Solve : Sending Emails from outlook?

Answer»

Hello

I've used outlook express and yahoo mail account for years on a number of different computers. I BUY a new computer and transfer across the settings (they are the same) but I can receive but not send emails. The mail server times me out, and this is whether I have my virus scanner on or not. I thought it may have been COINCIDENCE but i use another computer with the same settings and it works!!

Any suggestions, could it be something specific to the computer? The only other change I can think about is that it is a wireless NETWORK rather than wired, and it isn't operating MS Office but everything else is fine....

Any help is appreciated
Your most likely culprit is your firewall. Ensure that it is configured to accept communication on ports 25 (outgoing) and 143 (incoming) for IMAP or 110 (incoming) for POP3.Thanks but I can's seem to find anything on the firewall i can change...

is this any help:

"Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. POSSIBLE causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk', Server: 'smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk', PROTOCOL: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error: 10053, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F"

ThanksI just want to confirm that you are paying for this Yahoo! account, and it is not the free package?

FlameDoes your mail server require SMTP authentication?

What firewall are you using?

Bad move here. No chat software is worth that. Have you tried something else or just this ONE program?
I don't think you should use IRC when you disable your virus scanner in an attempt to GET it working.

Something tells me you haven't got any idea of what IRC can be used for.I've only tried mIRC, I was told it was the most reliable, and I don't know of any others.
And I'll try most anything to get it working.try another download of it>UNINSTALL the old one......

Solve : Issues with Media Player?

Answer»

Recently I have tried to use my media player. It says it is not installed properly. I tried downloading media player ten and installing it. After I install it, everytime it says the same thing...."Windowns Media Player is not peoperly installed on you computer. Would you like to DOWNLOAD it from the Microsoft website?"

Can someone help me!Which operating system are you using? Does your system meet the media player requirements?

FlameYeah, I am using WINDOWS XPI suggest uninstalling your faulty installation of Media Player if you can do that. Then, download [urlhttp://www.ccleaner.com]CCleaner and run it. Download that BASIC version unless you want to install Yahoo toolbar which is bundled with the standard version. Take some time to get familiar CCleaner's features before deleting stuff with it. Note that under Applications (under Cleaner Settings), you'll see Windows Media Player specifically mentioned under Multimedia. Be sure it's included, i.e. the box is checked, in your scan. Also, use the Issues button in CCleaner and Scan for Issues.

Disable your anit-virus program. Then, download Media Player again and install it again.I will look into the CCleaner. But I cant uninstall it from the add/remove programs...it's not listed there. Bit when I try to DELETE it from my HARD drive it wont let me. If I delete just part of it, what I delete will re appear after a secong or two.

Solve : Re: lost document in Word?

Answer»

WD98: Unable to Recover Lost Document
View products that this article applies to.
Article ID : 187351
Last Review : October 4, 2002
Revision : 1.0
This article was previously published under Q187351
SYMPTOMS
Word may be unable to automatically recover your document after Word shut down unexpectedly.
CAUSE
This problem may occur when any of the following conditions are true: • An AutoRecover file has not been created yet.

By default, an AutoRecover file will not be saved until ten minutes after you start WORK on it. After ten minutes, the AutoRecover file is created. If a failure shuts down Word prematurely, Word will use the AutoRecover file to recover the document. -or-

• An AutoRecover file is deleted after the document has been saved.

A new AutoRecover file is not created until after the next AutoRecover DURATION (by default: ten minutes after you start work on it). -or-

• The document was closed and changes were not saved.

Once a document has been closed, the AutoRecover file is deleted. There is no way to recover the document once the file has been closed and changes were not saved.

WORKAROUND
To change the AutoRecover Save duration, follow these STEPS: 1. On the Tools menu, CLICK Preferences, and then click the Save tab.
2. In the "Save AutoRecover Info Every" box, change the number to the desired time interval between AutoRecover saves, and click OK.
NOTE: AutoRecover is not a substitute for saving your document. When you use AutoRecover, Word creates a temporary file to recover your document if Word shuts down unexpectedly. You must still save your document in order to retain your changes.

Solve : premature restart?

