Solve : Windows Installer Possible Solution? |
Answer» Okay i have a problem with QuickTime i need to update it BAD, but every time i try to update it it says...i don't remember what exactly it says but i know that theres something wrong with my Windows Installer and i have tried all the suggested ways to fix it except for Reformatting my OS and that's what I'm down to. I have the CD and i have 2 hard drives and based on what i learned when i reformatted my sis' laptop i might be able to TRANSFER everything from my C drive to my D drive (and whats left over get "however many is needed" gm ail accounts and store it in there) then clear the partition on my C drive and reinstall my OS then put all my files on my C drive and reinstall the OS on my D drive then put all the files back to where their supposed to be. but do i have to install the OS to both drives at the same time so their SYNCED together all the time or if i do that will i have to restart my computer and boot from that drive to access whats on that drive? Sorry i type a LOT, please help Windows Installer fixthat uses Windows Installer to install...windows installer doesnt work on my computer i got the same error message as always.Quote i don't remember what exactly it says but i know that theres something wrong with my Windows InstallerTry again, and post a whole error message. Any other installs affected, or just QuickTime?anything that uses the Windows Installer to install, doesn't install. I try to install something then a box pops up. ^box that pops up^ then after a while of saying "Preparing to Install..." it brings up an error box that says "The Windows Installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running windows in Safe Mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance." Check here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315353hmmm now im down to an In-Place re installation of XP, but can i install Vista in-place of XP or would i have to clear the partitions and start from scratch like any other OS installation Did you try the above LINK? If computer is not working correctly, an upgrade is not recommended. Start from scratch, rather.Re-register MsiExec
If this METHOD fails, you will need to reinstall the Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI) Windows Installer 1.1 Windows Installer 2.0 Windows Installer 3.1[/list] |

Solve : MS Word Merge Fields - need help!? |
Answer» I'm pulling some information from a database to insert a person's name; however, I want the name to be in all caps. I know there is a switch to do this (\* Upper) but am unsure if I can insert a 2nd switch, or how to do it. Can someone help with this? Is it even possible? This is what my merge field looks like: { DOCPROPERTY "First Name" \* MERGEFORMAT } Thanks for any help!! -CindyI don't have much experience with MAILMERGE but I experimented with merging from an Access database and DISCOVERED what seems like a solution. I used the Insert, Field, command to insert fields named fname and lname from a simple Access database. I'm not clear on how you set up your document. Exactly how did you do this?: Quote This is what my merge field looks like:How did you enter the field? Thanks for your help, but I actually got it figured out. I added a switch to the end (\* Upper), which makes WHATEVER I PUT in that field come out in all caps. Thanks again! -CindyHmm, I don't know why you're using DOCPROPERTY here. The code WORD uses when I use the Insert | Field command to set up MailMerge from an Access database is MERGEFIELD fname \* Upper . I did not manually type the switch; that was created by Word, based on my choices in field setup screens. But, whatever works for you ... |

Solve : Question about Word...? |
Answer» I'm just wondering if I have several Word documents open at once, can I group them so they don't take up the whole task bar? For school I'm always taking info from 5-10 or even more documents at once and I usually just leave them open because I'm always using them. Before REFORMATTING my computer a while ago they used to automatically group but they don't anymore. I have MS Office 2003 right now but I don't know what I had before. Anyway no big deal just trying to keep the clutter off the computer since a few people use it. |

Solve : Mass Media Conversation Software? |
