Solve : Are there any good free photo editing programs??

Answer»

I hope I'm on the right place to post this. If I'm not tell me how to delete this and go somewhere ELSE. I love this website!!!

I had the Kodak program and it had so many problems I uninstalled it and that was a trip because you just don't go to add/remove and remove it you have to jump through hoops to GET rid of it. Anyway the one thing I liked about it was their photo editing. I now have HP but it doesn't have all the options Kodak had for editing. Everything else I like about HP so I was wondering if there is a free program out there just to edit photos. One possibility is The GIMP http://www.gimp.org

It's an open-source photo editing suite that approaches Adobe Photoshop in scope. I've never used it myself -- my better half has used both. She says if you are willing to search out plug-ins for the GIMP which are out on the 'net, you can do quite a lot with the program. It is pretty good just as it is. It's free, open - source software, and there is accompanying software which can be downloaded to make the Windows installation easier.I have done a short article in my site (computer tech links) on free editing programs, including links to popular photo editing programs...

For me, Photofiltre, The GIMP, and perhaps Paint Net usually work adequately; Sometimes I need to combine their features, depending on the level of editing...

Aegis I tried The Gimp and that seemed way to involved for the simple things I want to do with a photo but thanks for the input. I appreciate it.

pcsourcepoint I'm going to TRY photofiltre and paint net. Thanks!Irfanview...also FREE.Thanks for letting me know you tried GIMP. It reminds me of the old joke I'll phrase this way: My wife tried the GIMP, and expected it to be a pain in the neck. After using it, she lowered her expectations... Is that something like "this one's for the Gimp?" YES, and we both need to stop now, before we're banned. patio I downloaded Irfanview and I REALLY like it! Thanks so much. You're very Welcome.
There are plugins for it also for extra editing tools and effects...I hate to admit this but I don't know what plugins are or what to do to get them. Can you explain? IrFanview PluginsThanks again patio!

Solve : MS Word - Weird Problem - Would really appreciate help?

Answer»

Hi all, I collected a bunch of survey responses last year and the site allowed me to download them all as RTF files. In the DOCUMENTS, each question had a line of answers below it, which were next to checkboxes. Obviously, for every question, ONE box was marked with an X and the rest were empty.

A week or two ago, I opened them to look again and the boxes are gone. They've been replaced by Wingdings characters that make the answers impossible to skip through, because you need to look closely to tell which one is "checked' (ie. has a DIFFERENT wingding character from the others).

Now...a while back, I deleted a number of fonts from my computer. I'm wondering if that might be the problem. If so, any idea what font would ALLOW me to view checkboxes? And if I reinstalled it, would I be able to get the proper boxes as empty or checked, or would it just turn them all into blank boxes, since they would have undergone two font changes?

Thanks!

Solve : Can't get Java to run right..?

Answer»

The latest is loaded on the computer. I have XP service PACK 2. Java will work when my wife is logged in on the computer, but not when I'm logged in. Not only does my IE browser not work PROPERLY, but the computer doesn't run RIGHT. For example, when trying to do a search for files, I will get the outline of the SCREEN and then just a solid white background.

Thanks,
RayYour profile may be corrupted. Create new profile, and move stuff from your old profile to a new one: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151I'll try it. I'll have to work under my wife's profile, since mine won't bring up the screen. Here's another thought....whatever profile I download the McAfee firewall products on, the other profile has the problem. Any coincidence?
McAfee, and Norton are two products, I stay away, as far, as possible.

Solve : Windows Installer Possible Solution?

Answer»

Okay i have a problem with QuickTime i need to update it BAD, but every time i try to update it it says...i don't remember what exactly it says but i know that theres something wrong with my Windows Installer and i have tried all the suggested ways to fix it except for Reformatting my OS and that's what I'm down to. I have the CD and i have 2 hard drives and based on what i learned when i reformatted my sis' laptop i might be able to TRANSFER everything from my C drive to my D drive (and whats left over get "however many is needed" gm ail accounts and store it in there) then clear the partition on my C drive and reinstall my OS then put all my files on my C drive and reinstall the OS on my D drive then put all the files back to where their supposed to be. but do i have to install the OS to both drives at the same time so their SYNCED together all the time or if i do that will i have to restart my computer and boot from that drive to access whats on that drive? Sorry i type a LOT, please help Windows Installer fixthat uses Windows Installer to install...windows installer doesnt work on my computer i got the same error message as always.Quote

i don't remember what exactly it says but i know that theres something wrong with my Windows Installer
Try again, and post a whole error message.
Any other installs affected, or just QuickTime?anything that uses the Windows Installer to install, doesn't install.

