Solve : Interesting Virtual PC software?

Answer»

Can you guys list some virtual pc software that can RUN inside java. I cant seem to find any. On this forum the term 'Virtual PC' often means a virtual MACHINE that LETS you run one OS inside another.

Do you mean a VM done mostly in Java?

Java is a virtual machine itself, in a manner of speaking. But nit is not really a Operating System. So the idea of running an operating system in Java code on TOP of another system SEEMS rather odd. Is there some need for this?

During the development of new concepts in computerizing, of in testing new hardware, some sort of emulation or symbolic testing is needed. Tools of that sort are rather specialized.

It is not clear why you want a VM written in Java.

Solve : Trying to turn PDF file into Comma-Delimited file (single file format)?

Answer»

I'm looking for all the help I can get on this.

I have a racing program that runs off of single file data.

I am wondering if I can turn past performance PDF files into these comma delimited files ??

Here is a PDF (click on Free Sample Ultimate PP's)- http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/HTML/samples.html#uwb

Here is a data file (click on Free Sample PP Data Files (single)- http://www.brisnet.com/cgi-bin/HTML/samples.html#drs

Thanks for any and all help on this. I am trying to get something done by Thursday night.

Are the above alternative sources of the data, or what?Yes. I would like to turn that PDF into the Data File.

ThanksWell, I think it will be a laborious process but you could copy the text from the PDF to a text file and then import it into Excel. I think it will be a space-delimited file, not comma-delimited. At least, that's what I see based a 3 lines I copied from one of the PDFs. Here are the 3 lines:

12 - 2 1 9 Dec 02 ECHUC 3yo Mdn Plte 5 5/8 f GD 118- 6 Nicholas R
11 - 11 5 30 Nov 02 M.V. 3yo C&G Hcp 5 f YD 114- 6 M Pumpa
7 - 3 4 19 Nov 02 BALL'T 3yo+ Mdn Plte 5 f GD 123- 5 A Findlay

Note that this will not be a smooth process due to differences in the 3 rows. For example, the 1ST row has "5 5/8" where the 2nd and 3rd rows have just 5. The 3rd row has a + afater 3yo, while the first 2 rows do not. Such differences will complicate the process of importing and parsing the data into columns. But, I may be mis-interpreting what you want to accomplish here. Must it be a DOS batch file?
How much work can be done by hand?
How much data must be processed?
There are tools that will let you process the data in Exell as a spreadsheet. You can use VBA to edit some material. But it is not batch and esquires some USER interaction.
Here is part pf a huge text file I created in a few keystrokes. I think it can be parsed by VBA in Excel. Or something like that.

EDIT: To view the attacked file, use notepad and set the font to Courier 8 with no word WRAP.

I think the test file you posted would not work well. The reason is what I said in my previous post. Parsing a data file in Excel works best when all rows have exactly the same data ELEMENTS, meaning they would all yield the same number of columns when parsed. As I said in my previous post, and as you can see in your test file, there are differences between rows. You also have header rows which complicates the procedure. Right. You can convert it to a nice text file using Foxit Reader. But not all PDF files will allow it. I only TESTED it on one file.
http://foxitsoftware.com/downloads/

Not being up to speed with Python, I would use some dialect of MS basic to parse the lines and put then into some form that is more digestible for Excel.

Of course, you can parse the text with a batch file, it you like doing that kind of thing. Maybe PowerShell would be a better choice.

I think there has to be some user interaction to handle all the exceptions you will get. Otherwise it will be a script with a long list of 'what if' stuff.

Solve : Need software recommendation?

Answer»

I had a trial offer with Norton Internet Security 2012 with my new ciputer which is now expired. I was very hapy with it but can't pay up for the subscription. What is a good free software that I can download and replace it with. Also, I guess I also need a separate firewall?

I have an HP and running Windows 7. Runs great and don't WANT to fill it with junk.

ThxTo name just a few...
Alvira
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
Avast
ComboFix
Microsoft Security Essentials
Malwarebytes

Norton is given lower ratings. But it is not the worst.
Try a free ONE for awhile. Then try another.
Do NOT use two together, unless that is recommended.

Solve : Rearching multiple PDF files?

Answer»

Hello,
I don't have/use Acrobat, but I have lots of pdf files that I have collected.
Many of them are books, History ETC, that I would like to search.
Rather than searching individualy, I'm wondering if there is a Search tool (shareware or something) that will search all of the files at once ?

I'm sure there is; so my questions are these;
1) what is a good one, (good = simple yet robust, easy to set up maintain....)
2) are there any that will do text and text as image, OCR
3) needs to work across many vintages of pdf files

I'm on Vista, and use Reader v10You might try this: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=2611 I have not used it, so I can't COMMENT on its effectiveness. The article mentioned that it started with Reade 7, since I'm on 10 I assume it's bundled in there ??
Is there a way to confirm ?

My biggest issue is with the text as image and some sort of OCR based search....Any thing on the OCR part ?I guess there is no "hope" Quote from: cowboy1611 on October 28, 2011, 07:17:38 AM

I guess there is no "hope"
Right, maybe no hope. Here's something that came up from a Google search on ocr searchable pdf: http://www.scantopdf.eu/scantopdf-plugins-ocr.html Don't know whether it could be a viable solution or not. I think you'll have to dig into this deeper yourself. It not something I've ever delved into during my many years of computing and I suspect this is true for a good many other forum members, too. If you think about what it is that you are asking to HAPPEN you would conclude there is no App that can do it...1.Install Acrobat reader
2.use Windows Search, Google desktop, or another desktop search application
3.Profit!

'IFilters' are implementations of a well-defined interface that has been around since the advent of Windows Desktop Search, and they are used by most desktop search applications, including Google desktop. Basically, they allow the search tool to search the content of what would otherwise be a BINARY file, such as a word document, an Excel spreadsheet, or, in this CASE, a PDF document.

Note that in order for this to work, the PDF must actually be text; I have seen instances where a PDF is actually comprised of images that are embedded in a PDF, which sort of defeats the purpose, and won't work with IFilter's, either.

Adobe has packaged the IFilter implementation in Reader for as long as I can remember.

Solve : AVG?

Answer»

Using AVG freeware on Windows7 HP computer. Keep getting warning the IE us using lots of memory (350meg) and that I should shut down IE and reopen. Never had this problem before. Any help?Maybe you should disable some addons.

http://antivirus.about.com/od/securitytips/ht/ieaddons.htm

Also, do you have a ton of toolbars at the top? What program is generating the warning, Windows or AVG? How much RAM does your computer have?I have 6 meg of RAM and not that many toolbars or open programs. Also, every now and then I get the blue screen and the message says problem with hardware, although it does not stay up long enough to fully read the error message.Upload Dump Files:
Please go to C:\Windows\Minidump and zip up the contents of the folder. Then upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.
Left CLICK on the first minidump file.
Hold down the "Shift" key and left click on the last minidump file.
Right click on the blue highlighted area and select "Send to"
Select "Compressed (zipped) folder" and note where the folder is saved.
Upload that .zip file with your next post.

