Solve : IRC not working, well? |
Answer» I just downloaded mIRC but when I enter a hub I see no chat taking PLACE, I can't download files and the usual rules message dosent pop up. My firewalls are disabled and I even tried disabling Norton anti virus but the same thing happens. Bad move here. No chat software is worth that. Have you tried something else or just this ONE program? I don't think you should use IRC when you disable your virus scanner in an attempt to GET it working. Something tells me you haven't got any idea of what IRC can be used for.I've only tried mIRC, I was told it was the most reliable, and I don't know of any others. And I'll try most anything to get it working.try another download of it>UNINSTALL the old one...... info link>http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/irctutorial.html |

Solve : Outlook Express 'Directory Service'? |
Answer» I'm having a problem with my OE (6.0) hanging on one PARTICULAR account, which looks right, but anyway... If you need them, you'll know about it.Well, um, yeah. Just trying to head off a problem at the pass... Quote I'm having a problem with my OE (6.0) hanging on one particular account, which looks right, but anyway..."Directory Service"... Oh, you mean the yellow pages, right? And, you've got that in OE, right? I've used OE for years. That's a new one to me. Tools=>Accounts=>ALL/MAIL/NEWS/DIRECTORY SERVICEOK. I've never really paid any attention to that part of OE and I have no clue what the items listed under Directory Service are for. I also have four in my OE. Maybe they're STANDARD ones loaded by default. I use OE for newsgroups as well as EMAIL; now that I think about it, I have LOOKED at Directory Service and wondered what it was but never investigated further. |

Solve : Adobe Premiere Export issue? |
Answer» I have use of Premiere both here at home, and at school. Here at home, I want to export my finished TIMELINES as WMVs to send via email for review. At school, I've been ABLE to save to WMV just fine in Premiere, but not here at home. I don't even see the option to export as WMV here. I know for a fact that the version of Premiere I'm using here is the same as that at the school and I've done all the updates I can. Both the system at school and my home system are running Windows XP and use Adobe Premiere 6.0 Any ideas? (Yes, I know I can IMPORT the AVIs into Movie Maker and then export to WMV. I have done that, but for some reason the files don't play. The audio goes fine, but the image is frozen. And yes, I have updated Media Player as well.) I only have SP1 at the moment. Stuck on a dial up connection for the time being and haven't had time to wait for SP2 to download. I'll probably order the CD or see if SOMEONE I know has it. |

Solve : backup software for new computers? |
Answer» HELLO, I have to WRITE a term paper about following subject: Explain why computer retailers do not include a back-up of all software on a new computer. I have no clue about computers and I have to write a 200 word term paper with a footnote and I have to list 2 internet sources. Please GIVE me some ideas why it is like that and maybe some KEYWORDS i can put into the electronic resource search sites. Thank you for your help, :-?Quote Hello, That's an odd question. Surely the answer is that they don't include a backup of the software; they provide installation disks? I confess I'm not sure what is meant by the question, but since it's only a 200-word paper, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Google for "software licensing" and you might hit gold. Costs..... Though that's alot less than 200 words so you might have to embellish a little bit... patio. 8-)Only 199 words to go now! Plus you can cite Patio as an Internet reference. |

