.

is that not a Drive-overlay program? Will those work after windows is installed?I assume you are talking about Seatools for DOS or would I be able to RECOGNIZE the whole drive using Seatools for Windows?I think SeaTools is a Drive Overlay program- those are really only useful when the BIOS cannot recognize the correct size- but that is not the case. As you said you don't want to have to reinstall from a slipstreamed XP- so the solution involves finding a partition tool that can resize partitions without destroying their contents. Acronis TrueImage,Partition Magic, and numerous other programs can perform this task- I don't know of any free ones, however...Your Drive Controller is only 28-bit, and needs to be replaced with 48-bit controller. I'd buy a cheap PCI drive controller that will give you 48-bits of data addressing of the drive to unlock the full potential of your drive. His problem is with the Initial Release of XP's problem with drives larger then 137... It's the generic IDE disk driver provided in the original release.

It was (I presume) installed using a XP (no SERVICE pack) CD, and subsequently UPDATED. They can access the rest of the disk now, but they want it all in one partition- thus my suggestion for a partition resizer.I do know of a free partition manager w/ good reviews.........from EASEUS......called Partition Manager Free Home Edition.....said to be pretty safe from data loss.STOP!

tThe post by BC_Programmer IS RIGHT ON!
For the right answer you have to read the whole thing on the Seagate site. It is a Microsoft Boo Boo in the XP and even sp1. It was FIXED in XP sp2, but not in sp2 on top of sp1 unless you read everything. Ad do what it says.
Failure to pay attention to this detail can destroy the whole SYSTEM!
Read this: http://www.48bitlba.com/

So you want to sell a product to solve this ? ?
Are you aware all the ads there are for paid for programs when free alternatives are out there ? ?Here's a thought.....if one were to slipstream service packs with the original XP OS, would a repair install possibly allow one recognize the whole hard drive as one partition?

Solve : cant access system restore in safe mode?

Answer»

Computer says system restore services cannot be started in safe mode

this is a new one i havent seen this happen before, any clues on what to do
You can run system restore from a command prompt:

Start your computer by selecting Safe Mode with Command Prompt.
When the command prompt is displayed, type the following: [systemroot]\system32\restore\rstrui.exe (the system root folder is the folder to which you installed the XP operating system files, usually c:\windows).

Press Enter

Now you can follow the instructions on the screen to use System Restore

Still, nothing beats imaging software. Everybody should use itSo, even though I cant access it from the accessories menu, I can still start it from the command prompt?  Wouldnt it still give me that dialog box "system restore services are not available in safe mode", just like it did before?

Just do it.
Or are you trying to help a customer and don't want to look foolish if it doesn't work?My UNDERSTANDING is:
     a.  You cannot "create" a restore point from Safe Mode.
     b.  You may "restore" to a previously created "restore point" from Safe Mode.
     c.  You may not "undo" a restoration done from Safe Mode (because Safe Mode is not able to automatically create the restore point needed for the undo).Choose the command prompt as you enter safe mode:

At the command prompt, type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe, and then press ENTER

C:\>%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Yeah, already posted that above.

Sorry about the repeat.

I have never had :

C:\>%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

fail  except when restore had been turned off.

Good luck to OP.
