Solve : Games Crashing Frequently - Occasional BSOD - I'm out of ideas? |
Answer» My computer has been having issues for months. The gist of it comes down to Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered. With the occasional VIDEO_SCHEDULER_INTERNAL_ERROR blue screen. I've tried two different GPUs, both give the same problem and neither have problems on my friend's PC. I've even shipped my GPU back to GIGABYTE under an RMA and they stated nothing is wrong with it. I have tried different motherboards (same model). I have tried different CPUs (same model). I have tried swapping between each of my sticks of RAM, using only one at a time (in addition to running memtest86 for several hours). I have re-installed Windows multiple times (using both Rufus to create a boot drive and trying Reset This PC). I have used DDU to clean my drivers and re-install. I have tried various versions of my BIOS and various GPU drivers. I have swapped out the stock cables on my PSU for aftermarket ones. I have not tried a different PSU at this time. I have also tried lowering the core clock and memory clock of my GPU a significant amount in increments to no avail. Setting the Power Management in Nvidia Control Panel to "Prefer maximum performance" did not resolve the issue. I have absolutely no idea what to do at this point with the exception of trying a new PSU but I wanted to check here and see what your thoughts were before as I don't currently have the available funds to give that a shot. Please give me any advice you can and I'll happily provide any information you need. Speccy: https://pastebin.com/4KeYu6Gp Minidump: https://ufile.io/mokds5id Sysnative: https://ufile.io/dsrgoq6hHard Drive or SSD can be cause with virtual memory issue if the data passed to virtual memory and back to RAM gets corrupt through the process. Have you checked the drive health or tried a different drive yet?Hi Dave, Thanks for the response! I had checked the drive health of all my drives, and the SSDs were in good health. I don't specifically recall seeing any issues with the HDD but I don't want to confirm it was good or bad. I have actually somewhat RESOLVED the problem. I took out all my drives and reinstalled windows on both SSDs and used them both individually for a while to verify no crashes. So far I've had no issues, though I still only have one of my SSDs in. So I've thought it was either a Windows update, an issue with the combination of drives. Or the HDD itself. Could you elaborate a bit on this for me? I'm not super familiar with virtual memory and the process involved. If I'm playing games or doing something graphically intensive on games/programs that aren't on the HDD, could it still cause the problem (does the virtual memory still pass through that drive)? Dave's theory is that the HDD could be corrupting pagefile contents, which go into memory and cause these issues. I'm not convinced that is plausible, though. 1. all the failures are in dxgmms2.sys, and it seems very unlikely for arbitrary HDD corruption to cause that. 2. Disk Drives have error correction. If the data they read is corrupted, they won't actually send it as the result of I/O and will retry the operation. if they can't read the data without the ECC triggering they will eventually fail the read operation- At which point, I expect, there would be a BSOD surrounding the virtual memory manager. Given your new information I think your assessment regarding the power supply could be correct. Removing drives would reduce the load on the power supply, and Graphics cards are the greatest consumer of Power in many modern systems. It could be the PSU just can't handle the system when under load and the Graphics card is the component that has trouble as a result. (You don't mention what the current power supply is, by the way ) Quote from: BC_Programmer on June 04, 2021, 04:52:56 PM Dave's theory is that the HDD could be corrupting pagefile contents, which go into memory and cause these issues.True, apologies for that! It's an EVGA 1000W GQ, so I never really thought load might be the problem. Unless it's possible the power supply is just defective, but I assumed (seemingly incorrectly) I'd be seeing more severe issues if the power supply were the problem.A Failed/Failing or overloaded Power Supply can present a MYRIAD of unusual issues. I have had Secondary/tertiary hard drives arbitrarily disappear from the system and even had the boot drive "disappear" which quickly caused the system to hang up completely. I found out it was the power supply long after I'd "taken it out of service" and was just applying random upgrades to it, upgraded the PSU and all those issues went away. That supply looks to be from 2015. It's age probably isn't important but it's possible that the voltages used in a PC CHANGED in that time. Perhaps more stuff uses 3.3V or 5V, now? which look to be limited to 24A on that supply, VERSUS the 80+ Amps that it can deliver on 12V. I know back then 12V was converted to 3.3V by the VRM on the motherboard but I honestly don't know if that changed- did they switch to 3.3V as voltages for CPUs went down further? I can't find anything. |

