Solve : Any Video causes all to freeze? |
Answer» I have a problem where, whilst i watch a video, my computer locks down completely and won't let me do anything at all. Currently it has happened three times for me all on different locations (Windows Media player, YOUTUBE and Another Website) so I doubt that being the problem. It only happens after a while and I'm afraid it will happen while i work on something more important than a video. Did you try running a video in Safe Mode? No I have not as it does not happen instantly after i turn the video on. It seems to occur at random and there is no warning for when it happensPlease tell me the size of the hard drive and how much free space you have. Please try this: Open Windows Task Manager and check which process is spiking.I suggest that you check your video card if it is working properly.Quote from: trym392 on January 04, 2015, 12:24:21 PM I have a problem where, whilst i watch a video, my computer locks down completely and won't let me do anything at all. It only happens after a while and I'm afraid it will happen while i work on something more important than a video. 1) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)? 2) What do you mean you checked drivers in device manager without much luck? 3) Please go to the website of the manufacturer of your display adapter and download and install the latest driver (if this is a laptop, get the driver from the website of the computer manufacturer)Quote from: Allan on January 06, 2015, 05:42:06 AM
1: I got the computer for Christmas and have been using it since. The problem popped up last week or so and i haven't really had any other problems. 2: I got a tip about checking if all the driver worked properly and to try and update them 3:I'll try this immediately If you just got it at Christmas i'd return it under warranty... Solve : How to keep from being forced to update to 8.1?? |
Answer» I have auto updates turned off and yet I keep getting pop-ups to update to 8.1. Now I've finally gotten the one that doesn't give me an option to say no. How do I stop 8.1 from being forced on me? I'm stuck with 8.You said it. MS does not want to support windows 8. The objective now is to push Windows 8.1 until the next windows version is ready. That has been reported earlier. Here is yet another report that confirms the fact. Microsoft stops selling Windows 7 versions, Windows 8 Quote Windows 8 is also no longer available at retail from Microsoft, as the Redmond-based giant just wants it to go away at this point Put another WAY, 8 and 8.1 are effectively two different systems. IMHO the best you can do is find all your install DVD/CDs and backup all your stuff and prepare to a do a clean install of version 8.1 and live with it. EDIT: If you are a MSN member, you might get a free 90 days version of 8.1 and maybe install it again after the 90 days are up. That WOULD get you into the next year and maybe then MS will have some kind of special offer. And of course it decides to forcefully upgrade to 8.1 in the middle of a multiplayer match with a penalty for leaving. And of course the resolution and performance problems are going to be back for the third time. And of course I'm going to have to factory reset my computer back to 8 a forth time. Dang it, Microsoft...After you do that it may be a good idea to turn off automatic updates... There is no "force" screen you speak of...Quote If you are a MSN member, you might get a free 90 days version of 8.1 and maybe install it again after the 90 days are up. That would get you into the next year and maybe then MS will have some kind of special offer. To my knowledge, Windows 8.1 is free to Windows 8 users according to the article. At least it was for me.It is free...you're correct Dave.Quote from: Wuai Bel Ree on November 07, 2014, 09:35:12 PM I have auto updates turned off and yet I keep getting pop-ups to update to 8.1.Either you don't have them turned off, or you aren't getting the prompt. None of my VMs or systems running 8.0 have prompted me to updated to 8.1. Quote And for those who think I'm out of my mind for not wanting 8.1, I can't upgrade to it because it causes problems that no one seems to know how to fix (unexplained low resolution in certain places and significant speed decrease). I'm stuck with 8.Issues which coincidentally are the same as if hardware drivers weren't installed- which coincidentally is a side effect of Windows 8.1 being installed (RESETS to generic drivers for some reason). Easy to address by simply installing drivers. I think you are outta yer mind...and simply bashing Windows... All of the above solutions work.Update to 8.1 & be happy it's free.Get the 8.1 free. I had 8, 8.1 is much better, I can see many of the 8 problems gone now. Eventually windows will do away with 8 anyways. Yes you do have a choice, go with 8.1 Thanks ChuckRecent