Answer»

..problem..computer goes into restart mode when ever your try to play the sims game.

system windows 98, ram 256, cpu 750mhz, GRAPHIC ATI 100 vdm, the hard drive 60gb, cdrom and audio cards are all new. The drivers are all up to date. There is no heat issue or memory...system more than meets spec required for Sims game. The game install fine and it is the only game that will not run..CHECK EA site to see if anyone else had similar problems..negative...same with windows site for issue with win 98...nothing there..have run all sorts of diagnostics but have not been able to find and issue that with cause the premature restarts...the game start to load them the it goes into restart and scandisk starts indicating illegal shutdown...this is a tough one! Any ideas tksbluedog1245.... Well it sounds like there's nothing wrong with your pc ....... the issue is with the game or possibly you vid card or graphic setup .

dl65 I speak from experience here. Take a good look at your video card and make sure it's firmly seated. If there's wiggle room, that could be your problem.Test your ram.
Use either or both programs.
http://www.memtest.org/
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp
Have a floppy ready, download the file to your computer, double click & LET it install to the floppy, boot your computer to the floppy & let it rip. Good suggestion...however if it was effecting most or all of the software this could be the problem. However, since it is only effecting a COUPLE of games it has to be something in common with only those two and how they run...I was thinking that it could be because norton system works runs all the time monitoring the computer it could be the problem...will try turning it off and see if the programs run....another possiblility is to disable the autorestart mode in the config file....what do you think? I just want to confirm that your video card has 100 MB of RAM on it... Correct? Also, were you ever able to play this game? Direct X up to date? Windows Updates in check?

[glb]Flame[/glb]I think both your ideas are very good.
Do things one at a time, testing the game between changes.for what its worth....

my daughter uses Sims, and the pc ALWAYS crashes during the session AFTER shes used it.

No idea why!

TMake certain the drivers are properly installed.

What are the system temperatures at the time of the crash?

thanks for the replies, sorry have taken so long to go back to you all....The ATI rage card has 100 mb vram and there is no heat problem,,,,I have removed the game from the computer and have not reinstalled it yet...maybe this weekend...One thing that has occurred to me is that I have Norton system works running on the computer I am going to disable it and see if that could be the problem...it always run the back ground and could be causing the computer recycle the start..Thanks again if you have any more suggestion pls let me know. If you resolve it please let us know.System Works does indeed gobble up some resources...

"Directory Service"... Oh, you mean the yellow pages, right? And, you've got that in OE, right? I've used OE for years. That's a new one to me.
Tools=>Accounts=>ALL/MAIL/NEWS/DIRECTORY SERVICEOK. I've never really paid any attention to that part of OE and I have no clue what the items listed under Directory Service are for. I also have four in my OE. Maybe they're STANDARD ones loaded by default. I use OE for newsgroups as well as EMAIL; now that I think about it, I have LOOKED at Directory Service and wondered what it was but never investigated further.

Solve : Please Help, Microsoft Word?

Answer»

Well I'm working on a project and I need HELP CREATING a number show up at the bottom right of a LETTER. Ex: m=Y2-Y1/X2-X1 <--- I want the 2 and 1 to show up small and on the bottom right of the letter Y and X. Sry, I'm not really much of a "computer person". THANKS.
What it sounds like you are talking about is using Subscripts, which is simple.

Select the letter, words, number, or numbers you want to subscript and then go to Format > Font > and then check Subscript. (As you will see, there are other options as well in that window). Once you have what you want checked, just press OK.

Using the steps I just EXPLAINED and your example, this is what you should get:

m=Y2-Y1/X2-X1

Solve : Win Media Player and Codec?????

Answer»

How come certain video clip files when downloaded from a file sharing network will play on some machines and not on others.

Two Examples: A video (15MB) of a football clip that i WATCHED on a FRIEND's work PC, acted differently when i downloaded it, and requested a codec server, or something, and then received a MESSAGE that it could not CONTACT the codec server, etc. I could hear the sound but not get the video.

