Solve : Want to dump Earthlink, how can I import addresses to Outlook??

Answer»

Hello,
It's been a nightmare to use Earthlink these last couple of years with several email CRASHES including loss of contacts, inexperienced tech help, hrs on phone, with multiple hang-ups when calling overseas, etc. Have reloaded at least 3 times in last 5 months, and now can only access my mail thru webmail.
I want to move over to MS Outlook, but I am told by Earthlink the contacts/address book cannot be imported to Outlook, and I must individually enter each contact's info individually, as the file languages a differ with these 2 programs. I find this hard to believe - there must be some way to get my address book exported into Outlook. Any suggestions or input please?
I have MS XP Pro vers 2002 spk2 Pent 4CPU 2Ghz 1.99GHx/1 GB RAM MS; OFFICE Suite 2007
Thank you in advance for your help!

Gee, they speak so highly of you.

Web Mail can export your list of contacts to a "comma separated value" file that can be read by many other applications, such as Microsoft Excel. To export your address book, click the Export Address Book link in your Web Mail Preferences.
Source: Earthlink

After you create the csv file from Earthlink, use the file==>import and export wizard in Outlook to create your new address book.

Good luck. Want to dump Earthlink, how can I import addresses to Outlook?

So, Earthlink is your ISP? And, you're just changing the way you handle email, not changing ISP?

I was an Earthlink user for several years, until about Oct. 2007, when I was forced to switch due to a new telecommunications provider taking over our area. But, I found Earthlink to be quite good. So, I'm surprised to hear of your experience with them.

Now, I never installed their TotalAccess software, no need for it. And, I ALWAYS used Outlook Express with Earthlink. But, sometimes I would also access WebMail and found that convenient sometimes. Using an email client on your computer to get Earthlink mail as POP mail does not prevent you from also accessing your mail via WebMail.

Sidewinder gave you the info you need re: contacts.
Thanks for your replies. I will try your suggestions - have 1 more Q tho --
Being new at exporting - can you tell me, will I be able to retain address book in earthlink while also MOVING it over to outlook?
Would like to keep using my earthlink webmail til outlook all set up.

Sorry didnt include all relevant info before...I use AT&T as my ISP - just kept the earthlink address and Mailbox for $3.49/month.
Total Access program won't work with this set up.
Thanks again. When you Export your Earthlink contacts etc. to a .csv file as instructed above they remain intact in your ELink account...Quote from: moveiton on April 15, 2008, 12:18:09 PM

So, you never installed it? Then, what were talking about here?:

You were reloading what? Since you could still access your mail via WebMail, I think your problem is with your computer, not Earthlink.

Dear Soybean,
Yes I had Total Access for several yrs, then switched to AT&T ISP and TA WORKED for some time and then it crashed. So I called for tech support and all I could get reinstalled was Mailbox, which was fine. But that has been CORRUPTED more than once too even after HD was wiped and it was reinstalled. It's a long convoluted story and dont want to go into all the details.

Thanks for your help, I think now I've got the info that will help me make the shift to Outlook.
