Solve : Windows Update won't load through start screen (please help)? |
Answer» Well... it didn't take long for me to have issues again. Why does this always happen to me? You need to do a few cold boots to get rid of the interrupted update hang...then go ahead and run manual updates. Um... what? That made no sense. Can you do a more thorough explanation of what I have to do?bumpCold boot = power down...wait 30 seconds...powerup....repeat a few timesSo... an update showed up today. After I installed it... it started working normally again. I should be happy. Which I am. However... I can't seem to turn off Windows Defender even though I already have Avast. Help? I know this is completely different from what I posted about but I like Avast and I don't want Windows Defender. I'd really appreciate any help with this. Thank you.See Here... Quote from: patio on August 03, 2016, 12:12:48 PM See Here... But that only turns if off temporarily right? How do I turn it off permanently? Also... for some reason... my Avast was saying the shields were on but Windows was claiming it was off. I somehow fixed this by simply turning Avast shields off then turning them on again. One second question. How can I prevent this from happening again? Because I really don't want it to happen again. Are there specific custom settings I have to use for CCleaner for Windows 10? If so, what are they? I just really need help/advice on preventing this from happening again... Thanks for the help and I'd appreciate any help with this as well. Thanks again. It's because Avast and Defender are butting heads...And if you sy its only temporarily you didn't read the whole link...HOPEFULLY what I did fixed it. But I still would like to know how to prevent this issue from occurring again. Am I supposed to be using specific settings for CCleaner for a Windows 10 computer? Or maybe I can just not use CCleaner at all or only every so often instead of once a week? Just not sure how to prevent this from happening again...See above...Avast and Defender were butting heads...CCleaner has nothin to do with it.A number of CCleaner "Cleaning" Options make Windows 10 unbootable, cause all store apps to fail to function, and various other issues. Best to not use it at all on Windows 10. Use the built-in Disk Cleanup instead. Hmm... so you're saying that was the likely cause of Windows update not loading through the Search bar next to the start button? I didn't know Disc Cleanup was on Windows 10. I ASSUMED it wasn't because it's not on Windows 8.1. I'm guessing if I search 'Disk Cleanup' in the search bar I'll find it?Disk Cleanup can be started several ways. One is to type Disk Cleanup in the Windows search box (the box that says "Ask me anything"), located just to the right of the Windows icon at the left end of your taskbar. You should see what is shown in the attached photo. If you right click on Disk Cleanup in that panel, you have Pin to Start and Pin to Taskbar options, which you might want to apply. I'll try using it next Monday and I'll probably make a System Restore point before using it just to be safe because I seriously don't want to take any chances and don't want this issue to occur again. |

Solve : Cloning hard drive using macrium? |
Answer» Hi, I wanted to clone my internal hard drive which was INFECTED, of my laptop to an external hard drive using macrium software with the help of a tutorial from YouTube and all went good. But while booting the external hard drive it shows up blue screen .What message and error condition is in the blue screen? I wanted to clone my internal hard drive which was infected, of my laptop to an external hard drive using macrium software*Question I have also is... did you just clone a drive that was infected or are you trying to clone a clean copy of the system overtop of an infected drive? To me cloning an infected drive is an odd thing to do because why would you want 2 drives with the same infection so maybe I am reading your help request wrong. Also if you need help with malware/virus removal this can be redirected to the virus help section.Error message was "Inaccessible_boot_device". No, I have not created macrium recovery bootable disk. I am trying to clone the total system, sorry here infection in the sense it was attacked by a malware that ENCRYPTED all my files and malware has been removed. And only encrypted files remains that I need to take it into external hard drive. Quote from: IPDO on JULY 30, 2016, 06:13:21 AM ... But while booting the external hard drive it shows up blue screen .You can't boot from the external hard drive. It is an "Inaccessible_boot_device". You have to create recovery media, USB flash drive or CD/DVD & then restore the image saved to the external hard drive. My only question is why you would wanna clone an infected drive ? ? |

