Solve : Multiple DocRoots with Apache??

Answer»

Situation:
I installed Apache-no-sll 2.054 with PHP 5.04 manually.

Problem:
My .php files are not parsed in any other place than http://localhost/ in my browsers (Opera 7.5 and IExlorer).
For example my test.php only runs in http://localhost/test.php
I want my .php files to run at any location.

What I tried:
http://us3.php.net/manual/en/install.windows.manual.php
Both Apache and "Manual Installation Steps" I read carefully and executed the steps.
I've searched and discussed, even modified the DocRoot directives in both php.ini and httpd.conf..no luck.
What works: command line PHP. The exe is called when typing "php path/phpfile.php",
and thus I also found in the registry that php.exe is called when running .php files.
However, I don't want command line, I want it through browser.

Information:
Here is my httpd.conf:
http://pastebin.com/635907
My Apache error log:
http://pastebin.com/636612
My php.ini:
http://pastebin.com/636617
System:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] with SP2. AMD Athlon XP 2400+. 1 GB DDR RAM.
C:\Windows, D: and F: for data. PHP version: 5.04 | Apache version: 2.054 (no ssl).
Apache dir: D:\APPZ\Apache2054\Apache2
PHP dir: D:\APPZ\PHP504

My question is:
What must I do for my .php files to be able to be parsed and interpreted correctly
by the browser, regardless of the directory where the .php file is (other than the location http://localhost)?

Many thanks for your attention and patience.

Treval
The link to your httpd.conf file is showing an empty file unfortunately. PLEASE try that again. It may be that's where the error lies.

In the meantime, I see some other PHP errors in the Apache log:

Code: [SELECT][client 127.0.0.1] script 'D:/APPZ/Apache2054/Apache2/htdocs/insert.php' not found or unable to stat, referer: http://localhost/guestbook.phpThe 'insert.php' file could not be found. Are you trying to link to an absolute file path? (D:/... rather than just /insert.php)

Code: [Select][client 127.0.0.1] PHP Notice: Undefined index: Username in D:\\APPZ\\Apache2054\\Apache2\\htdocs\\loginregister\\index1.php on line 2These and several similar errors mean that you are attempt to access an array variable that has not yet been set.

Code: [Select][client 127.0.0.1] PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysql_connect() in D:\\APPZ\\Apache2054\\Apache2\\htdocs\\loginregister\\index1.php on line 7In your php.ini (in the C:\Windows folder) uncomment the line ';extension=php_mysql.dll'. Locate the php_mysql.dll file in your PHP installation folder and copy it to C:\Windows\system32 (or C:\Windows\system for Win9x). Ensure the MySQL server is running. Restart Apache. My httpd.conf:
http://www.valter.be/txt/httpd.conf
My PHP.ini:
http://www.valter.be/txt/php.ini

These 3 errors were because of a test script I was running (a guestbook with files outside the docroot (in a lower folder loginregister\, and the path defined in guestbook.php is RELATIVE). It doesn't really point out any errors that could trace back to my problem (I don't have mysql server neither).

I just want to change to DocRoot of my CURRENT and only localhost (localhost://) to D:\ or something. I want any .php file being handled by the browser anywhere (any dir). I heard this was done by creating a new VirtualHost, but since I can define a docroot for it, I want to define my current localhost DocRoot. Nor did AddHandler nor AddType work.

Regards,
Treval

Please create a folder under your webroot, put a php file into it and try to access it. Please post details of any error message you see or that appears in Apache's error log. For php purposes, your httpd.conf appears to be correct, although you may wish to add a line:
DirectoryIndex index.php
so that index.php can be a default home page in any folder.

For security reasons, you DO NOT want to change the document root to D:\. Neither do you need a VirtualHost for this purpose.Behold my giant error log (due to a looping series of the same error):
http://www.valter.be/txt/error.log

Can I delete the redundant lines of the OS 10038 error lines safely?
It lags my harddisk and isn't really necessary in my opinion.

Accessing test.php from within my newly created folder under the document root worked (happy ),
but putting index.php in another folder than the docroot scope(any other dir outside) does not work.
I just get plain text in the browser.
So it's true that Apache only calls up the PHP interpreter inside the docroot?

You can safely delete the entire log any time you wish.

Good. That is as expected then,

BING! A light bulb has just gone on in my head. Are you (for example) putting the PHP file in D:\ and then pointing your browser at D:\? If so, Apache is not involved in that transaction at all. Your browser retrieves it directly. Only a client-server query on port 80 will cause Apache to parse PHP files: this is what happens when you point your browser at 127.0.0.1. Otherwise the browser ignores the normal web server protocol and retrieves the file from the filesystem, not from the web server.

Does that make sense? If you see "file://" in your browser's address bar, you know the page has been retrieved via the filesystem. If you see "http://" the file has been retrieve via the HyperText Transfer Protocol (i.e. the web).Hey Rob !

Problem solved. Finally. It took ages.
Thank you immensely for your coopeartion and patience.

Er... RIGHT. That doesn't seem to bear much relationship to your original question, but I'm glad you have it set up the way you want it now.

Solve : Excel overwrites vital data?

