Solve : HELP WITH MY KEYS?

Answer»

I wanted to show my penpal my nephew, so I videochatted with her, and then he banged on the keyboard. I dunno what he hit, but he must've hit SOMETHING important because now when I press the letter keys, they come up as symbols or numbers.
I am on my other laptop currently, but I don't have much time to be on it, since it's my sisters.
It's an Acer BRAND laptop, and I think he hit the Function key, but I'm not sure.
If I am right, what do I do to get it back to normal?
If you can help, I appreciate it. Try turning off NumLock.I don't have that button..
it's an ACER mini laptop.
What operating system? XP? Vista?

If either, perform a System Restore to a point before he started BANGING on the keys...Acer Aspire One?

EVERY Laptop (at least every modern laptop) has a NumLock key.

It's usually a Function Combination.
For example, on my HP Mini, it's FN + Scroll Lock.Thank you guys.
I fixed my laptop.
I found the numlock key.
I thank you all for your help!Anytime

Solve : MS Outlook 2002 Extra text lines in message review pane?

Answer»

OS is Win XP Home Edition. I am receiving emails from one sender that is not appearing in the preview pane like other senders. When receiving a message the from and subject format is standard. However, this is followed by a number of sentences; i.e. text from the message itself.

All other sender's MESSAGES only show sender and subject. This particular sender's messages were showing up as standard up until two or three weeks ago. I am certain it is a setting in their email program that is causing this but don't know what it is therefore cannot recommend any changes to them in regards to their settings.

Is there some setting in MY Outlook OPTIONS that would cause one individuals emails to appear in the preview pane to be different than others? I wouldn't think so, but with computer programs one never knows.

Thanks,
RogCan you offer an example of what you see? Here is an example:

[emailprotected] The UnoSat 3/7/2009 6:44PM 11 KB

Subject: The Uno
Subject: New concept motorcycle ride
A young inventor has created a MOTORBIKE with a twist..... QUOTE from: Rog3236 on March 07, 2009, 09:14:30 AM

A young inventor has created a motorbike with a twist.....

Do these sentences continue with URL links in the messages? - Looks like a spam email... something like:

"A young inventor has created motorbike with a twist grip that feels great*censored* text continues on....."

Do you know the sender? - CONTACT them and ask them to run a spyware/spam scan on their machine.

Solve : RE: outlook not sending all pages?

Answer»

my office is sneidng me attachments and I only recieve the 1st page.
I believe the problem is my OUTLOOK setup but I dont know where.
Pls help!!
CFirst page of the email or the attachment?USUALLY the emails have 2 pages but I only get page 1 AND I had the office change to another PC and re-send it - same thing.
Note - the attachment is usually 1 file - size about 60 to 200kbIn Outlook there is a tick box that prevents attachments from being opened or saved due to strict security policies.

If you check in the settings, (I think) in Tools > Settings > Security and remove the tick blocking attachments. Take care when opening emails with attachments now THOUGH at my end I have no problem receiving attachments- the problem is that the original report has 2 pages to it - when I receive it, it only has P. 1.
Going THRU the set up at home I see nothing that would affect the attachments and there doesn't seem to be a problem with anything else sent me by anyone else.
As for the sending PC, I took a very quick look at it's Outlook settings and didn't see any restrcitions on sending attachemtns- this one's weird.....

Solve : Tv sound does not appear on my TV?

Answer»

I am hooked up to my TV to my apple MBP MC721LL/A {CEPC}. I can get the computer to SHOW up on my TV, but cannot get any sound other then just on my computer. I am a beginner.
Unless you tell how you connect to the TV and what with, then every answer will be guesswork!you need a thunderbolt , mini-display port (MDP) to HDMI adapter such as this one which is recommended by many Mac users http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10428&cs_id=1042802&p_id=5969&seq=1&format=2dont overly complicant the matter. Look where you connected the VGA cable the cable that serves video to the TV. Look an see if there isnt a 1/8 audio jack on the back BASICALLY, what connector you laptop uses for head phones or if its a RCA which would be the audio on something like a gaming console. The red an white, the yellow indicates the video portion. As soon as that is DETERMINED you can go to like radio shack an see if they dont have something. You will probably end up with an adapter an cable that you need to run from the laptop to the TV.Did you use a VGA cable, HDMI cable, or what, I can't answer your question until I know.Quote from: JoetheHawkinsman on January 07, 2012, 06:08:54 PM

Did you use a VGA cable, HDMI cable, or what, I can't answer your question until I know.

didnt think of it was HDMI. Ether way if its not hdmi check what I had POSTED above. If its not check if your sound isnt muted, hdmi carries both auido an videoThe laptop Diana describes is a mac and uses a thunderbolt connector to pass the video output to an external SOURCE. There is an adapter available that will convert thunderbolt to hdmi...a one cable solution rather than using one connector for video and then the 1/8" jack for audio.