Solve : XP pc ps2 ,but other installed application' prompt to update sp & security ?? |
Answer» EVEN after a PC recovery my PC says that I have service packs two or sp2 update ,but while trying to installing most any applications, exe's , ATI catalyliist display control I will get a prompt message that I need to update my service packs & XP updates too I know that Microsoft ended XP support, but I noticed they still have most all kinds of XP related applications that should work with my older programs that I'm trying to run once more ? I believe during my PC crash recovery that during Recovery that I was installed some shortcut like hotfix service packs or instead of a Standalone updates which are to be better to have ? I have check for 1.0 ,2.0 ,3.5 Net Framework folders which I do have, but I notice that when I went to Amdmistrive tools I though I remember seeing a listing of Net Framework 1.0 & 1.1 install or repair select option. Which seems to give myself another clue that my PC is not updated to SP2 as found on my PC performance user tag now ? Open an explorer window...go to Help/About Windows... It'll TELL you which SP's are installed...Update: Yes,That what I see as XP SP2, But why do older applications programs prompt to say that I need to update SP2 which I'm sure there can be another S.Pack3 update to install ? I forgot to mention that I have a net framework 1.1 located in my program files ,but no more than that ! Should I have 1.0, 2.0, 2.2 & 3.5sp1 or even more of these kind of Net Framework files located in my program files & installed too ? I still believe when my XP Media ctr. crashed & I used system recovery that I feel that not everything was updated to Framework 3.5 Sp2 as shown The .net frameworks aren't cumulative so go ahead and install them up to 3.5 Also see here : http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/microsoft_windows_xp_service_pack_3.html I need to uninstall my recent net framework 3.5 ps3 for to install net framework 1.0- sp1,sp2,sp3 / 1.1 -sp1, sp2, sp3 / 2.0-sp1,sp2 sp3 / 2.0-sp1,sp2 sp3, / 3.0-sp1,sp2,sp3 / 3.5-sp1,sp2,sp3 / A reminder that I'm trying to fix installation issues & pc gameplay operational functions back on my XP media center edition 32 bit 05' desktop. Not much more than that ,but THOUGHT about using one of my two extra Vista Home Basic desktops instead incase I can't improve on fixing my XP issues, but not sure if Vista are up for the older pc gameplay software installs For what it is worth... About two month ago I did a fresh install of Windows XP SP-3 on my Dell desktop. I then installed some programs I normally use, such ans SyncToy There are a number of Framework versions that I had to have. Here is an screenshot attachment of the files listed in the remove programs tool. [attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]I guess Im running out time with all this, but I'm in for finding & fixing this ongoing complex series of net framework & upgrades to be able to install / run program software once again. I will have to try your srceen shot m.n.fw install pattern & see what happens. Microsoft has alot of the XP service packs & other updates downloads which I have downloaded earler that are ready for action Strange also, that on my Acer Vista PC after a reinstall earlier has a similar problem saying I need 3.5 ps3 to be able to install program software too ! Since Vista still has windows update option my PC has installed everything up to 3.5 sp1 ,but will not install ANYMORE net frameworks after that ? I throwing one stone to knock down two microsoft net framework issues being one for XP & Vista Just follow the advice given and install all of them 1 at a time... Quote Since Vista still has windows update option my PC has installed everything up to 3.5 sp1 ,but will not install anymore net frameworks after that ? Windows Update does not install new versions of .NET, it will only update existing versions. Only certain versions can run the software written for other versions of Windows. You have to install any other versions you want/need through other means- either as part of another install or yourself. update: I have downlloaded most every net framework from 1.0,1.1,2.0,3.0,3.5,4.0 which was for .x86 & XP sp1 to sp3, but was able to install 1.0,1.1 hotfix no standalone versions avalible that I could see ? I could not get any of the 2.0 Net FWorks to install, but I do have a Microsoft N.FWorks combined 2.0,3.0,3.5 sp1 set-up version. I tried to install this combined 2,3,3.5 sp1,but got an alert prompt needing to downlaod some other runtime version for it to install ? I have 3 runtime versions 2005, 2008,2010 C++ already installed , but do I need a newer version maybe too ? I don't how I got in Windows 10 section hope that dose not slow this thread down on finding my net framework issues Quote from: BC_Programmer on July 23, 2016, 09:35:21 PM Only certain versions can run the software written for other versions of Windows. Correction: I meant to say "other versions of .NET" here, not Windows. Let's start here: Quote but while trying to installing most any applications, exe's , ATI catalyliist display control I will get a prompt message that I need to update my service packs & XP updates too Run one of the affected programs and provide the *exact* error message you receive. eg. ATI Catalyst Control Center. The ATI C.C. prompt appears (only) at start-up says, I need 2.0 framework to use ATI Catalyist Control go to microsoft download site then install. Option: Could I just purchase a Ebay new XP professinal sp2 upgrade disc to bring most all the OS updates back for my XP PC to work correctly once again ? I'm using this XP Media Ctr.Edition online as I type ths message thinking It will work without a browser that still supports XP but found out there is more to it than just getting online. This XP here was to be used for playing 2000-11"gameplay PC games & nothing much more than that. I have two other Vista PC's at the ready, but was hoping to try to update this XP to where it can install software & play once again The message says "I need 2.0 framework to use ATI catalyist Control go to microsoft download site then install." Somehow I doubt that.Yes,might be hard to believe ,but I see it at every start up just after the desktop loads then, I close it or ok it after. Spent alot of time trying to install any or all XP related framework HotFix's,set-up's,updates 2.0-4.0,SP1-3 many types of Runtimes that I download from free Microsoft earlier. I tried trial & error install pattern method. Till I came to finally came to install the Net framework 4.0 Sp3 which my performance ID shows that I have Vista SP3 now ! Whats hard to believe is that the ATI Catalyst Control Center start up prompt reads, needs 2.0 net framework download from Microsoft site to run ATI Catalyst Control Ctr. still ! This XP sure runs well ,but I still need to test whats important to be able to install & run older Gameplay games in single mode. Being able to go online is just icing on the this XP cake Well what I wanted was the exact error message you received, rather than a paraphrasing of such. Though I was able to google it to find the specific error. ATI Catalyst Control Center appears to require Framework 1.1 in addition to Framework 2.0. (Based on some searches) Offline redistributable for 1.1 is available here. Note: I have an XP System setup for much the same purpose, which as it has an ATI Graphics Card, also uses ATI Catalyst Control center and the .NET Framework installations gave me no trouble. (I think I installed 1.1 immediately as it is on the Windows XP disc) |

Solve : Running same software on 2 different computers? |
Answer» Hi, I think this was written before programs needed to be installed. I have copied it from one computer to another for years and never had any problem. I don't understand how I can copy it to one computer and it works - the other identical computer it doesn't.The maker of the program has the source code3and could tell you why that happens. But if you do not use a new current version of their software, they have no motivation to teach you how it works. I think I already said that. For less that $15 you will get a new copy. If you use the program for any purpose, even educational, you have to buy a license to use it on another computer. Only the FBI can get way with BREAKING the law. I used to keep my C drive in a removable tray so I could take it home and work there. As computers were upgraded I would just slot the drive into the new one. Surely this is only one use. Quote from: geoffl on July 26, 2016, 10:31:21 PM I used to keep my C drive in a removable tray so I could take it home and work there. As computers were upgraded I would just slot the drive into the new one. Surely this is only one use.Yes, that does sound like only one instance of the program. Without the documentation not tell you want polices the company has about using more than one instance of the program. A few yes ago the owners of software used secret methods to prevent people of reselling software soothers. When you buy software you only buy the right to use it on one computer. Also, Microsoft has been very o active in prevention of software piracy. The inner details of methods used are seldom published t to the public. There may be a hidden file that must o be present to make the program work. Therefore, when you copy the hidden file might not be sent to the other PC. One example is a zero byte file that also hidden. In some cases the copy program ignores zero byte files. Of course, I can not help you with any effort to circumvent this feature of the original program. That is why I just recommend you buy another copy. In previous request like this from others, I have had the gut felling the the person asking is a professional pirate and wants to make hundreds of copies and resell them with the free information I might provide. Especially so when the price of the product is very reasonable for commercial use. ** I trust you do understand why I can not give you any more help on this. ** For non-commercial use there are many free programs to print labels. I am very much against piracy of any form. I work in the music BUSINESS and this is every where. If people can't make a buck out of their creations we won't have any. I just can't understand - the same set of files - two identical PC's one works 1 does not. The 15-20 dollars is not an issue. I would just like to know if it is some setting on one PCOK. Without the documentation and install CD, it would;d be hard to guess. As mentioned earlier, software companies have secret methods of protecting software. What settings Microsoft has recently put into Windows updates is not fully disclosed. In current versions of Windows all programs must be registered internally with the Windows operating system. This can include a SSL certificate that can be traced back to the copyright holder. If you wish to circumvent this, presumably for a legitimate reason, you need to manually make Windows accept the program and skip the warning about security. Sorry, I can not remember how this is done. ** If the program has a install CD, this is not needed. That is why I recommend getting a new copy of the p or a few dollars. In Installer makes sure all the settings are correct and the program is accepted by Windows. That has been true of most Windows versions for some time. ** I was notable to find the right article. What version of "Labels Unlimited" are we dealing with here? Quote from: Geek-9pm on July 27, 2016, 09:32:44 AM In current versions of Windows all programs must be registered internally with the Windows operating system. This can include a SSL certificate that can be traced back to the copyright holder.Programs do not need to be "registered internally" with Windows. Nor is there any requirement regarding "SSL Certificates". Executables can be signed but signed executables do not have any protection features- it's in place so you can be sure the executable wasn't tampered with since it was signed by the publisher. Quote you need to manually make Windows accept the program and skip the warning about security. Sorry, I can not remember how this is done. ** "Labeler caused a general protection fault in module LUW.EXE at 000F-006E" is not a warning about security. The Error message makes me think this might be a 16-bit application, as 32-bit application crashes of the same form would present a "LUW.EXE has stopped working" type of dialog. Quote I have another 10 year old XP computer which has been running this for 10 years. Yesterday it started telling me the same thingThis is the interesting bit we've all missed so far- the otherwise working install suddenly stopped working and gave the same error message. Is it possible you changed some configuration options or other settings with the program on the XP machine, and then copied it to the new system? |