Answer»

I track my self-employed hours of work and details of meeting on an Excel file. Each WEEK I create a separate tab. Today I copied and renamed a tab for this week's work and BEGAN editing it.

To my horror, the edits I made on this week's tab were replicated on all (40+) tabs. It looks like all that data is LOST.

Is there a WAY to recover my old information?

ThanksIf no backup file, all data is gone.

Solve : uninstall windows xp question?

Answer»

Ok, so I have 2 installations of windows xp on the same partition. The reason is not very important and was basically just a result of me being dumb. Is there a way to uninstall one of them without affecting the other? Thanks.

BTW just in case its needed for some odd reason, i use dual 2.4 xeons on an asus pc-dl deluxe motherboard with 1 gig of ram. an 80 gig hd and obviously my os is windows xp. anything i FORGOT, just say so.Quote

Is there a way to uninstall one of them without affecting the other?
Very very unlikely. I'm AFRAID you probably need to start again from scratch. Backup data, reformat, reinstall.
You may be able toget by editing the boot.ini file and then deleting the unneeded installation.Removing just one is likely to leave some untidy conflicts under C:\Program Files...No doubt. I always prefer a fresh install over a FUBAR setup personally.no QUESTION about it BU, FFR, you could go through and make it work by cleaning up the extra installation but I would nip it in the bud and get it right before you get too much going on. Dont want a fouled REGISTRY and orphaned programs.

Back Up Fdisk Format Reinstallok thanks all. yeah, i'm just gonna reformat. umm one more question then. i want to save all my old EMAILS from outlook express, what files do i keep and where do i put them after i reformat so that i'll have all my emails? You need to backup both your e-mail and your address book.

Solve : Outlook: Sorting Contacts list by language??

Answer» HI everybody,

At my suggestion, my office manager is now using Outlook XP to manage his schedule (much better than the Post-It notes that used to COVER his entire WALL!).

He'd also like to use Outlook's email feature instead of Outlook Express. There's one small glitch, though:

He speaks Chinese, so his Contacts list (ADDRESS book) has some entries in Chinese characters as well as those in English. Outlook Express alphabetized his Contacts list so the English entries appeared first, then all the Chinese entries:

[A-Z] <--English entries
[xxx] <--Chinese entries

But for some reason, Outlook mixes them up:

[several English entries]
[a Chinese ENTRY]
[several English entries]
[a Chinese entry] ... etc.

Does anyone know why Outlook does this, and if it can be changed? (I'm reasonably computer-literate, but I haven't been able to find an option like that.)

If you don't know, do you have any idea where else I could ask this question? Thanks!

Solve : Backup software?

Answer»

Hey guys, ive had alot of game disks, albums, and dvds either lost or been mis treated. So i was wondering what is the best backup software. I know this is a touchy subjet becusae of piracy but i genuinly just want to back some things up, if its also risks CH getting into trouble then feel free to deleate this post. But however my FRIEND has something called Alchol 120% whch i tried but for some reason i dont like the idea of a virtual drive. Is there any risk in a virtual drive and/or is there another program that doesnt need a virtual drive.

Also maybe for the website we could have a general chat area where people can post random things? Like videos or puzzles or jsut things to KEEP people occupiedI would just buy Norton Ghost and burn everything to an external hard disk. No CDs, and it's easier to use. Less transferring time too!

FlameHey guys thanks for replys. ILL look into ghost as well, you never know

Thanks for PM backdated, appreciatedRight, ok yea that SOUNDS good, ill give them a try. Thanks mate.

C}{r1$Acronis True Image is excellent for making backup.
I use the incremental backup and keep my full backups on DVD. It is the fastest, easiest, most flexible. It has good-looking windows wizard that makes utilization very convenient. just as easy as backup from Windows.
Highly recommend!

Solve : Autocad 14 - Open Office OLE Objects?

Answer»

Hello.
I have a problem. I am trying to use Open Office Objects (Calc spreadsheets) in Autocad 14. I insert an OLE object, a calc table. FIRST time when I open it, it works without a glitch, I can edit the cells, I can add data, you name it.
But, after I save the OLE document and I close it... I try to open it again, with double click on it (in Autocad). I receive error messages: "Failed to CONNECT. Link may be broken." or "Failed to launch server application". And after that, nobody will open that OLE object again. I receive all the time "Failed to connect".
We are trying to CHANGE the Microsoft Office SUITE with Open Office.
Do you have any idea?Which version of OpenOffice.org are you USING?Open Office 1.4 and Open Office 2.0 (french version for 2.0)I stongly recommend removing both and installing just version 2.0.2 (adding in the French language pack).

Solve : Problem after PC Cleanup...?

Answer»

Yesterday I downloaded several programs to my laptop to improve sluggish performance. Unfortunately I didn't keep a log of everything I did. Stupid I know. These are the utilities I ran, as best as I can reconstruct...

Absolute StartUp
AboutBuster
NoAdware
SpywareBlaster

I also defragmented my disc.

My performance increased notably. But now I can't load my ebay homepage. I can log into ebay and do searches. But if I try to access My Summary, I get an error saying the PAGE cannot be displayed. I haven't noticed trouble on any other sites. And I'm able to load the Summary page from my desktop pc.

