Hi!

TODAY I tried upgrade my Windows 10.1803 x64 Pro to 1809 by upgrade assistant.
It was not successful, in upgrade process at END it reports canceling changes and upgrade is cancelled.
It has no any REPORT message about not successful upgrade, nothing.
I tried it two times, not success.

Of course upgrade assistant was executed as admin.
I tried not safe mode - is this the way? Or where I do MISTAKE?

Hi guys, this is my first post so I'm sorry if the format is very messy and if my english is not good. A few days ago I finally got my first self built PC to launch and all was working well until I decided to update my nvidia drivers and restart my computer. After doing that, every time i get past bios it gives me "no signal detected" or it starts with very low resolution and some artifacts. However, if i uninstall the drivers and restart the resolution is fine and there is no artifacts, but the driver in device manager is listed as microsoft basic display adapter, and as soon as I update problems continue. So far the only way I can consistently get a video out is if I use ddu to uninstall the nvidia drivers in safe mode and then I reboot and don't update the drivers. The cpu I have does not have an integrated graphics card so I do not know why the display is completely fine up until I update to nvidia
 

I have tried:

Reinstalling drivers and using ddu in safe mode

Reinstalling older drivers

Cleaning out my gpu slot and gpu

Switching the gpu to a different pce slot

Replacing the power cords for the gpu

Completely reinstalling Windows

Reset the CMOS

Updating bios

I have looked at other solutions online and none of them seem to work. All the parts are relatively new or have never been used so I don't understand why this is happening now. I am able to run some games but performance is not nearly as good without the nvidia drivers. It is driving me crazy. Has anyone else had this problem or knows of a fix?

Newer drivers ain't always better drivers...You could try SDI (Snappy Driver Installer). Because as patio stated, newer isn't always better, and there is all sorts of drivers in the LIBRARIES. It can also detect if a driver that is older would work better with your newer hardware. The best part is, it is open source and free. You can pick it up here. https://sdi-tool.org/

If you are GOING to be looking to be building more computers than just this one, I would consider downloading the full version and keeping on a larger USB stick or external hard drive. It is a good program for troubleshooting because it can almost always find a driver for what you need, even when Microsoft can't find them.

The speed on transfer of files within the hdd (transferring from one folder to other) it starts from 30+ MB/s and  becomes less then 12MB/s even 0-40kbps    this is my laptop a dell m6400 workstation in the above image are it's brief specs.Why do you need to transfer files?
Are you MAKING a copy? Or did you try to move the files?
Poor transfer speed like yu describe, where it slows down at the end, may indicate a hardware issue.

You can use them by explorer.exe Shell: and then the Special Folder CLSID which starts ::{ and ends }

How to select cmd window size by command?
In lines and columns or maybe in pixels.
Also - is POSSIBLE to zoom cmd window size?
I know that insider builds are featuring this option, I'm asking for alternative.
I know that it is possible to enlarge font and then it is bit so.

I have Q to RECURSIVE copy of FOLDER - so folder with subfolders.
When I type e.g.:

it copies only Tools folder files.
How to copy also subfolders?
If is it not possible, exist and tool to use or create any batch or script?

MiroConsole zoom is included in the recent Insider Build 18272. You hold down CTRL key and ROLL the mouse wheel. It will not be in regular WINDOWS 10 until the next release, codenamed 19H1 and expected in April 2019.

I am trying to update a console and it apparently uses IE TLS settings (which I believe are correct) and it needs to get to these websites, but I receive the following message below:

I have over 30 other servers this works on, but the last 10 locations we PUT these NEW servers, only 1 works.  ENVIRONMENTS should be very close, if not EXACTLY similar.  It works on other stations at the same location, but not these.

I tried to mount local folder as drive and it requires network location only.
So, I tried to use webbrowser format like when is local file opened in browser:

file:///F:/VirtualBox/Shared/

Not success - location not found.

I know that any command in command line exist to do it, but don't remember which and if is possible to mount local folder.

So, Q is SIMPLE: How to mount local folder as drive?

the problem is that after copying the file when i connect the ssd to another PC the files don't appear anywhere in the ssd even after checking that the file has been copied to the ssd correctly ...what am i doing wrong 😥Are you trying to copy a movie? That could be a problem, since there is copy protection on them. Try using a thumb DRIVE or another STORAGE medium and see if it works that way.I TURNED THE PC TODAY AND IT STARTED SCANNING THE EXTERNAL SSD FIXING IT ...SO WHEN I TRIED AGAIN THE FILES WERE THERE !!!YAY!!!

