Solve : PDF conversion. double to single column?

Answer»

For some of use, reading a two-column PDF on a table is torture.
My vision is very low. Using a computer screen and the visual aids available, I can get by. But going to a conference or public meeting is a problem. The only thing one can take into some PLACES is a small tablet

Twice a week I go to a local congregation and use either my tablet of oversize print outs to follow along with the lessons. The means I have to do some manhal editing ahead of time to have a document I can easily read.

Some materiel is in PDF format on a web site. If it is just on or two pages, I edit it by hand. But a lot of the MATERIAL is in book form and we do about 16 pages a week. So I depend of getting the PDF in an oversize format. But it is not ALWAYS available. But a standard two column format is available.

Here is my question. What program or service will convert dual column PDF to a single column and also increase the font size?

Trying to increase font size in a dual column document results in a mess. Single column behaves the way you expect.
Articles I have found make it seem very hard to automate.

Any ideas are welcome.

Is there a way that the owner of the PDF can send you a specially sized version or a word document instead of the PDF in which you can select all and simply increase the font of the document?

Years ago one of my clients had poor vision and used the magnifying glass in Windows, but this can be a pain because you have to move it around as your reading etc.THANKS, I will check with the owner of the document. Maybe they have an alternative format that will work better.
Hi! I agree with you that reading a double paged PDF is a torture. I would recommend converting it into another format like DOC or DOCX. I convert the PDFs whichever are in double layout to word documents with Universal Document Converter. I downloaded the software from http://www.print-driver.com . Please check it out. it will definitely help.Wondershare PDFElement is software that manipulates a pdf every which way from Sunday, it's the one I use.

Is there not a zoom function in the pdf viewer on every device?
You are able to manipulate the font size of a pdf, but zooming is easier.
I too have fading eyesight!

I hope it helps
BlairBlair, Thanks for the reply.
Yes, the zoom feature relay does help. My vision is classed at 400/20 for reading. Which means I have to magnify up to 20 times what is normal. At that high levle zoom, navigation becomes difficult.

The document is also available in Word format. I have yet to fully explore what I can not in Word. The RTF file is in single column, which is much easier to navigate. Presently I am trying to locate a copy of MS word in my archives. Using a similar program does not work right, some things are specific to word.

Meanwhile, I can read the PDF, but it is hard to navigate around with a two-locum layout at a high zoom setting.

Maybe I will find my DVI adapter and go back to using two monitors. That is OK for my desktop, but for my android device tat is not an option. Sometimes I NEED to leave the house and take my reading materiel with me.

I will update this if I find a better solution.

I need extensions on my arms to be able to see my tablet

Solve : Can't unistall program?

Answer»

So i have this prog for my mouse (razer deathadder chrome). And the prog is razer synapse 2.0 .So here is the problem.
I used to have to run on windows startup, and today it didn't run.So i tried to run it as administrator but nothing happened. And i thought ill just restart the computer.
Tried it again and the problem was the same so i figured i unistall the prog and re-install it.I had some problems unistalling it cause it was saying that it was open in another program.I tried to terminate through task manager but razer synapse wouldnt show.Anyway for some REASON after 2-3 tries although the unistaller didn't show up the razer synapse dissappeared from the list.So i thought it was ok.Afterwards i saw that there was still a file in program files called "Razer" which included all the files that supposed to be already unistalled.I tried to just delete the file but it was saying that it was open in another program again.I deleted every fight 1 by 1 just to see which files are still open. These are the files that i can't delete.Above all else i run windows in safe mode and still couldn't delete the files.Lastly when i try to install the program from the ground up again just in case it might fix everything i get this. All that program does is help me adjust my razer products. And i just WANT to change my mouse DPI.I would do it with windows but i wont SPECIFIC number which they dont provide. They only LET me get it slower or faster. Please help..i have been on this the whole day.

Hi, I included my specs above. I was just wondering if ANYONE could HELP, or point me somewhere where help may be gained.

When I try to play games, at random points the COMPUTER freezes. I can't even move the mouse, use the keyboard, or Ctrl-Alt-Delete to desktop. Nothing can help besides a reset. I built this computer with gaming in mind, so the fact that it isn't working for the sole purpose it was built is rather frustrating. I only play older games on it though, EX. (Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Skyrim, ect...) They don't have any perfomance issues at all, and the temperature for the GPU and CPU average 75C and 67C respectively. Any help is much appreciated.

P.S. I don't know if it matters, but when playing Minecraft the HDMI moniter shut off for about thirty seconds before RETURNING with Error Code: 3 from the GPU.

Solve : Best program for ripping music from a DVD??

Answer»

I have a DVD with music that I would like to rip to a CD for playing in my CAR. Three possible free programs have been suggested through internet research and I would like to know if anyone has had experience with any of these programs and which one would be the best one? They are:
Switch Audio File Converter
DVD Audio Ripper
Free DVD MP3 Ripper
                                           Thank you,.................That may be illegal.
There is a legal problem. You want to copy music from one media to another. If you do not have a license to do that, you break the law.

This sounds unfair? Well, instead of buying each song or album you want, you can buy a Steele radio and get endless service for a year.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satellite_radio
Quote

Satellite radio is a radio service broadcast from satellites primarily to CARS, with the signal broadcast nationwide, across a MUCH wider geographical area than terrestrial radio stations.[1][2] It is available by subscription, mostly commercial free, and offers subscribers more stations and a wider variety of programming options than terrestrial radio.[3]
Satellite radio technology was inducted into the Space Foundation Space Technology Hall of Fame in 2002.[4]
It is now available in most of the world
Quote
Satellite radio uses the 2.3 GHz S band in North America for nationwide digital audio broadcasting (DAB).[34] In other parts of the world, satellite radio uses the 1.4 GHz L band allocated for DAB.[19]

Satellite radio subscribers purchase a receiver and pay a monthly subscription fee to listen to programming. They can listen through built-in or portable receivers in automobiles; in the home and office with a portable or tabletop receiver equipped to connect the receiver to a stereo system; or on the Internet.[35]

Ground stations transmit signals to the satellites, which are orbiting over 22,000 miles above the surface of the Earth. The satellites send the signals back down to radio receivers in cars and homes. This signal contains scrambled broadcasts, along with meta data about each specific broadcast. The signals are unscrambled by the radio receiver modules, which display the broadcast information. In urban areas, ground repeaters enable signals to be available even if the satellite signal is blocked. The technology allows for nationwide broadcasting, so that, for instance US listeners can hear the same stations anywhere in the country.[19][36
My point is this: Making copies of music can make you a criminal. But Satellite Radio system gives you all the music you could want for a modest price.

Copying music and other media for personal use falls under Fair use.

The one exception- at least in the United States which is presumably where the OP is- is for copy protection. If the media in question is copy protected, attempting to circumvent or using software to workaround that protection would violate the DMCA.

That does raise the question if usage of the software is itself a violation of the DMCA, or if it is a violation to create or traffic the software. I'm not a lawyer of course so I do not know.

One possible "workaround" would be to record the audio output by a DVD player during playback, as that is not working around any encryption at all.http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-*SPAM URL*.htmYou can make a copy of an original DVD or CD for personal use. The key to avoiding legal issues is that the copy must be for personal use. In other words, you may not distribute copies to other PEOPLE or engage in commercial activity, i.e. sell copies you've burned. Reference: http://www.riaa.com/physicalpiracy.php?content_selector=piracy_online_the_law Scroll down to the section on Copying CDs for the info pertaining to this subject.

Regarding ripping, Windows Explorer can be used to do that. Reference: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/burn-a-cd-or-dvd-in-windows-explorer If want more references, do a search on can cd be burn via windows explorer. In some areas, it's legal for personal uses. I've already covered that point. He's been illustrating points made all over the place.... I have no intentions of selling the CD. I just wanted to be able to play it in my car. I had found those three programs at this website when I Googled the original question as to whether it could be done or not, and I didn't know if anyone on this forum was familiar with any of those and which one would be the easiest to use.

Solve : instant housecall 4.6?

Answer»

I was LOOKING around for something to help out family members and found instant housecall 4.6. It says it is free on Major Geeks, but is it a good program. I know there is a paid version, but is this free version good enough to help with that panicked call from auntie?

Thanks Major Geeks is a very reliable source of software. Their DESCRIPTION of the software seems to indicate it will serve your purposes well.

An alternative is TeamViewer, which also can be used for free for personal use. I've used it and keep it installed in case I get a request from a relative. I have not used Instant Housecall but it sounds LIKE a good program. MajorGeeks is a safe SITE, you can download and use with confidence.

Solve : video converter stretch option?