If you have issues with "Access Denied" errors, try COPYING the files to your desktop and zipping them up from there. If it still won't let you zip them up, post back for further advice.

If you don't have anything in that folder, please check in C:\Windows for a file named MEMORY.DMP. If you find it, zip it up and upload it to a free file hosting service . I RECOMMEND Windows LIVE SkyDrive - http://skydrive.live.com or another free, file-hosting service. Then post the link to it in your topic so that we can download it.

Then, follow the directions here to set your system for Minidumps (much smaller than the MEMORY.DMP file): http://www.carrona.org/setmini.html

Then, I will check out your BSODs. I would not be surprised if AVG is the culprit here.Got rid of AVG but still get FREQUENT crash dump error messages. How do I zip the file to send it to you?Select all of the dumps, and right-click.. select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.

Solve : Where does Word save in Safe Mode??

Answer»

My computer was starting pretty SLOWLY the other day in class so in a hurry i put it into safe mode and USED word to type out my notes for that class. Now that i have it fixed and running fine again, IM just wondering what directory Word would have used in safe mode to save the file?
Under safe mode i just put it under My Documents as my regular folders (sorted by class, lab, etc.) did not show up. I cant find the document under the generic My Documents folder now, im guessing because i had to log on as Administrator in safe mode (though oddly enough my account should have ADMIN privileges as its the only one on here...). Just wondering how i might recover this file or if i have to go back into safe mode and through it external storage or something? Reboot your PC in Safe mode again. Start word. Look for recent documents. Click on File and the menu should have a thing for recent documents. Or it will show some recent documents in the menu.If you could remember KEYWORDS or title from previously saved word docs, filter them by using Windows search bar in Win 7/Vista by opening Windows Explorer. Or in XP, is the search companion(magnifying glass).you may try "recently opened documents" from MS Word. or you may try using search with search in the content.C:\Users\--User--\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\

--User-- being your compute usernameHave you fixed the problem??

Solve : How to overwrite in-game mouse cursor??

Answer»

Hi all, first time post here. Hope someone can help!

I've been playing PC video games most my life, and I'm starting to have difficulty tracking the mouse cursor with my eyes while I play. Many possible explanations for this, from physiological or cognitive degradation, to games these days just being much flashier. Whichever, I'm curious if there's software somewhere out there that can lay a more visible cursor over that which the game's design provides. I'm MOSTLY into RTS's and MMO's, and well... a grey gauntlet isn't exactly the easiest cursor to see when you're dungeon crawling. >>

Any leads?

Try selecting another cursor in Control Panel/Mouse/Properties...

NOTE: the settings will carry over into your games...some will not.
I was looking specifically for something that would overwrite the mouse cursor of the types of games I play: very flashy, full screen environment. The sort of games as would use the Windows cursor, I have no trouble tracking.

On further reflection, I THINK this may be considered mod'ing and PROBABLY against ToS for many online games. Alas. Thanks for the time, though! So did you try the suggestion ? ?
What were the results ? ?
INQUIRING minds want to KNOW...Quote from: patio on October 28, 2011, 08:21:17 PM

So did you try the suggestion ? ?

Inquiring minds want to know...

It wouldn't work. In games such as those they describe the cursor is drawn by the game, not the system.

Although this is no help, You could try looking for options like "use system cursor" or something. It's often very game dependent.

Solve : Nvidia 3d vision?

Answer»

I have got ANOTHER THREAD going somewhere about changing my 3D monitor, but before I do, I just wanted to make sure I am making the right decision. Before I bought this monitor I was told there was a lot of content for for Nvidia 3D vision, but I'm either looking in the wrong place or no such content exists. First of all I was told I would be able to watch YouTube 3D, but wrong, or is it I still don't know if I can because some sites say you can and others say you cannot? Secondly that there were many photos and pictures I could look at, but I haven't found any source ONLINE. The only thing this seems to do is play some games and the ones I have played so far don't look that good. The only thing I have found good so far is when the Nvida logo COMES right out of the screen and feels LIKE it's in front of my face, but it's alot of money to spend just for that. Does anyone know where can I get movies or anymore content for this 3D vision or I'll have no option but to send it back. Thankyou!!

Solve : Excel:CuttingPastedImages - DeletingRows vsColumns & Saving Multiple Sheet Files?

Answer»

Excel (2003)
3 Questions

I often copy & paste images from the internet to decorate my personal files.

On my BUDGET spreadsheet I copy & pasted my bank's logo, deleting the hyperlink. At the end of a budget period I copy and paste the logo onto a new line and create the budget. After a number of budgets I delete old lines (rows).

One day I changed the logo image I use. When I deleted old lines I saw the old image was still there. I cut the image and it was still there. I cut it again, and again, and again, and realized when I deleted old lines the image stayed put - I had to cut it before deleting the row. I had a lot of cutting to do before I deleted the whole "stack" of images.

I also use Excel for files that have nothing to do numbers. For my daily things-to-do list I created a template of 7 columns (1 week). I copy & pasted an image from the internet to decorate the first row of each column. (It's the same image for each column.)

To create a new week's worth of to-do lists, I copy & paste the 7 template columns onto the next 7 columns. At the end of the week I copy & paste another 7 columns, review the previous 7 to see if there's anything I need to transfer to the new week, then delete the previous 7.

Occasionally I copy & paste images from the internet to represent activities on my list. If the activity goes on for a while it will get copy & pasted from one column to another a lot, and the image will get moved up or down the spreadsheet as I rearrange the order I want to do things on a given day.

One day I noticed images staying put and realized I had to cut them before deleting the column.

At present I have the image that decorates line 1 of each used column of the spreadsheet, and another image that will occupy a specific line of each used column for some time, so I have included that image on the template as well. There are also two images that I cut and paste from column to column day by day.

At any time, the most text information I have on the spreadsheet is 21 columns of 10 lines, with one of those columns having up to 50 lines. Not a lot of information, but one day this spreadsheet starting s l o w i n g d o w n. Click on a cell and it takes t i m e to highlight. Click to generate a menu to cut or paste or change font type or size, and it takes t i m e to generate the list, click the function you wish to use and it takes time to highlight, it takes time for the change to occur. The same is true if you want to insert a line, delete a line, etc. It can take 30 seconds to save, and close to a minute to close.

I've been cutting the special image day by day, but never gave a thought to the image on line 1. Testing by cutting any image in any column reveals that none of the images are actually "stacked". Cut an image once, and it's cut, there's nothing "underneath".

So, Question #1 is: Is there any difference between deleting columns and rows in terms of the copy & pasted images getting deleted along with the column or row?

Question #2 is: Why do some images get deleted when the column is deleted and some don't?

I had about 7 other small worksheets in this file, none of them numerical. Thinking these spreadsheets might contribute to slowing the saving/closing time I moved some to another file. There are 4 left, at most 10 columns wide by 20 lines long. One has 5 cut and pasted images, and one has 4 CELLS with website links. Nothing heavy content wise in any of these spreadsheets, though briefly speed did increase when I LOWERED the number of spreadsheets.