Any CLUES?
Well sorry I didn't follow your instructions to the letter. But you were only one of several responders to my earlier post, and I DECIDED to take a little from each. Next time I'll ignore everybody else and take only your advice.

If anyone has anything constructive to add to this thread your input is very welcome, thanks.

I don't recall NoAdware ever being recommended on this board (or any other, for that matter),Unfortunately the OP's other thread was hijacked by the Mac menace. That can't have helped in this case.

Constructive comments? Be very suspicious of free downloads, especially ones that tell you how MUCH danger your system is in, and how much BETTER it will be after you use it. Always use reliable sources of software, and fully up to date virus checkers. Run those against ANYTHING you download.

Another constructive comment: the people who try to help here are all volunteers and understandably don't appreciate sarcasm from the people they are trying to help. Thanks everyone for their advice. It seems I found NoAdware on TuCows. I was under the impression that their stuff was reliable. Anyway I resolved problem by reactivating all the startup programs I'd disabled with AbsoluteStartup. Everythings running fine and I've removed the other programs I got from TuCows.

I'll go back and follow the previous instructions to the letter, thanks.

Solve : Photoshop CS2?

Answer»

When I try to follow a tutorial in PHOTOSHOP CS2: many of these small tutorial's begin with these instuctions:

Open up a new image, size doesn't matter, neither does the background (transparent, white, etc.)
Now set your colors to default by pressing D, then go to Render > Clouds. Once you're done go to Filter > Sketch > CHROME and use the default settings: Detail 4, SMOOTHNESS 7.
Now we need to add some color, go to Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation and use the settings shown below:

I am unable to go to Render > Clouds it is greyed out, Why am I not able to follow this beginning?

JohnWell, I'm using Photoshop v.7 and I'm not having any issues... When did this start? Has this effect ever WORKED? Have you tried reinstalling CS2?

FlameIt's not long been INSTALLED, Render > Clouds works fine most of the time but it's when it's a blank either white or transparent when it wont work.

Solve : Power Point Outline Pane view?

Answer»

My QUESTION may SEEM really simple to some, but definitely is a problem for me.

I see other presentations that, in the outline pane (to the left of the main design window), have a tab that allows the user to see a miniature of each SLIDE. (In addition to a tab that allows the default setting of the pane).

I cannot figure out how to make PowerPoint show that second option in the Outline pane. I cannot find anything about it in the help menus nor can I find anything in the menu system that looks LIKE it is appropriate.

Can you help?

Thank you,

Solve : Any XXCopy Users??

Answer»

Win98se. General query - no problems.

Has anyone using XXCopy /Clone managed to clone their system disk and make it bootable with Fdisk :-? If so have any major problems been experienced :-?

Thanks..Can I ask why you want to use this software? There are other, more reliable solutions for backup.Backdated - Because it's there and I want to find out its capabilities.

GX1_Man - Sounds like you have used XXCopy and other backup systems, how else would you KNOW that others are more reliable than XXCopy. Would you care to comment on the less reliable facets of XXCopy please :-?

I will probably never use XXCopy for backup but I sure do want to know what the prog is capable of just for the fun of finding out.

Thanks for your responses.Quote

For the "fun of finding out" use google.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=xxcopy

I use Acronis True Image for backups and imaging. I am assuming this is what you are referring to rather than the file management utility called xxcopy. Thanks for that GX1. I had already downloaded XXCopy & printed the 30-odd sets of information one of which appears to show that a system disk can be cloned using XXCopy then ACTIVATED using Fdisk to write the MBR.

I am only INVOLVED with this for my "hedification" and will be looking at Acronis as well. If I LOST absolutely everything on my hdd it would be fun re-building using my current backup which is all on cd. However I will be using XXCopy to clone my current hdd to a slave hdd then trying to activate it. As I said "Just for the fun of it".

Thanks again.

I will appreciate COMMENTS by anyone else with experience of XXCopy.

Solve : Yes, me too Outlook help?

Answer»

Yes, it has happened to everyone it seems, outlook is being stupid But really heres my question: I had been using outlook for awhile, ok since June and I configured it to check both my msn account and my verizon account. Two weeks ago my verizon quit working, it wasn't able to SEND or recieve mail. So I did all the "normal" checks, MADE sure I was connected to the net, password was correct and everything, all to no avail. Now my msn account isn't working. And I just reinstalled outlook and it didn't fix any of the problems. If anyone has any suggestions for me that WOULD be great! As of right now I cannot check any of my mail through outlook and it's annoying... so HOPEFULLY thanks in advance!

~Danielle~ When did this start? Did you make any changes to the system before this happened? Any changes to your account? Are you the administrator of this computer? Do you have a firewall? Have you scanned for viruses and Spyware? Have you been keepin gup with Microsoft Windows (in this case ALSO office) updates?

Solve : CPU Spiking and intermittent computer lock-up?

Answer»

Hi all!