Solve : How to make Windows Live Messenger work??

Answer»

I just installed the latest Windows Live messenger on my computer. I had been using windows messenger that was already installed for a few hours beforehand. When i try to sign into Windows Live messenger, it says that the "Windows Live Communications Platform has encountered a PROBLEM, etc etc." I've uninstalled and reinstalled windows live. Is there a way to fix this?FIRST of all make sure your .net framework is up to date; second temporarily disable all antivirus, internet security programs, firewalls etc. and SEE if you can sign in.Hi fornoonex3,

Have you tried signing in with another ACCOUNT? Get a friend to try signing in using their username and password. If this works, then there might be something on the server side (Microsoft) of things.

If things persist, check out the Live Messenger team page: messengersays.spaces.live.com/default.aspx?sa=527238479. You can get in touch with the right people through there.

Solve : How to open a file on a PC from an unformatted flash drive??

Answer»

I bought a USB flash drive about a month ago from Best Buy and gave it to a friend so that he could put a VIDEO onto it for me. He took the video from a DVD and put it onto my drive using a Mac. None of us realized that the person that needed to have the video owns a PC. When she plugs in the flash drive she gets a message that the drive is not formatted. Obviously formatting the drive will erase the video. How can she open the video on her PC if the drive is not formatted for a PC?You could try this:

It has a 5-Day free trial.
NOTE: I have no experience of the product, so caveat emptor

Solve : Prevention of pc formats?

Answer»

Hello I'm not sure whether this is the correct forum. I am managing a computer room which is used mainly by kids. We have some windows and some ubuntu workstations. I have added account protection on windows so kids cannot INSTALL inappropriate computer games and that worked for a while. Unfortunately they figured out a way to overpass it. They just formated a pc and installed theire GAME. I am in thoughts of what to do. I know that I COULD password protect the bios but that would mean that I need to be there everytime they use the computers and this is not possible. So I am looking for a solution (if there is one) that requires a password only when someone boots and tries to format the computer.
If you have any ideas please let me know.Set a password in the BIOS for accessing the BIOS (usually supervisor password) and then configure it to only boot from the hard drive.Actually with the proper Windows security settings they should not be able to install anything...much less do a system format.
I think we're not getting the full story.QUOTE from: patio on December 26, 2011, 03:38:45 PM

No windows security setting prevents you from BOOTING using a CD or floppy and formatting the drive from there.Don't bother with prevention; just Ghost each computer and restore when needed.

does that kind of defeat the purpose? I thought the point in prevention was to make sure the machines were used for their intended purpose, rather than repurposed to play video games.Quote from: BC_Programmer on December 26, 2011, 05:31:45 PM

OK. Good point. Another suggestion then: (1) remove or disable optical and floppy drives, and USB ports. (2) Whale the tar* out of any kids who disobey the "No Formatting" rule.

*Or withdraw computer privileges from them.

Thanks a lot,

I will first try this :

as it seems to be easy and enough for my case. Otherwise I will have to take different measures.I may be missing something here but how long are these kids left in this room unsupervised that they have enough time to reformat the computers, and get everything else installed just so they can play their games. Where do they get all the software from when they reformat the PC.

Maybe you just need to have some one there all the time to ensure the PC's are used as they should be.

Solve : Outlook 2003 & 2007?

Answer»

I'm using a HP Pavilion duel core PROCESSOR that came with Vista Premium last year. I recently upgraded to Windows 7. So far I haven't had any issues until now with "Outlook."

I was originally RUNNING Office Professional 2007 with Outlook. about two days ago, I started having trouble with outlook 2007. The application wouldn't open up and there seems to be an error message about the .pst files being corrupt or missing a .dll file. I THINK a virus corrupted it, while I was switching to a new anti-virus.

So I totally uninstalled the software and reinstalled office 2007. Outlook still didn't work. All the other applications work fine.

Today I decided to totally uninstall office 2007 again and then down grade back to office 2003 just to see what would happen. Everything WORKS EXCEPT Outlook 2003. Now I have installed the updates and the compatibility application as well. Yes I still cannot open Outlook. Plus I'm getting a new error message. I'm attaching a .jpeg file to show you what the error message is. I decided to ask you guys here before I give Microsoft 39 dollars for support. I really hate speaking to people with an accent that I can't understand. Any help would great be appreciated. I really need to use this software as my organization depends on it.

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]1) Try DETECT & REPAIR from the Outlook Help Menu

Solve : I have a graphic that has saved as 'File'.?