So here is my problem guys. Without the VPN activated Im not able to use the google services properly.

Example:

1) The google maps on my PC is not working without the VPN. Only the map loads up but if I search for any location it does nothing. It not able to locate myself too. But whenever I use a VPN everything works smoothly.

2) The recaptcha option in all the websites doesn't even show up in browser. However, when I turn on the VPN and reload the page. The recaptcha option APPEARS.

3) Whenever I use my gmail account, the options such as deleting a mail, formatting texts never appears. However when I turn on the VPN and reload my gmail page. Everything LOOKS normal.

4) To PUT it simple none of the google pulgins or features (I don't know the proper term) never works when my VPN is turned off.

Everything looks fine with my internet connection. I have no problem with in the phone browsers and other laptops connected to the same internet connection.

I don't know what is WRONG. I believe it is something related with the VPN. Could you please help me out?

I have attached the screenshot of my gmail window with the VPN on and off. Please have a look at it.

I also tried deleting my browsers and installed several other browsers such as firefox, chrome, opera. The problem exists in everything.

Hi folks,

I got a mega problem here and it cannot be classified as DOS or a flavour of windows.  I designed my computer so that each drive has there own os system ie one drive has win 7,8 and 10, another drive has win 8 etc. There is no xp or OSx.  This way I can remove any drive without affecting boot up.

I have been using the uEFL bios boot manager to chose the drive that I want and it was working OK until I introduced win 10 to one of the drives with 7 and 8. So what happens now is win 10 just wont play ball even if set as the default OS. If I last logged out of win 10 then the next time I put on the pc and select that particular, I would not get a windows boot menu, it will simply go straight to win 10. Though it goes to my ACCOUNT and I log in, the desktop would not be my desk top or where I left off. I have to reboot and go through the bios boot manager again chose drive and sometimes I have to repeat the 4 times before I get a windows boot manager for that particular drive. Only after going through the windows boot manager and choosing win 10 would I see my own desktop.  There is only one account on that win 10, no other.

Anyway I dont wont to bore you will all the other issues Im facing on my SETUP but I feel that if I can make a usb boot drive then the boot up menu for all drives can be programmed onto it.  The problem I am facing is that if it were dos, I could have used something like EasyBCD but that wont work on current windows os. All the examples of multiboot stuff on google and youtube are for those trying to install an os.  Nobody is designing a bootable usb for choosing which os U want to log into.

I'd be grateful if anyone can help me look into this or make a suggestion on how I can go about it. I remember something called clover back in the days which was a sort of independent boot software that gave the freedom of choosing whichever os u want to boot into but that was not for usb but something similar will be great.

Following the last Windows 10 Update, Windows has used up nearly 50% of the available space on my SYSTEM HDD.

I've RUN a "DiskClean" and got back some space but the biggest space grabber seems to be a folder CALLED C:\bksystem which is nearly as big as the Windows folder!

According to Treesize it has 27% of space, with some 770 subfolders all starting BKxxx, each withva single FILE called index

What is this space grabbing folder and can I delete it ?

Windows 10 - for the LAST couple of weeks after clicking shut down I have been getting a blue screen with the following:

"Closing 1 app and shutting down"
Task Host Window
Task Host is stopping background tasks
(MS\Windows\Device Directory Client\Register User Device)

Lower down page is option "Shut down ANYWAY" - shut down does not happen unless this is clicked. I presume the bracketed item is the app referred to.

My query is: what is Task Host?  and why should this happen out of the blue?  I cant find "Task Host" on my PC and although there are lots of references on the web,  no simlple understandable explanation.

Comments and advice appreciated.Task Host is simply the command that terminates active windows processes ''Tasks", the fact that windows 10 struggles with terminating tasks in a common issue. So this tells me that there may be a program (app) that is in a SENSE arguing with windows when it says it is time to go to bed. So,the idea is to figure out which is doing it. Anti-Virus software would be my first suspect. But what you do is with your COMPUTER on hit the Windows Key + R and type in msconfig             Got to services them check ''Hide all Microsoft Serviced''. DO NOT disable anything you do not recognize,just applications you have installed. Do one at a time-by that I mean uncheck  one then try to shut down. If it happens again try another  one. This a process of elimination. Also look for something called the ''Power troubleshooter'' on you PC. Some success has been reported in using this tool. Try that first.They haven't been back since March...