Rumors... http://www.pcpro.co.uk/operating-systems/25290/windows-10-release-date-news-features-plus-how-to-download-the-windows-10 Quote Update: Microsoft has announced that it has over 1.5m active testers using the Windows 10 preview and as a result has fixed over 1,300 bugsWhat does Win 10 beta's have to do with the Topic ? ?Quote from: patio on December 21, 2014, 08:26:03 PM What does Win 10 beta's have to do with the Topic ? ?I was looking for the release date of 8.2 and all I got was Windows 10, so is Windows 10 going to out before windows 8.2? This story was back in June. Before we learned that 9 is 10. http://www.loadthegame.com/2014/06/25/windows-9-rumored-come-free-windows-8-2-owners/ Maybe MS should make a retroactive Windows version and call it 7 of 9. Microsoft announced that they will have webcast regarding windows 10. Since you are waiting for the release of it, maybe you will be interested on their webcast that will happen next year. http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2014/12/11/join-us-to-hear-about-the-next-chapter-of-windows-10/Back to topic. Solve : Windows 8 ISO?? |

Answer» I would like a link for the windows 8 iso. I have the product key so it's not necessary to post a product key. If you want you may but its your risk. Please use dropbox or mediafire links. With only adshortenrs such as, adfly and tinyurl. This will be your only warning. Only legitimate business on this site. Here's the best way to get Windows 8: http://tinyurl.com/ozqqonpAllen what do you mean (legit) I have payed for the software I am not asking for a product key. Then if your key is genuine, it surely would have either included a DVD or you would have been given instructions on how to download the ISO from Microsoft directly.Quote from: camerongray on December 05, 2014, 06:51:36 AM Then if your key is genuine, it surely would have either included a DVD or you would have been given instructions on how to download the ISO from Microsoft directly. Not necessarily. HP Stream 7 comes with Win8.1 installed, no DVD, no instructions to download; does have rescue partition. Rescue media is available from HP for 1/2 the price of the tablet w/OS. MS is giving the OS away for free to the manufacturer. http://www.howtogeek.com/195934/what-exactly-is-windows-8.1-with-bing-do-i-have-to-use-bing/ Windows 10 will likely be free, too.The link given by Computer_Commando is required reading for anyone think of either a new computer or operating system. This is a brilliant MARKET strategy by Microsoft. Now there is no more market for 'cheap' computers without an operating system. An yes, if you need either Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 preview, both are available free if you get it from Microsoft. The earlier Windows 8 is no longer supported. Th free free offers are really evaluation versions and you only get the those versions. The whole range of Windows systems is not available as evaluation. Presently I am trying out both the 8.1 and the 10 preview free trails. So FAR, they seem to be very good and flexible. There are things I do not like, but there are ways to WORK around the things the annoy me. Expect Windows 10 to com out next summer. Maybe I will get a new computer next year if things BIT up. Quote from: Geek-9pm on December 11, 2014, 06:13:00 PM ...1. Except for the Win8.1 w/Bing which is fully activated version when purchased with a tablet. They will likely have a Win10 when it is released. 2. Nothing from MS is perfect. Turn off or lower UAC (User Account Control). "Search" function no longer functions as one would expect; it does not search for folders & files. Download & install "Agent Ransack" which does search folders & files. |

Solve : Random warble sounds coming from my PC?? |
Answer» I have a BIT of an issue. For a few days now, my PC will randomly play a warble sound. It doesn't seem connected to any programs or anything I do, it's just random. Check Control Panel /Sounds/events...you'll have to play all on the drop down list to find the culprit... None of those are it. Probably makes sense considering I keep system sounds muted. I did NOTICE a correlation. My normal setup is firefox, steam, and skype. It's not a default sound and I never hear it normally, but I BET it's one of those playing it. Only problem is I don't know how to figure out which one and why.If system sounds are muted you shouldn't hear it at all... That being stated i'll bet it's Skype...Quote from: patio on December 10, 2014, 06:36:25 PM If system sounds are muted you shouldn't hear it at all... I don't have all muted sounds, just system ones. Like the clicks and the sounds of start up because they're simply annoying. So it's definitely not one of those. Could be Skype, although I haven't updated recently so I don't know why it'd start. Could be Steam, Steam has updated recently, but everyone I've