I try to install something then a box pops up.

^box that pops up^

then after a while of saying "Preparing to Install..." it brings up an error box that says

"The Windows Installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running windows in Safe Mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."

Check here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315353hmmm now im down to an In-Place re installation of XP, but can i install Vista in-place of XP or would i have to clear the partitions and start from scratch like any other OS installation Did you try the above LINK?
If computer is not working correctly, an upgrade is not recommended. Start from scratch, rather.Re-register MsiExec
  • Go to Start > Run
  • Type or Copy and Paste the following:
    • MSIEXEC /UNREGISTER then hit enter.
    • Then again Start > Run
    • Now type or Copy and Paste the following:
      • MSIEXEC /REGSERVER then hit enter.
. No visible change will take place. Try to install/uninstall again.

If this METHOD fails, you will need to reinstall the Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI)
      Windows Installer 1.1
      Windows Installer 2.0
      Windows Installer 3.1[/list]

Solve : MS Word Merge Fields - need help!?

      Answer»
I'm pulling some information from a database to insert a person's name; however, I want the name to be in all caps. I know there is a switch to do this (\* Upper) but am unsure if I can insert a 2nd switch, or how to do it. Can someone help with this? Is it even possible? This is what my merge field looks like:

      { DOCPROPERTY "First Name" \* MERGEFORMAT }

      Thanks for any help!!
-CindyI don't have much experience with MAILMERGE but I experimented with merging from an Access database and DISCOVERED what seems like a solution. I used the Insert, Field, command to insert fields named fname and lname from a simple Access database.

I'm not clear on how you set up your document. Exactly how did you do this?:

This is what my merge field looks like:

      { DOCPROPERTY "First Name" \* MERGEFORMAT }
How did you enter the field?
Thanks for your help, but I actually got it figured out. I added a switch to the end (\* Upper), which makes WHATEVER I PUT in that field come out in all caps.

      Thanks again!
-CindyHmm, I don't know why you're using DOCPROPERTY here. The code WORD uses when I use the Insert | Field command to set up MailMerge from an Access database is MERGEFIELD fname \* Upper . I did not manually type the switch; that was created by Word, based on my choices in field setup screens. But, whatever works for you ...

      Solve : Question about Word...?

      Answer»

I'm just wondering if I have several Word documents open at once, can I group them so they don't take up the whole task bar? For school I'm always taking info from 5-10 or even more documents at once and I usually just leave them open because I'm always using them. Before REFORMATTING my computer a while ago they used to automatically group but they don't anymore. I have MS Office 2003 right now but I don't know what I had before. Anyway no big deal just trying to keep the clutter off the computer since a few people use it.

Any comments appreciated. Thanks.I have microsoft WORKS and when i open 7 document it automatically went under one things. On my computer its has always done that. I have windows xp media CENTER. I don't know if this will help. Right click empty space on taskbar, click Properties, and...

Okay cool. I dunno what I was using before but you could just open 1 Word WINDOW and minimize/maximize all the documents within that 1 window. But this should work just as well so thanks for the tip.

Solve : Play Enhanced DVD without InterActual??

      Answer»

Is there a way to play enhanced DVD content without using InterActual Player? It has never seemed to be compatible with my laptop (with Windows Vista ). I have heard of such PROGRAMS, but I can't seem to find one. Any HELP would be much appreciated.

EDIT: This is the error message I'm getting:
Error PL4014: Playback failed due to an error with the audio subsystem. Your currently installed audio DRIVER may not be fully compatible with DirectX. Please close any DirectSound applications that are using the sound card. If the problem persists, you may need to upgrade or reinstall your sound card driver. Click the “Help Online” button (bottom button on the left) to find out more information.

EDIT #2: I have "VIA High Definition Audio." It sucks, I KNOW, but it says the driver is fully updated.

I wouldn't think my sound card would be the problem because I have no problem watching DVDs; it's the enhanced content that won't WORK.

Solve : Flash and Full Screen Online Video Issues?