Answer»

Hi, I have been working on a (detailed invitation) graphic in Photoshop, and thought I had saved it as normal. I went to open it and it is listed as a 'File' and won't open. I'm a bit sad to lose some hours of work, and have probably lost it, but I thought I would ask if I can get it back. You could try renaming the file extension to what you assumed you saved it as. You could also try DRAGGING the file into a Photoshop window to manually open it.OK, I tried both and Photoshop says it's not the RIGHT kind of document. Looking a bit deeper, I have discovered that it is actually a 'BACK file', which is supposed to be a 'Document or record file that contains non-current items'. Looks like it might stay that way! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BAK_File
A .bak file is a Backup file used by Photoshop, FOXPRO, Sony Vegas...
Have you SEARCHED in the "Recent Files" section of Photoshop?
You could try to look AROUND in your Temp files:

Solve : photo shop font cropping?

Answer»

How do i remove a shadow on a premade Photoshop FONT. I want to eliminate the shadow of Rosewood STD font, so that the font stays exactly the same but is flat and not shadowed or "blocked". ThanksAre we talking about a TrueType (system) font here?

If so and the font has a shadow built in to the glyphs, you cannot remove it - not without editing the glyphs themselves and that's not an easy job. Font design is pretty complicated and you NEED specialist software to edit.

How about looking for another version of the font or a similar TYPEFACE that doesn't contain the shadow?PS I've just had a look at the font and it is as I describe above. A few PLACES to look for alternatives:

thanks guys ya i tried but the background is built into and linked as a layer of font FIGURED it is to complicated i really appreciate your input though ill look into finding a similar flat font.Have a look here http://www.abstractfonts.com/search/rosewood+std+regular+free

Solve : Reverting back to Microsoft Office 2003 from 2007?

Answer»

My wife downloaded and installed a 25 use version of Office 2007 today. She had been using the 2003 version which came preinstalled on her computer. Once the 2007 version installed; all her documents in Publisher 2003 became part of the Publisher 2007. She now wants to revert to the 2003 version. She believes that the 2003 version is on the discs that came with her computer. However the concern is that if she uninstalls the 2007 she will lose all her documents. If she were to do a restore to yesterday would the program revert to 2003 with all the documents intact as they were before the today install of 2007?truenorthIs it possible to do a backup of the documents before doing the system restore?
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/What-is-System-Restore

Quote

System Restore uses a feature called System Protection to regularly create and save restore points on your computer. These restore points contain information about registry settings and other system information that Windows uses. You can also create restore points manually.
System Restore is not intended for backing up personal files, so it cannot help you recover a personal FILE that has been deleted or damaged. You should regularly back up your personal files and important data using a backup program.
All the documents should remain, but I would really follow Microsoft's advice...The user in this thread have your same case http://www.techtalkz.com/microsoft-office/327565-revert-office-2003-2007-a.html
An Add-on tool available here http://www.addintools.com/index.html

Classic Menu for Office 2007 v6.80
  • Brings back the familiar menus and toolbars of Office 2003 (XP and 2010) to Microsoft Office 2007.
  • Supports all languages that are supported by Microsoft Office 2007.
  • Easy to deploy the software to all the computers in your organization or enterprise.
  • Not only includes Classic Menu for Word, Excel and PowerPoint, also includes Classic Menu for Access and Outlook 2007.
If by chance you decide to keep Microsoft Office 2007.Transfusion and Jason2074, Thanks GUYS. We have confirmed that ALL her documents created in publisher 2003 (as none had yet been created in 2007) are in fact within her "my documents". Therefore it does make sense that even if 2007 were uninstalled all the documents would remain and if 2003 were to be installed the documents would return to being associated with 2003. Just to fill you in on how this issue arose here is what happened. We purchased a legitimate copy of Office 2007 with the proper "key".Without paying full attention to the "license agreement" (does anyone actually read those things completely ) we accepted it on my computer. Which was the 1st mistake as i never use that program. I have Open Office on mine. Then we proceeded to install it on my wife's computer. That was when it advised us that it was only usable for a maximum of 25 times. We now know if she had chosen the "customize " option instead of the "upgrade" her 2003 would have been available to retain as well if so selected. Because "upgrade" was chosen it removed 2003 and associated all her documents with the 2007. Panic set in. She has tons of Publisher created documents and feared losing them either at the end of the trial or when she uninstalled 2007 and reinstalled 2003. So now that all is well she is going to use the 2007 until it runs out so she can appraise the differences in the 2.thanks again, truenorth My best advice I can give you is if the CD came with the computer. Save all word files in: 97-2003 document (.doc). All publisher files to: publisher 200 files. All excel files to: 97- 2003 work book (.xls) All power point files 97-2003 ptt. Doing this I have found even if you have Office 2010. I am able to open every thing in 2003, 2007, and 2010. The () show if you have file extractions turned on what it would show. Make sure you are not SAVING in template format. That does not always work so well. Also, when you install 2003, you have to uninstall 2007. The versions types are incompatible and will not able to both be on the computer.