Example #2. Some video files from e-mule request a licence. When the file is downloaded and i open it, the Windows Media Player says it is acquiring license?
Then it comes BACK with an "unspecified error".
Anybody know what is going on with these files???
Media Player is big on digital rights management. This sounds like dangerous P2P stuff. Don't let the RIAA know about it. Have you googled for the necessary codecs?

You didn't mention your O/S so will need more info about your setup.

Solve : Adobe Premiere Export issue?

Answer»

I have use of Premiere both here at home, and at school. Here at home, I want to export my finished TIMELINES as WMVs to send via email for review. At school, I've been ABLE to save to WMV just fine in Premiere, but not here at home. I don't even see the option to export as WMV here. I know for a fact that the version of Premiere I'm using here is the same as that at the school and I've done all the updates I can. Both the system at school and my home system are running Windows XP and use Adobe Premiere 6.0 Any ideas? (Yes, I know I can IMPORT the AVIs into Movie Maker and then export to WMV. I have done that, but for some reason the files don't play. The audio goes fine, but the image is frozen. And yes, I have updated Media Player as well.) I only have SP1 at the moment. Stuck on a dial up connection for the time being and haven't had time to wait for SP2 to download. I'll probably order the CD or see if SOMEONE I know has it.

Solve : Word alphabetised complete document?

Answer»

I recently created a word document, following which my system crashed.
When I restarted my system the Word document now had all of the WORDS listed alphabetically instead of the structure in which I had TYPED it.
I was unable to use the 'edit' 'undo' option as the system had crashed and saved the document as was.

Does anyone know of any function that can CONVERT it back or if the system saves a back up anywhere. Quick save is enabled but I am UNSURE where else the document may be saved to.

Any IDEAS would be a great help.
Many thanks.

I take it you are TRYING to recover data from a cd onto your new system?
Does it read the disc ok?
Are you able to 'explore' the disc by going into My Computer, right clicking the drive and selecting explore?

You have to 'copy' the files from a disc you cannot 'move' them as they are on a fixed (cd) drive.

Solve : Outlook timeout with hotmail?

Answer»

Hey,
whenever i try to download an EMAIL from my hotmail a/c which has an attachment bigger than 2mb, outlook gives me a message saying cannot establish connection to SERVER and disconnects from hotmail. It works fine with all other emails.
Have tried this in outlook 2002 and 2003 and i get the same problem.
I have also tried this in outlook express and it downloads everything fine, so im thinking there is a setting i have missed somewhere
Can anybody help?
Thanks,

Gyro_66I didn't know hotmail supported POP access still? I would say that if Outlook is the only one doing this, then go to http://www.microsoft.com and click on Office Update. I'm sure there's an Outlook update in there for you that might help. If that doesn't work, you might consider reinstalling outlook.

Flamehey,
im not sure hotmail does support pop3, as when i created the account in outlook, it said it connects to the http server rather than the pop3 one, still though, i have tried downloading from this account on 2 computers and both give the same error, and i have tried re-installing outlook as well.
I really dont see why it is having this problem, considering outlook express works perfectly fine when downloading from this accountDid you buy a subscription for the Outlook Express Hotmail?
You might need to do that first.
If your account is over two years old, you may be able to access it through Outlook. This is because Hotmail did not stop giving access to those who had accounts for a long time, people who most likely did not send spam.nope, NEVER paid for anything on hotmail, have been on it years and am still using the free a/cFrom what I understand, you have to pay to get POP access. Not sure why it favors OE and not Outlook though...

Flameim not looking for pop3 access, when i SETUP a hotmail account in outlook, it lets u choose to set up a http hotmail account, so no pop3I'm not sure it matters. For example, Yahoo! will only let you access your mail from a web-based system, and not from an E-Mail client. The only way to BYPASS that is to pay. I have never tried this with Hotmail however, so I can't say for sure...

FlameIt's more than a year Hotmail ceased free pop access. I mean you can't use Email client anymore. But have no idea about older users. Some say hotmail still let them to use email client. I have tried it a year before and it notifed that, Hotmail no longer allows free pop/http access.