      Answer»

I am running a Lenovo thinkpad T60p, WinXP SP2, 1 GB RAM, dual CORE processor @ 2.16 GHz, ATI MOBILITY FireGL V5200 video card.

I am certainly not trying to run Half Life 2 on my laptop, or watch super HD-DVDs. However, even the smallest exertion of video graphics or even online game turns out to run pretty slow, sometimes lagging.
Online videos FULL screen consistently lag, while resizing to a smaller window usually HELPS them run faster (practically normal).
FLASH games run pretty slow, and changing the setting to "low quality" usually helps.
Laptop was purchased 2 years ago, started noticing these problems about 2-3 months ago.

Why is my laptop INCAPABLE of running even simple videos and games smoothly? How can i isolate the source of the problem?

      Solve : OS problem?

      Answer»

For the past 3 days, I've been trying to load an operating system on to one of my spare computers.

It is an older model, running 2 Pentium III processors, both rated @ 500MHz, 320 MB of RAM (2 128MB sticks, 2 32MB sticks), and an 8GB IDE HDD.

First I tried ReactOS, and a number of trunk versions until finding out that it doesn't fully support multi-processor operation. Then I tried Debian, but for some reason it doesn't want to fully install (to be edited for clarity later). Then I tried a liveCD of dyne:bolic (because it's what I had laying around at the time) and it didn't boot up either.

I've used fdisk to wipe and rebuild the partitions on the drive I-don't-know-how-many times in the past three days. Is that the problem? I don't know what to do at this point. What should I do? What am I doing wrong?http://www.intel.com/support/processors/sb/CS-007880.htm

      FROM THE INTEL PAGE ABOVE

      Processors
RECOMMENDATIONS for integration of dual processor systems

In dual processor systems, the processor with the lowest feature-set, as determined by the CPUID Feature Bytes, must be the BOOTSTRAP Processor (BSP). The BSP is the processor that starts the boot process. In the event of a tie in feature-set, the tie should be resolved by selecting the BSP as the processor with the lowest stepping as determined by the CPUID instruction. For example, when mixing b0 and c0 the b0 stepping is the lowest.

Be sure to use an operating system that supports dual processing. Currently, Microsoft* Windows NT*, Windows 2000, Windows XP* Professional and some versions of Linux support dual processing. Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me and Windows XP HOME do not. If you only have one processor installed when you install Windows NT or Windows 2000, you will need to change the HAL to a dual processing HAL when you start using more than one processor. For Linux to support multiple processors, you may have to recompile the kernel. Check with the documentation that comes with the OS.

Note: for the software to make use of dual processing, the software has to be multi-threaded and it must be running on an operating system that supports dual processing.

If you use a dual processing motherboard and you don't use all of the processors, some motherboards require having a special terminator card in the empty processor slot(s). If the motherboard is self-terminating and you are having problems booting, you may try inserting a special terminator or a matched processor in the empty slot or SOCKET to verify that the self-termination is actually working properly.

Check the BIOS Settings. Some boards may have options to retest or enable/disable processors.

I wish I knew more about Linux versions so I can advise you. I'll poke around and see what I can find...

Solve : Mass Media Conversation Software?

      Answer»

      Goeden Dag,
      (good day)

I am wondering if there is any mass media conversation software for music files that could change every .wma 192KBPS file in my library to .mp3 192KBPS.

Why do I want to do this?
.MP3 is a open source format that seems to work just about everywhere now... I never much liked having to wait for Media Player to convert files for my phone/mp3 player.

I have Windows VISTA, plenty of varying disk space, and can handle something resource intensive.

I need something that can convert not only file formats, but, also the bitrates, and also handle filters that would possibly exclude certain files.

I searched Google, but, there were too many adware ridden results.

      Anyone know of anything?

      Thanks,
      Zylstra
      http://www.mediamonkey.com/
I use it myself to play and manage my music, it can even sync music to my Creative Zen so I can do all my music RELATED tasks in this app.
But you may need the paid version if you want to convert a large number of songs, but IMO it is worth it.