Answer»

hello everybody,
so i wanna convert the video for my blackberry curve with full screen. i used xmlbar and it has this option "curve full screen" but the problem is it convert the video very large size.
my question is, is there any other converter that can convert the video with full screen (remove black width by stretching it) and still lower size. right now i use couple of converter and they have crop option which didn't work well.
thanks I used Format Factory which is a free tool to size down videos dimensions ETC to play on my portable devices when traveling. You can select a aspect ratio or an X,Y screen size for it to size down to. Sizing down works great, but making videos larger, depending on how much stretching goes on at a certain point you will get pixel stretch making it fuzzy/blurry. Having a original video of larger and sizing down always works BEST, but making larger, pixels get stretched and so quality is lost the larger you go. You might be able to stretch it a small amount without loss with Format Factory. Another tool that might work but is used best for conversions is Virtual Dub. Although I know for a fact that Format Factory has more sizing features because its intended for portable DEVICE videos etc.

I have seen some youtube videos where people record video with their phones and then try to size it to make it bigger vs a video column and it loses lots of quality due to pixel stretch.I suggest you can try some free video converters. Just search "Adoreshare" on Google. OPEN it and you will find "Freeware" page. Good luck to youIn general, the widescreen always adopts 16:9 aspect ratio. You can use this freeware to do it.

Add you video > Settings > Change aspect ratio to 16:9 > Convert
Hope it can resolve your problem.

Solve : Avast Boot Scan and Rkill?

Answer»

Getting familiar with AVAST Free 2015. It prompted me to do a boot scan this morning. It IDENTIFIED one file which I put in the chest. After the fact I read about doing a boot scan as it is brand new to me. Got plenty of warnings about deleting the wrong files which can make your PC unstable and/or unbootable. Also read about using Rkill to enhance the effectiveness of AV and anti-malware scans.

Do you folks believe boot scans are safe and NECESSARY? Is Rkill safe, necessary and effective? Thanks.

Boot scans are safe and sometimes necessary. I have never USED Rkill but I believe it is normally only used as special tool to resolve severe malware issues that cannot be resolved through use of regular malware protections such as MalwareBytes AntiMalware, SUPERAntispyware, ETC. For more about Rill, see http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/308364/rkill-what-it-does-and-what-it-doesnt-a-brief-introduction-to-the-program/

Solve : Kaspersky faster than MSE??

Answer»

I installed a 30 day trial of Kaspersky AV 2015. Not sure if it is my imagination, but my old rig seems like it is loading internet pages (ESPECIALLY Yahoo news articles) much faster than with MS Essentials. Is that possible? The protection app you have installed has zero effect on web speeds or page loads...I believe protection apps can have some affect on web browser performance, although the affect is usually slight enough to be barely noticeable. For example, I have avast Free Antivirus installed on my laptop. The Web Shield FEATURE (if enabled) in avast adds an icon to the top of the browser; if that icon is clicked on, a panel appears saying “this site is safe” and listing several specific points of criteria. Or, if avast detects a site it has determined to be unsafe, it will block the web page from loading and display an alert. Clearly, such monitoring of web browsing activity requires a bit of processing of DATA before a web page is allowed to load and, therefore, could have a slight impact on perceived web page loading speed.

In ADDITION to this, you have the general, or overall, system impact of protection apps running in the background and some differences in speed are a point in comparative reviews of various protection app products. For example, some years back, Norton Antivirus acquired a reputation for being a resource hog. Norton has since resolved that issue. I do run MSE and don't notice affect performance much at all...

Solve : Best AV for low RAM PC?

Answer»

My SIL's old HP has only 512MB of RAM. MS says Essentials requires 1GB RAM. I am wondering if MS Essentials is too demanding for her PC? Would she get faster response with a less demanding AV such as the free version of Avast? Oops. What happened here? Quote from: artbuc on March 13, 2015, 02:17:10 AM

Oops.

Is that computer running Windows XP? If so, you COULD install avast. And, yes, her computer might be less burdened with avast than with MS Essentials. For a reference on system requirements for avast, see http://www.ehow.com/list_5920834_avast-system-requirements.html Quote from: soybean on March 13, 2015, 09:35:49 AM

No, her ex son-in-law installed Win 7 years ago when he should have SIMPLY replaced a failing HARDDRIVE. This morning I installed the free Avast 2015 on my old RIG (also Win7) and it definitely seems to run faster than MSE. Of course I have upgraded to 3GB of RAM and SIL is limited to 512MB. So far I LIKE Avast a lot. I can not judge its effectiveness as an AV, but the download was fast/easy and the user interface is slick.

Solve : Windows Like Xcode?

I need a software something like Xcode that will work on windows. I don't want to use VirtualBox or anything like that because everytime I would want to code, I would have to wait 5 minutes for OS X to start up. I have Visual Studio but I don't think it supports IPHONE apps since its a totally DIFFERENT company and their pretty much enemys but still share details to put in their system. Can anyone HELP me?You can develop iOS Apps using Xamarin for Visual Studio, though it is not free, and has some caveats, since you actually need a Mac on the network to use to compile if you use certain features, as well as for signing (as I understand it)

Solve : Is it illegal to put spy software on my wife's laptop??

Answer»

I know that domestic shame should not be published, however, there is one thing that really bedevils me. I suspect that my wife is having an affair with a coworker but I am not sure about it. She is constantly lying to me about her work and comes home very late at night. One night while she was asleep I got into her laptop (I can't get into her cell phone as she has locked it and I have no password) and I found several pictures of man in her computer. They work in the same office, I know. Weirder still, this guy frequently interacts with my wife. I would like to have some more evidence to clear all my doubt. ( Or the most terrible thing is that it might prove my thought)

The evidence such as her Emails or Facebook chat conversations is very important when I take this case to court because we have YOUNG children and I want child support. That's why I am going to put spy software in her computer. One thing that I must point out is that I gave the laptop to my wife as her birthday gift last year. The software will keep track of everything, like Emails, IM messages, pictures and send them to an online account. My friend told me to use it because it worked for her but I don't know if it's legal and if it would even be usable in court. Has anyone here had experience before like me?Short answer: no, it's not, but no idea about a court situation.

I think this is one of those topics where there are a lot of gray areas and it's something people often have strong opinions about. I mean, we have family friends who SWEAR by using KEYLOGGING software like http://www.refog.com/keylogger/ to monitor their teenage daughter's (13 yr old) online activity, to keep an eye on who she's talking to (making sure she's not talking to strangers I assume) and to make sure she's keeping to websites that are appropriate for her AGE. They don't check on it too frequently, and they've obviously talked to her seriously about things to be careful of online, but I think they feel that the knowledge it's there will encourage her to be sensible and responsible - and it means they don't have to watch over her too obtrusively. So yes, this kind of software has its uses.

Without wanting to wade in and give my opinion on your own situation. I think the best way forward would be to talk about your concerns with your wife. Relationships fail because a lack of communication - so just talk to her.Obviously, this isn't a legal forum. If you want legal advice from people who are real lawyers- well, you'll have to hire one, I suppose. But if you want advice from people who can pretend to be lawyers I'm sure there are forums around.

Now, that said....

This is something you hear about quite a lot. ALmost everybody has smartphones, laptops, computers, etc. And when it comes to situations like this, it becomes adversarial long before anything legal occurs- typically, at the breakdown of any relationship (friends, wives, girlfriends, boyfriends, etc) it turns into a battle. And this is exactly the sort of thing that comes up- and people- like yourself- want to take matters into their own hands by secretly collecting evidence.

The thing is- from a legal standpoint- There can easily be legal consequences associated with accessing that private information and/or conversations, This is probably a result if it being a criminal offence in most sane countries. Privacy laws do not suddenly no longer apply because the person who's privacy you are invading happens to be your spouse! Ironically, doing so can actually have the completely opposite effect that you intend- the evidence could be either thrown out entirely, or your method of acquiring it could be used by "the other side" to prove that you are an "insecure control freak" (Just an example, Of course!). It probably also doesn't help that installing spyware or secretly recording conversations (online or otherwise) is a criminal offence, as I mentioned.Thank you. But how can I figure out the doubts in my mind. Maybe I live with a person who doen't love me or is cheating me worse. I hate being cheated.I like what BC said. The best way to deal with personal conflict is to directly address the issue openly, face-to-face.
In some cases, one must talk to the other party in complete privacy. On other occasions one must have another person be a witness to the conversation. But using hidden cameras., microphones or other 'spy' tools can backfire and destroy reconciliation.
It is alarming how person privacy and security are being undermined. The law seems to now lean toward expertise, power and money, not decency.

Has anyone here had experience before like me?
Well, I think you'd better figure out what the truth is. If she is cheating on you, you must make a decision if you will forgive her or divorce her. If she is not, you can put your doubt in mind and live a happy life. Why not try some technical ways to find the truth? You could hire a private investigator. That tends to cost a good chunk of change for a professional. And it isn't always productive, but it might give you the benefit of knowing at least.

As to the spyware thing.......If you do decide to go that route.....After finding the RESULTS... it may be a good idea to not confront just yet...find out what will hold up in court before anything. You may need uninstall the spyware, and then try to find legitimate means of acquiring evidence that will stand up in court. But first things first.. check with lawyers or reputable sources on the legalities of doing such a thing. As it is said above, it is illegal to put spy software on your spouse's phone unless you get the permission of your spouse. But it seems impossible. I know some famous mobile spy app like ( -----------------------, ... but none of them can't be used to spy on spouse legally.