asked doesn't have the same problem. Steam and Skype would probably have an install directory that has all the sound files used by the program, right? If I could find those surely I could find the sound and determine what program is playing it. Then I could probably determine why and a better fix.You can find the Skype sounds in the Options dialog, under sounds. You can play them there. I don't think they have actual files on disk, and are either part of the program's resources or inside one of it's data files. Not sure where Steam stores it's Client sound files. Also: it's worth noting that EVEN if you have system sounds muted, that would only prevent sounds played by the system, and not those by applications- applications can play system sounds. So if you mute system sounds, you would still get say notification sounds from outlook or thunderbird, even though the MAIL message event sound is in the system sound control panel.Quote from: BC_Programmer on December 10, 2014, 09:21:32 PM You can find the Skype sounds in the Options dialog, under sounds. You can play them there. I don't think they have actual files on disk, and are either part of the program's resources or inside one of it's data files. Not sure where Steam stores it's Client sound files. It doesn't appear to be one of Skype's sounds. That leaves Firefox and Steam. Any idea where to find firefox's sounds? |

Solve : hanging? |
Answer» I've purchased the Acer Aspire E1 571 laptop, with Windows8 on board. Last night I had the laptop open a check disc and repair for this morning, and has for 5 hours been hung on 27%. I'm not to sure what is so special about this NUMBER, but a LOT of people that have opened a check disc are hung at 27% or 28% or 29%. I really need my laptop to spring into ACTION soon, so I can finish some work I have started on it. PLEASE, any advice on what I should do here will be really appreciated. I'm not sure though why on earth that you can just cancel it when it has started. Why have Windows taken this out of the hands of people. I've read on other web sites that you should give the is 24 hours to complete its scanning and repair which , to me is utterly ridiculous, if a person is reliant on that computer. Is your computer under WARRANTY? If so, have you tried contacting Acer? |

Answer» Bought a new Lenovo ideacenter last month. Aside from the fact that windows 8 blows, the free trial of word, excell, powerpoint et all is up and now I have to actually BUY the product key? *censored* the free trial of word, excell, powerpoint et all is up and now I have to actually BUY the product key? *censored*Windows doesn't normally come with Office at all. If anything you should take issue with Lenovo for possibly misleading you into thinking it was not a trial version of Office. In fact, Bill Gates isn't even in an Executive position at MS anymore, either. What is notebook? As Geek-9pm said there are alternatives to MSOFFICE. Thanks for the replies. I know gates is no longer at Microsoft but c;mon, you think if he WALKED in the building he'd be ignored? I was being more rhetorical than factual. This is probably my 6th system since I bought my first used desktop back in 96 and the first time I've had no access to ANY type of document writing software without paying. There was always a "product key" to activate windows software. I've already called Lenovo and LET them know what I think of this scam so today I will go to best buy and let them know as well. In the MEANTIME, I will try the alternatives. a little less frustrated in georgia.OK. So you never use WordPad? I It exports in RTF, which does enough formatting for some letters and documents.Quote from: nyernga on June 01, 2013, 07:07:35 AM This is probably my 6th system since I bought my first used desktop back in 96 and the first time I've had no access to ANY type of document writing software without paying.Windows has a simple built-in Word Processor, originally Write and now Wordpad (as Geek mentioned) which are often sufficient for most people's document needs. It is the manufacturers that have given you Office/Wordperfect or other Applications. A good portion of prepackaged software included a full version of some Office Suite, but the decision to include it (and what to include) is more a cost analysis by manufacturers. Also, one might think: "Ahh. well, Microsoft should include Office with Windows". That sort of falls apart when you consider what happened when they included Internet Explorer into Windows. All that said, very few people actually use Word in such a way that makes what they need to do incompatible with Wordpad. BASICALLY, for most people, Microsoft Word is overkill for their document processing needs, but Word has somehow become synonymous with "Word processor" so people are under the impression that they do need Microsoft Word. And even if you do need