For some REASON, a few of my icons have shrunken. The display setting is on extra large icons, and the grid boxes are extra large, but INSTEAD of the icon taking up the entire BOX, there is a miniature version in the center, about 1/5 of the size it should be on XL and about half sized on large.

I have tried moving all of my icons to a new folder on my SSD and CHANGING the icon to that copy, but it didn t work.

If i CHANGE the display setting to medium icons everything is the right size, but some of them just won t blow up when i use the large or extra large setting...

How can one change to local accounts and delete the MS online accounts WITHOUT having to re-install this Windows?To switch your computer to a local account:

My proven, reliable steady steed Win XP is used for all my personal data. Obviously, I use this on a PC WITHOUT an Internet access. Another PC, USING Linux (Ubuntu) has Internet access.
Is it possible to run both these operating systems, BUT STILL maintaining the security of my personal data under Windows XP?

When Linux is used, could any THIRD party gain access to my personal data used with Windows XP?

I wish to MOVE from two PCs to a single PC.Linux is more secure than XP. As long as your dont install something bad and ALWAYS get updates then your secure for Linux and no one can access your data but yourself.If you want you can disable your network drivers within the XP installation so that it cannot access the Internet at all.

The system will not boot into Windows 10 Pro

In the Begining
I installed a NEW Hard drive into the system
I proceeded to install Win 10 Pro which went along fine until it did its normal shutdown and restart but would not continue the installation. The system showed the Win 10 screen and the animated loading making circles and then animation quit and system just hangs there.
I then shut down and turned back on and it went to "system did not start correctly" with options. Tried option to reset PC which runs for a time and then just sticks on the loading dots and freezes there.
I have tried with DIFFERENT memory as well.
The hard drive symbol does show OCCASIONAL use or flashing.
It is running AMD bios ver 210 and there is a later ver 215 which I have not done.
Also noted that it is running hotter than I remember it running.
Where is Win 10 Pro from ? ?

Did it have over-heating ISSUES prior to this ? ?

If you swapped memory are you sure it is for that laptop ? ?1 Legal win 10 if that is what you refer to?
Was running hot before but working fine. Heat never caused a problem
Had 2 sticks memory and tried with one stick instead of 2

It just STARTED not SENDING. I GO to what's been sent and it's empty.
What can I do to REMEDY this problem?

does this only happen in Edge, have you tried another browser?what about deleting that favourite and recreating it?

In my C drive Pictures I found some, but not all, of my folders missing and thought I had  lost them and finally found them in Pictures in OneDrive! I don't RECALL installing or opening one drive, I may have long AGO but never USE it and certainly did not activate it.

I am having trouble adding my Gmail account to the Windows Mail app. This is a fresh, clean install of Windows 10 Home edition. I am not sure why the Mail app doesn't want to ad my Gmail account. I don't have any issues adding and syncing my mail with any out apps (outlook, Apple Mail)
 Any help would be very much appreciated. I don't think Home edition allows it...however i could be wrong.So here's the weird thing. I am able to add a different Gmail account, but not this specific one. If frustrating, I'm not sure why I am unable to add it. I trifled to google the error code, but I had no luck. Have you enabled POP3 email in your Gmail account?  If not, I believe that may be preventing you from getting Windows Mail to recognize your Gmail account. Thank you for the suggestion. Yes I have enabled POP3, in fact I have another Gmail account that works just fine with the Windows Mail app, I even DOUBLE check the settings for both accounts, and they are exactly the same. At first POP3 wasn't enabled on the account I am having trouble with, but then I enabled it, and I am still not able to use with with Windows Mail. It's very frustrating. Since there are 2 accounts you need to select another setting...the drop down menu will list choices.I only had the other account on there as a way to troubleshoot to se if it was related to my account, or related to the Windows mail app. I removed the other account so no accounts are active with the mail app. The original account I'm trying to use, always SHOWS the "something went wrong" message, and it NEVER adds the account. See Read Gmail messages on other email CLIENTS using POP.  You MIGHT need to change one or more settings.

if you are WINDOWS 10 - Start > Settings > Sign-in Options > Password section, click Change, enter your account password and leave the new password blank to remove it.You won't be prompted to enter your password now (there isn't ONE) and Windows will just LOG you in.Easier way is START-RUN and type: netplwiz
Then UNcheck the BOX that reads: Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer+ 1

Allow me to explain...

Soon I'll start a job at home that requires me to use Windows 10 Home.
At the moment I have a pc that came with Win10 already. I have 3 accounts, for each of us in the family.
I do have backups of the whole HD of course.