Solve : Drop down menus not stopping open? |
Answer» We've just installed Windows 10 on our laptop. Problem is when using the internet (especially using Firefox) the drop down menus (for FAVOURITES or history for example) won't stay OPEN when we try to select something. They just close before we have chance to CLICK on what we want. Any IDEAS? I read somewhere that I should untick "Use hardware acceleration when available", which I have but that doesn't seem to have made any difference. |

Solve : Switching between keyboard layouts? |
Answer» (My W10 came already installed on a new PC; it is not an upgrade.) I believe Windows only stores 2 settings you can switch between which means your stuck with doing the 3rd manually i'm afraid.Patio, I was thinking that. Microsoft has a thing called... Multilingual User Interface Which must mean only two at time. Quote The MUI technology is covered by an international[citation needed] patent titled "Multilingual User Interface for an Operating System" (US Patent number: 6252589). The inventors are Bjorn C. Rettig, Edward S. Miller, GREGORY Wilson, and Shan Xu.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multilingual_User_Interface The limit of only two is not explicitly stated. My guess is that no third party can touch it. There are some patents involved. I can't find the option to change the key setting for "Change Keyboard Layout"; I was able to setup 2 users with several input languages and two keyboard layouts each and then a third and all the shortcuts I was able to configure for each worked fine. Left Alt+Shift was for changing the Input Language, but the keyboard layout options had to be set individually. Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 27, 2016, 12:49:23 PM No. The issue, or something like it, has been identified over a year ago. Many thanks for those suggestions. Sorry for going back to something so old. I thought I had adequately researched before posting but it seems I hadn't. Re. 1: I tried all those things (which wasn't easy as some were not where stated) but none helped. Re. 2: I don't have an Apple machine. Re. 3: If I can't get this one user's account to work like the others on this PC and my XP one, I'll have a look into that. Quote from: patio on June 27, 2016, 01:26:13 PM I believe Windows only stores 2 settings you can switch between which means your stuck with doing the 3rd manually i'm afraid. Thanks. I'm not sure I fully understand. I have only two keyboard settings (German and Croatian). The problem is that, at the moment I can't switch between them. Quote from: BC_Programmer on June 27, 2016, 10:24:10 PM I can't find the option to change the key setting for "Change Keyboard Layout"; I was able to setup 2 users with several input languages and two keyboard layouts each and then a third and all the shortcuts I was able to configure for each worked fine. Left Alt+Shift was for changing the Input Language, but the keyboard layout options had to be set individually. Thanks. The option is here: Control Panel, Language, Advanced settings then, in about the middle of the screen, Change language bar hot keys. In the next window, click on Change Key Sequence on the Advanced Key Settings tab. There you can set the Key Sequences to... a) Switch Input Language. I have only one so I leave that at Not Assigned. b) Switch Keyboard Layout. As mentioned in my original post, I've tried all three options but, as soon as I click on OK, it REVERTS to Not Assigned. Thanks, It doesn't seem to be a limitation of the OS as I was able to setup the 3 test accounts I had with various languages, and a few layouts for each language. Unfortunately (as I'm sure you also discovered) I can't find any information on the issue. One thing I did find is that apparently Lenovo systems somehow have the language options messed up and can have problems like this. I don't know if your system is a Lenovo or not. Not a solution really but apparently Windows Key+Space presents a menu to choose from the available language options. That might provide a workaround at least. As BC said, you may have to do a workaround. This is for reference and does not have a concise solution to the issue. Multilingual User Interface - Major items in Google search. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/327773 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/927776 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/926141 https://kb.plesk.com/en/6432 http://www.howtogeek.com/189270/alternative-keyboard-layouts-explained-dvorak-colemak-and-whether-you-should-care/ The above shows that the layout can be changed without the need for a language pack. Also, third-party programs could be used if need be. Of major importance is the issue of Uni-Code. Going from ASCII to Uni-Code is a big thing. I don't think any of those links or information are particularly pertinent here, to Windows 10's multi-language and keyboard layout options. They are clearly having zero issues setting up and using multiple languages and multiple keyboard layouts. It is the configurable shortcut that allows switching between keyboard layouts that doesn't appear to function properly. Quote from: BC_Programmer on June 28, 2016, 09:31:12 AM I don't think any of those links or information are particularly pertinent here, to Windows 10's multi-language and keyboard layout options. Yes, that's basically it "BC". Just a couple of points of clarification, if I may, just in case they help someone to help me: 1) I have only one language set (no switching necessary). 2) I didn't have any issues setting up and using multiple keyboard layouts on the first user I created some time ago and nor, as far as I know, did the shop who made the initial installation and sold me the PC. The problem is only with the third user which I created recently. By the way, just in case there was something wrong with that third user, I today created a fourth. I've got the same problem.Pardon me. I am slow to get it. So the problem is only the +issue of having a full set of shortcut keys? You can have even four layouts, but no easy way to go back and fourth? Does the user normally need to go back and forth quickly? How quick? A menu is not acceptable? Toggles? Is there a three or four key press sequence that will get there? Can any of the F keys be used? EDIT: Here I am using Windows 10 Home. It lets me add a number of the layouts that are not uni code keyboard layouts for many European and even eastern keyboards. But there is no shortcut key. Only a menu from the task bar. Is that what you get? Can you select from a menu? Just in case anyone ELSE has or gets this problem, I have found a workaround (I don't consider it a solution): It seems that Windows has a default keyboard switching shortcut: Ctrl+Shift (NOT Windows+Space, as stated on some sites). By using that combination, my new users can switch keyboard layouts. I then went back to the first two users, where I can change the switching method, and changed that from my preferred LeftAlt+Shift to Ctrl+Shift. At least all users can now change keyboard layouts and use the same key combination to do so. It's just a shame they all have to change from the combination they are used to from the previous Windows, as the facility to choose the switching method works for only some users. This must be a bug! (If anyone knows differently, do please correct me:)STOP PRESS: I have now found a solution!! That is, for those who are not afraid to edit the registry. Please see the attached. The configuration shown was for one of my two original users, who could switch keyboards using my preferred method of LeftAlt+Shift. I edited the registry for the newer users to match that configuration and now they too can switch that way. Note that the third-level folder "Toggle" did not even exist! Although it is only the item "Layout Hotkey" which defines the switching method, all four items have to exist and, probably, be set as shown. Thanks to everyone who tried to help. Solve : Is it possible to recover the Hard-disk space utilised by Recovery Disk(D:)?? |
Answer» Hello Members! note:As Allan stated with good image backups of the system it doesn't matter what HP says... Quote from: Geek-9pm on July 20, 2016, 09:40:03 AM The link in the above post has this warning: That doesn't take into account the use of 3rd party software such as I recommended. Having said that, sure it makes sense to create backup media as an additional resource. The OP says he wants more space. That would suggesthe is a new user and does not understand the the best way to get more spaceist to get a new hard drive. The post would salso uggest taht the OP is a novice. If that is tgrue, rather than tell him how to format a hard drive he needs to learn about backups and recovery methods. The recovery partion is a esential tool and shouopd not be removed by anew user unless there is a importgant reason to do so. Example: If the new user buys a larger hard drive and lones ti old drive to the new drive hewill have morfe space available. In that case there is no need to format the originaldirve. On AMAZON, and other places, a 100 pack of DVD discs is about $20.That is enough to make backups of everything the use has . After making backups, hecan redujce the numberof large seldom used files on the hartd drive and free up space. The purpose of the forum is to help people. That was and still is my intent. All of what you stated is correct....1/2 of it is speculation.Dear Members! Thanks for the wholehearted replies! :-) But kindly let me know on how to BOOT from a USB or a DVD? I intend to install a LINUX variant alongside my Windows OS, & threfore what steps do I need to follow to accomplish the same? Secondly, for all those who have recently migrated to Win 10 from Win 8 or 8.1....is it possible for this Group to ALSO backup Win10 on a USB Key? I have learnt from someone that USB backup of an OS is a one-time process, & therefore who already possess Win 8 backup on a USB...will these be at a "Privilege" to also backup Win 10 on a USB as a one-time process? I appreciate your Patience..& suggestions will be sincerely appreciated. Thank you.Dear Members! I would also like to point out that Recovery Image DISKS are often characterized by an abundance of CRAPWARE! In order to unleash the true power of System resources & to experience Win OS in its purest form prompted me to ask for a Credible method to format the entire Hard-Drive & then install Win 8 OS afresh! During the Sytem BOOT, what Key do I need to constantly press to choose USB/CD/DVD as a first Boot device? Kindly suggest. |