Link Removed...This is an old topic and could be closed, unless there is something positive and helpful that could be said.
As to gadgets and software, there are lots of things out there. There is no reason to think such devices ever resolve human relationships. As has been mentioned, this is not a legal forum. Nor is it a good place to resolve private issues.

Notwithstanding, a quick Google search found over a dozen sites that claim spying and counter spying is necessary.
The following article was from last month and sounds like a soap opera.

Solve : how to bypass surveys?

Answer»

Google it:
Here is a report of ways to skip THEE surveys.
http://www.wikihow.com/Skip-Surveys
Or maybe this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKNjSxNbFKQ
However, you do not need to download special software. If you are using a good Anti-Virus and AD Blocker, you have protection from overly aggressive survey pop-ups.

Why can't you bypass it/them? Are you saying some websites won't let you view their main content unless you respond to a survey? Surveys are usually optional or voluntary matters. So, can you mention specific examples of what you're referring to?

I'm inclined to disagree. Surveys can be, and are, used for legitimate purposes. They are a TOOL for gathering information. Granted, they are often mis-used. Quote from: soybean on February 22, 2015, 09:17:35 AM
I'm inclined to disagree. Surveys can be, and are, used for legitimate purposes.
The survey's are legitimate. The sites that do this are not. And the content hidden behind a survey that cannot be declined are- I'd go so FAR as to say never- useful.

Survey's can be dealt with on commission, a survey company can provide survey's to another site, and that site either get's paid or get's other sorts of kickbacks based on how many people fill out the survey from their LOCATION. Effectively, they are like ads. The company providing the survey wants information to collate for "market research", and are willing to pay money for that information, so sites are constructed promising to provide downloads to high-demand software, documentation, or information, but "hide" that information behind a survey. The end-goal item is the carrot to coax the person to fill out the survey. Thing is, these sites never have that end-goal item, they just claim to have it to get people to fill out the survey. Once the survey is filled out the site either claims to have issues and to "try again later" or just pretends to try to download the file or even downloads a piece of malware, and typically the user gives up and goes back to google to continue searching for whatever they wanted. Quote

Often rar archives supposedly holding that just-released movie on Bit Torrent or usenet are passworded & come with e.g. a password.txt file that says "got to for the password", then the hopeful person gets a survey, and then usually nothing or malware. It's a gullibility filter.

You can't remove a survey on a website unless you are the developer and have access to the website files on the web server. However, most websites using surveys make responding to the survey an optional step. I won't attempt to delve into the site you mentioned. I went to the link you provided and don't like what I see; I will not go further. On top of that it's a pretty dodgy site...no idea why you would wanna return there anyways.

Solve : How can I automatically forward an e-mail and change sender??

Answer»

I would like to set up an e-mail address that would forward all incomming e-mail and change the sender.

EXAMPLE: Random person sends mail to an ACCOUNT that I set up:
From: [email protected]
To: [email protected]
Subject: Test message
Hi!

This account will then automatically forward it to ANOTHER adress with itself as a sender:
From: [email protected]
To: [email protected]
Subject: Test message
Hi!

I am looking for some kind of service that will let me do this, since I do not have a available server to configure. I tried playing AROUND with forward settings in hotmail, gmail, etc. but I cannot MAKE it change the sender address.
The forum can not help you with something that could be used for crime.
Is the a good resown to hide the source of the message automatically?

Gmail Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab can not do this?If you have your own mail server with an open relay then this would not be a problem. We do this where I work but it is locked down to only communicate with other application servers that use the open relay. Most mail servers have this feature locked down.

Solve : Photoshop CS5 "Float all in windows"?

Answer»

To "Float all in windows" using Photoshop CS5, I go to : Edit > Preferences > and under the wording "Panels & Documents" I uncheck "Open documents as Tabs" and check "Enable Floating Document Window DOCKING".

So far so good. But when I open the first thumbnail of my CHOICE, I find I have to close
the screen (window?) to be able to go again to My PICTURES folder to open the second
thumbnail.

Usually, I then hit "Float all in windows" and the two images POP up one completely covering the other. This is not happening now and I am left with only one image as the second image on which the first one is superimposed will not pop up.

What am I doing wrong?

MANY thanks---and I hope that this time I am putting my question in the right place on the forum.

Solve : Skin retouching with Photoshop CS5?

Answer»

Can ANYONE kindly send me step-by-step instructions how to improve human SKIN on an image using Photoshop CS 5?

For example, how to change the colour of one's underchin which is dark to make it the same colour as the rest of the face?

And how to smooth out the face if there are blemishes on it?

I know that there are Photoshop tutorials online but I have had no SUCCESS using them,
as the accent is not very clear to me who is hard of hearing (even though I wear a hearing aid). Moreover, at my age I need step-by-step directions as an IMPORTANT (to me) adjunct to a video tutorial.

I might as well add that English is not my native language, and although I have no difficulty with the written word, the spoken word ofttimes baffles me.

Many thanks.

Solve : Visual Boy Advance video gets corrupted when recording??

Answer»

Not sure whether I should post here or Computer games sub-forum, but OH well.
Whenever I record with Visual Boy Advance, the AVI file that it produces will be corrupted.
However, it only does this if I record after some amount of time. In my experience, it seems to be after 3 MINUTES of recording. If I record 1 minute videos, everything is fine.
Why is this happening. I am well aware of the possibility to use a third-party recording program (Camtasia, FRAPS, SnagIt) and I have tried it with codecs and without (Full uncompressed video) but I prefer to use the recorder in VBA if POSSIBLE. There's not as much lag or barely at all compared to using a third-party recording program.what program are you using to view the video? windows MEDIA PLAYER is known to not have quite a few common codecs installed. You can use FFDshow or K-LITE, both codec packs (i have used neither, just heard of them) or you can use other video players, such as VLC.I have FFDshow installed.
But it seems to get corrupted regardless.

Solve : Lost file destination line.?

Answer»

More out of curiosity than need. But it has been bugging me.
Operating Windows 7 64 bit.
Until recently have been using Windows Media Player to rip music from CD's to Mp3 format.
Recently, the option to send the completed file to a folder has disappeared from the dialogue box. (Where the "browse" button used to be is now a blank space
My question.
If I download Windows Media Player again and "run" it over the old one, would it repair the missing browse option?
Would it interfere with the playing of CDs?
I have tried entering a command line in the space, but it will not allow this even though there is a blinking cursor there.
I have the alternate option of using Nero but am CURIOUS as to what has happened.
Trying to include attachment of dialogue box. Not familiar with uploading after browsing and entering attachment line.

Just a wild guess but you may need to have a file name before the destination prompt kicks in...
May be that, or possibly the change button. what shows up on those screens?Don''t know if it helps, but prior to this FUNCTION disappearing, the box always came up with the last destination folder used and , visible in the slot. It could be browsed and changed at will by input selection by operator. Just a blank now.
As I stressed, it is merely curiosity driving me, as I like to know why these things happen and haven't got the knowledge to figure it out.
Would the suggestion I made in the first post be possible or permissable? Just downloading and RUNNING Windows Media Player over the one already installed?
Would that fix it or wreck it?
I did try System Restore but got nowhere. Thanks for your interest.Re-installi9ng it won't hurt it...

Solve : youtube downloader?

Answer»

I WENT to download cnet.com to download the youtube downloader and Norton antivirus program told me that it was an unsafe program to download. Does anyone know where I could find a youtube download program that is safe to install?
Thank you. I would like to add that I did try the link to altavista provided by a previous poster and got the following message from Norton: This threat has been removed. No further action is needed. See Here...Thank you for your hyperlink, however, it didn't work, either. At first it downloaded the program and all seemed to be GOING well and then at the end it said that the Installation Failed, and up popped a notice in the lower right CORNER of my screen from Norton saying that it was not a safe program and that it was eliminated. I had tried it twice. The second time I right clicked on the program before I downloaded it and went to the Compatibility Tab which was checked for XP, so I went down the list and check of Windows 7, and then proceeded to the download, which failed for the second time. Any suggestion as to what the problem might be?Save the file instead of launching it...
Then SCAN it with Norton...
If it comes up CLEAN disable Norton til the install is complete...re-boot.Thank you. I did as you suggested and it worked, however, all I had to do was scan the file and did not have to turn off Norton. Possibly manual scanning was enough to make Norton realize it wasn't a threat. You always come through!Good news...glad yer fixed up.

Solve : Win Live Mail?