Hope this helps, let me know if it does,

Assuming the two computers involved here are both desktop systems, the license agreement for most versions of MS Office only ALLOWS installation on one computer. But, by uninstalling it from your computer, that would make full installation on your wife's computer legitimate. However, in this situation, a call to Microsoft might be necessary to explain the situation and get Office working on a permanent basis on your wife's computer.
Thanks soybean hadn't thought of that as an option. May resort to that as a possible solution and yes they are both desktops. truenorthThat would be a good idea to call them you have most likley the trail copy on your computer its CHEAPER if you keep it installed and buy a product key from themYour wife should have back up first before doing the installation. Solve : Problems with Sony Vaio connecting to Wifi?

Answer» FIRST I want to apologize if I have put this in the WRONG forum.

For the past 3 months or so, whenever my Sony Vaio restarts itself to install updates, I have problems logging onto wifi. I will try to log on, it will take forever, then I get a message saying, "The Connection was unsucessful" and "This computer currently has limited connectivity to 'JoeBob' ". So far, the only way I have found to solve this problem is by using system restore, which has worked until today. What I need to know is, A) how can i PERMANENTLY fix this problem, or B) Can I fix this problem at all, and if so, is it going to cost me an insane AMOUNT of money?

You could try disabling or enabling the wireless adapter. The problem on some laptops with connecting to home network or other networks you are allowed is intermittent. It happens to me sometimes. I manage wireless network by deleting unnecessary profile. There are also VAIO updates that would LIKELY resolve certain issues such as updates/patches on certain manufacturing ONBOARD components. I too am using a Sony Vaio (desktop) that often has the same bad habit. Generally i can overcome the issue by right clicking on the "wireless connection" icon (near the time) and select repair. More than 80% of the time that solves the issue. However just yesterday when using that computer and having the "limited or no connection" warning doing the repair did not work. My particular wireless adapter is a Trendnet model connected to a rear USB port with an about 4 inch usb cable. I tried replacing just the cable -no change. Because i have a few of that same wireless adapter i put in a different one and all returned to normal. Time will tell if i must do the repair with the "new" adapter. I use this adapter on quite a few desktops and only have this issue with the Sony. So if misery loves company you have some. You could try a different usb port. By the way is this a desktop or a laptop? If it is a desktop use the rear usb ports rather than the front ones. truenorth

Solve : how to deal with zipped downloads?

Answer»

Hello everyone ,

this is one of the oldest problems I keep running into for ages:

When I download a zipped file from the internet to my computer as I've just been doing (a book called "How to become a Unix guru", get the irony?) I FIND all theses zillions of objects in the folder that I created for this download.

What do I do wrong?

Is this an eBook ? ?
What format are these zillion files in ? ?
yes, its an e-book.
The objects, 140 of them, are all in html format. Not to worry then...no, it's nothing to worry about really, but this problem has been sort of following me around for quite some time whether I used windows or Ubuntu.

And it seems a very awkward way to read a book.Blame the Authors...each file is a page of text.Quote from: sandra on December 28, 2011, 11:43:26 AM

no, it's nothing to worry about really, but this problem has been sort of following me around for quite some time whether I used windows or Ubuntu.

And it seems a very awkward way to read a book.

Extract it to it's own folder, and open the first page. no doubt each page links to the previous and next one.

Heck if you're crazy, you might even do something totally insane like use the table of contents for it's intended purpose, since chances are each of the chapter and section headings will link to the appropriate pages.@ BC:

When I do as you suggest (open index and hit a chapter) I'm getting a "file not found" error.

It is no big deal. I can read them books on the web site, no need to download them in the first place.
It's just that I'd like to know if I'm doing anything wrong...

What file is it trying to open? What does it say in the address bar?

We thrive on details. This is what the browser line says when I get the error:

file:///home/micha/.cache/.fr-Ip8vAW/node19.html

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]looks like you are accessing the files inside the zip using the built in shell of your OS; that is, windows, and many other systems, will pretend that a zip file is a folder, and allow you to open files within that 'folder'. But what really HAPPENS is when you open a file, it extracts it to a temporary location and opens that file. Of course in this case, it only extracts the contents file, and not any of the files that links to.

You need to extract the zip to it's own folder. Thanks, and I mean it. However, this explanation leaves me exactly where I started .Quote from: sandra on December 29, 2011, 05:49:21 AM
Thanks, and I mean it. However, this explanation leaves me exactly where I started .

Are you or are you not actually CREATING and extracting the zip to a new folder? The PATH shown is a temporary folder...I right-click the desktop and create a new folder (1).
Then, I download (right-click, save as) the ebook into that folder.

When I open that folder I find a packet thing with a ".zip" ending. I right-click it and hit "extract here" and a new folder (2) is created within the folder that I created at the start (1). When I open folder (2) I find all these objects.

Just as an aside:

I think whats playing into this here is Basic Dummyhood on my part, i. e. a LACK of feeling for folders...

Solve : System Restore Replacement App, RollBack Rx HDD Error?