Solve : lost pictures fm my hard drive? |
Answer» Ok, call me a Boob... Hence my login... I was on travel, came home, family said computer would not boot up.. Long story short, I couldn't do anything with the system, had to call dell (runnung XP home ed) and eventually did a quick format and reloaded operating system... Well, the wife wound up saving baby pictures on the C drive (where the operating system is and the one I did the format on)when I told her to save it on the D drive... So guess who's in the dog house??? If anyone knows how I can possibly RETRIEVE the pictures, I would greatly appreciate any assistance....Quote ...did a quick format and reloaded operating system....... You're SOL. Fido's moving out and you're moving in...permanently. Formatting permanently destroys all DATA. Boob.......Hummm ...that's not what your wife said........ ....well then it's all Dells fault.......LOL . Joking aside there are hard drive restoration and recovery services available...even on formatted drives......but its very , very , very pricey. The odds are that unless you used some very good drive scubber when you formatted that the old data may be able to be recovered. ( I would take some more baby pics) .....and just a TIP....store them on a cd in future....... Good luck and I hope Fidos doghouse isnt flea infected . DL65 you could try this >http://www.ontrack.com/freesoftware/?pageTarget=Software&buttonName=Free+Software or even this>http://www.theabsolute.net/sware/dskinv.html or check the camera...it may have stored them in the memchip...Just wanted to provide an update... It seems that the link that Merlin_2 provided is pretty *censored* good.. I downloaded the trial version of ontrack.com's easy recovery professional and it analyzed my hd and can recover about 85 - 95% of all my lost pics and data... kudos to Merlin.. The free download will analyze then show you what is recoverable and then in order to extract the info, you have to purchase the software which is good for use on 20 hard drives (anyone interested in splitting the cost?) Cost: $500, a lot cheaper than sending in the hd which can RUN fm $600 - $2200... Thanks again and if anyone is seriously interested in sharing the cost, let me know.. Boob you did have to purchase the software bob...is was a suggestion...that stuff like that is out there if you are in dire straits...and the link was for you not to be out of pocket...and just goes to prove that if you format a harddrive... all is not deleted... |

Solve : All Programs Won't Open? |

Answer» I have a Sony Vaio Laptop and I think I got a virus thru Limewire. Nothing will open except limewire. I can't get on the internet, email, control panel, my computer, nothing. I can't even do a system restore. The only thing I can do is Limewire. I don't have recovery DISK and I don't want to do that cause I have stuff I need to keep. I'd like to resolve this without formatting if possible. I have XP Proffessional. Can you do anything via Safe Mode? No. Its doin the same thing in safe mode.Quote I don't have recovery disk and I don't want to do that cause I have stuff I need to keep. You wouldn't have been in this situation had you taken proper precautions. I assume you have scanned for viruses and installed a firewall by now? Recovery disks will not remove any stored information, they will only replace Windows files I believe.. You can use the repair console when booting off the Windows XP CD.trekkie28001.....Do you have a floppy drive? I would use another pc ....and go to http://vil.nai.com/vil/averttools.asp and D/l Stinger V 2.41. onto a floppy disc and then try and run it on the infected machine ....... let US know how you make out dl65 Quote You wouldn't have been in this situation had you taken proper precautions. Easy Raptor.. not everyone knows to make backups. I don't bother with them EITHER. Quote I assume you have scanned for viruses and installed a firewall by now? Just how do you suppose this be done if the user can't open anything?Quote Easy Raptor.. not everyone knows to make backups. I don't bother with them either. I never said he had to create backups. I never create backups. I was talking Common Sense®, virus SCANNER, firewall, latest MICROSOFT (Security) updates Quote Just how do you suppose this be done if the user can't open anything? Solve : Mozilla Firefox content blocker? |
Answer» Are there any extensions avaible that can block whatever content I'd like it to block?I believe it already has some functionality built in. You can specify which SITES to allow images, which sites to accept cookies from and which pages you want to accept pop-ups. You can specify which sites to allow images, I thought of that, however, I would have to browse each website with content I wish not to view and then put a lot of time in disabling each image. Quote which sites to accept cookies from I only accept cookies from websites I want to accept cookies from, (Almost none), however, this does stop not the page from displaying. Quote and which pages you want to accept pop-ups. Firefox blocks each pop-up. I was hoping I would not have to download ADDITIONAL software, Firefox its plugins are out of sight.I realise it's hardly perfect. But like firewalls and AV Apps, this sort of thing is generally done better by external applications. I think the only way forward is to maybe find a "suggestion box" type thing so you could put the idea forward to the developers. Of course, even if it got implemented you'd still need to wait for the future version... Say.. You're a programmer, aren't you...? I thought you may like to try this>http://beatthecheaters.com/cookieselector.htmlI have an extension like that, it shows me what kind of cookie I am looking at, I use Firefox to block cookies, never IE. Quote Say.. You're a programmer, aren't you...? Well, I do know quite a bit of PHP, Python and... erm... BASIC... Actually I did try to find out some INFORMATION on how to code extensions for Mozilla. For the most part we're talking XML, which isn't really too bad a language, at least in the grand SCHEME of things (Hah! Geddit! SCHEME! Hah hah hah... Erm, I'll get my coat...)Quote
The only thing you really need is The Proxomitron, I've had it installed but I'm too busy constantly saving the world to actually check it out.Are you paranoid...on cookies...everyone is being spyed on...cct...car you may drive..bus you may use or the tube etc ...who cares..maybe the graveyard is also covered by spy...cams...surf the net and forget it raptor...and this applies to all ..interested..Quote surf the net and forget it Thats why so many people need help in getting rid of virus or spyware problems. They "surf the net and forget it" untill everything goes to *censored* in a hand basket. Thats a bad bit of advise, security wise. Not really if mr gates and co..insist on updates...which goes to prove a point that third -party software...backsup m$oft problems....which is crazy...people expect the software ...to do what it should..and need nothing but it...WHO carries the can for m$oft.....another point.is msgates programers are still using oldsoftware as new on newsoftware...win3.1 on >:)longhorn..............why some folks think that when purchasing a NEW software is NEW not so....lynx...whereare you... verdict so far on longhorn the usual flash graphics...BIG CLOCK..still testing beta version...save cash stick with the animal you have..Quote Thats why so many people need help in getting rid of virus or spyware problems. They "surf the net and forget it" untill everything goes to *censored* in a hand basket. Thats a bad bit of advise, security wise. Or they never bother to learn. If someone has heard of a (DECENT) content blocker, do let me know. It's not security wise, but more morale wise-related.Slightly off topic here. Noticing your sig Merlin. Can I just point out that finding bugs in a Windows/Microsoft Beta is a bit like finding seagulls at a council rubbish tip: neither difficult nor surprising. I've said this before and I'll say it again. Windows, contrary to popular belief, is not the only operating system out there. There are (literally) hundreds of Linux distros out there on the net, or avaliable in the shops. |