a feature in MS Word that isn't available in WordPad, Usually that feature is in something like OpenOffice/LibreOffice, which is free. I think Wordpad and Open/Libre Office can even open and save standard Word documents, too. Quote There was always a "product key" to activate windows software.Yep, that would have been provided by the manufacturer. Usually Manufacturers (Dell, HP, etc) purchase hardware in bulk (for a bulk discount), build the machines, buy OS and full software licenses (eg Windows and Office, things like CD Burners, etc) in bulk, and then try to make that back by offering trials; for example, Things such as "Norton AV" aren't added by manufacturers to help consumers, but more because Norton pays them to do it. The purpose being that Norton will make more back in the resulting sales than they paid the manufacturer, and the manufacturer, in turn, saves a bit of cost and can pass that saved cost on to the consumer in the form of a lower price, making their PC more competitive. It's a big industry and it's a huge balancing act for them to create a PC that looks and works well but uses the cheapest possible components and the most installed crapware to offset the cost. I guess in this case Lenovo couldn't justify giving a full Home version of Office for some reason. Which actually makes no sense since Thinkpads are usually associated with "businessey" tasks. Quote I've already called Lenovo and let them know what I think of this scam so today I will go to best buy and let them know as well. In the meantime, I will try the alternatives.Well in fairness, if anybody lied to you it was the salesman. Usually if something is a trial it will quite clearly state as much, but Salesman are a bit more apt- thanks to commissions- to leave out such "minor details". On the bright side, this gives you a chance to give some good free software a go, and you may be pleasantly surprised. Well as might be expected, the salesman is no longer working there but the supervisor was helpful in explaining what's happened in the computer world since my 6 year nap. I will look for wordpad and see if it fits my needs. IDO have access to excel but thats by using my companies access information. I'm thinking bud light tonight to ease the pain. Thanks to everyone for the help, insight and tougue in cheek humor.......DLoad and install Libre' Office and you will never moan about MS Office again... Answer» Started to download Zonealarm firewall yesterday but when it got to 80% installed it just stayed there and eventually I closed it. Since then and it could just be a coincidence, if I try CLICKING on the browser icon or any other icons, nothing happens and I haven't been able to turn the computer off other than by the power button. Gave up trying last night and have been trying again this morning - a small blank box popped up earlier this morning and the blue circle icon is going round and round - an earlier box said the programme is not responding but I don't know what programme it means cos I have'nt been able to click on anything to start a programme. Have thought of trying Recovery and System Restore but when I click on them nothing happens. Help!!My suggestion is to start in Safe Mode and see whether Zonealarm shows up in Features and PROGRAMS (in Control Panel). If so, then try uninstalling it. And then, try restoring to a Restore Point before the attempted installation of Zonealarm. If Zonealarm does not show up in Features and Programs, proceed with restoring to a Restore Point. |

Solve : BSOD crash after restart/some shutdowns? |
Answer» Hi. I just upgraded a really old Toshiba laptop from Windows Vista Home Basic to Windows 8, and every once in a while, on a shutdown, it just BOOTS up again and gives me a crash error about some minidump, sysdata, and memory.dmp files. For every restart though, it gives me the error. Whenever the error comes, I can continue using the laptop normally again. Other than a very few number of drivers that I couldn't find for a Windows 8 laptop of my type, it's been handling Windows 8 very well. Some information about my laptop: |

Solve : Getting sound to play through mic in 8.1?? |
Answer» How do I get sounds my computer plays to play through my microphone with no third-party SOFTWARE? How do I get sounds my computer plays to play through my microphone with no third-party software?A microphone, of course, is an input device. The above sentence SEEMS to imply a mic is an output device. Do you have software to record, or not? What is the model number of the computer? Some have controls built into the case of the computer. Or there may be a special key on the keyboard to TURNON the sound output. My keyboard has a mute button. Does yours? |

Solve : 100% CPU, memory, disk? |