But to keep things even smoother and further from technical difficulties along the way, would it be a good idea to get another HD with its own copy of Win10 boot from. That way if something goes south with the personal HD, it won't affect my work HD.
Or should there be no reason to expect such problems on the first PLACE?
Or there is a better solution?

what are the ages of the other PC users?what is the nature of the work?is security or data SENSITIVITY a concern?budget?
The best solution is one computer for home and another for work. If that's not in the cards, then a SECOND instance of Windows doesn't make much sense to me.I agree that you should have a second computer for work, that way things won't get tangled between personal and work.

However, even if you stick with a single computer, instead of a second copy of Windows, just keep frequent backups.  Tailor the frequency of the backups by how important the work data is and how OFTEN it changes.  If you keep system images then if your hard drive dies, you'd only need to replace the drive and do a restore to be back in business.

I have had quite a few jobs where I did work from home.  The companies I have worked for would never allow use of a personal computer, they always provided (and supported) a computer and would only allow the use of that particular computer to access the company domain.
If it's the same PC with 2 HDD's you can install Win to the 2nd HDD without buying it...perfectly legal.Thank you so much for your ideas and suggestions guys!

For now I am sticking to the idea of getting a SFF pc (Small Form Factor computer), and use a 4-port KVM switch between them.

I desperately need to replicate an already printed document in EXACTLY the same font style and size it was printed in.

I scanned and then saved this document as a PDF and then opened it in a program I found recommended for ANALYZING font and font size in a given selection of text called PDF-XChange Viewer in order to analyze a sample of the text for text properties. It allows one to select the text to be analyzed with the text selecting tool (Tools, Basic Tools, Select Tool), then you right click the selection, then click on "Text Properties..." and then choose "Formatting" in the left SIDE pane.

PDF-XChange Viewer program says the font is Helvetica which SEEMS to be accurate but, oddly, the program has determined that every other word of my selected text is alternatively 9 or 9.5 size font. Can anyone please explain that to me? To my eye, the text is uniform and not of different sizes. Why would PDF-XChange Viewer read alternate words as 2 different font sizes?

After making several necessary adjustments to the content of the document, I saved it as an RTF in Word but I have the latest version of Windows 10 on my laptop and the version of Word which came bundled with it does not OFFER any of the incremental font sizes available - only the integers: 8, 9, 10, 11 for example.

I then tried printing it in font size 9 and it seems to be too small and then in 10 and that seems to be a little too large so I think 9.5 must be right but I can't find a program that will allow me to save the document in Helvetica 9.5 font and print it out without re-formatting it.

1. Would anyone be able to recommend a program which does what PDF-XChange Viewer purports to do - in other words, to analyze font and font size in a given selection of text? I would like to verify its analysis by finding another program which gives me the same result.

2. Would anyone be able to recommend a word processing program which will allow me to choose Helvetica 9.5 for a font style and size and then print my document out WITHOUT re-formatting it.

Hello, I own an Alienware M14xR2 that recently i've been having performance PROBLEMS with. It has a gt 650m with a core i7-3630QM. I bought this back in late 2012 or early 2013 and this thing is pretty beat up, like really beat up. they have had some impact on performance but not to the level that i am expirencing  now. I 've had a several problem in the past where i have had tempratures reach 90 degrees but thats all fixed now. The problem is im GETTING HORRIBLE performance while my temp is very good Last week the performance was fine. And didn't install anything since then. I WOULD gladly apprecite it if i could get some help if you need any more information about this system email me and ill respond as soon as i possibly can, thanks in advance.5 years old...a backup / wipe and a clean install is overdue...With a Laptop which is beat up i would be testing the hard drive. Seems your model shipped with a Toshiba 750gb which by now could be end of life. You could run a few programs to test the drive HEALTH.

The graph on the website is for a similar drive to yours. I think you will find the data transfer will be all over the range from as low as 20 to 180, if so then this would be one reason for the computer running slow.

This will confirm if the drive is failing.
If the drive is slow consider getting a 250GB SSD drive they are getting really cheap. You could either transfer the old drive or if the programs and data are not needed do a clean install.

I was planning on moving country, so i disassemble my pc and take out my HDD. All is fine, until i tried to open my HDD FILES in my laptop. At first, it did shows all the data that i have on my pc.