Solve : Bluetooth Disappeared from Device Manager? |
Answer» I have an LG laptop (motherboard by LG Electronics, Model 17Z90N, Version FAB1) that is LESS than 2 months old. I’ve been using a Bluetooth mouse without any issues until yesterday after a Windows 10 20H2 update. I discovered the mouse wasn’t working. I checked Device Manager I discovered the Bluetooth icon was missing. Checking the hidden file option, I found the Bluetooth Icon with the listed drivers but was UNABLE to enable this device. I uninstalled the Bluetooth driver(s) thinking they would auto reinstall on a reboot. They didn’t, I tried downloading the manufacturer Bluetooth drivers (zip file with install) and the install PROGRAM failed to install the drivers. I’ve tried rolling back the Update, didn’t help. Tried rolling the computer back to an earlier date, no date was available due to the update. I called LG, they wanted me to reinstall Windows and see if that would fix the problem. I really didn’t WANT to reinstall all my programs so I told tech support I’d do a little research first and would get back with them. Tried the Google search option and the fixes didn’t work. I called MS tech support, they told me it was a motherboard, hardware problem and not due to their update. They recommended I return the computer… The computer was purchased at Costco so the return is not an issue. The computer seems to be working fine, other than not having a Bluetooth option and I'd rather not have to reinstall EVERYTHING if there is a simple fix? |

Solve : Problem opening .jpg on new laptop? |
Answer» I RECENTLY bought a new laptop and i am having a strange problem. I have hundreds of photo's saved as .jpg and i had no problem opening them on my old laptop. But on the new one about 5% of them won't open in any program. I get a message saying it apears we don't support this file format. I THOUGHT MAYBE they had become corrupted so i tried them on my old laptop again and they open without any problem. Both laptops are windows 10.Are these files unusually smaller in file size than the other JPGS that open? They are about the same size but when i click properties the ones that won't open say things like this |

Solve : A question about hibernation in Windows 10? |
Answer» Hello, its my first post here, How do you know that? In the root of c: drive is there a large file named hiberfil.sys? I know that because it resumes the previous session, browsers are open and such.. also i see the Windows logo when i press the power button.. But u gave me a great idea and that is to check for hiberfil.sys Thank you I am grateful for your effort..I gave you the answer to enable hibernation, so it that shows as an option in the Start Menu > Power options as you asked (you said only sleep is available). Checking for the hiberfil.sys file only proves that the laptop was hibernated before at some point, as you can have both hibernate and sleep set at the same time. Look at the picture of the Power Options on this page: https://windowsreport.com/hibernate-start-menu-windows-10/Quote from: Gizmo on March 26, 2021, 12:23:57 PM Sorry, but that's not correct. The hiberfil.sys is immediately deleted when hibernation is disabled. It's presence indicates that hibernation is enabled.I didn't say it was disabled - the original question stated that the option to hibernate was not available in the start menu power options. The poster hosa wants that option in the start menu - I provided instructions on how to do that. It doesn't mean it isn't already enabled in the power settings in control panel (or Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings > Choose what the power buttons do / Choose what closing the lid does), as there are separate options for these two occurrences, and you can have one set to hibernate, the other to sleep, or both to sleep..... are you getting it yet? Quote from: Gizmo on March 27, 2021, 12:21:57 AM I didn't say it was disabled - the original question stated that the option to hibernate was not available in the start menu power options. Yes, thanks.. I just think it is hibernating somehow, without that option being enabled. Maybe it is a bug, since the system hasn’t been updated for a while. My deduction could be a bit cloudy.. idkQuote from: Gizmo on March 27, 2021, 12:21:57 AM I didn't say it was disabled - the original question stated that the option to hibernate was not available in the start menu power options. You know, I'm not quite sure why you find it necessary to be so defensive and nasty, but on this site all we want to do is help solve problems without getting into spats. If that's a problem for you, perhaps another site would be more to you liking.@Allan I did not notice there was 11 days between the posts, when you replied the posts were a bit out of sync with each other (to me). I do take time writing a response because I want it to be accurate and easy to read, also there is information to look up and refer to, and someone may jump in before me and post something which is easy to do if you are just going to bang out a reply. On this occasion I had given the correct information 3 times, and if people are going to jump in and muddy the waters with slightly inaccurate answers it annoys me. It also annoys me when the very first information given by the poster is enough to answer the question, but you get the same people saying "post your computer specs, do this, do that" when they haven't even stopped to analyse what the UNDERLYING cause might be, and completely overrun and confuse what should be a SIMPLE fix.People are permitted to post. If their posts are repetitive or offer advice that is different from yours, so be it. It's not your job to criticize them. Just direct your posts to the OP, not to others in the thread. While we appreciate your contributions and desire to offer intelligent advice, you need to do so without intentionally offending others. STAY on point without challenging or criticizing others and we'll all get along fine.Sorry for reviving an “oldish” thread, But I found out my friend is also experiencing the same issue On his Windows 8 laptop he says it happens when it remains in sleep after a certain period of time, he says that hybrid sleep is turned off and he didn’t enable hibernation.. I need to get to the bottom of this... Im sure its not just us experiencing this...I found this , the information is completely new to me.. https://www.michaellinenberger.com/blog/four-windows-10-power-settings-you-should-probably-change-hibernation-and-sleep/ I guess ill have to modify the amount of time because i think its too short.. |

