I was wondering if you could help me out. I used arcsoft total media 3.5 with XP with little problem. I now have an acer aspire with wndows 7. I keep getting the error message ‘device is not AVAILABLE or is in use by another application’. I disabled all services & enabled them one by one to find that the ‘power’ service is the problem. If it is disabled then the video flows great but the computer sound is off so I have no audio (nor internet). I can not seem to turn on audio without the ‘power’ in system configuration enabled but then I have no cable. Is there a way to do that? Or what if I partition the hard DRIVE (something I’ve never tried) & install another XP or linux will that free up the driver?

The above is what appears in the area where I would type a LETTER .This happens when I TRY to reply to all my emails .I also can't attach anything.I tried sending myself an email and can't send. Today I upgraded to SERVICE pak 3 and also IE 8 .Before that I was sending emails with no trouble.Something MUST have gotten wrong with one of the UPDATES .Can someone help ?

I was looking at a HP laptop kart for a family owned business. So I don't know the specs of the laptop's. So there was a computer kart that help approx. 30 laptops at a time. NONE of them would charge over 80% on the initial charging process. So the never where even started other than to write and image on a disk of the system software. So one day we started them with the 80% charge and there was a Windows 7 Enterprise update that went on. After that the next time we started the computers they charged to 91% and now they wont go beyond that.

The only thing I know about those computers is that they are HP, have the extended life battery, and they RUN the OS Win7 Enterprise

Any help to get the issue RESOLVED would be greatly appreciated

Note that the all 30 laptops have only been started a minimum of twice through there whole life, and the were bought fresh for the company this year (2011)The battery on some notebook computers may not indicate a 100% charge in Windows, even when the power adapter is plugged in. The battery may appear to stop charging between 95 percent and 99 percent.

This is normal operation and is DESIGNED to extend the life of the battery. Even when the indicator light on the chassis shows the battery fully charged, the battery still receives a trickle charge. The battery stops fully charging and is given a trickle charge so that it does not accidentally get overcharged.

To check battery status, press the battery meter BUTTON on each battery. If the battery status does not show 100%, the battery may need to be recalibrated. To locate the instructions for recalibrating a battery, consult relevant notebook documentation.

I purchased a kaspersky antivirus disk that was to be good on three computers for one year. I installed it on one desktop, and my laptop, it would never install on the 3rd desktop. How can I recover all the information to Outlook?

Some files parked in "Local Disk (C:). Users. Admin. My Documents.
My Music files and My Pictures contain no files but I found my Pictures in another file.
I realise I shall probably have to get some one with knowledge to try to sort it out but I would like to see if I can recover Outlook files

Did you do the clean install to the same partition as your original Windows Installation? If so there should be a "Windows.old" folder in the ROOT of your C: Drive where your original Windows installation(and your documents) should be preserved.Thanks Transfusion

The install was done by the computer shop.Have been unable to locate a "Windows.old" folder, just a "Windows" folder CONTAINING many files which have no meaning for me!


A "clean install" is when you wipe your hard drive and install a fresh Operating System on it to ensure that no errors persist if you upgrade from an older operating system.
The best THING to do would be to contact the computer store and ask if they have done any backups of your data.

I want to create some files with jpeg images and burn them to cds and do not want the files to be ABLE to be copied. They would have my art WORK on them. Is there a, preferably free, or a standard way or type of file I need to use to do this.There is no way you can make a CD with uncopiable files. One way to protect them might be to put them in password-protected Zip or RAR archives and only give the passwords to people you trust. Or just supply review versions at a low resolution or with a watermark on them.
USB Flash drives are more convenient, compact and lightweight. No need to burn files on OPTICAL drives and can be password protected. I hope you POST one of your Art works here in CH.

I am unable to open .doc attachments, I was able to do so before but now I cannot open, I believe I may have selected microsoft office as the default PROGRAM by accident. If I create a document I am able to open that in Ms Word, but when I get an attachment that I have to open, when I try to open, I get a window that says MS office and all that is in there is a logo of VAIO. I got tired of re-installing Avast every 30 days....never could get it to accept the Free registration # they kept issuing via e-mail...

People don't like norton because it slow the machine a little, I rather have that than problems.

My router has not assigned the IP 192.168.1.65 though...
And it has not detected the virtual OS as a computer either.