Quote from: Zylstra on April 05, 2008, 07:52:38 PM

.MP3 is a open source format that seems to work just about everywhere now...
I get what you're saying here, but just so you know, MP3 is not open source. It is in fact a proprietary and patented format and commercial MP3 players have to pay a licensing fee to use it.
OGG is a true open source format, but it is a lot harder to find portable music players that supports it.Deerpark how do you like the Zen ? ?
I was thinking of grabbing one.I've got the (by now slightly old) Zen Micro and I just love it.
Sound quality is excellent as it usually is on Creative PRODUCTS. Just do you self a favor and buy a quality PAIR of earphones, the included ones are not GREAT. But that seems to be a common problem with MP3 players.
Can't really think of anything negative to say about it... Thanks, Deerpark

The actual main reason I wanted a program like this was because my brother gave a bunch of music to my sister, who gave that same music to me, that had VBR (Variable Bit Rate) formats for encoding... anyways, this resulted in a bunch of media files with 800+KBPS (a few 1MBPS as well) bitrate files... (and even more that were in the 500-700 range)

This is a bit too big for me, and I will soon be running out of disk space.

Once again, thanks, Deerpark. You're welcome Zylstra, I hope MM will suit you. Quote from: Deerpark on April 06, 2008, 03:25:53 PM
You're welcome Zylstra, I hope MM will suit you.
      So far it is

I am leaving everything at the VBR format, but, also changing it to MP3. (I decreased the VBR levels though, it should be ~256KBPS now)

I am only converting things over 367KBPS, (I am great at manipulating programs like that,) so, all should go well. (Its sure taking a while though) Media Monkey, formerly DB-songs is a good organizer which I have used, and perhaps dbpoweramp which has been around a while...

Here's a real interesting article - behind the mask about the theory of MP3, and some tips to improve your mp3's...Great stuff Deerpark and thanx !
Zen 4G on sale today only 75 bucks...goin for it !Sorry for my latefulness (note: "latefulness" is not a real word)...
It all worked out alright. Thanks, everyone

Yes.You might take a look at some of the offerings here. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll take a look, In the meanwhile, I have found a couple of Windows programs which are already on the computers that let me do what I want. One of the computers is running Win98SE, and that OS has a program called "Winpopup" which lets one send and receive messages from other computers without access to the internet. That was exactly what I wanted. Another computer on my network uses Win 2000, which doesn't have Winpopup, but can receive messages uising a built-in Messenger Service. It can send messages from a command prompt using a built-in command "Net Send". It's a little clumsy, but it works.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned these.

Solve : User profile problems in Windows XP?

      Answer»

Hi - I ran a sample of a free "diskscrub" software package at the weekend (Cyberscrub's Privacy Suite - recommended by a "friend" - you can see this is going to end in tears already can't you?) on my ADVENT Media centre PC running Windows XP Media Center Edition (Service Pack 2).

After using the software it appears it has been far too harsh in it's CLEANSING of my PC, as when I first came to restart my PC it appears to have lost my user profile (it is not networked, and I was the only user on the system). When it comes to entering Windows it is entering me with a temporary profile.

I have been able to locate all of my old files on the hardrive, so they are still there, but when I look for my profile it is showing as "backup" rather than "local". I have managed to create a second profile to use temporarily so I don't need to KEEP coming in on a temporary profile, but I really need to get back my other profile. As I say, it is listed as there, but as "backup" rather than "local". Any ideas on how I can change this, or if indeed this is the problem? I basically need to re-activate my old profile, but thus far I have not been able to manage it!

Any advice (other than stop listening to "friends"!) WOULD be much appreciated! Oh, and sorry for waffling a bit!

Solve : Outlook Express 6.0 losing my emails!?

      Answer»

This has just started to happen. For some reason EMAILS in the inbox are just VANISHING for no reason. They do not go into the deleted items either.

The laptop computer has Windows xp professional v5.1 service pack 2.

What is causing this?Do they vanish after closing the email program? Perhaps settings have been changed to auto delete them when Outlook is closed. Or a firewall is reacting adversely to remove them? Perhaps run a manual virus/anti spyware scan on Outlook, and for starting up Windows (Try HIJACK this - a scanner for starting up) and a memory scan...No it new emails in the inbox that just go. Also all emails are now SHOWN in bold (ie unread).

I have a (BT) anti virus which is always on.There could be other reasons, e.g. auto ARCHIVING, different views, profile changes, etc. Check out this site for solutions: Leo help...

Solve : SoundMAX 5.1 Sound Issues?