Answer»

Hey peeps,
I need some help with getting my hdd BACK online. I UNINSTALLED my system restore replacement app, called Rollback Rx, it was updating data and got to 99% finished and SECTOR validation error came up.
The app installed a sub-system that runs before WINDOWS starts when I boot up my pc. Now when I boot, RBRx runs, but only attempting to update data and stops at 99%. Usually I can hit the HOME key when it first starts and access the sub-system, but now all that's left is the attempt to update data.

I'm wondering if there's an app that may correct this error and allow me to recover a functioning Windows install.

Appreciate any help,

Solve : Video Aspect Ratios?

Answer»

I have a very strange question. A GOOD FRIEND of mine, who is very heavy, has finally decided to get some help. I would like to take some video of her and change the ratio so she appears tall and skinny, to give her something to shoot for.

I have seen videos where you know the ratio is wrong, but I don't know how to do that. I usually use Windows Movie Maker, but I do have Sony Vegas. I'm just not that familiar with it. It's a bit over my head. But if this is possible to do, I'll play with the PROGRAM until I figure it out.

Thanks! You can create the movie in anything you like and then transcode it using a program that will let you change the ASPECT ratio. Handbrake, for example, can do this.Thanks. I think I figured it out in Vegas Pro. I did get it to SHRINK. It created those black lines, but it's better than nothing. This is just so out of my knowledge circle.

Merry Christmas!

Solve : Photoshop File Info Dialog box?

Answer»

How can I change the FONT in my Photoshop File Info dialog box? It is showing Curlz which is extremely HARD to read. It wasn't always like this, so I don't know what I did to change it, but really want to change it back to something like HELVETICA. ThanksIt's probably nothing to do with Photoshop, specifically. More likely it's caused by a (Windows) theme. What O/S and version are you using?the Info dialog is actually a hosted Shockwave Flash "movie". Knowing that it is really Flash Player, we can google the issue for flash player, and we discover that many people have had this issue (That is, font corruption) and that a common fix is to update the video drivers, or disable the hardware ACCELERATION for Flash Player. While you are at it, make sure you have Tahoma or Segoe UI installed. (on Windows).Good call.

Solve : Using 74,52 unallocated GB to fix XP file system.?

Answer»

In a thread I began 5 DAYS ago here, I explained that while I was trying to recover from an unclean shutdown of my WXP SP3 that was on a 74,53 GB partition C: of my WD 160 GB HDD, my desktop suffered electrical troubles that made it unusable.

I have been told that when I overcome the electrical troubles the first thing I must do is to "boot Windows and fix the file system". I have also been recommended to use certain tools that can start from a CD or a USB device.

But because until the file system that's on partition C is not fixed I won't have an OS that will allow me to download these tools to CD or USB devices I have thought of something that I would like to consult here because I don't know if it is feasible:

  • Can I use the same Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition CD I used to install the OS on C to access to the 74,52 GB that are not assigned in my WD 160 GB HDD, create a partition there and proceed to a clean and complete install of Windows XP SP3 there (in this new partition)?
  • Once this new partition and clean install are there, can I use them to boot into Windows from them?
  • Once I have booted from them, can I download the necessary tools to the CD and/or USB devices and from there solve the file system problems that are on the first partition?

Can you please answer these questions for me?

PS: Before asking these questions I have searched here and in other PLACES but haven't found answers that apply.
What was the nature of this:"my desktop suffered electrical troubles that made it unusable." truenorthThank you for your INTEREST egghead.
I can only tell you what I was told by the technician to whom I took the cabinet with motherboard, processor, power supply, fans, diskette & DVD drive.
Is that enough or do you need more details? A lot more details. Was it a power surge, was it lightning, did the power supply short out, etc.?There was no electrical surge, lightning nor power supply short out.
The only thing that perhaps I can add to what I said here is the transcript of the notes I made while I was following the instructions of the blue screen and afterwards of the Microsoft Window Error Report
Do you think that can help? In that case I'll try to find them.Sounds like somebody is trying to string you along. Computers don't EXHIBIT those types of symptoms from an "electrical failure". It can be caused by a faulty power supply but that is a relatively easy fix and is PSU failure, not "electrical failure" which sounds more general.

You also, in that thread, don't cover what exactly "unusable" entails, or what happens when you try to boot to windows. This was the primary reason I didn't bother responding in that thread, actually- the description of the problem was very vague and you seemed more focussed on what IMO is a non-solution to that problem.

Also performing a chkdsk /r doesn't require a fully working Windows System. If you have the windows disc you can boot into the recovery console and run chkdsk /r on the drive from there, and with any luck you should be able to boot the system after running it.

To answer your question, yes, you should be able to create another partition from within windows setup and install windows to it. But since your goal is pretty much to run a disk check on the drive, you may as use the recovery console.Thank you for your reply BC_Programmer, and SPECIALLY for the last paragraph

I purposely tried to avoid using "electrical failure" in my previous posts and used "electrical troubles" because there was no electrical surge, lightning nor power supply short (at least not at the wall outlet level).