I’m hoping that someone can give me some advice with my problem.
First off, let me give you the rundown on my configuration. I am running a:

PIII 866 MHz w/256k L2 cache
512MB Ram
1761MB Windows Memory
Gigabyte Mainboard – Socket 370
NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro
(Dual Boot System)
Windows XP Pro SP1 on main drive NTFS - 20GB Maxtor Drive
Windows 98 2nd Edition on other drive FAT 32 - 20GB Western Digital
Hardware Firewall (Router)
Software Firewall – (EZ Firewall – basically Zonelabs ZoneAlarm)
EZ Anti-virus
ETrust Pest Patrol for Spyware
Various other protection programs
Connected through a Broadband Cable connection

OK, I’ll try and keep this rather complicated problem as short as possible. About two to three weeks ago I downloaded 2 or 3 trial software programs. I uninstalled them each within the same day. Each time I uninstalled one; I ran my TuneUp Utilities 2006 program to clean my registry of any leftover uninstalled files.

Then about 3 DAYS ago I NOTICED a rather strange occurrence taking place. My machine boots fine, but after it is up and running, it begins to continuously repeat a system check. Every minute or so the entire computer locks up, and during this lock up, the system checks the CDROM drive and the floppy drive. This check usually lasts about 10 seconds or so. Once it finishes checking them, everything returns to normal. It’s important to mention that at this same time, the CPU spikes to 100% for the duration of the check.

I checked my processes and found out that the file that is causing the spike is vsmon.exe. This file is part of EZ Firewall (ZoneAlarm). My take on this issue is this: since this all started to occur right after I installed/uninstalled software and then cleaned my registry, I am thinking that maybe I mistakenly deleted a “shared file” that the system is now searching for. If this is the case, I have a backup for every registry cleaning I made and can easily change it back to the way it was.

My question is this: Number (1) - I have since installed a new program that I downloaded and purchased online. (2) – I am afraid that if I put the registry back the way it was previously, that I might make the whole system unstable and cause an even bigger problem! By the way, I ran a complete virus check on all of the drives as well as a Spyware check. I also visited “ShieldsUp” and tested my firewall. Everything comes up clean and my machine is totally Stealth!

Does anyone know what might be causing this? I appreciate anything you can tell me!

Thanks in advance,
OldmanDidn't the program you bought come with information for re-registering it in the event of a reinstallation? If not, contact the vendors.

It may indeed be a registry error induced by TuneUp Utilities. I wish people would leave these programs well alone!

It may be an infection or parasite of some sort so carry out the procedures LISTED [highlight]in this post[/highlight] and post a Hijackthis logfile here when done.
If possible, zip the logfile and attach it rather than post it.Hi Backdated,

Thank you for responding. I appreciate your advice within the link that you provided. But, as I specified earlier, I have already SCANNED my entire system and found nothing at all. In addition, some of those programs I would never use on my machine. For example, I used to have Spybot Search & Destroy on my machine (back when it was a good program). It has since become very unstable and not very reliable. Therefore, I uninstalled it over two years ago.

I am a professional developer and only have necessary programs installed. I am very conscious of all of the garbage that is out there and have several layers of protection in place. I also have all of the latest Windows updates installed. It is highly unlikely that I have an infection or parasite.

Since I posted this thread, I have done a lot of additional research around the web. What I have been hearing on other forums is that EZ Firewall, using its file (vsmon.exe) is checking for updates on a regular basis. Well, I’ve always had it setup to do that, but for some reason it is doing it constantly. My research has pointed me in that direction for the time being.

In an answer to your initial question: yes, I can re-download and reinstall the program that I purchased if necessary. I would like to avoid that though if possible. In terms of my use of TuneUp Utilities 2006: The Windows (uninstall) program or even the one’s that come with the software itself rarely deletes all of the files associated with it. If left in the registry, over time your computer will slow down to a crawl and you will probably need to reinstall the OS. I often install different programs that I need for my work and then uninstall them to keep my machine as lean as possible. I don’t want to do a complete reinstall every couple of months.

Do you happen to know anything about EZ Firewall, vsmon.exe, or any other firewall that behaves in this same fashion?

Thanks again! A professional developer using F**kUp Utilities?? Tsk!

I've seen these well protected machines before btw. A user who depends on ZA, EzTrust and TuneUp does not inspire confidence!Well... based on your intelligent response, I guess you do not know the answer to my question. If you want to talk about, let's just say... old, washed up utilities... let's keep talking about the likes of AdAware & Spybot S&D! [smiley=grin.gif]

Forgive me for making the mistake of visiting this forum. I was under the initial impression that I would be conversing with intelligent individuals who would present themselves as professionals in their field.

Guess not!

Pardon me for saying... I THINK you may just need an attitude adjustment.

Good day! [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif]

There is a set method of troubleshooting and I have to use that as I don't have a crystal ball.

I really do hope I don't ever encounter any of your professional developments!

In the words of our Annie:
You are the weakest link.... Goodbye!Oldman he was only having a joke, calm down!

Solve : Outlook Contact Address Book?

Answer»

This is my first time so be patient

How secure is Outlook CONTACTS?

I have heard if you receive an email in Outlook with an attachment and even though you may have very good anti virus software, the virus could infect the whole of your contacts list.