I don't think that Ashampoo caused the problem as I have been using this screen grabber for some time now and it hasn't caused me any problems in the past. Solve : FastStone Capture scrolling? |
Answer» I am having difficulty with scrolling using FastStone Capture in Windows 10. ProsSo the slow capture may be inherent in the program. Do you need this for a very serious project? Have you thought about hardware capture? I have the latest version of FastStone Capture which I downloaded against payment a few days ago. I have been using it on Windows 10, never used it on Windows 8. It has always scrolled perfectly and efficiently. However, over the last two days the scrolling stops abruptly after scrolling only the first two pages. I hear a click on the laptop and scrolling ceases immediately. This has never HAPPENED to me before. Thank you again for your kindness and patience. Guzeppi |

Solve : Windows 7 or Windows 10? Do you like 10 or you wish to return to say 7?? |
Answer» Greetings! I ended up running Never 10 to all my Windows 7 systems. Wow. Thank you for the quick Reply. I like windows 7 a LOT more. However whats pushing me to 10 is ONLY and ONLY the DirectX12. Granted my MSI R6870 isnt what it used to be but in 10 i got a max of 80FPS in GTA V which to me on an old card is impressive. Averaged around 50-60FPS min was i want to say 40. That reason and the fact that since i do some tech work having 10 would be good. But I HATE The constant updates the control over you all the other BS> I got in the Windows 10 Insider program long before the official launch, and installed it on an oldish Dell Core 2 Duo laptop (2GB RAM 8 GB HD), that had XP. It was my only (free) chance at a modern Windows install on that machine. Everything worked fine straight away and it seemed noticeably more snappy. I have been letting the builds update ever since and I am very happy with it. About 1 year ago I bought a new desktop PC: Spec as bought: Gigabyte GA-H81M-DS2V motherboard Intel i7 4790 cpu 16 GB RAM (2 x Crucial CT102464BA160B.C16) 1 TB WD Blue WD10EZEX-00BN5A0 HDD Windows 8.1 Pro downgraded to Windows 7 Pro (64 bit) Added by me: 120 MB Samsung Evo 840 SSD Upgrade after 2 months to Windows 10 Professional 64 bit I was already well used to Windows 7 having used it for 5 years in another PC. I found Windows 10 a great improvement and continue to do so. I would never go back. I agree with ST. I have two new systems that came with 10 and two others I upgraded from 7 to 10 (all pro version). When all is said and done it's just an OS, but I'm very pleased with it and have never even thought about reverting. Quote from: Allan on July 03, 2016, 04:00:18 AM When all is said and done it's just an OSThe guy I sit next to at work is buying a new desktop PC and he asked me anxiously if he could get one with Windows 7 because "that's what I'm used to". I gave him my honest opinion, which is that, like you say, it's just Windows. You get a task bar at the bottom of the screen with a start button on the left end and a clock on the right, and you just run the programs you want. (in his case, mostly Firefox and MS Office 2007).Yes, other than look and feel (which when all is said and done can pretty much be reconfigured to the user's taste) I never understood all of the discussions that surround which version of Windows to use.I am old enough to remember the angst and terror some people seemed to have at the introductions of Windows 95, 98, XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 and 10. In each case people said the old one (yes, even Windows 3.11 for Workgroups) was better and they'd never learn how to use the new one. I suspect some said the same for each one. Incidentally I saw a funny cartoon in a magazine the other day. It SHOWED a bunch of Luddites in the 19th century smashing the new fangled machines that were putting artisans out of work, and another man addressing them saying "My steam powered machine smasher can do the work of ten men!" Maybe my performance issue with Windows 10 is because of my hardware combination not tapping into DirectX 12. The article below suggests that DirectX 12 will theoretically be so much more than 11 and I am running on DirectX 10 for gaming. So maybe Windows 10 with DirectX 10 is not so great, but Windows 7 is perfect with DirectX 10, or it comes down to nVidia's driver for Windows 7 and my video card is better than the driver they made available for Windows 10 with my nvidia GTX 260 video card. http://www.pcworld.com/article/2900814/tested-directx-12s-potential-performance-leap-is-insane.htmlI have machines running Win 7, Win 8.1 and Win 10. I have no compulsion to change the OS on any of them. Like SalmonTrout, I've been in the Insider's Program for Win 10 since it's inception so have been using Win 10 for nearly 2 years. I have one machine running the very latest build which is one of the last before the upcoming Anniversary Update which is scheduled to be released on Aug 2nd. As much as I like Win 10, I don't feel compelled to upgrade all of my machines to it since, after all, it's just an OS.I have it in a dual-boot setup with 7... Seems i still use 7 more often though...My assistant is a triple boot Windows XP Windows 7 and Windows 10. There is one specific program that I like very much and it only works on Windows 10 or on my Android tablet. There's no way to make it work on Windows 7. Doing a triple boot installation brings its own problems. It's much more difficult to do maintenance on a computer with 3 operating systems.Like Salmon I've been fiddling with Win10 on some of my systems since some of the earlier Insider builds. I put the "Fast" insider build on my old desktop and the standard RTM on my "budget" build system. A few weeks ago I upgraded the laptop (Thinkpad T550) which I tend to use as a work machine, and it's been fine and the only issue was I had to repair Visual Studio 2015. I think the advantages of Windows 10 are overstated, particularly given the regressions in some of the basic functionality (eg. VPN network connection), but it's not unilaterally worse by any means, and most of the things people are concerned about can be disabled. The "Rolling release" where new versions of Windows are effectively provided as an update going forward is interesting though of course raises the question of how Microsoft makes money from it and whether in some way customers become the product. |