Solve : Proxomitron as content blocker?? |
Answer» Is it possible to CONFIGURE the Proxomitron software as a content blocker?this maybe better>http://www.aerotags.com/Quote Do you own a website and need to protect your HTML files with password, encrypt the content of your web PAGES or hide source code of your HTML/XML DOCUMENTS? http://www.spyblocker-software.com/spyblocker/iblockhelp.shtm :-/Thats what the block files and filters are for. You can block almost anything you want blocked - including entire domains. There are MANY filters already written by others and freely available.Lots of stuff: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=proxomitron+content+blocker&btnG=Search Some forums in your "neck of the woods".I'll look into that, but I'd still prefer a Firefox content blocker.. |

Solve : Removing Norton? |
Answer» I think you are good to go. You have done your homework. then realized that she was using NIS 2003, which is no longer supported, so they cut her off. That really doesn't sound too unreasonable for any paid software, although I wouldn't use their current offering for free! I agree to a point I guess. Maybe I am just biased cuz I hate Norton. PKThey used to make a good product (pre-2003). I just can't BELIEVE how it has deteriorated, but that seems to happen to all products that SYmantec has acquired. Some people swear by it. So, whatever floats your boat. Just as a follow up note: I was visiting the friend whose computer I liberated from Norton (with your help) today and after a few days' use (she had been on VACATION), she said she now feels "free." She has noticed an improvement in performance and enjoys the low profile, yet trustable protection of Avast. She said that Norton prevented her from doing many things with all of its warnings and "protection." Thanks again. PKThanks for posting back. This tool has been working fine for me. |