The problem would be that i can't open my ACCOUNT folder in the users folder inside my HDD on my laptop for some reason, even though i have admin permission on my laptop. Usually you need an admin permission to open the folder on my pc, but i think it's probably because i'm using my laptop that has a different password and admin altogether, so i can't open my users file even when i have the admin permission on my laptop.

Is it because my HDD and my laptop has different password and admin permission, or is it something else? And how do i access the files in my HDD now? Do i have to download an application or is it just a MISUNDERSTANDING? Can anyone EXPLAIN?

If it helps, i'm using an ORICO brand connector from my HDD to my laptop. I can access certain files, although i can't access my users account folder that holds almost all my data in my HDD due to this. When i give it permission, there's just the green bar on the address going up SLOWLY, until it stops almost at the end.

This might sound stupid and all, but i'm quiet lost on this kind of stuff. Any input, walkthrough, or help would be appreciated. Thank you very much!

For clipboard exist command CLIP - I tried to get help, but error is that command not exist. I know that can't to be USED without parameters - where to get syntax?

in this case you could echo %CD%, or use dir /b as Salmon Trout indicated on the file, and redirect it to CLIP to copy the current directory to the clipboard.

Windows 3.11 has no documented user-accessible way of copying data from a command prompt window via a command to the Windows Clipboard (Of course, you can use the control menu to mark and copy text shown in the command prompt window). Programs that are AWARE of Windows can detect it and will be able to copy and paste to and from the Windows clipboard though.

Hope this helps.Worth noting that the requirements are incomplete. Since Windows 8, Windows has also required that the processor support the Execute Disable bit.

This is particularly relevant for a Pentium 4 because only later iterations of the Prescott Core (and Cedar Mill) support it. You'd want to VERIFY you have a compatible processor before wasting time trying to install Win10.

And of course whether it is possible is arguably DISTINCT from whether it is wise...

I have been searching long and hard for a solution to this PROBLEM as I previously used Miracast on almost a daily basis to mirror my screen from my laptop to my PC.

I had a very old laptop that was able to connect to my TV with very little PROBLEMS, I recently decided to buy a xiaomi gaming laptop, however to my dismay when I try to connect to my XiaoMi TV with miracast it will SAY it is connected and the screen on my TV will turn black as if it was about to mirror my pc screen but then just suddenly disconnects with no VIDEO or audio being displayed.

I have been googling for the past few days for potential SOLUTIONS but as of now I cannot find any which is why I am turning to making a thread.

I recently had a new computer made from an established shop and it's having problems with BSOD. It's a Ryzen 2700x with 32GB of 3000 MHZ Ram, a GTX 1080, and WINDOWS 10 Pro. Here are the steps I've TRIED already:

- memtest86 one pass
- chkdsk /f /r
- sfc /scannow
- I have no yellow exclamations in Device Manager
- For potential issues, this computer is using Avast Antivirus and a generic Pleomax Korean keyboard that I just plug and played drivers for
- The only software I've added has been Steam, poker clients, poker software, and PostGRESQL.
- I did not get to test the system extensively before installing these programs since they've never caused me issues before.

These are the 3 error messages I received, all spaced about 1 hour apart. I think for one of them, the computer was noticeably lagging/stuttering right before it crashed.

I ripped a CD onto my HD using Windows Media Player. (For those who INSIST on CONTINUITY, this thread actually comes in reading order before this one.)

When I downloaded some album art and tried to save it as "folder.jpg", it wouldn't let me - said there was already a file. So WMP automatically drops an album cover in the folder? Coolcoolcool.

I didn't see anything in the folder, so I turned on "Show Hidden Items" in File Explorer. Sure enough, the file was there - along with an "AlbumArt_{B5020207-474E-4720-CCEE-6D2E71CAE800}_Large.jpg" and "AlbumArt_{B5020207-474E-4720-CCEE-6D2E71CAE800}_Small.jpg".

I clicked on the fun "Hide Selected Items" button to DEselect "folder.jpg", and nothing happened. I right-clicked on the file, and selected properties - the "Hidden" BOX is checked but grayed out.

I launched explorer.exe as Administrator, and had the same issues.

In "Security", I have full permissions for everything on the file except for "Special Permissions". That seems to be unchangeable, even as Administrator.

So what gives, Internet? How do I unhide this file?

It's because the file has the SYSTEM attribute set. That attribute is not accessible within Windows Explorer (and never has been). If the System Attribute is set then the Hidden Attribute is "locked" and cannot be changed.

You can change it using the command prompt and attrib.

It loads only enough to show its dots-going-around animation, but then it never goes PAST that.
And that's whether I have called it from the rEFInd loader or from the Live USB Installer drive.