Question #3: Is this spreadsheet possessed? Do you think I have a virus in this spreadsheet?
I EXPERIMENTED by recreating the worksheet without copying and pasting: seven columns, about 10 cells of text each.

Looking at the new spreadsheet I noticed the old one was more than 30 times the size in kb, a much greater amount than I would have expected for a spreadsheet apparently holding very little information.

I copied and pasted the small images I had originally gotten from the internet onto a blank Word document. From Word I copied and pasted the images onto my new spreadsheet.

I copied and pasted the first seven columns of the new spreadsheet onto the next 7 columns, and typed in all the information (about 20 cells of text) from the old spreadsheet onto the new - no copying and pasting.

I copied and pasted those 7 columns onto the next 7, then deleted the 7 columns I had just copied by highlighting the top row and doing "delete columns". I did this 3 more times, saved, closed the file and checked the number of kb's. Instead of staying the same, the amount of kb's had gone up.

I copied, pasted, and deleted the 7 columns again, 4 times, by selected the columns instead of the top row of cells, and the number of kb's still went up.

I tried copying and pasting and cutting pictures one by one, 4 times, and the kb's went up.

I tried copying and pasting then "deleting contents" before deleting the columns, did that 4 times, and the kb's still went up.

After many more iterations I noticed a thin red line at the left side of one of my cells. I clicked it and dragged it and it was one of my pictures, and the line was still there. I clicked it and dragged it and the red line was still there, proof positive that whether you delete rows or columns, images do not get deleted with the other contents. I hadn't noticed this on my original spreadsheet because it's the first 7 columns, not the second 7, that I actually copy and paste, and the original 7 columns carry only 1 copy of each image. The space I'm pasting into actually has many copies of the images, but they're compressed.

So I tried clicking on each picture and going through Format, Properties to change to don't move with cells, but this is not a happy solution because I want 1 iteration to be copied and then be deleted when I delete the column.

There seems to be only a choice of accumulating stacks of images or not copying the pictures.

I have never engaged in such heavy use of images in Excel, so I'll just make a general comment. I think you're creating some problems by doing so much copying/inserting of images into Excel. If you could limit the use of images to header areas in your worksheets, as opposed to using them on many rows below the header area, I think you'd have a less problem-prone procedure.

On a technical point, if you want to CONTINUE this practice, resizing your images with Paint or an image editor before using them in Excel might help.

Solve : lsass error plus registry corrupted?

Answer»

Problem 1: on windows startup i get the following message "Isass.exe - "invalid parameter passed to service or function" " it then reboots

Problem 2: when asked for adminstrator PASSWORD in recovery console, i press enter because i know the password is blank and its says "invalid password". However, earlier in the day i was able to access the recovery console as it didn’t’ prompt me for an administrator password

Initially the computer wouldn’t go past the opening DOS screen as it said the \windows\system32\config file was corrupted and only gave me the option to enter recovery console where I followed the following instructions.

This involved typing the following commands into the recovery console:
PART 1.
md tmp
copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\tmp\software.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\sam c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\security c:\windows\tmp\security.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\default c:\windows\tmp\default.bak

delete c:\windows\system32\config\system
delete c:\windows\system32\config\software
delete c:\windows\system32\config\sam
delete c:\windows\system32\config\security
delete c:\windows\system32\config\default

copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system
copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config\software
copy c:\windows\repair\sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam
copy c:\windows\repair\security c:\windows\system32\config\security
copy c:\windows\repair\default c:\windows\system32\config\default

PART 2.
Copy ‘snapshot’ registry files from \system volume information\ to \windows\tmp\

After completing Parts 1 and Part 2 of these instructions I tried to enter the recover console again to do Part 3 which is when it started asking for an Administrator password. So I tried to open up Windows (just to see if it would let me in this time) and i received the following message when windows starts up
"Isass.exe - "invalid parameter passed to service or function" "

I then went back into the recovery console to redo the instructions however when it asks for the administator password (which is just blank" a message comes up saying "the password is invalid"

I do have a Hiren disk that can run a mini XP os and tried to install SP3 to try to fix at least part of this problem but it won’t let me from this environment.. I have USED the Hiren disk to clear the Administrator password but this has achieved nothing

I have tried using windows xp recovery disc as well as a Windors XP os disc to repair but it hasnt worked. Every time i boot up windows starts installing and then the message comes up "invalid parameter passed to service or function" and it says windows SETUP cannot finish and it reboots

It seems that by going into the recovery console and changing registery files it caused the problem. Then the problem with Isass.exe seems to corrupt user logon validation hence the problem with the recovery console.
I managed to copy over the registry files to the \windows\system32\config\ folder from the \windows\tmp\ folder and the computer opened up into Windows when I restarted (YEAH). Do I have to still restore back to a previous point (this is Part 4 of the instructions)? I am worried that it will kill the computer again! Just running a VIRUS scan over the C drive again while I contemplate the next move as the scan run in the mini XP mode found 8 x dodgy registry files. 2 things:

What happens if you simply hit Enter at the passworf prompt ? ?

And...what protection apps are you scanning with ? ?
There are variants of lsass out there that mask as infections...If I push 'enter' it tells me that the password is invalid and gives me another 2 x tries before it restarts. In the end I got around this by copying over the registry files via the 'mini XP' os that is available through the Hiren CD. As lsass.exe can be a trojan I did run a virus scan over it a few times and it picked up quite a few problems (including a couple of trojans). Have sent it home to it's owner with the instructions to run the scan a few more times over the next few days until it stops picking up problems. Am using SuperAntiSpyware.

I input something I had to do and only the beginning shows. Looked for truncate option....Don't see it.Try Sunbird instead...Pat ,

Is sunbird in firefox or should I google it.

TksIt's a standalone app///compatible with both FireFox and Thunderbird which makes it very handy...Would a calendar Gadget be sufficient or do you want something more elaborate?Just your very basic home calendar where you can input reminders, holidays, BIRTHDAYS in the box provided for each date and be able to print it out. lol Nothing fancy at all. I've already told you, sorry if I got mistaken on the last part it was a Director not Editor, but is it enough to mock or say those words? I'm not a computer expert, a program running was good enough for me and doesn't bother remembering the name because of the tons of project and thesis that I was making for months now

Sorry, meant no offense. I was just joking around.Quote from: Zachriel on October 25, 2011, 01:45:24 AM
Yes, I've USED it and deleted the file but I still can't re-install it to try if the program was gone

This does not make any SENSE. If its gone, why would you want to re-install to 'check' if its gone.

If you have un-installed something that was on trial, you WILL NOT be able to re-install it, so that you can carry on using it. The trial has ENDED, now you have to buy it. Quote from: Zachriel on October 25, 2011, 01:45:24 AM

Run CCleaner - http://www.piriform.com/CCLEANER
And RegSofts - http://www.regsofts.com/

Ensure when using CCleaner, that you untick any version of Office under the Applications tab ... or it will lose all your icons for Office.