Well this is the problem I am having. I click on windows media player and it comes up on the taskbar, but thats all I can see. I can hear the audio but cant see the video or the windows media player window. I can see it minimize and maximize when i hit button on the taskbar but I can see it maximize to the right of the screen. I just need help I did not touch anything and it was WORKING in the MORNING then it started doing what I said a couple hours later. I tried doing a system restore maybe thinking that WOULD help and i also tried redownloading it just to have it do it again. I am completely computer illiterate so any dumbing down would be greatly appreciated. Starnge... It appears on the taskbar but yet you can't restore it... This just started? Any changes to any part of the system at all recently?

FlameI haven't done anything new havent added anything or nothin. But yeah it's on the taskbar and when you restore it.....you know the TOP top bar on the internet window where you have the minimize maximize and the red close button. You know when you restore a window that panel goes up same as when you minimize the panel goes back down in the tab in the taskbar well it opens up and you can see the top bar like its opening but it goes up and right off the screen. Thats the best WAY i can explain it. I havent downloaded anything new I havent uninstalled anything....im just at a loss. Just sucks i cant use media player anymore

Solve : Can't reinstall program?

Answer»

Hi

I have a game called 'SINGLES' and I had it on my computer but I uninstalled it, but it still appears in 'Add or Remove programs' but I can't find any files on the computer to do with it. Now I want to play the game again so I tried to reinstall it from the CD but the 'InstallShield Wizard' only comes up with 3 options. They are 'modify', 'repair' and 'remove'. I have tried all of them in different orders and none of them result in the game being back on my computer.

I think it might have something to do with it still being in 'Add or Remove Programs' but only because I don't think that should happen but it might be a coincidence. I have tried looking up how to get things out of add/remove programs but they say to modify the registry, and even with information on how to back it up I don't feel comfortable doing that because I don't want to wreck the whole computer.

I am using Windows XP. I wasn't sure if this QUESTION should go here or in the games section, but I put it here because I don't think the problem is because it is a game.

thankyou

ShannonEnsure that all traces of any related files are removed, download, install and run CCleaner. Select the "Issues" section and hit "Scan For Issues". Ensure that you save backups and repeat the process until no further entries appear.

If the Add/Remove Programs applet entry still remains and/or the game still refuses to install, please post back.I have gotten rid of all the files to do with the program, and run the ccleaner the way that you said to and the game still appears in the add/remove programs section. if i run the ccleaner untill there are no more issues, then go to add remove programs and do uninstall, then go back to ccleaner then 3 issues appear to do with it not being able to find the files for the singles game. i think there must be something somewhere to do with it though because in the add/remove programs section it says that the game takes up 3.68 mb. I still can't install the game.
Nothing has changed.
Thanks for trying though.
Have you tried going to START=>All Programs=>Singles=>Uninstall?

Also, have you tried using the uninstall option in CCleaner?I went to the uninstaller through the start menu when I first uninstalled the game. the game ins't there anymore, but somehow the uninstaller is, but not in the start menu, only in the 'add/remove programs'. I tried to do uninstall in the ccleaner and it runs the uninstaller just the same way that the 'add/remove programs' does. the game is still gone, but it still shows up in the list on 'add/remove programs' and on the list in the uninstall section of ccleaner. they must still think the game is there but it definately isn't.there is an option in the ccleaner to delete the entry but it says that that wont uninstall the program. I dont know if i should do this or not, because I don't know if it will just stop it from showing up on the list, and I still might not be able to reinstall the game. do you thinkI should delete it?I tried deleting it and it worked. I can install the game now.
Thankyou both for helping

That's an odd question. Surely the answer is that they don't include a backup of the software; they provide installation disks? I confess I'm not sure what is meant by the question, but since it's only a 200-word paper, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Google for "software licensing" and you might hit gold. Costs.....

Though that's alot less than 200 words so you might have to embellish a little bit...

Solve : no monitor?

Answer»

I have recently installed WINDOWS XP on my Gateway and found I needed drivers for my monitor. I downloaded what I thought was the correct driver and installed it. Now I have nothing the computer boots up as normal but then nothing just a black screen. I cannot even see the mouse. What model NUMBERS are involved? MONITORS usually do not have drivers as such. Very exquisite ones have .inf FILES for some of their gadgetry.