      Answer»

Hi. I'm having problems getting surround sound out of my speakers in some programs.

I used to get 5.1 sound through winamp on my old com with XP... But not on my new one. For games it works fine (Call of DUTY 4 and Doom 3). When I "test speakers" on SoundMAX BLACKHAWK that came with my p5ke motherboard, instead of the tone sounding on each individual speaker in sequence it COMES from the FRONT left, right, center and subwoofer speakers together, for every tone. When I test speakers through Windows sound configuration from Control Panel, it works fine.

So... I got no idea why this is happening I appreciate any help you smart peoples can give me! I wanna hear my music in surround again...
IM running Vista Business on PK5E mobo with Q9300 cpu, if that helps.

      Cheers.

      Solve : outlook settings change?

      Answer»

In Outlook 2003, v11.8206.8172, sp3... I have my email set up as POP/SMTP which works fine checking my email 95% of the time, receiving, sending, no problem. Then every once in a while it asks me for my password again - even though its saved - and I LOOK at the settings and it has changed two of the account settings. The incoming host goes from "mail.(mydomain).com" to "localhost" and my LOGIN goes from "(mylogin)@(mydomain.com)" "(mylogin)@(mydomain.com)/mail.(mydomain).com. In other WORDS, it tacks on the previous incoming server setting to the end of my login name, and replaces the incoming server with "localhost." When I CHANGE the settings back, my email works fine again. Any thoughts? Does ANYONE please have any thoughts on this issue? All the computers in the office are doing this and I constantly have to go around re-setting people's server settings in Outlook! Any help at all would be appreciated. Thanks...

You must be able to convert them somehow or they're pretty much useless! Though there are probably free converters about, one would think you could SAVE MWMM in common file formats...Quote from: kilometer on May 09, 2008, 10:43:58 PM

That's just the project file, not the finished movie.

To finish the movie, you need to click one of the options in the "Finish Movie" section on the left of the SCREEN (see screen shot). The the wizard will take you through saving it, where you can SELECT settings for quality. However, it will only create WMV files, not AVI or MPG videos.

But suddenly my Java stopped working, all is updated and enabled, it just wont work. I can't use any button or link if it is Java, some STREAMING video and pics don't work. Also, the "Search" function under the start menu and the "User Account" area in the control panel do not work. The windows will open, but they are blank (except for the search dog). EvilFantasy asked me to put in the XP cd and run the SFC but to no avail, and thats all that has been tried so far.

Try creating new profile: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151I tried that when I saw that you suggested to a lady with the same problem, but the USER ACCOUNTS section of the control panel is one of the things that are non-functional.
What exactly do you mean by "non-functional"?You can go as far as opening the window but they are blank (search is also the same way). As for Control Panel issue, couple of things to try:
      1. Install Windows Script: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c717d943-7e4b-4622-86eb-95a22b832caa&DisplayLang=en
      If that doesn't help...
      2. Go Start>Run, type in:
      cmd
      Click OK.

Run following COMMANDS, hitting Enter after each one:
      regsvr32 jscript.dll
      regsvr32 vbscript.dll
      regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll

Restart computer.THANKS! That fixed EVERYTHING not just the control panel but it made SEARCH and all the java apps work again. But now I have a HUGE collection of various software...and I'm pretty sure I don't need it all.

      Here's what I have

      Uniblue POWER Suite (complete version)
      AVG 8.0 (complete version)
      CCleaner (complete version)
      SuperAntiSpyware (Free Edition)
      Malwarebytes AntiMalware (Free Edition)
      ATF Cleaner (Free Edition)
Spybot S&D (isn't there only a free version?)

      I think that's it

Which of those work the best? Which of those can I remove?

      PLEASE, ENLIGHTEN me
I'm not a big fan of any miracle tools, like Uniblue, but, if it works for you, fine.
None of the other programs (except for Spybot's module TeaTimer - if you use it), runs in real time, so none of them have any impact on your computer performance.
I'd keep them all, and run their SCANS once in a while.
I hope, hard drive space is not an issue in your case.Personal opinion i'd dump UniBlue( use their un-installer if they offer one ) and keep the rest adding AdAware also.
You will then have a well rounded package that won't inhale your resources...

Solve : Is AVG Free 8.0 faster than 7.5??