Then try to reinstall the program.REGISTRY cleaners can do more harm than good, so lets skip RegSofts and stick to CCleaner. I will endorse using the Registry cleaner in CCleaner as well as it's file Cleaner. I say this because CCleaner has a solid reputation for being a safe registry cleaner and, in situations like this, a registry cleaner can be helpful because the cause of problems like this one are sometimes caused by registry issues. If you run CCleaner's Registry cleaner, you can either let it fix all items found or you can selectively look for entries related to a Cyberlink program and REMOVE only them. I would let it remove all entries it finds but that's your call. CCleaner will prompt you to backup your registry before executing the removal of registry entries and doing the backup is always a good idea.

Solve : Looking for a copy program?

Answer»

Hi All,
I need to COPY a lot of FILES from one folder to ANOTHER across my network. My problem is that the files are about 6 folders deep and some of the folders don't have any file when you open it. For example

source\folder\folder\folder\folder\3 or 4 IMAGE files
or it could be
source\folder\folder\folder\folder\empty

What I need is to copy or move the folders and files if they have files while using the same folders names. So the source has to be checked to see if there is some files in the end of the sub folders. If it has files I need to copy or move to another location with the same sub folders.

In short I need to do a merge with some exsisting folders and files but to not bring over the empty folders.

Anyone have any ideas for some free software that could do this?

Thanks

Try this links http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/system/fwfilemanagement.html

XCopy /T copies everything but empty directories.

Solve : win 7 disc ruined?

Answer»

I have made copies of Win 7 DVD and they worked fine.

I have also used the cream to bring a CD back to life. It is sort of like toothpaste. It has a little grit to it and polishes the disk. I made a backup copy of as soon as I could read it.

Re COMMENTS on "repairing" damaged cd/dvd discs. I had read/heard some time back (WISH i could be more precise -but that memory thing impedes) that the more difficult damage to deal with is a scratch not on the read side of the disc but on the other side. Having something to do with the laser light reflection inability of a non reflective point where the scratch is. Others may have had experience with that and the O/P doesn't mention which side is damaged.truenorthJust wanted to mention that as far as Windows 7 goes, my friend lost his Win 7 disc for Home Premium. I was able to use my Win 7 Home Premium Disc on his machine for clean build and then use the Win 7 key on the outside of his HP tower and it activated without any problems. So if you have a friend with the same exact version of 7 as you, you can try this. My copy of 7 btw was not one that came as a restore disc with a new computer. It was a oem clean corporate type 7 disc without all the bloatware that computer companies add to new system builds.

BTW... Make sure your drive is no longer grinding disc's before your friends disc goes in. Guessing you replaced this drive?Quote from: DaveLembke on October 22, 2011, 08:09:02 PM

So if you have a friend with the same exact version of 7 as you, you can try this.

In fact all Windows 7 install disks are identical. It's your key that determines what version gets installed on your PC.

That would include device drivers for a specific brand and model computer, right? So, using it with another computer, even though it may successfully install the OS, may leave some driver issues to resolve, right? soybean your correct... They would likely have to track down the non GENERIC drivers like WIFI NIC etc that dont normally come bundled with oem OS. Thanks for stating that for the user to be aware of.

And Salmon ... good to KNOW about 7 discs all being the same and the key being what determines the version. About time MS did this. As for with XP etc it was disc specific, and also with XP, some keys would work with some disc's and not all, almost like the discs were created in batches with supported keys ( prior to MS live activation for Final Approval or Disapproval of a bootleg or too many activations ) I got lucky with a few computers where the XP Pro oem disc would take the initial key from say the Dell key on the panel during the build process while have also run into some that come up as invalid key on some HP's etc. Nice to know that this issue should be gone with Win 7.Quote from: soybean on October 23, 2011, 10:35:32 AM

Eh, I think this may vary, depending on the manufacturer. I believe - indeed, I'm almost absolutely sure - the recovery disc I have for my Compaq laptop will install drivers as well as the OS. Here's a reference which supports my view: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recovery_disc Quote from the article:

"Due to the recovery discs containing all the APPLICATIONS and drivers for a computer, many manufacturers are omitting copies of product CDs in favor of the single recovery system to prevent unauthorized distribution of preloaded software, as the recovery media is usually locked to the computer it came with."Quote from: soybean on October 24, 2011, 09:58:31 AM

I believe I understand the distinction you're making. Yes, if I buy an OEM Windows disc from a seller such as newegg.com, I would be getting only the OS. I would then need to take additional action to obtain and install device drivers. On the other hand, a recovery disc from a manufacturer will typically include an OEM version of Windows and device drivers and perhaps other software that was installed on a computer when new. If I use the recovery disc for my Compaq laptop, it will install the OS, drivers, and various software that HP had installed on it when new.

Solve : Convert X To DVD 4 question.?

Answer»

I just completed a project which includes 3 video files using Convert X To DVD 4. When you place the DVD into the player you are brought to the Title Menu which lists the 3 video files you can choose to play. There is one problem though, once you load any of the videos and hit the menu button your brought to some strange sub menu for the title your currently viewing with the option to "Play" or the "Menu" option. I want to be able to go right back to the title screen that appears when you load the DVD into the player not this other sub screen. There are dozens of Video to DID programs. So it is had to say just what the problem is. It should not be hard, but it is.
Your PROGRAM should have a way to preview the menus before you burn.

This article is a good tutorial, if that is what you need.

I deleted those 2 sticky notes using the METHOD you suggest by clicking the X on the top-right of the sticker, and successfully. But the messages are still found on my start menu's "Run" search by typing in sticky, just those 2 ones. I tested by typing in more stickies and deleting them, and they did not glitch. Just those 2 sticky notes I deleted in the past are stuck on my start menu. I even downloaded and ran ccleaner as you suggested but nothing changed. I'm really at a loss of what to do. Solve : Acer Aspire 5920g - operating system?

Hi guys,
I have an Acer Aspire 5920g with Vista.
I would like to install an operating system that is light, fast (priority) and as stable as poss.
Would you recommend W7 or XP for this pc?
I will use it for stuff like chrome, skype, vlc, office (word and excel), megamanager, itunes and to play wow. No autocad or photoshop stuff.
so XP or W7? can you tell me what are the advantages and disadvantages of having either of these 2 OS installed on this particular pc?
thank you advance!
g.I'm not a gamer so I'm not sure how a particular OS would affect your game play. Regarding the other computer usage you mentioned, I see no reason to change from Vista.

For the benefit of continuing this discussion for everyone here in the forum, please state the basic hardware specs for your computer.