Has this ever happened to anyone?
This has happened to many. Many viruses are designed to replicate themselves by e-mailing themselves to all the addresses in your contact list. These viruses come in the form of attachments, often from someone you know who has been infected.

The good news is that these viruses can't CAUSE any harm unless they are opened. A good virus program will scan the attachment before it gets deposited in your Inbox, and will also allow you to scan it manually before you open it if you want to be doubly sure.

AVG Free is a reliable antivirus program and is available for download here at no charge. Keep this regularly updated and you should be well protected. Thanks Hopester Doofus - still not convinced its the way to go using Outlook Contacts but I will heed your advice.Your trepidation is actually healthy, wombat. If you read through some of the other threads on this site, the first question we often ask the user is whether they've scanned for viruses and spyware. It's an all too common problem, and it HAPPENS mostly to those who don't know enough to protect themselves.

There are three things you must have on your system if you plan on being a member of the online community (and emails count in this regard).

1. Antivirus software. You have my recommendation on that.

2. A firewall. Sygate seems to be the popular choice for this. A firewall detects unauthorized ATTEMPTS by others to access your system.

3. An anti-spyware program. Microsoft AntiSpyware is what you want in this category, and will reduce the ability of spammers and online marketers to watch what you're doing while on-line, and target you for spam and unwanted advertisements.

With all of these programs, updates are made available on a regular basis, often weekly, which equip you to ward off the latest strains. Updating is easy even for inexperienced users, and can be performed manually or set to HAPPEN automatically at regular intervals.

Follow these rules and you should have little to fear.

AV.What about TAKING DIFFERENT approach? I created a simple data set for testing:

Dean 10:45:22
Dean 9:37:45
Dean Total 20:23:07
Grand Total 15:05:19

Thank you for the suggestion. I was trapped into keeping the setup I had due to the formulas already in place for other queries... but I was able to find the answer on MR. Excel's website... (a very good place to go for excel questions!)

the answer was: =SUM(SUMIF(Sheet1!D:F,"####",Sheet1!F:F),SUMIF(Sheet1!D:F,"####",Sheet1!F:F))

Thanks again. Thanks for the feedback. Glad you mentioned mrexcel.com. Looks like an excellent resource on Excel.

Solve : Outlook 2000 deletes message on Reply?

Answer»

I WOULD greatly appreciate if anyone might help me with this situation:
On a computer running XP and Microsoft Office 2000, Outlook has started deleting original emails when they are replied to.
Scenario: A new EMAIL is recieved. It's opened [or not, doesn't MATTER], "reply to" is clicked, response is written and sent. When going back to the Inbox, original message is gone. Not in Deleted folder either. The only thing left is the reply saved in Sent Mail, but no trace of the original email.
I can't find any option that controls this, and it never did this before a couple of days ago. It's my boss's computer, and the inbox is quite large. Is there a point where Outlook just starts deleting things? ::Scratching head::: Thanks in advance.1. Is Auto Archive turned on? (Tools--Options--Other) or
2. RULE created from Rules Wizard (Tools--Rules Wizard)?Hello Commando

Auto Archive is set to archive every 60 days, but it's flagged to prompt before doing so.
There are no rules made [ha, which doesn't make sense considering he has 30 or 40 folders... I guess he just manually moves things around.]

I've tested this out myself by SENDING an email to him and opeing it from his box. Poof! The original message just dissapears when you reply to it.

Thanks for your reply!!!Kara,

I have the EXACT same problem in Outlook 2000 and it also started doing this just a few days ago.

Any solutions yet to this problem?

I have autoarchiving every 14 days, but it also prompts me to archive and I have NO rules set up.Oh, BTW, I ran Microsoft Antispyware and Sypbot with no hits for any spyware.

I also tried a repair on Outlook 2000, that didn't fix it.

I uninstalled Outlook and then reinstalled, and that didn't fix it either.

I just thought I would let you know what steps I have taken so far.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Solve : Outlook new message will not display picture?

Answer»

I am running Windows XP PRO SP2 with Outlook 2003.

I want a PICTURE in my signatures. However, the only way it only allows me to do this is by setting my email OPTIONS to compose with MS Word. I don't want this. If I set it to not use Word, then I GET a message that Active X Controls do not allow me to show the content (the picture). I changed all my Internet Security settings to low to test, and the picture just comes up as a box with the RED x. It will not display.

Emails are composed using HTML.

Does anyone have a way to display the picture, because it is not sending with the emails, too?It looks like they want to sell you a copy of MS word for what - $200 ?

Well, thanks for your excellent advice! I looked around and found that DxDiag is the BEST way to go, so here's the file. Sorry it's so big, but you guys seem to be really knowledgeable and I figure you know what things to look for.bump- I have the dxdiag file now so you can see all of my system specs PRECISELY. please let me know anything you can find out by reading through it- it's all greek to me. My speakers are still stopping abruptly and I have no idea what the cause is
(note for new readers: I've TESTED the speakers, it's not a hardware problem)That's overkill on one hand but it's still not really enough info on the other hand.
When did this start?
Did you update the driver via the M$ Update site?
Visit the motherboard vendors support area for your board and download the driver directly from there. Uninstall the current driver and point the installer at your new driver.