Are you sure the video card is firmly seated? Remove it and reinsert, then turn it back on.Try booting into SafeMode...once there go to Control Panel and un-install the monitor drivers you installed.

Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager...right clik the monitor listed and SELECT remove.

On re-boot WinXP will use generic drivers to run that monitor until you can find and install the correct ones...

Solve : XP does not let me boot from CD?

Answer»

I'd tell you about my computer, but I forgot specs and I can't exactly look them up if I can't get into my computer.

It's a Dell PC that's a several years old. 2 Hard Drives, one 115GB the other 60. Both over a year old

Anyway, I was reinstalling XP, and at first, when it asked me to press F12 to boot, I would, and it ignored this and continued on to the login screen.

After this, I tried installing striaight from the CD while logged in. This worked, but did not let me format my C drive so that I could repartition it.

So, I switched my two Hard Drives (actually, just the CABLE) and this time, it would act as though I had a blank Hard Drive, and setup all these files before asking me if I wanted to install XP. I would (and it recognized only the main drive no matter how many times a switched it) and then it wold restart and it would do the exact same thing, as though I hadn't installed XP. The only indication that it had, was that it would ask me if I wanted to install over another system.

Anyway, after some fiddling, it finally stopped doing this, and now, when I start up my system, it tell me that:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll. Please re-install a copy of the above file.

The problem is that it still does not let me boot from anything. It just ignores me pressing F12 (and F2 for setup) and gives me this error message. I'm guessing that if I could just boot from the CD and reinstall XP, my problems would be almost over.

Anyone got any suggestions?
Ok , First when your computer Boots and and ASKS you to push a button

Hit F2 , go into the Bios, and Find the Boot order Page, make sure Cd ROM is a The Top of the List, as in First Boot Device

Then Try Booting again, it should Read the Cd and Say Press Any Key to Boot from CD

Also is it A Real XP Cd or a Dell XP cd?
or is it a Recovery CD?
Sorry, I'll elaborate.

At first, before I reinstalled XP, I would hit F12, and it would give me a list of possible things to boot from. I would select boot from CD, and then when it said "Hit any key to boot from CD" I would hit Enter, and it would take me to the login sceen (it did not boot from CD).

Now, it does not take me to the boot screen, nor does it take me to the setup screen. It pretty much ignores the command, and I'm fairly certain that the problem does not lie in my keyboard.

Edit: It is a real XP CD, with real product key and everything.Oh. My. Goodness. I have not been this computer embarassed in a while.

My keyboard. Was not PLUGGED in.

:-/

I hope that the install works now.

Edit: Sigh, nope. I'm having the exact same problem a I did before. F12, boot screen, select CD, and it ignores this and takes me to the error I mentioned before. So I assume that it is just not booting from the CD for some reason.Has you CD Become Damaged?

You could try Booting off something else an Loading up Dos, then Running winnt from then CD to start the install the Old fashioned way

http://www.bootdisk.com/I strongly recommend using Smart Boot Manager. If you can boot from a floppy, you can boot from pretty much anything. Find a link in the software FAQ (see my signature).I doubt that the problem lies in the CD, as I JUST got it, and the CD installed correctly every time it asked me to.

As for Smart BootManager, I'm probably wrong, but I don't see how I can use it if I can not get into windows. Am I supposed to burn the program to a CD from another computer? (I am currently on my laptop)Quote

Am I supposed to burn the program to a CD from another computer? (I am currently on my laptop)
Yes, although it installs on a floppy disk, not a CD (see above).I see.

Is there any other way, as I am only on my laptop? (Which is sans floppy drive)Yes. Enlist the help of a friend with a working PC with a floppy drive!Hahaha, that' exactly what I did earlier. I had a little snafu with the floppy, and hopefully by tonight it'll be right as rain.

Thanks a ton.Our pleasure.

Solve : Toshiba hard drive utility?

Answer»

Hello, everyone!

I have an HP Pavilion ze4210, (about 5 years old) running Windows XP Home and unable to BOOT. When powered on, it gets to the Windows XP boot screen and then restarts...everytime. It won't boot into Safe Mode or Last Known GOOD Configuration.