Answer» Goeden Dag, .MP3 is a open source format that seems to work just about everywhere now...I get what you're saying here, but just so you know, MP3 is not open source. It is in fact a proprietary and patented format and commercial MP3 players have to pay a licensing fee to use it. OGG is a true open source format, but it is a lot harder to find portable music players that supports it.Deerpark how do you like the Zen ? ? I was thinking of grabbing one.I've got the (by now slightly old) Zen Micro and I just love it. Sound quality is excellent as it usually is on Creative PRODUCTS. Just do you self a favor and buy a quality PAIR of earphones, the included ones are not GREAT. But that seems to be a common problem with MP3 players. Can't really think of anything negative to say about it... Thanks, Deerpark The actual main reason I wanted a program like this was because my brother gave a bunch of music to my sister, who gave that same music to me, that had VBR (Variable Bit Rate) formats for encoding... anyways, this resulted in a bunch of media files with 800+KBPS (a few 1MBPS as well) bitrate files... (and even more that were in the 500-700 range) This is a bit too big for me, and I will soon be running out of disk space. Once again, thanks, Deerpark. You're welcome Zylstra, I hope MM will suit you. Quote from: Deerpark on April 06, 2008, 03:25:53 PM You're welcome Zylstra, I hope MM will suit you.So far it is I am leaving everything at the VBR format, but, also changing it to MP3. (I decreased the VBR levels though, it should be ~256KBPS now) I am only converting things over 367KBPS, (I am great at manipulating programs like that,) so, all should go well. (Its sure taking a while though) Media Monkey, formerly DB-songs is a good organizer which I have used, and perhaps dbpoweramp which has been around a while... Here's a real interesting article - behind the mask about the theory of MP3, and some tips to improve your mp3's...Great stuff Deerpark and thanx ! Zen 4G on sale today only 75 bucks...goin for it !Sorry for my latefulness (note: "latefulness" is not a real word)... It all worked out alright. Thanks, everyone |

Solve : Home Network Communication? |
Answer» Does anyone know of a program (preferably free, of course) which will allow COMMUNICATION between computers on a home network? I have a COUPLE of computers which have no Internet access, and WOULD like to be able to to send messages BACK and forth. Do you mean an instant messaging program?Yes.You might take a look at some of the offerings here. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll take a look, In the meanwhile, I have found a couple of Windows programs which are already on the computers that let me do what I want. One of the computers is running Win98SE, and that OS has a program called "Winpopup" which lets one send and receive messages from other computers without access to the internet. That was exactly what I wanted. Another computer on my network uses Win 2000, which doesn't have Winpopup, but can receive messages uising a built-in Messenger Service. It can send messages from a command prompt using a built-in command "Net Send". It's a little clumsy, but it works. I'm surprised no one has mentioned these. Tom I was unaware of those options. |

Solve : outlook settings change? |
Answer» In Outlook 2003, v11.8206.8172, sp3... I have my email set up as POP/SMTP which works fine checking my email 95% of the time, receiving, sending, no problem. Then every once in a while it asks me for my password again - even though its saved - and I LOOK at the settings and it has changed two of the account settings. The incoming host goes from "mail.(mydomain).com" to "localhost" and my LOGIN goes from "(mylogin)@(mydomain.com)" "(mylogin)@(mydomain.com)/mail.(mydomain).com. In other WORDS, it tacks on the previous incoming server setting to the end of my login name, and replaces the incoming server with "localhost." When I CHANGE the settings back, my email works fine again. Any thoughts? Does ANYONE please have any thoughts on this issue? All the computers in the office are doing this and I constantly have to go around re-setting people's server settings in Outlook! Any help at all would be appreciated. Thanks... |

Solve : What's the deal with windows movie maker?? |
Answer» It only saves your movies in it's own MWMM file that not even windows media player will recognize! I TRIED ZamZar to convert it but ZamZar couldn't do it. You must be able to convert them somehow or they're pretty much useless! Though there are probably free converters about, one would think you could SAVE MWMM in common file formats...Quote from: kilometer on May 09, 2008, 10:43:58 PM It only saves your movies in it's own MWMM file that not even windows media player will recognize! I tried ZamZar to convert it but ZamZar couldn't do it. You must be able to convert them somehow or they're pretty much useless! That's just the project file, not the finished movie. To finish the movie, you need to click one of the options in the "Finish Movie" section on the left of the SCREEN (see screen shot). The the wizard will take you through saving it, where you can SELECT settings for quality. However, it will only create WMV files, not AVI or MPG videos. Solve : best antivirus/spyware software? |