Solve : Sizing handles and JPEG's in MS Word? |
Answer» I hope I am in the right place. When I import a jpeg into MS Word, sometimes I GET black sizing handles. When I get such handles, I cannot use Insert Caption, and I cannot Group either with a text box or with a jpeg that has open sizing handles. Jpeg's with open sizing handles seem to work properly, and the caption "STICKS" to the picture. I can't see any difference between 1 jpeg and another. Windows 10, Word 2010. Still working on it, but what is the significance of a black sizing handle? I have searched Microsoft Office Help and also Google, but so far no luck. Does anyone know what gives? Many thanks! MattThe filled-in sizing handles are for an embedded object, which you will often get from pasting from another PROGRAM (like an image editor). For the "Open" handles you want to insert an actual picture using Insert->Picture INSTEAD of pasting.Splendid, thanks! (I dragged them from a File Explorer window, but I will use Insert hereafter.) I simply cd not find that information anywhere. Rgds, Matt |

So, for instance, I would type the word instance and it would always come up " instancee" Under warranty tech had me reload the file that controlled typing but the problem still existed. I purchased an external Bluetooth keyboard thinking the key itself might be sticking. Problem persisted. Gateway had me update to win 10. Problem still existed. But it doesn't explain that it happened on the laptop keyboard...and an external.Yes it does. Some people can not type on a cheese keyboard. The older IBM type heavery duty mechanical wonders did not have the cheese problem. From their own post, Many keys also double up when they use dictation software and when they use the on-screen keyboard. This suggests a software problem, as both work via Virtual key presses which will be affected by software. Most laptops include hotkey utilities which could be sending repeat Virtual Key events, for example. Best way to check is to remove any and all key-related utilities. |

Solve : Windows 10 Upgrade Hangs? |

Answer» Dell Inspiron 15R N5110. Windows 7 Home Premium 64BIT. BIOS updated to version A11, drivers and programs updated. I used the Media Creation Tool and chose Upgrade this PC. The upgrade gets to the "Checking for updates..." part and hangs at 22%. I left it at 22% for almost 2 hours yesterday afternoon before trying to close it out. Solve : Windows 10 - Downgrade back to 7 after 30 days? |
Answer» Just wanted to share that I was surprised that I was able to downgrade back to 7 on my one computer. I recently bought a AMD FX-8300 3.3Ghz 8-core for a system that had just a Athlon II x2 215 2.7Ghz because I wanted an additional system to my AMD FX-8350, but one that was a little more power efficient and cheaper, so I got the FX-8300 for $119.99 for it. I rolled back my notebook after more than 30 days and it didn't take any special tricks. I just hit Recovery and there it was. Depends on how early on your Win 10 was when you installed...the above scenario in my link didn't start happening til approx 5-6 months from the initial upgrade release i believe.Crazier things have happened to me with Win10. Upgraded Win7-64bit Home Premium & it automatically upgraded & activated to Pro not Home. Supposedly, it should never have even installed Pro over Home. Don't know how or why but it's been that way for almost a year. Activation servers were very bad then & still have problems now; maybe why the 30-day rollback doesn't always hold true? It could be the 30-day timer is on the activation servers & not on the local machine. If you leave the computer on for a while, then you might not be able to ROLL back.Good point.Further Evidence: As part of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update and starting with this Insider Preview build (14371), we’re introducing the Activation Troubleshooter that will help you address most commonly encountered activation issues on Genuine Windows devices including those caused by hardware changes. https://blogs.windows.com/windowsexperience/2016/06/22/announcing-windows-10-insider-preview-build-14371-for-pc/Nice find...Thanx. Quote We’ve received feedback from Windows Insiders who have run into activation issues on Genuine Windows devices after making changes to device hardware such as replacing a hard drive or motherboard. Interesting.... in the past on systems that motherboards were replaced on microsoft gave me troubles with activation. I kept the same box with the license key on outside affixed to panel, the original motherboard died. I replaced motherboard and installed Windows XP Home back to system and when activating online i got message that i needed to contact microsoft. Called the number to activate Windows and talked with some guy in India. He asked questions and I answered. I think I gave too much info when I said that the motherboard died and I replaced it, as for I was told that Microsoft will not grant an activation of the windows key because the license associated on that box is associated with the CPU and Motherboard as a whole. So when the motherboard died and I replaced it, it was not allowed to have the activation. I ended up having to buy a new Windows XP Home SP2 and install fresh. I wonder of this means that they have changed their stance on motherboard swaps where its the same computer box that the OS was issued with and they are now allowing motherboard swapping. I have one such computer that is on Windows 7 32-bit and it refuses to upgrade to 10 because it doesnt pass the hardware compatibility test. If they would allow a motherboard swap and Windows 10 activation that would be cool, BUT I have a strong feeling they wont allow it. |