Answer»

Hi guy's it's been a while but I certainly haven't forgotten where to GO when I have a PC PROBLEM.
Anyway, I was FORCED to purchase a new PC recently and because I'm away from home(where I have two decent PC's) I didn't want to spend big bucks. So here's what I bought;

HP Notebook--- Intel Pentium CPU [email PROTECTED] GHz
4 GB (RAM) 64 -bit Win 8.1

The problem that I'm having is with incoming emails in Win Live Mail(mainly because this is the client that I would prefer to keep). Either the incoming messages go directly to "Deleted" or they stay for a very short time in the "Inbox",or I don't receive them at all. I know this because I have Gmail, Incredimail and Win Live Mail all installed. Some messages go to Win Live Mail, some to Gmail and others to Incredimail or maybe sometimes two of the three?. I would like to be able to discard the messages when I desire from the "Inbox" and only Incredimail allows me to keep the incoming mails in the "Inbox", but I have other concerns with Incredimail.
Not wanting to miss any messages I'm at this time forced to keep all three. I would prefer to use only one but obviously it would have to be reliable. I would like to be able to use Win Live Mail only but at this point I just can't trust it. I have spent some time checking "Message Rules" etc. but can't find a cure. I've ALSO uninstalled Win Live Mail and re-installed it several times but with the same results. I've installed manually and I'm convinced that all my settings are correct. And, I don't appear to have any problems sending emails from any of the three?

I realize that many folks don't think much of Incredimail but I though that this was rather interesting?
I posted for help on my issues from Incredimail and when the tech. responded I received his response in Gmail only.

Any help much appreciated, overthehill

Solve : JRE Installation?

Answer»

This morning I removed Java from my COMPUTER with Revo Uninstaller and rebooted. I checked to see if Java was gone from add/remove programs, and it was. I then attempted to update to Java 8 Update 31 by downloading the exe file to my desktop. I opened it and got this error message, 'A newer build of this version of Java already exists on your system. It is not possible to install an older build.'

I then went to Java.com and clicked on 'Do I have Java', and I GET this message: 'We are unable to verify if Java is currently installed and enabled in your browser. If you have installed Java and there is an error with the verification, there could be a configuration issue (eg. browser, Java control panel, security settings) or the Java plug-in is blocked by the browser.'

I then went to Java.com to use the uninstall tool for removal of older versions of Java and got this message: 'Java is disabled or not installed'.

I went into Firefox Addons and Plugins to see if I needed to 'enable' Java in some way but it wasn't listed. I also turned off my firewall antivirus and adware BLOCKER prior to all the steps I have mentioned previously. I'm not sure where to go from here. Any GUIDANCE is appreciated
(The browser I use is Firefox and up to date fyi.) JenniferUpdate:

I ran an app called SecurityCheck. It states that I have Java 8 31 installed, which isn't supported under Windows XP, which is what I have.
I need Java 7 update 60. I ran an App called Javara to remove it, and rebooted. When I ran SecurityCheck again, it is still showing Java 8??

Solve : Password protection with a history .?

Answer»

Hello again all ,

My company use all Microsoft SOFTWARE from xp to 8.1 and we manufacture hand sanitizer mostly for hospitals and we are governed by the FDA.

I'm looking for a security software package that will require a password for each document when OPENED, currently we are using word, and if any changes are made the original document is archived and the person who logged in to make the changes is also noted.

So If I open bluesoap.doc on Feb 10th and make a change I need to produce a report that indicates MP made the changes on Feb 10th and still have the original copy before the changes were made.

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks,
MP.In MSWORD you can set a password for each document. Open the document, click on tool, options and click on Security. As far as making any changes and keeping the original document, you will need to make a copy of the document with a different name such as bluesoap-2.doc.Dave ,

Thanks much and that's what I do for the documents I work on in Excel but the FDA wants it to be an automatic feature when it comes to the formulars used to make the bulk product. And it needs to log the user who made the changes along with the date and time.

MP.Have a Look...Pat ,

Thanks much !!!

Unfortunately we're on different platforms here and are using 2007 on some lap tops.

I can usually find what I'm looking for this one is not so easy.

Thanks,
MP.I'll KEEP looking...keep us posted...Thank much and if I get one I'll let you know to stop looking.

Solve : How to dissect self-unpacking installers?

Answer»

Self-unpacking installers for Windows are very convenient - they don't require stand-ALONE archive software, and have a simple, STRAIGHTFORWARD flow. However, sometimes it's necessary to look into the executable file to find out exactly what files make up the archive inside it. How can we do it?I have a test machine that I use for situations like this. This system I wipe clean and reinstall from image to reset my work area in it. I use this very frequently when testing new software which may not be 100% trusted and I dont want to take any risk with my highly configured and secure system to do something stupid and introduce a problem.

I have had to do this with installers that were written for say Windows XP when I need the driver(s) that are nested within the self extracting installer and the driver(s) are needed for say Windows 7. I will run it on this test machine to be able to extract it all and select what i want to copy to a thumb drive to manually introduce to the windows 7 system. Such as I had to do this to get the correct Video Driver for a Pentium 4 system testing Windows 7 32-bit on it and the Intel 845GL driver support ends at XP and Intels drivers are self extracting installers and they complain under Windows 7 that its the wrong version of Windows and they fail to extract.

If its a program with a self extracting installer, you may or may not be able to just copy the program and its contents to another location and run the EXE, as for MANY installers of software access the system and install the software and so you might copy over the contents and find that the program wont run because it hasnt been installed to the system. It all depends on if it had registry keys associated with it etc.

The nice thing is that sometimes there are downloads available that are zip files that are stand alone or non MSI files in which you can avoid junk that was added to the installer that is unwanted. You could use 7-Zip to open the archive, look inside and extract any files you want - it won't work with absolutely everything but I use it a lot and I WOULD say 95% or more driver packages can be extracted that way. As Dave says, very handy to extract individual files if the package won't install on a certain OS, or if the package includes a lot of unnecessary software. No point installing a "driver package" of maybe a few hundred MB when a few hundred KB of driver files is all that's needed for the device to work, if you don't need the additional sofwtare Most archive utilities can open a self-extracting ZIP executable.

Some self-extracting programs are actually STUB setup programs which contain a .msi Windows Installer. For those, you can use a Microsoft tool called "Orca". This isn't super user-friendly because really it is a .MSI debugging tool, but you can use it to see what files are within an installer and inspect the various actions the installer actually takes before running it. The tool itself is part of the Platform SDK, however a download is made available Here.

Solve : VBScript Functions?

Answer» Vb Script was made by Microsoft to make windows scripting easier. It still is a good choice to help with some things that a re hard to do is just batch alone.
Here is a page teat gives the basic functions in VBScipt.
http://www.w3schools.com/VBscript/vbscript_ref_functions.asp#string
If you check out the string functions you will find a nice library of clever things yhou can do with strings.
http://www.w3schools.com/VBscript/vbscript_ref_functions.asp#string
Upper and lower case, left string, right string and even reverse string and others. If batch is giving you a HEADACHE. just have the batch filed prepare a skhort VBS file and invoke the Vb script t from inside your batch. have it return the valoues to the batch file.
Andy body have a piratical example?
Wheel are circular in shape and help vehicles, shopping carts, skates, etc, progress along horizontal surfaces! But they aren't donuts! Oh no sir!!!! Anybody got any piratical examples? Also: in other news fr0m 1999, Boris Yeltsin resigns, Internet Explorer version 5 released and so is the initial release of Napster...

Having re-read the above post, which I wrote after several glasses of wine, I SEE it as unkind and unhelpful. Furthermore, I actually agree very much with what it says. I apologise and offer below what will (hopefully) mitigate the sin.

Visual Basic Script is a very useful language. It is a useful and logical next STEP for scripters after batch language ("DOS") on Windows 32/64 bit. Just about anything you want to do in batch you can do more easily and in clearer code in VBscript. Also you can do lots of network and system stuff, and manipulate Microsoft Office apps as well.

You can do things which are impossible or cumbersome in batch, e.g. non-integer arithmetic and/or numbers bigger than plus or minus 2,147,483,647. Also just one example at random, date and time stuff is easy to code.

A couple of example date functions are Now() and Day(). The Now function takes no arguments, and returns the CURRENT date and time as a string, e.g. for me right now Now returns this string: "07/02/2015 09:34:25" (date and time as in local system format settings). The Day function takes a valid date string or value and returns the day of the month of that date as a number from 1 to 31. You can nest them so Day(Now) returns 7 because today is February 7th, and there are other date functions such as Month(), MonthName, Year(), Weekday(), WeekdayName().

Examples:

Month(Now) returns 2 because February is the 2nd month of the year.
MonthName(Month(Now)) returns "February".
WeekDayName(Day(Now)) returns "Saturday"

These are just a few of the functions in VBSscript.

Later I will show some ways of the using them from batch, although I really feel that if you want to do this, why not go the whole way and swithc languages. Sometimes we have to modify an existing batch script.

One very useful function to use with batch scripts is the VBScript Eval() function, which I shall mention...
Quote from: Salmon Trout on February 07, 2015, 02:35:02 AM
Furthermore, I actually agree very much with what it says.

I meant, I agree very much with what Geek-9PM says in his original post about Visual Basic Script.