      Answer»

I just installed AVG Free 8.0 today, over version 7.5. I've noticed that Word and Excel launch faster now. Perhaps it's affected other apps as well, but the launch speed of Word 2003 and Excel 2003 are where I particularly noticed a difference. Anybody else noticed significant differences in your system's performance due to this upgrade? I am glad you posted this question soybean...I recently uninstalled avg due to the fact that it slowed things down to much and installed avast....but after reading what you say I may consider going back to avg as I have always liked it.Have delayed installing 8.0 due to problems reported here. Have delayed installing 8.0 due to problems reported here. Any problems with your install?

I'm running Win XP Pro SP2. I had not planned to upgrade because I seemed to recall reading about some users having problems with 8.0. But, when I received a notice today from AVG that 7.5 will no longer be supported after May 31, 2008, I decided to go ahead with the upgrade.

I did not remove 7.5 before installing 8.0; this decision was made after reading on grisoft.com that installing 8.0 will remove any previous versions of AVG. At one point, the installation appeared to have encountered a problem. Sorry, but I did not make note of the exact wording of that message. Whatever it was, it did not prevent a continuation of installation; as I recall, I had to click OK on some prompt related to the message and then the installation proceeded to completion. Again, sorry about the vagueness of this info; I know it's not very helpful.

Once the installation finished, I was prompted to restart my computer. I also still had to get updates for AVG; it's main panel warned me that I needed to get updates; this appears to be a one-time catch-up. I have confirmed that AVG is monitoring my email. I use both Outlook and Outlook Express and it is inserting the notice at the bottom of incoming messages that no virus was found in the message.

I read the other thread you posted and I can say, in spite of the large download file, version 8.0 is not behaving like bloatware. In fact, I noticed improved performance over 7.5. Applications (not just Word and Excel) are launching faster. By the way, Add or Remove Programs panel shows AVG Free 8.0 weighing in at 26.69MB.

If I encounter any problems in the next few days, I post back with details.

Edit: After the installation, an old folder named Grisoft and two sub-folders remained in my Program Files folder, but they were empty. I deleted the folders. I then ran CCleaner's registry scan. It found 10 items, some of those were AVG; no surprise there; that's what registry cleaners are for, right?
HERE is the thread I started at the AVG forums with the reply I was given. I don't see where that solution would help. I know how to install software and have never had a problem on this particular PC. I even installed and used the 8.0 Pro version when it was in early beta stages with no problems what so ever.

I'm really not 'trying' to bash AVG, I just made a decision to boycott and haven't changed my mind yet. I'm sure the number of users who have had no problems far out weigh the ones who have. I might go back to it one day. Just not today LOL...

But when I update from the program, it does the usual incremental updates - but no upgrade or reference. Surely AVG would actively inform, SOMEHOW of this new version? If not - why not? Seems an upgrade may not add more in terms of virus detection...The upgrade is listed as itself in the virus definition update window when you run it...
Personally i'm holding off as long as i can.Quote

Same as Patio's pic on mine. I just haven't upgraded yet. Might do that now and see how it works out.Download and installed no problem. It did a brief check and found and notified me of AVG 7.5's presence and said it would be uninstalled automatically before AVG 8 was PUT on. Went without a hitch.

Attached a few screen shots of the new interface if anyone cares to see them.

[recovering space - attachment deleted by admin]...more...

Wouldn't let me get all 3 on one post

[recovering space - attachment deleted by admin]One thing, I don't like is "Link Scanner", which installs without asking for permission.
I use McAfee Site Advisor, which gives you much more info, then AVG's Link Scanner.
If you disable it in AVG, it displays stupid "!" mark on AVG systray icon.
Fortunately, it may be disabled from within browser.
It's incompatible with FF3, which I have on XP, so it doesn't kick in, but it's still listed in Add-ons, as incompatible.
I'm pretty sure, it can be removed through profile listing. I'll work on it.Quote

Hmm, that's not the notice I saw, and apparently not the notice ale52 saw. What I saw stated AVG 7.5 would no longer be supported after May 31, 2008.I'm using AVG 8, seems to be nice and fast.
Not a fan of the new interface myself though, but in all fairness it's not something I look at that often.
It's possible to opt out of installing LinkScanner (which I did) - check here.
Anyway, no problems with the new version on my end.Howdy Calum....long see no time....CALUM!!! YO!