There is this P.O.S server I was working on that had a software mirror of the drive on a single drive with 2 partitions. The first partition mirror'ed onto the second with Microsofts software mirroring CONFIGURED. Is there any benefit to splitting a HD and mirroring it?

To me it stood out as extremely STUPID! Questions I came up with is like ok here is a $2500 P.O.S server and they couldn't stuff an extra 72GB SCSI drive into it when there is clearly space for it? Is there any performance benefit at all to this whole situation since the drive is working twice as hard to populate 2 partitions with LIKE data mirrored? ( I wouldnt think that seek time would be quicker if the head was in the correct position to pick up the data on partition 2 sooner than 1 in a mirror? )

My thoughts are that maybe this was clearly a marketing scam to offer false sense of data protection. On a single drive all your eggs (data) are still in the same basket, and yes it is mirror'ed, but it wont help you in a drive failure unless its only 1 partition or sector that gets hosed and not the other etc.

So does everyone see this the same way that I do that its a half ###'ed server that is a false mirror?If the HDD fails...mirroring is worthless...
Someone sold them a bill of goods.Only 1 reason I can think of: automatic data backup. Not a good way to do it but better than nothing. Hard drives are so cheap now, it makes no sense to backup a partition on the same drive. Also, I notice it's a 72GB SCSI drive. They were much more expensive than ATA or SATA drives. Knowing the age of the POS server would help to explain it. I suspect it predates SATA, so SCSI was much faster than ATA (IDE).It MIGHT be required to fall within PCI regulations. They have some funky requirements.Yes its a SCSI 72GB (fast) single drive. Server is about 5 years old.

And BC... "PCI complaince"... interesting if mirroring is required, and this is a build to be compliant even though it goes against the sole purpose of a mirror to have data on 2 drives.. Going to dig into the PCI Compliance stuff to see where that leads.

The site has been hardened within the last year for PCI Compliance in which firewalls were added to isolate the POS traffic from regular user network traffic etc, and the POS network is now no longer on the same wire ( different isolated segment ) vs riding on same switches etc with alt IP's, isolated behind firewalls, and servers now have to be behind lock and key because of temporary CC number storage issues.

They use to plug computers and servers into whatever network port they could find and have everything running on the same network, users GETTING DHCP addresses and the POS running on static IP's of a different IP address. Lots of issues with too many switches adding latency as well as bandwidth issues where one person is hogging the network pulling up a access database report or power point presentation and then your POS transactions are also trying to get their packets back and FORTH to the servers that keep track of in house charge accounts etc. Needless to say it was a BIG MESS until I started fixing it all from what some other people created. And the network closets were a rats nest nothing labelled just a pile of cat 5 cables and some older BNC stuff for scales all intertwined.

Even worse is that they would have vendors plug their laptops into this same network to get online, but no one monitored for any rogue vendors trying to sniff packets or test for insecurities. Also lots of network ports in areas where people could sneak into and plug in and hack away without being noticed such as switches with open ports available around storage space out in open to see, and hiding places behind pallets of stuff. Someone could have plugged their own cable in and sat hidden behind the stuff and poke away at the network if they wanted and go undetected. So we had to add metal cages to these as well as replace dumb switches with smart switches to block foreign hardware connections and shut off unused ports.

The location is a not-for-profit cooperative food store, so things there were run differently than a regular corporate type of food store.

I have a Dell OptiPlex GX260 and I installed a modem and it does not respond is it bad or is software not installed?

I went to add hardware and there is line that says PCI Simple Communications Controler and this is yellow and as I understand this is not installed, I went to Dell drivers download and I see nothing to download in this category what I am first wondering if the PCI Controler has anything to do with a 56k modem working?

Just recently, anytime I TRY and download anything from the internet (firefox) such as simply an update, it initally downloads the downloader, but then it goes off the screen, and in order for me to actually FINISH the dowload, I have to go to my files and downloads off the START menu.