I decided to try again and wait longer on the Live USB Installer drive this time. It eventually loaded the repair tool. So the good thing is that I have access to using command lines in the Command prompt. I just need to find which command lines I can use to repair the MBR and or WBM (Windows Boot Manager). Anyone?!
MIND you, I already tried the Start-Up Repair tool. It said it was not able to repair it.

To give you some background on this situation: I just reinstalled Win10 in my 1Tb HD, then I installed Ubuntu 18.04 in my 125 Gb SSD. Somehow I ended up loosing my WBM as a choice in the list of drives in BIOS.
For many days it was not much of a problem since I still could load Win10 via the GRUB loader.
Then I installed a better loader: Tux4Ubuntu. Strangely this loader was opening GRUB when I chose Linux, as opposed to loading Ubuntu right up.
I was recommended to have a booting partition not just on one drive, but both. Along with their respective booting files, including rEFInd.
So I did that by booting off from an Ubuntu Live USB drive, ran Gparted (Partitions Editor), and copy the boot partition from HD drive, to the SSD drive.
Now when loading Tux4Ubuntu, it also loads rEFInd among the choices. However, whether I choose to load Win10 from the choices in T4U or from rEFInd, Win10 stalls.
Maybe I just have to wait long enough, as I did for Win10 Live USB drive.
But before I try that, since I already gained access to the Command promt, I figure I would take advantage of that and see if I can find a command line that could help repair the MBR and or WBM.

Do you have a full backup of the Windows 10 partition?

Without knowing more details, here is the only think I can recommend.
Beg, borrow or buy another hard drive for use as a spare.. It does not have to be huge. Even  8 GB is big enough for a test. The objective is to see if you can do a simple install of Windows 10 without anything else. Small HDD are now super cheap and ought to be part of your tool kit.

Put aside the SSD and large HDD.  Put the spare HDD Install Windows 10 from a verified USB device. Make a note of how long it takes to install. reboot several times and make a note of the start up times. Normally Windows 10 should boot up and run in about 90 seconds. Longer would indicate Widows has found some issue.

If all goes well using the spare drive, this verifies that your do not have any mahjor HARDWARE issues. Therefore the problem must be either the large drive or . more likely, the boot up method. IMO it is better not to use GRUB to boot Windows.

Unless you really need Ubuntu on your system, my advice is to avoid using it for now. My personal preference is to boot Ubuntu from an external HDD as a USB drive. Works good for me.  Ditto for Linux Mint. I use the BIOS to select the boot device, not the Windows Boot Loader.

Also, IMO, the SSD will do more for Windows  10 than  for Ubuntu.  Ubuntu is already a very compact OS and is fast enough. 

But others may have a better idea. That is the best I can do. I have spent countless hours trying to put both Linux and Windows on the same HDD. It is a real pain.

Fortunately it's such a fresh install that I don't have much there I wouldn't mind loosing. It would mostly be the time needed to reinstall Win10, programs and games. Along with their respecting configurations.

Microsoft is being sued by three people who claim a Windows 10 update destroyed their data and damaged their computers.

• Install Linux on SSD, while HD is unplugged.
• Swap drives to install Win10 on the HD, while SSD is unplugged.
• Install rEFInd in Windows 10 (See instructions below).
• Plug the SSD with Linux.
• Boot up.
• If rEFInd doesn't show, go to the BIOS and swap the order of the drives.

I start computer ubuntu comes up with grub screen i cant find windows BOOT manager in bios or boot order. But it can not fix everything. That is why people have-to make backups.

GRUB may have overwritten the boot loader.

System RESTORE is still running but THINGS are not changing. All programs are returned at the default installation. The disk and CPU always run at a high level even if I do not do anything.

My problem is that randomly, certain programs will drop to around 1-2 fps. This doesn't HAPPEN at first, and I'm not sure what exactly happens that causes this, because the programs will work fine for a decent portion of TIME before slowing down. Examples of programs that do this: Spotify, Discord, Steam, Chrome

Some more context is that if Spotify or Discord drop, I can USE the browser versions and they work fine (unless chrome isn't working either) I MAKE sure that I have as few background programs running as possible.

Some help or advice would be good.What does the CPU/GPU temp show when checking system temps. That CPU has ability to TURBO to 3.6 ghz and maybe its running too hot and thermal throttles causing the lag that your getting. Also do you have plenty of free space or is the system heavily filled with data and paging is causing lag with a stuffed drive maybe.