I actually chose to go with the link scanner. So far it hasn't interfered or given me a problem with any pages.Excellent find, Calum

Good to know. I just saw the DESCRIPTION of it and decided I didn't want it as I already use SiteAdvisor and NoScript. Also, Broni's statement would further influence me against using it in addition to SiteAdvisor.

Well, be glad you didn't... I've had my browser (FF2) crash 4 times while searching on Google since I've installed AVG 8. Think the link scanner has something to do with it because it crashes while it's scanning all the links.I have no use for site advisor's and link scanners...
As they are subjective and depend on browser resources i say "Off with their Heads".....I used to think like that, but tried SitAdvisor out a few days ago.
Wouldn't go without it now, it doesn't seem to make a big difference to the speed or reliability of Firefox.Quote from: patio on May 04, 2008, 11:48:32 AM

Normally, I don't use them. This is the first time I have. I have a regular list of websites I go to and don't usually visit anything new or unusual. If the problem persists, I'll disable it.Quote

Same here. It's so easy, just to skip red marked sites, when looking for something.
Surely, it's not 100% objective, but it gives you pretty good picture.I know when i'm straying into the Danger Zone....Which one am i supposed to be ? ?Where do I get AVG Free and is it actually free (not a trial) ??You can download here: http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download?prd=afe

Anyway...I've avoided 8.0 so far. I downloaded it, but I'm not updating until support for 7.5 runs out at the end of the month. I'm sure I'll be unhappy with the new version because I'm stubborn like that, but as long as it still provides the same (or better) protection, then all is well.Quote

You should be disconnected from the web and have them turned off for the install process...

You may also have a corrupted DLoad...try grabbing a fresh copy then follow the procedure above.

Solve : Want to dump Earthlink, how can I import addresses to Outlook??

      Answer»

      Hello,
It's been a nightmare to use Earthlink these last couple of years with several email CRASHES including loss of contacts, inexperienced tech help, hrs on phone, with multiple hang-ups when calling overseas, etc. Have reloaded at least 3 times in last 5 months, and now can only access my mail thru webmail.
I want to move over to MS Outlook, but I am told by Earthlink the contacts/address book cannot be imported to Outlook, and I must individually enter each contact's info individually, as the file languages a differ with these 2 programs. I find this hard to believe - there must be some way to get my address book exported into Outlook. Any suggestions or input please?
I have MS XP Pro vers 2002 spk2 Pent 4CPU 2Ghz 1.99GHx/1 GB RAM MS; OFFICE Suite 2007
Thank you in advance for your help!

Web Mail can export your list of contacts to a "comma separated value" file that can be read by many other applications, such as Microsoft Excel. To export your address book, click the Export Address Book link in your Web Mail Preferences.
      Source: Earthlink

After you create the csv file from Earthlink, use the file==>import and export wizard in Outlook to create your new address book.

Good luck. Want to dump Earthlink, how can I import addresses to Outlook?

So, Earthlink is your ISP? And, you're just changing the way you handle email, not changing ISP?

I was an Earthlink user for several years, until about Oct. 2007, when I was forced to switch due to a new telecommunications provider taking over our area. But, I found Earthlink to be quite good. So, I'm surprised to hear of your experience with them.

Now, I never installed their TotalAccess software, no need for it. And, I ALWAYS used Outlook Express with Earthlink. But, sometimes I would also access WebMail and found that convenient sometimes. Using an email client on your computer to get Earthlink mail as POP mail does not prevent you from also accessing your mail via WebMail.

Sidewinder gave you the info you need re: contacts.
Thanks for your replies. I will try your suggestions - have 1 more Q tho --
Being new at exporting - can you tell me, will I be able to retain address book in earthlink while also MOVING it over to outlook?
Would like to keep using my earthlink webmail til outlook all set up.

Sorry didnt include all relevant info before...I use AT&T as my ISP - just kept the earthlink address and Mailbox for $3.49/month.
Total Access program won't work with this set up.
Thanks again. When you Export your Earthlink contacts etc. to a .csv file as instructed above they remain intact in your ELink account...Quote from: moveiton on April 15, 2008, 12:18:09 PM

You were reloading what? Since you could still access your mail via WebMail, I think your problem is with your computer, not Earthlink.