Hi guys! I have a program called Via HD Audio Deck that manages my 5.1 SOUND distribution. Its doing a really great job, but sometimes I need to adjust things that the program has no way to do by itself. I found that increasing the REAR Speakers volume has a GREAT impact on some songs. After I increase the Rear Speakers Volume, everything is fine. But when I restart my computer all settings are BACK to default. Its getting really annoying. Actually the chance of the settings resetting is around 40%, so not every restart resets them, and thats very strange (atleast for me). I have no idea what version of the program I am using, but it says that its updated.
Edit: I just found that when I decrease the volume to 0, and then increase it a little everything is back to default again (rear volume is equal to front and center again).Some audio control apps have an option where you build pre-set Profiles and save them for future use...check the Help.There are no profiles, I checked everywhere. But I found some function called Room Correction, it MIGHT be useful. Altho I hear no difference with it.

I'm using excel 2003 & its limited to 30 arguments (per function) which means so far i've had to do it over 3 cells & then in another cell return the max of those 3 cells, very frustrating

And after pasting I click download but instead of downloading the file which is suppose to be 252Mb big I only download some file(which I have no IDEA what it is) which are only a few kb/s in size.

i just picked up a new graphics card today (nvidia 8400 GS by PNY) for the purpose of having 2 displays. I used to use a program called UltraMon with an nvidia 6400 or something, and the two did not cooperate, and as a result my computer was totally F'd in the A. The purpose of UltraMon was to extend the taskbar across both displays (a function not inherent with standard windows/nvidia software) as well as it gave me the option to RUN different background on each monitor (as opposed to the same cloned one with stock software).

Im looking for another program that will offer me similar capabilities, however i want to make sure the two are compatible this time. Can anyone recommend a good program? preferably freeware?

The Windows update history for XP is by the Add or Remove PROGRAMS tool while in Vista and Win 7 is via Control Panel - System and Security - Windows Update (Check for updates/Turning on or off updates/Viewing and removing installed updates OPTIONS). You could also type by the Search Programs and Files on the Start menu by TYPING keywords windows update or view installed updates as a filter shortcut for Vista and Win 7.

This is on my self built desktop listed last in my specs (Intel D845GVSR, ect.)
I keep getting these errors in the form of an icon on my desktop. They keep adding up and I keep sending them to recycle bin. I've tried un-install/re-installing Java with the latest version with no joy. My uncle uses this machine and rarely does anything other than Yahoo Mail and Pogo games.
The icons are always the same other than the last 4 digits (numeric) in this SEQUENCE: 'hs_err_pidxxxx'.

What's going on here and what do I do now?
Also, this machine runs Malwarebytes and MSE antivirus (both up-to-date, scans = "no-infection")
Other than this Java issue the machine runs fine.

I don't recall what the default setting is under advanced - java console, but mine is set to hide console. I don't know any other thing I may have changed to get those logs from appearing.

The JDK needs more Disk space as it contains the JRE along with various development tools

Looking to SETUP a small HTML application for a user that will save data to their PC. (No Internet Access)

I have an HP computer with Windows 7 Home. I've been trying to click on the contact and web master links to several sites and I keep getting a popup that says, "default MAIL client not properly INSTALLED." I haven't a clue what that means much less what I cab do to fix it. Can anyone help?

When I am using an art program on my computer, whether it be: Paint. Greeting Cards, Scrapbooking or my Sewing Machine; when I EXIT the program by using the RED X the SAVE Changes To Window that appears is not in English. The languages seem to be CHANGING from software to software. Luckily I know where the Yes No and Cancel buttons are located.

Can anyone suggust a reason for this weird quirk or explain how to fix it?

I've checked the Regional and Language Options and they are set to English (US) and I've restored the computer as well.

What next? I believe this issue began a few years back when I installed a Scrapbooking program from Broderbund but the PROBLEM has persisted.

I have a dell deminson 2350 1024mbg ram 1.8 processor running windows xp I just got dsl and had problems getting it up and running. finally had to reformat the hard drive I have two hard drives c and d it seems that windows xp when I reformated went on d drive and now I have 2 xps. there is a windows folder on d drive but not on c drive. Can I deleat the one on c and how thanks for any info I'll be honest - right now I am well puzzled on this!!! Might be too late for incisive thinking too.

You didn't describe your reformatting sequence - and when I think on it - if you reformatted then am I right in assuming you re-applied the OS? Or didn't reformat C drive.

I can always receive emails OK in OE6 but about half of the time, as soon as I try to reply to anything or forward an email in my Inbox to anyone else, OE just shuts down completely. I have searched these topics on the FORUM... didn't find relevant posts so...