Windows 7 is much faster than vista, I had a few sluggish brand-new vista machines, installing windows 7 made them very fast.
GAMING - So long as their are win 7 drivers for your graphics there might be a slight increase (vista drivers should work, but less stable and less performance)
XP - I no longer use this at all, due to the difference in security between it and vista / 7.Quote from: immental1200 on October 18, 2011, 09:14:18 AM
Windows 7 is much faster than vista, I had a few sluggish brand-new vista machines, installing windows 7 made them very fast.
Well, I have a laptop computer, purchased in July 2007, with Vista, and I've never seen much need to upgrade to Windows 7 for "stuff like chrome, skype, vlc, office (word and excel)". I have Windows 7 on another computer and it's my favorite OS but, again, Vista has worked fine on the laptop for Office 2007, web browsing, email, and some other non-gaming apps. HI Everyone,
thanks for replies and sorry if I have not replied for so many days but having being travelling and moving out....
I am a bit confused... someone says stay with vista others switch to W7.
My pc specs:
Intel core 2 duo processor T7300 (2.0 GHZ, 800 mhz FSB, 4mb L2 cache)
15.4 WXGA Acer CrystalBrite tim LCD (8ms / 220 nit)
Up to 1024 MB nvidia GeForce 8600M GT TurboCache tim
2gb DDR2
802 11a/b/g WLAN
I hope this is what immental ASKED to post...

Before this pc I had an hp with less ram and XP.
By buying a more powerful pc and with a newer os I thoght I would have a faster and more powerful machine.... I was wrong it was slower, it felt like a dinosaur!
Maybe in the meantime vista has got much better, otherwise i would happily switch to something that is more agile and faster...
So stay with Vista or switch to W7?
Thanks
G.Quote

Sure, you should not be surprised to get different opinions. I don't understand the "dinosaur" comment; your laptop should be faster than mine. But, since you felt that this computer felt like a dinosaur with Vista, I'll go along with immental1200 here with recommending Windows 7.

yes, i tried adjusting the screen resolution. things just don't quite look right, as if they could be sharper and clearer. i tried installing the driver it recommended and it did that but then said that it wasn't activated and i don't know how to activate itThe window that pops up when it finds the driver, near the bottom on the right there is an activate button. Click it. You will be prompted for your PASSWORD. That should be it.

You will have to RESTART the computer once you do this.

Chrome is designed to run each TAB's memory seperately, I.E. I could have a very memory intensive game open (Backyard Monsters on Facebook is a decent example, the Flash player is what skyrockets in memory USAGE...) and that tab would be the only slow one, the others would be fine. If you want to get those tabs back and have a quick list of all tabs you've closed, TRY Sexy Undo Tab. I'm up to 4000 closed tabs (most are Facebook, Youtube, and various forums)

Solve : Got My PC Restored, So Which Programs Do I Delete??

Answer»

I was a bit upset that I got my PC back, new hardrive, motherboard, and all.
Only to find it already had a bunch of programs on there.
I have a Sony VAIO, with Microsoft Vista.

These are the programs it came LOADED with. Which of these can I delete?:

-Gametap
-Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer
-MobiTV
-AOL Internet Services
-Corel Pain Shop Pro Phone XL
-Corel Snapfire
-Extras and Upgrades
-Grouper
-Image Converter 3
-Napster
-Norton
-Quickbooks free starter
-Sonic Stage
-Sonic Stage Mastering Studio
-Webroot
-Windows Defender
-LiveUpdate 3.3 (symnatec)
-SpySweeper

I was going to download:

1) AVG...ran first scan
2) Super ANTI-spyware
3) MBAM
4) Spywareblaster
5) CCleaner and defrag
6) WOT safe browsing tool
7) Comodo firewall

So I assume I can delete all that crap they pre-loaded which I posted, including:
-Norton
-Symnatec
-Windows Defender
-Napster

and disable windows firewall.

Am I correct, install AVG and get rid of pre-loaded norton and other security programs? You should only have 1 anti virus app installed. It's your choice which (Norton or AVG). As for uninstalling programs, feel free to uninstall whatever you like, but unless you're going to be low on DISC space there's really no advantage to doing so (except for the second AV, of course). And to disable Windows Defender just set the Windows Defender service to Disabled. How do you do that?
All it says now is windows defender is TURNED off, so I guess I am set?Not necessarily. Go to START - RUN and enter: services.msc (then press ENTER)
Find the Windows Defender service and set it to DISABLEDYou only need one anti-virus...having too many causes them to 'run into' each other, thus causing problems with your pc, and possibly major ones in the LONG run. I would reccomend getting rid of Norton. It basically takes over your pc, and deletes files or programs without asking, especcially on usb's and external HDD's. AVG is much easier, and user friendly, it always double checks with the user before doing things such as deleting stuff. There is a free and paid version, anyone of them does the job

Solve : OS independant portability??

Answer» I also read something about Java Portable (Jportable, by PortableApps.com).
In fact I could run a .bat (on windows ofc) USING the JRE/JDK on my stick. The same goes for linux/unix (a bash script), and mac also has bash, I suppose...
Like mentioned here in general, here and here for linux and here for windows.

In that way I should have java in my pocket. I'm only dependant on the shells (like msdos and Bourne Again SHell), but since those platforms always COME with these there's no problem at all.

Now I just need to get it to work. I'll first write my program, then TEST the portable java stuff and then I'll come BACK to here =)
Good move. Java or some equilateral will be around for awhile.
You may have heard, Sun/Oracle tried to make part of Java Open SOURCE. It was an attempt to get more people into Java.

Solve : Looking for Advice on Adobe Photoshop Elements 9?

Answer»

This is only my second post on this website so, if I would do better to ASK my question in another forum, I would welcome advice to that effect.

I have recently bought Photoshop Elements 9 and I'm struggling to get to grips with it despite having bought a couple of books on the subject (I've found the USERS manual that comes with the software somewhat UNHELPFUL). Prior to buying this software, I stored my photos in 'Windows Photo Gallery' - I'm running Internet Explorer 9 on Windows Vista 64 bit, Premiun Home Edition. In PSE9, images are fiirst imported from your camera either directly or VIA a digital CARD reader into 'Organizer' were they are stored, and subsequently worked on. However, I have been unable to find any instructions anywhere on how I might import my photos from 'Windows Photo Gallery' into 'Organizer', or establish if this is even possible.

Any advice and/or comments would be much appreciated.
Many thanks

Now this may sound dumb, but it is not a joke. One primitive way to get stuff into you organizer is like antis:
1.) Get snuff of the camera. erase all images on the camera.
2) With the camera still connected, open up My computer or just Computer and locate the drive or icon that represents the camera.
3 ) Drag and drop images from then other place, 'Windows Photo Gallery' onto the camera memory.

After that, discount the camera, wait a few seconds, plug it back in and load the images into photoshop. Just might work.Windows Live Photo gallery seems to merely list the files in well known locations.

Point Organizer towards the "My Pictures" folder, that should work.

Solve : Most Trusted Anti-Virus Software?

What is the most TRUSTED anti-virus program on the planet today?noneIt should be mostly recommended antivirus,Free or Paid. A lot of recent threads have been discuss so, you might wanna check some by going to the search box or directly to FAQ/Virus and Spyware Section.MSE + SUPERAntiSpyware + Malwarebyes = protected.