      Dear Soybean,
Yes I had Total Access for several yrs, then switched to AT&T ISP and TA WORKED for some time and then it crashed. So I called for tech support and all I could get reinstalled was Mailbox, which was fine. But that has been CORRUPTED more than once too even after HD was wiped and it was reinstalled. It's a long convoluted story and dont want to go into all the details.

Thanks for your help, I think now I've got the info that will help me make the shift to Outlook.

You need to use it to burn a CD with your BURNING software. It is only APPEARING on your system as a "winrar" file because (I guess) you have file extensions turned off in Windows Explorer and WinRAR is associated with ISO files on your system.

Solve : Search and Recover 3.0 Will Not Open?

      Answer»

I have tried to install a data recovery programme called Search and Recover 3.0. I am unable to open it either from the desktop icon or Programmes listing. A window has opened on occasions SAYING “Nt_read error/error no. 1167/drv: 129 LBA: 0 BLOCKS: 1/Abort, Retry or Ignore”

Only when this window has opened and I click on Ignore has the programme appeared to open.

I’ve run a read scan on the installation disk which FOUND no problems.

I’m running XP home and have never experienced this problem in five YEARS of installing programmes on my PC. However, assuming there may be an access problem on my hard drive, I ran a reliable hard drive scanner which found no read problems either.

      Any advice would be appreciated.

What was the name of this reliable hard drive scanner you used?

If you can't find the tool, tell us the brand name of your hard drive and we can most likely provide you with a link.Maybe try the data recovery program on another computer (drive) to test the validity of the program. I assume you have defragged your drive? Perhaps there are programs/files that cannot be easily read from the data recovery program, hence producing errors - e.g. ISO files or passworded files...Hello Deerpark and pcsourcepoint and thanks for the input.

I have now scanned by sector my hard drive with Seagate's own DOS diagnostic software and no problems were found.

Yes I do regularly defrag the HD and clean out my registry.

I have also downloaded and installed the trial version of Search and Recover 4.0, the latest offering from the software manufacturer and that opens perfectly OK. I'm still waiting for a response to this problem from this manufacturer.

Solve : How to get rid of Faronics Deep Freeze software??? Any idea??? Getting fedup?

I have the habit of downloading different softwares from freeware sites and testing it. I happened to instal Faronics Deep Freeze. Check the details of that software if u have not tested it from http://www.faronics.com/html/deepfreeze.asp. This program no MATTER what changes are made, it will reset the computer to its original state when restarted. I installed this software without knowing this into my personal computer. Now I wanted to uninstall some other softwares, delete some files. I am able to do these uninstallations & deletions, but when restarted the same softwares n files gets restored. There is no option given for uninstalling this Faronics Deep Freeze software. That software does not show up in Control
Panel -> Add or remove programs too...I tried deleting it from program files, but again this software RESTORES again when restarted . Now I'm not able to delete any files or uninstal any softwares from my personal system.. Is there any other way to get rid of it...How do i uninstal this Faronics Deep Freeze software. Could you pls someone over here given a solution on on this?......

      Thanks,

      Regards,
      VictorFrom http://www.faronics.com/faq/#1:

      1. Deep Freeze is installed on my machine. I would like to uninstall it. How is this done?

To uninstall the software Deep Freeze must first be disabled and then uninstalled.

      To DISABLE Deep Freeze:

      1. Hold down the shift key and double-click on the Deep Freeze icon. Alternatively, you can press Crtl-Alt-Shift-F6. You should now see a password dialog.
      2. Enter your password and click OK. If you have not yet entered a password you should be able to click OK without entering ANYTHING. You should now see a dialog with boot options.
      3. Select "Boot thawed" and click OK. This will disable Deep Freeze on the next reboot.
      4. Reboot your machine. After the machine reboots you are ready to uninstall Deep Freeze.

      To uninstall:

      1. Locate the installation file you used to install Deep Freeze to this machine. By default the name of this file is called "DF5Std.exe" for versions 5.X and "DF6Std.exe" for versions 6.X.
      2. Run the installation file (DF5Std.exe or DF6Std.exe).
      3. Select the option to "Uninstall"
      4. The software should uninstall and reboot the machine. When the machine reboots, Deep Freeze should be uninstalled.
Thanks buddy,,,I successfully disabled it and uninstalled it...