I have just bought my first Lappy (laptop, not lap dance) and it came with Vista (thanks very much) which I'm not very keen on. It is also crammed with dozens of other programs I don't need, use or want, and at the first turn-on, 61 processes were running!!

I want to start fresh with it, put a clean Xp Pro on and move the partition from what it came with (C=110gB D=10gB) to a more balanced... say 30gB for C, 90gB for D?

1) What is the best way to format and repartition? I'm confident with reloading all the bits I need (Windows, HW drivers, AV etc) but how do I get in there and clean it out, to start with a clean slate?

2) Are there any problems I might encounter? Such as not beiing able to install drivers for the HW installed already...? This is my first laptop and it will be under WARRANTY for 1 year...

3) is my new partition ok? Should I save more for C?

I believe XP Pro will sort out a lot of these bits for me... it has WLAN and that is the only thing that really WORRIES me... setting it all up again. Will XP detect these bits and pieces for me?

If I get stuck I still have full Net access through my home PC.

BTW it's a Compaq Presario 2.13gB 1Gb RAM, 120GB HD, Windows Vista Home Basic...

I'm sure someone here can help ya out....Of course I knew it came with Vista... but everything new now comes with Vista. Its so crap they have to GIVE it away! (my opinion... sorry Vista fans. Are there any Vista fans?)

But it was 60% off plus a cash back so I grabbed it. I asked for no Vista but it's loaded up on the machine already in the box!! What happened to the good old days when you had to do everything yourself??

It will give you the option to create or delete partitions. If you want keep D as is, you can do that. BTW, isn't D a recovery partition? In other words, it has Windows Vista and all other original software that came with your system. And, if so, you should be able to burn that to CD or DVD so that you would have a full-restore CD/DVD that can be used, in lieu of the recovery partition, if you ever decide you want to go back to Vista.

Can I ask, is a WIndows GENERATED new partition as good as doing the new partitions in DOS? I have heard it is best to do these major system changes in DOS.

Use the options to create partitions and format a partition that are provided by the Setup procedure from running the Windows installation disk. That will work fine.when you install xp it should give u an option to delete all old partitons. then you will have to create your own partion with the desired space for c. after windows installs, right click on my computer, then go to manage, then disk management, it should show that ur harddrive has extra space, and create a partiton for the amount of space you want.

i think at the beginning the measurement is in KB, so just for common knowledge, 1000 kb is 1 mb, 1000mb is 1 gb.

I help teach elderly people to access the Internet and use email (all at a fairly low LEVEL). In the course of doing this I receive regular email MESSAGES in my Outlook Express from some of the students. The strange thing is some of them do not show any message in the body of the email. When I open the message it actually tells me in the blue title bar that it is SENT in Unicode (UTF-8). If I go into View and encoding I can select a code to read it(even though there are strange characters in addition to the message). All the students use a basic site called www.myguide.gov.uk as their email supplier but not all their messages to me are hidden. There seems to be no way I can alter "sending" codes in myguide so that is not an option. I am told that Outlook Express is TECHNICALLY very clever (I'm not) and will recognise different codes and translate them in order that I can read the messages. This does not seem to be HAPPENING (but only sometimes) in this case. So, once again it is over to you clever lot to advise please.

I have installed all the drivers from the packaging, but the problem is. Whenever my COMPUTER goes into hibernation mode autoly, I lose the sound and streaming capibility. I can open up the streaming screen but the video stops after every 2 seconds COMPLETELY.

Note* The streaming from youtube and sound works after I restart the PC, but not after hibernation.

I've been wanting to get software to help organize personal finances. I've looked into quicken 2008 deluxe/premier, but wanted to ask before purchasing if you have any recommendation or first HAND experience? I've read some very mixed reviews....many of whom claim the program has bugs...is not user friendly...and a pain. What's your take...and for a newbie do you recommend a manual?

I haven't used all its features, so I don't know if it does check printing and all the cool stuff, but it is ONE example (there are many more!) of financial software that does a GOOD job, and is open-source and free!

I've used Quickbooks Pro 2004 for several years after DUMPING M$ Money and found it much more intuitive.