Answer» Okay, so I just got some help with a problem on these forums...evilfantasy helped, got nothing but good things to say about the experience But now I have a HUGE collection of various software...and I'm pretty sure I don't need it all. Here's what I have Uniblue POWER Suite (complete version) AVG 8.0 (complete version) CCleaner (complete version) SuperAntiSpyware (Free Edition) Malwarebytes AntiMalware (Free Edition) ATF Cleaner (Free Edition) Spybot S&D (isn't there only a free version?) I think that's it Which of those work the best? Which of those can I remove? PLEASE, ENLIGHTEN meI'm not a big fan of any miracle tools, like Uniblue, but, if it works for you, fine. None of the other programs (except for Spybot's module TeaTimer - if you use it), runs in real time, so none of them have any impact on your computer performance. I'd keep them all, and run their SCANS once in a while. I hope, hard drive space is not an issue in your case.Personal opinion i'd dump UniBlue( use their un-installer if they offer one ) and keep the rest adding AdAware also. You will then have a well rounded package that won't inhale your resources... |

Solve : Is AVG Free 8.0 faster than 7.5?? |
Answer» I just installed AVG Free 8.0 today, over version 7.5. I've noticed that Word and Excel launch faster now. Perhaps it's affected other apps as well, but the launch speed of Word 2003 and Excel 2003 are where I particularly noticed a difference. Anybody else noticed significant differences in your system's performance due to this upgrade? I am glad you posted this question soybean...I recently uninstalled avg due to the fact that it slowed things down to much and installed avast....but after reading what you say I may consider going back to avg as I have always liked it.Have delayed installing 8.0 due to problems reported here. Any problems with your install? There is a possible bug. History-->Virus Vault causes an error warning to appear: Quote In the default theme all looks ok, but in Royale Vista 2 Blue I get these black bars.Quote from: Dusty on May 02, 2008, 05:11:55 PM Have delayed installing 8.0 due to problems reported here. Any problems with your install?I'm running Win XP Pro SP2. I had not planned to upgrade because I seemed to recall reading about some users having problems with 8.0. But, when I received a notice today from AVG that 7.5 will no longer be supported after May 31, 2008, I decided to go ahead with the upgrade. I did not remove 7.5 before installing 8.0; this decision was made after reading on grisoft.com that installing 8.0 will remove any previous versions of AVG. At one point, the installation appeared to have encountered a problem. Sorry, but I did not make note of the exact wording of that message. Whatever it was, it did not prevent a continuation of installation; as I recall, I had to click OK on some prompt related to the message and then the installation proceeded to completion. Again, sorry about the vagueness of this info; I know it's not very helpful. Once the installation finished, I was prompted to restart my computer. I also still had to get updates for AVG; it's main panel warned me that I needed to get updates; this appears to be a one-time catch-up. I have confirmed that AVG is monitoring my email. I use both Outlook and Outlook Express and it is inserting the notice at the bottom of incoming messages that no virus was found in the message. I read the other thread you posted and I can say, in spite of the large download file, version 8.0 is not behaving like bloatware. In fact, I noticed improved performance over 7.5. Applications (not just Word and Excel) are launching faster. By the way, Add or Remove Programs panel shows AVG Free 8.0 weighing in at 26.69MB. If I encounter any problems in the next few days, I post back with details. Edit: After the installation, an old folder named Grisoft and two sub-folders remained in my Program Files folder, but they were empty. I deleted the folders. I then ran CCleaner's registry scan. It found 10 items, some of those were AVG; no surprise there; that's what registry cleaners are for, right? HERE is the thread I started at the AVG forums with the reply I was given. I don't see where that solution would help. I know how to install software and have never had a problem on this particular PC. I even installed and used the 8.0 Pro version when it was in early beta stages with no problems what so ever. I'm really not 'trying' to bash AVG, I just made a decision to boycott and haven't changed my mind yet. I'm sure the number of users who have had no problems far out weigh the ones who have. I might go back to it one day. Just not today LOL... I like the best: Quote PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING - AVG Forum How to Ask for Helpreply....hehehehe I believe, I know how to install a program, as