Solve : long time for Windows 10 to boot? |
Answer» Greetings... Remove the HDD & see what happens. That's certainly not gonna tell him what his boot time is...If you have lots of money, you can by basic parts and see if that fixes the issue. Also, cloning the partition and OS from any source does not guarantee genuine copies of the OS as it may not completely give you your files, incorrectly copy your files, or give you a bootleg that doesn't boot. Also, as a previous comment said, removing the HDD may solve the problem as it could be corrupted, damaged, improperly configured / placed, and so on. also, from what your saying, it seems like you get to the login screen, it just goes blank. You might want to run an antivirus / registry / disk cleaner program(s) to see if your computer has bad files. Also, if you suspect the problem is the two GPU's and graphics card(s). Then you might want to take them out to see if your computer runs with the bare bones. Please ignore the above post in its entirety. |

Solve : Cumulative Update a Real Pain? |
Answer» There is a cumulative Windows update that appears in each monthly set of updates and if I don't catch it in time it prevents three different Windows 10 systems in my house from booting and I have to use True Image to restore. This has been going on for about 5 months now and I know there are a lot of folks with the same problem. You'd think Microsoft would pull or fix the update. The problem is getting it downloaded, not the update itself. I've installed it on 6 machines with no issues. Perhaps I have the timeline incorrect. In my mind, the update is downloaded, and when that download is completed, it is verified and then installs. (if the download fails it throws up an error and you have to retry the download) In this case, it needs to reboot to complete the installation. It doesn't seem very likely that the issue with systems being unable to boot is related to a problem downloading the update. Quote It doesn't seem very likely that the issue with systems being unable to boot is related to a problem downloading the update. Actually it does explain why systems aren't able to boot...unfinished rollups/updates are the most common cause of fully healthy systems having boot issues... Quote from: patio on May 27, 2016, 06:19:44 PM Actually it does explain why systems aren't able to boot...unfinished rollups/updates are the most common cause of fully healthy systems having boot issues... Windows Update downloads all the updates first, and then starts installing them, as far as I can determine. This would suggest issues installing the updates aren't related to the download except in the case that they completely fail to download at all (eg. the server issues CC noted), but in that case, it seems it would only result in the update not installing at all since the download can't complete. Of course if it somehow works such that the download is in progress and it starts installing while it is still grabbing data for that installation from the server, then I've assumed excessive COMPETENCE on the part of Microsoft. The update APPEARS to install normally and then says "100% installed" after reboot, and hangs there. However, it does give me an idea - later today I'll try to install from safe mode and see what happens.Well, here's what I decided to do. I upgraded the problematic system from W10 Home to W10 Pro using the universal Microsoft update activation code. The process was not straightforward because as part of the upgrade Windows also installs all available Windows updates (including cumulative updates) and that means the system would not boot after the upgrade. I had to enable legacy boot command options so I could get into safe mode, uninstall the one update that was installed today (it was NOT the cumulative update listed above, but a different update which did not say "cumulative update" in its Programs & Features description, but IS a cumulative update - KB3140743), hide the cumulative update listed in the "show-hide" applet (which, btw, was the original one listed in this thread, not the one I just deleted), and then reboot. The system then booted nominally, allowing me to activate W10 with an old (and of course legitimate and no longer in use) W7 Ultimate activation code. Using the gpedit snap-in I disabled automatic updates and then created an image with True Image, rebooted, and everything now seems fine. Now all of my systems are running W10 Pro with auto-updates disabled. YEA!!!!!Interesting point...so i allowed 2 updates last eve to see if it did work that way. At 1st net activity was steady...then slowed...disk activity started. But about 1/2 way thru activity was pretty consistent on both so...no definitive conclusion on my end. |

