Solve : A question about hibernation in Windows 10?

Answer»

Hello, its my first post here,
Please excuse my newbiness and ignorance..
We have a family HP laptop , and Ive had this confusion for a while now.
Everytime I power it on, it starts from boot, however, all the applications that have been running
previously are still open, as it was. So I think it was actually hibernating..
But then when I’m all done, I want to put it to HIBERNATE too, but I don’t see any option in the
Start menu for that, only sleep and sign out.. I am aware there are tweaks to enable hibernation,
but i am not interested in that.. I want to know how to hibernate it the same way the others have, without tweaking or cmd ...

Thank you for your time...It should hibernate when you close the lid or you have the option on the Start button to sleep.I checked battery options and it is set to sleep on close lid and on power button pressing ..
Im frustrated because i know it wakes up from hibernation not sleep..How do you know that? In the root of c: drive is there a large file named hiberfil.sys? To enable hibernation in Windows 10:

Select Start , then select Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings

Select "Choose what the power button does", and then select "Change settings that are currently unavailable". Under "Shutdown settings", select the "Hibernate" checkbox (if it's available), and then select "Save changes".

Now you’ll be able to hibernate your PC:
Select Start , and then select Power > Hibernate.Quote from: Allan on March 14, 2021, 06:06:14 AM

I know that because it resumes the previous session, browsers are open and such.. also i see the
Windows logo when i press the power button..
But u gave me a great idea and that is to check for hiberfil.sys
Thank you I am grateful for your effort..I gave you the answer to enable hibernation, so it that shows as an option in the Start Menu > Power options as you asked (you said only sleep is available).

Checking for the hiberfil.sys file only proves that the laptop was hibernated before at some point, as you can have both hibernate and sleep set at the same time.

Look at the picture of the Power Options on this page:

Sorry, but that's not correct. The hiberfil.sys is immediately deleted when hibernation is disabled. It's presence indicates that hibernation is enabled.I didn't say it was disabled - the original question stated that the option to hibernate was not available in the start menu power options.
The poster hosa wants that option in the start menu - I provided instructions on how to do that.

It doesn't mean it isn't already enabled in the power settings in control panel (or Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings > Choose what the power buttons do / Choose what closing the lid does), as there are separate options for these two occurrences, and you can have one set to hibernate, the other to sleep, or both to sleep..... are you getting it yet?

Yes, thanks..
I just think it is hibernating somehow,
without that option being enabled.
Maybe it is a bug, since the system hasn’t been updated for a while.
My deduction could be a bit cloudy.. idkQuote from: Gizmo on March 27, 2021, 12:21:57 AM

You know, I'm not quite sure why you find it necessary to be so defensive and nasty, but on this site all we want to do is help solve problems without getting into spats. If that's a problem for you, perhaps another site would be more to you liking.@Allan I did not notice there was 11 days between the posts, when you replied the posts were a bit out of sync with each other (to me).
I do take time writing a response because I want it to be accurate and easy to read, also there is information to look up and refer to, and someone may jump in before me and post something which is easy to do if you are just going to bang out a reply.
On this occasion I had given the correct information 3 times, and if people are going to jump in and muddy the waters with slightly inaccurate answers it annoys me.
It also annoys me when the very first information given by the poster is enough to answer the question, but you get the same people saying "post your computer specs, do this, do that" when they haven't even stopped to analyse what the UNDERLYING cause might be, and completely overrun and confuse what should be a SIMPLE fix.People are permitted to post. If their posts are repetitive or offer advice that is different from yours, so be it. It's not your job to criticize them. Just direct your posts to the OP, not to others in the thread. While we appreciate your contributions and desire to offer intelligent advice, you need to do so without intentionally offending others. STAY on point without challenging or criticizing others and we'll all get along fine.Sorry for reviving an “oldish” thread, But I found out my friend is also experiencing the same issue
On his Windows 8 laptop he says it happens when it remains in sleep after a certain period of time, he says that hybrid sleep is turned off and he didn’t enable hibernation..
I need to get to the bottom of this...
Im sure its not just us experiencing this...I found this , the information is completely new to me..

I guess ill have to modify the amount of time because i think its too short..