Answer» I had just bought and received this computer on Saturday and I am already experiencing issues where I cannot operate effectively at all. I was hoping someone COULD help me diagnose and fix the problem. Here's the notes: Spoiler subsystem app ...You meant spooler subsystem, right? Have you installed any printer(s)? What does it show in Devices and Printers? I'm using avast with my Windows 8 laptop; its an HP model. I wouldn't delay resolving this. I had a problem when I made the initial purchase for my HP laptop. I was burning a set of recovery discs from the recovery partition. This required 6 discs. After burning the 1st 4 discs, the DVD-RW drive stopped working. I had purchased the computer from a local OfficeMax store and the problem I encountered happened within the store's 14 day return or exchange policy. So, I took it back to the store and GOT an exchange and have had no problems with the replacement. If I had not returned the computer to the store within that 14-day time frame, I would have had to pursue the issue with HP and I believe that would have been a MUCH bigger hassle. Yes, my phone changed spooler to spoiler. I'm trying to resolve this prior to sending it back due to the fact that I desperately need it for my classes. below i listed all of the devices. If they want to try a remote connection to your computer, I'd allow it in this case. Boot into safe mode, go to the desktop. hold down the windows logo key and press the R key in the open box type in, msconfig then click on OK. From in there go to services and check the box to hide all Microsoft services. Then go to startup and disable everything. Reboot. Does it still happen? Yes - either system restore your computer to an earlier checkpoint, or restore to factory settings and start again or take it back. No - start adding in the services a few at a time and keep rebooting and checking. When it starts happening then disable those last few services you start one at a time until you pinpoint the problem. If you manage to get it working fine with all the services running do the same thing with your startup programs.I reinstalled windows, all is fine now. Thanks for your help |

Solve : Start Menu? |
Answer» And M$ said people don't use the Start Menu from previous versions of Windows enough to justify keeping it in Windows 8. Even 8.1's faux start menu is ludicrous. Here is just one example of how fast and easy it is to use the Start Menu in Windows 7. Doesn't seem very related to the Start Menu at all. However, on that, it is RIFE with absolute nonsense and unsubstantiated, cargo-cult 'optimizations' of dubious value as well as some pandering of useless software applications. -Present the "tip" to make Avast "Faster and more Efficient" by enabling Silent/Gaming Mode, which is not the case, since all this does is disable Avast Popups. Less annoying certainly, but not faster or more efficient. Then.... installs Glary Utilities. Uh, yeah, I'll pass on installing pointless crap masquerading as tune-up software, thanks. I'll cover this later By copy pasting some of the discoveries I made in a blog post I tried to write about various "cleaner" utilities. "For part 8 we're going to disable the Windows Search Indexing Service" My favourite part is that during the process of disabling this, he actually uses it. (The Start Menu Search uses the the Search Indexing service; if it is disabled then the "Search" won't find anything added after the Indexing service was disabled.). Bravo. Nothing like lobotomizing the most powerful feature of an OS for the unsubstantiatable rumour that it "might improve performance". Doesn't matter if your Word Processor starts 10 ms faster if it takes you three seconds to start it using the All Programs Menu. Then he disables UAC Well, not really. He sorta does. Doesn't mention why. Doesn't say how this helps performance (Spoiler: it doesn't) Then he uses the "Adjust for Best Performance" checkbox in the Advanced Visual Settings dialog. This also, despite it's name, doesn't actually improve performance at all. (XP was around the last time it might improve performance, for older Graphics Cards. My ATI Rage Pro AGP card for example benefited noticably from disabling the Alpha Blended Selection box option, because it's driver/hardware didn't support accelerated Alpha blending so it had to be done in software). Nowadays few of the capabilities shown have a negative effect on performance, and of those that do I doubt there is a measurable one, and of those that there is a measurable one, it's probably not perceptible. The Virtual Memory one is where he steps into cargo-cult rumour pandering. Why correct the rumour mill when you can use it to grind your flour, I suppose: "If you have 4GB of Memory or more, Select no Paging File. If you do not, select Custom Size and for the Initial and Maximum size enter the value listed below for "recommended"." This is not much of a performance tweak. If the paging file is disabled the