EDIT: Add WOT for good measure.May as well add WINPATROL to that as well....everything else is exactly what i use now...Quote from: theng on October 12, 2011, 11:25:59 PM

... the most trusted ...?
I don't know and I don't anybody here can support a claim of a certain Anti-Virus Software being the most trusted. I think there are quite a few good ones to chose from, so I wouldn't be obsessed with trying to find the "most trusted". I've been using avast! Antivirus Free for some months, almost a year with Windows 7, and am very pleased with it. Quote from: patio on October 13, 2011, 06:43:39 AM

But "These are not the most trusted anti-virus programs."...

Primary: Microsoft Security Essentials (real-time protection enabled)
Secondary: SUPERAntiSpyware (backup)
Tertiary: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (backup)

additional: Windows Firewall, Web Of TRUST, CCleaner, Trend Micro HijackThis

Desktop

Secondary: SUPERAntiSpyware (backup)
Tertiary: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (backup)

additional: Comodo Firewall, Web Of Trust, CCleaner, Trend Micro HijackThisccleaner has nothing to do with anti-virus or anti-malware

HiJack this should not be used by anyone who dues not FULLY understand how to use it and the implications of deleting items with HJT

SuperAntiSpyware and MalwareBytes are not anti-spyware apps - they are anti-malware apps. As indicated above, they can (and should) be used in conjunction with a good anti virus application.

Solve : Windows NT Symbols Setup?

Answer»

I just finished installing Visual Studio 6 and it told me that it left some .dbg files for Windows NT Symbols Setup to handle, but when I ran it it SAYS:
"The version of the file 'USER32.DBG' does not match the corresponding dll on your machine. Do you want to copy it?"

I'm just curious what I'm supposed to do, because I don't want to cause any conflicts with my computer. You said you are using Windows XP. You should get that message only from the Windows NT DISC.
Anyway, You can ignore the error and it will work.
OR
You can go ahead and install the correct dll and it will work.
Quote

The Windows NT 3.51 CD-ROM compact disc contains an incorrect version of the User32.dbg file.
Source: Windows Knowledge Base.

Yeah, but the message comes up for ALL the .dbg files...The last time I used Visual Studio 6 I was using Windows 2000, I THINK. So I can not directly help you. It may be that you have install other programs that include some files from the C++ library. They C++ fies would be newer.
One WAY to verify this is to find a PC that never has had NET or C++ on it and see if Visual Studio 6 will install without those errors.

Do you really need Visual Studio 6?

EDIT Others reading this thread may wish to see tis article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Visual_Studio
Visual Studio 6 is now a very old product. Visual studio 210 Express is free for educational USE. It doesn't matter if you copy them. Since they don't match, it won't use them.Ok, thanks BC.

Solve : Kindle?

Kindle for PC.First, let me say I have never used Kindle for PC.
But according to Amazon’s download instructions, if you don’t have Wi-Fi you can download books to your PC and transfer them to your Kindle via a USB cable.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=200375630
[See “To download items archived on Amazon.com to your computer”.

If you are using the Kindle for PC program, I would guess you could download your book to your computer through your prepaid modem and open the file using the program. If you try this, let us KNOW if it works.

I think Kindle requires Wi-Fi only because it doesn’t have a network connector.
I don't own a Kindle, so I may not be able to help as much as those who do...

Fees for transfer of personal documents to the Kindle via Whispernet are based on the size of the file submitted (before compression if you use a .zip file), your country, and where you're accessing Whispernet. Fees will only be charged for documents that are successfully received wirelessly to your Kindle. (Personal Document Service is not available via Whispernet in Canada. Please see Sending Personal Documents to Kindle for information about e-mailing personal documents to your computer for USB transfer to your Kindle.)
 • Kindle (U.S. Wireless) user: We'll send personal documents to your Kindle via Whispernet while inside the U.S. wireless coverage area for a fee of $.15 per megabyte.
 • Kindle (Free 3G) user living in the United States: If you transfer personal documents to your Kindle via Whispernet while inside the United States, the fee is $ .15 per megabyte. When TRAVELING outside the United States, a fee of $.99 per megabyte will apply.
 • Kindle (Free 3G) user living outside the United States: We'll send personal files to your Kindle via Whispernet for a fee of $ .99 (USD) per megabyte anywhere in the world you access Whispernet service.
Fees are rounded up to the next whole MB and apply to each personal document delivered via Whispernet to each Kindle. You can transfer personal documents to your Kindle via USB for free at anytime.

I guess it would be more cost-effective to download the books onto your computer via your prepaid modem on your computer and then copy them to your Kindle via a USB cable.

As I understand it, you don't need wifi to download and read books ON YOUR PC. And, my understanding is that you can read two ways on a PC; one way is to download Kindle for PC (free) or you can read via web browser by using the CHROME or Safari browser.

Solve : Onscreen Font Size in Outgoing Emails Is Too Small?

Answer»

Here's a weird deal.

Outlook 2007, Win 7. (Colleagues computer)

When he composes an Outlook message, the font size appears too small onscreen. It's set for 11 points, but appears as about 7 points onscreen. When he sends the message, it appears correct on the recipient side. When he prints Sent Items, they are correct.

All menus, etc., appear correctly. Other Office programs appear correctly. Incoming messages appear correctly. It is only the typeface appearance inside messages being composed onscreen in Outlook.

(Note on incoming messages: They're fine. When he hits "Reply", everything shrinks - not just what he's typing, but everything being quoted from the original.)

This just started happening yesterday. Yes, he's rebooted. I am running an identical laptop and software configuration and am not seeing this.

"System Restore" is not an option - there are no Restore Points newer than today. Here us a possible wraparound. Backup all the settings and emails of Outlook 7 . Next, remove Outlook 7 and install it again. Then restore the settings and email.

Maybe a better idea would be to create a new user account. Install Outlook 2010 in the new account. Import the settings and email from the other account that has 2007.Hmmm. Unfortunately I'm not the Admin, so I can't do Option 1.

And we don't have 2010, so I can't do Option 2.

We can "escalate" this to a CORPORATE "help" desk, but that takes days for response, etc. We will suggest Option 1, but that doesn't mean I'm not ready to read more, other suggestions.

Have you a suspicion on cause? My suspicion is that it is an internal error in the software. I do not think there is something that makes the on screen font non-sizable. If the Fonts were defective, you would see it in some other area. Well, you can use plain text instead of rich text. But that would be obvious. You con not, I believe, change font size in plain text.
As I understand your post, when you change the font size in a message to be sendt the screen still shows the same size and does not render the change in size. But the recipient gets the Rich Text with large font. Is that correct?

Surely you have done all the obvious things. SELECT all the text, pick a larger font. Try a different Font. Try Bold and Italic o see if it renders c correctly.

Did you say this started rjusts a few days ago?

This is new from Microsoft and may APPLY to you.
How to install the individual 2007 Office features or to repair the installed 2007 Office programs

Quote from: Geek-9pm on October 10, 2011, 02:37:16 PM

when you change the font size in a message to be sendt the screen still shows the same size and does not render the change in size.