well, but after trying different combinations for couple of hours, I wasn't able to install AVG 8 on Vista, nor on virtual XP.PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING - AVG Forum How to Ask for Help And they are VERY serious about reading that post. I have seen them be quite nasty to people for not reading it first.LOOOOOOOOOOLI just install v8 on 2 machines (XP SP2) I was working on today without a hitch. Smooth install. I did so after noticing (like soybean) that 7.5 was going away. Alan <>< Thanks everyone for the info for version 8, as I have 7.5.524, and had no idea of a upgrade or later version. But when I update from the program, it does the usual incremental updates - but no upgrade or reference. Surely AVG would actively inform, SOMEHOW of this new version? If not - why not? Seems an upgrade may not add more in terms of virus detection...The upgrade is listed as itself in the virus definition update window when you run it... Personally i'm holding off as long as i can.Quote The upgrade is listed as itself in the virus definition update window when you run it...Strangely enough, it wasn't listed in my case.Quote from: Broni on May 03, 2008, 11:33:40 AM QuoteThe upgrade is listed as itself in the virus definition update window when you run it...Strangely enough, it wasn't listed in my case. Same as Patio's pic on mine. I just haven't upgraded yet. Might do that now and see how it works out.Download and installed no problem. It did a brief check and found and notified me of AVG 7.5's presence and said it would be uninstalled automatically before AVG 8 was PUT on. Went without a hitch. Attached a few screen shots of the new interface if anyone cares to see them. [recovering space - attachment deleted by admin]...more... Wouldn't let me get all 3 on one post [recovering space - attachment deleted by admin]One thing, I don't like is "Link Scanner", which installs without asking for permission. I use McAfee Site Advisor, which gives you much more info, then AVG's Link Scanner. If you disable it in AVG, it displays stupid "!" mark on AVG systray icon. Fortunately, it may be disabled from within browser. It's incompatible with FF3, which I have on XP, so it doesn't kick in, but it's still listed in Add-ons, as incompatible. I'm pretty sure, it can be removed through profile listing. I'll work on it.Quote Same as Patio's pic on mine.Oh, I got it. I must have blind eye on advertising....LOLQuote from: patio on May 03, 2008, 11:47:15 AM Hmm, that's not the notice I saw, and apparently not the notice ale52 saw. What I saw stated AVG 7.5 would no longer be supported after May 31, 2008.I'm using AVG 8, seems to be nice and fast. Not a fan of the new interface myself though, but in all fairness it's not something I look at that often. It's possible to opt out of installing LinkScanner (which I did) - check here. Anyway, no problems with the new version on my end.Howdy Calum....long see no time....CALUM!!! YO! I actually chose to go with the link scanner. So far it hasn't interfered or given me a problem with any pages.Excellent find, Calum I just reinstalled AVG from command line, and all worked out fine. Quaxo The only reason, I didn't want LinkScanner is that McAfee Site Advisor gives much more info, then LinkScanner.Quote from: patio on May 04, 2008, 07:20:57 AM Howdy Calum....long see no time....Tell me about it . . . Quote from: quaxo on May 04, 2008, 07:24:55 AM CALUM!!! YO!Hey quaxo! Quote I actually chose to go with the link scanner. So far it hasn't interfered or given me a problem with any pages.Good to know. I just saw the DESCRIPTION of it and decided I didn't want it as I already use SiteAdvisor and NoScript. Also, Broni's statement would further influence me against using it in addition to SiteAdvisor. Quote Excellent find, CalumThanks, glad to help.Quote from: Broni on May 04, 2008, 11:36:26 AM The only reason, I didn't want LinkScanner is that McAfee Site Advisor gives much more info, then LinkScanner. Well, be glad you didn't... I've had my browser (FF2) crash 4 times while searching on Google since I've installed AVG 8. Think the link scanner has something to do with it because it crashes while it's scanning all the links.I have no use for site advisor's and link scanners... As they are subjective and depend on browser resources i say "Off with their Heads".....I used to think like that, but tried SitAdvisor out a few days ago. Wouldn't go without it now, it doesn't seem to make a big difference to the speed or reliability of Firefox.Quote from: patio on May 04, 2008, 11:48:32 AM I have no use for site advisor's and link scanners... Normally, I don't use them. This is the first time I have. I have a regular list of websites I go to and don't usually visit anything new or unusual. If the problem persists, I'll disable it.Quote Wouldn't