Affraid of change? That's okay. I hope you like removing tracking cookies each day. Or having to buy software to filter them after the damage is done. ActiveX is a great solution as well. You no longer have to download an executeable to catch a virus, you can get one by simply browsing the Internet! Wonderful technology. Love it.

How about removing tons of spam from Outlook Express after the E-mail is downloaded?

Solve : Outlook 2000 tries to connect after boot?

Answer»

I have just purchased a new computer and moved all of my FILES, programs, etc. to it. I use the Outlook 2000 program for it's Calendar only. I have it at work and I have it at HOME. The .pst file is on my lan drive at work. I have no problem opening it when I'm logged on to my work VPN connection as I map to the shared drives first. With this new PC, it tries to retrieve my outlook .pst files - usually about 5 minutes after bootup - without my requesting it or even logging on to VPN. How do I get this to stop happening and only CONNECT when I start Outlook MANUALLY. I seem to remember this happening before and there was some type of setting to only use it off-line, but I can't find it.

Any help will be appreciated

Solve : Unknown program running causing minimizing?

Answer»

Ok, to start off, I have used many adware/spyware/antivirus programs, adaware, spybot, norton, free online scans etc etc.. I have no viruses or spyware to date.. the worst anything ever found was a small handfull of cookies which are beyond minor.

Whats been happening (been going on for quite some time.. honestly don't even remember if its been going on since i built the computer last summer) is that every so often.. which seems to be random, sometimes happens twice in 5 minutes.. sometimes not for an hour.. a program will run or seems to run cause a program bar comes up on the windows taskbar for just a second, but with no idenitifying text.. just a bar with an old school program/exe icon.. whenever I play games this instantly causes the game to minimize which is highly annoying. it also happens when i'm not playing games..

I started wondering if it was possible it was somehow related to not pressing a key on the KEYBOARD for a few minutes.. because every SINGLE time i play a game and i get up and leave it for 3minutes.. i come back to a minimized game.. however, i can be sitting here typing constantly as i am typing this at this very moment and it will happen.. so i'm really totally out of ideas.

I use Norton Internet Security but i have totally disabled all notifications because i thought that was the culprit at first.. not the case apparently, the only other programs running other than standard windows required processes are a temperature monitoring program and an overclocking program. all other programs and processes are disabled. I've even used a program to help me analyze all remaining processes to insure that they are all legit and not trojans or anything..

If anyone has any suggestions or thoughts or ever heard of anything like this before.. please let me know.

Oh.. I suppose I should mention.. this mystery program only minimizes anything that is being run in full screen.. if it's running when say i'm on IE or word.. it doesnt minimize them.. just my games (thats all i do in full screen).. but its terrible when i'm trying to relax after a day's work

Edit: Almost forgot, using Windows XP Pro (fully updated)So did you disable the temperature monitoring program and overclocking program?Quote

So did you disable the temperature monitoring program and overclocking program?

I'll try that now.

Use the Event Viewer to see what's been happening.

I opened it, the security audit is empty but system and app's are massive.. any hint as to what i should be looking for, it basically looks like a log of processes, all of which appear to be standard

edit: wierd quote system :/You know... I have the same issue myself... It never bothered me that much though... With me, it does the same with minimizing games, but it won't minimize Word... It shows on the taskbar for that 1 second though... No text... I never had time to look... I'll try to catch it in the event log, but it seems to be random, so it might be hard... I'll post my results as well...

FlameOk, it just happened, so I rushed over to the event viewer, and there's NO LOG of anything happening in ANY category for the PART 3 or so minutes... This little program that flashed on the taskbar came-up at 5:16 PM. I'll continue to refresh and see if it shows-up...

FlameThere is no such listing of any applications at that time in the Event log... None for that whole hour really... I wonder why it won't appear?

FlameI have NO idea what the program is... It must be software related, as I'm pretty sure that my other computer (just wiped clean and so far has only been used to install security software and run updates) has the program too... I'm not sure, but I think I noticed it once...

FlameWell, it has since showed-up a few times, but nothing is shown in the Event Log... What can this be?!

FlameCheck your incoming firewall logs for portscans at the same time.I have been suffering from this as well, no events in event viewer, no port attacks when it happened. Can anyone help as it ruins any games I am playing.Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

What do these programs promise to do? Missing .DLL files are not always related to a damaged registry.

What has caused the .DLL file to BECOME damaged?

Have you scanned for Viruses, Trojan Horses and Spyware?

Solve : Word form protection?

Answer»

I am new here and am looking for some help. I have a word document, which contains links to other PORTIONS of the document in the table of content, forms, and drop-downs. I would like to protect the forms on the document. However, whenever I select "protect...forms", the links in the table of content are deactiviated and become useless. Is there any way for me to have both items WORKING in the same document? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!Would you like to just PASSWORD protect the whole document itself you that you cannot open or modify the document without the password?

FlameThe form is to be used to send to groups in the company when they need to put in a service request, so the form can't be p/w protected for modification. I really need to keep the drop-downs, but my boss wants me to keep the links in the table of contents too - so I'm at a loss. Are you trying to do too much with one document? A protected form should really be used for collection of data, shouldn't it? What are the links for?