My wife was USING M$ Money and it kept goofing up on her so I went to eBay and got Quicken 2005 for $5. Works like a charm.

It will take some getting used to but for the money saved (remember $5) and a little time spent learning the program Quicken will do the job.

BTW - if it's just home finances you want to do then I'd recommend doing the eBay thing and getting an earlier version for a MUCH LESSER price as it will do all the things you need. Remember, I'm still using QBPro 2004 and I run my business off of it.

I'm new on this forum and I apologize if I'm ASKING for INFORMATION that has ALREADY been COVERED. My problem, I am using Outlook 2000 for me email program, when I send an email with a file attachment the file is received as a .dat extension file. If I attach files they are normally Word DOCUMENTS or .jpg files. Have I inadvertently changed a setting somewhere. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Right click on your desktop and select Properties. In the Display Properties panel, select Desktop. To the lower right, you'll see a box for "Position:". I'm looking for a program that can add a watermark to images in bulk. This isn't the standard watermark where it is overlayed onto the existing image. I want to be able to add, say, 50px to the bottom of the image canvas and write the watermark there on the new white space.

If I click it to pause the scrolling, then Firefox behaves it's usual self again.

The Barnes & Noble page is the worst case I've experienced, although some other sites with Flash will cause Firefox to spike CPU usage but to a lesser degree. I just went there, and CPU usage STAYS the same. Please help me. I am non-technical & so need answers in plain English please! I am looking for explanations of what the FOLLOWING actually mean when seen in Event Viewer.

1) Under the heading "Source" - tcpip (when I go into Microsoft help it repeats this with a long string of numbers after it, which doesn't leave me much wiser)

2) Under the heading "Event" - 7035; 7036; 6009; 6005; 4; 15.

3) Under the heading "User", as well as my name appearing, there is almost always, simultaneously or almost simultaneously, a parallell event with the user described as N/A.

Most of the entries in event logs are for info only as to what is started and stopped and when this occurs. The info is used to detail what the state of the system was when a major event occurred.

I think this is what you're looking at:

The above is the Application Programs Event Log window, the others which could be displayed cover IE, Security and the System.

So very roughly:
1. Source is the activity which caused the event to be logged.

2. Event (number) is a number to identify the type of event e.g. different services starting/stopping normally could have the same number allocated.

3. User shows the user account name from which the event source entry is triggered. N/A would show when the event has a global affect i.e. it affects all users.

At the top of my Event Log image (above) you will note an Error entry. Clicking on this entry shows the Event Properties window (see the image below) which gives further details of the Event:

In this CASE I know that the program FoxitReader.exe has failed for some reason which could be investigated using the information displayed..

Is there any chance you (or someone else can give me more specific answers to what the "event" numbers actually are - it strikes me they must be standard codes but I would LIKE to know if possible. by the way this a Home Office Networked system with one other computer on it.

SOk, I'll try. The Event number is a number allocated to that event, or even to that event type. As you say it is a standard number used to identify that event or event type.

As you will see in the images at this site clicking on an event in the Event Viewer windows brings up an Event Properties window which refers to that event (you can see that the Event ID matches the Event number - in this case 36).

The bottom two lines in the Event Properties Description pane give the opportunity to get further information using the Help & Support Centre at Microsoft (url). If you click on that, information including the Event Number is sent to MS, a search is made for info on that type of event, and that info is displayed. I have done this with one of my Event Log entries - see the attachment below.

Send one of your events to MS and see if any further info is available. Scroll down to see what action you should take, probably none as in this.. Note that the Event ID 1517 shows here too.

So, to summarise, the Event Number is used by the online MS Help & Support Centre to identify the event, or event type, and provide further info.

I don't know if a complete on-line list of event numbers and information is available but there's a lot of them, the highest number in my Application Event Log is 11729.

Hi again I have a HP Pavilion dv2000 laptop. It's suppose to be bluetooth capable and I can't find a *censored* thing anywhere bluetooth on this laptop. I may have deleted it when I was TRYING to eliminate my laptop of unwanted and unused files/software etc etc thinking I WOULD NEVER have a use for it. I was wondering how I can get it back.

MP.Update. I downloaded the only option that had bluetooth in the description. I loaded it then rebooted. I WENT to control panel and there is still no bluetooth icon to open as it STATES there should be in help.