This is how things occurred:

After trying unsuccessfully to follow the Blue Screen indications the computer began to boot into Windows and I was able to access my account but a Microsoft Windows Error Report appeared. While I was trying to follow its suggestions, XP's updates download progress bar froze on the monitor . The same happened with the mouse cursor and there was no response to the keyboard input.
Each time I rebooted the computer, the same thing happened.
At a certain point I also heard a sort of muffled snap sound so I opened the cabinet, looked inside and smelled but everything seemed right.
Because the monitor was still frozen I rebooted the computer.
This time I wasn't able to boot into Windows so I decided to access the HDD through a Linux Live CD I have.
So I started the computer with the Live CD on the CD-DVD drive.
The screen showed the Linux files were being copied to RAM but at a certain point it stopped and the cursor remained flashing indefinitely on the screen.
I tried to reboot the computer but there was no response.
I tried to shut it down and there was no response so I unplugged it from the wall outlet.
After 15 minutes I plugged it back and restarted the computer. It was there where I discovered the fans worked, but the blue light on the "on" button of the cabinet didn't work and there was no screen response.
It was here where I decided to consult the technician.

Solve : accessing Outlook Express mail from the Vista environment?

Answer»

Hi, all. My mother's email account on her main computer is accessed through Outlook Express in Windows XP. UNFORTUNATELY, her computer is out of service for a short while, but she does have access to another computer for the time being. Problem is that the other cojmputer is running Vista, and doesn't have Outlook Express loaded. She tried to set up access through Windows Live, but doesn't have the password or popmail information handy; our question is, is there a WAY to DOWNLOAD Outlook Express for Vista, or another way for her to access her account in that environment?

Thank you for your time. No, using Outlook Express on Vista is not recommended. I am not sure if it is possible.Quote

Well, there you have it from the mouth of the cow.

Here is a vbery good alternative:
http://www.mozilla.org/en-GB/thunderbird/
Thunderbird works well on Windows PCs. It is different from Outlook Express, but not too much. Easy to use, IMHO.

But you may not have to use a pop3 client to get your e-mail in a pinch. Many ISP companies give you web mail also.

As to your settings, you can get help from you service provider. For example, if you provider is AT&T you call the 800 number can ask for e-mail help. If you use the e-mail they provide. They can provide you a new password and tell you how to get the e-mail using the browser until you get Thunderbird to work.

Same thing for Com cast and the other major providers. Most of them have a web mail site were you can get you mail without the email pop3 client set up.

BTW:Hindsight.
Good idea to keep all passwords in a safe place other than your computer.
Also, you may wish to set you pop3 settings to NOT remove items from the server. That way you can get your old mail in case you PC does a really bad crash.

Just to be sure mizhepzibah understands this, it means accessing her mail by web browser.

By the way, mizhepzibah, Windows Vista systems have an email client which is very similar to Outlook Express. It's Windows Mail. If you want to set up her email account in it, you'll need some info (incoming and outgoing servers, port #s, and logon settings) from the email account provider for this. However after saving them in paint, when I reload then into paint to continue working on them, they've gone rather pixally, rather than having the solid colour fills I'd put on top of the image. Solve : Photoshop Software?

Answer»

I am looking to get a new computer and my main software will be Photoshop Elements 10. I have the "listed requirements" but I was wondering if anyone has experience with the program and could tell me what specs I really need to have in my new computer. I have Vista HOME SP2 with 2Gb mem and 500Gb hard drive and my Photoshop Elements 9 runs slow. I have a friend that just got a new computer with 6Gb mem and 1 tb hard drive and it still runs slow on hers also. Can anyone give me some advice?First of all, I don't use Photoshop.
If version 9 runs slow, don't expect version 10 to be much better.
Programs like Photoshop can, it some cases, use a lot of computer resources. Most of the burden is on the CPU. Adding more RAM and a bigger hard drive make little improvement.
You will want at least a dual-core CPU with a clock speed of 3 GHz. Having 6 GB of RAM does not do much help the 32 bit version of Photoshop. Only the first 3.5 GB can be used.
As for Hard drive. there is little performance difference between a 500 GB drive or a 1000 GB.
You may need to consider the Video performance of your new computer. A wimpy video graphics device makes things appear slow when the screen is refreshed.
BTW, an advantage of buying from a local vender is he might let you install your program on a display model so you can test the relative performance.
For what it is worth, here are new reviews from CNET.
Best performance desktops
If I didn't have a mortgage, and if they tripled my SOCIAL Security, I might buy the Apple iMac 27-inch 3.1GHz
I'm thinking if Vista came standard on your computer, you at least have a dual core processor or something more modern. I would suggest at least 3GB or RAM and a decent video card. You don't need a gaming card, but something aside from onboard graphics would be recommended. Try the GT240 or something in that price range. Not only would you be adding additional video processing, you'd also be taking stress of of your current machine. You don't need a clock speed of over 3.0Ghz, but it would help. I have a triple-core processor clocked at 2.1GHz, and that works fine. Also not a user of classic Photoshop. Unless you are designing the cover for a rock album or are doing the graphics for a coffee table book, why run Photoshop? You can spend as much on books describing the latest tips and tricks as you do on the software. Elements 10 is at least affordable but has the same drawbacks as the biggie. They are both pigs in terms of resources.