How good is your Visual Basic programming? You could certainly provide an alternative SOLUTION to this problem. You can use the Control Toolbox to insert buttons and whatnot on your form, that will still work when the form is protected. You could use these elements to assist in leaping about within the file, or doing anything else that is possible with Visual Basic. Thanks for the help everyone - FYI - I was able to do it USING the following:

1. protect forms via the padlock icon on the FORMS TOOLBAR rather than the TOOLS menu.
2. if 1 doesn't work, then try putting your document into sections (Insert \ Break \ Section Break) and from the menu TOOLS / PROTECT DOCUMENT click FORMS and then also click SECTIONS then untick the section that contains your TOC.
Well I didn't know that! Thanks for feeding back.

Solve : Outlook to webpage?

Answer»

IN outlook when trying to open website from email, get ERROR ( Operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer, contact system admin..) PLEASE help? thanks Bill Norman..Please please tell us what OS you are using and does "outlook" mean Outlook Express or Outlook (they are different)

ThanksUsing windows XP, and it is outlook not express.Google found this:

I am GETTING the following error in Outlook 2003 whenever I click on a Link in e-mail: This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator. How can I restore it to normal operation?

After some BACK and forth on this one, we figured out that this happened because you installed a new Web browser, Firefox, then uninstalled it, leaving Outlook with no default browser to use for links.
The new way to fix this is to open Internet Explorer, the Web you now use, and go to Tools Internet Options Programs and use the Reset Web Settings option (while unchecking the box for “Also reset my home PAGE”).
***

Several sites mentioned the same fix while others insisted that Outlook requires O.E. as the browser (Bill Gates team keeping it in-house). However the concensus opinion is that you get the error message because Outlook cannot find a default browser.

Good luck

Solve : Outlook 2002 and HP iPAQ 2215?

Answer»

I have used my HP iPAQ 2215 quite successfully with Outlook 2002 and ActiveSync quite successfully for two years. This spring I installed Office 2003 and all *censored* broke loose. I LEARNED that I can only use Outlook 2002. My question is how to transfer all of the data into 2002? when I uninstall Outlook 2003 and install Outlook 2002, the software cannot find my data. Any help would be appreciated.

Jim

Outlook folders and data are transferred through the use of a PST file. When you create a new PST in Outlook 2003, it asks you if you want to create a Microsoft Office Outlook Personal Folders file, or an Outlook 97-2002 Compatible Personal Folders file. You want to create the LATTER.

See here.

Hopester,

Thanks for your quick reply. I think I need a "step by step" through the process. At the moment, I am running only Outlook 2003. Whenever I remove 2003 and load 2002, I cannot access my folders. when I removed 2002 and reload 2003, my folders are back. Of course, all this hinges on whether the HP iPAQ 2215 can synchronize with Outlook 2003.

I suspect this is much SIMPLER than I think.

Jimchoo Jim, the link I provided details how to create a PST (backup) copy of all your Outlook folders. Did you do that?Hopester, I am just learning to use this SITE and missed the "see here" link. I think this is what I am looking for. I am headed out the door right now, but will let you know later today or tomorrow or how it goes. MANY thanks. Jim

Solve : OE not playing nice with Norton?

Answer»

Hey - I have two laptops that are theoretically configured the same, both running XP SP2, through the same router, etc. etc.

On one, Outlook Express hangs trying to hit a POP3. It GETS through IMAP servers OK, but times out on the POP3 only.

The error message (0x800CCC19, I think) indicated that it might be an AntiViral problem... But that didn't help.

So I disable NORTON FIREWALL, and the POP3 was OK.

I have two mailboxes on OE, and the IMAP sails through; then it hangs on the POP3. But with Firewall OFF, it's OK.

Do I need to get into the Firewall and figure out what ports are what, blah blah blah? The other laptop is fine, and it has an IMAP and a POP3 on OE, as well.have you checked the firewall settings on the laptop without the trouble against the laptop with the problems firewall setting.

Cheers fayward67Norton Anti Spam OFTEN interferes with POP3 accounts. Older versions of NAV used to cause timeouts.Quote

have you checked the firewall settings on the laptop without the trouble against the laptop with the problems firewall setting.

Cheers fayward67
Well, I let them both auto-setup originally, and both accounts were already there... Also, I have looked and they appear the same.Never allow a firewall or any other program for that matter to "set itself up" as it were.

Having said that, there is a known problem in OE6 with MIME types and NAV. It causes a mailserver timeout which will GENERATE the error that you describe.
Is IE6 SP1 installed on the machine that fails?

Solve : Outlook 2003 with series of odd errors?

Answer»

I have Outlook 2003 (11.8010.658) SP2. It has worked absolutely fine and then all of a SUDDEN it has begun to work very oddly. For instance if I open up a contact, the cut and paste (Ctrl V & Ctrl X, etc) don't work. The drop down menus drop down but nothing registers when you click on a command. If I highlight a command and then do a Return, then it WORKS. Otherwise the only way to come out and save the changes is to click on the white cross on the red background in the top RIGHT hand corner when it asks whether you want to save the changes - that part works. The same applies to e-mails (for instance if I open up a message and then click on Resend Message, nothing happens (and to my knowledge there is no other way of doing this).