I have no Recovery CDs and really don't feel like paying HP $87 for them.

It has a 20GB Toshiba hard drive with no floppy drive.

I've been RACKING my BRAIN trying to find a free Toshiba Hard Drive Utility CD image in order to do some diagnostics.

Any recommendations?

Solve : Gateway Restoration Kit Problems?

Answer»

Hello,

First off, I should make it known I e-mailed Gateway Tech Support; however, they were not helpful at all. And I'm not wanting to pay 1.95 a minute to call them.

I have a Gateway 500GR, 3.2Ghz HT with 1GB of RAM, and a 200GB HDD. I decided I wanted to rid the computer of the programs that had been put on it buy the store I purchased it from (It was the DEMO model I bought), so I decided to perform a full restore of the computer. I have three CDs, a Drivers CD, an Applications CD, and an OS CD. The restore starts with the Drivers CD - this CD allows me to format and fdisk the harddrive. Then I insert the OS CD to begin INSTALLING Windows XP. Now here is where the problems begin. Once the OS is installed, it will ask for the Drivers CD - load some drivers, then the Applications CD - load some applications. However, when I insert the Drivers CD (Or the Applications CD for that matter), all I get is a 'Gateway Restoration Kit' image on screen, and a small box opening and closing to the right of the text. Nothing else. The computer is not frozen, and I can enter the Task Manager and end the process. What's more... is without the drivers from that CD - I can't seem to connect to the internet.

When I go into the Device Manager, and look under 'Other Devices' I have the following with question marks (Apparently without drivers): ETHERNET Controller, PCI Device, PCI Simple COMMUNICATIONS Controller, SM Bus Controller, Universal Serial Bus Controller, and Video Controller.

So... I can't even seem to connect to the internet to download these drivers, and have no idea which ONES they are off the Driver CD.Chad S. Thain......What about going back to the store you bought it from......They should be able to assist you I would think. In hindsite , you would have been better off removing the programs using the add/remove function . I will never understand why these companies use that multidisk crap......It saves them a few dollars in license fees......but creates a nightmare for the buyers.
Perhaps one of our members who uses this system can offer you some assistance.

Good luck ....

you could try this >http://www.ontrack.com/freesoftware/?pageTarget=Software&buttonName=Free+Software or even this>http://www.theabsolute.net/sware/dskinv.html or check the camera...it may have stored them in the memchip...Just wanted to provide an update... It seems that the link that Merlin_2 provided is pretty *censored* good.. I downloaded the trial version of ontrack.com's easy recovery professional and it analyzed my hd and can recover about 85 - 95% of all my lost pics and data... kudos to Merlin.. The free download will analyze then show you what is recoverable and then in order to extract the info, you have to purchase the software which is good for use on 20 hard drives (anyone interested in splitting the cost?) Cost: $500, a lot cheaper than sending in the hd which can RUN fm $600 - $2200... Thanks again and if anyone is seriously interested in sharing the cost, let me know.. Boob you did have to purchase the software bob...is was a suggestion...that stuff like that is out there if you are in dire straits...and the link was for you not to be out of pocket...and just goes to prove that if you format a harddrive... all is not deleted...

Solve : Mozilla Firefox content blocker?

Answer»

Are there any extensions avaible that can block whatever content I'd like it to block?I believe it already has some functionality built in. You can specify which SITES to allow images, which sites to accept cookies from and which pages you want to accept pop-ups.

I haven't been to the extensions page in a while (and I'm too busy to check now) but I never saw much in the way of content blockers. To be honest, I reckon you'll need to find a seperate program to do this job. TRY www.download.comQuote

Firefox blocks each pop-up.

I was hoping I would not have to download ADDITIONAL software, Firefox its plugins are out of sight.I realise it's hardly perfect. But like firewalls and AV Apps, this sort of thing is generally done better by external applications.

I think the only way forward is to maybe find a "suggestion box" type thing so you could put the idea forward to the developers.

Of course, even if it got implemented you'd still need to wait for the future version... Say.. You're a programmer, aren't you...? I thought you may like to try this>http://beatthecheaters.com/cookieselector.htmlI have an extension like that, it shows me what kind of cookie I am looking at, I use Firefox to block cookies, never IE.