Computer graphics have advanced. The fact is, you cannot make the features of photoshop "lighter". Sure, a lot of the window chrome and fancy stuff surrounding the application UI is "heavier" but it's also easier to use. Additionally, I use Photoshop CS5 myself for the creation of wallpapers and I've yet to purchase a single book on the subject. In fact, I'm surprised there is even a market for books on Photoshop at all. At first it was difficult to use, but 90% of usability is experience, and I hadn't used any version of Photoshop yet (instead using Paint Shop Pro for many of the same reasons you LIKELY use Picture Window.)

There are typically two arguments against photoshop- one is that it's a "resource hog" which is a non-argument since image processing is resource heavy and- at least in my experience- Photoshop typically lags behind firefox, Visual Studio 2008, and even Winamp for memory usage on my machine, unless I happen to have a number of my 2880x1800 images open. The second is that a lot of it's "appeal" is more or less driven by inertia, which is something I used to believe myself until I used the product for a short while. I figured that the reason so many people think Photoshop is the "go to" professional image processing application was based on their earlier domination of their competition with features and that at that much of their appeal lies in their verbalizing of the word "Photoshop" (expressions like "looks shopped") However, while I often went wanting for features in Paint Shop Pro 5, PSP 9, or Corel Paint Shop Photo Pro X3, I've yet to find myself wanting of a feature in CS5. It's UI was overwhelming somewhat, but if you ask me that's a limitation of the common UI design paradigms like menus and toolbars at representing the vast functionality of a product like photoshop. Also, Photoshop's functionality is more or less a superset of Picture Window's, so naturally it is going to use more resources. The people that use Picture Window don't need the other features, so they don't miss them.

As to the performance issues raised by the original Poster, I've run CS5 (which to my understanding is the "full product"while Elements is the somewhat stripped version for more general consumption at a cheaper price point) on both my Quad [emailprotected] with 8GB and my older Dual [emailprotected] laptop with 4GB of RAM and had no appreciable performance issues to speak of. It's important to note, that regardless of your system, filters and large images will take time. I work with 2880x1800 images and often use full-image filters and depending on the settings they can take a full minute or longer to process. Some might call it slow- I call it inevitable. And since people were sometimes able to get up, brew a pot of coffee, and drink a cup of it before a filter completed with earlier HARDWARE and software I still consider it an improvement.

Picture Window is a different product from Photoshop altogether and requires a different mindset altogether; it doesn't have layers, because they aren't conducive to the prime purpose of Picture Window, Which is for working with digital photographs, while Photoshop is for dealing with the more general domain of Digital imagery and Digital Graphics. Trying to use Picture Window for many of the tasks that one might use for Photoshop is a fools errand; With photoshop, changing your mind about a drop shadow a few days down the line just means toggling the drop shadow option in Layer blending options. changing your mind on a drop shadow in Picture Window often means restarting the image from scratch, or loading up a saved backup image. The workflow is different, and from what I've gathered Picture Window's workflow seems to center around a "digital darkroom" metaphor, consistent with it's primary design goal and purpose of dealing with digital photographs; Photoshop is less focussed and tends to provide a lot of functionality with regard to the entire domain, which is useful if that is what you need. For a lot of the tasks revolving around manipulation of Digital Photographs themselves, the implementations are often more advanced in Picture Window than they are in Photoshop, things like the Histogram functionality and it's perfect blending with the curves functions. This of course comes with a trade-off. Picture Window is designed as a niche product, designed exclusively to specialize in a given task that happens to be a subset of what another popular product is capable of. Thankfully, it is this specialization that allows the tools used within that smaller domain to be more advanced as well as allow it to be less "heavy" overall, since it doesn't need as many extra things to load. The trade-off is that if you need functionality outside the realm of Digital Photography, you'll be pulling your hair out trying to find or invent workarounds, simply because what you want to achieve isn't part of the products workflow.

Solve : Unclean shutdown?

Answer»

Hi!!

While I was trying to recover from a blue screen that appeared while I was working as usual with my WXP SP3 & Excel 2007 Home & Student's SPREADSHEET, my system (Intel P4, MSI 945GCM7, 1GB RAM, MSI Video Card nVidia, Samsung DVD drive, floppy disk drive) suffered electrical failures that left it unusable.