Solve : I cannot eyefinity 3 Monitor (Dell 22'')? |
Answer» I cannot eyefinity 3 Monitor (Dell 22'') AMD Eyefinity is the brand name for AMD products which support multi-monitor setups by integrating multiple (up to six) display controllers on one GPU.[1] AMD Eyefinity was introduced with the Radeon HD 5000 Series "Evergreen" in September 2009And it goes on to say... Quote AMD Eyefinity supports a maximum of 2 non-DisplayPort displays (e.g. HDMI, DVI, VGA, DMS-59, VHDCI) (which AMD calls "legacy output") and up to 6 DisplayPort displays simultaneously using a single graphics card or APU. To feed more than two displays, the additional panels must have native DisplayPort support.[3]You can only have two legacy ports. So the problem is not Windows 10.Windows bashing at it's finest...i doubt he ever had it going in Linux.Maybe he will come back and admit that it was not he, but a friend who had it working with the right monitor interface. Cards like the one mentioned come with cables to adapt to DIFFERENT monitors, including legacy types. One might think he can have three outputs because there are enough connectors. But one has to read the documentation. The AMD card will drive three monitors and more if the monitors are all of the type required. Other combinations are possible, but at least one out of three has to be the new kind of interface. Quote DisplayPort is a DIGITAL display interface developed by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA). The interface is primarily used to connect a video source to a display device such as a computer monitor, though it can also be used to carry audio, USB, and other forms of data. For more pictures... Solve : Is Microsoft getting more pushy with 10? |
Answer» Here is a strange one... Is Microsoft getting more pushy with 10 Yep. Push? Or Shove? A few months back we we given the warning. Updategate: Microsoft is about to make it even harder to opt out of Windows 10 Also: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2016/03/16/windows-10-stop-upgrade/ Quote My own upgrade was fairly straightforward, but I did end up with a no-longer-functional webcam, a soundcard which required uncommonly convoluted manual driver installation, a couple of glitchy games and all my default programs reset to Microsoft’s own applications. Nothing major went wrong, but I still had to spend half a day fiddling, and that’s as someone who broadly knows what they’re doing. For someone less PC-savvy who just clicked the Upgrade button and trusted all will be well, that stuff’s a frightening mountain. This could hurt Microsoft. If not already. I'm of the mind that Win10 is at best a lateral shift from 8.1. Though I suppose that's somewhat off-topic. At this rate it would not surprise me if an automatic update would forcibly update to Windows 10 with no way to cancel it at all. Their approach with KB3035583, the "Get Windows 10" program update, is incredibly sneaky and I would almost suggest malicious, even. Hiding an update will hide all future versions of that update, unless the new one is marked appropriately, in which case, it will appear again. Microsoft has released every new version of the GWX update with that mark; so any user who had hidden the update, will see it again and it will be automatically selected as well. This seems rather user-hostile; if a user, such as myself, has hidden the Get Windows 10 program, then it is not reasonable that any change to that program would change that, as it is the specific purpose of the program- upgrading to Windows 10- that I do not want to have performed on my systems. The presence of advertisements within Windows 10 seems to partly explain why they want to get people onto Windows 10 so badly, considering that in terms of features it is rather lacking. (and usable features, moreso, do NOT get me started on VPN connections...) But besides displaying advertisements, there is also all that SWEET, sweet information they will be gathering about how users use their PCs, what programs they run, for how long, etc. I'm sure there are a lot of interested third parties that would pay for that information. This may be why the Windows 10 EULA explicitly gives Microsoft sole proprietorship over the gathered information- "By accepting this agreement and using the software you agree that Microsoft may collect, use, and disclose the information" EDIT: This is not conspiracy theory stuff here really, as there are certainly loads of perfectly legitimate uses for the gathered information to make various products better, the main concern here (IMO) is that individual users should be able to, at least, opt out of that COLLECTION if they desire. Yesterday PC World did an article on this topic. http://www.pcworld.com/article/3073457/windows/how-microsofts-nasty-new-windows-10-pop-up-tricks-you-into-upgrading.html Quote This morning, the unthinkable happened: My wife, an avowed PC user who long ago swore to never touch an Apple device, started shopping around for a Mac Mini. And it’s all thanks to Windows 10. Or rather, the nasty new way that Microsoft’s tricking Windows 7 and 8 users into automatically updating to Windows 10.Thanks for all the info.. I was curious as to why the big push to 10 so forcibly. It appears that their master plan is coming to light. I have always been under the caution that nothing is free. *Yes some things are, but generally there is a hidden catch to free. Companies dont thrive by giving away product, and so I am more cautious when a company that has up til Windows 10 charged for everything and anything they possibly could giving away the most recent OS for free. I took the upgrade on one of my systems, and that system has been offline for about 6 months. There is no draw to Windows 10 for me. And as BC stated its lacking some features as I also noticed. To me there is nothing special that Windows 10 has that makes me have to have it. Windows 7 does everything I need and all software I have works with it. Plenty of Driver Support for 7 as well. I had a old single-core Celeron M 1.6Ghz laptop that came with Windows 7 on it from prior owner who upgraded it from XP and I figured I might as well upgrade that to Windows 10. Maybe 10 is more efficient and will run better on a celeron M 1.6Ghz laptop. Started the process to upgrade that one and it complained that there was no driver available for Windows 10 for the Chipset, so the Integrated Intel Graphics had no Windows 10 driver support and a result of that, this laptop was blatting for it to be upgraded to 10, but the upgrade refused due to lacking drivers available for that older Intel Chipsets integrated Graphics. I am hoping that after July 2016 the free upgrade annoyances will be killed off by microsoft since, it would be pointless after that point to suggest Windows 10... or would it? It would be quite annoying if it remains and changes to something similar to what they did with Windows XP where it says this OS is out of date... although at least XP had a checkbox to say never remind again.laughing so hard... Windows 3.1 win 10 blat haha I wonder if someone really wrote an old program with support for Windows 3.1 to make this joke or if its just photoshop edit. Quote from: DaveLembke on May 23, 2016, 11:43:11 PM I wonder if someone really wrote an old program with support for Windows 3.1 to make this joke or if its just photoshop edit. I saw some similar images and decided to make this one myself, actually. The ones I've seen are pretty simple and are a basic window with a bit of text. I wanted to make something that looked a bit more similar to the dialog that GWX actually shows. Could have gone as far as the flat-style button but decided I had spent too much time converting files by that point. I used VB3. Of course the program doesn't actually do anything at all, so there was no actual programming involved (or that I had to re-learn). Just had to convert the images to an appropriate format and do a bit of form design. I guess I could have gotten away with just the one image (the background). Though showing the icon when it's minimized is a nice touch. I'm thinking of expanding it to make a simple "retro programming" project based on it where it displays random images and messages from a directory, which would be an interesting topic to WRITE about. Cool! Btw... turned my laptop on and I guess Microsoft is trying to push 10 to this computer too. Cancelled it out. I guess I will have to turn on all Windows 7 systems I own and see which ones have the windows 7 dooms day count down to an attempted forced 10 upgrade. [attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]I run 7 on 2 different PC's...i get no warnings whatsoever... Quote from: PATIO on May 24, 2016, 09:49:52 AM I run 7 on 2 different PC's...i get no warnings whatsoever... Do you have the Win10 GWX updates installed? Not having them installed seems to neatly avoid these issues, it's just a matter of keeping them off which is relatively straightforward (though IMO shouldn't be necessary...) I've been reading about some of my own gripes with Win10 (mostly the Windows Update options, or lack thereof, which even on my secondary systems has successfully wasted my time on a few occasions). And from what I've read, supporters of the change suggest it is for the best- The reasoning seems to rest on this idea that users are all stupid morons and shouldn't be trusted to adjust configuration options. Most of them quote statistics. I liked reading one quote that "80% of all infections are caused by the OS being out of date" which I think they just made up on the spot. Mind you, I have no data to support my own thinking that end-user malware infections tend to come about through Trojan Horse software, rather than through particular OS exploits. If users are allegedly too stupid to be trusted with adjusting their Windows Update options, why are they allowed to adjust any administrator settings like UAC? Why are they even allowed to give admin permission? Clearly the solution is to not give users administrator permission or the ability to configure UAC settings. Instead, in order to protect users, they should be presented with a UAC dialog which provides a phone number for Microsoft and a password prompt, and the user must phone Microsoft and plead their case to demonstrate that they deserve to be given local administrator access on their PC. Quote Btw... turned my laptop on and I guess Microsoft is trying to push 10 to this computer too.I don't have win7 on any of my real systems but I use a program called GWX Control Panel which works for both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. I run it after I run Windows Update (which I can still do since I'm on Win 8.1 *AHEM*) and clean out the various settings Microsoft sneakily changes. (OS Upgrades through Windows Update in particular). There are a few other programs that do basically the same thing, and some will remove the various KB updates Microsoft has pushed through Windows Update that add Telemetry tracking and diagnostics services to WIndows 7 and 8. I'll check both rigs for the offending updates...as i've done since XP i have Win Updates turned to notification only...auto update is dis-abled.Talk about nefarious... Quote The latest, and possibly evillest move (to date) involves making closing an unwanted upgrade popup -- by clicking the x in the top right corner -- the same as agreeing to the upgrade. WOW!!!! This is exactly what I have been doing when I seen pop ups for Win 10 upgrade.. I have been clicking the [X] to get rid of them. Sneaky Sneaky Sneaky Microsoft!!! Well now I have more insight as to WHY this installation of 10 almost happened. I never thought I would have to ever turn off auto updates to notification only, but Microsoft has really gone too far with this issue. Gonna check into BC's GWX Control Panel when I get home from work too. It sounds interesting and useful. Thanks everyone on this subject. Btw when checking out other systems one other one wanted to do the Win 10 upgrade to and killed it off on that one too. |