Thanks, glad you got it.
Fro many it is easier to build a bridge from batch to VB Script or some other tool. The may be because there is a lot of documentation and tutorials on VB Script and other scripts. And batch can be convoluted.
This VBS advantage has been covered well in Stack Overflow:

Created an extensive batch script program to handle some automated file management and printing and I need to call a vbs file for its sendkeys operation. Is there a way to accomplish this without freezing the program?
I've tried START /WAIT my.vbs and the script freezes when it enters the .vbs
Anyone have other methods or switches you would recommend?
Again, he got some help. Using the right incantation, one can pass parameters from batch to a vbs and the vbs can return values in a file.

For script languages that can not get parameters on the command line, one can always use redirection to send and receive values. I did this once with the old MS QBASIC interpreter. That version of QBASIC did not know how to read the COMMAND string and I had to put values into a temporary file. Got it to work!

Like to remind all that you can CALL one batch from another. The allows one to 'hide' some details of how something convoluted is done. The convention I use is to prefix child files with the underscore char.
Like this:
BIGJOB.BAT
_BIG1.BAT
_BIG2.BAT
OTHER.BAT
_OTH1.BAT
_OTH2.BAT

In the above, the underscores identify files those called from the parent files.

Solve : Cannot get past "Error InstalShield Scripting Runtime" When reinstalling game?

Answer»

Last winter I reformatted my HD and re-installed Windows 7 (64 bit). At that time I lost my Flight simulator game that I enjoyed a lot. Lately I tried to re-install my Flight Simulator game but I get the message "ERROR InstallShield Runtime". Is there a quick fix to this? What is the exact game you are installing to check on its compatibility?

Is this an INSTALLATION from Disc or a download off the internet?Hi DaveLembke. Thank you for the come back. The exact name is: "Microsoft Flight Simulator" "Deluxe edition". It is on two DVD's.

It is one of the software packages that was awarded to me by Microdot for participating in a development program that they had going. (Which was preempted by "MY Space"). It was not compatible with Windows Vista but was compatible with Windows 7 which is the OS that I am now using. Microsoft has some fix methods here... have you tried this YET?

HTTP://support.microsoft.com/kb/910816GURU: Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. Sorry I am so long in responding. I have a few health issues. Today I went to that Microsoft site and was able to fix the problem.. Maybe I can remember to try something that the next time that i have a problem. Doubtful, my memory is going south on me. Anyway, once again you guys have solved my problems. Good Job. Happy New year. JIMI have the same issue, can anyone help me? I'm having trouble with Acronis 11.0. I always back up my C drive and my data drive using their disk cloning procedure two other hds. I have never had any PROBLEM in years of doing this.

Yesterday I got over rambunctious using Revo Uninstaller and needed to recover some lost programs. So I installed the cloned C disk that I made two weeks ago.

The system booted and I was back where I wanted to be.

Since I was happy with where I was, I wanted to clone this C drive to the one I had been using. This is where Acronis gave me an error for the first time since I've been using it. I have done things like this before without problem. Both drives are of the same size, although different makes.

Here is the error: Acronis failed to move your data because your new hard drive does not have enough free space to complete the operation. The reasons follow:

1. Some of your partitions contain errors. We recommend you reboot your OS and correct these errors, e.g. using chkdsk
2. Your new disk is much smaller than your old one.

Well nr. 2 is eliminated since their sizes are the same. Regarding nr. 1, I performed a chkdsk /f on the destination disk. Same result. I then formatted the destination disk to be sure it was OK. Same result. There were no bad sectors in the chkdsk report.

I ran chkdsk on the C drive and found that there were corrupt attribute records. I am nervous about running it with /f because I don't have a backup.

Is this corruption the problem? Can I safely run chkdsk /f without having to worry about losing the disk?

BTW I'm using Windows XP and NTFS file system.

Thank you.You can safely run checkdsk with no options. It will identify but not correct problems. The problems may be trivial and it so you can ignore them.
The two discs are not the same size. One, the source, is a tad larger.
A good practice is to have your drives divided into two or more partitions. That way have a way to avoid the size problem. A partition program can reduce the size of the partition a wee bit, enough to let Acronis do its job.

I also ran into the size issue with 2 drives I thought were exact. One was a WD 40GB and the other a Seagate 40GB drive. When looking at the drive properties they were very slightly mismatched in size and my master drive that I wanted to pass to the slave was just a few MB larger.

Fortunately it was also an XP system and I still had Ghost 2003 and Ghost 2003 allows you to clone drives of various sizes at ease.

With Acronis on my Windows 7 system that does not like Ghost 2003, I ended up resizing my C: drive before making my master image for C to the SPARE hard drive and the problems you are facing went away. I was able to take a 500GB master drive that only had like 78GB used on it and clone it to a spare 250GB HDD. Then swap out the drives and boot off of the 250GB drive. The capacity that I shrunk my partition to was 119GB so I could use a 120GB or larger drive if I ever had to. Did this in case I was to clone to a 120GB SSD in the future etc to not have to yet again resize smaller. I could always go and resize back to max capacity if I wanted too as well.So what can I do now? I'm having trouble booting up...the screen stays on the moving blue slider until it just stops. I can get it up using safe mode but that doesn't connect to the internet, which I need for my business.

I tried going back to the restore points. No success there.

Finally I just turned off the power on the stalled screen, rebooted and it finally came up. I'm not going to shut it down until I find a way to clone the C drive.

I'm wondering if those chkdsk problems are the reason for the trouble I'm having booting it up.

So what can I do now? I do have a much bigger drive which is a clone of my data drive. Should I just use that? How can I partition the C drive if it's running? Don't think I can.

Any suggestions on how I can create a clone of the C drive? (because I know I'm going to have these boot problems in the future and it would be helpful to have another drive to boot from)I recommend you first use the checkdsk with no options and see what it might do.

The post by DaveLembke outlines the method you need to use. Make the C drive smaller. You can get a version of a partition program that can do a modest resize with the system is running. It does that by putting the partition program into the start-up stuff. It is automatic. EASUS has a free version that works good.
This is what I use:
http://www.easeus.com/
But here is an alternative.
MiniTool Partition Wizard Free
Shrink it just a bit and then you can copy it.
Thank you for posting both of those resizing applications. It seems to be just what I need.

I have downloaded and examined both, but they require a reboot to take effect because "Drive C is being used".

I am afraid to reboot for fear that the system won't come back. It took me over half an hour to get it running this afternoon.

But I guess there's nothing for it...I'll do it in a day or two after I get some stuff done that I can't afford to ignore.

Thanks again - P.S. I used chkdsk on the C drive earlier - that's where I got the attribute errors. If you get into a bind to where Windows will not boot, your other option is to perform a Repair Installation of Windows XP which will fix for problems and not WIPE out your important data and programs installed etc. Just be careful that your actually performing a repair installation and not a clean install or else it can wipe out your PERSONAL data and programs installed etc. If there is a way to backup your data prior to this, that would be best. Hopefully you already have a data protection method already in place such as to copy data to a cloud drive or external drive frequently to avoid a total data loss. On my one Windows XP system I have it as part of startup copying the local data to the NAS, and this way if I forget to manually run the batch file to xcopy source to destination /s/d/y, the next time I boot the system up or logon it will compare and update the data on my NAS.UPDATE: I decided to go for it and reduced the partition on the destination drive. The system wouldn't do a warm boot - just like before. But did a cold boot when I cut power.

So now it seems that I'm OK once again - at least I hope so. My destination drive has been going NUTS since the reboot. I have no idea what it's doing. Plus when I do a DIR of my C and destination drive (E) I get a different result. IOW, there are more files and unknown stuff on the E drive. I thought they should be identical. Meanwhile the E drive hasn't stopped chirping since the reboot.

I should replace the C with the E and see if it boots.

I have just one last question:

How can I determine the actual size of a hard drive so I can now make my destination drive the same size as the source? I'd like them to be interchangeable.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! All of you. You saved me. Quote

How can I determine the actual size of a hard drive so I can now make my destination drive the same size as the source?

Drive Properties under Windows will tell you as well as other hard drive utilities and most partition resize tools will show a maximum capacity in which you can set the partition size to any value lesser than or equal to the maximum allowed capacity.

With Windows XP this is pretty easy, but if you are working with like Windows 7 for example you will find extra hidden partitions such as the System Reserved 100MB and also possibly a Recovery Partition of say 15GB, so then when you look at your 320GB HDD and wonder why so much is missing from the maximum size of C: you then find its because of these hidden partitions. But with XP you should be all set. Its pretty straight forward unless your going with Dual Boot etc.

so I can actually read it and see how it looks, hi by the way You misspelled it in your Topic...Why not use something like this: http://codebeautify.org/xml-to-csv-converter

That will CONVERT the XML files into CSV which you can then either read as raw text or open in a spreadsheet APPLICATION such as Excel or LibreOffice Calc.

Solve : Need a good Software Builder..?