Heap Manager is basically lobotomized and certain memory operations simply cannot be performed properly. It also lobotomizes your Commit Charge Limit, which can prevent you from running more than 3 applications that perform large Virtual Allocations at startup. (This is because with no Page file there is no "Virtual" memory and any ALLOCATION is a direct allocation to physical RAM). I think Mark Russinovich, who knows more than pretty much anybody else in the world about Windows Internals, put it best: Quote Some feel having no paging file results in better performance, but in general, having a paging file means Windows can write pages on the modified list (which represent pages that aren’t being accessed actively but have not been saved to disk) out to the paging file, thus making that memory available for more useful purposes (processes or file cache). So while there may be some workloads that perform better with no paging file, in general having one will mean more usable memory being available to the system (never mind that Windows won’t be able to write kernel crash dumps without a paging file sized large enough to hold them). The "Some workloads" would only be for very special purpose servers that don't need things like Standby memory, or which would work best with no swapping ever. This is limited to only a few very specific Server configurations such as AD Servers. But most Servers of that nature are run on the same system as other services such as databases so the cases are few and far between. The notation about using the recommended size also seems to ignore that the recommended size listed is simply 1.5 times the usable memory. Windows doesn't perform any sort of sophisticated check on what applications you run frequently and their memory profiles to come up with the recommended value. It's basically just a value that somebody at MS pulled out of thin air, which Mark himself pretty much says in the linked post. It also puts a set limit on your Commit Charge at which POINT allocations will fail. The only advantage I could see would be in making it contiguous, but this hasn't been the case since at least XP. (XP and later allocate a permanent pagefile set in this manner using what it believes to be the outermost tracks of the drive. since Magnetic Platter drives have a Constant Angular Velocity this means the Read/Write rate is fastest there, but if there is already data there for whatever reason the 'permanent paging file' will not be contiguous. The paging file normally tries to consume the outermost tracks anyway so this doesn't really change a whole lot. (it's pretty much the same as just having an application allocate a lot of virtual memory to make the pagefile larger). It seems they aren't aware of the simple arithmetic behind the recommended value though. Another tip recommends ReadyBoost. ReadyBoost is quite thoroughly covered by Mark as well in his series on the Vista Kernel. I find this advice a BIT of a face-*censored*-turn even though it will typically have a positive result given the recommendation to disable the pagefile, though. Going back to the "registry cleaner" type thing, GlaryUtilities, in this case: Quote I installed it in a Win 7 VM I had, which to my recollection is pretty much a 100% pure clean install from the MSDN Win7 SP1 install disc. Summary: A lot of the things provided as "performance tweaks" are only considered as such through myth and rumour and not typically through any particularly well-tested amount of evidence. As is not atypical of such 'tweaks' they appear to be based on the supposition that the computer is a magic box and we should make assumptions about how the configuration changes actually work and then base our "optimal value" on those assumptions. Which can sometimes work well but oftentimes blows up in the face or works to the detriment of performance or usability, particularly in this case the one about not running with a Pagefile. I'm not really sure what the Start Menu has to do with it though. Most of the purpose he used the Start Menu for have more efficient ways to do it even in win7, and I think they are all semantically compatible with the Start Screen anyway. I imagine he went that way (hopefully) because it's the easiest way to guide a person through the various 'tweaks'.Is your only objective on this forum to spread the fact that you don't like Windows 8? If so we realised after the first several threads you started. Some people like you don't like Windows 8 for your own reasons, that's fine. I'm now using Classic Shell because it will use the Classic Start Menu and its free. I really hate this Windows 8 64bit as apps I've used for year don't install or work. All your 32 bit apps should run fine in 64bit Win 8... Which ones are you having issues with ? ? Sounds like sour grapes.... At any rate it's most likely the apps Authors and not MS at fault here...Quote from: Keithuk on July 25, 2013, 07:00:57 PM I really hate this Windows 8 64bit as apps I've used for year don't install or work. I see a lot of complaints and discussion where people "can't use Apps they've used for years". And yet it never fails that despite using the apps for years, the name of any of those applications seems to escape them. Like Win7 and Vista, the 64-bit version of Windows 8 cannot run 16-bit Applications. There are also a few isolated cases where 32-bit applications have installers that are 16-bit; many of those are covered by 32-bit equivalents and/or support setup replacements provided with Windows Vista, 7, and 8. |