I fried the headphone jack on my HP P7-1549 desktop today, by removing the soundblasters cable from it while one of the few speakers linked to it was still on. It made a buzzing sound and since then the is no sound or very little unless I CRANK it up at maximum.
A few YEARS ago the same happened with an older PC and I succeeded to remap the headphone jack to any of the 5 others on the back using win7's regedit and old Realtek drivers : https://www.sevenforums.com/sound-audio/2197-realtek-hd-changing-jack-output-reassignments-fix.html

Since then no one seems to have found a way to do the same with Windows 10. I would love a programmer to make a simple software to choose which jack to remap easily.

My only workaround for now is a little usb drive with a portable soundcard, but I hope it's temporary.I plugged a jack into a Win 10 machine and a menu box appeared asking me to choose what I WANTED to use it for.

I thought this was std Win 10 process??If front panel audio jack is bad you can unplug the audio port plug to the front panel and the system wont sense the loopback of this as a valid audio port MAYBE. Some of the audio port connections have a single wire that acts as a loop back for the system to know that there is a audio jack connected at the other end of the connection and unplugging it may be the cure and then just use the rear audio jack. If the audio jack is the one that is in the rear that is damaged that is integrated to the main board then the only option is to replace the main board or use one of those USB stick audio cards ( or ) install a sound card and have that set as the connection that you want if a PCI Express slot is available to taking a sound card which then bypasses the integrated sound.

In nearly two years of owning this machine, this has never happened - but now it has happened TWICE in seven days.

Today when I was booting, it prompted me for my BitLocker password.

(I don't remember if it was booting or coming out of Sleep last WEEK).

What gives? Is this from a Windows Update? Did I do something? What's HAPPENING to me, MAN? It's infamous WIN updates at it again...same thing happened to me last week...

This has me confused.
I am using Windows 10 Home 32 bit.
When I find the place where I can edit the PATH, there are two dialog boxz  I do not understand. It SEEMS I can edit just the PATH for  current user. So I tried that and it does not work. Or else I don't understand how it works.

I just want to add one more directory to the end of the path.

Is there a clean and easy guide to how to edit the PATH in Windows 10?  In BOX for current user or System click on PATH. Then click on Edit. Then Click on EDIT TEXT. Move the cursor to the end of the path, add whatever you want (you can EVEN browse to the desired addition) and when you are done, click on OKa quick way to get to the Environment Variables window is to run this command; rundll32 sysdm.cpl,EditEnvironmentVariablesThanks both of you.
After some trial and error I found the problem. I can not edit the itby bity little line of text that is truncated.
So I have to COPY and PASTE into notepad, increase the font size,turn on ward-wrap and then edit the line. Than past eit back. 

To verify my work,  I open a CMD box and increase font size
See picture below. I put F:\QB64 on the tail.   

Now I can invoke  the EXE files in that folder when I am working in another place.

Reboot the pc and see if it still works.


Doing it that way may only last for the current session.

For some three years I have tried to get accustomed to Windows 10 .
It's still hard to do.   

So I'm having an issue where my CURRENT open program or game will randomly minimize itself and I'm not sure why its happening or what I can do. The issue just started like 30 minutes before this post. It first happened during a game I play called League of Legends, then it even happened while I was watching YouTube. If anybody knows what's wrong that would be great.I'd run a malware scan with malwarebytes and see if you have something triggering trying to take the focus of the computer. If something triggers while a game is running that trigger event can kick the game to being minimized as a NEW window opens for example, so do you see a window with something SET as the focus on your desktop when this happens? It could be malware that is trying to pop up something that is causing your browser to be brought forward of your game. Additionally running the game with browser closed might fix this issue if it is some code that is triggering and kicking the focus to it vs your game.

Lastly my wifes computer for example had a weird event like this happening and we found out that if her mouse MOVED to the furthest down POSITION to the edge of the screen the game world of warcraft would minimize and desktop would be brought forward. The fix for her was to shut off Windowed mode and set full screen mode to where the entire display area if for the game and so a mouse pointer drifting to bottom of screen wouldnt trigger it to minimize the game.If it only just started, the first thing you want to do is reboot and see if the problem persists. If it does, then you should certainly follow the suggestions in the post above this one from DaveLembke.