Answer»

I need a good software like Pika Software that it is simple to use and no coding at all unless to show the code for it. It has to be User-Friendly and simple functions and selection option such as check boxes, radio buttons, etc. It has to be free or have a cracked version... I need some good software. PS: I don't use Pika because it crashes and always freezes. You won't get any pointers towards "cracked" software products on here.
How can you expect something free to not crash?
Free versions expect the user to help the author find bugs in the product.
I see two problems here:

  • We will not help you pirate software
  • Free "software maker" tools that don't require code are toys rather than anything else, you cannot build anything serious or actually useful with them. I can't honestly think of a situation where one of these tools would serve a purpose. How can you expect to make new and innovative software when all you have to use is predefined bits of code that someone else has written?
How about you actually learn to write code? It's not hard and you would actually then be able to make something genuinely useful. If you must continue to use the pika software if you have an older computer, you may have better luck with its stability. My guess is that the bugs are likely Windows 8 related so a system running XP or 7 would be a suggestion.

I also have to agree with cameron on his statement that you would be confined to the limitations of this wysiwyg, predefined funtions etc. If you learn to write actual code vs use of a wysiwyg, you have pretty much limitless potential in anything you want to create with the only limitation being system resources and hardware processing power to pull it off if complicated etc.

Years ago when I was a webmaster for a few websites, I use to cheat using Dreamweaver; however the problem with this was that the web pages had extra bloat in them and while dreamweaver was ok for a really good looking static website, adding form and other functionality into it really required the personal coding touch with notepad or some other text editor to alter the HTML created by the dreamweaver project.

I feel that you will be stuck in the same situation with this, where your limited to very basic development, and anything more complex/ useful would require actual programming in the code vs wysiwyg only.

These days the only wysiwyg that I use is a Keyboard/Mouse Macro Creator, because I can very quickly in a matter of minutes put together a Rube Goldberg method to automate an in depth process that is redundant and compile it as an exe to be added as a scheduled task or use on a team of systems processing data without having to spend a week programming a custom program method to achieve the same information gathering through C++ or Perl. Additionally my macros created are only for my use and not being marketed to others, so it doesnt matter if its a Rube Goldberg method of achieving a project goal when time is money and time is limited and I am simply just using this tool to make life easier and make better use of my time on other non redundant tasks or unnecessary custom program creations that may only be a 1 time use.Yes, I believe that coding would be better but my friend is a pro coder and he told me, "Coding C# or C++ isn't a thing that you can do overnight. It requires a lot of attention and time." He is right about that but I just don't have the time to learn all of it and master and fluently code. Most of the coders are pros with a lot of time on their hands and out of college. I am only 11 (almost 12) and don't have much time to work with. I will start learning a lot of HTML then C++ or # or something like that. I use an app called Udacity and it works but they don't support C# or ++, do you have any other websites or apps that teach that language? Quote

All the great coders out there started with HELLO WORLD and moved their way on upwards to great masterpieces of mathematic and logical art.

I started programming with Basic on a TRS-80 with only 4k of RAM, and programs had to be made small enough to function and not exceed the memory. I got a memory expantion to 16k and also reached the limit of the memory when I had way too many IF statements with an attempt to make an AI like problem when I was 10 years old.

The fact of the matter is that if you know C++ or many other languages your not stuck with one program not supporting a language as for you make the rules, you make the logic, and so you can make a program that ties 2 programs together etc if you perform a memory hack to address memory used by that application or the application itself has another safer method of ENTRY to gaining access to the data that the application is running.

The best way to learn C++, C#, or another language is to actually get a book on it that comes with lab examples. It will start you at the very basics of HELLO WORLD displayed on screen or printed to printer etc and then work its way onto showing you all the concepts that follow almost all computer languages out there to where eventually you can master one language and then if you wanted to learn another language, you already know what objects or methods are needed to make the computer do what you want it to do, but you just learn such as with me and BASIC to C++ that Code: [Select]PRINT "Hello World"; is the same as Code: [Select]COUT<<"Hello World";. Then it becomes the same as learning a new verbal language such as
(English) 3 = THREE and (German) 3 = DREI

It all takes time and the more you practice the better you will get.

As far as websites to learn programming, there are too many to list. There are even videos on youtube such as from a programmer with page at TheNewBoston http://www.youtube.com/user/thenewboston

Best suggestion though is to get a book that has labs and some even come with a CD or DVD or an ability to download the IDE that is used to programming in the book, so when the book shows how to compile and run a program, you can follow by example. Many of the online sites out there do not show by example for how to compile the program and working with debugger etc.

Then when you are working with the code and have any questions feel free to post your questions and examples of the SOURCE code your having issues with and one of us would be glad to help.

I can assist with C++, C#, Perl, HTML, JS, and Basic.

Lastly.... the reason for a book vs online for learning content is that you will need to read information and then apply it, and its far easier to look and read a book and then have the book by your side and type the code into the system and compile it or run it if its a compiled on the fly scripting language, and with a book you wont have to flip back and forth between the IDE and the website that has the info your learning. *The only benefit to an online site to learn from is that you can copy/paste the source code to your IDE, but you can still use the websites in addition to the book to learn from.Your only 12 and you don't have time? You got the rest of your life ahead of you.

Once you get the basic concepts down for one language it becomes easier to learn other languages.I think it's silly we're entertaining this...

No pre-defined goals...
Hasn't looked into programming at all from whats been stated...
Not motivated for something that takes time...

Just sayin...For general information:
Microsoft has a suite of software tools called "Visual Studio" and it is a very good starting point for anyone on a limited budget.

Or just Google Free Visual Studio Express.

As a student he can get Visual Studio Professional for free.

I don't think so, the availability through the Academic Alliance is for colleges/universities, and maybe high schools, though I'm less certain about that since they validate it with a .edu E-mail address for a participating institution.

That said, though, Express edition has been replaced with the community edition, which is identical to the Professional Edition with restrictions on commercial use by companies.

Visual Studio 2013 Community Edition can be downloaded here.

I'm not sure if Visual Studio is ideal for learning to program, however. as it brings with it a lot of management baggage (projects, Solution, Build Settings, etc.). Small basic Seems like a good way to get into it, as it presents itself through much simpler mechanics, akin to the earlier BASIC versions Dave was referencing.I agree that a simpler language would be best to start with if you have had no programming experience as BC linked to Small Basic.

If you want to dive into C++ and your determined enough, there is a simpler to use IDE than the Microsoft Visual Studio to start off with. I like the Bloodshed Dev C++ 5 and have used it QUITE a lot for programming up quick programs that do not need .NET FRAMEWORK to function and dont need to integrated with other .NET based code. If your programming in pure C++ without implementing .NET Bloodshed Dev C++ 5 is a very good IDE. Also it has very minimal system requirements and is a very small install vs Microsoft Visual Studio which takes up a few Gigs of hard drive space due to all the many libraries and features that the software has.

Here is Bloodshed Dev C++ 5 if you are interested for a very beginner oriented C++ IDE. http://www.bloodshed.net/devcpp.html

It reminds me a lot of MS Visual C++ 6.0 which I used many years ago. I originally learned C++ on Borland C++ 4.0 which ran on my DOS 5 / Windows 3.1 computer in the early 90s. From that I moved on to MS Visual C++ 5.0 in which I had to adjust some syntax differences, but 99% of the way that C++ was under Borland worked under MS Visual C++ 5.0.

The most difficult adjustment for me in my programming background was going from MS Visual C++ 6.0 to Visual Studio .Net 2002 edition and in college they were still using 6.0 and I bought the latest IDE and the college professor couldnt help me with learning how to use it. I got it on a student discount through a website called Gradware which no longer exists and got it for like $99.99 for a $900 full software package. I ended up having to dig up my Borland C++ 4.0 floppies and install that so I could do my homework at home for college and then adjust the small syntax differences in class to compile and present my work. I then got introduced to the Visual Studio Express edition around 2005 which was way better than the 2002 edition of Visual Studio .net and used that for making personal programs with a GUI to it vs just command shell DOS looking programs.

I am going to check out the Visual Studio 2013 Community Edition myself as for I have been using Visual Studio Express 2010 as well as Bloodshed Dev C++ 5, and I should try to follow the times with newer IDE to at least be familiar with it in case I am forced to have to use a newer IDE that supports something that older IDE's dont etc.

Solve : Can't play video files or open images!?

Answer»

I got a new keyboard today. Just plugged in and started my PC. It wanted me to install some driver software stuff and it did automatically. But now i can't play any video files. I normally use VLC. I tried UNINSTALLING several times. Quicktime and Windows player doesn't work either. I can not play my video files at all. FIREFOX also stopped working. It all just crashes when i try to open it. Please help this is so *CENSORED* frustrating!

Also i just found out i can't open images either Also DELTACO TB-613 is the keyboard.
I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

And i've restored the system several times with and without the keyboard. The problem is definitely the keyboard. Works FINE with my old one.Makes zero sense that a keyboard would break certain apps that used to run fine...
I suspect you have other issues.
That being said i'd return the keyboard for a replacement... Quote from: patio on January 07, 2015, 03:45:19 PM

Yeah i don't see the sense in it either. Also when i start the PC up with the new keyboard it says something about "Load MMDriver" crashed or something. I don't know what that means?I solved it! It turns out that for some STRANGE reason ASUS Gamer OSD was interfearing with my keyboard (don't see how that makes sense)... But i uninstalled the Gamer OSD and it all seems to be working!