Solve : Help with windows 10? |
Answer» Is there a recommended WIN 10 book for seniors? I don't have a local tutor and just turning on the pc, wants me to just turn it off. I tried to remove BING no luck. Before taking it back to a local tech, I would like to try making changes myself to get a nice almost blank screen with only items I put on. I would just perform Google searches for each thing you want to do. For example, if you want Windows 10 to look more like Windows 7, do a search for that ("make windows 10 look like windows 7). Downloading and using "Open Shell" (formerly Classic Shell) is the first thing you should do and should make you feel much better very quickly. |

Anyone else having similar issues?Explorer taking a long time to open a window could indicate a hard drive problem. If you can open Explorer and click on My PC, right click on the C: drive, click on the Tools tab and then in Error Checking click on Check. If there are any problems hopefully windows can fix them, or at least indicate if that is the cause. If it is not that then we will have to delve further into what is causing the problem."Tools" isn't a right-click option. Presume you mean "Properties=>Tools"? ETA: Meant to include that I ran that, and it was fine.Rather than start with the Windows tools to check files, I suggest you check the Hard drive is up to running these checks. I would run a copy of HD sentinel from here https://www.hdsentinel.com/download.php Check the drive and if it is failing have it replaced. Then run the tools Gizmo suggested. All good, I think?Yes you are correct the SSD is ok. What about the free space. A SSD for long life and reliable operation you need to MAINTAIN at least 10% free space + 20GB for windows workspace. Hd sentinel will show this as well. Oh I have at least 45 percent free. |

Solve : WMP on windows 10? |
Answer» I have Windows 10 64 bit v 1903 os build 18362.778 - kb4549951 - can I install a completely new version of Windows Media Player? I have somehow messed things up by uninstalling whatever WMP I had and now have no trace of WMP anywhere on my PC - just not listed anywhere. All online advice is about reinstalling by using "Turn features on or off" but there is no WMP listed so I'm stumped. I had thought that I could remove WMP completely and start afresh. Any advice appreciated.Windows Media Player is in "Turn Features On Or Off" under "Media Features" (click on the PLUS sign)I already tried that, before my post. On my pc There is no plus sign by Media Features and nothing happens when I click that FEATURE. That's what I mean - there seems to be no way to connect to get anything done via Windows 10. That's why I thought perhaps I could download WMP as a separate, new, program.See if this helps: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/14209/get-windows-media-playerThanks for interest and the link, Allan. Again, before my post, I tried that and WENT through all the settings list = Apps features, Manage Optional Features, Add Feature - then nothing - WMP not listed at all. I don't think it's going to let me get WMP. I used it mainly for music cd management - I'll try another media player.Windows Media Player is part of an upgrade or a standard Windows 10 installation. New installations (or new computers with Windows 10 installed) will also have Media Player installed too. So this will work in both situations. |