Solve : Windows 8 installs Dual boot. I like it.? |
Answer» Dual boot windows seven and windows eight trial. Works good! So, you old geekster, you just instinctively knew you had to use Windows 8's Charms bar to get to the Shutdown command, right? And right off the bat, you just had a feel for Windows 8 and you just opened and closed Windows 8 apps with ease and found the Desktop right away and effortlessly moved back and forth between the Windows 8 Start screen and the Desktop. Is that right? An analogous statement could be made for Windows 95 as compared to windows 3.1 eg. You just instinctively knew you had to press a button labelled "Start" to get to the shutdown command, right? And right off the bat, you just had a feel for the Windows 95 Taskbar and you opened and closed Windows 95 Apps with ease and found the Start Menu easier to navigate than the Program Manager and effortlessly switched between applications using taskbar buttons rather than desktop icons, is that right? FWIW though I found the desktop pretty easily. I pressed escape. See, I use the logic that the Start Screen has REPLACED the start menu. it did not replace the Desktop. How do you close an Open Start Menu? You press escape. Also, in my personal use case, I use Start->Search for EVERYTHING. This isn't limited to win8 of course. Therefore some of what you addressed to geek isn't even necessary- for example, you can type "shutdown" into search. The item it finds is labelled "Turn off your PC" which seems pretty clear in what it does. No NEED for charms there. Based on some of my co-workers who installed classic Shell and their program-management preferences, I've come to conclude that there really is something most who dislike Win8 have in common. That is the All Program Menu. That is, people that use Start->All Programs to launch applications. Since the Start Screen rearranges the heirarchal content into tiles, people that used to drill down through the Start Menu may be disillusioned. However, what those people fail to realize is that the All Programs menu has been effectively deprecated. Windows Vista moved the All Programs Menu so that it appeared within the main Start Menu, rather than filling the screen. The fact that you could Search through them with the Search bar more than made up for this- It's a rare instance where a person is going to meander through their start menu "just browsing"; usually you are going to start an application and know what you want. I know I personally find using XP and Earlier mildly frustrating; I lost count of the number of times I pressed the Windows key and started typing a entry to search for before realizing that XP didn't have that feature. Than the fact that I had to drill down through several levels to get and find the Application I wanted to launch simply solidified how massive the productivity boost from the Search bar was. The reason I surmise that the people who have issues with Windows 8's Start Screen might be adapted to using the All Programs menu is that the Start Screen is semantically the same as the Win7 and Windows Vista Start menu when it comes to Search.Nice post, BC. As for me, fi I have something I want to do often I make a shortcut and put in on the desktop. Better yet, I make a folder and put the shortcuts there. Because I snake them, I know what they are. And if I FORGET, I look at my notes. By the way., where are the sticky notes in Windows 8? Quote from: Geek-9pm on August 22, 2013, 10:52:05 PM Nice post, BC. It's still there. Start->Search "Sticky" |

Solve : Want to search for html code in Windows search? |
Answer» I wouldn't think this would be hard, but it has me BEFUDDLED. I have a website, and I would like to find every example of some antiquated code (embeds, to be SPECIFIC), so I can replace them. The easiest way to do this, I suppose, would be Windows search (the WHOLE site in on my computer, of course. But searching for the word "embed" or anything that's part of the html code - as opposed to text - GIVES me no results. It doesn't seem to search the source code. Is there some way that I can search a whole lot of html FILES for a certain piece of code so I can change them all easily? |