go without it nowSame here. It's so easy, just to skip red marked sites, when looking for something. Surely, it's not 100% objective, but it gives you pretty good picture.I know when i'm straying into the Danger Zone....Which one am i supposed to be ? ?Where do I get AVG Free and is it actually free (not a trial) ??You can download here: http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download?prd=afe And, yes, it's really free (for personal use).Quote from: patio on May 04, 2008, 07:19:51 PM Which one am i supposed to be ? ? The rope. Anyway...I've avoided 8.0 so far. I downloaded it, but I'm not updating until support for 7.5 runs out at the end of the month. I'm sure I'll be unhappy with the new version because I'm stubborn like that, but as long as it still provides the same (or better) protection, then all is well.Quote at the end of the monthThey changed it....end of the year. I guess, they KNOW.Quote from: Broni on May 16, 2008, 09:02:36 PM Quoteat the end of the monthThey changed it....end of the year. Really? Good to know. With the way my life is lately, I suppose I've been somewhat out of the loop.Yeah, evil posted a link somewhere...ALRIGHT IM HAVING PROBLEMS DL THE AVG FREE 8.0 I GO THROUGH THE INSTALLING PROCESS THEN THIS COMES UP EVERY TIME Local machine: installation failed Installation: Error: Action failed for file _AVG7_avgtdi.sys: stopping service.... Service AvgTdi failed to progress during stopping at checpoint 0 (wait hint 10000 ms) in 91016 ms. What other protection programs do you have installed ? ? You should be disconnected from the web and have them turned off for the install process... You may also have a corrupted DLoad...try grabbing a fresh copy then follow the procedure above. |

Solve : Want to dump Earthlink, how can I import addresses to Outlook?? |
Answer» Hello, several email crashes including loss of contacts, inexperienced tech help, hrs on phone, with multiple hang-ups when calling overseas, etc. Have reloaded at least 3 times in last 5 months, and now can only access my mail thru webmail. Gee, they speak so highly of you. Quote Web Mail can export your list of contacts to a "comma separated value" file that can be read by many other applications, such as Microsoft Excel. To export your address book, click the Export Address Book link in your Web Mail Preferences.Source: Earthlink After you create the csv file from Earthlink, use the file==>import and export wizard in Outlook to create your new address book. Good luck. Want to dump Earthlink, how can I import addresses to Outlook? So, Earthlink is your ISP? And, you're just changing the way you handle email, not changing ISP? I was an Earthlink user for several years, until about Oct. 2007, when I was forced to switch due to a new telecommunications provider taking over our area. But, I found Earthlink to be quite good. So, I'm surprised to hear of your experience with them. Now, I never installed their TotalAccess software, no need for it. And, I ALWAYS used Outlook Express with Earthlink. But, sometimes I would also access WebMail and found that convenient sometimes. Using an email client on your computer to get Earthlink mail as POP mail does not prevent you from also accessing your mail via WebMail. Sidewinder gave you the info you need re: contacts. Thanks for your replies. I will try your suggestions - have 1 more Q tho -- Being new at exporting - can you tell me, will I be able to retain address book in earthlink while also MOVING it over to outlook? Would like to keep using my earthlink webmail til outlook all set up. Sorry didnt include all relevant info before...I use AT&T as my ISP - just kept the earthlink address and Mailbox for $3.49/month. Total Access program won't work with this set up. Thanks again. When you Export your Earthlink contacts etc. to a .csv file as instructed above they remain intact in your ELink account...Quote from: moveiton on April 15, 2008, 12:18:09 PM Total Access program won't work with this set up.So, you never installed it? Then, what were talking about here?: Quote from: moveiton on April 10, 2008, 10:54:16 PM Have reloaded at least 3 times in last 5 months, and now can only access my mail thru webmail. You were reloading what? Since you could still access your mail via WebMail, I think your problem is with your computer, not Earthlink. Dear Soybean, Yes I had Total Access for several yrs, then switched to AT&T ISP and TA WORKED for some time and then it crashed. So I called for tech support and all I could get reinstalled was Mailbox, which was fine. But that has been CORRUPTED more than once too even after HD was wiped and it was reinstalled. It's a long convoluted story and dont want to go into all the details. Thanks for your help, I think now I've got the info that will help me make the shift to Outlook. |