'Cause I urgently needed data that was kept in it's WD1600AAJS SATA HDD, I connected it to a very old desktop (Cyrix III M II 3x, 125 MB RAM, Sony CD CDU5215 SCSI disk, floppy disk drive unit) that I use exclusively with a live CD Linux distribution. It hasn't a HDD nor SATA but has a USB card so I used a Manhattan Hi-Speed USB 2.0 SATA/IDE Adapter.
After booting into the Linux distro I mounted the HDD and a 1,44 MB diskette to the Linux system. My intention was to keep the data I wanted to rescue in the 1,44 MB diskette, but while I was getting ready to proceed, a red little window appeared in which I could read:

Quote

The NTFS-3g driver was able to the NTFS partition but returned this error message:
$Log File indicates unclean shutdown (0,0). Warning: Foreced mount, reset $Log File
It is mounted read/write, but advice is only write to it in emergency situation. Recommendation is boot Windows and fix the filesystem first!!!
Okay

Though after this advice I took care in not WRITING on the HDD, I'm not entirely sure that the maneuvers used to "unhide" some columns or some other maneuvers I could have performed will not be misunderstood by the OSs as writing .
I'm aware that each time I closed a file and was asked if I wanted to save changes I replied I didn't want to save them.

I think that the electrical problems I mentioned before are related with the efforts the system made to recover from the blue screen so I would like to leave the HDD in the best possible conditions to be connected to a SATA system and to be used by XP Home Edition SP3 avoiding these these efforts.

While I'm waiting to know if the P4 desktop can be repaired I've used CH's "Search" and "FAQ Database" tools to see if there's something I can do with this old computer and the WD HDD to achieve my goal. Unfortunately what I've read doesn't seem to apply to my case.

Can I please have your opinion?

Thank you for your time.

PS:
  • Though I have unplugged and plugged the WD HDD to the old computer in several instances, the red advice only appeared the first time.

  • My internal 160 GB SATA WD HDD has 74.53 GB on a basic NTFS healthy (System) partition with Windows XP Home SP3, all my programs and all my documents on it and 74.52 GB are unallocated.
Using a very old computer to read a damaged drive is not a good idea.
Reading a SATA drive or even a PATA drive with a typical USB adapter is not always reliable.

A better choice is a newer PC and make the damaged drive the second drive in the system.

The best way to recover data is with then original HARDWARE system. If that is possible. You can make a bookable XP like OS that will boot off of a USB.

Some like bistros can read NTFS. But as you found, writing is not a good idea.
Living decades in non English speaking countries has it's inconveniences for those of us who know little about computer science and information technology.
Though my first language was English I have LIVED most of my life in non English speaking countries.
And there are times when I can't figure out if I'm facing typos, or if I don't understand technical words or if I'm missunderstanding plain English words.
In this case, though I'm extremely grateful for your answer ,you have written

and there are three points that are preventing me from fully understanding it.

Could you please tell me if
  • then is a typo for the ?
  • bookable is a typo for bootable?
If not, does it mean it is an XP like OS prepared in advance for instances like this one and that will boot off of a USB?
  • bistros is a typo for distros?
If not, what are they and where can I read about them? My google search has been unsuccessful.

Thank you for your answers and for your time Sorry about the typos.
(Because of something that happened about ten years ago, I can no LONGER read phonetically. I sight read. So I don 't see the mistakes of my fingers. I would use the speech recognition, but they have the TV on.)

There is an Operating system that can start from a USB flash drive.
It can read and write in the Windows NTFS.
Linux distributions do not reliably write to a NTFS.

Here is a helpful kink about diagnostic tools that can start fro a CD or a USB device.

This person has apparently gotten Paint Shop Pro v8 to repair a few corrupted JPGs...

WHAT DID WORK.

6: Paint Shop Pro (my version is v8). I opened PSP (not Photoshop)... selected the Browse option, navigated to the sub-directory that had the "recovered files".

7: I double-clicked on the image - AND IT OPENED.

8: I immediately saved the image back onto itself. (You might consider saving it somewhere else... the file I was over-writing was already a copy of the original).

9: Returning to Windows Explorer - I could now open the image with Picture and Fax Viewer.

OF COURSE... THERE ARE ALWAYS ISSUES.

10: Eventhough the image was recovered (THANK GOD AND THANK YOU PAINT SHOP PRO)... I noticed (at the bottom of every re-saved image) a grey line / bar (spanning the width of the image) about 10 pixels tall. But (for me) that was acceptible.

Hope this helps.
It's possible that the file has been given the wrong extension. Some people for example rename "image.gif" to "image.jpg" thinking that this is all that's necessary, to convert a file.

Fortunately, it may be possible to determine what kind of an image this is. If you open the image in notepad or some other text editor, the correct designation of the file can be seen.

GIFs tend to begin like this: "GIF89"
JPEGs will look something like this: "ÿØÿà JFIF"
PNGs start like this: "‰PNG"