Well, I do know quite a bit of PHP, Python and... erm... BASIC...

Actually I did try to find out some INFORMATION on how to code extensions for Mozilla. For the most part we're talking XML, which isn't really too bad a language, at least in the grand SCHEME of things (Hah! Geddit! SCHEME! Hah hah hah... Erm, I'll get my coat...)Quote

I thought of that, however, I would have to browse each website with content I wish not to view and then put a lot of time in disabling each image.

You are making things overly complicated. No need to browse to all those sites. Simply block them as they come up in your normal browsing.

I only accept cookies from websites I want to accept cookies from, (Almost none), however, this does stop not the page from displaying.

The best solution here is make all cookies session only. When you close the browser, all cookies are automatically deleted.

Firefox blocks each pop-up.

Works perfectly - as designed.

I was hoping I would not have to download additional software, Firefox its plugins are out of sight.

Or they never bother to learn.

If someone has heard of a (DECENT) content blocker, do let me know.

It's not security wise, but more morale wise-related.Slightly off topic here.

Noticing your sig Merlin. Can I just point out that finding bugs in a Windows/Microsoft Beta is a bit like finding seagulls at a council rubbish tip: neither difficult nor surprising.

Solve : Removing Norton?

Answer»

I think you are good to go. You have done your homework.

The way Norton products (and many others) are and Microsoft's O/S you may never get EVERYTHING out without a format and reinstall, but you have no active issues.By looking in the registry, how do you determine what is "active"?

pkUse Task Manager (Ctl+Alt+Del) to see what processes are running. That is the easiest way to check.Well, Avast seems to have installed without any problems. It has been running for a while through a couple of restarts and an update, and no problems thus far. I think I have succesfully LIBERATED this PC from the clutches of Norton.

Now I just need to decide whether to equip my friend with a third party firewall (Sunbelt Kerio) or just use XP Firewall. Anything too complex would confuse her, I am afraid. The same is true for Windows Defender.

Thanks for the help.

PKThanks for posting back. Good luck. After uninstalling 2006 on my 12th computer, I've realized Norton, while once good, sux now.

Go with AVG-Free it's better anyways

As for Avast....I think they're pretty good. I use Mcafee, not my favorite but I also never had complaints. My favorite is KASPERSKY, in AV tests (where people purposely throw viruses at their computers and have AV's remove them) Kaspersky scored 1st or within the top 3. However, the reason it doesn't score well overall is because it's a little slower and very non-user friendly.

But that's just me.

I used to use McAfee, until a little over a year ago when I had the most difficult time getting decent support for an issue. I got so mad at them for not reading e-mails carefully. It even went as far as a supervisor, but I still did not get resolution. I wasn't asking for much, just answers to my questions.

At that point I decided that it was stupid to pay $30-40 per year for something and not get support. What else was I paying for? Just virus definitions?? That is when I discovered Avast.

My friend ran into a similar problem with Norton. She was having LiveUpdate problems. They helped her for about 4 e-mails, then realized that she was using NIS 2003, which is no longer supported, so they cut her off. Even though she was past the time to get a refund (she had just renewed a couple of months ago) she still wanted me to get rid of it and go with Avast also.

I used to be a die hard PC-Cillin fan (back from around 1998-2002). That was a darn good product, then they went and got all too big for their britches too.

That really doesn't sound too unreasonable for any paid software, although I wouldn't use their current offering for free! I agree to a point I guess. Maybe I am just biased cuz I hate Norton.

PKThey used to make a good product (pre-2003). I just can't BELIEVE how it has deteriorated, but that seems to happen to all products that SYmantec has acquired.

Some people swear by it. So, whatever floats your boat. Just as a follow up note: I was visiting the friend whose computer I liberated from Norton (with your help) today and after a few days' use (she had been on VACATION), she said she now feels "free." She has noticed an improvement in performance and enjoys the low profile, yet trustable protection of Avast. She said that Norton prevented her from doing many things with all of its warnings and "protection."

Thanks again.

PKThanks for posting back. This tool has been working fine for me.