Not exactly, but it may be semantics.

Outlook's default here - at least on this machine - is 11 pt. Calibri in HTML.

The recipient receives an email in 11 pt. Calibri.

What appears on my colleague's screen is about 7 pt. You know how in Word or Excel, there's a slider in the lower right-hand corner that reduces or enlarges the text? It's like he's reduced the text - but only in his "typing" window.

I knew this was going to be impossible to describe accurately!

It's an issue because it's hard for him to read onscreen. If he increases the font size so he can read it, it means that the recipient is getting something like 16 pt. text - which is ridiculous.

I will try to get some screenshots up later tonight.

Thanks for the article - will take a look.

rjbTry this. Open Outlook and select the Mail view. Go to Tools, Options, and select the Mail Format tab. Click the Stationary and Fonts button. Click the Font button for New mail messages and set the font STYLE and size there. Did that help? When the message is transmitted/received, it's the correct font size. All indications onscreen are that it's the correct font size. It's only the way the text appears in the OUTGOING that's wrong. I don't have my colleagues computer with me tonight, so I can't try the "Mail Format" option, but it doesn't wreak similar havoc on mine.

So here are some screenshots.

This is a message I sent FROM my good computer, TO my colleague's:

Link to picture (for full-size).

When it arrived on his computer, all was Fonzie:

Link to picture (for full-size).

But when you click "Reply", notice how the text (and the picture) all of a sudden appear really, really small - even though the toolbars, etc. remain "normal":

Link to picture (for full-size).

And, then, what it comes through on my Outlook, it looks totally fine again:

Link to picture (for full-size).

Weird, I think.
New Message =>

Format Text =>

ZOOM

Maintains previous settings, but only on outgoing messages.

So I answered my own question, and could have spared all the time with screenshots! Oh, well!

Thanks!

Solve : Some strange black bars bug?

Answer»

Hello people! I dont really know how to describe this, take a look http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/6981/bug2r.jpg . Has any of you encountered somethink like this before?
What you should know is that if I start a game lets say, it fixes. If I drag an icon it fixes again, as you can see in the location near the incons on my desktop. This doesnt happen often, my video card is ATI Raedon HD 5770. The rest of the computer specs I have written in my avatar box.have a look here: http://forums.techarena.in/guides-tutorials/1355799.htm

Nevermind. I don't think that's RIGHT anymore. lolHave you upgraded your video drivers recently? Did you make any CHANGES to the computer right before this started happening? Like install a program or change any settings.Well.. the AMD VISION Engine Control Center says I have all updates required. I kind of think this happens when I watch youtube clips, because sometimes my computer crashes while I watch them. So I updated adobe and java. But still, that didnt remove the problem.Try removing and re-seating your vid card with all power to the PC removed...Will just plugging off my pc for lets say an HOUR do it? Because I havent really removed it before... I might mess something up.Quote from: br3akth3w1nd on October 07, 2011, 01:40:26 PM

Will just plugging off my pc for lets say an hour do it?

No. It looks as if the video card is either faulty or not properly seated. If you do not feel confident to try re-seating it yourself, try to find a technically experienced friend to help you or take it to a repair shop. Another thing to consider is overheating. Is the fan on the video card turning?
Yes, the fan is turning and I have control over it. Ive set it to auto right now, but when I yank it to 100% its like a jet engine Altho I never NEVER hear any sound from it when its on auto. Even when I play games like sc2 that make the card generate a lot of heat.So what are you going to do?
One wonders...

This may go on for awhile...Well ok its done. I took out and put in the card by myself AND EVERYTHING IS WORKING!! for now. Okay, its just a matter of time until we find out if this works.Keep an eye on it and make sure you tightened the screw properly. (Not too much!)

There is a thing called "thermal ratcheting" that sometimes happens. This is where a card or memory module warms up and expands and rises up a little in its slot. When it cools down it sinks down again but doesn't quite go back to where it was before. EVENTUALLY it will have moved up enough to cause contact problems. Therefore a prudent owner will gently press the card down from time to time, especially if they have had something like this happen.
Whoa thanks, I didnt even know that could happen. I havent had any problems since I took it out and placed it back in, but I will always remember to check the screw and push it a little every time I clean my computer

Solve : Microsoft word is eating my files!?

Answer»

Ok, so maybe not, but I don't know where they are going! First, I believe I am using Word 2007, but not sure how to check to make sure that that is correct....

Second, here is what happened. I had a number of documents in a zip file, using Express Zip. I opened from Express Zip, edited, saved by hitting the blue disk, and exited out of that document. I did this on thirteen documents. NONE of the thirteen saved in the zip file or in the folder location that they were in. So where did they save to?

I tried doing a search and I found one of the edited in C/Users/myname/appdata/local/TEMP/foldername/docname but I can not find this location...

HELP please!!! This is what the user interface of Word 2007 LOOKS like:

Windows already has built-in support for zipping and unzipping files, so I don't see the need for Express Zip.
If you edit a document and then hit the save button, the document should already have its changes written to it...
If you create a new document and hit "Save As," then save it on your hard drive, can you view the document after CLOSING and reopening Word?Yes, that is what mine looks like.

If there is a built in zip function, I am unaware of how to use it...

What I did was double click the file from Express, make changes, click the blue disc, and exit. It wasn't until this morning after I sent the zipped file to my client did I realize that edits did not take. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Compress-and-uncompress-files-zip-files
This is how to use the built-in zip file utility that comes with Windows XP and above.

I see! By opening the file from directly inside Express, you were unzipping the file to a temporary directory-so when you saved the file, you saved it to the temporary directory, and no changes were committed to the zip file. You should unzip the word document(s) onto your hard drive, edit and save it, then re-zip it for your changes to be effective.Could you tell me how to find the edited documents in my temp folder? Solve : Record sound????

Answer»

Hi guys...
I was wondering if you could recommend me a great AUDIO RECORDER?
something similar to audacity.
Thank you for your help! What problems do you have Audacity? you could always use Windows's built in sound recorder: Start>Run>sndrec32. What are your exact requirements for an audio recorder? i indeed have a problem with it thats why i was wondering for other programs, funny u guessed that
i dont have any special requirement for recording audio just something simple...very simple...
the thing with audacity is that when i try to record, it wont record any sound, i have tried to change the settings and everything....IM just tired of that program

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/app_soundrecorder.mspx?mfr=true

have you tried the above link? are the drivers for the sound card INSTALLED properly? is the audio input on Audacity set to "Microphone?"My personal favorite (of a great number tried) is CD Burner XP http://cdburnerxp.se/en/download . It is free and extremely simple to use. It does NOT have all the BELLS and whistles of sound manipulation (like audio studio effects) but if simplicity and reliability are your goals this is it. truenorththank for that link i havnt used the Microsoft one yet...
yeah the drivers and the sound card and yes the input is on microphone...cause i tried with the others and microphone is the only one working...
thanks again for ur helptruenorth interesting, i will try that THANK YOUUU Microphone is NOT the best way to try and record sound (UNLESS it is from a voice source. It is too susceptible to deterioration factors such as ambient NOISE and fluctuations. If it is the only port on your sound card that is functioning (hard to understand why that would be) then you need to change the sound card.truenorth

Solve : Dell Studio17 Driver problems after re-install?