I had just attempted to use an Acer desktop USB Recovery drive, unsuccessfully.
Then even though I had set up the booting order to start from another USB drive with Linux, it would read the USB drive, but wouldn't load it. Instead it would go back to the Acer Recovery drive files, and try to run that again, as if it had kept that in the HD. Oh sorry, I was using my USB Acer Recovery drive to reinstall Win10 by the way.
Now it's even worst because it won't even load anything at all, not even BIOS! In fact the monitor is just plain black. I can see the pc is on, but that's it.

I suspect the Acer desktop USB Recovery drive didn't work because it said that a part was missing, something like that. I guess since I changed the order of the drives when I introduced the SSD drive, the recovery process was expecting to find a different configuration.
What now?

Should I remove the SSD drive and see what gives?

THANKS guys I'll bet you a Pint it SENT the recovery files to the SSD...it shouldn't have been connected til the PC was runnin proper.

Thanks a bunch patio So, removing the SSD did help to regain access to the BIOS and somewhat control what it boots on.
It still refuses to BOOT from my Linux Live USB drive. Instead it continues loading the previous Recovery process.
However, it works to run the Windows 10 INSTALLER in the USB drive I made (go figure!). I have not run it because I still want to be able to see the contents of this HD, I am hoping it didn't erase it.
Just in case there's something wrong with my Linux USB drive, I am about to make another one to try. If that still doesn't succeed to boot from, I don't know what can I do to check the HD contents. Maybe I can bring that HD to my older pc. Quote from: drpeppercan on August 21, 2018, 07:50:23 AM

How to retrieve a desktop icon in Windows 10 ? 

It is  not an icon that's listed in all my programs (or do you call them sites?) that pop up on my screen
when I to to the START button.

It's an icon for a folder that i had created.

It had been on my desktop for a long time, but SUDDENLY it vanished.

Open Windows Explorer and Right CLICK on the Folder in question
while holding down the right mouse button, drag the folder to the Desktop
release the right mouse button
click on "COPY HERE"

Looks like you turned on Tablet Mode to me. It's under SETTINGS->System->Tablet mode.

There is also a "Tablet Mode" button in the Action Center.You are right.
And it does not work. It is stuck om tablet mode.

This desktop PC has two user accounts.
On the other ACCOUNT the tablet mode toggles back and forth.
But on the user I use more often, it does not toggle.

At this POINT I am willing to consider REBUILDING the user account. 

On second thunk, I will not do anything.
 Some day Microsoft will fix it.
Maybe.

From 2 years ago. Is this the best alternative I have today?
I'm concerned about cluttering with all the updates that version would need to catch up.

About this USB Drive given by the PC maker: it's called USB System Recovery Drive. But it didn't come with it's own Windows 10 key number. So I can't just get an updated Win10 installer and use its key number with it.

About the clutter, the reason why it worries me is because the more updates I need, the more space they'll take. And presently I have a space issue in my 125 Gb SSD drive. Reason why I'm seriously contemplating to remove Win10 from that small drive, and install it in my 1 Tb HD drive.

The files made obsolete by an update can be removed if they are even left. Your restored Windows install won't grow to fill a 125 GB drive. That's exactly what I was expecting for my SSD. But for some reason I keep running out of space. The system was notifying me of low space every other day. Believe me when I say I have tried just about everything. In fact, other than the apps Windows 10 CAME with, and Twitch (280 Mb) I am only keeping a few apps that are not larger than 75 Mb in C (SSD). All the other larger apps (Gimp, Blender, LibreOffice, Astroneer, Dying Light, L4D2.) I keep them in the HD drive. Of course, all media (videos, music, and photos) are all in the HD drive too (and backed up in an external HD). I already did the Disk Cleanup in the Properties window too. Oh, And I have checked that box for compressing the C drive (which instead of shrinking grew like 2 Gbs actually).
I just managed to find more apps to move out, so I'll be ok for sometime. But if C continues running out of space I'll have no choice but to move it to the HD drive.

Recently, i noticed on my desktop of my laptop, the Win10 update to 18003. I think that is the version. I am writing this on my WIN 7 system. I did the update and all WENT well so far. My actual desktop computer did not get the update yet. Is it possible to import that update icon to my desktop pc and update it there also?Have you checked for updates by going into SETTINGS? CLICK "Start", click the little gear above the power icon, click "Update & Security" then click "Check for Updates". That's all I had to do to get the 1803 Update. Are you sure that the icon on your desktop does not say "Windows 10 Upgrade"? (which is totally DIFFERENT from the 1803 update)You can also use the Windows Upgrade Assistant provided by Microsoft to upgrade to the latest version of Windows 10 which is 1803.