Solve : PC never stops loading? |
Answer» I'm not quite sure I'm in the right area but here goes. My wife's PC (HP) keeps continuously loading after starting up. The PC started out with windows 8, then to 8.1 and now the latest version of 10. It's been upgraded to 10 for several years so what has changed has me puzzled. I can access the net and surf OK but the PC continues to peck away staying busy. I'm talking never stops, not just a long time.Does it stop when you're just OPENING programs with no internet connection?Quote from: SUPERDAVE on March 31, 2021, 05:05:46 PM Does it stop when you're just opening programs with no internet connection?Yes it does. I just booted it up and it was still busy at least 3 to 4 minutes after I could have gotten online. It does slow down quite a bit but starts pecking away again with hardly much of a pause. My wife does have 5 flash drives hooked up if that makes a difference. I have two on the one I'm posting on and it stops shortly after I can get online. I just went and checked it and it's still pecking away.I unplugged all of the flash drives but it didn't seem to help much. I changed my router recently and decided to remove (forget) all of the wireless networks I had with the old router, and thought it SEEMED to help but just now went to shut it down and reboot it and found it pecking away as before Hi Most HP computers have built in diagnostics in the bios, to access Turn on the computer and immediately press esc repeatedly, about once every second. If all the tests check out then when windows has started press CTRL alt delete and see what program is using the most resources. If it is a non windows program then TRY disabling it. If it is a windows component then try. From a administrator command prompt. Run SFC /scannow to ask windows to check the system files. I followed your advice and didn't get anything substantial. The esc key showed something but didn't stay long enough to read but did see keyboard error at the end. I didn't see anything using hardly any resources and the SFC /scannow yielded way too many things to go over but it did say it had found and repaired corrupted files. I just finished running a Malware Bytes and a McAfee scan and found nothing. My computer is much quieter now after coming out of sleep. BTW, if nothing else, my computer goes to sleep now which it wasn't doing. I was going to dig into later. Thanks very much for your help, it was much appreciated. I hate to say it but my computer is pecking its little brain out again and won't stop. I was searching for why my computer won't stop loading and it slowed down to almost nothing, just a peck every now and then |

Solve : Restart During Windows Update? |
Answer» Is it ok to restart Windows 10 while the update in the settings app says "installing: 58%" for example? Wondering if maybe its STUCK or something cause its been a while and if restarting would help, however, computer 101 is dont restart obv. FIGURE, though, that in this instance it might not be bad since restarting windows natively while its updating in the background. COULDNT find relevant INFO online.Yes, it's okay. |

Solve : Where to Save New Apps - C: Drive or D: Drive?? |
Answer» I've just STARTED using my new rig with Windows 10. I'm coming from a Windows 7 Pro PC so I'm still getting used to the new interface. I'm setting my PC to save my data on a SEPARATE D: drive. But what about new apps. Is it suggested to save those on the C: Drive with the OS files?Mostly it's a personal preference but I install all my apps to the C: drive for several REASONS. First of all, my C: drive is an SSD (D: is a spinner) so my apps will load faster. Also, even if you install apps on the D: drive, some of the required files for the app will still be installed on the C: drive. There will also be registry entries made (registry exists on C:). That means that your apps are actually installed spread across 2 drives. I would rather have the apps contained on a single drive. As strollin said, personal preference. PERSONALLY, I have multiple partitions on all of my systems and try to keep C: drive only for the OS, my AV, and ONE or two other "key" apps. Everything else is installed on other partitions. I prefer to keep they system partition as small as possible. But hey, that's me - there is little if any advantage to one way or the other. |