Answer»

Have Dell Studio17 with Windows 7. 500G sata. 4G MEMORY. Problems with supposed virus infection. Friend said he could reload 7 and solve problem. After install to 3rd partition lost windows recovery. Had driver disk, but I'm not familiar with the right ones to install.
Symptoms: Cannot install downloads. Can download them, but they wont install. Says "corrupted file" or some such.
E-mail wont come in easily. Says receiving 1 of ** and is very very slow. 5 e-mails may take 30-45 minutes.
Recommended to try DriverZone. Shows 10 drivers missing but cant download them. Nothing shows up.
I'm at a loss. I have just enough computer knowledge to be dangerous, and I need help.
Thanks JohnCorrupted downloads... Sounds like a RAM issue. Can you boot with only one stick of RAM installed-alternate sticks of RAM until the file download issue is resolved.I will try that. Give me a day to get back on here and I will let you know if it helps find my problem.
Thanks for the quick reply.
JohnWell we gave it a try. Took each individual stick of memory, tried it temporarily in each slot, and no change. Obviosly the laptop ran just a bit slower, but I would probably be the only one who could detect it.
I do know that Dell puts in a recovery program to re-do the entire system (F8 repair),but with this re-install of 7, it seems to be gone. If I could get to that, you would think I could solve all problems. But not there.
Could it be a bad install of drivers? The driver disk is here, but I don't want to stumble my way through it and I may make it worse. A common mistake one might make when reinstalling an OS is ACCIDENTALLY wiping the recovery partition. I have done this before.

Try installing the drivers first. The drivers are meant to help your motherboard communicate PROPERLY with the hardware present. If that doesn't work, I'm thinking it may be the hard drive.Ouch. Hope it's not the Hard drive. It's only a year old. I have heard about problems with the manufacturer. Really was hoping they weren't true.
Is there an order to installing driver's?
I know I have tried to download a couple drivers off of the disk, but when downloading even an 8MB driver, I click on open, and it says 2 hours to download. I was hoping that was normal, but I've been told it shouldn't take that long.
I'll give it a chance and try to download it one more time. I will let you know.
Again, thanks for the patience with this "Newbie".
JohnHere is the list according to Dell.

http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kcs/document?c=us&cs=19&docid=268873&l=en&s=dhs

Why not just go to the Dell website and enter in your Service Tag and get the proper drivers for your system?

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~ck=anavmlWell, after reinstall, driver search, and all sorts of help from this site, I have found my problem and solution. It WAS NOT my computer at all. I contacted my service provider, (wireless broadband), and asked them to check their modem, and external antenna.
Their external antenna is bad! They will be here in the morn to change it.
I don't know if I feel embarrassed, happy, or what. But I do know, this is a great site.
So I wish to thank all of you who got on here and tried to help. I know I will be coming here next time I have a problem.
Thanks again to all.
JohnQuote from: Bjohn on October 04, 2011, 07:41:45 PM

Stay away from products like DriverZone that supposedly fix everything by updating your drivers.
There is no point in paying for drivers that are free anyway. You can download your drivers from Dell.

I am glad to hear that you got it sorted, and don't feel embarassed.

okay i am not good when it comes to computers, i merely check emails, and play games.  when i am on my laptop comp alone i have no PROBLEMS at all.  my wife can sneak home and just log onto yahoo or facebook and i would know she is home some where.  we both have laptops, mine is a HP dv7 with windows 7, AMD phenom(tm) II N620 dual-core PROC 2.80 GHz, 4.00 GB hard drive installed, 64-bit OpSy. 4 MB ram, idk about video/sound cards (not sure how to check lol), i am using Kaspersky virus protection, and yes this is a real version of windows. if u need more info just ask i will try to find it out.

i will have to get the info on hers once she comes home with it, all i know is its an ASUS

so my question is.... why is it that when my wifes laptop comp SIGNS into anything i get LONG loading screens for yahoo/facebook/basically anything. we are on the same wifi connection. now when i play our game, we were both logged into the same game/server and we were shoulder to shoulder on our couch. we were both in the same LOCATION and were doing the same thing, but, as i watched her running around me, i was doing what others have called "rubberband lag" thats where i move forward but the game doesnt log me moving and i jump back to where i was standing.

please feel free to ask for more info as needed about anything im not clear on, my wife even knows im not the best at offering info without questions.
So I am going to try to make this more clear. Well, I do not see any problems when I use anything that is not connected to the internet use, like word pad or searching files or playing movies from a DVD. Basically once I log onto my internet browser and jump on, for starters, Yahoo/Facebook my upload speed to my screen is slow, if upload is the right term?. When I check my latency in my game settings once I get fully in,it looks its fine, for what I know, but when I try to run forward I start to move then it pauses and I skip back to my original spot again. I play a MMO thats similar to World Of Warcraft, DDO.com. I notice the problems there the most, and when I try to bring up my Yahoo browser, its like from 1 second to about 5+ when my wife is on her comp. I had a friend who is slightly computer savvy said it might be a software problem. If that HELPS?

Hopefully this info will help get closer to my problem.....Might be worthwhile to see what is running on HER laptop. If she's running P2P downloads (like Bittorrents) this can often hog the internet connection.

There are some viruses that can cause similar symptoms as well, but it's hard to say without knowing more.Check your connection speed by visiting www.speedtest.net. Is it about what you should be getting?

New Trial Audio Editors. Good?

Many use Audacity, it is very good and it is free. Last month CNET added some new try-or-buy newcomers you might want to look over. Maybe you will find one you like better. I am not sure. Why change?

Here are the new ITEMS. All are highly rated.

WavePad Sound Editor
RECORD and edit mp3, music, and other sound files, add effects, noise reduction, VST.
Added on September 30, 2011
Version 5.02

MixPad Audio Mixer
Record and MIX audio clips.
Added on September 21, 2011
Version 3.00

RecordPad Sound Recorder
Record sounds in WAV, AIFF or MP3 format.
Added on September 21, 2011

Audio Record Wizard
Record sound, music, or any other audio from your computer into MP3/OGG files.
Added on September 10, 2011
Version 5.4

Here is the link for more info and the downloads
http://download.cnet.com/windows/audio-production-and-recording-software/?tag=rb_content;main

Of course, there are really hundreds of sound editors out there. CNET has a big collection of the free ones. On the same link look on the left sidebar for lots more.

Here is my problem. I really don't know if is WORTH while to try any of this stuff. There are some little things I don't like about Audacity. But it is so time-consuming to try the new stuff. Let me know if you have had any experience with these or other free or low-cost Audio Editors.
Any comments relative to the THREAD are appreciated.