The first sign of a problem occurred when I opened up Outlook and a sort of 'ghost' page of Word opened at the same time. I have run 'Detect and Repair'; no improvement.

I have uninstalled Office completely and reinstalled it; no change. I have set up a new Profile; no change.

I have also run Scanpst.exe which repaired an unspecified number of ERRORS but which has not solved the problem, and the 'ghost' remains.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Solve : SPAM blocking?

Does anyone know of any good, free, and TRUSTED (as in they have used it) SPAM blocking programs that look through Outlook Express emails to check for SPAM?My wife uses GLock Spam-Combat, she gets about 40-50 spam emails a day & swears by it.What about your ISP? Can you access your email via a web BROWSER? Does your ISP offer any spam blocking FEATURE you COULD be using. Check it out. I use EARTHLINK. I used them for months before I realized I could use their WebMail feature to view my email from any computer, but also to set preferences for their spamBlocker. By setting spamBlocker to the highest level, nearly all spam is blocked before it gets to my computer and into my OE Inbox or other folders. I use Mailwasher but there are free alternatives. Solve : Mini CDs?

Answer»

I have a homework questions regarding mini CDs and am looking for a site that discusses them, not just trying to sell them. I have already tried searching with not much luck. Does anyone have a suggestion or can tell me a little about them? They are small and only hold 50-60 megs. of data. They are very shiny!

What would I do without the kindness of GX1_Man? Not a lot of discussion goes on about these things specifically. What is your question? You never did state it.

What would you like to discuss besides the size, capacity and COLOR? We covered that already.

Solve : Help needed to disable my integrated grahics?

Answer»

I have an old IBM ( model 2171 Aptiva)w/ win-98 I am trying to install a new graphics card onto. The new card (Prowler Radeon 7000-AGP) instructions say to disable the integrated graphics. I have been into the Bio's but don't see anything regarding disabling or enabling the graphics card. I tried contacing IBM but they were no HELP because the computer is out of warrnty.

Very much appreciate any help. When you first turn it on (cold boot) press the F1 key occasionally when you see the logo screen. That should get you to the setup. There is a section called onboard devices and you should be able to disable the onboard video there and set it for PCI.

I think you need a PCI card, because I don't recall an AGP slot in there. Is the slot you intend to use white or dark?

You should be good to go. Thanks for your reply GX1_Man,

Indeed the slot I am installing the new card into is dark brown. It is the same slot I pulled the old card from. I had a PCI card at first and I returned it for the AGP.

The only thing I saw in the MAIN Menu of the BIOS was something under the heading of: Advanced Options called the VGA Palette Snoop ( that was enabled). Is this what I am looking for to disable. The other listing in the Main menu was Video information which listed the Video Controller as ATI Radeon III. There was no option to disable anything in there though.

Solve : MS Outlook - Functions not implemented?

I am using Outlook 2002 and I am having trouble with sending/replying email this morning.

When I press "New", a msg box comes up and say "Not Implemented". When I GO to "File"->"New", I can't find "New MESSAGE". Ctrl-Shift-M will also give me "Not Implemented".

Reply, Forward and Forward to all doesn't work. I can't even export my pst file...

Say if i have to re-install Outlook, does it mean all my emails are GONE?

O yes, one thing I did last night was to download some Windows update from the Microsoft site...would it have something to do with this?

Thanks...Is your windows fully up to date?
Was your download a hotfix that you can uninstall to try it.I downloaded the updates yesterday...but how do i find out if it is updated? Is there anywhere I can check - like CONTROL Panel?Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs.
You could also try going back to Microsoft & checking your update history.I think Belarc Advisor tells you the installed updates too.
Google for it.Thanks...

I checked from Control Panel, and it didn't show the update that I downloaded...

In any event, I want to re-install outlook...do you think i will lose my 2000+ emails?

Solve : Synchronizing Outlook?

Answer»

:-/

How can I synchronize outlook 2003 so that my users can see their files when not on our network; while still maintaining a copy on our server?

Thank You :-)Are you using an Exchange server? Or an external ISP? In the latter case, invesitgate IMAP access.Thank you for your response..

I am using an external ISP. Could you shed light on the steps I NEED to FOLLOW?IMAP is exactly what you need then, if your ISP offers it. Many do, but you may have to ask them to switch it on at their end. >Here< is the Wikipedia article on IMAP, for starters. The MAIN thing you need to know however is that IMAP differs from POP3 in that the messages are left on the server at all times until they are deleted. The idea is that you can log in from anywhere and see exactly the same mail folders. Support for multiple or nested folders is much BETTER than with POP3.

You'll have to set up the mail ACCOUNTS again on each email client, choosing IMAP rather than POP3 when the choice arises. Use the details provided by your ISP - they may have a different server for IMAP, for example. They should be ABLE to talk you through all your connection issues.

Unfortunately you cannot convert existing POP3 accounts to IMAP accounts, but once the IMAP accounts are set up, you can copy across any email from your Inbox, no trouble.

If you run into problems, post again.