Solve : Performance Monitor - Windows XP?

Answer»

While working on my friends computer today installing the COMODO AV for him, he saw the Windows 7 Performance Monitor that I use. He asked if he could have that installed on his Windows XP system, and I said that this gadget that I am using on Windows 7 would not work with Windows XP, but maybe there is a similar program out there for XP.

To my surprise there was. I was thinking if I found something it would be no better than the one already a part of Windows XP when launching task manager and then minimizing it in which you get the green CPU usage box in the tray area.

I was surprised that this Performance Monitor always stays on top by default. This is easily changed through a check box under settings. And its good that they added the ability to uncheck this as for my initial placement had it to the far right and it conflicted with the slider bar when mousing over it in which a mouse over causes it to display stats for CPU, Memory, Hard Drive, and Network use depending on which one your pointer is over.

I figured I'd share this here in case anyone else is interested in it. Also if there are any better ones, more features etc feel free to share them. I think this one covers it all although it doesnt show temperatures. If it showed CPU and GPU temp graphs that would make it all that much better to keep an eye on system health.

Of the 4 stats that this displays the most useful to me is the CPU, Memory, and Network graphs. The CPU graph is helpful when knowing that the CPU is running at 100% etc and why? at times if idle or unexpected activity is seen. The Memory graph is useful to know when multitasking if your pushing the system beyond its memory limitations as well as you can keep an eye on memory leaks or abnormalities. The Network monitor is helpful when you dont expect network traffic and all of a sudden there is a upload that is not expected etc.

I have used gadgets on my Windows 7 system to detect problems with CPU, Memory, and Network usage and fix the problems.

Examples would be:

CPU Usage: Detected a dysfunctional program that after it was closed it still had services/threads running that should have also ended. ( * Freeware Bugs/Design Flaws )

Memory Usage: There was a version of Firefox a while back that when LEFT open would slowly eat up more and more RAM. This was after it was left open for hours. When closing Firefox the problem would be fixed. I think it was a bug with some sort of cache that it used that would just continue to grow. It pointed out a Freeware program I was using that was written in Delphi that had a memory leak which pointed out why it would crash. I was able to fix this memory leak crash condition by feeding the program smaller work chunks and then closing and relaunching the program with smaller chunks of automated parsing instructions to carry out from a list.

Network Usage: This has been most helpful in detecting while eyes are already on the monitor that something is either communicating with your system that is unexpected or your system is unexpectedly sending data outbound to some unknown connection. I was then able to quickly launch wireshark and look at the traffic and find that the free game I installed a few days prior made my system a seed in a bit torrent network. I killed off my system acting as a seed since I dont like being a seed. Games like these should have an option in their configuration to enable/disable the seed function of the clients, but if they made it too easily disabled it could cripple the way that their game is updated among their customer base.

http://www.hexagora.com/en_dw_davperf.asp

The download that I selected from their site was the zipped package 300k file which is without the Windows installer. Although I downloaded both versions the stand alone and the one with the Win32 installer and both came up clean on a virus scan from comodo. If using the Win32 installer version just keep a look out for any check boxes etc if it wants to change anything such as home page of browser, search engine, or if it wants to add anything unwanted.

I am actually going to try this out on my Windows 7 system now as for I have been using gadgets when Microsoft stated a ways back that they should be no longer used and the service disabled that allows for them to function. The risk with the gadgets is mainly if you use one that is dirty with Windows 7, it can give an attacker remote access to your system. The gadgets i have been using i have been using for many YEARS and 3 of them are clean. But to be as secure as can be maybe i can disable them if this Performance Monitor does it all without keeping a door open for vulnerability of a system. Also I like that you can set these to always be on top, so when testing software etc I can keep an eye on the systems behavior internally vs having to size a window down to allow for space to look at the graphs on the side on the same display of a single display computer.

First Pic shows how its staying on top even when playing music video on youtube.

Second Pic shows mouse over details which i took multiple screenshots and pieced them together into a single picture for the graph details as for you only get 1 group of details at a time for whichever your moused over.

Third Pic shows the ability to disable the Always on Top feature.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Perfmon (Performance Monitor) has been around since NT 3.1 in some form or another. I just checked a NT4 VM and it's present, though it doesn't show anything when minimized and effectively just charts and/or logs data values.

For temperatures they aren't implemented by default likely because they are motherboard-specific and there is no fully standardized way to determine them. programs like HwMonitor and Speedfan basically poke their fingers all over the address space looking for ways to identify where to read temperature/sensor data.

As it happens, this can cause problems- By way of example, if I run speedfan on this system, I get a BSOD instantly. Needless to say I don't think people would look favourably on a Windows Release that BSOD'd their system at startup!

Though temperatures aren't implemented stock, the Performance Counter feature is extendable. Intel has a program that adds counters for an Intel CPU:

https://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/intel-performance-counter-monitor

From the screenies there are some "thermal" options.
BC Thanks for info on PCM. I wasn't aware that Intel made this. Definitely going to check this out.

Also thanks for info on Speedfan that I was not aware of with the poking all over address space looking for hardware monitors. All this time I thought they were using some sort of generic universal instructions to initialize and access the temp, fan speed, and CPU core info vs basically address scanning a range for a successful hit.

Interesting that Speedfan causes BSOD with your system. The worst I have ever had with it is not detecting any hardware monitors on such as a Pentium 4 Dell System at work in which I wanted to see if the CPU was running hot or not. Suspecting the thermal compound was probably dried up. I ended up having to just go into the bios and look at the hardware monitor there which confirmed that the CPU was idling at 53C which should have been like 30-39C without a load since the room temp was not all that hot. Sure enough when removed the heatsink it was all dry and chalky after 9 years.

The only feature in Speedfan that I ever saw as potentially dangerous was the overclock features that it has. I never played with these and for all my overclocking I do it all in the system BIOS manually vs using a software tool like this. The warning that they give you for this Clock Tab was enough to scare me away from messing with it.

This system by the way is my old system a Athlon 64 x2 4450B normally a 2.3Ghz CPU that I have overclocked 10% in the BIOS Manually by change of the FSB for memory from 200Mhz to 220Mhz x 11.5 multiplier. Decided to show the gadgets that this Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium is using. * I edited the pic to hide the IP info. Normally it shows your IP and your IP lease from ISP that the modem is using etc.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Not entirely related but my ancient K6-2 system which was my main machine when I joined this forum and for a time afterwards had an overheating issue. In particular it occurred while playing games. The Alarm would sound which was basically a repeating set of high-low beeps that sounded like sirens.

The highest temperature I saw after REBOOTING the system and getting access to the BIOS sensors was over 100 degrees centigrade

Later I reworked the system by replacing components. I gave it a new power supply, which fixed a lot of stability problems, and I replaced the heatsink/fan with a aftermarket super socket 7 cooler. This was after I did my furst complete build so I had the thermal paste which is partly why I decided to do it.

The overheating issue was pretty obvious. Rather than thermal paste, it had a thermal pad. And it had turned to dust.

Yah the older AMD's liked to roast when the pads dried up. The pink pad material between heatsink and CPU of my Athlon XP 2800+ dried up back in 2008 and in the middle of gaming world of warcraft with a raid event it went into a melt down condition and shutdown. The only good thing about this is that I wasnt the tank or healer and cause a group wipe, and I had a Pentium 4 2Ghz system that I was able to TURN on and get back into the game, however with much worse performance due to the fact that I only had a PCI GeForce 4 MX440 with 64MB Video RAM compared to the AGP Geforce 6800 GT in the system that melted down, and so graphics settings were set to lowest to get 15-20 fps and was able to get back in in less than 10 minutes. The bad news though was that the CPU was toast. Surprisingly there was no thermal overload protection to shutdown before melt down and so it cooked itself to death. The green waffer had a nice brown blister on it off to the side of the CPU core. And it was also chalky like you described with your K6-2

Solve : How can I?

Answer»

I may have a problem can anyone help, being my first time to the forum kick me if I do something wrong!!!
I have a machineshop and have been given a older CNC milling machine which requires a cam software to run. I have an older seat of Mastercam 9.1 which I was running on Win 2000 Pro.
I wish to buy a NEW computer running Win 8 with an AMD chip set.
QUESTION, can I just create a partition then load Win 2000 pro as a second OS or will it not run on the new computer?
You see I am retired and the $10000 price tag for a new Mastercam 10x seat is out of the question. I also need to find out if I even can load my seat of Mastercam 9.1 and have it see the harps key.
I will do my best to answer any of your questions. Question I have is.... why buy a new computer? Why not just find an older computer that runs good and install Windows 2000 to it and run the software that was intended for that OS and hardware.