Solve : windows update will not work? |

Answer» Hi, I tried catalogue.update and Firefox says the site is insecure (in terms of configuration). Am I missing something ? Edge/Explorer should be used for Windows updates. If I use F.F. I get the same error.I go to 'settings' 'update and security' 'windows update'. it says 'updates are avaliable'. under details it says 'waiting for download ' and has said this for days. Quote from: patio on May 18, 2016, 08:25:17 PM Hi Andy... Yes Patio, the time is accurate. The machine runs great, unlike my Win7 Pro box, which has update issues of its own (hence my being drawn to this thread in the first place). Y'all have fun with this. I'm going to try a different direction for my issue |

Solve : Asus laptop issues.? |
Answer» I tried resetting my laptop to factory settings and it told me at 70% it couldn't complete and to put in my password, so I did. Shortly after it shut down and tried to reboot. Now im forever stuck at the beginning ASUS logo at start-up and it wont load into the OS what so ever. The BIOS will start and it shows my hard drive is being detected and everything else seems to be working hardware wise. I have tried starting the factory RESET again bu spamming F9 at STARTUP but that doesn't seem to be working either. Any suggestions on what I should do ? Microsoft has clearly attempted to make SURE that all BASES are covered as far as installation options are concerned. Although the company started initiating pre-downloads of the operating system to registered PCs approximately 24-hours before the official launch in late July last year, it does appear to RECOGNIZE that some consumers would require an official ISO image of the Windows 10 platform whenever the need to manually install or reinstall the OS on a formatted machine arises. The ISO image will of course allow for the creation of a bootable USB flash drive or DVD, to serve as an installation source. It is legit. Microsoft will know if you cheat. |

Solve : Deactivate windows 10? |
Answer» I have windows 10 on my macbook pro. However IM selling my machine and WISH to deactivate the key so i can activate it on my replacement machine. The key is a windows 8 key that i had boughtIf this was a full retail key you can follow the instructions here to remove it from the machine you are going to sell, and install it on another machine http://www.howtogeek.com/124286/how-to-uninstall-your-windows-product-key-before-you-sell-your-pc/ Or here http://www.thewindowsclub.com/deactivate-uninstall-windows-product-key Sell it without the HDD...or remove yours and put a blank one in... I've sold many 2nd hand PC's thru the years...that's how i do it. Quote from: patio on April 24, 2016, 02:34:29 PM Sell it without the HDD...or remove yours and put a blank one in... Quote from: Salmon Trout on April 24, 2016, 01:21:58 PM If this was a full retail key you can follow the instructions here to remove it from the machine you are going to sell, and install it on another machine Thank you very much. I used something similar but same idea... "You can deauthorize windows on your computer by reverting it to trial mode This is how to do it press Windows key + X click Command Prompt (Admin) at the command prompt, type: slmgr.vbs -upk hit Enter, this will uninstall the product key from the computer and set it back to trial mode, you can now USE it on another computer.." Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 24, 2016, 12:27:10 PM I may be wrong, but I do not think Microsoft allows you to remove Windows from one machine and transfer it to another. Not for an upgrade from an OEM version. When you upgrade, the new version now becomes part of the original OEM license. This was a retail code that our school provides our students. Obviously a mac does not sell with a windows key. Nor will i be selling it with my windows key THANKS FOR THE HELP EVERYONE Quote from: comda on April 24, 2016, 04:05:28 PM This is a Macbook Pro with a retina. Im not tearing it apart. Well excuse me... LOL Just saying, its one of apples tight thin ones, so that isnt really an option.. But still thanks for the help Patio. Before selling it I'd follow the instructions here to fully wipe the machine and install a clean copy of OS X. http://osxdaily.com/2014/12/14/reinstall-os-x-mac-internet-recovery/. When doing that make sure you go into disk utility and remove any Windows disk partitions by repartitioning the disk to a SINGLE partition. This will remove all your data including the Windows install and set up a fresh copy of OS X for the next owner. You don't explicitly need to remove the product key, wiping the machine will prevent the next owner from using the Windows install leaving you free to use the key elsewhere. Worst case if you move the key around too much is that it will no longer activate online and instead you'll have to activate using the automated phone system although I have never had this fail even on copies I've reinstalled dozens of times. Quote from: patio on April 24, 2016, 02:34:29 PM Sell it without the HDD...or remove yours and put a blank one in...Those rMBPs use very high end mSATA or M.2 PCIe SSDs - They are very expensive to replace, selling a machine without one will knock a huge amount off of a still pretty valuable system. |

Solve : Windows 10 System and Compressed Memory usage? |
Answer» I haven't been able to find much on this from a few Google searched, mostly people complaining that they're seeing this process using lots of CPU or disk. I'm aware of what it does and why it's useful, but what I'm curious about is why suddenly this process on my system is using almost 10GB of RAM? Previously, it would be barely noticeable, around 200MB at most. Another consideration is that it's nothing like SuperFetch- it compresses data that would have otherwise been paged to disk, which means that you'd need many applications open to the point where you'd start seeing swapping before it would start "paging" data by compressing it in a separate area of memory. So maybe you've not typically had enough applications open for that to happen, or when you have, you've not been watching Task Manager quite so closely (since presumably with that many programs open you've got more important things to do). That's what I don't quite understand - at various times whilst having task manager open I've had a few VMs open allocating 4GB of RAM to each, I've had Firefox eating 2GB of RAM, and I've played various games, at no point have I seen this spike in compressed memory usage, until earlier today. I saw it had dropped to around 6GB earlier, just checked again now and it's way back down at more usual levels, currently 370MB. It's not like I was running short on RAM, I mean right now I've got 28 threads of a BOINC project running which are using between 3-800MB of RAM each, Firefox is using 1GB, plus everything else, and I'm at 21GB used out of 32GB...higher total usage than earlier, when 10GB was being used by this system process but my total usage was 16GB, so surely now would be when I'd EXPECT to see more compressed memory, not less? I don't know, my experiences don't seem to match up with a lot of what I've been reading, and I only have this system running Windows 10 available to me so nothing else to test on unless I spin up some VMs. As I said, I'm not worried about this as such, just curious to find out what triggered this earlier. I'll probably try and keep a CLOSER eye on it and see if I can make it happen again, perhaps I'll get some logging set up and see what I can find out.Huh, and this morning after playing a game, it's at nearly 14GB of compressed memory. 18.5GB "in use", 12.9GB "standby" and 1.1GB "not in use". |