I use to assist with a garage and machine shop that had some older systems/machines running on old OS's. The machines dont run any faster on a new computer, they are limited by design to cutting metal at a specific rate for example so you could run a 486 computer or a modern Core i7 which is overkill and the machine if the software can run on a modern computer will not run any faster etc.

My suggestion would be that if you plan on USING the machine for many years to buy up some cheap good working used computers, load them up with the software, and store them someplace dry and dirt and oil free and this way when a system fails you can simply just SWAP it out 1 for 1 and be back up and running. You can probably get good used computers that run Windows 2000 Pro for $100 or less each. HP had a reliable business computer product line called the EVO which came as a small form factor and Pentium 4 processor with Windows 2000 Professional. Up until about 2 years ago I was able to pick these up as refurbished computers for $89.99 with 40GB HDD's and a CD Rom or DVD Rom drive.Thank you for your input, I had thought of that but guess I was thinking I could also have just one computer in my small office. Having a dedicated computer just maybe a better way to go. I have a very good old computer with 2000 loaded and will try to load the software and see if that will still read the hasp key.I suggest using virtualization software such as VMware Player or virtualbox. This would allow you to run Win 2000 as though it were a program running in Win 8.1. For additional explanation of this, see http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/virtual-machine-makeuseof-explains/Virtualization might WORK if its just a serial link to the machinery, but if the computer has a card installed into it that the software works with, you can run into a situation where that card can not be addressed directly from virtual environment.

Solve : Strange problem with an Excel file?

Answer»

Hi,

I am an IT admin for a large BUSINESS network, and I have encountered one computer issue that I simply can not solve.

Here's the problem:
One user has received an email with an attached Excel spreadsheet from a coworker. He regularly receives Excel documents via email from this same coworker, and has never had a problem before. When he clicks to open the FILE, the spreadsheet does not open. Excel opens, but only shows a blank grey background because there is apparently no workbook open. The file can be viewed successfully by previewing it in Outlook and by previewing it in Windows Explorer. Also, the file came from a user who certainly does not have the computer expertise to mess with the file intentionally in this way.

Details:
The file causing the problem is of the type: Microsoft Excel 97-2003 Worksheet (.xls)
The computer having the problem is running 64bit Windows 7 Professional and Excel 2010.

What I tried:
Opening the file on a different computer worked every time. I tried this on a variety of computers including one with the same specs as the problem computer.
The problem computer could open any Excel file except for the one having the problem. This includes 97-2003 .xls files which were sent via email from the same source as the troublesome file. Just to be thorough, I tried other newer Excel files and files from other sources.
I scanned the file for potential threats using our anti-malware software, and it was found to be safe.
I checked for computer code in the file. There are no macros or scripts which have been added to the file.
The problem computer could not open the file from the email or from a local copy of it. The file was re-sent from the original sender, and still could not be opened on the problem computer.

Conclusions:
Since the file will open anywhere except for that one computer, the computer seems to be the problem.
Since the computer will open any other Excel file in Excel 2010 successfully, the file seems to be the problem.
This tells me that the problem lies not with the file or the computer, but somewhere in the relationship between the two. Beyond that, I can not pinpoint the problem.

Any advice or theories would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!If someone else LOGS on and opens that file on the same machine, do they also have the problem? That would at least narrow the computer side of the issue to the machine or the user's settings. Can you try using a FLASH drive to convey that file from the sender to the recipient to test WHETHER the file can then be opened on the recipient's system? If the file will open, this would seem to indicate something about the email transfer is affecting the file.

Solve : Win9x Graphics Program?

Answer»

Does anyone know of graphics programs that will work with Win 95 & 98se?IrfanView...i believe it's still Free as well.Older editions of Paint Shop Pro
Quote

Older editions of Paint Shop Pro

My thoughts were similar, but to search ebay for old software that you can get cheap because the demand is probably pretty low. I scored an old unopened box of Corel Draw 3.0 for $10 with free shipping for EXAMPLE about 10 years ago to use on an old Pentium 133Mhz running Windows 95 on 32MB RAM. While LIMITED in what it could do in comparison to version 12 which was out at the time, it was far better than MSPAINT and I couldnt find anything free at the time that had the FEATURES needed.

Paint Shop Pro Versions 1.0 through 4.12 were distributed as freeware, and can be legally downloaded and used for an unlimited amount of time without making a purchase. Version 4.12 is quite popular (January 10, 1997, Windows 95/98/2000/XP/Vista) this version is a 30-day trial, but continues to work after that; 4.12 was the last version that did this.

Get it legally here:

http://www.pagetutor.com/downloads/psp412.html

I just installed it on my XP laptop & set the system date forward to 2 March 2015; it LOADS and the trial period message says "You are on day 90 of your 30 day trial" but you click OK and it works fine.

Solve : Photoshop equivalent?

Answer»

Hello all HOPE your Holidays were killer.

Just WONDERING if there was any free software that is similar to photo shop.

Thanks in advance,
MP.You do not state if there is a target OS. In most cases the canonical answer to that question is "The Gimp", which is available for a number of platforms, Windows, Linux, OSX ETC. If you decide to try it, get it from the original SITE to avoid malware or adware:

http://www.gimp.org/

You should avoid GimpShop, which has been hijacked and is full of adware.

Also SEE here for comparison of free and commercial graphics editors:

I've been using GIMP for over a year and find that it's a very good program.

Solve : Turn off spreadsheet auto-transpose?

Answer»

I use OPEN Office spreadsheet. When I copy and paste a FORMULA from one cell to another, it automatically transposes the cell data, like from B4 to C4, or B4 to B5. Most of the time, this is great. Once in a while, it's really annoying. How do I turn it off when I WANT to?You need to use the "Paste Special" and check or uncheck Transpose as seen in screenshot. When you right-click to get the menu Paste Special is at the bottom of LIST.

Solve : Software Suggestion Needed for USB Video capture wildlife?

Answer»

Neighbor came up to me today and asked about if there was an ability to set his laptop with a USB webcam on it pointed out his KITCHEN window at the bird feeder and to capture recording video only when motion is detected by the webcam. Currently he sets his computer to record and it runs for like 5 hours and then he has to then play it back and fast forward to see what species of birds are feeding etc. He said that if the camera only recorded when motion was detected that it would make this so much easier for him. I have never messed with any SOFTWARE like this and so i figured I'd post it here to see if anyone has any suggestions. i have heard of people using similar software in offices as a security MEANS to record when people enter their cubicles etc to find out who is stealing their candy from desk drawer or pens etc, but no idea what software package they used to record just moments where motion was detected and a timeout to stop recording when motion is no longer REGISTERED.

Solve : Program Conflict?

Answer»

I have an HP Photosmart d110 printer/scanner. It's connected to a computer running WinXP. Up to a month or so ago I was able to control the printer from the HP software on the computer. That has suddenly STOPPED being possible. Everything still works, but it is apparent that something is interfering with the operation. It may be a program I installed recently, or it may be an automatic upgrade to one of the existing programs.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can find out where the conflict occurs? I've run Process Explorer, and Autoruns, but haven't found anything suspicious.

You could try this link below and install this free tool to make sure that everything is up to date... it points out what software has known vulnerabilities and available or unavailable updates etc.

Quick way to solve this would be to rebuild the system fresh.

Trying to identify what is causing this issue could involve removing services or software until you pinpoint it, that is if its an actual conflict and not caused by some other issue such as corruption or registry key mess etc.

http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/Why not try uninstalling the HP printer software, downloading the latest version from HP, and installing it? Thanks for the suggestion. I tried that first thing, with no result. Is this a USB printer ? ?
Did you remove it from Control Panel ? /
It needs to be disconnected on re-install and connected when prompted by the software...

Try Soybeans suggestion along with the suggestions above...It is a USB printer. I REMOVED it completely usin Control Panel. I re-installed the software from the ORIGINAL disk.
If I log into the computer using another identity, the program works as it should. This leads to the conclusion that some program in the original identity is causing the interference, I've asked for suggestions as to how I can find the interfering program, not how to solve the problem.Looks like corrupt profile then. If you create NEW user account for yourself and am able to print through this user account, then copy your data from old profile to new for personal data and favorites etc and then once you know that all important data is MOVED over you can then delete this old account. Thanks, Dave. That' a pretty tedious way to handle the problem, but it sounds like it would work.

I'll continue looking for a way to identify conflicting programs, but at this point I don't have much hope.

Solve : Need help auto filling yes no drop downs?

Answer»

All day LONG I have to answer the same questions on a website "no". Is their a SOFTWARE program or a way to have the drop down automatically say no when I go to the page so all I have to do is click save? I have to answer the same question 15 to 20 times on each page and do it about 100 times a day. It would save me so much time if I could GET it to auto populate to no from CHOOSE.

Thanks for your helpCould you type "no" in a Notepad window and then copy and paste? Windows Clipboard, which is the memory feature that holds the last results of a copy action, will hold "no" as long as you have not used the copy COMMAND for some other content. In other words, you could repeatedly paste "no" by using keyboard shortcut Ctrl/V as long as you have not copied something else to the Clipboard.
